I don't even know where to begin. We are in a time crunch and needed to buy a car and we had always heard that Toyotas were very reliable and dependable. We are loyal Honda owners however we figured we'd give a Toyota a chance. We bought a used 2007 RAV4 with clean car fax from a reputable dealer and low miles (72k, which for a nine-year-old car is great). The dealership had changed the oil and done a complete tuneup before selling the car to us, however we had the oil change just 3000 miles later after we bought it and the person changing our oil said he couldn't believe the car was still functioning because there was almost no oil left. This is a consistent problem with Toyotas. We also had issues with the engine making noises and check engine light coming on sporadically. The car would shake and rattle and we had to have the oil changed four times in the less than six months we owned it. The worst part was when the air conditioner died and all of the coolant was leaking out through the front onto the driver and passenger's feet!! If you're considering buying a used RAV4, please look into the fact that this year had over 12 recalls alone. There are known issues and the dealerships and Toyota are not good at taking care of these issues. They tried to put a Band-Aid on them and people like me suffer. I shouldn't have needed to buy a new car six months after owning this one. It is such a shame. From now on I am only buying Honda. For those of you thinking about this model please run don't walk. Look for a 2001 or 2002 Honda CRV. Much more reliable or you could get a Honda element which is even larger interior space and much more dependable.

2007 RAV4 was the first car I ever owned! And I loved it, I'm sad to say that I totaled it after three years. I never had any problems with it at all, I put one set of new tires on it and had oil changes and that was it. Comfortable, spacious, good turn radius, decent gas milage and cute. Just don't t-bone a blue mustang and it should last you a really long time like most toyotas.

Original owner, 204K miles. Have a V-6, Limited -- which is the same engine they are putting in Highlanders now, I believe. I did have to replace the charcoal canister last year ($1200) but otherwise have only changed oil, tires, and battery. My mechanic thinks it will go another $100K miles. At almost 9 years old now, this car has exceeded every expectation I have for it, and probably will cause everything I own after it to not live up to expectations. I have done everything in this car. My kids have grown up in this car. If I had kids of driving age, I would make them drive this car. Best car purchase I have ever made.

I love this car. My uncle gave it to me after he no longer needed it. I drive it to school and basketball games and everything. I love the commanding view and it is relatively easy to park. It's a stylish and fun SUV and my friends always complement the interior (dashboard). I This car is very very dependable and I will use it in college and probably forever!

2007 Rav 4 First 100,000 miles= a real problem At 80,000, external oil line blew- lost all oil but was just coming up an I 95 ramp so I was able to save engine- This occurred before the recall- - Bad battery in the first 18 months. - $600 air bag electronic line went bad- no recall. - Disk brake rotor plate- front and rear and to be replace- under 60,000 miles. 100,000- to 238,000 - Car works like a Toyota - and even get much better mileage than the first 100,000.- Bottom line- the engineering team should have been fired.

Repair done in 2hrs, very unhappy & will be trading in for another brand near future. I feel this was design flaw in system & toyota not taking resposibility. My next car won't be Toyota. kkb3130

I am on my third, very expensive, water pump replacement. Toyota recalls for everything and they should certainly cover this one!!!! It is a design flaw for sure.

At 17,603 miles the water pump needed replacement which entailed removing the engine to get to the pump due to poor design. Fortunately the repair was under warranty. At 28,748 miles the car needs a new steering shaft which is not covered under the warranty because the car is already six years old; total cost at dealership service was $236.52 for the part and labor will be determined when I get he repair done.

The engine on my 07' Rav4Sport blew up at 86k miles. I had all repairs, replacements, even oil changes performed solely at Toyota dealerships. Something shoots out from inside the engine while I'm driving on the fwy one day, spews ALL of the oil out from inside, about 6-8 quarts, my rear wheels kicking that sludge back up onto that stupid rear gate with the tire on it while I desperately try to exit the fwy. I get it towed to the dealership where I had gotten an oil change 6 days prior; to find that there is a 3 sq inch hole in the bottom block and that I need a new engine. I take this up with corporate, aaand they're nice enough to offer me $1k toward the purchase of a new lemon.

the first Rav 4 I had (2006) was a "lemon" as whenever it rained the car flooded. So Toyota did replace the car after I got a lemon law attorney. This 2007 is guzzling oil and the representative I just spoke with me told me 1 quart for every 1000 miles is normal. WHO ARE THEY KIDDING? And the car has had maybe 6 recalls. Toyota deserves to be out of business.

