I bought my Legacy brand new with 21 miles, 3 years later And it has over 80k miles on it. I originally bought the car because in Colorado, it's important to have AWD. The car does great in the show and ice and I have no issues in that department. As for my moonroof though, within 2 months of owning my car I had to get the entire moonroof replaced due to significant leaking. I don't know if it's just my car, but it still leaks, not as bad, but it's gotten into the headliner and through the interior lights. Interior is fine, although I regret getting the tan cloth interior, I wish I would've upgraded to the V6 with leather and navigation. The ride could be smoother and the road noise is extremely noisy, which makes it hard to use the Bluetooth. I do, however, love the Eye-sight system with adaptive cruise control. I won't buy another Subaru again though.

It is almost a greatest car. Road handling is great which is why I purchased the car. Interior layout is great. Controls are intuitive and well place. More gauges would be nice instead of the dummy lights. Three very fundamental flaws exist in the drivetrain. The car has grown is size & weight yet the engine has not. The engine can not hold the car going down a hill in any gear even fairly mild one. I think a 3 liter four cylinder would do a better job. Flaw two and three lie in the transmission. First gear is way too high. Parking lots are a clutch riding nite-mare as 7 mph is the slowest possible without the car jumping and bucking. Serious hills require 5000 rpm and long clutch riding to get started on. Chucking the 5th gear ratio and making a new first would solve this. Really, a reverse gear made for 45 mph! Still riding the clutch the car is doing 6 mph is reverse.

I bought this vehicle as an upgrade from the vehicle I had previously been driving for commuting ('98 Grand Prix GT). Pros: Decent gas mileage- I get right around 29.5-30mpg per tank of gas- though it can dip to around 28mpg in winter months. Handling- the ride is a bit stiff, but it handles really well. Looks- Vehicle has very nice styling. Reliability- I've had no major problems so far. AWD- This was the biggest factor in choosing this vehicle. Winter traction is very important to me and this vehicle handles very predictably in snowy/icy conditions. Interior- I'm 6'4" and I have plenty of room, head room is greater than any other sedan I looked at. Rear seats fold down and make it possible to move fairly large objects. Cons: Oil changes/oil usage- more expensive (around $75), though done somewhat less frequently than with vehicles using dinosaur oil. I typically have to add a quart of oil 6000 miles after an oil change, as the engine uses some oil. In 3 previous vehicles (chevy, pontiac, nissan), I've never had to add oil using Dino oil with a 5000 mile oil change interval, I drove the vehicles 175K, 250K, and 260K miles respectively (all purchased new). Intermittent rattle - something in the moon roof rattles occasionally, it seems to happen only within certain temperature ranges, its a bit annoying. Acceleration/transmission- CVT transmission takes some getting used to, feels like driving a golf cart- acceleration is a bit slow, but adequate. Overall, I would buy another, though I would probably opt for the Outback, for more cargo room.

Excellent twist between a sport sedan and daily

Just traded from an 07 Nissan Versa so this is a whole new animal. Very spacious interior with classy color coordination. 6 speed manual is sporty, no doubt, but feels somewhat disconnected and doesn't seat the same as most clutch systems I am used to. I live in Colorado on the Base of the Rockies and bought this car in the dead of winter and it hasn't given me a bit of trouble even in the worst conditions. Very passive handling on the road, so a smooth ride as far as that goes. That being said, it is paired with an award winning drive train AWD, so it sticks to the lane no problem. I am also 6'3", and this car has room to spare with me. Leg room has always been a "make or break" factor with me and car buying, so I am happy to finally "fit in". The aggressive front bumper in the model I have looks sporty and choice, but gives the car a very low clearance so driver beware. I catch about 23 mpg in the city on my daily commute to work. This is a good figure, but certainly not the optimal EPA estimate. Reading some other reviews and I guess there is one consistent problem with these cars: they eat too much oil and coolant. Factory defect, likely but nonetheless mine is currently being looked at to make sure that is the case. If it is not, the warranty is extensive enough to were I would just be able to slide into something new, no harm no foul. Aside from this, well designed and reliable car.

great car!

I work for Pepsi and am driving 500 Miles a week. I only fill up once a week. I get between 450 to 480 Miles before the gas light comes on. I'm seeing these reviews about the stiff ride, and I would have to disagree. I think it rides nice and just like any car should ride. I drive about a third City and the rest highway and get real calculated average of 30 mpg almost Everytime. When it's half And half City and highway and is 29mpg. I think the car is great and the mpg rating is a little underrated by the factory. I would definitely test drive one Amd see for yourself before these crappy comments decide for you. Very nice car.

