42mpg with style and a big backseat

After 50,000 miles I still love mine. I got an S Plus with all options except heated seats. For the price paid (21.5k) it's hard to fault this car. Cruising at 70mph will return 42mpg in a car with a huge backseat and a very comfortable and well-designed cockpit. The front seats are very comfortable and we've taken two 3,000+ mile road trips without complaint. The gauges, steering wheel and control set are tasteful and have a quality feel. I love downshifting with the flappy panels and overall really like the CVT transmission. What's not to like? The doors have kind of a cheap feel, both in hard plastic trim and a cheap tin sound when you close the door. Also, immediate pull out power is a bit lacking with the 1.8 motor/CVT combo. Under hard acceleration, the car will often lag for a moment, and you in time get used to what it can do reliably and will change your driving style to suit. That's it, but I accept both given the price and economy of the car. We've had no unscheduled maintenance, other than a failed fog lamp that was quickly replaced on warranty by our excellent Toyota dealer. After 2 years I still love the style. No regrets. Recommended without hesitation.

Got an incredible deal. Absent the deal, I'd have gone with the civic. Got the S PLUS for about 3000$ less than the civic lx. The corolla is exactly what is expected. Nothing more, nothing less. Acceleration is horrible. Noticeable difference from my old 14' civic. Night and day from the new civic. Handling is actually very tight and smooth. The cabin is quiet. Having that extra gear (6) is nice. Makes highway travel less noisy, and obviously more efficient. Will not get up many hills in 6th, but then again neither does my automatic v6 van without downshifting. First few days of driving yielded about 35-36 mpg in mixed Hwy/city. (35lbs in tires) Definitely not pushing it yet. I find the seats comfortable, unlike some of the other reviews. I am 6'5". ???? I've always driven the base model civic, so all the bells and whistles are fun to have... I guess. I'm sure I'll learn to appreciate them. Only problem I have with the car is the lack of power. It is slow! Pretty sure I can beat the car on foot the first 10-20 feet!

For my age, in the lower 60s, this is a nice conservative looking car. I'm new to the Corolla line and for years I've admired the new look. I bought one. I like everything about this car except for the stock tires. TireRack rated these low rolling resistance stock tires as one of the lowest in ride quality and it feels like it, i.e. some road noise. However when these tires wear out, I'm looking to buy some premium low rolling resistance tires that will make everything about this car top notch. As a scientist, I'm just looking to go from point A to point B with affordability, reliability and best fuel economy in mind.

I have owned the S Special Edition for about a month now and have put just over 5000 miles on it. My only complaint so far is that it is a bit under powered, especially going up the hills in Pittsburgh, but I'll sacrifice that everyday of the week for the gas mileage. No complaints other than that so far. I think next time I'll go for the Avalon Hybrid to get my power and great gas milage. My car is the S Special Edition with Absolute Red paint, red stitched interior trim and mats, the Smart Key System, Entune™ Audio Plus, moonroof, pure black chrome 17 inch rims with low profile tires.

Owned a 2003 Corolla S for 12 yrs. Had great back/lumbar support, handled well-one with the car) The 2016 has no back support = back stress! Need a rolled towel or pillow to support. NOT safe-after/during rain-the front windshield FOGS up continuous! Have to use wipers all the time...to clear the fog since defroster or change temperature does not clear it. (2003 Corolla never fogged after rain - had 12 yrs..) Car feels more bulky (not tight with road). Bad view/feel of outer car for turning/parking..so got to check how far pulled up, to park. Never had to issue with any other car! Interior looks cheaper than past models. Front outer grill a bit too much. Speakers not as good as my 2003. ECO mode light comes on = good.

Love that Corolla S

I enjoy my 2016 Corolla very much. It is a cute car and Corollas have been around for decades. My first car as a teen was my mom's old Corolla so this is sentimental. They keep their value and do well. My dog Spike likes the car, too. I saved money by not getting back up camera and cruise control so that is good. I don’t really need those. The car is great.

