This truck is not made for a daily driver unless you are toting an army of kids, 10K + for towing, or need cavernous space for stuff. I bought this PSD 7.3 Ex for long trips, carrying 6 adults, one large dog and 10K boat. There is nothing made today that can come close, and do it effortlessly, everytime. In fact, on flat ground as I have described above, I still get 14.5 MPG. Sure there are new vehicles who can match "on paper" what the beast does but can it do it for 500k miles? Expect this PSD to outlive the vehicle, so if you keep it, be prepared to "rebuild" the vehicle a few times during it's lifetime. The Ex performs best with some after market suspension modifications, and a tuner. 7-31-16 update Edmunds ask for me to update my review. I've done a few mods along the way primarily for towing. Fuel cross over and oil cross over... big difference in the smoothness and quiets the ole 7.3 down and eliminates "crackle". Upgraded the exhaust to 4" and added a chip. Underneath... sway bar, RAS, and a plethora of suspension parts. I'd venture about 3K in upgrades, total. Fuel mileage is something I do not spend a lot of time fussing over... however a recent 1800 mile trip (FL to E. TN) towing my car haul trailer loaded @ 7K resulted in 16.3 MPG at 65-70mph. I say WOW! at 75 MPH dropped to 15.1 On the highway @70 MPH 21.3 New double din head unit w/nav puts the '02 truck back in the 21st century... replaced 15 yr old speakers. I have been offered an obscene amount of money for my truck, but until I can get a equal or better replacement ... that ain't happening.

We bought our Excursion to haul our friends and family around in any weather. There is no other vehicle on the market ever made that has the capability of the Ford Excursion. Ours only seats 8 adults, not like our friends Tahoe that seats 6 adults with a couple of kids squeezed between. Then to top it off it can tow 9600 lbs with 1700 lbs of people and gear. Can't do that in any other vehicle. We used to own a '97 Suburban with the 6.5L diesel. Another great vehicle, but nothing compared to the comfort, options and capabilities of the Super Duty Excursion. NO complaints other then Ford ought to make this model again. Our F250 and F350 diesels were great and very reliable, but we needed space

There is not a single thing to complain about. Rides like a car. Holds 8 adults COMFORTABLY, with room for plenty of luggage. 7.3 diesel gets 18 mpg loaded up on the highway for a 9000 lb vehicle. Even has 6 cup holders available for the driver, if you forget to clean it out like I do! If you want something bigger, buy a Mack!

I bought this XLT beast with the V10. Well appointed. I have the need for a big SUV because I have 4 kids and travel often. I have a 2009 SUBURBAN LTZ that I keep for special occasions. The Excursion is my utility work horse. There is no comparison to the ride, Chevy is more car like while the Excursion handles like a truck. I like the extra room the Excursion offers and the power plant is far more responsive then the Chevy. Gas MPG averages 13 while the Chevy averages just over 16. The cabin is a bit more quite with no wind shearing, but city driving can be stiff as a result of the solid axles. The truck is well built and when your on the road its obvious that you're the biggest! RESPECT!

Want to feel safe? want to haul up to 11,000 lbs.? Want heavy duty 4wd? Want upwards of 20mpg hwy? How about heated leather, 3 zone a/c, adjustable pedals, and DVD? Unlimited modification potential? (I'm getting 467 hp/800 tq on mild upgrades). Ford canceled this truck due to high price and limited buyer market. However, now that they are available for much less than $55K, there is no other vehicle like it. The 7.3 diesel is a 500k mile motor, and the only motor to ever go 1,000,000 miles without a rebuild. The frame and suspension are F250 superduty components and are also built for life. Find one under 300k miles that has been maintained and you are getting a quality vehicle.

I love my SUV. I have the Turbo Diesel and I get excellent gas milage. 21 City. When I tow my three horses @ 1200# each plus my 4500# trailer I get less around 15. Still not bad. My kids have plently of room. As my kids are 6'1, 6'2' 5'7'. So I do not know why Edmunds said leg room is bad for taller people. Not so. My truck has lots of pick up and go. When I need to pull out I do and have no problems doing so. I guess if you are a timid driver and think you can not pull out driving this truck then I say don't buy it. As for me...I will keep my Excursion and continue to haul my kids around and my horses to shows etc. It is very comfortable to drive and Its fun to drive.

This SUV with a small investment, as I did, you can produce over 23mpg which is way better that the comparible gas hogs. Fantastic ride and great traction makes it hard to sell mine but the kids are gone. I highly recommend anyone who need a camper puller or a economical kid hauler to seek out this vehicle.