I have 24,000 miles on my 2014 subaru legacy 2.5 and have had to add a full quart of oil FIVE times already and this is not including the 3 oil changes I have had as recommended at the dealer. Subaru feels this is within specs and refuses to acknowledge a new car should not be burning oil, especially at this high rate. The hands free does not recognize what you are saying and is awkward. Ride is stiff and noisy, the doors do not lock automatically so you have to remember, the heated seats go off and on,again subaru says that's normal, my daughters jetta's seats stay nice and toasty . The AWD is great but other then that I am not impressed, will be trading it in as soon as I figure out what I want, spent a yr researching before I bought this. Will never buy another subaru again, they refuse to stand behind their products and think it's okay to burn a quart of oil in between oil changes on a brand new car

I traded in a 2009 Altima Hybrid that could not make it up hills in Wisconsin winters. The worst front-wheel-drive car I ever drove. But I digress. I did buy the Sport model, as it looked a little sexier than the base. It's as close to a head turner as Subaru can produce. I do like the look. The AWD handles beautifully in this climate, in a city that doesn't like to use salt. However, the ride is punishing. You do feel every bump. After 12,000 miles, it's still stiff. Going Zero-60 takes bloody ages compared to other cars I've driven in this class. I do believe this car can easily go 200K miles.

Poor ride

This is my second Legacy that I have leased and I made a mistake not purchasing the 2011 at the end of the lease. I really loved that legacy. Now I have the 2014 legacy sport and I can not get past the poor ride. On smooth roads you can enjoy the car, but any road that has bumps or cracks is felt. I thought it might be the 18 inch tires or that maybe needed to get broke in a little. I have 13,500 miles on it and no such luck. This is my third Subaru that I have leased, but I am so unhappy with the ride that I will not be leasing from Subaru again.

Stiff Ride negates positives.

I have driven this 2014 Legacy Sport for three months. The reliability of Subaru, all wheel drive and heated seats are all positives that are negated by the poor ride quality. I feel every dip, bump and tar strip in the road and will be trading this after a year. A younger driver might not care about the ride because the car looks sharp and handles well. I owned a 2001 Subaru Outback station wagon for 6 years and it was reliable and a comfortable ride with reasonable handling in not too large of a vehicle. If they built that vehicle today with an improved transmission I think they wood sell a lot of them. I appreciate any comments and criticism. November 19, 2016. After all this time Edmunds has requested that I update this review. I bought the Subaru in April of 2014. When winter and cold weather came around I found out that the heat when set to blow at floor level does not blow on your feet or ankles or legs so you freeze. Nothing worse than cold feet. The front seats were not well designed and even with power driver seat I could not get comfortable , and I take long trip every month from NYC to Massachusetts. The bumpy ride continued and I could not stand it, feeling it smack by backside on every little tar strip. In April of 2015 I traded this car with just over 9,000 miles on it, for a 2015 Nissan Rogue which I have had now for a year and seven months. Smooth ride especially on bumps and I don't feel the tar strips in the road. Very comfortable seats, heat blows on my legs, very large touch screen and navigation with back up camera as well as camera view of all four sides. Very happy with it.

I only had this 2014 Legacy 2.5i Premium for only two weeks. It's my first Subaru. It has a lot of good features, but i'm having a hard time enjoying them. The ride is hard, it seems like you feel every little bumb in the drivers seat. I'm very disappointed! Traded a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix with 136,000 miles, it had it's issues, but rode great and was still fun to drive. Can't say the same for the Legacy. I'll have to give it some time. Maybe it's just me, but I don't think so. I might have to take a lose and try something different. Let me know what you think!

2000 miles and very happy

I purchased the Legacy Limited, leather and had some dealer options put on. The car has been great so far. I am averaging 32.1 mpg, and have had no issues. The defrosters quickly clear the windshield and windows. The controls are simple to use and anything that was more technically advanced was taught/demonstrated by the dealer like setting up my bluetooth and phone. My kids find it cool that my car rings and we can just talk and not have to hold the phone. I tested the car with a decibel app and the interior is very quiet ranging from 50-80 decibels, compared to over 90 with my Pacifica. Update: 65,000 miles and no mechanical issues at all. I just had a major tune up to the cost of $700 but everything was fine. I do mostly highway driving and still have my original tires and brakes. These will get replaced this summer, but there is no abnormal wear. Handles the snow amazingly, great mileage, very comfortable. No wind noise yet and all interior parts are in perfect condition. I had a friend buy a 2016 Legacy based on her loving my car. I have had a few hiccups regarding syncing my phone and car, but that is more user error and my phone than the Subaru. The hood bounce is still noticeable, and no it is not a reflection bouncing. The metal is flexing back and forth but I do not notice it much any more. I have needed no warranty work but do have the extended one until 100K. My son is looking forward to getting this car when he's a driver soon. I can't wait until I get my next Subaru also!
