The one thing all buyers should be aware of and this goes for many cars from 1995 to 2008 is that many, even Acura used timing belts. Many of these cars engines are Interference engines which means extremely close tolerances. So, if the timing belt breaks (It will give no warning) , most likely it will destroy your engine. If the engine is non-interference (many 1995 to 2000 were) it means your walking and need to get your car towed, and looking at a $700 repair to reinstall the belt. So, if you are intent to buy one and don't know if that belt was replace, then you must replace it soon or gamble on losing your engine. The 2002 V-6 Sonata I bought looked almost brand new in and out , underneath and even the engine bay. (I know dealers clean them, but the car was well pampered.) I paid a bit more but this car was outstanding. Not one ding on the car, no accidents , EC interior, and only one very small minor scratch (about an inch ) on the bumper. Pearl White. I did own a 2002 4 cyl long ago and I never had a problem with it. I also own a 2013 Elantra Limited and like that as well. I know it's early in the process but I put about 550 miles on it so far, and no complaints and very happy. There is a lot of junk out there in that price range. I had Toyota's and they are wonderful reliable cars and would have bought another had the price been right. Anyway, In its present condition it hard to think there will be problems popping up soon, but then again, its relatively new and it is a 14 year old car, but I can tell somethings were replace like the A/C , and front brakes etc. I wrench on cars so I can do somethings when they do come up. I would say the idle is not the smoothest but once in drive it is pretty quiet and a very comfortable soft ride. Quiet in park as well. Tires look almost new, and exhaust doesn't seem that old, so it's relatively quiet, accept upon acceleration. It emits a growl, which sounds kinda like dual exhaust so its not too troubling. No it's not as quiet as my new car on acceleration but hey, it is 14 years old. Power is decent at 170 HP. Handling is good, and visibility is real good. Brakes are firm. Everything works well, including Power sunroof. Dash looks brand new , and its beige in color. I can tell this car spent a lot of time in the garage and not in the sun. Paint shines! I saw many articles on the rear brakes and how they made lock up. Yes, I think the design was bad. I did take the rear wheels off, and I believe the problem is the metal slide clips they use are a bad design. I sanded down those slides, and also the edge of the pads, and used high temp grease to ensure movement. I just want to avoid possible problems since it seems this was a concern. It's not hard to do this.

This car was honestly the worst thing I could have purchased. I spent a lot of money just to buy it and then ended up having to spend thousands of dollars to fix it the next week after purchase. Although gas mileage was great I would rather have something that would burn through gas then this. It was not reliable and had a mind of its own.

I bought my 2002 Hyundai Sonata new, driving 100 miles from my home to the dealer who had the color and options I wanted. Overall, this car has been excellent. It now has 190,000 miles on it and I can honestly say the problems that I have had have been minimal. Those issues include a bad oxygen sensor, a power steering leak and the starter replaced, all of these things after 120,000 miles. I will admit that I have not been as maintenance conscious as I should have been, but despite that, she continues to run like a champ.

We bought this car second hand from an owner who did maintain the car and brought it in for all recalls. We have owned it for 4yrs and have only put on 20,000km's. Within the first year of having it, wheel bearings needed to be changed. Then it started to spudder, shorted out and died in the driveway. Turns out there is a problem with the battery connectors and one had almost completely rotted off. I have heard of this issue with these cars. During this escapade it blew the main fuse of the car which was hard to find. Now the transmission is finished, the catalytic converter(S) need to be changed, yes there are 3 on this car and it will cost you 2000+ to change them, there is electrical

I bought one for $10,000 w/29k miles. I wrecked it at 142k miles. At 40mph, I T-boned an SUV, and it still started, but Esurance totaled it. :( The water pump died at around 80k, covered. Between 100k & 142k, I replaced the front wheel bearings in 2011 (I drove offroad a few times), battery, alternator, rear brake calipers. That's it, nothing else major went wrong. Minor things the past year or two, tape deck died, radio display flickers (I have Sirius, so that doesn't matter), antenna only goes half-way up.

This wasn't my car, it was my mom's and I hated driving it. Parts would wear out constantly. At about 80k miles driving to work, the timing belt snapped and destroyed some critical engine parts. The engine had to be torn apart and rebuilt, along with a new water pump costing almost $1200. Later on that year, the water pump had to be replaced again, the CV joints had to be replaced, new alternator, and new spark plugs all before 90K miles. Once it passes 100K miles, we got all sorts of weird noises such as a shrieking engine that is the worst when driving in the rain. The ride was very uncomfortable with almost no padding in the seats.

I have had a 4 cylinder 2002 Sonata since new in 2002. It is as good looking a car as is any on the road, it has been absolutely reliable. I have had no costs associated with repairs to the car. I am 70 years of age, and hope to drive this car for another ten years. It has just over 60,000k.

