It is very stable on the road and it feels very safe to drive. However, they are lot of problems comes with that model such as the rear lift gate got stuck, transmission problem, the center lock motors problem, the paint peel from the hood and AC stopped working around 110K miles. It cost a fortune to repair these problems. Besides the battery cable got contaminated and almost burnt and requires replacement. All the aforementioned problems are general problems for this model's owners. I completely advise not to buy a used one unless you are rich enough to afford the repairs.

Bought my 2005 Explorer XLT in 2006 with 18K miles on it. My wife drives it for the most part and only has 76K in Jan 2014; it is and has been the PERFECT vehicle. A Utah to Texas trip once a year and normal driving in the city. Prior to reading some of the horror stories below I slept well at night but I will toss and turn tonight. I bought it expecting similar reliability as I did with my '93 F-150 which gave me 225K miles before I sold it but will now look over my shoulder. I do maintain it religiously though, hopefully that explains my experience I can only hope.

I got my explorer as a second vehicle because I was trying to keep my miles low on my 2009 Mazda 6 SI sport fully loaded. At 97K and for my engine to be running as well i t does, I made a good decision. Disadvantage is my transmission doesn't switch as quiclk as my mazda but I deal with it. I wove how I could go outside in the snow and no one else can drive like I can. Overall its a good secondary car and as long as its good to me , ill be good to it.

Recently hit 116k miles. I started driving it around 112k. I drive this SUV as hard as I drive my 2001 Jaguar XJ8. I whip it around corners, accelerate hard, weave it through the twists at high speeds and the Explorer takes it all pretty well... but doesn't give me feedback like the Jag does. It doesn't react, and driving is not enjoyable as much as it is scary. I freak out and feel like I'm losing control of it, something I've never experienced in the XJ8. But the Explorer is resilient. The transmission has handled my coasting-in-neutral practice, high speed travels and incessant shifting well. With my driving style, abominable gas mileage is not just occasional, its expected.

We bought our Explorer in 2005 new. It ran great for 36,000 miles. It now has 68,000 miles. The best gas mileage we have gotten is 18 hwy/11 city with a constant average of 14.6. NOT very desirable. No repairs, just regular maintenance for 3 years. Shortly after 36,000 miles we had problems with the reverse: going into reverse and going from reverse into drive. It would take about 3 to 5 seconds for the gears to catch and move the car. After a new transmission everything else started to go wrong. Interesting that until we took it to the dealer we had no other problems! The blinkers work intermittently, the rear windows work sometimes or NOT and the leather is cracking sides/edges.

We bought this vehicle to tow a 5,500lb boat and it does it easily and safely. We had bad reliability previously with a Ford Windstar and were reluctant to buy Ford again. But the Explorer fit into our garage (vs. the competing & huge GM products with 3rd row seating), had more than adequate tow specs, and had a nimble feel due to the independent supension. 6 yrs and 70,000 miles later we couldn't be happier. It has required only minor repairs, oil, brakes, etc. It rides smooth and quiet at xway speeds and is a powerful tow platform (glad we bought the V8). Gas econ is 16 - 18 which is acceptable given the fact that this is actually a heavy body-on-frame truck vs. the hybrids which are n

We bought our used '05 explorer in late 2006. It is an XLT model with the V6. It does NOT have four wheel drive. So far,it has been an okay form of basic transportation. The interior is boring. Ditto for the exterior. As time has gone on, more things have broken on it,but that's what happens with older cars,so you can't quite say it's a money pit. The fuel economy is below average but not appalling. The worst parts are clearly the ride and the A/C. In Florida, the A/C is the most important feature in any car. Also-the CD player randomly swallowed a disc and won't spit it out. This was an attractive car in '06 but now you would probably be better off setting fire to your money.

Do not buy a 2002-2005 Ford Explorer. Had I read the reviews on the internet under "peeling paint" I would not now own the vehicle with peeling paint along the front hood. It is bubbled and peels off in sections the size of 50 cent pieces. It looks terrible. Mine is not peeling on top or back (YET) but many, many are. The company refuses to do anything about the peeling problem. There are even some articles saying it is about the paint oxidizing and causes it to peel. Still no help from dealerships or company. A five year old car should not be peeling- -no rust the paint is just falling off in chunks. It looks awful! Never will buy another Ford!

We've had the truck since 06 with 20,000 miles we now have 100,000 and have only changed the fluids on it regularly. We had one issue with the heating dial on the dash, but otherwise has been one of the most reliable and solid SUV's we've ever owned including our Toyota and Nissan. We'll probably just keep it, put another 100k on it and pass it on to our kids!

