The car from transmission and radiator hell

So.... to start off my story. I want to say that we have never purchased an explorer new. They have all been used. The first 2002 eddie baur explorer we got had 20,000 and the 2006 one im reviewing had 80,000. So the 2002 explorer we owned had 4 transmissions, and 2 engines. Now, that was not terrible, overall we replaced it because it was getting old. We put 490,000 miles on it. Thats a pretty decent vehicle. However, this 2006 one is getting traded in for something different in late october. We got this car aprox. 2 years ago. Its already had 2 transmission problems, the engine runs hot daily, and the radiator is for $#@&. I am actually scared when I find out that I have to drive out of state for a meeting. Please, I beg of you, do not buy a 2006 explorer. Better yet, don't even buy an explorer. We've had one all my childrens lives and the amount of money we have had to soak into both of them could have gotten me a range rover I could have still had to this day. Also logic wise, the rear climate control is in the front of the car.... I shouldnt have to have my kids tell me when to adjust their air. It should have been placed in the back like every other SUV ever made. My radio lights all went out, dont really know why. Basically to the point, transmissions need to either be lying around in your garage with some radiators or this car just isn't for you.

Wife and I Leased an exact model as the one we have had since 2006. Turned the Leased one in and bought the '06 we have now. Wife has been the primary driver of the vehicle and it just turned over 86,000 miles. The Custom Carpeted Floor Mats were covered with Clear Plastics mats the same day she got it, so the floor mats have never had shoes on them and the ones in the 3rd row have never even feet on them as nobody ever has been in those seats! The Rear Air is mostly used to keep groceries cool while getting them home and after 11 years, blows just as icy cold as the Front Dual Controlled Unit! The Rear Entertainment System is still a good diversion from the heat or when hiding from the Honey Do List! The greatest thing so far is that we STILL have NOT had to replace the Brakes OR Suspension items. Had the Dealership go ahead and do the 100K mile service since the years are causing issues with seal and gaskets, causing lights to come on. Did have to replace the Radiator as the neck just finally gave up. The battery is on its grandson and that is about all for major issues. Had to replace a dead driver's side window motor last year. At this point, we are considering getting a new vehicle and had thought about getting rid of the Explorer BUT, would still need a second vehicle and since we already OWN this one and with gas prices having dropped, it is MORE likely we will just keep it. Have shown the wife every SUV/Crossover on the market, even her beloved Explorers (She has had 3 all together) and while she DOES love the New Explorer, she has become infatuated with the New Edge! Either way, I look forward to keeping this Explorer for a good long time to come! ADED October 26, 2016: STILL have this Explorer. Just turned over 94,000 miles and STILL going strong. Have the original Brakes and Shocks on vehicle and just now starting to look at replacing the shocks at next tire purchase, early next year or when we hit 100,000 Miles. Still a daily driver and has become our only vehicle for the past 7 months. May purchase a new vehicle next year as my wife will be retiring then. Wll keep this Explorer as a back up and a stylish way to go to the Garden shop or Lowes as well as getting around town for the weekly trips. STILL get looks and great comments about the way it looks.....Mostly garaged even at work and when shopping. Wife is torn between a new one and going to a nice coupe or sedan. More to come.

I've experience the following problems in owning this vehicle during the last 7 years; - Paint peeling off of the roof - Leaky cowl seal which leaks rain water into spar plug holes which shorts out the coils, fowls the spark plugs, causing the engine to run rich, overheating the exhaust, warping the exhaust manifolds, breaking the exhaust manifold studs and frying out the catalytic converters. To top it off, the spark plugs get stuck in the head and break off when changing them. - Cracked plastic radiator tank - Transmission leaks when parked on a hill and the fluid level can't be checked or topped off from the engine compartment. - Oxidizing plastic door panels - Bad moon roof switch caused moon roof to open at random and unable to close. - CD's stuck in the changer - Broken e-brake handle - Broken lumbar adjuster

My complaint is to Ford! Why after three (3) radiators being replaced in my 2006 EB Ford Explorer, they never told me they were having trouble with the replacement radiator company! So they kept putting the SAME brand radiator in and charging me labor each time. And AGAIN today, I am facing the same experience! I have been a loyal customer to them....this is the "thank"!

Bought this car used with 14,000 miles on it back in 2008. I have the "Advance Trac" version with the 4.0ltr V6, they were the really base model and I don't see many of them around. They also didn't have the gobs of chrome the other models came with, which means mine has aged pretty gracefully and looks a lot like the more recent Expeditions. It's been garaged kept and I have given it regular recommended maintenance. I have managed to put over 90,000 miles on it since I purchased it, aside from a leaky thermostat housing which I replaced myself at 50,000 miles for about $80 total, it's been a good truck. First I'll start with the negatives. At very low speeds the transmission feels like there is a guy in there with a sledge hammer shifting gears. The back seat is not really that comfortable for adults, it's really sad, I think my 01 2dr Explorer sport had a more comfortable and roomy back seat than my 06 4dr. The motor has a lot of low end torque at low city speeds which is great, but at highway speed the V6 struggles when it comes to passing. I am a pretty easy driver but I can barely coax over 16mpg out of it with a mix of highway and city driving. My car is pretty bare bones and I like it that way, not much to go wrong. AC works great, so does the heat power windows are nice and so is cruise control. Front seat is very comfortable for me and I like the commanding view. Its very torquey on the low end so it does well around town. I've never towed anything but I bet it would do ok at low speeds, I'd hate to take anything heavy on the highway though. For the last 5 years it has been the commuter vehicle for my family, fits two children in the back comfortably and 3 in a pinch. LOTS of room in the trunk for stuff, and believe me I have needed every inch. I don't have the fold flat 3rd row of seats, but I do get some pretty nifty storage compartments under the deck instead. I'm very happy with my Explorer, it's been pretty dependable. I had an 01 Explorer Sport which had over 170,000 miles on it when I got rid of it (still ran well too) so I hope that this one will last as long.

It is a very roomy car. I love the climate control. I have 4 kids. And i pull a trailer with it nearly everyday. I expected my tranny to die young she gets a lot of stress. But overall it has been an amazing car...i have now proudly owned 4 different ford explorers.

Never towed a thing with it and that's probably why I have no trany or radiator issues. Also, garaged in winter. Yeah, a minor radiator leak and I'm watching it! Always had a slightly rough truck "ride". Comfortable front buckets. 2nd seat o.k. but 3rd seat is a "pop-up" rumble seat! Only two complaints: A "glass chin" front grille with no real bumper--not front "crashworthy". Stupid orange dashboard idiot messages. Currently lit: tire pressure sensor and gas cap leak & engine light (for same reason), and no way to turn them off permanently. (Must use reset button.) Both useless "errors" and not major. Otherwise, quite reliable. AC still works. Over 102,000 is a good life span, so far!

I bought the Explorer new and had a thermostat failure that blew coolant all over the engine warping engine parts resulting in $2500 repair. At 70,000 miles started having transmission issues starting with slipping and high revs between gears. Transmission locked up and was replaced. Since then the same slipping issues has caused multiple returns to the shop without resolution. My wife and I like the Explorer design but the engine / transmissions issues make it a nightmare that I would not wish on anyone. This is my last Ford.

