The height of the rear cargo floor off the ground saved my back for these many years. No bending over the trunk of a sedan anymore, to retrieve heavy grocery bags. Being able to slide onto the driver seat from a standing position was perfect. I was tall enough then. I'm shorter now. The solution.....a smaller SUV. I'm giving my big XLT to a friend. That big mean green machine still has a few good years left in her! That same friend, the day he takes ownership of my '02 Ford XLT is the day he parts with his '94 Ford XLT with over 250,000 original miles, and the original stainless steel exhaust system. There's a lot to say about the way some of the these vehicles were built 'back in the day'. Of course, proper care and maintenance is understood!

Bought the 02 in 04 with 17k on it. It is now 2015 and I have 110,000 miles on it. I have had a couple of recalls that were fixed, but didn't seem too serious. I have always changed the oil at about 5k intervals and it still runs smooth and great. In Oct. 2014< i had to have the transmission rebuilt. The problem occurred suddenly: Please do research about this because there is too much to say. Ford needs to works on this and hopefully they have for newer models. And it was 3,000 bucks to rebuild it at a Ford dealership. I still lack confidence in the fact that this problem will arrive in the future out of nowhere. I must mention that there was at least a 3 month waiting list for a new transmission if that gives the answer away for this vehicle. I just hope that I will get another 100,00 miles from the rebuilt transmission. The interior is just fine, comfortable, and fairly rugged. I must admit that I really love this vehicle because it drives so well and does excellent in the Colorado snow. If I go to 200,00 miles without any tranny problems I would say that this was the best bag for the buck. And I plan to do just that if I can. Overall, though, this is a great Four wheel drive vehicle that's been very reliable in every way except for the transmission issue.

Have owned this car since 2004. Bought with 45k miles, have right at 184k miles on it now and is still driven daily. It has never left me stranded. Decent gas mileage for an older SUV, keep it serviced at the Ford dealership and have had to put the usual front hubs and upper contol arms on it, which they are known for but aside from that, just routine maintenance. Great looking, relaible and reasonable cost to own!

Just finished our first winter with out 02 Ford Explorer. No problems. We are taking trip to NV in June. I went down to the dealership and had the transmission flushed and transmission housing oil changed. The cost for both was $299.00. When returned the mechanic noted that the engine was in excellent shape..he did say the coolant should be changed, and the right rear seal has small leak.if they do it 299.00.l hubby say he plans to changed coolant and oil same time before the trip. my husband also he will take of seal when we get back.. They also fixed the airbag wiring problem under the driver seat, that kept coming unplug when seat got moved up @ NO Charge! 64000 miles

The 2002 Ford Explorer is junk! Even Ford will not stand behind it. Lets see: New Transmission ($3k), new front and back timing tensioners ($2700), new wheel bearings ($400 each), new wheel springs ($400 each), new window regulators ($380 each), new back window ($800), new 4X4 module ($500), new fuel pump ($750), front suspenion things, work on the electrical system several times ($$), new O2 sensor, etc, etc. It's paid for but the problems started around 80K miles. Ford really made a POS. I know I am forgetting some repairs, there were too many. Quality is NOT job #1 at Ford. Time to buy foreign.

we just brought our explorer from dearship, its only had 58000 mile on the engine. By looking at you would think it just came off the assembly line. We love it. This are first luxury suv in twenty five years of marriage. I am married to retired car parts salesman and he didn't say one word about the cost of parts for explorer. Believe me first time ever!! Every other suv I thought about buying never ending. My husband now refuses to drive the old chevy which we still have.Hes in love with our car. its is gas hog, but after driving uncomfortble suv for nearly 15 years. The trade up was well worth it. This is my first SUV. I bought in 2010 with 96,000 miles. Now it has 125,000 miles. Things I have done: brakes, a set of new tires, regular motorcraft oil change every 3k miles. No major repair. For people complains the transmission problems, it's better to customize it with an external ATF filter and extra big ATF cooler. You should check the ATF level regularly and also its temperature (I also add a temp gauge). Because ford put a sealed transmission with this SUV, there is no way for regular person to check the ATF fluid level. With all these done, you won't have a failed transmission. Recently I drove this car from Austin Texas all the way to Buffalo NY, and back to Austin, never failed.

Purchased used in 2004. Clear CarFax, 1-owner, under 50,000 miles. 2 mths later Oil Leak, output seal leaking, replaced seal. In '06, replace leaking axle seals, May '07 loose front driver's side wheel bearings, rear noise inspected on lift, differential removed to find cause, replaced both front wheel bearings; noise STILL there. June '07 vibration & noise, remove rear differential, disassemble, left carrier bearing and cup failed, discoloration of bearing, replaced pinion & carrier bearings & cups, replace axle support bearings and seals, replace pinion seal, replace left rear wheel bearing, replace speed sensors, just tip of the iceberg repair list. Not worth it - horrible riding!

I bought this vehicle used 3 years ago. Currently has 115,000 miles on it. two years ago, rear differential started to whine (very common problem on this vehicle). I was told by several sources that the rear will last anywhere from 1,ooo to 1o,ooo miles and will cost a few grand to replace. Two windows died during the past winter (one was the motor, the other was the track). This vehicle will coat alot to maintain. If you can get over the rear differential problem, it is a good vehicle that will get you anywhere (I have taken it off road a few times, and the snow & ice of PA has never stopped me). Also, the little problems seem to add up alot!

I have to tell you .. this is a reliable family vehicle! I have a 2002 Ford Explorer 4.0 (4x4). We have the third seat. We purchased it in 2002 with about 18K miles on it. I am a mother of 3 & 5'10". I have total confidence in this vehicle! You will always have slight issues with vehicles but, this vehicle held out for many years! I have over 200,000 miles and have only done the following: - basic tune ups - brakes -oil changes every 3,000 miles (Motorcraft synthetic blend) - all four wheel barrings (But at 200,000 miles!) - Replaced the lower housing unit - it started to overheat (at 200,000 miles!) I'm getting a new truck after the holidays and will be getting a new Ford Explorer!