Bought Explorer new. No major problems at all. Some small issues, tire pressure sensor malfunction, gas cap sensor cause service soon light on, but nothing worse in 5 years' time. Never stranded or stalled, been most reliable vehicle so far after bad luck with a few GMs, still runs good as new. Gas mileage not bad for V8, avg 16-19 in town & 22-25+ highway. Comfy interior, good layout. Plenty of power with V8, lots of room (7 passengers) but still feels sporty to drive. Great stereo (have the 6-disc w/ MP3 upgrade)! Overall, love this Explorer!

Pretty good vehicle, but Ford refused to work with me on refixing three problems "supposedly" fixed once under warranty. Can't accept this lack of concern for a loyal customer after spending 41k on original purchase. Will just have to shop elsewhere next time. If this is a common practice with other claims, I can see them losing a lot of business.

I have owned my 2005 Exploder for 2 years. Yeah I said Exploder, because that's what the transmission did. At 39,304 miles and only 5 years old my transmission went belly up. I used to think that these poor reviews were concocted by GM dealers hoping to ruin Fords credibility. Now I have first hand experience with my own transmission nightmare. Stay away from these vehicles. I wasted my time and money babying this vehicle and maintaining all recommended services, because Ford didn't give a diddly squat about my premature transmission failure. By the way there is no dipstick to check transmission fluid levels. Apparently Ford thinks they are bullet proof. HA HA HA HA !

Currently, my ABS light, Advance Trac, and 4x4 lights are on so I'm going to have to get that fixed now. In 2007 - wheel bearings (no big deal). In 2008 - motor blew up. Changed oil every 4,000 - 6,000 miles. In 2009 - transmission was rebuilt. Never buying another Explorer. Never had these problems with a Ford before. My family members worked at a Ford assembly plant so I always bought Fords. This may be my last Ford.

We have had the vehicle for almost 4 years now and almost 78k miles and have had no complaints. We went to the dealer once for noise coming from the front of the vehicle and the dealer new exactly what it was and fixed it on an oil change. Something with the sway bar bushings. We have four kids and the room for seven is great. Here in the midwest we can get some good snow storms and this vehicle can get around with ease. The mileage could be alittle better. We get anywhere from 16-19 mpg depending on the time of the year. Our other vehicle is a 09 Sienna which we love as well, but I can certainly feel more quality with the Toyota, but for what we paid on the explorer it was a great buy

We purchased the vehicle new 4 years ago. We had not had any problems until recently when the car started to stall upon ignition. The transmission light came on and the problems have now begun. We have 146,000 miles on the SUV and really expected to get more before any major problems. Per conversation with Ford service department and an independent transmission company, the prognosis is the torque converter and TCC solenoid (valve body). The cost to repair is $2700 to $6500 before taxes. It is amazing after reading so many reviews that the same problem is evident in the majority of the reviews from those with 70,000 miles or more. We had a Ford car with similar problems before. No more Ford

This is our second Explorer and unless we get one for free, our last. The transmission went out at 35,000. The 4WD computer failed at 40,000. The bearings are bad at 45,000. The back hatch has cracked. It has been a miserable money pit. Had we had much other choice in small V8 we would have selected differently. Ford needs to really upgrade quality and reliability in this model.

Overall, the vehicle has been pretty reliable, but the transmission has been horrible from the get-go. It kicks real hard when going into reverse and response time is super slow at all times. Rear windows stick at times. A crack suddenly appeared next to the ford logo on the back. Have since noticed several other explorers with the same crack. This was my first new vehicle and has not left me with a good impression of American vehicles.

I have heard lots of stories about bad trannies. Changed all my fluids at 30,000. I was told that this might be an important factor in the longevity of the transmission. Mine has always had an annoying jerk going from park into gear even from new. (My 4runner was a smooth bump like it should be) Other than that and the LR window not working all the time it really hasn't given me any problems.

I purchased my Explorer (XLT-V8) new back in 2005, and had a great time with it the first two years. Then last year, started noticing the truck would "lurch" when shifting gears, or going into reverse. It was out of warranty when I took it in to the dealer to have the transmission looked at and was told it would cost me at least $2500 just to have the solenoid replaced and the transmission inspected, with potential additional costs. Took it to Aamco and had the transmission rebuilt. Runs great now, but now the AC comes and goes and cruise control is fickle. Have dumped about $5 grand into it in the last 6 months, and am now looking at trading it in for a Toyota!

