I have had many problems....como. problems with this cars, recalls and minor stupid issues that should not happen at this mileage. Something about the pic valve makes your car idle rough and you must keep replacing it. The ignition coils always go out. Also biggest issue with this car is the timing belt. And not the timing belt itself, it's components. They all mess up so you must make preventive maintenance!?!? Your car can be running fine, then all of a sudden lock up your engine. This is a main problem. Sadly my friend warned me about it and then said "I told you so" to my $5000 sudden expense. [non-permissible content removed] Passat. Only few models are worth it for vw.

I'm purchased a few VW now but I think this is the final one. My first car was a VW so there is a bit of nostalgia, but it's gone on long enough. So I purchased this vehicle used two years ago. It's a 2006 Passat 3.6 4Motion. The acceleration, driving, etc is quite good... but the reliability and built in flaws of the car make it worthless. Specifically, when I purchased it a few weeks later one of the shocks sheared off and I had to replace that. Then, a week ago several things occurred at once and it's mind numbingly bad. I'll list the issues and the associated prices so you can gasp with me: 1. Headlights. These are HID, so they should be pricey. However, VW can't figure out how to design product, so they literally blocked one of the headlight entry ports with the windshield wiper fluid case. YOU CAN'T CHANGE THE HEADLIGHT WITHOUT REMOVING THE BUMPER. This is a thing. I'm not lying. Somebody literally built a car and blocked the headlights so you can't change them without taking the bumper off. Cost to change headlights? $800. That's not a joke, it's $800 to change the headlights. Not even the highbeams. Just the stinking low beams. $800. 2. The trunk logo is inset... and when water gets in the inset it causes it to rust out. So I have a huge rust tramp stamp on the back of my VW because the engineer decided that having an inset logo with a well for water to sit in made sense. Price: Whatever a used trunk goes for since it'll be more expensive to have the entire thing sanded. At least $600+ 3. Some random pipe broke in the engine when the headlights went out: $400 4. Super duper awesome fuel pump: $1,200+ What the what? In a world where replacing headlights and a fuel pump costs $2k... yeah, stay away from VW. The first Passat I had years ago had issues, this one has issues, and the engineering is just ridiculous. Next week I'll find out that they glued the tires to the wheels for some crazy reason and I have to replace the entire wheel when a tire goes flat. Derp.

Loved the car until it hit 40K. Thank God I purchased extended warranty. two A/C compressors, one ABS module, alternator, (each of these cost at least $1200), fan motor, trunk latch, catalytic converter, part for Turbo, interior lock buttons peeled, arm rests peeled (VW would not do anything about this) No excuse for any of this. I'm used to Asian cars, never had these problems with them! Had car towed twice, once for alternator and most recently for ignition part. That did it. I traded for a new 2015 Mazda6 last March. What a great car! Styling, mileage, quality, reliability. I don't understand why people make excuses for poor reliability with some brands like VW. I won't put up with it. Just read reviews. The top cars for reliability are Lexus, Mazda, Toyota, and Honda. Don't see any VW's up there do you? No excuse for poor reliability, I learned my lesson.

We bought the car from my brother-in-law who bought it new and did regular maintenance like clockwork only used synthetic oil. It had 90k miles on it when we bought and was in immaculate condition besides the peeling on inside front doors. We drove 150 miles and lost oil pressure had to be towed 150 miles from home. Dealer said needed new motor $7500 and that didn't include turbo replacement. We went with an autorepair shop instead and spent 5500. Within the next 150 miles the oil was leaking. Turned out to be rear main seal and that is another 1200. We have 15k in a used car with only 90k miles on it.......Ridiculous. VW should do something about all the problems. This should be covered under lemon law.

I purchased my 2006 VW Passat 2.0T for about $25K from the dealership. It now has106k miles. The scheduled maintenance was always done on time, including the pricey synthetic oil changes every 3k miles. After taking the necessary actions to have the car regularly serviced(in hopes of having the car last) At 85K miles I needed to replace the front axel. ($1200) At 100K miles my car started shifting funny. I brought it to the dealership to take a look. I was told I needed to replace the transmission. They quoted me $6000. After this shocking quote I brought the car to a reputable transmission shop. I was told the same thing, I needed a new transmission. This quote was less at $4.5K. Thats right, with 106k miles I needed to replace the transmission! In my opinion a transmission should not need to be replaced with 100K miles. The black rubber coating on the buttons is pealing, the sunroof is leaking, and the engine is misfiring. I would highly suggest to anyone looking to purchase a VW not to. They are stylish and affordable but the cars do not last.

This car is great mine is at 160 k miles the inside of my buttons and locks buttons did peel and bubble but its only a 50$ fix... People complain about the up keep costing so much but ITS A VOLKSWAGEN! It is not an american car repairs cost more the engine is not regular its all new technology if you cant afford up keep you shouldnt buy a foreign car. This is NOT a Toyota Camry or Honda Accord. It is INFINITELY better. Things people forget, however, is that with performance comes a lack of "reliability." Don't read reviews about how people have a lot of problems. This is not a problematic car. It is a car that uses performance parts that needs to be watched and maintained. Mine was big money to keep running, but worth every penny. It drove like a sports car, carried a family like an elite sedan, and looked more expensive than it was. It never had an issue that disabled it, and it never had an issue that wasn't to be expected with the high mileage it had. This car costs about $1500 a year to keep up with repairs and maintenance. Beware, and enjoy.

I bought my 2006 Passat with the V6 engine and it has been the best car I have ever owned. I had leased a Passat before with the 2.0 Turbo and my wife and I loved the roominess and easy ride. This Passat has a sports suspension (VW stiffened it up due to complaints about a "squishier" ride in older models) that she really disliked but appealed to my love of sports cars going back to the 60's. The V6 engine has been a blast, all the power I needed in tight situations and it doesn't burn oil like it's Audi cousins. I just turned 100,000 miles on it and it is not only running strong but it averages 28 miles per gallon. I figured I would lose the mileage due to the larger engine but it sips gas even when I drive it hard. My only complaint is the breakdown of the headlight covers as they fog over time and some of the rubbery surfacing on the driver's side armrest and sections of the dashboard show wear with chips and peeling. The lines on the car and interior are dated now but still cool in a guy sort of way with a black exterior and interior. If you can find one with the V6 engine grab it and take it on a mountain road to fell teh power and cornering ability. sweet ride!

Air Conditioning went out 3rd year, window washer fluid pump went out the same year. Check engine light stays on all the time. The inside interior is PEELING... really? all buttons are worn off, the lock buttons are bubbling and peeling, even the ones in the back seat where no one hardly sits. Starting to rust. Bought brand new off the show room floor with 16 miles on it. NEVER buying VW again.

Love to drive it, bought it used at 96-K but within a month of purchase the transmission slipped and caught a hard lurching clunk when shifting,3rd and 4th gears. Then after about a week of hoping it was a glitch, the transmission got stuck in 3rd gear permanently.... Luckily it was under the warranty but the insurance company only allowed a used transmission with equal or lesser mileage. I have been driving it for about 3 months since the rebuild, and a week ago it did the "Clunk" when shifting from 1st - 2nd gear and since then has happened a couple of other times. I love driving the car otherwise and it looks sexy as hell especially when you put some wider rims/ tires on it. L

I got the car second-hand when it had about 20,000 miles on it and now it has already 160K miles. Awesome car. The previous owner did a great job maintaining it, so I had no problems at all with this car, except regular maintenance. It is a great car. Very fun to drive and looks great. Actually I think it looks better than the current generation of Passat. German engineering is super and trustable. Only thing one must remember is to use only premium gas (91 or above). I can see some people got problems with the car mainly because they were cheap enough to use 87 gas for the car. If you do that, you will end up with many problems. I have been using 93 gas and got no problem at all.

