Good performance from old school V-6. Easy on the fuel costs and insurance. Lotsa light and air from the simple on/off T-Tops. Not a winter/snow car. Still draws compliments after two decades.

The V6 is not much compared to newer ones, but it will still pick up to highway speeds before you could turn your head to check the other lane. Takes any turn without a problem, good on fuel, and how could you ever forget the nostalgic but mandatory t-tops. Interior is roomy in the front, the back, can be made comfortable if you're sitting alone.

I bought a 2011 Camaro 2LT with variable valve timing, twin cam, 4 valves per cyclinder direct injected V6 (state of the art), the advertised hp is 312. I also bought a used 2002 Z28 with the LS1 engine from the same dealer for a good price. The advertised hp is 310 for the 2002 Z28. But when I drive each car, the 2002 Z28 seems a whole lot more powerful. Elapsed time at a control track also proves the z28 is more powerful. I did some reseach and found that for the 1998 to 2002 LS1 engines, the true hp at the rear wheels on the camaro is more like 350 (same LS1 in the corvettes). The torque ratings were also dumbed down by GM on these camaros

I have now had my 02 Z28 for 6 yrs. It has 92k miles. The LS1 is great! it can withstand alot of abused. These cars with bolt ons can easily get into the 400hp+ range. but add cam, heads and a real proper tune and you can get 450 to 490rwhp range ..all day long, that translates to 500-550bhp WITHOUT the need for nitros, turbo or supercharger. These cars were underrated so vette owners didn't have a cow. LS1's make around 290-310rwhp which is the same as stock Vettes. For people on this board who say the V6 makes V8 power....aaahhhh no... it doesn't. Please get into the V8 FIRST then tell me if your V6 is like a V8. Theres like a 150hp and 150tq difference!

I bought my 2002 3.8 liter V6 Camaro just a few weeks ago and I'm truly impressed. My last car was a 1995 Camaro V6 and I dove it from 207,000 miles to 239,500 miles. After I sold it, I knew I had to have another Camaro and the 2002 is even better than my '95. This 2002 only has 95,000 miles and it performs like a muscle car - a V8 muscle car. The styling is wonderful inside and out and the engine is very sound. I can tell this car was a good buy and I'm going to be driving it for years to come.

After reading the Edmunds editors reviews of the 4th generation Camaros, I suddenly felt the need to write a review of my own. I don't ever recall seeing such obvious bias in a review; but then, I haven't read many other reviews of American muscle cars, so maybe that's where their issues lie. I am very happy with my '02 Camaro; sure it's not perfect, and it's not Japanese, but it is a lot of fun to drive, is as reliable as any other car of its ilk, and oh did I mention it's a blast to drive. The car has over 120k miles on it now, and the engine & transmission are a solid now as they ever were. I've been able to fix any minor issues that have come up.

I have had my 2002 camaro 35th anniversary edition since January of 2002. 8 months ago, I had the water pump replaced. Today, I had the sway bar replace and in the very near future I will need to have the catalytic converter replaced. Considering that I have 153,000 miles on this car, I think its done really well.

But pointless even though its a v6 it hauls like a v8. 0 to 60 mid 7 secs good for a commuting car and the mileage is good to 30 mpg for the highway going 70mph. Really great car.

I have driven my 2002 z28 auto as HARD as possible, for the last 7 years! With over 50 dragstrip passes (13.1s @ 109mph) at bradenton dragstrip and never one single problem! You can't kill the almighty LS1 engine. 17 mpg with a heavy right foot! Handling, braking, and acceleration easily scares anybody in the passenger seat! Critics should have bought a camary. A Z28 is for incredible thrills everyday, for over seven years I still smile every morning!