Like most cars, the 2002 Sonata has its recalls and defects, at first this car was rated very high in customer satisfaction and industry standards, for the most part this still holds true despite recall defects... what i find interesting about the bad features of this vehicle is not that it's a bad car but that simply stated, The only thing bad about this car is mainly small recall issues in its performace design. what i really like about the company is thats they are quick to investigate any problems with this car to fix any malfunctions free of cost...5 stars here..thats called trust!

Well, I've been starting to have power steering fluid leaking all over the place. Took a look up under the car and the high pressure power steering hose is spitting out a lot of fluid. Judging from these reviews this is a very common problem with sonatas. Usually seems to happen around 100K (my 2002 has 105K on it). Definitely a design flaw, but don't know if it meets criteria for a class action. Would do this myself to save some $ but can't really save that much as this is a dealer part that's about $300. I'll let the techs install as I'm sure they've done plenty and the labor (although it's not a 2 second job) is not the brunt of the cost.

My Sonata now has 130,000 miles on it and repairs are starting to add up. I bought it brand new and have to say up until now, it has been a good purchase. My O2 sensor went out a few times, but was covered by the warranty. The power antennae broke but covered by warranty. The interior door handles also started to peel, but was covered by a recall. At about 75,000 the paint started to bubble on the roof of the car, and at 120,000, the power steering line started to leak, which cost around $300 to fix. The speedometer and cruise control just went out at 130,000, so who knows how much that will be. The car does ride nice and handles beautiful though, maintenance is expensive but would buy again.

Good commuter car, not so great mpg but manageable. Some issues were fixed under warranty; water pump, front window motor replaced and complete instrument panel replaced because of a broken fuel gauge, so reflected mileage is actually less than actual. The cons: front right brakes were replaces but always squeaks, timing belt jumped and damaged the timing sensor before 60k miles and transmission speed sensor went out at 64k mi which cost me $950 and $350 respectively. Dealer said it was not covered under drivetrain warranty, would have wanted to keep this car but problems are starting to pop out.

I purchased my car brand new back in 2002. It now has 123,000 miles on it and I'm now just experiencing a few problems. The power steering line is leaking power steering fluid. From other reviews, it seems like this is a common problem and should possibly be a recall because of a poor design flaw. The paint is also peeling on my roof. A few other minor complaints were the antennae broke, but it was still under warranty, the O2 sensor went out a few times and chrome inside door handles peeled, all covered by a recall. Also, the maintenance is a bit pricey. Now for the good. It handles great and has such a smooth ride. No major problems the first 7 years of ownership. I'll buy a Hyundai again.

I now have 94K miles and the car has provided 100% reliable transportation. Most reliable car I've ever owned. BUT - the electric antenna never worked right from day one, the clock goes on and off and I can't turn the radio off. It keeps coming on at random times. Love the car, it drives wonderfully, very comfortable, no repairs except oil and tires. Good mileage. Still looks shiny and new. The Rick Case purchasing experience was horrible (very manipulative) and their service dept isn't any better. They charged me $460 to do back breaks but only did one and charged me for both. Found a work light hanging from my car when I got home! I'll buy another Sonata soon but not from them.

Sonata was my first car. I have driven many cars as rentals or those that belong to friends, including Ford mustang, oldsmobile alero, chrysler sebring, dodge neon, ford taurus and toyota avalon. I think Sonata beats all these other cars hands down. The audio for a 2002 model is quite good, the looks (i think!) are extraordinary, the drive is smooth as butter. After more than 100,000 miles of driving I can say that its been quite reliable. I haven't used the 100,000 mile road-side assistance at all except once when my old batteries ran out while it was sitting in my driveway. Its time to buy my second car and Sonata 2010 is one of my first choices for the test-drive. Great job,Hyunda!

This is the first Hyundai I have owned. It is an '02 w/87,000 miles. It needs a entire new transmission, which the dealer said would cost $2800. I have owned Ford, Chrysler and Jeep vehicle and never had a problem of this magnitude. The ford even has 223,00o miles. When I took it to the dealer the first time the check engine light came on AutoZOne told me it was a Shift Control Solenoid code.

I have been driving the car for 7 years and have almost 70K. So far no major problems, brakes and tires, kept up with the Maintenance schedule. Little things like the clock has been replaced and still does not work right, drivers side wiper keeps coming loose and have to carry wrench to tighten. Had to replace the antenna would not work in freezing temps. The car has lots of power and can keep with the best of them. I average about 20 around town and to be honest never checked it on a trip. I would buy another hyundai without any hesitation, but now looking at at Acura, want to upgrade a little. Seats and interior all has held up well

I bought this car from a dealer when the Odometer reading was about 72K. Since then I have driven less than 3K. Like the car's style and pickup on the signals. It leaves almost every car in the rear view! I have tried that with cars like Lexus, BMW, Toyota and Honda and my Sonata picks up faster than all of them! The maintenance is costly for this car and I have changed the Alternator (about $500), Power Steering Pressure Hose (about $450) and general maintenance. The car's engine gives some noise which a mechanic couldn't figure out why. I need to take that to dealership (again $$$). Also the Air bag signal has turned Red which only dealer can see ($$$). So expensive drive for 3K travel.