I bought this 2.0T Passat in 2006 and have been driving it since then. Now it has about 100K miles on it. Great car. Never had any major issues with it. The handling is much better than some competitors in its class. My wife and I both like the look very much. So classic. I was surprised to see many negative reviews here, but I do understand normally only people who had trouble would spend time writing reviews. So I wanted to tell a little the other side of story.

This car has problems left and right. I bought it used from a dealership about 3 years ago. The transmission has been going bad for about a year now. I'm surprised it has lasted that long driving with a bad tranny. The bad tranny makes it constantly slip and clunk. It slips in between every single gear change and sometimes even slips when it isn't changing gears! Tried replacing the valve body and that did not help at all. It's completely unreliable and the worst car I've ever owned. I expected so much more from a VW. Now, the fuel pump has broken so it doesn't start. Save your time and money and do not buy this year Passat.

Leased the car brand new in the Fall of 2005. Yea, they used 2005 parts in this piece of junk 2006 VW Passat. The 2005 had more recalls though, FUNNY THING! I've had nothing but problems since 31,000 miles. Parts breaking left and right. The hubs were toast at 60,000 miles. Really? I mean rusted through. The interior started to deteriorate at 20,000 miles and it was out of warranty by then because of the year. RUST began to show on the outside of the car at 40,000. The engine repeatedly seized in the winter time as early as 40,000 miles. In Europe they recalled this same vehicle for many many more issues than the US did and they were all built from the SAME PARTS! Yea, pretty sad.

expected more when purchasing new 2006 Passat, previous car was the new beetle and a friend had the 2001 Passat, when changes were made that must have cut costs with interior design and electrical system. Within 2 years, the AC failed, front headlights, interior lights and service buttons were always on. Also, after two summers of heat the ac controls, stereo buttons and auto windows had blistering and then peeling. Looks like a pos! Still drives fair considering the electrical system is out of whack. Last time I will buy new - over rated, definitely last time buying VW. Best car ever was Lexxus. **Note: the guy still driving his 2001 with 185,000 miles plus. Buy new VW & good luck.

Where do I even start. First off, DO NOT buy this car. I had this vehicle for almost five years and it is indescribable the feeling I had when I got rid of it. Never will I stray from Honda or Toyota again. There is a reason there are so many Hondas on the road and very few VWs. I learned the hard way. This car consistently broke down and needed repairs. Not cheaper, either. The air compressor went out twice, cold air return motor died, and numerous recalls. I honestly still can't believe a car could be so bad. On the bright side, I tell anyone who will listen how awful my experience with VW was. I have convinced at least 30+ people to never buy a VW with my previous experience.

This vehicle while is fun to drive has spent more time with the mechanic than with us. 5 trips to fix the injectors, 4 trips the second time they went in only 140Km. I can't believe 2 sets of injectors in only 140Km. All 4 wheel bearings failed before 80Km, AC failed, trunk release failed, and on and on. The dealer would try something and when surprise it wasn't fixed told us to book another appointment, great except we live 5 hours from the nearest dealer, in one case it took 4 trips to fix one little problem. NO support from the VW dealer so we phoned VW Canada and all I got was "that's the way our warrenty works" I guess that means tough luck consumer. Stay away from this vehicle.

I own a 2006 passat sedan, the first year of owning the car my catalytic coverter went out. From that point each year a major componet on the vehicle goes out. Now I keep getting check engine light, the oil has to be replaced often and the cost to repair vehicle continues to rise. Now I have a camsgaft issue that is causing the regulator to leak. This is by far the worst vehicle I have ever owned. I tell everyone I know and don't via reviews to stop buying vw vehicles. They don't stand by their product. Its pure garbage, since owning the vehicle I have spent approx. 7500 in repairs. Please don't be fooled into buying this product. Its DAMAGED and UNTRUST WORTHY!!!!!!!

I own a 2006 Passat 2.0 T with 62K. This is the worst car I ever owned in my 50 years. The positive about a car is cool exterior look. The interior is falling apart. The drawers are stuck, paint is peeling off, other plastic parts have broken hinges. The engine is losing oil. I have to do oil change every 2,500 miles to keep dipstick inside the range. The wheel bearngs were replaced for both rear wheels. Air conditioner compressor died and AC didn't work for 2 years. The compressor for this car is the most expensive, due to high demand. VW of America are useless. Many Technical service Bulletins were issued, admitting the design flaws, but not granting financial aid. Stay away.

Since early 2007, I have had the catyletic converter split, front and read brakes replaced, steering column replaced and put on sideways...had to take it back to the dealer. Front axle, compressor, 12 tires...its awful in the snow and ice. Satellite radio died, peeling on the arms and buttons, leak in the sunroof, terrible heating/cooling system...takes forever to heat up. Electrically system messed up and when I try and open the window, it closes, then opens. Numerous other things wrong with it. In just the past 6 months I've sunk $8000 into the car. The only thing I like is the way it handles on the open road. Im so disappointed with this car and will never buy a VW again.

Bought this car new. Issues began appearing within 6 months (steering column replacement, oil disappearing with no leaks, peeling buttons, arm rests, emissions problems still, etc...). Have never experienced so many issues with a new $25,000 vehicle. Will never purchase a VW again. VW should be ashamed. Search the forums for issues on this car before you buy!!!

Brought car in for fuel pump recall/warranty. It was running rough and finally the oil pressure light came on. Had car immediately towed to dealership. Told that the engine with 80K miles is ruined due to lack of oil. Car always had plenty of oil, but apparently the pressure was just low enough to damage engine even though the warning light never triggered before this episode. So a 2006 with 80K miles is toast. Worst car experience we have ever had and we will never buy/lease a VW again. Terrible reliability.

My 2006 Passat was my dream car in 2006, 40k miles later the engine light came on. $5,000.00 USD later it is still on. I take it to the dealer as required they change a part here and a part there, bill me lots of $$ and 1 to 2 days later the light is on again. I've had it, I will write to VW the dealer owners and anyone else that might be able to assist in fixing the problem.

I've read a lot of reviews before I purchased my vehicle. Noticed that there were lots of issues with the 2006 VW. drove a lot of different cars including a new fusion, and several Japanese cars. I've never driven a 2.0T but typically large cars with an undersized engine and a turbo to help compensate don't do well (repair wise) Have owned my 3.6 for a year now (it's a 5 year old 2006) and it's running spectacular! Nothing but regular maintenance needed. You have to remember that this is nearly a 3k pound car. a 2.0T will not work long term with sporty driving, but if you choose a 3.6 it's an excellent commuter and very fun on the weekends without much time in the shop.

This car has always had some minor problems, nothing major, but most annoying. However, now that I have 50k miles, more seems to be malfunctioning. A few weeks ago the engine light came on which turned out to be a malfunctioning turbo charger recirculating valve, total cost $303.59. Now the entire headliner is falling down. The dealer said the glue failed. They estimated the replacement to be $800! I'll look elsewhere, thank you. Bottom Line: This was my 'first' and 'last' Volkswagen. Needless to say, I would not recommend this car to anyone.

I've owned the car now for about 4 months. It's an ok driving car, I find there is a bit of a turbo lag. I have had the battery go dead after driving home from work one day, and the in dash CD player doesn't work, the screen reads "CDC Hardware Error" This is unbeleivable as I had a aftermarket CD player in my older car and never gave me any problems. I just find there is no WOW factor with this car. I am nervous after reading all the bad reviews about the fuel pump and other electrical issues. The steering wheel lock module was a recalled item by VW, so mine was fixed. Overall I think someday soon I will trade it and get something more age approprite for a 26 year old. Maybe a Mustang.

