Had this car only a short time due to an unfortunate accident but put 15000km in that short time and the car was very reliable only problems were the the radio/cd player died and the rust ate through the left lower control arm. So if your looking at getting one just look for rust around the suspension.

Bought new, and never babied! It gets neglected and abused! So the fact that it's still going strong, with nearly 230,000 miles on it, and hasn't needed any major repairs, is AMAZING! Oil changes done when I get around to it, often after 10-15k miles. Never brought it in for scheduled maintenance, but did get a complete Tune-Up once or twice. Original clutch lasted for over 200k miles! The radiator and thermostat were replaced the year prior. A few things have worn out, or about to: Driver's door won't lock (bad relay switch) making key fobs useless; the motor for the driver's power window is slowly dying; can't change time on clock; high-beams turn on randomly when using the turn signal.

After i graduated, im trying to find new car but couldnt find a good as elantra. very comfort, nice interior design, But after i my parent want to change to a MPV, i no need to take a long time to think, I just take elantra to become my 1st car. As owner, continue from my dad to me, from 2002 ,elantra serve us well.Almost 3 years with me, driving more than 160K KM, i maintained this car never give me a big problem. even my friend also compliment this car engine is smooth and never make noise. Hell yeah , now i will keep this car and wait the elantra 2011 coming to Malaysia. until now, Im die hard fan of Elantra.

Bought this car Feburary 2003 with 7k miles on for $11,300 and still own it into 2012 and don't plan on selling it. It has 106k miles on it now and the only problems i've had with the car were the e-brake cable boot came off when driving in snowy conditions and the cable froze. Warenty covered it. My blower motor quit working on low speed which was also replaced under warrenty. My map sensor failed at 98k miles and the vehicle died. it started up 20 minutes later and was able to make it to a repair shop. I am hard on vehicles and I will admit I bought this vheichle for the warrenty. I drive it hard everyday and it keeps on running smooth averageing 33 mpg.

I brought the car in 2007 with 32,000. Besides needing to take it in after a couple of months because of a bad transmission range switch, it was good just needed normal maintenance. I sold it a couple of days of ago because at 1116,000 miles the transmission started to slip which a any transmission work would cost more than the car was worth. Overall considering the age of the car and the fact that it was in the rust belt, it was pretty good.

Bought my 2002 Elantra new for 12K. Have driven it for nine years 94,000 with only regular maintenance. No problems other than frequent head light replacements. Rotors replaced twice now. Some warranty work. Timing belt replaced at 80K only because the manual said to replace it at 50/60K. Recent check engine light came on, however mechanic can not find any problems. Still running on original exhaust and rear brakes. Overall a good car for the money.

Bought in 2005 with 40K miles. Clean and solid. Since then: new clutch, control arm failure (recall), brakes, 2 sets of tires, plugs and wires, O2 sensor and still needs catalytic converters, fuel vapor sensor and exhaust manifold. And still less than 100K miles. Body still solid and clean but cannot give it away since not inspectable. Now looking at the other H-car that really will last.

I have had many cars over the years, and this is by far the best car I have ever had! I bought it when it was 2 years old and had about 20,000 miles on it. Today is the first time I have had to replace anything, back brakes, and it has 95,000 miles on it! Otherwise I have only had oil changes and new tires. I plan to drive it for 2 more years and then give it to my daughter when they turn 16 - it will be a great first car for her. When I get another car for me, I will definitely get another hyundai! (And the hatchbback is wonderful - it's like having a SUV)

I got my elantra with 54,000 miles on it in 2007 and the only complaint I have is that I had to keep replacing the headlights. I loved my elantra so much. It was recently totaled in a head on collision and I walked away from the accident with just the pain associated with car accidents. My elantra did a good job protecting me. She took care of me like I took care of her. I will miss her. I never had any issues with my car. If I found a 2002 elantra with low miles on it for the age of the car I would definitely buy it.

I have owned my 2002 Hyundai Elantra for over 8 years. I have over 230,000 miles. Best little car I have owned. I liked it so much I purchased another Hyundai Elantra this past year. This will make 3 Hyundai's in the past 20 years. My first (excel) I passed the 200k mark and then donated it to charity. I enjoy the ride and have had very limited problems. I average 29-35 mpg on the highway and around 25 around town.

I bought this car brand new in 2002. I don't know what the other people are talking about but I believe they've had 1 recall since then. I never had any problems with this car until I moved to a place that had crazy humidity and drastic weather change. Then I had a few problems here or there due to the drastic change, but that's it. I would absolutely buy another Elantra in a heartbeat.

This car does not seem to have two separate braking lines. We had a back brake line leak, that left us with no braks at all. This could have caused a accident if it had not happened on our drive way. I thought it was a required on all cars to have separate lines coming from the master cilider to the front and back,so that if you get a leak you don't looses all your braking. This car has only one brake line out. This would be a good reason not buy this car. We like the car other wise but did have trouble with fuel pump $800 worth and trans mission sensor $400. After market Parts are hard to get thus forcing to go to dealer and pay there prices.

I purchased my car with 7 miles on it, I now have 85k and for the first 4 years was happy with it. Lately, I had to replace the transmission, rotors & brakes, battery , lights, radiator, alternator, and a few other things. This with making all scheduled maintenance appointments. This car is only good when it's new, once you pass the four year mark, be ready to put some dough into it! I'm getting rid of mine, never to buy another one!

This car was ok at first. Nothing fancy although it's always been terribly uncomfortable on your back. The leather seats are hard and have never softened up. Now at 75K miles all four struts need to be replaced and there is a weird humming from the rear end. It leaks water going through the car wash - always has. Some rust on the rear wheel well, thought it would have held up better than that, but maybe because of the salty winter roads. Have replaced all the brake pads and tires, to be expected. The clear coat is chipped up pretty bad on the hood from gravel? I waxed it (black) and every pit showed up white from the wax. Oh and the hatchback struts? wont keep the hatch open anymore-Annoying

I had good luck with dealers in Mass and in Florida. I get regular oil changes and tires when needed. Brought this car brand new. Great 1st car for me. Do you see how much the 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour looks like the Elantra GT.

Bought new and haven't had a single problem to date (150K). Dealer serviced for oil changes every 3k since I got a "free oil changes as long as you own the car" when I bought it. That deal stopped when the dealer changed ownership but the dealership was great all that time. Overall extremely pleased, more so when considering the price and class of the vehicle.

I am the current owner of the 2002 Hyundai Elantra that my mother purchased brand new in 2002. From the time it was purchased there have been numerous recalls and so many problems with this car. We have had both axles replaced recently, the car is constantly at the shop and it is terrible. Terrible to drive no pick up what so ever. There is nothing good about this car.

I bought this car for my daughter in-law on October 31, 2009. The worst mistake ever. The salesman said this was such a good car. Had not owned it a month when check engine light came on. It needed a new head gasket, water pump, timing chain, valve cover gasket. Since all this work it developed an oil leak when it is drove on a trip, must be a high pressure leak. Hyundai dealership does not have good enough mechanics to figure it out. I will never buy another Hyundai. I will always stick with a Toyota or Honda.

I have a great history with Hyundia. I bought a new 2002 elantra and drove it for a year. Gave it back due to a bk, to have cheaper pymts. Then bought a 2002 Sonata, returned it two days later, due to hating the big floaty ride. Got another 2002 Elantra, formal rental, with 22k. 6 yrs later 189k and counting. My friends cannot believe that I still use this car for my daily 100+ miles commute. Service history: The first year, it had service to fix a throttle sensor, no cost. Next year the battery, no cost both under warranty. At 96k changed timing belt. The only bad thing is that you have to replace the headlights every 6 months. Oil changes every 10k, tires, one set of brakes. @30mpg. Sweet.

Good car. Only issues I had with the car was when the dealer worked on my car. Changed the timing belt on advice of the dealer but when I looked at the old belt it looked almost new. Replace front rotors on the wheel due to rusting ($100 each). Other than that I have no issues with the car. It made it through the crazy upstate New York winter like a chap. Like the go-cart feeling. For the person who did not like the steering feel, take it to a mechanic and tighten the steering column.