I bought this car off the showroom floor and it has been the most reliable car that I have owned. I have owned a Chevrolet, an Oldsmobile, a Ford, and a Mitsubushi. The only I have done on my Sonata is oil changes, a new set of brakes and two sets of tires. I have 125,000 miles now on my car and I plan on buying a new Sonata in the near future. The only issues I have had is a "phantom" stereo. The CD player died at 100,000 and I cannot turn the radio off. There has been little paint peeling on the roof.

We bought the car because we loved the styling and we liked the fuel economy. And while I still like both, I have been faced with costly services ever since! Most annoying is that my drivers side power window keeps malfunctioning. I soon will have replaced it twice in 1 year and 1 month! Also, I had always been pleased with the "ride" of this car locally. However, when my daughter moved to a location 7 hours away and I started driving that distance, I found it almost unbearable. I'm not alone, everyone who has ridden with me at that distance is in pain. We cannot ride without pillows to prevent numbness! And that is true for people ranging in age from 35 to 70. Cute, not great!

I now have approximately 58,000 miles on my car and the timing chain went and am now faced with rebuilding the engine, at a cost of $1,500.00, Hyundai is going to pick up the rest as a good faith gesture. I would not suggest that you keep this car past 50,000 miles. They say in the warranty 10 years or 100,000 miles. I'm not sure this car is designed to last that long. Really Bummed in Connecticut.

The 2002 Sonata was the first new car I ever bought. I've been driving it now for close to 7 years and put 137,000 miles on it. At 100,000 my brakes begin to wear out. This is the only time I've had to take it in for major work, but new brakes at 100,000 miles is normal. My Sonata drives today at 137,000 as well as it did when I drove it off the lot with 12 miles on it. I believe that in order to get any car as good as the Sonata, I will have to either get another Sonata or a BMW, Mercedes, or Audi to get the same quality that I've gotten from the 2002 Sonata. It has been nothing less than superior in all areas of performance and reliability. I Will have a very hard time replacing it.

I have owned the car for 5 years. First let me tell you for the first 60,000 miles zero problems as long as a kept up the maint. After tho power steering pressure hose burst 560.00, ignition crank sensor failed 600.00. During this time many interior and exterior pieces started coming loose and generally looking bad. struts now bad too. 75,000 miles the timing belt fails and destroys the engine to the point where it needs a rebuild. Id ditch the car after 60k, its resale value is so low its not worth the repairs. now have a year old toyota and a six thousand dollar paper weight.

I love my car. I have had things go wrong with it: replacing four window regulators, one speed input sensor, one speed output sensor, one oxygen sensor, but other than that, this car has been great in the near six years I have owned it. I love it more than the Plymouth I had before (for 14 years). It has such a comfortable interior that I can drive it for long periods of time and not get tired or sore. When I first got it in 2001, it was a big head turner and people would come up to me and go, "That's a Hyundai?!" They thought it was a Jaquar, BMW or a Mercedes. Mine is black with black/gray interior and it looks sophisticated. Still looks like new because I take good care of it.

Well, what can I tell you?.......I thought long and hard before buying my Sonata, but what a good choice it was! Only things to go wrong in three years of ownership was a sensor broke down inthe engine, (easy fix warranty), and a sidelght bulb blew, 5 minute job to put right I love driving this car, and occasionally, when I am in hurry up mode, I use the "tiptronic" gear change, I have to say that this isn't very often, as I mostly prefer to drive at a more relaxed pace and let the auto do it's stuff, which it does with super smooth aplomb! So far I have 42000 on the clock, which is low mileage for the year. Great car, highly recommend!

A little too wide for a city car, and slightly sluggish on acceleration (it is not meant to be a muscle car, though). Otherwise, a great commuter/travel/hwy car. Never had any real problems, very dependable.

I researched quite thoroughly before buying my Sonata 2002 used in July '06. Reliability and Safety scores made the difference for me. Since I've bought it I couldn't be happier. The car is beautiful; have gotten comments from friends and strangers about its looks--"looks like a Jag". Besides that I love the car; it looks great, ride is smooth and powerful, very quiet. The interior is comfortable, spacious and beautifully appointed, the stereo system sounds great. This is probably the nicest car I've owned even though it is 5 years old, and I've owned an a new Accord, a Celica and a Mazda 626. First used car I buy and best buy I ever made.

Bought this used (1 yr old) from dealer (pgm car) with 11K miles. My wife and I have put 35K on is since, and this car has not needed to see the dealer since, with the exception of 1 recall. Other than regular maintenance, this car has needed nothing, and still looks and runs like new. The car has depreciated less than $3,000 in the 3 years we've owned it, and now I'm shopping for one for my son. If you want a good, stylish, reliable and economic car, the Sonata should be your first choice.

