FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY:MOUNTING

ON SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, THERE IS A BREATHER HOSE THAT ATTACHES TO THE NOZZLE OF THE ON-BOARD REFUELING VAPOR RECOVERY (ORVR) VALVE, WHICH IS LOCATED ON THE TOPSIDE OF THE FUEL TANK. THE BREATHER HOSE IS ATTACHED WITH A CLAMP, WHOSE "TABS" FACE IN THE UPWARD DIRECTION. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS CRASHED UNDER THE NEW CAR ASSESSMENT PROGRAM (NCAP) TEST (I.E., 35 MPH FRONTAL BARRIER CRASH), THE CLAMP "TABS" CONTACTED THE UNDERSIDE OF THE BODY DUE TO MOVEMENT OF THE FUEL TANK, CAUSING THE NOZZLE TO BREAK.

Bought this car new in '02 and have put over 260,000 miles on it and don't regret the purchase ever and would consider buying another '02 Highlander to replace it (with fewer miles, of course, maybe 150,000 if I could afford it). Has never let us down. Vehicles like this justify Toyota's "can't kill 'em" reputation, not to mention the loyalty of long-term Toyota owners (bought my first one in '71).

It finally died at 230K miles

I bought my blue Highlander from the dealership, I was the 2nd owner. I got it at 59,000 miles and it just died on my about a month ago at 230,000+ miles. I absolutely loved this car. I previously owned a Toyota 4Runner (V6) and loved that car too, had it at college and it was a great, safe vehicle that I used to pile my college friends into when we went out. I was constantly on the highway with a lead foot and never had a problem with that. I didn't expect that much from the Highlander but I found out, it was just as reliable at the 4Runner but with a smoother ride. I never had an issue with the engine, but I maintain my cars very well. Also, this Highlander got me through 4 blizzards in the DC/MD/VA area without an issue, and I never hesitated to take it out on the snowy roads, it was actually pretty fun. Car had an awesome amount of get up and go and loved to "race" faster cars who would sleep on me at the light. Lol. My car engine died and I am still not willing to give it up. It just got a brand new battery and four new tires before it died. I plan on finding a new engine eventually and keeping it for my son to drive when he's ready.

I purchased the car in October 2015. Very excellent ride. I had some maintenance issues due to the person who I bought it from did not drive the vehicle that much. I feel that it is worth the value since I purchased it for $5000.00 dollars and it only had 54,000 miles on it. Love my Toyota😀

We bought our Highlander four years ago and have loved it til now. It seems there are a batch of Toyota 6cyl engines with bad valve seals. Toyota was repairing these engines until 2010. They absolve themselves after a vehicle is 8 years old. We bought our Highlander in 2010 with only 87000mi. It now has 133000mi. Now in the last six months the engine consumes large quantities of oil. The symptom of these engines with bad seals is they consume oil when driven at highway speeds. A service mgr at the local Toyota dealer confirmed this valve seal problem when I described the pattern of oil consumption, a $2700. repair at the dealer if it is still repairable! the six seals cost $6 each!

We bought our 2002 dark green 4 cyl Highlander new, and it now has 353,800 miles on it! We have replaced the catalytic converters, A/C knob, and just recently, the timing chain. The car still looks great inside and out. When (if!) it ever dies, I'll buy another one. We have always owned Toyotas because they are so dependable and low-maintenance, but this is the best one ever.

I bought this car new in 2002 and now have 200,000 miles on it, which to me is amazing. I've owned a couple of Toyotas in the past (Celica, Corolla, Camry), but this one has lasted the longest. No problems except AC knob broke last year and cost $900 to repair/replace (had to remove dash to replace a knob? That doesn't make sense to me). I know it's on borrowed time, so am looking to replace soon....Also own a 2008 HL limited, but I like this "original" better.

132K miles and second time it's the catalytic converter. Additionally, for a 4-cyl, I should really get better gas mileage. Need to go back to a different maker. My first and ONLY Toyota.

Originally was going to get an '02 4-Runner but the Highlander had better interior space and ride. Changing my mind was the best purchase decision I ever made. I now have 114,000 miles with ZERO repairs, just maintenance when it's due. The 'check engine' light came on once and it was due to a vacuum hose coming loose. Correct that in about 10 minutes. Replaced that original battery after 8 years even though it was still working fine even at -10 degrees, figured I would really be pushing my luck by going longer than that. Still running with original suspension components and rear brakes. Front brakes have been replaced once and the rotors resurfaced. Wish I had gotten auto-dim mirror

First let me say I didn't want this car but we bought it because it was in our price range. It had 77,000 miles when purchased. I am happy to say it grew on me over the past 2 yrs. Great fuel usage (400+ to the tank), low maintenance cost and reliability. Ours has 135,000 miles and the drivetrain is still strong! I have the 4 cylinder And it drives like a six cylinder Interior is durable and shows very little wear (even with the dogs) easy to clean and the paint still looks good.

I loved the vehicle. It fit me to a "T". After owning it for about 1 1/2 years I started having problems with skipping. After several mechanics looking at it, I took it to a transmission man and he found a ball bearing had broken and ground up in the transmission so I had to replace it. He said he's has several Toyotas with the same thing. In 2010 it started loosing oil but couldn't find where. The third mechanic found it had a broken oil ring on the #1 cylinder and needs a new motor. So much for Toyota.

Simply Irresistable!

This is a wonderful car. I bought mine brand new and I now have 79,000 miles on it. It has never needed anything other than a new battery and one new set of tires. I changed my tires to Toyo as I think they handle better. I treat my cars good and have the oil changed every 3,000 miles. It looks great, but better yet it runs great. That's the thing about Toyota's. They just run. I hate cars that break down constantly on the side of the road, and it's never even a consideration with this car. I expect to have some expense around 90,000. Timing chain and anything else it needs. I did have the front brakes done recently. Buy this car! You won't regret it.

