The best way to describe the 04 Nissan Maxima is OK. The best way to describe Nissans costumer service and reliability is TERRIBLE. Nissan clearly has no value of their customers as they have had 600+ reviews on faulty transmissions and yet to recall it even though they know it is on them. My maxima is just over 121,000 miles and the transmission has gone. There is a horrible jerking feeling when breaking as if gears are getting stuck, sometimes acceleration has the same issues, making it even scarier because you have no control over the car. It is quiet terrifying and Nissan believes we deserve to pay them another $3,000+ to replace THEIR ISSUE. (if you experience similar issues I recommend reading reviews on http://www.carcomplaints.com/Nissan/Maxima/2004/transmission/jerks_when_shifting-2.shtml for help.) I've contacted Nissan several times for help and I either can not get through to them or they tell me they can not help. I've reported the issue with BBB as many others have and should continue to do. I am outraged with the issue and poor accommodations and services on behalf of Nissan. Several law suits have been filed but no outcome. If you or someone you know has this issue be sure to file your complaint to Nissan at 1-800-647-7261 to help us get answers! Pros: Original, one owner car indicates the Elite, which is discontinued, is a loaded top of the line model with 4 bucket seats. Front wheel drive oversteer is disconcerting. Car purchased in June 2003 when model went on sale. A couple of factory flaws and several recalls all satisfactorily resolved within first two years. List of accessories equal to a vehicle costing at least $20k to $30k more. Cons: Steering wheel entertainment controls wired incorrectly; remain uncorrected to date. A minor nuisance. Will buy a RWD vehicle next time.

I bought my 04 maxima in 05 with around 40k on it and it now has 170k. I love the look and power of the engine. It's style still looks great on the road. I bought the car b/c of style and reliability. The tranny went out around 50k miles(fortunately I had and extended warranty). The CD player went out twice and I always had problems with the heat going out in winter and ac in summer. I was very optimistic about the car but around 150k it just started having continuous problems. The power steering line leaked, the radiator and thermostat went bad and every sensor in the world seems to go bad annually( and it is over 200+ to fix each, 5 different ones have went out). I love the car and have had it for over 10 years but unfortunately I will not buy another one and will stick to toyota or Honda. Nissan just has too many little problems and is not very reliable.

It will definitely gain attention on the road by the exterior design but that is about all this car can do for you. Very low mileage purchase in January of 2011. The first thing I noticed about a week later was the famous shimmy. I'm doing 45-50 and the steering wheel starts shaking like a hula dancer. So of course I went back to the dealership they re balanced the tires. A week later it came back so I purchased 4 brand new Goodyear tires didn't solve it shimmy remained up until the end. March of 2011 had to have motor mounts replaced under warranty. September 2011 the timing chain was replaced under warranty thru Nissan. January 2012 the upper A/C hose was replaced for $600. July 2012 Power Steering leak was replaced. December 2012 both H.I.D headlights went out on the highway due to a bad ballast. March 2013 both CV Joints had to be replaced due to leakage. August 2013 The vehicle began to experience a hard start then that same day left me stranded at wal mart it was the Cam/crank sensors. January 2014 The Valve cover gaskets leaked oil. Fixed properly leaked again for a second time. June 2014 check engine light comes on P0420: Catalyst Efficiency Failure which means that catalytic converter was bad didn't replace. October 2014 Alternator fails. By December 2014 another check engine light this time the transmission needed to be replaced for a second time as had been by the previous owner. January 2015 traded for a 2009 Infiniti M. DO NOT BUY THIS CAR YOU ALONG WITH MY BROTHER,MYSELF,A MILLION OTHERS WILL REGRET IT.

I brought my 2004 Nissan Maxima SL at Motor City Auto Brokers in Waukegan, IL. When I first got the car I was in love with it. The gps, the put in radio with auxiliary, the pretty neon blue headlights, but after a few months my car started acting crazy. The steering wheel shakes, the brakes went bad, power steering is messed up, tires was messed up, parts of the car was broken. It was just maxed out. If you buy this car please get it checked out throughly before taking it off the lot. Keep up the maintenance. We had to take it to the shop and found out my car had many problems yet it drove like nothing was wrong. Not even a light came on. I would not even buy another car from Motor City Auto Brokers. Anyhow I'm just sad that my car is maxed out lol I am planning on upgrading to the 2010 maxima. Lord willing.

Bought my 2004 maxima with just above 100,000 miles 2 and a half years ago, have 125,000 miles on it now. It's a pretty fast car, rides comfortably at high speeds, and has really good stock speakers. But, it has had way too many problems. Power steering pump died on me, tensioners on the chain broke, both cam shaft sensors died and would cut all power to the car when moving, sunroof won't open, the climate controls won't work, including the defrosters, which isn't fun in the winter. CD player doesn't work. I feel the transmission shifting heavy now, which isn't good at all. This car has turned me off to nissan, I will probably end up getting a different vehicle in the immediate future.

I purchased this car due to how beautiful it is and powerful, got a great deal on it but now I know why it was so cheap. After a week of having this car at 111,400 miles I realized it is having minor transmission issues. Going fast and staying at a consistent shift it drives like a dream. Stop and go traffic however; a nightmare. Wasted my time and money, currently looking for a new commuter due to me going to college and working.

I bought my '04 Maxima used in 2008 with 69K miles on it. I've had nothing but trouble with it since I bought it. Transmission went out at 87k miles. The dealership's mechanic told me he has seen many Maximas come in with a bad Valve Body causing the tranny to slip and also slam into gear from park to drive. Luckily my extended warranty covered it. Here is the long list of problems I've had with the car since then: bad radiator fan assembly, ignition coil, valve cover gasket, 2 broken motor mounts, bad altenator, tie rod end, bad cat converter, rear wheel bearing, and power window motor. I traded it in last week and good riddence!!

The engine in this thing ... dayyum! It was a very fast car! It was also superbly comfortable on long drives, and did surprisingly well on gas. I bought this used for a really good price. I was disappointed however in the transmission failures and overall build quality. The car was in good shape but felt like it was 10 years older than it was.

Bought it with 19K - now have 86K. 3rd set of brakes and 4th set of tires. Now replacing the tranny & timing belt for over $5K. Before the ext warranty expired I told dealer I was having transmission issues. They said it was the motor mount which they repaired. Once out of warranty the tranny went completely. Appealed to Nissan NA - no success. Asked local service manager why I should put in another Nissan tranny and he said "Dont worry they fixed the problem" admitting there were issues with the 2004 trannys. There is a class action suit for the trans if anyone is interested. Last car payment is next month. Tears. No more car payments but a huge charge bill for repairs.

