2012 was a good car (my son's car with 120,000) he still drives it. My 2005 with 72,000 miles IS great. That's from personal experience. Comfortable ,solid, feeling safe in it.Comfortable seats and plenty of room. Lock the differential and you can go anywhere.

What a great ride!

This is a terrific SUV. Yes, its a gas hog, but the power, control, and creature comforts out weigh that particular negative. I bought this to haul my elderly handicap parents, and their scooters around town. We all love the smooth ride, AC, and Its turning capability. Its easy to climb in and out of, and we find that even though we do not plan on having more than three adults at a time, we are all happy with the space provided inside. Check timing belt, and tires. Expensive to replace.

Like previous posts I would not recommed this car to anyone unless they like paying for rental cars and expensive repairs. Just had my drive shaft replaced at 76,000 miles for $1,300. (Tip: search the web for shops that sell re-manufactured shafts for $450 to $350). At 52,000 miles the internal speaker in the instrument cluster went out, the VW repair is to replace the instrument cluster, the part alone is $1,000. It does handle nice in the snow but its a gas guzzler and tires (expensive ones) seem to last only about 30,000...we're due for our 3rd set at 76,000 miles. Also need a slew of special tools to repair if your a do it yourself person. Very noisy, due to wind, with the window open

I would not recommend this car to anyone who is not a millionaire with money to burn and likes to have their car in the shop at least once a month. We bought this car brand new, zero miles on it and had to bring it into the shop within the first month. It was all downhill from there. Every mechanical piece on the car was replaced under warranty (which we extended to five years immediately) except for the motor, which I am sure would run forever while all the other peices of the car fall off all over the road. Sadly, I had to buy a back-up car so I had something reliable to go to work in and had to carry a battery for the key in my purse, because you never knew when the car would not unlock.

Solid, well made German SUV with good handling for the most part. V8 gas mileage is a blended 15. Always has been hesitant off the line, but plenty of power once you are moving, great feel for a driver. Comfortable, well designed. Like the look, like the drive. Interior leather, wood appointments nice, luxury feel. For the money, this is a good luxury SUV, same new platform as Porsche Cayenne. Mechanically well built and doesn't wear out.

Same comments as most of the others: Great highway ride, strong V8 performance, Best turning radius of any car I have ever owned. Handles very well. Nicely appointed interior, comfortable seats. Downside: the brakes for wear and this car is very difficult to be smooth when driving, at very low speeds the brakes grab and the throttle response is jerky. Poor Gas mileage Overall the car has exceed my expectations and most of the bugs from the 2004 models we worked out.

We bought this SUV so my wife, a nurse, could get to work regardless of the weather. It has consistently demonstrated it can do that in some absolutely horrible conditions. We have a set of winter wheels with Pirelli Scorpion studless ice and snow tires for it and it can go just about anywhere. In good weather it is a fun SUV to drive; in sport mode it can beat most vehicles off the line. You'd never know you had 5,000 pounds under you. Reading other reviews I have no idea why people have been complaining of tire or brake life. Make sure the wheels are aligned and select tires carefully. Initial reliability was poor but has improved a lot;not cheap to fix--$1,100 for timing belt!

I bought this SUV used and love it so far. Its true what everyone says about the brakes, tires, fuel efficiency and service. My tires were $800 for all 4 and the shop rotates my tires for free anytime i want to. Same shop tells me the brakes aren't cheap either $600 for ceramic pads up front. However, this truck is solid and safe you will bulldoze through snow and probably won't every hydroplane in the rain. You will love this truck until you get to the shop(try to stay away from the dealership, their labor is super expensive)

Bought new in 05. Drove to work around DC area and on trips up an down the east coast. Hauled a boat trailer with great ease. This thing has torque! AWD is terrific in the snow. After 45000 miles the nav/radio would not turn off. Killed battery. VW replaced at 50,000 no charge but had to wait 6 weeks for the part!?! At 71000 mi noticed rough running intermittently. Dealer had to drop engine ($2500 P&L) and repair timing gear area (another $2500P&L) Serviced only by VW. Cannot guarantee repeat. If I had know of this possibility would not have bought it. VW has no idea how to address the luxury market. Loaner cars during warranty were trade ins not even VW!! VW America no help.

I love my Touareg! It had a few issues early on but were fixed as necessary. It is heavy and all wheel drive, so it's tough on tires. I ditched my factory tires at 11k miles for a set of Nokian WR G2's and haven't looked back. Really the best tire for the Touareg. I had an Expedition previously, so gas mileage wasn't an issue. The FSI V6 and V8 on the newer models are a significant improvement over 2004-2007 models.

very heavy, smooth, safe car. Very solid german feel, almost all high end options on most other cars are standard on Touareg. Tires are expensive to change if you get the 19's like I have but are very reasonable as 17 or 18's. I have 2 sets of tires, great in the snow with the all seasons on 17's in 18" snow in Tahoe. NO problems. Mechanically very good, poor fuel economy but it's a V8 ! 14 in the city, 19 on the hwy. I get oil changes for $75 at a VW dealer. Had a headlight bulb blow, and an airbag under warranty replaced in over 2 yrs. Highly recommend.

I was initially really excited about my Touareg, but became suspicious after a road trip that included lots of error messages. When I brought it to the VW dealership to have it checked out, they were not willing to take the time to find out what was going on and told me to come back if it happened again. After a short year and a half we had to put $3000 into it for new tires, breaks, rotors, etc. None of which were included in the warranty although it was leased, I should have known, but was disappointed anyway. The lights go out while driving periodically for no apparent reason. The lining on the door handles are also peeling. Fuel economy is poor, but we knew that. The CD player is poor.

Owned this vehicle for less than a year. Initially we were very impressed with its road manners. The brakes had been done before delivery however we had to have them done again (no charge to us) I drive 12km return to my work. 4 months later, brakes require work. The battery is done. Most of the reviews on these express the same issues. Our other vehicle is a Tahoe and we have had zero problems. We are currently trading it in for another Yukon/Tahoe. Unfortunately this is not a car I would recommend.

All of my oil changes were done by the dealer & only cost $108. This car just spared me and my husband from more series injuries following a near head on crash. Other driver crossed center line. My husband swerved to the right to try & avoid the other car, but the driver still hit us / almost a T-Bone then slide the entire length down our car. Drivers side airbags deployed and spared my 6'7" husband from serious injury to his head & face. He still suffered 3 broke ribs though. We love our car.

I bought my VW with 24000 and know I have 60000. I dove it from Texas to Chicago with no problems. It is a very expensive SUV to fix, but if you change your own oil, or buy your own parts it's way cheaper. Tires are the worst. I still can't find a place that to get them changed. They run from 700 to 2000 dollars.

Not great but ok.

