NEVER again will I buy a ford. This car is full of wonderful surprises , one day a spark plug flies out , another day the breaks give out and you almost die. basically if you're looking for a car you could possibly die in unexpectedly, this is the one!!!!

Know that its not supposed to be a luxury vehicle or a sports car. Its a sturdy solidly built vehicle that is very reliable. My particular model is equipped with a v6. Its not going to get the best fuel economy in the world. Drive conservatively and you can easily go a while without getting gas. It makes a good first car for a teenager. If you take care of it, it will take care of you. Since I've owned it, I've put almost 10k miles on it. It's had oil changes routinely. It had one coil pack go bad so I went ahead and replaced all 6 coils and spark plugs which wasn't cheap, but I feel its saved me in the long run. It handles pretty good on the road. It's no sports car but its not going to slip out all the time either. The 4x4 is decent. It doesn't have low range which is somewhat of a bummer but it makes sense seeing as most people will be driving this on the highway. But its nice to know that if you live in a snowy place or out in the woods you have 4x4 available. It's very spacious inside. Plenty of room even for 5 people. Overall I'd say this is one badass SUV. As long as you take care of it, its going to take care of you too.

Buy this and your repair shop will know you by name!

I will start with the positives. It really is a fun car to drive, when it is not in the shop. The negatives, it is always in the shop. I bought this car two years ago and from day two it has had problems. It was first something in the 4x4 that was leaking that was a $400 fix. Then came the first oil leak (yes I have had three!) that was another $150 to repair. After that it was something in my front axle that was causing my car to pull like it was out of alignment. New front axle and $600 I though the car was good to go again. After that it was my break line that broke, it left me break-less in a ND winter. And many more! In short don't buy this car! It is yellow, like the lemon it is.

Purchased my Escape used w/80K miles on it. Three years later w/150K I'm now having BIG problems. Before it hit 130K the car was great! No problems, fun to drive, but now having big problems with E-Vap codes, check engine light always on, fuel hoses replaced, plugs/wires/coils burnt out, back seat release broke, falling apart all at once, cruise control won't work, CD player died, interior falling apart. Mileage horrible, no where near projected, getting 17-19mpg at best. Drivers seat wearing out, no cush left, but lumbar adjust ok. Have always had problems w/cargo door staying locked for days on end, the pits when groceries loaded & you gotta unload over back of seat.

4 cyl 5 spd model @ 80k now: Bought used with 38k on it. I'm very meticulous about car issues and I have noticed only a couple things that have needed attention over the years. In my mind these issues are less about Ford and more about components manufactured in Asia (I'd bet). 1. Idle Air Control Valve needs some cleaning/replacement after 75k miles or so and is a total pain to get to. 2. DPEF sensor craps out about the same time. Neither one ever left me stranded or were $$$ but did create an erratic idle at times. Outside of that, absolutely nothing has gone wrong. Engine has adequate power and has returned 25 mpg avg, consistently. Handling and braking even w/o all discs is good.

Bought my Escape new in sept of 02. previously owned a 95 escort wagon (5 speed) with over 200,000 miles on it. just wanted a 4x4 for my commute in the snow. Wow! great little car in snow. handles well. Too bad it now has over 250,000 miles on it. looking for another manual Ford transmission. They seem to never give up. 4 cylinder engines lacks power, but didn't buy it for that. Only had oil changes and fluid changes. Totally recommend Fords. Just test drove a '97 toyota Avalon, not impressed. STICK WITH AMERICAN

I bought this car when it had 114k mi. Black on Black. I had it for a year. the car was absolutely awesome. It had great pickup, good break system and great handling. I never took the car to mechanic for any reason. The only reason that I sold it was ,because I was trying to upgrade it but now I regret it. I changed 2 cars after that but I'm still not happy with what I have. I recommend this car 100%. If you can get the limited, because than the car would have all the options you would need, and there isn't so much difference in the price. the only good upgrade from this car is nissan murano or BMW X3, don't waist you time with other SUVs

First of all I bought this Ford new. I have 50,000 miles on it. The repairs I've made, other than routine maintenance, are. Fuel pump and a tie rod end and that's it ( knock on wood). Power from this 200hp V-6 is more than ample and it's good to know you have that extra power when needed. The ride is a bit stiff but that is to be expected from an SUV. The seats are very comfortable so that makes the stiff ride more bearable. Very roomy. Highway road noise is above average. If your looking to improve on that a good set of passenger tire would help. A/T tires are not the way to go unless your looking for more traction. Fuel-ok at 20 mpg combined city/hwy for a V-6. Nice SUV.

One of my best!