Bought mine used in 2004 with around 30k miles. Aside from general maintenance this vehicle was great until it 100k miles. Wheel bearings, cracked rear panel out of the blue due to design flaw and now at 150k miles the transmission is on the way out. Just got the dreaded blinking over drive light and found out my new trans will cost about 2k.

Mine was a demo when I bought with few miles on. Absolutely loved it for the first 6 years. 09 is or 08 is when I saw problems. The heat/AC went out. And then the wheel bearing started going (every 6-8 months one would need fixed) It has around 120k miles on it. Tranny died 3 weeks ago!-and on top of that 2 more wheel bearings need fixed on it plus tie rods. AND it is a gas guzzler! Its paid off but it is still costing me lots to keep it! So I have a LOVE/HATE relationship with my explorer. Goes GREAT in snow(only reason why I would consider keeping).I'm going for a more economical vehicle now.

Ford has built a truck with all wheel drive to help with horse power and grip when riding on wet roads awesome right?? no... a great idea in a lab isnt always practical in real life mine has 89k on it and needs a new transmission i went to a shop the other day and asked a guy about price said i have a 2002 ford explorer he goes wait look over there see all those boxes those are transmissions for 2002 ford explorers. you cannot build a full time 4 wheel drive vehicle that is this heavy and have only a 4.0 l v6 powerplant. this would of been a great vehicle with better gas milage and no trannsmission issues had they only put in a button to let u disengage the 4 wheel drive.

I have a 2002 Explorer Limited, but I have the V-8 model, and all I can say is that I absolutely hate this vehicle. The interior is of poor build quility, it's not roomy, comfortable, or very attractive. I am 6'7'' and also have a Saturn Vue and it has so much more interior room.The ride is absolutely terrible. You feel every bump and crack in the road. The transmission has gone out twice since I've owned the car, electronics work when they want to. I think that if your going to spend near $43k like I did (brand new), you can buy so many other vehicles that are much better and cheaper, and with less problems. The only good thing is the power the V-8 produces.

Bought it used in 2007 with 112K, few things had to be tuned, one ball joint replaced. Since 2007 only had to change battery and tires. CD changer does not work right, climate control has a mind of its own. Currently got 155k, rides OK. I drove it across the country several times, comfortable, enough room for everything.

This was the 2nd Explorer that I had owned. Traded my 2000 in because I liked the body style of the newer Explorers. Never had any issues with the old one. I absolutely loved the 2002 Explorer, at first! It is a piece of crap. Looks and rides nice but replaced numerous wheel bearings and the transmission was clunking and shifting so hard at around 25 mph that my kids kept asking me what I was doing. CD player stopped ejecting CDs. Driver side window motor needed replaced. Leg room in back for 3rd row seat very cramped. If this vehicle would have held up I would have kept it forever. Got rid of it before we had to replace the transmission. Got a Chevy Tahoe, which I LOVE!

Great SUV. love the 4x4. use it all the time. Only had 2 problems. 1) Passenger side external rear wheel bearing went out. $400 fix. 2) Brake pedal position sensor. $200 fix. No problems with tranny. I do pull a 1000 pound utility trailer a few times a month. I spend the time and money to have all maintenance done on schedule. I have about 117,000 miles on my 2002 explorer xlt. Take care of it and it will take care of you.

Like most Explorers of this vintage, the transmission just went at 96,000 miles. Major slippage from 2nd into 3rd, now looking at a $2000+ repair. This is a very common problem so beware if you are looking at picking up a used one. Ford knows about it, but doesn't care too much. Looking to see if there is a class action lawsuit in the works as it's not a question of 'if' but when this problem will occur in these trucks. Had been a pretty decent car up until this, now crossing my fingers that this isn't the start of major issues to come. Before this I was considering another Explorer in 2012, now probably not as these type of major issues seem to continue to plague American made cars.

I bought this slightly used with only 14k miles. Nice looking truck inside and out. But after only owning it a year, everything started going wrong. Interior lights shorted out and so did the mirror ext. lights. Coil spring went. Mechanic said it was a design flaw that fords knew about it. Wheel bearings all the way around at 40k miles. Power window problems at 50k. Then at 80, rear diff. and trans went so we got rid of it. It was a money pit. It still rode nice the day we got rid of it but too many repairs. My last Ford explorer purchase.

I bought the Explorer Limited and have been satisfied with it except for the transmission. During the warranty phase (5 yr/50K mile) Ford repaired the transmission but at 87K the trans had to be rebuilt. Again at 103K the trans was repaired by Ford Dealership (this time Ford paid) and they claim the fix it part as recommended by Ford Detroit was installed. I have lost confidence in my Explorer. Has someone had similar experiences w/ their transmission and will this fix it be good for another 80-100K miles?

Heavy Duty Clutch!

The heavy duty clutch is a loser! The first one went out at approx. 60k. Then it went out in Feb '10 and I still can't get a replacement because Ford stopped making that clutch. I guess even they knew how bad it was. I'm currently working with a clutch specialty shop in California to try and build a clutch from scratch.

The transmission has been rebuilt, wheel bearings replaced, and now the o/d off light is blinking, the service engine light is on and the ABS warning light is on. Apparently the o/d off light blinking means our transmission is not functioning properly again.

With less than 90,000 miles, I have replaced four wheel bearings, rear coil springs and struts, four wheel drive module, "Transmission" and now the starter. This is the worst ford I have ever owned, and Ford will not stand behind any of my break downs. I have owned fords all my driving life and this is the last one. I have over $6,000.00 in repairs to this vehicle in just under a year.

Have had three Explorers since the first in 91, No unusual trouble with any of them. The latest, a 2002 has been with us the longest 103,000 + miles. Just replaced the rear struts, the only other real expense was tires at 75,000 miles. Bought all 3 new and was pleased with every one. Quality is job one - well done!

I have had problems for the past 2 years w/ this vehicle. I have replaced 3 wheel bearings w/ in the past year and now they are loose again. I have the infamous rear panel crack, replaced fuel pump, replaced intake manifold, replaced fuel line, had starter problems, rear passenger door does not lock, door ajar light will not stop (WD40 is a temporary fix). I am afraid to drive it because the check engine light is always on. This truck is high maintenance. Ford Motor company does nothing to help. Basically every month I make a payment I feel like I am being robbed. CHECK OUT ALL REVIEWS BEFORE BUYING THIS SUV.