I purchased this vehicle at 35k miles. At 40k miles (4 months later) the radiator, thermostat and thermostat housing went bad. $1300 later I was on my way. At 55k miles, after owning the car for 16 months, the enginge had a blown head gasket. At 85k miles, the radiator, thermostat and thermostat housing are bad again. Definitely not something that should go bad again so soon. We'll see how long radiator #3 lasts!

I bought my 06 Explorer (my third one) with only 11,000 miles which now has 82,000 miles. So far I've replaced the radiator twice at a cost of $469.00 a pop. At 65,000 miles the transmission started slamming into reverse. When I put it in reverse now, if it dose not go in gear immediatly, I will shift it into neutral and back into reverse and hope it will gently go into reverse as it should. This helps but I shouldn't have to do this! Now it's hitting hard when it downshifts while stopping. I've owned many Fords over the years and so far I've had to replace seven or eight transmissions. No more transmissions or Fords for me! My son has a 98 Tacoma with 210,000 miles. So long Ford!

I purchased my Explorer used from CarMax over 2 years ago. The clear coat is peeling around the front head lights. The parking brake handle (plastic) broke and the cost to fix is $400.00. Lucky for me, I have an extended warranty from CarMax. The driver's leather seat is cracking. The passenger seat has ripped on the seam. The rear seat holders are split on both ends. Due to ethanol in gas, miles per gallon are poor.

Bought my 2006 XLT used in 2006 with 7K miles. Still have it and now have 87K. I replaced the radiator at 25K, 49K, and 69K. All were covered by factory or extended warranties. I live in CO and when I am up in the mountains going up hill with the car full of family, the transmission will literally shake the car when up shifting into 3rd or 4th gear. It's one of those problems you can't replicate for the dealership though. The driver's side stablizer link just broke and will be replacing this weekend. Outside of the radiator and stabilizer link, I have had no other problems with it.

I'm reluctant to write this review but after the heartache and expensive repairs...I'm compelled to share. I've been a proud fan of the Ford brand for years...and have even sold Ford/Lincoln/Mercury's for two years. With that confidence I purchased a 2006 4x4 Eddie Explorer. Since then I've replaced the radiator twice and now the trans is slipping in drive and reverse. The radiator continues to leak and now the trans drips slowly. There's no place to add trans fluid...must be done at an OEM shop. I can't continue to drive this vehicle. I have a teen driver and will not let her drive this truck for the sincere concern over her safety. Ford do the right thing and recall. Thanks!

Im not sure why all these other people are claiming to have problems because I have never had a single problem! I have owned the car since new and now has 80,000 miles and still runs like new! I will probly have this SUV for a whole lot longer and when I eventually have to get a new car I will absolutely buy Ford again! If you think that cars will never have problems then you are not thinking right. EVERY car will need repairs in its lifetime. THere is no perfect car however I think this explorer is pretty close to perfect.

I purchased my 2006 explorer in 2007 with 19k miles... It looks sharp and performs very well in traffic and on the interstate. Has a sport car feel imo.. however, the radiator started to leak,, then stopped for some time (seems to leak more in the colder months, not at all in the summer months) this happed at about 100k miles. I have also replace both front (wheel hubs), and the CD player. you can purchase an aftermarket radiator on-line for about $125.. much cheaper than the ford one for about 500.. The other design flaw is the Transmission.. I noticed that now 3rd gear was very shaky.. in the shift... hense the tranny is going .. .. at that point I traded the Ford for a GMC.

OK, I feel your pain. The problem with the 06-07 V6 Eddie Bauer edition is the lower brackets that the radiator sits in. They are 1/4 "to far forward, this puts the radiator in a bind. After thermal expansion and contraction the the welds in the core give up. This causes a ever so slight leak in the core. Hard to find at first , but eventually becomes much larger. You lose enough coolant to cause a over heating problem which is hard to detect because the coolant level is dropping ever so slightly. The temperature of the engine is rising at the same rate, along with the transmission, remember the trans is cooled through the same radiator. hot motor, hot trans lube breaks down.

6 radiators Ladies and Gents. You read that correctly - 6 radiators. Averaging about 1 radiator for every 20K miles. I brought a 2006 Explorer for my 16 year old son in 2008 - only had 26K miles on it. We have replaced the radiator 6 times since purchase at $700 a pop. This vehicle is so unreliable that it now sits in my driveway, I can't trust it to be a reliable vehicle for my son, who is now 2 hours away at college. Huge mistake on my part for buying it, huge mistake on Ford's part for not recalling it. BTW, tranny jerks when you shift into reverse.

I went online today to look at transmission costs for my 2006 Explorer and I found this review. I am sitting here feeling a little screwed over right now. I bought the car with less than 20.000 miles on it because I loved my old Expedition which had over 200,000 miles on it. I had no problems with it other than replacing a transmission around 160,000 to be expected. Now,with my Explorer I have had to buy a new radiator (under 100,000 miles), replace a transfer case (under 100,000 miles), and now my transmission is out(120,000). Sadly, these look like common problems. Sorry to say, this is my third Ford and my last one.

I bought this explorer awhile ago and put a lot of miles on it. I have never had a problem with it at all. I always get the regular oil changes, brakes etc. I have had Chryslers and gm vehicles that are completely worthless but so far with all of the Ford products I have purchased, I have been very lucky. This Explorer is great for everything from handling to pulling. Maybe some of the others out there may have been a bad batch or something. So far so good. All 5 Fords that I have owned I have taken over 100,000 miles with no problems at all and I hope this explorer will be the same. I will write another review if it's not.

Our Explorer got warm once . Gauge shot from normal to 3/4 of the way up then went down, then shot almost to the red. I pulled over added water after waiting 45 minutes to cool engine (cool winter night) . There was no more overheating indicated & was driven a few more miles before the engine seized without Any indication of anything wrong . Dealer says piston is fused to block & will cost $ 5,100 for New ford engine, doesn't mention about the cause of the problem, most likely the Manufacturer Defective Radiator or the Head Gasket is to blame from my research on this Model/Year (06/07) of Ford. Transmission is sure to go out soon I fear

In May 2006 I purchased a 2006 Ford Explorer brand new with only 56 miles. Two years into the owning the suv I had to replaced the tires with a new set. The sensor belt broke on one of the tires and the tire pressure light in the suv wouldn't go off. Then I began to experience problems with shift it was stuck in park as the recall letter describe the problems I had already experienced. Then my trans- mission went out. I paid to have the trans- mission replaced. Six months later the radiator and the motor went out. I contacted FORD, I towed my suv to the nearest dealer-ship where I left it for a year; because I refuse to pay for repairs and Ford refuse to take liability for my suv.

Loved it until last week at 60k miles it takes me forever to shift into reverse. Then once in reverse it feels like I was rear ended. Now it shifts hard while going down the hwy. A little ticked that Ford refuses to acknowledge the transmission issue the explorers are having. Guess that what I get for buying American!

