This car served me well for 10 years 11 months and 174,000 miles. Reliable from start to "finish". Routine maintenance is a bit expensive. Only mechanical failure was a U joint in drive shaft at 153,000 miles. When timing belt was originally replaced at 82,500 miles also replaced head gaskets. Did not do so when timing belt was replaced at 165,000 miles and at 168,000 miles a very slight oil leakage began (to the tune of 1 quart per 3,000 miles.) Decided to trade in at 174,000 miles. This car went to 28 of our 50 states.

This is the pioneer and last of the true sport crossovers. There are a lot of copycats nowadays, but this one is the real thing. Manual tranny, 4.44FD, AWD with 50/50 torque split, big STI engine 2.5L, factory turbo with low compression pistons, disc brakes, LSD and fully independent suspension. Sti parts are all swappable. All parts from the WRX and STI fit into this vehicle since they share the platform. Tons of aftermarket parts available and can make to go very fast for a small amount of money. Plus using OEM parts. Great sleeper vehicle. This is not a car for nannies. If your intent is to buy a car and just put gas in it and forget everything else, this is not the car for you. Change PM parts and the car will reward you with a great bargain and longetivity.

2004 Subaru Forester "Burt"

I bought my Forester X "Burt" used in July 2011 from a Subaru Dealer in Rockland County, NY with 107K miles on it. I now have 120K miles on it. It has proven to be a reliable and surprisingly comfortable vehicle. I average about 18 mpg in the city, and around 28 mpg on the highway. This car is one of the most "honest" cars I've ever owned. It just works without fuss or fanfare, and feels solid. I Have done nothing but oil changes, a differential and tranny fluid change, tire rotations, and inspections for maintenance, and Burt goes like a top! I hope to buy a new 2014 Subaru Forester based on my experience with this one, and I am one of the most "brand unloyal" owners out there!

Expensive parts, noisy on highway, worst car I ever had.

I bought this car used in 2009. In three years, I spend $2400 in repairs (rear bearings on both sides, head gasket, rocker bars in the front that were recalled, air conditioner compressor) and when I traded it in today for a 2012 Camry, the turbo was smoking and the transmission was on it's way out too. It had 140K miles. Parts are hard to come by, none of the charging ports worked on it and the check engine light was always coming on, which turned off the cruise control. in three years, I got to use the cruise control once. It was a nightmare to own. It was almost impossible to talk on speakerphone on the highway due to the road noise. and the backseat doesn't have any legroom.

A niche car, but fits perfectly in it.

I've owned my Forester XT for 6 years now, and it has been a very fun car. The only repair I've had is the alternator. It's far faster than it looks and I love being able to floor it on the highway in 5th and it just goes. It looks good, carries a fair amount of stuff when I go camping, and is great in the snow.

Generally speaking, it is a great small utility vehicle that that drives like a car. It is an excellent winter vehicle, but it is not best for highway driving. It lacks power for comfortable passing, and down-shift is on the slow side. And, highway wind and road noise are on the noisier side. I took it for a 4000mile/6000km drive from Canada to California. It handled nicely when it was +24C and during winter blizzard when I-15 got closed for hours. I haven't had major problems with the vehicle, except sunroof does no longer work. And, parts and service are a bit expensive, especially in Canada.

This car is well thought of for some people. I don't understand why. There are too many good alternatives to this car to buy another one. Normal recommended maintenance is expensive and add in wheel bearings and head gaskets and it's like buying another car. The car is marketed for harsh weather and service, but it doesn't seem to be built for it. Before buying search on head gaskets and wheel bearings and see if you still want one.

Purchased the car based on Consumer reviews. Car has lived in the shop: valves, clutch, brakes, radio, etc. The car handles well but no power and no room for kids. Most expensive car I've ever owned based on days in shop and dollars in repairs. I keep cars for 10+ years but looking forward to parking this one under a tree and walking away from it. Subaru dealerships have a lot of swagger about the belief of what they read in consumer reports. Unfortunately this attitude makes it "your fault" that the valves fail after 60 k miles and be prepared for very long waits for parts. Took 3 weeks to get in a new rear windshield wiper arm. None of the needed work has been under warranty.

Gas mileage just plain bad, I got the same mileage, 13 mpg, with a 2006 8 cylinder hemi daytona with 360 hp. This has great hp for a 4 cylinder and is very fun wagon to drive. The leather seating is well done. Tilt wheel would raise the comfort level. Better quality front seat back handle control needed. Near perfect interior-exterior design. Window whistle at 45 mph annoying, need window frames. Sacrificing quality for weight savings don't work for me, the aluminum hood takes a beating on the highway. The expensive to fix cd changer radio is a let down.

This car is great except for fuel and maintenance costs. Plugs only last 50000 and cost 300-400 to replace due to complexity of the flat design and the turbo plumbing. Most recently I had a raw gas odor requiring replacement of fuel hoses which required removing the intake manifold for repairs. Also found an air turbo intake hose with a hole in it ($100).

I bought the car new and liked it with respect to driving and its AWD feature. What owners should be aware of is that this is a high maintenance vehicle. Parts like the wheel bearing fail prematurely (<60,000 miles) and can go on undetected for months and years and mistaken as just tire noise. Repair cost is >$450 per wheel.

This little SUV with the Turbo will move when I need it to. It's so handy to haul items, easy to fold seats down, easy to remove the headrests. I love the auto climate control, great stereo. I have great control of car in adverse weather conditions - I feel SAFE driving this car. Doors feel solid when you shut them.

I enjoy my Forester but the paint (black) has not held up well at all. I thought Subaru was built for harsh weather. I live in the south - no snow and ice here. My driver's seat has a tear in the "leather" trim. My goal is to drive the car until it has 200K miles. I am guessing that I will have no paint left by that time. I took the car back to the dealer before the warranty expired and they could not help me with the paint. Are you kidding me - my next car will not be a Subaru for this reason alone.

Great car. Currently at 120,000 miles. The only major problem was leaky head gaskets which I think is an inherent defect in the engine. But easily fixed for less than $1000. Otherwise the best car I have ever owned. On my way to 200,000 miles and beyond.

I have had my 04 XS for 5 years now, generally speaking, it's a good car. It is reliable and gets 28-30 mpg highway, front seats are comfortable, back seats are tight, car is sporty and stylish, great traction in bad weather, massive sunroof, BUT...this car has problems. From day 1, car bucks after filling with gas (dealer can't explain), wind noise on highway is horrendous, check engine light goes on and off at will, moving drivers seat causes airbag light to go on, sunroof track broken-they want $1500 bucks to replace, vibration from engine Y-pipe drives us crazy (dealer again can't fix), now the rear end has a very loud humming noise as if its about to go. Car only has 62k miles.

