I bought my 2003 P5 new...have had for 10 years now. It has 287,000 miles! I plan to get as many miles as I possibly can out of her. It is a manual trans and I've kept the timing belt replaced at regular intervals and have only ever used synthetic oil. The thermostat quit once but was a very simple fix. The headlight have always been a headache. I used to would have to replace them seemingly constantly. I love driving this car and don't feel like I will ever like another car as much as I like this one...unless it was a suped up chevelle or something :) cheap car, cheap on gas & fun to drive.

I drove this car for three weeks. I loved it. Unfortunately a guy turned in front of me without looking. My car got totaled. This car saved my life. The paramedics could not believe how much the car was squished and not me. Besides the normal symptoms of a crash, I am way better than I should be. This is one amazing car in all aspects.

Automatic transmission died at 110,000 miles. This is pretty unacceptable for anyone looking for reliable transportation considering cars from most other makers don't have this problem. I baught this car used and did my research. I got it well taken care of and I continued regular maintenence(all fluids regularly changed including trans fluid) Changed timing belt and water pump etc. There were some minor repairs like the alternator and an intake hose too. But then the transmission started slipping and I took it to a mazda specialist. He said this was unfortunatly a common problem for these cars.

I have owned this car for 10 years now and it has been nothing but good to me. I always took it to the dealership so anything related to maintenance and the few recalls were taken care of properly. I put a few modifications on it early on (Injen CAI, Racing Beat Catback Exhaust, Short Shifter) and have enjoyed even better performance and fun driving. Granted, this car is not going to win any drag races, but it is has decent pep and loves corners! Very reliable- never had anything beyond regular wear and tear in 10 years.

I purchased my 2003 Mazda Protege5 in 10/2002 and have been glad every day since! I have had the clutch replaced in the past 2 years along with the compressor and the catalytic converter and the drivers side widow thingy. I feel like after 7 years, this is normal. The head-light bulbs have been a bit of a nuisance, having to replace frequently, but being able to replace them myself, i'm just out the cost of the bulb, which isn't much. If you know the car has had regular maintenance, it will not let you down.

Absolutely Love It.

I work at a car rental company at an airport, so I drive brand new 2011-2012 cars all day long. This car is on par with these brand new cars, in my opinion. Everything about it is wonderful. The features, the handling, the styling, the utility, the mileage!. It's by far my favorite car to drive out of all I have driven!

I bought my 03 P5 in June of 05 with about 36,000. At 60 ish the head gaskets blew...which was an expensive fix. Other than that it's been regular maintenance which is begining to become quite frequent. My one major complaint is the tires are expensive and hard to find. Oh- And my other major complaint is two of the rear seat belts are broken and are very expensive to fix. My car has 134,000...and i'm in the process of researching and buying a new one.

I bought Stella, my 2003 Mazda Protege5, about 14 months ago. It had 95,000 miles on it and now has 105,000. I was previously driving an old beat up Honda. It was a night and day difference between the two. It looks beautiful and new. Interior is great. Bad placement on the cupholders, only bad part of the interior. It is a fun, zippy quick car with great gas mileage. Stock tires drive terribly in any kind of snow, if you buy snow tires like I did its does amazing in snow, but stock tires are awful in snow. Cupholders and tires are only complaints. I absolutely love everything else about my amazingly fun to drive protege5.

Me and my girlfriend have been driving this car 166 000 km (100 000 miles), since 2003. The car is great fun to drive, very reliable and comfortable for long road trips (many 6 hrs + trips in the bag). Other than standard maintenance, we've had few repairs on this car. Good fuel consumption for a sporty performance. Nothing bad to say about this car !

I bought my Protege 5 in January 2004 for $13,900 due to it's being replaced by the Mazda 3. I'm on my 7th year and it has been a great car! I have 160,000 miles and I've had few issues. At 120,000 miles it started running rough and I found that the hose connecting the airbox to the intake was cracked. It cost about $90. At 100,000 miles I replaced the timing belt, belts, hoses, water pump for about $1000 through the dealer. Other than that it has been basic maintenance and has been very reliable. It now needs new struts, but otherwise works fine. I hope to get a few more years out of it.

I have owned many cars. None have performed like my Protege5. It is fun; it is roomy; and it has never needed any significant work. I take long trips with it. I use it for weekend ski trips, kayak trips, canoe trips, camping, and every day to and from work. At 90,000 miles, I paid about $1000 to have a total overhaul including new timing belt/chain. Other than that, I've never done anything more than routine oil changes. I don't think the newer Mazda 3 is this good. In fact, it's about $5k more (I bought my protege5 for $14,999) and not as good quality and not as fun. I'm a lucky man! Oh, the cd stopped working, so I have an aftermarket Sony stereo. Everything else is stock.

I cannot say anything bad about this car. bought with 9000 and have changed brakes this year. Engine, Transmission, clutch etc. are all working strong. Perfect car for anyone. ONLY defects are headlight bulb = $25, air filter hose = $90. Other than that car is completely perfect.

Bought my P5 brand new, and couldn't be happier with it 7 years later. No one can believe it has 178,000 miles on it, it still looks and runs great. Haven't had to do anything to it other than maintenance. Average 34 MPG during summer, 30 in the winter on my mostly highway commute. Road noise louder than avg, but nothing you don't get used to. Have to pay a little extra for tires, but that's more than made up for with what I save in gas and repairs. Great Car.

Don't know what to do.

I got this car new with 0 miles on it and when I bought it after a test drive it had 53. Great car at 1st but then tons of issues. Now at 120,000 miles I am having the car miss when driving and it idles rough at times. One day it has issues then the next day it runs fine. I already had it in the shop 5 times and at two different places and they keep putting parts in and the next week same issue. I suggest to watch before you buy. Car is fast and a sweet ride but not worth the buck since it will cost you tons of money and the tires are hard to find and $$. Plus the trade in value is very low.

Ever since I was a kid I always wanted a Mazda for the cool little catch phrase in the commercial "Zoom-Zoom" It wasn't until last year that a station wagon could really have the power to go like this one does, there is a huge stabilizer bar under the hood so I can take incredible turns. I am so satisfied with this car, however because they are discontinued I am not sure if I would like to buy another Mazda, I am considering the new 6 but we will see in time. Mine is a 5-speed Manual and I have the issue with cup holders, they are in a REALLY bad place you hit them all the time and I cut my finger open the other day on a cup. All I can say is ZOOM-ZOOM.

I bought my car new and loved it for 45,000 miles. Had a screw come loose from the intake and go through the engine prior to a recall for that very thing. Fixed the misfire, but started having black/blue smoke issues and had to replaced smashed plug. Whitten Bros. "did" the recall work and claimed no problems, yet when I had to rebuild the engine 1 year later due to smoke, discovered in fact that one of the screws they'd "checked and replaced" had indeed gone through my engine, pitted pistons, destroyed catalytic, fouled engine. Runs great again now, but had to rebuild myself because Whitten Brothers wouldn't live up to what happened and didn't have money/trust for the stealership to fix.

Purchased my Protege5 in 2006 with 44500 miles on it, only issues I've had is a pesky ABS light. Aside from that Oil changes and a pair of brake pads. Great car from a reliability stand point, great mileage. Mazda had the right idea when they built this car should get 200000 miles easily.

Purchased my P5 brand new in July 2003. Put about 18k miles/yr in highway commuting. No harsh driving, always take it slow and steady. All maintenance performed as required. Everything was great up til 110k miles. The overdrive gear in the automatic transmission failed and I had to replace the AT ($3000). I've had other Mazdas/Toyotas and nothing like this has ever happened (and shouldn't happen with only 110k mi). I'm not sure this is an isolated issue or systemic. Anyway, I really like this car, but reliability is in question. Probably my last Mazda.

I bought this car in 2008 looking for a sporty hatchback on the cheap. At the time there wasn't much in the offering, unlike today where it seems like hatchbacks have caught on again. It's a great car for most occasions with plenty of "get-up", lots of room with the seats down, and a great exterior (imho). Unfortunately it's not without its problems: anything exhaust related (EGR valve for instance, the fact that it has TWO cat. converters that like to fail!) and of course the headlights, as most other reviewers have mentioned. All in all it's a fun car, but if I had to do it again I might have spent a little more money and gone for a Mazda3.

