Its like this, no one does it like the Germans do. Remember that. This car has a soul. It will ask for what it needs. And you better cough it up or it will betray you. Off with the bad first. Scheduled matinence is here to help you. Follow it to 120k than worry about the big stuff down the road. If you actually do what the people who engineered this car intend for you to do, it never fails, and even the wear you get just adds character to the car. It eats brakes, and at 4750 lbs, no one is sure why anyone is surprised by this. On a positive note, every time you get in, youl want to rub your shiny VW emblem and you will grin like an idiot when you snap out your switch key and gracefully start up in one fluid motion. Underway, the Passat is a lock and follow machine. Not car. Machine. I have never owned a car that spoke to my soul like a VW. When you walk away, you will look back as the small horn blips when you lock it. You may find yourself showing off the fact your windows go up and down without getting in the car, and you can turn the stereo on while the car is off. When you have the Monsoon audio system cranked around 80% or so with a new-to-you CD of your favorate music in the trunks changer, you find that vibes flow in the wake you cut through the air. Your friends will want to ride with you. You will walk outside at 3am to smoke a cigarette and watch the gleam of orange light from the streetlamp reflecting off your sharp 6-spoke allow wheels. If you see that Passat as ugly, simple, or basic, great. You have never owned a Passat. This car is art. And if you see it as such you will understand why people own these cars. This is not a race car. This is not a off roading car. in fact, its not even a car built for being really great at any one thing. But that in and of itself is exactly why you should buy one. VW just made something...that's really good at just being a car. And there is something to be said for that.

Owned a 2003 Skoda Octavia in Germany was a fun car. Bought the closes thing to it in the US. the 1.8L is fun and great on MPG! I get better mileage then the EPA rating best i got was 40MPG on a road trip! Passat has great styling i think and rides nice really luxurious for what it is. Previous owner did all the differed maintenance cv axels, fuel pump, valve cover gaskets, heater core, timing belt, water pump etc... Currently has 180,000 mile on it and I really like the car, I will drive the wheels off of this car! Great on snow with regular tires. Only thing wrong is the trans makes a LOUD slam noise when downshifts when exiting the interstate, when that goes Ill buy something else.

First of all. I got the GLX v6 4motion I bought this car when it had 110,000 miles on it. Sounds crazy, but I bought it for 5k. The carfax showed that the previous owner had already taken care of the major maintenance stuff that starts popping up at around 80k. I can imagine, if I had owned the car during that time period I would have thought it was the worst car in the world. But I didn't. All I had to do was normal maintenance stuff. I brought it up to 210k miles and was still driving like new. So fun around corners and handled snow really well. Until... I was going to school and the street was flooded. Yaris and cruze made it through, Passat died. I really will miss this car.

I bought this car with about 20000 miles at less than a year old for $15500. I'm at 138000 with a private party value of $4500, it's been going up in value the past 3 years! An absolute joy to drive with the 4 cyl turbo and 34mpg. It seems to be a timeless styling blck/blck shines nicely. Synthetic only!! can't stress that enough and use the VW coolant. everyday garages will mess this car up like a bad hangover. I found an old VW specialized mechanic, won't let any other cars in the garage and has kept it running well for reasonable $. Replaced, timing belt/water pump at 80k, both frnt window regulators, 3 sets of tires/brakes, 2CV joints, 1 set of rotors,fuel pump at 136k due to ethanol

This is my second Passat wagon - I'm trying to sell it. I have no idea why I decided to subject myself to another used VW after my experience with the first one. Don't get me wrong - new/nearly new (3-4 years old) VWs are great cars; they're reliable, luxurious..etc. But after they hit the 5 year mark, they go to hell. I heard a saying once that a check engine light is a beacon to let you know you're driving a VW, and that certainly rings true. It's always on and always very expensive to fix. The car does feel very solid and is good in the snow. The engine is slow to accelerate and gets mediocre gas mileage.

First let me say, I have NO complaints about the 1.8 Turbo 4-cylinder engine. It has been a wonderful, reliable, engine. I have always used synthetic oil and its just been great. My only nitpicking would be that it "sounds" like a 4-cylinder when idling (sewing machine?). Next: The Aisin automatic transmission. WOW!. About a year ago, the car (long story short) got bottomed out and the transmission got slammed into the road. I didn't think anything of it as it continued to work fine. When I took it for servicing much later on, the mechanic discovered that the transmission casing was cracked and like half of the fluid was gone! The transmission still worked fine! (but i did replace it).

I do not know why so many people have had bad luck with this car. bought it at just under 100k miles, put on about 85k in the past 4 years (i drive alot of cross country for my work). Made sure to do a carfax and got it checked by my mech before i signed anything. In my case, the car was religiously taken in for maintenance every 4k miles to a VW dealer (one owner). Seems that the previous owner took care of the major "quwerks" the car had (water pump, cv, alt, vacuum hoses, fuel pump) since i bought it: tires (x1), brakes (x1), oil change (x5), injector service (x1), o2 sens (x1) the only thing annoying is that the dash just started showing 50% brightness, and heated seat went out, eh.

I love my passat's looks but sadly it ends there :( It drives like a dream when it is not in the shop. If I can say one thing it would be to find a mechanic who knows something about a VW. That has really been my problem. It has been one expensive thing after another but I am hoping now that I have got all the bugs out it will take me on down the road. I did find a good mechanic finally but seriously this thing has had issues at only 80K that cars with 200K don't even see. Motor mounts, oil pressure problems, AC problems, I have replaced every single hose on the thing some even twice and I keep up on the service faithfully. There is a reason rich people own these cars!

Initially by spending all the money on repairs at stealership, i thought it is bad car. But once i started doing by my own with help from www.passatworld.com, not expensive. Or get information from the above website and find a trusted cheap mechanic. If you follow the simple rules like 40W full synthetic oil every 5k, change ATF at every 60K (Castrol import ATF is fine - from AZ) clean combi valve once in 2 yr, will run longer than a Toyota or Honda. Once you cross 100k, gaskets, hoses, Fuel filter and Timing belt (at 80K). Overall reliable car, decent MPG and most importantly safe. Premium fuel is bad side and don't need to use OEM expensive parts. My car close to 100k going strong..

I bought this car thinking it would be a good way to save on gas and still able to haul my mountain bikes around and travel, was i wrong! To mention some of the problems... Tire went flat then the spare went flat, the glove box handle broke off, the knobs on the stereo came off, the alarm will go off at random times, the serpentine belt broke and fried the motor, gas cap door wouldn't open, the thermostat in cold weather sets off my check engine light, the hatch stopped opening, oh and to top it all off i have to put premium in the car which then makes it just as much much as my old SUV's to fill up. I have had an 88 Landcruiser and it ran better and was more reliable than this car!!!!!!!!!!

This car is great. Exceptional handling, acceleration and design. 4motion system is great in all weather, especially in my town where salt is not used and the roads become solid ice and snow from December until late March. About 110k miles, full synthetic oil and the engine (not exaggerating) sounds new. Only problems (as with all cars) AC leaks because I neglected to turn it on enough and tiny beginning of rust on one fender, but will be covered by 12 year rust warranty. Other than that zero mechanical problems, which may surprise some. I don't baby the car at all, but stay on top of it very well (oil, filters, etc.). Honestly, take care of this machine and it will take care of you.

