Bought the Avalon with 150,000 miles on it. Now has 205,000 & just routine maintenance battery, brakes, oil changes & tires. It rides as good as my Mother's cadillac dts. Very comfortable car for road trips or just city driving. I would highly recommend this car, after all its a Toyota, what more can I say - extremely dependable! Overall a classy luxury car for the young or young at heart.

I have said for a long time that this is a great car on so many levels. Its a 5 star car with one bad star which is not its fault. Technology. This car was built in late 2005 as a 2006 Avalon XLS. This was before car interior technology has blossomed into what it has become today. So its missing Bluetooth, USB ports and NAV. But for those that remember tape cassettes, CD player and great sound this car rules. This car rules in many other ways too. Spacious interior design. So much so that you can have 5 large adults seated in the car. Both front seat pushed all the way back and those seated in the back will still have ample leg room. And the back seats tilt backward giving those adults a limo like ride. Excellent MPG for such a big car. I regularly get 31 MPG on the highway. The only vehicles that get better gas mileage are hybrids! This Avalon has stayed in great shape and Toyota has maintained it wonderfully. I think the car will run forever!

As an auto repair shop owner I'm blown away about the negative reliability reviews. I saw one two star review because of an oil leak on a 9 year old toyota with 97,000 miles! What kind of bubble do people live in where this is considered unreliable? All cars have what we call "pattern failures" specific to certain makes and models. ALL CARS have pattern failures. All cars need repair periodically. As a luxury type car repairs will be more expensive. If you only need one or two repairs every 100,000 miles then you are operating a very well built machine. If you dont beleive then buy a Chrysler next time so you can see what frequent repairs are really like. On a lighter note, the Avalon is great. I have driven most makes and models in my line of work, and you will have a hard time matching this much comfort and quality for the price of the Avalon.

She has a few dings and scratches and arm rest has a tear in it from my elbow over the years. The car has never been in the shop except for oil changes every 3000 miles, new skins, breaks and the recommended maintenance checkups. She runs like a champ!

I have owned my 2006 Toyota Avalon for nine years now and have never had any problems. I service it regularly and it still drives exceptionally well with 97,000 miles on it. Most of my driving is on California freeways or on long road trips in the American Southwest. This is the perfect road car with plenty of acceleration, comfort, excellent heater and a/c, and a great stereo. Visibility is excellent. I put on expensive Good Year Eagle Sport tires (W speed rating) at 30,000 ,miles and this made the ride noticeably smoother and the cornering sharper than the original OEM tire. Despite Good Year's claims, these tires only really last ~20,000 miles, but the tradeoff is worth it. I put on slotted racing discs on the brakes and ceramic pads. This is a big car that drives like a midsize sports sedan. I push the car and it likes it. 85mph cruising speed @ 2500 rpm for miles across the American Southwest all day long in any season. My last big road drive was in 112 F weather Arizona and the a/c worked great; the car had no problems with the temperature. I headed up the mountain to Prescott and got caught in a monsoon, a torrential thunderstorm going uphill at 4,000 feet. There was no place to pull over on the steep mountain road so I used the Avalon's very practical and well-engineered Manumatic transmission to hand shift through the deluge going up the steep and winding grade. No problem with traction, power, or anything else in this big thunderstorm with near zero visibility. Update: I had an ignition coil fail at 100,000 miles and replaced all of them. This is a commonly reported problem on the 2006 Avalon at >95,000 miles. The replacement factory coils restored the acceleration and engine smoothness. The 2006 Avalon accelerates very quickly and smoothly in the 70-90 mph region. This makes it great for passing slower cars and trucks on freeways and the open road. 2016 is supposed to see a glut of two year old cars on lease returns. I may finally sell my 2006 Avalon and pick up a 2014 Avalon. I can sell my 2006 Avalon for about $7,000 and pick up a 2014 Avalon for ~$25,000 from a rental car company. This means a net cost of around $18,000 for at two year old Avalon with about 26,000 miles on it. The Avalon has the Lexus E350 268hp engine, transmission, and suspension and so an $18,000 price is appealing given the performance and comfort of the Avalon. If I keep the 2014 Avalon for nine years as I have with my 2006 model, then my cost of ownership is $2,000 per year plus routine maintenance. A new 2016 Camry with the same engine stickers at $32,000. However, the Camry lacks the solid ride and comfort of the larger Avalon. I have driven a few Camry rental cars while traveling and they just don't measure up to the Avalon. Conclusion: A two year old low mileage Avalon is better and less expensive than a new fully loaded Camry.

Timing cover oil leak

Our 2006 Toyota Avalon with 92k miles was diagnosed with a timing cover oil leak at my local Toyota dealership. Cost to repair was $1950. After discussing this the service manager and searching online, I find that this problem is very common in the 3rd generation Avalons. We’re the original owner. The car has been garage kept, not driven is any harsh conditions, and never in an accident. The car has had service at our local dealership every 5K miles. This is our first Toyota and we bought a Toyota car because of its long history of dependability. We never expected such a costly repair cost like this, especially because of a defective sealant on the timing cover. Toyota has issued service bulletins on this issues. So they recognize that it is a problem, I contacted Toyota customer service to complain and got no satisfaction. This problem should have been pointed out to me while the drive train was still under warranty.

