FJ is a good, solid off-road vehicle. I have the manual six speed. I am 66 and have driven a standard shift since I was a teenager. But it pains me to say with my arthritic joints, I just cannot handle the clutch and shifting any longer. This vehicle is also a bit rough on the road. With the full-time four wheel drive and all the computer management, it rides straight and true on the slippiest of roads. I did all the factory scheduled maintenance and have not had a single issue or anything break in my six years of ownership. If I was younger, the rough ride and shifting would not bother me at all. I was never the luxury car type, but now it is time I get a vehicle with some cush. I really hate to depart with FJ, but it is time I go luxury. Not exactly a family car, but is great for camping, outdoor stuff, off roading, that type of thing, or for someone like me that just likes an off-road type of vehicle to drive. And, oh my goodness, so good-looking!!

Now with almost 30000 miles on the clock, my FJ is perfect. Bought it from new, and it cost next to nothing to maintain. The only issue here in a hot country, is that the tires seem to let go easily. Already changed them 3 times, and now this is the 4th time, although i did not run it for long. going for the huge BFGoodriches this time, for better on/off road experience. I advise anyone who is looking for a real off-roader + comfy cruiser to buy it.

This is my first Toyota, and I bought it new, a 2010 Trail Teams Edition. After 50K miles, I have not had to repair anything. In fact, there isn't even a rattle or squeak. I have taken it off road and it has performed well. There are negatives about the vehicle, but you should know them before you buy. The vehicle has blind spots, not because there aren't enough windows to see the vehicles, it is because the vehicle is so tall, that most passenger cars are below the view of the window. Remember, this vehicle was designed for off-road, and ground clearance is important. A couple cheap convex mirrors cures this problem. The gas mileage is average for an SUV, but this is obvious too. UPDATE at 105k miles. No problems or complaints to discuss. No mechanical problems of any kind. I just replaced the rear brakes.

I traded my Camry Hybrid in for my FJ and have no regrets. My decision was simply because I needed something that can tote hockey gear one weekend, camping the next, take the dogs and boys to the beach and than a nice trip antique shopping. Wish I had my FJ when my boys were younger and spilling their red slushes and smashing food on the floor. They are a little older now and don't care climbing in and out of the back seat. We have a 4runner, z71 and a cj5 and the FJ is the one we take for family outtings. I was learning towards a Sequoia at first, but found it to be too fancy and I wanted something that can get dirty and clean up easy.

It's not for everybody, but its for me!!

I purchase a 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser in the spring of 2009 after suffering through another Chicago Winter with my Honda Accord. Two tires and rims at a cost of nearly $1000 after hitting a few potholes prompted my decision. Also, I needed a vehicle to pull my snowmobiles and our small lexus RX350 was just barely up for the task. Having put nearly 40K on the truck since I purchased it I can honestly say that there is nothing the city can throw at me that it can't take. This recent February the Blizzard of 2011 dropped nearly 20" of snow in 24 hours. With stock tires this truck blasted through drifts up to the hood, through rutted tracks upto the doors with ease, just keep on the gas..

I've been driving Toyota's since college. Original Toyota truck, 4Runner, Highlander, 96' Tacoma; you get the picture. But, the FJ is by far my favorite Toyota that I've owned over the past 20 years. Unique styling, excellent power, good interior that's very forgiving to active lifestyles, and comfortable ride. Gas mileage is fair but it's a real SUV, not a wannabe. And for the so called "blind spots", 2 small blind spot mirrors work like a charm!

In spite of some minor design issues, the FJ is the best do-it-all, purpose built SUV on the market. If you don't need/want 4 full doors and don't routinely haul adult back seat passengers, it is extremely comfortable and spacious. It is absolutely the best vehicle I have ever owned for off road performance and handles winter road conditions with ease (I have had three jeeps - no comparison). The blind spot issue has received too much attention. If you know how to use rear/side mirrors you will not have a problem. Wind noise is surprising low in spite of cool "rolling brick" aerodynamics. Bullet-proof engine and transmission. Interior is simple and controls are well thought out. FUN!