I got my black Passat when I was a sophomore in high school. The thing I love most about VWs is the German prestige that comes with the car. Theres something about the way European cars carry themselves as they sail down the highway. I previously owned a 2000 VW Jetta that I absolutly loved. The Passat is technically a superior car, but I think I'll buy another Jetta in the future. If you are thinking of buying one with the turbocharged engine, you MUST MUST use fully synthetic oil and change it every 3 thousand miles.

This was and still is my first VW. I love the way it handles, even now at 133000 miles on the odo. Original clutch. Only issues were with ignition coils and radio(replaced under warranty years ago) and a power window regulator (last week). Last week, VW also replaced the trunk lid and remote trunk release -- there was a rust spot at one of the license plate lights and this moisture had caused the trunk release to malfunction. My dealer experience has always been excellent. Sure you pay more than for an independent, but the guys at Hunt Club VW (Ottawa Canada)understand the value of customer service. My next car will be a VW.

I love driving this car: it is so refined -- beautiful interior, wonderful road manners, responsive performance. Headlights stink, otherwise it's a joy to drive. But... I hate owning this car: despite putting extremely low mileage on the car and performing all scheduled maintenance on the dot, I've had and endless parade of extremely expensive problems. Engine leaking oil in FOUR places (three of them directly onto the catalytic converter, for maximum fire hazard), clogged heater core (no heat), transmission leak & slippage, all three ignition coils failed, brake booster failed. Build quality is vault-like, but component engineering is criminally poor.

Ok read up... This is the only review you need to read on this car. If you can live with a few little glitches and dont need your car fixed every time there is a slight shimmy, shake, creek, etc. (other wise you will pay a lot to keep this car running as if brand new like you would for ANY OTHER car), then this is the best car for the money... period. This car is a tank, I beat it hard every day and have put 110k on in just over 3 years. Ive put a few thousand into repairs but who cares. Its fun to drive, I will get it to about 210k and get a new passat. Ive changed oil every 10k (synthetic only) 91 oct MIN! Great in the snow, rain, in 100 degrees or 30 below. Dont be silly with fixes

I bought this car brand new in 2001 and was very frustrated by the dealer until the warranty went out at 50k. I decided to do all the maintenance myself and have loved it ever since. At 173K the car still drives smooth and fast and gets outstanding gas mileage considering it's size and performance. Like many other people I have had to replace CV, coils (recalled), brakes, timing belt, and a thermostat. Other than those items the car is as I bought it. I'm sure I will see 200k as long as the clutch holds up. At 173k it still spins the tires when I take off fast. :) I think two things helped my car last. For one, I have always used synthetic oil and secondly I always use premium gas.

First comment, I will never buy another Volkswagen. Had the emergency brakes went out a year ago and now my blinkers went out. At 56,000 miles the dealership flushed engine, said all okay to drive, my car died highway 100 miles out of town and had to be towed back and a new engine was put in, was very costly. I only put on 20,000 miles at first year and the dealer said it was my fault not getting regular oil changes. With no rental car provided (not covered by warranty). I also had front cv joints with axle, emission sensors and have been driving with "check engine" light on for 2 years and battery replaced! My sunroof is leaking I can not afford it. Driver side door lock is not work

I didn't review this site before purchasing my 2002 1.8t Passat Wagon (really sorry I didn't because this review will sound like many of the others).The car does look sweet,turbo was pretty awesome,& the car is stacked w/ features (sunroof, pw, pl, tiptronic, cruise, lots of space). We purchased the car with under 80000 miles. Less than 1 month into owning it the a/c compressor/clutch quit, the glove box handle fell off, a bracket under car came off, the heat quit working, the tiptronic would not switch from manual to automatic, instrument panel was 50% dim, transmission started to make a grinding noise when decelerating, 2 vent slats for the a/c fell out & paint started to peel frm inside

I bought the car new, and planned on keeping it for a long time. I love the way the car drives. However, the gas mileage is not great. (18 AVG. around town, 24 avg on hwy) Especially when you have to use premium. So far, we've replaced several ignition coils, two water pumps, two temp.sensors, and a timing belt. The front bumper keeps coming loose. And now the car makes a suspicious clunking noise. It's most likely the axle. And the radio has issues. We will be replacing it very soon.

I bought this car used with 80,000 miles on it. I felt in love with the design of the car (mine was black), tinted the windows. I got tons of compliments on my car. Drove it for about 6 months, and in anticipation of a long trip decided to check it at the mechanic. His verdict was this: it looks like new, but it's falling apart. Belt, bushings, suspension, brakes etc. The list included about 15 different things. Total cost to repair all that: $2500. After owning the car for 6 months! That's almost 1/2 the value of the car. Not to mention that oil change costs twice as much as on any normal car, runs on premium only and i had 10-12 mpg!

Having been w/ my parents when they bought this new, I have watched my dad and myself change the oil every 5000 miles, and will say you MUST use synthetic, i use castrol synthetic, and I have never had the majority of problems these people speak of, after coming from an old s-10 and porsche 944 the lights shine bright for me, and I have never had oil sludge. I replaced the timing belt, but that was preventive maintenance, and the fuel system has never given me a problem. I did have to replace the idle regulator, but it's whatever. This car has been great for my parents, and now me, it has taken numerous cross country trips, and never given us a problem. I would highly recommend a VW.

At 160K, my Passat Wagon is proving to be quite the reliable workhorse. I may have lucked out, I realize, but she has been running nearly flawlessly. Annoying stuff along the way but has been limited to mostly quirky VW stuff. The module in the driver's side door was a MAJOR bummer 3 years ago ($1K+). Was rear ended very hard recently and frame didn't budge. The Ford Focus that hit us -- front end was utterly destroyed. Body guys were quite impressed. And so is my mechanic. The 1.8T is one of the best European engines (sad it's no longer) -- fun, reliable, fairly efficient. I will drive this car into the 200K's -- because I can hardly find another Euro wagon in stick! Again, sad.

Bought "certified used" ran great for the extended warranty period. Heater stopped working 1yr after purchase, brought it to the dealer only to be told it was working fine, charged $200 for the "labor". Heater still blew cool air but I couldn't pay more money so I just made do. 3 yrs later, check oil pressure warnings consistently 1k-2k miles before the suggested oil service. I put so much oil into this piece I have to keep 5qt jugs in the trunk, NO LEAKS! Where is it going?! All 4 ignition coils burnt out! Never got recall notices but after calling THEM was told I qualify. Thermostat stuck open, clogged heater core. Headlamps constantly burn out, replaced all of them nearly twice a year!

10/2001 - needed a descent family car/something to take clients out in. Water temp sensor and trunk latch repl under warranty. CV boots tore (those that broke axles didn't inspect their car often) 115k before timing belt service, and a speed sensor. 31mpg @ 62m/h ave. Only complaint was that service departments are bad... independent mechanics offer superior parts and service. Brakes - 1 change on front 2 on rear - i buy cheap tires and destroy them. I drive this car hard and in 8 years in failed me one time( speed sensor wore out at 150k) VW is known for either awesome or horrible cars - but some issues are caused by flawed maintenance- the issue is with your dealer - not the car.

