Bought car new in 2002. Now has 365,000km on a never serviced engine except regular oil changes and one set of platinum spark plugs. But, the engine fault light kept coming on. Noticed that it did so after a rain or during damp weather. Argued with the dealer who replaced all sensors, on-board computer, new wiring harness after telling me not to tell him how to do his job. Took Chrysler to court, won the suit, got all my money back that wasn't covered under the warranty and took car to independent mechanic who replaced the gasket between the gas tank and the car body and have had no problems since then. He said he had done so with many Dodge/Chryslers.

Bought this car brand new - had 90 miles on it. Have maintained it well. Has 225 hp and is close in power to my 2008 Charger. I LOVE this car. Still have it, had a custom paint job done. After owning this car for 11 years only issues I've had: Power window motors (under warranty) replaced. Sometimes the lights dim inside the dash area (might be from amp for speaker?) and check engine light comes on once in a while - might be electrical issue? I change the oil and the light goes off - so this car has oil changes more often than recommended. I know those things sound bad, however it has 70,000 miles and is very strong and beautiful still. - Intrepid Lover!

I have had two intrepids. My first used in 1998 was beautiful and fully loaded. It cost a fortune to have anything worked on because they put everything under the engine. First the thermostat out, water pump, belts since the engine was pulled. Got rid of it. Thinking they surely would have changed everything since the new design came out, I bought another. Fully loaded. Same darn problems as before but I'm sitting here with no A/C and its 105 outside. I think that is BS when an auto company knows it has problems but doesn't fix until government forces them to. Never a Dodge ever ever again. Treat your customers with respect and dont sell something you know is wrong.

I bought this car last month as my first car from my grandmother with 82k miles on it. I've driven it before that as well, and it's a great car with a ton of features and it runs great! I plan on having this car for at least 10 more years (I think it'll make it that far). I highly recommend getting the 3.5L engine, rather than the 2.7L. I did my research, and that model seems to require a lot more upkeep then the 3.5L does.

After I wrecked my first car, my dad settled on an 02 Dodge Intrepid R/T. It was perfect for a teenage girl who often drives with multiple people. Lots of space in the car/trunk, and a very comfortable ride. My Dad claimed he had trouble seeing out of it, but at 19 I had no trouble. I had this car for 2 1/2 months, and in a freak accident it caught on fire in mid April due to a gas leak. The fire department could not make it to the scene in time to stop the car from being totaled. The engine was completely melted and the car was finished. We had only liability on this so insurance did not cover the loss. Despite the way I lost it, this car will probably always be my favorite. I recommend it.

Stay away from this car

We bought this car with 57K miles on it. Most of our driving is highway driving. At about 122K the engine went. I noticed the oil light was on and immediately took it to my mechanic. Due to a poor oil pan design, oil sludge had built up in the engine. Chrylser was aware of the problem. If you get this car make sure you keep oil change records. I was reimbursed by Chrysler for about 1/3 of the cost of the engine replacement. It was very expensive to fix. We paid almost as much for the engine as we did for the car. I am car shopping right now and will not buy another Dodge product.

I am dreading the day when I will have to replace this car. There is simply nothing currently on the market that can replace this car's interior space. Also despite it's size, it drives like a much smaller car. I currently have in excess of 100,000 miles on this car after purchasing it new in 2002. Mechanically, the transmission had to be rebuilt at 80,000 miles, and have had no other problems. The interior is still excellent with no visible wear (two children). I also replaced the 17" chrome wheels with Vox aftermarket aluminum wheels due to corrosion causing rim leaks. This has been the best 4 door sedan I have ever owned including Volvos, Mercedes, and Toyotas I owned in the past.

Bought ours used and we thought we got a great buy. Then the problems started to hit us. Thermostat went out was $160 to replace it because a normal man without a car hoist can't get to it, REALLY! Then 1 of the 2 ELECTRIC fans that cool the motor went out. Then it kept over heating anyway. Come to find out, it's the water pump. It is made to leak a tiny amount of water as it starts to go out. Causing you to over heat. $600 minimum to replace as it is inside the motor. Since they have to take off the timing belt, might as well replace it too, another $125 in parts. My mechanic said to use 5w-20 synthetic oil only! Other oils cause build-up in side the motor causing them to blow!

