I purchased my 2003 vehicle new from the local dealer. The vehicle has had basic routine maintenance ever since and on a rare occasion a problem with a rear end mechanism has been practically the only real problem. The leather heated front seats have been wonderful - especially when transporting my elderly mother who was typically cold natured. She always said, "the next car you get has to have heated seats"! However, with 250,000+ miles - I am still driving the vehicle, loving it and can't see any reason to invest in a new car. Best investment I ever made. Only negative side has been the poor service department and company management at the local dealer where I purchased the vehicle. I now travel 70 miles round trip for maintenance rather than deal with the incompetency of the local dealer. LOVE MY FORD EXPLORER!!

I went through 2 transmissions on this vehicle before 120,000 miles. Unfortunately this is not an uncommon problem. Finally traded it in when it required suspension repairs which exceeded cost of the car.

Don't let the looks fool you!

I purchased my 2003 Ford Explorer with 170,000 miles from a private seller because I loved the way it looked. I have always driven SUVs. I like feeling high up and safe. The Explorer was a good vehicle to meet those wants. The Explorer was fast and powerful! A great vehicle for any sort of hauling. It's also very roomy and comfortable. Ford really did a great job with the Eddie Bauer. It had so many great features for a 2003. Unfortunately the Explorer's reliability or lack thereof was enough to drive me away from it after only a few months of ownership. I didn't expect much from an older SUV with high miles but I certainly did not expect what I got. There were times when I did not want to drive anywhere because I was too afraid to! The Explorer was a smooth and comfortable ride, I'll give it that. But maybe that's because I was comparing it to the frequent tow truck rides. I ended up selling the Explorer with around 183,000 miles because I didn't want to foot the bill for a bad transmission, leaking head gasket, three bad wheel bearings, bad steering and suspension components, and a bad charging system.

Chose Explorer over Toyota 4 runner

Chose this Explorer over Toyota 4 runner at the time.... The wider stance and the look of Explorer won over Toyota's reliability and much better interior material. Bought mine in April 2005 with 33K miles. Currently it has 108K miles. I like its size and its handling no matter what weather throws at it. Never had any engine or transmission problems. Had the dealer do fuel filter, transmission service and transfer case /rear axle fluid changes. Have done belt, oil/filter, coolant, brake pads/rotors myself. With 55K miles on second set of tires, they look great and alignment holds well. Problem areas... Leather is super cheap. It folded, creased and aged very quickly on driver side seat. The seat frames anchored to floor had no coating and are rusted. When you open the back doors you can see the rust on frames for front and back seats. No real heat directed to foot well. Some cold air is leaking in the front behind glove compartment. The recirc flap closes but there is still cold air coming in. The heater air blender actuator assembly broke last winter. Figured how to change the air to hot for winter so I was fine. Bought the piece and replaced myself. It was simple to do. Noticed snapped rear coil spring on both sides ( one two inches from bottom and the other one about in the middle of the coil) when replacing rear rotors. The coil spring is part of rear shock assembly. Monroe brand cost about $100 each. Rear axle has the famous whine that affects all these Explorers. Paid to have it fixed and it is back again. Planning on selling this Explorer and my 2003 Ford Ranger and buy an Extended cab 2006 Toyota Tacoma. This Explore is 12 years old and I still like its look and its shape as much as I did 10 years ago when I bought it. Sold this Explore and my 1993 Ranger in Nov 1016 and replaced both with a short bed crew cab 2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD sport V-6 4x4. Tacoma is quiet, well built, and has an excellent feel. Its heater is superior to my old Explorer!!!

Still loving my 2003 Explorer at 188,000 miles

This has been a very reliable vehicle for my family. It is my daily runner back-and-forth to work (22 miles each way), as well as our long distance driver (frequent trips out-of-state). With almost 200K miles, I thought maybe I'd start having problems, but so far I've had to put very little into it. I bought it at 100K miles and since then have had issues with electronic things like the security alarm would go off when the doors were locked and after trips to local dealerships with no answers, out local repair guy disconnected two sensors in the doors. The lights don't come on now when you open those doors, but it also fixed the issue with the alarm going off for no reason. Other fixes have included a new starter just a few miles ago, but mostly I've only ever had wear and tear things need replaced like brakes and rotors. I have a third row seat that isn't used often, but when we do haul other family and friends with us, I love that extra seating. The storage is fantastic and the front seats have plenty of leg room. The back seat isn't as roomy as my daughter would prefer, but she travels well back there. I average 16-18 miles per gallon between high way and city driving. I am struggling with how long to keep this great vehicle. I paid $7500 for it in 2009 and the KBB value is currently $3600. It has very little rust (although a problem of this year Explorer is the back hatch cracking under the glass). It did have one crack when I bought it and now it has two. I really do love this trust worthy vehicle!

I <3 my ford expl. but too many problems now :(

i bought my ford explorer 2003... 9 years ago.... now had 170.000 miles on it!!! never never have any problems until now!!! i rebuilt my transmission on march 2015 and was fine ..i tough that was the end of the problem ..but not.... now in July my car would not accelerate it will turn on beautiful no noise or nothing!! i took it to the mechanic and he told me is not worth fixing my truck!!!!!! i need to change the motor and it will cost a lot of money and probably will break again.. i definitely will recommend Ford explorer!! i almost forgot i did had a accident in 2007 the whole right front was damage but likely the fixed just fine because not problems at all. And in 2012 i almost have another accident in the expressway but thanks to my fast reaction and how good my truck answer to my driving and the brakes responded was absolutely incredible... very reliable car!!!!

I bought my Explorer from the same dealership that sold it to the original owner, and that owner had followed the service schedule to the letter (as shown in the Carfax report). It had 101,000 miles on it when I bought it in 2013, it's got 118,000 miles now. I don't much like trucks, being a sports car kind of driver, but I really like the Explorer (which btw handles WAY better than you'd expect, due no doubt to the IRS. I have emulated the first owner's habit of maintaining the snot out of it: new brakes/rotors, transmission flush and fill, cooling system the same (differentials and transfer case next). I am quite happy with my Explorer.

I absolutely love my explorer had it for 2 years and no major problems bought it when it had 75000 miles on it and it now has 115000 miles. One thing I learned is its not the vehicle it's the driver that makes stupid mistakes. Just cause its an suv doesn't mean it's meant for off road use. I also disagree with the gas mileage I have the 4.6 v8 and it gets 17.2 in the city and 24 on the highway absolutely love the fact that when I fill it u p it says 387 miles to empty and it only costs about 65 to fill it up. Absolutely love it!!!

Nice enough vehicle except access to the back seat in the 2 door model is close to zero since the driver's seat only moves forward/back 2". I'll never have a two door SUV again. With only 80,000 miles on it, the timing chain(s) are making noise. Apparently it was a recall issue that previous owners never took care of. It is expected to go out at 100K or so. Repair bill is $3200.00. Ford should honor this recall even though it's ten years old. I feel like I got screwed here, and I was happy with two previous Rangers, -a 98 and 01.

I've owned my 2003 Explorer XLT for 11 years now, and have had no problems whatsoever. Although "Old Faithful" is now a "second car" (I bought a 2014 Escape SE for my 100 mile commute to work), it still tows boats, hauls canoes, transports the dogs, and is our favorite vehicle for camping trips. I've never had any trouble with this SUV, and plan to drive it 'til it drops - maybe in another 300,000 miles or so!

Not built to last more than 100,000 mi. heard clicking noise dealer could not find problem. paint on roof and hood is chipping off. Poor paint job Dealer rebuilt front bearings at 30,000mi Transmission now has to be replaced. Transmission, bearings and transfer case poor quality. Ford should recall this vehicle I wish I had read the reviews on this vehicle

I've owned a Nissan, Mitsibushi, and a Pontiac, and have to say Ford is best vehicle I've had yet! I've had far less issues with my Ford Explorer and love driving it. I bought it in 2006 and put 37K miles on it. It currently has about 75K miles and only had routine maintenance on it. My only complaint is the crappy gas mileage 15mpg. The rear panel recently cracked, but you can avoid this. I had sprayed winshield washer fluid on it during a very cold Colorado winter day. The repair is outrageous, close to $700. The handling is excellent and the ride roomy and comfortable. Well built inside and out. Engine has plenty of power and 4WD is nice. I plan on keeping my Ford for a while.

I owned this truck for 4 years. In that time it blew two transmissions, all the wheel bearings, two sets of brakes all around, broke a rear spring, cracked rear hatch plastic, seized steering column, two doors that would not close in cold weather, a door that would not lock, a blown coil probably other things too. One of the worst cars I have ever known, reliability wise. I did really enjoy driving it, engine was a fuel pig but really smooth. 4wd worked ok, it was basically full time, but only with rear wheel slippage. I tried to get help from Ford when the second tranny blew, but nope. So to heck with them, I own all Japanese now (Ridgeline and Lexus) and they are nearly flawless

I just took my Ford to the dealership, it has only cost me about $2500 in problems up until now, the quote for repairs of things like rear differential, transfer case, ect $6238!! They must be out of their minds. So for $38000 new the truck lasted to 135,000 miles. Disgusting. I will NEVER buy a Ford again. I went back to Chevy and maybe just buy a Honda or Toyota next time. My friend just turned in her Camry with 400,000 miles on it and STILL running. Have you ever heard anyone say that will a Ford or Chevy without replacing the motor or trans? No.

This is the first Ford product I have owned and it has changed my opinion of Ford. I have owned this SUV for about 5 years and have found it to be very reliable. I have done mainly routine maintanence. Of course the hatch plactic/glass is cracked like all other '03s. I have not had any transmission problems. I have replace a couple of wheel bearings. But, I now have 225,000 K on the car. It doesn't burn a drop of oil and goes through any amount of snow. I would highly recommend this make/model/year/engine.

I and my family have been avid and loyal Ford customers for many years until now. Bought the Explorer new. I was alarmed when I went to the web and the government site and saw many customers complaining about Explorer transmission failure. I called Ford Customer Relations and was met with indifference and no help. I asked for a goodwill repair or discount and they flatly refused. A transmission specialist said that Ford built a very bad transmission during that time and it is a surprise that there was no class action against them for a poorly designed transmission. I am not going to say I'll never drive another Ford, but I will shop with their competitors. We now own a Honda CRV.

