ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2011-2012 Toyota Avalon vehicles manufactured February 9, 2010, to October 22, 2012. In the affected vehicles, the sub-woofer speaker located in the trunk may experience an intermittent electrical short which may cause damage to the integrated circuit (IC) in the audio amplifier. In some cases, the damaged IC may allow a constant electrical current flow to the sub-woofer.

I'm only 41 but love my 2011 Avalon Limited family vehicle! They don't make cars like this anymore! It's like a living room on wheels, convenient, safe, comfortable, efficient. This is what a big luxury sedan should be. Any complaints are totally mitigated by the car's incredible value when compared to other vehicles (I frankly see no other competition at this price) and the unfortunate fact that cars like this have gone out of style. My wife calls it an "old man car," and that may be true. I respond that for some people it takes a lifetime to realize the beauty of a car like this, we are lucky to appreciate and enjoy it now.

Nice Car ,The Seats Are To Hard And Very Hard To Clean ,Engine Is Very Quiet And Powerful ,The Car Also Sits To Low With 5 People It Will Scrape Coming Out Some Driveways,But It Does Look Nice,Exspecially The Limited But Cost As Much As A Lexus es350 But More Room Inside ,That's One Of The Reasons I Bought The Avalon Instead Of Lexus Es350.

Because of special needs within my family I selected the 2011 Avalon because it had large side windows front and rear, unlike many cars whose rear windows, especially, taper almost to a point, and it has a full bench seat in the rear without the raised bump in the middle that makes it uncomfortable for 3 passengers. Its overall size and ride makes it very comfortable to ride in, and there are many little conveniences built into the passenger compartment that are very useful. Some of these characteristics changed in later year models. When my car was rear ended at 55MPH its collapsible design absorbed the shock and my wife and I both walked away unhurt even though the car was totaled. When replacing the car I searched specifically for a 2011 Avalon same model and am delighted with it.

Really, the ONLY negative things that can be said are the audio system is a bit lacking and the rear seats don't fold down. I love the seats...the thigh support keeps my legs from being fatigued as they do in the Camry. The car just floats down the road. Lexus quality at a fraction of the cost. Tons of leg room, the steering wheel telescopes out far enough (and tilts low enough....think old Buicks) that I can sit back and cruise effortlessly. Even the REAR seats have a feature to tilt back a bit! The Nav system takes a bit of getting used to, but once you get the hang of it it's quite effective. I've owned the car since new....over five years now...and at almost 80,000 miles, I've had no maintenance issues to speak of. Just regular maintenance (tires, plugs) and I can see my land yacht going 200,000 miles EASY. LOVE this car!!!!!

This car does a lot well. Ride is fantastic, acceleration is strong and the sound system is great. I have a Miata for fun and the handling for the Avalon is very respectable. The car is quiet inside but at highway speeds it could be a little quieter. Navigation works well. It can suffer from glare on the screen when sun is low. But the car is easy to live with. Gas mileage is much better than expected for a car this size. The rear seat comfort and room is amazing. It performs well in the snow. The new versions suffer from stiff ride. Find a 2011-12 and hold on to it. 18 months later (57K miles)- still a very enjoyable car. Long trips do not fatigue as seats are comfortable. The only complaint is at highway speeds there is a higher level of interior noise than I would expect for a luxury version. As noted by others glare on navigation screen can be bad depending on time of day and angle of car. Overall still very happy. Mileage has been great and no lack of power from the engine.

Very Good Car but interested in a New one.

I have not had my Avalon too long, but for the time I have had it...I adore it. I have had many other cars, from Ford to Buick to Chevy, etc. I am in love with this car. It drives like a dream. I slammed on the brakes in the rain and it stopped on a dime. If I were in my van I used to have or my truck...I would have wrecked my car. I am so satisfied, I can't believe it.

I purchased my 2011 with 32,000+ miles. the backup camera doesn't show evenly on the navigation screen. It isn't centered on the screen. The dealer told me after I drove it off the lot that all 2011s have this. "It is on all the 2011s". I've asked the dealer 5 weeks ago to drive another 2011 to see if that car has the same problem. So far, he said he hasn't had one to test. If anyone has this problem, please coment. Thank you.