My 2007 RAV4 ran dry on oil at 96,000 miles. Always maintained in a reasonable manner. Dealer and manufacturer refused to help offset repair cost that included replacing the 2.4 AZ-FE engine. There is a technical service bulletin addressing the design flaw of the 2AZ-FE engine, specifically related to the piston and ring assembly (TSB-0094-11). Reall list for this RAV4 includes intermediate shaft in steering column, Faulty air bag sensor, Rear lower control arm failure, unexpected acceleration and power widow switch fire hazzard to name a few. This list doesn't include the many TSB's affecting quality, namely the excesive oil consumption bulletin.

Just paid off my 2007 rav4 when it blow a motor. The water pump is located in the back and it broke. My wife drove it and blow up the motor. 8 grand for a new one. Even if she did not blow it up, the water pump is on the back of the engine. This requires the motor to be pulled to change it out. A $2000 to $3000 job depending on where you get it done. I had electrical problems. Tire wear issues, brake problems. All the senors would randomly go off on it. The Tire pressure senors where always needing replaced. I ended up junking the car, basically threw 20K down the drain. I know 2 other people that have had issues with water pump or rear main seal. And they all had there engines blown.

Brought a 2007 rav4 used few years back.i live on a hill so first thing i replaced the brakes and tires and brought some good yokohoma's from tire rack and felt the difference in handling the factory tires are horrible. you get about 19 to 20 miles city + highway. the ride is still stiff you do feel bumps. only thing i have done on the car is change tires,brakes , oil filter, air filter and cabin filter for the last years other wise no major issue..A.c does give out some stench even after getting serviced and cleaned.. going for a Subaru forester after reading some reviews..

Bought our RAV with 32k miles on it and have owned it 3 yrs now. Previously I had an '01 RAV which I just loved. This one is a very good car, but somehow not as satisfying. It has been reliable and versatile and pleasant, but I did like the seats, styling and overall size better in the old one. This car is more of a soccer mom car and since I don't have kids, I'm considering trading it for something more fun and sporty for a change.

Bought it new in 2007, I have around 50,000 miles on it now. I'm getting my 3rd transmission put in. The original failed at 25k with a cracked output shaft, and the 2nd one is whining constantly due to a poorly honed final drive gear. The steering shafts pop under stress, and the rear diff makes an odd THUNK when shifting into Drive from reverse. I'm on my 3rd set of tires, and I've already had to replace the front pads and rotors. Having said that, it's an awesome vehicle in the snow. Great power from the V6, plenty of room for 4. Just wish it had held up better.

I bought my Rav4 used about a year and a half ago. No, problems up until recently. My Rav turned 90,000 miles and I took it in for an oil change and the mechanic told me that the water pump was failing. Normally, this is a pretty simple repair on most cars but for the V6 specific Rav4 the water pump is buried behind the engine and requires the mechanic to lift or drop the engine to get to the water pump. So, it's about a 700-1000 issue to fix and most all V6 Rav's will need this nearing 100,000. Just a heads up! Otherwise, I love my Rav4!

Good: Many trips with family and dog via 3rd row seating. Love the V6. Has great pull into traffic. Lots of room, especially in the cargo. 61k miles in 4 years. Great little basic car. Runs smoothly and well. My paint/finish is holding up well. Negative: Replaced Driving Shaft @dealer =$500. Broken Joint on shaft. Should have a recall on that since it seems to be common that should not happen on a car this new. Interior does seem kind of loud and seats are basic. Don't like the floor mats.(hard to clean) Needs stronger front bumper. Wheel wells also rusting out, would like better coverage on the hubcaps.

This is my first Rav4 and i love the way this suv drives and handles. A very nice quiet comfortable ride and great handling. The V6 engine in this vehicle is silky smooth and is very powerful and refined. Love that V6 ! owned a 2007 CR-V but Toyota has a much better SUV. My rav4 has 140,000 km (90 000 mi) and still looks and drives like new !