Great car, In college my roomate and I built a '91 GTA trans am and I always wanted another F-body. Found this one on a used car lot. The interior is pretty craptastic and there are some squeaks and rattles, but the car is extremely fast, it is well known that the 310hp factory rating was grossly low to make sure the Vette was the king of the GM hill. My car has long tube headers and other bolt ons, probably good for around 325 rwhp (haven't dynoed yet). Engine and tranny feel rock solid. My car does have a modified suspension and low profile tires so the ride is harsh but the seats are quite comfortable which help.

Did the editors even drive this car?

This car is exceptional. I have owned a lot of cars in my life, including a 1968 Camaro, which is the only one that compares to this vehicle in performance. This car has literally saved my lie on several occasions. I don't drive a high performance vehicle to show off, Phoenix roads are dangerous. When I tell my car to do something, I expect an instant result. On at least three occasions, spit second performance has avoided serious accidents. She is asthetically appealing as well. She always turns heads, a nice bonus. She leaks a little in a car wash and the stereo needs upgrade. Everything else is amazing. I am giving this to my son and getting the 2009 when available!

Excellent reliability. I have had this car for almost five years and have spent $0 on repairs, outside of normal maintenance. Gas mileage is great, given the current price of gas. Unique enough that I typically do not see another like it going down the road. Handling is excellent. I drive the car year round and have driven in a foot of snow with no problem (My son's Mazda 626 got stuck!)

Have had this car for just over a month. Its performance is incredible and I get 22-23 in overall city/hiway driving. Engine is amazingly powerful; radio is a great boom box and handling is outstanding. Was a one- owner vehicle and has only 54K miles. I thank the previous owner for taking such good care of it. Have received many compliments on this beautifully styled vehicle. Looking forward to seeing the redesigned Camaro in model year 2009, but very happy with the one I have. LS1 engine is awesome.

This is the second Camaro I've had (last one was a '97), and I was even more satisfied this time around with the overall performance. This car is still running great after owning it for 5 years. Keeping up with the maintenance is essential for these cars. I wasn't as careful with my last Camaro, and I ended up with several mechanical problems.

I have 105,000 miles on this car and it runs/drives like new. Still gets 23mpg and I do not drive it easy! Can't find more bang for the buck performancewise anywhere. Mustang drivers still look at these with respect 5yrs after they're no longer made. It's has a cheap, plasticky, rattly interior, but if that starts to bug you just punch the gas and you'll remember why you tolerate this thing.

This car is amazing. I have owned it for a couple months, and in that time, I have had a blast with it. Drifting is fun with the ASR (acceleration-slip reduction) off, and downshifting from 5th into 4th while going down the road just to get the feeling of being thrown back into the seat is just indescribable. I would've gone for a Z28/ SS, but for an entry-level sports car, I saw the base Camaro as a perfect idea

There has got to be something good here. They were used for police cars. They are headturners. Haven't had it in any weather yet, so I'm waiting to see. Can't believe when they end a tradition they make a plain base car. But it handles nice, ride is pretty good for sport, gas mileage isn't bad. It is a bit wide to see with the mirrors.

This is my first car. My dream car was always a Z28/SS Camaro with a 6-speed. Well I didn't get that, but I got my 2002 silver Camaro with black stripes. And a 5-speed. This car is so fun to drive. The mileage is amazing. On the way up from seeing my sister I got 28 mpg. It is very easy to get the tires lit up also. If I had the choice I'd go for the V8 any day, but the cost of gas and tires these days the V6 is just more practical.

Well, here it is nearly 4 years since I took delivery of my Canadian made '02 Z28, and still performs like the Vette, the Porsche 911 (0-60MPH), the A4, and can outrun any Mercedes BMW and the new Charger RTS. I use synthetic oil (Mobil One 10W- 30),rotate the tires faithfully, maintain about 5 psi above Chevy's recommended 30 psi, change the air filter every 6 months, just flushed the cooling system, brake system and transmission with 18,000 miles on the vehicle. And for all that nit-pickey extra maintenence, I get a whopping 33 MPG @ 70 MPH w/cruise control set. Now, lets see what GM has to offer with the new upgrade Camero next year. So far I like what I hear from rumour central.