First, I am a car enthusiast, and when I purchased my second Corolla, I knew I wasn't buying a sport sedan. My first Corolla was a 2012 S, and was last on my list for what I wanted to buy. It did everything well enough and had the rear space I was looking for in a compact. Power was good, it could have used another 20 or so horsepower, but I wasn't looking for a drag racer. The 2016 Corolla S Plus is a big step forward for the model. Overall, there is more usable room in this generation Corolla than the previous, not counting the substantial improvement in rear legroom, which was one of the qualities that drew me to my first Corolla. Interior materials and overall look, feel and finish are very good. The manual "sport" seats are very comfortable, and have good support. As far as the CVT transmission goes, it is better than most (in the S Plus trim) out there, equal to the Honda. In lower trims, feels very different and tends to keep a steady RPM for acceleration. In the S trim, the CVT has a Sport mode which simulates gear changes which works very well, giving a crisp response for each "shift". When not in Sport mode, and if one keeps a light foot on the throttle, it will go into Eco mode. Eco tends to hold RPMs, although not as bad as lower trims, and "feels" like a slipping clutch in a manual transmission when the CVT "shifts gears". Initial acceleration is soft, but once under way, acceleration is more than adequate for passing and getting up to highway speeds. One of the biggest improvements to the Corolla, mechanically, are the rear disc brakes. These are only available on S Plus and S Premium trims, and well worth any extra expense. The lower trims (L, LE and LE Eco) tend to drive and handle with a bland feel, but the S trims are more sporty and feel different, not any roll or wallow. There are other good cars out there, try them all before you make a decision, but the Corolla is not as bad as some try to make it.

This is a wonderful, beautiful car (once you get past the steer wheel being so 'busy') except for 2 things. 1st thing is the bluetooth for your phone. The air conditioner vent must be pointed downward and the AC fan turned down to one or 2 notches or whoever you are talking to cannot hear anything but wind as if your window is open. But by far the BIGGEST problem is an engineering defect on the glass covering the odometer and speedometer. Unlike my husbands Camry, there is no 'hooding' on the dashboard that overshadows the glass over the odometer or speedometer, and in certain conditions, even though the window tinting is wonderful. the sun glares on the odometer and speedometer, making them unreadable and there is no digital odometer, so you have no idea what speed you are going & leaning over and trying to see takes your eyes off of the road where you can easily swerve into incoming traffic, etc.

I'm very impressed with the latest generation of Toyota Corollas. The interior styling and quality has vastly improved over previous generations. The handling is very good for an economy 4Dr Sedan and the back seat legroom is fantastic. I'm 6'1" tall and I can sit comfortably in the back seats without my knees hitting the front seats. Head room is not an issue. Visibility is great, the blind spots are very minor in this car. The S Plus package I purchased comes standard with Bluetooth, voice controls, USB, Back Up camera, paddle shifters, stiffer struts, allow wheels, front fog lights, electronic mirrors + defrost, and a 50/50 cloth/vinyl interior. For the price I think you get an excellent vehicle. This Corolla is about the same size as the Camry, it's not even close to the traditional Corollas of the past. Ride comfort is superb, the seats are very comfortable for long trips. Road noise is fairly low and acceptable, but it's not of course as good as a Lexus or Cadillac. The touch screen radio is intuitive and easy to use/navigate. The climate controls are also basic and easy to use, this is a plus in my opinion. Sure you don't get lots of the latest bells and whistles with this car, such as active parking assist or lane change notifications, but that's not something I care about or want. For the price of this vehicle I'm very impressed, it's a great value. What you get with this car, in my opinion, are the essentials. You get your hands free, you get your keyless entry, you get your HD radio, you get excellent headlights (night visibility), fuel economy, safety, handling, cargo space (big trunk for a small car), and passenger space. On top of it all, you get Toyota Reliability. Parts/maintenance are very low/affordable. Choosing this vehicle was a simple choice for me. The only other vehicle I would consider at this price point is the Mazda 3. They are very close to each other in terms of price and options. But I felt that overall the Toyota offered a better value both in the short and long term.