I have always been a Ford Fan. I refused to buy any other model for close to 40 years, but that is about to change. I purchased a 2003 Ford Explorer XLT and it has been one problem after the other. I have replaced the rearend, the motor, and now the Transmission has gone out. Before all of this I also had the heater control swith to mess up. This was $800.00 to replace. The gas hand is going out and works only part time. As you can see one headache after another.

This truck is like superman! Unfortunately, we almost had to sell it because one of the timing chain guides broke. But, our friends a mechanic and fixed it so it's good as new. Our's is a mineral grey, and it still sounds as powerful and solid as it did back in 2003. This interior is made of woven material rather than leather, because most fabrics cause me irritation. But it has a killer sterio system and refuses to get stuck in anything. It does not seem like it only gets 99 on the highway, and it's not a gas hog. I recommend one to anyone who needs room for children, or just likes big trucks.

Flashing OD light and service engine soon come on at 62K miles while my son is driving to prom. Dealer makes us wait 4 days to get in the shop. They have it all day, never call, when I call them they ask to call back in a few minutes. They claim lots of transmission diagnostic codes (though when I pick up vehicle service engine light is still on and no sign that anyone tested anything). They want 4000 to replace transmission plus tell me I have a frozen caliper. I take care home, pull front wheels, caliper isn't frozen but metal on metal on inside of brakes (they checked 2K miles back and said no issue). Car still going with bad tranny for now, I replaced the brakes, no more Fords.

After reading through the Cons. Reviews on this site, I felt the need to comment on my bullet proof Ford Explorer. I am at 99,900 miles and have had not one problem and the engine and smooth transmission still perform like the day I bought it. Before my daughter's try outs for a local perf. arts school, her clarinet lessons were a necessity. Through major snow storms that kept most in their homes, we were able to tackle the snow and ice with ease and still make it to her lessons. The ride and handling are exemplary and the hwy ride is very quiet-my family and I feel no pressure to speak up during front-to-3rd convers. I follow the maint. guide and it will likely serve me well for many more..

We bought our Explorer with 7 years and 80k on it. I did my research before buying the truck. I knew there were problems with the transmissions along with a list of other known problems. Our truck seems to have no transmission issues. It shifts very smoothly. Of course, it could have already been replaced. The one problem that we are having is it loses coolant. Every few days I have to add water to it. Have not had it diagnosed, but will be soon. My husband worries that it is going into the engine which will cost some major bucks for an engine rebuild. At this time we are hoping that is not what it is. I love my truck. It rides good, is comfortable, and looks good.

Also the 4x4 system works great too. This thing held up to hitting a 300 lb deer and came out with just a few things that needed to be replaced (headlight, grill) nothing major, this thing is like a tank it just won't stop I love this truck and am going to continue to drive it to the day it dies!

Just returned from a trip and the O/D light started flashing. All recommendations from Ford service and independents state that a transmission change is required. Very expensive since happened at 106,000 miles. This is on top of just replacing the rear differential bearings, and wheel bearings that Ford service said were bad. All this after the extended warranty was up. The rear differential fix was done 18 months prior the first time while under warranty. Far too many problems with this drive train.

Love the car, although too soon to report any big problems I don't know about yet. Would suggest the car to anyone looking into one as of now. Opening up the sunroof and windows makes for a pleasant ride on a cool day. Paint looks great for it's age, and the interior is totally clean. A best buy!

Our explorer has lasted about 100,000 miles with only minor things break. One of the hydraulic lifts for the glass lift gate falls out of it's hole and a wood insert on the door fell out. Everything else is still very good.

Before 36K ran out Ford fixed trans three times and put in a new one, finally. Replaced total rear end after Differential gears went NG twice. Ford than replaced bearings in their new rear end. Brakes are typical Ford truck and don't last. I have had Fords for 40 years. Mileage is terrible, 15 mpg. Electric sensors are typical made in China junk and have failures galore. This is my last Ford. Too bad, Ford just buys crappy parts from the lowest bidder and the consumer pays the price. I hear their new small cars are decent. Stick with Toyota or if you like Ford explorer stick with the V8 Eddie Bauer It is a better all around quality version of the other explorers but you pay or that.

Reading these reviews makes one worry so I had to chime in. At 100K I've only done basic maintenance, put in the new a/c and repaired the drivers window. Brakes at 60K and new tires. Yes, she needs the bearing done now but folks, no vehicle runs without a few replacements. On the positive, best drive around in an SUV, room galore, great 4X4 and the best comfort available. The hood paint peeling was an early issue and Ford replaced with a non aluminum at no cost. This is my second Explorer (1999 and 2003). '99 was the 6 cyl EB edition and I just wanted more power. With gas where it is, I'm looking for a 6 again now. Can't kill that engine, never a tranny issue with either.

I purchased this SUV with 60.000 miles on it. Within 1 year the rear differential died, ac compressor, transmission rebuilt, wheel bearings, ball joints, brakes on all 4 corners. Multiple other maint items. All that said the transmission is shot again and the rear is whining and chattering again. I'm a single parent of two. One of which is handicapped. I cannot afford any of these repairs anymore and will never buy another explorer.

Since I purchased this car used for $11K Ive spent another $12k in repairs; the transmission needed to be rebuilt; the engine a moth later; both rear bearings went out causing the knuckles to get damaged; I've replaced the A/C compressor THREE TIMES in 3 years; the fuel pump went out ; the wiring is bad; the stereo has CDs in its changer that will never come out again; the check engine light goes on every two weeks or so; the tailgate has a crack where the (Fix Or Repair Daily) emblem is and it gets lousy mileage costing me about $100.00 a week in gas alone just to drive to work. I HATE this car; but thanks to all the money I've spent fixing it, I can't afford to buy something else.

We bought this car [used] five years ago with 22,000+ miles on it. It has served us perfectly well in all of this time until its untimely demise in an auto accident a few days ago. I walked away from the accident with not one scratch. With an impact of more than 45 MPH, it could have been much, much worse. "Built FORD tough..." Yes INDEED! In addition to the car itself, the fact that Ford did not take any of the government stimulus money keeps me faithful to such a sturdy and independent organization. Sure, nobody's perfect, but FORD is perfect for me! I am in the market for a new car and am searching far and wide for another FORD to call my own! :)

They need to recall the tailgate on this model for design defects relating to the crack at the emblem. Dealer says no. If not a design defect, why the design before and after this year include only the glass that would lift. Nearly every vehicle of this type has the crack at the emblem located on the tailgate. Can be fixed to the tune of nearly $800 at my cost.

Considering I've got 127,000 miles and looking back over the last 7 years of ownership I would have to say I've been somewhat pleases with this car. Unfortunately I'm having both front wheel bearing done now plus brakes and I'll be out $1500. The rear end whines horribly and you can't hear anyone talking but I'm not paying for the repair. Others have done it and problem returned. At least my tailgate cracked in warranty and they replaced it 4 times but it cracked again and I'm stuck with it now. I managed to keep a spare but won't bother putting it on. I'll need ball joints soon too. It's only worth $3500 on a trade so I'll hang on but no more new cars for me. Just not worth it.

Bought new off the lot and the car would shake violently over 60mph. Ford finally replaced the complete rear drive train due to defects. Guess what, started shaking again about a month later. They replaced it again. Now at 80,000 the transmission that was "replaced" is toast and the radiator cracked.

This truck has always been fun to drive. On the highway it is very nimble. Changing lanes is very predictable. Their is plenty of power when needed inpart to 3:73LS AXLE that allows for faster acceleration. The auto fwd feature can be annoying with the slight hesitation in grabbing the pavement when the rear wheels slip. But it does do the job. I prefer to keep in full time 4 wheel drive in heavy snow. It's a nice easy truck to drive. I've had very few mayor problems with. I replaced the flywheel at 85000. Theirs been no engine problems. It does have the second set of tires and second set of brakes.

Bought this car new for my wife, she loved it! Year 1 had to replace the brakes, $200 JUST for the rear pads no labor(repeat annually). Year 2, air bag sensor broke - 'fixed' 5 times still broken. Year 3-4, transmission went at 55000 miles, just past warranty $3000, front wheel bearing went $600, CD player jams can't use it anymore. Year 6, front wheel bearing gone again and just replaced the battery a second time. If my other car were paid off, I'd buy a honda or toyota today.

A fine, tight, smooth running vehicle. Unfortunately the rear-end is so weak it was whining at 8000 miles and needing replacement. The transmission started shifting improperly at 25000 miles. I don't believe a vehicle should need a new rear-end and transmission so early. I have a Toyota with 325000 miles and it is running better than my explorer. I love my explorer but very unhappy with the mechanical bills, over $4000 within 175000 miles. Other gripes include new brake pads yearly, electric window that has not worked since new, door ajar light on most of the time, and ABS sensors failing.

This is my 7th (and last) Ford. I bought it used with 34000 miles on it four years ago. It now has 61500 miles on it, and in that time I have replaced: the rear differential, the rear axle seals, the rear main seal, the oil pan gasket, the cruise control servo, the transmission cooler, and both front wheel bearings. Thank goodness I bought the extended warranty. Also, the paint is peeling at the corners of the hood. I have seen many Explorer's do this, and have heard it is a problem with many of them. The third row seat is nice, but doesn't allow much room for any cargo.

The car has been hammered on with rough roads and long winters. It is great for towing. I put a brush gaurd on the front and it looks great. I am 6ft 5' and it is very comfortable for me. I love this car, i can fit 2 bikes in the summer and all the boards, skis, and gear of 5 people in the winter time(this car handles great in snow) i drive it pretty hard offroad and it takes all of the punishment without issues. its been jumped, drifted, backed into, smashed, and evertything else i throw at it and it keeps going. the mpg is not great in the town but its a SUV. however i recently put a flowmaster 40 on it which made it sound great and it brought the mpg up to 17-18 which is fabtastic to me because i drive it hard. the only problem i have it a CV joint but thats a wear item and easy to fix.