I have replaced 6 wheel bearings, rebuilt the transmission, changed window switch, the interior lights works only when they want too, heat doesn't work anymore, volume knob is broken, clicking noise coming from dash, 4x4 doesn't work, trim started fading to quick, leather seats don't hold up, rear passenger door won't lock and after all this the transmission is going out again. Don't waset your money on what is now known as the Ford exploder.

Purchased this car new and have had VERY few problems. Computer went out at 130,000. Bearings could stand to be replaced now (still on original set), I change the oil myself with high grade (purple magic) oil and 10K filter regularly at every 10K miles. Changed differential and coolant for first time last week. I have never serviced the sealed transmission on a mechanics advice. What more can I say. I couldn't kill this thing if i wanted. I would take it to Alaska tomorrow.

Bought this SUV with V6 in summer of 2007 with 95K miles on it. Sold it in November 2009 with 130K miles to a friend's daughter who just turned 16. It still looks great, interior & exterior. Only repairs during that time were 2 rear wheel bearings and the rear AC door actuator. Other people complain about having to repair items like wheel bearings at "only" 90K miles. Come on, be realistic. Once a car gets over 50K miles, it's going to need repairs from time to time. This SUV offers a great overall package. I've had 3 Explorers now and had good luck with all 3. They aren't perfect, but I've had several other SUV's also, and the Explorer is a great truck. That's why I've owned 3.

Ford puts out another horrible product. This is my secnd ford explorer, my mistake, first one 1998 engine failed 70,000. Culdnt afford repair so took advantage of a special offer and purchased a brand new 2002 one. Well after paying it off and enjoying only one car payment in this economy, after only 67,551 miles this engine died. I will never purchase Ford product again. Reliability terrible Ford service terrible, ford customer service center.. terrible.

We have had this explorer for ten years. We have had know issues what so ever. We have taken our explorer on multiple long trips. We have got as much as 21 mpg. A little uncomfortable but over all feels like you are driving a car.

I bought this suv with 36000 on it. I have replaced all four wheel bearings at a cost of around $450. a piece. That started at 46000. The four wheel drive modual went out at 87000, cost 490. It just turned 90000 and guess what? The transmission went out, cost 3,550. I have driven Fords for over 35 years and this is the worst luck I have ever had and of course Ford won't help, I ask the dealer about the tranny at a local dealership and he almost laughed. Not sure but was told the parts are made in Mexico! Go figure! Oh the heated seats also quit last year. Guess I don't need a seat warmer anyway, and I forgot the lift gate shocks, I replaced all four of them.

I bought this truck with 100 miles back in 2002 i have had 2 problems at around 112,000 miles the tranny went in 2008 then a few thousand miles later the alternator went besides that well maintained and runs great have about 128,000 and still trucking love my ford.

I've been a Ford man all of my life; until now. Should have read the reviews before I bought it. What a mechanical piece of crap. Afraid to even drive it, wondering what is going to need repairs next. Door ajar light comes on for no reason, 4X4 is locked in low. Was going down the road at about 25mph in 4 auto when low locked in. Thought I had dropped the motor and tranny on the ground with the violent shifting that occurred.I'm just glad no one was behind me when it happened. I bought this Exploder from my grandparents best friends in 2007. It had 69000 miles on it when i bought it for 7000 dollars. At 79000 miles the 4wd went out, right after that the o/d light would blink the airbag light would stay on and the service engine light came on and wouldn't go off. I serviced the vehicle regularly and and 84000 miles the transmission went out. I paid the dealership 4300 dollars to get a new tranny and now im at just over 89000 miles and its back at the dealership getting the 2nd tranny put in it! I will never buy another ford ever again. I have driven Fords all my life but this 2002 is the worse experience I have ever had. First to go was the rear AC, kept getting a click noise. Had it replaced under warranty, but then it went bad again just after the warranty ran out. Then had stereo also go bad. CD player got stuck, then 2 months later, volume would just start to get loud with no control touching. Master brake cylinder replaced at 42,000, and then the oxygen sensor, door trim @ same time. Then one very cold morning, I go to my car and notice a huge crack in the hatch below glass. I called the police because I thought someone tried to break into my SUV. Found later that others have the same problem. I am done with Ford!

Bought new in '02. The new car smell, and the dealer gave me a great deal. Loved the remodel from old style (Traded in '00 sport). Then reality hit. First time on vacation entire rear glass door assembly broke from hinges and I caught it luckily. Then had fuel pump assembly and tank relaced. Both under warranty thank god. Then the rear door broke again. Then the rear door cracked below the windshield wiper assembly. The interior plastic grey trim along the top of the door front seat doors along the windows has seriously faded. The black exterior trim between the front and rear doors has also faded. It now has 103K miles after 7 years and I will drive this into the ground.

On the hole, this has been a decent 'family truckster' for seven plus years. Major issues have been the leaking rear differntial and an alternator that quit on the freeway during rush hour. Transmission now starting to slip a bit at 87000 miles. Has been great in the snow and on other lnog-distance trips, good combination of passenger room and stuff hauling ability. I have been very pleased with my Explorer, look forward to having it for many more years.

Can't believe hearing about all the probs people have been having with these! Very happy owner here. Owned since new,112k miles on my 4 door 2WD 4.0 V6 as of now. Rear axle replaced at 30k under warranty. Front suspension components were all replaced finally at 100k. Some AC components were also replaced. No continuous or nagging problems. Took a 6500 mile road trip from Detroit to Death Valley and back without a lick of probs back in 05. 123 degree's at Furnace Creek and AC kicking ice cold. Great for the long haul!