Have owned my car for 7 years and still love it. I have a manual transmission and this car is fun to drive and feels/looks sporty. Roomy for four of us and luggage. Still gets great mileage. Hard to find tires for it that aren't expensive and not the greatest in the snow, but those are my only complaints. I get tons of compliments on it as well.

Bought my P5 brand new and loved it up til now. At 110k miles the overdrive gear went out now I have to buy a new transmission. All maint done like clockwork, drive like an old lady, so I don't get it. Mazda reliability has always been good. Most say I must have got a bad transmission or early mechanical failure due to wear. I do put about 18k miles/yr commuting, but geez, this is not acceptable. Toyota 4wd truck w/ 140k and NO problems!

I use Mobil 1 and stay on top of the maintenance. Fun to Drive but you need to keep the tires aligned and rotated or they will be worn in a year.

I had issues with this car from the moment I purchased it. My wife and I downgraded to 'save money' given the economic environment. We bought it in late 2008 with about 68000 miles on it, figuring it shouldn't give us any trouble for a few years. Well, I had put about $500 into it up until August of 2009 which I wasn't happy about. Then in August, the engine went out costing me $3500 for a used motor. Needless to say, I am less than satisfied and will never buy a Mazda again. The Mazda I owned before this one needed a new transmission at 30000 miles. Ridiculous.

We bought the P5 new for my wife. She drove a '94 Miata daily for years so this Mazda was a no-brainer. Still have the Miata. This is the most reliable car I have ever owned including 3 Hondas, except for maybe the Miata. The only items that have failed and needed replacement are the O2 sensor, starting battery, and a window regulator. I do all maintenance myself - which is minimal. I've put synthetic oil in since the first oil change. At over 100k miles the brakes still have 40% life and the clutch is still strong. It doesn't need new shocks/struts either. We typically get 32-34mpg on the highway. It is starting to use some oil - but we've had it for 7 years!

I bought my Mazda brand new in 2003. Today it has 160,000 miles on it and it is still going strong. It has a few minor mechanical problems but that is caused by just normal wear and tear. This is hands down the most reliable car I have ever owned. The styling is outstanding and it is super fun to drive. I would not hesitate in replacing it with another Mazda. The only drawbacks are where the cup holders are situated. I have a 5- speed and when you are in first or third gear, I continually hit the cups in the holder and sometimes I have to move them to get the car into gear. I do wish it had an inside hatch release, but other than these small things I have no complaints.

I bought this car last year at a dealer. The first thing that grabbed my attention was the body design, and i still love it. i think the new Mazda3 is a little too bubbly, when they designed this thing they weren't afraid to add a few edges! Fun to drive, has some of that "zoom-zoom" at lower speeds. unfortunately, the little 4-banger does have to try a bit to get up steep hills, and it is very sluggish when four friends are packed inside. Oil filter is kind of a pain to get to. This baby does have a good clutch though. catches in the exact same place every time. I kind of wish it was RWD, but that's wishful thinking. it's as close as you can get to having a miata that you can haul people in

If you are looking for a good used car, P5 should be on the list if you can find one with low miles. I bought mine a year ago moving up, yes up, from Explorer. P5 was on my short list of cars as one of few small Wagons. The first day, I took it down twisty, country road and finally remember what I was missing out on. P5 is well designed inside, seats are comfy, all the switches, knobs and gauges are in the right places, and has the right gadgets too. Engine with 130HP is not too peppy but manages to get by, especially when kept above 3K rpms. It is very reliable engine. I have the autostick tranny which was ‘03s addition over ’02 model. Smooth shifts when not under power in auto mode.

Just as I imagined the adrenaline raced through my veins as I drove it for the first time.. So I am addicted. I am IN LOVE with this car and from the reviews I have read that will not change anytime soon! So far so good.

There are a lot of stuff I can add to it to make it look better and have more fun with it. Very good car with not many problems. Have driven 16 hours straight with it about 5 times with no problems. I have had my P5 for about 50,000 miles. I installed a B&M short shifter which greatly increased performance and keeps the RPM up between gears. I have had no problems with the car in the year and a half I have had it. The only changes I made were to increase air flow to the engine by putting in a K&N drop in filter and cutting out the bottom of the air box which improved mileage by 1.5 mpg and bumped up the power by about 4 or 5 hp if you believe Import Tuner Magazine. I also changed to Lucas brand synthetic oil and gear lube. I put a hyperground system in as well, which does seem to assist acceleration and smooth out the idle to about 700rpm.

I have 110K on my car, bought it new and do the req. maint. on time. Only ever had two complaints about this car. The first was the original tires that came with it... TERRIBLE. They were Dunlop tires and 2 of the tires developed bulges in the side walls. They also had terrible traction, especially in the rain. The other is gas mileage. For a small car, with a 2.0L engine (5 speed manual trans.) the best it can do on the highway is 32-35. I had a Honda Civic (5 spd.) that routinely got 40-45 and a Dodge Stratus (5 spd too) that got between 35-40 hwy. Otherwise, I LOVE this car. I drive it everyday. It's reliable, comfortable and fun to drive; handles great with the new Kumho tires

You know, I absolutely loved this car up until about 5k mile ago. I love everything about this car except for the poor design/build quality of the engine and wheel bearings. Had to replace right front wheel bearing at just under 60k, and now the engine is going out on it. My Mazda dealer says its either a wrist pin or rod bearing crapping out at ONLY 64,XXX miles. Other than that, this car would be absolutely perfect! If you plan on buying one of these beauties, be cautious and buy the extended service plan! Better safe than sorry

I bought this car in March of 2003, as of today I have approx. 115,000 miles. I've gone through three sets of tires, new brakes and rotors, new radiator, timing belt, and one tranny flush. This car is awesome. Before this car, I owned the Mazda 626, so I was already hooked on Mazdas. The first year and a half, I would always take my car to the dealership to be serviced, but the cost got so high, I started doing all of the easy maintenance myself. That kept the cost of owning this car really low! All in all this car has held up and I love it till this day!

I LOVE MY MAZDA PROTEGE 5!

I bought my car brand spanking new on November 12, 2003. I looked at the car without even test driving it and bought it. The color is what reeled me in! It is now August 2008 and I have not had ONE SINGLE PROBLEM out of my car. The only parts that I've replaced on my car are the front headlight bulbs and the tires! Still as the original brakes, clutch, transmission, radiator, etc. It's so much fun to drive and I have absolutely no problems making quick maneuvers in and out of traffic. This is my second Mazda and I'm a customer for life!

If you want some fun on a budget try prying one of these away from some one. This is my sixth Mazda (including a '91 Miata) so you may sense a bias. However this car is so easy to drive enthusiastically, my only regret is that I can't drop the top! Corners flat, easy to drive in city traffic. Peppy without the AC going, OK with. Cruises happily at 75 plus, no problem. Fuel consumption is about 30, but can be stretched to 34 with a lighter foot. Still no rattles or squeaks. At 50,000, feels like it's just breaking in. No defects, one minor factory recall. My wife likes to sneak away with it once in a while. What else can I say? Find a good one used and drive it 'til it drops (200,000+)

Not reliable or maybe not lucky!!!

I bought the car 4 years ago. Recently, the engine started making a loud sound and it seems that it may cost me over $1200 to repair it (with only 86,000 miles on the engine). I was hoping to keep the car longer. At this level not sure if I'm willing to spend that much money on a car that's only 4 years old. What would happen in few months if I fix the car! Would it brake again! This is a major maintenance for a car this new. So I would have to say that Mazda Protege5 is not a reliable car or I'm an unlucky guy! I hope my comments helped.

I now have 85k on this car. I change the oil every 3-5k miles and change the antifreeze and air filter at the recommended intervals. That's it. Changed the brakes (pads only) at 60,000 miles. That's right, original rotors. I had to change my last GM's at 20k because they warped (under-designed). Kuhmo tires only cost $68 and I put 50k+ on my last set vs the original tires without much change in performance or ride quality. This is a great car and the 28-30 mpg couple with low maintenance costs makes it very economical. And oh yeah... it's fun. Nimble and sporty.

I purchased this car used with about 50,000 miles on it. After 2 years and 25,000 more miles, I had absolutely no issues with this car. I couldn't have asked for more for the money that I spent. Leather seats, in-dash CD changer, sunroof... even the stereo system was good. To top it off I averaged around 30 MPG with mixed driving (I thought it would do better but couldn't complain). Unfortunately, I was just rear-ended and the car was totaled. I am seriously considering buying another Mazda as I was very happy with this car.