I bought this car used, and immediately started having problems with it over heating. Once I got that fixed, it ran great for a few more months, then it broke down again. This time with major engine problems. I've had the car 3 years and have only been able to use it for 2, considering all the time it's been in the shop. My brother had the Stratus and had nothing but problems as well. Would not recommend any Dodge vehicle.

Don't buy this car.

Purchased used in 2003 with 10,000 miles. Needed breaks in 2004 and again in 2006. Automatic windows stopped working in 2006. Paint on bumper is slowly flaking off. Needed new transmission and cam shaft in August of 2009. Now in November of 2009 oil sludge has completely ruined the engine and car has only 110,000 miles on it.

Had this 02 Dodge Intrepid 3 months and the engine blew after needing a water pump at the time. Engines are bad news for Intrepids as stated on the internet and mechanics' opinions. Do not buy an Intrepid, there was no warranty whatsoever and this vehicle had the engine light on upon my leaving the parking lot with it. European Auto fixed it somewhat but then suddenly went "out of business" without giving me the $1300 check for promising to buy my Isuzu Trooper and issue me a check for it. Repairs were not completed by them on this vehicle and no check was ever given me for the Trooper even tho they sold the Trooper the first week.

Bought this car for the room and price. It's huge inside. We got the 2.7 for the milage and it'll do 30 on the highway. Everything was good until 90,000. It started with a water pump and ended with $3,000. Now the transmision is on the way out and 130,000. Don't forget about the front end falling out of it also. If your going to buy a Dodge go ahead and purchase a transmission with it, they're terrible. I'm done with dodge.

Hello...I bought my Intrepid ES new in Nov. 2001. I was not sure about buying a Dodge, but I liked what I saw, and I was right. Dodge had a WINNER with this car! Only minor teething problems at first, but it quickly grew into a strong and reliable car. GOOD looking also. I recently had to replace a wheel/rim due to corrosion, which was causing an air leak in the tire. I have read where this is a problem common to certain styles of wheels. I would still have this car, but it was recently (8-2009) totaled in a crash. It took a SEVERE high speed rear end impact, but no intrusion into the passenger compartment! If Dodge still made this model, I would buy another one. HMR

Bought this car in 2002 and figured to get 100-150K mileage at best. Still driving with over 205k. Have a solenoid pack switch to replace, but other than that, best car I have ever owned. I still brag that I have a Dodge with over 200K and no serious problems (I am shooting for 300k now). Chrysler, bring back the Intrepid!!!!

louisiana has the worst roads. my car has 100000 miles, and the only things that r wrong is the shocks are a bit old, brakes need to be changed, and the a/c went out. a/c cost $800! and battery post was causing false dash signals, in particular the oil light. I fill the tank for $24 dollars. i love the V6, but the headlight lens is foggy. Beautiful car. 16 inch rims, blue speckled paint. You can fit 4 bodies in the trunk. dont ask me how i know that. safety feature in the trunk that allows you to open it from the inside. cant do much mud riding, but great on the highway. oh driver window rattles when lowered.

After reading all of these reviews from when people first bought their Intrepid I'd like to hear from anyone that still owns a 2.7 L. I bought mine used with low miles and thought I got a deal. Then the problems started. Water pump, timing chain, tensioners and on and on. I believe the 2.7 is a lemon.

I purchased this car after my 2001 Chrysler Concorde was hit by an off-duty cop. The 3.5 L motor is the best. Great power, high MPG (25 MPG in Denver, 30 MPG on highway). Highly reliable and extremely comfortable. I wish Dodge/Chrysler hadn't quit making this car - it is much roomier than the Charger/300 replacement. I put 18K on the car each year and not problems whatsoever. If you find one that has been maintained (I'm a mechanic) you'll be pleased.

My dad got the car with 20K miles on it when it was 2 years old. and not a single scratch or dent. We never had any problems besides the O2 sensor went out. We took this car to Denver from Twinfalls, Idaho. and to Portland Oregon several times. Now that it has 110K miles on it I own it now and the power, looks, reliability, and Gas mileage is awesome. This car with the 3.8 gives most V8s a run for their money. Even after my mom wrecked it its still been an awesome car i have put 22,000 mi on it and had to replace the rear brakes thats all!