This isn't my daily driver, but it has been basically reliable so far. The plastic underneath the rear hatch glass cracked inexplicably a few months ago, but that has been the only significant problem. Good highway ride, good in the snow, plenty of room for hauling stuff around. Rear A/C with controls up front is a very nice feature even if you don't have people in the back, because it gets the cabin frosty cold in a hurry even on hot days (American cars always seem to have better, stronger AC than Japanese for some reason). On the highway, mileage isn't horrible for such a big heavy vehicle, but it stinks in town. I expect I'll be getting several more years out of it.

I have to say over all the vehicle is a pleasure to drive. Very comfortable ride and no too bad on gas. I cant say i have had any major problems and as far as minor problems well.. the only trouble i have had so far was first on the passenger side the door sensor built into the lock that told the vehicle the door was closed stopped working properly. I needed to take off the door panel and play around with it and used a little WD-40. not sure what caused it but my fix seemed to work. Roughly 3 moths later same on the drivers side - same fix worked fine and they have both been fine since. Had the vehicle and needed to change all rotors and brake pads once. Besides that I cant complain at all

Under the window on the top piece there is a composite piece that now has 2 huge cracks in it. The dealership says they see it all the time but can't fix it because there is no recall. I have googled it and there are way tomany people with this problm. My concern is If water gets down through the crack it could very well rust the latching mechanism and make it fail to work properly and I have a 1 yr old and 3 yr old in the back seat.

Currently at 140K and all I've had to do was rear brakes at 136K, alternator and battery at 105K and going to do front brakes next month probably. I see all these issues and wonder why mine hasn't had these issues. Maybe it did, but not with me. I really should replace spark plugs and wires but waiting for the extra money. Handles AWESOME in snow. Gas is decent with V6 getting an average of 16 city and town- would be better if i drove a little nicer :) Love the truck and will be getting another one. I purchased this vehicle three years ago, with only 30,000 miles. I had to replace the brakes/rotors all around, shortly after purchasing, all four wheel July, and I just found out that I needed all of these items replaced again. This thing had 17" wheels, and I had to replace them every 10 months. The transmission had a whine in it, there was a clicking noise and a really loud roaring sound in the front, drivers side. The cruise control didn't work. It would frequently take spells of not starting. It would grind really fast, like it had been flooded, and I would just have to sit and wait for it to start. It was quite roomy, but it was hard on gas and tires, and very expensive to fix.

Purchased pre-owned with 47000 miles. AC problems within first six months. Had to replace entire AC system due to metal throughout. Driver's door handle broke off when it was cold. Back panel beneath the liftgate window cracked when it was cold. A coat hook in rear compartment snapped off first time I used it. It just seemed that something was breaking or needed repairs. I am planning on trading this vehicle within the next week or so. Enough of "Quality is Job 1." Lots of positive reviews from this model as it was one of the reasons I purchased the Explorer. The rear end was replaced within one year, tail lights replaced, several of the power windows replaced, ball joints replaced, a/c replaced. All of the repairs have been done under 60000 miles. I bought this vehicle in 05 with 17k,we now have almost 80k on this vehicle and have only replaced the tires once and the rear brakes once. I was nervous about buying a Ford but would now buy one again. It is costly regarding gas but most SUV's are and the reliability more than makes up for the fuel cost. This vehicle is very utilitarian for us and we treat it more like a truck than a SUV. I haul everything in it and at times can be pretty rough on it, it takes it all in stride. Also the AWD makes this thing a tank in the winter, and we live in the East. Makes me feel safe when my wife and kids are in it. This is a daily driver for us and we have taken many road trips in it with no problems.

My hubby just got T-boned by a large work van (bigger then him, always envisioned it as the other way around) doing 60mph, never even slowed down for his red light. The truck is completely destroyed, but my hubby walked away. The sensors worked and all the right air bags went off. Even if me and my son were sitting on the pass. side, we would have been OK. 100% worth the mechanical problems (but my hubby is a Ford mech. and we can get these things fixed easily and inexpensively). When everything is running top notch, fuel economy is actually pretty good. Watch your O2 Sensors and plugs, sparks- you'll see it in your gas tank. The rear design as someone mentioned - not so good.

I can only evaluate the 2003 Explorer by comparing it to my previous 1994 Explorer. In short, the 1994 Explorer was a quality vehicle. No major problems were experienced during the 9 years (108,000 mi) I owned it. On the other hand the 2003 Explorer has been a maintenance nightmare! The following items were replaced: light switch, back window motor, universal joints, then complete drive shaft, front wheel bearings, emergency brake parts. The rear end was replaced twice and then TSB 05-23-3 was installed all with the same results-- the rear end whine always returned after a few thousand miles. Where did Ford's quality workmanship go? The 2003 Ford Explorer is a substandard vehicle!

Well I hope I don't jinx myself with this review but I have to say I have been pretty fortunate with my Explorer. I bought it used in 2006 with 63,000 KM's, one week before the arrival of my son. It was either an SUV or a minivan and quite frankly it was a nobrainer for me since I don't like minivans and they stink in the snow anyway. 2 years later the truck has only given me 1 problem which is I had to replace 3 wheel bearings. Other than that I have had zero issues thankfully. The truck is very comfortable for long drives, the family loves it. I put in a 10" overhead DVD player for the family to watch movies and the kids are happy campers.

I've had my Eddie Bauer Explorer for a few years now, and it definitely has its high points. The features and comfort of the interior are great. There is adequate room for adults in the second row. The V-6 model pulls my 4,200lb boat/trailer combo pretty well (though I had to add a class IV hitch). My only complaint is the reliability. I never buy extended warranties, but I did on this vehicle (luckily). I've put only 12000 miles on this truck, and replaced the differential, axle seal, transmission cooler, cruise control servo, oil pan gasket, and rear main seal (all between 34000 and 36000 miles). Many of these failed prior to ever towing, so I can't blame that.

This SUV was purchased used. It has had an unusually high maintenance cost. The most expensive costs have been associated with the rear end humming that exists on 2002 to 2005 models. I am on the 4th rear end and the problem still exists. My local Ford dealership has given up and told me to live with the noise. The front wheel bearings failed, the universal joints failed, a back window motor failed, the main light switch failed, there was a problem with the emergency brakes, and I can not turn off the head lights! This vehicle has less than 70K miles.

Our XLT is now 5 years old with 75K miles. The car has been relagated to light duty and occasional use due to the awful gas mileage (12-19 mpg). The car has been very reliable with only a minor recall (rear window glass pins) and one bad valve cover gasket. The ride is trucky and the car is slow and ponderous but by 2003 standards, not bad. Highway comfort and utility is great and the car is a comfortable long distance cruiser. The gray monotone interior has held up well though the cloth seats love to attract lint. Unfortunately, with crossovers now on the market and the lousy gas mileage, this car is fast becoming obsolete.

I bought my Explorer in 06 used with 54k. I noticed while test driving there was a sort of howling sound when I went about 55mph, but didn't mind it much compared to my Neon I was trading in for it. Since then, I have had problems with one of the rear windows working only when it wants to, I've not been able to put the shifter in reverse multiple times, the mechanism to recline the seat has also came off many times. The seal on the rear window has came off and I noticed this when I found water in the back. My a/c is out as I speak, so I will be taking that in, although I had it recharged at the end of last summer. I've kept up on maintenance and it is not paying off as it should.

Coming up on 100k miles in a few months. No real issues to speak of. Hangs up a little when shifting from drive to park. Has been very reliable (minimal repairs & pretty minor at that). Gets about 16 miles to the gallon in town, about 20 on the highway.

I owned a 1996 explorer and it was a gas guzzling rattlebox with inferior quality built into almost every aspect of its existence. I figured the newer models would fair better so I bought a 2003 xlt used with 40k. I now have 52k on it and it rattles just like the 1996 with no visible inprovement, the interior materials are inferior and show wear prematurely. The seats are not very compfortable. This truck sucks down gas if I drive very slow and 55 mph I get 15 mpg, if I drive normally its about 11 or 12. The 2003 seems more reliable mechanically but I am afraid as I surpass 52k. Overall I would not feel good about buying another for product. It also has a very poor resale value.

I purchased my vehicle new and have been religious about maintenance since day one. I can honestly say this has been one of the worst car experiences of my life. I've had numerous problems beginning with just 15K miles including power window motor failure - leaking tranfer case(30K) - ball joints (40K) - paint defects (50K) - strut joints (70K) - transmission failure (100K) and alot of other things. All this added up to incredible unforseen expenditures - the tranny being $800 alone. I have never towed with this vehicle, not drove it harshly. I stayed with this car way too long Lesson's learned the hard way.

This Explorer w/Sport package is now nearly five years old. We had no need for the 3rd row sea but the step boards were a nesssesity for my wife. The alloy wheels give better appearance as well as being able to clean easier. The grey plastic bumpers and wheel mouldings show no damage as painted ones would have due to minor scrapes. In 36,000 miles I have only had to pay for GOF and wheel rotations and the full 30,000 Ford rec. service.

I bought my Explorer with 33,000 miles, now I'm approaching my 2nd year of owning and have 98,000 miles on it. Very comfortable for driving 100 miles each way to and from work. My alternator went out at 60,000 miles. Replaced battery. Bought the truck and the A/C wasnt working and had to have it serviced twice, now the A/C finally works. Stereo could be better, I replaced the speakers with inifintis. The brakes need to be replaced again: got them done at 36,000. Annoying clicking noise when moving at a slow speed. Poor gas mileage. I'm going to a Honda soon.

we bought this vehicle with 29000 miles, at 42000 the differential started howling, after many phone calls to ford and and a refusal to allow them to charge me $1700.00 to repair this they conceded to repair the differential if i would pay for a wheel bearing that they claimed was bad but that the noise from the differential prevented me from hearing. now at 58000 miles the parking brakes have and i quote "have disentigrated" ford claims this is normal and happens every 2-3 years on this vehicle regardless of mileage but it isn't a quality issue so for $450.00 they repairing it with the same ford quality parts that failed in the first place. can't wait to get it back so i can trade it in.