Please do your self a favor...RUN don"t walk away from owning a VW especially a 2006 Passat 2.ol. VW doesn't back up their product. There is clearly a design problem with a this year and this model"s engine which ultimately results in your need to replace the engine!! In the 40K plus area the cars begins to burn oil, there is a problem with the cam shaft and high pressure fuel pump. VW puts a bandaid extended warranty that is designed to do nothing. It is carefully worded to protect VW and not the unsuspecting buyer.

that cost more than the kids do. june 4, 2010 i fell in love, 3 months later i realized my mistake. the reason reason being my engine was burning to much oil so it had to be replaced and the a/c compressor went. today june 13 2011 my car is in the shop because i smell burning oil AGAIN. I hate this car! I am currently selling it "AS IS". I have spent over $5K in the last 2 years that I have owned it. I like the way it looks and that is it! This car has been nothing but problems!!! The Check engine lights is always on. As soon as it gets out of the shop, it goes right back in for something completely different. There are no "cheap" repairs on this car. Nobody but a VW repair shop can work on them, and then they charge an arm and leg! If you live in a small town, it impossible to find someone who even knows how to change the oil properly. I bought this car straight from the dealer. This is a one owner car. Because of all the problems, I was tempted to sell. Bought a CPO 06 20k mile VW passat that is a piece of crap & literally had everything replaced within 6 months - a few of them within 3 DAYS of purchasing the car. From entire AC system to radio to ignition module to steering column, instrument cluster to heater, gas tank dropped & replaced, fuel injectors I believe, coil packs, fuel lines, radiator leaking, water pump, driver door handle because it stopped working & had to crawl in passenger side!! Driver door striker as well on a different occasion, almost all suspension parts, rear struts, the list goes on and on.... Those are just off the top of my head but almost every moving engine part, suspension, & electrical item was replaced, yet

I bought this vehicle in Germany over a year ago. In the past year I had over 2600 dollars in repairs. Not routine maintenance, but repairs. It ate oil....there was never a leak, but the oil would disapear. The maintenance lights would appear magically after repairs were completed. I purchased the VAG COM diagnostic program to stem the cost of the regular repairs which were required for safe operation of this money pit. I was throughly disappointed that I sold my 06 Ford Focus. But I was able to unload this clunker to purchase a 2011 Chevy Equinox. I will never buy a foreign car again!

I also have had most thing replaced on my car. a/c, wipermotor, turbor, sensors are being changed all the time fuel pressure, and other things, timing belt as suggested 2 months ago now its in for a motor problem possible cam chain broke or tenioner they keep changing their mind on whats the problem..and the exterior is rusting in odd places such as the middle of the doors.

I bought this car in 2008 with 17,000 miles on it. Now it has 40,000 on it and it's been in the shop 3 times. The first time it went in the exhaust pipe ripped right out of the turbo and it sounded like a diesel truck. The next morning after I got it back I put my A/C on and it didn't work,so back to the dealer I went. They had to replace the whole compressor and flush the system. Two months after that it started to make a growling noise when I hit the throttle hard to pass, guess what I took it back and they said it was the cam shaft. I got it back last week and tonight I went to pick my daughter up from day care put the key in and tried to start it up and the engine is locked up.(JUNK)

Owned 3.6L since new. 40k miles and a great car. Never stranded, no major issues. Get amazing MPG on the highway; e.g SF to Tahoe - avg 28 to 30 MPG City 16 to 18 depending on driving style. Solid NO rattles! Remember this was German built. Capacity! Folding rear seats can fit 7ft plus items. Rear facing child seat & still leg room in the front. No issues in a year or more. Park sensor beep in rain issue was fixed now no issues. Comp update – hesitating acceleration gone. Performance, handling, features, quality unmatched. More HP & Torque than BMW 330, can take it any. Styling has held well, granted not as great as a BMW but sacrifice a little vanity for HP, room, cup holders, features.

When I bought this car I totally loved it. I drives great and was fun to drive. I never noticed until I went to sell it and got the vehicle service history printed out that I took it in 14 times for non-standard maintenence in 4.5 years. This is ridiculous. As soon as the warranty ran out, then I had to start paying for repairs out of pocket. Sooo disappointing. I would have loved to have kept this car, but the unreliability is so huge. I've previously owned another VW before this that had some problems. I will never buy another VW. Again, the reliability is terrible. I think VW should pay me back for the 3 visits to dealer in one month alone that cost nealy $3500.

Terrible experience. First VW in my family and never again. Under warranty: the window motor in the passenger door breaks within a day after repair (5x "repaired"), the A/C went out after only a year and while I was finishing up the work week (in the summer, of course) and driving with the windows down/ sunroof open, the sunroof decided not to close. Lock/Unlock buttons peeling. Window shade lights (next to mirror) went out within months. Right after the warranty ran out, the entire control board and steering column went out (car wouldn't start): over $1000. Cruise control broke. And now the engine has blown: $7500 plus tax/fees to repair. Too expensive to repair!!

That's why I keep buying VWs! My nearest Volkswagen service department is 120 miles from where I live. I've only take the car in for its scheduled maintenance. The VR6 is very powerful and helps to make this car a blast to drive. The Dynaudio sound system is the very best I've heard in any vehicle. This car is proof once again that the finest automobiles in the world are engineered just an on-ramp away from the Autobahn. From day one this car caused problems. I almost backed into a wall a month after owning the car - the brakes failed. I was told it was an air bubble in the brake line. Brake rotors changed, pads changed, and eventually problem went away. Gas cap light came on from the day the car was purchased. It was not until the car had over 50,000 km on it that they found that the gas tank had a leak. Bearings went on the car just over 50,000 km. Stereo CD player had to be changed out. For a high end vehicle the car had too many issues and spent a lot of time in the shop for repairs. This was my fourth VW and my last.

I bought a 2006 VW 2.0t passat, with 48,000 miles in may of 2009. This car is a piece of junk. Thank goodness I had a certified pre-owned warranty on it, good until 75,000.2 months after buying this, a transmission valve (I think that what it's called. Not much of a car expert.) broke. Repair costs totaled $1400.00, which I didn't have to pay b/c of the warranty. 5 months later, the check engine light came on. VW told me that my gas cap wasn't on tight enough. I took it to the dealer, $2200.00 worth of stuff wrong. Once again, all covered under warranty, thankfully. Last week, had to have the car towed from work. Engine gasket broke and pcv valve bad. $500.00. Trading it in tomorrow.

I bought mine used, 2 weeks after buying it I had to replace both front cv boots $1k a piece. in the last 18 months I have had it in the shop at least 12 times. In the last 4 weeks I have had the passenger side electrical, all 4 steering mech, wiper arms, thermostat replaced. Also have a sunroof that likes to open when not prompted. The park brake likes to set and unset itself after I turn the car off. What a joy it has been to drive every rental car known to man while waiting for parts. Thing is every time I get it back I am happy to be sitting in the comfortable ergo friendly car that drives like a dream.... when its running. Don't buy unless you have lots of time/$ to sit at the mech

I've owned Jettas before, but this Passat is pure junk. It's been in the dealership more than with me. Replaced Throttle Valve Control, Crankcase Breather Valve, CV Joint Boot, Catalytic Converter, Compressor Condenser, the list goes own! It also has intermittent noise when accelerating (but only I can hear it). Bought extended warranty-at present I've spent $400 this year already in deductibles.