I am 20 years old and this is my 12th car (i'm an addict). No my parents dont give me ANY money. Anyway! I was lucky enough to score one of these for a few thousand cheaper than its value. And so far, its been excellent! I got the limited model loaded with everything. White exterior with tan interior. I did notice while doing an oil change it takes quite a bit of oil, 6.4 quarts to be exact! Mileage for this massive sedan I'm able to get average 32-33.5 on the highway going 72. That is unheard-of for its size! I've gotten up to 400 out of a tank with city AND highway driving, and to fill up only costs about $35, about 14.5 gallons, (even though it has an 18.5 gallon tank)! I've put in pioneers latest avic-7000nex navigation touchscreen stereo and it fit perfect, all functions still work! The only problem i've had was engine code p0441 and p0455, if you get these codes replace the fuel cap and that should fix it! (It will also turn on VSC and I think ABS light. There is a problem on 05-12 (dont quote me) avalons where the fuel cap wears out. I paid 6,700 and it only has 108k miles and its in excellent shape! It shifts buttery smooth and the amount of power it has (280hp) will compete with any other (ricer) or sedan out there. I love the smart-key feature. I would buy again.

Engine is the only questions. 60,000 miles and a valve spring busted. this was in 2012 and cost $3,400 to fix. Now in December 2014 with 81,000 miles it's a leak in the timing cover, the oil pan, and the rack and pinion. Estimate cost to all is about $3,580. At some point you lose trust in a car. Everything else about the car has been great.

I have 52,000 miles on my Avalon and the dash is getting hairline cracks everywhere. I was told it would cost $1,200. to replace .Then this week my rubber oil line hose failed that repair cost was $425. I almost damaged the engine but I was able to take it to a dealer for repairs . It seams the rubber on the Toyota is defective !! NOTE: the hose is 4 inches long and cost $78. On the internet you can buy 5 feet of the same Original Equipment Manufactured hose for $10.00 from part # 13016

Broken Front Coil Spring

My 2006 Avalon hit a small dip in the road and the right front coil spring snapped (thankfully at the very bottom) . I removed the broken part and was disappointed to find out it is a very light weight spring and looks like & feels like it was made out of pot metal. And my Platinum Extended Warranty (that I never used and cost me an extra 1K) is over the time limit. Car has 94K and we bought it new. As far as Toyota Service goes they have been a disappointment , they try and get a person to have expensive un-needed work done on their vehicles . I will call Toyota in the A:M and plead my case. Anyone else have this happen? if not beware these coil springs are junk.

I am very disappointed in the dash on my 2006 Avalon. It has started to have hairline cracks everywhere. The car has 68000 miles and has always been garage kept. I went on the internet and found that many people have had the same problem. Toyota refuses to acknowledge the defect. I think that people should be made aware that this happens.

As a young family of 3 we wanted to get a car where the kids elbows don't touch which sparks arguments and they can't kick the front seats which drives me nutty. Low MPG SUVs were out and putting money into a dreadful minivan felt as good as paying federal taxes. We are in our 30's and this car seemed out of our age group but the Touring edition adds some youthful style and let's face it, still better looking than a minivan. The reclining rear seats are great for the kids. Smooth and quiet ride even at 90,000 miles and about 31 MPG on the highway. Rides equal to a newer vehicle but we only paid about $13,000. Not bad for a large family car with leather, heated seats, and a moonroof.

This car can easily beat many of the luxury cars in style, performance, comfort and features. I bought it used and will be driving it until many years to come. The only drawback I find is that it doesn't have iPod Jack which I'm going to have installed. Every time I drive the car, I appreciate it even more then last time. Fuel economy is unbelievable, it gives me 30+ on the highways. I'm a car lover and even though its not really a driver's car but I'm willing to compensate only that part with everything else in the car. The rear seat room is like a limousine and it even reclines. I am never worried about the repair costs, its like driving a German car with no maintenance

We have always had great experiences with Toyota Avalons. My husband drove our last Avalon for years with minimal service required. We recently just purchased another used Avalon 2006 Limited without any hesitation. High quality, affordable, and it was nice to know that the value of the car did not depreciate as soon as we drove it off the lot (like other brands).

I bought a 2006XLS in March 2006. Today, it has 206,000 miles on it without one single problem. I have replaced the tires, battery and brake pads. It still has the original spark plugs, water pump, starter, antifreeze, trans fluid and serpentine belt (which isn't even cracked!). This car has been nothing short of amazing. It is big, the back seat is the biggest of any car I have seen. It is fast with plenty of torque all the way through the powerband, feels like a V8. It averages 27 miles to the gallon with 80 percent highway driving. It is super quiet and smooth. The Camry isn't even close to an Avalon. This is BIGGER than Lexus ES350, yet cheaper. Im going to keep on driving it.