I bought the explorer with 60k on it. Had it for 6 months. Loved it at first, until I came back from a long weekend. I went to start my explorer and it didn't start. Finally after about an hour of trying, it started and I had three different dummy lights on. Low oil pressure, 4X4 light, check engine light. Brought it to a mechanic, cost me $350 to fix and even after it was fixed the truck still shook like I was in four wheel drive. Brought it back to the mechanic who couldn't find anything wrong with it. Certainly not my most reliable vehicle. Traded it after only 6 months for a Toyota... Best thing I ever did!

As long as I was not putting too many miles on my Ford, it seemed like a decent vehicle. Now that I have been driving regularly the past six months major problems have occured. First the seat started rocking back and forth, then the transmission started slipping between 2nd and 3rd,now the real winner, the serpentine belt pulley on the harmonic balancer has separated and the belt coming off. Apparently all inherent problems with this vehicle from what I read on the internet.Dealer wants two arms and a leg to fix. Next car; anything but a Ford, GM or Chrysler.

It shifts hard,it feels like it trips, or doesnt know what to do. When slowing down it clunks into a lower gear. Supposedly though dealer says its fine. So put aside tranny and bad mpg Im pleased.

We like the exterior and interior looks, we like the comfort, and tighter-than-most trucks' turning radius, and we like the outstanding five star crash ratings. We bought this new in 2005 and had in shop several times during 36,000 mi warranty for a variety of reasons. Dealership unable to identify weird sound from rear wheel, brakes that comes on after long trips. Decent mileage on road/city: 22/17. Have also experienced rear windows sticking and not able to open in hot TX summer, but working fine now in cooler fall (dealership ignored problem when reported). Now that we're fitting two baby carseats in car, we wish we had more room in backseat so that front seat doesn't have to be pushed forward to fit infant seat. Leather has been great, but experiencing cracking on front seat at sides. Had to replace dealer stereo to accomodate ipod hook- up.

4.2L engine with electronic throttle body. No good. When you break into a corner, and then accelerate out the response time was generally 3 seconds. A member of my gun section worked at dealership told me that Ford is aware of the problem, yet has no new "strategies" for the computer, and had been given no indication as to when fix would come. Transmission was in 4 times in 2 months: 1-2 gear "strategies" reprogrammed, 1-2 gear valve body replaced, milky tranny fluid additive added, 2-3 gear valve body replaced, along with 1-2 valve body again. Went lemon law, was offered a collateral exchange, got a '05 Freestar w/3.9L engine. The van was 100% better than the Explorer.

I purchased my '05 Explorer used with 32,000 miles. Today I have 93,000 and have had only a couple minor problems. A CD was stuck once but after a restart it came right out. The AC/heat blows in on my leg and should be moved to a different location. The fuel mileage is almost 20 MPG with about 800 LBS of gear and an overhead rack. It is a Flex-fuel vehicle but does not perform as well on E-10. The AdvanceTrac is instantly responsive and would buy another just for this feature alone.

Traded in a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo that is sorely missed, for the Explorer in 2006. Instantly regretted the decision. The Explorer is not as comfortable or fun to drive. The gas mileage is worse. There is an electrical problem with the lights that the dealer cannot figure out. The dash cannot be fully lit without the "open door" warning coming on. Now, the rear left window has seized in the down position on a Friday night. It is impossible to manually put the window up, so it cannot be secured until Monday! I miss my Jeep!

We've only had this a few weeks but I am completely in love with this vehicle. I had a Toyota Corolla before, and I hated being so low and vulnerable, and putting my daughter in the backseat was always a chore due to its low ground clearance. The Explorer handles amazingly well, and I really like that it's equipped with stability control and has independent rear suspension. The running boards are a great feature, and I really like the leather. Some people had issues with it being poor quality, but our particular vehicle is already 3 years old, and the leather looks to be in great shape still with no cracking or tears. I love the third row seat, and I love how much space there is.

This is my third Explorer. I had a '98 that the transmission had to be rebuilt at 70K. Unfortunately, I was hit and it was totaled soon after. I bought a 2002. Started getting transmission warning lights at 36K. At 69K Ford finally admitted they can't find the problem and bought it back. I got a marginally OK deal if I bought a 2005. At 35K the converter went while I was on vacation. Spent part of my vacation sitting in the dealership and had to rent a car. I got the car back in time to return home. Back with Ford 3 times for the same problem in the next 3 mos. Now at 65K the trans is overheating and leaking. I am waiting for the diagnosis from the dealer. MY LAST FORD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have owned my XLT for 2.5 years. It has 41,000 miles on it. Nothing mechanical has broke down. The leather seats were replaced at 34,000 miles due to excessive cracking..no questions asked by Ford. The original Michelin tires had to be replaced at 30,000 miles. It has been a good car. There is a weird vibraton noise under the driver's seat. I have not had any other issues...handles like an SUV, but still a good contender for the mid- size SUV buyer. I might consider the Toyota 4Runner next time simply because it keeps its value better.