Bought this in October of 2008. Pretty fun to drive. Handles great on the road. Plenty of cargo space. Works great with rack on top. Leather feels good. Solid car inside with no squeaks despite all the compartments. I've heard some people complain about the back seat. I don't think it's that bad considering it's a car. Have yet to really test the all wheel drive at my lake house. Can't wait.

I bought this car after extensive research in 2003. It was down to the Honda Element vs. the Forester XT and the power won out. This is the first car I've had that I can honestly say I've used most of it's capabilities regularly. I'm no street racer but I do enjoy the acceleration and handling of this little SUV. I usually travel by myself or with my young son and it's just the right size. I've had it off road on the beach and on dirt trails - no complaints and it's easy to maneuver. It towed my 17ft Boston Whaler nicely as well. However, for family road trips we take my wife's Pilot - more room.

I do not give this vehicle 10s across the board, but I give it a 10 in what I was looking for. It is not fast. It produces lots of wind noise. It doesn't corner particularly well. It does provide amazing versatility, functional all-wheel drive, and plenty of room for storage. I am an outdoorsy type. I take this vehicle camping, hunting, fishing, biking, and for long distance traveling. I have driven this through sand, mud and water. I accidentally went through an innocuous looking puddle that came up over the hood, and the Forester pulled right through. Am very happy with the Forester and will drive it until the wheels fall off, or I do, whichever comes first.

The only warranty work I had done was to replace the CD changer and rear view mirror. My only complaint is the very loud road noise. It's a great car that can definitely move when you want it to.

Love the versatility of the vehicle. Like handling, but lacking power IMO. Passing other vehicles is often a challenge, which is my major concern. And, turbo is much more expensive to drive. Maintenance is on the expensive side. Sunroof doesn't open/close properly. Dealership was unable to determine exact cause after 1 hr inspection. Another mechanic found trickling current in the power circuit suspecting a failing diode in the alternator. Dealership tested and said that it is okay. Suspicious. Don't take vehicle to the dealership anymore. Central console plastic is easy to scratch. Rattles inside are annoying. Overall, good vehicle.

Want a wagon to haul stuff? Want to do some light off-roading? Want to smoke that 350Z sitting at the light next to you? The Forester can do it all! I am on my second Forester and am now a die-hard Subaru fan. My 04 XT is a nicely put together vehicle with nice materials, but most importantly, smoking performance. I smile just thinking about pushing my Foz through the corners and speeding away from lights. I like it, my kids like it, and even the wife likes to take it out for a spin! This was my 2nd Subaru and it will surely be my last. I should have known better after our '93 Legacy wagon broke 2 timing belts, blew a head gasket, and needed both front wheel drive axles replaced-all before 36,000 miles. Nevertheless, I traded it on a new '04 Forester 2.5X because it was the best deal we could get. Never again! The right front wheel well liner came loose and fell out before 10,000 miles. The transmission began to give us trouble at 15,000 miles. The whole car vibrated while turning even though we faithfully had it serviced & the tires rebalanced and rotated every 3,000 miles at the dealers. The windows leaked and whistled in the wind whenever you exceeded 35 MPH. Junk!!!

A great car in most aspects except paint. Have commuted 110 miles round trip for years with Hondas. The Subaru paint on the front plastic components has become heavily pitted from bugs in spite of frequent washings. Looks trashy on the front. Now I am getting a milky residue on the entire exterior. No known exposure to air borne pollutants. Waxed regularly. Washed predominantly by hand with proper washing materials. The black pearl paint looks great except it shows both of these blemishes rather dramatically. Subaru only offered to pay 1/2 cost of bumper repainting. A real disappointment.

I bought a silver Forester because of the snow and ice we get in Eastern Oregon. This car exceeded expectations. I never got below 25 MPG on the hwy, and around 22 in town. When "Chains Required" signs are posted on the interstate, this car buzzed past all the cars chaining up. Subaru is amazing for their safety and high quality. Because my son survived an extreme accident with only bruises I can endorse this car fully. I'm not saying another car wouldn't have performed as well. But this Subaru when put to the test, passed with flying colors.

This car is a 10 all round. It may seem strange that I gave all 10's but this is purely in consideration of the type of car it is. For performance for example, some may say that it is slow, especially for 165 hp. However, in any conditions with poor traction, it is absolutely essential for good performance (ie not sliding off the road) that power delivery isn't snappy and immediate. Handling is surprisingly good for the type of car it is and this must in part be due to the low center of gravity of the boxer engine.

I'll keep going back to Subaru!

My second Forester was the 2004 and it was such a good, solid car. I've listened to so many "regular car" drivers complain about snow, ice, etc. I never had those problems with this Forester or the one I traded in to get this one (1998). Just traded it in for a Legacy which I love, but I do miss all the storage cubbies in the Forester! I really love the Subaru line - so many things that are "extra" in other brands are "standard" for Subaru, such as carpeted mats, keyless remote, etc. Between that, the AWD, and a good dealership, I'm a Subaru owner for life!

I love it! I love it! I love it!

Did my research before buying my Subie. Used to drive 4X4 Cherokee 4.0L. Rented one for a few weeks to test it properly, but it wasn't a turbo. Test drove the new 2004 Turbo and bought it on the spot. Has every feature possible and most accessories. I changeover my tires Winter(use Toyo Walnut shell composite)/Summer( still have my factory tires). The AWD, antilock brakes and low center of gravity has proven to be an extremely stable, safe and solid vehicle for me. I would buy the same again in a NY minute. Love the rearview mirror with autodimmer and compass. Love the weatherband radio! Love leather smells awesome everytime I sit down. Love the great big sunroof, increases my big sky country!

I migrated from a Jeep 6 cyl to the Subaru Forester XT. I was looking for comfort, safety, power, and a great looking ride. I saw my Subie and fell in love. I added the smart mirror and command start, the only two options not already there. The defrosting and seat warmers and that fact my car is smart enough to blow cold air in the winter initially means I never have foggy windows. How much more could I ask for? I'm so glad I made the choice for this head turning vehicle. Each time I fill I am asked about Subie. I draw unusual attention when I cart my 16 foot canoe on top the factory racks.

Plenty of room for almost everything including 4 adults. Great visibility and very maneuverable in town due to its small turning radius. Excellent comfort. Cabin layout and seats are perfect. Car is very stable, especially for something so high off the ground. 5speed has relatively short throws and the entire shifting process is very smooth. Excellent car. The build feels solid, I have owned this car for about 2 years now with no problems at all. The all wheel drive combined with the 210 hp turbo engine is great in the hills. This car is awesome in the snow, never any problems at all navigating in snow. It also grips well in dry and wet weather, I feel very safe in this car. Excellent ground clearance, never any issues on mtn roads. The interior seems solid, no creaks or rattles or anything falling apart. I think for the money you can't get a better car.