This car was bought new in July '03 and I have only put 37k on it. The biggest problem I have with it is that it handles so well, and is so confidence inspiring that you will burn through a set of tires in no time! Though the Mazda3 is bigger, more powerful, better handling, and more refined, the newer 3 seems to have lost some of the MP5's spunky character. This is a car that begs to be thrown into corners - one of the more engaging drives this side of a BMW 3 series. I am 6'7" and my wife is 5'; we can both get comfortable in this car - this one doesn't have a sunroof, which cuts in on headroom a bit.

Thing is it's so fun to drive and gets such good gas mileage and is so nimble in traffic and did I mention fun to drive and looks sport that I have yet to hand the keys over to him some 8 months later. He can drive the minivan! Seriously, this is a great car that handles and performs extremely well for a car its size and compared to many other cars. It has great leg room for my 6'4" frame and is peppy enough to keep you out of trouble.

Having a blast with my MP5 since I bought it early in the summer. Incredible handling has been the best part of the experience so far. My only grumbles are poor fuel economy at highway speeds, not enough vroom, and a lot of suspension shudder when hitting bumps while cornering hard.

I've owned 6 Mazdas (2 626s, 2 MPVs, Millenia, and this Protege) this is the most fun to drive so far. I loved my Millenia, but I missed having a 5-speed, so I traded it in on the Protege. This car, like all Mazdas, has been very reliable. It is fun to drive and it handles very well. I've had 2 other verisons of the 2.0L engine. It is an excellent engine and the one in this Protege is the most powerful so far. My son has the same engine in his Ford Escort. It's no match for the power mine produces.

Excellent mileage average 30 mixed. 73,000 miles and runs/looks exactly as brand new. Complaints include very noisy driving conditions. Engine revs very high, 5 speed needs to be upshifted very quickly to gain speed Car will not win many races. Not the most quiet, compliant ride but again this is a compact car.

I've had my Mazda Protege 5 for about 3 1/2 years and I absolutely love it. In the beginning I was a bit wary of the fact that it was a wagon rather than a four door, but I had to get it since it was more practical. I love the leather seats. The sound system is amazing, however I change my stereo deck to an Alpine which made the bass a 100 times better. The styling is amazing; one of a kind. Handling is excellent, the aceleration is not too bad for a four cylinder. I especially love the 4 speed tiptronic, which allows you to rev beyond the 6,500 rpm. I wouldn't suggest it, but I've taken it up to 7,000 rpm. Nothing is wrong. It's extremely reliable and no problems whatsoever.

I have not had to do anything beyond routine maintenance yet to this vehicle. I love this car and plan on keeping it for an extended period of time. I average around 27-29 mpg. I have the 5 speed and notice that it is not as easy to shift in the morning when it is cold. That's to be expected when you have moving gears. I just did my 60,000 mile check up and needed a new timing belt & battery but my car had been mostly in hot weather. I love this car and will own it until it can't be driven anymore.

This is by far the most fun vehicle I have owned. Looks cool and handles awesome. I bought new and planned on owning it a long time. I properly maintained this vehicle from day one. At around 20K my MP5 started having problems. Squeaks from the front and rear suspension over bumps. The rear noise was fixed, but after multiple visits the front was never fixed. During warm weather, the vehicle smells strongly of coolant. The radiator was replaced, but it still smells of coolant. The auto-transmission leaks -- multiple visits, multiple attempts to fix, still leaks on my floor! Worst of all, the car intermittently would die after pulling away from a stop. Looked at many times. Never fixed.

This is probably the 5th car I've owned over the years (I tend to keep them for 8 years or so), the 2nd Mazda, and my favorite. It's fun to drive, gets reasonably good mileage, and turns and parks easily. I've not had any issues with it, my only gripe being that it came with high-performance tires that cost major dollars to replace. But since that's the only money besides regular maintenance that I've had to shell out on it, I guess I can't complain too much. :)

I bought this car used, going from a 2002 Dodge Stratus R/T coupe V6 and I may be a Mazda customer for life now. This car is zoom. I find myself saying that as I do multiple lane changes on the highway. It is my go-cart, but comfortable and with lots of storage. Enough to keep my golden retrievers in the back along with all his fur. Just drove the car 480 miles yesterday and got 33 mpg. Very comfortable seats (back is not stiff at all), great pickup with the manual transmission. Roof rack, sunroof and 6 disk changer are great! Brakes are smooth as silk with the 4 disks. I highly recommend getting one. I feel like I pulled one over on the dealer!

This is truly a SPORT wagon - handling is truly out of its league and inspires confidence in any driving condition. Throwing it around turns and on-ramps brings a smile to my face every time. Exterior design is fantastic. The fit and finish feels more European with tightly sealing doors, good interior plastics and only 1 rattle - license plate holder (thick insulation tape fixed that). Stereo is more than adequate for a stock system. The fan selector switch malfunctioned but was replaced promptly under warranty. Front fog lights do an excellent job of lighting your way and give the car a rally-like appearance. For the money, the P5 is unrivaled in every way!

Exterior fit & finish is terrific while the interior materials are comparable to those found in more expensive cars. The car feels tight & solid. Layout of all instruments is very intuitive. Red illuminated instrumentation is easy to read and looks sporty too. I absolutely love this car & find it to be superior to many of the small & midsize cars that GM currently manufactures (I am a former 15-year GM employee). This is not sour grapes, just the truth. Great engineering & content planning by the Mazda team!

I bought my Protege5 to replace my first car (a 94 Grand Am). I looked at used and new cars all over NJ, but when I saw this dark blue baby sitting in the back lot I fell in love. My Protege5 is basic with only floor mats and wheel locks added. I love the 5 speed tranny, but I sometimes wish I had 6 to row, and the buzzy 2.0L is lack luster after about 70mph (and 3500rpm in 5th). The rear eats up just about everything and my 6ft-something friend can sit in the back (short trips only) with little complaint. The radio and HVAC controls are VERY easy to use.

This car suits my needs perfectly. Has the cleanest running engine. The oil is clean every time I check it. Great gas mileage! Highest was 37 mpg on a long trip. Lowest was 27mpg. I get around 30 normally. Great gas mileage means less muscle which is the better trade off for me (2.0L). Because of this the manual version is the way to go. Sporty suspension and tight turning radius makes for great handling (better than my Eclipse). Handles well in snow. Interior spacing is perfect.

i bought my Protege5 used with 47,000 miles, and it's the most fun to drive car I've ever owned! It's a sports car in hatchback (it's a not station wagon) clothes. This car easily satisfies conflicting requirements. It has quick reflexes, goes, stops, and steers very well, and it's a blast to drive down a mountain road. It also has plenty of room for cargo, and can seat 4 medium sized adults comfortably. I only wish it had a better sounding stereo and about 30 or 40 more hp. I get great gas mileage, better than the 25 city 31 hwy rating. I average at least 30 mpg doing about 80% city driving. I would recommend this car to anyone who wants a sports car but needs the interior space of a hatchback.

I purchased this car new in August 2003 and am now approaching 38K miles. It has the 5 speed manual transmission and no other options. I wanted a daily driver that was fun and very reliable. The car has exceeded my expectations in all areas. I have had *no* unscheduled maintenance, repair, or warranty problems of any kind. Mileage has been 30mpg (75% freeway, 25% city). And the car has been great fun to drive. It has nimble, precise handling and a taut but not harsh suspension. The engine is peppy, but more than 130 h.p. would have been even better. The lack of a limited slip differential is the only shortcoming that frequently detracts from the daily driving experience.

They only made this car for 2 years, which is a shame. It's been replaced by the Mazda 3, which is supposedly more refined, better performing, etc .- but they probably didn't need to. Although not blazingly fast, it's still "peppy" off the line, and a great deal of fun to drive in almost any situation. Easily hold 4 people in comfort, has an easily attachable roof rack (if yours doesn't already have it) for bikes, ski's, etc, and folding down the back seats allow for tons of stuff to be carried. It's definitely sport oriented, so luxury style comfort drivers might not enjoy it as much. For cheap fun, it can't be beat. Car & Driver thinks so too.