This is the best vehicle I have ever owned. In its 106K miles and counting, I've never had to do a single mechanical repair on it. Just brakes and tires! It's fully loaded and has all the bells and whistles I need. Drives smoothly, corners well and has plenty of cargo room. It's comfortable too. I miss my arm rest when I drive my husband's car or a rental.

Car still rides quiet (make sure to use quiet riding tires), has had very few problems that required any major work. Gives 18 city, 22 highway in Summers at speed limit. Take 10% off in CT winters. My car was built in Japan. Only brakes and scheduled maintenance work have been needed. Had engine check light come on after maintenance, but mechanic reset it at no charge. Battery needed change after 6 years. On the negative side, I the old tires wore out unevenly. Now I get them aligned annually. Great SUV. Will buy again if mileage is improved significantly without too much loss of power. This SUV still looks modern in styling and finish.

After owning the car a few years, my check engine light would come on and go off. The service manager recommended that I do the cat. converter because it seemed that it was going out and I only had about 15,000 miles before my warranty was up. I think this is problem with some of the Highlanders. And yes, the heater/air is acting up.

Coming up on 120,000. I guess I'll get a tune-up. Every time I take it to the dealer they say it's fine. Replaced the brakes once and had a ball bearing replaced. Other than that, it runs great. Husband bought me a new VW CC as an early Christmas gift - but I can't give up this SUV, so he'll have to take the new car. I know this sounds crazy -- but why replace it if it's running great!!! Plus it has more room and can haul more.

Just bought this vehicle for my wife to cart around our 2 boys and already love it. Compared to newer American vehicles we test drove, it was built much, MUCH better. I hope it gives us the longevity others say they have. We bought with 50k miles... how sad to say that this vehicle in the test drive had a better ride to it than the 09 American vehicles we test drove? GREAT resale value as well. No junk vehicle here!

I currently own two 2002 models - one with 110,000 miles, the other with 170,000. And they're still perfect! Toyota did it right with these models. The interior is still modern by today's standards. And the 3.0L V6 is a beast! It runs so smoothly and quietly; and yet it is extremely powerful and responsive. We've never had a problem - no leaks, no noises, no dysfunctions. I've replaced typical parts: tires, air filters, oil, bulbs, etc. and it runs like new! The parts are easy to find and cheap, too! My other cars are at least $60,000 each; but the $14,000 I spent on each of these Highlanders was much better spent! If you find one, buy it!

The vehicle started out OK with no issues. By the time 70,000 miles rolled around we had unending engine light problems which the dealer kept "fixing" by running "calibration". This held for a few months at a time until the emissions warranty ran out. Then a "surprise" quote to the tune of $1,000 for catalytic converter job! At 104,000 miles the vehicle came to a literal "grinding" halt with a $4,000 transmission repair quote from a dealer. Took it an independent reputable tranny shop that found a pinion gear roll pin that had not been installed right at the factory, had backed out and caused damage to the transmission. Claim to Toyota did nothing. I had better luck with my other Toyotas.

We purchased the Highlander 6 years ago after much research. We moved to the city so this is our only car which does it all. It was an excellent buy and have not had a major problem, worst thing to happen was heater switch had to be repaired for $350. Highly recommend. We have a 2WD V6 which we both feel handles great and gets 20MPG in city and 24 on road with 87 octane. Drives just like a car. We buy cars that last and drive them till they die. Our next car will be a Hybrid Highlander but it may be a while before this one quits!

We bought this SUV after a lot of research. It seemed to have what we were looking for in a family car. We have had it for almost three years and love it. We use either 89 or 93 octane fuel and consistently get 23-24 mpg in city and highway. The seats are not as comfy as my old Ford Ranger when it comes to long trips (3+ hrs) but they are fine for normal travel. It handles like a nice car. We really love everything about this car and have no major complaints. We would recommend considering one to anyone who asks. We did wish it was a little cheaper at the time of purchase, but we figured we will get what we pay for. Our Highlander is a keeper.

The check engine light has been (and still is) on since I think day 2 of ownership. Took it to Toyota several times, the last one they stated the code is generic and represents over 500 possible problems it could be. It took 3 months just to get it to pass PA inspection, brakes/rotors replaced too many times within 70k miles of driving, the stainless steel tube at the power steering resevoir blew out, the seats are the most uncomfortable I have ever sat in, the interior is chincy looking for $26k, the engine is sluggish and noisy, weird wind noise w/ 4 windows down. This is the 2nd and probably last Toyota for us.

Our 2002 has 160,000 miles on it and has been a very reliable vehicle. I do all of my own routine maintenence work, and filers, plugs, etc., are easily accessible. The engine and auto trans still run like brand new - does not use any oil between changes, has never needed any internal engine or trans work - and never had any problems with any major components. We live on a rough gravel road, and the suspension was starting to feel a bit lose at 150,000 miles - I installed new struts, link rods, ball joints, bushings, etc. and it is back to feeling very "tight". The Idle Control Valve became dirty and caused stalling problems, but once I cleaned it problem went away.

