BMW = Be My Wreck 2004 X5, 4.4. When I bought this hunk of junk 3 years ago, I was glad I spent the extra money for an extended warranty. And, before I bought it, I insisted the seller take it to a BMW dealership and have it checked out. It cost me $100, and was found to have no issues at that time. Within the first six months, all the seals for the transfer case had to be replaced - $3,300. Within the next year, it started blowing white smoke from the exhaust, also common with this model. I took it in for an oil change and diagnosis for the white smoke. The repair shop found 3 small pieces from the oil pan and informed me that I needed a new oil pump, another common issue with the 4.4 engine - $3,000. Next, they informed me that, due to BMW using cheap valve guides which wore out prematurely causing the engine to burn oil, those had to be replaced. Another common issue with the 4.4 engine. Cost - $7,000. My extended warranty provider refused to pay for repairs that totaled more than the value of the vehicle, so I ended up paying $4,000 out of pocket. After only six months since the rebuild, the engine is now leaking oil all over the driveway. Total cost paid by me and extended warranty = $22,000. My advice: Never buy a BMW x5 with over 100,000 miles on it. I am now shopping for a 4Runner.

I felt in love when i saw this car at the dealer, i bought it used precertify. this suv is VERy VERy heavy to make turns and to park, its very tiff. I have oil leaking problem, doing my research turned out that most of them have the oil leaks problem after 100k miles or so, so every 2 week i have to add oil when its low on oil. Tires are not straight, they are a bit outwardd inclined, so,i had to change 6 tires in 1 year and 5 month period.,the left mirrow would always come out. Back light will go out often, either the turn, brake or tail light.. i had 2 windows regulator broken and the sunroof regulator was weak. The motor was burning too much oil, lots of smoke come out of pipe if i idle. One mechanic told me it need a tune up, another one says it needs a special oil, and the third says its the motor burning oil cuz of high miles(127k). I had to replace the battery once and it was a nightmate, and i have to replace the key cuz the remote control battery die and there is no way to get a new battery ,, the whole key need replacement. At the end i was getting the "trans safe program fail" light and the car was lossing power, i dont know if it needed another battery after changing it 4 months before that. But im glad i was able to get rid of that car before its brake down completely. I owned for 1 year and 5 month,

very impressed

Just bought a very clean 2004 3.0 6 cylinder BMW X5 with 95k miles on it. Drives like new. Great handling and getting 20mpg combined city and highway. Computer screen has bad sunspots and will cost $2200 to replace (not going to happen). Finding that BMW parts are expensive to replace, and can only happen through dealers. Roomy passenger spaces but very limited back storage area. I drive highways and some pretty rough areas, and this vehicle handles them all well.

Seven years young and still superb ...

Other than no lumbar support ... this is and has been an awesome machine to drive. I purchased it new in January '04 ... now have 165,000 miles and it rides the same as the day I bought it! I have driven cross country (CA to NY and return) four times and have visited almost every state. I service it as scheduled and have had routine problems ... brakes once, front boots, a faulty thermostat when new and a broken brake light. I do have to add one quart of oil between each oil change ... I drive long high speed miles and the engine runs hot I have been told. Since the 1 qt has stayed consistent ... and no engine problems, I'm good. I'm onto to 300,000 miles!

I bought a 2004 4.4i in October of '07 and just recently sold it in Sept. of '10. I drove this vehicle for 3 years and put about 35000 miles a year on this car, a huge number of miles a year. When I bought it it had 39,000 miles and when I sold it it had 139,000. I think this car was a lemon though. It had a vibration at a hard acceleration that no one could figure out and I was glad to be rid of this car because of that. I did have an '02 3.0 before this one and loved it. I am looking at buy an '04 4.8 at the present though because overall I loved the look and sportiness of this car. Also, both cars held their value when I sold them. I broke even even at such high mileage.

