Bought this vehicle to tow a 32 ft trailer 8500 lbs over the east coast. Was getting 7mpg with a 2005 expedition, went to 17mpg on the excursion. Did have to replace the turbo, the injector 8 and a starter. But its the only 4x4 diesel suv on the market. If the truck survives a year, without more problems, I'll probably have it until the frame dies.

Great truck except the 6.0L Diesel has a factory defect. The head bolts stretch. Blew a head gasket just before warranty was up. Over $5000 cost to repair. They remove the body to repair the engine which disturbs many electrical and other connections. Some owners have to pay after warranty is up. I like it but not sure I would buy another Ford after this engine. Check the internet before buying regarding this engine.

Had a Suburban, but wanted a diesel, so i researched the Excursion and got the diesel. I do almost all highway driving, so went the first 120,000 on the original tires! The only was problem was the alternator that was $500. Now at @ 165,000, have minor problems from letting truck sit during the summer and using my Honda for gas mileage!

I bought a 04, Limited, Diesel Excursion. I LOVE IT!! YES the gas milage is bad and Yes it does turn like an aircraft carrier but I knew that going into it. I bought it to pull my 30ft travel trailer and my family of six down to Texas from Alaska. It did it with no problems!! I would recommend this vehicle to any large family (weather they had to travel or not).

King of the Road. Great SUV if you are going to be in the car alot. Fuel economy is not great, but also not bad when compared to closet rivals like Tahoe or Expedition. Only downside I see after owning for all these years is it is not the best car to maneuver around in stop and go traffic. Great on the highways and trips over an hour. If they made a newer one I would buy it. Would like to see a little better fuel efficiency maybe 15 mpg. Solid safety - I would hate to be in a car that impacts an Excursion.

We are very happy with the Ford Excursion! Seats 8 comfortably. We love the four wheel drive. Excellent towing, lots of cargo space. Has 33" tires and drives great! Love the front and rear AC, DVD, and wireless headphones great for the kids.

This SUV is amazing. It is amazingly big, tall, fuel inefficient, and difficult to maneuver. But I've got 302,000 miles on the original 5.4l engine and transmission (which works out to 20,000 gallons, or $80,000, of gas). This is a serious SUV that should only be used by those who need it. Even with a V8, it is surprisingly slow. You need to pay attention when you're driving it, and a long trip can be stressful. But it holds a lot and is surprisingly competent offroad.

Bought new and have been driving since. I have 105,000 miles and still have original tires, brakes. Mileage has been an average of 16.8-16.9 though I do mostly highway driving. Only problem I had was the alternator went around 75,000 miles and parts are expensive for this big truck. It is fun to drive and can carry just abuot anything! Great value, too bad they got rid of this truck line!

Wish they still made these....

I own a 6.0 Turbodiesel. This is one of a kind. Bought it for towing capacity (Have my Prius for commuting & Range Rover for off roading) and I am surprised how fond I have become of this truck. It is a shame Ford discontinued this truck. For space, power and functionality, nothing comes close. I have hauled plywood in the back (with doors closed), multiple people with their bags and a 6000lb boat behind me and it does not even break a sweat. I am planning on holding on to this truck as I do not know of any other vehicle on the market that offers all the functionality that Excursion offers. Unlike other reviews, I think mileage is fine for size and weight of the truck.

I am very pleased with my second Excursion. I use it for its protected cargo space extensively. Then you can haul 6 or 7 adults very comfortably. I have had absolutely no problems in 60,000 miles. It is not hard to drive like the reviewers say. It rides great on the highway and gets around town just fine! Really wish they wouldn't stop making them.

We have had 2 Jeeps (which I loved, but not big enough), and a GMC Suburban and love the Excursion the best. I am sooooo glad we bought the diesel even though it is noisy sometimes. Drove over 3,000 miles to Colorado and was very comfortable, I don't understand why diesel is higher than regular, makes no sense. It is the best vehicle I have ever had.

I love the way my vehicle handles when traveling. The ride is exceptional. This is my second Excursion; the room they have is added comfort. You are relaxed when you reach your destination -- not tired and all worn down. It gives you a sense of security you don't get from other vehicles. It serves all the purposes I purchased it for. If they stop making them I have no ideal what type of vehicle i would purchase next. The Ford Excursion has proven to be everything I ever wanted in a vehicle.