I purchased a 2004 Nissan Maxima after extensive research as a left over in January 2005. The car was garaged 95% of the time and serviced by the dealership until the warranty expired. Traveling from South Carolina to Pennsylvania, the ABS and Brake lights illuminated. Standard brakes were still operational subsequently I drove the car to the Faulkner dealership in Harrisburg. Here the mechanics determined there was a fault code indicating an entire ABS replacement. They also found rust on the floorboards under the front wheel wells. Add this to a sunroof motor failure just days prior to the ABS brakes failing. Stranded in Harrisburg I did a little research and quickly identified a TSB on Maxima brakes. Nissan owners posted on this subject frequently as well as rust under the floorboards and sunroof failure. I shared my findings with the dealership when they called to announce the nearly 5K in repairs needed for the Maxima. The Faulkner dealership then directed me to call the Nissan Corporate Customer Assistance. I explained the situation and that the car was indeed 8 years old but had merely 60K miles most of which were highway. The interview process was consistent from the dealership to the customer service representative to the final mediator. I realized I was repeating information on the car for three days. The global narrative included; • The car received regular maintenance from the Star Nissan Dealership (I would not recommend this dealership) • The Star Nissan Group sold and maintenanced the car until warranty expiration. • The Star Nissan mechanics failed to notice any of these issues even though they had the car on the rack for 10 days repairing the air conditioning just five months prior. • I personally detailed the car four to five times a year—washed the undercarriage as well. The day before Thanksgiving the corporate mediator, Glenda, called to announce Nissan would not be providing any repair assistance. Unfortunately, I was also very ill and lacked the energy to pursue the matter. It was essential to repair the brakes so I could make it home and get to a doctor. It is important to know that I loved this car. I selected every option and waited until I found a black on black fully loaded Maxima. This car was serviced more than any other vehicle I have owned. From the 261 lb/sqft torque to the responsive engine this car made me happy…..until it didn’t. As it turns out, we had a dysfunctional relationship. I gave and gave and Nissan left me sitting. If you have read this and still purchase a Nissan and especially a Maxima remember you were warned.

Worse car I've ever owned. Paint is fading, chrome is chipping off the front grill, I've only owned this car for about 12 days, and already had to replace the clutch(which din't help with fading or going to the floor), water pump, radiator, hose, and head gasket. I had the car inspected 2nd day I had it and I was told it was flawless. Performance is poor, there's no such thing like fuel economy in this car, no oil leak but still have to add oil every week, replaced two rear tires already, one of the rims bent already...Do I need to say more? Worse car I've ever owned in my life. I wish I can take Nissan to court for these faulty factory defects

I have a 2004 Nissan Maxima with the serious transmission problems, driver’s side window motor and one motor used to control the driver side power seat is out. We have been owners of Nissans for more than 22 years. At one time all of my children’s (3) has a Nissan. We will switch to another brand and never own a Maxima again. My daughter had the same problem with her 2004 Murano.

I had a 1994 Nissan Maxima for 10 years with minimum problems,then got the 2004 and it has been a headache ever since. Got it in 2004 and by 2009 the transmission went out!The front end has every problem in the book.Struts, rack and pinion,shocks,..you name it it's bad.I get new tires every 2 years,no matter what I have done it still sucks.Corporate will not help.Has to be the worst car ever!The CD player won't play unless you are sitting still,the power windows get stuck,just a horrible car. I was so excited when I bought this car I've always had a Nissan and they never let me down. I loved the double sun roof and the previous owner had "tricked" it out so it was all fancy. I bought it with 130,000 miles on it which was quite a bit but it was running well! But then after about 20,000 miles the key kept getting stuck in the ignition, the CD player skips everything and cuts out, takes a few times to actually start the car and now it has trouble switching gears AND I was driving a few days ago and it totally turned on in the middle of the road; steering wheel locked, gas didn't work, lights and everything went off (had to turn it off then back on again). Nissan has let me down.

Where do i start. i have had four generations of nissan maxima 4th 5th 6th and 7th generation maximas. So im talking from experience because i know how the car should opperate and run. But the 2004 nissan maxima SE has to be the worse car ever made by nissan. The timming belt, transmission, coils, shocks, struts, car seats all broke apart every 6 months apart. It seems like the put the car together with tape. Its just very badly designed. I never had any issues with any other car? i still have my 5th and 6th generation maximas running. Dont bother looking at the 2004 maxima. Just jump straight to the 8th generation maxima its worth it.

I am writing this to confirm other Quality Issues. 1. My transmission failed after 86,000 miles and was replaced by the dealer at a cost of $3,400. Coroporate Nissan would do nothing for me or the dealer although this was my second Maxima. I am shocked at how bad they treat loyal owners of their brand. 2. The chrome accent strips along the roof are peeling and Corporate Nissan will do nothing. 3. The dealer now wants me to replace the valve cover gasket at 95,000 miles due to it leaking at a cost of $690. The gasket cost is around $40 on line. 4. The leather steering wheel is coming apart and this is the second one, as the original was replaced for the same problem.

I purchased my Maxima about 1/2 a year ago with 89,000 miles on it and so far so good. I may do the struts soon, front a rear, but other than that manual trans is sweet, clutch is working fine, and engine wants to go go go! Glad I went with the manual after reading some reviews of the automatic trans. jerking, plus it is extra fun to drive. My only complaint is the road noise and that it burns a quart of oil every 5,000 miles. I would only by a manual Maxima, and so far happy with my purchase!