I originally bought this car, my first Toyota, because it was rated #1 in Advanced Safety (the lighted running boards were a plus too!). Over 77,000 miles later, it still gets 22 mpg around town, 26 mpg on road trips and I've only had to replace the tires at 56,000. No other expense except for oil changes every 3,000 miles. That emissions light does come on with the gas cap issue, but I just let it stay on. Cargo compartment more than adequate for my needs -- 400 lbs of chicken feed and two bales of hay on the luggage racks on top! Back seat comfortably seats three if you need to. I just had it detailed so it is brand new all over again and I couldn't ask for a better, more dependable car

After five years and 27,000 miles, I have mixed feelings about our 2002 Highlander. Like all Toyotas it has been super-reliable, and maintenance has cost less than $600 including one pair of tires. However, even with the V6 engine this vehicle is fairly sluggish and gets about 16-17 mpg around town and 20-22 mpg on the highway. Handling is secure but feels ponderous. There is a bewildering array of levers protruding from the steering column. The storage compartment between the two front seats is horrible: narrow and deep, with a two-part cover that jams easily. The seats are only semi-comfortable on long trips. OK if you need an SUV, I guess, but nothing to get excited about.

I had bought this car used at a local dealership with 10k miles on it. After a few months, I had started to notice some minor rattling coming from the trunk area. I had brought it back to the dealership and they claimed to have replaced some clips. Still rattles. A few months later, I bought it to another dealership for the recall and again complained about the rattle. They added some foam, but the noise is still there. Over the years, more rattling started to appear from the dash and trunk. It's beginning to sound like my old 1984 Supra. At least the car is reliable. Hasn't broken down once.

Besides the expensive $35K+ SUVs, this has to be the best buy for your money! This car is so reliable, and hasn't broken down yet, even at 65,000 miles! All we have done is changed the oil twice, and changed the tires at 30K miles. Oh, the goodyears that originally came on the Highlander were "interesting." We replaced them with michelins. very satisfied with this purchase, way better than any van or the honda pilot! Very comfortable car, can tow up to 3K pounds (tried it before, works great with the V6, even up the steep hills in the Grapevine in N. LA county), good acceleration, nice looking, average gas mileage is about 20 MPG, mostly street driving. Not bad eh? Great car overall!

My lease on this Highlander runs out soon and I am undecided whether I should buy it, or turn it in. It's been very reliable, with one odd recurring problem: if you don't tighten the gas cap completely, a light comes on to indicate a problem with the emission controls. To get it reset, you have to take the vehicle to a dealer! It is heavy and feels ponderous. Fuel efficiency (19 mpg) is OK for a two-ton vehicle, but acceleration is mediocre even with the V6. The seats are not very comfortable on long trips. The controls on the steering column are confusing at night. The deep, narrow console between the front seats is horrible; stuff at the bottom is impossible to reach!

I have owned many different vehicles, mostly american made, but this was my 1st non-american made vehicle, and should I add... BY FAR the BEST of ALL!! I am sold on my Toyota. Great mileage, freat ride & handling & gives me the SUV look & room that I love. What more could you ask for?

This is my car for transition to retirement. I was a financial advisor and always drove cars that were less than 3 years old. This one was for work and retirement. It is now five years old and I am going for ten. It is maintenance free. I carry kayaks on the top, paddles inside, use it to take stuff to the dump, and use it to take my wife to nice functions. In fact, I am using it to drive a candidate for Comptroller of the whole state of CT. I love this car.

Would've been good. Should've.

Good car, but it does have problems. I don't know if we got a lemon, or if this is just the way this car is. We bought this car new, and since then have only put 45,000 miles on it. The engine is very noisy now, which can't be due to a bad driver. The family member that drives this is very gentle with it, making no use of the 200-some hp engine. Gas mileage is pretty poor for a Toyota, even if it is an SUV. Had to replace the blower fan and motor for the a/c 3 times already. It's starting to go out again. Original brakes are still on it and even though they don't need to be replaced anytime soon, they still emit a soft high-pitched sqeal.

still lovin it after 4 years

This is my 3rd and last Toyota as the reliability has been just plain awful. I've had constant interior rattles and now my instrument cluster is dead, as are two air to fuel sensors. I'm only 2k out of warranty and the dealer along with Toyota said 'Too Bad', even though it's always been dealer serviced. Having a $1200 repair at just over 3 years of age while being just 2k out of warranty is unacceptable. Who ever heard of an instrument cluster dying at just 3 years of age!

An '02... 60K+... & still bulletproof.

Replacing our '95 4Runner (purchased new) was our '02 Highlander (purchased new - 3.0l V6 4x2). Occupants appreciate the comfortable and plush interior. The Camry-based ride is tight and refined. The original 16" Goodyears were just replaced @ 60K (with same). Absolutely NO mechanical problems to date. An extremely sure-footed vehicle (further enhanced with VSC) in foul weather. Much easier to park/maneuver than a larger SUV. I would describe the exterior styling as modestly elegant. We experience 23 mpg in mixed driving, approaching 30 mpg hwy. Overall, an excellent value.

I bought this car with 36000 miles on it. The dealer wanted to sell us a xterra at first, but after the test drive of both cars, I came to be in love with the highlander. It has comfort, performance, and style. Now I have close to 80000 miles on it and still running strong. Only major problem was that the idle was very low aroung 200rpms. Took it to the dealer and it was the idle air control valve. But other then that no problems. I have only done the maint. on it. At 75000 I changed the tires (40000 miles tires). I have not even touched the brakes. Last time I check them at 75000, they still have 75%-50% life on them.

Excellent car based SUV. No mechanical issues after 61,000 miles. Comfortable and quiet on long drives. Lots of cargo room, and good mpg for an SUV - average 18 mpg city, 24 mpg highway. Reliable, unobtrusive, a bit boring -- exactly why one buys a Toyota. Expect this Highlander to last 200,000 plus miles.

I've driven a few cars of similar size and type. They don't compare to this car's performance! The Highlander has great handling that gives the driver a nice feel for the road.. the steering is sharp.. the acceleration is good.. the brakes are excellent! The interior is pretty solid.. the only complaints i have is that it gets noisy at high speeds and the sound system could be better. I've been using the Highlander for trips, moving boxes/furniture, moving heavy materials, and everyday use! It's very useful to have a larger car but the Highlander is not so large that it becomes bulky. It still feels like a car, rather than the truck (unlike the 4Runner).

