We bought this used a while back for $5K it had 185K miles on it. It was a lot of fun to drive, gas mileage was pretty good, and it was great in the winter. It was comfortable and easy to get in and out of, although the cargo space is marginal at best. Ours had (as most do) a hitch receiver if you want to pull a utility trailer. The most annoying things about this car were the vibrating bezel around the stereo unit, and the rear window freezing shut in the winter. Once it locked me out with the keys in the ignition, engine running! Mechanically, however, it was very reliable and the one time it needed a repair it was inexpensive. We sold it to a relative who somehow rolled it over, and then after setting it back on its wheels, drove it home, albeit worse for the wear. It is still running and has yet to have any significant mechanical trouble.

Unstoppable Jeep! 247000 miles!

Blown head gasket at 110k miles....do not buy if it has a .7 Liter engine! The 4cylinder one may be ok. Was a nice car to drive until this happened. Would not recommend.

I made a great choice for a first Jeep. In fact if I had to make the choice all over again I'd choose this car again. I bought it new in Nov of 02 Its now 14(!) years later and it has 170k miles on it. It drives well as long as you have the correct tires on it. I've taken off road into the back country and driven coast to coast in it. Its a trooper. If I had one gripe its all my fault. Sometimes I really wish I had a trunk to lock things in. But then it wouldn't be a jeep. Its on its last legs now. I think its a year away from retirement. I give all my used cars to charity. The body and interior and are in excellent condition. I'm sure they will be glad to have it.

Great little Jeep!

I bought my '02 Liberty Sport V-6 4wd in '06, it had 56,000 miles on it. I bought it with a rebuilt trans and over the years had a few problems. Overall it's a wonderful little SUV! My only real issue is that the gas mileage is poor. It did not get what the manufacture stated it would. I had it to Jeep a few times and they said that this is how they are. I get 10-11mpg city and 15 hwy. Aside from that it's a handsome looking Jeep and a workhorse with carrying materials as I remodel my home. The 4wd is awesome in the snow! I currently have 104,900k and it still looks and rides great!

Best car, ever!

I bought my '02 Jeep Liberty in 2007 with around 60,000 miles on it. I absolutely loved it. I never had any problems with it until 2015, after it reached over 170,000 miles on it. I had the radiator, and starter replaced and it started making a metal on metal noise from the front end of the car. No mechanic has been able to pin point what the noise is, but I figured it was time to trade her in before putting any more money into such an old car. Absolutely love this car, if I had the money I would buy another Jeep Liberty in a heartbeat!!!

Will NOT Purchase another!!

I only had my Jeep Liberty for a few months before I decided it was not reliable! From the second I drove off with it I knew something wasn't right. I had to instantly replace the brakes, rotors, ball joints, and struts. It still didn't ride correctly. I then had to replace the condenser and discharge line. I never figured out what exactly was wrong with it as far as the driving goes. I feel like maybe it was just the way it's made. I just got tired of putting money into it so I got rid of it. It got around 9 miles per gallon on the highway! I had serious problems with the steering. I HAD to drive with both hands and use some muscle just to keep it in the road especially at a high speed like on a highway. I do not recommend this vehicle especially if you have small children you want to protect!!!

Still have my 2002!

I bought this jeep when the 2002 hit the showroom floor. I absolutely love it. Currently has around 175,000 miles on it. Over the 13 years I've had it the first 11were awesome. The only problem was that the a/c compressor had to be replaced at about year 6 (80,000 miles or so). Regularly maintained. Recently had to replace the fan. Both rear doors/windows are problematic. One of the doors won't open from the inside or out and the window won't open on the other. Minor considering the overall reliability. She still looks good on the outside. Driver side carpet and upholstery are very worn, but that is to be expected. I want my next vehicle to be a Jeep, but hopefully that will be several years from now! Update July 2016: I still have and love my Jeep.

...the engine blew at 130,000 miles. I really enjoyed driving my jeep and loved the room that it had. I took good care of it and had expected it to last a lot longer than what it did. Like I have read from so many others, my jeep engine blew up at just 130,000 miles. There was no sign of an oil leak and I didn't notice anything out of sorts until one day it started to knock and the engine blew a rod. I had regular oil changes and maintenance at the jeep dealer here in my town. For all of you saying that those of us that had engine failure with our jeeps that we didn't take care of them, that is not true. The jeep engine has a flaw and the manufacturer should comp us for this. Having a vehicle fail at only 130,000 miles put me into major disarray as I have no family where I live or close and had to get to work daily which required bumming a ride and borrowing a friends car for a week until I could get a day (1 day) to find another vehicle to purchase. I had to rent a car to go look at vehicles even. Hence now I have car payments again. For as much as vehicles cost there is NO WAY that they should have engine failure at 130,000 miles. Needless to say I went from an EXTREMELY proud and happy Jeep owner to an EXTREMELY upset and disgruntled undrivable jeep owner. I also had other issues that, as I have done research, find are very common and expected on my model of jeep. My power window motor stopped working and I ended up having to Duct tape it up so it wouldn't rain in my jeep. It was a back window that didn't get frequent use as I rarely had anyone sit in the back. I had bearing problems with some front end bearings, my leather front seats did not wear well at all, and now the recall for the gas tank , which I can't get my jeep fixed because I would have to pay a tow truck to take it to the shop. So now when I go to sell it for parts, or if someone wants to fix it up, the recall of the gas tank could be a major issue with selling it. Such a shame to trust a "respected" brand and find out that lots of others have had the same issue and that the manufacturer will not make this right with us. I will NEVER own another Jeep and have since changed completely from US made vehicles to foreign made. My ratings are based on how the vehicle performed Before the motor blew up. I would recommend anyone that wants to purchase a Jeep to reconsider 7-13-2016 I was asked to update my review, the Jeep Liberty still sucks. Jeep should issue a recall for this issue of the motor blowing up at 130000 miles. Not signs of issues at all, just blew. DO NOT BUY A JEEP

One of the worse vehicles I have ever driven. I have only had my 2002 jeep for a year and i have had to replace the power steering 2 times, the oil had a leak in it so I had to fix that, we fixed the starter 2 months ago and now it won't start again, the heat went out in it and nobody can seem to find the problem with it. It is not a reliable vehicle and I wouldn't trust it.

I got this truck from my sister after I crashed my ford escape because she wanted to get a new car, it had about 207,000 and was in pretty good shape but about 2,000 miles later the engine started making noises and I wasn't sure waht it was so I took it to my friend who was good with cars and he told me that it was a knock which means that the engine is basically on its way out and it's gonna cost me $$$ to get the engine replaced and I already scraped the escape and handed over the title so I'm pretty much screwed, would've cost way less to repair my escape.

I bought the car used in august 2012, It had 150K+ miles on it I don't remember. At first I just needed a 4x4 in the winter in Spokane because the road can get bad. With no snow tires and basically all in part time 4x4 it handled flawlessly. Everything was perfect except for some creak in the driver door but hey. I didn't much care for the car but time and time again it blows me away. Infinity speakers, roomy and stylish inside and out. and Reliable. I even took it off road and I was impressed. have 170k in a few weeks and still strong. Got 12mpg in city at first but with K&N stock filter upgrade, new spark plugs, oil change and Seafoam It went to 15 1/2 mpg and over 21 on the HWY!

I purchased my 2002 liberty in 2004. I have loved this vehicle since I first purchased it, the maintanence cost have been very low, I have maintained this vehicle almost to perfection with regular oil changes etc. One day it stopped working with no warning, Come to find out the engine is blown, now with more research I am finding this is a known issue. I dont even have 109,000 miles on this vehicle, it is in almost perfect condition. Now I am stuck with a worthless vehicle that I cannot even trade in, I am very disappointed I would have purchased another Jeep in a heartbeat had this not happened, now I will never touch Chrysler/Jeep again.

Picked up my 2002 liberty from a family member that nurtures her vehicles. This problem child does not give up when it comes to costing me dollars for repairs. The list is long, and now a #2 cylinder valve issue. Obviously, Chrysler knows about this, but take sno action in resolving. Once I junk this pig, I will never touch another chrysler vehicle again. For the first 9+ years the Liberty did very well as far as liability, other than the several recalls. Even the original battery lasted 9 years. Then at about 90,000 it started to have problems. We had to rebuild the transmission at a cost of $3,400. There's a leak requiring new seals on the rear differential, and the HVAC fan resistor is shot so we only get speeds 3 and 4. After spending so much on the transmission we will go ahead and fix the rest, and try to get another 50,000 out of it but I'm not very optimistic. It is fun to drive, the body and interior are like new and it handles well in snow.

And now I only hope to replace my Liberty. No joke, I had a run-in with a semi and lost on a night in ND where the winds and rain were blowing over 50 mph. I bounced off of the underside of the trailer, totaled my Jeep, and did not even have a scratch. (Oh, by the way, the engine is perfectly fine!) While test driving other cars, trucks, and SUVs, I have not been able to find anything that has that snap and power I am looking for. I did my research here on Edmunds and other sites, and made sure all the ancient recall work was done before I bought it with 100,000 miles. I never had a problem! Sure it is thirsty at the pump, but I put it in my budget and dealt. I miss my Jeep!