I am a mechanic for a used German car dealer and I bought this trade in for fun, its a late build 2005. BTW 2004 is a lemon, mid to late build 2005+ is a good car. Positives: Interior, exterior, solid vehicle. Negatives: Terrible gas mileage, 6 speed transmission shifts constantly and hard, radio is horrific, small interior, too many electronic gizmos. 4.2L Audi engine is excellent. Its a tough German car not a smooth Japanese car. If you don't believe me go to web VW boards and check the car out, the transmission is the worst aspect of this vehicle but you can reprogram it with some success. Overall nice and somewhat better than some of the Mercedes I work on.

I had no idea it would eat tires every year! Gas mileage was known, but gas wasn't $4.50 at the time. It's been in the shop so much, my wife wants me to sell it now! Service sucks, they can't order the correct parts half the time so we have to go back multiple times for stupid stuff. I will NEVER buy another VW again. I tried, and it was a failure. They say the car is 'heavy' and that's why it eats tires. B.S. My dad has a huge van loaded with his contractor stuff (much heavier than the Touareg) and he gets 30k miles no problem. I think it's the 4WD system chewing up the tires. I'm actively looking at a replacement even though it will cost me $. I like to keep cars 12+ years but not this time

I absolutely love this car and can't wait for the V6 diesel to reach the states. I have driven the Touareg V6 diesel (overseas) and all I can say is wow. 30+ mpg and lots of torque. I compare my Touareg to my brothers 2 X5's (both diesel, 2006 & 2008). The interior layout of the Touareg is far beyond the BMW. Even my brother agrees. The newer larger X5 is a disappointment compared to the older body style. The Touaregs styling is better than both X5's. The Touareg coming in as a overweight still handles very well. The suspension does a very good job of keeping the car at it's optimum performance level. The sound of the V8 is quit p;easing. I have gotten 20 MPG on the hwy at 72 MPH.

Have owned many different makes and models including several sports cars, The VW Touareg ranks right at the top for fun, comfortable, capable transportation. It has proven to be perfect mechanically requiring nothing other than routine maintenance and 3 :( sets of high performance 19" tires. This is a heavy, powerful vehicle that is a little rough on the sticky OEM tires. Highly recommend - you will not be disappointed. 17.8 MPG

I really shopped around before purchasing my Touareg. My black exterior really gets people's attention, and my passengers LOVE the interior. BUT, my tires wore out quickly, gas mileage sucks, get-up-and- go doesn't exist without putting it in S, or manual. Radio ate my CD, can't get it back. Passenger mirror doesn't always tilt when backing up. Rubber on inside driver's side door is peeling. Seat belt dinger... can anyone say ANNOYING? Automatic windshield wipers can scare the crap out of you on a sunny day... they'll scape across the window without notice.

It's been almost 3 years with my Touareg... it's a keeper. Granted, you cannot be a person on a tight budget for an SUV like this, but it's worth every penny in price, maintenance, and fuel. I truly feel like I can go wherever my heart desires with the Touareg. Yeah, brakes and tires require changing more frequently than expected, but it's a worthwhile trade-off for the performance and amenities on this SUV. Highly recommended. The key is to make sure you can afford to maintain it. If you cannot afford to maintain it, don't buy it. If you can, you will love it.

THis is our 2nd touareg. The 1st one was a buyback because of electrical problems that were never ending. However, we still loved the car and agreed to take a replacement Touareg. The 05 Touareg has met all our expectations is probaly the nicest SUV we saw while we were looking to make our purchase. We compared it to the BMX X5 and X3, Lexus, etc. However kept coming back to it. Even after our initial lemon Touareg, this is still our favourite vehicle and am glad we stuck with it. The 05' has been problem free since we have had it.

It gets about 15 mpg , not bad for a V8 and heavy vehicle. Great drive, great audio system, very luxurious inside. There have been several reliability issues, but I think after 2004 many things have been fixed. The power window switches are white plastic, painted black, the paint comes off easily. The air suspension had a new compressor put in at 22,000 miles and the tires are getting work out (19" Pirellis), gonna try Michelin next. A seatbelt seized up in the rear, and one headlight had a bad connection. I still love this car! It gets lots of compliments.

I have owned it for about 2 years with almost no problems; the maintenance is very affordable, about once a year for $120 ~ $180. It is fun to drive, beats the X5 and ML hands down. Great handling. The interior is really nice, almost as nice as the Cayenne. Some people say the gas mileage is not that great; I have to partially agree but keep in mind that this is an SUV with lots of horses under the hood. If you are looking for gas mileage then do not buy an SUV.

I purchased my VW new with only 13 miles on it. I have to say, I love this car, I like how it drives and the pure power. The only down side are the brakes and tires. I had the first set of tires replaced at 8700 miles under the tire warranty, I still had to pay $220.00. Then the brakes at 15000 miles, that was $600.00. Now at 27000 miles I need another set of tires. For some reason the car loves to wear out the tires. I take it to the VW dealer every 5000 miles for its oil change and tire rotation. So a car that is two years old with 27000 miles has a new set of brakes and rotors, and on it's third set of tires. Be prepared to spend some money!

Was lucky enough to buy a 2005 V6 with only 8000 miles, now up to 12000 miles. Free of any problems so far. I love to drive it; it is luxurious with a quiet ride, has an impeccable interior, great handling, feels solid and very safe, definitely underpowered with the v6, recommend driving in the S mode, transmission and shifting is great, heavy and poor acceleration especially when compared with my 2006 X3. The stereo system is disappointing at any volume above 21 (especially the bass). If economy is not your concern, buy the V8 or V10 diesel version.

When I saw Touareg first time on a car show, I knew that I would own it. I fell in love with it right away. Although I knew that I should wait a year or two before buying just to see that all the minor problems/defects and recalls will be fixed. So in 2005 finally got it. My choice was a V-6 with package 5, which includes all options, such as air suspension, navigation, etc. Exterior color is black, interior is beige. So after 1 1/2 years and 30K miles I still enjoy every minute I spend driving it. The only downside - fuel economy. Even for V-6 and a large gas tank, you will spend quite a bit of money on gas. Other then that it is perfect car. My wife has a VW as well and loves it too.

Bought this SUV 10/05 after looking at MB500. VW is so much quieter. No problems in 18k miles! I love this vehicle and its durability, wear and tear. Everyone who has sat in it wants to borrow it when additional space is needed - they'd buy but can't afford it. Great family car - whether you have kids or just a dog like me! So much fun in the winter and summer! Definitely will buy another after this hits higher miles.

This is by far the best looking SUV on the road and it stops there. VW went wrong or someone did not follow how an SUV is supposed to last. The brakes are a big problem. You will replace them every 5,000 miles and it will cost you $600 or more to have them repaired. An oil change can cost you upwards of a $150 due to the design of getting to the oil pan. Everything goes wrong with this SUV. Stay away from the Touareg.