I bought this car new in white diamond pearl with heated seats, Bose 6cd changer, sunroof, etc. This car made a rattling noise since about 30,000mi. Dealer claimed they couldn't hear it as always. Rear struts gone< 30,000 mi, tires worn @ 18,000mi despite rotating every 4,000 mi w/oil change. Gas mileage sucked until I got 100,000mi.then 25mpg. The Bose speakers went out and radio/ 6cd changer failed around 24,000 mi n was replaced with a so- called new 1. At $32,000, I expected better quality.warranty out 110,000mi had 2 replace another radio aftermkt now,tune up @$750, front and rear hub n barrens over $1200. New front struts @ $500.New tires every year at $700 set.no throttle now... Saddd

Bought car at 89K miles & replaced timing chains & transmission 2 weeks after(cost=$5k)& then replaced oil cooler gasket.Burns over 1 quart of oil per 1000 miles.Car now has 145k miles and I'm replacing the left Control Arm & brakes & rotors due to the damage. Dealer said it was normal for this car to burn this much oil.It is not leaking oil.Nissan was great about honoring the 2 recalls & fixed them no problem.The steering column vibrates roughly when driving even when alignment is done & balanced tires.Bought new Michelin Primacy tires which helped some.The turning radius is horrible. Car is super comfy& roomy for long trips.Love the style & sporty but 2 expensive 2 keep buying oil.

In 2007 I began to notice that the “chrome finish” on the front grill was beginning to peel off. This was also beginning to happen on the “chrome” accents that are embedded on the roof of the vehicle. In late 2008 the power window motor located in the driver’s door began to malfunction and now it is not functional at all. In 2009, the power door locks located on the driver’s side (front and rear doors) also began to malfunction. Power to the steering wheel column and the drivers seat have now also failed. I have also experienced issues with the air conditioning system and I have had several leaks in the o-rings that have been addressed several times. Do not purchase a Nissan product!!

bought the car 3 months ago from dealership with 3 month warrenty car had no problems at all took it to a nissan machanick to check it out after driving the car for 3 months or 15000 miles the car started to experience severe jerking and transmission slipping.. the engine would not go more then 19 miles and the rpms would jump to large numbers and slip tne car starts kicking and doesnt drive i have the 2004 nissan maxima 3.5se model with 5 sp automatick transmission this car has been great until this point but 80xxx miles is reediculous for this type of money this was my 5TH AND LASTTTT MAXIMA I AM EVER BYING THESE MANUFACTURES RUINED THE GUD NAME OF NISSAN AND ARE NOT DOING ANYTHING TO REPA

Bought my max new. Added billet grille & chrome wheels. So exciting! Major oil leak. Maintained by dealer exclusively (oil changed every 5,000 miles). At 105,000 the dealer recommended 10-30wt oil to muffle tapping noise in engine. Are hood, roof & trunk made of aluminum? Material is different than metal fenders. Although car was detailed professionally, the paint has totally faded and worn through to metal on hood & roof. Rest of ext is still shiny black. Embarrassing! Gray contact paper surrounding instr cluster is bubbling. Center console cushion has fallen off twice. Moonroof doesn't close without playing w/ switch. Auto tilt wheel doesn't always lift/lower when door opens.

I purchased this car in October 2008, with 62,000. The car is very roomy, sleek, and sexy. By the way it is very fast for a V6 sedan. Everything was fine until about 85,000, and I noticed a jerking when driving after awhile. I took it into the dealer, and they said that they feel the jerking, but the warranty that I purchased didn't want to fix it right away, they recommended that I do a transmission flush, which I did. As soon as I left the lot, the jerking reoccurred, I drove it till the transmission got worst, took it back and the warranty will NOW replace the transmission. Also the air conditioner went out, motor mounts were shot also. All this under 100,000, thank goodness.

I absolutely will never, ever buy Nissan products again. The issues with this car are innumerable but I'll try and include them in order of decreasing cost to fix: New transmission (other complaints on this site) @ 70K miles, new paint job due to defective black paint that lasted only 3 years, new front struts at 65K miles, new front bearings @ 60K miles, front wheel shimmy is recurring issue since day 1, front headlamps are not clear due to sun after 4 years. The front turning radius is that of an 18-wheeler.

This is my third Nissan and I've loved them all. I bought this car new and find it totally reliable and wonderful to drive. I've had no problems with the performance or the quality of the vehicle. I've replaced nothing and my interior still looks great. The only negative thing I have to say about it is the turning radius is too wide.

After reading the bad reviews, I had to weigh in on how pleased I am with my Maxima. I'm the original owner and have 112,000 miles on it. It has been the perfect car. I've had great reliability, smooth ride, excellent gas mileage and comfortable interior. I love my heated seats, excellent sound system, roomy interior and large truck. This car has not disappointed me and I'm sure I'll be looking to Nissan for my next car!

This car is not up to par for the cost. New was well over $30,000. I have had brake problems, the CD player skips, the a/c has stopped all together, and now it is making a knocking noise. I will be getting rid of it because I do not want to sink more money in it. It is a shame that Nissan did not pay as much attention to the Maxima as the Altima. If I had it to do over again I would have saved and bought the Altima. Now I will never buy another Nissan, i don't care what they are selling.

I was very surprised by some of the negative reviews I read because this has not been my experience at all. I have never had any problems with the car itself and love driving it and riding in it. It has beautiful styling, rides very comfortably, and has great power which is so important in metropolitan areas where one must accelerate on to highways.Fuel economy on the highway can go as high as 32 mpg with correct fuel but is lower around town 21 mpg .

I bought my car brand new and have had nothing but trouble since. Sunroof opens by itself, window motor has been replaced several times, major transmission problems, replaced brakes several times, replaced axles, struts wheel barrons and calibers. This is just the beginning of my list. I hate this car, I will NEVER buy another Nissan due to this. This is the worst experience i have ever had with a car, and the dealership has never been very helpful. Told them about my transmission and their response was stuff happens. too bad it happens to most or all 2004 nissan maximas and nothing will be done about it!

We bought this car in March of 2010, with 85,000 miles; it now has 96,000, after only 5 months. So far, it has been a very reliable, roomy, and comfortable family car. We average around 24.5 mpg. On a recent 300-mile trip, I averaged 31.2 mpg with luggage and a passenger. The front seats are comfortable, but the seat backs are shaped oddly, and can become annoying. The back seat is huge, and is more comfortable than the front. It is very enjoyable to drive, with lots of power, engaging handling, and a firm yet compliant ride. It is quiet inside, with only minor road noise. The BOSE sound system sounds great, and the radio display is excellent. I would highly recommend this car to anyone.