I've only had my car 2 months but I love it I drove it from Missouri to California and back which is a total of 3,700 and had no problems but my brakes needed to be replaced once we got to California it drives just as smooth and quiet as it drove when we bought it.....I guess the only problem I have with it is the six disc CD changer sometimes gets stuck and its hell getting the cd's out

This is the worst car I have ever owned it is dangerous, expensive & unreliable. It started with fractured paint (over the whole car. I was told by Licardi Ford, where it was purchased, that I had the car repainted; not true!),the small back hatch exploding in my face, I then went on to replace: bad brakes,dropped transmission, broken front axle, broken rear axle, electrical system twice,the doors periodically go out of alignment & not close properly, and, when it rains, it rains in the car. Theres more but why continue; this is bad enough.

It's obvious now that Ford has a real problem with the wheel bearings on the Explorer. Today, I am having the 4th wheel bearing replacement on my Explorer. Right rear (once) Left rear (twice) and today, Left front (once). It seems inevitable that the next to go is the Right front. What a complete pain and drain on the wallet with each replacement costing $400. Other issues include body hardware and a way underpowered engine.

Loved exterior so much compulsive buy. Biggest Mistake I ever made. Friends had been driving Fords for years no problem. mine Blew spark plugs. Dealer wanted 3000 to replace heads. Luckily private mechanic repaired for 800. Only prob, it kept happening. 3 of 8 cylinders blew over a year so in all 2400. Trans problems too. I have to say it never stranded me and I put 147000 on it in 3 yrs. With blown spark plug engine ran and got me to safety.Replaced rear Bearings, and Brakes froze in "applied" position. This warped rotor, melted brake lines, and ruined pads. 700 in repairs. A PLUS though after going offroad and air borne into small river (knee deep in water upon exit)it never tried to flip

I see so many people posting about getting a crack on the body below the rear window, sometimes under the rear wiper. I had that on my 02 Explorer Limited in 05, but had it fixed asap as it was a recall issue. So if your dealer says they cant fix it... thats a bunch of bull. As for my Limited, I don't have it any longer, and wish I still had it! I have a huge commute and couldn't afford the gas when it went up to $5 a gallon, so traded it in for a sedan. Am now looking to get rid of the sedan and find another Explorer. The limited trim and features were excellent and I converted more GMC/Chevy and import guys that hated Fords with it. Also worth noting, never had any mechanical probs with it

This vehicle is nothing but problems! Transmission slips, had rearend replaced once already, car dies while driving. In hot weather car will not start no one can tell me why. Have had electrical problems. This car isn't worth the aggravation.

Vehicle gets a surprising 19 mpg on highway. AWD is great in snow, mud and beach sand. Sound system is awesome as well as front/rear AC. Easy entry and great visibility. But Ford really blew it underneath. I have replaced both wheel bearings front (once) rear (twice). Rear struts and springs after both springs broke. Emergency brake pad and cable twice. All four brake calipers twice as they froze up. As for the cars brains, I had to replace a very expensive security system computer module, as well as the courtesy light system computer. All this with only 71,300 miles and only one driver. My old Izuzu Trooper went 163,000 miles until the engine failed. Just brakes and a clutch there.

I loved this SUV and still do but after a wheel bearing went out and I almost lost the back wheel at 70 miles and hour (thank god the break kept it on the car). I then had the transmission start acting up, they quoted me quite a chunk to fix it, it has the delayed engagement of gears when you first put it into gear. Also the rear axle case leaks and has for quite some time. I looked up these issues and they are far to common. I hate to say it but since it is so hard to find manual anymore I guess I'm heading to a car... a Honda and it hurts because I have always believed in ford but I can't take a hit like this again so hooray for cash for clunkers.

Well, my problems seem to not be a coincidence compared to others. I've had wheel bearing problems since I got the car and the strip under the rear window has a crack. I've had this car towed once because the wheel bearings failing in the front almost killed me on the interstate. I can't believe it has such an average high rating on this site. The V6 is one of the weakest on the planet. If Cadillac can get 306 hp out of 3.6 liters, why does Ford manage 210 hp from 4? They still use the same crappy V6 and the mileage is pretty terrible too. Oh, and the ride is rough and the open differential is also terrible. If you have one wheel on mud and one on pavement, you're going no where.

it was great the first year, but i could have bought a new car with of how much i have payed to get things fixed on it. we also have a 1997 Nissan Altima and it is rarely fixed but our ford every 3 moths it in the shop. ITS A LEMON!!! I will never drive a ford again even if it was given to me. right now the rear heat doesn't work and makes a thumping noise, there is a massive computer problem, windshield fluid drips from the celling, the radio or cd player doesn't work ( and i have 6 cds stuck in it) there is a wheel bearing problem and it grinds, AND THAYS JUST AT THIS POINT IN TIME! DONT BUY ONE!!

Waited until I could afford Exp. 1st rear end replaced(warranty), then not under warranty was window motor, faded window panels and abs sensor. Then within last 6 months cracked rear panel in lift gate and heat/air fan control is stuck on vent. With in last week transmission solenoid pack needs to be replaced as do all 4 wheel bearings. When I contacted Ford they replied "we hope that your future experiences with Ford products will be more positive." Huh?

I had owned the previous model Explorer and liked it. Pluses for this model included a nicer ride with less cornering sway, a bit roomier interior. Cargo space is excellent for hauling all kinds of camping gear. Only initial downside was that the car is noisy on the highway. That having been said, the car has been a turkey. Transmission #1 failed at just past the warranty mileage for a $2.5K repair. Now that transmission is failing at the same point - perfect planned obsolescence. By 80K miles I had to replace all four wheel bearing sets, and both rear springs. Had several expensive cases of engine oil leakage which required replacing engine seals. Interior trim falls off. On & on.

Just passing 91000 miles of nothing but city street travel I have replaced the internal components of the steering column twice which cost to date $3000.00 and the rear bearing for $600.00. The transmission has slipped since day one and I don’t want to know what that will cost to repair, the rear differential seals are leaking and the front bearing are starting to go. I am getting rid of the vehicle this weekend! It's Doge for me!

The car has performed well with very little service issues other than the computer going out at 135K ($1,400). Other than tires, one brake change, and oil, I have put no money into this car considering I have almost 150,000 miles on it. I would feel quite confident driving it to Alaska today if I needed to.