I've had this Explorer for almost 3 yrs without any problems except for one minor problem with the cd player..the cd got stuck in it...they fixed it for me immediately with no charge. Actually I love this car but because of the poor gas mileage I am going to get something else when my lease expires. The pickup is great, good brakes and good road feel. I feel very safe in this car.

I've had my '05 almost three months, traded in a 98' 2WD with 96k and very few problems. The greatest disapointment is the terrible gas mileage-14.2 avg. is the best I've had so far. My 2WD got 17-20 mpg on avg. which ends up being aprox. 2 fillups a week vs. every 1 1/2-2 wks. with 2WD, Knew 4WD would be worse but not that much difference. Would not recommend this vehicle to anyone on a tight budget

My second Explorer, first one did not have any issues. Bought it used with 30000 miles on it. Driveshaft was vibrating, dealer replaced, worked OK to 40000 miles when check transmission light came on. Dealer spent two weeks repairing, cost was covered by extended warranty. After the repair rear differential began to make noise. Also shifting was not as smooth as it used to be. Have decided to trade it in.

Had my Explorer for 2 years. Very dependable. Love the body style. Love leather but the 2005 Explorer leather seats are not good. Cracked and looked unkempt within the first year. Would like to see improved gas mileage. Thought it would be better on the V6 than what I am getting. The V8 does just as well. Would I buy another one? Yep, probably so. Overall I really enjoy my Explorer.

Having already taken a ride in the Toyota 4Runner (small headroom) and the Chevy Trailblazer (engine whine), I decided to hop into an '05 Explorer. And I'm glad I did. The driving experience is a remarkable upgrade from the '97 Explorer. It's a very easy vehicle to drive and maintain (cheap insurance compared to 4Runner). Also, I'm getting about 19.1 MPG with a 65% highway, 35% city driving experience which is great compared to the Tahoe.

All around great value, fun to drive and reliable vehicle. I have looked at many other vehicles including sedans since purchasing this one tempting myself to trade, but every time I come to the same conclusion that my Explorer was a tremendous value and that I would be trading down or drastically overpaying for something else. I don't know if the great deals are still out there but it was impossible at the time for any other dealer to come even close to the price/value of the Explorer XLS.

LOVE my Explorer. Tons of spunk, can leave almost any other vehicle sit at a stoplight with my 4.6 v8. Previous cars were a Crown Vic, Mark VIII and a 95 Cougar all with the 4.6 v8, but only a 4 speed tranny. The 5 speed tranny on the Explorer utilizes the power of the 4.6 much more efficiently between 40 & 80 mph. Don't drive much - got this for hauling my birds and cats. The flat fold of the back seat makes hauling all the pet carriers much easier.

A year ago I traded in a Toyota Camry for a Ford Explorer, a mistake I will not soon forget. Explorer was fine for about 6 months. Since then, I've had a check engine light, ABS light, and Battery Light come on all the time. Dealership has "fixed" the issue twice. Also, there is a noise and vibration coming from under the driver's seat and the dealer cannot figure it out. The leather Ford used in the XLT model is awful - I have cracks everywhere. Also, my wife has a Buick Rainier V8 suv and she gets better gas mileage than I do in a V6...go figure? I will never buy another Ford product, nor do I recommend them to anyone.

Underpowered, fuel eating V-6. Not very comfortable to drive, blinker lights go to signal detent too easily when you select them for changing lanes. R\rear window wiper switch hard to locate and turn on. Power seat buttons hard to operate without opening door. You can feel the torque converter or something like it when you slow down from 70 to 55; same with going down a steep hill. Rear hatch leaks when it rains. All in all in my opinion this is not such a great vehicle for the money.

I was pleasantly surprised when I test drove my Ford. It has everything I need or want in a vehicle - with the exception of good gas mileage. I can now take my whole family on road trips! I traded in my 2005 Mustang for the Explorer and I am very happy - they get the same gas mileage anyway - and I will be safer in the winter when I can take full advantage of the 4WD and there is sooo much more room!

Well I sold my 1997 Ford Explorer with 292,000 that was an excellent car and bought an 05 with 4x4. My job is very hard on my car. I drive up the side of mountains, through mud holes, over steep sharp rocks, and through swampy areas. My Explorer has been in the Rocky Mountains, Nebraska fields, and Wyoming plains in winter covered in snow. I put an average of 40,000 miles a year on my Ford. I now have 62,000 miles and my Explorer has always gotten me home. I hit a large mudhole one night at 3am and spun the truck sideways and i hit a pole, nearly rolled it, smashed 2 windows, my hood, a fender, and 1 tire. I patched the tire and it got me home 30 miles. Very dependable.

