I am still in the market for a SUV 5 seater and based on the reviews was ready to give a try to Mazda. Her is my laundry list of why I did not go further than the test drive. 1. No auto rear open hatch, not even as an option. 2. Interior was sparse and not as well appointed as some of the competition out there. There is a plasticy feeling in the car and no real feature comforts. 3. No rear back up sensors available. The positive is the price and it does have some punch to it. Also you cannot beat the gas mileage. We were blown away however at the Santa Fe by Hyundai. Never even thought about owning one, but I am super excited about possibly getting one. The options are many, including turbo 2.0 engine. All of the gadgets a guy/gal could ever want including, Apple Car integration, rear sensors, all around camera view, cruise control with auto distancing, reclining rear seats, heated seats available on both up front and rear seats, cooling feature on the seats upfront, an amazing full car sun roof and one of the best bumper to bumper warranty out there 5 years/60k miles. All at a price is in line or lower than anything out there.

Terrific SUV. My husband bought one last year and our other car, a VW Tiguan, quickly became the less desired car to drive. When we turned in the leased Tiguan and were looking for a new compact SUV, I looked at everything in the class from a new Tiguan to the Toyota RAV4, Honda CRV, Hyundai SantaFe, etc all the way up to a Mercedes GRA and a BMW X3 and the combination of features, handling, design and price made a second CX5 the clear choice for our family once again. Easy to get our toddler in and out of, comfortable front and back, excellent cargo capacity, and a great drive somewhere between the heavy stiffness of a German car and the zippy maneuvering of a Japanese one. Styling beats anything within $15k of the price. Nav system is excellent and stereo system is good. Really happy with my choice.

Touring model was purchased for safety- added side mirror alert, AWD. Didn't need the sunroof but it's a nice feature. Biggest complaints are sluggish acceleration, horrible navigation system. Soooo outdated!, Wish the trunk door was automatic! Instrument panels seem pretty cheap. Cute car, runs well but should have shopped around more before making the final decision.

Love the exterior appearance. Roomy inside for compact SUV. Instrumentation is well laid out. Seats are comfortable. Road handling is very good. Braking is excellent. Engine is peppy. Rides heavy for a small SUV giving a firm yet comfortable ride. Very good value for the money.

After owning large full size trucks for years for business and family use we were really worried about getting a small suv. We have always felt in order to feel safe when driving you have to drive something large and heavy. The down side was always really poor fuel eco. and handling. I have to say after only having my new cx 5 for 2 weeks the smaller size suv feels fine. My family of 4 feels comfortable and safe with all the safety features the cx 5 offers. I find myself grabbing the cx 5 keys instead of my truck keys every time I go out. It's also a blast to drive , its handling is precise and its quick. I was sure you would have to sacrifice fun and performance for fuel economy. Not the case with the cx 5 you get both with the great fuel eco.. I'm getting 25 mpg in the city which is twice the mpg's of my truck. inside the cx 5 the leather seats are a little firm but comfortable. Everything inside is laid out nice and is easy to use. i bought the vehicle in July of 2015. It now has 21,000+ miles on it and currently in for service to replace the Transmission. Until this happened, I was very pleased with the vehicle, especially when taking a long trip. It is a very good road car and I do not feel 'beat' to death after riding for several hours. I drove from Mississippi to Atlanta, GA all the way and when I arrived at my destination, I did not feel tired or stiff from the trip. I stopped in Mississippi on the way back and was heading home the next day. That is when the trouble started. I tried to resume my trip back home and the transmission 'went south'. When I finally got the vehicle back to my dealer for service, the service department tried to drive it into the service bay and had great difficulty driving just a short distance.