I have 70 thousand miles on my elantra gt, replaced rear brakes at 50 thousand miles and I do a lot of stop and go Las Vegas driving in the heat, front brakes at 55. Not bad at all. 35 mpg on hwy at 68 mph, only warranty work-- new tie rod end at 49 thousand miles along with torn left cv boot, leaky sun roof and a leaking rear strut, still have the 3 other original struts in the car all work covered on the 50 thousand mile defective part warranty, the dealer told me about at no cost, 450 dollars for timing belt at 62 thousand miles, a 4 1/2 hour job not like the old days, I would never try to do it like I did my old Chevy prizm too many parts. Hyundai totally honored their warranty-

This car has been awesome!. I got this used with 8k miles for less than $10K and now it has almost 100k miles. Never had a mechanical problem. Performance and pickup is the best in his class. I love the handling, the exterior design and interior space. Could have more interior features. I went to the dealer this weekend to have a full checkup (just in case I want to sell it) and they found nothing at all. So I'm thinking on keeping it for another 3 or 4 years, it depreciates too much (because the brand and not the quality), now is worth around 3K.

Pros: easy on the eye; very roomy interior for smallish car with nice leather; nice suspension that handles bumps very well, gives impression of heavier and higher end car. Cons: Engine runs very hot, maybe inefficient design since gas mileage below average; sheet metal very soft (thin gauge?) and prone to dings and dents; very uncomfortable front seats for interstate driving; headlights burn out too often; sun roof causes annoying hums and air pressure waves when used. I would not recommend this car although it is average and of OK value for its price. My advice if you buy one is stay well clear of Hyundai dealer who scam you by calling every 3,ooo miles a "service" at $100+

I have been in 3 Major accidents in my 2002 elantra gls the first 2 did nearly $10,000 in damage the third was a total loss where I only received $3,500 for my car from Allstate. This car does not have anti lock breaks (abs) and it has poor traction control. In all 3 accidents none of my airbags deployed. My insurance sky rocketed. After the second accident I never felt safe again. The feeling of sliding and then slamming into something is something I will never forget. Save your self and other people from elantras and avoid them like the plague.

I bought this car brand new and have driven 122,000 miles with NO major problems. The suspension, exhaust, and air conditioning are all holding up well and have never been serviced! The ONLY thing I think Hyundai could have done better is increase the time between replacements of the timing belt which is set for every 60k miles. Dealerships want to charge over $1100 for the service, but I can get it done at Midas for $450 - it's a pain because they usually want the car for the entire day. Even with that, the maintenance costs have been super low and all I do is regular oil changes. I hope to keep this car for another 80k at least!

I keep up with my cars maintenance as I should yet I have had multiple problems and my car is only at 60,000 miles. At 30 my power steering pump blew. At 40 my driver door sensor broke. At 50 my radiator and my thermostat blew literally. Despite the readings of my coolant level. It was perfect and all of a sudden smoke was coming from my hood. I do admit that the handling is good yet I had a Toyota and didn't have my first problem until I was at 120,000. Plus the problems I have had are pretty irregular, my mechanics at the dealership even were to admit. Plus Hyundai put a lock on the oil filter so that only they are able to change your oil filter. They say its to protect me but we know why.

Bought this as my first brand new vehicle, had plenty of used ones. This car was the bargain of the century. I got the loaded GT hatch in black and the ONLY complaint I have is that the paint wasn't the absolute best, but I never has any rust or paint loss. With plenty of pep I could pass at 60MPH with the AC on no problem. Tons and Tons of cargo space with the seats folded flat. I drove this car freaking everywhere in every climate at every altitude this country has to offer and had zero problems with performance or build quality. Anyone complaining about this vehicle either bought it used from someone who didn't care for it, or bought it high mileage. BEST.CAR.EVER.

Nice plastic wood finish, engine not hard on oil and engine very peppy for a 2.0l 4 cyl. Only paid 1500$ and I knew I had to put money in it but I didn't mind cause Hyundai is a very reliable brand and that my car will last for another 198,00 km ; )

Bought new in 2002. It had only two very minor repairs during the 150,000 miles I had the car 1)coolant thermostat (replaced myself for $30. 2)Headlight bulbs - replaced nearly 3 times...not very expensive but a little inconvenient. The car was extremely dependable on a daily basis and very fuel efficient. However, at 150k miles, the thrust bearing went out in the engine, meaning I needed a new engine. The replacement cost would have been about what the car was worth..$3000. I would highly recommend the car but would suggest calling a dealer first to see if the 02 models are known for this particular engine problem.

Bought this car used when it had 66,532 miles on it. It now has 69,880 miles on it I cannot drive it due to a cracked high pressure power steering hose that can only be purchashed as a dealer part. Cost of hose is excessive (I priced them so far at 189.00 to 205.00 dollars) while at the mechanics that the car dealership I purchased the car at told me to take it they found 5 other things wrong with the evap system when they did a computer diagnostic (the check engine light came on just before the power steering hose blew) just 3 weeks before these problems occured I had to replace both headlamp bulbs just 3 days apart at a cost of $36.89. Overall I am very unhappy with this car so far.

I bought this car at 99,000 miles to get out of a gas guzzling van. I was wary, but now I'm won over. I love this car. Good pep, good nimbleness, good gas mileage, good comfort. This small car even has leather seats and a sunroof! I looking for another Hyundai for my kid and stating to look for another used elantra in a more recent model year for me.

I got this car when this was all I could afford. I have 94000 on it. I've had some things go wrong with it. I had the transmission replaced, under warranty. The car is strange when I started it, it stutters for about 5-10 seconds when I press on the gas. Fixing the transmission has not fixed this. Other than that no problems whatsoever. Very reliable.

i'd rather have a yugo.

No fun, no power, and phantom electrical issues. Been ok reliability wise, but is no fun. Steers like a Mack truck, rides like a Jeep with mud tires, and even after you sacrifice all the enjoyment of driving you only get about 24 miles a gallon. Thats not good enough for me. If it got 30 or better, then ok.

Reliable, but some maintenance woes

Just paid off the car. Let me start by saying that the car runs like a dream, is exceptionally roomy for a compact, and maintains speed very well (a must when I drove it across country when I moved from the west to the east). Bought new for the warranty, but everything that went wrong was maintenance parts. Don't get me wrong, It is a fabulous car. You just need to know that you have to replace the headlights every year and tires every 1-2.

Good for a first car...

I got this car in 2006 and it had 54000 miles on it. The first problem I ran into was at about 62000 miles when an engine seal blew, which was probably because i was doing burnouts using the e-brake. Then at 73000 miles i had to replace the brake pads, which is apparently a common problem with the elantras from what I've been reading. It is important to note that I coast a lot instead of slamming on the brakes so 20000 miles without new brakes was probably due to my driving style. At 74000 miles the head gasket blew and caused the oil to leak into my radiator and now my engine is toasted. The entire time i drove the car it always drifted to the right, even after i got the axle changed @ 7000

I've read several of consumer comments while shopping for a new car. I bought my Elantra in 2002. It was a base GLS, no options for $9990. It was a lose leader. I owned the car for 5 years and 50,000 miles. The cost of ownership was lower than any other vehicle period. I changed the oil, rotated the tires and replaced the tires at 46,000 miles. That's all I put into the car. No windshield wipers, no battery, no brakes. Everything worked fine. The car was extremely reliable, started everytime and got me from point A to B. The car was totaled, so I'm looking at replacing it with a 05 Elantra. I had a manual, no issues with the clutch or gear box. I drove this car hard and didn't have an issue.

A little trooper she is.

Six months after buying my Elantra, I was hit from behind by a semi (which pushed me into the car in front of me). Other than a pulled back, I was fine. My car, on the other hand, had to have quite a bit of work (body and two things under the hood). Over four years later, I've never had a problem with the engine -- despite her smash- up. I'm no mechanic but that record speaks to me of her reliability more so than if she'd never been in such a collision.

AC and heat work awesome. I've had my Elantra GT for 5 years and I absolutely love it. It's given me no problems, it's fun to drive and with the hatchback and fold down seats it has a ton of cargo space. I opted for the manual 5 speed, I really didn't think the automatic had enough pep in it. We're now in the market for an SUV as well and we're definately looking at Hyundai - can't beat the value.