I got this car at 36000 miles. Three months later, the water pump went out (it was so bad that all of the fluid would come out as soon as I out it in). The thermostat was replaced twice and needs it done again. The dome lights in the car blink on and off. Sometimes staying on for more than 15mins ( I was told it was the DCM). The car overheated and they don't know why. The oil light comes on and off. All in all I do like the car, I just wish there weren't so many problems.

Wish they still made them!

I've driven intrepids for years. The first was a 1995 se model. I love the safety and security of a larger car, and finally found one with the handling and performance to match. When the time came for a new car, I knew I wanted to try the second generation intrepid. I put over 200k on the 1995 model, so I had no doubts about buying another one. So I went with a 2002 Intrepid se. The performance and handling were drastically improved, which was suprising sice they were already fabulous. Not to mention the sleek new exterior, and finally, awesome headlights. Dodge made all the right improvements to this car. The only complaint I have is that they were discontinued after 2004.

I would buy another Intrepid but I look at new cars now, since this body style is not available and can not find a car I would like to drive. Highway driving every day I feel very comfortable. Strong engine and great handling. Michigan driving in all weather not a problem.

I purchased this vehicle used one year ago and have put 19,000 miles on it since then. Absolutely no problems whatsover. Great handling on dry, wet, and snowy roads. Very good fuel economy (24MPG average communting in town). 3.5L motor is a true workhorse, with lots of power if you need it, but quiet cruising at 85MPH on the interstate. More room inside than the new Charger. I expect this car to give me at least 100,000 more miles without a problem.

When I bought this car, I thought I was getting a great deal on the car. After I brought the car home, the probs hit. Engine light comes on every other day, the oil light comes on after hard use of the car. Driver window will not work now. Thumping sound when breaking, and the CD player died the 3rd week. My friend keeps telling me that Dodges are great but after what I am seeing, I really don't know. The standard 6 in the engine bay has some pep. For being a larger car, it handles good, nothing like my old Ford Focus tho. Handles fair in the rain and it corners like a pig. Also watch out for dips in the road, car bottoms out some times.

Still very tight at 87K. Good power; I recommend the 3.5L. I've found it to be great in the snow also. I read the car was top 20 in reliabililty somewhere. That made me feel pretty good. I like the dashboard and white instrument panel. Had a 93 Intrepid and a 96 LHS. This 2nd generation Intrepid has been refined. Much tighter than the LHS at the same miles.

This has been the best car I've ever had. One minor glitch in Feburary '05 with a leaking water outlet housing. Other than that, I am highly satisfied with this car and would recommend it to families that need a car with a lot of room. I average 23 MPG overall and it has enough power to get me down the road. As long as maintenance is kept up and as a suggestion to all, use synthetic motor oil, this car will last your over 200,000 miles. Awesome car!

People seem to be complaining about gas mileage? Come on people, get REAL! Per SQ. Ft., this is no doubt the most economical SPORT/Family-"FunToDrive" car on the road!! At 234HP, this vehicle with a 3.5L Outperforms ANY car in it's class/year and price range. More importantly, it does it with style, agility and room to spare! If you want 2-4 MPG more, go for half the room, no pep, flat, boring Honda and pay thousands more! Buy this however, and you can put a couple of those thousands in the gas tank and be very pleanantly surprised and happy with all the room and style you got, not even to mention the truely spirted drive you'll experience!

I wanted a decent-sized 4 door, and the Intrepid is more than I expected. The engine is just the right power, the handling is superb, seats very comfortable, styling is pleasing, good brakes and it's very roomy in front and trunk. Visibility is ok - driver side blind spot needs some attention, and front of car is invisible. Otherwise excellent.

I have had my Intrepid for over a year now and purchased at 39,000. I have had only one problem, the check engine light goes on and off but when checked shows no problems. Other than that, the performance of this car is great. I have 2 kids and they are very comfortable in the roomy back seats. The truck is HUGE and enough room to put lots of toys, car supplies and groceries in all at the same time. I have even hooked up a TV/DVD player and new CD player and had no problems. Just keep up the engine maintanence on the car and you are good to go.

