Bought our Xterra at a public auto auction with no history know on it. After putting new tires and a battery in its been one of the best and most reliable vehicles we own. Haven't had to have any repairs or major problems since we bought it. A little rough but runs like a dream. The only thing I notice is the suv is narrower and has less distance between wheels and makes driving it a little bumpier, but not enough to bother me. Kids live the back seat..supee comfy and sits higher than from seats. Feels like a safati vehicle. Gets great gas mileage. Havent played with it in the snow yet, but looking forward to it. Will definitely buy a Nissan again.

In all honesty it is one of the best all around cars you can buy, and cheap too! The acceleration is not bad for what it is, the teams is fantastic!! I beat on mine all the time and if you do nessesitys to maintain it will hold up forever! Mine has 220,000 miles and runs strong, only repairs are on the clutch and breaks, very solid, pretty safe is you drive normally, surprisingly hard to flip! Reliable fun, relatively safe and 25+ mpg!!

Above average but very versatile

Xterrra is a SUV build on a truck base. Good parts of the car: Great room from the ground to the undercarraige which makes driving in the snow very easy. Huge difference in deivimg the Xterra XE in the snow versus a saller car. Excellent space in the car with 6 stereo speakers and multiple USB ports. I installed a JVC radio and it looks and sounds terrific. Kids can plug in cell phones or chargers anywhere. Also not a bad looking vehicle and used touch up paint very effectively. Overall paint has held up quite well. Bad parts: Timing belt at 105K is very expensive. Car can be shaky at times but you have to remember it is a truck you are driving not a car. Gas mileage is pretty tough. I am at 16/22 but can use regular 87 gas. Windshield gets foggy pretty quick and engine is not easy to work on. Well those are the facts. Its a safe car that can be used for a lot of things whether it be taking your kids and his or her friends somewhere to putting golf clubs or construction equipment in the back. It is very versatile.

I hate this car

I bought the car in December with 71,000 miles. I just put it in the shop for something (not sure yet), it was loosing power and slipping. It has NO power and the 4WD sucks. I got stuck in my driveway in 1 inch of snow for 30 minutes one day, and the tires are good on it. It's gotten stuck other times too. I've had nothing but problems with the car since I got it, and I did my research on it before I bought it, no mechanical issues before. It has none of the benifits of an SUV. Also, it is very difficult to shift gears. I have to force it into first, second, and reverse a lot of the time.

One of the best SUVs

Exceent SUV, if you take a little care of it: First of all change to Bilsteins - it will change your driving experience 180 degrees. Second, if you over 100K change timing belt, all other belts; watter pump, termostat. Third, make sure your brakes are good. Now you have a fantastic car - you have to invest a bit - but then you have a true 4x4 that will go anywhere, will start any time, and will drive and feel like brand new. Or much better than many brand new cars, suvs in the $20K range. My wife wants me to change my car to twice more expensive and more cool - I love this SUV - I put some sweat to it and it is perfect now! Love it!

Nothing but trouble! For starters, the a/c sucks! I blow cooler air then my Xterra. We have had the a/c charged & it made the issue worse. It also doesnt blow hard enough for my kids in the back seat to even feel it at all. The sunroof leaks. Ive replaced the starter, battery, connector cables, timing belt, and radiator multiple times & we still get stranded. It doesnt crank 50% of time. Was told it has mechanical issues. Im waiting on it to catch fire! The front grey bumper fades & chips & looks awful! & the sad thing is, we just now hit 103,000 miles. The window motors are going out & the seal on windows leak and make lots of air noise when driving. I hate this thing! My kids hate it too!

Last year, I got a job that required a long commute, and had to get rid of my 2003 Xterra. I really miss that SUV, by far the best vehicle I've ever owned. The only maintenance that was ever required was the scheduled maintenance, I never had a single problem with it that required fixing. It drove smooth, and was surprisingly quiet for an SUV. The V6 engine was very powerful, as we towed and carried many loads across the US without even straining it, there was always more power than we needed. By the time I traded it in after 7 years of driving, the paint was still perfect, the suspension was perfect, the engine was perfect, and the interior looked brand new. I really miss that Xterra. :(

I love this vehicle. Exterior silver w/brush guards, roof rack w/tray. Interior rare black leather interior w/heated seats. Kids love visibility from tiered second row. Rear compartment provides plenty of storage for baseball equipment, etc. Added Bilstein shocks to smooth ride. Adding catback & CAI to address substandard fuel economy & provide boost to slightly underpowered 3.3 liter engine. An issue, not a problem. Currently 20/17 mpg w/conservative use. Handles blizzards with confidence. Climbed NYC snowbank to create parking spot! Nissan should consider turbo diesel engine for this tree-climbing Billy Goat. Love it

Will NOT let this one go!!