I drive a lot and have had many cars, trucks, SUVs but my 2002 Ford Escape was by far one of the best vehicles, that I have ever owned! The "ease", of entry/exit, is awesome, for me, and the performance vs mpg is a "perfect combination" I have owned over a hundred vehicles, mostly used, but 37 new, mostly Ford,GM, and this one stands out! Bravo to Ford for such a nice ride, just wish that they had left the spare INSIDE, where it belongs, and continued offering the column shift, for those of us, that are cramped by consoles. The redesigned 2008 and up are much more refined however!! Definitely worth a look!

Had it since 2002. Yes, I've had some major repairs. The engine went at 96K miles, so it cost us $7k to fix that. It cost me $4k to fix all 3 converters, and yes I had to pay to fix 3 of six coils. They said driving of fast accelerating and sudden stops could contributed to it, and we also drove it in England for 3 years, so that didn't help either. But it's always been there for us through the worse of times. Blizzards are no problem for me. I have better traction than most newer SUV's and trucks, including your MB's and Lexus. It does make squeaky sounds in the interior, but it's older. Not much you can do. With all the accidents, it's always gotten lesser damage and held up the most!

This is really great SUV. My mom has 2002 Ford Escape that already has over 273,000 miles. Her friend drove a lot for work and vacation. Then she brought it from her friend because they got new car. We take a good care of this vehicle and thanks god its working very good. We rode/drove it A LOT. Ford Escape goes very well on winter, I remember we made it on the hill with 2WD which is awesome. This SUV is better gas than Jeep and Chevy blazer. Her vehicle is a little bit bad shape now but as long its run like reliable and we're keeping until the car break down but this SUV never die.

After purchasing my truck I had costly repairs the very first year. Over the next 3yrs the truck had been great until last friday Nov 13th, when my truck had an electrical fire! Please be careful Escape owners, the truck was off and I was not inside when it caught fire. Never again will I own another Ford vehicle due to Ford not taking onwership of the problems with their vehicles.

Purchased new and it ran great, then things started to happen. 10K - Lose molding on the roof. Rear wiper does not touch the window. 40K - 6-disc player stopped working. 50k - 3 coils out of 6 had to be replaced. Windows started squeaking when opening and closing. 65k - Replaced oil pan gasket due to leak, and then two month later the oil pan due to stripped plug. 70k Replaced all three catalytic converters (they were plugged up). 70k - Replaced leaky water pump. Replaced cracked alternator. I give up...

I bought this 4 yrs ago, used. So far I have had to fix the AC/heater 3 times, fix the parking brake twice (soon to be 3 times as it's going out again) and replace both the transmission and the CD player. And now there's an electric problem that is causing my emergency brake light and emissions system warning lights to come on for no reason, as well as causing failures in my CD player, dashboard lights, and gas gauge.

The transmission died at 54k , replacement cost: 3k, The alternator died at 72k replacement cost: $600. The fifth door does not open on hot days. Either I bought a lemon or it's just a typical American built car, and that's all it is, mainly because it has the same transmission as the ford contour (why would ford use a car transmission in a 200hp SUV?). It looks great though, Just engineered stupidly. I trust my 1995 Toyota pick-up more than this piece of junk. Now, on the bright side, it truly is a nice ride and the interior, sound system and all the rest is great. [just beware it will break down on you].

Bought the car used with 13,000 miles. It gets 17mpg city, 20 mixed and 24 highway. I hope to drive it to 200,000 miles if the NY winters don't get to body/hardware first. It still drives/shifts as smooth as the day I picked it up back in '03. REPAIRS: I have had to replace the rear wiper motor at 60K, both front end tie rods at 70K and drivers side wheel bearing at 72K. Overall, no complaints though. Its a very reliable, fun car to drive and strongly recommend it for those looking for an subcompact SUV

I first saw the Escape when it first arrived on the scene. I told my husband then that I wanted that car when I was ready to get another car. In 2002 I bought my first Escape. I have never had a sorry day. I love this car. It has 105000 miles on it now and it's never been in the shop for more than the usual oil changes. I am older and therefore have a problem climbing out of most cars. With my Escape I can climb up and hop down. That is the main reason I wanted a small SUV. I also have a horse so this great car can carry all my horse equipment with no problem. I think American cars get a bum rap. I get 21 miles to the gallon highway (I drive 30 miles to work each way). luv it

I bought a fully loaded all Black XLT as my daughter's first car. The car had 60K miles, and had one owner who obviously took good care of it. My daughter loves her first car and I feel secure that she has some size around her. While the gas mileage isn't great it is far from awful (about 18mpg). We haven't had any issues with the car. Bottom line, no complaints from either of us.

I bought this vehicle about a year ago as my first car after much thought, and I must say I made the right choice. I chose it for gas mileage and looks, and was able to get a great deal off craigslist. The required maintenence was pricy ($1000 for a new timing belt), but expected. The vehicle is spacious inside, while being able to fit in almost any parking spot and turning around in places other cars can't. The standard transmission is the way to go given the 4 cyl's engine power.