I have this Ford XLT 4x4 since 2003 and never had to repair anything. I currently have 80,000 and all I've changed is tires, spark plugs and serpentine belt, oil every 3,500 miles. I can not ask for anything better...great truck. I feel very safe when I have my family with me. I believe that some things happened because of driving style and care of any car. My only problem is a development of squeaky noise in the front end and I've found what was, nothing of inportance, easy to fix. It is the lower control arm bushing that dries with the weather, WP40 did the job

I purchased a 2003 Limited Explorer in Feb of 2007. I've put about 20000 miles on it so far and I am extremely happy with it. I travel a lot and carry a lot of stuff with me and it has plenty or room for everything. I get around 19-22 mpg on the highway using gas and around 15 running ethanol. As far as driving the vehicle, it handles good and rides good as well but if your looking for a fun ride this is not the SUV for you. The AWD limites any attempt get "crazy", although, I did take it off road once in the snow and easily did donuts in 4WD! Overall, i would reccomend this vehicle to anyone who is looking for a nice, clean ride that looks and feels classy.

I took very good care of our 2003 Ford Explorer (even took it to the dealer for the 30K checkup). At 59,500 miles and just under 5years, the transmission went out. The dealer wouldn't cover the replacement since Ford only offered 3yr/36K power train warranty at that time. The transmission specialist I took it to, indicated that he sees transmission problems all the time with Ford Explorers

We bought our Explorer used with 16000 miles have no trouble with it except for the shift interlock at 18k and the rear end at 30k. The dealership was excellent in both cases. They replaced the rear end with no hassle (I took it in for a roar in the rear) after first trying to replace the bearing. Overall I have driven it on long trips through the mountains and love the responsiveness of the engine, comfort, and average mpg. Impressed after hearing a few horror stories. Would purchase again from the same dealer. I think the dealer makes a big difference.

We are thrilled for the most part with our 2003 XLT. We needed something big enough for 5 people and chose the Explorer. It is a blast to drive, when we have gone on trips we have gotten as high as 27 mpg on the highway. It is comfortable and spacious. We have had no problems except occasionally when we put it in reverse it will jerk. I have read some reviews and disagree with some of the negative ones we are very pleased for the most part. We pull a 21 ft travel trailer and forget it is behind us. However the interior trim does look some what cheap, but that is just ford!! We will buy another Explorer if need be. It is built Ford tough!

I purchased this truck figuring it would be great for many years! It has been good, but of course, it's had it share of problems. I don't care because, even a high end car has problems. Anything man made in reality. What I don't like is you have to jump thru hoops with Ford to get things fixed. Things they know about. Not untill I printed the TSB's for the problems did they get fixed for free. I've had the rear end done, lift gate replaced from the typical crack, shift interlock problem, wheel bearing, rear brakes locking up, and I'm sure a few others. Love the truck, just wish Ford could do a better job. No wonder they don't campaign "Job 1 Quality First" anymore :(

In the last year, this car has givem me fits. The exterior is fine, but I have had multiple problems. CD player malfunctions. AC does not work when outside temperature passes 85. If it's hot outside and I am on the highway, the temperature gauge somtetimes spikes to "H" and I get dashboard warnings. But several checks to repair places and two dealers could not correct the problem. The back bumper mounted sensors also stopped working after two years.

Like the truck except front wheel bearings need replacing after only 52,000 miles at a cost of $1,000. Ford would not assist, not covered by warranty. I bought this car new in 2003 and it has been great so far. We have 47k miles and have put only $416 into it for regular service. It is due for a transmission service, fuel filter and tires so we'll probably spend another $600 pretty soon. Here are the quirks: The standard equipment tires create a lot of road noise. The rear hatch rattled but was fixed under warranty. From P to R the transmission has a catch and does not glide smoothly. The fuel gauge sometimes takes several hours to register a full tank after refueling. Gas mileage is average. Overall we are very happy with this SUV. Previously had a Cherokee that we put over $3k into by this mileage. I truly believe Ford makes a quality product.

I've had this vehicle for a couple years...nice to drive for a truck, comfortable, good looking in & out, lots of features, easy to handle size, very useful vehicle. Had endless quality problems at first fixed under extended warranty: Rear axle clutch packs (twice to fix howling), 3.73 differential gears, drive shaft, steering ball joints, 3 serpentine belts, radio, leaking lights, seat track, cruise control switch. Rear window motor died but left unfixed. Leather seats start to crack and fade despite leather treatment. Fortunately, the quality problems have all been fixed but this doesn't give a good feeling about long term durability. V6 power only adequate. No wonder Ford has problems

This is my second Explorer (1996 and 2003). Overall it is a good vehicle but not excellent. I have had more repairs than I expected. It is in for servicing now and at 60,000 miles both front ball joints have to be replaced. The driver heated seat no longer works. I have a DVD entertainment system and it had to be replaced (luckily under warranty). The tailgate hydraulics have never worked in cold weather (need to physically push up tailgate). I am concerned about power window motor going out in rear passenger window (does not always work). I have been satisfied for the most part with this vehicle but am concerned that too much is going to fall apart. My 1996 has 130,000 miles and held up better.

I have owned this truck for many years now and I must say that it has held up quite well. Yes, there were problems but very few and minor. I have 87K miles now and there has been no problems with the entire drivetrain. I think if one keeps the regular maintenance (tires, brakes, fluids, etc.) up there should be few problems with the truck for well over 150K. Moreover, compared to my 01 F150 4X4 and some other vehicles I have driven, this Explorer is a dream to drive in the Michigan winters.

The latest transmission issue (torque converter) is setting me back $1,200.00. Overall this is a very disappointing purchase.

To my surprise, drove 20.000 miles in one year. Averages around 21 mpg on highway with A/C blowing and flat out cruising. Never had a problem with acceleration or performance. Recently had rear end clutch pack replaced at 49.000 miles. Made an earlier decision to purchase an extended warranty because I obtained vehicle used. Dealer fixed with no charge to me. This is a documented service issue for vehicle model. Driver's seat a bit firm and could use a little more adjustability.

We purchased our Eddie Bauer in September of '03 and have absolutely loved it, except for one thing...the QUALITY! This vehicle has been nothing but pure junk from the minute I drove it off the lot. It came from the factory with a bad moonroof seal. Wind whistled in for months, but I was afraid a trip to the dealer would make it worse. Of course, when water started pouring in at ~38K miles, they wouldn't repair it. Had documented problems with rear end at 32K, 41K, 60K and finally at 71K the rear end failed. Ford and dealer refused to help out even though I had receipts to document the problem. $900 out of pocket for a problem that began in warranty. Been a Ford man all my life, no more!

Bought the Eddie Bauer 2-wheel drive V6 back in May of 03. I have been pleased with the truck so far. I only have two minor complaints. One, on occasion it takes the computer around 50 miles on to compute the fuel remaining in the tank. Second, I have had two window motors go out, not a big deal, but pretty annoying. One problem for people with small kids is that it is next to impossible to put a rear facing car seat in the middle position in the back seat. It's actually more convenient in my Saab. My wife gets fiery red every time she puts in the seat in her Eddie Bauer. She has been pleased with the automobile overall, and would recommend it to anyone like I would.

My first review was in 2003, only a couple of months after my new purchase of Explorer. Now 3 years later, I have had several problems with it. The rear end has got something major wrong! It makes a horrible whining and grinding noise. I have had 3 window motors replaced. Radio will go off for no reason. Transmission is not right. I love the comfort and look and all of my "bells and whistles", however, I am now looking to get rid of it because of the rear end troubles. I have heard this will cost me a fortune. This happened at 37,000 miles and ever since the warranty ran out, it has been downhill!

This is my 2nd XLT, drove the 1st one 145K. Overall, I'm happy with, but have had more problems with it than the '95. Has a nice ride, great performance with the V8 towing package. Nice sound system. Passable, but barely, for towing 7K boat and trailer. Just a few more horses would be nice. Hated the 17" Goodrich tires that came on it - noisy and out-of-round - should have traded them out, but used them for 20K before giving up. Like many others, LS clutches in the rear end failed at about 40K. Computer problem early took 3 weeks to get the part, but dealer supplied a loaner for the duration. I'd buy one again just to stay with the same dealer, who has been great. At times, I'd like 4WD.

I purchased my Explorer in 4/2006. It was used and only had 15,000 miles. I paid roughly $15000 and don't regret this purchase.Compared to my Impala, which I gladly traded in, and considering size difference, the Explorer gets the better mileage. I originally wanted a Chevy Trailblazer but for the price of a used Trailblazer and after speaking with people who owned Trailblazers (I found out numerous complaints), I decided to LOOK at Explorers. I was anti-Ford, and still am except for the line of SUV/trucks. I fell in love and found zero complaints from Explorer owners. It's wonderful for travels, T-ball, and friends with kids, roomy enough for me, my linebacker husband, and our linebacker son!

I HAD the 2003 Explorer and from the start I had transmission problems. First went out at 7,000 miles, next one went out at 21,000 and last one went at 36,000. Seems Ford has had problems with these transmissions and refuses to admit it. I learned that the 2006 still have the problems; about 2 out of 5 sold come back with transmission problems. If you have nothing to do go sit in the service waiting room and asked the people waiting. You will think twice about buying one. Worst of all is Ford's complete failure to help; they refuse to admit to the problem and refuse to even consider a swap or favorable trade in. I was finally forced to turn the car back in because you guessed it. THINK TWICE

It was good until 17,000 miles, had a slight miss when idling, and engine would surge and sometime die. Still not fixed after 3 tries, gear shifter is harsh from park to reverse and it sounds like the rear end is falling out. Transmission had to be rebuilt and problem is still not fixed; it really clunks when I take it out of park. Window has also squealed, steering wheel cover also peeled off.

Love the interior amenities (DVD player, leather, V8, etc.). Had an engine problem at around 40K miles (conveniently just out of warranty), finally diagnosed properly after 2 weeks in the shop and an extended warranty purchase ($2K cost). 60K miles now, and fingers are crossed that the worst is over with the engine. Build quality is decent, and we do like the SUV. Great in the snow too.

Definitely Don't Recommend!