This little car has never failed me. It's as reliable as a Swiss watch. It's the perfect car for "running around in town and to work every day". Living in Miami I use the A/C 11 months out of the year. My traffic commute is in stop & go traffic and I average about 24 - 25 miles per gallon. Folding the back seat forward provides all the space two people need to load luggage for a 14 night cruise. Sustained highway speeds running above 70 mph is not what the car was designed for. I suspect I'll be replacing the original tires at 30,000 miles. This size is an expensive replacement. I change my oil every 3,000 miles. My Bentley is painted silver and looks fantastic!

This is a great, reliable car with snappy handling. I average about 28 mpg here in Philly driving 50/50 city/highway. I'm at 35K with no maintenance issues so far. Still on the original Dunlop tires. Won't go for the Dunlop's as a replacement. The tires are an odd size and only a few companies make an exact all-season match. Switching to a 205 profile seems a good compromise although mileage will drop a little bit.

I love my Pro 5. The only aspect I would change is the headroom. I am 6' tall and I like to keep the seat bottom a little higher for better visibility. Mine has a sunroof, which decreases the headroom a bit, so I'm right at the roof. Of course, I wouldn't mind a little more HP and better gas mileage, but I think it is a good balance. I've found the interior transporting capacity to be surprisingly large with the back seats folded all the way down. The seats aren't the most comfortable, but the leather feels good and has been durable so far. The ride is a little firm, but with the low profile tires, this helps offset the smallish HP when turning and maneuvering.

This car is the RX-8 of wagons. The car handles like a dream but is lacking in the horsepower/torque area (just like the RX-8). Had the car for a month and has been in the shop 3 times already. Everything that went wrong got fixed under warranty and now i will put the car to the test to see how reliable a Mazda really is. I have never owned a Mazda (I am a Nissan lover; had 3 and never had trouble). Purchased car because I got a great deal on it and the Protege has been ranked as one of the best entry level cars. Hope the car holds up like my Nissans.

This car's a lot of bang for the buck. I put 52,000 miles on it in 24 months. No reliability issues. I got the car loaded: leather, ABS, sunroof, 6 CD in-dash, sub woofer, chrome wheels, side airbags, roof rack, automatic transmission, auto dimming mirror, etc. The price was still only $19,100. The car handles great, is fun to drive and can carry an amazing amount of stuff. My only complaint is that it's a bit underpowered. The acceleration isn't great. It could use another 30 horsepower. I had been planning to spend $30,000 on a new car, but after test driving cars in that price range, they weren't nearly as fun to drive as this. My last Protege got 170,000 miles w/ no problems!

I bought this car new in Dec. 2003 and it was the first new car purchase I have ever made. I loved the outside appearance and the five-door hatch design. I picked one that has about every option except the leather. With all the options there is little left to be desired when inside. Larger passengers have complained about not having enough room and four adults are a little cramped. Overall this is a very nice car for what I purchased it for. The fuel economy has never been all that great and the chrome wheels don't look great after two winters. The suspension is strictly for smooth roads. CD changer gets stuck occasionally. Heater is slow to warm up. Tires expensive to replace.

I have had this car for over a year. Bought it brand new in Sept. 2003 and have over 34000 miles. This car is absolutely great as a commute car. It is great on gas, easy to park and can hold a lot of stuff. I bought this car in Florida on my way to Texas for job relocation. I turned in a minivan packed with items. Everything fit in the Protege5 when I put the back seats down. I have never had a problem with it. The Bose sound system is great. The seats are comfortable. The inside details do look a little cheap but then again this is a cheap car. With a 4 year warrant, you can't go wrong. I will buy another Mazda.

Bought the car in 2003 as a new vehicle. Was good until 10000 miles, when a fuse blew that shorted out the tail lights, dash lights and lights on and door open chimes. Fuse was replaced and blew within a few weeks. Now the fuse blows as soon as the car is turned on. The car has been in the dealership for a week now, and they are stumped. Nobody seems to be able to determine the problem, but we have no car for my daughter to drive (unless she drives without tail lights). Mazda corporate didn't know anything about this problem, so it may be just a lemon, but buyer beware of the electrical problems with this car.

I was supposed to own a 2004 Mazda3 s 5-door but the dealership ripped me off and landed to this car. This car is mediocre in every way and dissapointing at limit. The stock tires doesn't grip submitting the car to plow on each corner. Engine power is smooth not fast and torque-less, thrashy at limit. At least every time my friends seat on the front passenger seat they end up taking a nap which is good, that means that the seats are very comfy. The steering and engine response are very responsive (although the steering has a slow feed back.

Too bad they stopped making them.

I have had my Protege5 since 1-9-04, and love it. I originally went to the Mazda dealer to test drive a Mazda 3 5 door, to replace my 03 Ranger that was stolen. After test driving the Mazda 3, I decided to try the only P5 they had left that was a manual tranny. I feel in love with it and purchsed it right away. I currently have 14,900 miles on it in less than 4 months with no problems what so ever.

I was looking for a go kart and found one in the Protege5. The engine is not the most refined, the most efficient or even very powerful for that matter, but it gets the job done. The car is just fantastic for the cut and thrust of a daily city or suburban commute, particularly with the manual transmission. Don't bother with the automatic or "tiptronic" on this car.

I've had this car for over a year, and it's been great. I haven't driven that many total miles (<10k), but it's been rock-solid. Not one problem. Unlike Mazda3 (Ford), Protege5 is made 100% in Japan, and it shows. Quality is so far beyond anything made in America- even at much higher prices. I find the Dunlops are adequate, as long as you drive with care in inclement weather. In dry, trust me, they're like glue. EXTREMELY fun to drive! Not that fast, true, but since the revs are high most of the time, you almiost always have a decent amount of power on tap. Ride is firm, but never harsh.

I wanted the Mazda6, but the wife needed to replace her van. Primarily we wanted a vehicle the kids could fit in and would get good gas mileage. We didn't want to loose confort and quality, by going budget. This car gives you the options and quality of a more expensive car with the smaller size and economy of a much cheaper car. Hopefully this car will last as long as my 93' 626, still kicking and reliable at 130k miles.

This is my second car, and I have to admit, the frills drew me in. I LOVE the handling, the enterior and exterior styling, and the amount of power you feel behind the wheel...BUT...for such a little car, it takes up a lot of gas!!! You also have to be careful who/what you are carrying around with you, b/c I notice a substantial lowering in mpg when I'm driving around friends or furniture (which is pretty often, seeing as I am a college student). On the whole, though, if the car proves to be reliable, I will be VERY satisfied with it! :)

My wife chose this above other more expensive cars, and has had no regrets in the year we've owned it. Only work needed has been normal scheduled maintenance (and tires, see suggested improvements). Although this is our fourth Mazda, it was actually purchased to replace a Honda that didn't fit between the moving vehicle behind it and the stationary one ahead of it. After 20K miles no major complaints and we're just as happy with it as we were with the Honda before it was compressed.

This car is so fun. It seems so perfectly designed between form and function and economy. It is the funnest car you can find to drive. Unreal response and pepness. The seats are really comfortable and the interior is laid out perfectly. The 4 cylinder motor has plenty of power and the car has excellent pickup throughout the power band. The 2003 drops the luggage rack and adds a 100watt subwoofer that mounts on the spare tire! The stereo is awsome for a stock system! I say again that this car is one of the coolest cars made today!

I don't care if I evet buy another car. Car dealers drive me nuts!! That being said my wife and I instantly fell in love with the P5 from the moment we drove it. Overall,it's a fun car with plenty of room for us. I would've loved a Mazada3 but budgets are budgets right :( This is our second car. I own a 2002 civic sedan which I love and my wife drives the P5. I love driving the P5 around town on the weekend but getting back into my honda for the weekly commute is like coming back to an old friend. There are things that bother me about it. The first thing that I notice is the extremely loose unresponsive steering. I would love to see the Mazda speed steering and suspension standard in their upcoming Mazda 3s. The second annoyance is the jumpy clutch which happens mainly when the cars is cold. Again, would love to see the mazda speed clutch standard in the upcoming 3s. The 3rd flaw is the cheep back seat cushions that never want to fit right after removing them. The 4th flaw might be the loud engine which in my opion is due to the thin firewall and probably wide gapped valves. Other than that, it works for me. -GJ

Since I have only 3000 mileson this new Mazda Protege5, I can't comment on overall reliability.I can give a basic review. Handling is good for a car in this class. Fun. Exterior design is top notch, and FAR superior to its peers like the Toyota Matrix. Interior is nice with decent quality of materials, and with a great sound system, easily besting its competition. Some weak elements are the front strut tower brace that I can bend. The only real gripe I have is that is certainly does NOT deliver "zoom zoom". It's 130 HP motor is a pathetic performer that does not rev willingly to its peak at 6k rpm. I should have got the 3 model that just released.