85,000 miles and no failures or repairs. This car has been rock-solid from the very beginning and shows no signs of slowing down. The turbo motor makes for some fun driving but I can also get 24-25 mpg on highway cruises. Visibility is top-notch and the built-in safety features are a huge plus. It's not the prettiest car around but that's not why you buy a Forester. It's a do-everything vehicle that doesn't make many compromises to accomplish that goal. Rear seat room could be a touch bigger and that's the only major gripe I can come up with. If my Forester got totaled tomorrow, would I buy another? Yes, without a second thought. All cars should be this good.

Performance great, but 1st gear ratio too low; shift to 2nd is sometimes clumsy with best efforts. Clutch pedal range much too long. Outside styling is weird. Looks good in some lighting and some angles (e.g. rear), in others it looks pathetic. Wheels too small and stupid looking for top-of-the-line Forester. Suspension is too soft for performance. Seats and position are not comfortable for me. Seems the ergonomics are for shorter people. Gas mileage fair; seems to be the same whether driven hard or easy. Premium fuel is not a plus, but its a turbo. I've driven the '07. Much improved appearance, nicer wheels, nicer interior design / features.

This is a very good and balanced combination. It is a real AWD, a wagon, a comfortable car, and a sportive machine. Its low center of gravity allow the Forester to have a very safe driving considering the performance of the turbo. In addition this turbo makes it economical (you do not consume much fuel when you do not need much acceleration or speed, but when you need it or want it you have it).

This is my first Subaru and though I got it used and have only had it for a couple months, I know I made a good decision. The HUGE sunroof is wonderful. Comes with many safety features and this car sticks to the road like glue. I never anticipated it would be so fun to drive, with responsive handling and such a solid road feel. Interior materials look and feel well thought out and well put together - however there aren't many luxurious bells & whistles, just the necessities. If you want fancy features, this isn't the car for you. If you want fun, safety and moderate room for an active lifestyle, you're in the right place. Car is very well thought out, with an eye towards function.

The Forester is a well rounded small SUV, performing well in all disciplines. This small SUV is more fun to drive than many cars or wagons. It literally sticks to the road like glue. This is my first permanent AWD vehicle and after getting used to the different feel of driving - I really came to like it. It could use some more hp but I guess you'd have to buy the XT for that. The reliability is outstanding. Some of the interior materials and finishing seem a little cheap. The backseat is cramped even with two small children and very small compared e.g. to the Honda CRV. Dealership and service are very good.

I've had it a year now and gone 24K miles with about 7k of those on camping trips with a small pop up camper running around 1800 lbs loaded. I have a manual transmission. I have been in mountains plains and it drives like a dream, 22 mpg pulling as fast as 75 mph across Nebraska (29 to 31 mpg w/o trailer). I am on my third Subaru and the Forester is the best so far and that's saying something. Best small tow vehicle in U.S.

I have owned several Subarus and I have found the Forester to be the most fun car to drive. I was not satisfied with the "pickup" till I bought the 2004 Turbo Forester. I had loved the previous one, but needed more power in getting in and out of rush hour traffic. The turbo had that. But above all - I find the Forester to be extremely fun, something that is difficult to put into words. You have to drive one to know what I mean. Give it a try. I am interested in test driving the Baja next since I have not driven one yet. But will probably stick with the Forester. Oh yeah - you can put ANYTHING in this car - great for hauling!

I've had my XT automatic (wife doesn't know how to drive a manual) for about a month now and must say this crossover is awesome! Compared to a WRX automatic that I also drove, the XT's extra displacement means more torque and better acceleration off the line. For American driving styles this better enables one to keep up in traffic and equals more smiles/mile. The seats are very comfortable and the interior user-friendly, also headroom will not be a concern for 6'-plus drivers. The handling is one area where the WRX wagon might have the advantage, the XT has a bit too much body roll in corners (even compared to my trade-in vehicle, an '01 Pathfinder). XT= practicality & fun!

I like the performance of the Turbo XT compared to the standard model. It seems so effortless merging into traffic and if you need it, really has the get up an go. The negative is that the mileage is much worse than I expected - about 20 mpg. I also like the heaters in the mirrors, under the wipers, and in the seats. I had to have the discs turned at 33K due to brake pulsating, but that was free under warranty. I also had a fog light burn out which to my surprise was covered under warranty (bulb costs $20.00). All in all, the Forester is a great car and I love it.

I have an 2004 Forester and had to have in the shop 3 times for them to figure out I had a bad fuel injector head. It was fixed and works fine now. This morning I had to take it in again because the car overheats when the A/C is on. I did my research on Subarus and none of the data indicated that I would have the type of problems I'm having. I think I'm going to trade my car in for a Honda. My Subaru has become unreliable for my family.

It's a bit boxy, but ride is far more comfortable than Passport, drives better in snow and ice, it takes far less gas and on top of all that it's safer. It does all the things SUV does, only better, and it beats a sedan in luggage and grocery hauling too. It's an excellent vehicle. Practical, practical!

I bought this car thinking it would be as reliable and trouble free as my '95 Legacy. I was wrong! Numerous rattles, squeaks and creaks developed in the dash, console, and front passenger door. The auto transmissionwas rough and jerky shifting. The front end would grind and rattle when pulling into a parking space. Two dealers were unable to fix even a single problem. The dealer also always overfilled the engine by half a quart of oil during oil changes. Lousy service, warranty, and car. NEVER WILL BUY ONE AGAIN!

I previously owned an 02 WRX wagon but needed something a little larger and more practical due to a growing family. I still get a silly grin on my face every time I stomp on it. It's not as fast as the WRX or as nimble but much more practical. It has a silky smooth transmission and an interior that is easy on the eyes. There is not as much lag with the turbo compared to the WRX, I went with the automatic; even with the A/C blasting it goes when you you hit it. Handling is average, it's a little wobbly at high speeds but overall handles well when pushed. The 5 star crash test is a nice perk, the safest small SUV on the market gives me piece of mind.

2004 2.5X has been a good, but not great car. Great fun to drive, economical and very safe, but the engine sips coolant and there's a light, intermittent engine knock. Subaru dealers can't or won't diagnose either problem. Time will tell how long our Subaru lasts.

The Forester XT is an overall very competent good all season car. I have put over 25k on mine in little over a year. Love the power, but brakes and suspension is only adequate for the power the car has. Warped rotors already and no, I don't always get on the throttle. My wife drives most of the time. Poor gas mileage and I have tried to get manufacturer's claim for gas rating. Abrupt tranny shift from 1st and 2nd gears, jerky although not all the time. Overall I love this car.

It does a terrific job of what it is designed to do. We've had it 1 yr, for 11K mi, with no problems at all. That's what I expect for a brand new $24K car, and performance is also exactly as I would expect from a small car and small engine. It has been great in the city and on highway trips, haven't had a chance to go in the forest yet. Room for a dog and a baby, even on long trips, yet easy to drive and park anywhere. Took me a while to get used to some of the Subaru engineering, like automatic downshifting for engine braking on hills and the automatic climate control, but I've learned to accept them as useful.