I bought my Explorer new because it was a nicely designed, comfortable vehicle. Unfortunately after about 25K miles many things went wrong. Mostly minor, but very annoying. Ford did not fix all of them and told me my emergency brake (pads?) needed changing. I never use that and was quite surprised to hear they came out in "rusted chunks". Ford did not pay for it. Other problems include hesitant starting, hesitant blower motor, rear window molding that cracked in the cold, buzzing speakers, and a/c "brown outs". I would not sell this vehicle to anyone I know (as I've done with all my past vehicles). I just don't see it holding up much longer.

This is the second Explorer DH & I bought. The first was a 2000 that was nice but nothing to brag about. When Ford redesigned the Explorer for 2002 I fell in love. I love the NBX model because it has a fun feel. It seems everywhere you turn someone has an Explorer and it was nice to buy one with some difference; however the roof rack does weigh down the truck. The truck itself drives beautifully (much better handling than the 2000) and the third row seat has come in handy plenty of times. We also have a very dark charcoal color cleanable interior on the truck which I absolutely love. I hate light color interiors which show so much wear and tear and the dark interior on the seats and carpet helps.

I just bought a 2005 Mercedes Benz ML 350. It has been a total piece of junk. My 2003 Explorer has 125,000 miles now. Recently, my wife and I had to drive both SUV's from Illinois to Florida. We found ourselves fighting over who was going to get to drive the Explorer. Neither of us wanted the Mercedes. That says a lot for the Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer. The new Benz has been in the shop 3 times more than the 125,000 mile Ford.

I've owned six different trucks in the past 15 years from a 1990 Chevy Blazer to a 1992 Toyota 4Runner, a 1995 and 1997 Ford Explorer and a few pickup trucks in between, but this one crushes them all. Awesome styling inside and out, very well thought out ergonomics. Fits me (6 feet 2 inches) and my wife (5 feet 6 inches) equally well. Very comfortable on long trips, very quiet on the highway, good power (with the 4.6L) for hauling a heavy load. Second row Captains chairs and third row power fold-down seats are clutch with three kids and gear.

The vehicle has an excellent ride. Friends who ride in the vehicle are surprised at the level of comfort. I have not taken the vehicle off road many times, but I am very satisfied with the off road capabilities. Highway fuel economy is better than 20 miles per gallon. City mileage is pretty good. I would recommend the Explorer to anyone considering a mid-sized sport utility vehicle.

This SUV is great. I love the V8's low end torque that rivals the venerable 5.0, but blows it away over 3000 RPM. Gas mileage is tolerable considering the V8, those of you that want 30 MPG should be buying cars anyway. 4 LO is very strong. This is my 5th Ford and I feel like I'm driving a luxury vehicle. I test drove a 4Runner, Durango, TrailBlazer, and a Pathfinder - they don't even compare. Between the Toyota's cheesy {luxury} interior and fake V8, Durango's terrible build quality, TrailBlazer's look and performance, I was surprised at the Explorer. I am a truck guy and this was my first SUV. Overall it was a great buy.

I was skeptical about purchasing a Ford in general. I reseached actual people reviews and local mechanics before I made my decision. Besides brake rotors and pads this vehicle is very worthy of it's Editors Choice Award. I would advise converting to synthetic oil immediatly as to save $$$ in a big way. I have travelled through 16 different states and logged over 41k miles in less than 2.5yrs. I use this vehicle in NYC everyday yes NYC! Overall I can't say enough. Not 1 trip to the dealer yet. Take care of it and it will in return take care of you and your family safely.

This is my third Explorer (54000 mi), 2nd Eddie Bauer, car is great for about 40,000 miles and then look out. Just replaced the rear end clutch pack, at my 50% expense ($279). Now they want to put a new transfer case ($1500) and rear wheel bearings ($769). It's frustrating, but the car's drivetrain is just not strong enough. I'm just gonna get rid of the car. Well built otherwise, but if the car whines and grinds, you're gonna be unhappy.

I bought my Eddie Bauer 4.6L Explorer new and have been the vehicle's only owner. The engine is powerful. The vehicle is roomy, comfortable and stylish. However, reliability has been horrible. The 4X4 and transmission especially have been consistent problems. Ford has been unresponsive. Ford replaced the 4X4 transfer case to correct a defect, but only after being directed to do so by an arbitration board. The differential failed catastrophically after 45,000 miles, posing a safety hazard and necessitating a >$1000 repair. Ford took no responsibility. For a vehicle that cost $40,000, it has been a major disappointment.

I've had my Explorer Eddie Bauer for 4 months. Great driving and great looking SUV but now I know why some call it the "Exploder". Lot of problems, taken care of at no cost to me under warranty (thank heavens for the extended warranty), but it doesn't give me a good impression of long term durability: Power seat track repair, cruise control switch, rear axle clutch pack replaced, complete rear differential and ring/pinion gear replaced (twice), leaking taillight (Ford refused to fix but dealer handled it.)

This will be the first and last American made car I ever buy. After 13 years of driving Japanese vehicles and having excellent performance and reliability I decided to buy an American made SUV. The Ford Explorer may be the #1 selling SUV but I have spent $4k in repairs after owning the car only 6 months. Besides having low quality rotors that were not able to be turned, the transmission had to be rebuilt. Ford would offer nothing to me even though the SUV is only 2 years old (barely out of warranty). From now on I will stick to Honda, Nissan, and Toyota.

For all those who are looking to buy a 2003, this is a quality SUV. The mileage isn't great, but if you're in the market for an mid-sized SUV, you know what you're getting into. I bought my Explorer used and it was kept very well. It has no history of any repairs in its first 46,000 miles. The tires were replaced at 20,000 and it had frequent detailing. I bought a gem and I love it.

I've had my Eddie Bauer Explorer for about 2 weeks, purchased used with 24,000 miles. Very nice vehicle. Mainly purchased for towing capacity and winter driveability but it's also fine as an everyday vehicle. Ride is rather "trucklike" as you would expect for a vehicle that can pull 5400 pounds, but it's manageable and gas mileage is passable (low 20s overall) and visibility is great. 4.0 V6 is smooth and feels more powerful than its 210HP. The 5 speed auto transmission is slick.

Purchased new with massive rebates; was looking for an '04 but found this black beauty and had to have it. Was comparing to Jeep Grand Cherokee, but preferred the Explorer style. Unfortunately, I had to find one without the sunroof so my head would not hit the roof (I'm under 6 foot!). The extra $995 for the Centennial option may not have been worth it, but it does make people look twice at this high-contrast vehicle.

First of all do not buy Ford brand vehicles; Mercury is a way better bet. The interior of this vehicle is very uncomfortable with the nylon cactus seats, and it hurts with shorts on, Second the flex fuel v6 stinks with gas mileage and power, third the trim is very cheap; it has black handles on a silver truck and all black trim - my 1992 Sable looked better than this truck.

This is the 4th Explorer that I've owned in the last 10 years. Unfortunately, it has been the most problematic. Although a far cry from "lemon status," problems have been a nuisance, nonetheless. Ford has done a good job in this redesign when comparing the old school Explorers. Unfortunately, the resale value is almost insulting since so many have been sold. I probably would consider another Explorer when the next redesign occurs for the 2006 model year, but I am strongly looking at the Toyota 4Runner. The 4Runner appears to have substantially better resale value and substance.

Had a good experience with 96 Explorer V6. Really like the way the new design style and the 4.6L V8 engine. Too many trips to the dealership though to fix warranty problems - A/C system failed, driver side heat blows cold air, airbag light on, transmission hesitation, now the lift gate recall. Ford quality has decreased, I had no problems with the '96. This is the 3rd Ford I've purchased since '96 but due to warranty problems this will be my last. What problems will reoccur once 36k warranty runs out? I can't be any worse off trying another brand next time.

For the price of the vehicle ford can put a $10 cylinder in there not going to loose money. I have also had problems with the rear winshield. I was very happy to purchase this vehicle, but the longer I drove it, the more little things would come up to irk me. Ergonomics of the dashboard are not the best, layout of the components is poorly thought out. Engine is loud, sounds like a truck (which it essentially is, but it could have been made quieter for a passenger vehicle). Cheap parts (paint, interior). I put a mountain bike in back and ended up scratching the heck out of the interior and ripping the rubber seal around the door. Otherwise, the interior is very roomy, comfortable ride, good outside looks, overall I'm satisfied, but not thrilled.

My first Ford, My first American Car, and My first Truck. Overall I'm very happy with this vehicle, but I find myself looking for excuses to take my wife's car out for a spin. Although I appreciate the versatility and truck- like capabilities of the Explorer I might have been happier in a sport wagon like an A6 Avant, Passat or Subaru Outback. At 38k miles, it's never been back to the dealer. I change the oil myself since noone will put in the recommended 5-20 it calls for. Tires look like they'll last another 15-20k. Don't by the V-6. The V-8 is only slightly more and get's virtually the same mpg and even the V-8 is under- powered.

We've owned several Explorers in the past and have owned just about every model that Ford makes other than a Town Car and Ranger Truck...We love our Eddie Bauer SUV...Other than the gas mileage is not the best(knew that when purchased though:)) I like being able to go in the winter time on the snow and ice and it has a very comfortable ride. I feel very secure with my child in the back seat of this vehicle.

The Ford Eddie Bauer could be a better SUV, Its a boxy truck and just doesnt seem very luxurious, like you would hope for the money and eddie bauer name, light interior is really bad if you have kids, leather seats and light carpeting end up dirty quick, The dealership I worked with and Ford company are great, they both send me little perks and gift certificates to the eddie Bauer stores, but as for the truck I am really not impressed. There is some rear sliding in winter. I also have had problems with the memory seats forgetting the memory, and it feels and sounds like it wants to take off when you braking at a red light on on a decline of a hill.

Purchased 2003 Ford Explorer XLS new at Courtesy Ford...Got a great deal including $3000 rebate..Driveability, reliability, and ergonomically, it is first rate. It has good acceleration and gas mileage; averaging about 18-19 MPG with 89 Octance..Even tho 87 is recommended. It is a fun car and a hoot to drive..Great value in the field of SUV's--bar none...