I absolutely love the looks of this car and how it drives in anything but the snow. It is horrible in snow and slush. The tires are expensive as all heck! Why put a tire on a lower priced vehicle that costs like $162 a tire to replace? I am very disappointed in this car right now and unfortunately I am more than likely going to trade it in and loose my butt on the trade. I just can't stand the idea of spending that kind of money on tires that who knows if they will actually make the car go any better or not????? I would definitely NOT recommend this vehicle to anyone!

Phenomenal car, quick, nimble, fun to drive, excellent gas mileage, roomy. It's only fault is being a tad underpowered...but you can't have everything!!! I normally buy a new car every year. Prior to the MP5 I had a Firebird Formula, a Trans Am WS6 and a Ford Lightning. I bought the MP5 as a temporary vehicle because I had a long drive to work (which I don't anymore). After a year and more than 18000 miles, it's going to be around for quite awhile longer!!!

I really enjoy driving my protege5.I opted for the standard trans. and the acceleration seems adequate. The car seems to really hug the road in turns. I looked at a lot of cars and this one has the best visbility especially when backing up. When comparing the toyota matrix and the ford focus wagon the protege wins hands down. You get 17in mag. wheels with 4 wheel disc brakes standard on the mazda, costs extra on the toy and ford. The price was much better on the Mazda. If you are looking for a stylish car at a reasonable price check out the protege5

I compared two cars during my look for a new car: the Mazda Protege 5 and a Volvo 40. One test drive in each car enabled me to reach one conclusion, that there was no comparison between the two. The Volvo's turbo whined consistently and it's wheels were unbalanced, whereas, the P5 had far better visibility in any direction and was more design appealing inside and out and more user-friendly in all aspects. One look was all it took, and judging from over two years of driving with few complaints, I believe I made the right decision.

The MP5 handles like a dream, it looks great no matter what angle you look at it from, it comes really well equipped, and its just plain sexy. Mine has been confused for a Lexus IS 300 sportcross (3 times) and a BMW 5 series wagon (once). That says a lot about my car. Check out Protege5.com for more info

Great looking and very fun to drive. The engine is powerful enough to be fun with the manual but not so powerful that it's easy to get into trouble. Steering and handling are outstanding. The interior looks much nicer with leather. It's roomy for such a small car--I currently have three child seats in the back. Engine a bit rough and noise levels are relatively high at highway speeds. Ride can be busy, but better than my test drive led me to expect. Overall, an amazing car considering how much I paid ($13,343 with ABS, leather, and sunroof).

Been looking at PR5s for right package (automatic, ABS/Side Impact Air, leather) for 3 months. Wanted silver, teenage girls wanted yellow, settled for red. Got $2.5k rebate, $1.5k Ford "S-Plan" discount and $1k dealer cash. Acted decisively as loaded PR5 tough to find. Am biased on Mazda since I own '95 Protege LX, '03 MPV ES, and this PR5. Owned '86 RX-7 GLX and '93 MPV. Kids love moonroof and I endorse wind deflector. Handled stiff like racing car til I lowered tire pressure from 45psi to 35 psi. Still handles well though. Engine is strong with only driver; okay when you have 4 kids too. Too soon to evaluate MPG, but guestimate it about 20 in city.

I bought in Nov 2002 and have driven my car on long hauls a lot... despite low-proifle tires it rides well, handles beautifully and only needs a good exhaust system to make it perfect! wish the gearshift action was tighter and had more power, but aside from that, no complaints at all! dealers do gouge a bit on oil changes, so I'm looking for a good mechanic instead

The initial quality was flawless. It has more interior room than any other car in it's price class. It handles likes your driving on rails due to the precise steering, tight suspension and 16 inch tires. The automatic/manual transmission makes it so fun to drive!! It can go from 40-70 mph faster than any small car we have ever driven. The road noise is far less than our Saturn SW2 and is more agile and the turning radius is incredible. The visibility is good because your not sitting on the floor boards like the Saturn. It also has a standard 48000 mile 5yr bumper to bumper warranty. We are VERY happy with our purchase!!

Don't know where to begin. I love the car as its a fun to drive compact wagon. However with all the problems involved with the car it is wearing out its welcome. Engine gets terrible fuel economy, shakes and vibrates like crazy, has no power, and the transmission is already in need of replacement (clutch chatter that of course the dealer can't recreate. Third gear grinds already and pops out of gear sometimes when you put it in there!?! Of course Dealer can't reproduce problem). Interior door fabric is already worn out and the paint chips like crazy on the front.

When I went looking for my first brand new car- I was expecting a lot from the car I chose. The only specific ideas I had were that I wanted a hatchback, but I also wanted four door. I wanted a sporty yet comfortable car that I could play in on the weekends and that would be reliable in any situation. It took me five months of research to find the car I eventually bought, and I must say it was worth the time and effort I put into finding my new car. I am more confident in my driving because of it. I love that the back seats lay down for extra cargo room, but it isn't a huge "soccer mom" car that most people picture when you say "wagon". I love my car!

I have had the car for less then 3 months and put 9000 miles on it. I had a V-6 Accord with several aftermarket parts before I bought the P5. The P5 will out-handle the Accord any day of the week. The car is much more stable cornering and gives you confidence entering any corner. The car is under powered, but not terribly slow. Not going to win any drags with this car. The 5-spd revs high and is enjoyable to drive. reat stereo and looks are additional compliments. I have owned Honda's for 10 years now and this was my first Mazda. I am a big fan of the company now and would recommend this over a Civic anyday. Give Mazda a shot - they won't let you down!!

I have this car about a year and a half and have put a little over 20,00 miles on it. We like snow sports and take long trips almost every weekend. It is comfortable for me and my 6'2" husband. With the seats down it is very roomy and the uneven split back seat lets you carry people and your skis, boards, etc. The standard options for this car include power windows/locks, a.c., and CD player. I find it very peppy (standard trans) and fun to drive. The interior has held together perfectly considering the use we give it. Gas mieage and acceleration are great for long trips.

Overall, I'm really suprised that I don't see more of these buggers out on the road, considering all the manufacturer's great incentives. The car seems overwhelming with it's perks, considering that I was driving a gas guzzling 4x4 pickup before.

Owning my pro5 has been a wonderfull experience. This car is the third Mazda I have owned, and the second Protege. As with the previouse two this has had virtually no issues or problems with the exception of a rattle that was taken care of at the dealer. It is as much fun to drive as the first generation RX7 I had in the past, and it has a much more people friendly rear seat than any other simmilar small wagon I compared it to. In a nut shell it always gets looks and makes me smile the minute I turn the key.

My wife and I fell in love for it. Awesome looks, like just unloaded from European upscale factory. Most handsome (or pretty) car in 15-30K segment. Drives like a dream, smooth transmission, sufficient power, rich feeling inside and out. Audi/VW would have priced this at 30K if it this rolled out of their factory. The body is tight and very well composed. Nigligible body roll and corners like you are locked to the road. I bought mine totally loaded. They are giving a great deal now as Mazda3 are coming soon, and they don't have this deal. Don't follow others and blindly pay your money on bland Civic/Corolla or even Martix.

Mazda has created a car with tight steering, good pickup (with the manual transmission) and a sporty appearance. However, check this list…roofrack loud road noise, new auxiliary fan, rusted rear brake caliper pin, new EGR valve, poor power window performance, new rotors needed at 18,000 miles, and A/C turning on without me pressing the A/C button. Gas Mileage is poorer than on the sticker and exterior paint and sturdiness is less than adequate. At 1 year, my trade value was $9K. I spent over $15K. It's a shame because the car is fun to drive and looks great but steer clear of Mazda.