Love the style, price, etc.But...I've had nothing but problems- only had car for 6 wks. rotors had to be replaced- warped,$400+, multiple belt problems, vibration in steering wheel, interior handles cheaply made - caused cuts on hands, brakes not covered under warranty- pulley problem was causing belts to be replaced every 2 weeks.Took back to dealership 5 times within less than 5 months for high pitched noises in front end.The pulley was chewing the belts up.Problems with engine cutting out.Carfax check prior to purchase showed car was clean.I'm reporting this under lemon law and trying to get another car, but because of amount owed will have negative equity in car. Very disappointed!

This midsize sedan is highly underrated due to the earlier history of Hyundai automobiles. I've owned 2 Chevrolets, 2 Plymouths, 1 Rambler, 1 Dodge, 1 Mustang, 2 Pontiacs, 3 Buicks, 1 VW, and 3 Oldsmobiles. My company cars have included 4 Chevrolets, 2 Fords, and an Oldsmobile. My Hyundai Sonata LX V6 is as good or better than any of the new cars mentioned above, and at a fraction of the price. Sonata has been a well kept secret, but the cat is out of the bag. Like the ad says, "Drive it and you'll buy it!"

Bought car with 57K & 16mos later have 84K. Great car. Smoother ride than our Windstar. In fact wife will take the Sonata over the Windstar often. Two dealers in my area wonderful. Even matched price of local garage to keep my business. Only major problem was a missfiring cylinder. After paying $400+ to get spark plugs, engine flush etc done, went back in a week and they had to replace the oxygen sensor. Other than that, it does pull to the left and after alignment steering wheel shakes. also, water in the taillamp...$220+ to fix/replace. Those probs aside, it really has been a great car. Would totally buy another one. 1800+ miles/month got me 25mpg. City has been 22mpg.

I have owned this vehicle for 3 years and have been very pleased with most aspects of the vehicle. I love the design the ride is noce handling is good, service has been good. Gas mileage although not what expected is not bad for a car of this size. I boughtr the car for price and warranty length and so far have been happy most of the time. Areas that have been problems, Paint is not holding up, chips easily from road dirt, seating areas are not wearing well, they show signs of use easily. Not happy at all about only being able to purchase certain parts from Hyundai such as a Battery, brake pads, air filter. Would buy another Hyundai from the exp, with this vehicle Love the car.

We bought this car for the wife to tool around in. We use it for all family outings and shopping. It is comfortable around town, quite peppy and delivers acceptable economy [around 27 mpg].The interior is beautiful and easy to keep up. The stereo system is very good. The seats are a little too firm on long rides [8 hours or more] It has been an excellent car for the 20,000 miles we've had it with no problems.

My husband and I bought our Sonata wanting to trade up from our Cavalier since we were expecting a baby. We haven't had too many problems but it seems when we do, they are VERY expensive to fix and never covered under the warranty. We've been steadily replacing rotors since we bought the things (which can only be bought at the dealership, go figure). I love the exterior!! No major failures as of yet but lots of recalls. The interior has had a lot of little probs. The arm rest on the driver's door ripped with just my husband's elbow resting on it. The silver chips off the inner door handles and leaves razor-sharp edges. WATCH OUT!! We had to sand them. Overall, it's a good car.

103,000 mi as of 6/05. Has been extremely reliable. Looks great inside and outside. Recently had failure in power steering hose. $400.00 incl. labor for a hose? Air bag warning lite on, $1600.00 for an air bag sensor? They have to rip and send out seat because sensor is under upholstery...needs to be sent out to upholsterer. Engineering is said to be brilliant; I have a hunch from now on is where the money will really go out because of the "brilliant" engineering of a 10 foot long power steering hose, etc. P.S. When my 11 year old daughter moved the front seat forward the warning light went off. I wonder???

We drive 100 miles a day to work round trip, and love the ride home at the end of each day. The car is an outstanding value. With the single exception of horsepower, much more bang for the buck than Chrysler Sebring or Mercury Sable. Very comfortable and roomy interior. Unmatched warranty. Only irritation has been three incidents where "Check Engine" light came on due to an overly sensitive O2 sensor. Minor fixes, all under warranty, corrected them, but could have done without the inconvenience. Perhaps the recall on the oxygen sensor will finally take care of this. Otherwise delighted with the car.

In the search for a mid-size sedan, shop around. The flaws that come after 2 years of driving are not worth the price I paid. I live in Canada, and paid $24,000 for the car. For that price, there are plenty of other good deals. There are too many unreliable things about the car. A 2 year old car should not be experiencing this many problems after 1 year. Maybe the Koreans just horribly botched my car, but I'm stuck with it due to the horrible trade in value I'm left with.

I almost bought a Toyota Camary, but felt like i was giving money to the wrong place. I stoped into Hyundai, expecting a noisy, tinny little econobox, but I was sure wrong. The styling attracts many people. I continously get compliments from Lexus and Jag. owners. Engine is a little noisy, but not annoying. Acceleration is pretty good. Interior design is high quality, but has some cheap bits in it.Comfortable. Hasnt caused me any problems but a popping speaker. Reliability has been excellent, highway mileage 28/29, and comfort is better than expected even for my rather large husband. Even with the moonroof there is plenty of headroom. No mechanical problems to date, dealer service has been excellent, and the styling draws admiring looks. The warranty, style, and price sold us.