I bought my Explorer with 18000mi. in Feb of 09'. Thought I was in heaven till the engine started making a hideous noise, pulled off highway, dash went red and car shut off! Has 42,212 miles, Ford will not make good on this. Again, they say they've never heard of this! I think it's time for the Attorney General's office to step in. No warning of this! They tell me it's a maintenance issue. I also have a 96' Explorer with 257000 miles that my son is now driving! I seem to have maintained that without a problem! Been driving Ford for 26 years! How 'bout something for loyalty? Anything but this. There is a $5,680 price tag on a new engine and radiator. Really Ford? Quality is not job one.

2006 Ford Explorer From what i am reading it looks like our 2006 explorers are having radiator problems. I got the truck new in 2006 and in less then 1 year had to have the radiator replaced. the 2nd radiator is starting to give me problems now at about 40k miles. i notice my recovery tank getting low on coolant. I don't see any leaks but i can smell it. I took it to the dealer for a pressure test but they say they can't find a problem. Over all i don't have any other problems so far with the truck. I was at a Lowe's store and i parked my explorer next to another explorer. I asked the owner if his was a 2006 and if he had any problems. he said yes a 2006 and the radiator was replaced

*Contact Ford about your BAD RADIATOR! I have a 2006 Ford Explorer and I have had the same "bad radiator" experience that many other people have posted about. At 45,000 miles it started to leek and finally began to separate from the vehicle. I wrote a letter to Ford about the problem and they sent a letter back to me with a number to call. I called and spoke with a representative who took down all of my info, she told me if they get enough complaints they will post a recall and we can get a reimbursement for the repairs we had to pay for. If you haven't already contacted them, do it!

It will surge at slow speeds while going forward or reverse. Now at 41,000 miles the radiator has sprung a leak. The dealer says this is the first they have heard of explorers having radiator problems. A fun thing to do is when you see someone with a 2006 explorer ask them if they have replaced the radiator yet. You get a surprised look and an answer like "how did you know?"

Thank God for the extended warranty. 3 radiators, 1 A/C, shifter column, back windshield motor, tire sensor, and 4 other problems later I'm done with Ford. Several problems lurking too (transmission, 4 wheel drive). This vehicle is a piece of junk after 20,000 miles. Too bad cause I like the styling. Trading it in soon for a 4Runner. I purchased my 06 Ford Explorer brand new off of the lot in Sept 06. Around 38K miles I had a radiator leak. I called Ford corporate and to no avail they would not negotiate with me on the radiator since it was out of the 30K warranty. Several months later while attempting to get out of my driveway, the gearshift was stuck in park. After an hour I was able to get it, but after that the transmission would shift horribly from Park into reverse. I took it to the dealer and told them that it had to be because of the sticking gearshift (that was recalled) only to be told that that transmission needed to be partially replaced. I'm at 68K miles and I refuse to replace the transmission on a 3.5 year old car.

I purchased the truck brand new, I brought the truck in for Recall (shift Plate) very difficult to shift, I told them I was having a hard shift jolt when putting it in reverse like being rearended. They told me they couldn't find the problem, they put in a new PCM. (new computer) after the new PCM they stated there still was no answers for the transmission problem. I asked if it had anything to do with the recall they said no! I didn't understand how they could say that if they didn't know what the problem was? anyway they asked if they could pull the transmission for $600 and then they would call me and let me know what damage needed to be repaired. I declined to pay $600 for a diagnostic.

I bought the explorer with about 17,000 miles 3 years ago. At approximately 34,000 miles the radiator sprung a leak. While the dealer was fixing the leak they broke 2 instrument clusters. Just this week the radiator started leaking again. The dealership stated it would be at least $1,000.00 to fix it. After complaining to the dealership they said they will help with some of the costs. Ford needs to step up and do something about this radiator problem. I am a huge Ford fan and I have owned numerous ford vehicles, but this is the most disappointed I have been with a Ford vehicle.

Great all around car. Have a few complaints about the fuel economy, but it's a SUV so what do you expect. Not too many problems, only a few weird sounds here and there. I'm a 16 year old guy and it gets me and my friends here, there and then some. I love the room it has, and the stock sound system. The performance is great for big SUV with a V6. Looks great too. Everyone that rides in it loves it, and I do too. Great buy. Consider this instead of a car.

I bought this Explorer in 12/08 with only 20k miles and it was in pristine shape inside & out. Around 30k miles, I noticed that it would occasionally shift hard into reverse and finally took it in a month ago at 40k miles after reading many of these posts. Needless to say they had to rebuild the tranny, luckily it was under the drivetrain warranty. At 35k miles I replaced the radiator, which appears to be another huge issue with this model. As soon as the warranty is up, this thing is destined for sale or trade.

I have had plenty of Explorers but my 2006 limited was final purchase for awhile and the plan was to "drive it till the wheels fall off," I am not a heavy driver. My commute to work is about 20 miles total. I took the Explorer in for service after the second year of owning it. I was told I had "cracked hoses" and that was why my fluids leaked. I mentioned all the complaints that I saw on the internet with radiators, the ford garage did not know of any "problems." They fixed it and then the next summer it was leaking again. I was told that was "normal" in the summer and was talked out of making an appointment. Just after 36,000 miles I was then told my radiator was shot.

Here is the issue..bought new 2006 Ford Explorer; thought I'd buy American; big big mistake; numerous mechanical problems latest is the transmission. (Numerous problems with Radiator has leak-could be another $1,000.) Dealer advises could be low of $1,700- $3,000. to repair/replace. Many Internet sites from buyers suggest this is a manufacturing defect; some suggest the updated operating software could have helped; both for the trans and the radiator. SUV has only 29,000 miles on it; check the internet 100's of problems with the transmission. Ford consumer services really doesn't care. I will never buy a Ford product again. I am shopping foreign SUVs now.

At this current time my Ford 2006 Explorer XLS is at the service department at the purchase dealership. This time it was returned for the recall on and having too heavily accelerate when in reverse and especially in drive. They think it maybe an engine or transmission problem at (108000 miles). The joke is the transmission is sealed and must be returned to the service department for servicing and of course money. Also, the radiator has been replaced twice. I am very afraid to maintain this vehicle due to the current and previous mechanical problems. This vehicle is American Made but it’s a heap of joke and I wonder was it assembled on Monday or Friday.

Bought this 2006 Limited V-8 with 32,000 miles to replace a 1996 Isuzu Trooper. The Explorer has great styling both inside and out, three rows of seats with power folding third row. Plenty of interior room, with lots of leg room in the second row. Good visibility, with a straight hood, so you can see the front corners of the vehicle. The ride is very smooth with the independent rear suspension, and interior quiet at highway speeds. I did purchase a extended warranty for three years/thirty-six thousand miles. Recently had a run through the snow with slippery road conditions. The automatic 4WD worked great, but also tried the "manual" 4WD option. No problems either. Overall, great!

I have had a bad experience so far with the vehicle. Radiator problems started 10000 miles after owning! Major complaint is that I took it into the dealership (Hoffman Ford, Harrisburg PA) without leaks from the radiator, then they ran there pressure test, and all of sudden the leak appears out of no where gushing out the bottom. Now I looked over the radiator several times over a few weeks and didn't see a leak, in fact they didn't either when I had to them a few months ago, it was a hose at that time. But the smell persisted so I took it back. Bottom line, they performed another pressure test and now its costing me $1000 to have it fixed. What an insult!