Let me preface this review by saying that the first Avalon I had was excellent. I had it 7 yrs. & traded only because someone hit me. The 2011 Avalon I have now is also an excellent ride, but the wind noise and some of its extras are more trouble than they're worth.

We've had our Avalon for about a year and a half now and have been satisfied. We've had Toyota's since 1989. At 65k, front brake rotors warped & pads needed replacing - at 68k, the rear rotors & pads got replaced. At 70k, inner tie rods got loose and got replaced. We're holding our breath and wondering what's going to be next. Of course, this is the first Toyota that we've kept beyond the 36k mark, so perhaps this brand isn't as reliable as we've always thought? Although we'd hesitate to say this Avalon is a lemon, we've planned on its lasting 10 years...wish us luck.

Exceptional value in its class.

2011 Avalon XLS (Canada) has the competiton beat! Excellent front seat comfort with full power lumbar for driver / passenger. More room than Mercedes E350. Lexus features without the price. This car is quite fast and has a controlled stable ride, and uses regular gas, unlike the competiton. Gas mileage has been 7.5l / 100 km - highway (38 MPG - imperial) and 10.5l / 100 km city. The voice reconition is very good, controls well laid-out and nice NAVI system. Lots of room in the back seat with comfortable seating and tilting seatback is functional. Very good trunk space. Both interior and exterior fit and finish are tight with good alignment. Great car for long trips in varied terrain.

I bought my 2011 Avalon Limited new in Dec.2011. It is not the same quality of my two previous Avalons. Last one was 2002 with 176K miles and it ran smoother and quieter than the new one. Wind comes in window, I'm told it's normal due to mirrow (doesn't do it on passenger side). Rides rough, worse than my husbands F250 4x4 diesel. Lots and lots of road noise. Not a quiet car at all. Rear passenger window broke (fixed now), rear reclining seat broke (part ordered). Brakes feel mushy, Struts seem non-existent. Car really sat low when 2 adults and 2 teens with 4 bags packed (not heavy..trunk too small to pack much). Toyota dealer tells me everything is normal and up to Toyota specs. Bad Car!!

We purchased our Avalon about a year ago. We love it. The gas mileage is great..drives and rides like a dream, sound system is perfect, quiet, great rear seat comfort, in short, for us, a retired couple in our mid-sixties it is the best car we've ever owned and absolutely perfectly matches our needs. We've owned Toyota's for 30 years and we like this one the best. Would highly recommend this car to anyone who wants a comfortable, dependable, quality automobile.

I love my new Avalon. The suspension is smooth without the floaty ride. Rear seat legroom (roomier in class), adjustable rear seat comfort is a nice touch. Great car to own if you have a personal driver. A/C and Nav controls are intuitive and easy to operate. Only tech missing is the adaptive cruise control.

Purchased 2011 Avalon in May 2010. Constant dead battery's. Cannot leave car over 4 days without jumping it. Not informed this is constant problem with this vehicle as it appears it is being hidden. Have much documentation but they will not put their statements in writing. Sticker price was $47,000 and it started just 10 days after taking possession of vehicles. Beware of Toyota Avalons! All back up documentation available . Toyota is ignoring this problem , It will not go away!

Road noise is excessive, I believe it is because of the Bridgestone tires. Also it is difficult to keep car from drifting all over the lane expecially when there is a little breeze. There is no valet lockout for trunk. Volume speed control on radio does not work. Can't see display on radio in daylight. Can't hear directional signal.

