A quick review of my 2004 Ford Explorer . Purchased used in 2011 . Comfortable ride . Once it hit 120,000 that's were things started to go down hill. Ball joints , power steering pump. Wheel bearings. Head lights . Turn signals. And most recently , a transmission. Dropped around 7 grand total in repairs to keep on road , the last 18 months. Gas mileage is down right crappy . My advise would be not to buy one of these ford exploder.......

Had more issues than I should have had my mileage is now 115,000. 4 wheel repaired twice, rear wheel bearing replaced and not an easy fix due to their design and cost $600. hinges on lift gate glass broke, lift gate plastic cover piece cracked (it covers 25% of the lift gate), controls in the steering wheel quit working, some of the interior controls no longer illuminate, in cold weather the left side of the sound system does not function, the front piece of the passenger side step rail broke off in the winter (it's made of cheap plastic), the engine belt tensioner bearing went bad, the backup sensor quit working, and the 12 volt power socket broke and shorted out. Far too many issues.

bought my wifes explorer in 2006, with 9400 miles. at about 20,000 miles the tranny started hitching, we ignored it until got so bad we couldnt drive it.had the tranny rebuilt for 2,500 bucks. come find out there were a lot of 03,04 with the same problem. ford should have had a recall on these, if your looking at these yrs make sure u ask about the trannys! other hen that my wife loves her explorer, we live in maine and it it does great in snow

We bought our Explorer new, having owned both generations prior. This is by-far our favorite, and still sits in our driveway next to our 2007 Explorer today. We use ours for a daily driver and could not ask for a better vehicle given our needs. We have driven the majority of the time trouble free, but once we hit around the 110,000 - 125,000 mile marker, we started running into some issues, which is normal repairs that come with age. And despite the infamous transmission and tailgate cracking, we have encountered neither - but are aware that the problems exist. I would definitely purchase another one without hesitation. It's definitely a vehicle you will enjoy and want to keep.

Bought the truck in June of 2008 with 40K. Things I have absolutely had to replace:Rear axle bearing seal ($40), thermostate for radiator with seal (20), both front wheel bearings (250 a piece). Things that were wants not needs:Throttle body (700), cruise control cutoff switch (50), 4 motorcraft shocks and 8 ball joints total, front upper and lower and rear lower, front sway arm bushings (bushings wore out around 50K, buy moog bushings, Ford material is for the bushings is poor) ($600-700 for suspension parts) AC vent door components (300). AC was blowing cold air but the doors were stripped and the air was being blocked because they were not opening properly. This happened around 50K.

This car was lousy!!! Horrible experience, went thru so much with this. Well at 124,000 exactly the engine blew, so it was totled. the exale blew as well at 117,000 so this was a big problem this suv. made such loud noises no idea why, fuel was horrible...only thing it was comfortable. I have a ford mustang at 131,000 which is a 2002 with absoutly no problems whats so ever. I bought this suv at 57,000 and lasted till 124,000. NEVER AGAIN!

Purchased the car in 2005 with 30k on it. The truck operated fine until I hit 125,000 miles. at 125, the transmission went out and I had to put a new one in. at 135k, the timing belt went out. I guess the way they designed the belts, they have to pull the engine out of the truck to replace them, so we're talking approx 3,000 to replace the belt. The tow truck guy and the mecanic both said that whoever designed these was an idiot. lovely.

Loved it at first, but disappointed with the poor quality

When I first got this vehicle, I really liked it. After 8 years and 85,000 miles, I am ready to move on. Too many small problems like the visors that keep breaking, the cracked plastic on the back hatch, and a couple expensive repairs that should not have been necessary. I take good care of my vehicles and do all the maintenance. It's just some poor build quality starting to show through. Almost every 2004 Explorer has had these same problems and Ford will not acknowledge them nor address them. It's too bad because other than these annoyances it really is a nice vehicle.

This is my first Ford and I will never again purchase another. My problems are small but trying to find parts is a pain and there's not an easy fix. The visors, the seat, the crack in the back are all common complaints for this make and model and Ford refuses to acknowledge these defects or offer an expensive fix. Each part I need starts out at $100 and goes up. If I can ever find some cheap replacement parts I'm going to fix them and trade this vehicle in for a Chevy.

Aside from the throttle body being replaced the day after I bought my vehicle (Bought Used @ 31,000 miles) has been a great vehicle. Replaced brakes and tires around 67,000 miles now reaching 100,000 miles and the only thing that has happened is the replacement of the Temperature module (Leaking Radiator fluid). Doing a lot of city driving so I'm maxing about 14MPG, but get 21 - 21.5 on long trips. (Austin to Dallas) I can't fault my explorer in anyway. Paid it off in 2011 two full years early. Kudos to me. :-)

Since my 1st review 1 yr and 8 mos ago, it has cost over $4500 to maintain this SUV. Don't get me wrong - it's still very functional & great to drive. It's never left me stranded. But only 15k miles more (67k) of soft driving turned it into a money pit. Best ($$$) Goodyear Fortera TripleTred tires only lasted 29k, lots of brake work, rear bearings (fronts went at 50k), and last & certainly not least, just got a rebuilt tranny. I've owned 12 Fords since 1984, not one a lemon, but this comes the closest. Don't buy one of the '02-'06 models unless you have $$$ to spend on repairs.

I purchased this vehicle w/40,000 mil. on it. Had to return to dealer within 1 month with transmission problems. The transmission has had problems ever since. All the dash lights keep coming on from abs, airbag, 4wd to engine light. Rear end problems as well as bearings. I loved my first explorer which was a 95 and I never replaced a thing, drove it to 200,000 mil and it still ran. This vehicle is a lemon, I hate it. Can't wait to replace it. Side mirrors don't work, back up alarm doesn't work, tranny slips, noisy and has been to the garage 2 times for quitting and not re-starting. I know many people with the same problems as mine. I feel the ford quality has really slipped!

We bought this car new and noticed around 80,000 miles things started to go wrong shortly thereafter. 2003 & 2004's are notorious for the ball joints going bad fast. We spent $700 on the front end and then around 109K the back differential going bad. Many Ford forums will tell you that after 80K miles your going to have a lot of expenses as things will begin to go bad in these cars FAST. I personally experienced this as ours started to go downhill very quickly. Traded it in for a Toyota 4Runner - a car that will go well past 100K miles and keep on tickin'.

I've had my Explorer for about half a year now and am impressed. It has 122,000 miles on it, the engine doesn't leak, no wear on seats/plastic pieces, and still goes straight down the road. Like with any vehicle if it is taken care of from new, you will not have many problems. Mine is like new after 122,000 miles!

I purchased my 2004 Explorer Limited V8 new and have had it back at the dealer more often for repairs than any vehicle I have ever owned. It needed a new rear differential at 32,000 miles, a new transmission at 58,000 miles, and now another new rear differential at 68,000 miles. 68k miles in 7 years isn't exactly hard driving and I haven't ever towed anything. Ford covered the first rear rebuild but the other repair payments came from my ever shrinking wallet. The dealer's service guys are like "oh, yea, those things break all the time". Well, they shouldn't. When will Ford honor its commitment to its customers - "At Ford Quality is Job 1" was their slogan, wasn't it?