I've owned my 2003 Xterra since new in 2003 and I can't say enough good things about this vehicle. Eight years of ownership, driven every day, long trips, short trips, on light trails and pavement. Knock sensor went bad at 92,000 miles. That's it...........my only repair. Of course there is the standard replacements, like air filter, oil changes and brakes, but the knock sensor has been the only mechanical failure. Oh yeah, I got 74,000 out of the front pads and the rear pads still look great at 105,000 miles. My daughter is turning 16 in a few months and this will be her vehicle. I feel very confident that this vehicle will provide her with safe, reliable transportation for years to come.

Our Xterra new in '03 had major mech issues right away. Dealer would not admit the engine knock until 20K when it got really severe. Horrible experience dealing with dealer and Nissan USA to get new engine approved, they held the vehicle for weeks before starting work even though parts were at the local distro hub. This turned me off from Nissan forever. Also had bearing in rear diff fail at 8k miles, replaced under warranty no prob, but weird to have this many issues. Since, the Xterra has been quite reliable to current 90k miles. Several leaks (oil pan, valve cover) which are due to the eng replacement at 20ku, but nothing severe. Looks and runs great now

I have just over 99,000 miles on my Xterra, and I have already had to replace a cracked exhaust manifold and the supercharger. Now I am being told that the head gasket is leaking. I love the styling and capability of the Xterra, but I have been very disappointed by the reliability. I don't know if the 3.3 liter engine was not properly designed for the stresses associated with the supercharger, but it has definitely not lived up to my expectations.

Great mom car! Back doors a little small, HUGE trunk area, great style. Built tough, I hit a deer going 60 mpg and had absolutely nothing wrong with it. No complaints about the look or feel of the car. My only single complaint was gas mileage, 16 hwy, 11 or 12 city. Just recently sold it because I couldn't afford constantly putting gas in it, but mine was super-charged so that didn't help. If you don't care about the gas mileage, then I would say go for it! Only had to be in the shop here and there for minor problems. Some day when I have more money, I will be getting another one, and I can't wait until I do! :) Just sold it a few weeks ago, already miss it like crazy!

I traded my 04 FX35 with 59k on a 5 speed,03 Xterra with 103k miles in March 2010. Did a major service with timing belt and the works then put a set of beautifully aggressive and very quiet Goodyear Wrangler Dura Trac 265/75/16 tires on it, drove it from Los Angeles to Moab,Utah for the Easter Jeep Safari. I completed the "Top Of The World" and "Fins and things" trails which are rated difficult with this awesome show room stock vehicle. This vehicle is absolutely impressive and I do not impress easily having owned a few "built" off road rides. Now back in L.A. and drive it daily about 50 miles in total comfort. I love my Xterra more than anything I have owned. Nissan has created a gem.

My main complaint is the engine and transmission. Reliability is good, only replacing the exhaust manifold in 85,000 miles. But the engine is extremely weak (I have SC model), and the 4 speed auto transmission shifts very rough. Engine takes 15 minutes to "warm up" before the engine and trans are even acceptable for use. The supercharged engine only performs well in dry 60-70 degree weather. I live in Michigan, and we rarely have dry 60-70 degree weather. If I ride alone and temp is optimal, the car is fun to drive, but if i carry passengers, its sluggish at best. Gas mileage is unacceptable for a V6! I rarely get over 13mpg in city driving even when i baby it! Highway mileage is no better!

Fun and Dependable!

Had some issues with the power windows and had them replaced under warranty. Still have occasional problems with it. Had a significant problem with the A/C, basically had it replaced only after 3 years. The first repair under warranty was poorly done by dealer. So, I had to pay out of pocket. I drive several hours at a time occasionally and would like to have a more comfortable seat. Fuel economy approaches 20 at 65 using fully synthetic oil. Needs a bit more highway merging power about 15-20% would do.

This suv is fun to drive! It has lots of room for all your stuff, even when we had our first child. Infant and toddler car seats fit - but snugly. Unfortunatly the back doors do not open wide enough. It can be tricky getting an infant seat in and out. Has enough pick up and go to really move.

I really love my Xterra. The only fault I see with this truck is gas mileage! I have had all of my service done on time, but gas mileage continues to diminish. We drove this vehicle on a 500 mile trip and got 11 miles to the gallon highway. I hate to get rid of my truck, but I'm gonna have to. It has been parked for 2 months because of the gas mileage. It's hard to pay for something you can't afford to drive. The major problem I am having is finding something that I like as much or better than my Xterra. There's not much out there.

I bought it in Jan 2004, and have loved it ever since. The "stadium" seating in the back is great for passengers - it lets them see, plus it adds a cool exterior styling, which turned me on to the vehicle in the first place. The interior is pretty basic, but functional. I have had no major issues, with it, just a couple of things: I had a check engine light come on frequently, it ended up being my catalytic converter, which was replaced under warrantee. I also needed a front brake job at 35000 miles, which seemed a bit early. Other than that, the truck has been bulletproof. I only wish it had more power and better gas mileage.