Bought vehicle on $ & Hype also liked idea of not buying used and getting someone else's problems. It worked, I got my own. 5 years 3... oops now to be 4 sets of brakes. Bumper to Bumper warranty? They looked at 1 wheel, 10 minutes say it's not covered asked 1400 to fix, refused and they charged me 85 as a diagnostic. Suggested I am hard on brakes, my last vehicle had 185,000 with only 1 set of pads. Body dings and scratches very easily, window molding is actually black tape, which peels and bubbles. Body rusting.. guess what, not covered. Can't trade in only can get 2500 market is flooded with these

I purchased this vehicle used (lease return)with 83300kms on the clock. It has exceeded all my expectations. The only trouble I have had was the failure of the front speed sensor on the auto transmission. It would not let it shift to 3rd gear. I was able to drive at 80kph to the dealer where it was replaced. The transmission shifts beautifully. I plan on another Hyundai as my next vehicle, and I highly recommend it to anyone who asks. The only downside for me is the control for the cruise. It is not as convenient to use as the buttons on the steering wheel used by other manufacturers.

We bought this car new in 2002. We test drove Toyotas and Hondas and tried Hyundai on a whim. Price not a factor, this was still our favorite of the three (Civic, Corolla and Elantra). It doesn't have much of a personality and some people sniff at the name badge, but for our money we couldn't be happier. We've replaced the tires and brakes and have 57k on the vehicle now. We get 33-36mpg highway. People complain about resale but we plan to keep this little econobox until it won't run anymore. My highest compliment for the vehicle is that we bought it while I was still in professional school and now that I've graduated I’m still proud to drive it though now we could afford something more.

The best there is in small cars.

Since I purchased this vehicle, all I've had to do was to service this vehicle for normal maintenance. I just recently replaced the radiator at 142,000 miles. Other than that, it's just been tires, brakes, tuneups, etc. The car has nice pickup for its size engine and on of the coldest a/c units I've ever experienced. Last June, someone in front of me kicked up some 4x8 pieces of wood on the highway. The car took it like a champ, and although had extensive front end damage, I was easily able to pull over on the shoulder of the road, even though the car obviously had to drive over the debris. The hood took most of the impact, was repaired, and I'm back on the road at over 145,000 miles.

It was a cute, fun to drive little car. Gas mileage was decent. It did act up on a cold start for a while, had it to the dealer 5 times, they kept giving it back with same problem, so that's a service dept problem, not the car itself. I recently was in a head on collision on the highway. The car was totaled, but the passenger compartment stayed intact. The front end absorbed most of the force before it got to me. My most serious injury was a broken heel, so compared to what could have happened, that car did an amazing job of keeping me alive. My head/face was untouched except for a bloody nose from the airbag. I'm definitely considering another Hyundai for my next car.

I couldn't be happier with my 2002 Hyundai Elantra GT. It's been trouble- free for more than 20,000 miles, it's reasonably fun to drive, and it gets great mileage, especially on the freeway. My wife complains that it is too small, but it is what it is, a compact, economical, comfortable car. Also, with the hatchback, it will haul significant amounts of cargo when necessary. I even fit a set of full- size soccer goals into the back on one occasion.

I haven't had any major problems w/this car at all. I did have a recall which they fixed no problem. Everything else has been smooth sailing just about. The only thing that is a bit of a problem is are the lights- the die a lot so you have to keep replacing them, especially the fog lights. The car is quite durable, I've been through a few dings, and no problems. During one snow storm, I ran straight slam into the highway railing very fast and very hard and just knew the car was done for b/c of the sound of the impact. Somehow the car keeps driving, I get home, check it out, only 2 scraches, not real damage. Awesome. Gas is good, I'm getting about 28-29 per gallon. Trunk space awesome.

Anyone considering an Elantra should know this! I considered getting an Elantra because of all the airbags/safety. I ended up keeping my car, and glad I did. In January it snowed and I made it to my destination safe (wrecks everywhere) when I hit black ice turning into a parking lot and an Elantra was sitting there. I hit the Elantra going 3 mph and dinged the door HORRIBLY. NO damage to my car!!! she needed two new doors and a new hinge, this is a huge safety concern and should be taken into account. I’ve seen other reviews with gov’t crash tests where the airbags did not deploy in time and did more damage than if they hadn’t gone off at all. My wisdom, choose wisely, do ALOT of research.

Great for driving to work 60 miles a day. Looked at buying used but price with warranty buying it new was better deal. Did have throttle position sensor go out - driveable home and parked it. Called 800 road side service number, tow truck at house within the hour and towed 56 miles to dealership at no cost and repaired at no cost. Manifold cracked in 8/05 - already under recall notice so replaced at no charge. Good gas mileage, dependable, stand behind warranty. Best deal for work miles and just day-to-day running around. I bought this car as a compromise between practicality (no more station wagon) and fun. I found the car to have more safety features (ABS, side air bags, TCS) and luxury items (leather seating, remote control mirrors) than any other similar vehicle. Can be stuffed full of cargo for trips, pulls 1000 lb motorcycle/trailer, lots of pep (never felt sluggish except when passing at high speeds - fully loaded - which I shouldn't be doing anyway). No repairs in three years. Great warranty, roadside asst plan.

I'm at 35,000 miles on my Elantra GT and have loved every bit of the driving. Car warranty is excellent and valuable. The car has just been fantastic. I'm glad I did not buy a Honda or Toyota based on reputation alone. Rather, I did my research on Hyundai, found out that their mgmt changed in the late 1990s and that their new focus was on quality. That shows through with their new models, so if you are a Hyundai hater, then you are just misinformed. Take a test drive! These are fantastic cars and I have high standards!!! Hands down better value than civic or corolla, plus you get the warranty. Only downside is resale value. If you buy one, plan to drive it for a long time.

I bought the Elantra GT used (45,000 miles) and have owned it for 4 months. Like every vehicle on the market, you truly get what you pay for. It's been very reliable in getting me from point A to point B, but other than that, it offers very little. I feel it's way too low to the ground and the pickup is as good as a lawnmower. I made the dealer replace the brakes because they were so loose, and on a few occasions it had trouble switching gears despite its automatic transmission. The stereo is weak and the "dinging" noise the car makes when the door is open is excruciating painful. Other than that, it has performed well and met my expectations, but I will upgrade within 6 months.

In 3 years, I never had any major problems (other than clutch going out after 12 months due to San Francisco hills), but had lots of minor problems: brake lights constantly going out, cruise control went out, CDs stuck in CD player, worn-out floor mats, paint dinged easily. That said, the car was mechanically sound and suited my needs well as a basic city car. Wouldn't buy another Hyundai, a) because I can afford something better now and b) because I can't get past its inherent cheapness.

Good enough for a first car. Many small problems for a car with <35,000 miles. If you don't have alot of money it's ok and better than a used car, but for a little more a Toyota has much more value and quality. Would not get another one.

I bought this car in May, 2005 for my daughter (it only had 28000 miles). I own 2 mercedes' and a vette, but this car was quite comfortable and well built for the price --- definitely a great value. On July 4, a drunk driver collided with my daughter head-on on the freeway (est. closing speed of 140 mph!). My daughter survived with bruises and a back injury which she will recover from --- but, she may have been killed or paralyzed in another car (as was the passenger of the other car). As I see it, this car saved her life!!!

Look at something else before you buy this lemon; bought new and from the get go,brakes were awful.Countless times to the dealer for brakes and 2 summers in a row for the air. I finally got tired of the vibrating steering wheel on the hwy, after many times at my mechanic's shop for new brakes and balancing. Bought a Toyota, trade in was awful.I stood firm and got the mimimum on what Edmunds says here. I will NEVER buy another one.

Purchased in 2002, put 38,500 miles on it since. Only complaint: brakes started to wobble at 15K, dealer said the rotors need to be resurfaced. Supposedly the extreme temperature differences in the AZ mountains warped the metal. Not covered by warranty! That stinks, especially since my brake pads are still over 1/2 good. Car is roomy for my huge dog with the seats folded. Tires and FWD perform well in snow at 7,000 feet. Love this car and will buy another Hyundai when this one is out of warranty - despite the brakes. I just live with the wobble. Had Chevy, Grand Marquis, Audi before. The GT is the most reliable by far.