Awesome Vehicle! Drove all the competitors and this one outshines them all. Have had it up the Cascade Mountains already and gave the 4H, 4L, and All-Trac a workout. Great handling off road and on. Visibility is not an issue and the rear seat access is not a problem. Fun to drive all around.

Just got the FJ. I had a Land Cruiser about 10 years ago and regret selling it. Haven't had it in the dirt or snow yet and can't wait to do so. It's great on the road, you forget you're in a serious 4X4. The rear view camera helps with the blind spots when parking. My wife spent her teen years off roading and she is eager to get the FJ dirty. It's a challenge with the doors and our two boys. But the 12 year old isn't complaining as he will take this car over when he is 18. Safe and solid, we will sleep better knowing he will be in the FJ. Now who's got my old Land Cruiser? Can I have it back please? I miss it a little less now that I have this creature.

Let's be realistic for a moment; this is a vehicle designed with a specific type of person in mind. This person will probably fold the back seats down and never unfold them again (or just remove them completely). The FJ Cruiser is a sport utility vehicle, as SUVs were intended to be, designed to access a favorite fishing hole, cart a deer carcass home for dressing, or carry a roof-top-tent to the top of a mountain. It is not the over-grown station wagon that the modern SUV has come to be. The FJ Cruiser has a cult following of outdoor enthusiasts, eccentrics and adventurers who's definition of practicality doesn't involve DVD players, electric folding third rows, and "a car-like ride".

Only have 1000 miles since new but so far this vehicle is great. Quiet, built very strong under vehicle, fully box welded frame, large transfer case, big drive shafts, 2010 has more horsepower and you can feel it. Very comfortable up front seating for all day rides, nothing compares to it. Also 2010 uses reg unleaded.

The FJ is fantastic for what it is designed for: High ground clearance off-road and deep snow traversing. This is not a CR-V/Rav4Tucson or RX350. You have to give up some on road comfort for the off road abilities and, spec to spec, the FJ puts the Jeep to shame, especially when you consider the poor reliability of a Jeep. This is the perfect Zombie Apocalypse Survival vehicle. Drive it first for a while to see if you can handle the visibility and uniqueness of the cabin. If you can drive a panel van, the FJ is a piece of cake! Add the backup camera and rear sensors and its effect. For everyone? NOPE. This is not a Mall Assault Vehicle but one with a purpose. Drive it and you will see.

I am surprised these are not more popular. I traded in my 2005 4Runner and like the FJ better so far. The lack of gas mileage in my opinion is overrated...it's not too bad at around 19-20 mpg for me. The back seat room is decent and the blind spot isn't THAT big of a deal too me.

I've driven the 2009 Jeep & xterra both 6mt and neither compare to my fj 6mt; because of the full-time 4x4 it accelerates & handles just like a Forester xti. In heavy and deep snow 8-12" it's amazing, no need to even touch the transfer shifter. Vsc and traction control are an excellent compliment to the full-time system. I love the waterproof interior. I'm 5,11 & often have my 6,2 and 6,4 friends seated behind me comfortably, though not for 3 people. Under 60 mph and I get 22 mpg, over 65 and it's about 16- 17 mpg highway. In my opinion the 6mt full 4x4 make it worth it's awkward looks, if you're thinking 5 at your better off with an xterra same difference more practical unless you like fj's looks

This SUV is a blast to drive with an ample amount of power, great handling that is almost sports car like and pretty good gas mileage in the 2010. The dreaded "blind spot" is virtually nonexistent with the mirrors. I have more fun driving this vehicle than any vehicle that I have ever owned.

I thought about the fj for two years, and then in a matter of 5 hours went to Larry Miller Toyota and bought one. Silver with White top. Looks fantastic. Runs great. Lots of power. Very quiet when cruising. Great unique styling, nothing really like it. Smooth ride. Very stable. Safe on snow and ice. Sits up high. Long trips are very comfortable. Plan to keep it forever.