Too bad Ford shot themselves in the foot with this model.. Beautiful ride, but the transmission has a severe flaw in the valve body. It was NOT milled correctly meaning the fluid equals out to not let it shift.. Ford should have redesigned a new trans and recalled all 02,03,04 . What are they thinking selling us a $30,00 dollar defective SUV?

This is my 3rd Explorer.Obviously I like them and find them to always be a good buy used.Probably because there are so many of them.This one is a fully loaded XLT including sunroof.As I had to replace a transmission in my 98,I was very careful about regular and preventive maintainence.Didn't do any good,replaced transmission at 103000mi.About $1400 if you dont use a dealer and are a good shopper.Since I bought this unit at a good price,the transmission is an annoyance rather than a deal breaker.

I've only had my '02 Explorer Limited for less than 2 months but I love it! I went from a '90 Firebird to this. It's like going from a jonboat to a cruise ship. I decied I wanted a 4WD cause of the Nebraska winters. My family is predominantly GMC but they all like it a lot. My husband keeps trying to get me to swap him his '94 Jeep Grand Cherokee for mine. No way! I just like driving it. I don't care where. Who knows, maybe I'll encounter some probs but for now I like it a lot!

This was my first and last Ford purchase. I went with a newer and more expensive car hoping for better quality for my money, no such luck. I had the car no more than six months when the transmission went, costing me over two grand. Then just last month, not 6 months since the last time the transmission went again! My main regret was buying it right before gas prices went up, for 2 reasons. 1.) this thing is terrible on gas (15/19). 2.) I paid $10,000 and now a year and a half later can be bought here for $6,000. So far the transmission seems to be fine. I also have the false door ajar light and bells. The wheel bearing started making noise (50-65mph) and at $1,200 I'm not going to fix it. The body is good looking and the seats are very comfortable. I also like the 3rd row seats. Would probably sell for a better gas mileage SUV if I wouldn't lose $4,000. Would consider buying one if in great shape for $5,000. Mine has 113,000 miles so far and I've had it a year and a half.

Really regret buying this car. It was my first purchase and I was extremely excited about it and didn't think to ask many important questions. To be a V6 it got really bad gas mileage and maintance is insane. Have had it in the shop for serious repairs like two days after the warranty expired. Ford let my Explorer out of the factory with some strange problems. High beams stay on-can't fix without replacing steering column (don't use high beams, and if I forget and use them I have to disconnect the battery to turn them off). Replaced noisy wheel bearings at 70K. Power window motor on rear driver's side door out at 30K. Door ajar light on and off since 10K (gave up taking it to dealer after three visits). AC/heater floor vents leak. Transaxle seals replaced at 90K. Rear passenger side turn signal out at 100K. Lights work, but turn signal doesn't work. Clear coat started peeling on the passenger side of the vehicle in 2007. I am tired of the nagging little problems..

I have a 2002 Explorer, which I bought in 2001, when the new line first came out. Transmission was bad from the time I took it off the lot, brand new. The dealer could not fix it, and last year 166,000 miles later I put in a new transmission. I also have the "door ajar" light problem, even though the door is closed. The driver's rear wheel bearing broke about three years ago, now the passenger's side broke, too, at 192,000. I guess for the mileage it has it has served me pretty well. But I was expecting to get a lot more from this care for the price I paid ($32,000). I would not buy a Ford car again, that's for sure. I'll go with the German imports.

Passenger window motor went out, cd's get jammed in player. One cylinder (think thats what its called) went out at 55,000. Then appeared a long crack in the hatch rear trim (and no it's not the liftgage that was recalled). Then at 70,000 miles I had to get my transmission rebuilt. My mechanic showed me the parts and told me they were crap. Trying to cut corners and save money I guess. Like Ford wasn't making enough off of $32,000. Then at 78,000 it happened again-and by the way I baby this SUV and do all maintenance as needed. Transmission again but this time my mechanic couldn't find the exact problem in the transmission- had to put a new catalytic converter in among some other parts. Geez

Decent Truck

We bought this truck used with just over 40k on the odo. Now have over 88k and it hasn't been too bad. Biggest problem is the 4x4 low stopped working. I haven't spent the money to get it fixed because I never use low range 4x4. Considering this was a first year redesign, it hasn't been too bad. The power is great. The third row is a nice feature. There is plenty of storage. I bought an 07 SportTrac because I was so happy with this Explorer. That being said, I think we are going to get a Honda Minivan next year because we need more space and the reliability/resale value/gas mileage is so much better. Overall, the 02 Explorer is a great family vehicle, just needs some minor tweaks.

We have enjoyed this vehicle for over three years. It recently has developed electrical problems which include the "Door Ajar" light coming on when no doors are ajar; the anti-theft- alarm going off several times in the day and night for no reason when the car is locked giving us no choice but to leave the car unlocked; power windows randomly not working; and when a brief stretch of loose gravel caused the Control-Trac to go in to 4-Wheel- Drive-High we had trouble getting it to return to two-wheel drive.

This was my second Explorer. The first was a sport model and required a new transmission 250 miles beyond the warranty. The second was this 2002 fully loaded Limited V8 4x4 and I purchased the extended warranty. Around 300 miles short of the warranty expiring I had four valve lifters replaced and then a month later I took it in because the water level began to drop for no apparant reason. Cause: a cracked engine block and the whole engine needed to be replaced for $6K if not on warranty. I have driven Fords ever since I first got my license at age 16. My best car ever was a 1970 Mach I Mustang, but I wil never buy another Explorer. In fairness to Ford, my worst car was a Mercedes.

This vehicle has been nothing but problems for me from day one. I am on the 4th set of hinges for the lift glass, with the first set breaking within a year and being told that I was lucky because it usually breaks the glass. Rear trim piece cracked do to manufacturing flaw and will not be fixed unless I pay. Transmission (XLS) has had problems due to flaw in design and had to have serviced. Luckily, caught problem before I had to replace transmission.

Very nice truck to drive and still love the look of it after 6 years, interior has held up very well. Too bad reliability is so poor. When it's not in the shop it is a great truck.