This car just won't die!My wife has been driving hers for the past few years, now has 187k on it and still truckin'. We have had some issues, entire exhaust system, some front end work, but nothing huge and serious, knock on wood! We did have unresolved 4WD issues last winter...we will see about this one! Definitely a noisy ride, then again we have had exhaust issues. Theres also plenty of loose 'clunky' sounds that our mechanic cannot find, that make me a little nervous. I wouldn't label this car particularly reliable or unreliable. I will say its a blast to drive and has excellent pickup, and my car is 6 years newer. You would have to rip it out of my wife's hands for her to get rid of it!

am reporting review (138141727) (Jeep Engine Failures due to Valve Seats) because My daughter bought a 2002 Jeep Liberty 1 month ago. We changed the oil and I had her check it every two weeks since the vehicle was new to her. She did as I said for a couple weeks and said it used none. She is very diligent at watching her mileage to plan oil changes ever 3000 miles. She went to work and the engine started to knock. She checked the oil and found it 3 quarts low and got no low oil warning. We took it to a shop and it needs a new engine. We found out no reputable salvage yard wants to sell the engine due to a known oil gear issue, so they will not even warranty one with low miles. A rebuilt motor with the oil gear issue fixed costs $3200.00. With labor my daughter is looking at $4500.00 to replace an engine with only 119000 miles. I searched the internet on 2002 Jeep Liberty 3.7 engine. I found many complaints regarding the blown motor. The average seems to be 96000 miles. Many people online said they contacted jeep and they said they were SOL. I don't expect a new engine for nothing, but when the average vehicle today does 250000 miles by most manufacturers and Toyota is at 400000. I would like to see an American company doing everything it can to create customer loyalty. Thank You, Steve

We have had this Liberty for over 8 years. It's reliable, would drive it anywhere! For 8 years we've put new tires on, brakes, oil changes and that's it! It has not needed anything but normal maintenance nothing!! It's so easy to drive and park being small and there's only one thing I wish was different and that's the MPG, which can be helped some by driving sensibly.

We bought our 2002 Liberty fall 2009. Fixes in 2 1/2 years ...Water pump and radiator $800.00+, Rear Deferential seal and door hinge $300.00+, Front struts and rear shocks $600.00+ and i did the labor myself, a rocker arm fell off and caused engine damage (a common problem in all Liberty's still!) $2100.00+, Eats front brakes and rotors, Interior lights come on and go off by themselves, Lower ball joints break (factory recall) Fuel mileage sucks. Tranny does a goofy shifting thing going down the interstate at cruising speeds. (I don't know the cause of the shifting issue.) All this before or by the time it was a 10 year old vehicle that was well maintained. My first and LAST Jeep/Chrysler!

I bought this car off a 3-year lease in March 2005, so I've had it for 7 years. It's been a great vehicle! I've put little to no money into it, just your normal oil changes, tires, tuneups, ect. The only issues I've had with it is the AC and the rear window defogger. The AC hasn't worked since about 2007, I've tried fixing it numerous times with no luck. Same thing with the rear window defogger, no luck fixing it. It has never broken down on me. My only major complaint I have is the gas mileage, I can only get about 17-19 on the highway. But, I knew that when I bought it so I shouldn't complain.

I have had two 2002 Libertys. A blue sport that I wrecked about a year ago. It was my first car. It had under 100k miles on it and ran like a dream. I had a back window part replaced due to the window not staying up and the ac fixed one time but that's it. My accident was my fault not the car's. My new Liberty, a black limited 4x4 of the same year is leaking and the ac has broken on it numerous times. I miss my original one and hate the mess ups with this one. Overall, as a brand and a car, I love them and never regret getting one.

I bought a 2002 Jeep liberty as a pre owned car. Older lady drove it. So far we had no major problem except the engine light stays on. Took it to auto parts store did test and it said fuel cap. replaced that 3 times. Nothing. took it to dealer same result, they checked the car and found nothing told me fuel cap again. Bought another cap from them and light is still on. At 114000 miles it seems to start taken more and more gas..wet roads are also not a good thing. other then that I like to drive it and its been a good car so far

Everything about this SUV is great. It is very maneuverable and short enough to park in tight spaces. Never had a problem with it that I didn't cause. I have it lifted 2.5" and I would definitely recommend lifting it, it looks way better and handles better. The only thing they could have done different is that they could have put a 4.0 or a V8 in it because the 3.7 is a little small for the Liberty's weight. I would say if they had matched the engine with the weight the Lib would get far better mileage. This is a great SUV that can handle just about anything you through at it. I would definitely recommend it to anyone used, but you have to get a mechanic to look at it beforehand.

We bought our Jeep when it was 3 years old. At the time we bought it, the air conditioner was broken & the engine light was on, making it hard to get inspected in PA. Everything started going on it, the head busted twice, kept stalling at low RPM, window switches broke, door locks broke, gear shift stuck all the time, and the problems go on and on. Finally the engine blew, and I wasn't paying to get it fixed so it's sitting in my driveway if anyone wants it! I'll never own another Jeep as long as I live. We bought a 2008 Ford Explorer and just recently a Dodge Nitro praying we don't have problems with the Dodge like we did the Jeep.

This is my 3rd Jeep- bought all of them new. The Liberty is a 2002 and only has 54,000 miles. So far, had 3 batterys- two sets of tires, Air conditioning needed to be replaced, Exhaust System and Muffler needed to be replaced at 50K miles and NOW the Catalytic Converter needs to be replaced! NEVER drove off-road- looking at the miles, the truck is not driven that much at all-Well maintained, oil changes every 3000 miles. Do not understand the poor quality. Having owned Jeeps in the past I have something to compare this one with. Would like something to be done about this... Very disappointed with the rust under the Garage kept, barely driven SUV.

I bought my Liberty in 2007 and it has been the best car I have ever owned. When I bought the Jeep it had 100K on it but I was on a limited budget and purchased an extended warranty. I never even had to use the warranty. I have not had 1 problem with this car! I have put over 40k on my Jeep and it is still more reliable than any car I've ever owned. I wouldn't be scared to drive this car anywhere I had to go on the spur of the moment. If you're nervous of how many miles a Liberty can get on it- I am at 143k and still going strong!!!

I bought my Jeep Liberty in 2002 and have placed at least 110 miles on at least 4 days a week ever since. It's been a very reliable vehicle and seems to be built for longevity. I have approx. 144,000 miles on it now and hope to take it all the way to 200,000. It's well maintained, which I think makes all the difference with any vehicle. it's not a luxury vehicle by any means, but it's good for everyday driving. Not the greatest on gas!

I've had this vehicle since August of 2003 and can only say it's INCREDIBLE. I've only had minor problems with it, a couple sensors that cost me about $35 each ( using my own CODE reader I got on ebay for $10 and finding the problem myself ) and installed in myself minutes. Fan belt started going at 19000, replaced free. Replaced muffler and front brakes so far at 100,000 and did ALL maintenance at the proper time. Doing this has kept it MINT, engine is almost new looking also as very little dirt gets in there. Since I installed a Hydrogen system ( 3 month process ) I'm getting about 5mpg better than before so no reason to get a smaller vehicle for Gas' sake. LOVE IT.

I have a BMW with performance tires, so I needed a vehicle to drive in the winter. Purchased this car with about 85k miles on the odometer. I love my Jeep and drive it more than the BMW. Love the driving position, looks and its maneuverability. Very few service complaints. I have never owned a vehicle with so many miles, yet it is still very tight and rattle free. Would consider buying another Liberty like this one with fewer miles if this one ever starts giving me trouble. A great value for a used vehicle.

Got this SUV with 60K has 125K now ZERO mechanical problems! I've have replaced brake pads, battery and Tires and changed oil like clock work. Never serviced tranny. The only problems i've had are more like annoyances than problems. I have a light out in my instrument cluster. I can still see everything but the 80 Mph mark is a little dim. At about 115K my AC/Heat fan control started only working on the highest setting and i haven't had the time to pull the console apart to find the lose connection. It still works great though it will cook/freeze you. Window control placement bugs cuz it's on the door in your other car your hand will go for the controls for the car that your not in everytime.

I bought my Jeep in 04 used with 29,000 miles on it(now with 126k). I have loved it until last fall (2008), when the air & heat quite working. I took it to a mechanic late winter & after spending around $800 for a new thermostat, new switch, system flush, and then actuator & mode doors, it still didn't work. I took it to another mechanic, told him what the other did, & he went through it again & put another new mode body & actuator on it & isn't sure it will work. There has been no Jeep recalls on it or posts. I am at a lose. This is my 3rd Jeep, & I am a little frustrated with this issue. It has been paid for for awhile & I wasn't ready to trade it. Other than this it has been great!

We recently sold our 2002 Jeep Liberty Sport 4x4 but only because we wanted to purchase a hybrid before gas prices rise again. We still miss it, especially when we see another one in town! The only mechanical work required besides regular maintenance and new tires occurred at the end of a vacation. It lost all power and wouldn't remain running, the locks were possessed, power steering gone, no radio, etc. It turns out it only needed a new battery! The only area that could use improvement is in highway handling (keeping it on the road). My husband had more difficulty with this than I did but sometimes it was exhausting to drive at 65 mph and above, especially if there was a crosswind.

I had good luck with my Jeep Liberty for the first year that I owned it, but a year later the speed sensor went bad and I had it fixed. Four-five months later it went bad again-had it repaired. Four months later, bad again. At this time took it to manufacturing dealership for repair. $256 later and the following day, it went bad again!! I keep being told this is not normal on these models so maybe I am lucky enough to have gotten one with a manufacturing defect. It is pretty bad on gas mileage and can't wait to get a different vehicle. I was actually on my way to look at one, hoping to get good trade in value on Jeep when sensor went bad again. At 85,000 miles now.

Was great til 3 yrs later, even though we keep up on all maintenance on it. It started as problems with the engine light on, then started running hard and blowing blue smoke out the exhaust. The smog place gave us a report back with over 10 codes that was causing it to fail! We brought it to several mechanics and all agreed the engine was bad. Luckily I got in inheritance and we were able to pay 8,000 to put a rebuilt engine and some other minor parts in otherwise we'd have had to let it sit while we paid it off then junked it, and now the oil light still comes one even thought its not loosing oil pressure. Turns out its an electrical problem. My opinion, don't get a liberty. MPG also stinks.

Well I was fooled, in the three years i owned it i spend just as much TRYING to repair it as i spend on the vehicle itself. Problems included, speedo, windows not closing, stalling on low RPMs, and more. Well the motor blew and i couldn't be happier. Thats right, happier to move on to none Jeep/Chrysler product. This has been a great vehicle for me. This vehicle is great for off road and it has enough power to pull a boat. No fast but does very well. Since I bought it I’ve only changed the tires and brakes, the cooling fan ($70.00) and a battery. I have been amazed by the reliability of this Jeep. To be honest I did not expect this from a “Jeep”. The Jeep Grandcherokee is not this reliable. I had one before I bought the Liberty.