All I have to say is wow! Ford hit it pretty good with a cheap 4x4 to get around in the winters and summer in Canada. I have to say that the only real problems I've had is changing a motor under warranty. Other then that my Escape has treated me well. Off road in this and you'll be very surprised. I've had the chance to go with Jeeps and such with no problems geting through the muck. Ford has put metal parts on this "truck" where you would see plastic, ie; end links. Very strong SUV. Fuel economy is something to get used to but then what would you expect to get in a near 4000 pound vehicle? Tows great. Transmission is good. I plan to enjoy this "truck" for another few years yet.

I bought my Escape new. I've had it 7 1/2 years & 75,000 miles+. The acceleration isn't too great. Handles well in snow and bad conditions. The last year or so, it's needed a lot of repairs. The struts have been changed and it still has suspension issues (rattles). Recently both the clutch and the clutch master cylinder went out at the same time. A very costly repair (At 72, 000 miles). Two teenagers did learn to drive on it. But I expected it to go longer before needing costly repairs. It has been reliable getting me where I need to go. Doesn't like steep hills too much. And CIncinnati has those. I don't think I'd buy another one though. Too many repairs needed too soon.

I love driving my Escape. I am short and can see out of it better than anything I've driven before. The electrical problems are driving me crazy. After many visits to the dealer, they finally found that caulk had come loose and I had a gallon of water on my fuse box. Supposedly resealed and replaced the fuse box. Two months later I had it back in for the same problems, radio going off and on by itself, even when car is off, horn going off, trouble lights on for no reason. Said they can't find any problems and gave it back to me unfixed. Have contacted Ford and they won't do anything to help, so am buying a Honda on Monday. I'm sorry to say that Ford has lost another customer.

I bought my Escape new and drove it for six plus years. I wanted some of the conveniences (space, height and 4wd) of driving an SUV but was not willing to pay where the next size was priced, did not want horrendous MPG and back in 2002 most large SUV’s still felt like driving a pickup truck. I got what I paid for it was a no thrills solid performer. The car was only in the shop twice for two minor recalls and the well known air sensor. I had the cd changer issue and the moon roof switch that was a pain but I did not ever get annoyed when it happened. It was a great drive as acceleration was excellent and the handling and feel of the SUV felt like I was driving a car.

I have owned this vehicle for 7 and a half years and have never had a problem with it. I have done all the regularly scheduled maintainance and the car now has 140,000 miles on it and still runs like we first bought it. We have towed trailers, hauled lumber and taken it on some fairly easy trails (it is not 4WD) and it has always performed admirably. It even survived a rear-ending on the interstate and the subsequent $7,500 worth of damage. The only thing I would change about it is better fuel economy (22 city, 25 interstate), and that isn't even too bad for a SUV. I highly recommend this vehicle and it has been a pleasure to own and drive.

I bought mine used with 71,000 miles on it. It being a small SUV I didn't really think it would do very well off road even though it had the 4wd. I was extremely suprised on just how well this thing can off-road! I have put it in some pretty hairy places and it just pulled on through without even second guessing it. It handles quite well on the road. I drive 75 miles a day for work in this thing, and I love every minute of it.

In the last four months it is starting to cost me money. I have had to replace the tire rod in the front, and now I need to replace the cv-joint so the anti-lock brakes will work. The first thing that impressed us with the Escape was the interior space. Driver and front passenger have lots of leg and head room. Like the way the rear seat cushions can be removed and also like the height of the cargo area. Ours has the No Boundaries Roof Rack which has been great for hauling bikes.

This is a good car for the most part, I think there are some design flaws that make this vehicle a "high maintenance" vehicle once the warranty is up. Have 128,000 miles in 4+ years. No problems. Never back to dealer for any repairs or problems. Avg. 21-24 mpg. Still solid. Spent 4 years on construction sites with no ill effects. Used as primary family vehicle. Daughter hit a deer on spring break with it; vehicle was A-OK, but deer wasn't. Still handles well and is quick. No complaints about CDs sticking or gear shift lever blocking access to anything. Large number cubbyholes are useful. Compared it to RAV4, CR-V and VUE. Escape was by far the best value and fun/comfortable drive. Wife, daughter and son all like it.

I travel 50 plus miles a day in my Ford Escape. I find that it handles very well in very wet roads and in the winter I feel very secure in the manner in which it "hugs" the road, especially on curves. My V6 engine has great pick-up speed and right now I am averaging 28mpg. Since I am the main driver of this vehicle I have had very few opportunities to be a passenger, but I do remember driving to North Dakota from Iowa. I had the back seat. I found that being a passenger in the back seat was not the most joyful experience. There wasn't enough room for ones "tush." I had the feeling that I was always sliding down. I would definitely buy another ford Escape.