I've had my SXT for almost 2 years now and I've had no problems with it. I was rear-ended 8 months after buying it and the shop did an excellent job of restoring it to near new shape. Even with this accident, I've had no mechanical problems. Great car for long distance traveling or the QUICK jaunts to the corner store. I've been a MOPAR fan since I was a teenager and the styling of this car fits in with some of the classics such as the 68-70 Charger. Looking forward to this car being the first one I've owned to far exceed 100K before even considering a replacement.

I bought my 02 Intrepid last year at 27,000 miles. Now at 42,000 engine check light comes on once a while and just turns off, even computer diganosis couldnt figure out where the plm is coming from. My car has a spoiler and tinted window. It is very sporty looking same time a family car. Its like a small airplane on a highway. However, the radio should be better and u cannot even see the front part of the car when u are parking. MPG should improve thou...

An outstanding ride for a relatively low price. I love sport sedans and the exterior shape of the Intrepid gave me a lot to work with. I had it outfited it with a Spoiler, air Scoops, rims, flames, sports exhaust and more. In terms of interior comfort, it rides like a cadillac, with spaciousness to spare. The cab forward design allows the intrepid to sit glued to the road at all speeds. Power to weight ratio, with anything from a 201HP - 250HP sealed engine, it really moves. The ride is super quiet & when idling you are unaware that the engine is running. No problems whatsoever with this car. Recommend it to anyone wanting a good sporty sedan.

Good so far..

I think the intrepid is a wondeful car for the right sized person. I am 6' 2" and it is tough to get in and out of, but it is ok when you settle in. The low roof line can be a pain.

I purchased this car new in March of 2002. I am extremely happy with both it's performance and reliability (Zero Problems). Though not as refined as some of the foreign competition, the bang for the buck quotient is very high. Interior room is amazing, and I wouldn't be surprized if this car has the largest trunk capacity in it's segment. It just doesn't seem right that a car this big should handle like it does. Just think, a car with 244 ponies, great handling, tremendouse interior space, and distinctive exterior styling for under thirty grand MSRP. What more could you want.

Best bang for your buck!!

My wife and I bought our Intrepid new in 10/01 with 5 miles on the odometer. Now, 2+ years and 32,000 miles later, I can't say enough good things about it. The 2.7L six does everything I ask of it, returns 24 mpg in small town driving, and between 28-30 mpg on the highway (depending on how heavy my foot is). Everything has worked perfectly on this Dodge, and I expect to own it many years after the final payment.

Our Intrepid is a beautiful Inferno Red SXT, best looking car in town. After 15,000 miles, trouble started, with a transmission leak at 800 miles. Next was replacement of the radio. Next was replacement of the fog lights. Then the "engine malfunction light" came on. Car has been out of service 15 days since then. They can't seem to find or fix the problem. Nov. 6,we are taking it in for the sixth time to have this problem "fixed". Purge valve regulator will be installed. To date they have installed four themostats and the water pump and yet the light keeps coming on. The last time they had it for eight (8) days.

Got w/17K. GREAT used price. Needed room to fit my 2 teens in the backseat. Researched and narrowed down to Intrepids and LeSabres. After driving and pricing both, the decision was easy: it sold itself: an '02 for the price of an '00/'01 LeSabre, and way less miles. Love the styling! Sleek/Sporty for a "family" sedan. The power moonroof and rear deck spoiler complete the "look" (I'm not much for spoilers - usually cheesey looking - this one's very complementary). Just took 2500 mile trip w/kids. TONS of trunk room, comfy, great power passing those semi's, decent mpg(29 w/o AC, 25 with)- 3.5L V6. Have never been so enamoured with a car.

I bought the vehicle used from Enterprise (nice sales experience btw), and got a 2002 Intrepid SE w/ 23k miles, for $12,000. The interior is the ROOMIEST of any family sedan. The base engine is powerful enough for most drivers, unless you are begging for reckless driving citations. The vehicle has presence on the road. The engine/tranny do seem busy when hard-pressed(floored), as the car downshifts, and revs up to 6000rpm. Gas mileage is excellent for its size, the only noise to be heard most of the time is low road noise from the tires.