Having owned more than 20 cars over the past 30 years, I can say that my 2002 Z28 Camaro is the best vehicle I've ever owned. I've added some performance and handling bolt-ons, along with the Hypertech Power Programmer and the results are fantastic. 0-60mph in 4.5sec, 1/4 mile in 12.7sec, and I've cruised at over 160mph. Normal driving I average 24.5- 28.4 highway and 14-16 city. I use only synthetic lubricants (engine, gearbox & rear axle); Mobil-1 for the engine with Z-Max additive. Soon, I'll be adding the GM Performance Parts LS1- to-LS6 conversion (heads & cam, 2002 Z06 Corvette) and a F.A.S.T. LSX Intake with a ZEX Nitrous setup. Love my 2002 Z28. Thanks Chevrolet!

Drifting the car / burnouts very easy. The car is built solid and doesnt seem to have any problems. The seats even though they are cloth are more comfortable than my sister's Mustang's that are leather. Over all it is a sporty fun car that is a great starter car or even a easy driver.

Fun to drive. Have six speed Z28 with all the options. Not built well and mileage averages 13, way below EPA. Got it with big discount at end of build out. Great weekend car with tight feel. Stay away from snow and rain as traction poor. Brake rotors warp easily and front window distorts view in areas, Black plastic interior pieces fall off. In other words a piece of GM junk that's really fun to drive. Trade value about half of purchase price after three years. Hard to get in and out of. It's ok as during the week drive the Buick LeSabre.

You can't get any car better for your money than this model. The handling is awsome throughout turns and is very smooth at high speeds. The exterior is very sharp. Overall a very good machine.

I have enjoyed this car more than I ever thought I would! The engine is smooth and powerful. The exterior looks like what we all thought cars would look like in the future. The biggest surprise has been the fact that, lately, it has not been depreciating! I think GM made a terrible mistake when it dropped this car rather than putting a few bucks into it so it could carry the GM flag against the Mustang. Rumor has it that the bean counters at GM said that they only needed to sell one third more Corvettes to break even after killing the Camaro.

This car is an absolute blast to drive. People don't believe it runs 13.3 sec 1/4 mi stock. There still isn't a car available with this kind of power for less than $30K. It isn't for the faint of heart. The stock brake rotors warp every 10K miles. The build quality was low and it showed in several trips to the dealership to replace cracked/warped interior pieces. The glass and paint are soft and chip easily. The unibody flexes causing several rattles and squeaks. The right catalytic converter sits just in front of the passenger seat making it quite uncomfortable for some riders. Take a test ride as well as a drive. It has never failed to get me where I'm going however.

Great performance of a 60's muscle cars like the 427 camaro's of old, with double the fuel economy, three times the amount of handling and features. Best of all the Ls1 V8 aluminum block with alot of performance availability, what a push rod legend. These cars can really lay down the low end power. Ad a good exhaust and air intake and 400 hp is not too far off for under half the price of expensive imports or the vette. Great driving on back roads and drag strip launches on high way on ramps what a blast to drive..

I like the car but the engine started to knock at 15,000 miles. GM says this is normal for this engine. It is very annoying & gets worse the longer the car is driven.

My family hated it, my friends made fun of it...guess what. Zero problems with this car! My buddy's A4 is in the shop monthly! Anyway, I have nothing but good things to say about the car. Ad a few bolt-ons to the car and you have what I have: 338.3 rwhp & 356.5 ft/lbs all @ 2100ft altitude. I took this car on trips between Chicago and So. Cal and it didn't skip a beat. Not even 12k feet up in altitude over the rockies.