Looks Cool, Fun to Drive and Durable.

I have considered buying a FJ since 2006. However the radical design gave me mixed feelings. I was so use to buying boring but practical cars like Accords and Camrys. Buying a FJ would be a drastic departure from my norm. I finally realized that I wanted a vehicle that invoked passion. I wanted a personality (not just a truck). So I purchased the 2010 TT. I am glad I waited. The 2010 version addressed a lot of the short comings of the FJ including - Back-up Camera, reduced turn radius, improved gas mileage and standard unleaded gas. I plan to keep it for at least 10 Years.

To light almost got killed in a wrangler in snow.. Now have fj cruiser 2007 with trd exhaust automatic. It has a unreal stereo. All factory Its capable of going anywhere my jeeps would gol.My cousin has a rock crawler with 25ooo grand in it and my fj will go almost anywhere his will.. How many vehicles come factory with flex suspension... I absolutely love it .. wouldn't trade it for anything out there.. It's refined and rugged and sounds unreal.. the trd exhaust it awesome.

What I had read was true. The gas mileage isn't great, there are blind spots, and the suicide doors are sometimes inconvenient. Still, I am absolutely in love with my FJ. It sits tall, handles extremely well on the highways, and is the most comfortable car I've ever driven. I live in Ohio, and we have gotten an unusual amount of snow this year. I'm never worried about getting stuck and feel extremely safe driving it.

This is a head turning vehicle with lots of performance. The Special Edition TT is only available in Sandtone and it is sharp. The wheels really make it. Roof rack going on next week. It feels like it's very well constructed. It's not about luxury, it is about off road. I think it's got plenty of power. I have to admit, I do miss the heated seats.

So far I am loving this vehicle. The FJ seems to be put together better and feels sturdier. Power is decent for the size, it will go when you need it to. Inside is decently comfortable. I didn't waste time on some options such as the power inverter, it barely powers a coffeemaker!

Here in the northern plains it's about extremes. Snow, cold, heat, wind, and distance. 40 miles to the nearest hospital. 60 miles to the nearest Wal-Mart. Getting there and back in the winter, can be a matter of survival. For fun times, and weekend exploring, the FJ will go most anywhere you ask it to. Although, not perfect, what it does do, it does very well. Comfortable on the highway, and competent when the going gets tough. Visibility and economy, are non-issues, given the overall package. Had 4 Jeeps over the last 30 years, and they never let me down. The FJ fits my needs, and I'm very happy with it.

It is an off road vehicle and better than a jeep. However, it has no visibility, like sitting in a bath tub. The cargo room and back seat is a joke. It is made well but a little outdated and the retro design at times is ugly. The engine is underpowered compared to an xterra and it is really a 2 seater vehicle. It is slow on the highway and the 4wheel drive system is horrible for the highway. I have my regrets.

Since getting rid of my Wrangler (with the anticipation of a second child), I didn't have a great deal of choices for a good off-road SUV that would accommodate them. Enter the FJ and the 4- door Wrangler. I love the style of the Wrangler but that's where it ends. Safety #1, Power and Fuel Economy #2, Capabilites #3, and Amenities #4 all point toward the FJ. It wins in every category. The FJ is powerful, drives great, and is styled differently enough to stand out in a sea of 4-Runners and Xterras. I have two small girls and we get around in it great. True, it has less back seat room than my wife's RX 330 but it is adequate. What is given up in some area is more than made up for in others.

The engine is very powerful with a lot of low end torque, great exhaust note too. The suspension is made with off roading in mind and is a bit floaty with some body roll in the turns. Regardless though it is surprisingly fun to drive. Also very smooth/comfortable on the road/hwy. Was worried about wind noise w roof rack but no more than my Explorer had. Gas mileage avg 19 mpg mixed. Not bad considering: 4200 lbs, powerful engine, big tires, and styling sacrifices some aerodynamics. Back seat tight getting in/out but don't really ever use.

Excellent quality and ride, very fun to drive. I was impressed by the power and suspension. Also, noise level is outstanding.