First the AC busted a hole in itself then all interior parts bubbled and peeled off within a year, then my cam system blew they replaced that, then my shifting cables broke, sun visors don't work and fall out of the holes that hold them up, all buttons had to be replaced, consistent alignment problems, consistent gas cap issues, consistent check engine light, fuel pump replaced, vacuum seals and all that kind of stuff replaced, now warranty is over and I'm stuck with only one year payments left with a piece of crap that is fun to drive that I have to trade in when all i wanted was a car that would last 100k miles, I've got 58k and Im DONE.

I agree with the majority of other reviews. There are a few good points (mileage, fun to drive, roominess) but it stops there. This vehicle is junk. I have experienced many of the issues mentioned, as well as catalytic converter self destructing at 81k miles. I owed a Scirocco 25 years ago. Same deal - fun to drive but unrelenting issues. Swore at the time, no more VWs. The wife talked me into this, but never, never again.

This was the worst car my family has owned. The car had numerous problems. The first was one of the xenon headlamps went bad about a week after we bought the car. The second was the windshield wipers wouldn't come on in the rain and the local VW dealership couldn't fix the problem. One of the turn signal lights popped off the car for no reason and had to be rigged to stay in place. The CV boots went bad after about 2 years. There was loud road noise if you didn't have the radio on. The speakers broke also. Problems with the parking brake. The interior lights started coming and the seat had to be removed and it cost 500 bucks.

2006 3.6L Passat loaded. Passenger side Xenon headlights gone out for the second time. Can you believe a $ 460.00 repair. Incredible! Bumper needs removal to replace bulb. This car has only 17K miles on it. Thank god it was under warranty but I'm worried when the warranty ends. Other than this problem, love this car. Dealership has been great with any repairs since its under warranty.

This car has been pretty great. The engine and driving performance are the kicker for me. Down shift with the steering wheel padles and you're gone. Dynaudio radio is awesome. Great options, seat memory function, parking sensors, turning headlights and side lights for cornering are great. Fit and finish inside could be tighter, in most new VWs I sit in at the dealer they seem to have a tighter interior. The AC is a little weak, and the NAV system is kinda hard to use quickly. I had a few issues with the transmission that were fixed by the dealer under warranty, but nothing major. Got 42K on it now and I'm only upset cuz they don't offer the 3.6 in the Passat anymore.

This is my second Passat, at the end of the lease now. I loved my 2002 B5. This, however, is not a B5. I enjoyed this car, but had some problems with it. The electronic parking brake has been repaired 2x now and still glitchy. It actually disengaged itself and rolled across a parking lot once! AC compressor had to be replaced and the AC is anemic anyway. The film on the dash bubbled up in the sun. In its favor: the car is just a blast to drive. I have the 6 speed, and it's a hoot. The automatic was anemic compared to the 6 speed. The sensation of a big car moving like a little roadster is comical, enjoyable and uniquely entertaining.

Number One Nightmare

This is the worst car I have ever owned. It is my second Passst. Drove a '99 for 160K miles. It has been one tragedy after another. It has been one major fubar after another. Between electrical component failures, to bad electronic ignitions and keys to having both the engine and transmission go out at 81,000 miles. Volkswagen of America had the audacity to offer me a $1000 rebate on a purchase of my next VW. I am so frustrated I don't know what to do. I have kept up on the service, why not since its been in the shop so often. You will not see me even coming close to a VW lot for the rest of my life.

I was looking for the car with a good performance, fuel mileage, design, and dependability. And closest car I came upon was this redesigned Passat. I was satisfied with engine performance and fuel mileage but I had to deal with too many quality problems. From water leak, multiple check engine lights (some are due to same issue), noises, and paint peeling. I have filed for lemon law after VW ignored/refused to meet with me. After decided to take the settlement for cash and I traded for another car.

Problems include: Turbo PCV valve failed (at 12 months) Coil packs failed (at 18 months) Drivers elec window failed (numerous times) AC compressor failed (at 2 years) Brake pedal switch failed (causing intermittent complete power loss to engine computer!) Steering column/convenience unit failed (3.5 years) Brakes replaced at 20,000km Paint peeled off drivers door handle Battery failed at 2 years Suspension noisy over bumps I'll never buy another VW, and I've already turned several friends off getting one when I explain the problems I have had. I bought this car used with 70,000 miles on it and so far it's been a joy to drive. As a college student, I enjoy having a unique car because noone my age has the same car as me. My friends are always surprised when they get in my car and find out how comfortable and spacious it is, not to mention how fast this car can go. I do have issues with the check engine light coming on but it goes away. I got the extended warranty so it's not a big deal to me. I've driven many different cars because I used to work at a car rental company and this is one of the best cars in its class. Also a great deal for a used car because of its depreciation. I'm probably buying another VW after this.

Purchased this 06 Model with all the Luxury options available that year. The car had 43k miles but came with a 2yr./24k bumper to bumper warrenty. Included was 90 days Sirius Radio free. This car is out of this world, it's by far the finest automobile I have ever owned. Beautiful to look at from any angle, great interior ergonomics, outstanding performance and my gas mileage for combined driving is in the high 20's. The smile never goes away when I am driving this Passat or just looking at it in my driveway. All this praise and I have only had the car for 5 weeks. I would recommend this Passat be on your check out list when looking for a world class automobile.

My first VW. Purchased a 2006 Certified Passat Lux edition. Fun fast performing car. Mechanically sound, modern styling and dealer service was great, but in just under 2 years, I've had it in the shop about 12 times to fix electrical annoyances. I've owned BMW and Mercedes; for some reason, Germans can't get the electrical right. Also, alot of squeaks in cold weather. Gas mileage is great, but spent too much time at the dealership.

My second Passat...Nice to look at? Yes. Fun to drive? Yes. However, it's as if the car was programmed to self destruct. Have had to replace the turbo cutoff valve, A/C condenser, cam shaft (Yes, the cam shaft!), driver door handle mechanism and trunk latch...all in the last year! Things go wrong with this car that haven't gone wrong with cars in 40 years.

This is my first VW and I am totally hooked. Not only is the dealer first class but the car has been the most reliable I've ever owned. I now have 39,000 miles on it and have not put one dime into it except for tires and oil changes. It still looks as good as the day I bought it and the body is as solid as ever. This is the most unreliable vehicle I have ever owned. The car has been in the shop over 15 times & about 6 months total. WE have spent over $5000 in repairs for this BRAND NEW car. It is worthless and full of problems and recalls. Entire steering column has been replaced twice w/in 14 months; entire radio/cd had to be replaced; air conditioner went out after only 2 years; brakes had to be replaced after 2 years; It is a worthless car and I am scared to death to drive it anywhere because it continuously has Service Now lights on; check engine light; beeping all the time; warning lights; Please do not buy a VW. VW of America does not care about their customers; they have shut us out.

I absolutely love this car! Currently, the car has 57,203 miles on it and I have had ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEMS with this car. It handles like a sports car. It's VERY fast and has more than enough power. The black interior looks like new. The silver exterior is still shinny (even though I don't really clean or wax it). It doesn't get stuck when those wonderful nor'easters hit us here in PA. This car will cruise easily faster than any other car I have ever owned.