Well my 2008 Touring Model was nice, but bot, this 2011 Limited Edition is just great. I would have never expected it to be that much smoother, quieter, more comfortable then the '08, but man IT IS! Now I had been considering a used LS 460 L, and if they had come to my terms, I would be owning one. Not sure if this would have been a bad / good thing. The LS L was a 2008 with 22,000 miles (45,000 less then my Avalon), and a great car, but a bit more and I had a budget I was going to stay with. Now the local Toyota dealer had just purchased a lot of promotional / print matter from us, so it did sway me a bit. Bottom line, right now I Love the car. Is there things I'd like changed - yes

I love this car. I have had if for two months and have put about 7000 miles on it. Having come from an SUV the last 15 years, the ride on the Avalon is a big plus. I really like the cabin room, smooth transmission and engine, and the overall classy interior. I have been averaging about 23 mpg combined, and have seen 29 mpg on the interstate. The radio and controls are easy to view and use. I have the base radio and its works great and even sounds great for a standard system. The only issue that I have is I could use a little more trunk room.

Wow, are we impressed. This vehicle is such a great road car. Quiet, smooth ride, with lots of punch if you need to pass. 30+ MPG on the highway and 23-24 in town. Love the new dash re-design and the six-speed automatic. You can barely tell it's shifting. Plenty of room both in the front and back. Heated/cooled seats are a joy. Our friend, who drives a Lexus LS460, said our Avalon was quieter than his LS, and just as smooth on the open road. Our final choice was between the Avalon and a Genesis. Genesis was a nice vehicle; however, comparably equipped, the Avalon was thousands less and we liked the FWD for our snowy winters. Test drive it for 30 minutes or more and you'll be sold.

Moved from an ES350 and really like the better visibility, ride (no boat float), comfort and especially much less road noise. Do hear the wiper motors and the whine of the transmission. Had to change out the horrible noisy wiper blades. Very cheap interior by comparison to others in class. It really has great handling compared to others in class. Not sure I will buy another until they get a better interior.

I bought this car to replace a 12 year old camry. I thought I was moving upscale but after 3 months I have my doubts. The car runs smooth and has good power, satisfied with the mileage. The materials seem cheap. The panels on the exterior are poorly fit together and don't line up to each other anywhere. Everything is plastic. So far the airbag light was stuck on, they had to replace the seat belt latch. The trunk wouldn't close unless I slammed it hard as I could, they had to redrill and move the latch a little, the rubber weather stripping around the sun roof started peeling back, they glued it down, and now my compass keeps sticking on NE. I prefer my old Camry, more comfortable.

There are two design deficiencies I have noted so far. Foremost, there is a severe glare of the dash on the windshield when driving into the sun or with the sun on your left shoulder and hitting the dash. The "hump" over the instrument panel reflects onto the windshield directly in the drivers view. I have not experienced anything of this magnitude in my 73 yrs. Secondly, and a minor flaw, when the sun shines on the digital clock the white numbers become red and you don't see the actual time. For example, at 3:43 pm I was seeing "1388" in red numbers. I blocked the sun and saw the correct time with white numbers. I would not have bought had I been aware of the reflection.

I traded es350 a great car which was my fourth Lexus and I cannot be more pleased. This is the smoothest and quiet car on road yes there is body lean at times, but to those of us know and are not caught up in cornering and skid-pat testing who love real world driving this is a great car

Just picked up a new Pearl White/Ivory Limited. Traded in my 2005 XLS on it. I like almost everything about the car. Did much cross shopping with LaCrosse, Genesis and ES350. All great cars. Was down to the ES and the Avy. I went with the Avy over the ES because I felt I got more value. The 4 yr warranty and great dealership experience was basically matched by the 25,000 mi 2 yr free maintenance. The past experiences of my 3 previous Avalons was the deciding factor. I am dead center in the target audience for the Avalon and I appreciate many of the features, like clarity of instruments and displays. The car is full of goodies I am still finding. Really enjoy the improvements from 2005.

My 2011 Avalon has problems with the rear window sun screen, heater/AC, and windshield wipers, the GPS is useless and the wind noise is worse than any car I a have ever owned. I've owned and run a BMW shop for 33 yrs. but for many reasons my last several new cars have been been Toyotas, three of which have been Avalons ('02XL,'05Touring,'11Limited). After 5 years of owning the '05, I looked extensively at alternate brands, but decided on the '11. Toyota changed it just enough for me not to feel it to be a clone of the '05(which I've kept). Beautiful inside and out, excellent assembly, up to a calculated 33/34 hwy MPG (on 87 octane), as fast as an '86 Buick Grand National muscle car I bought new way back when, tomb- like interior quietness, reliable track record, JBL, very competitive pricing. Wow, what's not to like?! Best "full" size sedan value on earth.