I have a 2002 Eddie Bauer V8 Explorer, my second Explorer. Previous one was a 1997, and that one was much better. Ford came out with a new Explorer in 2002 that was much larger, more steady, but in my opinion, much more problematic. My transmission was replaced at 95k miles, the radiator was replaced at 90k miles, the car has overheated multiple times and left me stranded on the side of the road, the 6 disc in dash CD player sticks all the time and gets jammed, the transmission still slips, the rear seatbelts flap really loudly when the front windows are down, the driver's window motor has slowed down, the air conditioning is spotty, and the heater takes about 10 minutes to warm.

Have had problems with rear differential leaking since the first week we had it. It was used and past the warranty so we paid to have it repaired. It was leaking again in a month and is still leaking. We live overseas so I searched online for a diagram to match up with the Portuguese part terms to make sure I order the right things. I was shocked at the amount of websites I found with people having the same problem. Also had emergency brake removed last month and saw others with same problem. Radio has issues with CDs sticking and transmission feels like it's slipping. Have not had hatch crack. Squeeking sound from rear over bumps and in front when steering even though maint. is current.

This is a true Piece of Junk. Transmission went just after the warranty expired, 37K miles, cost over $3K to replace. Now it is starting to clunk again. Rear hatch cracked, which amazed me until I started noticing them all around town with the same crack. There is also a leak back there that lets water stream in regardless of the number of times I've had it repaired. Now its the rear wheel bearings that are singing to me so they need to be replaced, which the repair shop told me is a big job (read that expensive). Bought a new one in the early 90s that I drove 200K miles with a lot less repairs. If I could sell this lemon I would but the word is out, it's a PoJ. Need more space...

Not enough space to list my true feelings. Driver and passenger window motors fail. Driver and passenger rear wheel bearings fail about 6 months apart. CD player was the 1st thing to fail. Rear hatch was cracking. I thought that was a first until I came here. Transmission fails as it refused to shift into 3rd gear. Estimated repair cost was $1800-2200. Considered getting it fixed until I visited one of these sites. One person explained my troubles verbatim. He also continued to have problems after the repairs. Made a believer out of me as I traded the EB. I have owned Fords all of my adult life. When I trade my LS(great car by the way) I will never own another Ford. True story.

We bought our Explorer less than a year ago and it's at the Ford dealership again to have the transmission overhauled. Fortunately the first time the dealership paid for the cost of the repairs since it occured within the first 30 days of ownership. This time some of the cost will be picked by the extended warranty company. What happens next year when something else goes wrong with the transmission? I wish I had read the reviews on the 2002 Explorer before I purchased it. I would have thought twice about buying it. Normally I would not have bought a car that was five years old, but it looked so good and drove great. Appearances certainly can be deceiving. I'm afraid to see what's next.

I bought this vehicle because the 1994 Explorer we had was a truly great vehicle, so we gave it to our son and upgraded to the 2002 XLT. Big mistake! This vehicle has been nothing but junk. If you have to make a hard stop, the transmission slips and then the vehicle stalls. We have had this problem since we have had it. Eventually I will get a ticket for not stopping on a yellow light, but I crowd the yellow so the vehicle doesn't die. The back air makes a terrible noise if you turn it on. Now the 4 wheel drive has stopped working. This vehicle only has 60,000 miles and I wish I could scrap it. I understand this model is notorious for transmission problems. Ford should do a recall!

Bought my Explorer with 20K miles on it. This is/was my second Explorer. All vehicles were 4X4. My first Explorer had in excess of 117K miles on it. Both Explorers had the 6cly in it. I towed a travler trailer through the mountains of New England and had plenty of power. I also towed a 22 ft boat. I have not towed with my second explorer. I've driven it from Canada to Fl. forging rivers, hunting, fishing, snow, rain, family vacations, Boy Scouts and have few issues with its performace. 161,000 miles on my current Explorer and it may be time to replace it due to transmission trouble. With that many miles who could complain? Only two questions? Another Explorer or an F150?

I totaled my 2002 Chevy Blazer in December 2006 and that was the best acccident because I found my Explorer. This is car is the best and I couldn't ask for anything more. 193,000 miles so I am not complaining! Second Explorer and the first got this same type of miles - just change your oil regularly. Some problems with the rear hatch - glass struts were recalled. Hatch cracked and was replaced at my cost although every other explorer I've seen out there has this same kind of cracking. Very comfortable car and got decent mileage - 16-18 on average.

Bought this car brand new off the lot with 79 miles on. Now I know why they were trying to get rid of them. First transmission was put in at 24k miles, second transmission put in at 64k miles and it's in the shop again with another transmission problem (second time this year). I'm out around $6000 with transmission costs and rental cars. This is really not worth it, stay away. Because of this problem (and a few minor ones) I will not ever own another Ford again.

I purchased my first SUV after having a neon. Others advised me against buying the first year of a model change. I loved having the SUV for 4wd in snow. However, when your control module does not work, I lost the love quickly. I have had it for 24,000 miles after buying at 61,000. Replaced wheel bearing, EGR sensor, 4WD Control Module, Radio, Front Differential Clutch Pack and shortly a $1200 rear end. Now I need to figure out when the best time would be to ditch this hunk of junk! Reliability and Build Quality is absolutely crap. I cannot sacrifice that for any amount of comfort or beauty. Considering all of these problems are "common" I'd say-Stay away from the Ford EXPLODERRRR!!

I use this truck only for roads trips and as family car. It has a very smooth drive comparing to other SUV's it also has one of the biggest V6 engines of its class the space for passengers and cargo is more than enough aven if you are on the last rear seat. Just to make shorter, great performance, comfortable interior, nice looking desing, built to last, all that you can expect from a Ford truck.

Last month, noise from the front drew me to the dealer. Diagnosis: front AND rear hub bearings worn out, diff pinion and bearings also to be replaced -- total $ 2750. I wish I had read the reviews before...hub bearings issue definitely bearing down on Ford Explorer. If this is such a widely known issue, am not sure why Ford is not replacing it for free -- ...one would think that an SUV would have strong bearings. My second car which I bought this month is definitely not a Ford. Ford has lost its bearings.