I bought my Max privately just after the ABS sensors and actuator were replaced @ Lancaster Nissan. 14,000mi later, I needed the very same work done by the same dealer. I refuse. I have had other items go bad @ a couple $100 here and a couple $100 there. The car is beautiful but full of knocking noises. The car is uncomfortable because I sit on the seats instead of in them. I owned a 93' Altima & a 96' Max. Both were of a much better quality than this car. I owned a Buick between the two Maximas & will go back when I can get rid of this car. ok after reading some of the other reviews i am trying to figure out what did they do wrong to make there maxima give them so much trouble. I have had my maxima since it was brand new back in 04 and i have not had the 1st problem. I will live by Nissan and say that they have a great car on there hands. This is the 3rd and last Maxima I will own. The car is/was beautiful and had all the perks, leather, heated seats, sunroof, heated steering wheel, Bose. I always got compliments on what a good looking car that is was. But that was it. During the 5 years of owner ship, replaced brakes 3 times, rotors twice, 3 wheel bearings, 1 steering knuckle, AC system had a leak at factory fitting, the rear end could not be aligned and ate tires every few months, and the transmission started to go (Google it). I hear many of the same complaints from this $30k+ car. Got to the point that I did not enjoy driving it because I was worried of what would go wrong next. Now I drive a 2009 Hyundai Sonata that I love!

If you are considering this car, don't buy it. We bought new and paid down in 3yrs. Always told service at dealership about jerky movements when shifting and accelerating. Transmission began having major problems at 56K miles. Took it to Nissan shop and they suggested trans oil change. Did not wanted to hook it to scanner. They said car did not need it. Now at 62K miles it is being repaired ($2K at auto shop) and Nissan won't respond. This car can endanger the driver's and passengers life. Will never buy Nissan again.

I bought this car used from a family friend 2 years ago. It is at 76k miles and has not had any major problems. I feel like the car is mid-range in every aspect. For instance, the V6 engine is responsive but nothing like a sports coupe. It gets decent gas mileage but nothing spectacular. I like the look and design of the interior, but the materials used makes it feel a little cheap. Overall I think this car is good at a lot of things but great at nothing. It looks and feels more sporty than my Mom's Camery, but has all the same practical uses. It is a rational choice for someone looking for a functioning car with a little more flare than your average sedan.

The performance of the car is right up there is definitely fun to drive for sure. All in all I like my car if it come with all the fixing I've had to do to it.I never had problems with it until it was crashed except for a battery dieing on my first day of work. after the insurance company paid $15,000 to fix yes that amount is right. about 4 months later I started having problems with it they never should have fixed it they should have totaled it out. It broke down at a light i got it started a few times to make it to the gas station across the street before it died again. Worst auto purchase I ever made. Hate the wide turn radius, the low profile tires don't last and provide a bumpy ride. Numerous expensive repairs, most recently the transmission went out, started slipping out of gear, jerking, reving up unexpectedly. Cost to repair $4,000 and Nissan won't do anything to help because it is 6,000 miles out of warranty, although there have been numerous problems with these Maxima transmissions. This car cost over $30,000 but now is only worth $8,000 at best.Poor gas mileage also. Body dents very easily. Bose stereo doesn't stay tuned.

This car is a total disappointment. The timing chain went of the car after 26,000 miles. The care burns a ton of oil and the moon roof leaks. The motor is noisy and the problems just keep piling up. I also had the rear deck rattle and drove the service dept crazy until they fixed it. I finally got a real good service mechanic to put some extra foam under the deck to it would not rattle. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER NISSAN PERIOD. THIS CAR STINKS

I owned a 1995 maxima and love it. still runable. bought 2004 and clunk noise when put in reverse to drive gear, brought to nissan dealer and diagnose front engine mount is broken (i have no car accidents)replaced it for $600, clunk noise did not go away. Brought back to nissan dealer and suggest me to replace the transmission due to "internal failure" cost me another $4000 to replace a new transmission. Reported and complained to Nissan Cooperate and waiting to hear from them. I think I got a defect transmission part and it can be a wear and tear on front mount engine when my car is only 84K on millage... very disappointed on Nissan, my whole family and husband voted out on Nissan.

I can't believe after owning this car for two yrs i have so much problems. It first started with the engine mount having to be changed, then came the jerk when going from reverse to drive, then the a/c stopped working had to change the expansion valve. I read a lot of the previous reviews and I think the main issue here is maintenance of a sporty vehicle. I usually get 28 MPG in town and 30-40 MPG on the open road (averaging over 80 MPH). Other than regular maintenance and fixing the suspension parts that my kids have bent over the years, I haven't had any problems. I do replace tires nearly every year because I have the suspension set tight, nearly race ready (remember this is the same suspension the Mercedes Compressor has). I am an aggressive driver that loves to drive at high speeds on the open road. I have had the recalls done and my grill is still great. I am finally putting spark plugs and a K&N filter in it after nearly 90k miles.

I have had nothing but trouble with this car. I will never buy a Nissan again. The turn radius is similar to a huge truck. I kept getting flat tires because the chrome kept peeling from the wheels and the tires would not bond to the wheel and hold in the air. The transmissions are faulty. I have seen many reviews from others with the same transmission problem. I am sure Nissan knows about the bad transmissions. They told me when it was in warranty that it was broken motor mounts. I would not expect to have 2 broken motor mounts unless I hit something. A few hundred miles later and out of warranty transmission goes south. The interior buttons are cheap plastic and they crack and break lose.

Bought this car after owning an Acura and a Camry. Both the Acura and Camry which are now 15 years old have had less problems than this Maxima. Had to have transmission replaced after warranty ran out. AC compressor had to be replaced. Motor went out on the driver seat and it will not move- not worth the expense ($250) to replace it. There is a constant rattle in the back panel. Nissan has not helped one bit with any of this or with the poor service and the run around I got at a particular Nissan dealership. Lastly the interior design with the radio, temp control, etc. is terrible and difficult to use while driving with all those buttons. I will never buy another Nissan. Get a Camry!

This is a great car inside and out. Comfortable and exciting to drive. Only objections are the poor turning radius and the occasional tendency of the car to "get away" from you when accelerating under certain conditions, two flaws I knew about before purchasing, but which did not deter me because Maximas are so reliable. Also, original set of tires went 60K miles before needing replacement. I owned 1989, 1994 and 2004 models and liked them all. Had zero mechanical problems. Drove the 1994 for 10 yrs, 105K miles and sold it for $5K. I do a lot of highway driving and this car is fantastic for long trips.