This car is great it is roomy and fun to drive and holds up well with day to day driving. Like the rear disk brakes but only if you have abs. I have found that if you put fuel injector cleaner and a stp 4 cylinder oil treatment every time you do the oil, (which is only another couple bucks) you get alot better gas mileage out of the car.

This car has a few things going for it: leather interior, blue dash lights, fog lamps. It seems reasonably solidly built, and the engine is powerful enough for me. However, I think the essential cheapness of the car is evident in some of the mechanical and safety components. There have been 2 safety recalls, the catalytic converter had to be replaced (warranty) and the transmission had to be reprogrammed (warranty). The transmission is still clunky, the car vibrates under braking (cheap rotors), and also at highway speeds. The steering is totally numb (think '72 Olds), so the car is no fun to drive. Headlights awful. Windshield awful in rain. Hey, it was cheap. Next time, Mazda 3.

Bought my silver GT in Fall 2001 & have really enjoyed it for the past 3 years (current miles = 29K). I really like the body style (similar to a Saab 93) and for the price I got a LOT more car than I would have in a Honda, Toyota or VW. There are some ongoing & annoying “defects” (e.g. windshield washers are always getting clogged, gas tank door latch must be pulled several times to open, a lack of lighting in the rear seating area). But again, for the money I got a reliable, fun little car that I love and that I’m sure I'll continue to enjoy driving for many years to come.

I've been pretty disatisfied with the poor gas mileage I've been getting the longer I've owned this car. When it was new, I was getting about 28 mpg in the city, but that was still less than my average 30 mpg I'd been getting from my '94 Mazda Protege. Also, performance has suffered, too. Now it seems like the engine isn't breathing right. I've taken it in to my local dealer and they've been great! But my mpg continues to decline; I'm now getting barely 23 mpg/city, 29 mpg/highway. Also had some hesitation problems upon intial ignition; FYI, there is a fix for this at your dealer. Ask them to update the software on your car's computer.

I bought my '02 Hyundai Elantra GT new and currently have 27K miles on the car. This car should get better mileage for such a small 4 cylinder. I get about 26 MPG with my 5speed. My biggest issue with this car is the brakes. They are honestly unsafe and I don't trust them at all. I already had to have my brakes redone at 15,000 miles. Conveinetly past the 12,000 mile warranty(it is a DECEPTIVE warranty btw). I'm currently looking to purchase a Jeep Wrangler, I've had it with this cars brakes and subpar performance in the snow for a vehicle with FWD and traction control. The Michelins on the car are bottom of the barrel garbage. Resale is a joke.

Didn't like the color of the car at first because it was a midnight gray but it grew on me for being very different. Sometimes it would like like a dark blue or purple under certain lighting conditions. Seats are quite comfortable and the engine has pep. Easy to maintain, my only complaint is why did they have to put the fuel filter in a place hard to get at. Warranty is also quite good. overall value of car I would purchase again.

I purchased it for gas mileage--I got much more. Surprised to find that it was fun to drive, very reliable and well built. I drive 100 miles/day highway and am averaging 32-34 mpg (One tankful even reached 36.4!) I presently have 49,000 miles on it. The only problem was a burned up windshield wiper motor. Was replaced promptly. I have never had a better experience with any other car AND the service department from the dealer where I bought it. I never thought any dealer would care about quality after the sale- --I was wrong. If this is the new "HYUNDAI", I will be buying another!

This car isn't that great(actually it's junk). I want to like it, but I still wish (more now than ever) I'd bought a Honda/Toyota. The handling is quirky, but adequate. The brakes are weak (try panic stopping). The clutch is weak and touchy. The motor does make adequate power. Fuel mileage is the bottom end of mediocre. Also, plan on putting new tires on it every 10,000 miles (or less) once it gets older. The dealer has been worthless. They won't even look at the car. "It needs aligned." I just had the thing aligned 1000 miles ago (and this is the 2nd time because of tire wear).

I'm 6'4" and very comfortable in this car. The ride for a small car is excellent, better than an accord we also own. Gas mileage not up to expectations; however, I have found that non "reformulated gas" delivers about 36 mpg at 75 mph. Unfortunately it isn't available locally. Have brought the car in twice for minor service. Both times, dealership broke something and had to wait for parts. At least they gave me a new Sante Fe to use, and it cost me nothing.

I have owned my Elantra for almost 2 years now. I got this car just a year after my wife got a 2001 Elantra GT. It has well surpassed my expectations. My wife had a 92 Elantra brand new and it was just horrible. I can truly say comparing the two is like day and night. The ride is quiet and smooth. Lots of storage! Gas mileage could be better especially for a stick. You get more for your money with this car than other in this class, and it won't cost you an arm and a leg. Very Practical.

This is not a bad car to own, however you should make sure you want to keep it for more than 2 years if you buy one. The resale value has not bounced back from early bad reviews, so if you finance, you may find yourself owing more than it's worth if you try to sell too soon. On the up side, it's comfortable, has a great sound system and looks nice on the outside. I like that an affordable car came with a power moonroof and CD player. The gas mileage could be better, but is within the acceptable range.

My wife and I were in the market for a secondary, slightly used car for our household. We looked at Saturns, Ford Focuses, Mazda Proteges, etc etc...in other words, something reliable but not wanting to pay the $$$ of a used Honda or Toyota. We never considered a Hyundai. Then we noticed a neighbor down the street with a nice looking Elantra for sale. Further Investigation revealed a 2002 GLS with only 11,000 miles and a price tag around 6K! After driving the car, it was pretty much a no brainer...it now sits in our driveway...What a wonderful little car at a steal of a price.

After owning a Tiburon and having no mechanical problems with it, I purchased my Elantra GT. I knew it to be a steal with all of its standard features and great styling. So far, I've been just as happy with this Hyundai as I have been with my first. The structural integrity is incredible. I was hit three times by a drunk driver in a hit and run accident, and my car didn't budge from its lane. The leather interior is as beautiful as it is utilitarian. People tell me it looks like a SAAB. I got the look without paying the high premium I would have for the SAAB. My neighbor teased me about purchasing the Elantra; his SAAB has been in the shop twice this year.

Fell in love with the car on the test drive and haven't regretted the purchase yet. Very firm handling and good pickup on expressway driving - much better than former car (Saturn) Really like the exterior design - still see other drivers checking out the car - and the leather interior is a nice plus. The Hyundai rides nice and has pretty good power. We have had issues with a connector to the fuel tank, and with a sensor that caused the car to sound out of gear at certain speeds, and with a low idle. The car looks nice and for under 13K is still a pretty good deal, especially with the warranty.

Many of them have remarked how nice it is when I give them a ride. The support after I bought the car has been incredible. Hyundai is really catering to the consumer, which I like. In October of last year, my (then) fiance needed to get ride of her Ford Explorer (the differential was due to go). She wanted a new car but didn't want a car that sold for more than $12,000. The reviews the Edmunds staff as well as the readers swayed us to try it out. That car is a BLAST to drive! It had tight handling, a lot of safety features (standard) and an overall nice feel. We just bought a 2003 Honda Accord LX and because I work 50 miles from where we live...I want to put the miles on the Elantra, rather than the Accord. However, I can say with complete honesty that I don't dread it. The Elantra is a joy to drive.

I've had the Elantra GT for a year, and love it! Anyone "on the fence" about a Hyundai should really check out their new line -- esp the GT. These cars have terrific build quality, are reliable, and the features that cost an additional $3K-$4K in other cars are INCLUDED in the GT. Wife owns a Honda and she loves my car! Any fault that could possibly be found is beyond minor when you compare what you get vs. what you pay. Love the look of the car. Friends constantly stop me to ask if it's "really" a Hyundai. The photos on the site don't do it justice...Do yourself a favor -- put it on your list. Trust me, you're definitely NOT "settling."

Bought this for my wife a year ago. She likes is better than her 1996 Saturn which we now seldom drive since it has become the dingy for our RV. We both feel with higher seating and more leg room up front it is more comfortable than the Saturn on both short and long trips. It is well appointed with all of the controls in easy, logical reach. It's peppy and handles well in traffic. Our friends who are rather tall even have room in the back seat. And to top it all off, it looks great.