This truck is fantastic. It was used mostly for everyday driving and never had a complaint. When we finally asked it to tow (7000 lbs trailer), it was incredible. We towed through the mountains of West Virgina in July (95F) with the AC on and were able to set the cruise control at 65mph. This is one of the most versatile vehicles ever made.

Have seen bad accidents involving Excursions and they have proven incredably safe. The ride is very good even thought it is built on a F-250 frame and it will pull hard with any size tow load. My diesel has over 130k miles on it and most are towing miles and still have had no problems. I'm also impressed with the body's build quality. The only problem I have had is every year I go to Pensacola, Florida and on a 10 or 12 mile stretch of highway 10 the electronics radio, gauges cut out randomly then return to normal, this has happened in the same spot the last four years, it still runs fine and dosent happen anywhere else but I just thought it was funny.

Been a Ford fan my whole life; this monster of an SUV has never failed me what so ever. For the size it's got good mpg, and it can have plenty of people in them at once. It can tow just about any thing a truck can as well, which is good for me because I love to go camping in a camper and take my boat places.

I LOVE IT! It's comfortable to be in whether a driver or passenger (front, rear or 3rd row) and I'm 6'1"! It's not exactly a smooth ride, but I consider this vehicle a truck, not a luxury SUV. My husband I purchased it for it's function (cargo capacity and towing ability.) We bought this truck/suv knowing fully well that the fuel economy would bite. How could you think otherwise? I'm already brokenhearted knowing that Ford will no longer be making the Excursion.

At 107,000 only repair is rear end. Ford indicates no maintenance required - bad idea. 18 mpg summer, 17 winter at 75 mph. Still on original brakes. Harsh ride made up for by large comfortable seats. Excellent visibility. Upright driver position = no backache making 800 mile day quite doable. There is simply no vehicle in which you can carry as much or pull as much so far so cheaply in safety and comfort. Ford also has best am radios.

I bought this to travel with my newborn twins when they got here. What a great truck. Lots of space for toys and strollers and groceries. Never had a problem in any weather. I like the respect it gets. Known as Godzilla to family and friends. Replaced the front brakes and the exhaust to vented disks and a Banks exhaust. Just the right finishing touches. The gas is a drag to buy but as I said safety first.

This vehicle is too big unless you need to tow something heavy. But the good news is that the diesel gets better gas mileage than any of the V8's in the smaller SUV's. I'm getting 17 around town, and 19-20 on the road when I keep the speed down to 60-65. With the price of fuel going ever higher, the fuel savings may someday cancel out the higher acquisition cost of the big engine. Get Michelin tires. They cut the road noise in half.

Several trips from Lansing, MI, to Portland, ME nonstop, one driver and one tank of diesel (with a tailwind). Visibility and leather driver seat make driving a pleasure. I weigh 240# and get a backache driving luxury sedans in $40-50k range in half the time. Rock solid diesel never misses a tick at 98000 miles (but would not consider gas). Pulls better than my F350 crew long box diesel because it weighs more. Biggest problem is non support attitude of FMC. No satisfaction on missing rear sway bar, 2002 only. If Toyota or Nissan built a diesel SUV, bye-bye Ford.

For simple ability to take a large family and pull a big trailer, the Excursion is hard to beat. The vehicle can comfortably seat 9 big people, offering as much space as a larger van and a lot more besides. I found the power to pull a nearly 10,000 loaded trailer along the Alaska Highway both ways a joy. It offers safety from other vehicles, and we have not had stability problems.

So far reliable. 1 Firestone failure. Pulls a 9000 trailer very well getting 12-13 mpg. Gets 20 mpg+ without trailer with optional diesel. Will travel over 850 miles per 44 gal tank. Noisy outside but economy makes it worth it. Truck based, ride is harsh on bumps. 3.73 rear axle is right.

I really love my Excursion. My only complaint is, based on Edmunds, the value of my 2002 is about $5,000.00 less than I owe (after almost 2 years) AND I GOT 0% INTEREST. That is pretty darn bad. Even the dealership where I bought the Excursion was not going to give me pay-off....then they tried to sale me a 2004. Other than holding it's value this truck is awesome. We take it everywhere. I have three growing boys (teens and pre-teens) and we can all fit in the truck very comfortably. It is the ultimate "large family" vehicle. Plus, Ford makes a great diesel engine.