This car will crunch its way up the steepest ice covered hill in town. I also love the fact that off the line you can easily smoke those larger SUV's. All of my friends are surprised at the power the Forester has after the take a spin in it. So please people get it straight the Forester XT is not a station wagon - it's a small SUV!

The Forester X is a wonderfully affordable, versatile everyday driver that is fun to drive. The gas mileage beats almost any other SUV, with the trade off being less power. If power is important, get the XT version. I took this car into foot-deep snow here without snow tires or chains and the X just plowed through it as stable and positive as you could want it. The handling is superb. What I really liked about this car was the price - for what you get, they practically give it away. With rear seats folded down, it handled 2 adults and their luggage for a vacation just fine. With a pet barrier, it takes my 70-lb. dog everywhere. In a nutshell: practical, reliable, versatile, fun, cheap.

I finally determined that with the price of gas escalating, safety being very important, and quality and reliability being essential the Subaru Forester was the vehicle that made the most sense to me. I purchased it in May of 2004 and have 6,700 miles on it. We just had over a foot of snow yesterday in MA and this SUV treats the snow as if it wasn't there. Clearly, I picked a winner.

If you want a little more kick, add an inline bilge blower for 25 bucks...take out the air box near the fender and simply add the electric bilge blower with 220 cfm and feel the power increase in the mid range...it's a kick in the pants and you'll notice the difference immediately. Improves gas mileage too/slightly. Lots of good things to say about my Forester and prior Outback. Moves well in the snow is reasonably comfortable on long trips. has ample storage for a vehicle of this size. Gas mileage is horrible. The final drive ratio is far too low. 20 MPG on freeway at 80 miles per hour. Had a Passat GLX that got 26 at same cruising speed with V-6 same basic power. Reliability has been spotless thru 53K miles. Service costs have been very reasonable. Paint is not terribly chip resistant and scratch resistant not up to expectation level. One squeek in the interior since new which is due to dash and a pillar sleeve contact. Wind noise at speed. Engine noise minor. I would buy again

The XT has plenty of room, plenty of creature comforts, including an awesome stereo! I drive 80 miles roundtrip daily to work on a two lane country road, and needed a car that could safely get around logging trucks, etc and handle the snow and ice we get during the winter. It rides well, handles well, and is very comfortable. I also like knowing that it is highly rated when it comes to safety. It's culture shock on the days I have to drive the other car! Great performance but sketchy engineering limits owner's enthusiasm. Turbo housing leakage needed 2 repairs. Door lock switch poorly positioned/ not illuminated. Radio/ heater display unreadable with sunglasses on. Automatic heat and defrost has mind of its own (nicknamed "HAL" by other owners). Roof rack has no tiedowns. Transmission whine @ 1-2 shift leaves dealer puzzled. Tires extend beyond wheelwhell, causing paint to chip off rocker panel when struck by sand put down on winter roads. (Subaru repainted vehicle and installed mudguards at no charge.)

A unique blend of car and SUV with the best characteristics of both. A very smooth ride, great handling, comfortable seats and the best front legroom by far in its class. Excellent safety features and crash test results. Base model is well equipped. Fuel economy very good for size of vehicle and AWD. A conservative but not boring vehicle

IT WILL CAUSE YOU MAJOR BACK PAIN AFTER ABOUT 1500 MILES. YOUR SPINE WILL REST ON THIS BAR AND YOU WILL BE SORRY YOU BOUGHT A $27,000 CAR WITH 27 CENT LUMBER SUPPORT.

I just bought my Turbo Forester XT and I am in love with it! I looked at an XS, but as fate would have it, the dealer had a XT. I gave it a shot and was in love from the moment I put my foot on the accelerator. I love the extra ooomph it has and it comes in handy driving on the DC Beltway. It is just the right size for me and has everything I was looking for in a small SUV. The multitude of standard features was another plus and it felt good not having to load up the vehicle with extras that should come with a car/SUV. I look forward to snow!

I'm six months and 13,000 miles into this subaru, and I can't say enough good things. It handles very well in all weather, the vehicle is well balanced, feels sturdy, has very natural interior controls, and good headlights. All the essentials are standard - ABS, cruise, power. If you want a no-nonsense vehicle, this is it. It does what it's supposed to do, nothing more, and does it well. If you're sick of features that do nothing but cost you money down the road (VOLKSWAGEN! ARG!) then this is it.

This is one well designed, carefully engineered vehicle. For those who don't need a truck or a sports car, the Forester does everything well. In bad weather, there is nothing safer or more stable under 3 tons! It tracks smoothly in slush, when big SUVs are fishtailing. Reliability is outstanding. Storage compartments are abundant. The seats are comfortable because they are shaped right. The only credible competitors are in the Outback line.

I have a manual 2.5 X bought in February. The dealer did not show me the "hill holder" feature until after I had signed all the paperwork. I didn't see any reference to it in the literature beforehand either. I HATE this feature! Other than that, the car is brilliant, and I was really excited to begin with. But everytime I have to race the engine to get it to move forward on a hill, or it sticks when I try to reverse (even not on a hill!) my enthusiasm decreases. Has anyone else had problems with this feature? I would not have bought this car if I had known it would act like this at stops. I have a complaint in to subaru now about this.

I love my subaru.

I have only two complaints about my Forester. First is that it does not have an arm rest for the driver. I know that it is an option, but my wife an I bought the upgraded package and sort of expect it to be there. Second is the look from the back. I hate to say this, but the Forester is just straight ugly from behind. However, we live in the mountains and nothing does better in the snow and ice than our Subaru. As long as the snow is not too deep it will drive circles around our 4x4 truck in the snow. Other than the two things that I mentioned we are very satisfied with our Forester.

After considerable research among VW's Passat, Volvo wagons, Saabs even Audi we settled on the 04 Forester XT with the Premium Package. The performance reviews and the numbers were so compelling that we didn't even test ride the car prior to purchase. When we drove it off the lot we were all smiles. The turbo is awesome, the moonroof expansive, the ride feels Teutonic in its quality damping and feedback, and it's just a blast to drive. Looking to get a new truck til my nephew showed up with a Forester, we read the review in Comsummer Report and took one for a ride. That was it. We couldn't find anything we didn't like. I was set on a 5 spd. but the auto with the 4 cyl was so quick and steady I was sold. Hard part was which color to get. There is plenty of room in the back to haul things and it doesn't seem to balk at a load of a few hundred pounds like some 4 cyl will. Great height for getting into and good head space and leg room in the back seat. Seats have good support. Handled great in heavy rain w/ flooded road. Love my car!!!