Purchased new. Always followed recommended maintenance schedule. 54,000 miles driven as of jul/2010. Front brakes replaced under warranty (28,638). Starting to have lots of maintenance issues. Heat exchanger (34,113 miles). Thermostat (37,803). Front axle boot (47,488). Brakes fluid needed flushing (52,779). Rear brake light assembly (53,353). Front thrust rod bushings replaced (53,793). Told we need to replace other front axle boot. Passenger side a/c not working. What is next? All BMW repairs are not cheap. We purchased a 2005 Ford escape SUV (now with 57,000 miles) and have experienced only brake replacement. We didn't expect a $50k BMW to have these issues. We intended 2004 x5 to be 100,000 car.

The X5 is a joy to drive! Fun, fast, agile, and driver-intuitive. All the reasons you buy a BMW to begin with. But, you also get the benefits of an SUV - more space (though it's not a huge cargo area) and solid off-road capabilities. A perfect marriage, in my book. If you are looking for an SUV and don't want to compromise in the driving department, this is a great fit. Looks great too!

Car was back in the shop for carburetion problems from the time it was new. Brakes are replaced with 50% + of pads left due to poor sensor system. Sunroof hoses pinched during assembly and as soon as a minor amount of dust collected in them water filled both front floor wells. Water ran down over fuse boxes while draining to the floor. Now the lights keep kicking out. Rear wells filled with water (behind access panels to rear light bulbs). All the wiring "boxes" filled with water and now all the junctions are corroded. Rear tail lights go out whenever they feel like it. This car is about the poorest engineered vehicle the devil could have designed. Need a Buick to get parts and make trips.

We purchased our X5 with approx. 53,000 miles under BMW's Certified Pre-Owned program and bought the service package to 100,000 miles. The X5 has been great. We live in Denver and drive to Vail almost every weekend. Average MPG is 19.2, not bad for 300+ HP, 5,000# car. Run Pirrelli snows in winter and Yokahoma Geolander in summer. The X5 is remarkably capable off road - Hill Descent Control is very impressive. The only funny part is the looks we get from other SUV drivers. Trips to the dealer for unscheduled service have been minimal and not expensive.

Best driving midsize SUV on the market. Fast and stylish enough for male and female drivers. Handling is second to none in this weight category. I can only imagine the 4.4 or 4.8 really gets down the road if my 3.0 drives this well! This is my second one and I am very happy with the updated features of the 2004. Must get the extra large sun roof and xenon lights.

My second bmw. I absolutely love it. Amazing ride, comfort and I feel so safe driving down the road. It is perfect for wanting a fun, nice car with the suv (or "SAV") versatility. Handles great in all weather. I was a little disappointed with the depreciation, considering my last one really held its value. Will only buy BMW for the rest of my life. no other car company can come close to their customer service, quality, performance. BMW really stands behind their product.

Our X5 is the most fun auto I have ever driven. It truly handles like a sports car except with the amazing X-drive. On the slippery wet pavement we have the X-5 is simply something special, when other cars would break loose the X-drive digs in and pulls you through the corners, push this machine to its limits and you will be amazed. When my wife drives it becomes the smooth and docile SAV she loves. This vehicle is an awesome combination of great handling qualities for either the conservative or the demanding driver.

I am sooo pleased with my 2004 4.4 X5...Got the Sport pack with 19" wheels...if you are a Town Car person, you may find the sport package too stiff. Great looking body is rattle-free, the brakes and steering are well sorted and it handles like a vehicle half its weight. Tons of sooth awesome-sounding V8 power mate to a tight Steptronic tranny. Articulating xenons are terrific at night. Premium sound with DSP is killer! Panoramic roof is way fun. The Nav takes a few days to sort out; if you can't grasp it, stay home.

While BMW is a well-known name in luxury cars, the X5 falls short. Many options have to be added on with a hefty price tag. Some of the options should come standard on such an expensive vehicle. While there are some problems, the BMW is very responsive with handling and acceleration/braking.

I was more excited to receive this vehicle than any other. Now it is here I have very mixed feelings. First off: Imola Red/Nav/Floor/Sirius/comfort seats/Metal running +pedals/set of snow tires (minnesota). Comfort seats are really great, engine noise great, acceleration great. Navigation hopeless; most user unfriendly system in existence. You can NOT I-pod or bluetooth phone the 4.8is. This 'truck' is great if you do not have a family or a dog (but I do), two front passengers will be very happy. Soon as you try to load anything of substance you start to wonder why you spend 85K (taxes inclded) on it. It is a completely impractical SUV; REALLY think why you want this X5.