The upper part of the tailgate cracked by itself. It cost $350 to get it replaced. The service guy said this happened quite often. Hope Ford will improve body build quality. Please don't change the exterior look. Everybody loves the outside look, but each complains about the gas mileage and minor body problems. I'd like to buy a new Explorer but am waiting for good news about the body build quality and better gas mileage. Is Ford considering a hybrid version?

By now some of the interior plasic parts are giving out like sun visors or driver seat parts, important stuff. Drive train noises like either bearings or rear end oil. After all it does have 165,000 miles and these things are expected, however ive had Nissan and Toyota whan I was thinner and small vehicles don't work but they lasted forever, its just good for BASIC transportation. Rough ride and cheap.

I bought my Explorer brand new. ANd in the beginning, I loved it. Had problems with the transmission acting out, but everytime I took in to dealership, they could never find anything wrong. Drivers seat belt gets stuck once in awhile...have to keep ejecting over and over till it finally frees. The tires wear out very quickly. The brakes wear out quickly...had to have done more times than should have. And of course the heater....the blower wnet out, the wiring melted...Ford did not care at all, said it is not a safety issue. Well to me it was, because in the winter months and working nights..having no heat to defrost the windshield to see out of was a hazard. That cost me $500. to have fixed.

We have had overall good luck with our Explorer. The major problem is that many plastic parts have failed which require costly fixes. Both plastic anchors on the right and left sun visors broke which resulted in the complete replacement of the visors. The plastic lift ring on the floor cover broke which required a whole new cover. The most annoying piece of plastic that has broken twice ($350) has been the plastic panel just below the rear window. I have noted that many Explorers are driving with this piece broken. Ford has a "policy" not to replace them which leads me to believe that Ford is not living up to its reputation as customer friendly.

I bought this car with 40,000 miles on it and with service records. 6 months later the Transmission was shot and I spent $2,300 having that rebuilt. 18 months after that the Transmission is starting to slip and the service engine light is on. All I want to do is trade in this hunk of junk for something that isn't going to make me worried that I am going to have to drop $2,000 every year or so on repairs.

I have done every maintenance that is recommended to this car and I do believe that it will last a lot longer. My parents have a 2005 explorer with almost 200,000 miles on it and only had problem with window motor. I would grade this car a A-.

I can not believe that my explorer would be more reliable than my 2003 Toyota corolla. i bought this car from a friend and it had 360,000 miles. i got a tug for it only for 1 year because i thought it wouldn't last more than 1 year. The car still runs perfect and the handling in this car is amazing for an SUV. to keep this car perfect like this all you need is to do maintenance on time. i cant believe it didn't break down on me for the way i push this car. i just took it from Fairfax Virginia to Jacksonville North carolina 6 hours drive with 360k miles and its still FINE!! you see alot of Honda and Toyota in US but guess what do you see the most in Europe ? This is my third Explorer and my last. My 2000 has been the best of the 3 2000 03 &04, All 3 had the transmission rebuild, but only the 2000 has had nothing else repaired. Everything works as well as new over 205,000 miles on it now. The engines have never been a problem until now. We now have electical and rear end noise now. The 2000 pulled trailers boats and what you could get on the bumper with no effort. I wish they would bring back sun visor recorder. Also the 2nd sun visor. But I am looking at Highlanders now. 3600 for a new transmission had me looking for a different manufacturer. P.S. we did change trasmission fuild every fluid at 30,000 at the dealer no less.

I have gone thru 3 rear ends, 2 water pumps, 4 sets of tires because of there state of the art anti-slip crap eats tires right of the thing. Rear windsheild wiper caught on fire yes smoke and flames because it over heated called Ford they don't care! Needs another rear end, and now a cam! I have nothing nice to say about Ford anymore! My whole family owned Ford vehicals and the last one is out the door, whats even funnier is my father the Ford man just bought an 86 Dodge pickup runs better then any of the Fords he has ever owned! Week #1 I had to return vehicle to dealer because the tranny slipped. Over the course of 4 years (till the warranty expired) it was back 8 times due to tranny probs. It was not until I got the States Attorney's office involved did Ford repair it. Since then I've had to have a rear differential/axle seal replaced, the left rear wheel bearing is shot and now I cannot drive it because the harmonic balancer imploded! Ford say that they cannot sell a replacement because there is a National shortage....approx 5,000 suv's need the part and non are avail (manufacter went belly up). I found one in a junk yard! Oh yea, the cruise control was a recalled and replaced. Still doesn't operate.

This is the second Ford Explorer that we have owned. I'm not sure that there will be a third. Our 2004 explorer has had the timing chains replaced, the paint is coming off in sheets from the top, the heater would not work until we had work completed on it, now we just replaced the valve lifters. What's next???? We are heart sick. Does Ford not back their vehicles any better than that. My husband and I planned to wait until later to buy a new vehicle. It probably will not be a Ford. Too bad, I have always like the style of the Explorer.

One year in, and still enjoying it.

I had a 1995 Explorer when I was in high school and it had been awhile since I'd had an SUV so when we had the great gas crisis of 2008 I thought I could get into another one cheaply. I purchased this vehicle as a work vehicle. It had minor problems until I hit 35,000 miles. It took Ford 3 tries to get a working rear end which lasted only another 30,000 miles. A number of idiot lights went bad, and now paint is peeling off the roof and the rear end is again making noise. This was my first and last Big 3 auto purchase.

Our experience with Ford and this Ford Explorer has made us decide not to purchase any more Ford vehicles. This vehicle has had problems with warning lights showing up when there is no problem (started happening the very first month!), after 4 years the paint on the roof peeled off in sheets down to the bare metal and then rusted. Ford would have nothing to do with it (talked to Customer Service, the Ford body shop and dealership in SC). They wanted just under $1000 to repaint it even though it is obviously a flaw in the manufacturing and I have seen other reports on the internet. Also, now after 4.5 years, the gear shift indicator showing if you are in Park, Reverse, Drive doesn't work.

needed a SUV for the family loved it for the 1st 3 years, then the transmission, the rear lift gate, the CD player, the brakes, the back seat all went to hell. Ford wont recall and repairs are to expensive. Have always been a Ford guy, no more, going with toyota or Nissan, maybe a GMC. Would not recommend this vehicle to anyone, the transmission is not reliable at all. Although the interior is comfortable and easy to use, mechanically its not worth it

Ford needs to step to the plate and repair manufactures defective differientials. I do not beleive that in this day and age this part of the drive train should ever wear out esspecially when the humming atarted at about 50,000 miles. I also beleive that Ford knows of the problem and was aware that the rear ends where flawed at assembly and installed them anyway. A goodwill recall is the right thing to do. I will drive it till it dies and buy elsewhere if Ford does not mend my rear end. :-)

This car has always run rough - particularly the engine. Transmission had to be replaced when the car was less than a year old. The engine always had a loud whine on the highway and I had intermittent problems with the ABS light coming on and the 4x4 high light flashing. Turns out, this is all related and the entire rear differential needs to be replaced! A google search reveals that I am not alone. However, I am alone when it comes to paying the bill to fix this problem, apparently. I'd never buy this car again. Right now at 79,900 miles, but the whine has been going on for years. I just thought it was a loud truck.