I just traded in my 98 Volvo S70T5A for the 04 XT PP. The XT wallows less around curves and has less lag. The XT just wants to go. The auto is well matched with the engine. It's a blast to drive and has tons of utility that my Volvo didn't have. Another plus is that the insurance is just a touch more than I was paying on my 6 year old Volvo! Go figure. Love my new 2004 XT beauty/sharp red color. Bought for a GREAT price. Got Permaplate paint protect +leather conditioner pkg. Can't get enough huge moonroof. Even when open, it's quiet. The size, perfect for my outdoor lifestyle, bigger than Rav 4 but smaller than midsize. My retriever is getting used to having jump up+ in 4 " higher. Only added is I got windows/ mnroof tinted, looks fabulous! Fun and smooth drive 210 hsepwr is plenty! Turbo euphoria! In a few moments of clarity I remember I'm breaking in the engine and slow to 60, I do get 22MPG. Optimistic when engine is broken in, MPG will improve. Can't wait to go camping in 2 weeks!

I have always driven a Ford truck or SUV (F150, F250, Explorer, Expedition). I was looking for a SAFE smaller SUV / Wagon / Hatchback that had AWD/4WD and leather or vinyl seats. The Forester was the only vehicle that earned top safety marks. It is icing on the cake that the Forester is fun to drive (I find myself looking for reasons to go for a drive). I have driven more miles in 2 months I have had the Forester than I normally drove in 6 months.

Well, the vehicle is great it feels very stable when you drive, it responds quickly, the brakes respond well, the manueverability is very good. In terms of snowy weather, you have to try to spin out or fishtail, it will spin out and/or fishtail but you really have to push it. My mother drives a Mercedes ML500 2004 and when she stepped in my car she loved the feeling of it and she felt safe in the car. I have the lowest model, but i believe the highest model is quite a car, leather interior and the dealership said the top of the line Forrester beats the Impreza WRX in the quarter mile or was it the STI (for some reason i doubt the claim).

This SUV/car drives and handles like it has a lower center of gravity than you would first expect. The 4 wheel disc brakes are a necessity. The non- turbo engine tends to lug a bit with the automatic transmission at speeds just under 40 mph, unless you manually downshift to 3rd gear, otherwise a very smooth transmission. Fuel economy is OK, but could be better. The tires are just adequate. There is good cargo space. Overall a fun vehicle to drive around town or on the highway.

This a solid easy to drive automobile. It handles well under all circumstances. I have driven it on snowy, icy, rain covered and dry roads. The dash instrumentation is accesible and easy to use. The instruction materials with the car are user friendly. The special storage areas are very useful. Seat adjustors make for a more comfortable ride. One can sit high in the car. The cargo room is larger than it looks like from outside. The all wheel drive, running lights, antilock brakes, de-icing, defogging features and side airbags help a great deal with safety. I wish they put better orginal tires on it. I replaced them immediately. No problems otherwise.

The Forester XT is a fantastically fun vehicle. It shares many components with the 300 hp WRX STI, and it shows. With the 2.5 turbo, the turbo lag is minimal- -a fantastic engine and suspension. Some components feel a bit cheap, like the seats and the doors, but they evidently are better than they feel given the crash test ratings. Up at the higher elevations in Colorado, power is still plentiful, and the auto transmission is well matched, allowing for easy kickdowns and running the engine to redline when needed. Overall, it's great fun to drive with good reliability so far--a real sleeper in station wagon guise.

Rides and handles very well, more like a good Sedan than other small SUVs. Over 15,000 miles so far. No problems at all. Comfortable seats. Good acceleration for most drivers. We prefered it's large H4 to some competitors small 6s. AWD / trans very smooth. Plenty of Cargo Room. Back Door is _not_ impeded with spare tire as is case with most direct competitors-- a plus. Mid heigth between typical SUVs and Cars makes for easy access and good view. If you are really hung up on "command view", buy something else. Gas milage slighly better than advertised near 30 mpg on the highway. LOVE the big moon roof, view, overall performance.

My wife hated it at first, but she took it yesterday morning and has been hooked ever since. Also even though its not much competition at least I can hang with my brother's STI. Even before our first oil change (1200 miles) it left us sit. It would crank but would not start. Towed to dealership which proceeded to take 2 full weeks to repair it. Just got it back today. Dealer says the problem was that there was a fault in the engine wiring harness that caused a short circuit in the electrical supply to the fuel pump. Blew a 30 amp fuse that prevented the fuel pump from working. Luckily it did not happen while driving or impact could have been much worse.

I have been a performance car enthusiast all of my life. Alas, with a second baby added to the family, it was time to move to something bigger and more "practical." I drove several "good" cars in those categories to replace my Cobra, but none which would make me really happy. Finally, I heard about the XT. WOW is all I have to say! Within one minute I knew I had found the car. This car is a total blast to drive (now that I'm over my break-in!) and I am very impressed so far with the build quality and ride. I really like my Forester. However, I never thought when buying my car that I should sit in the back. Just to see how I liked the room, etc. Well, my Forester is wonderful except for the back seat. There is no leg room whatsoever. Not even for a small child let alone an adult. My Forester does great with snow, icy conditions, etc. Handles very well on hills. I would buy another Forester again without any hesitation.

My wife and I were searching for a safe and roomy second car that had enough room to haul around two small children and the gear that goes along with it. The Forester proved more than adequate. There is plenty of room in the back for the two car seats, and the kids enjoy looking at the stars through the oversized moon roof. This is an extremely comfortable and fun car to drive. The premier leather package contains lots of extra features for a modest price. The Forester is a great family car at a reasonable price.

The handling was superb and I enjoy not having the nose dive when braking. The heated seats and entire defrosting system is outstanding in bad weather (even wiper defrosters...who would have thought?) The car is just a blast to drive and I can't wait to get into it in the morning for my commute. When I need to get in front of someone I don't even have to give it a thought..it get's done in a second. The boost of power is simply stunning. The wind noise is lower than my premium Toyota Avalon XLS at highway speeds, and the seats offer more support. All in all I am one happy camper.

Traded an '01 Outback for the '04 XT with the Premium package. The vehicle is very comfortable to drive in. The power is amazing. There is nothing I don't like about this car. It handles with precision in all elements, including ice and snow. No other SUV in this class came close to the offerings this has. I also very much like the safety rating based on crash test results. Excellent buy.

I got rid of my M-Benz S500 before coming to Minnesota. People told me Minnesota had snowy winters and that my Rear driven car wouldn't make it. asked a friend who had an AWD car. He told me to get a Subaru. This guy drove his Subaru off a Freeway ramp down a 5 story Drop. Tires exploded on impact. So I bought the XT. I can take those 35mph turns at 60mph. It only cost $18 to Fill up the gas tank compared to my M-Benz $60. Uses 5 Bottles of Oil compared to the Benz 13 Bottles. I bought the XT in January and so Far I've put in 5,650 Miles on it. I would certainly recommend this car. I would definitely buy the new Impreza STi coming out in 2006.

Still has good headroom like LR. Could be better looking. Put on 17" wheels with Michelins which improved looks and handling. Drives more like sports car.