Excellent power and handling. It is far smoother than a Mercedes 430 I last owned. The navigation system is not easy to use. It is difficult to program in destinations. It will also not accept addresses at times and wants intersections. The new sunroof is amazing large. Dual climate controls up front and a separate one for the back. The ski bag is great for skiers. It allows the up to 2 skis to slide through the center of the back seat but remains covered. The trunk space is small - this was the reason I originally bought the Mercedes 4 years ago. There is obviously no 3rd row seat option. It is still a fairly small SUV and easy to park in tight spaces.

With every company making Suv's, each company is entitled to their own vision when creating their model. The X5 is an excellent vechile in the standpoint of build quality, and luxury features. The interior is nicely laid out, everything you would expect from BMW. When you drive this suv you'll notice it is smooth. But, it really isn't that much fun to drive. Very average. It feels like the Grand Cherokee I used to own. Living in Michigan, you expect your suv to hold up in bad weather. The X5 is not really suited for this. Very average in bad weather. The Awd system is not suited for heavy snowfall. My GMC Yukon is much better, for much less money in these kind of situations.

They denied it, but my sales person even said they did. Drives like a sedan. Looked better with other rims. Great Sienna red color. Only one in town. Have had it 4 months and haven't had any problems. Cup holders are inconvenient. Difficult to remove and replace rear cargo flap. Can't get the garage door openers to work.

The light reading "Check Engine Soon" will NOT go off. The dealership SAYS I didn't put the gas cap on correctly. Nope! I've tried dozens of times. It is going to the shop soon. Once the A/C just stopped for few minutes. What was that?

Vehicle drives nice, holds the road well, stiff ride, nice interior. Poor electronics, radio / sound sys is so so, electronics are hard to use and program, had to have the dealer come out to program the door garage door operner, he had to call a factory number to get it programmed. backup mirror quit working last week, phone not what promiced (blue tooth comming) don't believe anything about BMW electronics, asume a F150 has better electronics. On Star system diden't work today when my wife needed it. Dealership charged me $50 to program the door keys, to auto set seats and open windows, they still don't work.

I actually have the 2003 model I purchased in 2002. I can't say enough about this vehicle. I live on the east coast and the past 2 winters have been heavy snow and deep freezing temps. I still went everywhere with this truck and drove it like it was springtime. The anti-lock braking system and DSC system which does not allow the truck to fish tail or roll is very impressive. However, people who are not familiar with these systems think the truck does not handle well. You have to trust the truck in an emergency. The only negative aspect is the fuel economy, mine gets 13mpg, I personally don't care the truck is awesome!!! If you can't afford it don't buy

We bought our X5 9 days ago and couldn't be happier. We test drove the Acura MDX, Lexus RX, and Land Rover Discovery, but nothing compared to the comfort and luxury of the BMW. The others are extremely fine autos, and the Land Rover is just an off road monster (we had quite a bit of fun at the dealer's obstacle course), but the BMW was just a better fit for us. Tons of rear seat room, although we could use a touch more room in the cargo area once in a while. The engine and trans are awesome. I can't imagine why anyone would want to silence the I- 6 any more than it already is. You just can't beat the sound of a BMW. If you're worried about mpg, get a Honda.

The car's performance and design is stellar. The main drawbacks are the fuel economy and the interior styling and functionality compared to less expensive SUVs and cars. Performance on the highway is excellent with plenty of power at higher speeds. Cornering is solid, and the responsiveness is very good. There are a lot of blind spots towards the rear of the car and I have had (and heard from others) problems with the rear hatch closing properly and staying shut - ughh. AM radio is terrible, climate control is not very good, trip computer is slightly old technology that needs updating (e.g., trip timer, real time fuel economy, etc.)