Could this be correct? This no where near came up to this on any sites I looked at? Anybody validate this original price for me on an 2004 Explorer?

My Dad recommended it because of the rebates/incentives/Z-plan discount. I was sold on the 3rd-row seat and very smooth ride. 52k miles later, I haven't been disappointed - it's been great for hauling kids/equipment to sports events, camping trips, and my short commute to work on our rough winter roads. Its interesting to read the other reviews - how can you complain about fuel economy (I get 15-16 MPG) when you run a heavy SUV with a relatively powerful 4.0 V6? I have no qualms about the tranny (though it whines in extreme cold at certain RPMs), even if it 'clunks' into reverse occasionally. I agree that the rear hatch trim is lousy. For what I paid, its been a pretty good value.

Bought this Explorer in '05 for the third row seats and 4-wheel drive in Michigan. The v-8 is an exceptionally smooth powerplant that has not given us any trouble. The traction control system is nice for the icy roads, and I feel very good that my wife and kids use this vehicle as their daily driver with all of the airbags, the 4wd, traction control and overall heft of the vehicle. We also tow a 22' boat with it and it makes an excellent tow vehicle. (The towing package spoils us) Overall, I haven't had to take it to the shop yet and I do standard maintenance on it myself.

Bought in jan.2008.The only issue was a recall on transmission clunking in reverse...dealer fixed over a year ago for free, no problems since. For the price you get a lot of features and room to haul a lot of stuff on vacation, or a trip to the home improvement center.Excellent in snow even with the cheap tires I have on it right now... a lot of other vehicles were getting stuck this winter while I drove right around them no problem! Not as good as Toyota/Honda but I hear that the new Edge and Flex are now on par with them.Great overall truck for thousands less than the competitors...just do the maintenance and you should have no problems.

This car is the worst car I have ever owned. There is over 10,000 dollars of repairs sence I purchased this car. The transfer case went bad twice. The Shift differencial twice. Front and upper ball joints. The break system had to be completely replaced. Roters worp. The rear end had to be rebuilt after 30000 miles. The transmission slips. The rear window and locking system had to be replaced. The rear trunk plastic cracked. The leather seats cracked after 4000 miles. It rides rough. I only get 11 miles to a gallon, 12 on a trip. The speekers crack. Ford Motor company, you ought to be ashamed of your self for putting a product out like this. If it wasn't for the extended warranty I would be in big trouble.

This is my 4th Explorer that I have had since 1995. It is the best one yet, not that the others were problems. I bought it with 10000 miles on it and it now has 141000 miles and is going strong. I try to change the oil every 4000 miles and take care of it. My brakes lasted 75000 miles and the tires were changed at 90000 miles. At 131000 miles I got a tune up and changed the transmission fluid. A wheel bearing went out at 135000 miles. Other than that everything else in the car is the same as when I bought it. This SUV seems like it will run forever. I keep thinking of getting another 2004 with less miles, but this Explorer has been so good, I don't think I will. 21mpg on the highway

I've had the rear differential/pinion gears replaced 3 times, but the loud whine from the grinding rear-end gears continues to return after a few thousand miles. I was finally told that this is normal, and wouldn't pose a problem, but the grinding noise has now gotten too loud to drown out with the radio. My research into this problem has led me to discover it's a very common problem due to Ford's design flaw (the soft aluminum housing expands at a different rate than metal gear assembly). I've also learned the rear end will eventually seize; just pray it's not on the expressway with your children on board. After 1yr/12000 miles, you're stuck paying >1.5K for another temporary fix. Too bad enforcement of consumer protection was gutted in 2001, as the well-known rear-end design problem of these vehicles has gone unchecked. Ford should be forced to recall these vehicles, since it is a safety issue when the rear-end seizes up eventually.

I have had no paint(black) or fading problems, in fact my dealer just detailed it and it looked like it did when it was purchased 5 years ago. I did have the plastic panel on the rear tailgate freeze up and crack at 52800 miles, but Ford and my dealer took care of the problem since it is a Ford design flaw. The vehicle is fun to drive and is usually the vehicle that is taken on longer trips and up until recently, we owned a full size Mercury, but this vehicle is much more fun to drive. My wife has no objection to driving.

Bought this Explorer in Jan 2004 after looking at Toyota Nissan and Chevy. The 2004 Explorer had the others beat in many categories: excellent handling on curvy roads yet smooth riding over bumps and rough roads, V6 has great oomph in town and on the highway, well laid out dash and interior, very attractive and durable cloth seats on the XLS model. Having owned this Ford for 5 years it has been a very reliable and faithful companion. Warranty repairs included a transmission fix a rear differential leak, no more trouble out of either after the initial repair. After warranty repairs have been to install a starter as the old one was slowing down. Thanks Ford for making a great SUV!

This SUV has some real problems cosmetically. The paint begins to peel after a few years, the panel on the liftgate cracks for no reason other than a bad design flaw, and the black trim on the doors fades and cracks after a few years. The worse thing about all of this is that after selling someone this SUV for $30,000, Ford will not stand behind one of their most expensive products and help the consumer out, especially when the design flaws and defective paint jobs are Ford's own mistakes. As far as reliability, I have had no problems yet, but the transmission is pretty clunky, and will probably not last as long as it should. We had a 2000 model that needed a new tranny at 44,000 miles.

It is fun if you floor it long enough to watch it go through all the gears! There is no winding noise when you get up to 6 RPMS its actually a cool sound like a whistle. The transmission went at 17k, rear differential needed repair at 25K. Too many things to list here. Its sold now, and I bought a Honda Pilot. All my Hondas (a 95 Civic, 2000 Accord, 2004 Civic) have been worth every penny. This Explorer I was almost willing to pay someone to take. Don't settle for this kind of quality people. In spite of the low mpg, this model is an excellent reliable vehicle that's great to drive short or long trips. The overdrive is worth it's weight in gold, dropping rpm to so little you forget the engine is running. No road noise, so you know the insulation is terrific. The downside is even the V6 only gets 16 mpg, but that's with the a/c on and doing 65mph. Not terrible considering the weight. This V6 is also a flex fuel, but if you use E85 the mpg is far worse. Plenty of room in the back for sleeping, or cargo. And you can't beat the 6 CD stereo, and the seat warmers that are coordinated with the cabin temp selection. For the sheer comfort this model is a winner.