This is the best vehicle I have ever owned. There is little turbo-lag, the gears are well matched to the engine. It's a comfortable car for something of its modest exterior dimensions and is extremely maneuverable in tight spots despite high cargo volume and practicality. Fit and finish is superior. Every car is a compromise: Subaru has attained perfection. You can buy a slightly faster sports car that is far less practical. You can buy a slightly more comfortable euro wagon that is twice as expensive. You can buy a minivan that's somewhat more practical but completely not fun to drive.

I traded my '03 X for an '04 XT. I loved the X and feel the same about the XT. The icrease in power is just what the doctor ordered. Plenty of power throughout the rev range. Hardly any turbo lag. Good tourqe for driving in the PA mountains. I never thought the fastest car I ever owner would be a wagon! (I know it's an SUV) The 5spd is a great match for the turbo motor. Great saftey features. Great "stealth" vehicle. This is truly a "do-it-all" vehicle. Gripes: The Auto Climate control does not work well. No sunroof with a 5spd, what gives? I wish the rear windows were factory tint. All of theses are minimal complaints. Overall I rate this car a 10.

As a paramedic buying a new car for my wife, safety was the #1 concern. I have seen it after an accident and the car / passenger held up quite well (even after rolling over 5-6 times off a freeway overpass at freeway speed!). With many included saftey features this car will protect you if you are involved in an accident and will also provide you with the means, through great handling, to avoid an accident. Of course it is beautiful, built like a tank, fun to drive, and it is not a dime a dozen car. This car has the safety of a Volvo with the reliability of a Honda, all for 20K. You can't go wrong.

Pulls our boats with no problem. With a luggage box on top carried all our gear, two adults, two kids and a dog across four states and back. Subaru reliability was a big decision factor, being fun to drive cinched the deal.

The responsiveness is nothing short of amazing for a sub $30k vehicle with ample seating for 4 adults. Great handling and all wheel drive versatility. Was looking for AWD to use in snow country, replacing Audi. The Forrester was head and shoulders above any other AWD/Compact SUV we researched. Exceptional value, scary acceleration, quality interior and most attractive exterior on the market. No spare on the back is a big plus. We had never considered Subaru and kinda put them in the Saab/Volvo category; quirky but functional. We've had Audi/Mustang GT/Taurus SHO/Triumph Spitfire/67 Vette, and the Forrester is more fun than them all. Only one negative - gas tank too small - or maybe I gotta quit playing street-racer. One other drawback, now I'm lusting for a WRX-STi.

Loved the 99, had 75,000 miles and never a problem. Quality and value you come to expect from Suburu. Test drove toyota rav4, honda crv, hyundai sante fe and jeep liberty, and tryed the Subura LAST. None of the competitors could stand up, and I really tryed not to buy another Suburu because I wanted to see if there was something better in that class--dont waste your time--try the Suburu Forester 1st. The Forester XT was really my second choice; I thought I wanted the WRX. Having a family, the Forester made more sense, more room, better seating and the ride wasn’t so rough. After driving both, I quickly changed my mind. It has been an absolute joy to drive. The acceleration is better than expected, it handles pretty well and the AWD provides such good stability I haven't lost traction once this winter, despite numerous attempts. A perfect blend of roomy station wagon/family car and fun to drive performance car.

We've put 600 miles on our new XT in just over a week; we can't stop driving it, even in the most recent blizzard. We have been very pleased by this ultra- sensible sports car. Dog, kids, groceries and a sub 5.7 0-60 time. What more can you ask for? We looked at many wagons (Passat, Outback, Saturn) and chose the Forester for its comfort (her) and performance (me). The sound system is great, fit and finish are excellent (on par with Acura, better than Toyota IMHO) and the car just feels rock solid. No opinion on the reliablity but with regular service it should be fine.

Having been a Mercedes M-class owner, I traded for a Subaru 2004 Forester this past August. I have nothing but positives to say about this vehicle! It is far more fun to drive than the M- class, is equally well-built, and very comfortable. The only thing that my Subaru lacks is a built-in control for programming in the garage-door opener. For the price difference, I think I can live with that small failing. I actually am looking forward to a nice snow so that I can try out my go-in-the- snow power. This is no lie-- I have to remind myself to drive my Mercedes C- class and my classic Porsche!

Subaru actually under-quoted the horsepower rating by 30hp. 3 weeks after we got it, my dad and I drove from Utah to Ohio and back, and Roo performed flawlessly. Since this vehicle is built on the Impreza chassis, it offers less room than the Legacy, but performance that is truly amazing. 0-60 times of 5.25 seconds have been documented which puts the HP number close to 250+! No complaints whatsoever except for relatively poor fuel economy. We've put on 3100 miles in one month since purchase and are averaging about 19-21MPG city/highway. Highly recommended!

Seems to have excellent handling characteristics on winding roads and feels much more stable (and powerful) than the Explorer it replaces and a heck of a lot cheaper than the Toureg I was considering. Not sure I'd want to take it off road much though but for a daily driver, it's excellent. Not nearly as quiet inside as I would prefer- seems like the higher end SUV's have a lot more sound deadening-still this is pretty minor at this price point.

I bought my Forrester on the recommendation of a family member. Big mistake. I had engine problems almost immediately. The front seats are painfully uncomfortable. The back seat is too small to adequately hold a rear- facing baby seat. In fact, just to get the seat to click in, I had to move the front seat up significantly. I traded mine in for a 2004 Honda Accord after only 7 months. Big disappointment.

I looked at the Pilot, the Murano, the Passat, the Element and even drove a 5 series BMW wagon. None of them impressed me the way the Subaru did, and the Forester was at least 8k cheaper than any of them.

Only driven 1200 miles but love everything about it. smooth, quiet, responsive, safe.Visibility best ever, moonroof biggest ever.Bought for wife for safety reasons, but she loves it for the fun of it. If it holds up mechanically, I will give it a perfect 10.

I had this car only a week now, and it has been great! I'm going from a Honda Civic to a Subaru Forester. A big change for me. A lot more space! I don't see people tailgating me as much as when I was driving my Civic (a good thing! I hate tailgaters!). The Forester rides really nice, and quiet. Steering is Ok. The acceleration will blow you away! No noticeable turbo lag. MPG is not that good, but you have to expect that for a turbo engine. Auto tranny is smooth like a caddy. Moonroof is huge! Leather is nice. Heated seats are really comfy.

Why isn't this the SUV of the year?

Living in the high mountains of the Rockies, I wanted a vehicle I could take to the hills, as well as highway, I chose the XT because of the responsiviness that this compact SUV offers. I am 6' 4" and I had a WRX, but it was too small for my size so I traded it in on this auto, and for the most part I am really happy with it, more responsive that the WRX. The only draw back is the amount of leg room on long trips, over 5 hours. The car is an automatic with adequate go power for me (a baby boomer). Although, I would like to see the XT with a STi type engine. It probably would make me seriously consider trading this sweet little car in on one.

