2004 CLK55 AMG Convertible, Fun!

This is luxury and fun car all in one. Its too bad a car this wonderful to drive should be so expensive when new because it really brings out the immature "man" side of me when I drive. LoL! All that means is that having the power of an AMG and a Convertible top to put down and explore the open road is awesome. One of the most notable things is... most people drive with their windows closed and don't experience the wind, the smells and the ambient noises around you while you drive. This car, or any convertible brings those senses back to life. And I know from my own "fears" thought owning this vehicle... an AMG Mercedes meant lots of maintenance expenses and wasted time at the dealer for service. But it has been anything but that! This car can be your everyday driver or your Sunday fun car! You Choose! It has neither been a maintenance problem or any other waste of time. Just a pure pleasure of power, luxury and the quality Mercedes Benz ride.

I did a 48 state search for this car (found it 4 hours from my home!) I have always done almost all the work on my cars since I was 16. I have only bought 3 new cars in the 57 years I have been driving. My motto has always been "I never met a car I didn't need to modify for me". That means modify in all ways. The only mods on this car I have/will make involve adding things that did not come on it originally (such as bluetooth). It has the right wheels (AMG) so it is the first car ever that I don't have to change the wheels! It has the right engine - more than enough power/acceleration/speed (and economy considering the performance) (my last "hot rod" was a 1987 Volvo wagon with a Mustang Cobra 5.0 with a Tremec 5-speed - like Paul Newman and David Letterman had!). This car is effortless, smooth and secure. The HVAC is great and so is the Command radio/nav unit. It has the right suspension - it rides nice, handles the twisties great and stops like a race car. It does have some options I don't need but I can handle that since I figure I didn't pay for them. And it looks awesome with the top down (and the top is so easy to lower/raise) - and it seats 4.. Based on how new the interior looks (I am very fussy) the materials are tough as well as good looking and luxurious (but I know that from my previous 2 MB's). So far it is easy to work on (better than my 300CE was) and maintain.

I LOVE THIS CAR!!

I was very concerned on the maintenance cost for this car but it's really not as bad as you think if you are mentally prepared to expect slightly higher costs. I did have a transmission issue that kept the car jumping into default mode (3rd gear). I hear it is a common issue.. a $900 dollar issue. Other than that (FYI the dealership treated me very well) I brought the car as a weekend car. The power and looks make it practically impossible to NOT drive it daily. It pulls so smoothly from the light that it is not until you look in the mirror or down at the dash that you notice you are moving so quickly. Only car i have driven just for fun like riding my motorcycle.

I bought the car with 6k miles on it. I am still amazed with car after 5 years, the way it obeys driver's command. Body style is great. Only changes made to this car are 20inch giovanni rims which makes it look even greater.I heard complain about having one cup holder only. There are actually two cup holders. I own four different vehicles and believe if you keep up with the maintanance and make small changes technology wise to your car, it will give you years of enjoyment, specialy to clk500

Fast great handling, SEXY car. I love it and would recommend to anyone as a head turner. Gas mileage is as expected, not your everyday driver. 4 sets of brake pads set me back 400 dollars at the dealer. No way to keep the factory look and add satellite radio unless it was already installed. Changing the head unit is not an option unless a custom bracket is fabricated. Verify the one you buy has the wiring to attach the bluetooth adapter for your hands free calling by taking it to the dealer. Adding it later is very expensive.

I always loved the CLK models, especially with AMG bodywork, upgrades and notable performance is something that I have always marveled. I really liked the 208 body, but the newer 209 just gives me chills. These cars are the complete package for me, weighted more towards luxury than sport. I opted for the 320 (over 500) because I would lose my license, be in jail and ultimately would not be practical for me, as I cannot take advantage of the modest 3.2 liter engine in my current daily driving conditions. I have had a few minor repairs during the warranty period. And I have noticed though, each time I (or the dealer) do any maintenance, the car drives notable different, improved & better.

Bought it new in 03, and have it as a second car. A few minor problems like flicker in tail light, sunroof one touch and stuck on ABS light on dash since then but nothing big. One thing that is VERY annoying is the complicated "computer" that's accessed through a series of pressing four buttons in certain sequence on the steering wheel. You can never find what you want easily and you can have an accident while you are fiddling with it while driving!! Setting the clock?? You need a degree in engineering to do it. Having an older BMW the controls were very simple one touch on one single button.