I bought my Explorer XLT brand new. I had "electronic" issues within the first six months. I had to have the instrument panel replaced twice. Afterwards, I was relatively pleased with the vehicle prior to 50,000 miles or so, but as soon as the Explorer was out of the warranty, everything went wrong. In the past 12 months, I've had to replace all the seals on the transmission, replace the bushings, front hubs, alternator, keyless entry keypad, backup sensors, and the emergency brake. I have my Explorer serviced on the recommended schedule and still have had to have the vehicle towed three times, leaving me stranded.

I purchased my Explorer brand new from the dealership. I was contacted for minimal recalls that did not affect the driving performance. The only problem I ever had was a problem with my back window not wanting to roll up or down. It was out of warranty so I had to pay to fix it. During the warranty period I even had my stearing wheel changed because it started to show some worn spots. I think some of the people who complain about cars don't know how to take care of them. If you change your oil and fluids regulary you shouldn't have many problems.

After the vehicle is warm, going from drive to reverse causes the transmission to slam into gear when I hit the gas. Of course I am out of warranty. Same issue 2 years ago, Ford fixed under warranty, but now not sure if they will help me out. Still waiting to hear, but fix is supposed to cost $2200 to $2700. Yikes! I am also disappointed that the value of my truck has dropped so much. My last Explorer held its value. Maybe the rise in gas prices is part of the problem.

It has been reliable until just last week when the ABS light, Service Engine, and the wrench light all came on at the same time. The cruise control also failed. The throttle body had to be replaced along with the rear wheel speed sensor. The vehicle has 32,000 miles and has been driven with care. Somewhat disappointed with the vehicle. I have had this SUV for just over 3 years, and in that time it's been in the shop for electrical panel shutdown (3 times!), and is now in for major engine repair - two timing chains busted, only 65000 miles. Of course the warranty is up, and will cost over $3K to fix! When it's back from the shop (four weeks now) I am trading it in for a Toyota, before the tranny goes too!

The ride quality is surprisingly good for a truck chassis. Ours has not had any technical issues except for the incorrect transmission oil debacle. The rear axle does have a binding problem (2WD) which hopefully will be resolved with changing the axle fluid. Turning left or right from a standstill results into a rattling vibration. Only regret is not having the canopy airbag system. It is difficult to comprehend that Ford toutes this safety system and then builds so many cars without it. Overall this was not a bad purchase in early 2004 since there was less competition. If we would buy another SUV today we would get a Hyundai Santa Fe or similar.

I've had my Explorer for 3 years. It has 29,000 miles. It's been a good vehicle and I purchased it because of the great success I had with my '99 Explorer. I've been to the dealer for 3 problems. First was the rear differential. Second was rust on the the front edge of the hood. Hood replaced and repainted. Third was the front wheel bearings. All repairs fell under warranty except for bearings. Starting to have some concerns with transmission. Some lag with shifting and occassional noise being produced. Found many tranny complaints on the web. Good vehicle.

At 45,500 miles the front wheel bearings needed to be replaced so I did $ 780. The dealer took the occasion then also to try to take my head off with an unneeded rear end replacement for a gargantuan sum. We didn't even get to talk about the repair needed to the back of the driver's front seat. I should have expected the problems, I guess, because there certainly is enough press about this car. But this was my 6th new Ford and the others were bulletproof. So I guess it was to be expected. No extended warranty and under water for a serious amount, so I guess I'll have this one for a bunch and have more tales to tell if the tranny goes likes others have. Read resignation here.

I love this vehicle. The reliability is great! I get 19 mpg overall and consider that decent for the type of vehicle I am driving. I tow a boat with no problem at all. The ride is complementary and the overall service this vehicle provides makes it a pleasure to own. I did have a transmission recall but that was taken care of immediately and the service dept was quite respectful. The ride is comfortable, the vehicle is easy to drive and control in inclement weather and (With Caution) I feel very safe on the road. I made a great purchasing decision and plan to keep this SUV for some time to come. I would not hesitate to buy another in the future.

My explorer is 3 years old and has 48K miles. The transmission went out - totally. The cab is cramped, there is little leg room for a 5"10" man, and your feet freeze on the passenger side. There is too much engine noise on the passenger side. The gas mileage is poor. Did I mention the transmission burnt up - totally ruined? From now on I am sticking with reliable ole' GMC!

I purchased this, Ford certified, truck with just 15k miles. V8 has decent power but not overwhelming. I like the V8 in the newer (06) Explorers, however the ridiculous interior door release & handles prohibited me from buying the newer model. Good room, quiet & smooth ride. Some ergonomic quirks though. 2nd and 3rd row seats don't fold flat, interior door release take time getting used to. Build quality is about average.

This vehicle is as good looking as any other out there. The quality is good, better than Mountaineer, but the ride is not as good as it could be (maybe because of the ATV tires that it came with). The gas usage is less than the window sticker using 89 octane. Overall it is not a bad vehicle and I am not sorry I purchased it. Ford has a problem with rear view outside mirrors shaking when driving down highway, hard to see behind vehicle, especially on windy day.

I traded in my Mustang GT for an Explorer since I needed a bigger family car. At first we looked at the Escape but decided on the Explorer. We bought the truck in July and went on a family trip in Sept., drove over 4000 miles with no problems. I think though that I might be getting some problems with the tranny now, the truck has 23000 miles. I'll take it in and get the dealer to check it out, under warranty. Aside from that the truck drives/runs/works great. I love it, never will go back to a car... unless gas hits $10 gallon!

Reasonable economy for this type vehicle given what is available on the market today. Has Class II hitch and tow package, handles trailers very well. Great brakes - lasted 50,000 miles before replacing pads on front, rears still on. Great overall vehicle and we checked all makes prior to buying this Ford product.

I think the dealer wanted to move this Eddie Bauer as it had the V8 & most of the options including captains chairs in rear seat & canopy air bags. Got a great deal as it was on the lot for 4 months. Engine is flawless but highway MPG is 18 unless you get off the highway for a few miles & then average drops to 13-14. Lots of problems with transmission shifting but all was fixed in a timely manner by Ford. Ford should get with it on the leather seats with the inserts & make them solid leather. Heated seats failed & wrong parts kept on being ordered by the dealer. Dealer prep was less than desirable as lots of buffing compound was left on. Paid $31,000 for a MSRP $39,500. Not bad overall.

Upgraded from a 1999 Explorer to the 2004 version with 3rd row seating, 4 wheel drive, dvd player at a good price for our family car to handle snow storms. But having trouble with transmission. 3-4 repair attempts so far. Regular driving without towing. Rough gear changes with some lag and lurching. I think there was at least one recall item in transmission and on-going repair method protocol from Ford. Extended warranty may save me some money.

I bought this through my friend who works for Ford in Detroit by way of the friends and family plan. I will never buy another Ford ever. The seats are hard, uncomfortable, and flat. Ford goes nuts over everything being electronically controlled like the transmission. The transmission fluid cannot respond as fast as the electronics. There is noticeable gas pedal delay when you slow and try to accelerate and when passing. The original front brake pads cause the rotors to glaze and then the dealer tells you that the rotors are warped. Do not fall for this if you do not ride the brakes like crazy.