Nice car/truck...it rides smooth, intuitive controls,no squeeks or rattles only wind noise at speeds above 50-mph.Overall the quality is so good I wish I could afford a new limited. I had leather installed after market on the seats ,doors and steering wheel, and added a chrome exhast tip and front tinted windows. The original black paint has held up nicely as well as the factory alloys. This is my 3rd Toyota,I traded in an 03 Corolla LE with 45k miles for the Highlander with no regrets .After years of GM product abuse (98 Intrigue-99 Aurora excluded)I will only buy Toyotas until I can afford the Lexus line of cars and trucks...(ps)The Highlander looks great next to my black 02 Camry SE V6

Primarily my wife's round-town ride, she loves it is 5'4" and 115 lbs. I like it very much except on our 300 mile road trips the seats are a little small for me 6'2" 180 lbs. Reliable, rattle free. Can't drive over 20mph with rear windows down, messes your ears up...get the kids to shut up though! I would have bought one for me if the seat was not so small. Rear seat room is excellent for kids and adults.

We wanted a SUV style vehicle to replace a Conversion Van. Researched SUV's for quality, design, ride. Also, talked to other with SUV's. The Highlander Limited came out ahead. I'm not into off road stuff so a "car-ish" rather than a "truck-ish" ride was, and has been, the best solution for me. My 2002 Highland was purchased used with a Toyota Used Car Certification check. Have had no problems and enjoy driving it in the city and on the highway. I'd do it all over again with Toyota.

I love it and would HIGHLY recommend it to anyone with SUV needs/wants and with a requirement for undying reliability. For several 000's less than a Lexus you can have all the same basic features, more room and the confidence that you are driving one of the best SUV's ever built. This is the best vehicle I have ever owned for my job. I drive over 30,000 miles/yr. through all kinds of weather and I have never been let down... BUY IT!

This Highlander has been all we had hoped it would be. We have an SR5 but it is more equiped than the typical Limited. It provides a refined ride with ample interior space, it feels solid and handles responsively. We don't mind making long trips in it, and performs well under harsh wintery conditions. Gas mileage has been very good for an SUV. We are very satisfied.

With winter driving on our new Geolander HT-S tires this SUV/car with all the safety features offered has been worth the $34K price. OEM Bridgestones were very poor in snow. High wind noise with rear windows open; but why open them? Driver side power seat great but manual front pax seat very uncomfortable for this 6 footer. Unlit interior controls a challenge at night, but then this HL just drives itself down the interstate. Very satisfied.

Now have over 20,000 miles on our Highlander and still love it. We also own a Lexus LS400 but always take the Highlander on trips. Not sure why, but just seem to prefer the Highlander. Is it perfect? No, but it really is a nice road car. Handles well, power is decent and has plenty of room for the two of us. Negatives: too much road noise for "limited" type vehicle. Should have power passenger seat. Would be nice to have opening rear window. Sound system could definitely be improved.

On Aug. 9th, 2003, I was driving my Highlander on a roadtrip in Oregon. On a remote road, I was hit by a drunk driver... driver side to drive side. Both of us were driving at 55mph. My Highlander saved my life. The engine dropped down and the airbag deployed. I and my two friends walked away from the accident. This SUV was fun to drive, lots of interior room and safe. A pleasure to owe.

If I go into all the items that I like about this car, you would think that I was working for the company. My job has me on the road a lot, so I see many driving conditions on and off the highway. Ride for the Highlander is fabulous. Road noise is kept to a minimum. Handling is excellent. Turning radius compares to a much smaller vehicle. Stereo in the Limited is wonderful for roadtrips or intown cruising. Seat positioning is outstanding for heights of 5'0-6'0. Rear legroom is incredible.

Almost perfect mid-size SUV, but the leather seats are as slippery as ice. I often can't lay anything on the seat - it slides off during normal stopping. Also, the car has no back-up lights! Also would enjoy sound system controls on the steering wheel. Finally, my only other issue with the car is ego- related. I wish it looked more "butch". But I love having all the advantages of a SUV in a vehicle that delivers decent, civilized gas mileage yet rides like a car, with plenty of power. Overall a great vehicle.

I have owned this for 1 year now and am pleasantly surprised what a delight it is to own. This is my 3rd Toyota and I am just in love with this company. Their cars are far superior to all others I've owned... Chrysler, GM, Ford... none of them compare to the quality of Toyota. I was happy with the 4 cylinder over the 6, because the difference in power was not very great, and I was able to use the money I saved on upgrades like leather and sunroof - aftermarket ofcourse. I get loads of looks and questions from all kinds of people about this car. They are all surprised at how little I paid for it. $27000 new with everything. Highly Recommended.

bought new in 12/03, took on trip over 1000 miles to ky and back to va. I was never more happy to get out of the worst seats, I have ever been in, in a car/suv. I always thought Toyota was a great car but now know better, seats are too small and hard as a rock, no support to the side and the lumbar is worthless. The metal in this car is very thin and sounds like a tin can when you hit a bump in the road. I will be happy when we can unload this car on someone that is in love with so called Toyota quality and resale value.

I don't understand why anyone would consider a Jeep Cherokee or, worse, a Trailblazer. I work with another minister who got a Trailblazer the same time I got my Highlander. We've traded a few times - Highlander's ride is superior, although not markedly so - but the real separation is in this. He's been back to the dealership twice in a year; once for a malfunctioning headlamp which required leaving the car all day. My neighbor's Grand Cherokee has the same story. Once the warranty ends, God help you. I also have a Camry and Corolla for my kids. We don't even know what a repair bill is!