Incredible car for the money. Most people don't know that it gets the same fuel economy as a Camry, and matches the Porsche 911 0-60. Plus it has 33.0 cubic feet of cargo area. I think Chevrolet missed their market by not advertising the positives of this car, and by letting the gen 3 f-cars' image discourage would-be buyers. Also, contrary to popular belief, this car isn't bad in the snow. If you think so, just change the tires to all-season.

If you are looking for a solid built beast that will tear up the street as easily as it will shred a set of $1000.00 tires, the camaro is the ticket (if you're on a budget, otherwise go with the vette). I've owned 2 - a '91 RS and my current one - a black on black 2002 SS. If you're looking for the frills that you get in a luxury car, forget it. Sure, you can get plush leather, power everything, and a very respectful stock radio, but the heart of this car is under the hood.

I'VE DRIVEN CONVERTIBLES SINCE I WAS A YOUNG GIRL BUT I WANTED TO GET AWAY FROM THE CUTSIE LITTLE DEATH TRAP AND INTO SOMETHING WITH MORE STYLE AND RELIABILITY AND THE CAMARO IS IT. THE CONVERTIBLE TOP OPERATES SMOOTHLY AND LATCHES DOWN TIGHT, THE AIR CONDITIONING IS ICE COLD AND EXTRAS LIKE LUXURY CAR. THE BODY IS SEXY AND SLEEK AND THOUGH IT'S VERY SIMILAR TO THE FIREBIRD, IT DOESN'T HAVE THE SAME 'PLASTICKY' LOOK TO IT, THE MOLDING AND ACCESSORIES ARE VERY UNDERSTATED. THIS CAR IS SUPER FRISKY AND HAS AMAZING PICK-UP BUT STILL IT'S QUIET AND EASY TO CONTROL. THIS IS THE BEST CAR I'VE EVER OWNED!

My 2002 Sunset Orange Metallic Z-28 has been nothing short of awesome. I've had absolutely zero problems with it, and I get compliments on it almost every time I pull in to the station for a fill-up. The LS-1 truly makes this rumbling beast a "poor-man's Corvette." I'll probably have to get my speakers replaced, but that's this metalhead's fault, not Chevy's. The materials are cheap-looking, but the ergonomics are great.

Great car in straight driving and turns but braking at high speeds is a little scary sometimes since it vibrates a lot. Driving fast in the rain is a very bad idea with this car (mine doesn't have traction control) and the car peels out without me even trying(even though i got new Yokohomas).

Let me start by saying this car is not for everyone. We actually have it as a summer fun car. With that being said it is everything I hoped it would be. The LS1 pulls hard all over the RPM band. The power is there whenever you want it, especially with 6 speed. I did not expect much from the cornering but for is size and live axle it sticks very well to the corner, I love finding corners to carve. The comfort is really good, long trips have been a pleasure. Decent storage space for a sports car. Take this car on a curvy hilly mountain road and no one is going to be able to wipe the grin off your face.

i did't like the idea of gm installing a"safety feature" which shut my 98 z28 off at 112mph. I felt like that was false advertisement when the speed omoter says 150mph,and considering that my 94 z didn't have a shut off.so when i decided to get the 2002 i made sure there was no safety feature on my new z. i was really disappointed in what gm had done, i called gm and asked if the corvette had this safety feature? no! i guess it was a money thing.over all i love my z,but gm almost lost along time z28 fan and customer.

First let me say, there no substitute for big engine w/ big torque.Surprising gas mileage,(50/50 hwy/city driving, 25 mpg)due to the engine not having to work much above 1500 rpm. But when the demand for horses gets the better of you, that 5.7 liters is very willing and able to deliver that power. The useable torque is available anytime in the rpm band. In these days of 4 bangers it is easy to forget those by gone days of "Torque on Demand". The 5.7 of this Camaro puts to shame the 4.6 of my other convertible, a Mustang GT.

As far as bang for the buck, it's impossible to beat the Camaro. Where else can you get over 300 horsepower for under 30,000? Yeah it's crude, loud, noisy and a few shakes and rattles, but that all disappears as you roll into the throttle. My only complaint about the car is moving to Phoenix and seeing my insurance rates double.