I bought my 2004 Explorer Eddie Bauer early this year. I had one problem with it and that was that the solenoid needed replacement which was covered by my warranty. I also had a problem with the rear windows where the electric motor broke and needed replaced. Other than that, I am very happy with my Ford. I would definitely buy another one in the future. We like our '04 Eddie Bauer, but it should be more refined for the money. I was reading reviews to find out if anyone else was experiencing some of the nuances of this vehicle. The rear hatch is very heavy, and yes, it is hard to find the seat warmer button. However, experiencing the rotten egg smell when you turn on the A/C (that the dealer can't seem to correct) and the sluggish transmission are main concerns. The turning radius is poor, and the car "lurches" when turning tight at slow speeds. Also, the car stalled out once while my wife was driving down the road! Snow sets the rear sensors off and each tire needs its own pressure sensor since the gauge is always on.

My 3rd Ford Explorer Limited. Loved my first two. Bought a Lexus RX300 but went back to Ford. Like this one but had to have rear end replaced after 4 months, 2K miles. Ford was good about warranty repairs. Still a little rough changing gears. Chrome running boards rusty after 1 winter. Great interior features and design. Comfortable and now seems very reliable and quiet. Easy to handle, good pick up, great on long trips. BUT, I wish Ford would take the too numerous seams out of the leather seats. Not good on people who drive in shorts or skirts. '96 seats were the best! We don't need the high "thigh" supports on the sides of seats. These aren't race cars. But, I will buy another Ford Explorer again.

The 2004 Explorer XLS is a great deal for the money. The new body style brought in with the 2000 model adds much more stability and roominess to the vehicle. I am still surprised by its great turning radius, particularly for its size. Sound system is great. Cabin in surprisingly quiet cruising through town, but there is noise when driving on the freeway, as it isn't very aerodynamic. There does need to be an improvement upon gas mileage - the Explorer's Japanese competitors are much better in this area.

(We brought it on New Years Day of 2005) Seats 7. Not a lot of room in the back for groceries but you can get by. Our two toddlers sit in the 2nd row. Ford has put a lot of value into this SUV. We checked other SUVs and they were way too expensive. Ford safety record on this vehicle rated high according to the NHSTA. Not the greatest on gas, but with it being NEW the gas is going B+. The oil filter is easy to get to. I recommend you get it with the Leather seats. Leather seats are the best to buy. My wife loves it!

Liked a little bit of everything in each vehicles but not enough to purchase them. Then one day I decided to test drive the Explorer thinking there has to be something great that made it the top-selling SUV in 10 yrs. Well, I was genuinely surprised by the strong performance of the V8 engine, spacious interior, comfortable ride and great handling. Anyway, 5 months/7000 miles later it's going great!! The interior room is exceptional for it's size and the stereo sound system is very nice. Great vehicle! Subtly stylish, very comfortable, all with superior driving dynamics. Not too big on the outside, with major people/cargo capacity inside. Stable and predictable handling, even when driven very hard- moves very well for its size and weight. Unmatched on- road feel. Everyone who has driven it loves it. The size, safety features and crash test scores make me feel very safe driving it. I live on the coast and it does well off-roading on the beach. So far it's holding up just fine, I have some minor issues but they are all covered by TSB's. Switch to full synthetic oil at first change; engine will sound much better during startup and under load.

This is my second Explorer, and I bought this one because I had so much luck with the last. I'm so sad that it appears I have a lemon. Horrible problems with stalling, rough shifting, hard idle. The style of the vehicle is nice, roomy, and user friendly. But the reliablity is horrible.

I have owned my vehicle just over 1 year and I have had it in to the dealership 3 times due to the air- conditioning. It was making a terrible sound after I drove it a short distance, stopped, and then re- started the vehicle. Yet the dealership could not find anything wrong. Finally, after several months, the "High-pressure Valve" blew and caused a terrible noise/rumbling of the entire vehicle. Once that was repaired, under warranty, the vehicle drove fine and the air conditioner worked well. I also notice a Humming while I am accellerating. It can be quite irritating on long trips when you are in a rear seat.

My wife had a stroke in April 2003. Her right arm is paralyzed and she has only limited use of her right leg. It is much easier to get her in and out of the Explorer than a car. It is also easier to get the wheel chair in an out of the back. We had to find a vehicle she was comfortable riding in and this was her first choice. We have been completely satisfied with the ride, performance and over all appearance.

we've had our explorer for almost three months and we love the roominess of it. We have a 2 year old and a 1 month old. Both seats fit really well in the middle seats. The v-6 is really powerful and have no problems pulling hills. The fuel mileage is about 300-325 miles to a tank. Overall we are really loving having this vehicle, and can't wait to take more trips in it.

Ford has a real winner but needs to work on final assembly quality. We've been to the dealership at least a half dozen times for small stuff: uneven door seams on left side (door allignment), loose RF wheel well moulding, incorrectly installed LF parking light (gap), thin and marred paint in left door jambs, ripped trans shifter boot, defective and squeaking AC compressor clutch (fuel mileage went up over 1 mpg when they fixed that). To the local dealership's credit, they have provided excellent warranty service and parts came in quickly (I'm in Hawaii). Otherwise we are greatly enjoying our Explorer. A solid vehicle with a good ride and lots of room.

Love It!

This is our second Explorer and we have been pleased with both. The improvements in the design, comfort and ride of the 2004 model are nothing short of amazing when compared with my trusty old workhorse '98. If you are looking for a reasonably priced mid- size SUV, look no further. Am looking forward to the development of the hybrid version--have enjoyed driving the Prius hybrid as a rental car and would love to have that kind of fuel economy in an SUV. As it stands now, we use the Explorer for carpool and hauling around town because of the mpgs. Other than that issue (which I admit is a big one) we love the car.

Currenty w/ 1500 Miles on the SUV (V8), the truck gets two thumbs up. IT was a great value ($42000 list) that ended up costing $32,000 + Tax. The ride, siz, and power are all great. The only bad thing I have to say about the truck is the Gas Milage is terrible (10 MPG City/13 Highway).

Purchased this used last week. Heard a whine in the rear end. Took it to the Ford dealer and they are replacing the entire rear end. They told me that a few have come back due to this problem.. Gas mileage is 15 in the city and 20 on the highway. Engine is very quiet. Sometime you need to listen to see if it is running. I think the BF goodrich tires make the ride rough due to the tread design. The front rotors needed turned due to a vibration in the steering wheel between 40 - 6o mph. Purchase a Ford ESP extended warranty over the web from a Ford dealer for a better price. With all the equipment on this I think you will need it!

Although I miss the 302 5.0L V8 the 4.0L I have now still has enough power and acceleration. The 2003 performs well on and off road and in hazardous weather conditions such as snow, down- poors, and is a fun car to cruise around in on nice days with the sun- roof open. Overall I like the new explorer I feel ford did a good job redesigning it.