Great car overall!

I have owned my Escape since May 2002 and overall it has been a wonderful car for me. It is very fun to drive and really moves quick and easy. The only big problem I had was when the transmission went out at under 10,000 miles. Major upset for me! It was fixed under warranty but for a long time I was still pretty annoyed. Based on some of the other comments apparently this is a problem with the Escape. Otherwise I am very happy with my SUV.

Bought the car without doing much research. It is fun to drive, has great acceleration, and is very good in snow. Has lots of storage, and is very comfortable for long drives. The ride is much better than the Explorer I owned prior to buying this car. I have had absolutely zero problems with the car.

Have 85K miles with no significant anomalies. Yeah, the usual CD sticking, wait till it cools down or use a credit card and it'll come out fine. Still virtually all original parts including tires with decent tread still if you can believe that. This has been used off road a fair bit in serious snow and dirt, along with dogs/skis/bikes/canoes/kayaks/kids/lumber/rocks/bricks/etc. Have changed the tranny fluid every 40K or so and tranny is fine. Great vehicle so far. Good job Ford.

I love to drive my new (used) Escape. It is sporty, sexy & fast! It fits into tight spots yet plenty of room for my 6'4" hubby. I went from a Lexus to my Escape and I just think it was the best choice for us since we spend 1/2 our year in the mountain snow and the other in the city. I chose this over a Lexus LX470 after reading many reports online, I chose to buy this and very happy I did.

This was the best performing vehicle that I have EVER owned; too bad it had to go into the shop for work over 12 times in one year (20,000 miles). Rotors, fuel lines, EGR valve, fuel tank gaskets, etc. I did get 30 mpg with it and with it fully loaded (floor to ceiling with slip 40/60 seats) set the cruise at 72 and never have it drop below 70, even then going through the Rocky Mountains.

Found out that others are having the same problem with their Ford Escapes via internet research. Buyer beware - transmission very poor.

I have owned my Escape for over two years and never had a problem. The engine is very responsive and doesn't do a bad job of pulling 2 Jet-Skis. The Escape is surprisingly sure footed in winter conditions for its size. The Mach sound system is great. I have been very happy with the car.

The car locks should automatically lock when the vehicle is put into drive. There should be rear air conditioning for the back seat. The passenger seat should be automatic when needing to move back and forth. There have been two recalls to this vehicle. To spend $25,000+ you should get a car that has no recalls! Ford should compensate their customers on their recalls, especially when you spend that amount of money. Maybe replace the vehicles with a newer one or one with no imperfections.

My Ford Escape is self-destructing as I write - the CD player won't eject without help from my license, the rear wiper doesn't work, the right inside door panel is coming off, the shift indicator light works once in a while, the alternator had to be replaced at 24K, the right rear door doesn't shut without being slammed (this was supposedly fixed by the dealer), the doors are hard to open - feels like the door handle is going to break off (probably will soon), the left running board is separating from itself and it's difficult to shift out of park when parked on a hill. The defrost only works with the visors down, the a/c is inadequate. Could go on and on, but am out of room.

This SUV is a piece of junk.

This vehicle is junk. The rear door seal fell off. The CD player refuses to give back CD's. The rear wiper motor quit. The sun roof sticks. It has been recalled twice. And now the transmission has totally failed at 61,000 miles. Ford refuses to acknowledge that there is a problem but checking the NHTSA site reveals I am not the only one with this problem. I would not recommend this vehicle to anyone.

Our '02 Escape has been pretty good to us. We have had to bring it in for service multiple times on some recurring problems/nuisances that didn't affect the way the car handles (loose air bag light wires, driver visor mirror, jammed CD changer). Overall this SUV is perfect for our family of 4 (2 adults, two young boys). In hindsight, should have bought leather seats since the cloth gets too dirty with the kids. Plenty of cargo room for large stroller, luggage, etc. V6 engine is a must. V4 (tested, not purchased) was way weak.

This is quit possibly the worst truck I've ever driven. The brakes are horrible. We had to replace the rotors at 32,000 miles. It handles like a barn on wheels. The CD changer went out and had to be replaced. The driver's window makes a horrible screaching sound going up and down. There are so many noises the dealership couldnt even figure it out for 3 months! The transaxle damper went out and it took Ford 4 months to get a part. Road noise is terrible and it eats tires. But it's cute! I hate to say it but Ford could learn something from our foreign compitors. Oh yah DON'T buy one!

I was a fan of this vehicle until the engine self-destructed at 47,000 miles, by throwing a rod and tearing apart the engine. And this after buying it new and changing the oil every 3,000 miles, like clockwork. When I pay over $20k for a new car, I expect over 50,000 miles and 3 years out of the car.