I have been driving this for 2 weeks while my Acura is in the collision shop. Great first car for a teen or a great commuter car. For a non-leather interior, the cloth seats are nice. Power windows and mirrors but not power seats. I am 5'4" and have the seat pulled all the way up. Not sure how shorter drivers would do. It has that CVT transmission that you will either love or hate. It's a little hard to get used to. Prefer more acceleration. Great on gas. AWFUL stereo.

First off this is a Corolla, not a luxury car. For the segment this car was meant for, its a great car. As a daily driver, 28mpg in the city is really nice compared to 10mpg from my previous suv. The entertainment system is great, especially when paired to your mobile phone. Seat comfort is actually very nice, even the back seats. The only really complaint i have is engine\transmission noise, it might be because its a 1.8L and its trying but its a little noise and you can tell its a 4 cyl. Maybe a little more sound dampening material may help, not sure. There is some road noise on rough roads, could be the tires that come on the car but on the smooth roads its quiet. Dealer support for this vehicle is excellent.

Good fuel economy on highway. Round trip from San Jose to San Diego at ~70 mph, gets ~37 mpg. At ~60 mph, mpg gets even better. Just average fuel economy in city. ~23.5 mpg. Much reduced body roll than previous model, now takes corners confidently. Doesn't float on highway, as previous model did. Acceleration from stop is not fast but acceptable. Adequate acceleration on highway. Con: First thing I noticed was distorted reflection in rear mirror. Made me dizzy. Luckily dealer could replace a rear mirror, its reflection was still distorted but less noticeable. Where is Toyota Quality Control? I have driven Camry, Altima, Mazda 3, Forte, Fusion, Focus, Sonata, Sentra, Elantra, & Accent. The 2016 Corolla LE has the worst front seat, virtually no lower back support. Third day into driving this car gave me back ache. I had to stuff a small pillow behind my back. Previous model does not have this problem. Cost cutting, thinner seat? The steering wheel is off-center, more towards the right. My left hand needs to reach further. After long hour of driving, your body posture becomes asymmetric. Just plain poor ergonomics. The steering wheel's hard plastic cuts into the joints of my fingers. The center console's hard plastic cut into the side of my right knee. I have since taped a soft pad there as cushion. After the San Jose - San Diego round trip, its roof started rattling. It was just one month of driving. Where is Toyota's reliability?

I bought a 2016 Correll 5 months ago and have had nothing but issues with the a/c system. There is a mold smell coming out of the vents. I have taken it to my local dealer 3 times in less rhan a month and they are trying to tell me to just deal with it and they cant get the smell out. This is a known issue with the Corolla's per the shop manager at toyota. Just another note. There a certain instructions on how to shut the a/c systems off (make sure you follow it). Even though i have and it did not resolve my issue. I cant wait for the summer for it to get worse. I doubt i will ever buta toyota again. Expecially a corrola.

After watching and reading many reviews I purchased a 2016 Corolla LE Plus.Corollas reliability is why.Exterior color is black pearl. It's amazing in the sun seeing all the vivid pearl colors.Toyotas LED projector headlights are the best headlights for visibility at night. The dash controls are well thought out and easy to use(love the back button on the steering wheel).Stereo sounds good and is plenty loud.Car horn sounds like a duck sliding down hill on his butt.Drivers seat is comfortable for the one hour commute to work. You have to adjust the seat and the steering wheel a while to get dialed in,but once you do it's all good.Acceleration is adequate, actually peppy when in sport mode.CVT transmission is very smooth and seamless, love it.One professional reviewer said "the car wanders on the highway and the steering wheel needs constant correction" I disagree.I would agree with another reviewer saying the car "floats",which is not a bad thing in the Toyota world. So far I am getting a combined MPG of 38 plus.Happy with the purchase.