I've had two problems already with my Sonata. The first was the engine seized upon acceleration as I was leaving work. They claimed it was due to engine cylinders breaking up - they found some parts in the oil pan. Now I have a problem with the computer it seems. The engine won't cruise with or without cruise control - the RPMs go up and down, acceleration is shotty on automatic (little better when I use the shift-tronic).

We first test drove, and almost bought a Nissan Altima, before we bought are Sonata. We found the Sonata to be more comfortable, more stylish, and a much better value. Our white Sonata, with optional moonroof, turns heads everywhere we go. We have literally came out of stores and found people peeking in our windows, checking out our car. The Sonanta is very fun to drive and takes turns like a sports car. The only downside is that the V6 lacks the horsepower of the Altima, Accord, and Camry. However the V6 far from dissapoints with great acceleration of the start.

Why can't Hyundai make a pretty car that also gets respectable mileage? This should be a top priority for them.

Just crested 20K mi and starting to develop several concerning problems; auto trans slips when down shifting into 1st or 2nd gear, difficuty keeping car aligned going through tires, left front headlight working intermitantly, check engine light just came on... Taking it to dealer in a few days, hoping the warranty and service will be as good as the car looks and drives. The proof has always been wether these cars would hold up, we shall see...

I'ts a sharp looking vehicle but the four cyl. is a dog. With the air on I could probably run a half a blook faster than the car. I also hate the climate control. When you start the car up the climate control goes to fresh air. This is not a possitive option when you live in the city. A lot of the time I forget to switch it to the cabin setting. I know this because I smell exhaust from a older car or bus. This is not healthy.

I thought the sonata would be a great investment - I thought more bang for the buck. I was wrong. I am having consistent problems with the brakes on this car. The brake pedal locks up and renders brakes unusable. After numerous visits to the dealership - it is still not fixed. This car is not reliable, defective and unsafe. Engine is noisy overall, as well. My advice? Get a Toyota!

Vehicle picked out by the wife to replace 93 Maxima. She liked the way it looked and handled. Passed over Nissan Altima and Toyota Camry. I love to drive it and I own Chrysler 300. Handling is great. Price is unbelievaable. Long range durablility could be an issue but bumper to bumper warrenty is unsurpassed.

Wind noise in window, limited back seat footroom, emergency brake handle rubs midleg, car pulls left and has been aligned twice with no success. Great looking car, great value for the $, Dealer has been responsive. Remember the early Honda's ? They were not much and look at them now. Hyundai will dupicate that success in the next 5 years.

Everything is good in the car but the drivers seat seems to be leaning over to the right side. My lower back hurts when I get out of the car after long drives. Need to make the seat less firm. Get the leather seats if you buy. Spend the extra money for the better seats!!

Bought this car over a Chrysler. Went to the "wrong" section of the dealership and figured what the heck, we'll look while we're here. Had a test drive, great! Didn't make it to the Chrysler section! wasn't necessary. Looks of this car are superb. Nice feel behind the wheel, drives well. Price and options are incomprable. Anyone with a budget in mind should consider one of these cars.

We decided to drive this car on a lark. As soon as we got in the car, we fell in love with it. It was so responsive that it seem to just take off with barely a touch on the accelerator. It was a dream to drive, particularly on the highway. A roomy, comfortable, quiet ride is very important to us and this car certainly fit the bill. It also has a nice solid feel on the road. We were just amazed that we could get so much car for such a reasonable price.

The car looks like a Jag and handles great. I was really pleased to have my warranty extended to 6 years and 72000 miles due to their horsepower mix up. Many people have told me the car looks great.

HYUNDAI HAS COME ALONG WAY SINCE THE '80S AND I THINK THEY'VE PUSHED WAY AHEAD OF ALL THE COMPETITION AND HAVE ONE HECK OF A NICE QUALITY VEHICLE TO SELL. EVERYTHING FROM THE COMFORT, STYLE AND CONVIENIENCE ARE ONLY SOME OF THE BEST FEATURES. I THINK IF YOUR IN THE MARKET FOR AN ALTIMA OR ACCORD YOU SHOULD DEFFINETLY CHACK THIS OUT FIRST!

I recently rented the car; wasn't supposed to get a Sonata, but the compact I ordered wasn't available. At first I thought, Hyundai... oh no. Boy was I wrong! This little Korean beauty really took my breath away. The ride is plush and responsive, similar to a $40k+ Lexus. The V6 is quite ample and quiet, without tempting a 27-year-old male into a Mario Andretti syndrome. It looks like a Jaguar, minus the hood ornament. I have never bought a new car, but at this price, I can't afford not to. I challenge anyone to find a better all-around car for the buck. I will buy one as soon as I can; for now, I'm extending my rental another week!