My 2004 Forester is a replacement for a 2003 which was totaled in a terrible accident. I truely believe that had I been in another SUV I would have been killed. The vehicle was on two wheels and should have flipped over into a deep ditch. Due to the higher placement of the engine and AWD it hugged the road and was able to right itself, returning all wheels to the road. I swerved into a large tree which again, if not for the great bumper system I would have beem killed. I walked away with a burn on my elbow from pushing up against the door. I know that the 2004 will perform as well, if not better. And I love the new features.

This is a "fun" vehicle to drive. Handling is great! We changed from an Outback Limited 5-speed with all the goodies to get the additional room inside a Forester. Love Subaru's reliability and handling, and this was a good move for us to get additional interior space. The added plus was the turbo and the braking system. The Forester doesn't know it's a little car!

I never thought I'd own an SUV.....I just never liked them. I was more of a sports car fan.....I owned a GT Mustang and then a Camaro SS. But then my husband (who owned a Subaru WRX) talked me into the forester and now I love it. It doesn't have the power and performance of the SS, but its right up there and its fun to drive. And of course with the all wheel drive I know I won't have any problems with the snow and ice this winter. I also like the feeling of sitting up higher. Overall, I have to admit it took me by surprise and I really love it now :o)

This vehicle is our first Subaru and was chosen primarily for the all wheel drive feature for Minnesota snow and ice. We previously has three Volvos, but, despite it's Swedish origin, the rear wheel drive was not effective on slippery hills. We have taken three driving trips since we bought it, and have hauled all manner of stuff on these trips with complete satisfaction.

My wife and I replaced a 92 Legacy wagon with an XT w/PP. It is the ultimate automobile sweet spot. This car is the PERFECT blend of safety, performance, price, and sheer drivability. If you're looking for a small SUV/tall wagon, I must go out and test drive one to see for yourself. It blows away all competitors (CRV, RAV, Vue, Matrix) while still being economical. Be prepared to have the street cred of a bad boy racer while also enjoying the envy of soccer moms everywhere. If you and your partner must compromise on a new vehicle purchase (between performance and functionality), don't compromise, buy an XT!

At a red light, my foot slipped from the brake to the gas causing a bump with the 1987 Chevy mini-SUV in front of me. No noticed damage to the Chevy, it had some wear and tear on it. The driver was content to leave well enough alone - especiially when he saw the mess I had on my hands. Nearly $6k damage to the Subaru Forrester. It crumpled like an aluminum can under a foot. It could not leave the scene under its own power. The radiator burst. The entire front end, the hood, and much of the front parts of the engine had to be replaced. The vehicle had 400 miles on it.

This is a great vehicle. I traded in my 2002 A4 for this car. I wanted a fun AWD small SUV/wagon. I was hesitant on the eterior styling at first...Once I drove the XT, I was hooked. The turbo 2.5 liter motor is addicting. The 5 speed manual is a little sportier, but this was the compromise between my wife and I. Plus the sunroof in the Premium is to die for. You can't go wrong with this vehicle

Mostly around town driving with some light offroad...gravel and dirt roads. Very comfortable seats for long trips. I'm 6'3" and have plenty of room. A solid, responsive, well conceived vehicle. My passengers are really impressed. So far no early defects, so I'm a pretty happy camper.

This is an overall excellent vehicle. It is very roomy and practical, well designed, has been reliable so far. The engine is awesome - it responds instantaneously and never lacks power. The clutch is smooth and the transmission is very precise. Brakes have a good feel and steering is nice and responsive. The gas mileage is average - overall 21 MPG in mixed driving after over 3,000 miles. This car has the worst seatbelts I have ever seen - they are ridiculously tight, lock up constantly, and cause pain across the chest and abdomen. Had them replaced twice already, but no improvement. Will be talking directly to a Subaru rep in the near future.

Had a 2002 Subaru Outback but wasn't happy with how small it felt inside or the peppiness. Happened to mention it at my scheduled servicing and they dragged me around back of the dealership to see the just delivered 2004 Forester XT. Love at first site! The first thing I did was solar tint all the windows and I'm telling you now this car looks HOT. Love the accelleration, appearance and extra head space. The black leather seats,silver/chrome interior & chrome accent on the tailpipe is nice. The sunrooof is immense and quiet actually when opened! The 6 disk CD player, seat warmers, outdoor mirror warmers and all the extras are great.

I was looking for a cargo friendly, around town vehicle. Got not only that, but also a road trip vehicle. The Forester XT exceeded my expectations: it purrs effortlessly around town, but was a complete surprise on the open highways throughout the west. Great acceleration, tight steering, balanced road hugging at any speed. My other car is a BMW SUV, and frankly I find the Subaru more fun to drive. The difference is that the BMW is quieter, but that difference disappears when the audio system is on. My packagage includes the 7 speaker sound system - I asked my audio contractor for my home remodel to sit in the car as a reference point.

My review is based on 2500 miles. The car is without defects. This is a family wagon that doesn't penalize someone that likes to drive. I highly recommend this car based on it's engine performance, value, modest off road capability and utility. It's comfortable and quiet. There is no exhaust note, all you hear is engine sounds when driving quickly. It's road handling behavior is limited by its tires and height, but is more than adequate for normal driving. Tires do not match its speed capability when driven aggressively. Weak points: tires and fuel economy.

I only put 1,000 miles on the car so far but I am satisfied with my purchase. For a long time I debated between the Forester, the Xterra, and the Element. I found the Forester to be the best for my buck. It is not a gas guzzler like the Xterra and it is not an experimental automobile like the Element. The ride is smooth and the ergonomics are well done if you are a person of average height and weight. If you are a larger creature you might want to look for a different automobile all together.

This past June, my wife and I recently had a baby and we needed a vehicle with space, safety, and reliability being the primary features. Not wanting to relinquish my youthful sports car days I naturally suggested the WRX wagon. She had her eye on the Forester which at the time didnt have the turbo feature. I loved the WRX for being, well a WRX but we could just not compromise the space the Forester had to offer. Enter the Forester XT. This car was actually FASTER (yes faster) then the WRX and had all the space and comfort we needed to go with an all world safety pedigree. The Subaru Forester XT is the complete total package. Congrats Subaru, well done!!

xt premium does what it suppose to do...

excellent awd sedan/wagon type driving with great crash test scores. no one competes in this price/performance with easy entry ( no stepping up ) and awd. fun to drive wagon but be prepared for horrible gas mileage for its size. sun roof is HUGE, kids in 2nd row really enjoy it.

Very Happy

I got a 2004 XT after desiring a small sports car yet wanting to hold on to something I could grow into were I to start a family. I was torn between the VW GTI and the 03 XS and then I drove the XT. It is a new feeling being in a car and knowing I can go 0- 60 faster that the 350z, the S200, the Porsche Boxter, and most Ferraris yet still have a lot of safety features, interior space, and know that my car will likely spen a lot less time in the shop then the other. The leather is extremely comfortable, the AC very effective and the handling compliant. I got it for less than 2% over invoice with some excellent financing.