I've had some problems with fan noise and dashboard rattles. I plan on getting 150k out of this vehicle - just like my old Ford Explorer. For the money Toyota builds a great vehicle. In 2001 I discovered the Toyota Sequoia, and I watched as it increased 10K in price in 14 mos. Then I found the Highlander. It is the perfect combination of truck, performance, reliability, safety, cargo, quality, and comfort available for the price. Expensive? Perhaps, but compared to EVERYTHING else its a steal. If you have 50K for a car, get a Sequoia, but if you have 50K, why not just get the Lexus! For the rest of us - Highlander!!

Hey, i purchased a 2002 Toyota Highlander Limited V-6 AWD and i love it. the only thing i have to complain about is the standard Bridgestone tires in the snow, which stink, and the rattles the car has.

Having own this vehicle for a short time has made me love it...really love it! Interior design is well built and exterior is up to date with present designs and looks like it will never be outdated. Acceleration is great, brake system is excellent, overall performance is just what I was looking for. The dealer was very helpful and able to give us what we wanted.

I have been driving my Toyota Highlander for a year now and have yet to find a problem with it. Unlike GM cars that I owned during the previous 25 years, it never had a failure requiring a warranty trip to the dealer. There was one non-urgent recall that I took the car to the dealer for, but the machine ran the same before and after the repair.

So far, I have no complaints. The auto is relatively expensive when compared to similar vehicles. It does take some time getting acustomed to dropping 30K on a truck. I expect it to pay off 8-10 years down the road.

The Highlander is sporty and provides a ride equal or better than most cars. The engine performs well (Very quiet), the acceleration is good and the transmission shifts smoothly. The sporty details of the exterior makes it rather attractive to look at. The interior controls are welllocated and the storage space is is more than adequate for CD's, tapes, etc.

I would recommend the Highlander

Smooth, powerful pickup. Good response to demand but attention to road necessary. Dials on dashboard need to have running lights on to be visible. Wind noise loud with rear windows part open. We needed more room for yearly trips to Florida. We knew we had to look into an SUV for more room. The compact SUVs were cheap, but just too small. The midsize SUVs were out of our price range, until we found the Highlander. After driving it we knew it was the vehicle for us. We purchased a base model 4 cyl with a few minor upgrades. Let me tell you, this is great vehicle. It has everything you need. The 4 cly 2 WD FWD is great on snow covered roads and the engine has plenty of power for normal driving with the benefit of 22- 27 mpg. If you don't go off road and your looking for a vehicle for more room and a low price this one can't be beat.

We've owned a Highlander for about a year and a half, and overall, I'm disappointed. I hate the soft steering - it's hard to drive straight at highway speeds. And it's not very quiet at high speeds. If you put down *any* window, you get the vibration/roar people talk about. The seats are unsupportive, and the seat bottoms are very short. I'm 6-feet tall, and my back aches after driving for more than an hour. Nearly as bad as my wife's old RAV-4. The stock stereo is TERRIBLE. The back tonneau cover is heavy and badly designed -- must be handled *very* carefully to avoid bumping/scratching the interior or cargo. Lousy dealer, too.

I went from a FordExplorer to a Rav 4 to this, all new. I will not give this vehicle up for the world. It fits 3 car seats comfy in the back and rides like a car. It is so quiet i can hear my kids breathing. I had the basic package installed from port than put in extras myself, it was cheaper, i added playstaystion 2, dvd, tv's, roof rack, mud guards, roof rack, alarm, tint. Wouldn't change it for the worl. My sister bought one the week later and my mom the Seqouia TRd edition. We are now all Toyota Lovers. :)

Overall, one of best, if not the best, new vehicles I've ever purchased (7 previous). The ride and quietness are top notch. recently, my wife & I transported her elderly aunt & uncle in the Highlander. They were truly impressed, and these are pretty selective individuals, as they have always had luxury vehicles. Her uncle couldn't get over the quiet, car like quality & comfort. I have, so far, (knock on wood) had no mechanical problems whatsoever. I've had only changed oil and rotated tires. p.s. it has also performed excellent during the early winter we've been getting in upstate NY.

I just bought my Highlander few months ago, so far its okey but i am not really satisfied with the "Fun to drive" Toyota is claiming. Its a little sluggish when the motor is cold and the cargo area is not that big for SUV.The back seat is very small for tall person (im 6`3 tall) I will give this car 4 out of 10.Wish i bought a Honda SUV.

Having worn-out our second Blazer we hit the lots looking for another SUV. Tried the new GM products...Envoy, Trailblazer, Tahoe...but one drive in the Highlander and we were hooked. The Camry base is evident over the other SUV offerings, with a car like drive and handle...smooth, comfy and hugs the road. We do not tow but appreciate the peppy V6, traction system and mpg...a quality buy!

I think most people assume that you need the V-6 option with the Highlander, but if your driving is mostly suburban, the 4 cylinder is more than adequate. The 4 cylinder also does well in highway driving. I chose the 4 cylinder because I wanted to maximize my fuel economy, but still get into a somewhat larger SUV. (I used to drive one of the mini-SUV's)

At the begining, I was really happy with the SUV. And two weeks later, I noticed my garage floor had fluids.Went to the dealer and they found out the transmission fluid was leaking and replaced seal. A few months later, I drove the car with sun roof little open and it was raining. A few hours later, water started dripping from inside right above both driver and passanger windows. Dealer found out the drainage pipe was broken inside of the car. I also installed the hood protector. If I drive the car over 45mph, the wind noise is so high that it hurts your ear. Finally I have to use tape to seal the gap between the protector and the hood.