This car bleeds you!!! Don’t let its beauty & handling sway you. I bought this car in 2005 w/ 4,600 miles. I loved it & had no problems with it. But since Jan. 2007, I have averaged $1K per/yr. in repairs - axles, brakes, check engine light(3-5x), dead batteries (2-3x), dead headlights(2x), dead radio (2x), & dead car(nothing worked, not the alarm, not the clock, not the engine). The recalls didn’t cost me money but they cost me time. Repairs I paid for + repairs via recalls = lost time. Many times I went to work late, left early, or took the day off to fix my car. Even if you had a money tree just for the costs of fixing this car, it’ll cost you time. This car isn’t worth the trouble!

I had one of these cars and i absolutely loved it. No problems other than a headlight going out (which the dealership fixed for free) In 2006 when the lease was up my wife wanted a new car so we got a Mazda 6 GT it didn't last a year before $15.000 engine repair. I changed to an Asian car because they are supposed to be so reliable, now I am looking for another VW.

I really enjoy driving the car, it handles well and gets good mpg (ranges from 25-32 mpg) big downfall to this car is terrible reliability, it seems as though I am in the shop every 3 months! purchased the car with 30k on it now it has 105k. in last 75k miles I've had to repair the following: fuel lines from tank to engine, major fuel leak inside engine compartment (got reimbursed due to recall) 3 times replaced cv joints 4 coil modules transmission mounting bracket power window regulator headlights constantly burn out - at least 5 times in last 4 yrs timing belt water pump mass air flow sensor will be trading in soon, tired of dumping $ into repairs!!

I am the original owner a 2002 Passat 1.8 Turbo and while we love the way it drives it has been a money pit! Glove box latch broke, hood strut broke, check engine light comes on at least every 3-4 months and its always a vacuum line or O2 sensor, ignition coils have been replaced twice and now the heater core is clogged and neither the dealer or VWoA will step up and admit its a known problem and fix it. I agree w/ others on this site: do not I repeat, do not by a VW. I also own 2 Honda's and a Toyota and all 3 are very reliable and easy to work on yourself so you don't have to take it to the dealer all the time. Do yourself a favor and stay away from VW!!

Still love to drive the car, but frequent problems now at 7 years. Motor mounts, catalytic converter, CV, top of engine leaking oil despite 2 repairs - list goes on. Also weird electric issues throughout life of car - display showing avg mpg started malfunctioning after a year, 2 yrs ago sunroof started opening/closing on its own, etc. Even the hood open hydraulic died (no prop stick on a VW) - an $80 repair. No way will this car make it to 10 years and my next car won't be a VW based on this one's reliability. Bought new w/ regular maintenance - all done at a VW dealership.

When I was looking to purchase this car, all my research told me this car has engine problems. I got this with a brand new engine and have run nothing but Mobil 1 full synthetic oil. As a result, this thing has been incredible! Only routine maintenance has come up. Great fun to drive and very stylish as well.

I bought my passat in 05. i have always like volkswagens but if your are going to buy one you must get the previous service records. this car hs been great very fun to drive and great in the snow. traction control, abs and, 6 air bags. very safe. synthetic oil is expensive but cleaner and better and premium gas burns cleaner and is better for the car. i have had no problems or dislikes. if you take car of it it takes car of you. o yea if you use nicer bulbs, they last longer don't buy the cheapest its not always the beat deal

I loved this car. I believed the seller: "it might last 12-15 years". Excessively expensive routine- maintenance, + $ thousands for major system failures. In 6 years, they sucked $5,000.00 for: Sensors x 5; Ignition coils; radio; left axle; right axle x 2; gas hood strut; water pump; left rear door lock x 3; motor mounts (1 month before engine failed & replaced under recall); intercooler; heat shields;(recalls) rib belt; timing belt; homelink dropped off...fix cost= $500; tires replaced x2; 'transmission range switch' cleaned ($101.00. Following week: same switch replaced: $1,000.) Upholstery frayed; paint peeling; Disappointing. Stressful. Friends and I will not buy another VW product.

Thank heavens for my warranty. These cars are fun but fickle. At about 45,000 miles, the car had a very long case of the "flu." It was certified used, so I milked that warranty for over $4,000 in repairs. The maintenance can be an expensive hassle, though.

We bought this as a lease return with about 20k on it. Now has 68,000. Great motor fun to drive with good power for size. Be sure to be close to a repair shop though. I have replaced a bad water pump(plastic?) and timing belt at 40k. 2 sets of front brakes and rotors, one set of rear calipers with rotors. Both cv shafts, lower ball joint, tie rod end. 2 coils and 2 sets of plugs. I will never own a light beige cloth interior, impossible to keep clean, peeling paint inside, plastic trim breaks easily. 3 sets of tires in 68K. Brake booster froze up(fixed under warranty recall). Now the temp gauge is going out. Enough already! No more VW's. Honda/Toyota may be boring but you won't go broke.

Bought this car used with 22,000 and five years old. Hands down the best purchase I have ever made. This car truly enjoys driving 80mph. This is my wife daily driver and used when we go on vacations and is just alot of fun to drive. We have had no problems at all and regret paying for the extended warranty since we never got to use it. This was our first VW and we're looking into buying another and getting ride of my Dodge.

Just in case anyone out there still needs convicing that VW and their Passats stink when it comes to reliablity,... I had the window partly rolled down the other day and closed the door. After which the entire window fell into the door after breaking off the cheap plastic clips inside the door. Nice! VW wanted over $400, but took it to a window place and they got it down for $250. Have had the car not start which cost $600 to replace some crazy electronic part. Front axle just broke, numerous lights have stopped working and now I need a timing belt and water pump. I'm praying to sell it before having to do more work on this piece of junk. Too bad since it's such a good looking car:(

I was attracted by the interior and exterior design of the Passat. Very beautiful car, feel like luxury compare to a Camry or Accord. But the biggest problem is reliability. There has been too many recalls on this car. I have had all kind of problems with this car. Oil pump, Vacuum hoses, Water pump, OIL SLUDGE...etc This car was apparently not built to last long. Even the mechanic at my VW Dealership recommended that I get rid of the car. I am very happy I did. Buy this car only if you love to visit the mechanic every month and spend a lot of money on costly repairs. If you choose to buy it, sell it before the warranty expires.

We bought our Passat new and overall loved the car. We traded it in today on a more reliable vehicle. It was hard to part with the car, and we are sad that buying another Passat was not an option due to reliability and maintenance costs. This was a very safe and fun to drive car, but we should have cut our losses at five years. The MIL (check engine light) was on too often and often resulted in a $500+ repair. We did keep up with normal maintenance and full synthetic oil, but it still hurt to make repairs in excess of $1k when the value of the car wasn't much more.

1st new car ever bought, came from a Chevy Nova with 280K miles, Mazda Protege with over 225K miles, my VW has died at 142,000 miles from the dreaded oil sludge issue. Didn't have any other major problems, car stills looks good, all the interior parts work well, but not willing to spend $5K plus to fix it, admit to now being disappointed in the car. I will not buy another VW.

Bought new (3/02), have approx 72K miles, no major problems. Several recalls, but dealership tended to quickly/efficiently. Had the Timing Belt job completed at 65K, did not want to risk going to 95-105K as VW suggests in manual. Very fun car to drive. Based on some posts, I guess I have been lucky. But I do follow the maintenance schedule religiously and use Synthetic oil!