I bought my Hyundai Elantra GLS stick about a year ago and have put about 10,000 miles on it. I traded a 2000 Beatle to get this car with all the bells and whistles. The Beatle handled like a sports car so I wasn't expecting much when I switched. What a surprise. This car handles just as well and better in some cases. Steering is better, suspension is great, trans is easier and it has lots of room inside and in the trunk. it has the same size engine as the Beatle and all the power you need in a car this size. I strongly recommend this car to anyone on a budget and even those who aren't. You won't be disappointed.

I was a little wary at buying a hyundai by thier past reputaion but not any longer. This car is great! It is fun to drive with tons of features. I was lucky enough to get a program car that came with the moonroof with shade and a cool looking rear spoiler. I am very happy i bought this car and way better than my '91 pontiac sunbird. great price too.

The Hyundai Elantra GT is everything it was purported to be in 95% of the reviews I read. Mine has the two available options packages, power sunroof and Traction Control System with ABS. Many standard features including A/C; Leather seats, steering wheel and door trim; AM/FM/CD; 4 wheel disk brakes; side airbags; and many other items. Good handling on various road surfaces. Have driven the car hard and fast. Lots of power available when engine is mated to the manual transmission. Finding a GT with the manual was difficult, especially one fully loaded with the chianti paint. The only negative issues are minor. Overall this car is hard to beat.

Cannot beat this car!!!!!!!!! 5 STAR A+

I was looking for a new car and spent time reserching makes model and prices v/s quality. I narrowed it to two makes and models. The KIA Spectra GSX and the Hyundai Elantra Hatchback GT. I drove the KIA first and did not feel well about that experience. When I sat in the Elantra GT Hatch, it was instant Love. This is a great car with Standard Leather Seats, CD, Cruise, PW, PL, and a well laid out interior. You will not find a better warranty and some dealers are offering 12/120000 mile warranties if you buy from them. Super quality and Hyundai is now ranked equal to Honda quality. I can believe it. Get em while they are cheap. And remember Read the B.O.M.

Bought the GT 8 months ago, put 7K miles on it, changed oil once. No other maintenance or any problems or rattles to report. This is the first new car I've ever bought. Did a lot of research and haven't regretted spending less money than my friends who bought Hondas and Toyotas. I'll be done with payments a year before they will be... If you want a reliable, sporty, economic, AND comfortable car consider an Elantra GT.

Have owned many vehicles--vans, SUV, sedans, sub compacts--this is among the best I have had--as soon as I brought it home, my wife decided she liked it more than her 2001 pearl white Sonata, a larger, more expensive vehicle. For all of you looking at the more expensive Corollas, Sentras, and Civics, please do yourself a favor and drive this one also. Happy car hunting.

This is my first new car and it's everything I could have asked for. I just got back from my first road trip (1200 miles round trip), the seats are comfortable, the ride smooth, enough acceleration to get around the tractor trailers and excellent gas milage(I got 35 mpg on my trip). The car is decent in the snow, not an AWD vehicle, but capable enough. I would recommend this car to anyone looking for a brand new car, especially with the HUGE warranty and the huge list of standard features.

The power is invigorating and makes the car fun to drive in manual form. If driven normaly, gas mileage is good for engine type and car weight. Features leave me wanting for nothing.

I've had my Elantra GT for 6 months now, & I still love it. It is fun to drive & very comfortable. Although it is a very inexpensive car, it still has all of the options & style of one twice as expensive. When you think of buying a new car for less than $20,000, you think of having to sacrifice options like leather seats, lumbar support, or a power sunroof. I was very pleasantly surprised to find all of these options & many more inside the Elantra GT, & the best part was, not only was it under $20k, it was under $15k! Once I took it for a test drive, I knew that I was sold. It fits perfectly into my budget, as well as my lifestyle!

I bought an Accent in 95. I was completely surprised at how reliable this car was.I drove the heck out of that car, and finally it came time to upgrade to something bigger that I felt safe driving around L.A. in. I shopped around for a good 4-5 months and drove several different cars. I was a bit biased towards the Hyundai, so I spent a little more time at Keyes. I had a great meeting at the dealership with the internet managers and they could not have been nicer. I got a great deal on a great car. My Elantra is comfortable, handles well, feels great on the road and gets excellent gas mileage.Hyundai makes great cars and deserves more respect.

used to drive a jeep grand cherokee which i ran into the ground. bought the 2002 elantra after doing a lot of research. liked the standard features offered and bargain price and warranty. generally like the car but find it to be awful in bad weather (rain/snow). car doesn't hold the road at all, slides all over. generally like the car but wonder if i shouldn't have bought another 4 x 4. also have problems with the rear doors not shutting firmly. brakes squeak and wipers scrape. this after only 5 months of use. a sign of other nuisance problems to come ????

Excellent car! As a college graduation present, we gave our daughter our 2001 Elantra GLS sedan. So, Dad needed a new car! Having compared it with other cars in its class (of which there are none!), Elantra GT beat them in overall value, standard equipment, horsepower and interior room! Not to mention euro- style and looks! I chose the Rally Red over the other colors, just to be different. If you ever make one in yellow, I'm there! I put almost 9,000 miles on it in less than 6 months. Love to drive it? Yup!

We drove it for a year. With 300 miles long distance trip every week. Nothing needed repair, just smooth. My hus just had an accident and walked out unharmed at all. The car was totaled mainly because the cost to fix it can buy a new one. We are happy with the result especialy my husband is not hurt. Next vehicle is going to be the Santa Fe and we currently still owns a Tiburon. We believe we have put our money into true values. We paid 14000 total for the Elantra, which includes tax, etc.

I bought a 2002 Elantra (7 months/ 3200 miles, as 2nd car). First off, poor mileage for a small car, < 20 mpg city driving. Engine revs up until 30 mph, then RPM spikes up, and shifts to higher gear. Once there, it drives well. Small rear seats, esp with infants car seat in the middle. Flimsy trunk hood and that leads me to worry about overall quality -unsure how sturdy it is in a collision. For all that, the car has its plus points. Drives well on the highway (40 mph or higher zones), AC works well, and nice defogger that clears up real fast. Handles turns better than Corolla (which I test drove), interior is much quieter than Saturn & 2002 Nissan Sentra.

When my last car expired abruptly, I had to move quickly to get a new car. I'd been aiming for a Toyota, but I had to set my sights a little lower. The Hyundai Elantra fit into my budget, though I was initially a little nervous about the Hyundai name. I needn't have worried. I've had no problems with the car at all, and I even learned to drive a stick on it. The gas mileage has been decent, if not an astounding improvement over my last car. The ride has been smooth, and it's been nicely responsive. No problems yet at all, though I'm reassuerd to know that if I do have problems like my previous car (not a Hyundai) gave me, that the Hyundai's warranty will cover those.

All the features I wanted, for $3000 less than a Civic EX! (And a 10-year warranty to calm my fears about reliability...) What about resale value? What I'll get less for it in a few years is in my bank account now--collecting interest. Love the responsive ride, ergonomics, large load capacity, Euro styling. Nothing rattles, automatic transmission shifts as smooth as butter.

The car handled like a sports car and was able to negotiate all but the slowest and steepest roads in 5th. Gas mileage 6.7litres/100km or 35mpg US. Drove at 60 - 75 mph where road conditions allowed. Researched this vehicle 1 year before buying. It's exceeded my wildest dreams.

First the cons... the trunk cover panel rattles slightly at low speeds and my AC fan developed a rattle after 10 months. Now the pros... Of 5 new cars I've owned, only my Honda Accord gave me less complaints in the first year. It's a true pleasure to drive. Great, responsive handling, generous driver and passenger room, solid passing power, and that gorgeous styling. I'm just sad to say that in 6k of driving, I've seen another one on the road once.

Bought the car in February and 9000 miles so far with no problems. My wife was extremely skeptical when I bought this car, but driving is believing, and she now drives it more than I do. Purchased without ABS and sunroof for $11,300. Great experience at dealership, and friendly service since. Car handles much better than expected for this class and comfortably seats my entire family. Originally bought as secondary vehicle to get me to and from work, but has quickly become the primary mode of transportation for my family.

Car rides really smooth, handles sharp, and comes with every option you could possibly want, plus looks better than any other car in its price range. If you compare this car to any other one in its class, it will win by a landslide, no contest.