So far, I've run into a few issues...some cosmetic, some mechanical. Some of the pwr lock/window buttons were blistering, and the leather on a rear door panel began bubbling. All was covered under manufacturer warranty. The dealership that the vehicle was purchased through misinformed me of the expiration date of the manufacturer warranty and this was during some expensive repairs. If you own a 2006+ Passat, check your spare tire compartment! I found 6 inches of standing water in the compartment! Supposedly this is fairly common. Although the dealer would never admit it. WHEN the cars runs, it's great! Now, I will only buy a new VW for the warranty and service maintenance. NO MORE CPL HASSLE

While the VW Passat 2.0T is great to drive it requires continuous repairs for all major systems. The interior is nice but when you need 2 visors, one drive gear shift, 2 new lumbar supports, a new trunk latch, new window buttons, etc - do I need to say more - the list just gets longer - and the car is only 4 years old, why would you bother? The hassle with the repairs outweighs the fun of the driving. It is unreliable and there is no guarantee that you can get from point A to B. The latest recall is the engine coils, but what about all the other repair and defective parts that aren't being recalled. This car and parts are unreliable -why do you think they decreased the mileage warranty

This has been the most unreliable car I've ever owned. To put in context, I've also owned a '71 Beetle and an '82 Fiat. I have babied this car, looks new, only 22k miles in just under 4 years. Been in to dealer approx 10x. Parking break 2x, steering column replaced, power windows, struts, leaks, recalls, air cond. smells bad, dealer won't fix. It squeaks & rattles like and old pickup. Had to replace tires at 19k miles and as I said, "I baby this". You look at the paint and it scratches. Now for the positives, if you only care about looks and German style, go for it. 3 mths left on lease, Toyota here I come!!

This was our first (and probably last) VW. Loved the car until all the electronic problems started popping up (too numerous to list). The last problem we had was the well-known defective steering column that needed to be replaced (just last week). How does this common problem not warrant a recall? I love driving the car when it is working, but have no faith that the car will last (and it still only has 26k miles on it!). Just waiting for the next problem to arrive. I'll stick with Acuras/Hondas from here on.

Simply the worst reliability of any car I've owned. A full on nightmare! Repairs were always covered under warranty, but if not covered would have cost me over $13K over 3 years. From replacing full AC system, front struts, computer, cat-converter, instrument panel, full injection, Electronics a real problem voltage surges move wipers when turning off car. The painted window switches and passenger door handles scratch and interior shows age. If you buy one you must purchase with a good warranty, but they are almost prohibitively expensive as the word is out. Never will by German or American again. Drove nicely but not worth the headaches! Worst car I've owned, run from this junker!

Since I leased this car I've had the a/c compressor replaced (6 mo. after getting the car), 2 cd players replaced, steering column replaced (which I've read is locking up and causing cars to SHUT OFF while driving, so BE CAREFUL if you're between 55-65k) spark plugs, catalytic converter,and either the fuel injector(s) or coils will be replaced at 55k, once I on my own figure out which is actually faulty. I would 100% not recommend this car to anyone. I was so excited to be getting a passat but after all of this, I will NEVER AGAIN purchase, lease or go anywhere near a vw. My crappy 1996 Hyundai Sonata was more reliable.

I bought this car new and was very excited about its overall interior and exterior design and performance. My excitement quickly faded as the car is always in the shop. This is the worst car I have ever owned. It has been in the shop at least every other month. Several of the repairs lasted over a week to correct and I had to rent a car while the repair was made. It has had so many electrical and computer problems I cannot even count them. You name it, it has been broken. Here is the short list, Braking system, fuel system, Every computer system has been broken (some more than once), steering system, tire pressure monitor. NEVER buy this car.

I've owned my 2.0T for just over 3 years. It has been one of the most satisfying autos I have ever experienced. I've owned Corvettes, BMW's, Porsche's, an Audi, a Cadillac, several Chevy's , a couple of Fords and a few others. I think, I can safely say, this is the best of the lot. It'll travel over 500 Highway miles on a tank of gas. It's more comfortable than a couple of BMW's I've owned. It's fast, it handles pretty well and it's never had to go back to the dealer since I bought over 40,000 miles ago. I've changed the oil (Mobile 1) a few times and recently replaced the original tires. The brake pads still look like new. I bought it new for 22 grand. What a great car. 2 thumbs, way up!

This is my first VW and at the end of 4 years still love the vehicle. It's the most comfortable and fun car I have ever had for highway driving. Seats are very comfortable! Long trips are a breeze. Negatives are the parking sensors in cold or wet weather give you false beeps frequently. Navigation is terrible if you want to find something on a common street like Elm or Main. System lists every Elm St. in all cities within a state and you end up guessing which of the multiple Elms listed is the right one. No way to enter city name to narrow the list. Just hope for a unique street name.

Thank goodness this particular year had a 50,000 warranty or I would have been SOL with most of these repairs. A/C work, window modules, transmission, paint chipping/rusting, coolant system keeps getting "bubbles" causing the coolant to be low when it reads as normal...those are the major things. I have a year left on the lease without the warranty and I am afraid that I will have a lot of cash going out for repairs.

My wife and I test drove the vehicle and made our deal on this used Passat. The Carfax looked clean and required maintenance was accounted for. We signed a drove home. We then took our daughters for a ride and returned the vehicle to the drive. Fifteen minutes later we started the car. Smoke poured from the hood. The car died. Towed to the dealer and fixed. Not an auspicious start. We had it less than 1 hour. At any rate, it was repaired and runs fine. Coil burned out. Other than that debacle I like the vehicle. For now it has to prove itself to be reliable. After that flame out in the driveway that might be hard for this buggy to do. She does fly though with the Turbo!

Very pleased with the overall performance but rumbling noise on certain road surfaces is most disconcerting and appears to cause premature tyre wear. The dealer and his staff knew of the problem when I first approached them but VW will not acknowledge the problem as one which demands some beneficial attention for the customer. They say it is 'a .characteristic of the vehicle' and are not prepared to fix it or offer compensation for the excessive tyre wear. I would love to hear from any other owners who have experienced the problem.

I loved my Passat, but was concerned about reliability when the car was no longer under warranty. (I previously experienced major post warranty repair expense with a 2001 BMW 540) Last week the car died and wouldn't start at a stop light at a busy intersection. I had it towed to a repair shop. The next day the car started and ran fine, with codes showing no problem. The reason for the car not starting problem was unexplainable. Also last week the compressor on the HVAC system died, a $1000 repair. After reading reliability experience of other owners,I was so concerned about the potential for continued problems that I traded for a 2009 Altima and purchased a 100,000 mile extended warranty.

I've owned this car from new and from week one, yes week one, it's been in the shop. After having this car for almost three years now, I can't remember a time when I wasn't making plans in my schedule to take it in. Here's a short list: 3 nav units, satellite replacement, CD changer, airbag sensor, battery, window controller, almost all of the "soft touch" pieces on the interior, ashtray lid, catalytic downpipe assembly, front suspension parts, brake parts,rear trunk springs, fuel sending unit, 2 speakers and I'm sure I forgot a few! This car is worthless! It's value has decreased so fast my head spins, and it's no surprise if you read the reviews. I'm trading it ASAP. I'll never buy VW again!

Got my 06 Passat 3 days after they hit the US dealerships in 2005. After just about 4 years of driving: paint is flawless, V-Tex seats still look new, every single thing on the car works except the XM part of the radio (it went out 3 times and part not made by VW). The car turns heads when I drive it and the young crowd thinks its a hip automobile. Dynaudio 600w sound system is powerful and the extra features like the electronic parking brake and the hill holder are nice touches. I worried about VW reliability when I bought it but really wanted it and I have not been disappointed at all.

It's a question of when and not if with regards to problems you will have with this car. I averaged a trip to the dealership every single month I had the car. Countless hours of my time wasted on getting all sorts of problems fixed. tire wheel bearing, reflash of radio, reflash of software, transmission valve, cam shaft, fuel injectors, spark plug, broken low horn, broken left speaker (non-standard speaker size so no aftermarking without fabrication), peeling of paint on radio, hard down shifting, cracked cv joint and of course, the excessive burning of oil! (well over a quart every 1k miles, was told this was normal! oh come on!) unless you like living at vw dealerships, AVOID!!!