This model year must have been the peak of Toyota's lack of attention to quality. The engine oil issue is a complete quality AND customer service fail. After suffering through that, in the last month I've had to replace the entire AC system. Last year when the car was 4 y/o with 100k miles the AC started blowing warm. Dealer did not find leaks, recharged, and it was ok for the rest of summer/fall. This spring, same thing. This time dealer found "lots of pin holes in the condenser". Read: no trauma, just a quality fail. I've never seen this and my prior cars were all over 200k miles. Now, *perhaps* a result of the condenser fail, the compressor seized. Total bill to fix AC: $2500

Purchased the car in early 2006. I now have 60,000 miles and I am experiencing problems with my steering. I have taken it back to the dealership several times for the steering sticking when turning left but they informed me that they can not find anything wrong. I am very disappointed with Toyota and see that many others are experiencing the same problem. My hope is that I will not experience the same problem that others are experiencing with the oil leak. Unless Toyota steps up and own up to fixing the legitimate repairs, I will never buy another Toyota. I am currently getting the runaround. Even though I have the extended warranty, Toyota is trying to get around fixing my problem.

Purchased it new based on the value for the money, safety and comfort. Did not order the nav or the laser cruise control which appears to be a smart move. White metallic paint with the light grey leather looks great. Add the factory mudflaps which will keep the sides of the car clean. No repairs of any kind until the recent rash of recalls. Transmission can seem "funky" once in a while? I believe that the Touring model has a less "soft" ride for more spirited driving dynamics but I did not like the black interior. Great road car! 4k mile drive out west and got +30 mpg at 80+++ all day long. We are in our 40's not 70's and we enjoy the car very much. We are keeping the car long-term.

This has beat every luxury car I have owned---BMW-Jaguar-Cadillac. It beats all in quality and comfort. Style could be a bit better but for the money the car is super. It is priced at a much lower price that the Lexus but has all the features of the top of the line Lexus. Highly recommend unless you are willing to spend $15-20K more for upgraded style.

Avalon is amazing. Where else can you get a full size luxury sedan, with V6 280 ponies, yet gets 31 MPG? No where else but Avalon. It's like riding around in your living room while sitting in your favorite recliner. Only thing missing is the 58-inch plasma. JBL stereo pumps, top of dash layout is a throwback of the 1970's (which I personally love), yet console is very modern/elegant. Car lifts up, takes off, as quiet as a sleeping baby. Buttons nicely placed, awesome visibility, adequate handling, elegant front/rear design. This car will never annoy you, and you'll arrive calm and relaxed. Avalon makes daily work commuting one of the highlights of my day. Alot of car for $30K, unmatched.

I purchase my 2006 Toyota Avalon in 2005, it was ok for about 2 years. When driving sometime my steering wheel would adjust it self to its lowest level with out me doing anything for it to happen which is not safe, I took it back to the dealer and they said they didn't see anything wrong with it and as of today it still dose it,it seems to be something with the steering level on the steering wheel. About a year ago I also had and oil leak up under my car and this year my alternator went out on me in the middle of the Dan Ryan Express Way, a scary situation and I had my ten year old grand daughter in the car with me.

I purchased a Toyota Avalon because I thought I was purchasing a reliable vehicle-this has been anything but the case. At 58000 miles I noticed a trail of oil leading up my driveway. Upon looking under the vehicle I noticed oil pouring out of the engine compartment (oil light never turned on). The vehicles vvt-i oil lines failed and the vehicle needed to be towed to the dealership. Ironically 2 weeks after this happened I received a service campaign notice from Toyota "recalling" the faulty oil lines. Incidentally the oil leak contaminated the alternator resulting in it being needed to be replaced. At 59000 miles the steering shaft began to clunk and now needs to be replaced ($379).

We had an 05 Buick LaCrosse which was a piece of junk, and traded for on 06 Avalon Limited. The Avalon is the best car I have ever owned. Fit and finish is outstanding, gas mileage is terrific. The ride is smooth and quiet. I have friends that are over 250lbs and they can get in and be comfortable. I had the windows tinted- pin stripped-gold plated the emblems and put chrome wheels on it. People think it is a Lexus. People should test drive the vehicle or take it home overnight, then they would know if they like the car or not. I will buy another Avalon.

Engine Oil Problem

AC light began flashing and I smelled burning oil. All of the engine oil had drained. I took it to a dealer who informed me that they needed to replace the oil line. This is a defect with this engine that really needs attention. I would not recommend Toyota or purchase another one since the quality is not there. This is the first time in 35 years of owning and driving cars that I have ever had such a problem.

First Toyota

My first Toyota but I've had numerous Japanese sedans. What separates the Avalon from other Asian performance sedans is that it has 268-280 hp yet takes regular gas and frequently gets more than 20 mpg. That alone is worth considering this car. Numerous reviews commented on what a good car this is but it's not "athletic." I've found the contrary with the Touring edition. The suspension is ideal and is mated nicely with the power of the vehicle. It feels very non-American because there is absolutely no bounce, no matter what kind of surface I'm driving on. Ironic since this is a large luxury sedan that was designed and built in U.S. Make a stick shift option and a less Camry-like exterior.

3 yrs old w/ 60k and maintained by the dealer. At 55k miles had the oil leak others mention. Originally 31mpg, now 25. The steering sometimes sticks when making a left turn and accelerating from a standing start. Keyless entry on the driver's door is failing 50% of the time. Cooling feature of driver's eat no longer works. Transmission taking longer to shift (will it make 100k?).