Ok, it's a great little SUV. Quick and peppy. But I am putting my $1500 extended warranty to use! In the last year I have replaced the master cylinder, the torque converter, the oil oan and gasket, a burned up exhaust valve, front brakes and rotors (twice!) and have it in now to replace the timing belt cover. It is dripping oil on the exhaust manifold and I am afraid I will be roadside BBQ soon. My warranty company has shelled about $5000 on the fixes so far!

I have a certified used auto with 31,000 miles. It has been reliable, handles well in a variety of road conditions, and a peppy V-6 engine. I had 3 minor problems covered free under the warrantee: Recall for engine stall. I never experienced this. The 6 CD player stopped working. The stuck discs were recovered and return. Inside AC/heat fan was noisy. No problem with Dealer

My wife and I purchased a 2002 XLT Escape with leather seats in July of 02. We liked the body style of the vehicle and read all of the consumer reports on the vehicle; SUV of the Year, etc... This vehicle has to be the worst riding vehicle I have ever been in. The seats are very uncomfortable on long distance trips. Road noise is awful. Interior trim is cheaply designed. Fit and finish leaves a lot to be desired. Finally traded it this past weekend; OH HAPPY DAY!!!! At it's price, I honestly can not recommend this vehicle to anyone.

Well, the first thing was the battery it went within a month would not hold water, had to wait until they got another from Mexico? And when installed they left it filthy. Second was the drivers window, when lowered was rubbing on panel had to be replaced. Third, a recal for staling at 40 or over MPH we inquired and were told it was not a 2002 problem as with the 2000's and 2001's. And the most scary the bearings were going out on the front wheels. We noticed on right turns around bends going over 40 a noise, thank someone above we did not let it go. We swore no more American Cars and now are back to that.

From that point on anytime we were driving for more than 30 minutes the car would act as if it was overheating. The dealership couldn't fix nor could for. At 28000 miles Ford finally bought the car back from us a full value. This car has major potential electrical problems. Buyer Beware!!!!

Brakes have been replaced 3 times and rotors twice less than 65000 miles on the vehicle back breaks are continuous coming out of allignment. Alternator went out with under 65000 miles on it. I traded in a 97 Jeep Wrangler for this pile of cheap junk. Not even 11,000 miles and this car needs new tires badly. Everything is plastic and fiberglass. Gear shift position is downright dangerous if you're reaching for the radio. WORST is the 4-wheel drive which really doesn't exist. I can't wait to unload this mediocre dangerous vehicle. Don't forget the recall that just came out. Ford dealer doesn't have evening or weekend service hours.

First time I took off the G's pulled my head back with barely a foot on the accelerator. I also was pleasently surprised with the sound system. It is the "Audiophile." It can really take off, the power is great. Only problems have been the stock tires, which we just replaced, and a repair needed on the throttle control. This was my first truely "American" purchase (my previous car was a '00 Honda CRV), and other than a warranty- covered fuel sensor issue which caused the truck to stall at 40 mph, it has been a reliable, well-crafted, compact SUV. It has more than enough power and it's fairly comfortable for my 6'4" frame. The 16-17 city-MPG took a little getting used to, but the '05 Hybrid is right around the corner!

I love the way my Escape drives and looks. I wish it didn't have so many little problems. This is my first time owning a Ford, I don't think I will be buying another one. I have had a problem with the check engine light coming on, fixed at dealer. A/C control knob broke, A/C is not very cold, having that checked in a couple of days, clunking sound coming from brakes when stopping. For a vehicle only 1 yr. old I didn't expect all these problems. My Toyota's always lasted 200,000 miles with very few problems, mostly towards the end. I just hope my ESCAPE makes it without bankruping us.

My Escape has been a great purchase for my rural area. Goes great in the snow. A few minor problems, bad alternator, bad CD player & windshield makes a clogged draining sound after a rain. The popping sound in the front wheel was the rocker arm and ball joint. Its all been replaced under warranty and she drive like new again.

I have had my Escape for a little over a year now and there have been a few bumps in the road, but they have been fixed as quickly as possible. 4 months after I bought my car, the clutch Master Cylinder had to be replaced (that took 10 days), then 2 months later it was in the shop because it was leaking differential fluid, the dealership fixed that within a day. But then in June, 7 months later it was back in with problems with the differential and it turns out that had to be replaced too. Other than that no problems, and I love this vehicle besides.

I bought brand new and have had to replace the engine, the steering column (twice) the door locks, repair the air conditioner, power outlets. The chip has been reprogrammed too many times to count....... and it still has problems. This thing is a death trap.

The car is a ton of fun to drive; the 5-speed makes it hard to believe that you are driving an economical 4-cylinder. It rides smooth and handles like a car. You can park anywhere, and there is more room inside(for both people and cargo) than you would think. Gas milage has been higher than expected as well. A year and a half after purchase, I am very satisfied.