So far the diesel engine and all the other features have been tops. Only a few small glitches and three Colorado and 6 trips over 1500 miles with two under three year old kids and this is the way to go. Tuned the computer with micro chip and now get 21-22 miles per gallon on the highway--in this tank, what a way to go. Only had one adjustment early on the diesel and one tank of contaminated diesel which cleaned out just fine. You can't beat this for loading up and hitting the highway. Gets up and roars when the accelerator is pushed; amazing for a vehicle this size.

I love the roominess and all its options, especially the heated seats and the radio controls on the steering wheel. It's roomy enough for me, my husband and my mother and everyone is comfortable and can see out. I've taken two ski trips to Colorado and it holds all our gear and gets around in the mountains wonderfully. We get good use out of the DVD player with the dual features of using the DVD while listening to the CD player. Those 15 hour trips to Steamboat don't seem so long when you have "The Great Escape" playing on the DVD. 18.9 miles to the gallon traveling to Colorado. If you want a comfy, big, monster truck, this one is for you. This truck has it all, go get one and enjoy it.

Purchased this vehicle used with 21,000 miles. Bought it for the room and reliability of the diesel. To date the average fuel economy has been good at 18.7 mpg/average. Plenty of room and power. This vehicle has the dvd option that I would not have picked if the vehicle was not purchased used but found that the grandkids love it. So far no complaints.

I too traded in a 2000 Excursion for a 2004 thinking it was the last year. Never want to drive a smaller vehicle again. Greatly improved ride and quiter than the 2000 model. Improve the gas mileage and keep building these. They shrunk the Expedition and I don't want to go back to that! Need to keep building these!

This SUV can tow anything, haul the wife, 3 kids, dog, gear-and gets GREAT mpg. The truck is large, but it's shorter than a 3/4 ton crewcab pickup. It gets much better gas mileage than a Durango with more space - WAY more. Although it's a 3/4 ton, it rides smoothly, and talk about power - I towed my 27ft travel trailer from VA to FL at speeds averaging 65-70 mph and it never once kicked out of overdrive - and I got a solid 12 mpg out of it - the 2002 Yukon XLT I traded in didn't come close - about 7.5 mpg with less tow capacity. With no trailer I averaged almost 20 mpg HWY. I went 802 miles without filling up. Size, power, range, leather, DVD - it's the dream SUV for any RV/Truck/Family guy

this is a great SUV, that is extremely utilitarian, and very powerful. Lights up the rear wheels with ease and a great trail rig. Took it with me, toured europe and the middle east. pulling up at a stop light and leaving other cars in the dust was great. Also i averaged a range of 700 miles per tank!! I highly recommend this SUV. The diesels rock!!

I cringe at referring to the mighty Excursion as an SUV since it is built on an F-250 frame, has a diesel engine option, tows up to 11,000 pounds, and performs like a truck. The Excursion is not a good choice for "around town" driving. But, if you travel a lot, and have a family or just stuff, the is nothing more practical than the big E. Three essential options: Four Wheel Drive, diesel engine, and the Trailer Tow Group. It doesn't make sense to spend the $ on this vehicle and not get 4WD. The 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel gets 20 MPG on the highway, accelerates well, and starts easily in the cold. The Trailer Tow Group has better mirrors and a rear stabilizer bar that helps in the wind.

My Excursion is a 2003. I love the room and the fuel economy. Have had it over a year and have had no problems. Is the only vehicle that I have bought that I have not had to take back to the dealer and get a lot of small things fixed. Took a 5000 mile trip with it this summer and had 4 adults and three children in it. All were very comfortable. My fuel economy is 18 to 20 mpg at 70mph+ and 14 to 15 mpg in the city. There is no comparison to my wife's Chrysler Town and Country mini van. The Excursion is more comfortable.

From the day I test drove this, I did not like it and had problems. First off, on the test drove and pulled out in traffic. The Excursion snorted bucked and chattered as we tried to accelerate into traffic. I told the salesman that I wanted to go back and test drive one with the V10...He said- THIS IS THE V10! When I went to get out of the vehicle. The door handle snapped off in my hand! Not only has this vehicle been nothing but problems, the dealer I bought this from could care less. I think it even seems to burn gas when the engine is off. Going into a corner with the Excursion is like trying to manuver a drunk hippo.

Love my Excursion! we're a tall family of 5, husband 6'3, wife 5'10 and three kids ages 10,10, & 13 who are all tall for their age. We frequently tow a jeep or sand rail and an occasional boat. Towing ability is great, plenty of leg room for long hauls (500 miles to get to the beach). Great for the winter driving, snow is no worry. Great hwy mpg (16-18) getting kids into town for school with the diesel. 4X4 does great driving in sand or to rocky trail heads. Like the firm ride- doesn't feel like a boat bobbing around like other lrg SUV's. It's big--but worth it if your a big family who travels & tows.