This car was a dream in the beginning, It had great acceleration, high text gadgets that all worked, heated seats and Xeon head lights and a wonderful sound system. I brought this car with 30k miles back in 2007. Now in 2009 I have replaced 3 wheel bearing, A Bose sub woofer, (by the way the Head unit isn't a BOSE unit), a drivers power window and a very costly transmission. My advice is to stay away from this model. It looks great, but the cost of up keep will disappoint you. For a car that was once over 30K isn’t built better than a car you can buy for 10K. Go with a higher quality car, maybe the Infiniti. Nissan's flagship is a joke. My 1996 Honda Accord was a way better investment!!!!

I purchased a 04 max, from the beginning i've had problems. The headliner had to be replaced because the fabric was peeling. The brakes have been awful, had to replace the sun roof, not the oval shaped one. The mileage is currently 71,000 miles and my transmission is completely shot. The car would jerk in the gears, especially when I'm reversing then shifting to drive. The dealer says there are metal shavings inside the transmission and it needs to be replaced. This is gonna cost me $4900, parts and labor. I owe 2 more months payment on the car. When I finally own it, I cant drive it. Was gonna buy an Armada, but now I will never buy another Nissan again. Very disappointed.

I bought this car brand new and I loved it for the first 2 years. Then.. The main problems I have are the grill peels, I have replaced the brakes and pads several times and it still shimmys at high speeds, and I have oil leak. I have changed the oil every 2000 miles and I treat it like my baby. Unfortunately the CD player stopped working and the CD is stuck. The sun roof won't open and last but not least the car is very difficult to turn without going back and forth a few times. The heating system is terrible. It is near impossible to get it to defrost if it is humid out. This car has always been in the garage too.

I purchased my 04 Maxima brand new and had high expectations. The first 3 years were relatively fine .... only minor inconveniences with recalls (sky view roof, heated seats) and minor mechanical issues. During the fourth and fifth years I had nothing but trouble ... motor mounts, transmission, computer errors, sensor trouble. It finally got to the point that the vehicle was unsafe for me to drive my children in ... I was afraid that it would sputter and stall with them in the vehicle as it ahd done to me alone on 2 prior occasions. Finally dumped it at the MBZ dealer and purchased an 08 C350

Whats next? It started with fuel leaks on the fuel rail. Two in fact. Then wheel bearings. Then brake rotors warping continually. Next came the A/C leaks. Now the A/C compressor is making a noise. Got it in 08, three days later new transmission, thank god it was under warranty. Slowly other parts started wearing out, motor mounts, inner tire rods and ac compressor have to be replaced according to the dealer all this comes up to 3k. I never again will buy another Nissan, I've had Honda's all my life. Stick with acura if you want upscale quality that won't dissapoint you. I'm waiting a little longer before I jump into a tl.. Oh yeah turning radius is terrible! A semi does a better u turn!

This 04 nissan maxima 3.5 SE is a stick and is quick for a 4door sedan but unfortunately the car has been a big disappointment. The car has had a least two recalls and the rear panel always rattled. I finally got nissan to put in additional padding to get the rattling to stop. The oil has to be changed often or the engine will run very noisy. The sun roof leaks and now after 28000 miles the timing chain has to be changed which is costing me around 2k I'm done with nissan never again JAC

I bought this car used with about 36K miles on it. I previously had a 2002 Maxima GLE which I like but wanted the newer body style. I noticed fairly shortly after I purchased this one that the car shifted hard between 1st/2nd and 2nd/3rd gears and much harder during downshifting (automatic trans). I also thought that my older Maxima was better made. This one just looks cheaper inside.

I have a 6 speed and I am in LOVE with it. Very powerful but I still stall sometimes cuz the engine is so quiet. Not a bad thing. Has every option imaginable, including a heated steering wheel (very nice). Love the style of the car, black on black with tinted windows and 20" black rims. Only problem with the car is that it hit 80k and I'm burning a quart and a half of oil per 1,000 miles. That's 50% more than acceptable. That is huge for a luxury sedan from Nissan. Have heard the same complaints from others at 80k and no one wants to do anything about it. Besides the oil, I love everything else about it. Not bad on gas either, 6th gear is beautiful on highway.

I bought the car brand new in 2004. Now have 75K miles. Still drives like new and still having fun driving it. Great Bose sound system (not sure why it has a tape player, never used it). Does not drive well in Wisconsin weather. Low pro tire needs replacement every 40K and pricey. Replaced by front grill b/c of peeling (common issue). Nissan great about fixing recalls. Overall pretty satisfied.

I bought my 2004 Maxima 3.5 SL brand new and I maintain it religiously. I owned a 1997 and that was one of the best cars I ever owned. This is probably the worst car I ever owned. Two recalls, the transmission went 100 miles before the warranty expired. Front grille replaced 3 times because of peeling. Brake problems. Had all the documentation and got zero satisfaction from Nissan. Latest - ABS problem, rear bearings, etc. All expensive repairs. Wrote a letter to the President of Nissan - no response. I will never ever ever buy another Nissan product.

Saw this car while on vacation in Florida and fell in love with it. It's a very competent road car, with powerful acceleration and a roomy cabin. Styling (other than grille) is top notch. Had to replace front shocks under warranty and now there is a vibration in steering wheel. I hope can be remedied with tire balancing, but have read many complaints in the past about wheel/tire issues related to this. Overall, have been very happy with car and it's the best one I've ever owned.

I've read some reviews, and see the same problems I have. Minor things such as peeling grilles, easily scratched interior plastic & routine balancing the tires I can live with. My Max started to burn oil at 60K. Now before you all say I abused the car, I'm a grown 50 year old male that drives normally, changes oil every 4K etc. Of course when I brought the car in at 60K for the oil burning I'm told, "sorry out of warranty". Fine, just remember Nissan, a happy customer tells his friends about a great car. A scorned customer tells the world!

Well I have to say my experience has been very good with my Max. I have only had 2 recalls (both done at the same time) and no other issues. I'm up in age so I'm not incline to put this car through its paces, but I have had to step on it hard sometimes to avoid other drivers. The car really accelerates. It is way more safe than my last vehicle in this manner. I have confidence to pull out in traffic and know I can pull away from approaching cars.

I recently purchased the SL edition and I have to say I love it! Fun to drive, alot of pep (fast), so many interior options but most of all comfort. Great handling and good on gas. Not your typical sedan that's for sure. I also own a 1998 Maxima that has a ton of miles but, runs like the day I bought it. I definetly recommend Maximas they always have more to offer then comparable sedans and are the most reliable of any other car I have owned including Honda.