No Regrets!

I bought my SE 4X4 new and no complaints. Yeah, some people complain about the gas mileage, well, it's no Corolla but guess what no true SUV is. If you want great gas mileage, don't buy an SUV. But, I cannot say enough good things about this truck. It is good in city driving as well as perfectly capable in off roading situations. I get decent mileage about 19 in city, 25 on highway but I don't drive like a race car driver either. The interior is spare because that's part of the look. If you want luxury and 4X4 buy something else. Overall, I LOVE my Xterra and cannot seriously criticize it!

I bought this SUV to be able to get up the hills around here (VA) in the snow. Now have 91,000 miles on it, it has been great both off road, and in reqular use. Get 18.5 mpg in mostly highway driving. This truck is fun to drive with the 5-speed manual, and it does everything I expected. I have had no problems and would get another one in a heartbeat.

This is Xterra #2 for me. My first was a 2000 XE V6 which I thoroughly enjoyed. I had it around two years and put around 30,000 miles on it before I needed money for getting married and buying a house. Now a couple of years later I've replaced my lost treasure with a 2003 SE 4x4 V6. There's really no difference inside except for the gauges and radio package. The Fosgate sound system is awesome and the sub really hits nicely. The transfer case shifts nice and smooth with easy transistions between 2 and 4 wheel. This X has really lived up to the expectations and quality that I know to expect from Nissan.

I wanted tough style (didn't want people to confuse it with a family car), storage space (for weekend get- aways), dependability, and the feel of fun when driving anywhere. I got all four. My SE trim Super Black Xterra is still to me the best looking SUV around, with its brash and bold look and its shine when the Super black color is waxed, along with the tall charcoal wheels and rugged tires with the raised white letters. It drives like a Truck, which suits this TEXAN just fine.

I am past the "soccer mom" stage and wanted something FUN to drive. My entire family drives, or has previously driven, Nissans so the choice was easy. I would only trade my 2003 Xterra for a new one. It is the perfect weekend and/or tailgate vehicle. The seats are a bit uncomfortable but the Rockford Fosgate stereo ROCKS ! You don't buy an Xterra for the mileage but it is as good or better than most SUV's. I highly recommend the Nissan Xterra !

All my ratings we're based off of the several SUV's and trucks that I've driven from an Explorer, Expedition, Tahoe, Denali XL, Jimmy, Ranger, F150, C1500, and CRV. The Xterra is its own vehicle and that's why it shines. The mileage and highway driving are not fun. I fear merging with this car b/c of the lack of power. But the sheer massive truck presence of the Xterra makes up for it. The hard engine sounds and road noise from crusing at 65mph sometimes does bother me especially when I see my gas tank meter drop. Going w/o a LSD was a big mistake. Interior is shabby but its a truck what do you expect. Overall a good performing truck however, I'm starting to realize I like small cars.

Before I bought the Xterra I did a lot of research. I needed an SUV with 4wd that was under $30,000 that was big enough for a family of 4. The gas mileage for the V-6 is not the best, but if you want better mileage then you're stuck with a 4 cyl micro SUV with little cargo space.Cargo space kicks butt in the Xterra compared to other SUVs below $30k & the roof rack is SOLID TUBE METAL not flimsy plastic.I strapped lumber, doors, & other big stuff with no problems(Max weight is 20lb) You do have to remove the rear seat bottoms to have the seats fold flat, which is good and bad.The Xterra drives like a 4x4 truck,it is no where as bad as a jeep. But like a jeep you will never get stuck in snow & mud.

I absolutely LOVE my xterra. Everything from the inside to the outside. I love the way it sets up really high off the road. It makes seeing around traffic easy. I love everything...everything...except the gas mileage. I am trying to decide if I should sell it and buy something with better gas milage. I am so torn because I love my Xterra. If gas milage is not an issue... you will LOVE the xterra. I get about 15 mpg. I have owned 3 maximas and put 250,ooo miles on each.... So to me the name NISSAN says it all. The durability will outstand any of the competitors by far.....

At first we were looking at the Jeep Liberty, but decided to compare it with the Xterra because it was priced about the same. I have to say that we are very happy with our decision. This is one of the better truck-like SUVs you can get for the money. I say truck-like, because its not fair to compare it to those car-based SUVs. It rides like a truck, sounds like a truck, uses fuel like a truck...just like a sport UTILITY vehicle should. If you're looking for a car-like grocery-getter, look elsewhere. It has been driven in 18" of snow on unplowed dirt roads in Pennsylvania and on snow-covered roads across West Virginia to Snowshoe Mtn. ski resort, and it performed beautifully.