Paint chipping since day of purchase

I have always wanted a toyota and this was my 1st experience. Love all features except the 4WD feature auto turns off once you hit 25 mph. Biggest concern is paint chipping off the hood. Looks like air bubbles that have popped. 1st noticed within 30 days brought back to dealer and all they said was go to a body shop not their problem. Never had this with any other vehicle I have owned. The pain on bumper is fine but now their are pinholes showing rust all over the hood and chips the size of pencil tops . Car has less than 40K miles on it and is rarely driven on dirt/gravel roads. Who can i contact to address this issue, it is obviously a mfg defect.

I love my RAV4. Comfortable to drive on long trips, loads of room, 45,000 miles and no problems. This is my 2nd RAV4. First one was a 1999,loved it too. When it came time for a new vehicle, I got the new car bug, couldn't wait to buy the newer model, 2007, much quieter ride and larger. Plenty of room for the kids.

Bad Trans/Differential

These SUVs develop an annoying differential whine at about 40 MPH and up. There is a Service Bulletin #TSB- 0192-10 that addresses the problem. Problem is it simply tries to cover up the problem by dampening the noise - hoping the owner will go away. Also the engine has to be pulled to simply replace a water pump. The Service manual also states that the engine needs to be removed for spark plug replacement. It could really get expensive to own this vehicle for the long term.

Juzt bought a used rav4 2007 @ 37,000 paying about 18,000 for it and at 4th day literally it did not want to start for me as I left my night job. Did the same thing in the morning and I'm not sure what to do. Love the look and the way it drives but I'm not a hard core driver and do not travel anywhere far. Did I get jipped and bought a lemon or should I continue to give this car a try.

Transmission Whine 40-60 MPH

Transmission developed an irritating whine from 40 to 60 mph. This problem seems to be wide spread and Toyota does not seem to be addressing it. The whine definitely overshadows the good points of the SUV. Just another instance of Toyota stonewalling buyers.

RAV4 has good features but the engine whine noise starting at 40 mph detracts from all of the positive features. Of course the service department has indicated that there is no technical notice from Toyota regarding this problem. I prefer the quality of our 1994 Highlander.

RAV4 Great! until water pump problem

The RAV4 is exceptional in handling and driving, I love it! CAUTION: One major downfall, I have to replace the water pump. Well in order to have the water pump replaced the engine has to be taken out, 14.5 hours of labor! The service guy quoted 14.5 hours labor! That totally crushed my opinion about the RAV4, it's bad for the engineers/designer to place the water pump where the engine has to be removed to replace a simple device such as the water pump.

Beware of the RAV4

Problems: Water pump, head gasket blew because we did not replace water pump fast enough and engine has aluminum which warps in high temp. Transmission gasket replaced. Alternator replaced. Clicking in steering wheel. Luckily my brother-in-law is a mechanic saved us $1000's but we have still dumped about $3000 into fixing this car because I drove too much (ALL HWY driving) and nothing went wrong until after warranty expired. Glad I am not the only one with a LEMON RAV4, but sad at Toyota's lack of quality. 1st Toyota and probably last due to this money pit. At 109,000 miles and going to dump it and take my losses.

My Rav 4 has 67000 miles and needs a new short block. The car is using too much oil. Estimated cost of repair is over $5000.00. In addition, the the light on the HV/AC controls need to be replaced. While under warranty we had to have the steering shaft and water pump replaced. I have had great experience with Toyota's in the past. But, this is not acceptable.

I wish I knew now, what I had no way of knowing when I bought this car. The V6 engine is very peppy, the car handles well, and is terrific on snow covered roads. I really like the way it looks and drives. However, I was not prepared to pay $1800 ($171 for parts)to replaced a water pump. My wife drives this car to work everyday, approximately 100 miles round trip. That comes out o 95% highway driving. If I had known the cost involved for this repair, I would have never bought the V6. At the time I bought it, it was the highest rated SUV according to Consumer Reports. Live and learn.

When I say I test drove everything, I mean EVERYTHING. I have had my RAV4 for 3 years now and plan to drive it until the wheels fall off!. Great performance, the V6 does not mess around when you are trying to enter the freeway. I commute 60 miles a day. Did great in the Ohio Snow this year. The tire "sensor" went out a month ago. Haven't had that replaced yet. I always get compliments about how shiny and clean it looks. I swaer it's the paint. Always looks great. You would not believe what I have hauled in this RAV4. A 60" kitchen base cabinet and 6 foot counter top, twin mattress and box springs- it's great.