I recently decided to replace my VW Golf TDI with Protege5. Allthough the diesel mileage was nice, I needed something more exciting but still affordable. Protege5 seams to be the right choice. Reliability should be excellent, it has all the equipment I was looking for, it is a lot of fun to drive and I got used to this car in one afternoon. handling and braking is excellent, better than almost any car in this class. Build quality is very good and price was surprisingly low for what you're getting. I added auto trans, ABS and side air bags to the basic configuration and paid 15K includung all taxes and fees!

Bought a 2003 MP5 a few weeks ago. Wanted to drive it a few weeks before writing a review. Mine's a fully loaded (leather, ABS, moon roof, roof rack, polished wheels, etc) manual. End of the year rebates allowed me to get it out the door for $15,250. I had driven a (very) old Mazda 323, so the is a huge step up. Test drove it based on looks, but bought it for the performance and interior styling. Having driven some other new cars, I can't say there's one nearly as nice, or performs as well, for the price.

I researched for a long time, we miss the availabity of the great Japanese wagons (Accord, Maxima, etc.). This car is peppy, handles great, looks very good although we have gotten some "clown car" comments and is very economical to drive. It's fairly practical as well, do not expect full size wagon accoutremnents but with no kids in the car and the seats down we have carried some fairly large loads. Interior is slightly small otherwise this has been a great car for us, two adults with two small children.

I have owned this car for 2 weeks now and love it. I did some research on this particular vehicle and found that it was an excellent car. I checked out consumer reports online and found that other owners thought this was an excellent vehicle also. It was rated very high. I would recommend this car to anyone with or without children. I bought this vehicle for a second car and have only been driving it around town so fuel economy for me hasn't been that great, but driving around town won't get you that great mileage anyway. I really got a great deal on it also which is always a plus! I will be back to rate it again after I get some more mileage on it.

A fun sporty little car( 5 speed manual trans.) that is also economical. There is enough room up front for me (6'2" 210), head and leg room are no problem. The back seats two adults comfortably. Very good value /quality for the money.

A great fun to drive car. Plenty of sports car characteristics, with additional cargo space, I'm not buying groceries for a house of 4, so the cargo area is just fine.

A great car for the young family.

I can't believe this is in the wagon catagory, it handles more like a German/Italian hatchback..Turn the wheel and that is exactly where it goes. Acceleration is "peppy" not neck-breaking, but the gas milage is well worth the loss of "jack rabbit starts and the styling is superb

Sporty design but not overdone. Good value even with the base model with features essential for safety, handling, comfort and space.Competitive pricing and factory incentives makes a great buy. A great choice for those who wants the space and convenience of a hatchback but not as big as the traditional wagon.

This car is a great everyday commuter car but is not ideal if you're planning on taking a long distance trip. I took a 3 hr trip once and my back started to hurt about 2 hrs into the trip. There are some improvements that can be done to the engine and overall stability of the vehicle. Good interior design but can use some work on between door panel and front dashboard.

I bought mine two weeks ago and waited to drive it a little bit before putting the review... I love the car: it's good looking, handles well, and cheap! I have all the amenities you might want in a car (fully loaded). It's a great time to buy it since the 2004 model comes soon. I got it at $450 below invoice (thanks to reading the advice of edmunds.com)! It's not a power beast, but I was surprised to be at 95mph and be relax and feel safe. Also the braking system is great, which was one of the most important points for me.

After exhaustive shopping on features and performance, we bought the Protege5, and it is a great little car - compare to the Matrix base - same HP, but the 130 on the Protege is a lot snappier despite the numbers, 4 wheel disks, and 16 inch wheels. I got this car for more than $4000 less than the Toyota dealer offered me on the Matrix! (including $2200 rebate from Mazda, but who cares WHY it is cheaper). Let's not even go into the ridiculous prices on the Subaru's. You can't touch this much car for that kind of money anywhere else!

This is my first Mazda and I have been pleasantly surprised with my driving experience.I wanted a car that was both a workhorse and a stylish eye-catcher. The Protege5 wears both hats really well. People tend to give me that envious look at stoplights. The P5 has the appearance of a more expensive crossover yet it is economical and eco- conscious. It has some excellent features including a well-designed cabin that offers excellent driving vision; a well-designed keyless entry and alarm system--much better than most. I am totally won over by this car and the P5 has been a great driving experience for the past 4-months.

The first few things I noticed is the the MP5 feels sportier, and for some reason I wanted to sit up straight. Given that, the interior felt really roomy. Definatly a lot of head room in all 5 seating positions. The bucket seats in the front feels like they are gripping you, reassuring you through turns. The 6spkr + sub stereo system was nice (even though woofer was weak), good compared to other stock sound systems. As for the downsides, I agree with the editor, but definatly a fun car until you fill it up with 5 people.

Absolute joy to drive. Solid feeling, comfortable and responsive. Not "underpowered" at all. Plenty of "ooomph" to merge and pass, more horses would just get you in trouble :) Fit & finish is superb. Materials used convey a expensive feel. Just at 32mpg on first 2 tanks (80% highway driving). Loads of standard features. Plenty of room for my 6'5", 300# bulk in front OR rear seats. You won't be disappointed with this car.

I love my Protege5! Mine is loaded (leather, 6 disc in-dash cd changer, sunroof, and a manual trans). The seats are comfortable - they feel like you are sitting and not slouching. Stearing wheel is small and easy to grip and the buttons on the radio and air are easy to use. You don't have to read the manual to learn how to turn the radio on! Another thing I really like about my car is that you can lock all the doors by using your key in the drivers' or passengers' door. And on the remote key, if you accidentaly press the unlock button and you don't open a door, it will relock automatically in about a minute. I really recommend this car!

I've had my Pro5 for less than 4 months and it's got 14,0000 miles on it. I've driven it in the city, the freeway, the mountains and on the twisties full of camping gear, a dog with a bike on the roof and it's still a dream. All the car I need, though if I were dreaming, I'd throw in about 20 more horses. One draw back, I got the leather interior. It looks great and is very comfortable, but when folding the back seats dow, the hinges left grooves in the leather. Both the dealership and Mazda have been unwilling to do anything about it but overall the car is a blast to drive, more fun than my the GTI 1.8, really practical and turns heads.

Just got the car two days ago. Brand new 2003 off the lot. I was leaning towards a Saturn, but the salesman lied to me. Went to the Mazda dealer on a whim, and was surprised at what the P5 had to offer. It had more options then I cared for. Could care less about the moon roof & CD changer. The black color is sharp looking. Needs more power. Breaks good for not having ABS. Wondering how it is going to handle in the ice & snow, which we have here in Up-State NY for 7 to 8 months out of the year? Over all I am very impressed about this little car, which is the first Japan made vehicle I have ever owned.

Overall, this car is the most fun I've had driving a new car in a long time. In fact, I've had mine for 2 weeks now, and I still can't bring myself to take out the paper that's covering the floor mats!!!! While this may not be the most powerful car in it's class, it may not be the roomiest car in it's class either, but for my dollar, this is by far the most fun and best handling car in it's class.

Cargo space is a bit small for a wagon, but it keeps the car small for parking. Lowering the back seats gives you enough space. Nice mixture of wagon, small SUV and sportsy car.

It took me more than a year of research and days of test driving competitors to come to the conclusion my new 2003 Mazda Protege5 was the best choice among the econo vehicles -- great handling, rock solid construction (still made in Japan), features galore and just a heck of a lot of fun to drive. Doing my new car shop via the Internet (feature story on Edward's web site), got my new Vivid Yellow rotege5 “out the door” with a standards along with roof rack, bumper guard, ABS/side airbags, tinted windows and wheel locks for $15,000 and some change. This is a follow-up report. When I first bought the car in May 2002. I travel back and forth from Northern and Southern Californa and must drive the "grapvine" highway which has steep climbs. I get great enjoyment see all SUVs speed drop when going up this hill beause they drive so fast. My 5 maintains its speed. I read that the 5 is underpowered. I disagree. It has more useable power daily driving than the Matix. I own a muscle car which is faster, but the 5 is a better overall daily driver. Plus, the car doesn't jerk at 10 mph as stated by the USA TODAY auto reviewer. After 1 year, I cannot ask for any more from this car.

This has been an awesome experience from day one. The dealership was honest and helpful to say the least, even going to the extent to volutarily give me the vehicle for under invoice so that I could take advantage of a lower interest rate. If you are in the D/FW (Texas) area Hillard Mazda in FW is a very good dealer. We downsized from a Chrysler T&C (awful vehicle : ( ). We were concerned about space, but so far this car has been a blast to drive and the kids love it. We brought it home before buying to test out the trunk space and found that everything fit just great.