I traded my mini-van in to get my Excursion so I could feel like a man again while driving my family with four girls. What I didn't know was how versatile this beast is. It seats even 8 adults comfortably. It tows almost anything without trying. The ride is very smooth. I took out the back seat & folded the middle one down then camped in it by myself for three days quite comfortably. Here is the one that is hard to believe. My trailer was out of comission so I took off the front wheels of my YFZ450 Quad and stuck it in the back! I took pictures to prove it and I'm sending them to a quad mag. This truck is amazing.

I have a 2002 that I have replaced the brakes on this vehicle 5 times in 120000 miles. They are terribly undersized for the weight of the vehicle and dealer denies knowledge of any problem, even though I have talked to other owners and mechanics, 100% agree that Ford has a major design problem with the brakes. We finally replaced the brakes with racing brakes that were cross-drilled and slotted to disapate the heat (not a Ford product) and know the brakes are working much better.

All I can say is that the only way to own this SUV is to have the 6.0 Turbo diesel, and you get used to the sound. The gas mileage is incredible for a vehicle this size whether in town or towing! We have owned many Ford vehicles over time (F-150, Bronco, Expedition) primarily for towing a large boat over long distances. Nothing we have owned has even come close to comparing in towing quality and interior quantity. This SUV is made to tow! The 6.0 coupled with the regearing of the Transmission in "Tow" mode makes this SUV superior over any other SUV. The interior room is just another added bonus. Especially for hauling all the gear, kids, and dogs.

We love our excursion. I had a 1999 gmc Suburban with only 50000 and it was consantly breaking. The dealership that I had purchased the suburban from never fixed it correctly so I decided to try Ford And am I ever happy I did. The hardest thing for me to get use to is how far the side mirrors stick out I go on some narrow streets and sometimes I woory that they are going to hit something, Other then that I love it. I test drove a lot of other cars before I made my final choice. I was getting 10 mpg in my suburban and now I get 22 mpg. Towing is wonderful and easy.

I have four teenage sons and sometimes tow a 5000lb boat. I bought the diesel for fuel economy -- getting 16-22mph. It took a short while to get used driving this large vehicle, but now I LOVE driving this car. Trips are a joy with the entertainment package. NO new car "little problems" (yet, at 3500 miles). I tend to buy new cars and keep them for 10 years. I believe I made a very good choice for the next 10. Also very impressed with how solidly this vehicle seems to be built, inside and out. Paid a LOT, for this kind of comfort/utility for next 10 years I don't regret a cent. 4 wheel drive gets me up/down drive I haven't used in years.

Eddie bauer Diesel excursion is a fine truck.18k miles on 6.0 diesel has gobs of power and torque and we get 21 mpg at 70 plus cruising and 10 plus mpg when towering our 9000# toy hauler. We have not had any issues with the truck except for squeeking of the rubber door seals when it was new , these went away after a month or so "worn in i guess" Excellent brakes, added load riderite bags in rear for extra stabiloity and leveling. Its a big truck in the city

Every review in the automotive press I read said the Excursion was simply awful. I test drove one and bought it the same day. For the first year I used it in my limousine business to haul folks to and from the airport. A feat the Excursion excells at. Unlike the mag testers I have no problem with manuverability at all. I would not expect this vehicle to handle like a Porsche. I can not honestly think of a single complaint. Possible exception was trouble with the in dash 6CD changer & the monitor in the entertainment package. Both were replaced under warranty.

this is the suv for the traveller who puts on the miles and wants the safety and room to travel. (as long as you can afford the gas and don't mind the shock at the pump when you fill it up.) you couldn't drive a more reliable road hugger on the highway. off road, the truck is solid , tough, and powerful as a bull. No vibration, sway or dippp\ing with this baby. No sir and no ma'am. Ford tough! Ford Quality. You'll be proud to be an american driving Ford's Biggest SUV. I have found the excursion to be a worthy competitor to the chevy suburban. Although gas mileage is slightly worse than the chevy, the power and driveability of the excursion is unequaled. The steering is more responsive then the chevy even though it is some seven inches longer and approx. 1900 lbs heavier. Do not be intimidated by the size of this vehicle. On the exterior it seems almost too big to control, but when in the drivers seat control is all you will feel. The high stance of the excursion provides superior visability in city and highway traffic. Noise levels are at minimum even when on the highway passing big rigs.