This is my wife's first SUV and she loves it. We looked at many others, but for the price, we couldn't beat the Explorer. The Automatic 4WD works seamlessly on ice, and the leather seats are great for long drives. We went without the 3rd row seat, and boy, are we glad we did. Without kids, we would much rather have the storage space. Our only complaint so far is the fuel door location. Drivers side would be nice. Also a handle for closing the tailgate would come in handy...especially for shorter people.

We bought the Explorer for its 4WD capabilities, but we were surprised how nice it is to drive around town. It is great for driving in town and short errands. We've taken it on the highway a few times, and like it on the highway. It is great in the snow.

I like the fact that seven people can fit comfortably. I like the overall exterior design. I love the built-in tether strap restaints. The interior could use some work. Easier steering wheel tilting to make getting in and out easier would be nice. Third row could use a little more foot room. The seats are all very deep. I am 5'3" and I find it very difficult to make myself comfortable in the driver's seat. My back hurts whenever I travel long distances. And what happened to storage area!? I can just fit in my groceries.

This is my 1st new trcuk so I am not a great judge of new vehicles. I am very happy with the size of the vehicle, it has plenty of storage and with the NBX rack and net on the top you can just throw your Christmas tree up there and head home. I love the upright seating and view of the road, and the look of the 17 inch wheels and tires add to my positive review.

I had a 1996 EB which I absolutely loved. It had every amenity I needed and none that I didn't. At 160,000 miles and counting I decided to trade it for a 2003. Big disappointment. Granted I went from an EB to an XLT but the interior looks really cheap. The tires are loud and the third row seats are a huge waste of cargo space. Mileage is a joke at nearly $60/week. Mostly though there are huge blind spots that require you to drive well using only your mirrors. I'm already looking to trade it in. Last but not least who thought of moving the gas tank to the passenger side. Obviously someone without children. Big safety issue.

I have owned this vehicle for 1 year covering 20000miles. This SUV is comfortable to drive and has a great turning circle which makes it easy to get in and out of tight spots. My wife loves the adjustable pedals and the sound system. My wife and I tested 4runner, pathfinder, Envoy and Passport but liked the Explorer best.

I bought an XLT 4wd with the V8 and Sport exterior package, replacing my 97 Explorer. The new one is improved in every way. I was leaning toward a new 4Runner until I drove the Ford. Glad I did. The '03 Explorer has a very smooth ride and accelleration. The handling feels solid and tight, and the fit and finish are solid. In my opinion, the quality is now comparable to Toyota and Nissan. It feels larger than my 96 Explorer. I couldn't be happier with it.

I absolutely love my new Explorer. I traded in my Toyota Highlander in for it. Prior to owning Highlander I owned a 2002 EB Expedition. I traded for better gas mileage. The biggest mistake, The Highlander was so uncomfortable to drive I had to ditch it with only 3700 miles on it! The Explorer has comfort that cannot compare! I love my FORDS! I will never buy a foreign again! I have never had any problem with FORD SUV's or Super Duty trucks!

We love the ride and the handling of our 2003 Explorer XLT 4WD. It pulls our boat extremely well, and has great low-end torque at the ramp. The power driver seat is very adjustable, and we like the lumbar support adjustments. The vehicle feels very steady and solid. My wife loves it. The turning radius is hard to believe. If you test drive one, be sure to do a slow 360 with the wheel to the post, you will be shocked!

Nice riding SUV, very roomy compared to others in class. Handles very well and love the independent rear suspension. V-8 has good power, with lots of V-8 noise on acceleration. Transmission tends to bang when slowing to a stop when going downhill (tries to upshift). Too many rattles, the doors and entire cargo area seem to rattle. Will take to dealer soon, perhaps hatch is rattling. If it did not rattle so much, I would recommend. Runs on reg gas.

I love my 2003 Ford Explorer. Its a very safe vehicle with great power. But the gas mileage is horrendous. Right now I am lucky to be getting 15 MPG on the highway. I travel over a mountain everyday so that probably takes some of the fuel, but its also Hawaii...Aloha

The 2003 Limited is great...the ride, increase in size (albeit minimal), handling, quietness, power and options (DVD entertainment system, third row seating, rear AC and the roll over safety canopy air bags) are outstanding and comforting to have. I purchased the new 2003 Limited with the monochromatic ceramic white tri-coat metalic paint, which sort of sparkles in direct sunlight and parchment leather interior. I love the look...not to mention the 17" chrome wheels. I have received a lot of complements from friends and strangers alike. Ford did a great job.

I traded in my '98 Rodeo for this truck, and I am glad I did. The exporer has more than enough room. Although I will rarely use it, I love having the third row seating. I wish that I would have gotten the V8. The V6 is fine, but I would like the V8. The Rodeo had 4wheel drive. My expo doesn't, hope That I am not going to need it. But this is my wife's truck and she loves it.

The EB feels very comfortable...well built vehicle. The acceleration is surprisingly strong for a V6. The stereo/air control on the steering wheel is a plus. My only two complaints are the electronic driver seat...there is a little play in the chair. It's noticiable when you stop and accelerate. Also, there is a whine noise in the rear when the vehicle's speed is at 55-60mph.

Traded in our mitsubishi montero for the explorer and the difference is amazing. 4 wheel independent suspension gives you a much improved ride. Very stable on the road. Performance is good with the V-6 a little noisey at times. The build quality is excellent. Allready have 10,000 miles on it since buying it in June. No problems at all. My only complaint is the fuel economy, it could be better. One would thimk with a 5- speed auto it would be better. I also own 4 f-350 p/u with the diseal engines and they get better mileage. But overall in it's price category I find it as a value that is hard to beat.

Recently I upgraded to a Ford Explorer Xlt Sport from a 2000 Mustang. I have two highschool teens and the Mustang just wasn't big enough for thier busy life style. Just was never enough room for friends. We live in the Bay area and I can't begin to tell you how much fun we've had in the sporty Explorer.Sunsets are fun you can pop the back open & sit & see everything. It,s alot more comfortable with the leather bucket seats with the warmers riding to Reno too. It's definately a great family choice. It costs more in gas but it dosen't even bother me because it's just such a great fit for the whole family.

I have owned an Explorer every two years, since 1994. As well as two Expaditions. The 2003's (we own two EB's) are light years away from the 01. However, there are some really silly thing's Ford keep leaving out of their flag ship. One being a lockable gas door with inside relese. And the other being an aotomatic antenna. Also, Ford has and continues to put out books with nice goodies you can get for your cars & trucks. But when it comes to the Explorer, many times you find out that what they promote as nice thing's you can get, do not and never will be made.

This is a great SUV. I have owned several explorers over the years and use this vehicle for both commuting and significant off road driving during hunting trips. This vehicle has been tested in some very muddy, slippery and uneven terrain off road and comes through like a shining star. It's by far the best SUV for people who want to utilize the "utility" in sport utility vehicles. I have the V8 powered eddie bauer version. It won't win any drag races but delivers smooth, powerful accelleration and has more than enough power and low end torque for driving around town, on the highway, off road and towing a trailer.

I love my Toyota Avolon but my wife has the worst 4 year old For Explorer. Ford has a bad everyting. Except while where here in Hollywood Beach, Florida it is good in the snow from when we drove it to Coldorado and it broke down 15 minutes north of us. We came back down with a rental and drove the Avolon which now has over 73000 miles on it and is brand new. The Ford is also brand new too. Our Honda Accord lasted 26 years and our old Avolon lasted 17 years . The Accord is still working with 64 millon miles on it since I used to go from Spring Lake, New Jersey to New York City everyday. The Toyota had 74 thousand miles on it.

Great truck overall. I had a 95 Explorer, and it was time to replace it. GOing from the old pushrod 4.0 to the new 4.0 was an amazing difference..the old engine was too underpowered. The interior is well laid out, and the suspension gives a great ride with the independent rear. I didn't get the third row seat, so I have quite a bit more storage area in the back.

I looked at everything in the mid-sized range and came to a quick conclusion that Ford did it right with this SUV. It was close between this and the 4- Runner and I opted to save the 10K. Lots of space, great handling, good quality to driver controls, and a nice interior. This truck rides great and has plenty of power with the V6. Hopefully the reliability is good, I've been driving imports for the last 5 years and they weren't perfect either. Good job Ford- Drive it. It's durable, not wimpy like those crosssovers.

I bought my wife a 2003 XLT with the third row seat because I was tired of hearing about how she didn't really like our mini-van. So far we have only put about 4,000 miles on it. But, we are hard on our cars and this one feels like all our other Fords. Built to take it. I like the ride and how it handles. I would have rather had the V-8 but the power gain didn't seem worth the mileage loss. The V-6 pulls hard enough. I'm not a big fan of the 5 speed auto. It shifts a little too often and I almost always lock out the overdrive.

I had this car for about one year. It occured four times that I cannot start the car. I have to have the car towed to the dealership twice for reparing. First time, I called AAA to jump start the car. Second time, I have it towed to the sealership. It started when it got there, so they couldn't find anyting. Third time, the dealership found it caused by the bad starter and a short wire. Forth time, we saw smoke when we were driving. The dealer had to replace the whole cooling syste. I suggest that you should consider the extended warranty if you want to buy an Explorer.

Vehicle has 2800 miles now. At around 600 miles began awful whining noise from rear end at any speed over 30mph. Dealer states that "Ford is aware of the problem and trying to create a solution". Further, during conversation with the Regional Service Rep, it comes out that there are hundreds of complaints in his region for the same issue. Also, the vehicle averages 13mpg City and 14.5mpg Hwy. Isn't that a little low? Anyway, why doesn't the dealer make the buyer aware that there is a potentially irreparable problem with the Explorer? Because they simply can't stop selling one of the only three vehicles Ford builds that sells.

Overall, good, but could ge better. Road noise and fuel are bummers. Ride, comfort and performance are good but not great. Leather Seats are comfortable but power adjustments are too limited. I prefered the overhead display to the tiny in dash display of temperature and direction. Stearing wheel tilt adjustment could be better. I wish I had opted for the back-up scanner. Too much shifting while in cruise in small hill terrain.