This is a great SUV. It drives and handles like a car; and, it has ground and curb clearance like a truck. I have driven it on and off pavement and found that it works well either way. I did learn that SUV's hydroplane just as well as cars do...but I don't think its the SUV (if you get my drift). The Highlander is a handsome car with very easy features internally, like collapsing the back seat (VERY EASY), and changing CD's while driving. Everything is made easy for the driver and passenger!!! Great Car!

Typical Toyota product. You can spend thousands more and not get better fit, finish and dependability. The only reason it wasn't rated any higher is that it is still an SUV and can't compare in shear joy of driving with a sport sedan or sports car. For an SUV it comes as close as any I've dirven. Handles as if it were much smaller and lighter. The only preceived weakness is in numb steering feed back, and the crapy tires that come with it.

Outstanding Vehicle. My "test drive" was when I needed more cargo space for a trip to Wash DC last year. I rented a Highlander for the 14 hour, one way trip. It was so comfortable and tracked so well on the highway! I bought one a couple of months later. I hadn't planned on this major purchase, but the long trip decided it for me. Great gas mileage, the cargo I needed, nice styling, and drives like a car. Absolutely no problems, and complete satisfaction except for "annoyances" of cup holder and OD select mentioned below. 3.0 six cylinder is engine of choice.

The Toyota was my choice due to location of the dealer; price; previous experience. For the $8000 difference in the RX300( my other car) and the Highlander, I opted for the larger usable space. On its first road trip I got over 22 mpg during the 1700 miles including local driving in and around DC and travel through the Tennessee and Georgia mountains. Comfort was great The seats easily fold down. Plenty of storage space. The automatic air conditioning worked great. No worry about the power antenna in the car wash. Purchase price was under $30,000 for the Limited AWD with leather; 6 disc changer; sunroof and tow package

Fun and versatile. Fit and finish are superb. It is comfortable and I can pack all my camping and biking gear in the back. Pleanty of room. The 6 is peppy and I never have problems accelerating to pass. Only problem has been the door to the glove box rattled. The dealer found a way to insulate the door and now it is as quiet as can be. Sound system is good but not great. Also, They should redesign where the lever for the gas door is placed. It is currently on the floor and sometimes my heal catches it as I am exiting the car. It is not the cheapest in the market, but the quality and reliability are worth every cent.

I testdrove both V6 and 2.4 4cyl models, it showed the difference on a demanding hills, but Toyota did a good job tuning this 2.4l engine, it roars a bit louder, but the power does not drain out at all. So I went ahead and bought the cheaper model. The cabin is impressively quiet crusing on the road, the interior is roomy, nicely designed with a lot of useful storage rooms, and the comfortable driving position is easily found with every button easily reached.

Great performance and handling as well as build quality. Excellent reliability. The only knocks I can see are the fuel economy (ave. 23mpg) and the poorly located and impractical cupholders between the two front seats. But all in all the best vehicle that I have ever owned. So glad to be rid of my Merc Mountaineer which was very crude by comparison. It's a shame the U.S. automakers are still lagging far behind most imports. This is the second Toyota product I have owned and am always pleased with the engineering and quality of construction of the Toyota line. The Highlander is no exception. I found the Highlander to be an excellant mid size SUV. I replaced a 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Highlander is far superior than the Jeep in style, comfort & reliability. There is enough room in the back for 2 child car seats & the leather seating in the limited is very comfortable. In the 7500 miles that I have owned the car (7 months) I am very pleased with all aspects of the car.

All mechanical components seem to be ok. Premium radio system has noticable noise out of driver's side tweeter. Over 5 attempts to fix problem still no solution. Speaker, radio unit, and amplifier have been changed. Toyota has no solution proposed. Speaker noise exists on am, fm and cd settings. Very frustrating.

drove both 4 & 6 cy., and chose the 4 for gas mileage. It's fine for majority of driving, but if you ever have to stop on an incline, and then start uphill again it may take you to Christmas to get to the top! I test drove Explorer, Pathfinder, CR-V, Santa Fe, Escape, and Jeep Liberty. Highlander's quality far better than any of those. I have bought nine new cars in my life, and this was the most unpleasant transaction I've had. The dealership was the most impersonal, uncaring, arrogant salesmen I've ever dealt with, especially AFTER the sale. Wouldn't return phone calls.

I've been looking at purchasing a SUV to replace our family van for the last year. I have test drove and rented most of them to my disappointment. Poor handling, shoddy workmanship, lousy fuel mileage etc. But after trying in vain to purchase a Honda Pilot I came across the Highlander. The best move I have ever made was to test drive and go with the FWD 6 clylinder. Great looks, great gas mileage, handles like a dream and a nice sun roof. Who could ask for anything more.

Test drove both the 4-cylinder and the V6. Would have liked the V6, but living in Houston (read: FLAT) made the 4-cyl a nice choice, especially with the gas mileage and the $1500 price difference. Also, the 4-cyl is bigger and has more power than you might expect. So far the Highlander has been perfect for our new family of three. VERY roomy, VERY quiet, and VERY comfortable. Haven't had the wind problems that others have mentioned, but its not overly windy down on the Gulf Coast. Even with the carseat in the back row, there is ample space for 2 more adults, plus our 90# Labrador in the cargo area (my advice: buy the cargo mat for the back!).

Bought one last month and love it. Love the exterior design and the interior design. Did well in the crash test ratings which is important to me as a parent. Love the height and angle at which the radio and controls are. The back doors are full-size; no bonking your head trying to get into the back of this SUV. It is so fun to drive, although I have difficulty seeing past the headrest when backing up. Never had that problem with any vehicle. Just something to get used to.