Handling and performance of the Camaro SS is awesome. This car is a beast, capable of over 150 mph and quarter mile under 13.5 seconds. It can rock 'n roll in the twisties, too. If you didn't get your factory hot rod 35 years ago, then the Camaro SS is the modern day equal. The SS shares a LS1 V8 with the Corvette, delivery 325-345 horses, The Corvette and Viper are faster, but for a whole lot less money, albeit equally high insurance premiums, the Camaro SS is a bargain.

I love driving this car. It handles well, brakes well, and definitely knows how to get out of the way when necessary. In fact, all the cars that I leave at the line look surprised when they catch up and find a female driving. The 6-speed manual transmission is a nice "upgrade" from the 5. My only issue with it is the annoying skip- shift "feature" that dumps you into 4th from 1st if your RPMs aren't high enough. Yuck. Also, GM should have put larger rotors on this car because the ones that come stock warp in no time. But that's okay, the dealership gets to pay for mine for 100K miles. :) I love my Z. She's a lot of fun.

I had 2 Mustang GT's before this 02 Z28 and the Camaro blows them away in every way. I am like a kid with a new toy, the car is fast and fun and price was excellent. The seats leather is great quality and superior to my 00 Monte Carlo SS or the previous Mustangs I owned. I may have to keep this car forever. The Monsoon sound system is great and the T tops are a great addition for the summer. And for the fully loaded Z28 with every option but traction control, 19,000 was a steal (had 2,000 miles on it).

Great looks, goes like bat out of hell, and I got 25.5mpg on a trip to Pennsylvania with the a/c on! The stock Z-28 leaves with a lot of options on how you want the car to perform. It's a great base for autocrossing, open tracking, or drag racing. The aftermarket industry has a lot to offer. And getting help over the net is easy with sites like ls1.com and ls1tech.com Overall, an inexpensive car with tons of potential.

Overall I am happy with my purchase. I have been born and raised a Ford man but wanted to take a chance with the last Camaro being produced. I'm already at 3K miles as a daily driver and I have no problems. I chose my car without leather and T-tops because I heard the Chevy leather is crap and the T-tops squeak. I have no squeaks in my car. I am comfortable driving my 75 mile a day commute to and from work on the 405 in LA (if you're from here, you know it can be a nightmare). If you can find one, do it now while you still can, you shouldn't be disappointed.

I am having a blast with this car. It has been chosen for weekend fun only and it answers back in spades. I highly recommend this car to any responsible driver looking for something fun to drive when the sun is shining and the beaches are full of ladies! Her road track capabilities are incredible. I ordered mine with the optional 2000 dollar 1LE suspension upgrade. Couldn't be happier. The double adjustable Koni shocks are awesome and the optional BFG G-Force tires look and perform like they were meant for this car. For the money, you won't find anything like this-not even the 2003 Cobra can keep up through the cones.

I just purchased a new black Z28 at the end of OCtober. I felt that I had to get one before they all disappear new and the only way to get one will be a used one. I got the 6 speed with the t- tops, Chrome wheels etc. I grew up with the Camaro. It was born in 1967 ( Iknow actually 9/66) I was born in 1967.So we turn 35 together. I love the car so far. I bought it as a collector /pleasure car and so far, it has been a real pleasure

I would have to say this is by far the funnist car I have ever owened! This car with it's LS1 5.7 V-8 is very fast! Don't under estimate this cars pwoer. It also handles like a go kart! The Camaro is the only car out there that fills the niche for me. I have no need for an SUV. The Japenese imports all look the same to me -- boring. You just can't beat the styling and performance of the Camaro. I wasn't really ready to buy a car yet, but with the last year of production and the rebate, I couldn't refuse. I got a great deal, but then again, that's what everyone thinks. I love the handling, the performance, the looks, and the great fuel economy. It is actually fun to drive to work now.