My 2002 Liberty Limited has served me well since I purchased it. Only minor (and mostly normal) issues have arisen in the past 40k miles (+/-). It's got great off road ability and its very fun to drive! My only cons about the Jeep are the gas mileage, interior design, and comfort of the ride for the passengers. Overall, it's a great vehicle for these 122k miles so far!

We bought this new in 2002. In six years, the only two items that have failed are the A/C compressor ($1100) and a battery. Not bad considering we do quite a bit of off-roading, and tow a 1000 pound pop-up camper. The Liberty is easy to drive, easy to park, looks good, and is great off- road. The mileage is only about 18 around town, but if you want 3 more miles per gallon you should consider one of those cute little "SUVs" that are built on a Toyota Corolla chassis. I've seen those get stuck in a gravel driveway. The Liberty is the real thing off road, but does just as well in a Wal-mart parking lot (more dangerous than the Kalahari, by far).

Mechanical issues from start. Stalled, would not start, transmission slippage, major tire problems with Goodyear tires, very noisy. Dealership consistently denied problems. I now see that my problems are a common occurrence with this vehicle. Finally was able to get a dealership mechanic to admit to me that the 02 year of this vehicle has many issues as it was the first year made. At least that was validation of my problem but does not resolve my problems. By the way, dealership still refuses to acknowledge what mechanic confirmed.

What an amazing vehicle this is. I purchased it used from the original owner and have not put a great deal of miles on it (so I have yet to see long term reliability). This is a true SUV with luxury appointments for interior comfort. It motivated a cross country power on the freeway and capable for trip and did not disappoint. Great the off road excursion along the way.

I initially bought this suv to fix up my credit and wanted to upgrade to an suv. I bought it at 27k+ and was satisfied at first. As I began to drive it more and more it disappointed more and more. The suspension and road noise is unbearable at times, but in its defense I do like it on the highway and I am happy about the power from the 3.7l engine. However road noise can't be drowned out by the pitiful speaker system and the window controls are located in a awkward position. Gas has come down from $4 to under $2 but still feel that it should do better overall. I would Rather buy a highlander or pilot that seats 7-8 and get the same gas mileage plus have the reliability and history that comes.

Loved this jeep when I bought it. Live in major snowbelt and does great job in snow. In last year fuel injection blew, back window latch broke, and yesterday transmission died. Time to get rid of the thing. Was fun while it lasted. Customer service is terrible with jeep-their garage did a tire rotation and only tightened lugs to one tire completely. Drove away and then disaster happened. Chrysler headquarters did not want to hear from me on this incident and said it was between me and the dealership. That attitude and lack of concern would deter me from a jeep purchase in the future even if it was a well made product.

It's decent.

I used to build show cars and trucks but I ended up leaving all that for a stock vehicle. I bought the liberty a few years ago, have not been to happy with it to be honest. all the a/c vents have broken and fallen out, need repair. The light in where the shift column went out and i have to bump the box for it to come on (short in wire). A/c, radiator, window regulators, overhead light, radio wire all needed to be replaced. The driver and passenger seat levers broke off in my hand trying to lean back. I have been trying to sell it for the past 7 months. I have 108k miles on it now and it makes a weird sound when i turn at low speeds.

I bought my Liberty brand new in 2002. It has been on two cross-country trips, one of them being a Jeep Jamboree off-roading event. I was the only Liberty out of 125 vehicles! My Liberty handled it all! I've replaced the battery, replaced the serpentine belt, and had a problem with the AC/heat fan. Other than that, it's only been routine maintenance. The mileage isn't the best, but I don't care. It's great in the winter, especially when I head up to Wisconsin in the snow. It's got the comfort of an auto, but with the feel of a truck. I did get truck tires for my Liberty and I'm very happy with that purchase. I will NEVER go back to a car!

My first Jeep, love the look, the interior was comfortable, gas mileage average. Tight steering, needs a little more hp in certain situations. Never had more compliments on a car before, in particular the color, salsa red, hot! Drawbacks, 2 big ones, the engine blew at 40,000 miles, never off road with it, oil changed every 3000. Good thing for the warranty, the bill was almost $9000. But the craziest thing about this car, is the battery, I have had 10 or more batteries since I bought it. Every time I take it in for service, they say its normal! Batteries last 12 to 18 months, that's a new one on me. Overall, I'm buying a new Jeep, with the skyslider roof!

I have had this Jeep for about 6 years and it has been fun. The only trouble that I have had is replacing the cam shaft sensor and O2 sensor ($78 max). I suggest getting a new intake system, the stock intake is heavy (15 lbs) and bulky. Also, to make life easier for the people who cry about fuel, just replace the fuel pump with a performance pump ($330) in order for you to be able to get what you want. I now get 27 mpg/19 mpg, and yes, thats on the 3.7 6cyl 4wd model.

I've gotten 26 mpg on the highway. I put a 2.5" lift kit on it to run bigger 245/75/16 snow tires. The Jeep liberty is really nice. I bought it for the off roading features but it can hardly handle anything. I buried mine on a two track in maybe a half foot of water. The four wheel drive shaft is not very strong. I think Jeep came out with this vehicle so everyone can own a Jeep. I love this vehicle cause of two main reasons 1. Easy to drive 2. Very reliable. The four wheel drive got me out of countless puddles. I do not suggest this vehicle for off roading though.

I loved my Jeep up until about 6 months ago. It is the cutest small SUV out there and when I first saw it I just had to have it. Then about a couple of months ago a lot of things started going wrong. Taillight (although not a big deal), then the catalytic converter, then the window regulator in the rear passenger window broke, and finally the icing to the cake, the AC is now broken at the beginning of a hot summer. I've also had the battery replaced because it became corroded. My outlets and rear wiper started not working and it revs for odd reasons that they "can't figure out". Total gas guzzler as well. I'm trying to get rid of this thing fast, but no one is biting for the obvious reasons.

I bought my Liberty brand new in 2002. Only has 37,500 miles to date. First major issue to report-- A/C compressor totally choked this summer--2 weeks in the shop, Compressor reported on "National Backorder". Quote to fix $1050 dollars. Chrysler will not help-- noting Jeep is out of warranty. Note-- only 1500 miles out of warranty when the A/C breaks. Despite 4-5 recalls to date, brakes needing readjusted, dead battery replaced, A/C Compressor breakdown and a slighly leaky sunroof-- I still like my Jeep. Chrysler should be happy--they have not done so great on this model.

My wife loved this Jeep from the beginning, every year her love has lessened to the point now where she would give it away. Numerious problems, most not covered under manufacturers warranties. We've "sunk" several thousands of dollars into this beast. Gas mileage is worse than a RR!

My 2002 Jeep Liberty is a great family vehicle - we can pull our camper or boat - a pig on gas but at 2200000 km it has given NO PROBLEMS - except a few recalls we never received because of resales - balljoint.... I know hear a loud "ping" sound when the Jeep idles after driving... anyone heard this before....

I love just about everything about this SUV, which is why I'm so disappointed that it's starting to cost me a lot of money in repairs after only 4 years. I have put more than $3000 into this vehicle in both maintenance and repairs in just the last 12 months. The little plastic piece that covers the gear shift broke in the cold this winter (over $300 to fix), the AC doesn't work and needs to have the compressor replaced ($1000 to fix). I am trying to decide whether I should trade it in for a 2007 model just to stop the budget bleeding even though I have a year left of payments on it, or trade it in for an Xterra instead. The biggest factor in my decision will be the (un)reliability aspect.

76000 miles on a 4 cylinder and it's still doing well. Almost paid off, and no problems, except for a leaky windshield that the dealer tried to fix 4 times, but the leak is minor, and I gave up.

I got this Liberty as a 2nd car. I am a teenager. Although the body isn't my ideal style I must say that as a young driver I do beat on the truck pretty bad. The Jeep holds up great. I brought it to Jeep and it had no recomendations. I have only had one problem with it and that is the blower motor, cost about $25 to fix. This truck holds up to my friends and I and is a fun little car. It's great in all weather and is very safe. The compact size makes it easy to drive and its built tough. Good work Jeep!

My Liberty is 4 years old. We have had nothing but problems. No A/C since July, a condenser problem. Rear differential seal leak, transfer case leak, window regulator went bad, tail light filled up with water and shorted out the electrical system, 2 ball joint recall notices. And the gas mileage? On a good day, 18mpg. NEVER AGAIN. I'm going for Kia or Hyundai next vehicle. My 12 year old Honda Civic with 125,000 is a more reliable vehicle.

Good looking vehicle that makes me nervous to drive on paved roads. The brakes and suspension are not well tuned to street driving. No confidence whatsoever in maneuvering this truck in urban or freeway driving. Brakes take forever to slow it down, and in the event that you need to avoid an obstacle you're better off plowing into it rather than trying to turn. I drove a Cherokee previously, and the big difference seems to be the added weight of the Liberty. The weak 3.7 V6 moves this boat slower than a 10 year old Civic. Not recommended for people that enjoy driving. Look for a used RX300 instead.

My Liberty is a very handsome vehicle, but they can be handsome all day long and it won't help you much if they are in the shop with something wrong, like tail lights that fill up with water, differential seal leaks, ball joint problems, A/C problems, windows that fail to go up and down all at the tender age of 4. And gas mileage that really stinks. Come on Jeep, you can do better than this.

I loved the retro Liberty style and bought it in spite of my fears about Jeep's "not so good" reliability record. I have been pleasantly surprised. The interior and exterior designs are unique and done exceptionally well. I've owned sports cars mostly so comfort and handling is exactly where I want it. Reliability has been the real surprise. I've replace the ignition key cylinder and that's been the only issue; really minor based on what other vehicles have. I have been completely satisfied and will probably purchase another one next year.

If you're looking for good gas mileage, look elsewhere - all other car makers can put their small SUV mileage at an average of 20 MPG. The Liberty is at around 16 MPG. I love the vehicle otherwise; it epitomizes the Jeep philosophy, but the mileage stinks. I have to get rid of it because I am a stay-at-home mom now and can't afford to run around town at $50 per week. It's a shame - again, I love it.