Overall a neat car. my only complaint so far are the sweaty leather seats, would rather have cloth. As to horsepower, the specs say 140 HP. If this engine has 140HP, they must be Shetland ponies. My 1995 ford contour with a 2.0 litre 4 cyl. (122hp), and my 1995 ford probe with a 2.0 litre 4 cyl. (118hp)both have a lot more power than this one. The car does handle nicely and the hatchback is what I wanted. Just wish it really had 140HP.

What can I say? This car has it all! Every feature you could want, for an unbelievable price. I can't speak for the long term yet, which is my only trepidation, but Hyundai has the boldness to offer the best warranty in the business. I've had my car for about a month now, and I can personally vouch for the quality of construction and engineering. This is a truely well built car. Under the hood there is plenty of room to work with, which means maintanence and repairs will be easier to do. (Read: cheaper labor costs at the shop) Compared to the Civic Si, the GT has got it beat in almost every statistic available! Continued in "Favorite Features"

I took my new Elantra GT on a long road trip from Central Illinois to Vancouver, BC and back this July and had absolutely no problems. My other adult passenger, my two 50-lb dogs and myself were comfortable throughout the trip. The car cruised easily and quickly along the highway. I experienced very little driver fatigue. My average gas mileage for the trip was between 28 and 30 mpg.

Purchased the 2002 Elantra GLS manual 2 weeks ago. The car drives pretty damn good and so far it has exceeded my expectations. Overall the value of the Elantra is excellent considering the standard options, quality of ride and warranty. And when you compare this car to the compition, it's a clear winner. The 5 years TCO (total cost of ownership) on Edmunds uses the TMV (true market value) purchase price when calculating the cost per mile. I recalculated the 5 year TCO using the my purchase price and came out with .28/mile cost which is several cents below their number.Your Hyundai dealer will take invoice on the 2002 and give you back the rebate.

I can only find two things to gripe about with this car: rear visibility is less than stellar and the low beam/high beam switch should be a toggle style switch. Otherwise this car shines in all areas. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but this ex-European has no problem with the Euro-styling. The performance and handling seem more than adequate for a car with this much practicality. Long term reliabilty is something of an unknown and to be honest I wouldn't have bought this car without the 100k/10yr warranty. I have no regrets about buying this car. The only question is, do we need a second one?

Wow, this is a lot of car for the price. Just about everything is standard. Had to get a sunroof because of limited choice but that got thrown in for less than $400. In the end I bought at about $700 below invoice+ads+delivery (without a rebate!) by going through the internet rep. Amazing. Could have even gotten a GLS for about $1500 less but I wanted the standard leather interior and suspension of the GT. Added extras well worth it. Extensively compared Corolla,

I have been a loyal Honda owner - until now. Hyundai has done a very good job in the Elantra GT. I was looking for a reasonbly priced sedan and found the GT! It is pleasure to drive and the performance is ample for a car in the economy class. Kudos to Hyundai. The dealer was attentive and responsive to a few minor details that needed to be fixed. I have only 1600 miles on it so far and am continually impressed. I paid just over $15,000, as the car has every option. Averaging 30 - 35 mpg with mix of city/hwy. Quiet at 75 or so and stable.

I only have the car a week, so more will follow as time goes by. It was a fun expericne dealing with the dealer. (A tip of the hat to Jim & Woody.) The car with the automatic is a lot better then I thought it would be, I can't wait to get by my self imposed break in time, so I can open up the engine more. Fun to drive, I have the ABS with traction control, moon-roof, car came with spoiler, which was listed on the sticker, not a dealer add on. Check Carsdirect.com also, they had the spoiler listed to see invoice & MSRP. price, edmonds did not list it. C.D. plays well, just an enjoyable car. Will update info as I have car longer.

My silver 2002 Elantra is an all-around winner. The 5-speed is a blast, beautiful fit-and-finish, great ergonomics...seems custom built for me. Inexpensive AND turns heads at the same time. Best of all...gas mileage. With apologies to Edmunds and Consumer Reports, I am consistently getting 38 to 42 mpg with the A/C turned OFF while driving 80 all day. WOW! I own a 98 Chrysler Intrepid and never thought a compact car could subsitute in size, comfort, amenities let alone price! Have driven my little Elantra 400 miles since July 25th. Ride, fit, finish, style, this little guy has it all. I bought mine with everything but ABS and spoiler for just under 13k. I am truly impressed. I NEVER thought I'b ever buy a Hyundai, but driving is believing. This isn't the Hyundai of days gone by! You have to take one of these cars for a test drive. There's still the unknown of long term reliability, but the proof will be in the pudding. The warranty somewhat puts my mind at ease though.

I have had the car since December, already have 13,000 miles and am pleased overall. I have noticed a few quirks though. My car, although an automatic, seems to have difficulty shifting sometimes. It will shift hard on occasion and I can see the RPM's shoot up. I'm told they do this when they have not yet warmed up but I wonder if it is a sign of things to come. I also noticed that the AC only seems to work when I'm moving. If I stop at a light I suddenly get a blast of air that is a little too tepid for AC.

Don't underestimate this car.

How many people have you heard complain about the quality of Hyundai? So had I. But I actually did this thing called "research" on the 2002 GLS. What did my research uncover? That there was no way I'd find another car that'd let me walk out the door with all the standard options this car has, plus anti-theft, cruise control, spoiler and an AT for twelve four. Tax, title, registration and plates, people. Not to mention the beefy warrenty AND 24/7 roadside assistance for 5 years. I DEFY you to. It has looks I wouldn't get embarassed over to boot. Sure, it has it's drawbacks, but the gains exceed those by a wide margin in this case.

If they have I haven't found it yet. They've even gone so far as to put rubber inserts into the knobs so that your fingers don't slip off. It's a ball to drive and everything works all the time without fail. An excellent buy at any price.

I LOVE my Elantra. Although I did a ton of research when buying this car (it was my first new car), I was still slightly nervous about buying a Hyundai. After all, people often looked at me like I was crazy when I said that I was considering a Hyundai. A little over a year later, I have absolutely NO complaints. I haven't had a single problem -- not even a rattle. The car has great pickup, even with the air conditioning on (something that I've had problems with in the past). The interior includes all kinds of nice little conveniences that you wouldn't expect for such an inexpensive car. This car is a fantastic bargain.

I love this car! It has most of the features of a luxury sedan, but in a smaller, more fun package, and with a warrenty that leave me worry-free. I'm in college, so it's nice to have a car that won't have unanticipated expenses. It handles well enough in the snow, due to the anti-lock brakes and front wheel drive. I'm 6-4, and still have plenty of room to engage the clutch and sit comfortably.

Just bought the pewter GT (fully loaded)...I love this car! My brother drove it he was completely impressed. He is 6' 2" and I'm 5' 4. My brother had plenty of leg & head room. There is plenty of power for passing, normal excelleration and mountain driving. We had no problems with the power going up steep roads with the A/C on! Looked down to find us going 85 mph! This car has got performance! Good sound and I love that trip meter! So far I'v gotten 30.4 mpg (mountain driving, 75/85 mph and bumper to bumper traffic all while using the A/C!) All around a great car. I found it to be a better buy than what those other manufacturers offer! Get the GT.

I love it

I have only had my Elantra GT for a couple of months now, but so far it is everything I had hoped for. The fit and finish of the car is the best I've found for the price. The only thing I would change is the power, which I may do with the help of a supercharger I have found that fits the 2.0 engine in the GT.

WOW. This beautiful Carbon Blue GT AMAZING. Comfortable, loaded with features, and ride quality more like that expected from a luxury car. The car ride quiet; sits up tall, smoothe and silky compared to Civic EX. Amazingly, the GT $3-4K less than Civic EX . GT's ride is smoother, quieter, and the stereo better sounding. However, paint finish quality on the Civic superior. Considering other amenities like fog lights, digital clock, heated mirrors, leather seats, the Hyundai comes out ahead. Four wheel disk brakes--stopping power galore. Acceleration good. Car sturdiness and safety features (including side air bags) totally up to snuff.