We bought this car after 911 primarily because we wanted to avoid airport hassles when traveling to Albuquerque and Ashland OR;ten to fourteen hour journeys by car. This car has more than filled the bill! Fast, comfortable and totally unstressed with loads of room for fishing rods, skis;you name it. At seven years it has had very few problems (CV boots, headlights) and still feels as good as the day I picked it up. Nothing in the new car market looks this good so I'll keep it 'till it falls apart; no sign of that yet. Only down side is fuel consumption-big torquey diesel engine would make the perfect car.

My car has been such a hassle from the day I got it. There was electrical issues, fan problems, another part in the motor broke and the car died (the dealership had 30 parts in stock cause this happens alot!), I got a hole in my muffler and my CV joints broke (which is expensive!). Now when I speed up the car jerks back and forth, makes a high squealing sound and the check engine light comes on. 3 other people at my work have all had issues with their passat or jetta. I will never buy another VW.. I recommend that you don't either!

V-6, 5 speed. Gets great gas mileage - 26 in town, and 33 hwy. Leather interior still looks new. However, when things go south, they go quickly. Keep an eye on CV boots over 60k. At 70k, the whole top of the engine started leaking, and after 2 re-do's of the valve cover seals, they still leak. Shocks shot at 30k. Headlights go every 10K until I disabled the DRL's. Electronics in driver's door shot. Coating on interior peels. Sunroof is possessed. But - I won't sell it because the new Passat looks Japanese, nothing this good looking gets mileage like this, I still get comments on how unique and cool it is, so overall - if you are a mechanic - you can't go wrong!

I've now owned 2 passats now and what a joke! I fell in love with my first one (2000 model) and I although I loved it, thought I may had just gotten a "bad" car. After consistent repairs, I decided to try another newer version. I got a 2002 and same thing; if one things not messing up, it's another. The car looks good and goes fast, other than that, it offers nothing but a waste of time and money. I am very sad to have to report this!

Wagon running as good as new....yes, there have been a few recalls and maintenance can be expensive ($75 oil changes). But maintenance is the key to these cars. I would never buy Used unless I had copies of all oil changes, etc...

I am posting to give a favorable thumbs up to my Passat Wagon, which I purchased new in June 2002. Sure it has had a few mechanical failures, and the usual maintenance any car needs. But other then that it's been very reliable, practical and fun to drive. A couple of the issues I have had relate to CV boot joints tearing (normal) and the passenger seat heater going out. I agree that headlight bulbs do burn out more often then normal and that regular maintenance prices are a bit higher. However, it has been and still is a blast to drive, I have great fuel economy (27- 30 mpg, being a wagon is a huge bonus and it beats the compact SUVs or Crossovers any day of the week. It's a keeper until the end.

We've had this car for 4 years and I'd love to find another just like it! My wife is a home health nurse in the hills with plenty of snow to push. She feels she can go anywhere she wants with the all wheel drive and I'm not sure that she can't. When the weather is questionable, we take the Passat and leave my Sierra 4WD in the garage. Regular maintenance is all we have done with no unexpected cost.

All I hear about this car is for the most part contrary to my experience. It's my wife's car, but I am the car buff. She bought CPO and it does have repairs early on that I am not accustomed to, being a Honda/Acura owner - things like control joints, axles, water pump - all went in advance of 100k (Honda's need brakes/tires and nothing else until 100k) and yes these repairs were significantly more expensive when compared to a Japanese car (30-40%), but overall it is a great ride sporty/luxury family sedan. Again, I am nervous because we have dumped some coin into it, so we are about to trade it in, but overall we've had a good experience with the car.

We got VW Passat 02 wagon on 06.2007 in CarMax with 51K miles on it. For the 7 month after we bought it, we spent $1500 for repairs. I got 16.5 mpg per city and 22 mpg on highway. It is the worst car: No Fuel Economy, High cost of maintenance. Bad Electric, brakes, and engine part. I did not expect the bad quality from German car producer, but I experienced it with my Passat. Service cost is too high. After 3 month the problems started with window power and electric cables&wires. Nobody could explain why station wagon "eats" gasoline as a Chevy Suburban. It is unbelievable, but I got 16 miles per gallon in city. I will never buy any VW product and would not recommend to someone else. Just bad

I bought the car new in 2002 and now am at 82,000. Have had issues with headlights constantly burning out, leaks in the carpet causing mold, the sand colored cloth interior dirties easily and is impossible to clean. The rubber coating on things peel, the tint peeled the first year, things break off all over the place, the sunroof opens randomly on its own and nearly all of the dash has shorted out at one point. It is incredibly expensive to have anything repaired or replaced (which happens quite often). Also, having it repaired at the dealer is astronomically pricey, so just prepare to pay a lot for anything to be fixed... and mechanics hate to see you come in b/c its difficult to fix.

Well, this was an experiment in "Premium German Engineering" that will never be repeated in my life. This is the absolute worst of the 20 cars I have owned in my lifetime. Cannot even remember all the broken things in only 8 months- catalytic converters, brakes, oil leaks, coolant leaks, broken power seats, inferior leather seats. And scheduled maintenance! What a joke- $2k for brake work, $2300 for cats, $1500 for timing belt + getting rid of PLASTIC water pump. Run away, do not even consider one of these used. If you have to have a VW, but it new and sell it before it's 4 years old. Period.

Engine sludge? You MUST use full synthetic oil. I've had oil changes done at Jiffy Lube - you don't have to go to the dealer. Is the car perfect? Definitely not. Dashboard buzzing - yes. Flaking interior paint - yes. Turbo lag? Hell yeah. Overall, however, it's a very good car.

This is such a beautiful car, it makes me sad to sell it. I love the luxury, the comfort, the smooth drive. I bought it in 4/06 at 94k mileage. It's now at 124k and i've made many many expensive repairs. I just can't afford to take it to the mechanic every other month anymore. And my mechanic, quite frankly, is fed up with working on it. It's a manual and so fun to drive, especially when the Turbo kicks in. i get roughly 28- 32 mpg.

Having owned a w8 now for 6 years, let me just say you have better have the income to repair this car. First, repair is extremely expensive at the dealer ship. For instance, replacing one driving headlight cost $400, bulb alone was $212. Wow. Pray you never have an electrical issue because they are extremely expensive. Engine sensors are extremely high to replace. Not only does the part cost a ton, $100 to well over a 1k each for the part and then a huge labor bill to put it in. I will never buy another vw for the this very reason, repair and maintenance are very expensive. So much for German engineering. Is designed to make repair shops (dealerships) wealthy.

i have this passat for more than 3 years so far replaced windshield wipers motor, front cv joints with axle, just got whole cd/radio player broken, some emission sensors and have been driving with "check engine" light on for 2 years (due some stupid emission sensors!) and battery replaced! so you should really consider this-this car is bad on electronics! otherwise just keep up with maintenance and you'll be good!

After reading complaints from many posts I guess I am one of the lucky owners. I have not experienced many of the problems listed. I have been faithful with maintenance and after 72,000 miles the car still runs well. I do insist on synthetic oil and change it every 5,000. The radio has gone dead a few times and after 6 1/2 years a strip on the window came off. Maintenance is expensive but it has been a good car overall.