2006 Passat 2.0t

This car has been bullet-proof after almost 60,00 miles, which, I have to admit, is quite a bit different from my previous Passat (1996 GLX). But I bought another one, didn't I? Replaced the wiper motor early on, under warranty. After that, nothing. My only complaint is that the ride has softened. My '96 was a slot car. But, it's still a beautiful design 4 years later and is the best blend of performance and fuel economy I know of in the segment.

Best to stay away from this one. I was a devout VW fan until this car. Had a 2004 VW Jetta that was great. This thing has electronic ghosts such as the emergency brake coming on and off, the gas light comes on with ample gas in the tank, the check engine light....it's been in the shop numerous times, all they do is reset the codes if any and the problems continue. It also has a problem starting occasionally after filling it up with gas. For the price, VW should do better. I was going to set my sights on a Eos next but, I refuse to buy another VW. I find regular maintenance is way overpriced as well. I follow the manual to a tee and also use synthetic oil and premium gas all the time.

My VW 2006 Passat just turned 77,000 miles and I brought the vehicle into the dealership becase of a "Check Engine" light and was told that the camshaft needed to be replaced. Upon asking why the camshaft went bad so early in the car's life, the dealer stated that this is due to infrequent oil changes or the wrong oil being used. I showed proof of eleven oil changes (only requires 7) using the recommended Europeon Synthetic blend, but VW would not assist in payment of the repairs. $3,000 repair - thanks VW. DO NOT BUY VW's!!!

I am a big VW fan and I've driven 3 different VWs, this 06 Passat is the latest one I owned and then reason I bought it is because of the performance and the design. I already know that they break a lot but i did not know that they REALLY BREAK A LOT! I've had AC replaced, fuel pressure regulator replaced, rear brake replaced in 2 weeks of ownership- 1 week the car is in the shop. LUCKILY I am still under warranty until 04/2010, I don't know if I should keep this car or not, I still love the car, but I never thought it would be such a big pain, I have to be honest with you guys and it wasted tons of my time and money to drive the car to service and have someone pick me up!!!!!!!!

I have owned a Passat for past 8 yrs. The new 2006 model has been great. It is a head turning and even teenagers say "Nice car!" The gas mileage has been awesome, I have to drive 21 miles one way to work and I get between 30- 33 mpg. My Passat gets about 550 miles per tank. I haven't had any issues with this Passat, only routine maintenance. the only thing I don't like about the car is you can't drive with driver side window down. The wind blows so hard through this window I can't stand it. I have tried to adjust other windows and sunroof and nothing works. I don't know for newer models but for 2006 this is a problem for me. But overall I would recommend this car to anyone.

I've seen a lot of people mention the tire pressure sensor light going off all the time. There is a small washer that sits against the pressure sensor. Sometimes that washer gets bent which will let air leak from your tires. Ever since I found out about that and replaced the washers, I've had no tire pressure issues. The car is wonderful, fun to drive, comfortable, and solid. There are so many airbags and the frame is solid, the doors are heavy, etc. I love my Passat. There have been problems with the transmission jerking, electrical malfunctions, etc. It's a pain, but I still love the car.

The sideview mirros are smaller and you can misjudge your clearance to pass. The engine valve are louder ....have had 3 recalls. I took it back and the claim it was repaired.. it is louder. The driver's side door is warped! The front speakers in the door are crackling...no one told you could put change in the top tray.. which fell down behind the dash.. no telling what damage that will cause.. get this you can't slide them out.. after I pay this off ... I am going back to Nissan...

I bought my 2006 Passat 2.0T loaded w/ everything but Navigation as a Certified PreOwned. Long story short. In the first 3 months of ownership car brokedown once and needed to be towed (electrical brake stuck and couldn't drive), transmission issues, buttons pealing, rear door wouldn't close shut, Tire Monitoring System Failure, and the list goes on. Car was down 27 days in first 3 months and VW put $5200 into it...thank God for the CPO warranty! Not to mention this car stickered for over $30K and now they want to give me $12K for trade in...what happened to VW resale. This Passat when working is much funner than Camry or Accord, and looks better IMO but just not worth the HEADACHE!

I've had my 06 passat for almost three years but i has caused me so many problems, I am always at the dealership, it started with my windows not rolling down and it spent about two weeks to be repaired. My carpet in the interior started tearing when it was a few months old, and is reaping again after it was fixed, tire pressure sensor is on and off, air bag failure, to major problems such at recall on fuel pressure sensor that has been replaced three different times, and now the camshaft and fuel pump has to be replaced.....this car is comfortable but not reliable everyday i drive im afraid is going to leave me stranded never again will i purchase a vw! hopefully this is helpful for whoever

Normally get rid of a car that I've purchased after 2 years. This one is a keeper. Fun factor over rides the fixes it has needed that were covered under warranty. Headlamps that bend were replaced, & auto 6 speed was flashed. Well optioned sedan that is almost the size of an A6. Only thing missing is cabin adjustable suspension. Kudos to VW. Rides super and will put a smile on my face when I ask her to respond. Picking up second Passat in two days - an 08 Lux Wagon 2.0T (chain driven) that is also optioned very nicely. Replacing our '03 Allroad. Really - No baloney/just lean venison and buffalo :-)

I purchased this car it had only 8,000 miles on it. The car has been a complete nightmare with replacement of many valves, air compressor, condenser, peeling of interior, burning lots of oil, finally new engine, now my transmission valve body needs to be replaced. There needs to be a class act law suit, no one should have these types of problems it it a Major headache. I have missed time away from work and luckily it is still under warranty just stay on top of the dealership to fix this problem. But if you are looking buy a new car Honda or Nissan which run great.. I'm thinking about trading once the warranty runs out. I think the workers were on drugs when they built the car and parts.

I loved this car - talk about an exciting ride! Hit the gas and it flies. However, in the 2 1/2 years that we owned it, it spent 58 days in the shop - that averages out to 1 day for every 500 miles, some stuff minor, others major. Two visits were 3 weeks long because they would fix one thing and another would go bad. 4 rearends, a catalitic converter, multiple relays - parking brake, heated seats, radio etc., We actually traded this off while it was in the shop for another long visit. 500 - 200 miles between visits. Oh and the brake calipers were bad, this happened on its last visit - not really impressed.

My Passat has been a major disappointment. I've had all types of problems: electrical/engine warning lights, stereo volume, door locking, a/c, when driving and sunroof is open it makes a horrible sound, air quality, brake inefficiency, fuel cap, the list goes on. Ironically, my car is an '06, I have a 39 mo lease and only have 24,000 miles on it. From a comparison standpoint, my 2003 Pathfinder has 50k miles, and I have only had to change the tires & brake pads. To top it off, you can't buy wipers anywhere!

When I first got the car, I loved it. Great sport suspension ride. Responsive. But then the problems started to happen withing a month of owning the car. Thus far, tire bearing replaced, camshaft replaced, fuel injector replaced, transmission value, spark plug replaced from carbon build up (always used premium fuel with cleaning addictives!), software reflashed multiple times, radio update for sound being muffled, oil burning and I can go on and on. This is on top of the multiple recall work. Where is the quality control?!!! Have yet another appointment to address more oil burning and car jerking from downshifting. Spent more time in service for this VW than all other cards I owned in past!

Yes very nice drive but OMG the issues. I should have looked at reviews, before getting this nightmare. VW is loving the money, cause they are taking it in double from us. Oil lights, low tire pressure issues, engine off lights, and the techs say "I didnt see any problems." REALLY no problems... never will a VW be in my yard again. NEVER !!!!!!!!