Had a 1995 Eddie Bauer Explorer, put 122,000 miles on it with no major repairs or rust, sold it to a friend and he's got it over 175,000 miles now with no major problems. But I love the comfort of my 2003 because I don't feel as beat-up after driving 700 to 800 miles in one day, as I do a couple times a year. Much more stable on road especially at 70mph and above, and independent rear suspension gives it the handling characteristics of a luxury car and not a truck -- like the 1995 model. Seats more ergonomic, too -- no stiff legs after long driving stretches. Would buy another.

No, I don't ahve leather, no 6 cd stereo, no 50 way seats and no major extras, but it is brand new and I got a great lost leader deal at $18,300.

This is our third Explorer we have purchased. We also have owned three Ford trucks, ranging from the Ranger, F-150 and 250 Diesel. As we have owned Ford throughtout the years we have never had a problem with any of them. I guess we are a Ford family. I like my new Explorer and feel I will get excellent usage from it.When it is paid off it will be traded in on another Ford Product. There are a lot of features to choose from.

Purchased third row seating and find it comfortable even in such a short wheelbase vehicle. A fine value in a relative low priced truck.

Overall a very nice SUV. The extremely poor ride is the worst characteristic. Ample power is delivered by the V-6 but at the high cost of gas guzzling. The ride is high and the interior compartment very nice. The NBX package sports a nice rack on top and an interior that is almost indestructable. I would recommend as long a gas guzzling is not a concern. Oh, and if you have trouble climbing into vehicles this is not the auto for you. The off-road suspension and 17 inch wheels make it pretty high.

Best Explorer yet!

Our third Explorer,a 92(still have),99,and this 03( all Eddie Bauers). The 03 has more useable space, better mileage, handles & rides better, and is alot quicker. My 5'2" wife loves the larger size, as we looked at the Expedition and found it to be too big. The third seat is a blessing, and takes up -0- cargo space when folded down. Negatives: noisy tires, front end growl, a tranny that is slow to shift from reverse to drive, and rough idle. The rear window popped open as we were on the road, sometimes at speed. The rear door is WAY too heavy and difficult to handle. HELLO, anyone heard of aluminum?

Unhappy about small water leak. Dealership had it twice and can't detect leak. "no problem found" I was able to make it leak at home with garden hose, and the door at the top doesnt close tight enough. Why was I able to find the problem, and trained mechanics could'nt? They deny the problem because they don't want to be caught with something they can't fix within three or more tries and have to possibly give me a new car under the "lemon law'?

We purchased an XLT with the 4.0L V6 twom months ago. The only options we got were rear A/C and the third-row seat. The Explorer has a very smooth ride, compared to other SUVs, and we drove just about every mid-size SUV. It has plenty of power, a very smooth- shifting transmission, and is one of the most comfortable vehicles we have owned.

First Car. Glad I bought it.

My parent's both own Explorers(92 and 93) and I grew up using them and loving the car. When we went to the lots, this was the first vehicle we would hover around. After two weeks of searching, we found a great deal. I love the SUV, like the way it drives and love the significant improvements since the 199x models.

Found that the gas peddle was uncomfortable. I can't explain it but my 2001 Olds and 2001 Jeep never had this uncomfortable feeling. Can't seem to get into a comfortable position even with the power gas/brake and seat positioning??? The ride is great for a vehicle of this type. I required a V-8, classIV hitch and the side air bag curtian which I have. I'm averaging about 18.8 miles per gallon which I feel is good for this size vehicle. I asked the dealer to install daytime running lights to work in conjunction with the automatic headlights. Not done yet!

This is the first American made car that I've ever owned, and the first automatic that I've ever driven. I love this SUV!! Mine has the towing package, and it turns on a dime. The handling is superb, and I love the way it drives. My job requires me to be on the road somewhere new every 3 months, which means I'm usually driving for 10- 15 hours at a time. The Explorer is very comfortable, and the interior is well designed. I also love the space and the extra versatility the third row seat gives me. I would definitely purhase this SUV again. Great work!! Gives me faith in American automoblies again!!

Hands down the best vehicle I've owned. And I've had my fair share. Most currently this Explorer replaced my Jeep Grand Cherokee. I was talking to a fellow coworker and said this has to be the best car I've owned, the only fault I can find is that when I have the sunroof open and all the windows that the seatbelt for the center seating position in the second row slaps against the seat. Outside of that the Explorer is flawless in my book. By the way, better fuel economy then my 4.7 V-8 Jeep.

If you want a vehicle that's dependable, reliable, comfortable ride, and if you have grandchildren then this SUV is what you need. It's great for trip's because you have plenty of storage and the seat's are very comfortable. Because we have grandchildren we opted for fabric seat's and with the fabric protector spill's aren't a problem. The grandchildren like it when they're together because they aren't crowded. They can even get in the very back seat from either side of the car.

I really enjoy my 2003 Limited Explorer. It rides smooth but the inside noise level could be diminished. The 6 CD changer is wonderful. It looks good from the outside and the inside is very plush, with the leather interior. Fuel economy is good depending on your rate of travel. I especially love the moon-roof. Also, it doesn't have a locking gas cap. This is very important to me. That needs to be a definite upgrade with future models. I have been very pleased with everything other than the inside noise level.

One month old with 1300 miles: 1) rear axle started "singing" (LOUD) between 45 mph and 70 mph at around 250 miles; 2) transmission doesn't always know when to shift, especially when warmed up and frequently hesitates to downshift for 3-4 seconds when trying to pass; 3) when warm the engine sometimes doesn't have much power when accelerating from a stop but might be ok after the next stop -- may be related to transmission problem; 4) the hard plastic, curved, one-piece gas pedal is junk! Haven't taken it to the dealer yet but probably will in the next week or so.

I bought this Explorer because my wife didn't like the F150 Supercrew I had. We traded the F150. I love the Explorer. With the V8, it roars down the road and responds immediately to any request for power. Sadly, it also sucks down gasoline like a thirsty horse in the desert. Our average MPG is about 12. Even my wife can't get over 15 with her delicate driving. If you don't pull a trailer and don't have the need to embarass 4 cylinder "sport" coupes at stoplights, opt for the 6 cylinder version.

This is my third Explorer (we lease) and by far the best one, so far. I have never had any major problems with any of them. I really like the Eddie Bauer with the "extras", truly worth the extra cost. It's a much smoother ride compared to our 1996 & 1999 Explorers (thank you) and the interior is larger which is always a plus when you need it.

I often drive in an area that routinely receives a 3 ft dump of snow and is low the the plow list. I have never been stranded. I feel extremely safe as I am always aware of tire pressure, etc. I can feel a low tire pressure situation (from a puncture) in the way the car handles and I deal with it immediatly. I am a 50 year old female enjoying outdoor activities on weekends but when I return to "Corporate America" Monday morning, the nice appointments fit into the 5 star environment as well.

This SUV is wonderful. When we are towing our boat, I just take my foot off of the brake and it starts moving, this is how much power this thing has. I have one with a V8 and towing package, and we live in Florida, and it has never come close to ever overheating even while towing an 8 thousand pound boat. It is also extremely comfortable on the inside, and roomy as well. And I love the audio system. Couldn't ask for more in any SUV, and it's a lot cheaper than most of them, yet more durable, reliable and comfortable.

Disappointed:( After owning a '97 Expedition and buying this Explorer, I regret the decision. The vehicle is excessively noisy on the highway...mainly wind noise. Can't even hear the passengers in the back seat !!! I do like everythng else about the vehicle and get great gas mileage (23 MPG Highway / 16 MPG City). I don't find the interior quality poor, just economically made. There certainly aren't any over abundance of bells & whistles on the vehicle.

This vehicle is average at best. I was much happier with my 2001 Expedition. Fit and Finish are marginal. I've had it back to the dealer several times to fix outside trim and interior flaws. Mileage is poor(14-15 Mpg avg.)and the transmission shifts very rough. It clunks when shifting into "D" Drive and between 2nd and 3rd gear. Dealer says this is normal, but I don't buy it. It seems like other consumers are experiencing the same symptoms. After this SUV I will go back to Japanese Mfg. for good. They are consistantly better quality, perform better, and hold their value much better. Sorry Ford.

Change is good, mostly.

This is my 3rd explorer since 1998 and I'm very pleased with my limited. The improved ride is less bouncy, dual zone climate control works great and the car is a pleasure to drive. The car is heavy and feels substantial but is very easy to control and makes light work of any task you put it to. I moved an entire house full of furniture (including fridge) in an Explorer and I can't recommend them enough.

If you are going to buy one, buy it now. With the rebates and slow sales, you can get a great price. We drove off at 8k under MSRP (about 6k below invoice). If you are going to buy the XLT, definately look into the Sport. We were looking at the NBX, but decided it was too utilitarian.

When looking to replace our c.1998 Explorer we test drove several vehicles, and looked at many more. We hadn't originally wanted another Explorer but a weekend test drive with it changed our minds. It drives well - - more like a truck then a car, but that was expected. What was unexpected was how it well it road and how precisely it handled. I would also argue that the 210 HP the V6 puts out is more than enough and had plenty of get-up-and-go power. And, though mostly unchanged from the 2002 models, the 2003 models looked a little more refined and finished look on the inside. Even the silver metallic door and dash inserts look good.

4 weeks into this. Day2 engine stumbling and missing upon engine start. After two visits = computer reprogram (we had to insist). Day8 the pass-door low trim split-off at the front & dealer says door re-alignment is needed when the new panel comes in. Day20, dual mode AC only blows cold air on pass side/warm air on driver side. Quality & Ford seem to have gone separate ways. The dealer has been poor itself with service being apathetic at best (had to resort to lemon law just to get action). Our new SUV which seems to be falling apart faster than we can drive it, ensures we will never buy a Ford product again.

Overall I'm pleased with my new Explorer. The only complaint I have it that at 9,500 miles it developed a rattle in the dash board behind and to the right of the radio. I plan on taking it back to the dealer for repar, however, I'm afraid that they may make it worse. The truck is sharp looking and I like the ride and handling compared to the 01 Jeep Grand Cherokee I had before this purchase. Now at 11,500 miles I'm averaging 17.5 miles per gallon.

The cargo room is plenty for caring any of the various things you would need to haul around.