This car is very well made. I have had it for almost 4 years and never had trouble with the car, nor has any of the trim fallen off or failed. I would keep this car a very long time if it weren't for the gas mileage - not so great. I average 12mpg +/- in city driving. That's the only negative to a great small SUV.

Overall a good vehicle. The engine has a lot of pinging and knocking which cannot be done away with. Steering is very touchy and gas is horrible (15-16 mpg average). It is hard to get non-Mopar accessories to fit the rear hitch due to the spare tire sticking out so far. I also wish I had the color matched flares and bumpers because they are starting to fade. Seats are a little uncomfortable too. I find my lower back gets tight after more than 45 minutes of driving.

Not too much to say, other than I'll never buy another Chrysler product again. It only took 102,000 miles and the engine is blown. I was quoted $3,500 to replace it with a junkyard engine with 50k miles on it. I bought a used one with 400 miles on it and had installed by my brother (who is a service tech). My final cost was $1,200. It will be put up for sale immediately before something else goes wrong. The gas mileage is terrible for a six cylinder. I'm lucky if I get 17 mpg on the highway. Never again. I'll be buying imports for the rest of my life.

I bought my Liberty from a private owner in 2003. I have absolutely enjoyed my Jeep and hope it has a long life. Currently, it has 53,000 miles on it. The only major issue I had with my Jeep was that I had to have the entire steering column (rack) replaced because of a loose pin and a leaking seal. The dealership quoted me a price somewhere around $3,000, but fortunately, I had the extended warranty and the cost was covered. Moon roof motor also had to be replaced under warranty. Only complaint that I have is the service I've received at multiple Jeep dealerships.

Fuel economy could be much better but utility, reliability and fun can't be beat. Lived in NYC 2 years with it and so easy to park and maneuver. One set of brakes and change oil religiously. Made a mistake on second set of tires, should have stayed with originals. I would recommend, no worries Just lost A/C compressor other than that has been very reliable. I bought this truck to be used on bad roads every day and through bad New England winters. I am really impressed by how solid and off-road capable it is. It is amazing in off road winter conditions with a good set of AT tires. I don't even bother shoveling the driveway during the winter any more. It has nice power and is very easy to drive and park. Nice interior, good heating/cooling, good price. However, here is the down side: gas mileage is pretty bad, at 10,000 miles the electric window failed, at 30,000 miles the transmission needed to be replaced. I still haven't gotten use to the center mounted window controls. Given the failed transmission, I'm not sure I'd buy another one.

My Jeep is fun to drive and I have gotten a lot of compliments on it since I bought the vehicle in 10/01. It handles very well and can turn on a dime. The main issues I have had include rust around the middle of the wheels, which they said was due to water erosion, and a power steering rack that leaks power steering fluid. I have recently been told I have to replace the steering rack (54K miles) and it will cost $500 for the part and $500 for labor! Other garages have quoted me same. An extended warranty may of helped me but seems it should be covered anyways. I have also have a seat belt that seems to stick a bit. Overall happy with the vehicle but think the steering rack issue is a bit much.

The Jeep is a wonderful vehicle to have in winter; most times if you go off the road when slippery, put it in low range and get back on while cars are gonna sit and wait for a tow-truck. The Jeep gives me a feeling of safety when the weather is bad, as I can pull out of my driveway, with a foot of snow on the ground, in 4 wheel drive, and not spin a wheel. While doing this, my radio, with an awesome sound keeps me smiling!

Bought my Liberty new and enjoyed it for first six months or so despite the design that makes it sound like a helicopter with windows open. Since then have had repeated electric problems -- dome light short, power window short, cd player quit working. The final straw is an automatic transmission that had to be rebuilt at only 50,000 miles with no abnormal driving conditions. The dealer was not helpful with this. Because of all of these issues, I won't purchase another Jeep product.

I have the stripped down version; no A/C, no power anything, manual transmission. However, 3.7liter V6, is great. I have no engine or transmission problems at all. Gas mileage could be a bit higher, but ... it's a Jeep which also accounts for a bit of a bumpy ride. Unlike other small SUV's this one can go off roading a little better and I feel safer to get back home ... it's a Jeep. One problem I had is the back window will not open sometimes. Since I do not have power anything, the only way to get it open is with the key on the handle. It stuck on me several times, intermittent though. Kids fit great in the back seat, plus I can haul stuff too. Overall, great vehicle for the price.

I bought my Liberty when they first came out. I was two weeks shy of getting the 100,000 warranty which really irked me. I love to drive my Liberty. It's great for one or two passengers, but would be too small in the back seat for a larger family. The lack of legroom in the back is my only real issue, but that allows for a lot of cargo room in a relatively small SUV. I have had no significant problems except for two: My radio dies and replacement tires are too expensive!

I feel much safer in my Liberty than I did in my 3 previous Honda Accords. My Liberty feels solid and sturdy. I did replace the original tires after 15K miles because of sliding on wet roads and I am on my third set of brake pads BUT that is to be expected from a 4000 lb. vehicle. Other than that, no problems. After trading vehicles every three years in the past I have vowed to keep my Liberty for eight years. After a good washing it still looks brand new. My Liberty survived a fierce hail storm. I expected the windshield to be shattered but, no damage. Days later I heard advertisements for "damage and dent sales" at many local dealerships. So far I'm quite impressed!

Doing it over again, I wouldn't buy a Liberty. It is a gas hog; I get about 15 miles per gallon. Plus, I experience chronic electronic problems. For instance, I pulled over for a failed left turn and brake lamp. I got home, and the light worked fine. The dome light goes on and off, and the turn signal occasionally turns on and won't go off without stopping and restarting the engine. There is also a slip in the transmission. When I brake, it down-shifts violently. I take it in, they hook it to a computer, and it works fine for a few months. Then, it gradually comes on again.

I love driving this Jeep! It handles and brakes extremely well and is fun to drive. I have had no mechanical repairs with 80,000 miles. The paint was quick to chip though. The cost to own is very low. The cargo area is a bit small and fuel mileage is lower than it should be for a small SUV. For a $27,000 SUV, it was an excellent value. I would recommend this Jeep for small families with limited hauling or trailering needs.

On the positive side I've gotten to know the mechanics at the local dealership much better since this ill- begotten purchase. I have an old Ford Ranger with 155,000 miles which still gives me far fewer problems then this money pit Jeep Liberty. Bearings, transfer case, air conditioner, bearings again, and a new vibration just caused me to drop this junk off again. I purchased this Limited as a lease return. The vehicle has been a very reliable SUV. I had previously owned a classic Cherokee Limited. The Liberty makes the old Cherokee look like a hay wagon. A very comfortable ride and roomy interior. I am 6'3" and 250 lbs and don't feel pinched in the drivers seat. I've put 40k+ miles on it in 2 years and it has never left me stranded on the roadside. Very good off-road performance on some nasty rocky trails in the Sierra. Pretty good in the snow. Driven it in 50 knot winds with rain and the part-time 4WD works just great. Instruments are straight forward without the "gimmicks" of the Japanese SUV's. Room enough in the back for my 100 lb. Golden Retriever.

From another "saved my life" story. My wife and I were rear ended by a drunk driver. We hardly sustained any damage to the back of the Jeep, and besides a few muscle aches, we came out just fine. The drunk driver totaled her Ford Taurus in the process. I had my Liberty for 4 years now, and other than a few minor cosmetic issues with a new model vehicle in the beginning, I would buy another Liberty in a heartbeat. I recommend this SUV to anyone looking for a good quality 4X4 at a great price. Honda and Toyota price comparables can't even begin to touch the off road capability this vehicle has, let alone their higher priced models.

Overall I love my Jeep, I have never liked the feel of the transmission (4 speed auto). Shifts hard. Tows nice, cargo space somewhat limited though. My wife has a 2002 Escape, and my Liberty is quieter, feels more solid, has better build quality and rides a lot smoother.

The Liberty is a lot of fun to drive and is a rock solid vehicle. Very quiet at highway speed and a smooth ride. The handling is responsive but could use a little more get up and go when you hit the gas to pass someone ... probably because it's a heavy vehicle. Interior is well thought out, practical and finished nicely.

We bought this Jeep when it was a year old with under 20,000 on the clock. We initially had problems where the speedometer stopped working; this was fixed under warranty after the 3rd attempt. Since then the Jeep has been very reliable and is now approaching 40,000 miles. Its been excellent in the winter with the snow and is a true SUV. The engine is smooth and quiet and its nice to drive on long trips. My major complaint is the gas mileage is poor. If Toyota/Lexus can manage to produce excellent mileage from the Highlander/RX330 from a 6 cylinder engine then surely Jeep could improve in this area!

Manual shift lever for Part-time 4WD, Full-time 4WD, and 4WD Low is difficult to operate. Oftentimes, it is finicky getting it in, and out, of Full-time 4WD (all wheel drive). At 65K miles, transmission 3RD gear valve body screws broke. Dealer service said that the bolts were deemed not strong for the application. Still haven't seen a recall for that! Seems that Jeep isn't as reliable as it once was. Reliability is more like that of a typical Chrysler product. They've fixed something that wasn't broke. Fuel economy (15-17 mpg) Stinks! Blind spots abound.

American car companies make the best SUVs and the Jeep Liberty fits the bill. The tires are a little slippery on wet roads and the gas mileage could be improved. This attractive model has great interior design and spacing for a small SUV. I know a lot of people complain about the position of the window switches, but I have adjusted ok. I've only received one recall to date. Of course the true test will be how well it runs after it's paid off.

Bought it used with 41,000 miles on it. Have had no problems, have not had to have any repairs so far. Very roomy even with full passenger load, but not a lot of cargo space. Handles better than any 4WD we have ever owned, We have taken it places others would not dare go. Just wish it would be better on gas, very low gas mileage for a V6. Tends to get around 16-17 mpg. Other than that would recommend to anyone.

I have had problems with the Jeep's skidding on even slightly wet pavement; replacing the tires with the best all-weather Michelins did not help. The steering is very sensitive, which does not help. I did have a rollover with this car, and was able to 'walk away', but the Jeep was totaled.