Ideal vehicle for tailgating. You can easily haul BOTH person and their gear. This vehicle is solid and has excellent build quality. The V-10 gets 14+ on the highway, 13+ otherwise and has sufficient power. Far exceeds roominess and 'feel' of friends (smaller!) GM Tahoe XL SUV. ONE GREAT VEHICLE.

We test drove other SUV's and always came back to the Ford Excursion. The Expedition is popular and everybody seems like they're buying it, but we wanted more towing power and more room for the family to stretch out and enjoy. The Excursion is set apart from the others and we can feel and see it as we drive up and down the interstate. It's fun, challenging and rewarding. The pricing was okay. And the gas mileage, well, we knew what we were getting ourselves into when we bought it. Had two Windstars prior to this and we accept the Excursion and the 10.2 or so gas mileage. We still put it on the highway.

Outside of having great luck with Ford, I turned to the Excursion because the Diesel engine. At first I thought the Excursion would be too large, but coming from a Supercrew, the size is virtually the same. Here are some other notes- Engine-THE ONLY WAY TO GO WITH THIS VEHICLE-DIESEL!! It is awesome! I drive mostly in city like conditions, and have been averaging 17 miles per gallon. For those that want to know if it is worth paying the extra $$ for a diesel, I did a comparison versus the V10 at 10 miles per gallon, and the ROI is about 48,000 miles of driving. O

My Excursion is my only vehicle and I love it. It's isn't too bulky to drive everyday. I have used my truck to it's maximum capacity in it's many versatile ways - space, towing capacity, 4WD, up- scale passenger room or as a real workhorse. I have never been disppointed. Yes, it is a little pricey but well worth it. No, it is not good on gas but would you expect it to be? It's a V10 with amazing abilities and weighs almost 3 tons. Because of the traction that the Excursion has, I very rarely have to engage the 4WD (and I live in snow country). I haven't had any bad experiences with my Excursion and I would reccommend it to everyone. I LOVE MY TRUCK!!!!

The only thing is that you would come out alot better (fuel wise)if you were to purchase the diesel engine. The gas engine burns alot within the city, but on the highway the gas hibernates!!

The excursion is a great SUV but its fuel economy is very poor. the excursion`s relability needs to improve. The peformance is also bad.How can you pay over $40,000 for an SUV that doesn`t perform well.

We just got back from 6100 miles trip out west, best mileage 20.1, and 17.6 over all. roomiest vehicle ever owned wolud like diffrent front center console, one that would convert to a seat like some others out there. just rotated tires and balanced them, also checked alignment wasn't off enough to change and brakes looked like they never been used. not bad with 13100 miles in just short of six monthes.it didn't come with a rear sway bar so we added one makes big difference.

I am in the Mining business and drive between 80,000 to 90,000 miles a year and the Excursion has been maintance free except for Oil changes and tires. I currently have 144,000 miles and believe I can push her to 400,000 before any real problems occur. If you buy a Excursion make it a Diesel and not gas. Pretty good considering its weight is just 200 pounds short of 10,000 lbs. If you have never driven one you will feel like "King of the road". If you are in traffic and need to get over, most people are just scared to death of getting hit and let you over with no problems. I can say I will purchase another Excursion in the future.

This is my 2nd excursion, the first was a v-8 gas, 8-9 mpg around town. We traded it for a Honda van. We got better gas mileage but lost alot of interior room and security of size. We purchased a 2002 excursion ultimate diesel and we Love it. We will not trade it unless we get another excursion diesel. It is a little better on the gas but love the security and inside room. We also had 2 Suburbans, they had brake problems and did not feel as solid in the ride. The whole family loves the excursion over any of the other vehicles we've owned.

This is our second Excursion. We frequently take excursions from SoCal into NorCal and Central Cal, delivering finished goods and transporting our two sons. With a quick mod on the air intake, we get 14+ MPG, and this includes 75mph ascent on the grapevine and fully loaded in the cabin! We got 16.3 mpg once on a trip to Vegas and back. It's bigger than other SUV's (Largest), so small cars yield and Semi's see us.

We have always maintained between 14 to 18 mpg even when towing. The ease of getting in and out of the third seat is unbelievable. It is perfect when taking large groups of children because everyone can see the screen on the entertainment package. The turning ratio is better than I could have ever hoped for especially when I am coming from a Dodge Dakota with no turning ratio. We are so totally happy with this vehicle.