This was the first time I bought an SUV.My first choice was a Hummer but the price was too high for me. My second choice was an Xterra. I bought this vehicle because I believe it delivers what it claims to. I enjoy driving it a lot but the front seats are too small and not comfortable as comfortable as they should be. The fron seats leg rooms are not sufficient. The engine could have used much more HP. 189 HP is too weak for the weight of this SUV. Fuel consumption is very high for a vehicle of this size. So far I have had one recall and two minor service works done. I am told that 2005 model is a much improved vehicle. Will I buy another one? Yes,I will.

Thought I wanted an SUV. Picked Xterra based on looks. Hate driving it. Gas mileage is awful and it rides like the tires are made of metal.

After one year and 12k miles, nothing's gone wrong. Pros: I love the rugged look of the outside, the big tires, the material of the cloth interior, the stadium type seating on the back. Cons: It needs more power (I guess they knew that, look at the 2005 X), intermitent rear wipers, the plastic console looks cheap and the roof rack, although very nice looking and sturdy, could use some more rings to hook up straps. Overall, I'm very happy with the truck. Look forward to the '05.

Sorry to see it go...

but after 10 months, I just cant live with the crappy mileage. I fill the tank (39 bucks) and I get about 275 miles out of it. And now, Nissan says that the 05's are even bigger, with even worse MPG. I'm sorry to see the last pure SUV for real people go this direction. If it were'nt for the gas suck, I'd keep it forever. Rides nice, looks great, great offroad, etc. Just decided to go the other way. Honda Element, here I come!

Love the "X"... family trips are a kick for everyone, even the kids in the backseat!!! I love driving it, looking at it, and this is the first time that we do not complain making monthly payments, that's how much we love it. Positive handeling, power enough to climb whatever, room enough for your arms, legs and heads, kickin' stereo, and all that air bag stuff makes us all feel safely tucked away...ours is avalanche white and has everything but auto transmission (wanted a 5 speed) and supercharge (didn't want it).

MAJOR power steering problems. Not a smooth ride. Great sound system. I average 16.2 mpg between city & freeway. For optimal performance of supercharge, you need premium gas. The extra money you pay for supercharge is not worth it compared to the regular model.

This is a great SUV, I have really enjoyed it. Great on and off road, 4x4 is much better than 2000 model. Effortless hill climbing with the super charged engine. Flew up the continental divide in Colorado, no engine strain at all. Design inprovements from earlier model are noticeable.

I had the 2002 xterra, and at 30k miles I totalled it in an incident with black ice...hit a concrete guardrail, bounced of the back side and plowed across three lanes of traffic into the center railing....didn't hit anyone, didn't flip...and walked away. Great car, I feel very safe in it. I bought a new one from the dealer a week later.

We bought our xterra in june and drove it from Salt Lake City to Anchorage Alaska the very next week and had absolutly no problems. The day I bought it I immediately went to the shop and threw on a Magnaflow catback exhaust because I heard the gas mileage was bad. I also threw on a air intake for it and loaded the thing up for the trip. We averaged over 20 miles to the gallon on the trip and had no complaints. We didnt want the s/c because of the premium fuel. The horse power greatly increases also and it only costs around 300 bucks which was well spent. Overall no complaints here.

Xterra is not too big, but carries everything I need. The 4WD goes through anything. Biggest drawback: gas mileage. EPA projected 17/20 for the 5 speed Xterra is a joke. I get 13 around town and 16 on the hwy. If gas mileage is important, pass on this truck. If it doesn't matter, go ahead and buy it. Other negatives: Heater/AC system doesn't work well, the 4WD gets stuck (requiring one to go into reverse to unlock the hubs), and there are no drip rails to keep rain and snow from falling on the seats when you open a door.

Everything they said about it was true. The gas millage is lackling and the ride is hard for 500 miles of highway, but man cannot live by gas millage alone. The Xterra does what I bought it to do. Take Scouts camping and get in rough areas with ease. I don't notice the whine of the suppercharger but you can feel the power when it is need and I am very happy with my choice

I've only owned my new Xterra for a few weeks so far. But, I've been looking at them for over 6 months now. The Xterra is great looking, and very fun to drive. I'm new to suvs and trucks, but I'm sure this is a typical feeling truck based suv. The steering is very numb, but again, I figure that is normal. Freeway driving is much more comfortable than expected.

I LOVE my little Xterra! I bought it because I needed towing capacity but didn't want a huge SUV or a pick-up. My camper weighs approx. 3500 pounds fully loaded and it tows my camper like a dream. It uses far too much gas however. The first time my teenage granddaughters saw it they said, "Wow, Grandma - that's so trendy!" I feel like the coolest person on the road when I am driving it!

over all a very pleasent vehicle if not a little under powered and hungry on gas. I have had the opertunity to use it to tow on a long trip,(240 miles and towing 1000lbs) and it was not bad, but was hard to keep up to speed without shifting down a gear on hills. Have yet to use it in snow, but I have heard about it's good off road capabilities so I'm looking forward to it.