Bought this for my wife last year with 50,xxx. Two weeks later had radiator leak. Lucky the dealership replaced radiator at no charge. Here it is less then a year later and radiator is leaking once again. Again lucky the radiator that got replaced had a 1yr warranty. Turns out 2006/2007 4.0L explorers have a tech service bulletin for a PCM (Power Train Module) update calibration. If you have a 2006 Explorer, Mountaineer or 2007 Sport Trac I would get this updated before you have to replace a radiator if you haven't already. This TS bulletin was released 5/4/2009 so just a heads up to anyone having trouble with radiators leaking. $100 for software update or $$$$ for a new radiator.

I’m a huge Ford fan; however Ford didn’t get it right with the Explorer. Take for example my 2007 F-150, I love it. The Explorer isn’t up to par with the European or Japanese SUVs as far as fit and finish and probably reliability. With 40K M to date, the follow have been replaced: gear shifter, heater valve, alternator, & Nav system fixed. The vehicle has lots of interior plastic too. The ride is harsh for 4 wheel independent suspension. Visibility is poor. There are big side blind spots and with the 3rd row head rests up, it’s poor out the back too. The trans off the line hesitates/sluggish (been reflashed). Steering at slow speed is heavy. I’m not a big fan of the interior door handles.

I now understand why there are so many Explorers on the road -it is simply amazing. For a vehicle that is physically 4 years old (the build date is 2005), it still drives and handles like it just came from the factory. It drives like a big marshmallow - you rarely feel anything on the road, and I have yet to have an issue with it. Mileage wise I average 18.8- 19.1 MPG weekly. It's just a great truck, and after driving a money pit Mazda Tribute for years, its a welcome relief.

I have had two problems, a failed radiator(which is fairly common with this Explorer) and both my power outlets failed. All was covered under warranty. I love the high seating position and it's nice when travelling. The cabin is very capacious with the seats folded down. I have saved so much money when buying large items that previously would have required paying for delivery. This is my first Ford and my first SUV. It tows loads well (up to 8,000#) gets excellent mpg on the highway (24-25mpg) and can squeeze in many adults and kids. I had the hesitation problem as others but it was very intermittent. I get the high rpm shift sqeak off of the accessory drive. Dealership acts like they are normal and does quick fixes (don't work). Well, they missed a few things... almost immediatly we noticed a hesitation when accelerating on the highway, but it was rare and never presented when we took it to the shop. Over the last month it was more frequent and this week when we took it in they said the transmission needed to be replaced. While working on it, they also found the radiator has a leak and will need to be replaced. This is a 3 year old truck with 55,000 miles! Not what we expected from Ford.

I purchased my SUV with 40000 miles. I now have about 72000 miles and have had nothing but good luck with it. Although the gas mileage is a little lower than I'd like, I bought an SUV, so I'm not going to complain. No problems with the power train, electronics, or anything else with the mechanics. The only problem has been with the front driver's seat comfort. A large person must have owned it prior to me and mashed out the seat, which I didn't notice until I sat for a longer drive.

Year 1: gear shifter replaced. Dash electronics went nuts and computer needed to be reset. Year 2: rear shocks blew out (I have a 4 mile commute!) Exhaust hose blew and fuel filter resembled that of a car with 100k miles. Both replaced. Currently in the shop because the transmission feels like it is ready to drop. Car has 24k miles.

Bought my Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer when it was just 2 years old. I've had it for 9 1/2 months and am on the 6th radiator! Yes, you heard correctly...even a reputable Ford auto shop can not find the source of the problem. So the radiator keeps getting replaced and every 1-2 months (this time it was literally only a matter of 1 week!)...it ends up leaking radiator fluid everywhere, overheating and roaring/not running properly. This was the worst purchase I've ever made and now I fell totally stuck. I HATE this car and will NEVER EVER EVER buy Ford again...Nothing but a big hassle, headache, money pit and inconvenience.

I have had this vehicle going on almost 3 years and love it! First, the negatives. The first year I owned it I had the 4WD motor and shifter replaced. During the second year, I experienced the common "clunk" when starting from rest or moving slowly then pressing on the gas. Initially, dealer replaced faulty transmission part and re-flashed computer. Computer had to be re-flashed again recently to totally fix the problem. All covered under warranty. Now the positives. The cabin is ultra quiet when driving highway speeds of 65 mph or more. Lots of cargo space, decent performance, and very comfortable seats on long trips. Best mid-sized SUV out there IMO!

We are a Ford family...have 4 of them. My next vehicle will not be a Ford. I have had nothing but one problem after another with my Explorer from day one it seems. Blinkers and tail lights have gone out repeatedly and had to be replaced, dealership would have done it at no charge if I wanted to leave it all day to have a bulb replaced. Gear shift locks up, take it in and they aren't sure how to fix it even though it's a known issue with Explorers. Now my radiator is leaking. Glad it's under warranty, thinking I ought to just trade it in before that changes or it will cost me a fortune.

I think this vehicle sums up why Amrican auto industry is going down. I have 2008 BMW 335i convertible. I bought this Explorer for cold/snowy winter days. What a mistake! Interior is nothing but dollar store hard plastic which starts peeling after a while. Handling is a nigthmare. Original tires are a joke. This type of handling from $38000 vehicle is unacceptable. After I replaced the tires with Michelins and added 1 inch wheel spacers to front and rear, handling got little better. But nothing drives me more crazy than the wind noise at highway speeds. Once you are over 70mph, it is impossible to have normal conversation. New tires eliminated the road noise but wind noise is redicilious

I bought this truck at just under 19,000 miles in April 2008. We had upgraded from a Toyota Corolla because our family was growing. We love everything about this truck! It's stylish, roomy (7 passengers), handles extremely well (Overdrive kicks in great when needed). Everyone has nothing but good things to say about it. It's perfect for my family of 5 with lots of room for baby's XL stroller and the kids' bags. I hope the next few years are good to me since this is my first major vehicle purchase. So far so good!

I sought out this vehicle mainly because reading about all of the problems with the V8/6spd auto combo problems. I bought this for my wife and I drive a BMW 3-series. If you need a utility that is a little of everything, this is your vehicle. I read reviews criticizing this vehicle because it is no hot rod. It is a box on wheels! The acceleration with the V6 is more than adequate, unless you are towing (which will do not). The limited trim as all the goodies and a ton of cargo space. The main reason we bought this vehicle is that it has adjustable pedals, adjustable seat belts, a tilt wheel and power seat, which is wonderful for my wife who is 5 feet tall. This vehicle is terrific!

Had issues right after I drove it off the lot, but the dealer fixed everything. No problems since, other than a rear window not operating. That's minor to me. I can't believe a closeable outside air vent is an upgrade on a $35k + vehicle. Didn't know that nugget until after I bought the car. I have asthma and love other cars' exhaust and pollen streaming into the car at all times. As a result of outside air at all times, the defroster, heating, and AC take more time to get up/down to temperature. Front defrosters are horrible. External audio/video inputs in the ceiling mount DVD is annoying, especially with cables dangling.