I really took a chance buying a new car on the internet and had never test driven the car, but I haven't regretted my decision for one moment. I knew the moment I first sat in the driver's seat that I'd made the right choice. I've since driven 4400 miles in the 6 weeks that I've owned it and am still looking forward to my next long trip. Just going back and forth to work is not enough. It handles nicely - city and wide-open spaces. I like the style of it, inside and out. I'm getting better gas mileage than I expected.

Some problems with this car have appeared in the first 7000 miles. First, the sticker states MPG as 22/28. I drive using the cruise control on highways, and never travel more than 3 or 4 miles above the posted speed limit. My MPG has been 16 city, 21 highway. Second, there are no window gutters on the doors. Get in your car in the morning when the car is covered in dew, roll down the windows and watch the water drip onto your leather seats. Third and most important, after 3500 miles the engine developed a very loud valve rattle. It now sounds like a 6 year old car. Unfortunately, "it sounds like crap" is not covered under the warranty.

It reminds me of " I'm not going first....you go first. Seems some people just won't take the chance. i did a lot of research on a ton of cars. For the buck I felt it was the best bang.

It smells. I thought the their was a fire around the area. The salesperson told me its the car they spray it with a special fluid. I smelled it during the whole test drive. When I parked the car I wanted to test drive another one because I thought perhaps it was just this car in particular. I was so dissappointed and went to another dealership and the same thing happen. I fell so in love with this car after test driving a nissan altima that I bought the Sonata GLS. He told me that the car will stop smelling after 150 miles has been used. Is this true? Have anyone else experienced this?

I was a bit hesitant to buy a Hyundai after years of hearing of their shoddy quality, but the warranty soothed my fears. Went looking at Accords and Camry's, and was talked into taking the Sonata for a test drive. I liked it much better than the other two, and the styling has them beat hands down. You absolutely cannot beat the value of this car. Same features in a Honda or Toyota will run you $5k more. Very pleased with this purchase.

Bought my Sonota to replace a 1994 Sentra. Great buy for the money. Have 1600 miles on it. Only problem is with the paint on the roof and the dealership will fix it w/my 3000 mile service. The problem occurred b/c of condensation from the plastic cover that's on it for transport. Everyone thinks it's a Jag. Sharp looking and surprisingly fast. Switched from a 5 speed to auto with this car and was worried I would lose power.

When my wife & I had our first baby, we went car shopping to replace my old sports car. I looked at the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Ford Taurus, Acura & Lexus. We were floored at the average prices on the sticker. My father in law recommended Hyundai, I always thought Hyundai's product was not as good as the other makes, but was I wrong, we've had this car for almost 2 years, & I can definitely say that Hyundai has improved it's product by leaps & bounds. I am a very satisfied Hyundai Sonata owner & I didn't get sticker shock either!!!

If you are in the market for an affordable mid-size sedan, look no further than the 2002 Hyundai Sonata GLS. This sedan has it all, from styling to performance to elegance. The car looks like a Jaguar and rides like a dream. The 2.7 liter 181-hp V6 is lively and responsive. Interior is very accommodating for 5 adults and the instrument panel is laid out beautifully. Why pay upwards of $5,000 and more for a Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, or Chevy Impala? You would be wasting your hard-earned money if you did. Plus, the 10-year warranty cannot be outdone.

My last vehicle was a Toyota Camry. I was a little skeptical of "buying down" to a less expensive car like the Sonata, but am more than pleased I did. It is a slick looking car, and has plenty of room, power, and comfort - great value for my dollars. The only minor annoyance so far has been the "check engine" light coming on because I did not tighten the gas cap on a recent fill up. If the car performs in the long run like it has so far, I will not hesitate to buy another one.

1100 miles. I've got the "I can't believe I got all this for such a small price" feeling. GLS is sporty. V6 has plenty of power, makes a beautiful sporty sound when it revs a little higher. 16-inch wheels and Michelins give control and confidence, even in rain. Shiftronic is great fun. 4 wheel disc brakes. CD/tape/AM/FM has great controls, big buttons, and nice sound. Power antenna, heated mirrors, keyless entry, leather wrapped steering wheeel, theater lighting, fog lights. Firm comfortable seats, nice fabric. Powerful A/C. Faux wood is well done. Front doors close with nice 'thunk'.

Couldn't find one with abs. Payed $17,200 plus tax. I wanted a six cylinder for accelleration on the mountain passes and I'm not disappointed. Was able to easily do 80 going over the passes with power to spare. Others have commented that it looks like a jag, a lexus and a mercedes. I'm still in the first thousand miles so time will tell how reliable it will be, but they back it with a great warranty. So far, I love it!