I bought my Explorer about 6 months ago. It's a decent car for the money, though I do have my gripes about it. The biggest problem I have is that the leather seats have already worn a lot, and the car only has 8K miles on it. I had a 2000 Mountaineer with 80K miles on it and those seats were in better condition than this one already. Also, my mom has an SUV with a V8 and she's getting better gas mileage than me ... Ford could stand to take a few notes there.

I tested the Toyota 4Runner and Honda Pilot but chose this truck because I do some towing and have had great success with this model. We cart our 2 golder retrievers around a lot and they seem comfortable when we lower all the rear seats. I'm not necessarily a Ford person since our other vehicle is a Toyota Matrix but I rely heavily on consumer magazines and websites when we are doing research for a new vehicle.

This is our first new Ford vehicle since 1965! Prior vehicle to this, 1994 Toyota T100 4x4. Prior to Toyota 1989 Chevy 2500 4x4. Chevy sent us to Toyota, problems galore on the Chevy truck, purchased Chevy, Toyota, and Ford new. Son suggested a Ford for replacement of our Toyota, noting past positive experience with Explorers at his job. Purchased under Ford "Friends and Family" program, Explorer was price of '06 Escape (was going to buy Escape, but no '05's left, and no deal on '06's). What a pleasant upgrade from other vehicles owned in the past. V6 4.0 has lots more power than V6 3.0 the T100 had, plus turning circle is much much tighter.

I wasn't quite sure about buying a Ford, but I was completely blown away when I test drove it. It is so comfortable, the refinement of the engine, transmission, the ride is all wonderful. Ford did a great job on the Explorer and Ii now know why I have seen so many on the road.

Mine is an '02 that has had a vibration problem that turned out to be a crankshaft that let loose at 40,000 miles. The 6 disc changer has been changed out and needs it again. The 4x4 unit went out early and ABS was at the same time as the rearend that was said to need a ring and pinion and then to find out it was rear bearings. Other small things like seat belts not retracting and the material on the door sides delaminating were only minor nuisances. Like the look.

This car was provided by my employer for work. We have had it in the shop 3 times and going on 4 due to the gas gauge not working. Dealer says Ford knows about the problem and hasn't been able to find a permanent fix and also there are not enough cars with the problem to issue a recall. We were told to try different gas and a fuel additive (said it sometimes works on other ones), problem is employer provides gas via their own gas station which results in us having to pay more for gas, just for the chance that that will correct the problem. Since it is unreliable, I use my own car so I don't get stranded. I would not recommend a Ford product due to them not willing to correct the issue.

(Doesn't hurt that both my husband and son are "Ford men"). Am so happy with '05 that I've already gone to dealership to check into getting an '06. Got good price on Explorer after negotiation, but sure wish I had waited and cashed in on all the incentives that have been occurring lately -- but who knew, right? Also test drove and considered an Acura MDX, Mercedes SUV, Chevy Tahoe, Honda Pilot, Toyota 4-Runner, Cadillac Escalade (in addition to Jeep Grand Cherokee) but the Explorer ultimately won out.

The only true complaints about my Explorer have to do with why they put carpet in a four wheel drive. Out of the box my Explorer has never left me stuck for more than a minute. I just would back up and charge again! I bought the beast for Sierra snows when my job had me there for a year, but this thing cruises down the interstate so smooth that it is hard for some people to realize just how tough terrain is so easy in the Explorer. I average 19-20 mpg, with the worst being 16 mpg during an off road adventure trip.

Purchased as Ford began their employee pricing plan for all. The Explorer originally wasn't on the list, but I was surprised after driving one. I considered the Pathfinder, 4-Runner and other 6-7 passenger mid-sized SUVs. It accelerated as well, rides as well, handles as well and looks as good as all other truck based SUVs on the market. I don't do any heavy offroading so it is perfect for the fishing trail or snow covered road. I traded an Murano for this vehicle due to problems with the Murano and the fact that it could not handle the occasional fishing trail. I added a NAV system, new air intake and exhaust to complete the package. You can not get a better vehicle for the price.