2016 CX-5 GT - One Year Later

After exhaustive research, I narrowed the field of small SUVs down to the Forrester, CX-5 & the CRV. My key criteria (and this may vary from yours) was gas mileage, comfort, cargo capacity & price. Performance came in 4th. The Forrester was my leading candidate going into the test drives. Being 6'3", I couldn't sit in the passenger seat of the Subaru without hitting the headliner. The Honda had an annoying vibration through the steering wheel when stopped. After a year driving the CX-5, I'm extremely pleased with my decision. A recent 500+ mile trip over a 4,000 ft mountain pass, we got 32 MPG. The "tech" works well. I'm especially pleased with the adaptive LED headlights, Bluetooth/pandora, lane warning system & the cross-traffic sensing backup system. Then there's the Zoom-Zoom factor. The bodylean for a vehicle of this class/size is fantastic. I have to look very hard to find any Cons and the following is really nit-picking. The supportive seats the make cornering fun become hard and uncomfortable on long road trips creating the "tired butt" condition. The great MPG is partially achieved by the transmission getting to the higher gear as soon as possible. This can put you in a weak part of the power curve for the 2.5 engine. Yes, you can put the car in sport mode and manually shift but that will carry a MPG penalty. The visibility is poor with large blind spots. The lane warning system is a must and if it fails, good luck. The speedometer goes up to 160. This puts 80 at the midpoint (12:00). I rarely drive over 140 (kidding). The 5 MPH increments are very small. If the midpoint was 60, the 5 MPH increments would be easier to read. Once in cruise control, a digital readout appears in the instrument cluster. Overall, great car.

There are many small SUV options. I debated about paying more for a Lexus or Acura, even certified pre-owned, but just believe this is the best overall value. It is a Lexus or Acura? No it's not, but it also much less expensive even compared to pre-owned with 40-60K miles.

Come from a Toyota family - the one's who do not care much about driving and a car is an appliance to them. Test drove the CX-5 / Rogue and Tucson for 2016 models. Wife did the same. We felt the CX-5 was head and shoulders above the other two. Here are some important summary points: 1. Sport mode is very responsive, for a slight pedal pressure it will go, good for merging on highways and good for passing at higher speeds. 2. The suspension is stiff - a toyota mutes even the smallest bumps in road - not this one. And the suspension being stiff is great for handling / cornering. You get more confidence riding this. 3. Skyactive engine suffers mpg hit at higher speeds - This is true for many cars, check what speeds the EPA uses to estimate - if you always go 75mph category you may not get the rated EPA. But still this beats Rav4 / CRV on mpg. Only the Rogue is close but it has a CVT and handles like a Frankenstein. 4. Value for money is great - Mazda is no Toyota, for them to get customers they have to give more features. BSM / RCTA / Power seats at a sub 26,000 MSRP is much better value than Toyota for example. 5. Crash / Safety : Frequent member on CX-5 forums, some of the ones who have been in a car crash had rollovers and were able to get out of the car safely. They are all re-buying CX-5. Solidly built vehicle. We frequently get posts about 2015 users buying 2016 with their insurance money. 6. This has all the cargo you need, you may have that one occasion a year when you will miss the extra 5 cu.ft. of space in Rav4 or CRV but the daily driving experience will make up for it. 7. Real value is driving this on scenic highways through mountains and curvy roads - Scenic Hgwy 88 in Arkansas or something similar, it will put a smile on your face. This is a good gift for a dad / car driving enthusiast who wants a car - not an appliance which can also carry out the mundane tasks of commuting / kids to school etc.

Have the dealership let you test drive one for an extended time. Front seats caused back pains after short time. Never had this problem in any other car, including recent a recent rental of a RAV4 which would have been comparable. Otherwise good value, and like the handling, but pointless if you cannot sit in it comfortably for an extended period.

Coming down from both a large SUV and a LEXUS I find the CX-5 compatible. it's not fancy but has all the bells and whistles exactly where you need them. Instrumentation has everything layed out in a very simple format. The handling is exceptional and it's nice to have a car with real brakes again. The get up and go really is "zoom zoom". I find the seats and ride very comfortable though I would like more adjustments available on the drivers seat.