I recently hit a large buck in my Touareg. Although the buck was large enough to total a car, my Touareg handled it perfectly (like the tank it is) and got me safely through the accident with minimal damage. Although it has lousy fuel economy, when it comes down to safety, the Touareg is an excellent vehicle to drive where I live in Pennsylvania where there are LOTS of deer.

We previously owned a 2004 VW Beetle Convertible and traded into this. We do no off-roading, but loved the body style and needed more room. After eleven months of ownership, I have one chief complaint and that is my Pirelli tires after 17,500 miles are gone. I have been diligent about rotation and inflation, per manufacturer's instructions, but this problem really has me on fire. I to replace them after eleven months of ownership with another brand (Michelin), will cost me $1,200. I have been told by tire manufacturers that the most I could expect to get out of a set of tires would probably be 25,000 miles.

I have owned my Touareg for just over one year. At 15,000 the brakes went down to the rotors. It cost $1,000 to fix. This truck is very poorly made inside can't handle kids at all. I've had too many problems to list. I will be trading it in very soon! Also, it gets very bad gas mileage. It has lots of squeaks and rattles inside. The wood is cracking and the rubber is peeling on driver's door. This is a very sad vehicle.

I bought the '05 Touareg off a dealer lot thinking I was saving money on a loaded Luxury SUV with 6,000 miles on it. The first night in my garage the battery died and the key was stuck in the ignition. Then a couple of weeks later the sunroof leaked. Then I noticed moisture in the rear tail light. The SUV's engine sounds rough at low speeds and the disc brakes grab to a startling stop. Oh, and the tires, be ready to replace them at about 15,000 miles. Now for the worst part, the gas mileage, LOL. You better be prepared for a shock there. I averaged 10.75 mpg city and 14 Hwy! Now you ask, why did you buy it? All impulse and the ride is nice, but VW has a sub par product here for a lot of money.

I have owned this car for a year and a half and it is a blast to drive. It begs "drive me faster." The keyless entry is great. The beeps are so anoying though, like the selt belt, passenger air bag off, and others. If I run into a store my wife has to bucle the seatbelt to make it stop dinging. The VW service department where I purchased my car is terrible. I needed new tires after only 6,000 miles, and my car can't stay aligned. So it has great performance, but the misc. problems make me want to sell it.

I bought the 2005 VW Touareg one year ago and it has not failed to live up to my expectations. The handling is great and the interior is above average. I like the interior because it looks like a spaceship. The only thing that needs to be improved upon is when you push the gas it will shake a bit and as always the gas millage should be improved (450 till empty when you actually get 300 miles a tank).

This has been a great truck. It drives great and very comfortable. It's not like any other SUV. It handles better than most cars. I manage to get about 19-20 mpg on the highway. It's no econo-car, but it's not too bad considering. Compare that to a Lincoln Navigator. If you want to drive this vehicle in anything other than gas-miser mode (or pass someone), you need to switch the transmission from "D" to "S" or shift manually.... which is fine for me considering current gas prices.

I had a truly amazing experience with the VW Touareg. I own two Ferrari 360 Spyders and I still love my Touareg's performance and comfort. I am a huge off-roader and the Touareg handles like a soft carpet throughout the toughest of terrains (e.g. Swiss Alps Ugust 2005). However, I also love to race on tracks and I raced a Toureg against its "cousin", the Porsche Cayenne Turbo, and I ended up winning topping out over 175 mph.

I purchased my 2005 Touareg due to VW's reputation of quality and safety. At 1,200 miles it started to make horrible metal on metal sounds from the transmition that the dealership could not duplicate because once the transmition would warm up it would stop. Starting at 2,200 miles the headlights would occasionally decide to take a break. Again the dealership said all was well. Finally at 4,400 miles the SRS Airbag system failed. According to the dealership this means they will not deploy in a collision. The earliest time they would be able to repair it, but it would take two weeks. So it sits in the garage until then.

Overall, I'm very happy with this SUV. I get a lot of compliments on it and it drives beautifully. I do wish I had gotten a V8 (pun intended!) as the acceleration of the V6 model is poor. There have been a few issues with the transmission where, at low speeds, it will knock. I've also experienced a few weird electric issues, such as the radio ate my CD and the speakers make a popping sound when I arm and disarm the alarm.

They dealer has said that they have had major issues with these...Some people are only gettin 12k miles. I called VW about it and they said that they would give me ONE tire. What a slap in the face. They will not stand behind their product. Do yourself a favor and buy a Porsche, BMW, Lexus, or Merecedes. They are known as luxury vehicles for a reason. They stand behind their cars and they give great customer service. I will say that the dealership has really stood up for me, but I will never buy another VW.

I purchased my 2005 Volkswagen Touareg in July of 2005, just before the fuel prices hit the roof. So going into this from a Passat was a wallet killer, but I found if I turn off the anti-slip feature I get about 20-23mpg. I feel that this vehicle sat in the lot for a while, the paint on this vehicle is way below what you'd expect for a SUV listing at $39,000 and that the dealership just wanted to get rid of it. But besides the dealer, I am very happy with the vehicle. It does great in the snow and ice and its such a mile eater on the highway I never feel tired after driving a few hundred miles at a time, its very refreshing. I wish it came with air conditioned seats, especially for the summer. Overall this is a great vehicle.

In Germany and without a car, I looked and tested just about every vehicle available. My main concern was the wait, most dealers were talking about a 10 to 12 week wait, something I could not afford. I told them I'd buy something I liked and wanted but it had to be for immediate delivery. After seeing and testing about 40 cars between Audi, BMW, Mercedes and VW, I decided to go for the 2005 VW Touareg. I got a pretty good deal to include a 6 year 75K mile extended warranty. It is the only Blue Silver Metallic Touareg around here where we live. My only problem was getting used to its AWD after driving a Honda Odyssey for 5 years. I like the looks and the interior is superb.

This vehicle has been trouble free for me, a concern with so many electronic/mechanical options, so that is good. Build quality is very good, seams are tight, everything fits well. The interior is very upscale and impresses everyone. The sound of the V8 is very sporty, many have made comments on that. The downside, the navigation system lacks detail, street names ect. I am hoping for an software update-please hear me VW! It works fine though in a basic way. The rear seat could use a little more footroom and headroom. My brother, who is a large guy, says it's hard to get in and out of,either front or back. I love the sporty driving, towing ability, acceleration and looks.

Have had the Volkswagen Touareg V6 for six months, and have had absolutely no problems. The vehicle is quiet, comfortable, and handsome. I do have a problem with the chimes indicating that the seat belt is not being used, or that the door is open, etc. I find it downright maddening. When I leave the car running and my wife is waiting as the passenger, she has to buckle my seatbelt to stop the chimes. VW needs to overhaul the system and cut down on the decibles.