I owned a 99 Eddie Bauer that was fully loaded, and what I thought was perfect until I got my new Limited. Anything that I didn't realize wasn't convenient on the E.B., quicky became clear. The new design has so much more space, drives and handles like a sports car but has all of the luxuries of a high end sedan. Though, I had most of the same features on my E.B., they have been improved upon. It has such a clean look inside and out. I almost purchased a Volvo. The same safety features the salesman impressed upon, are present on my Limited. I've never owned a car more than 2 yrs, but I drove my E.B. for five years. I may keep this one 10.

It feels nice to be in the driver's seat. Interior is very functional with the 3rd row seat, and it looks good too. Impressive all the way around. There is a squeek coming from the front wheels over bumps or rough roads. It sounds like defective ball joints, but the dealer was hesitant to replace them since everything is funtioning well. I'm am taking it back in to get them replaced because it is annoying and still under warrenty. Nothing major by any means. Highly recommend

I love this truck! I got the V-8 and still get good gas mileage (around 18 before my upgrades) it is powerful and fast. The layout is very nice on the inside and the upgraded sound system is great with its built in subwoofer. The exterior is awesome looking and I feel safe too (I got in a freeway accident with my old one, well i am typing aren't I?). I added a K&N filter charger and a flowmaster so my mileage is over 20 mpg now too. And it is faster too. Also it performs very well off road, and yes i take it off road unlike soccer moms. Only compliant the seats SUCK! Long trips are a pain, literally. But I still recommend this truck.

I decided to buy the explorer instead of a grand cherokee or 4 runner because I liked the styling and it seemed to be the perfect size for my family...not too big, but bigger than most mid-sized suvs. I bought a new vehicle because we were about to have a new baby and I wanted something reliable...that has not been the case. I have had the rear- end replaced because it was making a loud noise. I have had the engine light come on due to a spark plug problem. Two tires were replaced due to "abnormal wear," and the interior has had some problems. I have been disappointed with this vehicle, even though the service from Ford has been good.

Have had problems with the trans from day one! First two times to a dealer they say they cant find a problem. Third time I find out there is a TSB to replace the torque converter etc. That lasted all of 3,000 miles before the trans started to act up again. (very poor shifts, slippage, noise from trans). Oh yeah, and the vibration at 75mph is a pain after a few hours on the highway.

This SUV is truely built "Ford Tough." It lives up to the standers that the Ford Motor Company is known for. The XLS model is built for 5 and is confortable for a small family that requires a spacious vehical. The fuel economy is ok for an SUV and it's also very confotable. This is a vehical for a family with a smaller budget that wants to enjoy a quality vehical!

Gas mileage is poor. Turning is unsteady as front wheels thump when sharp turning is necessary. I have had to have this vehicle towed to the dealer because the key lost its program. The key needed to be reprogrammed. The tow truck driver had towed other 2004 Explorers with the same problem in my area. Otherwise it is very much functional for my needs.

Our Eddie Bauer Explorer makes travel very enjoyable. Very comfortable and quiet--we swapped our OE tires for Goodyear Fortera--really smooth and quiet. Rear Entertainment Center keeps my two grand daughters to occupied to ask how much farther. This Explorer handles so much better than my previous 2000 model. We just love the vehicle.

I recently traded a 2002 Escape for the Explorer XLS. My initial impressions were for the added cargo space and handling. The 2004 Explorer has improved handling with a little swaying in turns, but overall much improved. The blind spots are almost non existent due to the door pillar being further back. The cabin is quiet at high speeds vs. the Escape which was very noisy. For the price this is a perfect vehicle for my needs.

There has been a lot of mechanical issues with this vehicle. I have brought it to 3 different Ford dealerships, (as well as contacting Ford directly) and none of them will repair the vehicle. I was told by Ford in MI "I should of checked that feature when I bought it". I am currently considering filing under the Lemon Law. The vehicle is nice, but Ford doesn't back their product, and either does their dealerships. I don't recommend this vehicle.

Going from a Honda Accord to a Ford Explorer raised some questions from people around me; however, I was and still impressed with how different the Explorers are from a few years ago. I have proven my theory that they were beautiful cars, inside and out, and the gas mileage is not all that bad (excluding uncontrollible rising gas prices). I am really impressed with the whole package and I did not realize that Ford had come such a long way. Having only owned four cars: Nissan Pathfinder, Ford Mustang, Honda Accord, and now a Ford Explorer I have to say that I am completely satisfied. Needless to say, I love my 2004 Ford Explorer Limited.

I find that my SUV rides nice when the tire pressure is checked atleast once a week. I agree with the interior being cheep. My interior rattles and shakes I have a window on the drivers side that rattles loosely and according to the dealer there is nothing wrong. Also my rear glass door latch was defective where is was loose shaking when hitting bumps the dealer again said it was fine, but I requested the latch be changed and the noise stopped. I also found that it hesitated a few times almost stalling on cool mornings.

I have to admit that I am not a Ford lover, although my husband is, but I am very pleased with this one.

This is the second Explorer I have owned, the first one being a '96. I love the safety features on my new one, the smooth ride, and the huge cargo area. I appreciate the option of not getting the 3rd row seat as I did not need it and wanted the larger cargo area instead. My husband has hauled his large riding lawn mower in it. I have had numerous comments from friends on the comfortable seats and the quietness of the ride. It has not had any squeaks, rattles, or other problems. We both love it and the older '96 so well, that we decided to keep the older one, too.

With only 4000 miles on my Explorer, my children and I were T-boned by a car traveling 60mph. The car hit the drivers side passenger door and back. I'm not sure how much the repairs will be yet but it really does not matter since we are all alive. I feel that being in the Explorer with all of its saftey features saved us from serious injury. This is the first car that I have ever mourned the loss of. If they total it out I will definetly be returning for the same exact model, color, everything! And definetely back to Palm Springs Motors! Oh, by the way, we were hit by a guy who ran a stop sign on a freeway off-ramp.

I purchase my Explorer on 3/8/2004. At just 2100 miles, I developed a high pitch whining noise in the rear of the vehicle. I returned to dealer no 3/29/2004 to have them check the problem. They told me that this a known problem, that Ford is working on a redesign of the rear end. HOWEVER, there is no fix at this time and ask ME to call them back in a month. I called Ford Customer Service. They told me the same thing the dealer did and also that Ford does not consider this a safety issue, that there WILL NOT BE A RECALL ISSUED for this problem. As of today, April 14,2004, my Explorer is still NOT repaired and the noise is getting louder!

Good all around vehicle. Around town mileage could be better about 14 MPG. But highway is respectable I get 22-23 MPG at around 70-75 MPH

I think the general public has written off the Explorer brand because of the Firestone fiasco. They don't know what they are missing. In my research, I found the Explorer to be the best all around SUV -- all thing considered. The Jeep Grand Cherokee lacked the extensive safety features on the Ford & everything else seemed too expensive. Additionally, when I test drove the Jeep -- they had to jump it both times & I heard squeaking coming from the engine. All other cars were too expensive in comparison with the Ford. I also have been satisfied with the long term reliability of Fords in general ... problems are never major.