Best looking SUV for this size on the market. 20" rims, super-wide low profile tires, deep exhaust tones make this combination unbeatable. Performance almost equal to my AMG Mercedes. Build quality unsurpassed. Cannot wipe the smile off my face when driving it. Purchsed the Imola Red so this is even more rare (everyone has black or silver). Handles so well I've had to set the speed reminder to let me know when I pass 80 mph (which is often). If you are performance minded and want a good looking high quality vehicle, this is the SUV for you.

X5 has plenty of power, smoothness of american cars, solidness of european made cars, looks of japanese cars, and its own class of BMW! just drove 400 mils on a road trip and it is awesome!

It is a great experience and I had the opportunity to drive an identical vehicle on both the road track and off-road track at whatever extremes I had the nerve and capability to handle, so I can guarantee it is stable and will peform as I have come to expect from a BMW. It is exceptionally smooth for an SUV.

The BMW x5 is perhaps the most elegantly designed, sport SUV available. The vehicle rides and handles like a dream. It is essentially a 5 series that is disguised as an SUV. The 3.0 is perfectly adequate for the average consumer looking for a reasonably priced sport SUV. The 4.4 is for the true enthusiast who desires the added performance of the larger engine. We won't even discuss the dream of the new 4.8.

Vehicle is fun to zip around in. The ride is stiff/sporty compared to other Luxury SUVs. The biggest problem I had with the vehicle was that its AC broke down 3 times during the 1st year. Only thing hotter than the Texas temperature was my temper during this period. To have plunked over $50K for a vehicle with an unreliable AC is unthinkable. Once this problem was resolved, I have had a very nice experience overall with the vehicle. The standard Audio system for this vehicle is a joke. Its the worst in this category of vehicles.

However, after just 3000 miles in a week, I wrapped it around a pole off of HWY 169 near Burnsville MN, I think I was exceeding the speed limit by 100 mph, or so. It was a wild ride, all the airbags appeared to work fine. Looking for car insurance now to purchase another one!!!

Car is not worth the dealer hassle. My X5 lease exp. and the plan was to get another one. UNTIL my turn in exp. 2 dealers Bob Smith,& Century both said the car was perfect. I also asked the pick up dealership to precheck the car. They didn't. Finally dealer picks up the car charges $1200 for a variety of small issues. I had a fit, called up BMW,they then came up with an enitrely different list but still 1,200! If known, I could have repaired all items for alot less. I tried resolveing with BMW corporate, no response. They're to many other good choices out there to put up with this nonsense. I just bought the Volvo SUV and I'm happy.

For the $$, you get, "the smile factor". It gives you peep, comfort, safety and surefootedness in the snow AND the rain! Most of all it SCREAMS success without "trying too hard!" (Porsche, H2 and ML & G class drivers can relate.) The Range Rover is successful today BECAUSE it was REDESIGNED by BMW. Asked any BMW X5 driver and very few will complain about the practicality it lacks. X5 drivers like it because it's prestigious, fast, luxurious and a blast to drive! Newer SUVs today offer nothing more but increase horsepower! Like I said, imitated but still not yet duplicated!

The selflevel suspension inactivates on its own, the brake light and rear light and other warning messages constantly flash on computer display. The dealership dismisses problems as burnt bulbs or loose wire. The car is really dangerous and BMW refuses to replace with all kinds of lame excuses. I had a horrible experience with it. Love this SUV's styling. However it has been in the shop 7 times in 8 months for things like: broken fuel pump, transmission reservoir came unsealed , brake line reservoir broke , brake calipers malfunctioned ( twice for this includuing a week for them to figure it out), remote key access unreliable, DELIVERED with broken washer pump . Every fluid reservoir and pump has ben replaced as well as brkae calipers. I had less visits with my Ford Windstar. I am tired of hearing about it's high performance and weight. This was poorly built and BMW of North America is invloved. I am sure not all X5's are like this, but have patience if you buy one.

Anyone thinkig about buying a used x5 out of warrantee needs to have deep pockets. The dealer has seen me so much that I think they are getting ready to give me an award for most visits for service. Two window motors, front headlight, rear light, door mordigs, window sunscreen clips, ashtrays that pop out of the rear door when closing, window washer tank cover broke off. All this right after manufacturers warrantee ran out. You need to buy a Toyota as a second car so you'll have something to drive while the BMW is in the shop.