Trading up from a mini-minivan (Mazda MPV) I can't stop having so much fun. Although I've got the V6 it still performs well. From the line it's not quite a Corvette, but I've left some V8s wondering if the V6 badge was a mistake. The Touareg looks like a million bucks as well and is treated to a weekly car wash in all weather. To see so many people pointing, and even though I can't read lips saying..."oh, look theres that new Touareg!" is a treat. This baby hugs the asphalt as if it's attached! Try for the V8, but the V6 is still just as fun and well enough equipted to keep your adrenaline going!

I have never bought a new vehicle with so many problems. When I first got my Touareg the steering wheel shook and I needed to get an alignment. I have already gotten new brakes. The speakers have constantly been rattling. Also, the radio blew out in my car and made all of the electrical components go out. VW kept my car for 29 days claiming that the part for the radio was on back order. Finally the 17 inch Pirelli tires have blown due to a MFG defect. This is my fist and last VW. The transmission went on mine at 1,900 miles! The dealers ship said VW would only allow them to clear the codes! It is not the dealer's fault VW NA runs them with the warranty and will not let them fix it. I had to start a lemon law, lawsuit to get them to speak with me! I had read the reviews just like you and thought, OK there are a few bad apples but no problem VW will fix it. Nope they will not fix it, if you have the throttle or transmission issue they will tell you to sue. Check the web and read up, there is a class action lawsuit forming on the Touareg and VW couldn't care less. They would not repair mine after 9 times and refused to replace it or allow it as a trade in. This truck really gets only 8-16 miles per gallon. Please do your homework on this vehicle first. I bought my Volkswagen Touareg V8 brand new and I fell in love. It has great power, aceleration and excellent brakes. It handles as well on road as well as over water and on uneven pavement. I have not gone off road yet. I dislike the fact that oil changes are so expensive (synthetic) and any little part costs a fortune, ie. windhield wipers $50.00 a piece. Also, I do not like the fact that it gets only 14 miles per gallon in city. Yes, I was aware of this when bought it, but with gas prices and the fact that it uses only premium this is kinda ridiculous. Anyway for other than these little annoyances it runs well and I feel safe in it.

I extensively researched this car before purchase. Its exterior design is unique and the interior is luxurious and comfortable. The car (related to the Porsche Cayenne) appears to be worth more than what I paid for it. Also some great deals on 2005 models. Fit and finish are excellent - I poured over every square inch of it and didn’t find any defects. Nada! No excess carpeting, paint overspray, etc. One complaint is the back seat leg room is a little tight - the middle “hump” doesn’t help. Also steering wheel and air conditioning controls are complicated - will have to take some time learning. I look forward to 36 months and/or 36,000 miles of pure enjoyment! LOL

I've owned the Lexus RX (it's a 'Toyota' Harrier in Japan - which changes your mind quickly about how luxurious it is!) and the Mercedes-Benz ML 320. The Touareg's quality through and through outclasses these cars and many others I have tested. I have not had the problems many have written about (luckily?) and except for the V6 being a bit gutless this car is fun to drive (especially in sport shift mode and sport suspension!) and costs half as much as the Porsche Cayenne (no air suspension offered on base V6 there!). Off-roading was great as well!

Transmission clunking on downshifting, service dept said they could not duplicate the problem. Thus, they can not fix it. Tire pressure monitors not working, cracked panels at dash, seat belts locking and have to be cut off. Center carrier barring had to be replaced. I started Lemon Law proceeding on this. It just happens that the day VW recieved by defect notification, "suddenly" they can fix my vehicle. We have been so happy with this car and have recommended it to so many other people. Our friends even bought a Touareg off our recommendation and have also been very happy. Yes the gas mileage is not the best, but we didn't expect to get the best gas mileage for this car, if we wanted that, we would have looked at a high bread vehicle instead. The power in this car is great and makes a great tow vehicle. It is very comfortable and we have not had any issues with it at all expect to take it in to fix the radio, (re-boot it).

In the past 16 months we have had too many electrical problems to count; not to mention off the top of my head: 6 radio changes, many wood panel replacements (they crack in the heat & cold - go figure) a leaking moon roof, the power windows have no power at the moment, a squeak in the wheel that the service department "can't figure out", the computer system for the car reads one thing and the service department says another. We have had no luck or help from VW USA - they have "been reviewing the case" for months, no one ever calls us back after promising to do so. Don't not buy this car - i am trading it in tonight for a Ford Explorer - at least at Ford they call me back. Good riddance!

I love this car...hate VW, hate the dealer..Nothing but bugs, problems, cracking wood trim, every week this car has another problem. VW failed on this, but to think the sorry dealership network they have can actually take care of a customer with a $50,000 car is the joke of the century. Run away from this vehicle, VW or America, and the dealerships as fast as you can.

My parents bought me a VW Touareg as a welcome home gift from College this May. I was excited but at the same time apprehensive because I have heard/read that this SUV has many problems et al. I got it and me and my buddies went up to New Hampshire and it was the best automobile I have ever driven in my life(last car was a 2002 330i)! I had to take it in for a glitch in the airbag system and for a temperature gauge malfunction but have been tremendously satisfied with it! Superb road handling on wet, grueling, everything-nature-throws-at-you New Hampshire backroads and on the highways. I now have 12,500 miles on my Touareg, offroading and highway/city. Definately buy if you have the chance!

This vehicle is a perfect 10. Quality and performance what one expects from a solid, no mistakes superior build german vehicle. I know what I am talking about. I own a collision repair facility. Seing how some vehicles perform in crashes made me look even harder when I decided to by an SUV. I am absolutely thrilled and do not regret buying this vehicle one second. Recommend this vehicle highly. The fuel economy exceeded the posted sticker by far. I decided on the V6 with Pkg# 2, plus Sound System. That's all I needed. Have several other vehicles, so this one is for my pleasure only. And what a pleasure to drive it is. Advise: Buy it!

After already going through one Touareg, I'm onto the next. My 2004 was replaced under the lemon law due to transmission problems and I received my '05 this past May. After driving the car for 3 months I noticed hesitations and horrible clunking noises during up/downshifts. The transmission in this car is downright scary. I have pulled out into intersections with plenty of time and the car hesitates and then takes off like no other. It is almost like the transmission has to think for a few seconds before it does anything. Sensors and warning lights going off at all times for no reason and horrible OEM tires. So far so good with the 2005, but stay away from the '04s.