Do not buy this car! It is so unreliable. It has been nothing but a nuisance since I bought it 2 years ago w/problems from a constant "low tire pressure" indicator flashing, a constant "check engine" indicator flashing (only to disappear a day or two later ...), problem burning oil (you have to get it changed every 3,000 or you will be stranded on the roadside), poor roadside assistance service, faulty braking system, the list goes on and on! I will never, ever buy from VW again; terribly overpriced for such poor quality manufacturing!

The car looks great, it handles well, and it is very comfortable to ride in. Find another car that has so many luxury features for the price. The above said, the reliability of the car has been a nightmare. I've had the A/C Replaced, throttle body, pcv valves, gas cap, interior buttons, shocks, all replaced. I've had all of the TSB's that applied to the 2006 model just about - and there are a lot. I've had about 15-18 services since I bought the car in 2006. Which works out to almost every other month (it wasn't that frequent but sometimes it was 3 times in a month).

This is an awesome vehicle to drive. The handling and performance is unmatched by anything else in the category; however, this is my second VW and the same problems have occurred in this one as my 2001 jetta. The menu frequently posts inaccurate information such as tire pressure too low and the check engine light comes on. The Windows create a blind spot and the sunroof is inefficient.

I have been experiencing constant issues with Volkswagen since I purchased it in 2005. I think it is the company at a whole not the dealership alone. My car is always serviced by the inexperienced mechanic. I seriously had parts broken and fall of after a service from a VW dealership. I can understand if I was going on the corner to have my car repaired then I would be accountable. I just want VW to be accountable for once. Always a service engine light, PCV value, manifold issue, brakes or whatever else that occurs.I am not stopping here. I refuse be treated in this manner. If you really like this car, then make sure you have a bumper-2-bumper warranty, otherwise you are on for a rather sour treat. The 2.0T engine is amazing, but the rest of the electronic components are so below standards IT'S RIDICULOUS!. This car has so many electronic/software bugs, it's crazy. Just go to the online communities and you'll see for yourself. Common problems with this car (2006-up): Evap purge valve clogging, A/C Condenser failure, Steering wheel lock defective(very unsafe), gas cap defective, TPMS miss-reading, Radio unit errors, and the list goes on, and on.

My Passat has had so many malfunctions and about 15 trips to the service dept. The ignition coil melted, which put my car out of commission for over a week. The low tire pressure light comes on often. After I filled all 4 tires with the recommended 33PSI,the light went out for 1 day and came back, I called the dealership, they told me they like to see 40 PSI, so I did. Still light trouble. I continued to call and they told me maybe the sensor has not yet registered and to drive my car for a few days to see if it goes out. Nope and then I was stranded on the road because the tire blew to pieces! Short story,the tire pressure regulator was defective. VW did not want to be responsible. VW rude!

The car has been very reliable and handles well. A small transmission fix and a console trim door replacement when new. Almost 3 years and 38K miles later and no other repairs. I've fixed a couple rattles in the IP. Oil changes are expensive, about $80 every 7500 miles at the dealership but the service experience is excellent. Comfort seats even in leather are adequate at best but far from comfortable. Air conditioning is marginal, inadequate above 90, and I replace cabin filter annually.

I previously owned a 98' passat and loved it, even though it gave me nothing but problems. I Recently got the 2006 passat and all i can say is WOW. I am uber pleased with what i got. The original owner paid $32,000.00 and with only 39560 miles on it i managed to get the price from 21k to a simple 16k. By far the best car i have invested in. I love the power and performance. I suggest you use Amsoil Full synthetic oil 5w 40 European blend. It makes the power of the 225hp and turbo show through with amazing up and down shifts also helps car start immediately in cold. This will not be my last Volks. I think that this car will out last my last on. the Germans know how to engineer. Buy one!!

Electrical problems began from the very beginning.The check engine light came on all the time.The car was in the shop frequently. I have had to replace both rear wheel bearings with just over 50,000 miles on the vehicle. I contacted Volkswagen USA and they were very rude and abrupt and stated the wheel bearings had to be replaced because of the bad road conditions. Bought 3.6 Luxury model with less than 7K miles. Absolute pleasure to drive, when it's not in the shop. I love this car but it has been at the dealer at least once every month for a repair - usually electrical stuff in the past. Now with 31K miles they are installing a new engine! Oil pump bolt came loose. My wife wants to sell it and get another Subaru. I can't argue too much - we've had 4 Subs, all went over 200K without a problem. Last VW, 01 Jetta TDI, replaced Turbo at 118K miles, glow plug problems often, check engine light on often - it too was fun to drive but I want to give the Passat one more chance to stay out of the shop, but I think I'll have to face reality & sell it.

This 2006 3.6 Passat is my 3rd. For quality, ride, comfort, and mileage it's the best. I commute 35 miles each way to work, and daily checking my mileage computer; I get 31-33 MPG! And, that's not all cruising! On road trips, I also have validated mileage of 31-34 MPG at highway speeds. This vehicle is vastly under-appreciated. It compares with ANY, more highly visible, family sport sedans. As importantly, my dealership; Britt VW, is a gem. Great car, great dealership, and great daily fun driving a car that handles exceptionally, is comfortable, has all the power you need, and gets great mileage. Fact is, this 2006 3.6 auto gets better mileage than my 2003 V6 5- speed!

As I near the end of my lease, I have been very satisfied with my Passat. Haven't had the reliability issues that others have mentioned and my dealer has been great. Any minor issues I've had have been corrected in a timely fashion. Great gas mileage, still drives like a dream, little lag when using tiptronic and coming off the freeway, but overall, this is a great car. This is my 3rd VW and I haven't had a moments trouble with any of them. I've been test driving other cars like crazy and I would have to pay more to get all the bells and whistles that come standard on my Passat. Looking forward to the CC.

After 16,500 miles, I sold my Passat due to the on-going quality and reliability since buying the car 22 months ago. The car has spent overt six weeks in the dealership primarily for a new transmission, new exhaust system and new fuel system. I reached a point with the car that I was afraid to go over normal road bumps. VW did supply me with rental cars. Overall, I would not recommend buying VW. Just too many issues with the quality and reliability. Please do additional research if you are going to buy a VW. Ask mechanics and rental car agencies about their experience with VWs. If you buy one, you should get to know the service manager.

This is my second VW. I hoped that this car would last for 150-200k miles and now at 86k miles I need a new engine. I have already had the entire steering column computer system replaced, replaced the battery twice, had to have the navigation fixed because the system was stuck, have been stranded because the key would not work, had transmission serviced, the cam is bad ($5k), and the fuel pump is bad ($2k). They acknowledge that they have an issue with the cam and have changed the design because the car is out of warranty will not do anything to assist. VW has offered me $1000 toward the purchase over another VW. No thanks! If you drive a lot... do your research before you purchase!

I got this vehicle three years ago, after owning an earlier Passat. The car is great to drive (a "poor man's BMW"); driving and maneuvering at speed is effortless. But now, it simply has to go, and the reason is reliability. One time the trunk lid decided to unlatch at the most inconvenient times, such as speeding down a highway. The radio controls blistered. The instrument panel said "steering column defective" for no obvious reason - took replacement of the entire steering column and circuitry to fix it - covered under warranty, but still ...

Our 2006 Passat has been a nightmare. We have had the car in the shop 15-16 times for the replacement of peeling switches, recall fixes, but most important oil consumption problems. I noticed after the first oil change the car was using 1-1.5 quarts of oil every 5k. I was told normal by Volkswagen dealer. It has gotten worse and a 5k oil consumption test showed 3 quarts per 5k. Most recently they are performing a 1000k test but no acknowledgment of a problem. I am done with Volkswagens once I get rid of this one. Recommend Honda, Toyota or Nissan to prospective buyers.