I Find the Xterra is fun to drive. It outclimbs most other cars on the hills and find the it is a very smooth ride on the freeways... I find one piece of equipment missing in the vehicle though and that would be an oil pressure gauge.. I would much prefer this to the standard idiot light that usually tells you when it is too late. The service through the dealer has been outstanding too. I would buy another one if I ever need too. But I feel that my xterra and I will be together for a long time...

I HAD TO TAKE MY TRUCK BACK 3 TIMES TO FINALLY GET THE BRAKES TO FEEL NORMAL. I DONT THINK MY ABS IS WORKING ANYMORE AFTER BRAKE FIX TIRES LOCKUP NOW. THE SOUND WHEN I COLD START THE TRUCK, THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR ABOUT THREE MONTHS. WINDOWS RATTLE. BAD GAS MILEAGE TOO - 16 TO 17. I have not gotten stranded anywhere I've gone off road. The clearance is 10.3 inches (tallest in it's class). Xterras have an excellent approach angle. The fuel mileage is not bad (18.5)for the weight:engine size ratio. Get the SE/SC model if you can cough up the cash. Plenty of leg room for all 5 (five) passengers and room for lots of gear (for 2-3 people). Roof rack is sturdy with lots of optional attatment available from YAKIMA.com Audio equipment is awesome. A/C and heater work great. There is lots of room in the fender wells for big meats and turning radius is tight. Test drive one and see for your self, not just on the pavement either.

Very good SUV, if your looking for outdoor fun, with plenty of power coming from the supercharged versions. Have had no problems with this vehicle at all. Gas consumption is a little heavy though, so expect it if you're going to buy. Extremely comfortable interior and ride, given the fact that it is built on a truck platform. Good Purchase for those looking for a serious SUV.

I had originally planned on purchasing an XE/SE model but opted for the S/C for all of it's upgrades (fat tires/charcoal rims/black&blue interior/and oh yeah, the supercharger. For those of you looking for an SUV that has the off-road capability of a Wrangler; go for the Xterra. It's a blast to drive. I didn't get the same excitement from the VUE, or the CRV. I reccommend these for the grocery getters out there. But if you're the type to strap some kayaks, or mountain bikes to the roof, the Xterra will get you anywhere you want to go.

I've had my Xterra for just over a week and I love it so far. Still, I REALLY wish the steering wheel tilted up higher. I'm 6'4/300 pounds and the extra room would come in handy getting in/out of the car. Other than that, I have plenty of leg room. Also, my gas mileage seems to be pretty marginal at best. I'm hoping that it will get better as the engine gets broken.

I would not recommend this vehicle for anyone with small children or anyone that plans to be using it on long road trips. The ride is so bumpy and on long trips it can get very uncomfortable. If I had to do over I would buy something more expenisve with a smoother ride and something that was quieter on the highway.

I just passed 5000 miles on my Xterra. I have found that the more I drive it, the more I like it (this is my 11th new car, but my first truck/SUV) Very solid and comfortable for a truck. My wife went on a short trip (400 miles round trip) with two adult lady friends and found the ride to be very pleasant. Utility for hauling is very good. Folding the rear seats does let you haul a 4x8 sheet of plywood (with the hatch open). I have an XE 4x4 with an automatic. I'd save my money and avoid buying the SE or the supercharged version. Absolutely zero problems so far.

This a very capable and solidly build SUV, the vehicle does double duty for me as my wife utilized it as a daily driver and then for family recreation utilizing it for camping/fishing go offroad to some places (exploring). So far we luv' the Xterra and hope to enjoy its usage. Highly recommend the top of the line model SE/SC model.

Thumbs Up for XTerra

I love it!! Stadium seating for back passengers, Great Idea! Roomy, First Aid Kit, Comfortable to drive. The only thingI had to get used to was the automatic window controls. I have the Rockford Fosgate system and it sounds Great esp for a stock system. My husband didn't even want to change it! THANK YOU NISSAN!! but what is the square thing on the back?

I see a lot of reviews which mention wanting a smoother riding SUV, well folks you probably got the wrong SUV. The Xterra is a truck based SUV, not some vehicle that evolve from a 4 door sedan. For the price and capability, it is an absolute bargain compare to other cute utes'. Recommend you get the 4WD supercharge model, a fun to drive vehicle.

My advice if you are planning on buying an Xterra: go manual (especially windows) and make sure to get plenty of racks because you won't want to put anything with an edge near the cheap plastic interior. Leave early if you are going up any hills, because its going to take you a while to get there. And if you plan on listening to CDs in the factory CD player, keep tweezers handy so you can the CD out.

I like this truck. My other is a 4Runner, so it's hard to expect too much from this one. However, I'm still pleased with my purchase. The manual 4- cylinder is fun to drive, but lacks some power; only 143hp. The interior with power option package is of average quality but does the job. The exterior has a simple but rugged personality. On the 4-cylinder, expect to see about 3200 RPM while doing 70mph on the highway; maybe contributing to the somewhat disappointing gas mileage.