Honeymoon period was over too quickly. Although I love driving it--great pick- up at start up and highway--the problems soon began. Electrical malfunctions: Windows, power seats get stuck when adjusting, a/c sometimes dose not turn on, etc. But the worst-- the transmission. The transmission rises to 2 revolutions and revs there all by itself. It gets stuck in 2nd, and I often (more often lately)have to pull over. Car also turned off (at 25 mph) while driving and all functions were stuck--very scarey when steering and brakes don't work! Technicians finally reparied after three weeks-- say it can happen with any car. I don't buy that.

I bought a used 2006 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer in March 2008. I have had it at the dealership five times. I've had the shifter replaced and the whole fan assembly for the heat and air. I have had an ongoing problem with a loud noise coming from under the dash when I first take off. Overheard the mechanic telling the service guy that its a vacuum problem and its because of the design. Now it won't start, the road slippery light comes on and stays on even when driving on dry pavement. It also shifts hard and jerks when taking off. This is my third Explorer. I will NEVER buy one again.

I bought my Explorer with 18K miles on it. It is 4x4, Eddie Bauer edition and the v-6. I was sold on it the minute I sat in it. Great interior, very comfortable and well laid out. I'm not crazy about the speedometer and tach layout. They sometimes seem to be in a hole, but a minor issue. It rides and drives great and will get 21 mpg or so on the highway. City is about 16. Great factory stereo, great A/C, rides like a Lincoln.

Purchased from a dealership last year, and so far no problems, other than a tire sensor indication. This SUV drives like a dream. No sudden jerking as far as acceleration; very smooth ride. I like the fact that it's equipped with a 5-speed automatic transmission, and a middle console transmission gear shift, a very first for the explorer family. Gas mileage is really good for a normal SUV's; I drove up to 25 mpg with a 65- 70 mph speed. Very nice interior! A/C system is really good front and back. Has great exterior lighting, especially the front headlights and fog lights. Definintely recommend the explorer to anyone who desires a SUV. As long as you treat it well, it'll drive well.

I bought my truck new in 2006, needing a 4wd family vehicle (traded my '94 Cobra for it). The only problem I've had is my manual lumbar support breaking twice. The transmission problem everyone is talking about is solved with a simple trip to the dealer to get the transmission reprogrammed. Problem fixed!!! It gets about 14.5 mpg in the city and 21.9 on the hwy at hwy speeds. if you drive aggressively though, expect it to be worse. We've driven across the country and it's very comprortable for me and my family. The V8 is powerful enough to haul a trailer and get into traffic with ease, and sits at 2k rpm on the hwy. Have a light foot in the city and get respective mpg there too.

I bought it used with 59963 miles on the odo for $16500. No problems so far. Replaces an 07 4Runner which was totalled in a crash. I didn't feel like spending another 30 grand on a 4Runner so I went with the cheaper Ford. This is my weekend vehicle. Mon thru Fri I use my much more economical Camry. Didn't realize it was a 4x4 til I took it home and saw the buttons on the dash, neither did the salesman, oh well. Overall, a decent family vehicle which fits nicely in my garage, but the 4Runner was lighter and got better gas mileage and overall felt a tad more refined.

The dealer was great and I'm glad I got the extended warranty. The 18' chrome rims look great. I've previously had Pilots - not as nice looking but far more reliable. I am impressed with the ride and how quiet it is at highway speeds.

We live in Germany everyone told me not to buy a Ford because the engines can't take it. I drive it over 100 mph almost everyday the engine has held on great have had no problems at all not even a leak the engine still looks like the day I picked it up at the port. I get an oil change almost every other month. The only issue is a speaker in the passenger side rear door blew a few months ago. Other than that everythings great! Plenty of room and comfortable. This is the worst Ford I have ever owned. 27000 miles and numerous problems. The radiator is leaking and they will now have to replace it. The chrome grill is bubbling, and Ford dealer says its not covered on warranty. (HMMM! Defective part not covered) There was an obnoxious vibration (Rattle) in the steering wheel. The dealer said there was an advisory out on that. They must replace the lower steering rod. The other things I dislike: The gas mileage sucks. I should have kept my 2005 v8 4wd F150. My F150 got about the same MPG and had way more power than this hunk of crap. There is no heated mirrors! Every car has them now. No XM radio. Get with the times already. All in all don't buy a Ford

This is the fourth Ford Explorer we have owned. It is by far the worst!!! Extremely poor fuel economy. 7-9mpg in winter, and maybe 13mpg in the summer. Dealership, cant seem to figure the problem out, and isn't fixed yet. Also, don't ever get rear ended, because there isn't much of a bumper. Its all plastic. I don't like the RSC system either. I don't like the fact you cant over-ride the system when needed. It leaves you completely handi-capped in the deep snow. The vehicle is a little sluggish on the take off.

This was our 8th consecutive Ford vehicle, and will probably be our last. Overall, this SUV had the potential to be a great vehicle, but an awful interior design and numerous quality issues ruined it. The 4.0L engine and 5-speed trans are terrific. Body style, ride, handling, etc. all very good. Excellent for moderate towing - we towed a boat and dual snowmobile trailer. The interior is awful. Poor hiproom, inaccessible parking brake release, stupid/awkward door pulls. Experienced following failures: broken lumabar mechanism, 4wd motor failed, PB release failed, engine failed to start, shift lever locked in park. Ford botched an otherwise decent vehicle.

Even with our NE Winters - it is just too much truck for me. I keep reading about the transmission - does that explain why is has rolled on my 3 times! We have driven #xplorers for 10 years and 5 models. The combination of a frame for trailering, the independent suspension, roomy, quick V8, three row seating fit the niche. Smallest SUV that can accompish the tasks of a bigger SUV. The mileage is 15/20. The handling/ride has improved. We did crack the stability control cog on the axle by hitting a curb. Seemed strange since the wheel was fine but the axle cog broke. Had the tranny fixed. Same issue as everyone else but a quick resolution. The engine was reflashed for better response (nice improvement) and the belt assembly replaced to fix a high rpm shift squeek. Overall if you want a refined and real SUV that is not too big this is it

Very underpowered with the V6 engine. Can barely keep up with traffic and must drive in the right lane w/ a/c on as it kills the engine power. Interior quality is poor. All four of my door arm rests are chipping and peeling and the dealer claims this is normal. I'm going to do take Ford up on their advice and swap my ride for a Toyota 4Runner. When ever you see a potential stop coming just roll up to it. I used to get 14 MPH (locally) now I'm up to 17.5 MPH by changing my driving habits. It jumps to over 20 MPH on highway trips.

First at 3200 miles I had to have the trans reprogramed not to big of a deal but the trans should not be slipping at all especially at 3000 miles. Second the passenger door was making the squeeks the the domestics are know again. I emphasize at less than 5000 miles. Build quality is up to snuff with the imports. It a far better car than the one it replaced. The other enormous draw back is the resale. I own a 2006 and payed about 24000 and is now woth about eleven.