I waited 7 years and finally got a Passat (after a Honda, Camry and Mercedes). I take care of it but have spent way too much time in the dealership for annoying warnings that turn out unfounded, fixing peeling radio buttons and armrests, or an airbag fault. In 2.5 years, I've probably made 15 trips there - 25 miles away and time off work. I expected reliability; instead the battery just died without cause, and the "tire pressure too low" alert came on for the 14th time although the tires are fine. The dealership stopped asking my opinion for their surveys in the waiting room. Maybe I got a lemon, but VWs are history for me.

Best car ever owned. Bought for the safety features, 30+ MPG, four adults capacity and could not be more pleased. Using mid-grade gas, average 33 MPG in easy driving and 25 when pushed hard. No reliability issues whatsoever. Great driving experience feeling like a much more expensive car. Very stable and cruises at 85 without feeling sensation of speed. Surprised by the power of the Turbo 4; more surprised at the combo of power and excellent gas mileage. Major complaint is the original equip Goodyears slipped badly when wet / cold. Bought a set of dedicated snow tires for my snowy CT winters and replaced the summer tires with Continentals -- problem solved. I'd buy again!

Hands down the best car I've ever purchased. Traded in my A6. The Passat still looks great even after 2 years and 22,000 miles. The only problem I've had is the windshield washer not working which the dealer fixed right away. Other than that just regular maintenance. I'm getting first class treatment from the dealer. They treat me better than the Audi dealer (Don Rosen) ever did. I am using regular gas and still getting 36 mpg on the highway, 25 mpg around the neighborhood. The interior is so solid. Not one creak or rattle. It has been a pleasure to drive and I will definitely be looking at the Passat CC next year.

I feel I have owned the car long enough to have thoroughly judged it. Mine is a fully loaded sport/luxury package minus the nav (won’t pay the price for a factory nav) I bought the car new and compared the BMW 330, Mercedes CLK, Audi and Maxima. For me the bang for the buck in the Passat was a winner. I am 6’4” and this car fit me best of all those. I regularly make 300+ miles and my back and legs do excellent! I paid less than most and more than others got a great deal for the package. A feature I refused to pay for but now can’t live out are parking sensors! There is a weird hesitation on the throttle that everyone deals with. It took me 6 months to master but now I don’t even notice.

Haven't had a single problem with this vehicle and it's a pleasure to drive. Some times the problems reported are the result of the driver/lack of maintenance, or someone who has purchased a flooded car.

I like the way the car drive and the interior design. I have had to take the car in for service over 15 times for problems in less than 3 years. On multiple occasions I had to return to the dealer because they didn't have necessary parts and needed to order overseas. This problem has occurred at multiple dealerships

Just bought a '06 Passat from VW dealership in Freehold, NJ. Luckily we're under warranty. After 3 days of ownership my wife broke down on the G.S.P. and the car needed 4 new ignition coils, mass air flow sensor, 2 additional wires, 20 Amp fuse, head cover, engine harness. Wow. Thank god we're under warranty. This from a clean car-fax and apparently brand new looking/feeling vehicle. Now after receiving the car back from the dealer the malfunction light is on and back it goes! A few more days and this will meet the 20-day lemon law criterion.

I bought this car for quality. But have not received anything but aggravation. What a big lie that Germans build quality. Since I bought this car I been taking it to the dealer for electrical problems. Too many to list. And forget about vw to help, all they tell me "I'm sorry to hear that you having trouble."

I test drove the Altima, Camry, and Corolla along with the Passat. The Passat was far superior, and unexpectedly solid. It felt like I was driving a much more expensive car, tons of power, great visual and mechanical design. But, I was conned. The window sticker said MP3 and Navigation system, MP3 was never there. I brought this up to the dealer, and got the run around. VW service has been shady at multiple service centers. The rubber coating on the interior is bubbling. And none of it is covered by the very very limited warranty. And the tiptronic transmission is more of a suggestion to the engine than a command with it's slow response. And the trunk will not close in cold weather

Never mind the BMW, get a Passat

I stepped into this car from a BMW 325i, after considering a 525 or Infiniti G35. The Passat looks, feels and drives better, with more power and same confident German road handling. Not to mention a great deal more interior space and a more comfortable layout. In no time you are doing 60 without any strain on the V6. It's an absolute joy to drive - and for much less than comparably performing cars.

I've had my Passat for about 18 months now, and I love driving it more every time I come home from a long business trip that put me in a boring rental. It handles superbly, the engine is rev-happy and powerful while getting great mileage, the Dynaudio stereo is incredible (when it's working correctly) and the interior is stunning. However, I've had some quality issues pop up. Some odd interior rattles have developed, a trim piece or two has fallen off, and the stereo and XM receiver have been replaced four times and the problem still persists. I think newer Passats have had these issues ironed out, but I'm starting to miss my Acura TL in the reliability and build quality department.

1st and last

For 1st several months loved it. Then radio, door handles, lock buttons replaced. Then Major repairs, fuel line changed 2x, motor taken out to be worked on, recalls, having to take time off, then air compressor and condenser out. This was after I was over warranty at 55,700 miles only 2 years old. Cost to repair in excess of $2000. I was concerned early on about problems that I was experiencing but only recourse was to let it be fixed while under warranty. After warranty is up, beware, expect problems, cost to repair is very high. VW corp. Did offer me a $1000 voucher towards the purchase of a new VW/Audi. No thanks, traded on a Toyota! Disappointed in quality of VW, loved this car but had to go.

This is my first VW; was searching Mercedes when I came across this. I bought mine certified Off-lease. The dealers seem to have a hard time keeping these on their lots; now I know why. I've owned Lexus and BMW. This ranks right up there, lacking a few luxury features, like full power memory seats, rain sensing wind shield wipers, etc. Drives like a beemer but with a smoother tranny. Great styling turns a lot of heads. Spacious comfortable ride. Exceptional gas mileage compared to competitive class size. Needs stronger AC, better cup holders and improved wind noise, but should expect this from a German car. This is a lot of car for the money. Very fun to drive.

I am not a first time VW owner. I have owned 7 VW’s over the years (’68 Karmann Ghia, ‘84 Scirocco, ‘82 Rabbit (petrol), ‘88, Camper, ‘93 Jetta GLX, ‘97 Passat, and my current 2006 Passat 2.0T). I have been a loyal VW customer through the good, bad, and the ugly. My VW opinion changed forever after my recent VW purchase : 2006 Passat 2.0t with a 6 speed manual. The car not only left me stranded on the 101 at 3 am in the middle of nowhere California but it caught fire minutes after the car shut off

This is my third VW, after 20 years without one. I test drove a comparable Accord, Camry, etc. They all boast better reliability, but cannot compare to the performance, comfort, quietness, and quality feel of this car. I get 30+ MPG highway. My reliability issues: I had squeaky front suspension in cold weather, VW put in new struts under warranty. I had a lot of squeaks in doors, but was easily solved with using silicone spray where ever rubber seals touch metals surfaces. (The outside door seals were the culprit, not the inner rubber, if you have this problem).

Best car for the money dollar per dollar

The cars is 200HP and you feel it. Paradise for tall people, more leg room than an E class Mercedes. At high speed in the highway you notice why European and Japaneses are different. Well built and fun to drive, very reasonable fuel consumption. No problems whatsoever in 13,500 miles. A lot of car for the money and safety features are important to me. This VW is designed to go over 100 MPH on the Germans "autobahn" and engineering is superb. I'm extremely happy with the purchase of my Passat. The human bean is the most perfect machine in the world and sometimes fail. What the people expect of a car? In live luck counts for all. Wishing you good luck on your new Passatt as I had.

Performance is exceptional and fuel economy is great. Fun to drive. Very comfortable seating for average height drivers. Only complaint is front cup holders, hard to fit two drinks at same time.