I was very confident with my Toyota. Loved it and was so pleased that it was one of the best made. Then I drove home from work with only 36,077 miles on the car and left a trail of oil down my drive way, then oil ran out all over my drive way as the rubber hose oil line had burst. I had it towed in to the Toyota dealer and of course the warranty covered it as I had purchased an extended warranty. I am now not confident with the reliability of my car.

This is my sixth Toyota and the reliability is very uncharacteristic compared to all the others. Major oil leak problem twice now makes the car completely unreliable. Also had a leak in the moon roof fixed. Continual problem with acceleration from a stop position corrected intermittently by a "computer reset". I think I'm going to trade it in. Also the car was bumped in a parking lot, in the front right causing only a scuff to the bumper. The whole bumper had to be replaced as it connects to the blinker light wells and the motor splash guard underneath, which both cracked.

Traded my 2003 Seville, not disappointed at all. The gas mileage is great on regular gas. Nav system leaves a little to be desired, that message gets on your nerves every time you start the vehicle. Should be easier to program. Sound is good JBL did a fine job although I did a personal upgrade surround sound is a great feature, Cabin is tight noise and rattle free. I bought 3 caddys before I purchased my Avalon. When it comes to comfort, it's a no brainer. Avalon wins; wheels down.

I loved my Avalon, but now have lost all confidence in its reliability. On an out of state trip an oil hose developed a pin-hole leak. There was no indicator or light alert. We still have not gotten all repairs done, but will cost min $2500!!! (of course out of warranty with approx 101,000 miles).

Overall our experience has been very good with our 2006 Avalon. The ride has been very smooth and quiet and the pick-up is very good. This may be one of the fastest cars we've owned (with a six).

I bought this car almost three years ago. I decided to get the Touring because the handling felt better than the XLS. The color is silver and with the XLS the interior wood was orange. With the Touring, it was sliver. The seats are very comfortable and I get close to 30MPG on the highway.

I have been surprised by this car. Good - Excellent fuel mileage (25 city, 30-31 hwy), comfort, luxury looks and feel. Bad - Intermediate steering shaft problem (outside wrty at 45K mi., transmission jerkiness (fixed by toyo with a reprogramming, $0), $900 repair est. (I declined to fix), check engine lite (50k mi, $1500 repair bill), now the poss. oil line leak repair before failure (repair cost unk.?). Also, watch out for dealers selling Toyota warranties that are not favorably received by other dealer in other states (SE Toyo dealers vs Midwest dealers).

The engine oil line (rubber hose) ruptured unexpectedly. I lost all of my oil. The mechanic is hopeful that the engine wasn't damaged. However, this is something that should never happen to a modern car. Toyota may be the new GM/Chrysler. Reliability sells. Unreliability gets you out of the auto business.

A friend with 30,000 miles on same model reported sudden loss of engine oil with no engine light. I talked with local maintenance supervisor about this. He reported this was a regular problem, especially at 50-60k miles. Replacement rubber hose hard to find. No recall yet but he expects one any day.

I am in outside sales. I drive about 45000 miles a year and this is a great car. Toyota has been very helpful also. I had the oil on the ground problem, will happen to every Avalon, and Toyota fixed it for free even though I was out of warranty. The gas mileage is great and the resale is great. With 110000 miles on the car right now the resale is still above 15000 (exceptional) would recommend to anyone and will purchase another.

Same thing happened to my Avalon . No light no warning. Dealer said just made it in before the engine went. Happened to our friend with the same car. Do not understand why Toyota has not done a recall if this is happening with a lot of Avalon's. Took almost three weeks for parts to come in. But the gave us a loner car. Love the car this is our first Avalon and will not be our last.

I purchased my car almost 3 yrs ago, everything was great until it reached 33000 miles; suddenly the engine produced loud noise, it was a complete loss of engine oil with no warning light in the dashboard. The dealer was very familiar with the problem before I even spoke. He asked me if it was the loss of engine oil. I would like Toyota to look into this problem. Otherwise the car is great and I love it.

I bought a 2006 Avalon because I had a 98 Avalon and loved it so much I didn't want to get a new one - but my husband wanted to get me a new car, so we got another Avalon. On relatively flat, freeway driving we get 33 - 35 mpg, much more than I thought we would get. We are very pleased with our car. I love the heated seats in the winter!

Traded an '01 Cadillac DTS for my first for my first foreign car (built in Kentucky!) and have been very happy. Excellent performance, 0 to 60 in under 7 sec,and averaging 29 mpg on highway on regular. Just returned from a 4000 mile trip and got 35 mpg on a 55 mph strip. That's as good as my daughter got on her '95 Civic coupe. The Caddy got 15 in town and only 24 max on the road. The Avalon has much better acceleration too. I also expect to get much better resale value than the Caddy.

Have had no problems with vehicle maintenance, the reliability has been very good. Average fuel mileage (regular gas) 27 mpg, the ride is comfortable with in-seat heat/cooling. Overall the vehicle has been great. The navigation system is a loser, very difficult to program and gives erroneous directions in congested areas. Save the $1900 and purchase a reliable portable GPS at a fraction of the price.