My Excursion is a 2000 Limited model. We had owned an Eddie Bauer Expendition that we traded for the Excursion. We had 3 children at the time and was expecting our 4th. My other children are older and into a lot of sports, so I needed something that would hold all that. The Expendition has to small storage. I am looking into getting another Excursion. I have heard that they might not make them anymore, so I am waiting for the last year they do. It is my car, I drive it everywhere. It holds everything that I need and keeps me and my children safe. And I love being bigger then everyone else, except for my fellow Excursioners.

With 2 young children/2 car seats, this is our best bet yet! It has all of the room we need to carry extra passengers plus our do-it-yourself projects. It is easy to drive, park and back up. My only suggestion: measure your garage before you buy. We have an oversized garage but many garages can't fit it! One mini-van driver asked sarcastically asked why I drive such a big tank? I replied..."Because I can!" We don't put much mileage on it so fuel economy wasn't a concern. Well worth the $$ and we are very happy!

This monster SUV fits in great when you have several kids. It drives great on the open road, tows anything, and gets great Gas mileage with the TurboDiesel. I have had no problems with it at all. I am getting 15 miles per gallon around the city.I consider that great mileage considering the size of this SUV. very comfortable ride on the open road!

The 6.0L diesel is great gives excellent performance and on highway I get 19-20 MPG, in city gets 15-16 MPG. Drives like a truck-what it is. Feels secure on road at highway speeds. I will keep this vehicle as long as possible, is a great tow vehicle and carries a load besides. Downside is needs lots of room for U turns, is not a city commuter. I would buy another if they are available when this one wears out. Have had only one problem with a sensor in fuel system, fixed rapidly by dealer.

We wanted a large SUV to accommodate traveling with three daughters under the age of 5, their stuff, our stuff, and the necessary traveling goodies to keep them entertained. We started with a 02 Explorer, but it filled fast, necessitating the purchase of an external hitch carrier. Compared to the Explorer, the Excursion is a cave and can handle loads of stuff. We recently packed it with two tricycles, two small bikes with training wheels, a stroller, and a duffle bag. Everything fit behind the third seat! Right now we are averaging 16 mpg combined driving.

Bulletproof is the only way to describe this vehicle. It is heavy, safe and drives like a "rig." I have the wife, three kids and parents-in-law all in the truck and we all feel safe. Everyone gets out of the way or does want to be behind you in this truck. It is amazingly smooth and comfortable. The build quality blows away any GM product I have ever owned or rode in. I traded the Expedition for the Excursion and the difference is immense; plastic bumpers on the 2003 Expedition. The bumpers on the Excursion remind me of a 1950's vehicle because they are so solid. You will never be out of room again with this thing.

I bought a 2003 Excursion with the optional diesel engine and it pulls my 35' travel trailer like there's nothing behind it! The gas mileage with the diesel engine is better than I got with the 2002 Chevy Suburban (Gas engine) I traded in on it. One complaint is that there is not an optional power sunroof available and an aftermarket one is out of the question since the back A/C and heater vents are located towards the middle of the vehicle making the installation of a power sunroof not possible. The "back-up" warning signals are wonderful as are the pull out trailer towing mirrors.

This is my second excursion. I owned a 2000 limited and was very happy with it. Since I knew Ford was eliminating the Excursion I wanted a new one. The ride and handling have improved greatly. It is quieter and the additional luxury options make this a dream to drive. I would recommend getting the diesel engine if you drive a lot of miles per year. For me it is not an issue since we only put about 13,000 miles per year on the vehicle. If you have the need, I guarantee you will enjoy driving this on the highway.

From the Homelink to the tough truck look, V-10 power and torque, heated mirror's and seat's, power outlet's, shift on the fly 4- wheel drive, rear heat and A/C, leather interior, DVD entertainment system, 45 gallon fuel tank, back up alarm, towing ability, six disc CD player, cup holders and interior roominess the Excursion Rock's~!!!

I previously had an expedition but it lacked storage space. I can store anything in this vehicle. the excursion is the best vehicle I have ever owned, it drives well, it is very comfortable, and seats eight very well. I would buy another one if they still make it in four or five years. I keep the expedition for four years. the only draw back is the fuel economy it has none. It likes gas. I knew this when I bought it that it would use a great deal of fuel. It you can afford the fuel bill, everyone should have one. I like everything about this vehicle, I feel that ford has a winner here and should continue to produce it.