Bought this car for my wife .... to replace her 97 Neon. Price was about the same as a new Neon, but what great additional features. The drivers seat is fully adjustable, and has lumbar support! It is a pleasure to drive, and the whole family fights to see who can drive it to work. I was attracted by the price/features .... I'm now sold on the features/quality/enjoyment driving. This is one fun little car that can easily handle a 500 - 1000 mile trip in comfort.

Lots of useless bells & whistles. If you wear fake Rolex you'll probably love a Hyundai. Scheduled maintenance expensive. MPG no better than my 20 y.o. VW. Couldn't get a comfortable seat position. No comfortable place for arm rests. Shoulder belt uncomfortable. Steering wheel only adjusts up and down not tilt. AC takes a long time to cool the car. Lots of road noise. I like my old car better. Great car when compared to a Yugo.

I don't know how they do it for the money. Once Hyundai realizes what a bargain this car really is - they will probably raise the price. I traded in my 2000 Beetle for a GLS 5 spd w/ all the standard features plus cruise, remote entry and alarm, stereo CD, woodgrain trim, moonroof, mudguard, and cargo net for $13,840. The dealer was polite, helpful, and gave me a great price on my trade-in. I took my Elantra home for $2500.00. This car is comfortable, logical, and a dream to drive.

I'm a big guy--6'2", 345 lbs. I also needed extra headroom--short legs, tall body. From the specs I saw on Edmunds, it looked like this car would fit, but I couldn't believe a Hyundai would even come close to being comfortable. I traded in my Ford Excursion for this because I run around Hollywood a lot. Wow, was I surprised. It's comfortable, it's economical, and (so far) it's reliable. You're not going to find any other new car this great for less than $15,000.

I think this car is an undiscovered value. All other 5 door Hatchbacks I look at were over $2,000 more plus no 10 year - 100,000 mile warranty! Also the list of standard equipment is impressive (leather, 4-wheel dics brakes, alloy wheels, CD, etc., keyless/alarm, etc.) Great driving around town or on the inter-state!

At just over $14k, this car may be the best value on the market in its class. After 3 weeks, we love it all the more. It's more comfortable than expected for its size, has just enough pep, and looks good. The GT's hatch is versatile for cargo. Rear 60/40 seats fold flat by flipping up bottom seats - nice. You can't get more for the money. After over 8 years & 120k miles with a Hyundai Excel, I'll attest to the long- term quality, low mtc. cost and reliability. Not to mention how far they've come in that time with design and value-added features. You can't go wrong with a Hyundai.

After a long search for my second 'New' car the GT won! I've owned over 20 cars (most used), but the Hyundai has been one of the best picks so far. Fit and finish are great as well as the options included. The interior is very comfortable for me and my wife, and plenty of useable room. Even with the auto it has good power, and I've been averaging 25-30 mpg with mainly city driving. Handling is very good for a front wheel drive car, and the stock tires hold well in snow/rain and dry conditions.

We purchased this new 2001 champagne Elantra GLS for my Mother in August of 2001. We purchase package # 3 which includes the moonroof, CD player, cruise and the remote entry. WE LOVE this car!!! I cannot say one negative thing about it. It is fun to drive along with being a great looking car. We paid $14,000.00 and it listed for $15,494.00. The dealership, Twin Tier Hyundai treated us like GOLD!! I currently own a 2000 VW Beetle and 1993 Nissan Maxima. I am seriously considering trading in my 1993 Maxima, with 126,000 miles, on a new Elantra GT!! I RAVE about the Hyundai product to everyone that I know.

I was totally shocked! When my wife and I started looking for an inexpensive second vehicle, we never thought that it would be a Hyundai; but the test drive sold us. I had no idea that it even had that much power for a Korean car. The design is just beautiful- updated and sleek- it also has a very nicely balanced sound system that I plan to add a little low-end for my liking. The colors are great to choose from and they even have nice upgrades. Totally satisfied and you will be too.

This is THE car. Try and find a 2002 Japanese car for the same price and features as a Hyundai and you'll be suprised how much MORE they cost. The hyundai just feels all around better. I test drove Mazda, Honda, Toyota, Dodge, Ford, and Chevy compact cars and this one beats them all. I wouldn't even consider this a compact car. My sister has a 2000 Maxima and this elantra has more room in it and feels more comfortable than the Maxima. The sunroof is also a nice touch. I recommend this car above any other unles you just like paying more for the name a car carries rather than it's value.

I've had my civic for 5 years and was reluctant to go through the car-buying process. After hours and hours online and in dealerships, looking at Corollas, Civics, and Focuses, my fiance's brother recommended a Hyundai - - he got an Elantra GLS. As soon as we stepped foot on the lot I noticed the GT, and as soon as I sat in it I fell in love! We ran home to do some online research -- this car has gotten some great reviews -- and went back to 'haggle' over a price. The guy was actually great to work with, they took our first offer in the low $14s. I LOVE IT! And can't believe there aren't more of these on the road.

Obviously the prices alone are going to make a difference, but for the price, I could not be happier with my car. Not only do I love how it looks externally and internally, it has pretty good pick up. I'm a twenty year old college student and its perfect if you want a mature, good looking car.

The Elantra is an excellent option for those seeking value and performance in an economy car. The ride and performance are first rate. Being an Acura owner, I am used to excellent fit and finish. The Elantra measures up to these standards; remarkable considering it costs half that of a 3.2 TL. Strongly recommended.

The Hyundai Elantra GT 2002 is an amazing car for the price! I have the automatic with the moonroof/abs and traction control. So far, I have not run into any problems of the car being too slow. If your buying this car, your main goal isn't to burn rubber against a corvette so who cares about the speed. But it's honestly fast enough for everyday driving and fun as heck in the city; mainly because of its cornering ability. It grips the road with ease at every turn. If you get the hatchback styling, you'll always have enough room for more than enough stuff to throw in the trunk, especially with the seats down. All in all, a worthy investment!

I traded in my 1990 Acura Integra for a new Elantra. The Integra had sports suspension, terrific handling, dual overhead CAM, and real spunk. I was afraid I'd have to make a "fun" sacrifice in order to have the Hyundai Elantra. I was wrong! It handles wonderfully, corners and accelerates well. And it cost the same as my Acura did in 1989!

I researched cars for several weeks and test drove several, including a Mitsubishi Galant. I have to tell you, I was extremely impressed with the Elantra GT on paper and even more so after the test drive, and felt it to be better than cars thousands of dollars more. Inside the car feels like a million bucks, and i think the styling is terrific (many have noted it looks like a saab). Test drive this car-- you won't be disappointed. I drove an eclipse previously (which cost 3000 more) and gladly traded it in.

Just bought an Elantra GT 2002 pewter with automatic. Great control in corners, the car follows very well the road. Good acceleration, even with automatic. The car feels very solid and is far from Civic, Sentra or Protege. Body lean is better controled in Elantra bacause of the suspension. I drove before the Sentra and Accord for about 1 year each. I like Elantra better, especially for it's price and features.

This was the one car my then-fiance (now husband) reviewed without me, so when he purchased it, without me, I was rather upset and also concern about not knowing much about it. However, since then, I have been amazed at how the Elantra has "handled me". We've since recommended the Hyundai name to many of our friends.

When I first saw the Elantra GT on the lot I was shocked that Hyundai had actually put some effort into styling. The GT looks European and the suspension backs up its image. The GT handles superbly for a car of its price and the engine is smooth and powerful, especially on the freeway. One test drive and this car will blow the others in its class out of the water.

I visited dealerships every day over a full week and test drove almost a dozen competing vehicles. I still can't believe that exactly the right car for me was also the cheapest. Of course this car isn't for everybody. But if you care about driving enjoyment, comfort, and most of all utility, test drive this car immediately! Besides looking great, the interior is highly functional and the seats are very comfortable for long drives. For some people, the exterior of any hatchback takes getting used to. But it won't take long to appreciate all that cargo area! Just don't be surprised when everybody asks you about your new Saab (or Lexus).

although just buying this car, on first impluse, its a great car to look at. It has a very "alive" engine and the noise is kept to a minimal. All the standard features will just blow you away... I managed to take home the "convenience package (which consists of keyless entry w/ alarm, cruise control, and a cd player upgrade)..so as of 2100 miles..im in love with this car. Although i am pro-hyundai anyway because i use to own a 2000 hyundai accent. In my honest opinion, despite all my respect for this company, I really do think they are making a honest and very respectable leap into making nice quality cars. GO HYUNDAI!