I've had my Explorer about a week now :) and it's awesome. It's a great ride. I'm nice and high up and can see EVERYTHING! I love the message center, since I'm totally inept when it comes to automotive things; like checking the levels -- it checks levels for me! The interior is beautiful, I have cloth seats, no bells or whistles really, but even the basic is great. I'm still on my tank from the dealer, and I'm kind of scared to fill her up, but since I'm gaining safety and height I guess it's ok. And it is a midsize SUV after all, wouldn't expect to fill up for $30. And it's not bad, it makes you take it easy. So basically, while there are these family plans, go out and get an Explorer! You'll love it!

Great deal for the car. Good rebates were given. This SUV is nice; has a smooth ride to it. Not too bad on gas. If you’re looking for an SUV this is a great start. it's not too big and yet big enough for the family and pets. Lots of pick up and go on the expressway. And it looks good. Love the new color. I got (Darkstone) with metal flakes.

Had an Expedition, sold it and bought a car (mistake), sold that and I'm back to Ford. After researching and test driving I bought my Explorer and I love it! Couldn't beat what I got for the money. An import SUV with the options I got would have been thousands more. And I love the look of my truck. Runs great, the higher seating and better visibility, the cool look of chrome! Just plain fun to drive. If you're a mom looking for an SUV to handle your family make sure you check out the Explorer.

The 360 degree view from the drivers seat is excellent. Handling and performance is much better than I thought it would be even when loaded with 7 adults. The DVD/With headsets and dual sound keeps teenage carping to a minimum. My 69 year old wife loves to drive it and feels more safe due to the excellent visibility and the greater frame height. Teenage grandsons rate it as "really cool".

At first I really wanted a V8 Explorer but the are like finding a needle in a haystack at a dealership around here. The V6 has decent power just wish the fuel economy was better. Fit and finish on the vehicle is pretty good except for some solvent popping on the hood. The leather interior is great and I would highly recommend it. The Audiophile sound system is second to none in the sound department. The display on the radio just needs to get in the 21st century. vehicle is smooth and quiet to drive on both the city and the highway.

I am delighted with this SUV. I previously had a 2001 Mitsubishi Montero Sport 2WD and a Chevy Blazer 2WD. The V-8 power is great. It far surpasses both the Montero and the Blazer. The luggage area is bigger than all of the other SUVs we looked at. The Explorer has all of the features of a luxury car with the towing ability and 4x4 off-road features.

For the price (MRSP $35,300), purchased for $25,454; that can't be beat. Very well built compared to any domestic brand. The only other SUV I would consider over this would be the Honda Pilot, but that costs more for the same features and no rebates. Second Ford, not sure of any problems, the 1st (Mustang '04 GT) had a few. Do hear a weird whinny/whistling sound from time to time and only has 1200 miles in two months so it worries me. Found two interior bits not well attached. The GT was plagued with that too.

I have driven the Honda Pilot, Toyota 4Runner, and the Chevy Tahoe and my Explorer tops them all. It's roomy; you don't feel cramped like you do in the 4Runner (low roof line). The interior design is simple, easy to understand, and has so much room for storage. The back seats fold flat giving huge cargo room. Drives great, steering is very responsive, and there is little road noise. Never had any problems other than a recall on the back window hinges.

I thought I was a Jeep man for life (I drove a Grand Cherokee for the last 7 years), but I ended up in this Explorer, and I love it. The ride is excellent, the V6 is strong enough for my needs, and it sits higher than I expected. I especially love the third seat. When my kids are back there, I can barely hear them. Especially if I am thumping the Audiophile system. The only negative is the fuel mileage. It is only getting 15 mpg average, and that hurts. Overall, a great truck.

I'm pretty aggressive with my speed and the vehicle handles great. In the past four years I've never had a repair needed on any of my Explorers. Just a lot of oil changes and gasoline fill ups.

Far superior to previous generations of Explorers; independent rear suspension, gyro roll, yaw, and traction control, digital fuel mileage and remote tire pressure sensing (little transmitters in the valve stems) are features you just can't find for less than $21,000 with the great deals going on right now. Nimble, fun to dive and so quiet at idle, I have to look at the tach to make sure its running. Highway mileage (22.5) is OK, but it will take years to worry about it with the fabulous discounts they're giving right now. Having owned over 50 cars, I'm not blowing smoke when I recommend this one for the money. Great time to walk away on some old junk, especially if you have cash.

I am thoroughly enjoying my Ford Explorer! A friend of mine and I recently drove our vehicles, loaded with high school-aged kids, to a conference in Pennsylvania (approximately 600 miles one way). The kids who traveled in my vehicle were comfortable throughout the trip and upon arrival to our destination were ready to go! There were absolutely NO COMPLAINTS. The kids in the other vehicle felt cramped due to lack of space, were bored, and tired upon arrival. As the driver, I enjoyed every minute of the trip. I recently had a serious back surgery, yet I was comfortable throughout the trip and arrived at our destination with plenty of energy to spare. The other driver....well....