I bought my Avalon two years ago. On the whole, I do like it, but I am not impressed with little things that break, or more to the point, my dealership's response to it. Ever since I bought it, the lever that controls the steering column keeps slipping out of place and steering wheel gives way. Just now, after two years of ownership, the lock assembly on the trunk broke. Because my warranty is on 3/36, I have to pay $450 to have a lock fixed. If Toyota quality is so great, why doesn't the company stand behind its product with a more substantial warranty? Also, why should such a small problem cost so much to fix. A two year old car should not be having these problems. I am not impressed.

I like the stye, driving and riding comfort. The roof trim over the doors pops when using an automatic car wash. The navigation system is difficult to program and operate and is signficantly overpriced for the performance obtained. I will buy another Toyota Avalon Limited, but without the navigation system, unless it is redisigned to make it more user friendly.

Quiet and smooth. Good power and great mileage. I averaged 32.5 on a 1600 mile trip according to the computer. Dislike having to stop to program memory seats and navigation. Overall the navigation system is not user friendly. I always take my Garmin and it gives me much more information and quicker. I still like the car.

It is hard to identify my favorite feature on this car. Love the smart key/keyless entry/remote start, the heated seats, the spacious back seating that amazes passengers. The in-town gas mileage is a little low (about 18) compared to 30 freeway. Only problem I have had is a strip that comes loose from the roof top on the passenger side of the car when I go through a car wash. The only service work done has been oil changes. The car runs great. My previous car was a much-enjoyed 1999 Dodge Intrepid. In choosing this car, it was a decision between a similar cost/similar featured Mercedes. No regrets on choosing the Avalon over the Mercedes.

This is my second Avalon. I went from Avalon to E320. The E320 was major disappointment, so I went back to Avalon. I have had this car for over two years. I have not had any problems with. It ride fine. The only problem is the cheap bridgestones tires that come with it. I just changed all four tires to MXV4 and it rides fine. I the dealer install the iPod adapter and it works fine. Great car.

Comfort is very good, fuel economy good but the steering is very worrisome. It has a clunking sound and feeling when accelerating and stopping. Already replaced steering column once. Appears that another steering column has gone bad and needs replacing. Fortunately I have an extended warranty but Toyota has yet to approve another replacement of steering column. Very disappointed in the reliability and quality of the car. Excellent sound system and leg room in the car.

Thought the new Avalon would have better handling, but it drives like my father's old Buick. The concept is great... lots of features, good price/ value, should have good reliability, but "oh what a feeling" is missing big time. Mileage is 19 to 20 in town on the road it is 27+/-. The transmission seems to slip. Dealer says it is a new 6 speed auto and is supposed to slip(?). To our surprise it is not very comfortable on long trips. Neither of us have back problems but after 3 hours our backs start to hurt. So this car will be going on Autotrader/ Cars.com soon. It will be a while before we go back to Toyota.

Being the kind of person who looks for a good balance of performance, reliability, styling and luxury for a reasonable price, I settled on the Avalon. From day one of owning this car, there has never had a doubt in my mind that it was the right vehicle to achieve that balance. This has not been the case in prior vehicle purchases, and certainly not with the 300M I came from. No comparison. I selected the Touring trim, as I couldn't justify paying a lot more a few extra features (push-button start, rain-sensing wipers) that I really don't need. I miss the heated seats in Minnesota, but the car is black, so it works. This is a car that I know I will keep for many years to come.

During my long life (I'm in 80s) I've had Fords, Cadillacs, Mercedes and, more recently, Toyotas -- a Highlander and now an Avalon. Of all the cars, this one is the quietest, smoothest riding and easiest handling auto that I have ever owned. Have had no mechanical problems of any kind during it's first 15,000 miles.

This car rattled when I bought it. Five attempts to fix the headliner rattle and it still rattles. This makes me suspicious of Toyota quality in the Avalon. The car has developed other squeaks and noises too. This is my first new Toyota and I expected more. On the positive side, I love the comfort and performance. I will try another one if Toyota will take this one back.

I just purchased the Avalon Limited (demo). It has everything (nav, adaptive cruise, custom bluetooth phone integration). Car is definitely worth thousands more. Not only are all components user friendly, the car gets great attention on the road. One complaint is the cheap appearance of the radio and interior plastic.

Like the car. You have to push it thru corners though, not a natural feel. Nice interior, very roomy. Average 27 mpg. Good trunk space. Drove in northern Vt. this winter and handled well on all-seasons . Nice surprise.

Drove the fun but very uncomfortable FJ Cruiser for 6 months which wrecked my back. Checked out BMW/Audi/Volvo - quality not there for the $$$. This car has power, a very quiet ride, handles well, power seats with lots of adjustments, an elegant interior, and it's incredibly roomy inside. Mileage has been around 20, lower than advertised. Rear view mirror could be larger. Steering wheel should be power. No iPod/aux jack, but the stereo is really good. Keyless entry is addictive. Car should come standard with side molding!! I had mine installed right after purchasing it for around $200. The morning commute is now serene. Great value vs. Lexus, build quality is right there.

Had it for a year now. No major problems, lots of annoyances. The navigation system is very difficult to operate, with too many unecessary steps. Cannot change the route while car is moving. Radio FM displays no text while driving (for safety reasons, it says), but the satellite radio does show the first 10 letters of the song title and the singer's name. Squeaks and rattles from the dashboard and the sunroof. Drives well, good acceleration, though not as quiet as expected. Comfortable inside, lots of space. Satellite radio antenna's reception not as good as other competitors. Dashboard can create glare on the windshield under certain conditions. Overall happy with the purchase.