I tested many SUVs and my two finalists were the LR3 and the vw. The LR3 was lots of fun, but the vw had much superior handling. The drive for a vehicle this size is amazing. Not like the 530i I had just left, but much better than anything else I test drove. Still after 8K, it is a great driving vehicle. The gas mileage is very poor. The radio/navigation system is so poorly designed that I need much more than the 700 words alloted. If a fifth grader designed it he/she should not get to the 6th grade. I tried to get to VP Len Hunt in charge of this area, to tell him about the design flaws, but was told he does not take calls from owners. Now I know why this will never improve.

The V6 is underpowered, but performs well for a vehicle this weight. Smooth ride and excellent handling. After 40k miles in one year, thankfully, no maintenance nightmares. Only annoying stuff that keeps you coming back to the dealership - tire pressure sensors always going out, allignment issues, and way too many recalls. Dealership (Boardwalk VW, Dallas) has an excellent service dept, highly recommended for those in DFW area. Not as well built as some suggest, a couple of creaks in dash. After reading other reviews, I would also be very upset about the reliability of this vehicle for the price paid, but overall a good experience here.

Bought for wife,in truth I wanted it. Drove older one last year and read of problems and waited til now. Drove it on dirt, thru sand, mud, high speed drift on dirt, on soaked grass covered with water, etc, salesman turned white, to me outstanding. Waited til now to buy.In younger days drove sport cars,Jags, was top driver in SCCA with a back door sponsorship and a factory built race car. Not a problem, wife and kids love it especially when it gets dark out and the dash light come on,all those colors. I dont care about gas mileage,am sure my wife will advise me about it. My daughter,17,now going to Univ.in upper NY State,we live in FL,I asked her if she wanted one of these after her first year.

I have found this car to be of excellent quality and ride. The V8 is a powerful bonus, but fuel economy suffers (though I find to be getting better milage than the milage posted). The ride is comfortable, with the my only complaint of the interior is air conditioning flow to the back seat. The tires out of the dealership lasted about 15000 miles, so be prepared to buy new then. I do not have the nav system, and found it to be too difficult to use, as it was CD based and not touch screen. Other than that, this is a excellent car for one who wants 4 wheel capability (I live in CO, and it handles rugged roads outstandingly well) or a sporty car for in town.

Not one of VW's best efforts. Has been in the shop for warranty work seven times in less than one year - all related to the vehicle's electronic warning systems. Confusing and overly complicated instrumentation/cabin controls. Abysmal gas mileage, very limited tire life - 12-15000 miles, odd size tires that very few dealers stock. Can't wait to get rid of it but none of the local dealers will touch it on a trade- in. Was offered $10,000 trade in value on a new Accord.

After many recalls, and many problems, I finally gave in and traded mine in. Took a big hit, but it was well worth it. My new car has 12,000 on it, and hasn't been to the dealer yet. VW made a great looking SUV that test drives well, but is terrible to live with. Their service department isn't up to the standards set by other manufacturers in this price range. I owned a Saab previously, and although it spent too much time in the shop, the service dept was knowledgeable and always had a loaner. Bottom line, getting rid of my Touareg was worth it (simply so I wouldn't be reminded of my poor buying decision every day).

Many miles logged on this unreliable vehicle, with MANY service/repair trips to dealer after less than 1 year/8K miles. Elecrical system, warning light problems, trim breaking/falling apart - little annoyances = BIG frustrations! Even more frustrating is wasted time spent trying to make an expensive new car "right". A difficult life lesson, and major ouch on depreciation! Maybe I could give it away and claim a tax deduction? I was told 2005 Touareg has the "bugs" worked out - Would you like to spend 40K+ to find out? (I think not!) Getting ready to clash with VW on a "solution" - this car IS a LEMON (whether they admit it or not).

Numerous, numerous electrical problems. I like the design but until VW works out all the bugs - buy something else. VW's Customer Servive line is also a joke. I have enjoyed the pleasure of driving this quality vehicle. Other than the Pirelli tires, the vehicle has been very reliable. However, if some problem does manifest itself, VW dealer has been most helpful in correcting the problem. I would think Volkswagon would take some responsibility for the lack of wear and realibility of these tires since it was VW's engineers that chose these tires for the production line. Stepping away from the tire issue is not a good way to resolve the issue.

Dash lights failed. Entire assembly needed to be replaced. Tires worn out at 15K. Dealer recommends alignment when tires changed. At slow speed turns it feels like the U joints are catching and releasing. Told it is caused by the tires that need to be replaced. Warning lights appear and need to be "recalibrated." Accelerator pauses occasionally. Told it was the brakes that don't allow the accelerator to function - not true. Very expensive car for this to happen in 6 months.

This is not your father's VW. It accelerates like a sports car with the luxury of any top European sedan. It also has the convenience of having the road view of an SUV enabling the driver to see far down the highway. Like many SUV's you may take it off road. My off road experience has been limited to date but I do know that mud and snow are easily accessible. This is my fifth SUV and I do not think of it as an SUV at all. I think many men will buy this as a family car and end up wanting it to be their very own.

Although the Touareg gets loads of attention - looks nice, feels nice - it seems to have a lot of "bugs" to work out. The car is highly computerized and sometimes needs to be rebooted (yes, just like your comptuer at home). This means actually turning off your car, then turning it back on. There have been MULTIPLE recalls on the Touareg and has spent a lot of time in the shop. This has the potential of being a great car if they could work out some of these annoying problems.

Touareg is really fun to drive. I do not drive very much nor do I require extreme performance and Touareg seems to fit my profile extremely well. I want a reliable drive in snow and Touareg is awesome in that respect. I have read about lots of issues on lower VIN Touaregs, but the only problem (which was easily fixed) was fast running clock. So if you are in the market for these I would recommend higher than 65k VIN as I have very positive experience.

Everyone said don't buy one..."They're unreliable... Read consumer ratings"...etc. I was overwhelmed with the specifications, styling and detail, appearance and ride. I have owned 3 Jeep Grand Cherokees, a Land Rover Discovery, and few Mazdas. Other choices were BMW X3, Acura MDX, Volvo XC. This car has well exceeded any of them in engineering and detail. I haven't owned it long, so I can't vouch for the long-term reliability factor, but I have never liked a car this much. The car is loaded with standard features -- I only opted for the power seat upgrade. There are so many electronic features and controls that I am having to do my homework and read the manual / watch the video.