I've read some of the reviews for '02 Passats, sounds like a bunch of whining to me. I have an '00 wagon, V6, 5 spd, leather, sunroof. Great looking wagon, very roomy. Yes, it's expensive, if you get repairs done at the dealer. Don't be stupid, use an independent garage. I drive 25K a year, and have put 140K on a car that was a 3 yr old lease trade in with 48K miles. So I'm closing in on 190K. I just had the car checked out by a private mechanic. The check engine light came on about six weeks ago. I've been told that the catalytic converter is failing, but the mechanic said "just keep driving it, the car's in great condition". The car still has the original clutch.

I purchased this automatic transmission car with 100k miles on it. When I bought it I got 26.6 mpg (all city/no ac). I put quality synthetic oil in it, k&n air filter, replaced o2 sensor, used premium gas and now it gets 31-33 mpg (all city/no ac). On the interstate I drive 55- 60 mph and get 40+mpg. It's also a much more comfortable ride than my old 02 pt cruiser. Extremely roomy inside and you can barely feel the massive potholes/rough pavement in my town. I'm 6,2" and when I put the seat all the way back it's a slightly uncomfortable reach to the pedals. Wow! I've always felt cramped in cars before. But not in this VW. I love this car. Highly recommended for tall dudes like me.

My husband got fooled into buying this vehicle. We have had nothing but ongoing problems. We had a warranty, and unfortunately nothing was covered. The interior was falling apart, water pump went out, air conditioning broke, so on, and so on. The problem with these vehicles is that you CANNOT fix anything. You have to take it to a Volkswagen dealer. They have so many electrical problems that it isn't worth it. We traded it in, (for a Toyota) and didn't get anything out of it, but at least we have a reliable vehicle. Never again will we make the mistake of purchasing a Volkswagen.

Maybe I've been lucky, but I have put almost 90k on the vehicle since purchasing used in '05 (now 119k miles), and haven't had a single problem. Fun to drive, great mpg w/ the 1.8t and 5-spd. (avg. 33 mpg on the freeway), looks good, unbeatable interior design and looks with the leather seats. Matches or exceeds the '01 Acura TL it replaced in every respect except horsepower, and it has been far more reliable to boot (2 trannys, new dash, other issues w/ '01 Acura).

Bought this car after having a Jetta. Loved the Jetta; do NOT love the Passat. Gas mileage 23 combined at best. Recurrent problems that were "fixed" (front headlight shakes, lock/unlock button won't work, one of the locks stuck, window stuck open, screeching noise from dash when cold out and using fan, burning brakes smell) and the seat heater was burning me through the seat. (they repaired that for free though). Will not buy again!

I'll just add my voice to the many other reviews saying the same thing. It's a wonderful vehicle--it's just prohibitively expensive to maintain. My story: between October 2007 and May 2008, I've repaired/replaced the alternator, A/C hoses & drier, CV boot, brakes, timing belt and water pump, major tune-up, and several other items. In total: about $5300. The primary reason for this cost is labor, in fact, about 55-60% of every repair is labor. I believe this exorbitant cost stems primarily from the fact that they have to practically dismantle the front of the car to access anything. In short, this car is for you if you don't mind pouring truckloads of money into it to keep it running.

Rarely driven, garage kept spouse’s car, only 33k in the past 7 years. Constant issues with recalls and poor service. Interior falling apart and in some spots the plastic flakes as though a form of automatic impetigo. Vehicle will not remain in alignment for more than 6 months. Common to other VW owners; hose failures, ECM malfunctions, cooling system issues, constant mold in the ventilation system ( although the most recent recall is suppose to fix this issue after 7 years of complaining). Service with authorized VW dealers is horrible, have tried two in the area, seems they are more interested in going for the value add transmission flush than working though a problem.

The car runs well, but it falls apart. The plastic parts break(radio knobs, garage door opener, antenna, engine design components, seat knobs), and the rubberized paint used in the interior peels (door handles, center console, the unused ash tray covers). The seat leather is shoddy. All this makes the car appear very old -- and I drive it very little -- about 5,000 miles a year. Great highway mpg with the 4 cyl (35 mpg); not great in commuting traffic; ok (22-24 mpg) otherwise.

First comment, we will never buy another Volkswagen. At 36,000 miles the engine had to be flushed due to sludge, even with regular oil changes. Dealership flushed engine, said all okay. From 42,000 miles to 73,000 miles, had 3 more engine oil sludge problems. Finally, at 73,000 miles, VW replaced the engine. With less than 2,000 miles on new engine, bolt that holds tensioner "broke", resulting in piston damage to new engine. Pending bill is $3,2000, since item is not covered by warranty. Engine replacement work took 2 months with no rental car provided (not covered by warranty). Between VW and dealership service, or lack thereof, will never buy another VW (this is 3rd VW vehicle).

I had a major FUEL LEAK on my passat just outside of the warranty period, I was disappointed that VW would do nothing to offset the $600+ cost for the repairs, not to mention they had no interest in learning about what caused this serious safety issue. Gas was spraying from a high pressure fuel line directly on top of the engine! I also had a cv joint fail, oxygen sensors fail and now my check engine light is back on again! Other than reliability issues this car is fun to drive and is affordable to buy but terrible reliability. I won't buy another VW until they are able to make reliable vehicles, there are plenty of options for fun to drive vehicles that wont need all the repairs

Dealer advertised as a "Certified Pre- Owned VW". When I started doing the paperwork to buy, I was informed that it wasn't certified and it would be an extra $800. With good experience on my 2003 Jetta 1.8T, decided to take the plunge anyway. My mistake. I bought the car with 42,000 miles and it now has 54,000. At about 50,000 miles, the CV boots were broke ($400 plus) and now at 54,000 the water pump cut loose. Who'd have thought a nylon impeller would not withstand about 200 degrees and hydrodynamic forces any longer than 54,000 miles. Not what I expected from "German engineering". Other than the hole in my wallet, it is fun to drive, roomy, and has timeless styling.

I bought my 2002 Passat wagon used with 23k on it. I was drawn by the styling inside and out, vault- like build quality, and the utility of a wagon. The only negative I saw was the lackluster engine power. Since then, I have replaced the convenience electronics module, turn signal flasher, brake booster pump, steering rack, one catalytic converter, and the other cat is now leaking and needs replaced. The transmission is dodgy, the climate control sometimes cuts out, and the rear window washer doesn't work. The sunroof drain leaks into the rear floor. I've spent about $5000 in repairs in 3 years. When the car is working, it's fabulous. When it's not, which is way too often, it's a disaster.

Bought the car new in 3/2002, very fun to drive. However, would agree that it is expensive to maintain. Oil changes and recommended mileage checkups are not cheap. Have read many postings about changing the timing belt between 60-70K (VW manual recommends 90K), plan to do, but will run 1000-1200K at an independent shop ($1500 at dealership). Concerned about oil sludge issues since the dealership did not use full synthetic until VW announced it should be standard (2004).

I have owned the Passat since it was new. I have always enjoyed driving the car. It has a lot of luxury features. The car has been reliable with no major repairs needed. I have had a few issues. Headlights bulbs go out often. It burns 1 to 2 quarts of oil between oil changes. I have had to service the back brakes 3 times even though the car has less than 50,000 miles. Gas mileage has been poor.