I bought my 02 Liberty used. It's a Sport model with the 3.7L, auto and 4WD. The only problem I have had with it is a throttle positioning sensor going bad which was very easy to replace. Since I've owned the vehicle I've added 42,000 miles to it along with lifting it, adding aftermarket skid plates, larger wheels and tires and upgrading the sound system. I haven't had a bit of trouble with it and it keeps up just as well on the trails with anything out there.

First, this vehicle came with a poor choice of tires (Wrangler ST) so I upgraded after 18m miles to the larger, fatter Firestone Destination LE (yes Firestone) tires. For $350.00, it TOTALLY changed the way I feel about my Jeep. I love it. My family of just 3 went out to AZ with Seadoo in tow in June and the Liberty did just great up and down hills and through the desert from South Texas to Lake Havasu City (1200 miles each way). It carried all our luggage, lake gear, vhs, toolboxes, chests, etc. with no obstruction in back window and 60/40 back seat flipped down. Absent "slippery in rain" tire issue, this Jeep has given me zero problems. As for gas, its an SUV!!! Great towing capability!

I love driving this vehicle. Its the stopping that is the problem. It weighs too much not to have ABS standard. I just had my front brakes replaced at 25K miles! 4-5 recalls is not alot on a brand new model, but these were significant recalls. The tires are junk. I still have some miles on mine, but I am getting them replaced early because they are unsafe on even damp roads. Other than those gripes I love this vehicle and will buy another one if these items have been improved.

Jeep has serves me well. Used in Arizona/New Jersey in all sorts of weather/road conditions. Pros: Excellent aircon; Comfortable ride; Unpainted fender and bumpers on sport model still look new even though bumped and scratched; Reliable: only replaced rear window motor under warranty and ball joints (recall). Replacing engine and transmission oil is important to great running; Brakes are good good but keep in mind weight of vehicle on wet/icy roads. Cons: must slow down in wet; mediocre Premium CD/radio

I love my little Liberty! I have had it for 2 and 1/2 years and it has only been in the shop for routine oil changes and the recall for ball joint. No problems with heating, cooling or anything. I totally enjoy this vehicle. It could have a little more trunk space but then it wouldn't be the sporty little SUV that it is. I do have to say that I really dislike Daimler Chrysler for the customer no-service. The ball joint recall letter never arrived and the telephone folks are abysmal. Probably would think long and hard before I buy another one of their products. But I do love my Liberty and hopefully will continue too.

I have had no problems with this little SUV except with the breaks. I had to get my rotors smoothed the first year and I have slid/had brakes lock at least 3 TIMES in wet weather. Never had an accident in my life but the lack of ABS and the weight of this car make it dangerous. I have hit both the left and right front tires on curbs causing hundreds of dollars of repairs and once slid right into an intersection. The skid has been recreated by others driving my Liberty. Repeated trips to the dealership and they say nothing is wrong (grinding the rotors first year is normal?)

This is our first SUV and has proven to be a fun and reliable vehicle. As far as gas mileage, I can't understand all the negative comments, no SUV will not do any better than the Liberty, in fact usually less. We are running Mobil 1 synthetic oil and get 21 1/2 miles per gallon on the road, not bad.

We bought one of the first Jeep Libertys available in July 2001 and have been pretty happy with it ever since. We love it for its size and stylish design. Only serious complaint is the fact that ours did not come with antilock brakes and it has slid on barely wet roads and in the snow even in 4WD. Once slid through an entire intersection on a road that could maybe pass for damp...luckily no one else was intersecting at the time. Gas mileage is what finally set us back and we have decided to trade it in.

I owned and 1990 Cherokee with 150k miles on it when I bought my Green V6 4WD Automatic Jeep Liberty Sport in May 2002, and what an upgrade it is! I have had no issues with the vehicle whatsover. Steers simply and more carlike than many competitors, and handling is very straightforward. It is super sure footed in the winter, and a breeze to drive on and off-road in the spring, summer, and fall. The front seats are comfortable enough to drive between New York City and Columbus Ohio without much discomfort. It is great to tool around town, and it has safely taken me through feet of snow in the mountains of West Virginia.

After 33000 miles, the Liberty is still easy to like. However, it has been in the shop far too many times. And it still has a small engine running problem that no one seems to be willing or able to fix, even after repeated attempts. Equipped with UNSAFE, terrible tires from the factory. This vehicle is solid from inside to out. I have had no problems with my Jeep during the 37,000 I've driven it. It performs very well on road, a smoother ride than a Jeep Wrangler but not as smooth as the Jeep Cherokee. Off road, it is a Jeep and obviously gets the job done. The Liberty has a tow rating of 5,000 pounds and in the few times I've towed a packed 8 ft. U- Haul trailer it has performed well. The inside of the Liberty is roomy and the contols are very well layed out. The seats are not as cushioned as I would like, but the overall look and feel of the interior makes up for it.

So far, my car had the following failures: replaced front left strut tower (when was brand new), replaced radio, replaced rear differential housing, replaced fuel pump, 4-5 recalls. This car has only 40,000 miles, and most of the fixes done when it was new. I have never encountered such low build quality. The vehicle is very cute and fun to drive. However, I've had my vehicle for over a year and have had the heater break twice, the cd player replaced, the hinges on my tailgate window replaced, the transmission is beginning to fail (32k on the car) and 8 trips to the dealership still cannot pinpoint a grinding noise in my right front wheel. Oh, and the remote keyless entry comes with some random code where sometimes you press once to unlock and sometimes it takes 5 pushes of the button.. or 6 or 7..depending on its mood I guess.

More problems in 2 years than my Cherokee had in 11. Bought it for NE winters, doesn't like cold. Sounds like a diesel first 1/2 mile after a 0 deg. start ("they all do that"). Pwr St. pump screams 1-2 sec. Draft under the dash not fixed in 2 winters. Recalled for airbag wire and replace LOWER BALL JOINTS! Steering moans when hot. Suspension creaks & groans cold & hot. Leather worn after very gentle use (pass. seat used maybe once a week). Wicked in cross wind-constant corrections. Door lock won't open <15 deg. Trans whine. Usually keep cars 10+ years, will replace this after 2. Live in a cold climate? insist on an extended test drive in winter.

We bought this truck for ICS chili cookoff trips. I added a Wilderness rack by Garvin, (Rocky Road Outfitters) to add more room. I love the on road (55100 miles) and the off road capabilities of this truck. The full- frame/unibody construction makes it tight and strong, yet it can flex better than ANY SUV in its class. The future of my Liberty is bright. There will be an ARB bull bar bumper and winch added for sure. Maybe a Rocky Road OTT 2.5" suspension Lift and some real tires (see below). Anyway, we will be keeping this Jeep for many many years! BTW... I get 20mpg fully loaded, with a Wilderness rack on the roof, when I am on the highway.

My wife and I had recently purchased a home that required a lot of work. Also, our lifestyle is one of skiing, hiking, biking riding, etc. At the time, we owned two sedans (BMW 3 series & Camry). We dumped the Camry and purchased the Jeep Liberty with hopes that the Liberty would hold all the stuff we were to buy at Home Depot for the house and our gear as we headed out for adventure. It has fufilled these requirements and them some. We truly enjoy the ride, power of the 6 cyclinder and all the other features.

It's really a great JEEP!

I bought this car when they first came out despite being hesitant about buying a new model. I have had it for over 2 years, putting 50k miles on it already and it still looks like new, drives like new, and I LOVE IT! People complain about the fuel economy, but I drive in heavy city traffic commuting every day and still get over 18 mpg -- certainly not great mileage, but pretty good for an suv, small or otherwise. I can honestly say that there is not another suv out there I would take in its place, whether small, big, luxury or economical.

This is a vast improvement over my '86 Ford F-150. I like the nimbleness and it's abilities in sand and mud. I've gone places with it that were bogging payloaders down. The seats (front) are comfortable, though a bit high for my 6'2" hight. The visor does not allow me to see traffic signals when I use it. Good power. Solid in it's feel. Quick handling. Short overhang, front and rear are great. Spoiled by heated seats and side mirrors. Pretty good sound system. I like it better than the Audi at work.

My husband bought my Jeep for me on my 35 birthday. Fully loaded. And I love everything about it. I drive from the Country into Town everyday. 60 miles round trip and it a great ride. People ask me why didn't I get a car. My response I don't like sitting on the ground. My kids and their friends think I have the coolest SUV in the neighborhood. Since it is red, we put the Red Hawaiian print seat covers. Looks like a real beach Suv.When I bought my jeep I had the only one in my town now they are everywhere.

We have been quite happy with our Liberty. We have had very few problems (rear hatch window blew out, power locks cycling, brake sqeak. All repaired without incident. This Jeep has amazing off-road ability. It will climb a rock strewn creek bed better in 2WD than than other brands in 4WD. Amazing. This is the my 9th 4x4 I have owned. My biggest disappointment is the fuel economy. I get the same highway mileage as my I did with my 93 GMC Suburban. To me this inexcusable. I know that a full size Chevy 4WD extended pickup delivers a real 2-3 mpg better than my Liberty. If it wasn't for the poor mileage I would have given our Liberty a much higer rating.

This is not a vehicle for folks who want the immenities of a Lincoln Town Car but have more room. The Liberty is a Jeep through and through and doesn't pretend to be anything else. The Liberty gives you anything you could ask for in the "utility" department (handling, room, features, dependabilty). I have had no complaints regarding anything dealing with the functionality of the Liberty. Plus, it is one of the most dependable vehicles I have ever owned. Avg 17 mpg, but that is the exact rating, can't complain. Summary: dependable, functional, fun, comfortable, inexpensive.

I live on a mountain top and the road is almost "off road." I've had Subarus, but wanted something different. Fell in love with the Liberty - Ltd edition. Asked perfect strangers. I knew the gas mileage was poor, but didn't know how poor. I drive 200 miles a day, so it mounts up. The interior is wearing quite well, dash is conveniently laid out. I have the moon roof and enjoy that.