Love the look and the concept. Hate the hassle. Have clk 500 with all the options and 26k miles. So far communications computer failed, blinker lights on panel failed, brakes squeak, fan sounds like jet engine, paint on hood and other places is blistering, stalk for cell phone broken, seat seam is coming lose. Car is nightmare and this is not unusual from what I read. When you lay this on top of "normal" maintenance you are into serious dollars.

Pre-owned with 7k miles, over a year now and I still try to find any excuse to be out driving it. Acceleration is amazing, 5 years old and still a head-Turner. Few minor things went wrong but all were covered under the warranty. I drove many Mercedes, BMW's and prosches, and I can tell you this one combines the power of a Porsche with the luxury of a Benz.

Purchased the CLK55 as a Certified Pre-Owned with 18K miles already on it. Timeless looks make everyone mistake this for a new car. It has gotten nothing but praise from my friends, neighbors and co-workers when they see it. The lack of pillars between front and rear windows allows for amazing visibility. Turning off the ESP allows for a little fun and lets you turn out the rear if you so desire. Driving this car is pure enjoyment. Rear seat is tight but can fit an reasonable size adult. For half the price of a new CLK I'm completely happy with my purchase. Averaging about 18mpg but can get 20 if I take it easy. If you're buying this car you shouldn't be worrying about price of gas.

Seems the Germans hit this one out of the park. Top opens easily, style to spare, a real head-turner. Mine is triple black & I love it. Sounds like a real super-car and performs like one as well. I've had other sports cars but this one is my favorite for several reasons listed and some not willing to admit to here. Can't wait for the CLK63 as soon as my lease is up. Among the earliest CLK 500 Cabrios shipped. Superb styling and remarkable acceleration with pedal to floor. Also drive a '67 427 stick Vette so I speak with some authority. Minor problems with driver's seat belt "presentor". Early navigation system difficult to use, improved later in year but dash/wood/knob styling looks much better than improved GPS version. What's more important? I'm a style geek. Gas mileage seems poor to some because take is small! Get 23-25 on highway, 17-18 city driving. Top operation slick. Hard to understand why anyone could not love this car. Still get many great comments into 5th year. Wish it ran on regular gas! More power not essential with this car.

I've owned my 2004 CLK cabriolet since new and use it for trips and top down driving. It's not my daily driver. I like the pickup in sport mode, the ride free of cowl shake and the looks with the top down. Luggage space is sparse unless the top is up. The optional AMG seating with more thigh and back support, heating and cooling and more controls is a must for tall drivers. Overall, I am very satisfied and have had zero defects or recalls.

Waited 5 months for car to be delivered. Within 3 months of delivery we had a leak in the transmission that left the car inoperable. After two visits, they replaced the trans. Next the Zenon headlight started shorting out; it had to be replaced. Next was alignment issues, this car will wear out top quality tires in less than 12k miles of normal driving! My car has had to be aligned 3 times in 2 years. Next was the seatbelt, the mechanism that hands you the belt had to be replaced. And finally, today my wife is at the dealership having a gear replaced in the tilt steering mechanism. I am so disappointed in this car! I thought I was buying the best, but, I got a lemon! Buyer beware.

A beautiful car inside and out, but too many malfunctions. The tires only get 10- 12,000 miles. Automatic transmission failed after 30,000. The front upper console light panel blew after 1500 miles. Passenger window motor and headrest motor have needed to be replaced. Moonroof cables needed to be replaced after 25,000. Good mpg (24-26), and very comfortable and quiet.

The CLK500 cabrio is a fantastic car. No compromises with this car--it doesn't even really need four doors because you can drop to top with the keyfob so backseat passengers can comfortably enter standing up. I use it to get my kids and their carseats in more easily than seating them in our SUV. Performance is fantastic. 0-60 in under 6. I've done 135 in it and there's litterally no difference in handling between that and 65. Braking is astonishingly short. Great car for family guys who want a sports car or tall people--drivers up to 6'7". One warning though: The real mileage you'll get in this car is about 16.5 mpg.