The original set of Yokahama tires wore out around 32,000, and were replaced with a better set of tires. I had the steering knock issue, and Toyota was aware of the problem, and fixed it at no cost to me. Also a oil hose was fixed at no cost even though the warranty had expired. The RAV4 is one of the best vehicles I've ever owned.

Follow up to my 10/21/08 review. Hesitation while accelerating is still there, just had to get used to it. Sometimes still annoying when you need to give it some gas, the vehicle doesn't move right away. I'm not convinced it's torque steer. I'm back to premium gas to see if helps, not it. Still don't think it's the trans. Dealer says it's, "manufacturer computer programmed". I guess it's better than it accelerating by itself. Look for VVT-I Oil Hose Replacement recall. Enter VIN on Toyota website to find out about yours. All in all, it still drives well, though. The styling hasn't changed much on the RAV4s, so I feel it was a good choice made then. Recently got asked if it was 2009 or 2010.

Missing my RAV4

In 2008, we needed to refresh our cars. I always like the look of the 2008 CR-V so I bought one. My wife really love it so she claimed it. Well, I was jealous but didn't want 2 CR-V on the driveway so I bought a 2007 RAV-4 instead. I must say, I love driving the RAV-4 better, I find it more solid, reliable and fun to drive. I didn't notice the difference in gas mileage between our 4 cyl CR-V to our V6 RAV-4. Recently we moved to a high-end neighborhood where everyone drives BMW, Lexus, MB, so we decided to get rid of both vehicles and buy me a RX350 and my wife a GX470. The only reason I am here is to vent how much I miss my RAV-4 with its "fun" qualities. OH the V6 POWER!

after 3 years, a few problems

Generally a quality, functional vehicle. Quick acceleration, good visibility. Experienced problem with wheel speed sensors (check engine, VSD, 4WD lights came on) so no cruise control and rough engine were the result. $800 repair which was difficult for dealership to solve and very annoying. Tires wear quickly but have good grip on dry and wet roads. Adequate on snow.

Almost up to 36,0000 miles. I took it to the dealer since I had the thunking in the steering column. They are fixing under warranty. They noticed the water pump was leaking and fixing under warranty as well. The front brakes needed replacement too. The tires are showing their wear and need to be replaced, these were the Geolander OEM. So all that being said, I would buy again. Love the handling and I feel safe in it.

I love driving my Limited RAV4 6 cyl 4x4. It has very good acceleration. The brakes could be better as it should stop quicker than it does. It rides smooth for an SUV. It is very reliable. After driving this fun miniSUV on long trips for 3 years, it only gave me a problem once. The dealer had to replace the steering box after off road trips and it started making a soft thunking sound when the wheel is turned all the way to the left (but it was still driving well). Warranty replacement of course. I would buy another RAV4 after this one gets to be too old.

Drove a new 2010 RAV and decided to save $$$ and buy used since there was no difference in looks. My 2007 RAV (12k miles) like many others had a noise/clicking in the steering wheel when turning. After research I found out about the intermediate steering shaft for which Toyota issued a TSB. Since mine still had the factory warranty (also bought it certified) I took it back to the dealer and it was repaired in a few hours, no questions asked. I signed for the warranty and saw it was 516.00. The car is now 100% to my liking and I enjoy it more every day in every way. Love it - can't go wrong!

Disappointed in Rav4 dependability

I have owned several other Toyotas and I liked them for their dependability. I purchased a 2007 Rav4 for that reason and have been greatly disappointed. The brakes went out at 17,000 miles; an oil hose broke at 23,000; the tires wore out at 20,000 and had to be replaced; the paint job is chipping; the exterior is made of fiberglass and is easily damaged; the power steering column is failing and will have to be replaced at 23,000 miles. What a disappointment. Toyota fails to warranty any of these defects or make a recall for potentially dangerous ones. I have had this vehicle a little more than two years and it has proved to be an expensive liability. I will not purchase another Toyota.