After driving my 2000 Explorer to exhaustion, I shopped 11 different models before I repurchased the Explorer. I thought I wouldn't like the 2005 as much, but it has turned out to be better than ever. After 5 months, I love the ride, great power, and gas mileage is better than I expected: 70% city/30% hwy = avg 16.1 MPG. If I had bought another model, I would have given up many of the features I love from the 2000 AND my new 2005 has even more features. I think Ford has done an excellent job and this model was thought through well. I practically live out of my vehicle and I'm pleased with every aspect of it. It is roomy and has the extra features of a luxury car, without a luxury premium.

There are a lot of reviews bashing some really minor points about this car. But, face it, this is just looking for reasons to complain. For $22K or less you get a solid, safe well built, good looking car. I use mine for towing a bass boat and it is like the boat is not even there. This car puts all other SUV's to shame in terms of value for money. Ok, it does not have a chrome plated steering wheel. Who cares. Go pay an extra $15k and you can have one along with the high priced maintenance. You can't go wrong. I love my Explorer.

First SUV; wanted towing and hauling room otherwise would have gotten another sport car. Handling is excellent, turning radius surprisingly small, seats excellent, love the leather, annoying helicopter sound when sunroof open, needs the step bar for entrance, adjustable petals good choice, digital readout excellent. I'm very picky about what I drive and the handling ability. I love this SUV. Only a few negatives. Need more leg room on door side, bad door design, not enough room in cargo area, floor isn't flat with seat down, transmission makes annoying pause when shifting, but getting use to it, good head room, rides well on long trips, feels safe

This vehicle has the needs to fit a family on the go. Never thought I would own a 4-door until we drove test drove our first. Other brands we test drove have been rattle traps. Many "Fordisms", however, i.e. shifter on the column, fixed external wire antenna, truck like passenger seats, class II hitch, lousy radio, aesthetically challenged control panel. Minor issues if remedied would go a long way and bring the truck to the next level. Buy it to fulfill your basic transportation needs.

Had two Jeeps prior to buying a 1999 Grand Cherokee in May of 1999. It became a nightmare. Fortunately I bought the extended warranty; 6 sets of front brakes by 56K, rear axle, hood & tailgate springs, air conditioner 4 times, etc. Traded it for a 2004 Explorer in August of 2004. Explorer has been a pleasure, routine maintenance only, nice ride, lot of room, third seat helpful, took it back and forth to Florida, good trip car, have the "6" would suggest the "8" if you do highway driving or towing. Would buy another one but would get the 8 cylinder.

This was purchased for my significant other, who uses it for her work. She picked out the truck, which is a well equipped Eddie Bauer, with V8. There are two chief complaints, the ride is "bouncy" which she likes, but I don't feel like I have as good of control of the vehicle as I do on other SUVs. The other major complaint is the motor sounds like a sewing machine or a threshing machine and is quite loud from under the hood. Other, less important concerns are, the rear seat controls are very stiff (possibly because it is new) and difficult for a diminutive woman to use. Dash and radio controls are confusing.

Gets lots of looks, and has the upgraded stereo that sounds great. Best sounding radio I have ever heard in a factory Ford. Had my doubts about the V-6 but it has plenty of power, although if I was going to do much pulling I would go with the V-8, but only 20 or so horse power difference. All the power the wife need to carry the baby and groceries.

I recently looked over several SUV'S by different auto manufacturers. Was looking for a roomy, safe, comfortable, reliable, and smooth-riding model. Came to find out that, dollar for dollar, there is nothing better offered for sale, foreign or domestic. Not talking about exotic, show-offy gas burning models designed to impress people with money to throw away. Drove it to Florida and back from the northeast and had the most comfortable and satisfying ride, and I've made the trip several times. Plenty of cargo room and great mileage on the highway. A solid choice - you can't go wrong.

This is my fourth Explorer, 2005 Limited - tried and true! Did not look for any other models when replacing my 2002 Ford Explorer Limited. The only improvements that I would recommend would be the gas mileage, a cell phone and possibly navigation system. It does take Ford slightly longer to get with the updated designs and features. With the success of this model they should be the cutting edge of technology in the automobile business. My other car is a 2005 BMW 745IL.

Two kids in car seats makes life in a sedan quite tight. Upgrading to bigger vehicle was a difficult choice. It was either a minivan or an SUV. So the Explorer made the decision easy. Its practical and can take the abuse from my kids. For the $25K I spent for it I don't feel bad when they are messing up the car with juice or Cheerios. Adequate power, adequate options and adequate comfort.