Pros: When it works right, AmaZING. Cons: VW is arrogant and insists that too many problems are within normal vehicle operating parameters. Driving experience: Drives nicely when aligned properly, which is rarely. Ooops, just hit a curb, need to bring it in again, now the truck is going to act squirrely again. This may have all the bells and whistles to go off road but there is a price to pay. If you off road on anything substantial, I can almost guarantee that you will damage one of the tires with a gash of some sort. And because this is an AWD vehicle, you will now need to replace ALL the tires in order to retain the proper handling dynamics and don't forget to re-align it. So On

The Touareg on paper looks like the ultimate SUV: excellent perfomance on pavement and unbelievable off road ablility. The problem: it will be in the shop so often you will not be able to experience this theoretical performance very often. Over the first year of owning this car I have had multiple problems: stepper motor malfunction, poor remote range, door handle fell off, bizarre deafening fan noise that I was told is "normal", persistent wind noise from side mirrors, and others. And going to a VW dealer for repairs is no joy. They have no clue about customer service. The attitude of the service dept. is accusatory at best- like i caused all of the quality control problems. The Touareg combines the road handling characteristics of a well-engineered German car with the attributes of a mid- size SUV. Like its smaller German counterparts, the Touareg handles brilliantly, despite its size and weight. While the acceleration is not blinding, it is adequate, the seating comfort is first rate as is the design and workmanship. The winter performance was a non-event with no problems encountered and no indications of impending difficulties. Highway travel is comfortable and mileage is acceptable at 20 mpg, 16 mpg around town.

This is the worst vehicle I have ever owned. I would never buy a VW again. The electrical issues are overwhelming. With 3,218 miles I traded it on a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I lost a lot of money on the deal because of all the issues with the VW Touareg.

Purchased 11/04 & have 3500 miles. It has been back to the dealer 4 times and they said they cannot fix the problem of it pulling to the right. Volkswagen will not back it up & says it is "fixed to their specifications". This is the absolutely the worst buying experience I have ever had. I would not recommend the vehicle or any Volkswagen.

My wife owned a 2001 Jetta & we traded in and bought a new Toureg (V8). Radio didn't work & one problem after another. Toureg has been in & out of the shop for repairs & some repeats. We asked VW to replace the car with a new one. Even the Service Mgr asked. They said NO, they will fix the problems. So our hands are tied, if we sell we lose thousands of dollars on this piece of junk. I NEVER wanted to buy a VW and but my wife liked the it. Now my wife regrets buying this. I'm sure other auto makers would have replaced this vehicle if it had so many issues.

On paper this looks like the Ideal SUV but after purchasing and driving for just a few days I realized I was not happy. The seating is uncomfortable, I avg. 10.6 mpg in NYC stop&go traffic (I have a heavy foot), stereo lacks bass, Navi is sub-par compared to others & consistantly off actual car location, interior trim flaked, TPM system faults frequently and the VW dealer I dealt with was the actual worst dealer I have ever seen. After servicing anything on the car i always found something they damaged or did not replace/ fix to original condition! Fed up after only 10 months and traded for a acura with much better reliablity. Overall a very disappointing experience.

I purchased my Touareg in Jan 2004, and by November had had it in the shop for more than one month. AC repeatedly loses freon, they can't find the leak. I've had the wiring harness replaced, battery replaced due to repeated shorts in the electrical system. Compass sensor and compressor replaced.I have to carry jumper cables in the car, never knowing when it will fail to start. When the electrical is dying, numerous faults will come on and auxiliary systems will begin to be shut down. This is still unresolved. I contacted VW of America and requested a replacement vehicle, they offered to, and did, reimburse me for two month's car payment. I'm still working thru my state's lemon law.

Great fuel (diesel) mileage. Superior comfort ride. No air whistle noise doing 110 mph from Orlando to Miami. Handles the off road conditions very well. Towing 7600 lbs and it doesn't lose power. Excellent breaking system. And a superior sound system. Great paint job and very comfortable cockpit. The interior dash lights always get noticed. It lights up like a cockpit.

Just bought a used 05' V-8 with 5200 miles a couple days ago. I looked at 3 dealerships in the Atlanta area before settling on the Silver/Grey model as it is in almost new condition. Although it did not have as many extras as the 04's I saw and drove this one clearly stood out to me. The fact that it was the last day of the month,a Monday and raining I felt would help with negotiations. It did. The feel of this Luxury sporty SUV is upscale all the way, fit and finish excellent and performance that is most enjoyable to experience. only dig is hard drivers seat bolsters. Maybe it'll soften with time. Great ride! I compared and drove FX-35, MDX, 4Runner and this stands way above.

The Volkswagen Touareg is a great SUV, an example of this is when I went off-roading with this bad boy. Another great feature that I like is the Tire Pressure Monitior since you can actually check out the pressure of all 4 tires. Also I recently got a trialer hitch attached to my Touareg which can tow up 7,500 pounds. In my opinion I should've gotten the V8 since it gives the brawny power of the German cars today, even though the fuel economy would deterioate

I traded a pickup for the V6 Touareg and have been happy with the choice. It's equipped with premium pkg, Xenons, tow hitch, parking aids. So far mileage has been acceptable, 15 mpg local and 19+ on Garden State Parkway. Having read of workmanship problems with early release models, I was wary of purchasing. Currently, it has been trouble free and a very acceptable mode of transport. One of the reasons for my purchase was it's towing capacity, 7000+ lbs. Everyone who has ridden with me has liked the ride, quality and handling. Acceleration is adequate for a V6 engine and braking is superb. My automotive points of reference, we also own a 2004 BMW 330Ci and a 1997 Porsche 993C2S.

I have had two instances of extended repair time due to lack of parts. The first, two weeks, was due to an air bag fault. Parts were not available. Six months later, another airbag fault, plus repeated fault warnings of various kinds, which disappeared after a short time. It was determined a new alternator was needed, Lowering the engine 6 inches was required to replace the alternator (2 day project). This did not fix the voltage problem and cables needed replacing. The cable need to be manufactured. I lost use of the car for over three weeks. I guess the cost of loaner vehicles is less than the cost of stocking parts. The low voltage, cable situation created the fault alerts.

My touareg has been great. I've owned it since June 2003 so I had one of the first ones out there. While I never had anything worse than minor software issues, some have had serious problems. All I can say is this truck is worth a little bit of hassle. It's fairly exclusive, you won't see yourself coming down the road. And the luxury and build quality exceeds BMW and Mercedes, it's really on a par with Audi. In fact, I sold my Audi A8 because what's the point of owning two luxury vehicles. Also, I over 6000lbs of trailer for several hours at a time with zero issues. It's been near perfect for us...there's no other SUV we'd consider (except a V10 Touareg!).

I have had nothing but postive experiences with my Toureg. It has great pickup and unbelievable handling for such a heavy SUV. Considering I went from driving a BMW 325 Manual transmission Sport Edition to the Toureg those words hold a great deal of weight I think. I like to "drive" a car and the Toureg leaves me with that feeling. It has been completely reliable and the few details that needed to get fixed were promptly taken care of at my dealer. The largest bump in the road was a load, hard downshift from the transmission . That problem a hassince been remedied and all is well.