Love the car. Have 9000 miles on it, great gas mileage (22/31 as stated), great ride and lumbar support, etc., comfortable although somewhat noisy. Great get up and go. Looks more expensive than final price. Some harsh noise when on a rougher road. Make sure that you get the aftermarket side door protectors and mud flaps. Has saved my paint. Paint chips very easily, especially when someone attempts to open their door to full-width in a parking lot. Had trouble with air conditioner.. took dealer two weeks to get part and fix it. Had new Camry during that time to drive. No comparison... Avalon much better. Also be aware that the front bumper is low and you can knock airdam off.

This is my 8th Toyota and 2nd Avalon (last in 1996). Liked the way the car "sat". Like the comfort and interior "bells and whistles". I have never had a Toyota in during the initial warranty period. Luck I guess. I don't like the transmission trying to find the right gear at slow speeds, sometimes causing abruptness in the change of gears. Perhaps this is the nature of the beast with 5 forward. Everything else is absolutely first rate. Best Toyota yet!!!

After owning this car, it is easy to see why Toyota is doing so well. This American designed and built car is like owning a Lexus but costs much less. The blizzard-white pearl paint job is beautiful. Also owning a fuel stingy Rav4, I am also impressed with Avalon's 31 mpg on the highway. I test drove a Lexus and previously owned a Volvo, but the Avalon was such a great car for the money.

Best car I have ever owned after 10 vehicles. I have yet to find fault with this car. It is powerful, whisper quiet, short turning radius, conrners well at speed, and good mileage. It is what I thought it would be a bargain luxury car that competes with bmw, mbz, lexus but you do have to put up with a lack of a label prestige. So if you don't mind having a stealth car this one may be for you. Drive it fast and see what I mean.

I bought this car thinking I needed the extra room for my growing family. Ended up being the worst car purchase I have made. A car this expensive should not have the squeaks and rattles that it does and it seems a new one pops up every week. I also hate how the maintenance light comes on every 5000 miles. The paint is also horrible - it chips off the front very easily. I just purchased an Acura TL to replace my Avalon which is what I should have bought to begin with. I will not miss seeing this car in my garage.

Have read a number of reviews on this car. Some related a noisy engine, mine sounded like a diesel all of a sudden at 1500 miles. The dealership told me they had never had this problem before. They were extremely accommodating, replacing the engine without a second thought. They provided a brand new car as a loaner and treated us very well. Since the new engine the car runs very well with little engine noise. The rest of the car is phenomenal. The car is a huge upgrade from our 1997 Avalon, for only a couple thousand more than we paid for the '97. It is definitely the most comfortable car I have driven. The Touring edition was worth getting with the upgrades in suspension. I would buy another.

I've owned my Avalon for 9 mos now and really like it. The fuel economy and comfort are great. The car is a breeze to drive, quiet, and smooth (except when the transmission down shifts - abrupt). It lacks youthful style and a few amenities, like an iPod connection, that I would like to have. The keyless entry system is wonderful; however, the remote start is disappointing. The car also needs body side molding for protection. The interior materials are also inferior for a car cost $32k+. I would not buy another Avalon, mostly because they are not fun to drive. I'm in my early 50s and not ready for an old folks car just yet.

I bought this car after the birth of my son. I wanted a good car that would last 10 yrs. and hold its value. I’m usually a sport car/sedan kind of guy so this was a big leap for me. I have been pleasantly pleased with the car's overall character. I love the interior space and omission of unnecessary features. I added an aftermarket wood grain kit that covers the entire dash in the factory wood trip. The car now looks a lot more luxurious. My main concern is the appearance of squeaks and rattles. I would not expect this on a Toyota, especially one in this price range.

After months of research I bought my XLS in Feb 06 and have only 7,000 miles on it. The ride is exceptionally smooth, comfortable and quiet. The power is awesome and the body style is super. However, about six weeks ago a rattle developed in the moon roof. A near-by dealer has made attempts to fix it twice before, even put in a complete new moon roof but it rattles on. In fact it is at the dealer now as I type this with the same rattle in the moon roof. I love this car but am quite frustrated about this problem.

So far so good. Car seems dependable but not without its problems. Fuel mileage is not as stated (less than what Toyota claims). Takes several attempts to open the cover for radio and Nav, (have to push the buttons numerous times to open the cover). Nav is difficult due to having to use the "Enter" button constantly, older models were more intuitive. Difficult to find garage opener buttons on rear view mirror at night since they are not illuminated (neither are the buttons for the rear shade, trunk and fuel cap). Needs body side molding desperately to prevent dings and dents!

This car is a joy to own and drive. It is well-appointed both inside and out. My passengers rave about the roomy, comfortable back seat. The only complaint I have about it is that I have a difficult time entering destinations into the navigation system. It is the best car I have ever owned, gets the best gas mileage and has the most comfort features (air cooled and heated seats, keyless entry and driving). It is truly a luxury car for $35,000, has more features than cars that cost thousands more. Very safe and very fun to drive, has loads of pickup and passing capability.