Bought the car in April 2003. I'm generally very happy. I got it in Lazer blue, fully loaded without leather. The blue is a little hard to keep clean and so is the black interior. If you are a neat freak, go with the leather. Cargo space is not great and 2 sets of golf clubs will just fit. However, this can be solved by flipping down the seats which. Purchased with sport auto transmission. The car is used mostly for driving in traffic so I'm happy but coupled with the slightly underpowered motor makes for a lazy drive. All in all I am very happy. You don't have to give up much to get a whole lot!

I basically agree with most of the other reviews: the PR5 is fun to drive (w/ 5 spd), especially around a city where you can dart around quickly, and the 6 CD changer w/ 6 speakers is so good it makes me love music even more. Mileage is OK, probably average for this size car. The seats are spacious and comfortable for all but the largest individuals, and the interior layout is quite pleasing. Previous car was '98 Civic w/ no options so I suppose I'm more easily impressed than others.

I was looking for a small SUV or wagon to cart my dogs around in. I was so lucky finding this Protege5. It is much more than I ever expected! Slightly over the base price it has all the options I want or need. Driving it is an absolute pleasure, very responsive and handles as well as my old Camaro. My Protege5 is black and I've seen lots of heads turn checking it out. It is a beauty! I was even asked if it is a small mercedes. My 2 Lab dogs have plenty of room to stretch out, it rides so well they don't get thrown around. Adults say it is roomy in the front and back seats. I researched and test drove all the competition and this was clearly the winner.

Bought this car in Aug 02 out the door with tax for $19K. Now with 9K+ miles, great car to zoom around anywhere short or long distance. Can outhandle almost any car, but cannot outperform many cars, need to gun it to get it to move. A little bit of engine knock when using regular grade gas, but you make the call, premium-worthy enough to eliminate the knock? Cannot get to the storage behind cup holders when cups are there. Tiny armrest compartment can only hold CDs and can only rest one elbow. No cup holders for back passengers.

Pro5's are a well equiped package even in the base models. I have the bare- bone base 5MT model but it still comes with pretty much all the convenience bells and whisles with no additional cost. There are also ample aftermarket parts to make this pocket-car handle even better...and ofcourse, I have already added those to my car. :)

i love it!

Although my Protege5 looks sporty the vehicle itself is more of a practical reliable car. Handling is excellent, but with a 130 hp engine performance is only decent. As a driver the car is a delight to be in, but as a passenger?... not so much! Passengers tend to get nauseous, because the car grabs the road too well. I'm not an aggressive driver either. Good protection from wind noise, but road noise gets excessive above 60mph. Don't get me wrong, I love this car ... for the money.

This is a great car. It handles very well, gets great mileage, and looks great! Get it in silver. I have never been able to turn heads in such an inexpensive car. The interior is rock solid. It never rattles, and the look would be appropriate in several pricier cars.

I just bought a used 2002 Protege5 and am exceptionally delighted with it. I've not had so much fun driving a car since I owned a 1969 Mustang. The Protege5 may not have a V8 or V6, but this little puppy really hustles when it needs to and looks damn good while doing so!The headroom and legroom are exceptional. The front seats are very comfortable, even on long hauls. The rear seats fold down completely and you can haul around an amazing load of stuff. The interior is as stylish as the exterior. Lots of brushed chrome, a leather wrapped 3 spoke steering wheel, leather wrapped shift and easy to read, cool looking digital gauges complete the package.

So far, So good...

I purchased a 2002.5 model when they first came out and I currently have 9k miles on the car. Option include the sport automatic, leather, and moonroof. I was debating between this and a WRX but at the time, Subaru wasn't offering any financing specials. I am very happy with the P5's handling, sporty looks, and quality. I would definitely recommend the P5 to anyone looking for a great package at a great price. The only problem that I have so far is wishing it had more power (that's what i get for driving a wrx first). But this will soon be fixed with a turbo addition via Flyin' Miata.

My wife needed a car to replace our failing saturn. I looked at everything in this price range. Honda, Nissan, Mitsubishi, VW, Kia, and all the americans. I was impressed with the style; it wasn't a little turtle like other brands. I'm 6'2 and when I sat in it, it had plenty of room. It drove great and was very peppy on the interstate. The price allowed us to get the sunroof, the abs breaks, and the side airbags. Very cool car. Ours is a 2002 model. After 8 months of ownership, I'm still very happy.

I bought this car 3 months ago and absolutly love it. After research I wanted a reliable fun car. This by far is the best value car in it's class. Loaded with standard features I only added ABS, Leather, and 6 disk CD/Moonroof...all for a little over 17,000. With the flexibility of folding back the rear seats for cargo and sporty features this car is a must! Moving from a Jetta GLX this car doesn't have quite the same power but once you get it in the higher RPM's, it moves! Very fun to drive!

Restored a 70 VW that got totalled (cell phone driver nailed me) so needed a replacement. Bought a new Saturn ION and when my son brought his new Protege 5 over and let me drive it I knew the ION was going back. What a neat little car. I was driving my Z28 Camaro for a while and while the Mazda is no Z28 it sure gives me the ride and feel of a sporty car. Now, if they could fit a small block Chevy in that thing they couldn't build' em fast enough. I like everything about and the Laser Blue color turns everyones head. and all for 15,000. How do they do it.

I have a little over 400 miles on my 03 P5. I have owned Mazdas in the past and feel confident about the quality. I bought this car as a second car to carry my bicycle around on a bike rack. The fit and finish is as good as my Infinity G35 but the quality of the paint is even better. I bought this car brand new loaded with automatic, leather, sunroof, dimming mirors, ABS, side airbags and polished wheels for $16,300! Does any other car compete at this price level and quality? Answer No.

I've loved the Matrix ever since it came out, and was sure I was going to get it, UNTIL I saw that Protege5. The Matrix is so much bigger and less sport than the Protege5, which is a huge plus! Don't get me wrong, the Matrix is still nice, but side by side, the Protege5 outbeats Toyota's newest model. Also, feature-to- feature, you'll be crazy NOT to choose the Protege5!

I have the optional semi-manual transmission, and it is sooo much fun. I can't wait for the aftermarket stuff to come out for it...it really could use about 30-40 more horsepower (handling at high speeds/cornering/braking is great, and the car was built to handle close to 200 hp in my opinion...currently, it's a slightly weak at takeoff, and it really needs something from about 3000- 4000 rpm). It truly is a small wagon that handles like some of the near- sports cars out there...and it has that expensive-looking styling too.

Wow... Nice ride!

Have only 300 miles on it so far but have loved every single one. Everything has been great so far. Love the crisp handling and the Stereo. Test drove the Matrix and for grins, the Vibe but neither seemed to have been built as well or incorporated the same feature set. I purchased the loaded version with every option and was still under $20,000. What a bargain. I have seem some complaints about more HP but don't see why. If it can get to 65 MPH in under 9.5 seconds(which it does), that's plenty fast for me :-) Besides, more HP means less MPG :-(

I have always driven pick-ups for the convenience of being able to always have room for my stuff, but I hate the poor gas mileage I've been getting (with my 2000 Dodge Dakota). The P5 has PLENTY of room for your stuff, is very fun to drive, has a great sound system (mine has the 6CD chanher and a 100W subwoofer) and gets great gas mileage. I feel a little lower than I'm used to but I'll get used to it! Buy this car, it's a great value and you will love driving it.

Have not had it long, but so far really enjoying the car. Also test drove the Matrix, Vibe, Civic, and Corolla. Liked the Matrix, but would have felt like a fool revving around like you have to in order to get any kind of power. Also, the gauges in the Matrix/Vibe need changes, as does the ridiculous back-up alarm. The Protege5 handles so well, I am intimidated to seek out its limits. The ABS system works beautifully. The shifter and clutch are very, very smooth. And so far the dealership has been equally kind and helpful after the sale as they were before the sale.

After debating a few options like the RAV 4, CRV, and Matrix/Vibe twins, we drove and loved the Protege5. It is as fun to drive as a four cylinder wagon can be, gets good fuel economy, looks cool, and can support my canoe on the roof. The leather seats are supportive, the instrumentation is where it should be, the radio is great, and it has every bell and whistle we need. Mazda has done a fantastic job with this car and I know we will be pleased for years, especially with Mazda's penchant for quality control.