I have the car less than a month. So far, my only complaints are that the storage compartment in the center console is too small, although its deep...and it's positioned slightly too far back. Bluetooth works great, but although, i can have incoming text read to me (hands-free), the system does not provide an iption for me to reply via voice activation. I cannot comment in fuel economy yet because I have only driven about 200 miles so far. Started with an almost full tank. I was down to 1/2 tank at 179 miles, so I think its pretty good.

This was just given to me as a company car. I drive about 85k miles a year. So when I first got in it looked really nice lots of cool new option nice layout. until I noticed only one power outlet I have search the whole car very weird in this day and age but not a deal breaker so far. After I started driving home from the office which is two hour drive i made it about an hour down the interstate and had to get out the seat was killing lower back my arms were also tired because the steering is not telescopic and you have to reach for it so the arm rest are only there for decoration. I am only 5'10" but I do believe this car is design for shorter people. Just to make it clear I am not here to beat on Toyota I travel allot and I drive all types of rental cars and this is by far the worst car I have ever driven Hopefully they can return this monday...

Does not deliver on the looks it promises

I thought long and hard so far of my month+ of driving the 2016 Corolla S. Am I really driving a Toyota? What willed me into the vehicle was its overall design- very well done on the exterior and interior. Reminds me of several higher-end vehicles of the last decade. I do enjoy the HID lights and nice wheels; the vehicle has a nice presence. However, this vehicle overall has been a major letdown. I expected buying a brand new Toyota not to have to worry about petty little issues like squeaks and rattles. I did not look over the car in that regard; I expected, "it's a Toyota"... & that is where it has let me down. I have NEVER owned a vehicle (coming from years of driving old Honda's) that RATTLES so much. This vehicle has a rattle in the drivers door, one by the a/c vent by the drivers window, the steering column itself, one in the passenger seat, one in the plastic trim over the passenger-side airbag, and last but not least, the light/Bluetooth microphone fixture on the roof rattles as well. I would imagine it is not unreasonable that this drives me crazy- it has 1200 miles on it!! This vehicle is also somewhat noisier then anticipated. Blame this on the short test-drive, I suppose. The LE did not seem as noisy. Additionally, the MPG's are marginal at best. In identical conditions, my old Honda got 33 MPG... it was a class-size above... The Corolla is getting about the same. However, the EPA is 25~30% better on the Corolla, go figure. Again, something that this car has not been able to deliver. The steering on this vehicle is light. I realize during a highway maneuver how lacking in feel and control this car is. Lane changes are an ordeal- the car just floats around and one cannot control its direction due to lack of feedback. Imagine using a computer tiller, but attached to an actual car. The one last pet-peeve I have of this vehicle is how uncomfortable it is. It did not seem so during the test drive- it didn't raise an objection. However, the telescopic steering wheel does not come out far enough, causing me to sit closer to the wheel, which in turn bends my knees so that it is not resting against the cushion. The left footrest is too close to the brake pedal- I can't rest my foot on this footrest without contorting my legs, and thus they look to stretch beside it. However, the proximity of the protruding footrest and brake pedal is so close that if I were to move my foot, it also touches the brake pedal- not great when actually depressing the brake pedal. Again, my responsibility for not scrutinizing this during the test drive, but an ergonomic downfall galore nonetheless. I suppose the consumer in this situation is the one that needs to take responsibility- or the salesman hustled me too good. However, the Corolla is the worst car I've ever had- and I've had old cars stranding me every now and then. This was the whole point- I wanted to avoid this headache in that regard. What I got was a warrantied car, but an absolute irritant to drive. This vehicle was bought on past reputation- parents, company cars, etc. It even looks great. After a month of driving it, it has disappointingly not delivered. I urge others to scrutinize their Toyota purchase; my experience says the current Toyota product is a hollowed out facade built upon past glory.

love my car!