Steering Shaft and Rack Problems

I loved this car, until I hit about 50,000 miles, then I noticed a knock in the steering, Total cost of repair on the vehicle will be close to $3000.00. Needs steering shaft and rack. Over 36,000 miles this is not covered and I just turned 52,000. I took it to the dealership complaining of an occasional knock at 20,000 and then again at 30,000 and they could find nothing wrong; they told me to get an alignment, this made it a little better but know it is highly annoying to drive the vehicle. There is a Tech bulletin out there for this problem, too bad they don't recall these parts. With the bad publicity you would think they would rectify this problem. I am not sure I would get another Toyota.

This is actually my wife's car. I drive it about once or twice a week. The car now has 55K miles and the problems, or complaints that I want to mention are the lack of power when the AC is on, and the knocking that comes from the steering column linkage. The power is expected because it's a 4 cylinder. The linkage problem is a flaw that has received a technical notice, but no recall. Very frustrating that Toyota won't recall this and fix a potentially dangerous problem. Otherwise, a very good car and excellent for your wife to use for work or kid hauling.

Poor Toyota quality and service

I experienced a windshield tick soon as I purchased the vehicle. Toyota service attempted a fix and it got worse. The tick was intermittent and after several trips to the dealer, and test drives, the dealer resealed the windscreen. The problem resurfaced recently. The dealers are unable to diagnose and fix it. My 36,000 mile warranty is expiring. There is also a rattle around the dash on the passenger side. Toyota is unable to diagnose that problem as well. I occasionally hear other noises and vibrations as well in the interior from the sun roof area and around the passenger door. Toyota replaced defective sun visors, and the glove compartments. The radio display mysteriously would go blank.

Be careful with the spare tire cover

We got our RAV4 in 7/2007 and since then we haven't have any problem at all. There are two areas where the 2007 design failed: 1) The rear bumper upper part is too exposed to scratches during loading/unloading. 3) At winter ice forms between the spare tire and the rear bumper. That ice eventually tends to damage the rear bumper. 2) the spare tire cover was removed during a car wash and totally ruined. Someone mentioned that TOYOTA said only they know of one case... that is simply not true, it is pretty common and a big design flaw. After 2007 they changed the design of the car cover.

Engine Whine

Our Rav4 problem is that the engine(6cyl) starts to whine at 40mph and continues at higher speeds although it is somewhat less obvious due to wind and road noise. I have never seen a review where an owner is concerned about this problem. Dealer says no technical notes from Toyota. Looks like we dump the car.

Little Maintenance?

Bought this new in 2007. It has 36,000 on it now. At 26K had to replace all 4 tires. They are 17" tires ($$$) and the dealer wanted us to pay 800 dollars to get it inspected. I bought them at a tire place for half. They said it was normal on Rav 4's that the stock tire wears out by 25K miles. The 30K maintenance cost us almost 400 dollars and I'm not really sure why. I get carsick in it if I'm not driving, same thing with my wife. My kid gets carsick on long trips as well. At 36,000 miles the check engine light came on accompanied by a light that said VSC and the 4X4 light too. Took it in and had to replace the coil. Paid 109 dollars for diagnosis. Also hard to tell if 4WD is on or not.

Watch out for the VVTi oil line

Coming soon to a recall near you: the external VVTi rubber hose of the 3.5L engine fails spraying quarts of oil all throughout the engine compartment. This is a very common problem in Toyota's 3.5L lineup and potentially affects Avalon, Camry, and Rav4. Engine seizures are a possibility. Toyota has redesigned this rubber hose as a steel hose for 2009 models but hasn't done much of anything for current 2006, 2007, and 2008 owners. This line broke at 45,000 miles for me. For other owners, it broke outside of the power train warranty. Many Rav4s have needed short block replacement due to this defect.

Great Suv

This SUV is nimble and quick. It is still fun to drive after 2 years and 30K miles! The gas mileage - even for the V6 - is great, usually 22-23 mpg in mixed driving and 27-28 hwy. Acceleration literally blows anything else off the road and almost stops on a dime. It handles like it's on tracks. I have not had any mechanical issues with the vehicle. The one thing it needs, however, is a mounting bracket for the front license plate. In a 2- plate state like this one, that can be a problem.