Being in the tire business and an auto enthusiast, I was skeptical at first as I had looked at a Lexus product also. This car has a smooth ride, amazing back seat room, a powerful engine and just delivered an amazing 32.1 MPG on a recent interstate drive. This auto is a "well kept" secret that needs to be unleashed on the automobile public who enjoy a smooth ride, volumes of interior room, etc. and is competitive with Lexus in value and features!

I owned 2006 and 2010 Avalon Limiteds. The 2011 is bit better. I don't know why, but fuel mileage increased over 2010, but it's a good thing. Pavement noises are pretty much absent. Riding over pavement irregularities is superb. Space, ergonomics, textures, panels, grains, and the like fit well, look, well, and are pleasing to the eye. I've never purchased the navigation system. The engine and transmission are smooth. Heating, including the seats, and air conditioning are wonderful. Blizzard Pearl and the beige leather are fine color combinations. Low road and wind noise. I don't understand the "9" ratings for MPG, but at 75 MPH I get 34-35 on road. Needs more thing support.

The 2011 exterior and interior design is very appealing. The engine is spunky. Car is fun to drive and oozes with luxury, quality, safety, and class. We're proud to drive the car and it has the new Toyota five point safety system on it. Engine is not as efficient as the same engine was in our 2006 Avalon.

I am in the shopping process & have driven nearly every competitor & rate the Buick Lucerne as the best in this class overall. The Avalon does not offer the Blind side warning system, chrome wheels & the trunk is much smaller than the Lucerne which costs less w/the discounts available. The Avalon is faster but the exterior look is dated & not as impressive in my opinion as the Lucerne. Ford is out of the game w/their ugly Taurus which has an almost useless trunk & such poor visibility that it is a wonder the NTSB allows it on the road? The foreign buck boards are reserved for the road & track people.

Is it Lexus LS/GS. No is 2011 AVALON

I'm not sure why people say its an old person car maybe i think they don't know the history or to much knowledge about cars or possibly in my opinion they see other people driving and want to but the same cars. Anyways to me Avalon is very very comfortable, Great interior,GREAT everything.Yes i use to think AVALON was an old person car until i saw the 2011. I previously owned g37, bmw3 series, lexus gs and other vehicles but so far the best is the Avalon. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CAR.Trust me you cannot go wrong. Just so you can know I am 31 yr old. You don't have to be in 50s or 60s to own one go out there and test drive. Trust me you will enjoy the ride.

I traded my Lexus LS430 for the Avalon and so far I really like it. It handles better than I expected and the gas milage has been fantastic! It has all the amenities I was wanting and so far has been trouble free. I drove 900 miles in one day last week (yes, 900 miles) and the journey was pretty comfortable the whole trip! So far I am very happy with my purchase. The car is no stunner in the looks department but I like it and prefer a less-flashy car in these times. Also, to the poster who said it was ugly why would you buy it based on all the negative comments you made? Didn't you see it / test drive it before you bought it? Maybe get help before your next purchase next time.

Within the first week of ownership completed a one day 830 mile trip. Really smooth, quiet, comfortable, fuel efficient car. Computer said we got 29.9 mpg at 70++ mph. Not a canyon carver but handles well enough for legal speeds. Braking is okay but not stellar, best you could say is it gets the job done without drama. JBL sound system has excellent separation and frequency range. Blue tooth is a plus. Floor mats are black, a little strange. All dash controls are easy to reach and well lit even in bright light. Manual tilt and tele. Seats are supportive even though flat but sit a little to low even when adjusted as high as they go. Headlights light up the night.