I love just about everything besides 2 things. The button that u push to start the car is located behind the windshield wipers, to me that's badly thought out. The only other thing I don't like is that it's loud when u start it and while its running. So if that is a problem, I would recommend not getting the sport model. If those aren't too bothersome to you then I would highly recommend it.

I found the best price by using edmunds website. I obtained written prices by email for the exact model and options I wanted, and I got a real good deal. The Mazda CX-5 is the best overall deal in the small SUV segment: best acceleration in the 4 cylinder engine group, excellent storage, good comfort, ride and noise and good feeling of the road and a lot of technology? The interior gives a feeling of quality, at least in the grand touring trim. The only minor complaint is that the brakes are a little weak as compared to the excellent acceleration.

I researched ten small crossovers and drove four of them. Hyundai had a much better warranty, Ford had more features for the price, and Subaru had that "go anywhere" reputation, but the CX-5 was substantially more fun to drive - for me, an important consideration. Plus, I already own a 2016 Miata, so I was familiar with the Mazda way of doing things. The Grand Touring comes with leather seating and 18" wheels, two features that I find uncomfortable, so I asked my dealership to find me a Soul Red Touring (17" wheels, cloth upholstery) with the Moonroof/Bose package. They did, the price was very reasonable, and they went to great lengths to make sure I was happy with my purchase. Which I mostly am. The red is just beautiful, the car is attractive in a chunky station wagon kind of way, it has some athletic moves - no Miata - but it accelerates and turns better than anything this side of a BMW, and gas mileage is phenomenal - mid 20s around town, low 30s on the interstate. Read on for the things I was less-than-thrilled with. Here's a warning for Serious Sirius listeners: I found out too late that the Sirius/XM receiver is included on the Touring ONLY with the Touring Technology Package, which I didn't ask for, and so didn't get. I got GPS Navigation, a backup camera, and blind-spot alert, but no satellite radio. NOTE: The Sirius receiver CANNOT be installed afterwards by the dealership. (Up through 2015 it could, but not so for the 2016 & 2016.5) NOTE: I've been using Pandora and a Sirius/XM APP in the car via my iPhone. Pandora is free, Sirius APP is $4/mo if you already have Sirius in another vehicle. These work reasonably well, but occasionally drop out, requiring me to re-select them via the audio source screen. Mildly annoying, but nothing I can't live with. Here's a warning for music streamers: Watch your cell phone's data usage! I had to up mine to an 8GB/mo plan so as not to have to ration my Pandora listening. Other small nitpicks: No useful armrests. I don't care, but my passenger/navigator/significant other complains about that. The center console lid is too far back to serve as an armrest. There is NO water temperature gauge! We have a prominent tachometer on this automatic-transmission vehicle, but no temp gauge? Call me old-fashioned, but I kind of like to know what's going on BEFORE the red indicator light comes on. The Engine Start button is directly behind the wiper stalk - right where someone not intimately familiar with the car won't look. I'll just assume that's an anti-theft feature. Finally, kudos to Mazda for including a spare tire, jack, and lug wrench. Many car makers nowadays omit these. Having a flat can be a 15 minute roadside repair, or it can be an hours-long wait for a recovery truck after the sealant and compressor "tire repair kit" fails to work. However, did Mazda have to package the spare and tools in a huge chunk of styrofoam under the rear compartment floor? It looks flimsy because it IS flimsy. Even the much-maligned PT Cruiser that I used to have provided a sturdy under-car tire carrier and a tool pouch that stored in a lidded cubby in back. How hard would that have been to do? Overall, this is a really good car. If you like to drive but need a tall wagon, the CX-5 will do nicely. You'll like it even better if you're not as old and cranky as I am.