The engine performs excetionally well. The ride is like a car. The Auto 4 wheel works great in snow.Have not tried it on rocky terrain or swamps.Fuel economy is not great. The only problems I have is that it rattles in the back due to build quality. The transmission is slow to kick down to low gear.

I have owned 3 Ford Explorers over the pass 13 yrs. I just purchase my third one and kept my 10 yr old 2nd one as a all around work truck. The new one is by far the best.I remodel rental properties on a part-time basis that I purchase which are in bad shape so my Explorer is used frequently to haul all kind of stuff. But I am a CPA on a full time basis and need a nice looking car to call on clients too. The Explorer meet both of those needs and a big selling point for me was that it holds a 4'x8'sheet of plywood which is a must for me and it is the only one of its size that does that.

While I have not had any mechanical trouble with my Limited 2wd, I have numerous problems with fit and workmanship. The combination of DVD and Sunroof does not seem to be a winning combo. There does not seem to be enough support for the DVD system, as a result there are numerous creaks, groans and rattles right above my head. The hatch and hatch window's plastic panels are also loose and I have shored these up with foam pieces jammed around the panels. The ride is much rougher than I anticipated. Overall looks and features are great, however I am extremely disappointed in the ride and workmanship of the interior.

I have had my ford explorer for over a year now, I still look forward to enjoying it every day. Whether I am in sunshine, rain, sleet or snow I know I can trust it to take me to my destination safely and comfortably. I live in New England area, where the weather changes every minute it seems. This truck actually makes me look forward to snowfall even though I do not like the winter season. I have gotten many people out of snow banks or even up hills on a snowy day. This past summer I had to help pull a chevy van with a 28 foot boat behind it up a ramp since it was stuck, The ford seemed to have all the power needed. I would recommend this truck to all.

This is the most economical of choices in buying an SUV. You get a lot of car without breaking the bank! We got this with 0% financing, and still can't believe our luck! Not only does it get really impressive gas mileage (we're averaging about 19 mpg) it has enough room for all of our junk! My SIL has a Durango- and she gets about 9-12 mpg- and doesn't seem to have as much room in the loading area. I love it!

This is the Third Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer I've owned my first was a 1999 AWD V-8, my second was a 2002 Eddie Bauer V-8 the first year of the redesign and it was light years ahead of the previous model as far as ride control and comfort go. My new one is a 2004 Eddie Bauer V-8 again Ford raised the bar on the mid size SUV's. Please remember this is a full frame truck NOT a unibody AWD car.

It shocks me how well this SUV drives. The steering feels so good that now when I drive other cars, it feels like they are lacking power steering. The audiophile sound system is the best "stock" stereo system I have heard! The door handles are placed near the front of the door so you need to pull the handle and push the door open with your elbow. The door locks are right underneath the handle and you can’t see the locks from where you are sitting looking down. So when I have guests, I need to remember to press the "unlock doors" switch for them or it won't be long before they start cursing at me to let them out.

The best handling SUV we've ever owned (and we've owned a lot of them). Power is more than adequate with the base 4.0 6 cyl. Seats are a bit hard, but supportive. Sound system not the greatest, but then again, it's the standard one. In hindsight, we should have opted for the upgraded sound system.

However if your 6 feet tall or taller the cockpit is very uncomfortable. They shortened the seats and made them too hard. My knee constantly hits the center console and when I switch from gas to brake pedal my knee hits the keys hanging from the ignition. My advice drive it on a trip of at leasr 200 miles before you buy. I will be trading mine next year.

Alot of comfort, and I dont feel over powered by its size.Silver birch is a great color.Handles much better than 2002 sport model but would have been nice to get an extra $1000 rebate but I just missed it.I like the back tail gate set up,top part opens with just a click on the key.Smooth ride,no wind noise alot of room but if your over 6"3 center consoel is to wide and you hit your right leg on it.I think change holder should slide out at the push of a button but you have to open the center to get the change.New saftey features saved on insurance. All and all I am very pleased and I will enjoy my new ride.

This is the third Ford Explorer that we have purchased from the same dealer. The only real complaint is the difficulty in finding the safety belt on the drivers side. It is a perfect vehicle for our use in Upstate NY.

Exceptional power, great transmission, 5sp. Automatic, (so far)Great Handling.Pulls middle sized enclosed trailer (7'x12')very efficiently. Have owned MANY sport utes (FourRunner,Pathfinder,Tahoe,Expedition, Blazer, etc. and this New Explorer is definitely rated at the top of the list. This is a radically different vehicle compared to the old Explorer.Of course we all hope the New Explorer stands the test of time...

Got the 2004 4WD Limited V8. Previous car was the 95 Limited 4WD V6, which I really liked. The 2004 has kept the best of the Explorer and added many improvements. The ride is much better, although it is still truck-like. The 17" rims really stand out and make the truck look great. DVD and CD changer are great options. The wife is a big fan of the dual climate control and the seat heaters. Didn't think I would want the 3rd row seat but it is really useful. Automatic 4WD provides extra sense of safety on the slippery roads.

My Explorer is a great family car. I have the third seat and its quite roomy I would recommend this car the only downfall is it is a gas guzzler (since Ive owned the truck gas prices have doubled). The other problem I have is the seat belts they dont fully retract all the time. I would highly recommend this car its wonderful in the snow and its very easy to drive.

I have a driveline vibration problem since new, this occurs at 30, 50 and 67 - 78 mph. I also have a howling from the rear differential at 67 to 68 mph. My AC Compressor makes a loud shrilling sound when the outside temp is 85 or higher, and wistles also. Seat belt does not retract fully so then it gets jammed in door upon closing, this chips the paint on b pillar, and door at latch side, pissing me off. And most recently, accelerator cable broke and had to have it toed to dealer. Front brake rotors pulsate, had them trued up at dealer but they are still pulsating. I am currently awaiting the outcomes of lemon law proceedings.

I love to drive my Explorer. It handles the road very well and has a smooth ride. If I were to buy an SUV all over again, I would invest in a V8 engine instead of a V6. I would like a little more pickup when driving up hills. I also enjoy the great customer service that I received at Academy Ford in Laurel, MD. I can drop my car off for an oil change and their shuttle will drive me home and pick me up when it is ready.

I had just bought a 2002 acura tl last year, and was very bored with it. I drove all the mid suv's, Pilot, Endeavor, Envoy, Tblazer and was not impressed, the endeavor was the best of the bunch. Then I drove he Explorer. I had liked the styling of the new body style since 2002 and now that the 2004 XLT has monotoned paint and chrome grill it looks REAL sharp!! And in black with black tints, is very nice. I test drove one, and traded my TL. the ride is very good even after coming out of an acura. I got mine 500 over dealer, and with a $3000 rebate or 0%. and free 3rd row seating how can you go wrong? the 2004 Explorer is a great suv.. now stop reading and go buy one!!!