I leased a 2001 that had nothing but problems. They assured me that it was extremely rare. Sucker! I leased a 2004 on condition that if I had problems they would let me out of the lease. Sucker! Even worse than the first one, and guess what, they won't even return my phone calls about getting out of the lease. The car spent so much time in the shop getting the same things fixed that I don't bother any more. Seats don't work, windshield makes cracking sounds, gas tank doesn't fill properly, cruise control analog/digital readings don't match, brakes squeal, and much more. Never get this car! My wife's BMW has never had a day of trouble. When I finally ditch this lemon I'm going BMW.

Great car-would like better use of wind screen. Instlation, storage, and design could be better. I find the computer system for information can be difficult to use such as oil level, time change etc. Of course it would nice if the trunk could be larger even at the expence of the back seat being a little smaller(hard to get my golf clubs in & out of the trunk. Also somewhere to place a second coffee cup. Having said all that, I love the car and would recommened it to anyone. P.S. I got my brother to buy one in 2006.

This is a fantastic car to own. Sleek fast and a sheer pleasure to drive. Do not get the ventilated seats, makes them ride like hell. I didn't think I could pay $60 grand for a car and think it was worth the money. But I cannot wait to get another. Mercedes far excedes the customer service of the big 3. I leased mine for less than my Dad leases a 300c.

After a test drive on the 2004 Coupe, I was done for. It is just too exciting to drive. I had to have it. I've only had one other car that got the blood pumping like this - a BMW 540i. But this car is pure power and fits the driver like a glove. THe 302HP engine purrs like a lion and then springs to life. The cockpit is well designed, with most controls in easy reach. The computer can be programmed in all the expected luxury ways. Seems like MBZ did a great job on this.

This 2 door pillarless hardtop is a gorgeous example of an ultra modern luxury sports car that provides the open air look and fun of the bygone era of 2 door hardtops. This car turns heads for second looks, especially when all four windows are down. Performance and handling are outstanding, yet refined, so that you know you are driving a Mercedes at all times. I have owned several high performance cars including 2 BMW's. The CLK500 is, without a doubt, the best car I have ever driven - and I loved the Bimmers. It looks beautiful (I get compliments from strangers all the time), and it drives even better. The engine's performance is thrilling and the handling is superb. It is absolutely a thrill to drive. A friend of mine traded his brand new E500 for a CLK500 after riding in mine! Its also much more practical than the SL series or the SLK, because it has a functional back seat (I have two young teens to haul around), although not very good for long trips.

I have owned this car for all of 1 month now. I read the reviews and everyone has an opinion. For the most part good, a few not so good perhaps. I have been a BMW driver for over a decade and this is my first Mercedes Benz. While I am used to a younger, sportier appeal in cars, the CLK 320 has changed my whole view of MB and the definition of fun, safe, sporty and elegant. If you have reservations about this car at all, I'm here to put your mind at ease. You will not be disappointed. You will probably drive this car for a long long time. My CLK is <6 months old and has been in the shop more than every car I have ever owned over 20 years combined and I haven't even had an oil change yet! The glove box wouldn't close before I even drove my new car off the lot requiring multiple days to fix with a complete dashboard overhaul. Then the driver door had a rattle that required a "bolt to be tightened". A month later the rattle occurred on the passenger side. Then the seat belt arm extension stopped working - all requiring days of service. I gave my thoughts to JD Power & Associates and asked if others had these types of problems - the answer an emphatic yes!

Not up to BMW standards of drivability and certainly not your BORING Japanesse softness, so a great compromise between performance and luxury. This has been a treat. I did the European delivery program and the trip was amazing. I feel bad that we have speed limits in America. This car was phenomenal on the autobahn. AT 130mph, I put it on cruise control and I could take any curve easily. The stability on it was amazing and I loved racing with BMWs and blowing the hell out of them. I did pay the price as I had to gas every day for over $100 each time but it was worth it.

My first CLK was in and out of the workshop, and now in my 3rd week of ownership of my 2004 CLK320, I have to make it into the dealership b/c my lighting cluster (which houses my sunroof operation) is completely out. I can't close my sunroof! I think now (although I'm a huge M- B fan) I've lost complete faith in the company. This will most definitely be my last mercedes.