One of the nicest vehicles I have ever owned. Recent trip to NC gave me between 33-34 mpg. Amazing and that's going 70-75 mph most of the trip. The only complaint I have is that you cannot shut the wipers "off". They are completely automatic and come on whenever a few sprinkles hit the windshield. I would recommend this car for overall comfort and fun to drive and of course the great mpg.

This is a great car for the price. Lexus quality for Toyota price. Would recommend this car to anyone. I have three small children (all under 7) and two are in full sized carseats. My youngest can't even kick the back of my seat while strapped in. Huge back seat and great trunk space. Full sized double stroller along with groceries fit just fine. And what can I say, it has Toyota mileage averaging 22 in the city and 33 on the interstate. Classy interior and a trustworthy ride, I would recommend this car to my best of friends.

I just got the Limited in 10/06. Love driving it. It is quiet and very comfortable. We would love to have the one that has DLCC, but the dealer doesn't have one for 2006. The 07 is more expensive. Therfore we decided to take the 06. I was disappointed after learning that we can not add the DLCC even though we willing to pay for it.

This is the smoothist car I've ever driven. It's fast, quick and very responsive. The nav system is a bit hard to figure out, but once you do it's great. This vehicle has the worst transmission I have even driven.It jerks every time it shifts and feels like a 10 year old Honda tranny.It is the only "Newer" vehicle that I noticed that still gear hunts.The seating position is horrible as well.I'm 6 feet(not extremely tall but not too short either) and the Avalon has no head room, leg room and terrible gauge visibility (I actually get cramps on my legs).This kinda keeps me away from enjoying the other amentities that comes with the car.Lumbar could be more stiff.Lastly, this is a brand new car and it makes creeks and rattles from under the passenger seat. One of my lights went out already.I'm getting a BMW next time.I loved my old 323i.

If I was given the money to buy a more expensive luxury car I would still choose the Avalon and keep the extra money. I might choose Touring with more options. The gas mileage has been great Regularly 32-34 mpg sometimes 37 mph hwy and 29 mpg city. Size is great for a family & reliability of the car has been excellent with no down time besides regular maintenance & oil changes. After buying 3 cars from Bob Smith Toyota they get's our families "kudos" in total satisfaction from sales to service. During my driving history (9 vehicles, 4 new) and driving over 25 years there has been no better dealership!!! The Avalon is tops for Economy, Safety, Reliability, Comfort, and looks.

I shopped the Buick Lacerne and the Avalon.The body style was the final draw to purchase the Avalon.It is a pleasure to drive plenty of power and comfort. Local milage has been 191/2 local and road 27 to 28 miles to a gallon at 70 to 75 miles per hour.People stop an say what a great looking car it is.My other car is a Lincoln continental the Avalon ride is as good.

After 16,000 miles, this car has NOT had any quality-related problem requiring a trip back to the dealership. Haven't experienced any sluggish performance in either the engine nor transmission as mentioned in some of the forum's posts. Very smooth ride and quiet in city & highway driving. Took quite a while to get that driver's seat adjusted just right. So much interior room without the closed in feeling like you get inside the Acura TL or Mercedes E320. A lot of car for $$$ less then Lexus. Once you start using the smart key, there is no returning to traditional car keys.

Traded in my 2002 Avalon XL for the 2006 Limited and no regrets yet. Rides like a dream and interior and exterior appearance much improved from 2002 model. Quiet ride, great accelleration, good fuel mileage for the size of the car. JBL sound system is top notch. Could do without the Laser cruise control as it will slow you down so slowly that you are not aware of it when approaching another vehicle.

This car is the best I have ever owned.It is comfortable, very peppy,gets decent gas milage and is thoughtfully designed inside and out. I weas a kid of 9 to 13 in World War 2, with high school heroes coming home after horrible treatment by the Japanese, so it took me 61 years before I would consider a Japanese car. But now I am very glad I bought a Toyota Avalon.

Great automobile for the money! The Avalon has many standard features that are extra in comparable models. The gas mileage is excellent. Highway 31+ City & Highway 23-27 MPG. The large car handles well with plenty of room for passengers. The vehicle is definitely worthy of the Lexus name, with the value and dependability of Toyota.

This is one fantastic car. I love how quick it is on the road and it drives like a luxury car. People are always telling me how beautiful this car is. I only have a few problems.The paint on the front of the car chips easily. I have lots of chips from stones. Maybe an extra coat of paint would help. The mirrors should turn in so I can get the car through the car wash. There are two blind spots if you look to the back of the car. Other than that, I love this car. Oh by the way. I still have a 1995 XLS with 160,000 miles and the car purrs like a kitten. Only thing I've had to do is put a timing belt in the car. These Toyotas run forever.

My 06 avalon has a anoying and what i feel is a dangerous problem with the transmission. It feels like it slips under certain conditions. The zone tech said it was because the computers in the engene and transmission could not communicate and that the factory had not figured out a way to reprogram it. This occures most often when i slow to almost a stop and then accelerate again. Since this is the same transmission used in the 05 i don't think they will find a cure soon. the problem is that when it slips the tendency is to give it more gas, which when it does catch, causes you to learch forward.