Excellent first year production vehicle. Very German in feeling, esp steering. Quick response times both turning and accelerating. Has more power accelerating than braking, but brakes are very good when used hard- if the need arises. Comfortable interior. Great for long trips and fine around windy local New England roads as well. Requires some effort to jump up and into seat, esp with a skirt on- optional running boards would probably help solve that.

I love it. It is fun to drive and cute, and has had no mechanical problems, aside from a slight stumble at times. But it will climb and get in and out of anyplace, and looks good doing it. Air and heat work so quickly no matter what the weather. Bad points are: Getting in and out the back doors is a challenge. I would not like to have to use the back seat every day. Gas mileage is not good for in town driving. Add slides in visors/block sun further back like older Grd. Cherokee had. Miss feature of windows able to raise/lower for a few seconds after key is off. Very noisy with windows down. Sounds like a helicopter is hovering over you even at slow speeds.

I test drove most if not all SUV’s under the $30,000.00 range and found the Jeep Liberty to be the best. I purchased a 2003 Liberty Sport in November of 2002 and had my wife pick up it up while I was out of town on a hunting trip. I called her from my tree stand and asked her how she liked her new SUV she exclaimed, “I love it, and you should buy yourself one”. Well in January of 2003 I did just that. Given my purchases, all of my winter concerns disappeared. I will be keeping both our Jeeps for quite some time. Remember, a Jeep by name is still a JEEP, any other SUV by name is just an SUV. I have owned the car for a year now and it has been thru several major snowstorms (two of which I took off for a 400 mile trip in!) Ride and build quality are excellent. I have only had one complaint and that was a squeak that was fixed by tightenting a minor bolt connecting a hose to the firewall. No other problems. Dealer has been great to work with. Mileage is 17-21 with a lot of highway driving. Car does seem susceptible to dropping mileage when temperatures are low. May be due to oxygenated gas they use in this area in winter. I really like this car.

The strong points are: lots of power, comfortable and stable ride, great looks, and obviously a great offroader. The weak points are: a gas guzzler, regardless of the fact that it is a 4wd, noisy, a poor sound system, low quality plastic & trim, and weak headlights (yes I adjusted them). For the money, it's probably still a bargain. But if you consider the money you could save on gas, especially if you're going to commute, maybe there are other vehicles out there that are a better buy.

We chose the Red Sport with the charcoal gray exterior because of the more rugged look, even though we would have liked to have some of the options only available on the limited. We have driven it on the dusty back roads of the Big Bend National Park Texas with no dust getting inside and on the Interstate at well above legal speed and it took it all with ease. The v6 power with automatic and 4 wd is great, even in all the heavy snow of NJ last winter. The heater & AC work well to make it comfortable quickly. The service departments in Texas and NJ have been well above average in most everything. It gets alot of notice and is fun to drive!

I've owned my Liberty for two years already. I find that it is a reliable and fun car. I mainly use it for school, with weekend excursions up the mountain to ski or hike. It's a great car, overall. ALthough, refueling can be a pain since it burns gas like no others (then again, aren't all SUV's).

Fuel consumption has been a major disappointment but this car is a lot of car for the money compared to other SUV's. Air conditioning system works great and not noisy at all (well maybe at full blast...). Handles beautifully on and off the road, very peppy and responsive. Instrument panel is easy to read both at night and during the day. Don't buy an SUV until you have test driven a Liberty. The only "flaw" is that the front windshield is dangerously close to the passengers, you almost feel you are going to fall off the vehicle, it takes a few days of adjusting, otherwise a nice car.

If you want to improve your milage, use Mobile 1 or a similar synthetic oil. It improve mine by almost 3 GPM on the road. I added a chrome grill and it really makes the front end look a lot better.

I can't say enough about my Jeep Liberty. I've had it since 11-01-01 and it hasn't disappointed me once. The price tag on these jeeps should be about 5K higher. No joke. The ride quality is superb. There is alittle wind noise at speeds of access of 70mph butif you have the radio on you at all you won't even realize the minor wind noise. As far as power is concerned when is there ever enough? The 210 horse power v6 is plenty enough to do all an SUV is ment for. I've personally went through some deep mud pits in my Liberty and never once have I got stuck, I have a 4x4 of course.

I live in CNY and went through a rough winter of almost 200 inches of snow and ice. 4000 lbs and sure grip on the road, being able to switch from 2WD to part time and full time 4WD is absolutely wonderful. That Jeep took the heavy snow on the roads wonderfully. It is great on the highway. Very comfortable. I love to run errands with my Jeep. The size is wonderful! The Jeep is tall enough to not feel intimdiated by the big trucks out there. The Jeep is 110 percent wonderful. The summer was great with it too! Going from the 2000 Cherokee Sport to Liberty I got what I expected - quality off road performance, poor gas mileage, decent cargo space and moderate comfort. The differences between the models are huge. But for the price, I wish I could get a rattle free ride with all my bolts tightened. Plastic facia covering bottom of glove box has almost fallen off and above drivers head a loss bolt rolls around. Cruise control didn't work from the get go but Jeep fixed it with no problem. I have adapted to window control location. Friends have competing vehicles. They are fine for town but I wouldn't rely on them for moderate or greater off roading.

My then finace (now husband) suggested we test drive a Jeep Liberty. I had been shopping around for a Ford Escape for the past 2 weeks. We traded in our Pathfinder that day! Believe it or not, we get between 20-21 MPG on the highway. Cruise control contributes to this. City, well, anywhere between 10 and 15MPG. Even though this vehicle has less cargo volume than the 95 Pathfinder, because it's taller, we have been able to haul more than we ever could with the 95 Pathfinder. And 4WD has come in handy this season as we've been getting hit with snow storms here.

I was recently forced off the road by another driver running a stop sign, and went head on into a tree at 25-30 mph. The hardest point of impact was directly in front of the drivers side. My airbag never deployed. The impact was hard enough to crack the engine block, but according to the mechanic at the dealership not hard or fast enough to cause the G-switch to deploy the airbag. I sutained multiple head contusions, a broken left tibia, and severe soft tissue injuries to my right leg.

It is a great looking vehicle for the money. But I have owned for 2 weeks and the dealer has had it for 11 days of those 2 weeks. Bad vibarations and air bag straps had to be replaced. They have changed the tires twice and are now working on replacing drive shaft to rectify vibration. I am now seriously questioning the quality, maybe I should have continued to shop around? It only has 400 miles on it and the dealer has put 300 of those on it trying to fix the problems. It is a thirsty little bugger but it is packed with a lot of options for the dollar. I would recommend if they can solve the quality issues. It built like my 97 wrangler that is for sure!

my jeep liberty has been a pretty good vehicle. the biggest concern i have had with the suv is that the front brakes make a squeaking and a metal grinding sound. i took it to the dealership & they told me that it was normal for a new car??

Please research! Dangerous vehicle.

This vehicle hydroplanes in the rain. This vehicle is too light. Doors jam. CD oplayer works at random. Hazard lights work at random. Very poor gas mileage. Too small for a man to drive. Trunk has to be pulled twice to open. While my vehicle was built prior to change of specs in March of 2002, I don't feel the vehicle is safe and am doing my best to get out of it. Unfortunately Chrysler's Customer Care Department couldn't care less if I die in a rain storm.

I've had my liberty for 5 months now and drove it some 4000 miles, mostly on rough roads or no road at all. You have to love the performance this little engine (2.4L) gives, shure it could use some mor HP's but the mileage is quite decent, the comfort is amazing. Some minor glith at 2000 miles with a speed sensor, but the dealer replaced quicly.

We needed to replace a Jeep Grand Cherokee that got totaled in an accident. The Liberty was bought for myself and my 6 year old boy. It's great for us. I just wish there was lighting for the back seat, and the floor mats are a joke, I replaced them with slush mats. Most of all we like the fact that our 6'3" Dad and the two older sisters can come with us too, sometimes.

I previously owned a CJ7 and it was probably the most unreliable vehicle I've ever come in contact with. That was then, this is now, and what a difference! I looked at the Toyota RAV4 but it is underpowered. Daimler/Chrysler has really taken Jeep quality to the next level. I'd highly recommend this vehicle for anyone thinking of a small to mid-size SUV. It truely is the only one in its class that you can take off road!

We bought a new Jeep 2002 Liberty Renegade and fell in love with it. For two months we were in SUV bliss. Then when we accidentally hit a curb the airbag went off and caused us to crash into a concrete column. The Jeep was totalled. This has been a really rough time for us. We have owned 3 Cherokees and this was our first and last Liberty. The airbag system needs a design overhaul - or - our Liberty was a lemon, I am not going to buy another one to find out. I guess this is what you get when you buy a 1.0 version of a new year run. The car only had 2000 miles on it.

I had a 97 wrangler that had to be traded in for a more family friendly car. When I saw the new Liberty I really wanted to trade my piece of crap Mazda 626 (even with the negative equity)in for it. Much to my suprise my wife liked the look of it. We decided to take one for a test drive and 2 weeks later bought the Liberty. The ride is very smooth compared to the Wrangler I had as well as the 4-runner my wife drove. Handling is quite impressive. The gas mileage stinks, but the 4-Runner was just as bad.

I like Liberty, but I had a lot problems with it in the beginning. Recalls were becoming common. I am concerned about some of the electrical features. My in-dash CD player malfunctions frequently. To be fair, most of the problems I had were escalated by the service I received, not the vehicle. The Liberty has great visibility & handles well. It has just enough power. Controls & functions are easily accessible. But, the gas - WHEW - you have to have a second job just to keep the tank filled. In addition, the miles add up extremely quick - there is no way I have driven as far as the car indicates.

This is a good looking car with power for an suv, it has a smooth car like ride and can maneuver in an out on any terrain. I have had many vehicals and must say that this feels at home on a night out on the town, and river running. So if you are tired of sitting behind your desk go for a spin, a boardway show or the snake river you will be right at home. We Love it. I have had all types of vehicals from Mercedes to vetts and the like, drive this one and I believe that you will agree it is a wonderful performer.