Looked at this car because ticked off at BMW service over petty problem...now glad of it! Still, nothing quite handles like BMW, CLK comes close and is much, much more functional. PLUS< DEALER WILLING TO NEGOTIATE unlike BMW who always seem to have take it or leave it attitude, even with current owners(used to be 2 in our case)

A beauty to look at. Fuel economy is good / Los Angeles to San Jose on 1 tank of gas in 105 degree heat. Bose system sounds great. Note: Don't get the keyless go as you'll burn your fingers on a hot summer day. Peeves: No in dash CD player (can't even recognize CD-RW for that matter) Road noise on concrete freeway overpasses

I purchased a 2004 CLK500 at Barrier in Bellevue, Wash., in June 2004. I have owned and driven several German automobiles in the past and this blows them all away. The styling draws attention wherever I go, and the performance and ride are incredible. This is by far the best car I have ever had.

I got this car in May, 03 when my leased was ended with BMW 3 series. The CLK is powerful and hot looking. However, the quality is no comparison with BMW. The car engine is noisy, lack of cup holder, electronic problems like my navigation will suddenly go blank, the cd changer can't detact my cd and etc, AC is not cold, the stereo is not as good as i expect from BOSE ( Harmon kardon in BMW is better ). I am just wondering what Chrysler has done on this car and didn't expect paying over 58k would get this kind of car. After a year driving this car, i am swtiching back to BMW.

I immediately had problems (sunroof rattle, rattle/creaking from the dash, poor a/c, squeeking brakes, etc.). The dealership couldn't "duplicate" the problems and denied they existed. My car was in the shop approx 20+ days in nine months. I called the dealership, it's owner (AutoNation) and Mbz Customer Relations. After approx 50 calls (no exaggeration), I finally got Mbz to buy it back under the Calif. Lemon Law. They kept putting me off hoping I would go away. The only reason I got them to buy it back is because I didn't give up - certainly not because anyone cared about doing the right thing. I will never buy a Mercedes again.

I have never had a single problem. I was a bit disappointed by the slower acceleration (no outrunning cops in this thing!), but the interior is luxurious and beautiful, and features like GPS, voice-command, and three seperate buttons for 24/7 services (mechanical support, emergency, and personal assistant--which is there to get concert tickets/make reservations/recommend hotels & restaurants) are sweet. It's a pleasure to drive, handling is nibble and acceleration is actually quite good for 215 horses. (I used to drive a BMW 540i with 284 horses) I've had no problems at all so far (watch, I just jinxed my self). I love the ease and quick operation of the soft top. Also very comfortable backseats for my 4 year old! If you're thinking of buying, I don't think you'll be disappointed!!

Order a 320 if you are concerned about gas mileage! Feels like a coupe inside with very nice roof liner; very quiet for a ragtop. A bit pricey, but will hold its value due to demand. We had the same model in 2001. There have been imporvements to the "cowl shake" in the front end. The cup holder is ridiculous. It is high on the dash and out of the way to reach. There is only one cupholder. The 2001 had two cupholders in the center console (for use by both front and rear passengers. The Command Navigation System is primitive compared to the DVD based systems of Toyota and Lexus. It is difficult to operate and poor technology as well as not being accurate.

I traded in my CLK320 for the CLK500 and what a differecne in speed, torque, and handling. The CLK500 is built solid and runs like a dream. As for the comment by another review about an oil dipstick, why? use the computer to check your oil, that's what Mercedes is all about. Nothing beats this car in build, reliability, and interior qualtiy. The Bose system is awesome thanks to the new digital wiring and sound.

LOVE IT

At first, I was skeptical to go back into a coupe. My two previous vehicles were SUVs. The body style is what first caught my attention. I also like that you do not see the CLK everywhere you go. After the test drive, the only question was cabriolet or coupe. The CLK drives so well and handles even better. I would like to have better gas mileage, but the safety features far outweigh an extra 5 mpg. I may never need the airbags or SOS, but just knowing they are there gives me peace of mind. This is a fun car to own and drive.

Took delivery of CLK 500 Cabriolet this month. So far have had no problems with the car. I ordered it in september and it has been worth the wait. Keyless go is great. The seats are very comfortable but wish I had had the foresight to order ventilated sport seats.

My previous car was a BMW 325 conv.

but I don't miss it. The CLK convertible is better (but the 325 cheaper ;-). I actually like the fact that it comes with casssette as standard, so I can connect my ipod (which wasn't possible in the 325). If there is anything I don't like, then it is the trunk, apparently there is no way of closing it without touching the car on the outside ... Next time I would pay for the "elecronic trunk closer" option (490$)

Picked up this car one Monday evening after an 8 month wait. I'm delighted I waited for it. Besides being beautiful it drives and handles great. After picking car up left the following morning for a one thousand mile trip. Can't get over how quiet this convertible is. Almost as quiet as my Lexus LS was. Rides like a much larger car. Most of the controls are very user friendly. Going thru the mountains the car hugged the road and took the turns like a sports car. May be the best car I ever owned and I've owned a bunch of them.