I have had this car for almost a year and a half. I have had it in the shop for probably 20-30 days for all sorts of problems. It cut off on me while I was driving down the road .. a problem that has been experienced by at least two others I know with their own Escapes. My 6-CD changer had to be replaced. The runners/steps had to be replaced b/c the vibrate so loud it disrupts the ride .. altho the new ones still vibrate .. obviously a defect in construction. Not sure why, but I had to have my brake oil reservoir repaired due to leakage. Those are the things I can think of off the top of my head!

The Ford Escape could be a very good vehicle IF Ford had worried about some quality control. Problems:the drivers' side mirror vibrates so badly that it has been fixed 4 times, to no avail, the CD changer ate six of my discs, a constant droan from the transmission, the dashboad controls have cracked, numerous rattles and squeeks, the left door window came off track, engine stalled. Also of note is that Fords customer service through dealers is horrible. Everytime I have taken the Escape in for a repair the mechanics have broken something else. I don't receive this poor of service from my other cars manufacturers, BMW and Nissan, respectively.

I cant wait to trade this in and get rid of it for a Honda Accord. I purchased this in July. The interior is just plain cheap. If you are looking for luxury forget it here. The seats are so cheap I feel like my back is killing me when I get to my destination. I dont feel safe with my child in the back. The back doors seem to be really thin. I have had this stall several times on me. I just dont feel safe in this car it doesnt seem hefty and it is so cheap! The only good thing about it is the basic size and the CD player. Good gas milage but I would trade that for a little more heft in the doors that are feather light.

After shopping for 3 months and reviewing all of the SUV's in this class, I decided that relaibility, power, and affordability was the route to go. The Escape is not as fancy as the Tribute( same exact Mazda engine) or the CR-V, or the Santa Fe but for the money it's the best in it's class. I think Ford's only shortcoming with the Escape was they should have spent a little more money with the build quality and intierior- I personally would have paid for it. Overall I would suggest this SUV to anyone in the market- the 6cyl. 3.0 201hp- 4 dr.

I love this vehicle. It's fun to drive and it's great looking. Ford, though, really skimped on some features, especially interior lighting. For example, there is no light for the ignition keyhole and many of the operating controls are painted on in white with no backlighting for dark roads. A compass and outside temp gauage would have been nice as well as a little less plastic inside.

Powerful, sporty, and fun to drive. Perfect size for our small family plus groceries and dogs. We absolutely love the car. One caution: we originally had a 2001 model which we also loved but had a problem which would cause the engine to stall when decelerating at about 40mph which Ford could not fix at the time (see NHTSA web site for info). After four attempts to fix, Ford respected the California Lemon Law and replaced our 2001 (with over 25,000 miles on it) with an identical 2002 model for only $800. The new one is working perfectly so far with 4,000 miles on it.

I have a 2002 XLT Ford Escape with 8,000 miles. Today I was driving home from work and the engine, and battery lights came on. The power steering went out and the brakes barely worked. When I finally got the car to stop it died. Luckily I put it into park and it re- started. I am scared to think of what would have happened only 5 minutes earlier when I was on the freeway. I read a lot of bad reviews about the Escape and it's stalling problems. I thought maybe it wouldn't happen to me, but it did. I am afraid to take it into the shop and have to hear them tell me that nothing is wrong. This is a real shame.

So far, I have been very pleased with the decision.

Read the consumer complaints section on NHTSA.gov, for some important info on this car. You will find 106 others like me who own this car and have multiple experiences with stalling headed down hill or on the freeway. We loose steering and most of our breaking. It's like someone cut the lines. It's frightening. Don't be snookered by crash tests and packaging. 'Cause you don't want to know what that crash feels like! The car also surges a lot like you have the cruise control on.

Neighbour bought same vehicle same problem. Replaced jammed seat carriage. Hgh spd vibration in front end. Rebushed something and balance tires(Pour PDI) Plastic kick plate mouldings were replaced (needs mud flaps from factory) CD player jammed, deck replaced. Very poor quality job done by Ford. Dealer did rebate some cash and provide adaquate service each and every time this vehicle was in the shop (way too much shop time) Needs new engine coolant level sensor...on and on. Gas milage poor.

I've only been driving this vehicle for 30 days, so keep that in mind while reading. Overall, I am very happy with this SUV. Great acceleration with the V6. I test drove a Honda CRV and I thought the engine was going to burst while I was trying to merge onto a highway. No thanks. The Escape looks good, handles better than most cars I've driven, and has plenty of interior room for being a "mini" SUV. There are only a few minor things I think should be improved, but if I could only pick 1 it would be the seats. They need to be a bit more contoured and supportive.