This is my first SUV. After looking at several different models, I decided on the Xterra. One of the biggest selling points to me was its off road capabilities (getting up in mountains during ski season can be quite a challenge in a small sedan). The gas mileage could be improved, but so far I am averaging 18.5-19 between city and highway driving. Not to bad, but could be better. Have read several reports on wind noise, but you must realize that whenever you add a rack on top of a vehicle the size of the X, it's going to make some noise. Had a ski rack on top of a Ford Focus - talk about noise!!!!! All in all, I love this SUV.

The vehicle is reliable but needs improvement on gas mileage and smoother riding. It is not comfortable on a long trip, nor is it gas stingy. It is, however, a good vehicle in which to haul goods, passengers. The high step to it often bothers shorter people.

I purchased my 2003 Xterra color Silver Ice on Feb. 2003. Up to now my SUV lives up to a comment issued by Motor Trend: "Spare me the leather, wood and chrome: This is no BS SUV" And it certanily is. In over 5 months I have racked over 10,000 miles traveling since I am a consultant providing service to several pharmaceuticals in Puerto Rico and this baby has been bullet-proof and is a excellent vehicle to travel in bad weather. Its comfortable and its in-your-face-anti- bland style really stands out when compared to other SUVs such as Honda's CRV and others.

I have only had the XTerra for two weeks and it is absolutely the best vehicle purchase I have made in 25 years!!!! Fun, durable, reliable, and easy to drive. It has the necessities of a truck/SUV but the handling capability of a car. It looks great all cleaned and waxed for a luncheon with clients; or all muddy and rough for a weekend camping or hiking. This is a true SUV. It does what the ad says it does. This SUV is not just a raised car for those soccer moms. This is a vehicle for those who are truly outdoors and adventurous people and will need a truly a tough, solid and reliable SUV to take them there. The price, fully loaded w/o leather seats, is the best value for a quality SUV. The HP is not enough. Only 180 HP under the hood and could have easily used another 50 HP. Buy it if you want a true SUV and not a fancy raised car, but do not get it in yellow!

Now I've been drooling over the XTerra for a couple years now so it was a dream come true to finally purchase this vehicle. Everything is like I thought it would be. For one thing I drive hard and rough. I love to go off- road, and this is what it's made for. This thing is just a blast for me to play with. On the road driving is decent, can't complain. It takes a while for it to get up to top speed, but that something I can deal with. The MPG is insanely low. I average about 14 MPG, and that's just not right, but I deal with it. Comfort it great for the front seats, but in the back I'm not to sure.

I have only had my Xterra for three days and so far I have no complaints. The 6 cylinder seems to be a little underpowered but it has enough get up and go to get out of its own way..which to me is the important part. I got the Xterra to have more room for my hiking/capming gear and my two dogs. I really like driving the Xterra it is a lot of fun and the fuel economy is not that bad..it gets a lot better gas mileage than my truck (01 Toyota Tacoma).

I didn't shop thinking about the xterra. All I knew is that I wanted a SUV. The saleman said, "what about this?" All I knew about it is that it that integrated first aid kit-cool. I bought it, they threw in a trailer hitch and I was out of there. I now absolutely love this machine. I aim for bumps and dirt whenever the chance arises. My mountain bike accents the xterra so well.I thought about the jeep liberty afterwards, but that thing is just a little too "cute" for me. just need more power. When I want it to move, which it does, I feel that the engine is working too hard and I think I can see my gas needle falling. everything else is great.

You pull out any where with good distance and within seconds the car you pulled out in front of is on your tail thinking your an old person when really your a 19 year old driving a big ol' piece of junk. The X is an Awesome SUV! I test drove a lot of other SUV's and the X just offers more bang for the buck. -Get the 4-wheel drive. As soon as you get it home you want to get it muddy. And 4x4 insures your ride home-not INTO the mud! -I bought the X with the stereo upgrade, but an in-dash DVD nav sys would be nice. I have a handheld and that is better for me anyway. (I can take it with me into the woods). -I like the engine configuration. It is mounted rotated to the left. This also allows easier maintenance for mechanical and electrical systems. The X is a very well thought out design and is truly driven by what's inside, the 24-year-olds that buy it.

Overall, the truck is pretty good. No problems since new (6500 miles) except for some sqeaking in the suspension somewhere. The interior (cloth seats) could be more comfortable. The suspension is too soft. For a daily driver, it does OK. However, towing leaves ALOT to be desired. Towing a 3000-3500 lb boat is a big load for it and it lets you know it (HP, braking, and horrible gas mileage). I would not feel safe towing the max tow rating of 5000 lbs with this truck. If I had it to do over again, I'd buy the Explorer V8 or 4-Runner V8.