Awesome value, what else can I say about my 2002 Hyundai Elantra? I am a college student who was in the market for a great car at a great price and I found it. The car looks like it is worth far more then the $14,500 I paid for it - I'm often told that the front end looks like that of a BMW and rare end a Mercedes. The interor is simple yet sleek.

I love this car. I had a 2000 Ford Focus and it doesn't come close to this car. It has zip. It has pep. It is very fun to drive and you would never even know it was a Hyundai (as compared to those boxes of cars in the early 90's). I strongly, strongly recommend this car.

The Elantra is HUGELY underpriced. Dollar for dollar, it's better than the Civic, Corolla, or Focus. It's a big improvement on previous Hyundais... quiet, responsive, and comfortable with more than enough power. Options galore, looks good, well built. A great buy. I didn't intend to buy Hyundai when I went shopping, but it beat out every other compact car, and I looked at all of them.

I'm glad I did my research

I test drove the Elantra last December...compared to the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla and Nissan Sentra it won hands down. But I hesitated because of poor crash test results re: airbag deployment. I've had my 2002 Elantra for 2 weeks and love the way it handles. My "workhorse" 93 Toyota Camry still runs and looks good but at 190,000 miles it became a second car for my daughter. The Elantra is so much peppier and responsive. I had to get used to sitting a little lower on the road and more road noise. I'm having too much fun playing with the moonroof. CD feature is nice although I don't believe the speaker system compares to Toyota. Still checking gas mileage...with only 2 fills, between 25-28 mpg mostly city driving

Replaced a Civic LX with the GT, no comparison. The extras are wonderful, the sunroof appreciated. Best A/C I have ever had in any car. Snappy and responsive stick that is a great deal of fun to drive. No Squeaks or rattles. Smoooooth on the highway and VERY comfortable. Love the leather too! You can't beat the value with this car. Well made body panels are a plus. I gave the Civic to my daughter and I don't miss it one bit. The Hyundai is fun to drive, the Civic was always slow on the uptake and mushy to me.

I absolutely love this car. I will find myself driving down the road with a stupid grin of delight on my face. I walked away with this car for under $15K and almost feel guilty as if I stole it. The manual (my first) is a blast to drive. If you don't have a stop and go commute, I would definitely recommend the 5-speed. The interior is nicely thought out with alot of storage. All in all, this car has a little something for everyone. Sporty, roomy, efficient, practical, and luxurious (no joke). I couldn't be happier, because I didn't break the bank, but yet, I don't feel as if I compromised. I doubt I would've said the same with a Civic, or Corolla.

Face it...You are not going to find a better deal anywhere. Hyundai is not the company they used to be. What other car manufacture would stand behind their product for 10 years if they were junk? The Elentra GT is a great car. It is well built, solid, powerful and inexpensive. What other car are you going to get all power, LEATHER, alloy wheels, 4 wheel disc brakes, a/c, 6 speaker CD stereo for under $15,000? And those cool purple illuminated instruments are nice too! I LOVE THIS CAR!!

I am totally amazed by this car. It comes standard with pretty much everthing. It's fast, handles great with the standard Michelin's, rides good, is quiet at highway speeds and I always get 30+ mpg. I'm at 14,000 and the car has been flawless so far. Not so much as a squeak. The dealer and Hyundai have been great. I looked at Civic's, Toyota's, the laughable Focus and many others and the Elantra is the deal of the decade. More room, more power, more features and I got it for under $12,000. I drove Saabs for years but got tired of all the expensive repair bills. The Hyundai costs less than half as much and doesn't drive that much different.

I wanted vehicle that would better accommodate my 2 dogs, passengers, groceries, etc. I also wanted my new car to be sporty with a manual transmission and good safety features that came standard. Very few cars in my price range met my requirements. The Elantra GT did! I do have some "complaints" about styling and layout (the sunroof rattles, the front hood grill is a bit flimsy, no lighting in the backseat, the alloy wheels are easily scratched, the gas tank flap frequently gets stuck). Overall, I am very pleased with the Elantra GT's design and performance. This is a car I expect to drive for many years and I think it will hold up quite nicely indeed.

I can honestly say that I am most impressed with this vehicle. Standing at 20k on the road and many months in the passange/drivers seat I have grown to appreciate the ergonomics, powertrain, and the climate control system in this vehicle. For those of larger stature, this car is easy to access (6'4" and still comfortable in the front, less so in the back). It is more powerful than the competition yet it remains composed at all corners, unlike most econos. Value is the word of the day and this car aims to please the wallet and the commuter.

Hyundai has come a great distance since the Excel arrived in the 80's. This car does not rattle. The fit and finish is on par with Honda, the styling is above average. The interior is well-appointed. (the leather was a nice feature.) The car is very fun to drive. You really need to drive it to appreciate it. This car is an intelligent and as impressive a design as the first Saab 900.

I had to purchase a second car that was safe, economical, fun to drive, but most importantly inexpensive. I foresaw myself driving a stripped down VW Golf since I needed a hatchback for my dog. Then along comes the Elantra GT. The GT offers so much to a driver for so little. The interior is chock full of amenities that will cost thousands more in other cars; CD player, leather, trip computer, keyless remote... On the exterior, the upgraded suspension, alloy wheels and Michelin tires were a huge selling point. The engine is powerful though lacking good acceleration (my last car was a VW with a VR6). But the fuel economy speaks volumes.

With 133 ft/lbs. of torque, acceleration is not a problem and with 140 horsepower, highway passing is easily accomplished. The smooth design of this machine is one of the best around giving you a sporty look as well as one of class. Brake lights bigger than your head let everyone know when to stop! An A/C that will always keep you cool, even in the dead of summer. All the features needed to live in comfort and drive in style are right at your fingertips. It is truly an amazing vehicle.

A bona fide sports sedan, and all for a paltry $13,999 MSRP. The included equipment for that price is phenomenal. Even with the moonroof-ABS-traction control package, it's barely over 15Gs (plus delivery, fees, and taxes). Fit and finish is superb, inside and out. With the traction control option, the car refuses to plough in the corners, and holds the road like it's on rails, even in the wet. The gutsy 2.0 litre 140hp engine accelerates spiritedly, ride and handling are well-balanced, and NVH is minimal. Add the impressive warranty and 5 year unlimited mileage roadside assistance, and it's a deal you can't refuse.

This is my first new car, so my frame of reference may be skewed, but I think the Elantra's overall package is simply unbeatable. The exterior design is slick, the interior is sufficiently functional and solid, and the engine definitely has some kick to it. The one factor that amazed me is the turning stability and turn radius, which nearly equalled my Volvo. I've consistently gotten gas mileage between 29-31 mpg, with only about half of the mileage on the highway.

I traded in my 1998 Tiburon, only because I wanted the additional protection of side impact airbags and occasional use of the rear seat for adults. I was initially attracted to the GT when I saw one on the dealer's lot, and couldn't believe how much car was available for sixteen thousand dollars. Since my experience with the quality of the Tiburon was very positive, I had no reservations about buying another Hyundai product.

Nice styling, excellent interior. Two gripes that I have... first, for a 140-hp engine it seems to accelerate quite poorly, especially at higher speeds. Second, for some reason, the brakes squeal the first couple of times you use them after the car has been stationary for some time, say overnight. Otherwise a very decent package for a very reasonable price.

I purchased my 2001 1/2 Elantra GT in June of 2001. I now have almost 10k miles on the odometer. I am very pleased with the performace of my GT. I have had no problems with the car and it has been a pleasure to drive. The most impressive thing about the car is the tremendous value it offers. A similarly equipped vehicle in a Honda, Toyota, or Mazda would costs thousands more. With the GT, you can have all of the bells and whistles without feeling guilty for what you paid for them.

Great car

I looked at buying a new car for a long time and I am happy I went with the Elantra and even happier that I decided on the GT. This is a great car. And as long as it doesn't end up being a turkey like every other car I owned (the latest being a '96 Plymouth Neon) I will remain happy. This car has a good smooth ride, and is comfortable to drive.