Just chugging along. Not real quick but a great commuter car. Handles very well. Shiftronic a must for getting on the freeway going uphill. Automatic shifts too soon. The styling had quite a few total strangers stop by and ask ne what brand is it. Front view does allude to the classy "Jaguar" styling ... Problem with transmission in the first week (apparently common with Hyudai) Good stereo (sadly popular amongst car burglars). Fun to floor it and very comfortable 3-6 hr drives ... After 8000 miles: Aptly compares to most import I rode in... The V6 + Shiftronic help for "tightly timed traffic light" + winters... Max speed of 122 MPH easily attainable. 4 discs brakes need getting used to. V6 purrs (the 4 cyl has an high pitch whine on accelaration). VERY VERY HAPPY DRIVER !!! *3* Thumbs up!!!

While I've only owned my Sonata (Black LX)for a month, I'd put it up against my wife's 2000 Honda Accord any day. The handling is responsive and sporty for a midsize sedan, the ride is smooth and quiet and the acceleration is more than I expected from only 218 horsepower. I have a fairly long commute and this engine provides better than expected power, coupled with good gas mileage for 6 cylinders.

We were looking for a new car for winter driving b/c we also own a 2001 BMW. Test drive Hondas, Toyotas, Mazda. For a comparably equipped Japanese car we'd have to pay more. Never thought about a Huyndai. Almost bought a Protoge until seeing the Sonata in the dealer's lot. One test drive and we were sold. The car has been flawless. I am extremely glad I got this car.

Extremely reliable car. No problems yet. Rides very well, climate control is excellent, a very nicely complimented automobile. I would highly recommend it over the Camry which is $6000 more. The dealer is always happy to help us in any way and is courteous. We only had a problem with their finance man, and we got an apology and $$ from the dealer to resolve his rude manners. We are quite pleased at 6600 miles. The car could use a tad more HP for the sport minded. It has 181 and is peppy, but 181 is still 181.

I recently decided to leave the world of backyard mechanics behind and move up into a stylish new car. A recent 90,000 mile death of a Ford made the Hyundai warranty attractive, almost as attractive as the car itself. Just over 3,000 miles on it, loving every minute of it! I put a few complaints in below, but only because they asked.

The whole Hyundai experience from walk- in to drive home was superb at Tom OBrien Hyundai in Danvers. The 2002 Sonata is commonly mistaken for a Jaguar so the new styling is definately a winner. The V6 power is super and the ameneties seem endless. The heat is exceptional and the AC is incredible. I test drove Camry, Galant and Accord. The Accord was great but I couldn't force myslef to go an extra 5 grand for a comparably equipped vehicle.

I have had this vehicle since October of last year. I get "double takes" because they either think it is a Jaguar or Mercedes, initially. I have a problem with the blower fan that draws on the engine, and makes a vibrating noise when put on 3rd setting (speed). Other than that, this car is awesome!

I've had my red 2002 LX (fully loaded) since November, and its been nothing but a positive experience. I highly recommend getting the LX: the leather seats have been very durable, despite the abuse they have taken my two dogs. In fact, the seats still look brand new! Even our New Beetle's leather seats looked shabby after a month or two. I still get a kick out of people staring at my car! Also note that although the outside styling is very different with this model, the engine has not been remodified too much, which cuts down on the risk unexpected suprises. This was a big selling point for me.

Bought a 2000 Sonota in Sept. 2000. The car is great. Sun roof, wood trim, etc. The performance is very good and the car gets 29.5 mpg on a trip with 4 adults, luggage, air on and driving 70. Big negative. The dealer was terrible. The sales manager was a thief. I knew the facts and stood my ground and got a good deal. The car was worth the hassle.

Bought for value with features? Was leary at first? After one year of driving it and with a few long trips under its belt I fell in love with it. I have a trailer hitch attached and found it quite capable of pulling a decent size load. Gas mileage city around 23 mpg (imperial) highway average is around 35 mpg (imperial) Only problem I had is when getting gas filled up If the gas cap isn't turned tight enough the check engine light comes on and It's a trip to the dealer to fix it.Dealer excellent!!!

My previous car ,a '95 Altima, was paid off (at least the loan was) but I found myself in the repair shop almost every month with bills more than a car payment would be. So I decided to look for a new car. I test drove different cars from the leading manufacturers. Since my previous perception of Hyundai was not very good, Hyundai was not even in my radar until I saw an article online about the redesigned Sonata. I was presently surprised when I went to my local Hyundai dealership, saw and drove the new Sonata. I have driven 7500 miles so far with no problems. So far I am very impressed with the 2002 Hyundai Sonata.

The Hyundai Sonata, driving is believing. I've had it for 1 week- I have the slate grey, which in MA is hard to find in GLS or LX. It's very stylish - I added Sunroof and wind deflector. Car rides nice, quiet and smooth. I didn't get the ABS, didn't feel I needed them. Was driving a 99 Corolla- what a difference. I got the car for a good price- about $2500-3000 less than the CAmry, Accord and Altima. If you're looking for luxury but can't afford it- the Sonata is for you- drive it, and find out fore yourself

My dealer saw my vehicle for its first oil change. I love this vehicle. My son has an Elantra and will be trading it in for a new 2003 Tiburon. Does that say something about quality

I have owned two camrys, the last one for eight years but had a lot of electrical problems with it for the past three years. I needed a new car but I had to buy a more affordable sedan with a v6, I was surprised to see the great styling inside and out of the 2002 sonada, even more impressed with the v-6 shiftronic ona car under $20000, placement of controls and large stereo buttons. My beef, and I'm sure many others was the usual b/s games the sales people play. I'd rather they go to a no hassle policy like some dealers and post a realistic price on the windshield instead of having to play a game with the sales creeps.