When I began looking for a new (used) car, I didn't even think about Dodge or Chrysler vehicles. My focus was mainly on Accords, Camrys and other Japanese makes. But I promised myself I would leave no stone unturned, so at the very last minute I turned my attention to a silver Intrepid ES at a local Dodge dealership. I'm glad I did. It proved to be the absolute best mix of the things I was looking for: great styling, strong performance, tons of room, tight suspension, extremely affordable price (used w/ 25k miles) and low insurance costs. I'd recommend these cars to anyone with a clean conscience.

I bought the car as an interum verhicle. I really enjoy the car. I have rented them in the past. In fact I rented the car for a coast drive in CA and really enjoyed it. Im 6'2" and fit in this car perfectly. The ride is great, very nice seats, cold ac and great backseat for traveling. My only concern is the resale value. I think this car declines in value quickly, but is very cheap used to begin with, so as long as you expect this, I think its a great value and car.

I'd highly recommend looking elsewhere for a vehicle which is more reliable and build well than this Dodge Intrepid. The styling is great but I guess I got what I paid for. Within the first year of ownership this car was back to the dealer for repairs 6 times. 3 oxygen sensors, 1 master cylinder, 1 brake booster, 1 thermostat and a partridge in a pear tree. Just recently I had to replace the rotors and brake pads due to major vibrations in the steering wheel when braking at high speeds. After 28,500 miles(mostly on the highway) I ready to sell this piece.

I puchased this vehicle with 25,000 miles on the odo as a previous rental. The 3.5l engine is a delight to drive with plenty of torque on hand without unnecessary downshifting. The car handles much better than it's size would imply and out on the highway it's a cruising machine! The body feels very solid with no perceived twist or flex. No squeeks or rattles. I average between 21 and 24 mpg in mixed rural driving and fully expect I could get 26+ mpg on the open road. Leather seats nicer than I expected. Love the automatic climate control.

This has been an excellent vehicle for my family of 4. I average 24 mi/gal, and find the 200hp 2.7L 6cyl has plenty of pep. I've had it on 2 long road trips, and can't say enough good things about that endless cavern of a trunk, which swallows all our luggage and kid debris with the greatest of ease. The stereo sounds great, the looks are great, and the interior is laid out well. I highly recommend the Intrepid.

Great car to drive. I've had no problems at all, however I was shocked when I checked its retail value one year after purchase. These cars drop in value like a rock. If their insurance policy pays retail value on accidental replacement, a buyer of a new Intrepid would need some type of gap insurance.

I just purchased my 2002 ES Intrepid with 20,000 already on it; it was in a rental fleet prior to purchase. I have always wanted one of these cars since the new design came out, and now I own one. Being newly divorced I wanted something sexy and I feel this is the Car for us in our forties "hey any ladies" The car has not given me one problem yet it is very sound and well constructed, no rattles even after being a rental. I believe Chrysler listened to their customers on this one. I am a Quality Engineer in aircraft manufacture for planes that cost millions, and the attention to detail for the cost of this car is right on the mark.

Bought my '02 Intrepid SXT 5 months ago and it has been in the shop four times with the engine light coming on and the speakers not working. I was told that the gas cap has to be replaced firmly and clicked 3 times or the engine light will come on. My problem keeps returning even though I perform the necessary requirments for replacing the gas cap. When I start the engine, the radio may or may not work. If it gives me static, I have to turn off the engine and restart for it to work. The car rides very low to the ground, so dont straddle the road kill.

Indoor passenger side over head handle gave away when I took one of my customers for lunch. I could not believe that this car has such poor engineering indoors. There is a loss of power when I put car in reverse to pull out of a parking spot. Overall with my two months of driving this car daily, I am disappointed. We have a big family, so I needed a vehicle that would seat 6, but did not want a 2nd minivan or big boat. I wanted something with the room but still fun to drive. Quickly narrowed the search to the Impala, Bonneville and Intrepid. After long test drives, the Intrepid seemed the obvious choice. Great styling, good handling, fairly powerful engine. It's been dependable and for the price, you can't find a car that gives you more.

A good family car

The Intrepid so far seems to be a excellent buy, Handling and power are nice and the ride is excellent. Road noise from the tires at times can be a little loud but not a big deal. On sundays this car transports 4 adults and 1 child without a problem, there is plenty of room. Parking this car can be a trick sometimes though and backing up isnt always a treat, but with that aside it has proven to be a excellent buy. Just wish it had ABS standard