I bought this car because i was driving a lot in dangerous traffic and wanted to be able to tow my camper. Since then i have taken all sorts of stuff in this car. With the diesel engine it has great pick-up and i get 18mpg average with 20 on the highway. turbo whine gives me that big truck feeling and lots of passing power. The 4wd drive feature is weak especially when you are still supposed to get out to lock the hub for serious off roading

Race car and trailer with tires and fuel weighs in at 10300lbs. and this is the only vehicle that can manage it without going to a F250/350 pickup truck(which I did have prior to the Excursion coming out. Going through Yellowstone Park with 2 baby seats filled and 5 adults plus all the luggage was excellent in this vehicle...we had all the room we needed. I have the PowerStroke Diesel and I assure you it gets 20.3 on the highway and no less than 17.8 on average which is as good as most vehicles on the road. Of course I use Cruise Control to it's maximum. This is my second Excursion(the first being a 2000 model).

WHAT A TRUCK. I will say that it is worth it to go for the diesel engine. not only is the fuel economy great considering the size of the vehicle but the sound is incredible! It gets about the same mileage as my01 Cherokee. get the 4wd. it's handy in the winter and itloods tough. Its amazing in the snow. AMAZING! its more comfortable and easier to drive than expected. Diesel is typically cheaper than gasoline. It is a little tough to park. I'll get over it.small price to pay. If you are thinking about buying one DO IT! You wont regret it the diesel has a standard 100k warranty and everyone tells me that the diesel willrun a half a million miles.

I have had my Excursion for over 2 years and so far no major problems. I wish I had gotten the beeping bumper because I did back into a pole. That option is well worth it. The only other problem I had is that someone broke into the car on the driver's side. Nothing was taken and since I was not out there I am not sure if the alarm went off or not.

I have driven my diesel excursion for 71,000 trouble free miles. Used it from around town to towing, etc. I have towed 11,500 lbs from Sebrign, Fl to NC with the cruise on. My wife even drove!! It has been reliable, inexpensive vehicle to own. A little laborious to use to run to the grocery store, but if you are o the highway, it is a great truck. Pluses. Doesn't hydroplane in the WORST rainstorms, Great power 20+ MPG highway Good brakes for a vehicle of this size Handles ANY tagalong trailer you can throw at it. Good seating position drawbacks: Don't rush to get anywhere or you could get into trouble Probably could handle a little better.

We get 19.3 avg miles on the highway 17.5 in the city after our 5,000 mile break in. Looked at Chevys, Toyota, Lexus & BMW - the diesel is a tried and true engine. I love this car so far! I bought it used with 52,000 miles. It has the 7.3L Turbo Diesel and it seems that it will continue driving strong for a long time to come. I'm 6 feet tall and this is the car I was meant to drive because of it's comfort, reliability and luxuriousness. I won't want a new car for a very long time! Thanks Ford!

I have put 40K miles on it, I pull a 20ft ski boat with 8 passengers and full load. I am seeing 11.4 MPG pulling boat and 15.8 MPG without boat. Ciy driving economy drops to 10 MPG. This truck is very comfortable, easy to drive, very powerful and has a great turning radius. I have driven the Suburban, there is no comparison. Ford has replaced the torque converter for a noise problem and the front hus due to a thunk when turning. I would buy another one...Order rear warning system, it is difficult to see behind you...

I love this SUV! The view is awesome and the interior room is big enough to live in. I can easily transport my family, cats, ferret, and Saint Bernard and still not feel crowded. The V10 has plenty of power for my needs and the mileage is not that bad considering the thing weighs close to 8,000 pounds and is 4WD. I get 11 mpg in town and 15 mpg highway, with the AC running full blast. If you need room and want a little more safety from a large vehice, this one's for you.

I bought this expecting to have all the room in the world. I do! The only thing that takes some getting used to is the stiffer ride than I had in my F- 150. With the V10 I have all the power I want and then some and it gets the same mileage no matter what. Towing or touring it is consistant. Including it's huge range, it is a really good buggy.

Great truck, but it has been in the shop twice for electrical breakdowns. First the accelerator went out, then the alternator and batteries. Thank goodness for warranty service, but what a pain. But, it a a glorious vehicle to drive and tow my toys.

My excursion is terrible. I have had it 4 months and it has been in shop 11 times. I am trying to get it lemon lawed as we speak. The powerstroke is a great motor ans when it wasnt in the shop performed well but it really hasnt been out of the shop much. Buy the ESV instead. Ford SUCKS!

This is the best vehicle I have evr owned. Buy one, you will love it. I get 18 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway. I have the powerstroke so their is huge power on tap. My 8000 lb trailer and 5 adults does not even phase this vehicle's power in the Monutains on Colorado. I have 50,000 on my 2002 and everything works the same as the day I bought it. In a family of 10 truck / SUV owners, I was the only vehicle that did not get stuck in our last snow storm in Colorado. We got 3 feet of snow and the Excursion went through it like a hot knife through butter. I drove the whole family around to get what they needed in the storm. I love this thing!