I bought this car new and I still love it. The driving dynamics and the general build quality are commendable. The fuel economy of the 1.8T is terrific (25 around town, 29-31 on the hwy) yet V6-like acceleration is there when I want it. The Monsoon sound system is great. It's great in the snow (with snow tires). The interior comfort and lighting are super. I have two complaints: a couple things have gone wrong that should not go wrong (clogged heater core) and it is expensive to maintain.

bought the car new initially had a problem with the windshield wiper relay (wipers quit working in hard rain) which was poorly handled by the dealership. Had to threaten with lawsuit to get them to properly diagnose and replace. few other problems so far. The "home link" controller broke out of the sunshade and was fixed under warranty. starter motor gave up at 45000 miles and VW would not pay for replacement (very disappointed as this is a highway vehicle with very few starts per day). handle of glove compartment broke off (did not fix yet). multi-function display is getting very dim. one new CV joint @ 84Kmiles. car has been great otherwise pleasure and fun to drive (see below)

I bought my 2002 vw used in 2005 from a dealer with and purchased a 5 yrs/100000 miles extended warranty and it was a "certified used vehicle". At 72000 miles (2007), the engine was replaced and at 75000 miles (2007) the transmission failed becasue a bolt which hold the transmission to the engine was missing!?? Dealer said the warranty has expired on Jan.2007? Came to find out that the extended warranty that vw offered covers not 5 years from the date of the purchase, but 5 years from the model year 2002- 2007!?

We bought our Passat in 04 with only 27K miles on it and it's now got 93,000... virtually all highway miles, well maintained, lots of oil changes, definitely babied. We had planned to drive it until it dropped. Sadly after giving it a year ago to my daughter for college commuting we've now come to the conclusion that we simply cannot afford the repair bills. We average about $1,000 in repairs each year. Passats are great cars but too costly to keep up. Ours is now for sale

VWs have come under fire for poor reliability in the past few years. It is unfortunate because they make some luxurious cars and offer features that other makers can't match at VWs prices. We purchased this car used after a good experience with a 2003 Turbo Jetta. Refined and quiet are good descriptors of this one. It is a bit heavy. The AWD is good; just make sure you have good tires. I would've liked the W8, but I don't mind the proven VR6, even if it is a bit sluggish. It has plenty of torque to haul 5 adults and pull a jetski. The interior is quiet, and looks like-new after five years. Heated seats are the best in the industry! Great styling too! You can get 27mpg+ if you don't drive like a maniac on the highway - even at 65mph!

I bought my 2002 new in August 2001. It has been a relatively problem free vehicle but repairs and maintenance are not inexpensive. Dealer labor rates make up most of expense which are currently $90.00/hr. The body and trim finish is very good and interior materials excellent. The car is very comfortable on long trips and is fun to drive. Gas mileage is excellent. It rides like a much more expensive car.

I purchased my car new (only 5 miles on odo) 5 years ago, made my last payment in April, have 98,500 mi on it and I still love my car! I've had all recommended svcs done and took it in for recalls, but otherwise have not had issues other than window reg clip that was fixed under ext warranty and the driver's seat belt latch that needs to be replaced now (not covered, but only $189 TL). Great handling, decent mileage, still peppy after all these miles and the all-black exterior has held up, even out of the garage! Maybe I've been lucky, but I don't foresee replacing my baby for a long time. It still looks like new!

I have owned VWs over forty years and this car has been the worst. Over the five years I have owned the car I've kept up the required maintenance. When it needed service it was done, when things broke I fixed them, no short cuts. I have cv boots failing with less than 40000 miles, an expensive repair, over $400. I had the water pump fail at 64000K, over $1000 to repair. I had to take the car back twice to put the car back together correctly. VW refused to back the car because it was out of warranty, so much for loyalty. And now the car dropped an exhaust valve 73000, the repair is over $4200. VW did come to the plate and offered a "final offer" of $2200 to help pay the repair bill.

I bought this car used three months ago with 58,000 miles on it. I have since had to replace the heater core, the CV boots (both sides), and replace some major parts in the transmission due to a leak. The dealer I bought it from replaced the CV boots and fortunately the transmission repairs were covered on my service contract, but I had to pay for the heater core, which was about $1,000. I talked to VW of America and the VW dealership about the the concerns but they were of little help. The features are nice, but the car is completely unreliable. I am going to trade it in within the next month because of all of the problems I have had and do not recommend a VW to anyone.

We have loved the styling of our Passat and it drives like a dream. However, we have made numerous repairs to the vehicle and it is very expensive to fix. In fact, we had serious initial problems that were covered by warranty, but VW was unable to obtain the needed parts for nearly an entire month (this was late in 2001). We had a terrible experience dealing with VW Customer Care. Not at all what we expected from a German car company. It's a beautiful car and a great ride, but I'm not rich enough to own it.

My wife and I really enjoy this car. We have had basically no mechanical issues at all, just routine maintenance. It has all the power that anybody would want, take-off, routine driving and the like. We were entertaining the idea of trading or selling this car, but my wife will have no part of it. It is her car and for me to try to sell or dispose of it would be a big mistake at this time. We have no real complaints and thoroughly enjoy this car. On a trip it averages almost 23.5 MPG and in city driving averages about 21 mpg., for a W8 engine that is superb.

I bought a Passat 1.8T after the beginning of this year. It ran perfectly for a couple of days, then it staled on me and I had to go change an ignition coil. Now I have problems with my starter, which is very expensive to repair, and problems with my A/C. I love the look of the car, inside and out, but it's exspensive to fix and not that reliable. I have to take it to the dealership every month at least once a month, for some small repair.

This car has good pick-up, but it experiences hesitation at low speeds and starts. The dual transmission system is excellent. Over the road, the suspension on curves and incline is excellent. Slow driving with breaks in the payment show the car as stiff and weak on absorbing breaks in the road way. The car needs more insulation to block external noise.

I have made 16 visits to the dealer to service my Passat in 4 years! It only has 16,600 miles on it, yet it continues to break down. Volkswagen of America has been unresponsive to concerns. Water accumulates in every area of the engine and car due to poor drainage. The doors have had issues, with locks freezing and the doors flinging open and not being able to be closed. I will never deal with Volkswagen again.

We just traded in my old and tired 98 Olds Cutlass. After my experience with my Cutlass, I swore never to drive anything American (not that I'm not Patriotic, but Detroit needs some overhaul). I was thinking of going Japanese but then the Passat got my attention and I do not regret my decision. This car is impressive. Its build quality is top notch. The stuff that you pay extra for in other cars (including BMW) come standard in this car plus much more. The engine's power is adequate but is not as athletic as my other car, a 2000 Maxima SE. Part of that could be from the Passat's porky 3,800 lbs. curb weight. But then the Maxima isn't loaded with as many safety features and AWD as the Passat. Go buy one!

I was set on a used '03 Accord until I drove a Passat. It is so much better in all aspects except perhaps reliability. I did have mine checked out by a mechanic before I purchased it, and they found nothing wrong with it even after I told them to be extra critial. This car always seems to have more left in the pedal when you're trying to pass someone. I've had it a few days and it is an absolute pleasure to drive. Its fuel economy is 25.6 mpg so far but that's mostly in traffic. Drive one, have it checked out, and then enjoy it. It's so much classier than Accords and Camrys of the same year. Plus, they hold their value pretty well. Buy one!