This is the worst vehicle I've ever owned. This Explorer was actually at the dealer for warranty tranny repair for 7 consecutive weeks! It was a problem with Ford and the dealer, and no one ever returned my calls. I tried Customer Care at Ford and their response were "what can we do for you?" And they did nothing! I am dealing with a lawyer now to try and resolve this. The vehicle would surge forward at the end of a stop, enough that you could spill your drink or, if not wearing a seatbelt, do more damage. I was told that this is just a charcteristic of the "first in class" 6 speed transmission.

I've had this truck for ten months and 9,500 miles. We upgraded from an '02 Escape XLT. Gas mileage is poorer, but we knew that going in. I love the way it drives, handles, and accelerates. I like the way the interior looks. Plenty of room for the family camping trips. Hubby doesn't like the interior door handles, but they're just fine with me. I bought the dark stone color. It's not actually one color though, sometimes it's brown, sometimes it's gray. In my driveway it can even look a bit green. I do a lot of stop and go driving and get about 15 mpg.

I now have 18,000 miles and here comes the transmission clunk (at slow speeds) everyone is talking about. Not sure what to do as it sounds like everyone is getting the big blow off from Ford. This is my third Explorer and yes it is quiet. The glare from the dash however is life threatening and I hope Ford's attorneys are prepared. The only help has been to put on one of those white-trash dash covers....really classy! It's no secret about the door handles and gas mileage. Ride was very nice at first, now after a year feeling each bump! Also if quality is job one, then how about a five or seven year warranty?

We purchased this car brand new and under "d" plan as my uncle worked at the dealership. The motor has great power and the car has a nice smooth quiet ride. Ergonomics are good with the exception of the door handles and it was an overall fun SUV to drive. Then after a few months the transmission troubles began. This SUV has a learning transmission that is supposed to optimize itself for your driving style. This feature has learned only how to hesitate while accelerating and bang, clunk and sometimes accelerate during braking to a stop. After many service attempts and getting regional reps invloved Ford now says its a "normal condition" Not happy with this at all!

Quiet, comfortable, powerful, and solid. Surprised at the great handling on curves, and the tight turning radius. Competes well with our Acura MDX! Engine runs smooth and quiet. Can barely feel the tranny shift, even when kicking in the on-the- fly full-time 4-wheel drive system. Comfortable steering wheel with redundant audio, HVAC, and speed controls keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road!

Love the looks of my truck. Love the way it performs out on the highway. Not happy with the way the leather looks dirty and I have to keep cleaning. Hate the way it takes off when the engine is cold. Hate the way it shifts gears. Hate the way it drives slow in the parking lot. Hate the way it takes off after downshifting. If the transmission worked correctly, and the leather upholstery would stay looking new, I would have no complaints.

From the purchase, have been disappointed with the performance of slow take-offs and rough shift changes. Takes off great if you really step on it, but easing around a parking lot is embarrassing. We have nicknamed the truck, "Hoppin' John". Have taken it back to the dealer three times without satisfaction.

Compared to our '99, it seems Ford had to change some things just for the sake of change. What's improved: very quiet, great ride, all seats very comfortable, dual zone A/C, reclining 2nd row seat, rear HVAC controls. Should have been left as they were: door pulls, memory seat and heated seat controls (now on the console and not convenient), 2nd row headrest non- adjustable and non-removable(interferes with child seat), side mirrors (clunky looking and do not have full range of travel), console shifter (I'd rather use the space for storage), dash design. Some complaints here about dash reflections with the tan interior. This is easily solved with a dark color dash cover.

Bought a year and a half ago now with 30k miles. Beautiful riding truck, quiet, handles well, very comfortable. Traction control works seamlessly. Have had lots of problems with 6 speed tranny (bangs into gear really hard). Ford reprogrammed module with no improvement. Basically told thats the way it is. I am afraid that rather than fixing it, they are just sticking a band aid on the problem with the knowledge that by the time it falls off it will be off warranty. Have looked into trading in but the resale value is so poor I'm not willing to take the loss. Some quirky interior features (door releases) but you know this going in. Would love this truck if not for the seemingly unfixable transmission.

I planned to buy a Ford Freestyle in 2006. However, when I went to the dealership, I had a chance to compare Freestyle and Explorer. After test driving of Explorer, I changed my mind. I bought it that day. Several months since I bought it, I love it more and more. It is great fun to drive it. I should say the Explorer is perfect in every aspect. Every time when I sit in my Explorer, I feel safe. I have also tested Toyota 4 Runner, Honda Pilot. Compared to the Explorer, they are not fun. I will buy Explorer again and again.

The build quality on this vehicle is excellent. It's as good as any Japanese. I've driven this in the city and on the highway and it is very comfortable. The storage is huge. I've had this long enough and put on enough miles to really be able to tell anyone interested in buying a Ford Explorer, that for the money you can't go wrong. Ford is really dealing on these. I researched Ford, Nissan, Toyota, Honda, GMC, and Chevy. The Ford pulls more weight then the rest. All this comfort, looks and it pulls 7200 lbs. Great for pulling a boat or trailer, and it's much cheaper, even the Limited, then most.

We had been shopping for an SUV for months. My wife and I are typically GM buyers, but for this go around if one of the big three fit our needs the best than that's what we'd get. For the money and bang for the buck it's really hard to beat what you get out of the Explorer. The third row seat option is nice and with our planning to start a family next year, the crash test ratings are very important. Ford did a great job with the makeover. I can't believe how quiet this thing is. As far as gas mileage goes, I'm not sure why that's such a big complaint. You're just not going to get sedan type mileage out of an suv. If mileage was such an issue then it's best to stick with the 30mpg sedans.

While I liked our '02 Eddie Bauer OK, I thought the styling had gone to the "plain" side compared to the '96 we used to have. Our new '06 has the best of both - a better ride, better handling and more power than either, and a return to the looks that caused us to buy an Explorer in the first place. Just completed a 3800 mile round trip through the Southeast, and could not have been more pleased. Mileage was around 19, which we expected for the V8, performance was superb in all weather conditions, and comfort was fantastic. For the folks not buying an Explorer because of the mileage, figure out your cost per year for miles driven in each type, then decide if the difference is worth it. (YES).

My wife and I have been looking for an SUV for the past several months. We found that the Explorer had the best bang for the buck for a midsize and the 3rd row seat option is very nice. For the price we couldn't beat it and we've been a GM family for years. We were most impressed with how comfortable and quiet the ride actually is. I'm not sure why people who complain about the interior still bought one anyway? Why spend the money on something you don't like? We love the new interior styling. It was a selling point for us.

This is my third Explorer and is the worst due to really bad design. Chrome trim around the instrument panel produces so much glare in the windshield that it is both distracting and dangerous. Read the car reviews online and notice that all of them complain about the terrible glare problem. Ford was supposed to fix this safety problem but has done nothing. This trim is on all models so you can not avoid it. My recommendation is to not buy an Explorer until this major design flaw is fixed. The glare affects every minute of driving and becomes worst in cloudy/rainy situations.