We bought a white, 5-speed 2004 "X" model in August. So far, it has been a great car. We took it on a 400 mi road trip over Labor Day weekend, and it was great - comfortable, fun to drive, plenty of room for our family of 3 and all our gear. We're very, very happy with our purchase. The X came with every option we would ever need or use. The only problem so far is getting the hill-holder clutch to disengage when backing out of my driveway (which is on a hill). Otherwise, it's been smooth-driving!

Fabulous motor. It could be a V8.

Right sized, decent milage for an AWD, reputation for reliability, nice stereo/features - all have been said before about this car and are true. What's new is the this turbo-motor in this car - and it RULES. Tons of torque at low rpm - smooth, quiet, effortless acceleration with no fanfare. Amazing. Press harder on the accelerater and it accelerates very quickly and smoothly ,no waiting or spooling up of the turbo - a torque curve like an electric motor. Amazing. It will eat a Z-28 0-60mph, no problem. Amazing.

HAD A 1999 FORRESTER, A GOOD SUV, BUT DID NOT HAVE A SUNROOF. THIS 2004 IS ALMOST LIKE MY 1999, BUT WITH A SUNROOF AND A LOT MORE ACCESSORIES. BOTH ARE A PLEASURE TO DRIVE AND I COULD DRIVE ALL DAY AND NOT FEEL TIRED. HANDLES GREAT IN WINDING MOUNTAIN ROADS. LOOKING FORWARD TO DIVE THIS FORRESTER IN THE SNOW AND OTHER BAD WEATHER CONDITIONS.

I am not a big fan of SUV's and wasn't interested in the Forester initially. The WRX attracted my visit to the local Subaru dealer and I ended up test driving both the WRX and the Forester XT. I was blown away with Forester's unexpected acceleration. How can a "practical car" out run a "sport car"? Subaru has created an interesting combination of speed and practicality in the Forester XT. The day after I brought the car I took it out to my favorite surfing spot. My 8 ft surf board fitted nicely with the seats folded down. I didn't even have to use the roof rack. This is truly an unique car for people wanting speed and space.

We just bought a Forester XT and could not be happier with our decision. As a young couple struggling to find a balance between the utility of extra cargo space and AWD and sporty, youth- inspiring torque and handling, our wishes came true in the Forester XT. We turn plenty of heads on the street thanks to the functional hood scoop, and plenty of heads in the parking lot as we never seem to run out of room for cargo. The most practical and affordable combination of sport and utility on the market!

Finally, the SUV for this century!

I don’t pay a lot of money for a car unless I am convinced it will be worth my investment. The newer 04’ Forester has huge improvements on the glitches of the older models, especially the ’01 model complaints in Edmund’s consumer opinions. It is the only SUV in the small class category to rank good in the overall crash tests. Nice standard features like fog lights and power locks and windows. Go for the winter upgrade package if you have a lot of winter driving.

An excellent family performance wagon with far above average for class engine performance. It has great utility and value yet is far from being a mommy car. It is true to being a small ute from ride/handling perspective. I thought it would only be a tall wagon.

Drove one back from Ballwin MO, down to Little Rock AR this weekend. WOW! Having a large moonroof makes it feel like a convertible. The 210 horse power engine, let alone the turbo, makes it feel like a sports car. All that along with the cargo capacity of a small SUV - it's got to be the best of all worlds. Plus there is an incedible amount of window glass surrounding the passenger compartment, making for great viewing for everyone in the vehicle. This vehicle is SOLID inside and out.

Bought very recently, so no comment about reliability valid at this time. Test drove both the XT turbo and non- turbo XS. Liked both actually, but shocked by the goodess and tractability of the turbo 2.5 engine. Tons of torque. No turbo wind-up. None. Motor goes about business effortlessly in day to day driving - much less frenetic than most autos, can get the job done at low rpm easily so it ends up being smooth and quiet. This car has two personalities - the very competent and comfortable daily driver being the main and most useful one. Push the accelerator past half tho'and it just flat flies. No noise or fanfare, just takes off.

My wife and I had been driving a 2000 Legacy GT until the machine I had been so anxiously waiting for finally arrived. Having had two previous turbocharged cars (Mazda 626 touring sedans), I was anxious to regain that extra kick in engine power and the extra space flexibility that the the hatchbacks provided. Well, now with the Forester XT, all that is back and much more. Not only is it rated as one the safest vehicules on the road, it has AWD, better handling, better performance, better sound system, bigger moonroof, more space, more features...and it looks great! It's a sports car, it's a SUV, it's a utility sports car, it's a dream machine!

After 5000 miles and 4 months of highway, city and off road driving not a single problem. Haven't been back to the dealer except to buy accessories! I do a lot of mountain road driving and even with a roof top cargo carrier and camping gear inside it handles great. The safety ratings on this vehicle are excellent also.

This vehicle rides great... Very quite inside... Last car was very noisey. Road noise is almost non- existent...Plenty of room in the back, seats are comfortable. I use alot of back country roads and it handles the curves and dips great... Haven't found anything I don't like yet. Everyone tells me how good the car looks. only have 2000 miles on it, but the gas milage could be better only getting about 20 in mostly highway driving...ease

I recently purchased the 03 Subaru forester. I was quoted a price of $500 below invoice. This is a great car. I only had it for two days and had to take my lawnmower in for service, no problem roll it in, bungy it down (love those cargo hooks) and away we go. Couldn't do that in my maxima. This car has nice acceleration and it is not underpowered in my opinion, although I probably will not get invited to any nascar events! This car for me is the right balance between function and car without being a truck or over sized SUV. I test drove the Mazda tribute which is an excellent vehicle as well, but Subaru really has the AWD figured out.

I think this is an AWESOME vehicle. It has great handling characteristics for a "wagon" b/c of the WRX underpinnings. The motor is, frankly, stronger than the WRX in all meaningful measures. (It's a 2.5 vs. the 2.0 for the WRX.) Subaru gets 300 HP from this basic setup in the STi, and if you want to, for $4K more you can duplicate that performance with bolt-on stuff. Very solidly built.Shifting is smooth, interior fit and finish great. Drive by wire makes a real difference.

We purchased the Forester 2.5 XS with the premium leather package three days ago. It is a joy to drive - responsive, comfortable, great audio system. The CD player holds 6 CDs, but the dashboard storage compartment holds 5 cd cases - minor inconvenience. This is a great vehicle.

Subaru really hit a bullseye with this 2003 Forester model.I have a silver 2.5x model that came packaged with the optional security alarm, armrest extender, mudguards, chrome tailpipe and hood deflector. This crossover suv is sized right and looks sharp, with very good room, comfort and performance. With its venerable boxer engine, all wheel drive and ABS standard, along with a host of other amenities, it truly is a great value for the price!