I purchased my first new car ever four years ago hoping to get away from car problems for at least five years and went with the Consumer Reports car of the year. I bought the most expensive Passat wagon with the all wheel drive, and paid for it almost entirely out of my pocket. Since then I have have had several problems with it. Most recently the computer died costing about $2,000. The garage made me wait a week to bring it in. They are the rudest garage ever. They make almost no effort to appese the customer. The last problem I had with really squeaky brakes and they told me it was normal and that bus sdqueked too. I will never buy another Passat.

I bougth this car new and have put 73,000 miles on it in 4 years as a daily driver to work. I have a combined fuel average of 29.5 mpg. The car has been in the shop to have the coils replaced (factory recall, all four at one time) never had one go out, replaced the garage opener, radio and divers seatbelt under warranty and the seat heaters recall. This is not perfect, but not bad for four years. Now I've read about $75.00 headlamp repalcements, brakes and rotors that went bad at 25,000 miles and other such complaints and all I can say is change the headlamp yourself, easy once you do it and quit driving like a maniac a set of brakes should last at least 50,000 and will go 80,000 if you drive like you're sane. P.S. use Mobil 1 0W40 oil.

My Passat was purchased used with 60,000 miles, in beautiful condition both body and running quality. After dropping my youngest at school, I was rear ended, but to my disbelief and that of the attending police, my Passat had only the slightest dent. The car that ran into me was totaled, the front end smashed, air bags off, and window broken. I feel totally safe in the Passat, and feel secure knowing that my children are riding in a quality built wagon.

In almost 80,000 miles of driving, I can honestly say this has been a great car. My dealership has been outstanding. Except for the two recalls that were handled promptly, all other service visits were for wear and tear items like normal light bulbs burn out, vacuum hoses need to be replaced, etc. I'm not trying to be a VW apologist, but in my opinion a lot of the things that people complain about in this forum are maintenance issues, not reliability issues. Regarding the turbo/oil system issues, I have had no oil problems with this car, but I have used synthetic since I purchased this car. I think this should have been standard with a turbo engine, anyway.

This is an amazing car that looks and drives like new 5 years later. It is fun to drive, yet is still a luxury car. There have been no problems with this car ever, and it just has the normal service at the dealer. It has had its share of miles on it and there is just no way I can get rid of it. It may not look it, especially with it being a VW, but forget the problems known about VW, because they are not true. The one thing to know is that this car will last forever as long as it gets serviced.

When you rent a car as often as I do, you know you have a good car when you get back home and start your own car up. I rent newer cars, and their fit, finish and performance don't compare to my VW Passat GLX. And the service! My car's armrest started to wear; no sweat, the dealership (in Colorado, no less), happily replaced it. Right now I am considering an SUV because of a potential job change to the Midwest. I doubt seriously if I will trade in or sell my Passat. It's a classic!

I really like this car. I purchased this car mostly for my 70 mile commute (which climbs over 2000 feet!) It handles great on the curves, climbs the 10 mile 7% grade in 5th gear (I have the 5-spd manual), goes as fast as you want, and gets great MPG for a car this size and with this much power. In comparison to the '01 Acura TL is replaced, the Passat is not quite as plush or fast, but it was about $5K cheaper (as a CPO) than comparable TL's, and is a very suitable replacement with more personality than the TL. I am a little worried about keeping it for a long time, but I've put 22k miles in 8 months in all conditions (summer, snow, hills, ect) without any problems. So far, so good!

Has been reliable, quiet, comfortable, and fun to drive. I don't ask for more than that. My wife has the 1.8 four cylinder. The six is smoother on acceleration. Both cruise on the highway with great ease. Interior controls took some getting used too, but they feel quite comfortable now. Would like a little better visibility when backing up. The small features for the price are an added bonus. I've enjoyed it on long trips especially. Set the cruise conrol (or you'll be well over the speed limit without knowing it) and just enjoy the comfort of a car that takes the effort out of driving.

I have owned a lot of cars, but the 2002 Volkswagen Passat is the best I have ever had. Its comfort, handling, and safty are great. I never knew how well these cars handled the road until I took it to the Redwood coast to get a feel of it. It drives like a dream. The turbo engine is awesome. It just gets up and takes off. I know now it will be the car I will ever buy again.

This is my fifth VW / Audi and I could not be happier. I bought it with used 42,000 miles on it and so far it has been great. Its build quality is excellent, power is fine, and the ride is quiet and comfortable. I have put 3,000 miles on it so far and I average 18 mpg in town and 24 highway. That is not great, but that is what you get with AWD, and I knew that going in. I tried premium gas and I didn't notice a difference so I have been using midgrade. It came with the VW Certified Pre-Owned Warranty so I don't have to worry about anything for two years or 24,000 miles.

I bought my 2002 Passat used one year ago. It now has 41,000 miles on it. I chose the Passat because I did much research beforehand and wanted a car that held its value better than what I was used to with the cars I'd previously owned (Mazda, Ford, and Buick). I was so sick of trading in and seeing the trade in value of American made cars. My research showed that German made cars hold their values better than any other. I wasn't going to make a haisty decision though and did much research on the Passat. I'm very happy with my choice. I recently had it appraised and the value is holding at what I gave for it. How many cars do that a year later with 14,000 more miles? My Passat is a stylish, fast car and I have had no problems with it at all.

The Passat is not a reliable / dependable car. Mine is on its third set of new REAR rotors and fourth set of pads in 37,000 miles. The first three times were under warranty (dealership asked NO questions). They made it seem like it was a problem with that year of car. Now, after the warranty is expired, they are refusing to accommodate us with new back brakes and are claiming that we always paid for the pads (which wasn't the case). The radio stopped working and was replaced (no questions asked). You cannot change your taillights and headlights. Ours burned out about seven times! Also, this car has had problems with its electrical system, throttle lag (which is dangerous), and its serpentine belt has already been replaced - tires too.

I loved my 2002 Passat, until recently. It has been a great family car Howevr, it rained, a seal around the windshield wipers leaked, and the electronics "brain" entirely fired. After paying the dealer, $5,200 to repair the problem the car is still full of electronic problems, like a flashing radio display, fritzed and motor in the truck. My dealer refuses to stand up and acknowledge any of this as being their fault. Thus, because of a faulty design,and/or gasket and shabby dealer service, I am now driving the last VW I will ever own.

I bought my 2002 Volkswagen Passat GLS 1.8T in May 2005 in California and I drove it to Las Vegas NV and I have not done any services such as oil change, tune up etc, etc and ever since I bought it I've had no problems with it. It's fast and has a great fuel economy. When it comes to racing no American car with same engine size ever beats it in take offs or passing. It has excellent response. I have beat the Pontiac Grand Am V6 the Honda Civic and Accord. They were not able to beat me or pass me! The most awesome time was when I beat a Ford Expedition which was V8. I could not believe that a 4-cylinder car had more take off performance than the Expedition. This car is the best. The performance and design make one of a kind.

Don't buy this car! Not unless you enjoy throwing money out the window. My 2002 Volkswagen Passat was good for the first few months. Then it broke down on me in Indiana (coils). The A/C system stinks. It has broken three times. The check engine light comes on all the time. No joke, it comes on every few hundred miles. I take it in, pay a butt load of money for something stupid, then a few miles later it comes on again. This is the most unreliable car I have ever owned. When working it rides nice and looks nice, but I would give anything to have my 1997 Honda Civic back. Buy a Toyota or a Honda, buy ANYTHING, just not a Passat. Most positive reviews you will see only have a few miles on the car. I have 65,000. its junk.