I have to say I am very impressed with my car right now. I bought my new Mazda back in June and it has all the bells and whistles and a lot of technology in it, as most cars do now. But this is my first one to buy like this. I have to sadly admit, I bought the car because I like the wheels. Yes, I am a typical woman and bought it for its looks, its speed and comfort. I was even made fun of, by a few, because of this reason. Anyway, as I was driving to pick my middle kid up from school, I was going through a school zone in front of the high school. School zone here is 35 mph, and NO I wasn't speeding as most would ask. I was actually almost at a stop because I approached an intersection and with the light turning green I started to accelerate. So as I have my foot pressing the gas, a truck next to me made a sharp turn into my lane to avoid hitting a kid who decided to cross the intersection at the wrong time. Well I guess the kids reaction was to run for some reason...also in front of me. Now mind you, while still pressing the gas (because this was a half second), my car makes some weird noise and it brakes. My car comes to a complete stop in front of this kid! I couldn't register what was happening or why it happened because my hearts beating so fast. My car would not move for several seconds, and an alert came on that said "SmartBrake Support Activated." Something along that line. Although I was not going very fast, this kid could have been seriously injured or run over and killed. With this little bit of technology I would have no doubt, hit him. Well done Mazda, well done!

Previously purchased the CX-3 Grand Touring but found it to be too small after several months. Upgraded to the FWD 2016.5 Grand Touring with everything but the Technology Package, and I couldn't be happier. What I miss from the CX-3: Heads Up display; 4 mpg better fuel efficiency; two-tone interior with burgundy trim. What's better in the CX-5: cargo and passenger room; more powerful engine; overall height; arm rest and storage; electronic E-brake. I would recommend this CUV to anyone who wants efficiency, quality, and driveablilty in an affordable, well-sized vehicle.

I bought this car after owning a 2005 Mazda Tribute for past 11 years and so far I love my CX-5 Touring SUV. I paid $24,500 with the moon roof and bose option which is a decent price for this car and better than what I would have paid for comparable cars such as the Ford Escape and Honda CRV. This car comes equipped with some great standard features such as the info system, back up camera, and heated seats. The drive and comfort of the car is fantastic and I don't have one complaint. Most important, for people like myself who want a car with great power for a 4 cylinder car, this car feels like a V6, which was my number one priority. You can't go wrong with this car.

Looks much the same as 2015 - handles good, good performance - took the original tires off and bought Michelin - smoother ride, handles better and much more tread. If you wear polarized sunglasses you will see patterns of small circles in the rear deck glass. Seems that way in many models of cars, not just Mazda. Quality of glass now?? They may tell you the window is factory tinted, but it is not - just stained without any UV protection. Tinting does not help patterns of small circles disappear either.

The Grand Touring AWD had everything I wanted. 19" wheels, SIRIUS/XM radio and navigation included. Drives great and quiet. I am leasing and may purchase at the end if it continues to please me as it has so far.

I was excited to test drive this car based on all the great reviews. I have several issues with the care: the ride is bouncy. I felt I was in a truck and not in an suv. For 30k the passenger seat should be powered. The side mirrors aren't power folding nor is the steering wheel heated (if you want heated seats). The interior is a bit small as the back seats won't fold flat unless you move the front seats up which isn't good. Overall disappointed for the price point.

Transmission failed just under 5,000. Mazda replaced, no hassle. New tranny feels better than the original ever did.

This car handles well and has great power. After owning for just less than a year we have found the controls for radio etc. is to cramped and the arm rest too far back. With 18000 miles the transmission had to be replaced which was not always shifting and sometimes would just stop all together. Getting Mazda to warranty the transmission was not easy either. The current issue is the tires that come on the cx-5 wear out at 18-20 thousand miles, they grip the road well but it is costly to replace that soon.

Before buying any CUV, test drive other models (ex. Honda CRV, Nissan Rogue, Toyota RAV4, Hyundai and KIA.) For CX-5, love style, instrument layout, cornering, good mileage, and transmission. Having the car for 2 months and couple National Park road-trips and camping trips, I wish I would take AWD instead of FWD.

I've really enjoyed this car the past 5 months. I really don't have any complaints so far. I guess my favorite aspects are the sportiness of it, the brightness of the red color, how easily the back seats fold, and the stereo system. They're a little more expensive than most similarly sized vehicles, but I think it's worth it. I plan on keeping this for quite some time!