I've never bought a new car but when my 1998 Q45 clipped over 200K miles it was time. Looked at the SHO, but too bulky for my taste. Avalon Limited was an easy choice, lots of great features and a very economical price. Immediately took it on a 2K road trip and got great gas mileage, wonderful handling. I love this car. Clean and simple.

We love our new Avalon. It is roomy, comfortable, quiet and smooth riding. I am apparently one of the few who like all of the new styling updates as well. Maybe that’s because at 66, I’m in their target demographic. I think it’s the best car I’ve ever owned. It’s remarkable how much power it has and yet I get 22+ mpg in town and 30+ mpg on the highway. It’s a great car for road trips.

This car is a terrific full size sedan, roomy and comfortable with all the amenities I need. But the driver's seat is too firm for my taste and could use more padding. Visibility is poor toward the rear and side. Handling is fine; those who say it handles like a 60's 'luxo barge' don't know what they're talking about. I've owned many large sedans in the 50's - 70's and none approaches the handling of this Avalon. The HID headlamps illuminate my whole field of vision and at night the bright clarity makes me feel like I'm in a space ship. The MPG dashboard display is an unnecessary distracting toy. A glaring mistake is the absence of a sun visor extension. Interior fit/finish is top notch

After looking at others vehicles of similar size and power, the Avalon not only was the cheapest with most options, their price was less that 2010 models, with same equipment, second vehicle with sat radio a plus, not as exciting as a Taurus Sho, but better mpg and more rear seat room. Still learning the Nav system but finally conquered phone.

A luxury car, that is selling for an increasingly luxury price. Great quite ride which is much better handling with better road feel than I expected. The comfort and features of the interior are great. Styling is just like every other car now, boxy high sides and cat eye windows. Vision is restricted in all the new cars and it is in the Avalon too. None of these manufacturers have an original idea. If you are paying the extra 10% for the limited, the car should at least say limited on it.

Purchased in April 2010. My first Toyota and hoping the Avalon lives up to it's name. At the present I am experiencing a problem with the back window shade. It goes up and down at random times. Have no idea what sets this off. Any suggestions before I take to dealer?

Traded off my 2005 Avalon Ltd. with 90,000 miles and after much research went back to a 2011 Avalon LTD. Gas mileage is great. I can get 30-32 mpg on the open road and around 27 mpg mixed. The navigation system is a little hard to figure out and backing is a little difficult even with backup camera. Love the XM/Sirius option. Lots of room inside and big trunk space

I waited to long to find a 2010 xls with the color that I wanted they were gone but there a few used demo models they had to many miles 3000 plus on them. I guess when Toyota offered a $3000.00 rebate this made the 2010 a lot better buy. My new 2011 Limited has alot of things that most people( myself included) would be better off with out. 1. the vented seats the holes are ugly and get dirty real fast. 2. the new dash gauge is hard to read the gear selection drive (D) is between two small circles. 3. why does the odometer go in large numbers 10-30-50-70-90-110 and so on in twenty (20) mile per hour increments, very hard to judge speed between. 4.The navigation outdated.

Between my family and I we have owned every model of Avalon Toyota has ever made. They've never been particularly striking cars, but they've been great bang-for-the-buck and the rear legroom is unbeatable. The 2011 exterior changes that, it looks 1000 times better. Unfortunately the interior seems to have been downgraded. The "faux-wood" has less shine and looks like a rental car and the fake brushed metal (plastic) center console is ugly and overhangs the rest of the dash by a good inch. The quality of the stitching in the rear seats seems lower as well. I really wanted to like this car based on the tech/look upgrades, but the interior changes are low rent. New version in 2 years.

I recently picked up a 2011 Avalon as my new company car. Before getting company cars I have owned both the Lexus ES and GS models. While the Avalon is not a Lexus, its total package could be classified between the ES and GS. Ride and handling soft, but everything is a trade off.

This is the most comfortable car I have driven in 48 years of driving. Very roomy interior; feels like a luxury car. I road tested the BMW, Infinity, Lexus, and Acura. Avalon beats them hands down in every respect. Unless you want to pretend you're an Indy driver, this car has the best road feel. I recommend you test drive this car before making a purchase on another similar vehicle.