I purchased this vehicle used, after trading in my Acura RL (mistake!). With this car you feel every bump. My passenger side door has become so hard to close, that you get a work out every time you close it. My ABS sensor went bad which cost me big $$$ before they found out what was causing my brakes to make such an awful noise. When I first got it the power steering came and went whenever. I see why the younger crowd like the car, it is fast and sexy, but us older guys like luxury with our speed. I am trading it for a BMW the first chance I get.

Bought brand new 2004 was a great car until it needed tires rotated from that point on we had a shimmy in the front end. Steering wheel vibration very bad on highway at 50+. Dealer changed struts, we changed tires with good year, then GY took back and made allowance on new tires still had vibration. No matter what it had to have tires balanced every 1000, 1500 miles to not vibrate. Also breaks make noise all the time even after have them changed at dealer. Turning radius is awful, don't try to park the car without backing up and pulling in again every time. Love the car, hate the problems, traded for a Toyota Avalon 2008

First I'll confirm the complaints others had: 3 peeling grilles replaced under warranty before I gave up, turning radius make this care a bear to park, plastic trim pieces in interior are easily scratched. The final blow for me: I'm burning 1 qt oil/750 miles. I do frequent oil changes and have never abused the car. I noticed the problem at around 65K and now have 80K. Dealer says, "sorry out of warranty".

After a few months of owning the car, the coils went out (cost $800). Six months later same thing plus wiring harness (cost $2,800). A few weeks later same exact thing, only they replaced the computer in the car (under warranty). A few weeks later, the same thing, and now another computer and coil pack. The computer fried everything over and over again. My car has had the computer replaced 4 times. The last time I went back to the dealership, I had them look at the history, and the original owner had the same problem. The car has been repaired at the Nissan dealer every time. I have spent numerous hours on the phone with Nissan Corporate, with no help what so ever. DO NOT BUY THIS CAR

Less than 65000 miles already have had one transmission replaced, two stock tires blow out, back interior shelf replaced, all 4 warped rotors replaced, front grill replaced, timing chain replaced, Air conditioning system needs to be replaced but not willing to pay 1300 dollars to do it. I am now replacing my 2nd transmission due to a defect acknowledged my nissan but not covered because out of 12000 mile part and 60000 mile powertrain warranty. I do not recommend this vehicle to anyone. This is my 2nd and last nissan vehicle I will ever purchase. Nissan consumer afairs and customer support group have yet to be helpful in this matter.

What I like most about this car is its power and performance. 260 hp, this thing flies. It has performance tires for a reason. Do not like the interior, it looks cheapish Japanese style, like a cheap electronic calculator. The leather is nice, most of the trim great, but the gauges could seriously have benefited from a different designer. Gas consumption is NOT good, you'll notice pretty fast you're paying at the pump a lot. But overall, it's a nice sporty sedan.

Great car. Wasn't afraid at all to buy a 2004 with 112,000 one-owner miles. I plan to take it to 200,000+ in the next 5 years (mostly highway driving). Worse case scenario, I may spend $1,200 on an engine/tranny/or front end work in the next 5 years. That makes for some cheap driving. Don't be afraid of miles people - you can get a hell of a deal on a late model car with some miles so I'm more than happy that I can spend money for repairs if needed. So far, the car has been beyond excellent!

Now they are saying that the transmission is going out and needs to be replaced.

14,000 miles - Sun windows leaked causing rust and paint to bubble. 21,000 miles - Significant shimmy in steering wheel at speeds above 45mph. Deal stated nothing was wrong. Tires needed replacement. Non-affiliated repair shop identified cause of shimmy and tire wear as being out of round wheel hubs. This is a very common problem with this year / model. Hubs were replaced and problem was corrected. 47,000 miles - ABS system failure. The causes are the bolts on the hub and wheel assemble rust. This allows the mounting plate to move causing the sensor to short out. This causes the control unit to burn out. The repair is $3,000.00 This is a very common problem on this year/make.

I bought this car two months ago. I love the ext. styling. It looks so great. The SL model has everything and is comparable to Infiniti feature-wise. The one thing I really hate is the turning radius. I could make tighter turns in a bus. U-turns in one try just won't happen unless you're on a four lane road. That's very disappointing that a car with so many great features comes up short in this one area. I dread even trying to make tight turns and sometimes wondered if I had been aware of it when I test drove it, if I still would have purchased it. From looking at 2006 and maybe even 2007 Maximas, Nissan still hasn't corrected what would make this car an absolute 10 in my opinion!

Having bought this car as a demo with 5000 miles on it I attributed many of its brake, strut, rotor problems to being abused by the dealer. After reading many of these reviews now I realize they are design issues. Despite its flaws (see suggested improvements), overall I am happy with the car. I get about 430 miles per tank for the type of driving I do which is a hybrid of mostly highway/city driving. The car has plenty of room for 4 adults. Acceleration is excellent, just be prepared for the torque steering when you punch it. Car pulls when stopping and steering wheel shimmies on highway. Replaced horrible goodyear tires with Michelin Pilot MXM4 and have been 100% happy with them.

Well, I bought my Maxima used and I loved the way it handled the road. Fuel economy is great. It has great power when I need it. I have come to some problems with the car though. I have had the transmission fixed on it with just 41,000 miles on it. And it hasn't run the same. Had the BOSE radio replace because CD didn't work. I'm scared there will be other problems ahead. Turn radius is terrible. I had a 2000 Maxima and the turn radius was great in that one. Road noise is bad but, thinking it's the standard OE tires that are bad. Other than that it is a fun car to drive.

I am only 25 so this was the first car I ever purchased. Since about 3 months into owning the vehicle I have had a squeak in my left front end and popping in my right front end on turning and acceleration. While I do love the style and looks of the car I have a feeling down the line I am going to have some expensive repair bills due to poor quality in the build of the vehicle. I was told after my warranty expired they are starting to find problems in the front end, I asked Nissan Corp. for help and was told my car is out of warranty there was nothing they could do.

The Maxima is well designed, fun to drive and overall it performs well. It has some giddyap, looks great and gets good mileage. The biggest problem is the turning radius. It's a complete joke. I can't believe that Nissan engineers could not have corrected this problem. You'll find tractor trailers that have a better turning radius. Also, beware if you get the vehicle in black - the low to the ground Maxima attracts road gravel, stones, etc., that mar up the front grill finish - very noticeable. The dealer quoted me $800 to repaint. Get the bra. Also, the location of the charger outlet is in an awkward position and the cheap plastic cover breaks easily.