I thought I would have to really sell my wife on this huge truck. We looked at everything on the market and brought half of it home for overnight evaluations.tried the v10 ended up with the power stroke diesel! we wanted lots of room for traveling and wanted something safe for the kids.Bought the LTD with every option

I have the V-10 powerplant. Very good engine which has all the power you would ever need. The ride is stiff around town due to the F-250 heavy duty frame the Excursion sits on. However, the highway is where this truck really shines. It is very smooth and stable with little wind noise. I modified the engine with a Flowmaster dual exhaust and high flow air filter which improved fuel economy dramatically. Fuel mileage increased from 11c/14h to 13c/16h, which is as good as the Suburban but with more pulling power.

This car is great and can hold up to 8 adults or 9 (kids) very comfortably. In fact one friend, while riding in the very back row said he felt like he was in another time zone or zip code. Only thing that new attention is the fan for the rear seats. Dials and controls are there but it is really controlled by the front seat controls. A little misleading.

Bought this behemoth becuase at the time it was the rage. Now I wonder what drug I was using at that time.Gas milage is a term we do not use,and the interior has pieces falling apart constantly.Only 54,000 miles and already had in shop twice for intake gasket and fuel pump(V-10).Poor excuse for a large SUV.If you insist on Ford, than get the diesel engine.Otherwise get a Chevy or GMC like I did 2 months ago.By the way, don't be surprised if you get laughed at when you tell the dealer you thought it "was worth more than that" on trade.Be prepared to take a beating on trade in value!!I am trying to sell mine private, and have had 0 calls on it.I wonder why?!@#.

We recently bought this Big E after many months of contemplation.(We also looked at the Sequoia and the Expedition, but there was no comparison!) After several test drives all over the state, we took the plunge. Now that we own it, we take it everywhere! Other Big E owners wave as we go by, not to mention the respect you get on the road!. Fuel mileage is incredible...16 city and 20 hwy going 65mpg (with hills). The sound of the diesel motor, inside the cabin, under normal driving conditions, is minimal. I would buy this vehicle again, and again, and again!

We needed the third row seat and storage space behind it for the baby, dog, and all the gear that goes with them. Drove everything else including the Suburban. Came down to size and options. Love the ride and performance. Drove a Dodge Ram before this and its just as easy to park. If you dont like trucks, get a minivan. This is the XXL SUV. Love it.

What a stud pulling machine. I had the chev sub for years and killed it with my toys. Then the tahoe and did the same. I really use these vehicles and pull toys all over, state to state. This powerstroke is one hell of a motor and great mpg too. It kills the sub. I'm getting 12 to 14 city and 19 ish hwy. wow smokes the chev's. I had it custom lifted 4" and placed 315's on it. Good Bilstein shock, but nothing to crazy. Wow it handles great and smooth. No dives in the cornes and can run over a house. If you really use your vehicles and want pulling power and long lasting features, get the powerstroke excursion.

THIS SUV IS THE GREATEST GAS GUZZLER I HAVE EVER SEEN. 7.6L ENGINE WILL SPIT YOUR GAS OUT IN AN INSTANT! I AGREE IT'S SPACIOUS, BUT THE RELIABILITY IS VERY LOW JUDGING THAT AFTER 2-3 YEARS OF USE, THE VALUE OF IS GOING TO DROP LOWWWW. STICK WITH A SEQUOIA AND TRUST TOYOTA'S ENGINE....AND AFTER ALL...IT'S A FORD!!!! IT'LL BREAK APART SO FAST YOU WOULDN'T KNOW WHAT HIT YOU. I'M NO FORD HATER BUT USING REAL EVIDENCE OF FORD'S RELIABILITY, I CAN SAY THAT IT IS VERY POOR.

The Beast is a pleasure to drive. Its a vehicle that demands respect everywhere you go. Other cars move out of the way especially on the highway. I bought the Beast to carry my four kids in. I took a drive to Disneyland as well as Mexico, and it gave me an average of 15 miles a gallon at speeds of 80-85. I bought the 7.3 Liter diesel. No smogging to do and I've been told the engines last a long time.

Added the Limited Premier Group in Mineral Grey. 2-Tone leather seats w Cherrywood grain - fantastic. . Really like the reversible cargo mat in the rear cargo area. Surprised to be getting avg of 19mpg - about 18 in city. . Used to own Suburban's, but no more.