All I wanted was a power drivers seat. Narrowed it down to CX-5, CRV, RAV-4 and Encore and drove them all. Encore cargo way too small - out. RAV-4 ride too rough, noisy, and for what you pay you don't get much. to get a power seat had to go up two trim levels from what I wanted to spend - out. CRV - they sure are proud of their vehicles! Felt like I was driving a toaster. yeah, it would get me from point a to point b, but very ho hum and loud ride noise. Again, had to go up trim levels and price to get power seat - absolutely no negotiation. Then I drove the CX-5! Roomy! (my 6ft tall son can sit in the back seat comfortably) Fun! Responsive! nice handling! quiet ride! LOVE LOVE LOVE! Could have gotten the power seat at the touring level - but wound up getting the grand touring (those wheels! sunroof, nav, leather, bose sound, totally loaded!!!)) for LESS than I would have had to spend for a lesser model elsewhere. Best value, best vehicle!

Thought I would be giving up alot of room and comfort. I DO miss my bucket seat arms! But at 6'3, I was really worried about knocking my head getting in and out or not having a good view out the windshield. Voila! I clear the doors just fine, leg room is great and I have as much visibility out of my Mazda as my Sienna gave me out of the front (back window is really small! ) Here's what you need to know if you want a CUV : the CX-5 is far and away the best value for your money! The interior is MUCH nicer than the competition and the driving experience is "soccer mom Sportscar " worthy! Mazda throws in alot of safety extras on the base touring model the others only throw in on their most expensive models, too. Didn't think I would be so pleased with less!

I initially went looking for this SUV for the safety features since I am getting to that age (over 65) where the more help one can get to ensure my safety & others on the road is worth the price. Besides getting all the bells & whistles with a Grand Touring model I also got a SUV that is fun to drive, really nice looking & didn't put a big dent in my pocketbook. There is plenty of room for cargo & since we travel to florida every year for several months packing way more than we need, this SUV handles it nicely. My husband likes it because the front seats are easy to get into, comfortable & are heated (I love that!). I like how driving it you don't feel like it is a "grandma" car but just a fun car overall!

I did research on all the crossovers but kept coming back to the CX5 and I did just buy a 2016.5 sport AWD this SUV is just fun to drive plain and simple the MPG is the best in it`s class I get 25 in the city alone with AWD I have the 2.5 and it delivers, ok it may not be a hot rod but it will go ! when you punch the power and I live in Colorado I have the 6 speed auto witch shifts smooth and quick and when in sport mode it is even more fun steering is quick and responds well seats in the sport are firm they could be a bit better but even the upper trim levels are firm the ride is good and quiet extra noise padding on the 2016 make it pretty quiet some road noise at higher speeds but not enough to give it a second thought I have the navigation and it is quick and easy to use the info system is also quick and boots up fast and is either a touch screen or hand control knob next to the shifter witch works very well and easy to reach and control Bluetooth was quick to pickup my android and works well however text messages read thru the system are only compatible with Samsung or I phone there is ample cargo space for my needs with the rear seats up but both fold down for extra room the sound system is ok for my needs but maybe the upgraded system may be better for some I bought the sport because I didn`t need all the extra bells and such and this sport comes well appointed I am 62 and just wanted a fun car to drive with good MPG and safety this CX5 delivers on all points.....Love my new CX5

I've had lots of cards and only one lemon ---- i liked all my cars except this one; buick somerset (remember them), toyota camry, several ford sables (family & friends), Ford Escape & Toyota RAV4. They were all "fine." I got them with bells and whistles; leather, sunroof, upgraded sound systems, etc. This is the first car I just enjoy driving, love the look, love the feel, love the two-tone leather, love the zoom zoom factor. I am unsure of reliability or resale value so gave that 4 stars - too soon to tell. I hate the navigation - use my Garmin. But I still love, love this car.