I bought my Explorer In June of 2006 with 71,000 miles on it. And now it has 120,000 miles on and it is Sept 2007. I have used and abused this car way beyond what any car should go through. And I have to say it has stood up pretty well, I have taken it on many many road trips. And it has only left my stranded on the side of the road twice, once dude to a dead battery and was in the middle of the Arizona desert and that almost killed but im still alive! And the second time was due to the transmission going out. I've had spent about 4 thousand on repars and up keep, but thats not bad compared to some of the explorer horrior stories. and the other major repair done was the 4WD had 2 all replaced

At 2 months we replaced the CD player which quit, then it was the ignition fell out of the steering column onto the floor, the master control for the power windows on the driver side caught fire, and the transmission and various sensors gone at 46000 miles, very disappointed in the overall reliability of this vehicle rearend and bearing are next and this vehicle though equipped for towing has never towed a thing, all miles are highway with some mountain driving which it did not handle in Rocky Mtns in summer, quit for lean fuel mix.

This vehicle has been one of the best I have ever owned. Unlike what some extremist "greenies" have said about SUV's being gas hogs, this one is not! On longer trips while pulling a small travel trailer, it consistantly got 17MPG and on a couple of tankfuls it got 22MPG !! I would buy another one - no question!

Have put on 35K/year but at a price. First rear tie rods, then transmission, then rear wheel bearing, then front wheel bearing, then rear end, then emergency brake 2 times and now at 174K the rear end needs to be replaced (again) along with the rear springs. This is from the same company that makes the Crown VIC. 200K and going strong. My expecatations were too high for this vechile. When it was brought for major failure the dealership didn't bother to do any diagnostic work. Just replaced it. Now based upon what i have read here. I can see why!

I purchased this vehicle and have had a lot of issues. Pieces of plastic keep falling off the car in different places. The seal around the doors falls off and leaks. I also had problems with both the CD player and the speaker system. Do not buy the extended warranty it is a joke. I was sold an extended warranty on a vehicle that was 5 years old and had over 40,000 miles and was later told that the warranty expired after one year. The dealership told me I was covered up to 100,000 miles, but it was completely untrue. Also, there is a deductible for everything.

Purchased new in 2002. I have 64000 miles and have had the follow problems: rebuilt transmission twice, two power window motors replaced, two cracks on the back panel of the tailgate, airbag sensors not working properly, cruise dontrol stoped working, paint on the plastic panels between the doors coming off, rear end rebuilt. Currently making noise in the rear end going 45 to 55 miles per hour. Sunroof rattles.

I had wanted an Explorer for as long as I could remember. I bought mine when it was 2 years old with 35,000 miles on it. The first weekend I had it one of the handles for the back compartments broke. Within a week, a sensor went out. Was great for two years, and then started hearing weird noises from the back. I've had 3 wheel bearings replaced, additive added to the clutches and now they're saying a spring is cracked, the clutches need to be replaced, and the differential is shot. Total cost for all is around $2,500. This will be my last Ford. I'm moving on to Toyota!

I bought this car in 2003 with 19,000 miles on it. Knock on wood but it has been perfect! No problems with anything. I went to test drive a 2007 Tahoe yesterday and returned feeling like my Explorer was much easier to drive and will not be buying that Tahoe. I have absolutely no allegience to Ford or Chevy or anyone (my wife drives a BMW) but this car has been as trouble-free as my Honda was.

I was very skeptical about owning a Ford due to all the concerns about reliability and depreciation. The newly redesigned Explorer definitely proved me wrong. This vehicle is a very good value for its price. It's not fancy, but very utilitarian (as an SUV should be). The fuel economy is actually not too bad for its size (I got 20.5 hwy and 15 local). Loved all the different compartments in the cargo area. Ride is somewhat truck-like but seats were comfortable and this was our "go to" roadtrip car. Didn't have too many problems with it except for the recall about the hatch (which was noisy over large bumps). Exterior clear gloss paint started fading around the windows after 5 years.

I love driving my SUV but it has been plagued with problems. All were fixed by the dealer under warranty. They gave us an extended warranty to compensate for all the problems. However, the transmission has been slipping for over a year and the dealership cannot duplicate the problem to fix it. I agree with the other posts. If Ford has had so many complaints about the transmission, they should recall it to encourage customer satisfcation and future sales.

I have had my Explorer for a year now. It is very strong with the V8, but the down side is gas mileage. I get about 14mpg around town and about 17.5mpg on the highway. Everything works fine. There is nothing spectacular about my Explorer but it does what it was built to do, haul people. It isn't an offroad machine, but the automatic 4wd is great for Colorado winters. Really the only compaint I have is the flimsy back hatch piece just below the back window. I know many people who have broken that piece when closing the hatch window. I am lucky that mine hasn't broken yet. The 3rd row seat is surprislingly comfortable for short guys like me.

Stay away from the '02 Explorer. It's a repair bill waiting to happen. My last two visits were $1100 a pop, and this after having all of the regularly scheduled maintenance done at Ford dealerships. A major bungle by the engineers. From ball bearings to shattering trim, this things a mess. I wonder if Ford built it on the cheap in order to get business for their service depts. That's where they apparently rake in the dough. I'm done with Ford.

Today is a great day as I finally unloaded my Explorer for a new Lexus. I really liked the look of the Explorer however the parts quality is very suspect. Even though mine only had 50,000 miles the drivetrain acted as if it had 150,000 miles. How Ford could build a vehicle with such poor quality interior parts is beyond me. I guess that's why Toyota is eating their lunch.

I have nothing but praise! Sits 6 easily. I have a daycare and have 4 car seats that I have to load kids in and out of 3 times a day. I wouldn't have a different SUV! I feel very safe driving the kids to and from school in even the worst of our winter storms. Cold outside. Safe, warm and secure inside my Explorer. It also has the safety clips for the 4 car seats which is just another secure advantage for me. It has never let me down in over 3 years that we've owned it.