Had the NBX for just a couple of months when we took a "shortcut" home; that is, almost 50 miles of a deeply rutted muddy road in El Malpais National Monument in New Mexico in mid- February. I did not think we were going to make it, but we did. The locals thought we were crazy as most folks drive on the road in the early morning when it is frozen over and hard. The only drawback is you have to be careful to clean all the mud off the wheels or they become unbalanced at high speeds (over 60 mph). My wife and kids love the car - high visibility, lots of rooms, lots of storage, and it looks good (Mineral Gray).

We had to decide between the Explorer and Honda Pilot. Such a close race - nearly identical cars. The Explorer won for two reasons - additional options (Eddie Bauer) and dealership support/concern/friendliness. Ford matched the cost of the Pilot so we couldn't refuse. The two vehicles were so close and the Explorer has a conventional spare tire, extra room in the third seat for the kids feet, moon roof, 6 disc CD changer, dual function hatch and two tone paint. Even with 30HP less than the Pilot, it has the same acceleration numbers and better towing capacity.

I have now put on 1500 miles on my Explorer since mid February and have LOVED every mile. I just returned from a weekend in Joshua Tree and Naza- Borrego. The Explorer performed flawlessly on the 4X4 trails in Joshua Tree. The 4X4 Auto mode worked awesome, didn't ever need to put it in fulltime 4X4. The ride was supurb on the washboard trails and the suspension ate up all the bumps. The engine performs well in all aspects. (If I had anything to tow I would upgrade to the V8.) Ford did a great job with this redesign and I am quite pleased with everything to date.

Bought in November and it runs great. Ford service is excellent (in my experience). The 4.6L V8 is very powerful, but you can almost see the gas gauge moving. Smooth ride compared to other trucks and SUVs I've driven before...even with the tougher suspension of the off-road pkg. If you can find it, I highly recommend the traction control system. It really comes in handy in wet, icy, or snowy conditions. The interior needs some work...leather seats only on 1st two rows, and appears only to be on the seats, not on door trim. The dashboard computer is great...tells you gas mileage, miles till empty, oil life remaining, and other engine status.

I really enjoy the smooth, quiet power of the V8. All the EB features are very nice and worth it IMO. At least try one before getting an XLT. So far, gas mileage has been about 16 mpg city and 19 hwy. Only problem (if you call it that) is a slight rattle in the tailgate when going over large bumps.

This is my third Explorer purchased in the last seven years. Although I have only had my 2002 Explorer XLT V8 for six months, it has been trouble free. My last two Explorers have been relatively trouble free. I really enjoy the feel of the road with the new Explorer. It feels stable and comfortable. There is very little road noise. The Trailblazer just couldn't give the same feel, as the suspension felt too sloppy. I would definitely buy another Explorer.

I'm coming off of a 2dr Sport and was close to buying another one but I'm glad that I went with the 4dr instead. The ride in the new explorer is unbelievable compared to it's predecessors due to the independent rear suspension. They also added larger brakes, this was a much needed improvement. The interior is kind of chinsey, especially the cloth seats...I think they used "Plether". The exterior is sharp. The radio is decent also. Bad weather handling is very good with the addition of the Michelin tires. Overall, I would seriously consider this car if you are looking for a roomy, sure footed, SUV.

The only requirements I had when buying this truck was the V-8 and trailer towing package. I specifically did not want the 3rd row seats as it took a samll amount of cargo space and added to the weight of the vehicle. Towing well over 4000# with this vechicle is effortless (I sometimes forget I'm towing). It's ride and handling are superb (ride especially). In mixed/city driving I get around 16 mpg (4.6L V8). Overall I could not be happier with the truck.

the 4.0l v-6 with the 3.73 axle and tow pkg is ok, but in elevation it tends to down shift too frequently for my tastes. Fortunately, i was on vacation and usually don't drive in hilly terrain. Still, in hindsight, i would have bought the 4.6l v-8 for the little extra $ and little difference in gas mileage.

Fun to drive and lots of room. Gas mileage averages about 16 with the V8 and I am happy with that concidering the power. Handling is improved over the 2000 Explorer I had due to the suspension I am sure. Just an overall improvment in design and conviencience. Took a little while to get use to the controls but are 2nd nature now. Thanks Ford for the best SUV yet! and I drove them all!

Have always owned Japenese vehicles, however full credit to Ford, the Explorer is very competitive. V8 is hard on gas, but that is to be expected. Had the DVD system and sunroof put in and I now enjoy listening to Scooby Doo vs. a screaming 16 month old that hates her car seat. To all the families out their, "the DVD is worth the cost." Have the 17 inch BF Goodrich tires on - tire noise intrudes into the cabin. A purchaser may want to consider less aggressive tires. However despite the noise, the Explorer handles very well on snow and ice and I am sure the tires have something to do with that.

I jumped 8 years in technology when I purchased my new truck and FORD made the 2003 Explorer a dream to own. I've had my Limited edition for 2 months now and it still gives me goose bumps each time I drive it. I had a 1994 Explorer XLT and going to the 2003 I was just amazed at the changes and handling charactistics this new truck had plus, the impressive speed this new V8 can do. I have friends that have ML320's, Honda MDX and Chev Trailblazers and the 2003 Explorer is right up there with them in some cases leading the pack with the new safety features, roominess and the advance tracking system.

I like the design and the included running boards on the sport option package. The 17" wheels look much better, along with the two-tone paint. I bought this mostly for the 3rd row - there was more legroom than I thought, but the floor raises where the spare is located under the truck, so your feet are always on a bump.

After narrowing my choice of new a SUV to the Envoy and Explorer, I finally went with the Explorer based on the numerous (+)reports on the and not so good reports on the Envoy. One last drive of both clinched it for the Explorer even though I wasn't thrilled with the styling and trim. I was suprised when I got my new 2003 limited and saw the many up-grades to trim (the dash now has a "rich" looking wood trim, new gauges, etc). After 2 Jeeps I must say the ride is very nice, handling is good.

I recently purchased a 2002 Explorer XLT and it's a terrific automobile. It's quiet, has smooth aceleration and looks great. I purchased a third seat which is a great advantage for a mid- size SUV. The new Explorer should ensure that Explorer brand continues to do well.

Ford could have called this a different SUV and passed. I traded in my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee which had served me well but i thought it was too small and wanted a little bit bigger. I looked at 4runner and pathfinder and i could'nt decide which one to choose...until i test drove the explorer. Believe me i was never a ford admirer. In fact i never even thought of buying one. But this new explorer changed all that. Ford came up with an SUV that's safe, efficient and fun to drive. Please do some research and find out why this EXplorer should'nt be overlooked.

I'm not the owner, but drove this company vehicle 3500 miles in a week. Had good ride quality considering 4wd. Glove compartment, storage areas and cup holders were sized and placed well. 4.0 V6 gave peppy performance, although the 5spd auto had to shift often to keep the engine in the power band. Audio and other controls were well placed except for rear-wipers and door handles Base non-power cloth seats were as horrible as anything I have EVER had to sit in. My '81 Chevette seats were better. Padding/support was non- existant. My rear end was sore after 20 miles, and it didn't get better.

This one definitely kicks. Mine had a punchy V8 which is very reliable when overtaking or merging lanes. Rides very smooth like a car. A striking appearance especially the front silver grille, combined with the boxy look of the front. At night, the dashboard looks like the control panel of a jetliner - control buttons here and there. The automatic climate control is truly versatile - it does all 4 you including defogging the windows. Steering is very responsive. Overall performance is excellent in all areas and conditions - thanks to its front AND rear independent suspensions.

Brand new explorder-EB -> Good looking and smooth acceleration -> Having 3rd row seat is good but, when folded, it doesn't go flat -> When seats are folded, you'll need cargo organizer. There are a lot of small holes. -> Expect a few trips to dealer to get the car manufacturing done. They don't seem to finish it at the factory.

I have owned this particular vehicle for only several months, but I am very impressed with the way this vehicle handles and accelerates even though it has the 6 cyl engine. Steering is very good for a "truck", and the brakes are outstanding also. Gas mileage has improved from about 15mpg to between 18 to 20 mpg. On a recent 375 mile trip to maine the seats remained supportive and on center tracking was very good. The optional 3rd row seating stows away very nicely allowing plenty of versatility.

We love our Eddie Bauer Explorer! The styling of the body and interior is excellent. The interior is extremely comfortable and spacious. Our previous vehical was a Jeep Grand Cherokee which we decided to trade in when the rear end went after only 60,000 miles as well as other problems. The duel climate control is a blessing and the 6 disc indash CD/stereo has tremendous sound. The controls on the steering wheel are an added bonus and simplify things while driving. Gas milage could be better (average 14 back roads and 19 highway) but what do you expect with a V8. Ford's done a good job with the redesigned 2002 Explorer.

Nice, roomy vehicle that probably rides better than previous model, but still is much stiffer than a car. Front row seating is comfortable and second row is OK for trips. 3rd row is only for kids and maybe short trips by willing adults. Around town gas mileage with V-8 is pretty sorry; I get 13 mpg with combined street and freeway rides. Highway mileage seems to be about 19 mpg. Eddie Bauer model is pretty loaded with options, but interior appearance is not very "upper class" - lots of plastic. Radio/CD player has good sound (in Eddie Bauer upgrade model). No mechanical problems, except driver's side seat heater quit after 3 weeks (not a big deal in Houston).

I do not own the Explorer I am rating, it is my friends. I have driven it, and am impressed with the 4.6L V8's power. I have also ridden in the third row, and it is rather well designed. At 6'1", I was suprised at the room I had back there. The seat seemed to be slightly angled, to prevent knees from hitting the back seat, and I rather enjoyed the somewhat reclined position. Overall, I was and still am rather impressed. I will be looking for a new vehicle soon, and the Explorer/Mountaineer tops my list.

The 2002 Ford Explorer Limited is great improvement over it's earlier incarnations mostly because of the independent rear suspension which has improved the ride of this class of Ford vehicle imensely. The total redesign of the Explorer was long overdue and needed in order for this very popular model to compete with all the new SUVs that have flooded the market. Ford definitely has designed a winner in this vehicle.