I've had my Highlander 1yr 3 mos, 20,000+ miles & I've loved every mile & every minute ! I was recently Rear- ended at a stop light, the other driver was stopped but decided it was time to go without the green light, he hit us hard enough to throw us a few feet forward. Expecting to get out and see quite a bit of damage, I was surprised to see a few minor scratches. To my astonishment that was exactly ALL that the toyota dealership & the repair shop found ! So KUDOS to the Highlander's fabulous Rear End !

I had the luxury of evaluating and personally test driving 27 vehicles I felt had potential to be the best. The Highlander was chosen. Son of a gun, turns out I made a perfect choice! She's wonderful! She's spectacularly satisfying. A quality and truly reliable trooper, as well proven after many miles of often very challenging driving conditions.

With just under 5,000 miles on my Highlander I can say it is just as sound and as fun to drive as my 2000 Avalon. My wife is on her second Tahoe and likes them really well. But I find her taking my Highlander when she has a chance. Much easier to get up into and still has great visibility. There is no comparison in cornering/handling and fuel economy. It can't tow as much as the Tahoe but it pulls a 18' fishing boat very easily. I bought it to handle the South Dakota winters and still be able to run up and down the roads after the pheasants. Not getting rated fuel milage as of yet but it is close.

This truely is a dream like machine. Perfect quality, not a single blemish, not a problem in the 1st 6,700 miles we have driven, great snow traction, a head turner as you drive, a joy. Interior, console and trim are what you expect in a pricier Lexus. I read that Toyota uses the same suppliers as the Lexus. Our choice between the roomier Acura MDX ($3K more) and Highlander. Our Honda Accord experience was so bad that we decided go for the Quality leader. MDX reviews say Transmission Clunks and windows/sunroofs leak. I am glad we stuck with Toyota.

The Highlander Limited V6 mimics the Lexus RX300 in many ways but more reasonably priced. Comfort and build quality are top-notch. More usuable storage than the Lexus. Drivetrain and ride are similar to a Camry, not like a typical SUV. Exterior size is about the same as a Honda Accord, which makes it easy to maneuver, park, and fit in your garage. The Limited is missing some things that would be expected on a vehicle over $33K, specifically steering wheel mounted audio controls. The stereo is first-rate, however. We've had the Highlander only a month but it is great and deserves serious consideration for SUV buyers.

We have only had the Highlander for one week and have driven about 450 miles. This SUV is very smooth and quiet; very little wind noise and low levels of road noise even on concrete pavement. It handles very well with its tight turning radius and is easy to maneuver in a parking lot. Front seat comfort is excellent with the optional 8-way power seat. We traded in a '99 RAV 4 for the Highlander; there is no comparison between these two SUV's. So far, we could not be more pleased with this purchase

Wow! What an incredible vehicle! We traded up from a Camry and glad we did! From the outside it looks small, but once inside it has an amazing amount of space (especially after folding the back seats) Can carry lots of stuff (use often in our craft business, garage sale shopping, etc) Doesn't feel too big and can see everything on the road (unlike the huge SUV's) Doesn't feel like an SUV, but like a large Camry. SMOOOOOOOOOTH! Highly recommend. Can be a bit pricey but well worth the money. We purchased the 6 Cyclinder and love the get up and go! Thanks Toyota!

Just bought a 2002 Highlander V6 FWD. It has all the features we were looking for at an affordable price for an SUV. Love the reclining back seats and the armrest. It has plenty of pick-up on the freeway and rides smooth. Put 700 miles on it the first weekend we had it. I still like the tilt steering in american cars, but you can't have everything. I hope to get several years of good service out of this vehicle and so far it looks like I will.

When I first drove the highlander I couldn't tell that I was in a truck, it drove so much like a car. I have had the highlander since November and I absolutely love it. It is worth the extra money for the limited, it looks alot nicer and I love the leather. It drives much nicer than the 4-runner and since it is built on a Lexus chassis, it is great for my back. There is nothing I don't love about this truck. Outstanding value, superb ride and Toyota quality. I would buy another one tomorrow.

I know it's a SUV that that will never see more than a dirt road but it doesn't need too. The majority of the SUV buyers over pay for off-road capabilities that they never use. Not a bad vehicle but should come better equipped. For 28K, you only get cloth seats, power driver seat, and a moonroof. I was able to prive a Lexus RX w/ similar features at 33.5K, should have gone for that but the car was for my mom and she didn't want to pay the price difference. For little more, she would have had the leather and a 4 year warranty, oh and wood instead of that fake aluminum looking stuff on the dash.

Well built, solid, easy to drive. Steering is a bit vague and requires some attention on the highway to track. Great, smooth brakes. Quiet with just a bit of wind noise. Good seating and comfortable ride - a bit on the choppy side at times, but controlled and compliant. Definitely not a truck but not quite a car. Great switch feel and controls and good visibility. Some body roll, but its not a sports car! We've had zero defects and problems since new: it's now been 3 months. If you need a car but require more storage than a car and want more head, leg and shoulder room than a car, this is it. Great vehicle for 4 adults on a trip!. We didn't buy it for off-roading, so can't comment on that.

Just Plain Good Toyota

I had Pathfinder, but THIS is something else. You don't expect from exterior the quality of the ride nor the luxurios interior. Limited with leather and V6 is worth every penny, comfort, space and the drive feeling is a pleasure. I bought five new cars and a SUV in the past 18 years and four of them Toyota but is this TOP. Treat yourself...get one. No I'm not a salesmen, I'm a graphic artist. After all it is a TOYOTA. I wish domestic auto makers learn something and bring the honor and the excelence of auto making back to USA.