It is extremely cheap, uncomforatable, and noisy. (see suggestions below). This is a highly cost-engineered vehicle that is a latent entry designed to compete with the highly-successful Honda CR-V. In looking around, I've discovered the Escape re-sale value is weak, and I would probably go with the Hyundai Santa Fe if I were to buy another mini-SUV.

I had been researching, shopping and test driving for about three months to repalce a leased saturn. I drove everything from an Acura RSX to an VW Passat. Three weeks ago I was shamed into visiting a Ford dealer by my Brother-in-law who makes a living building the Explorer. I drove the escape and much to my suprise it was almost everything I was looking for. With 200hp it preformed very well It has more than enough room in the back seat for even my 6'3" frame (my sons will all be at least my size in the very near future). and it has an impressive supply of after-market accessories to make it stand out in a crowd.

This vehicle is great. Except that the A/C is horrible. Ford needs to something about their air-conditioning in the Escape. Also, the seats are not comfortabl at all. I wonder if Ford realizes that?

After driving several small SUV's and trying to find the best overall value, we decided on the Ford Escape. Our last Ford SUV, which was a Bronco II, was 14 years old, and still running great. However, we needed 4 doors instead of 2 for our family and the Escape filled the bill. We checked out all of the usual sources, and everyone gave it glowing reviews, except for Consumer Reports which favors Japaneese automakers in general. The Escape has as much interior room as the Ford Explorer Sport 2 door and has more space than the Toyota Rav4 and others. We hope to keep our Escape at least 10 years, maybe more.

This vehicle lives up to every promise Ford makes. The handling is excellant, power is more than sufficient, options are wonderful. Never had a problem with it. the construction is very solid, as when a gentleman opened up his VERY large oldsmobile door on the right side of the vehicle, my passengers and I did not even feel a bump. I went all out with the options and extras, and am very glad I did. It is a very fun truck to drive, but doesn't feel at all like you are driving a truck...handles just like a car.

I've put 3000 miles on the XLT Premium I bought a month ago, and am very satisified with it. The V6 has plenty of power & a solid feel. Only downside is that I'm averaging just over 20 mpg at 70 mph highway speeds. The ABS brakes are very smooth. It took a few tries to get the driver's seat adjusted right, but now it's comfortable even on long drives. Plenty of cargo space with the seat folded, and flipping the seats is easy. Only problem so far was with the 6-disc CD changer. I loaded a disc but it wouldn't play or eject. A stereo tech replaced it in 5 minutes and the new one works great.

We just returned from a 1,200 mile drive on vacation. This suv/truck/ sports car was an absolute pleasure to drive. We averaged a little over 20 mpg which is great for this strong V6. I highly reccomend the leather seating, the no boundries roof rack and the 16" sport wheels & tires, it`s gives the vehicle a little more class.

In 1 year I have had 3 engine problems (nothing major but still inconvenient). Performance wise, the vehicle is excellent. The acceleration is quick and it handles like a dream! The cargo room is adequate. The back seats fold down with little effort, it's great. However, I do worry about the vehicle's thin, light-weight doors in an accident. They don't seem very safe. You must get the center console, without it it feels as though you are going to fall out of the driver's seat.

Moving from a Taurus SHO to this little SUV was a learning experience. It runs well and is quick. It pulls the trailer well also. Having to pull the headrests out to drop the back seat is a pain (Where do I store the head rests). It is a little bouncy on rough roads but otherwise rides well. This SUV is fun to drive and handles well. The only thing I would be concerned with this little jewel of an SUV is the quality of material used to design of the vehicle. I would be willing to pay an extra $1000.00 if the interior components(Plastic, leather seats, etc..) were of higher quality and careful/attention to detail. Overall Ford has got a nice vehicle and I would like to see some improvements in the choice of interior material.

An SUV that responds like a car. Had one for 10 mths with 10K miles. Only in the dealer once for a/c issue and a clunking sound. No problems eversince. Escape drives great, excellent 0 to 50mph, decent MPG. It's nimble and manuverable. Interior is roomy but "plasticky" but works for me with the kids. Exterior design is handsome and clean. Plastic body armor avoids dings. CRV's and RAV's are just too small and severely underpowered. My Escape is sometimes mistaken for an Explorer and that's fine with me.

All of the big things one buys a car for, engine, handling, comfort, reliablity are there! This car is fun. It has a peppy engine that takes me over a twisty mountain road 10 times a week. However.. There was no eye to detail. The rubber stoppers on the rear window fell out in weeks. The big rubber stopper on the driver door fell out a month later. The gromett that holds the seat belt buckle reachable by the driver broke within 3 months, the compartment holding the garage door opener broke at the same time. Whew thats a load. I thought you all might want to know. Ford didn't seem to care!