This is the 4th Nissan I have owned and you can bet it WILL BE MY LAST! I bought it because I thought it would be fun and sporty, while still luxurious and comfortable. However, none of that is any good if you're too worried about breaking down to drive it! I have put 30k miles on this car and have had nothing but problems with it the entire time. In 2yrs, it's been in the shop for the Clutch (twice!), Transmission, Struts, power windows, gas tank, front axle, engine mount, and the stereo. I was just informed that the Bose stereo unit on this car has failed and Nissan refuses to fix it. Only 2 yrs old and the radio fails? Not only that, to replace it will cost me just under $1000. Disappointed!

This car is not your boring family car.Plenty of room for everyone and fun to drive. The power is unbelievable. Get compliments on the looks all the time. We have had it for a year and no mechanical problems. No steering or suspension problems as in other reviews.The eagle rsa are cracking on the sidewall with 34,000 mi.Only downsides are torque steer and turning radius.

I have had 4 Maximas and when I saw the 04 I had to have it and I bought this car the first week it came out. Since then I have had nothing but trouble. I've had a new computer, 6 new injectors and now this week the dealership stated I need a new cat. converter. The tires have been replaced 2x's due to wearing out at 40,000 miles. This car has been in the shop more than any car I have ever owned. The front grill has also been replace due to peeling paint.The list goes on and on. I don't know if I will ever buy another Nissan.

The suspension is horrible. The front shock has been replaced as has the front strut, yet you still feel every crack in the road. The radio has to be turned up the noise level is so high. The drivers side power window has been repaired twice and it still goes up very slow. My avg. gas mileage runs around 18-20 mpg. I have to reset the clock every 4-6 weeks because it runs fast. The display screen that shows the radio station and time etc. had to be removed because it was cloudy and hampered viewing the settings. The lights do not adequately light the road, they seem to be misaligned, but I am told they are not. I keep checking to see if my lights are on and I have 20/20 vision.

I have owned my max for the past 2-1/2 yrs and I love it. If I had to complain about anything it would be the turning radius of the car is maneuverable but a little hard. I am not crazy about the orange dash board illumination because it seems harder to see in the daylight. Otherwise, i LOVE my Max!

Driving the car here in Colorado is flat out fun. The car has performance to spare even at altitude above 10,000 feet and it runs great on regular gas. I have had fuel mileage approaching 30 mph on interstate driving. I do use Mobil 1 which in my case does help fuel economy a bit. Only downside has been a faulty oxygen sensor which was replaced by the dealer but with the suggestion that I stick with Nissan's air filter instead of a high performance air filter.

The 2004 max is equipped with a very strong motor and at time is a very fun car to drive however the interior lack the comforter or style. The exterior was the most disappointing the overall workmenship that was in the past a high quality of nissan somehow change not for the good.

I have owned my Max for 2 years. On June 27 2006 my car was broken into. Doors were locked,windows were up,and alarm was working. When I came outside to my car the 2 front windows were down and the door lock was messed up. Apparently, someone used an object, such as a screw driver, jammed it in the driver's side door turned it to make the windows come down and doors to unlock which is why the alarm never went off. This happen right in front of my house around 5:00 am no noise was made. Fortunately, the only thing they stole was a cell phone adapter. I am nervous about how easy it is to get into this car and searching for a car that does not have this feature. The repair bill was $794

Having bought a luxury car for the Mrs., I wanted something sporty. For me the Maxima SE was the one, since my '90 Max, with well over 200K mi., was ready to be upgraded. Found an '04 with 12K miles on it and scooped it up. I would have loved to have had the Z, but with 2 children, I went for the next best thing. Two words: Close Enough!! It has plenty of room, lots of gadgets, which I like, an extremely powerful engine, a tranny you can't even feel shift, and the BOSE system is sweet. It rides nice and smooth for a car sitting on 18s, and takes corners like nobody's business. I love the distinct body style, from the aggressive front end to the mean pipes in back. This is one nice ride!!

I hate the cost of the low profile tires. The "look" is not so much better, that it is worth the cost! I have owned 3 Maximas; I may not purchase another one for this reason only. $350 a tire is Ridiculous for only 20,000 mile of wear. This is a rip-off for consumers.

I love my Maxima. I have had no problems with the breaks. The interior is great. The exterior is great. I have recently test driven some smaller cars and found that the Maxima has spoiled me. The Bose sound system is great and the Maxia hold its value. The tires are expensive and never in stock. That is the only complaint I have.

1. This is an excellent performance car, but I did not take enough time test driving to realize the ride with the low profile tires was going to be too hard. 2. I just spent $400 with the dealership to have the brake rotors turned to eliminate serve brake chatter at high speeds. With 30,000 miles and my prior experience, this is an unacceptable reliability issue. No coverage on the brakes even with the extended warranty. Bummer and the last Nissan I buy!

The Nissan Maxima has always been a "dream car" of mine. Now that I finally own one, I am a bit disappointed. To its credit, the car is beautiful inside and out and a blast to drive. Unfortunately, all my visits to the service department have soured my overall experience. In two years, I have had two recalls. One for a wire in the seat (minor), and another for a corroding rear sub- frame. The latter is a major repair. The battery has also corroded on me and I have had 2 front-driver-side struts go out in less than a year's time. There seems to be a lot of corroding going on for a car less than two years old. Yes, its still under warranty, but I feel my troubles are just beginning.

I always liked the Maxima and when the new design came out in 2004 - I had to have it. This was my first "brand new car". I enjoyed it for a while but problems developed early on. I had both front struts replaced at 10K miles. Two headlights (requires removing the front fender). Front brakes at 22k miles - I had to pay but I feel that should have been covered by the dealer. The glass roof has been replaced three times, a brake sensor was replaced, two tires and one rim (pot hole). I feel I have gotten to know the service department much more than I would ever want to.

The only problem I have had with my Maxima is the sunroof. They can't seem to get it fixed. It won't close properly or even open sometimes. Everything within it from the motor to a new switch panel. Also both of the front struts had to be replaced within a few months of each other. I just think that was the actual manufacturer of the struts themselves not Nissan. I have some serious concerns over the sunroof since I have over 33,000 miles on the car an very little warranty left.

my maxima is great i got the blue with black leather and navigation. The car drives good has little pull (torque steer) when you step on it. Watch out for the paint on these cars they scatch without touch. Turning with this car lets you know its not a small car.