My jeep has had nothing but problems. It has been in the shop more then on the road. I bought the car because I liked the looks of the car. I never thought my new car would have so many problems such as electrical problems, radio problems, coolant and so on……. The car needs a bigger gas tank. The gas mileage is very low so you are filling up all time. Why not put a bigger gas tank in it? However, after all my complaints about the car my mother has a Jeep Sport and her car is fine. She has had no problems what so ever. I got a LEMON!!!

I LOVE my Jeep Liberty! The Liberty has all the room, performance and style I was looking for, without having to go much over $20,000. The gas mileage could be better, but it has a solid ride with excellent acceleration and a look that turns heads! The interior is spacious with a more refined look than that of some of its similarly priced competitors. A smartly designed tailgate allows me to pop open the rear window with one finger.

The safety features are great. I could not lock my key inside d/t the anti- lock system. It alerts me when passenger fail to fully close their doors. I really like the exterior appearance but had to get use to the spare tire on back. I feel that there should be other color options for the spare tire covers and maybe some without the white JEEP emblem on them. It is always thirsty for fuel. Overall it has been a great experience owning it.

As far as SUV is concerned, the new Jeep Liberty has one of the best rides available today. The ride is supple and soft and it shruggs off road bumps with ease. The over all build quality is impressive. Quite unusaul when we are talking about an American made SUV. Attention to details are nice and over all interior design and exterior design are first rate. We'll see how it will hold up in the long term. The engine is powerful and it has a nice growl to it.

I've had my Liberty for nearly a year now and currently turned 17,000 plus miles. During that time I've been able to put it through some extremes to include towing in 100+ temps, extended road trips and winter driving hell: - 20 degrees at over 10,000' elevation. The Liberty performed flawlessly in all respects. For such a capable vehicle the sacrifice for good gas mileage is worth it. The build quality is A++, the engine extremely powerful, sound system rocks - I give the Liberty two thumbs up

I traded my '00 Cherokee Sport in for a '02 Liberty Limited Edition. It is much more comfortable all around and the rear seat 60/40 fold down function is great. There is less room behind the back seat, but the spare tire on the tailgate frees up some of the lost space. The Liberty is a little bit slower off the line that the Cherokee, but the engine is smooth and adequately powerful, not to mention much quieter. The on-road ride of the Liberty is great and the interior fit- and-finish is better than anything in its class. The range of the Liberty is less than the Cherokee as the tank is smaller (18.5 gal vs 20 gal) and the mileage seems a bit poorer.

We traded our 2001 Toyota RAV4 for a 2002 Liberty Limited 4wd and couldn't be more pleased with doing so. The RAV was a quality vehicle, but too much like a car. The Liberty is very truck- like (it rides a bit firm) & solid and has a nice torquey motor. Besides feeling so solid, it's also fun to drive. The pricing is very reasonable, the quality is very good overall, the styling is awesome, the towing capacity is class-leading, and it's off-road capabilities are hard to beat. This is your do-all small SUV that gives the most bang for your buck. We're glad we snagged one.

My Liberty is the first Jeep that I've owned and it has far exceeded my expectataion on quality and driveability. My only foray into the world off roading has been on some logging roads in Colorado, but the Liberty handled it with ease and provided me the confidence that I could get out of anything I happened into. I love sitting up high, above the traffic. I have owned a Rodeo and a KIA Sportage. The Jeep is superior in fit and finish to both and looks a damn sight better to boot. My only complaint has been the gas mileage. Hiway mileage has been in the 18-20 range,(at 70-75mph), but around town I get 13-15. Dismal...

I took it off road once for some very casual riding and could tell I was not stretching its legs at all. I am confident that this will be a great all terain vehicle when needed. The only drawback against this vehicle could be gas mileage, but on my highway driving I have been getting almost 25 mpg. That beats the sticker disclosure by 5 mpg! I have gotten a ton of comments on its sharp looks. Everyone is stopping and looking! I love it!

Drives well, it is fun, has a distinctive style and most importantly it is comfortable on longer trips too. This jeep is well made and nicely shaped. Looks sturdy and massive, yet has nimble manners. Fuel economy? Well, consider the 210 horses and the tall shape and it is still matches the fuel consumption of my V8 206 HP T-Bird. The interior room is incredible. I am 6'4" and have plenty of room all around. Comfort is good even in the back. Go and test drive all the SUVs in this class and leave the Liberty for the last, because you will and up with it... Did I mention 5 star collision ratings? Well, let see how this baby holds up on the long run....

I just about bought a Ford Escape, but then test drove the Jeep Liberty. Best move I ever made. After driving the Liberty, there was no comparison between the two. The Escape's interior and overall build quality was dismal compared to the Liberty. The build quality of the Liberty seems more akin to the likes of a Mercedes or Lexus (It's that good). Fun to drive and handles great for an SUV. Would highly recommend this vehicle to anyone considering a small SUV.

Jeep Liberty is FUN to drive, especially in adverse conditions, ie. heavy snowfall, and offroad. It is a pleasure to drive onroad, especially with the kids in the backseat. Great view of the road, a breeze to steer and tight turning radius. Breaks are magnificent, I had to lay on them once, and they came through when I thought I was going to end up in the trunk of the car in front of me who stopped past their turn. VERY IMPRESSIVE!

You have to find an oportunity to go off road with this Jeep. It is a little mountain goat, for sure. Loves to go fast on the freeway and gets much better gas mileage at high speeds. Can pull anything with ease, but gulps gas when it does. I am looking for ways to increase the gas mileage now. Leave it dirty, because will all the fancy body cladding, it is hard to wash.

Great car for work or play. Gas mileage for work is only 15 but hwy is 20. I have had the vehicle 3 mths and love it. It has the classic jeep feel with all the upgrades! Love the design of the vehicle. It looks very sporty but also very classy! Would recommend to everyone!

Former Grand Cherokee Limited Leasee and present Pathfinder Leasee. Wanted a 2nd SUV but not as big as Pathfinder. Haven't purchased since 1984, but the low interest rates were hard to turn down. Love the look and feel of our Silver Liberty.

I bought this car on a whim after walking way from a Subaru Forrester that I was going to buy (thought it was too "light" and a bit too much of a "girly" car). Drove the liberty in a dealer parking lot and loved it. I bought it to replace my ageing Pathfinder as my 4WD winter car for the frigid north east. I am delighted with thecar. Great loos, solid, everything works well. Super sound system. Heavy "trucky" feel that I like. Good build quality. I have rarely had American built cars but this is as nice as my German cars for a lot less.

So far sooo good!

I traded in my Grand Cherokee for the Jeep Liberty and absolutely love the difference. I find the Liberty much more fun to drive and appreciate the increased traction of the 4X4. The Liberty is zippy and has appropriate towing capabilities. I love the Liberty!

As soon as I drove it off the lot, a sensor light came on. I turned around and brought it back. The dealer fixed it without any problems. A few hours later, the same problem happend. The sensor light came on. I took it in and the dealer fixed it. The next day I started to have suspension problems. I took it back to the dealership and they fixed it. Three hours later. By the end of the following week, it would not start. I had it towed to the dealership and they said it was the spark plugs. Ten days, 342 miles and 4 trips back to the dealer, I drove across the street to the Ford dealership and traded my Liberty for an Escape.

I ROLLED!!! Be careful.

Am very sad - loved my Liberty, but at 3800 miles was hit by an Explorer in the rear quarter panel and I flipped on my side!! We were both going only maybe 25 mph - I was swerving to avoid, but don't think it should have flipped. Only had it 3 months - Jeep was totalled, now am debating buying another for safety reasons. Gas mileage sucked, which I did expect (but didn't have to like!). I know I can drive it w/out rolling it - the other drivers are the problem for me.

this is my third jeep, having had a 2000 Cherokee and my wife drives a 2000 Grand and I like this one better than both of those. That is saying alot since both of my other Jeeps have been excellent. My Cherokee was trouble free for 30k miles before I bought my Liberty. I drive many miles on business and love the feel of this vehicle on and off road. I would recommend this vehicle to anyone looking for an SUV

I have had my Liberty since Oct. and currently have 18k miles on it. Finally took it off-road about a month ago, and boy are the reviews correct. This vehicle handled suprisingly well and with it's footprint, you can basically hit any trail you desire. I use to own a 1986 CJ-7 (wish I still had it), and as of today I am 90% confident that my Liberty can go wherever I use to take my CJ. I still need to upgrade to larger tires and most likely will install the Rusty's Off-Road 2.5" lift when new tires are needed. If you are in the market for a cute-ute, look elsewhere, but if you want an Off-road capable vehicle, go with the LIberty - you will not be disappointed.

I really like my Jeep Liberty its my first SUV and first jeep and it rides very smoothly and handles well. My previous car was a honda del sol and I was nervous about the size and parking with the liberty but come to find out its shorter in length then my wife's toyota camry and it rides better to me then her camry but definitely better than my del sol.

I like it more than my Cherokee.

I changed from a Cherokee Limited to the Liberty Limited and I am amazed at the change and the increase in drinving pleasure as well as comfort. The quality of the Liberty definitely has a German flair in the craftmanship not equaled in the previous models. It is certainly a bonus. The handling and road holding ability of the Liberty outperforms that of my old (1999) Cherokee. I am very happy with that SUV.

I had wanted a liberty since last May. I bought one in October and it was great for about two months then my troubles began. I've had to go to the dealership to have my front suspension replaced, but it seems that my rear suspension is bad too. My heating system has a tendency to smell like a skunk, and my brakes don't work well any more and I don't even have 6000 miles .Overall ride quality has just gotten worse. I was going to buy an Escape, but decided on the Liberty,I may have made a mistake.

I love the design of the Liberty...it's great to park and drive around town. I find that it's a bumpy ride and the driver's seat cuts off my leg circulation! The gas mileage is terrible and I find it very disappointing! Wish I had my 4Runner back! It's also very noisy when driving on the interstate....noise around the windshield and wiperblades bounce. The transmission is real jerky...when you put it into drive. Also not enough cargo space...when I put my stroller in nothing else can go!