Very easy to drive. Brakes are decent, acceleration is adequate although the engine does buzz to get there. Not a huge fan of the CVT but seems like it needs that to get the most out of the engine. visibility is very good. It was the low end model but the stereo was fine. Biggest gripes: At highway speed the engine could use another gear. Turning around 3K @ 70mph => 34-35 mpg. Car would be much improved w/ small engine + turbo. Very little steering feedback and car tends to drift a bit on the hwy. Cruise control is typical Toyota in that it surged a few too many miles above the set speed as you hit rollers. LED headlights are way too hot which is a shame. I like the beam pattern of the LEDs but the temp does not create enough contrast and its compounded by not being strong enough. Drove this as well as the Ford Focus and VW Jetta 1.4 all in the same month. Each for almost a week. Granted I'm not focused on long term ownership costs but the Jetta was hands down my favorite.

Corolla S cute and efficient!

Just bought my new Corolla. I went from a filull size sedan to this and I am impressed. Its cute sporty looking but comfortable to drive and gets great gas mileage. I am very happy with my purchase which, by the way, was smooth and quick considering buying a car is usually a pain. Thanks to Cox toyota in Burlington, NC.

happy corolla buyer

Bought this car for Ubering. Lots of rear seat leg room and comfy attractive interior is popular with passengers. Ride quality is good. Acceleration is adequate to the task. Not quick, but doesn't feel dangerously slow. Will get out of its own way so to speak. A little thrashy accelerating from a stop, but smooths out and nicely quiet once cruising speed is achieved, though rough road surface noise is transmitted to the cabin. The radio is great. The touch screen is easy to use and the sound quality is quite good for a car in this price range. It can deal with all 7500 songs on my iPod easily and allows intuitive control from the touch screen. (My Ford Sync radio in my F150 runs out of memory limiting features). Back up camera is nice to have. USB port is nice, allows my iPod to be controlled from the touch screen, but charge rate could not keep up with my Android LG V10 phone running Uber Partner, Sherpa Share and Google Maps. Luckily the 12v socket with a 2.0 charger can, but there is only one. I like the LED headlights, but the high beams are halogen. Fuel economy is as good as advertised, maybe better. Easy to drive, tight turning radius. Being in it for a full day is comfortable too. Overall a great inexpensive competent commuter car with values and features above its pay grade. I am happy with my purchase.

Rented this car for 10 days. I drove it across the country. The power mirror adjustment is on the dash behind the steering wheel. You can not see it while in the seat, so it is difficult to adjust while driving. There was plenty of room on the door to put it in the correct place. Gas mileage could be improved with a higher overdrive gear. The engine was running around 3,000 RPM on the highway. Ideally should be around 2,200 RPM. Car was noisy, but at that level I would expect. Very low tech in the instrumentation/radio. The cigarette lighter does not stay powered to charge your phone while the car is off. The hood release should probably not be paired with the gas opening lever on the floor. I see potential safety issue if you do not realize you pop the hood. Car gets the job done.

Awesome car

Excellent spacing. For a 6" driver this is awesome, I had tried Corolla 10 years back and it was small. Very spacious and has excellent capabilities. Moonroof. Gps etc and all for $19300 invoice in Jan 2016 for a 2016 Model.

Great car! Great value!

First I want to say thank you to everyone who writes reviews. As a person who doesn't know too much about cars I really relied on the honesty of the consumers to help to choose my new vehicle and here we are :) So I wanted to make sure that I pay it forward and write a review in hopes of helping someone in their car buying decision. Pros: Trusted name, cost/value, mpg, tech features, safety and handling Cons: Shape of the headlights, on low beams it does limit how far they illuminate ahead especially on hills (but I have gotten used to it after a month) high beams are fine And the middle console is a little smaller than I'm used too (which is really no big deal I just need to stop storing so much junk in my car lol) Overall love this car feels great knowing I didn't have to compromise quality for value and this is an upgrad from my 2002 honda accord.