Not a good car for any city driving: - Idle drops off dramatically during in- gear decelleration below 3k rpm, creating lurching. - Weak motor/transmission mounts create drive train bucking during street and stop/go driving. - Computer rpms are way too low (600 at idle) causing frequent stalls when starting up from stop lights or stop sign. - Rear suspension soft, causing front wheel to loose contact and traction during mild acceleration on damp roads. - Heater is poor. - Dealers have no solutions for these - Thanks to the "zoom-zoom" ads, logged as sports car by auto insurers (it aint), so very expensive to insure.

I wanted a relatively small commuter vehicle that had great gas mileage. Also wanted something sporty and that looked nice. Got all that and then some in the PR5! I test drove the Civic EX, Corolla, Matrix/Vibe, and even the Camry (the car my wife wanted). None compared to the PR5 in terms of looks, standard options, performance, and uniqueness (don't see very many on the road). As far as cost, got it for $100 under dealer invoice & 0% interest for 5 years thanks to doing my research here and allowing email to do the negotiating for me. Had the best price nailed before I stepped foot on the lot! This is by far a great value for the money.

After owning a PT Cruiser for 6 months, I dithced it for a Protege5. I had nothing but trouble with the PT and the gas mileage was abysmal (16 combined). The Protege5 outhandles and outperforms the PT in every area accept 1. The PT did have more cargo space. Otherwise, the Protege5 has been a joy. Plenty of room for my needs and waaaaaaay more fun on the back roads. Sure it could use a few more ponies under the hood, but that's what the aftermarket catalogues are for.

Love the handling! Very nice around twisties. Engine likes high rpm's. I love the crisp throttle response, when you've got the engine above 3000 rpm's in 3rd thru 5th gear. Cannot imagine having an automatic when the manual is so much fun to drive! I like the smooth ride and the interior is very nicely thought out (no quirks in the design). Audio is definitely sufficient (6 spkrs - 6cd changer) for the frequent rocker! But the best feature is the handling, steering response, and the handling and the steering response, and handling/steering response is great. I also like the handling/steering of the vehicle.

I am retired and use it for daily trips locally. Average 26-27 mph. Husband has big 350 diesel 4x4 and we use the Mazda for our outings. He is 6' tall and 230 lbs. and have plenty of room.

I've been driving my MP5 for 6 mths. and totally love it. It handles well in the city and highway. It's comfortable, has tons of room for my stuff and looks so cool. I've never been happier with a car. I don't think there is anything in it's price range that holds a candle to this baby! I highly recommend it!!

I chose this car for its roominess, comfort and looks. I test drove a few cars similar in price and I felt as if I were 90 years old rather than 30. I have no kids, but I liked the wagon stlye for the room and the car itself because it is so sporty and fun to drive!!

I got a Protege5 at a Waco, TX dealership (after being frustrated with Austin dealerships). Black Mica; Moonroof w/ deflector; 6CD changer; wheel-locks; Sport automatic; polished alloys. Final price was $17,536. The car is a dream. It operates with the fluidity of a pen; it goes EXACTLY where you want. Amazing streering puts a smile on your face when rounding sharp curves. The space comfortable and the power and acceleration much better than my V6 Xterra. The Black Mica color adds an element of euro-class to the very athletic looking design. I was sold by the test drive. It is THE most fun-to-drive car I have ever owned.

I just hit 5000 miles on the car and it is still a blast to drive. This car has a firm and sporty suspension that makes winding roads fun to drive through. The engine is sufficient to provide a sporty feel yet provide good fuel economy at the same time. I am glad I waited to get the 2003 model with the factory perforated leather (less than $400 invoice price) because it really makes the whole car seem like it cost a lot more than it did. When I describe the vehicle to family and friends on the phone as a small economy car that I paid $15,800 for they are really surprised when they actually see it!

I love my new Proto 5. All options, sweet leather seats and steering wheel, fun to drive, love to corner it. Drives much better than my new Jetta that I sold. (Had all kinds of problems with that car) This car looks sweet and puts all the zoom, zoom, zoom it claims in it's performance. No problem with acceleration here.

I love the way my car feels when I drive it because it handles like a dream. What the Protege'5 lacks in power compared to it's competitors, it more than makes up for in torque and excellent handling. I test drove quite a few cars and none of them were as fun to drive as the Mazda.

Incredible brakes and handling. The tiptronic transmission makes an otherwise so-so 4 speed automatic more than tolerable. The car is built incredibly well. Fit and finish are Lexus quality. Interior driver controls are excellent, ride is smooth and communcative, outward vision excellent. Talk about a car that is easy to drive. It provides a sense of sureness.

The choice was between the Protege5 and the Matrix/Vibe. The PR5 has sportier looks and performance. Exterior styling not as radical as the Matrix/Vibe. I wanted a carpeted cargo area. Interior cloth looks like brushed suede and looks classy. This car seems to appeal to all ages, from the middle aged to teens that like to customize their cars. I find myself volunteering to bring my kids places and run errands just to drive it more. Zoom Zoom!

The Protege5 is fun to drive and a practical little hauler. The car gets great gas mileage -- about 27 in the city -- yet it has plenty of pep when getting on the freeway or out of trouble. Fold down second seats make for a nice-sized flat cargo area. The paint allows for a great shine and the wheels are quite stylish. I have gotten rave reviews from neighbors and friends. Great little car.

I think this car might be the best value for your dollar on the market. It provides a great deal of cargo room/versatility and is a blast to drive. A lot is made of the lack of horsepower...if you are looking for a Mustang, then you are in the wrong market. This car is not underpowered by any means. Would it be more fun with 20-30 more horsepower? Of course. But again, I was not looking for a dragster and I have been extremely happy with the gas mileage I've been getting. (low of 28 high of 32 in mixed driving) On the fun to drive scale, this car is off the charts. It begs to be flogged and thrown mercilessly into corners.

Only lacking in power off the line (Auto Trans.). Sounds and drives like a little race car in all other respects. I bought the automatic as the better half doesn't use the stick. The manual shift option adds another dimension to it! My 17 Y/O said it's like they slapped a hatch on the back of a sports car. Exceeded almost all of my expectations Met ALL of them

Simply all out FUN TO DRIVE!! I sampled each of the comparable vehicles:PT Cruiser, Focus & the Matrix/Vibe twins...taking each for an extended test drive...then I made my choice... The Mazda may be just a touch short on power...but the 130 HP it does provide comes on strong & willing & SMOOTH...The steering is absolutely the high point...just point & go...response from the wheel is accurate & firm. The suspension is tight & grippy..this car was made for cornering! What about the price? Mine came loaded with sunroof, chrome alloys & the compass/self dimming mirror.. all for $16,200...try getting all this in a Matrix!!

I'm guilty for crying out loud. I walk away from the car and check it out as I am going along. It's so hot. But there's a hitch: it's 2 months old and makes a rattling/almost low clatter when the engine's cold, does yours? The dealership denies it(took it in 2X) but is obvious as hell. Started about a month after I got it. Besides that, LOVE IT!

Very QUICK car, good for driving in traffic, and curvy roads, until you get up to high elevations and you lose that last amount of power that seems so important. Quickness is its best virtue, and most descriptive adjective, which is more important than speed, because, we're not racing, are we? SPeed limits favor quickness over power. Super comfortable. The leather seats are fabuloso. The sport trans is fun and fairly functional in many sitations, like mountain roads, traffic jams (you won't need to move to the brake pedal as often). Smooth is another applicable term for this vehicle, especially when driven moderatly. The brakes seem superb.

The car with the most fun for low price.

For value, the below 20k price tag gives you all the good things you want most in a sport car. I am proud to own this car. It's very fun to drive, often come up with any reason to get behind the wheel. It rides smooth, has great handling and comes with every feature standard. A/C works great and the sound system is pretty good too, also gets great gas mileage. To sum it up, this is possibly the best car I've ever owned and I advise you to check it out.

After looking at the likes of the Nissan Altima 2.5S, Jetta, Honda Civic, Ford Focus and Toyota Corolla, the MP5 is a lot of car for the money. Great looks, awesome handling (for a front driver), good passenger room, decent gas mileage and good amenities make it a serious contender in the sub $20K market.