This my third jeep that I've owned in the last 8 years. The first was 1994 Cherokee Sport that I traded on the Liberty and the other is my wife's 2001 Grand Cherokee Limited V8. I'm quit please with the build quality. My other car is a Lexus GS300 and dollar for dollar, the Liberty is pretty well put together. Everything works and fits properly. My wife likes driving the Liberty over the old Cherokee, but still prefers her V8 Grand Cherokee. She's only 5ft 3in tall and finds it easier to get in the Cherokee and likes the V* power. By the way, mine is Black with the Taupe interior (one tone).

I hate the maintenance, but that would be with any black vehicle. It is my own fault! I have had a few problems with the recalls but i am aware of the fact that it is a new line of a vehicle.

I won't let my wife drive this vehicle. I'm afraid she won't want to drive her car anymore, it's that good. This is the best small/mid-size SUV out there. The CRV, Rav-4, Escape are merely glorified station wagons compared to this vehicle. If you prefer the former to the latter, stay away from this Jeep. If you want the real deal in an SUV, GET YOUR OWN!!!!!! Fully equipped with leather, ABS, sunroof, and the slickest interior around, it cost only $25738, which is more affordable than my wife. I may get rid of her, but I think I'll keep the Lib!

It was time to by a new car for my wife. We looked at the new liberty. Bought one that same day. The V-6 blew me away. The ride is great. A big selling piont with me was the 5000 pound tow capacity. After 15,000 miles my wife loves it. I have only a few complants with the car. They include: not alot of foot room in the front. My legs feel cramped on long drives. Not alot room to move them around. The seat in relationship with the door armrest is in a odd spot. Overall, I like this car and would drive it every day. That is if I could ever get the key away from my wife.

I just recently purchased my Jeep Liberty and I look forward everyday to driving it. It is as much fun on road as it is off. I recommend buying only 4x4 though. Why buy a 4x2 Jeep? That's like a three legged horse. Anyways, the 4cyl has plenty of power at 150hp. The only trick is to shift at 3000rpm or higher. Overall, I am ecstatic about owning my Jeep Liberty. Much better than my old truck. I almost forgot. The stereo system was suprisingly great. I don't need to add anything except a CD changer.

Great looks, comfort, fun to drive. I test drove several mini-SUV's and this was the best one on the market, with the exception of gas mileage. The Liberty handles well and glides down the rode. The interior styling is innovative and unique with the two tone color, white instrument panel and chrome accents. Adequate storage with the exception of sun glass holder. The overhead console is nice, but outside temperature reading is 5 degrees high all the time. On my old Grand Cherokee it was always accurate.

My second new Jeep, I've been a little peeved about the little quirks. The air/heat fan is too noisy and there are rattles in the dash. I love the performance of the vehicle, and the gas mileage hasn't been horrible. It's very comfortable for me and three friends to ride around. If it weren't for the noises, I would say this is by far the best value for the money. Now, I'm not so sure.

At 3,900 miles the transmission failed due to rusted-out connctions, transmission fluid leaked, and acceleration was horrible. Next... at 8,000 miles, the transmission failed again...same problem, same symptoms, same solution...spent four days at the shop. Next - 13,000 miles and the same problem, plus it wouldn't accelerate over 60 MPH without high engine revs and a burning smell. The car also lurched forward violently whenever shifted into drive. It also buzzed and moved forward slowly when put into neutral! When shifted, the transmission sounded like stones in a blender. My Liberty looks great, but is plagued with problems.

Great Car! After looking and looking we checked out the Liberty and were impressed. Great styling inside and out and functional too. We tried it out 2 days ago (3/18/2002) in one of our annual Northeast Ohio Spring snowstorms and were even more impressed. About 5 inches of snow over ice and the Liberty actually put you back in your seat a bit with some moderate accelleration.. Our 1st 4WD but it really impressed me!!! Same outing, nailing the ABS brakes and we stopped straight and true. Bottom line We love it!!! (Gas mileage seems to be of concern to some other reviewers however Im not to worried... If I wanted good gas mileage I would not have been looking at a SUV)

I have been driving my Jeep Liberty LE since June of last year. And i have loved it ever since. I have had no problems with it whatsoever. I was in an accident once; i was on a 'go stright or turn right' lane and there was this other car on the 'turn right only lane'... this guy went straight through as I turned right.. then there was a collision. I got out of my jeep and looked at his car, there wre HUGE dentations that ran accross his car (I believe it was a Honda). Then I looked at my jeep. At first glance, it seemed that there was NO damage at all. But on a closer look, there were a few measly scratches that none of my family could even notice. Now thats what i call strong.

For Liberty,Justice & for All (well,at least most!)I get compliments almost everyday!Still room for improvement,on MPG,but this SUV has good Pick-Up&Go! It puts me higher than most SUV's incl. Cherokee,(which I also own)&has some nice standard features.Getting use to the window controls in the middle console,is the hardest feature to overcome, but makes it great for driver/front psngr. As a former Rav4 owner, Liberty gives you much more interior & leg room,it also has more Grip to the Road.I always think there is room for improvement in Any new vehicle, but am extemly happy with the performance this vehicle has shown mus thus far. I give it a "10" for the fun it brings driving!

Back in 1996 we had a new Grand Cherokee Limited. Had it for about three years. Traded it in for a truck until when the Liberty's came out, we decided to order one. Man! did we ever miss the JEEP quality that goes into these vehicles. Since then, got rid of the truck and are extremely excited to go to our first Camp JEEP this year with our Liberty. Many people ask how we like the Liberty. The answer to that is, I just can't stop talking about it. We had purchased the 4WD Limited in Woodland Brown. We just love it.

I test drove the Liberty just for comparison and once I got in it and drove it down the street I fell in love with it! It handles like a luxury car. The fuel economy is not as bad as most SUVs. I get about 24 highway, 19 city. The only thing I don't like about it is trying to change the oil because the oil filter is behind my skid plates and it is tough to get to. My Liberty is completely loaded...not an option missing...I could not have done that in any other vehicle I was looking at for the price I paid. Not to mention this was the most solid and safe-feeling vehicle I have driven.

Around town, the Liberty rides quiet and smooth. It has good brakes and heats up quickly. Pickup is okay. On the downside, this vehicle is very thirsty. I haven't been able to get better than 16mpg. With that kind of poor mileage, I should be driving a V8. The leather seats are of lesse quality, and they don't support my legs at all (I'm 6'2"). Driving my Liberty at highway speeds does not inspire much confidence. Also, the interior glass fogs too easily.

After 6 weeks, I've finally crossed over the 1K mark on the odometer. This vehicle is very impressive. I've driven a number of SUVs (Blazer/Jimmy, Cherokee, CRV, etc.) and this one rides more like a mini-van than a truck. It handles very well, has a very tight turning radius, and looks good. I had a kid at the Wendy's drive-thru look at it and say "Mr....that is one neat looking truck". My only complaint is of course the MPG, but it is to be expected.

My husband and I wanted a new SUV, we wanted the 4x4. we searched and found that the Nissan wanted to charge more for the 210hp calling it super charged while the Liberty comes ready with 210hp. The Ford kinda lagged at the start while the Liberty didn't. After we drove the Liberty we were hooked. Nothing compared after that. Best buy we ever made.

This Jeep has a great interior, and I find the seats very comfortable. Lots of interior room, good power, great stereo. Haven't heard any squeaks or rattles, and haven't had one problem in 4 months. It looks great, it drives great in snow, and it makes me smile each time I get in.

Interior is built from surprisingly cheap plastics, ergonomics are almost adequate, 4X4 system is “cloned” from previous Jeep models-it’s not doing good job in the snow since system can get easily confused by its anticipated traction, rear viper can be much better, engine is surprisingly good and very much agile, etc. In conclusion, do not take this vehicle serious as far as off road driving-do not believe to advertisements.

Driven 52K since purchase and haven't had any problems. Still no tune up, same tires, and no real squeaks or noises. Surprisingly sturdy vehicle, will likely get another.

I loved my '98 Wrangler, for a month. I've had my Liberty for 6 mo. and this is love that'll last. Fast, smooth, powerful, EVERYTHING WORKS, great offroad, and priced less than Wrangler! I added skid plates underneath, have taken it to highest points of Montana, on Granite boulder fields. Mileage is exactly what the window sticker said. That's OK. A solid, responsive, sporty vehicle with lots to offer the couple or family. THANKS for getting everything right!

In my experience of 2 days with this vehicle..I love it..and can't wait to go to a Jamboree this summer and get it dirty. The ride is a lot better than I ever expected a Jeep to have. The interior is very comfortable and roomy. Has plenty of passing power and is actually very quiet at speed on the highway.

WE bought a Liberty after reading many rave reviews. 4 Months later, we traded it on a Grand Cherokee. The reason for the trade was the Liberty had been into the dealer repair shop 8 time for various things. The rear end suspension had to be replaced and then the controller arm, and so on and so on. It never cost us a dime, but the hassel of having to take it in was enough!! Wouldn't recommend it to my least favorite person!! Save your money.

Fun to drive, love the style. BUT problems with auto trans that dealer can't seem to fix. When below 32 degrees, trans locks in 2nd gear and check engine light comes on. Had it to dealer 3 times so far, and it just happened again today. Also two symetrical dents on either side of hood cracking the paint. To be fixed under warranty. Starting to think I got a lemon, although I do love the vehicle. very concerned. Gas mileage disapointing.

I have only had this =SUV for 2 days but I am already in love. I have never had an SUV but I was never very impressed. To be honest, I purchased this vehicle strictly on the great styling inside and out. Ours is a 4x4 Limited and I love the ride, the handling and the looks. This is the most fun vehicle I have ever had.

First it was a 84 Cherokee, then a 94 Wrangler and now my 02 Liberty Sport. So far I love the Lib. I test drove all the other sport utes on the market, and the Lib stood out, not only because of its styling, but because of having a low range 4WD. My only complaint are the seats. Not as a comfortable as comparable seats but it is what I've come to expect from Jeep. If you need a grocery hauler, but an Escape, if you want something to take offroad, you need a Liberty!