I owned the first Avalon made and many in between and the most recent 2008. I was doubtful about the changes in styling for the 2011 that I read about. Well, I bought the Avalon and fell in love with the changes to the interior. It seems more upscale. The dash is beautiful. The exterior styling is an improvement. People ask me when I got my Lexus. I say it's an Avalon, they are surprised. I couldn't be happier. I have no complaints at all. The car drives like a dream. I can't wait to drive it every chance I get. It's so quiet. I love the blue tooth, so easy to get it going. I never thought I would pay for satellite radio, but I got hooked. The memory drivers seat is so wonderful.

This is my third Avalon, from 2005 to 2008 to the new 2011, all Limiteds. Each one was better than the last and this is the best yet. I got the new zephyr blue color and it is absolutely stunning. This "redesign" is not much different than the old version but it still looks great and current. Smooth, comfortable, and quiet ride, back seat that feels like a limo. Newly upgraded NAV system with back-up camera. All the bells and whistles you want in a luxury vehicle. I cannot understand why anyone would pay double the price for a Lexus LS.

I've had a 1999 Avalon for the last 8 years, so I'm already a fan of the brand. Ordered the Avalon from the dealer, requesting Cypress Pearl/Ivory with upgraded stereo and 5 pc mat set only. It ended up taking a little over 2 months from order date, 45 days if you're counting from build date. The car was definitely worth waiting for. The thing that strikes me most is the quietness in the cabin, whether on a city street, county road, or highway. The quality of workmanship is excellent. The exterior is pleasing yet not exactly attention grabbing true, but I don't really need attention, didn't buy the car for that. The interior is more important to me, and I'm very happy with that.

Driving 35K a year in an economy car has the body calling out for more comfort. Compared every luxury/full size car available from BMW to KIA. When you total everything up: MPG/Comfort/Fuel Type/Maintenance/ Price/Features/ Reliability and Design the Avalon is a pretty clear choice. New cabin is clean, clear and concise which instills in you a feeling of unpretentious elegance. The cocoa bean metallic paint is possibly the best color available by any manufacture this year. I have only had mine two weeks but fully expect my Avalon to be a trusted part of our family for the next 10 years.

I bought a '11 Limited after looking at pre-owned '09 & '10. The car just oozes quality. Unbelievable power from a V6 in a large car, especially given the outstanding gas mileage. I get 26- 29 mpg. Nice styling changes to the front & rear ends as well as the dashboard. NAV has been improved & has a backup camera, too. Several optional items are now standard. In reality the price for the Limited has gone down! Before you buy a competitor, drive the Avalon. Dollar for dollar you can not beat it!

Very pleased with the car. It has met or exceeded my expectations. Did a lot of research before buying. This is my 1st full size/luxury car. It's a lot of money but it's a heck of a lot of car! With the problems Toyota's reputation is facing today incredible discounts are out there on even new 2011's. But even their MSRP prices beat the snot out of the competition. Tremendous engine, transmission, ride & comfort. Quick as this car is it gets phenomenal mileage. Once you've driven one, you will want it!

Ours arrived w/black mats we didn't want. Imagine a beautifully designed kitchen, w/a black plywood floor? To the eye, black is a size reducing color. Seems like black mats are up to our knees. Bought first 2011 Limited in Texas. Previously owned 2005, 2006 and 2008 Avalon Limited. 2011 has a little more 'sporty' look (more so than pictures show) More obvious to someone who owns a current model than a non owner. Interior dash board changes and updated Navigation system a big plus. Many "optional equipment" items now standard. Sticker price about $2,000 less than comparable 2010 models. (perhaps to line up price wise to 2010 Lacrosse) MPG 'claims a one MPG improvement. No laser guided Cruise control on 2011 models, dealers don't know why. Dealer did come off sticker more than expected,With base difference on MSRP I feel I paid a $2500 premium for 2011 vs 2010.