My wife and I were not happy with the downsized SUV offerings.... until (drum roll please) we decided to "upscale" a tad and try out the Highlander. Comfort and ride are in a whole different class than the aforementioned mini's and with our 2wd v6 drive base model equipped with fender flares, rear spoiler, bug deflector, roof rack, four-wheel discs, reese hitch/wiring, privacy glass, 8-way power seat, keyless entry, Steller alloy wheels, and a few other goodies - well - this baby was a like a glove fit for us. (I've added McNeil WeatherFlectors and taillight covers to "butch-up" the all white Highlander....so far).

I have now had my 2002 Highlander Limited for 1 week and am absolutely impressed with the ride, build quality and performance of this car. Six months ago I traded our '99 Lexus RX300 for another car for my wife. The Highlander is our second car and I see many similarities between it and the RX300. This truely surpised me considering a new RX will cost around $40k and I paid invoice of $29k for my Highlander! I cannot say enough good things about the 2002 Highlander Limited!

I love this SUV. I don't go off road and don't use 4WD. Most people who buy this type of vehicle will get 4WD and never use it. Don't bother. Also, test drive the 4 cyl first. You will be surprised at the power it has. The V6 is better but if you don't haul stuff and plan to get a 2WD, this will work. This is a car in an SUV's body.

I spent months looking for a new car & drove every SUV out there! Borrom line- it's hard to beat the Toyota reliability & the 'amount' of vehicle I could purchase for the price! Broguht my Highlander home & it seemed like I owned it forever. Controls are so functional --its just layed out logically. The ride is incredibly smooth , handling is great, and front seats are very comfortable. I drive the AWD 4 cyl- and the motor is not undersized as I thought it might be. It's got plenty of oommph when I need it. Great attention to detail! Vast amounts of cargo space in this one! Three adults fit great in the back seat too.

I have owned Explorers (2), 4-Runner, Jeep, and GMC. The Highlander is by far the best one, based on the comfort and driveability. Toyota is right on by designing an SUV that drives like a car. When I get in my daughter's Explorer, it feels like I'm riding in a rough old buggy.

I love my Highlander. It's comfortable, convenient and reliable. The 6Cyl version has enough kick to get on to the BQE (or any other express way), but the 4 Cyl. needs more power. The ride is smooth even on unpaved roads and NYC beatup highways. Inconvenient elbow rests. They are too close to the driver's body and height is not adjustable. The cup holders without the center console can hold a 1 liter bottle, but the center console has small, inconvenient cup holders. The center console could be higher for more storage space and more functionality. The fog lamps switch (to the left of the steering wheel) is hard to see and use. I would reccomend it to anybody without any hesitation.

We went to the Toyota dealership to test the legroom in the Tundra. Not only did my son not fit in the backseat, I did not fit well in the front seat. Well, long story short, we started to leave when my wife saw the Highlander at a price we liked. It turned out to be one of those "one and only" that dealers advertise, then sell the day before the ad comes out. Only -5- weeks old, but it has been a great vehicle. Quiet, roomy, and so far very economical. Was initially hesitant on the 4cyl but really have no complaints. Hard to call it an SUV, I think of it more as a tall station wagon.

Comfortable ride and driving experience. Really a car with SUV capabilites for bad weather and road conditions. Like the high ride with car feel. Would not reccommend for real off-road activites. has very nice cargo capacity for a SUV of its size. I really like the tight feel of the car and Toyota dependability.

Choosing a 4 cylinder gives me extrordinary pleasure: my purchase price was lower and now that gas prices are higher, I continue to save because I use less. I find very little loss of power when passing. The design was of prime importance and the reliability needed to equal its reputation. As a widow these were my top priorities and all have been met.

The Highlander is very easy to drive (not as easy as compact SUVs such as CRVs) considering its size. It is a lot easier to drive than a 4Runner or an Excursion. The steering is light enough so the car doesn't feel heavy. And there is not an overall sense of "bulkiness" when changing lanes, backing up, etc... The 4 Cyl. 2WD only feels slightly less powerful than the SR5 V6 4Runner. But, you should test drive both, back to back, before you decide if the 4 cyl. Highlander is powerful enough. I would not recommend getting the 4WD option with the 4 cyl. Highlander. It would weigh down the vehicle dramatically causing it to feel a tad sluggish.

The Highlander has been a pleasure to drive this past year. The vehicle has outstanding build quality and solidity. It is very quiet and easy to drive. Comfort for rear seat passengers is good, especially with the reclining rear seats. The size of the vehicle is a good balance that provides adequate hauling capacity while keeping down vehicle weight. I was able to carry a rolled 9' x 12' carpet inside. Controls are sensibly placed and easy to operate. It took a little while to get used to the brakes. At first they felt a little bit soft, but the vehicle has good stopping distance and control. Turning radius is significantly better than the Lexus RX300.

The HL has pretty well met my expectations; it has a clean classic styling, a powerful smooth V6, great handling/breaking and no noticeable body roll, almost car like ride. The interior is comfortable with high seating positions and good visibility. There is plenty of storage throughout the vehicle with easily foldable rear seats with good cargo space in return. Overall the term CSU (Crossover Sport Utility) applies more to the Highlander than SUV, which is fine by me.

The check engine light kept coming on (Which does not mean much in current automobiles). After three trips to the dealer they finally changed out the entire computer mother board and fixed the problem. Other than that it is an excellent car with great looks and lots of power. After test driving the Highlander all the other SUVs seemed to drive like U-Haul trucks. This car is pure joy. The 4-cylinder has more than enough power, and you save $1,500 + better gas mileage. The quality is great, same as other Toyotas. At first, I had a hard time spending $26k for this car compared to buying a Camry or Accord, but now I'm glad I did. The utility and extra space this vehicle affords is well worth the difference.