I realize that fuel economy is something you usually trade for the power you get from an SUV, but the Nissan Xterra drinks gas like water, and still has trouble picking up enough speed to merge onto a highway without getting rear ended. This truck is competent to get me to and from work everyday, but I'm hardly impressed by the way the engine races before kicking in everytime I ask it to get me someplace in a hurry. I reccomend going for the supercharged model. Also, why does the steering wheel have to be so close to the seat? There is barely enough room for your legs, even after you adjust it.

I have owned my 2003 Xterra for 3months now. I haggled with the salesman and payed $24,600 for a Silver 4x4 SE, with floormats, and microcabin filter. The Xterra has adequate power, great features, and seems very durable. I have had no problems and have no complaints. The ride is very smooth in the Xterra as the wheels absorb any potholes or bumps you might hit rather well. Cabin noise is also very quiet. The instrument panel is well laid out an I especially like the radio controls on the steering wheel. The Xterra is a solid vehicle and provides a good view of the road. It also provides good acceleration and I'm able to merge and pass traffic easily.

We waited for the supercharged version to come out and are very glad we did. We picked up the electric blue, stnadard for the family and to tow my ducati on an open trailer for racing. In texas the roads are fast, so 80mpg is pretty normal and no problem with the trailer and loaded with gear. Gas milage is another issue. I get 120- 140 miles on a tank and 9mpg when towing. Ouch! Price was great for what we were looking for as well.

After comparing all the small and midsized SUV out there, this one stood out. First, it's a REAL SUV based on a truck (Frontier). Second, it has the bas tow load (5,000lbs) and Third, the most exciting look. My wife and I bought the Xterra to do many duties include hauling my tools/building materials and traveling in any condition. Our Solar Yellow Xterra stands out from all the cute 'utes and posers. I have nothing but good things to say about my Xterra. I've owned it for 3 months now, and the only thing I could complain about is gas mileage -- but I knew that going into the deal. The 4WD is terrific -- 12"+ snow banks were no problem at all this winter. The various tie-down points and metal hooks around the cabin are great for securing anything. And the heavy-duty rubber floor mats are a must-have -- they've kept the dirt, salt, and sand off of the carpeted floors.

This is my second Xterra, I had a 2000 XE 4X4 for trade. I loved my old one, but wanted the extra 40 HP from the S/C and it's really nice to have it. I noticed that this one has a lot more of a bouncy ride than my last one; it might be from the bigger tires and rims or maybe a different suspension. The S/C gives it a lot of power off the line and it's nice for passing. I only have about 500 miles on it so far and haven't really driven it on the highway too much, so can't comment on that or long drives. Like others have said I wish it got better gas mileage.

I've had my '02 XE S/C 4wd for just over 6 months now, and I couldn't be happier. I'm coming from a '96 Blazer that was as reliable and fun as anyone could ask, but I don't miss it a bit. My only complaint about the Xterra is having to remove the back seat cushions to fold them down flat. They either take up space or you have to leave 'em at home. Other than that the truck rides great and is a blast to drive. I couldn't ask for more. I would recommend this truck to anyone who seriously uses their SUV like a truck, but still wants to be able to get from point A to point B in comfort and with some fun.

I do however miss the LITTLE things that my Maxima had..the Xterra has no drivers side vanity mirror, the passenger one doesn't have a light. I miss having a power/heated seat which is not an option on the Xterra. I miss the cass/cd combo and the light in my glove box that the Maxima offered. It also gets horrible gas mileage for an suv of this size.I am extremely disappointed with this vehicle especially since I have owned many Nissan vehicles in the past with good results. I will never buy another Nissan again after seeing how they treat loyal customers that do have problems. I would urge anyone to think twice before purchasing this vehicle!

Love this car!!!

The only complaint I have about this vehicle is the gas mileage... but I knew that going in. This SUV is great... I would recommend it to anyone looking for this size SUV.

I had my Xterra for about a week now, and I absolutely love it. Good on-road and great off-road hanlding. Some of us SUV buyers actually don't mind the "truck like" ride. Let the soccer moms drive the cute 'utes, but if you want a great looking vehicle, which is a blast to drive, this is the choice for you.

After doing much research in the mini to mid size SUV market I ended up with the Xterra for multiple reasons: For starters, it is a blast to drive, extremely versatile (Have carried a snowblower, several of my friends couches, pulled large boats and tent trailers and never got stuck in mud or snow), and extremely reliable. Apart form regular maintenance, I have yet to have any problems with it. The only down side would be it's thirst for fuel (Especially with the rising prices), but did not expect to get much better with much else out there that has it's versatility and capabilities.

No more Fords....

I love this truck....ended up tradeing an 02' Escape that had nothing but problems for this machine and I've never felt more liberated!!!! Getting an awesome deal for fully loaded SE @ $22,500 also made it even more sweeter. Outstanding feel, fit, finish, and looks. Gas is another issue, but well worth it for the reliability. Would recommend to everyone to check it out.