I have experienced only minor defects with this car. The radio connector failed three times under the dash. Also, I had a bad bearing in the blower motor which was covered under warranty. Other than random misfires during interstate driving, this car has been problem-free and repair-free over 63,000 miles. My only complaint is about the weakly designed pop-up rear seat power receptable, which has been fixed three times at the dealer's expense. For a sedan, this is a blast to drive while consistently getting 31 mpg to 33 mpg at highway speeds. This car is a good combination of performance and economy with the 5-speed manual transmission.

Have had nothing but problems with my 2002 Volkswagen Passat since it was bought new. The engine light comes on at least four times a winter with evap issues, I had to replace glove box door, the shifter, and a pump. My Saturn was more reliable than this. Too bad it is so fun to drive.

My 2002 Volkswagen Passat GLS 1.8T ran great for a few years, but after 40,000 miles the thing started going down hill fast. At 60,000 miles just out of warranty the Turbo went out ($1,700), the axel is bad in the front ($590), and the car is always getting out of alignment. It no longer has any pep. I am very unhappy with this car. I wish I would have gotten a Honda! I coworker heard my fighting with the Volkswagen people and she also had a Passat Lemon, that she had to sue the company over. If you are leasing a car for a couple of years and do not planning on owning it, then it should be an alright car. If you want to own a reliable car for a few years then this is not your car.

The 2002 Volkswagen Passat has lots of get up and go and good mileage for a V6 vehicle. Its fit and finish are awesome and it has classic lines that don't get old. It has a roomy interior with room for two adults in the rear, it is a squeeze with three. The engine fan is loud though. All in all, this car is a great buy that will retain its value.

I love my Passat. It's the second Volkswagen that I have owned. It is so comfortable, has excellent handling - it feels really good on turns and while cruising the freeway. The inside is perfect. To sum it up briefly, the VW Passat is a great car. It has all the great handling of a higher priced German luxury sedan, and it is incredibly fun to drive. It is kind of heavy for the amount of power the turbo four puts out, but the Tiptronic 5 speed automatic / manual transmission puts the power down very well, passing is never a problem (sometimes almost too easy). The car feels quite quick and nimble for its size. The Monsoon sound system is amazing. There is plenty of room for passengers in the back seat, and it has a surprisingly large trunk. The little engine makes nearly 100 horsepower per liter! I love this car, and if you ever buy one, you will love it too.

Have had five Maximas since 1990. After testing a 2002 Maxima and Passat, my 15- year-old son said "except for sheer acceleration, the Passat is superior in every way." He was right. This car is stylish (even white, which I don't care for), very comfortable (with memory seats, everyone should find a good driving position), has good room for people (abovementioned 6' son or his 6'5" friend sits behind me when I drive) and stuff (easily handles 8'lumber). I have two herniated lower discs in my back, so the heated seatbacks as well as seats are great. Overall, German ergonomics are better than Japanese. Looking forward to the 4-Motion capability in bad weather. Power could be better. Six months...so far so good!

It has been a delight to own and operate our 2002 Passat. We receive many positive comments about its exterior looks as well as the performance this car exibits. We have just experienced our first mechanical problem with a blown aternator that wiped out a cell in the battery. We realize that cars are only machines and it was fixed, however, the service work was extremely poor. We have loved our car but hate the service department, consequently we are questioning if we well buy another Passat. It is sad that the sevice dept. can ruin a great car. Over all the car is great and we were looking forward to the new Passat..not anymore.

We've had nothing but trouble with this car. Headlights need to be replaced every 3 months, check engine light has come on 5 times already- each requiring costly repairs, gas pumps stop fueling before tank is full, squirrel chewed through ignition wire, rear-seat ash tray opens inadvertently and recently fell out, turn signal fell out on left door, radio malfunctioned and needed to be replaced. Fortunately none of the issues so far have affected the core functions of the car.

I've had my Passat for almost 2 years. Bought it used with 9,000 miles on it. I now have 38,000 miles on it. It's been in the shop 5 - 6 times. All problems (trans, cv boot, rear rotors, seat motor) were repaired by the dealer an no cost to me. It rides great, gets good mpg with no repeat or nagging problems. It's holding great resale value and looking good. I think I'll keep it a while longer.

Since I have had my Passat, it has needed so much attention. I have had to get the check engine light fixed 3 times, the brakes adjusted, the steering needed to be fixed and now, my horn doesn't work. My horn has been failing for about 5,000 miles, but initially is would only go out and then come back on. The dealership couldn't address it, because they were unable to recreate the problem. Now at 54,000 miles, I took it back to the dealership, since the horn failed totally, and they need to replace the ENTIRE steering whell (at a mere cost of $850). Not covered under warranty! Even though, the issue was brought up while still under warranty!!

I love this car. i found a 2002 passat with 5000 miles on it. It was the exact color i wanted. I counldn't ask for more. When i sit in it i feel as if i'm in a lexus. This car looks and rides great, but it is COMPLETELY unreliable. I've taken it to the local dealership 4 times in the past 6 months, to replace headlight bulbs and a belt, and once for a noise the car was making with the wheels - which cost over $1,500 to replace CV Axles due to "Normal wear and Tear" (which consists of 15,000 miles per year on a 2 1/2 year old car). If you drive +/- 10,000 miles per year, then by all means, buy a Passat. Anything more than that, don't bother. You'll be at the dealership more times than not. I know the service manager at my local VW dealership by name, and that's completely ridiculous.

I have been extremely pleased with my Passat. I love all the interior gadgets and options and its very stylish and luxurious. Everyone that gets in it loves it too!

Exceeds My Expectations

Heard about transmission and brake issues from prior Passat owners but took a chance because I liked the car's design and the way it handled. Have put 60K miles on car in 3.5 years with three minor trips to the dealer, one to replace a rear upper trunk lock mechanism, one to install a temperature sensor and front brake pads, and one to install new spark plugs at 40K due to misfires on plugs 2 and 6. Not a problem since. Replaced tires at 35K also. Didn't care for the original Continental tires. Also, dealer experience was very positive. Keep waiting for the problems to show but so far, it runs great every day 25 miles to and from work.

Faulty Security System

Vandalism is a problem with the Passat. RCMP states Passat is one of the easiest vehicles to break into. Thief simply drives a screwdriver through the door lock and turns it to open all the windows. This does not activate the vehicle's security system. VW well aware of the problem but has taken no action to remedy the defective security system. FACTORY RECALL?? The 1.8 liter turbo is somewhat flat on acceration at low rpm's but performs well above 2000 rpm's. Fun to drive and handles well. Good fuel economy on the highway (40+ mpg) although this drops substantially in city. Mechanical problems have been limited to recurring difficulties disengaging the ignition key from ignition.

When VW came out with the 1.8T engine and extended it's warranty to 4yrs/48,000 miles on the Passat in 2002, I had to buy one. In terms of style, comfort, and exterior appearance, the car was a dream come true. It felt solid, quiet, and responsive. Mechanically, however, the car has been a nightmare. It's been recalled four times and has had to go into the shop another three to four times for other problems since I purchased. I realized after driving the car for an extended period that the car's interior appointments weren't as user-friendly as they could be. The storage space up front is minimal at best, and is poorly placed. Also, for people 5' 5" and under, the sun visors are not deep enough to come close to blocking the sun.