Take a steep curve at 45 mph, and you will see what I mean; the Xdrive (the 4 little angels in the comercial), really works!. This is the best car that I have ever own. Its worth every hard earned dollar(or pound, or peso or yen)!.

Also, the truck qualifies for the Section 179 business tax deduction, a write-off that saved me $17,000 in income taxes. It is only one of two midsize luxury suvs than exceed the 6,000 pound gross vehicle weight to qualify for the deduction.

This car handles amazingly with the manual transmission and the sport package. After breaking in the 3.0, it responds VERY nicely to the throttle. Stab it and you really take off. Build quality and feature list are examplary BMW. The X drive also performs very well and is pretty transparent.

The X5 will leave most other SUV's in the dust including the VW Toureg, especially climbing up a twisting, winding mountain road. However, it will bounce you along like an 18 wheeler. Fun to drive, yes; on a long trip though, it is pure agony. Styling, it excels. Safety, that is one of the primary reasons for buying it. Would I do it over again, no way, not since I have driven the VW Toureg V8. Although the Toureg is not as fast, it rides like a car, handles like a sports car, and unlike the Porsche Cayenne, it has better trim, and cost tens of thousands of dollars less.

The X-5 is clearly the best handling SUV, has all the BMW virtues (without the awful IDrive) and in 04 reasonable gas mileage. But the car is not as comfortable as a comparable sedan, and doesn't carry as much asthe new X-3! Consider the X5 a personal luxury vehicle that is stiffer and less comfortable than the comparable sedans but because its GVWR exceeds 6000 lbs, it will get you a helluva tax break if it is a business vehicle. If you are spending after tax dollars you should look elsewhere (e.g. the RX330 is much more comfortable and holds a LOT more stuff). Check with your accountant before buying!

The first one I owned was better than this one. In the 3 years I can't imagine why there haven't been any improvements....although it is hard to improve, there are some minor adjustments to be made. I think maybe the tranni is slipping or just isn't as responsive as it should be, may need bigger trani. And there are blind spots in the rear, if the mirrors aren't just perfect. If you choose the navigation system... and a 6 changer cd... the cd cannot be put in the glove compartment.... but has to be in the rear.... most inconventent! The back up beeping drives me crazy, needs cut off switch that's not event related. I just seem disappointed with it a bit.

We have had three 530's but hated the new design, so we went woth an X5. Why we ever drove anything else is a mystery to me. We've had a number of snowstorms already, and the car has been amazing, plowing through six inches of messy snow and holding its own no matter what. It feels just like a car, has a roomy, well-designed and luxurious interior, and we love it. It doesn't have that boxy feeling of many other SUV's we've driven. We've owned BMW's for 18 years, and there's a reason for our loyalty. The 2004 X5 does not disappoint. Now all we need is a little Z4 to match.

I have had the truck two months now and am fairly disapointed to the point I am looking for another car already. First the acceleration with x drive is amazing for a V6, and the handling couldn't be better. However for a $50K car there are more rattles then you should have in a car costing half as much. It has been at the dealer twice in two months for a loose bracket on the exhaust and for a loose sleeve on the steering system. There are loud rattles from the rear gate and the dash that make the car seem very poorly built. The ride on a bumpy road is very uncomforatable.

Yes it is the best ride for the money and yes it looks even better than the previous model. The noise level is also reduced compared to the 2002 model. I got a 2002 X5 that was a pure nightmare, forcing me to visit 9 times to get all the problems fixed in less than a year. BMW North America was nice(?) enough to give me an replacement with additional charge and I had no choice but to get a 2004 model. Few weeks have past by after I got my new car. I have a squeaking steering wheel and a sun roof that wont securely shut.

I bought this car after test driving the VW Touraeg, Infinty FX45, and the Acura MDX. It is not as luxurious as the Tourage on the inside, is not quite as fast in the straight line as the FX45, but it is the best all-around SUV I've ever driven! it handles like a 3-series sedan, and the new Valvetronic just hums as you go 100mph.