The "new" Explorer is totally different from earlier models. Earlier models were much more "trucklike." This one is as smooth as silk. The engine in my 2004 Limited is a 4.6 liter V8, that is identical to that in the Crown Vic Sport, yet seems even more responsive in the Explorer. Appointments are well thought out and attractive. While I have only had the Explorer a short time, it seems to be a terrific vehicle.

We bought this vehicle in October 2000. It has proven to be a very reliable family vehicle. Great for road trips, hauling large or many items. It has ample leg room for adults in the back seat and is by far the favorite vehicle to ride in or drive in our family. My daughter has said that because of the smooth ride this vehicle has, she does not experience car sickness when riding in the back seat as compared to riding in the back seat of her friend's car. This vehicle is a complete dream to own and drive.

The only problem I have had is a rear axle that whined like some of the "Fords & Chevy's of old". Ford is replacing the rear axle form one the dealership had in stock. I believe there must be an ongoing problem with this part because I do not believe a dealership normally has a specific rear axle sitting around in their parts shop unless they expect to change a certain amount. Cheaper than a recall? Other than that this vehicle is a true pleasure to drive and the workmanship and fit and tinish is far above average. I would highly recommend one of these vehicles, but listen closely for that axle whine.

Car? Truck? We still don't know what to call it. Fun to drive, good-looking, leather can handle lots of kids in and out with sports stuff, plenty of room for everybody and everything. Excellent handling; I can't believe how well I can maneuver it in small spaces. We cruise along at 60 or 70 and it doesn't feel like you're going fast at all. Gas is about $30 a week.

Ahhh the 2003 is way smoother then my 1997 model. Gas mileage is way better too. I feel so safe in this suv. Picky-heat comes out on the leg...hmmm they need to move it back to the floor. But it came out on the foot of the 1997 model which was no better. My 1993 model has the heat right-over the brake foot! Which is better since your foot is not always there. Do not like the shuffle button on the radio-it messes up the order of the cd playing. AND where was the power seat for the passenger in a 30,000 car! I had not idea this was not there! ugh. But I would not buy anything else....

So finally the last time i got the truck back from AAMCO the mechanic said that ford explorers have transmissions from a Ford Pinto except its built a little stronger but when i say little i mean little. from a scale from 1 to 5, 1 being crappy and 10 being excelent i would give it a 2.

I absolutely love my explorer I am a 19 year old college student and it has everything I could want and more. It's ability to handle in weather and its tight turning radius makes it a execellent overall driving experience. The best thing I could say about this car is that it is a beast of a machine. I was rear-ended and the bumper only sustained a 2 inch crack while the guy who hit me totalled the front of his car. The only downside is the lack of boost and the sound system, but my youthful aspect has fixed that.

Ny company leases two Explorers (XLS) and I drove one of them for about a year. This was a bare bones model and I wished It had better appointments. I needed to buy a new car for myself, and chose the XLT Sport. This one is nicely appointed and what a difference it makes! Much quieter and smoother than the XLS. I find this to be a very practical vehicle to own. It does many things well, plenty of room, the ability to haul cargo, and the 4 wheel drive is great in the snow. If someone is going to own one vehicle, this one fits the bill.

I have had 5 Explorers since 1992. The 2003 is my favorite so far. The wider wheel base made a big difference.

This was the first 4 wheel drive vehicle I ever purchased and my first Ford. The ride is excellent and it's great for long trips. Will not hesitate to get another one! Third row seating is nice to have and lots of room when seats are folded down. Great Job by Ford!

i was one of the first ones to buy the new explorer a few years ago. it's been nice. it rides a little rougher than gmc cars but it's good for the money. i had an old explorer with 8 cyclinders. i tried to save a few dollars and went with the 6 this time. people told me you won't feel the difference. wrong! if you like driving like i do, get the 8 cyclinders. other than that, it's not a bad vehicle.

It is a fun truck to ride around in for the mom on the go. It is also great on the long trips too. We frequently go to Vermont and the ride is enjoyable and comfortable in this truckEasy parking with a good turn radius. The storage area when the seats(third & second rows) are folded down is amazing for the size of the vehicle. I found that I have just as much storage space as I did in my Windstar which is about 11" longer than the Explorer.

Every time I drive this vehicle I tell myself what A GOOD DECISION i MADE IN BYING IT.I did not expect an SUV to handle as good as it does.Mine is A V6 and has pleanty of power. Good gas millage. It has not had any problems never been back to the dealership and every thing works. 19,000 + miles. The only improvement Ford could make is more chrome on grill, exterior,& bumper.I LOVE it.

I wanted a van since SUV's offered no more additional seating than a car, but once we got in this SUV with the 3rd row seating, I was in love. Roomy and spacious it fits my growing family well.

Owning an SUV has changed my way of thinking about driving. I truly enjoy driving any where as long as I'm in my Ford Explorer. It is roomy, extremely comfortable, stylish design, perfect color, and good on gas mileage. I may never go back to driving a car again. I thank God for my Ford Explorer. I think every one should have the opportunity to drive a Ford Explorer at least once.

The Ford Explorer has defined what the American SUV consumer wants in a sport truck. The reliability of the Ford trucks, and the charater say "This is me." The NBX allows me the power of a V8 with a rugged yet civilized interior is what most Americans want (especially me). I wonder if the Aussies know about this?

All i can say is that this is one awesome vehicle. My parents bought a new white XLT 4X4 Explorer about a month ago and all of us have fell in love with it. The only downside i see on this vehicle is the black doorhandles on the white body...but you get over it. It's a great SUV.

THIS IS OUR SECOND EXPLORER AND WE DO LIKE THEM. HOWEVER, WE WISH THERE WAS MORE LEG ROOM IN THE BACKSEAT AREAS. IT ALSO TAKES ROAD BUMPS VERY ROUGHLY. IT WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE RECIRCULATED AIR INSTEAD OF ONLY USING OUTSIDE AIR.

I had a 2001 Explorer prior to purchasing the 2003 - WOW.... what a difference. I thought I had a great vehicle in the '01 Explorer - was I ever wrong! Ford made a wise decision in the design of this SUV. The Explorer has the feel of the Expedition but at a cheaper price... and the $3000 cash back and dealer discounts made the buying decision a no brainer for me. Test drive the Explorer. You'll drive it home.

Nice SUV, Only problem with truck is it is it's interior is smaller than a 93 model I had owned. Also the DVD player's scene is right in your rear view mirror when the kids are watching, which is all the time. Still it beats having the kids fighting all the time on long trips. They were never so quiet before. Gas mileage could have been better 16-17 highway!!!! Over all GREAT SUV

Looking for bang for the buck? This SUV has got it. Better Performance than an MDX and more versitile than a BMW and you save 10 to 15 grand.