Too many recalls. Electrical problems with tailgate and interior lighting, drive shaft and transmissions problems. Wood panel trim has cracked 2 times. Not enough power when you need it quickly. My vehicle has been in the shop for unscheduled maintenance 18 times and it only has 39,000 miles on it. VW Customer Service has been extremely uncooperative. It is simply the single worst vehicle I have ever owned and I have owned many. I never write to review vehicles but people need to be aware of what they are getting into when they purchased this vehicle. VW has a lot of work to do if they are going to stay in the midsize SUV market.

I wish VW would buy this junk car back. I should not be on a first name basis with the dealer service staff with only 6500 miles on the car. The vehicle has more electrical problems than I can stand, rewire the drivers seat, numerous tire PSI computers, and R/C key antenna issues (I could stand next to the vehicle and it refused to lock). Heck, I didn't even make it home from the dealer on the day we bought it before I had to turn around and bring it back for a problem! This is not what I expect from a high end SUV. Shame on you VW!

Being a past employee at an automobile dealership with over 9 car lines, this is by far the best vehicle I have ever driven. I purchased this vehicle in May of '04 and dread having to turn it in at the end of my drivers option lease. Not only is this vehicle reliable in all circumstances, it also is worth every penny that I spend on it a month. I wouldn't trade my Touareg for any other vehicle in on the market. Volkswagen has definitely hit a high note with this one and continues to prove that they are a company that will continue to rock the market with new and exciting merchandise in the future. I can't wait to see what they will do next to top this one.

After owning 3 Jeep Grand Cherokees, a BMW X-5 and a Mercedes M-350 and having driven just about every other SUV on the planet, yes, including Lexus, Range Rover, Toyotas and Infinities, I can honestly say, they just don't compare to my '05 V-8 Touareg with respect to style, comfort and performance. Another nice thing is they are relatively new which means fewer on the road and still have, for the time being a disticnt uniqeness. Do yourself a favor and take one for a drive before wasting money on a more expensive less enjoyable SUV.

Two complete electrical failures when the vehicle would not start. It was necessary to have it towed into dealership on these two occasions. Had problems with all-wheel drive system especially transfer case. Had electrical problems with all-wheel drive system. Experienced electrical problems with doors not locking or unlocking. Before anyone considers buying a Touareg, check Technical Service Bulletins at NHTSA web site. My Touareg experienced almost all of them. BIG depreciation "hit" when I sold it.

We've had our V8 for about a year and have found it incredibly unreliable. We love the engine performance, ride and design. However, we hate the numerous electrical problems we've had. In the year we've had the vehicle, it's been to the shop at least 5 times. This does not include the recalls! The battery would just die and the dealer service department couldn't figure out what's wrong. The range on the remote is poor. The back seat is small, the storage/trunk area is nonexistent. Anything more than groceries and you have to fold the backseats down, which is no easy feat. Again, we love the look, design and performance, but for 43K and up, its not worth the hassle.

I bought my Touareg 11/2003, test drive many mid-sized suv and narrowed it down between Touareg and Acura MDX. Picked the Touareg because of style and V-8. I love the way it drives, easy to maneuver around town and great ride on the highway. BUT, the recalls and bells and whistle problems stink, it's been to dealership many times. The tire pressure monitor goes off all the time, keyless entry system works on and off with no permanant fix, homelink replaced twice for an electrical short, have to keep programing the MFI door feature. Worried about after my warranty runs out and these problems continue. I have a low vin number. Thinking I should have bought the MDX. Love the V- 8 though.

I really love my Touareg, but have a few issues with it. One, the NAV system is cd based, and my salesman told me DVD based. It cannot locate a lot of places I want to go, and cannot go to a specific address, just in the general "block" of that address. The other thing...no XM or Sirrus radio options. I wanted that option too, and was told it can be done, but NOT. I would not have purchased the vehcile if know about those two items, they were important to me, because of traveling for business a lot! Fuel mil is good, 22 mpg avg, and power is great. Hopefully they will upgrade the NAV and stereo and offer that to previous owners!

I have owned 5 Jeeps since 1986, I like the size and looks of the Jeep but not the brakes or trips to the dealer for repairs. I have 4500 miles on my V-8 Touareg and love it. It is has all the power you would ever need, and is as much fun to drive as my Porsche 4-S. The build quiity is superior to the Jeep. The air suspension is a must. The Touareg V-8 comes standard with most everything unlike the Porsche SUV.. The only negative I have is the gas mileage and the way the rear seats fold down. If I drive sensibly I can get 14 in town and 18 on the freeway. On the road it handles like a sport car (air suspension) After a 400 mile trip my legs are not cramping up as they have in every other car I have owned.

From an A6 to a Touareg

I have to admit, the wife and I stuggled with the idea of going from an A6 to a Touareg. To me, an SUV has always been the equivalent to owning a mini-van, but with a house and a dog (who destroyed the backseat of our A6 - - he didn't know any better), we decided to give an SUV a try. After looking at all of the options we decided to give the Touareg a try and aside from the HORRIBLE fuel economy, we've been quite impressed. Great looking, comfortable, head-turning, and a spot for Mickey (the dog) to hang out without worry.

Love My Touareg

My Touareg is a terrific looker, bold, strong, bright and Colorado Red. Not a day goes by that someone doesn't remark about how sharp she looks. She is comfortable, solid and well built. The ride is great, she handles well, just hugs the road. Visibility is good. So far she has been great in snow and I drive from NH to FL with less fatigue. The sound system is quite good, everything works and I have not had anything go wrong. I love my Touareg!!

We've had our Touareg for about a year. Handles like a sportscar and incredibly fast, and a headturner. But unfortunately, the car is extremely unreliable and has been back to the dealership 5 times for a variety of electrical problems. While the problems have been relatively minor, it's hard to reconcile these annoyances with a $42K car: the passenger side mirror sticks in the 'reverse position,' the rear latch doesn't always unlock, and the radio fades out (apparently the antenna is in a poor location in the car, according to the service manager at our dealership). The dealership has attempted to fix these problems on multiple occasions, to no avail. Our last VW, next will be japanese.

I bought the 2004 model (V8) earlier this year and I love it. Excellent build quality, ride, and interior comfort. I live in Brooklyn and it is still turning heads when I drive it. Only two problem - the Radio/CD player and a quick hood latch issue. The Radio / CD had to be swapped out three times, but this does not surprise me as I had the same exact issue w/ my 2002 1.8T Jetta. I don't know where VW sources their radios/ CD's from, but they need to check build quality or installation. Hood latch was fixed in ten minutes & otherwise a non-issue. Clock also runs fast about 1 min. per week - I always have to reset it!

Purchased VW Touareg after much study and comparison shopping. Considered MB ML, Accura MDX, Cadillac SRX, Lexus RX 330, Porsche Cayenne. Immediately put 3000 interstate miles on it; mileage now 8000 as car was like new demonstrator at time of purchase, due to limited availability. Never owned an SUV before; did this with much trepidation but so far no buyer's remorse as Touareg appears to deliver on its promises. Reliability yet to be determined.