I have had the car a week and if initial impresssions are lasting then I made the right decision in purchasing the most expensive car I have ever purchased. However, I figure with its higher than average residual value that I should recoup something more at the end. The car is a delight to drive - it gets stares wherever I go (with many oohs and ahs) - people tell me how beautiful it is and the color combination is perfect: pewter with ash interior w/Black top. I don't like to write long reviews - I will simply state it was worth the money (paid exactly MSRP) and the wait (six months).

The Mervedes 2003 CLK 320 is the best buy in the sporty coupe offerings. With sunroof open and windows down it has the feel of a convertible, without all of the exposure or hassel of the convertible. Smooth characterizes the entire experience.

i have driven jaguars for 20 years. the reason was always the interior and the exterior distictive exterior lines. the new clk cabriolet, has it all and more. great accleration, power, smooth ride and quiet. the mocha blk exterior w/tan connelly interior leather made this a very unique car. i had never consider mercedes before because of their stark interior. this car changes everything. to me it is worth much more than i paid. no post buyer remorse for this unique auto.

Purrs like a pussycat until you put the pedal-to-the-metal, then it takes off like a bat-out-of- h#**....handles like a snake, no rattles or shimmies or shakes, just glued to the road. Mine is Black/Black/Black. Able to easily blow- away any Z corvette, BMW or muscle car from the line or rolling. Cannot wait until I can add aftermarket chip and Kompressor....will then have 525hp...

This is an awesome car. Slightly smaller than the E500 but much more nimble ... Power is abundant and the handling is crisp and smooth at the same time. Front seating is great for the taller driver ... I'm 6ft 4in and it fits perfectly. Rear passenger room is comfortable as well (a bit tight behind a tall driver) ... Haven't seen many new CLK's on the road ... especially the CLK 500's which is why people stare ... Love the way when both windows are down, it creates a very open feeling in the car (almost like a convertible) ... Build quality is much better than the E, C, ML classes (even the material is better like in the CL and S classes).

Clk-320 is a great car, fun to drive. A little snug and low, but so are most sports cars. Don't like cup holder. Have blown two tires in 5 months, how?/why? Very smooth ride, quick. Excellent audio. Can't stand air system, too loud when on high, which is all the time in the summer if you want to be cool. Mercedes telecom system stinks compared w/ GMC OnStar. Cheep tire jack. No satellite radio. Love the car, but a tad disappointed.

Picked up the 2004 Designo model CLK 500 Cabriolet. Best vehicle I've had the pleasure of driving. Smooth ride, amazing acceleration power (clocked it at 0 to 80 (not 60) in 7.2 seconds. having traded up from the audi A4, I have been absolutely thrilled with my CLK 320. I love the style, love the way it feels when i get into it and hear the solid thud of the door closing, and the performance has been a pleasure. I've also loved the extras: the way the seats push up to let someone climb easily into the back, the trip computer, the rear mirrors automatically dimming, the automatic sensor in the windshield wipers... to name a few! Drawbacks so far? (just under 10,000 miles)The analog clock loses time, and the rear windows stopped working. My first check-up at 10,000 miles will keep them busy, but I wouldn't trade this car for anything.

The CLK500 is really in a class of its own. It more luxurious and comfortable that the 3 series and it is not seen at every corner or around every block. It doesn't punish the driver over rough road yet it is able to still provide an adrenaline rush when you push down on the accelerator firmly. Also insofar as styling I believe it looks authoritative without looking overly designed or gimmicky. The seats are very comfortable, the climate control is easy to operate and the sound system is really rather pleasant sounding. The low tone exhaust system reminds you in an non-intrusive way that a muscular V8 is awaiting your need for speed.

My new MB is a beauty both inside and out but the balky shifting of the auto trans has spoiled my enjoyment. This is especially true going up and down hills. It's like it just doesn't want to shift. There is no such thing as coasting down hill to improve mileage as it just slows down unless you give it some gas. The mileage is another issue (11 City and 20 Highway).