My wife has a 2006 Lexus GS300 and i have a 2006 Toyota Limited we have more room in my limited both in the rear and trunk then the Lexus. We use my Limited more then her Lexus and we payed a lot more for that lexus. For what i payed for my limited to me the car has a lot more to offer its a lot of fun to drive and the fuel ecomony is great. I'm getting 24 mpg around town and 34 to 35 mpg on the open road. As far as we are concerned we love our TOYOTA LIMITED. If any one is thinking about getting one please do so you wont be sorry. Keep up the good work TOYOTA.

At slow speeds, when gear lever in D, transmssion sometimes has difficulty in deciding appropriate gear to shift into. Toyota dealer says no problem, just a new configuration (drive by wire)that is developing a feel for driver's style. I believe there is a software glitch here. Also, am averaging 15mph city and 25 highway, well below published standards, while driving modestly. Finally, this car is hot, there is almost too much power for a front wheel drive configuration to handle. My 2000 XLS was a more satisfactory purchase.

This is my second Avalon, gave my old 1998 version to my son. I love the Lexus like quality and look. Great dash, plenty of interior space, lots of nice features, like the auto dimming exterior driver's mirror, extendable arm rest and reclining rear seats. Rear Lip Spoiler is a must. Was disappointed it does not come with body side moldings. Went on-line and found at Bob Bridge Toyota in Renton, WA. They are genuine toyota parts..... looks great and protects from door dings. Local dealer installed for $40. in my opinion they should have been there to start. All is all a great car to drive.

When we were looking to buy we were leaning to the Buick Lucerne my wife wanted the Avalon which we purchased the ride is very stable and engine noise very quiet compared to the Lucerne,we made a 2000 mile trip driving at 65 mph and got 37.3 mpg on the trip we have not driven a trip at 75 yet so I can`t give you a mpg at that speed but I`m impressed with the handling and overall quality and design of the 2006 Avalon excellent auto

Park far away because any door that hits into this car, you will get knicked. Gas mileage averages 20MPG and the best 25, not what it's rated at. Inside compartments get stuck sometimes. Passenger seat doesn't have many options. Kids love the back seat (reclining), but when left reclined, it's not comfortable getting into. Trunk space should be more. I'm keeping my van for family trips longer then 3 hours. I love riding in it & navigation is pretty easy. I don't have a problem with voice commands, but system doesn't like my husband's voice for some reason. (He doesn't have an accent, just a lower voice then mine!) Sometimes it takes several attempts.

Overall the car is very smooth, quiet and is generally well manufactured. Only time will tell how durable it is. Up to this point I had to have the left outside mirror repaired, the fuel door needed repair and one moulding needed minor repair. The worst thing is the dynamic laser cruise control. It is very erratic once there is more than one person in the car, it does not detect cars as advertised. The unit generally doesn't work in even light rain, is affected by bright sun, can only be adj in 5 mph increments they can't fix it - it is a waste of money until Toyota makes improvements.

First-time Toyota purchaser, can't say I've regretted it one bit. The Avalon surpasses the previous cars I've owned by light years in build, design, features and most importantly, quality for the money. The ride is smooth, yet firm. The detail to quality on the interior as well as the exterior is obvious. No cheap plastic parts that break off w/ lots of use. The 268 hp V-6 engine performs well, but does have a sluggish response occasionally in low gear. The styling is gorgeous inside and out. My husband is 6'4" and this car suits him well. The rear legroom is also a plus for passengers.

We turned over our 2001 Avalon to our daughter. The faith in the quality of the car gives us the comfort level for her to have the car for what should be 3 or 4 more years. The purchase of the the 2006 model was a step up in luxury from the older model. The driving experience is a pleasure. I would recommend this car to anyone.

I am very impressed with the MPG on this large car. My first highway trip gave me an MPG of 32. My wife loves and power and roominess. I added chrome wheels to my Black Touring Avalon (the standard Touring wheels would be fine if chrome instead of grey) and get plenty of positive comments. The standard sound system equals the Bose system in my other vehicle.

A very comfortable highway cruiser with good safety features and gas mileage. We love this car for its space, comfort level driving ease. Long trips are much less tedious than in the old (1997) Intrepid although it is a nice car it is not near the equal of this new Avalon.

The 2006 Avalon is a great car. I test drove many cars before making my decision to purchase the Avalon. I was looking for a larger car, with a more upscale and sophisticated appeal that was under $30,000. My Avalon XLS has it all: Leather seats, JBL Synthesis (booming) sound system, sunroof, sequential shifting, spacious interior, dual power seats, v6, excellent fuel consumption, clean looking dash board that's not cluttered and reclining rear seats. This car also has exceptional speed. If you're not careful, you'll be at 100 mph without knowing it. Nice handling for a large car. Sequential shifting really allows one to move quickly.

Not Quite Ready for Prime Time

My 2006 Avalon XLS is overall a great car. It has major drawbacks in the "drive by wire" trans; it can't seem to find its gear when your slowing down. If you speed up, it revs and then lunges, meanwhile nothing is happening to move you forward. This is a safety and fuel economy issue. The in-town, surface street mileage is awful, about 12-14 mpg, as is the stop and go driving and in-traffic mileage. On the open road, it gets great mileage, and has the power needed to get up and go. I've had some bad fit and finish experiences: side turn signal mirrors were distorted after 2 tries to replace; still working on wind noise from side windows, way too loud. Magnetic signs damage the paint.