It is an expensive car and silly us, we expected good quality and service. It is a real shame considering that we owned an Explorer before this car (and many other Ford cars) and trusted the brand and dealership. Not anymore. After owning the new $35K car for only four months, the dimmer switch went bad, smelling of burnt rubber whenever the lights were on. The smell was choking and we couldn't even drive the car. The dealership wouldn't even give us a loaner car during the repair! Now 4 weeks later, the smell in the car is back, and the lights are blinking. They gave us a hard time again about a loaner car. Poor dealership service. Poor reliability. We are very disappointed in Ford

This is a comfortable and easy to handle SUV with excellent road mileage -- has been taken on numerous trips back and forth to beach (approx. 300 miles round trip). Excellent cargo space and comfortable seating for up to 7 people.

Living in the Texas Hill Country made driving my C 5 Corvette a lot of fun, but I got tired of being surrounded by huge SUVs and pickups. A base Explorer seemed to be the safe, not too big and not too expensive, choice. Making an SUV attractive is sort of like putting earrings on a hog. You can only hide so much ugly, but Ford did a commendable job with the Explorer.

This is my 3rd Explorer, and the best one yet. Ford did their homework on this one. I ordered it with the V8 and am getting 17.5 MPG overall. Very happy with the vehicle and highly recomend it to anyone.

I was especially surprised how well the stability control worked in the snow. We got a ton of snow recently and when I looked out the window I began to regret not getting the 4x4 option. Anyway, out in the snow I went... The explorer's RSC option kept the veh going in a straight line without swerving and tight in the corners without the rear going out. I was really pleased, why didn't Ford have this before.

we love our explorer!! we went from a station wagon to an suv and we could not have picked a better vehicle. only negative is the gas mileage. we love the third row seat and the convience of getting in and out of it.

I drive two vehicles, my C5 Corvette and an SUV. I had a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee, but I never really warmed up to it. It leaned a LOT in curves and gave poor gas mileage. Front leg room was inadequate. The interior was very nice and the highway ride was fine. My 2005 Explorer rides much better, is quicker (though relative when referring to SUVs), and handles far better than my Jeep. It is quiet, smooth riding and has a super stability system. It has more cargo room than the Jeep. Gas mileage is very good for an SUV. I have averaged 21.6 in mixed driving. The Jeep I6 gave me 16 -17 mpg. The five speed automatic is smooth and seems to anticipate my next move. I like my explorer.

After having two previous Explorers, we decided to test drive some other 2005 brands to compare. Toyota 4- Runner-next best. Nissan Pathfinder- loud engine and tire noise and rode like a truck!! BMW X-5-what were those Germans thinking? Noisy and harsh ride!! Mercury Mariner- a beefed up Escape, harsh ride and small. Land Rover LR-3,let me buy a lake cabin instead! None of these would compare to the ride quality, noise insulation and overall handling tightness of the 2005 Explorer. Then add the 4.6 V-8 and it is true perfection. Status symbol(NO), but you keep your radical fender flares and tri-star emblems on your foreign SUV's. As for me I'll keep my Ford!!

This is a vehicle supplied to me from my employer. It is a lot of fun to drive and also very comfortable. Both interior and exterior appointment blend nicely. My only complaint is the dealership. The running board is a third party one and no by Ford. It is narrow and has actually been put on backwards by the dealership. They say they will fix it, but that was two weeks ago... and nothing. The second complaint is that the car was supposed to come with factory mats and they weren't. Again, Framingham Ford promised to get me factory mats ASAP. It's been over a month and still no mats, despite follow up phone calls. This is my second experience with "don't care" Ford Dealerships!

YOU CAN TELL WHEN YOU DRIVE THIS CAR IT WAS MADE AND DESINGED IN AMERICA. YOUR TYPICAL AMERICAN MADE CAR, WE MAKE THEM REALLY NICE BUT AS THEY SAY ITS WHATS ON THE INSIDE THAT COUNTS. IM SO UNHAPPY WITH THIS CAR ITS BEEN IN THE SHOP TWO TIMES IN FOUR MONTHS. I SHOUDA, WODA, BOUGHT A HONDA OR TOYOTA I WANTED TO BE PRO AMERICAN BIG MISTAKE.

Wouldn't it be nice if automobile manufacturers got back to satisfing a customer and not just making money. The Ford Explorer is an ok, suv but unless you want to spend the extra 5-10k for the eddie bauer eddition the XLS is not worth your money.