I bought my Canteen 4x2 Xterra with all options (fosgate stereo rocks!) without thinking that i would want 4wd or Supercharged. Buyers remorse settled in. i an thinking about selling mine and trading up. I am 16, so trust me, the X has great handling. i would have rolled half the other SUV's already, and the turning radius is amazing.

We looked at every mid-sized SUV on the market before deciding on the Xterra SE (loaded). My wife drives it daily (with two small children) and she could not be happier. Reviews said after the newness wore off people would not like it. WRONG!! We love the ride, the security, the quality, etc. We would recommend this to anyone looking for a practical SUV.

I've owned this Xterra about 8 months and have driven 17K miles to date. It constantly gets 16MPG no matter what type of driving I do. I recently drove to Florida (1,260 miles each way) It still got 16MPG. Of course I was going about 75MPH. Other than that it seems solid.

I upgraded to the XE supercharged and i love it. I had a 5 speed manula and that was really great in the snow. We just had the biggest snow storm in 7 years and i was out in 20 inches of snow. I got the yellow because it is flashy, and the supercharged is NOT a disapointment. The one thing i have noticed is that it does guzzle gas more than my older one did. As far as room, i have 2 great danes and they have plenty of room! I love this car and think ill keep getting them.

I am on my second Xterra (owned a 2000 first). Upgraded to the 2003 S/C. Had one factory suspension problem with the 2003 model and was given a new vehicle (very pleased with the way the situation was handled). Little disappointed with the sunroof, not usable with cargo net installed. I have become a devoted Xterra owner.

I love my X-terra. They only flaws are rediculous gas milage (they let you know before you buy it) and some cheap interior items such as the head rests are coming undone after a year. It is built to drive off road and can handle anything i put it through. I missed my old puck-up truck but with my family I needed to have the back seat. I got the best of both worlds with this Truck.

The Xterra is great, its like the design of a Lexus meets the versatility of a 4 Runner. Yet it is kinda small, it alows for a very fast, fun driving experence. I have the SE supercharged model, and let me tell you, I am never disapointed by the get-go power it has to offer. I live on a ranch and it has done good in traction and 4x4ing when it comes to the rainy season. The on the fly 4 wheel drive is a great addition when it comes to going up hill and not being able to stop to put your rig in gear.

This truck was my first car purchase. I have to say, I wanted to buy it for looks, but when I test drove it, I really fell in love. It drives wonderfully and doesn't have the "truck" feel that other SUV's tend to have. I absolutely love my truck and would recommend it to anyone who was looking for a reliable ride. The only bad thing I found about the truck is that how many times I must fill up the gas tank, though I would imagine any SUV or truck is this way. Overall: If I were to trade in my truck today, I would purchase another one, and I have had my truck for over one year.

I'm writing about my 3 year old SE. I bought it about a month after they came out in '99. Mine is a 2000, and I got all the B&W to hold resale value up. I LOVE this car! I've driven it everywhere my old CJ (Jeep that I drove for 14 years!) used to go, and it handles just as well. The on road ride is acceptable for a truck chassis. I've only ever had one minor problem with it, and that was a cable that was not connected to the A/C when I bought it. I get up to about 22MPG on the highway, about 17MPG around town. I _wish_ I had the Supercharged version for better takeoffs, but heck, it is a truck, and it's geared pretty low. I've recommended it to many folks.

Bought the XE-V6 4x2 Auto and have driven it for about 700 miles. So far no problems, and have loved driving it around town. Build quality is excellent, and I have no doubt that Nissan quality will provide me with a long lasting, enjoyable SUV. Exterior styling is eye pleasing, with its tough, aggresive hood giving it a "masculine" look to an otherwise cutesy vehicle class. Great features, fun to drive and plenty of safety features for an average family.

i have been waiting to buy one of these for about two years now. it was well worth the wait. it doesnt ride like a car but its not supposed too--its built for offroading. you can tell the difference in the engine (180hp vs. 170hp) especially with a k&n filter installed. i did not to get the sunroof- -its not useful in an xterra anyways-- but on the 2003's they have a cargo net in the ceiling in its place. great place to keep things you want to keep from sliding around. the turning radius is amazing. its as good as my civic--it feels that way anyways. overall its a great truck. i would recommend one to anyone.

Great looks and is fun to drive, But... TOTAL Gas pig 11-13mpg. Interior falls apart while you look at it. Door panels have fallen off twice, the carpet pills up into little fuzzy balls as you step on it. The micro thin seat padding condenses after short rides leaving your backside to bump metal. The sunroof tilts open about 2" in the back, but that's it - for all the extra bux why bother to pay for a veiw of a plastic basket! The AC system has to be on in 55 degree weather, 'cause the heating system pumps out hot moist air all the timne, even in the "cold" position. It's been in the shop 3 times already for stupid stuff. This thing is a mess.