I purchased Explorer Limited in 3/2006. In the 6 months I have owned it, it has been at the dealer for repairs 6 times (1 1/2 months). First it was the transmission. Then it was the cooling sensors that are supposed to prevent the engine from overheating. I was driving 70 mph on the highway when it just turned off. I lost power steering and almost ran other cars off the road while trying to maintain control. Since then it has been in & out of the dealership with cooling sensor issues. It doesn't turn on if it is cold out. I have been stranded 4 times, missed hours of work, and feel unsafe in the car. Ford doesn't stand behind product, Now must go through lemon law process which takes months. Buyers beware!

This is my fourth SUV purchase with Ford. I bought the Eddie Bauer V6 fully loaded with all the great bells and whistles. It drives so smoothly and it is very comfortable. It feels like you are driving a Mercedes sedan. It has great space and can comfortably seat 6 adults. It has the 3rd row back seats for those with larger families. I am glad that I took advantage of the great pricing and rebates that Ford offered. My only complaint is that the gas mileage on SUV's is not all that great. If you are looking for a great affordable, and reliable vehicle take a look at this.

Lumbar support driver seat broke twice, still not fixed right; rear driver side window inoperable, transmission will not shift out of park more than half of the time when brake pedal is depressed. Fuel economy no better than my former Durango V8 5.9 liter. Gas pedal is too small and foot slips off. I am stuck in this thing for several years; can not afford loss of value to sell now.

That was also a great vehicle with absolutely no problems! This one, a "06" EB Explorer, (the kids are all grown) has to be one of the best designed on the market, we feel almost like were flying an airplane when sitting in the driver's seat. All the controls are at your finger tips and the ride is exceptional for an SUV. Ford sure beats the Chevys we have owned in the past. We are faithful with our service and exceed the manufacturers recommendations but could not keep transmissions in the GM SUV's.

I have put 6000 miles on my 06 XLT V-8 4WD. I will start with the statement "It is the quietest vehicle I have ever driven." Inside the cab, it is virtually silent. I can't even hear the rumble of the V-8, or the hum of the highway. Sometimes you have to check the tach to see if it's running at a stoplight. The interior is great, except the shifter on the console versus the column, and the wiper/headlight all-in-one stalk. The only performance complaint I have is gas mileage. I am getting 9-11 mpg in city and 12-13 mpg on the freeway. I think there may be something wrong, but the engine sounds great. Overall I highly recommend, if only the gas mileage was better.

The stereo with 6 disc and sub-woofer has amazing sound for a factory stereo system. I was impressed. The door handles have gotten a lot of flack in reviews I have read on here, but I find them kind of neat. The only complaint so far (had the truck 2 weeks now) is GAS MILEAGE! UGH! This 2006 Explorer is a fun drive, smooth ride and a nice solid vehicle. Great for long trips. We got the captains seats for the second row - very comfortable and storage is convenient. So far with about 7,000 miles on it our highway mileage is at about 21 mpg. Not bad for the solid build of the car and the great get up and go of the V6 engine. So far so good, but our past experience with the Ford Explorer has been at 3 to 4 years old, lots of things start going wrong. Hopefully Ford has improved the reliability as well as the look. Needless to say, we leased this one for two years. Time will tell.... Still happy we chose the Ford Explorer. Love all the improved safety features, too!

The ride is better, interior comfort is better, and the build quality is much superior. There are some quirky features on the interior that you have to put up with, but I understand that some of these (the door handles for one) will be corrected on the '07. I love everything about this new Explorer however I do feel there are some improvements that need to be made. 1st the headrests in the middle seat aren't so bad but the 3rd row when the seats are up need to be down to see out the back. 2nd the door pulls are too low. I do like how heavy the doors are makes it feel more sturdy. We love the reverse sensing system. The gas mileage could be improved. I traded a 05 Ford Ranger that I was able to get 30+ mpg on highway. I'm getting 22 average on the highway, big difference. Very simple to use and program. Our eight year old was able to operate the rear DVD with a short lesson from the salesman. She thinks it "rocks" I do not see the big deal about placement of the door handles. We got used to them right away. Power with the V8 is great. The mileage is about 16 which is not bad for a engine which is not broken in yet. We are also very impressed with all the safety features. With the current rebates, we received a great deal.

This is my first American SUV purchase, and so far so good. I like the looks both interior and exterior, but Ford, what were you thinking about for the door handles and pulls? I've nick-named them doork handles. Great cargo space, 3rd row seat is nice. Very quiet, smooth and responsive ride. This truck gives the driver good feedback from the road - something I only got from Japanese SUV's in the past. Wife owned a '94 sport when we got married and I couldn't dump that one fast enough, but it looks like the '06 is a winner with the ride and safety improvements.

We just bought our 3rd Eddie Bauer Explorer loaded with lots of great features: new Nav system, luxurious interior, memory seats (heated), fantastic smoother quieter ride. But the key selling point for me is the door number unlock panel! Never do I look for my keys. They are locked inside the car. As a gal who frequently changes her purses & often wears skirts without pockets, this door unlock system was just what I needed and the main reason that we keep returning to our Explorer Eddie Bauers. Take a look at the impressive new front grill/headlight design on the new 2006 models, a classy SUV. Only negative is a no brainer, we'd all like to see better gas mileage.

Traded in a 2002 4Runner to get the new Explorer. Never looked back. Great interior space--my dogs love it-- and the Audiophile sound system is better than anything I've heard from the factory. Ride and handling is great, almost no body lean or roll during cornering and power is outstanding. Got the V8, it's worth the extra money and the gas. Interior is a little strange looking; the dash is kind of lumpy and the materials look cheaper than they probably are. But fit and finish seem good, and it's super quiet. Would recommend the Explorer to anyone looking for a new SUV--and the dealership has been awesome.

I loved my Ford Windstar and didn't think I would want to drive a "big" SUV, but a move to wintry climate area changed my mind. I love the way it handles, the very smooth ride and the strong engine. The interior is roomy, comfortable and very quiet. The fold down rear seats are very easy to manipulate and it provides lots of cargo room in the five passenger mode. For a five member family it was a great choice.

This is my 4th Explorer since 1995. My most recent was a 2002 and the 2006 is much more comfortable. The ride and drive is really outstanding. Very tight feeling. The 4.0 l V6 is very impressive as well. Great torque. We just downsized from our 2003 Expedition and have no regrets whatsoever.

I have owned my 2006 Explorer for 2 months now. I was impressed from the first time I drove the car. I was amazed that a body on frame "truck" could be so quiet, smooth and effortless to drive. This rides better and is quieter that the Lexus SUVs I have tried. Yet there is plenty of power with a nice growl from the V8 when needed. I have had seven adults fit comfortable in it. Even the 6 foot guy in the 3rd row said it was surprisingly roomy. I was aware of the unusual door pulls before I looked at the car and despite my concerns I don't even notice them now. I have had no problems with the fit, finish and quality of the construction so far. This is by far the best SUV I have owned.