I was initially very pleased with my Touareg, but poor reliability, $99 oil changes, and many many invasive warnings are starting to wear me down. Recalls and expensive maintenance aside, it's actually the overengineering that's causing me the most frustration. The warnings are loud and intrusive. Pull into a parking lot and undo your seat belt to prepare for a meeting, and the warning beeps for 5 minutes every 30 seconds or so. Outside temp drops below 40, ding, low fuel, ding, tire pressue drops, ding. The range on the remote is also very poor. Just another nit pick, but all of these collective items make it very difficult to recommend this vehicle

There's no question that the biggest problem with this vehicle is feul economy. Otherwise, it's a perfect blend of power, luxury and utility with the V8. I did have to get the trunk mounted CD changer, due to the lack of an in-dash changer (which is a sin considering that 15K cars have in-dash changers now), but considering that I now have 7 discs to choose from (including the single disc in-dash player) it's not such a bad situation. The in-dash player does sometimes have trouble reading burned CD's. Ride quality is excellent in this vehicle, as is noise suppression. One fault is the transmission gearing. 6th gear turns at over 2500 rpm at highway speeds, decreasing fuel economy.

The car went back to dealer two times; one time was the oil change, the other was to ask the question of the restrictor in the fuel tank neck. I haven't experienced any scary stuff that have been post on this review. Except the clock gain one minute a day and the dealer doesn't know how to fix it.

What can I say..yea the fuel economy..however as far as SUVs are concerned it should be a less important issue. Quality I had a simple recall to fix a rubber piece of somekind took about 45 mins to complete. Waiting for the snow to come to really put it through it's paces. Great emergency handleing in wet weather. The V6 has to work to carry the weight but does the job well enough. the S (sport) mode I feel makes a difference. I only wish that they would allow the United States market to receive manual transmissions. It was hard for me to choose between the BMW X5 and this VW. But I had a VW Jetta GLI 6 speed and loved it in the summer, not so happy with it in the winter..but this year....

I have less than 1000 miles on this, and have had numerous problems. It's already had a CD player replaced, different warning lights come on, and stay on. It's had to be towed to the dealership because it wouldn't start. Overall I would NOT recommend this vehicle to anyone. I have always driven a Volkswagen, and this is my first unhappy experience. I am also very unhappy about my "default" settings in the computer of this vehicle. It keeps locking my doors at inappropraite times. The brakes are squishy, and the drive is erratic. It's also a bit sluggish even though it's a V8.

This is by far the best suv we have ever had (6 to date). It is elegant and the v8 delivers more than enough power. highly recommended. complaint is teh navigation system is not on par w/ bmw or lexus and the roof racks cause wind noise at high speeds (we removed teh racks, teh car looks better without them). I spent weeks going over Carlike SUV's and was debating between the VW, Volvo or Acura. The Volvo was too much money with the V-6 engine, but a very nice ride, the Acura had the power, but the interior felt cheap, but the VW, had the luxurious interior and loads of power with the V-8. My only complaint is the gas mileage. Very fun to drive.

This vehicle is absolutely beautiful all around. unique design in and out, with a gorgeous interior (have it in the Teak color & blk exterior, V8). Very quiet drive for an suv, amazing with the air suspension, feels like a sports car in the handling, has options galore included with the V8 model. I love it and have not had any problems at all. Would definitely appreciate better fuel economy, an auto-trunk open and close (b/c it's heavy) but otherwise very pleased with the VW Touareg!

I had been shopping for a SUV for a couple of years and narrowed my search to a Land Rover. My plan was to purchase a 2001 with low mileage. I had tested many with low mileage and was buying based on pedigree and comfort. I was intrigued with VW, it had many good reviews and one day decided to drive the SUV having minimal expectations. I was surprised at the finish, quality, performance, and overall impression of the car. The 6 had enough power for my needs and in my mind decided to confirm my impression with further research. 2 months later I purchased my car. I love the car it s awesome. I can’t say anything to anyone about the SUV that would change this opinion. It handles like my 320 BMW

The refinement, styling and attention to details is what makes me appreciate this car the most. But it is also fast, very fun to drive and versatile enough to take off road or drive to the opera. On the negative: gas mileage is around 14 mpg, I wore through my OEM Continentals in less than 20K miles, and have had a couple of quirky electronic or mechanical problems that have not recurred. Once you learn the subtlties of the "convenience package" it is great to be able to customize the features and settings that are usually factory defaults on other cars.

I have owned many cars and suvs (mercedes, porsche, range rover, bmw, lexus, etc.) It takes a lot in a car to impress me and I can say that this is the most impressive SUV and one of the most impressive vehicles I have ever owned. The build quality and performance are great. It is a vehicle that may not have the eminence of a range rover, but the range rover wishes it could perform all around as well as this vehicle does. Yes there are a few flaws: like no third row and the smelly messy diesel pumps. This is by far one of the best if not the best suv on the planet. you get all of this with an average fuel economy of 22mpg. VW did their homework.

Recieved a custom order 2005 fully loaded V8. This SUV is built solid like a brick. I have 500 miles on it now and it did not have a SINGLE problem wrong with it, not even a hairline scratch on the paint. The car is absoulutely silent, no rattles. Performance on the V8 is great. I am amazed at how fast the V8 gets this heavy vehicle moving at all speeds. It took a while just to read through all of the gadgets and gizmos and find out how everything operates. This is the best vehicle I have ever owned. While not as pure fun to drive as my last vehicle, a C5 Corvette, the Touareg just provides the year round whole package. VW has hit the ball out of the park when it comes to the Toaureg.

After a lot of thought and quite a few tests, we decided to get the Touareg (instead of the Cayenne or the Chevy Tahoe). We are really happy with it. It feels really strong on the highway (great comfort) and specially agile in city driving. Ours (2005 version) is definitely NOT short on power (240hp) as some people said about the 2004 Touareg (220hp). Of course, it responds quickly to the gas pedal, but bear in mind that you are not driving a Mini :) Fuel consumption is about 20mpg on average, much better than we initially thought. This a great SUV. Can't wait to take it off-road without kids and wife ;)

VW has come late to the SUV market, great design, good funtion and a surperb off road vehicle. Here is what they do not tell you about the 2004 SUV of the year! Electronics are overengineered as it relates to warning drivers on a faulty tire presure system, seat belt chimes that do not allow drivers to leave the car running with out being cherped to death, radio's with on-board map system must be cleared everytime you start the car by excepting the disclaimer "release/acceptance" button! Something to look forward to for as long as you have your vehicle. One of the best dummy warnings is the airbag warning, buzzer, then bell/chimes to tell you it is off