Have had for two months now, continue to be impressed with the handling of this unit. Drives very much like a car. Wind noise around the A pillar is a bit of a pain, and the front seats could be a little more grippy. No major manufacturing defects have surfaced. One piece of rubber door seal has been a bit loose around the headliner area, but that's about it. Having test drove the Honda CRV extensively, this unit compares very favorably, particularly when you go to accelerate or take long crusing road trips. Strongly recommend the power driver seat as an option. Interior layout is very well thought out.

They handled like trucks but being an suv person, I liked them anyway. I thought I would miss the room in the broncos but the escape is perfect. I find myself thinking up errands to run just to drive it. I am more than satisfied with it.

I have owned a lot of so called "mini" Suv's but none as fun or powerful (with the V6) as I have with the Escape. My son and I go into the back country quite often to camp and fish, so I wanted something that didn't eat up gas and that would get us where we needed to go. The ride is car like so it doesn't beat you up getting to your favorite place yet has enough ground clearance for most off road adventures. I have had no problems with the mini brute but kinda wish it had been built on a frame. Overall, we love it and alot of people ask about it all the time.

It doesnt matter if I put the seat up higher, lower, forward, back, straight up, angled back I'm still not to comfortable !! The rear windshield wiper doesnt touch the glass. I've taken it in once for an oil change & told them that the rear wiper wasnt working properly. They said they fixed it & I got it back working worse than when I brought it in. Oh well, I never had a rear wiper before, so no big deal. runs smooth, handles great & looks cool !! I doubt that I will ever go back to a car again !!!

The Escape is fun, designed well, quiet, comfortable and handles very well. I was a solid Jeep person for 30 years until I drove the Escape. Better gas mileage, more for your money with a corresponding lower price. I paid more for my last Jeep Cherokee four years ago than I paid for my Escape and the options on both are about the same. I got the 4X4 XLT model which comes standard with a lot of options. The only real option that was on the Escape was the Mach stereo system which has 300 watts, seven speakers, and a 6 CD changer. This thing rocks! And the way the weather has been lately, I may still get to try it in the snow!

One of the biggest points on me buying the Escape was the "supposed" reliability of the Duratec 3.0 V6. I had this engine in my 96 Taurus for 175,000 trouble free miles. At 1400 miles, I changed oil and checked all fluids personally. At 2450 miles, I had an 1/8 inch oil slick in my antifreeze reservoir. Dealer is replacing the motor with a new one.

Gas milage only about 18 (CITY) I did get 24 (HIGHWAY) ONE time! This vehicle has never been back for service, other than oil change, It is even better than the 2001, that I had, that was wrecked with 16K on it! My only complaints are small... I would like to see a lighted ignition switch, (It's hard to find at night) and I would like a little better ride, like the NEW Explorer! Definately the MOST BANG FOR YOUR BUCK SUV (in my opinion)

Ford and Mazda hit it right on the money and many don't like it! This SUV had a rough start and many took advantage of initial problems and let them be known. I am a proud owner of a 2001 V6 XLT 4x4 in beautiful black. Loaded with stepbars, sunroof, bike racks, tint, 6CD changer the works. I take it skiing, fishing and tow my jet skiis. Granted, the interior needs a little updating but its no worse than a Suzuki, or Honda interior..

It's the first SUV I've bought, and so far, it's everything I've expected. We've just had a bad week of ice/snow, and the SUV has again proved its worth. My first FORD. Lot of car for the money - very happy with the car, fun to drive - to much wind noise. Overall, very happy.

Just recently bought a 2002 Ford Escape. Fun to drive, comfortable, excellent looks. Rear seats extremely comfortable. Excellent 6 Disc CD Changer radio. Sound quality awesome.

Having owned a Mustang GT and a Taurus, I find the Escape a great combination of both. A sporty drive and room for people and stuff. It corners impeccably, yet the handling is forgiving. I have a 70 mile commute each day, and take road trips into the mountains. The Escape is at home on the highway and back roads, as long as they are paved. Since many of the parts are shared with a Taurus, I have had some of the same HV/AC problems with the Escape.

The 2002 Escape 2WD XLT Premium is a fun SUV to drive and has plenty of cargo space. The only complaint is the shift mechanism for the automatic gets in the way of the way of stereo controls.

Well I have had my escape since May 2001 and I Love it. I have had a few problems though with the Alarm and Key systems. They had to replace the "brain" of the car soon after we took it home bc of a malfunction with the digital key system. The wind noise could be better but I dont notice it too much bc of the great stereo system. All in all a fun and safe car to drive that has its minor flaws.

The key sticks in the igition. We have to wiggle it out. Took it back to the dealer 3 times. Even changed the igition. Did not help. We were told by someone there that the escape and some other brands are using a forign tumbler and that is causing the problems. So the problem can't be fixed unless they change back to American. If anyone has any ideas please email me. [email protected]