I love my Sasha XLT. I traded my junk '04 for the wonderful '06 and couldn't be more happier. I was a little nervous especially since my junk '04 were giving me many problems. The ride is much smoother, the seats are very comfortable, love the new look inside and out. I got the moon roof, leather seats, no third row, 6 disc, adjustable pedals and reverse sensor. I was upside down on my junk '04 Explorer but am now happy that I made the decision because I love my new '06. I just order custom design floor mats to go with the new interior. I can't wait until the summer when I can ride and be noticed from down the road in this beauty!

Driving this vehicle is like driving a big sports car. Very powerful and responsive. The engine is VERY smooth when idling. The cloth seats are firm and comfortable with good lower back support. The door handle takes a little getting used to. There are 2 minor glitches that I will take care of soon. Overall, it is one fabulous SUV and I hope it will stay like this for a long time to come.

We LOVE our new Explorer! It's solid, very quiet, and very versatile which is good when you have 2 small boys. Power from the V6 is good, not excellent, and we have no problems traversing the long steep hills of Western PA. It's no sports car but it does handle very well for its size and even seems to handle better than the Escape it replaced. The thing I can't get over is how quiet it is inside and what a great highway cruiser it is. It's almost limo-like! The DVD system has a few too many buttons but once you learn them you realize that they are there for added convenience. Overall the '06 Explorer isn't great at any one thing but it is very good at everything.

Having owned a 2004 Explorer, the 2006 changes proved to be a step backward. Changes to the interior door handles are not intuitive, the dash is busy, I've counted as many as 20 separate plastic pieces. The change in the tailgate from the split tailgate to the liftglass makes it much more difficult to load anything without opening the entire tailgate. The movement of the shift lever from the column to the floor eliminated a lot of storage space. The gas mileage on my 4.0L 2004 consistently ran 20 - 21 mpg in highway driving. So far the 2006 is giving me 17 - 17.5. I hope this improves with added mileage. All in all a disappointment.

I work for Ford and I drive a Ford. I really love this SUV. Traded in an Escape, which I loved as well. The interior is wonderful. Doesn't get good gas mileage but then what can you expect with a large SUV. It handles great, has many options. The car handles well, has sufficient power. The stereo system could be a lot better. The DVD is great. I really like the seats that fold down automatically. Not enough room in the back for cargo when all the seats are up.

The ride & handling are significantly improved from my 2003 Eddie Bauer. The ride is smoother & more quiet than the 2003. The vehicle feels glued to the road like a sports car. The interior (suede seat inserts) looks nicer & feels more comfortable. Seats feel more like a previously owned Volvo. The floor mounted shifter provides a much sportier look & feel than the previous column mount. Power is not overwhelming (doesn't feel like my 2005 Mustang GT with the same basic engine), but it is smooth. A great highway cruiser with 20mpg on the open road. SUV buyers should take a good look at this great truck.

Handling is excellent and fuel economy is better than the 2004 (new V8 engine). Perfect vehicle used for hunting, fishing, huge cargo room, as well as using for business and clients. Two vehicles in one - perfect for my lifestyle! Like having a truck and a luxury car.

Nice smooth ride compared to the 2000 Explorer Eddie Bauer I traded off. This is my third Explorer and they keep getting better.Very sharp body style. Interior dash is laid out nice. A great SUV, best of the three Explorers I've owned. The one flaw I've found in the short time that I've owned it is the placement of the fuel gauge. It's pretty well hidden in the lower left side of the instrumentation group. Pretty difficult to see in the lower recesses of the tach.

We drove a 1998 Eddie Bauer for 8 years and liked it. When the 2006 came out, we were first interested because of the improved safety features. After test driving it we found much else to like about the redesigned 2006. It is very quiet and the ride is very smooth. Our '06 Eddie Bauer has a long list of great features that we are enjoying more and more the longer we have it. The more we use it, the more convinced we are that we have made the right decision in buying this vehicle. While the gas mileage leaves something to be desired -- but what decent sized SUV doesn't -- everything else about the '06 is very satisfying to us. We would recommend it to anyone thinking about an SUV.

I love this car so much I don't even mind driving to work. Ford has hit a home run. Rugged good looks, very nice and functional interior, quiet as a luxury car, solid road feel, increased power from V8. I also like the fact truck is about six inches taller than previous model, allowing for better visibility. Still, nothing is perfect. Inside door handles have to relocated. What were they thinking? Have only owned the car 2 weeks, but only getting 14mph. Overall I would say the 2006 model is one of the best SUVs around and a very good value.

My new 2006 Ford Explorer XLT is a huge lemon. I have a problem with the steering shaft and have no power steering and Ford is not prepared to repair until some time in the 1st quarter of 2006. They are working on it in engineering. They say it is safe to drive. I am in the process of filing with the Better Business Bureau per Ford's recommendation because they refuse to do any repair to the vehicle. Ford claims it is an inherent problem in some 2006 Explorers and Mercury Mountaineers.

Smooth running 3V V8 has very long legs, with an endless flow of seamless power. Smooth acceleration and braking. Interior quality on par with the F150 though the door panels could be designed a little better as the handles are hard to reach when opening the door. Very impressed with the overall quality of the interior though it does not compare with say, a BMW M5. The ride is very compliant, much better than previous years and the chassis seems much stiffer and quieter. It seems remarkably nimble for such a large vehicle, making it very easy to drive. The 2006 Explorer is head and shoulders above previous model years. It is the best Explorer yet, and is nearly perfect.

The ride, road noise, and stability seem to be much improved. The added horse power is apparent. The seats are much less comfortable than my previous Explorers, even though they are listed as luxury seats. I asked my dealer about this, and they just blew it off. The 'floor shifter' is really in the way after using previous column shifters. It also leaves no room for pockets in the cockpit in which to store things in a convenient manner. I had an extremely difficult time getting the vehicle set up to my preference. After waiting 6 weeks, I finally accepted a vehicle that was very much a compromise -- next time I will abandon my allegiance to Ford.

Ford missed the mark on their redesign. The Explorer acts like the V6 is unable to get it moving without putting the peddle to the floor and it still only get @ 13 mpg. The new second row seating will not let MOST child booster seats be installed correctly. I only found three and none of them were seats I would have chosen. There is no room in the drivers area to put anything. The put a little area for cell phone or whatever all the way on the on top of the dash but it is too small and too hard to use. I would not buy it again!

I was really into the 2005 Explorer and was really tempted to buy it because as we all know some car makers can really screw up a great thing, but waiting for the 2006 was the best choice I could make. As soon as I got in the 2006 everything was right there, in easy reach. As i test drove the vehicle, it was so quiet and has a tight turning radius. But the thing that shocked me was when I test drove I punched the gas and it took off with no hesitation and then I slammed the brake from 60 and took my hands off the wheel and... STRAIGHT. I was sold on that and then when I took a corner doing 35, I said "I'm taking this home". If you think I'm lying, try it. I "GUARANTEE" you will be shocked!

After test driving everything else I bought the first '06 sold from my dealership. Over all you cannot beat the styling, ride, room, power, comfort, price or anything about the Explorer. I do have concerns about the service records given my past experiences with Explorers. My last 2 were in the shop more times then I care to mention. I just hope Ford's motto lives up to my '06 XLT and their quality was job one when building my '06.