This is my second Maxima, my last one a 2000 which I loved 10 out of 10. The 2004 Maxima although an extremely cool looking car has been a major let down. So far the exhaust heat shield has come loose three times, front strut snapped, electronic chip needed to be reset, navigation sometimes won't boot, cannot replace a simple light bulb without surgery, major torque steer, interior paneling keeps seperating, seat heat buttons cave into the console with almost no pressure, and the list goes on. The 2000 Maxima was a quality build. Nissan went cheap on quality in 2004. I cannot wait to get rid of this car. Maybe I'll buy an Acura TL with more features for the same amount of money.

my driving experience has been pleaserable in this car. it has plenty of room for five adults and the engine sounds great.owning the car has been less of a fun factor, the brakes are less than perfect on the car it can benefit from better performance brakes as an option on the car.

I saw this car while driving past the dealer and stopped in to take a look. I loved the car from the 1st day and ended up buying the SE model. The car had many great features but it rode much too hard for my wife and me. After about 3 months and much discusion I was able to get a fair price from the dealer for a trade to the SL. WOW what a great car. It is very comfortable and handles like a dream. I have a problem keeping down to the speed limit on the highways, it just wants to sail along. There are many great features on this vehicle but the automatic entry and exit is one I truly appreciate. I have had all the routine service performed by Nissan, they have been excellent.

Overall, love the car. Fun to drive and has all the bells and whistles. The only problem with the car has been in the steering wheel. It has had a tremor since Day One. The first diagnosis was "elliptical" tires caused by being tied down too tightly during transport. After many phone calls, the tires were replaced. That, however, didn't really solve the problem. The wheel continues to vibrate and shimmy. It has been in the shop several times but nothing has stopped the shaking. This has been frustrating.

I LOVE MY CAR! if only the steering wheel would stop shaking when i hit the brakes at 50-80 MPH. I got a call from my dealership today saying that it is my tires, you know....the ones that are $300.00 each. It has been in the shop about 6-7 times since i bought it with no resolution to the problems. They diagnosed it as my rotors previously now it's my tires....we'll see. Other then that the car is a dream to drive, you get where you want to go REAL quick!

This is a great car. The performance is outstanding and the interior is very good, especially considering that I am 6' 6" tall. The only problem that I have had is with the soft rims and low profile tires, all original equipment. I have damaged 3 rims so far.

Usually I do not give review unless I like the vehicle 100%. The 6th generation maxima is best in the industry. I purchased the vehicle in Aug, 2004 since then I put on around 18500 miles. No major problems. Only problem I had initially was with balancing. That was resolved with in 2 months after I purchased. Since then till today, I have no other issues. I always use premium fuel and getting consistent 25 miles per gal. Till today my car looks beautiful as new. Excellent performance and very comfortable. Before I used maxima, I used Toyota and Honda vehicles. They never come closer to the 6th generation maxima. I love my maxima. Thanks to Nissan

I just purchased a 2004 Nissan Maxima. I am pretty upset because of the poor flimsy body. The car is not solid, and the quality of material is so cheap. The car thus is reliable but lacks the German craftsmanship in every aspect; especially in the suspension, interior quality, and the solidness. It seems that Nissan attempted to make this car out of aluminum like metal all the way around.

I purchased my 2004 SL in May of 2003 and have had problems ever since! Started with (1)swishing noise inside cabin = after 3 trips to dealer they finally replaced radiator, (2)steering wheel shaking = did many rotations, alignments, then all new brake job overhaul, (3)scrubbing noise up to 20 mph-biggest problem since Feb. 2005 = after 11 trips to 3 dif. dealers and dealing w/Nissan America (which is a joke), replaced rotors, wheel bearings, backing plate, yet the PROBLEM STILL EXISTS!, and finally (4) struts/mounts = just repaired. This was my 1st Nissan and I will never buy another. I'm cleaning it up now and plan to sell it THIS WEEKEND!

The worst turn radius ever imaginable, it turns like a bus. After hearing about its safety, I see why it's equipped with so many air bags. Reports say that it has the worst safety rating in it's class. My car was hit by a shopping cart in a parking lot and sustained unbelievable damage. A SHOPPING CART!! It's a comfortable, beautiful car. I can't get over the fact that it dents so easily, which is backed up by the safety rating, In an accident you are probably totalled out. For this reason after only 9000 miles, I'm looking for another car. And the deal I received at Victory Nissan is a whole different story. Avoid them at all costs. BUYER BEWARE.I should have listened to others.

If this is Nissan's flagship vehicle, I hate to see the quality of the rest of the line! Rattles in front, rattles in rear, deck lid had to be repainted,radio does'nt pick stations very good, chrome coming off of all 4 wheels. I took car back to fix the problems, I was told no problem found with the rattles??, radio problem is SOP. I was told the wheels would have to ordered, finally got them two and a half months later. After the wheels were replaced, car now has a shimmy they can't fix!! I would not reccomend this car to anyone!!!

I purchased this 2004 maxima in dec/04 with 14k miles on it. Since i've owned it i have had it in the shop 6-7 times! As with other reviews, an anoying shimmy in the steering wheel at 60-70mph. Dealer has balanced tires several times, resurfaced the front brake rotors, still there, tired of messing with it!! Clunking in front end over slow speeds and sharp bumps, front struts were replaced after 3 attempts to fix. (I had to suggest it!) Rust around skyview roof after it was replaced 2x. Once for safety recall, second for leaking badly when rains. Rust developing under front of hood lip.( Under the paint!) Numerous trim items replaced because of poor quality!! Too many problems for 2004 car!!

This review will change your mind about the Maxima. My mother & I both have the exact same '04 SE & we both have had the exact same problems. Bad shaking in the steering wheel at higher speeds, warped rotors that re-warp after being cut (more shaking), cupped tires & alignment problems. Both cars now have 15 & 18K mi, respectively, and it's unbelievable how similar our problems are. Many alignments, balanced tires, replaced rotors, cupped tires & the problems just come right back. Dealer has not been helpful, thinks we are crazy. My cupped tires, warped rotors & wheel vibration started at 3K miles & remain today after many "fixes," I am fed up & ready to trade in! No other issues!