Just bought the LX with every option for $18700 at local dealer. Received it with 50 miles, about 25 I put on myself test driving. Had a Chevy Malibu and this car hands down is much better in terms of ride, features and warranty. Almost impossible to find in my area a black LX let alone a Sonata LX, dealer only had 3 in stock and Hyundai (or maybe dealer) said it would cost $500 to get another I wanted. Dealer delivery was satisfactory. Had a minor problem with the remote door openers, fixed in two seconds before I left the dealership. Overall, the car has smooth acceleration, a little bit of a hiccup at the lower end, very little road noise, stereo is adequate.

I've owned a Tiburon for a year and a half, so I wasn't afraid of the quality. The Sonata seems to be a well built car. It drives smooth and is quiet inside. After owning several GM products that ended up costing me a fortune on repairs, I decided to get a vehicle that had some warranty to it, and a company that would stand behind it. I am very satisfied with the hyubdai products, and can safely say if the quality stays up, my next vehicle will most likely be another hyundai.

My wife and I purchased an LX in October that has been loads of fun to drive and is a real head-turner. So far it has been mistaken for a LEXUS and a JAGUAR. While it won't beat anything in the quarter mile, it will do 80 mph (which is my limit) without breaking a sweat. It is extremely comfortable behind the wheel and visibility all around the vehicle is great. It is loaded with all the features that I ever wanted in a car but didn't want to pay for and the warranty gives me piece of mind should anything go awry. I agree with the rough idle comment and the car is less then appreciative when asked to operate before the engine is warm.

I did a lot of research before buying this car. You simply can not get all these features for the price anywhere else. I purchased this lx loaded from a dealer in NC. I don't know how reliable the car is as I have only put 2500 miles on it so far, but the warranty surely makes me feel good. The fact that the bumper to bumper warranty runs out at the same time most people pay the car off is a big plus. I've never had a car warranty last as long as the payments. Overall the car rides and looks great. If you are simply looking for a big name then this is the luxury car for you.

I have owned the Sonata GLS, V6 about a month now. I'm liking the car a lot so far. The interior is very comfortable. There are many nice touches: center console in the back seat, leather wrapped steering wheel, and lights everywhere. The V6 has good acceleration and handling. It's not as soft as a Taurus but not stiff or harsh on rough roads. The Michelin tires make a difference. My wife likes the car too and says she may skip the Nissan Altima and get a Sonata -- and save $4,000 to 5,000. If reliability is good, the Sonata will be a great value.

Good first impressions of the car. It rides very comfortably and quietly. Alot of car for the money. BUT be prepared to know your service writer on a first name basis. Mine proved to be very problematic. Brakes (front and rear) power windows (both front windows, twice) various rattles etc. Worst, I had a continuing engine cutout problem that finally caused me to file for the "lemon law" in my state. Hyundai Motor America was not helpful in any way. BEWARE!! You DO get what you pay for. Mine is now gone at 22000 miles.

I have a 99 sonata. The reliability of this car sucks... I cannot remember a 3 month time span that this car has not been in the shop for something. The airbag light comes on 1 every 6 months, the oxygen sensors keep going out. There are 3 of them. Now after 60000 miles, the wheel bearing in the back tires have gone and it cost over 300 to replace the bearing as they do not sell only the bearing. It is the whole wheel mounting. And since it is front wheel drive the rear bearings are not covered by the power train warentee.

It would be difficult to find a better car for the price, or even a few thousand more. Even though I dislike the mushy suspension, it's a very comfortable and substantial highway cruiser, and has enough power -- even with the 4-cyl -- for the average driver. Nice touches, like Shiftronic transmission, Michelin MXV4 Energy Plus tires, illuminated window controls, strut supported hood and trunk lid, over-center trunk lid hinges, fog lamps, big radio/CD buttons, extra power outlets. There's plenty of interior space for four large adults. All in all, it's an extremely good car, and affordable, too.

Handling is good and the engine develops plenty of power for accelleration and Interstate cruising. I tested VW Passat and Nissan Altima. I started leasing Sonata 1.5 month ago. I expected it's going to be easy on gas, but as it turned out it's not. I had owened Buick Lesabre 1989 and found that both consume gas evenly. Buick with 3.8 engine and 250,000km and Sonata with 2.7 and 3000km. I like stepping on gas but this car doesn't inspire you to put gloves on. The rest is perfect. I can't say anything about reliabilty so far. We'll see. The price, the features and the look are great.