Loved this vehicle when I first bought it. First sign of trouble after only 3 months - rear pinion seals were shot and leaked. Have had to replace 4WD computer and idler/air valve. Now, with 90,000 on the car & I am told 3 out of 4 wheel bearings have to be replaced. Funny how they all went at the same time. ABS light goes on & off, as does the 'service engine soon' display even though I am told by the dealer that the brakes are fine, and the service light is only a 'dummy' code. Paint is starting to come away in different spots near the roof line. Leather is coming off of the steering wheel and leaving bare spots. I bought this car because of prior reviews, but now wished I hadn't.

Great interior features. I have the dual temperature controls and stereo is excellent. I was pleasantly surprised by the fuel mileage for such a heavy vehicle 5600 pounds(18 mpg combined). Road feel was solid and easy to drive which is a wife factor.

My transmission first stated to delay going in reverse, you know the 3-4 second wait before it engages. Then the transmission would not change into second gear so I took it in to Ford. I was told I needed a new transmission at the cost of $3100.00 and I only had 38,000 miles on it. Ford knows with this many transmission problems with 2002 and up Explorer they should recall them to keep customers happy.

I have always bought Fords, but this Explorer has really turned me off to them. At 67k miles the check engine light came on and within a day, the engine would not shift into 3rd gear. My mechanic has had a lot of 2002/2003 Explorers brought in for the same problem. (I guess Ford decided to try an enclosed transmission for these 2 years and found out it wasn't a good idea). Unfortunately they are not doing a recall because according to them it is not a safety issue. I think driving on the freeway without being able to accelerate over 20 miles an hour would definitely be a risk. So moral of the story is if you want to risk it and buy one, make sure it's got a new transmission. Sorry Ford!

We bought our Explorer second hand 2 years ago and have been very happy so far. No unscheduled service trips. We previously had a 1995 Explorer (for 10 years and only one O2 sensor went wrong) and were looking for the same type of versatility. Huge improvement inside and we went from the 6 cylinder to the V8 for a small increase in fuel cost but much quieter and smoother acceleration.

Went back to dealer. Only wanted to sell me tires and brakes. I have driven it with noise for the past 50K miles. Ford knows they have a problem and they do not care. Wonder why they are in trouble and not selling cars?

I have owned 3 Chevys, 5 Fords, 2 Mercurys, 1 Pontiac, 1 Oldsmobile, 5 Ford pickups, 2 GMC pickups. I drove virtually all until they dropped or were taken by ex-wives. A couple were wrecked. The last was a 1995 Ford Explorer that was ran into by a semi - and drove away although body damage totaled it. This Ford Explorer is the best vehicle I have had, not the newest, just with features (all of them work). Great to drive, reasonable on fuel, powerful performer, room for four easily, good all-around-home vehicle.

This is the first Ford Explorer I have ever owned and have been quite impressed with it. I was surprised at how easily the 4.0 liter engine pulled my boat and utility trailer. The Explorer is also quicker than I had expected. My only complaint (however minor) is the comfort of the front bucket seats on the XLS model. Otherwise, I find the Explorer to be a great value.

Bought it new thinking that with the redesign I was a buying very good and affordable SUV. I was wrong. Had multiple problems with the back door (7 times), multiple problems with the rear air conditioner (4), with the co-pilots window (2) and had to change the transmission with 42k miles on it. It’s too bad that Ford wouldn’t back up this car on all these quality problems.

We bought our '02 Explorer used in '04, thinking that since we were buying from a Ford dealer, we would have Ford standing behind its product. Wrong. The car looks good, but it is a piece of junk. The rear differential has been fixed twice already (at $1000 a pop), and it still has the roaring coming from the rear end that these '02 Explorers have become famous for. Ford really should issue a recall about this. If you do your research, you'll find so many owners with this same problem, and Ford won't fix it. They are simply interested in selling their cars, not having great customer service afterwards. Sorry to say, we're among the legions who have now sworn off Fords forever.

When we purchased our 02' Explorer in '03, we were so happy we found an affordable SUV with plenty of room, power and comfort. Little did we know it was an ABSOLUTE LEMON! Luckily, we purchased the extended warranty that covered the MANY problems we had within the first couple years of ownership. The vehicle now has about 87,000 miles on it and the transmission IS COMPLETELY SHOT! $3,100 later, we are wishing we had spent the extra money and bought a Toyota.

I take pride in maintaining my vehicles. But this has been nothing but trouble. At 45,000 miles, the transmission had to be rebuilt. Earlier, the rear end was replaced. At 50,000 miles, I try to start up and put in reverse to back out of drive. The gearshift broke off. Had to replace at over $1,000. I've had an Explorer before with very satisfactory performance, but this one...nothing but trouble. The dealer has been great. But bottom line, it's still a dud. Oh, by the way, seems I now have some sort of electrical problem. Odometer reading is so dim I can't read it. It comes and goes. How frustrating. I'm just trying to get my money's worth now before I move to Japanese brand.

I thought this would be a great vehicle. Instead, we have had it in the shop at least 10 times. I am on the 4th transmission and it to is going. The back panel has broken numerous times, the dealership has to replace it several times when I take it in because they can't get it on without it cracking. The black paint around the doors is peeling - I was told that isn't covered in the paint warranty that we bought! The ignition had to be replaced twice because it wouldn't turn. We have had to replace numerous other parts on this vehicle. What I had hoped is to have a great vehicle for years - instead I'm stuck with a lemon.

The problems with this 4 door 4wd XLT started exactly 2 months after the warranty expired. First I took it back to the dealer for a recall on the back window. They replaced the rear window and when I went to pick up the vehicle the back window exploded into a million pieces. Since then the rear wiper motor, front wiper motor, driver's power window switch, front brakes, and 4 tires have had to be replaced. All the repairs came out of our pocket. The dealer and Ford's "Customer Support Center" were a joke. I've had Nissans before this and it looks like I'm going back.

We owned several Explorers before the 2002 but this was by far the best handling and with the small V-8 had all the power we needed. The V-8 was less noisy than the high revving V-6 and was not much worse for mileage. The Explorer has plenty of headroom and the interior design is very user friendly.

This vehicle is fun to drive and can accelerate very quickly. It has a 5.0 v8 in it and can tow up to 9,000 lbs. It gets around 18mpg so gas isn't that great in it.