My Camaro has been my most entertaining car to date. I'd like to address some of the complaints that people typically have about this car: 1) Ride quality: Its solid rear axle isn't going to provide a silky smooth ride, but it isn't bone-jarring either. 2) Build quality: as with all cars: if you beat it, it will break. The F-body has amazing mod potential, and people tend to go overboard with mods, and then complain about their cars breaking. 3) Noise: If you don't appreciate the throaty purr of a V8 at idle, or the wild roar at WOT, then you weren't meant for this car.

Underrated

That's the story of the Camaro for the 4th generation, especially the LS1 (98- up) versions. Editors with little to no experience with the car step in expecting a Lexus ride with Corvette performance. What did they expect for 22K? It's the fastest car hands down in its price range, and contrary to urban legend, its fuel efficiency is amazing (26 MPG A4, 29 M6 highway). Others critique the LS1 with comments like "dinosaur pushrod technology." Hey -- why change what works? What's even more amazing is that almost nobody outside the auto community has realized that the LS1 F-bodies are underrated from the factory.

What can I say, convertible, 5.7 litre, V8, 310 HP with leather and a 500 watt stereo for $30K with 0% financing for 60 months. How can you drive an A4, a 325, (shiver) an X-type or a Mustang when you can drive this. Hit the gas and your head hits the back of the seat. I love this car.

As a former Camaro owner ('78 Rally Sport), I could not resist buying this car in the 35th and final year of production. After looking at convertibles for 2 years, this car fit the bill from a price, quality, and performance standpoint. Getting a convertible with this much performance at less that Edmunds TMV and walking away with thousands of $$ in my pocket was a great feeling. The build quality on this car is very good inside and out and I noticed none of the problems noted in other editorials. The car rides and drives very well with gas mileage in the 20- 22 range in town and 23 plus on the highway.

Everything is great about this car except the V6 engine. What a letdown. Two weeks ago I went back to the dealer and special ordered a Z/28 with almost all the same options. I ordered it with the 3.23 axle. I would not have bought another Camaro if it wasn't a great car.

This is my 5th Camaro & I wanted to get the last of the breed when GM the ends the F-body, so I got the 35th Anniversary edition Camaro SS convertible. Too much for a regular Camaro ($38k+), but well worth it for a collector edition of 1 of the last of the true muscle cars. Great performance thru a bullet proof 6 speed tranny & fun to drive. 'Arrest me red' is not my favorite color, but this is a very nice package with exterior stripes, leather, large wheels and tires; an overall package that makes for a real performance car, easily capable of serious performance upgrades, yet with decent gas mileage a& a civilized car capable of commuting in the worst traffic.

I have the automatic (upper back problems with a clutch). Still, this baby does fly. Very good handling. Recommend Chevy drop the overly raked windshield, fastback, the toooo (55 inches) long doors and go to the Retro version as seen in a previous Motor Trend article when, not if, they build the new one.

Now, I had the horse power tested aftewr a new muffler and induction lid.....317 HP at the wheels, which translates to 385 HP at the motor. This thing has the Flagship LS1 motor and comes with 350 HP off of the show room floor (yes, GM UNDER rates these cars, as not to piss off the Vette owners) Anyone who says that these cars can only drive in a straight line has never driven a ercent one. The bang to buck ratio os awesome..these from 0-60 and through the quarter mile faster than the Porsche 911 (non turbo) and they are trapping the same speed as the new vwttes, whoah!

But you are getting the sharpest, fastest muscle car built in 2001. I love the feeling you get when you step on the gas, Also, with and upgraded exhaust system you get the best muscle car sound around. As I said earlier, you know what to expect when you buy a Z28. ... however there is a petition to have the LS1 engine recalled due to the fact that the #1 and sometimes the #2 cylinder is over-bored causing the engine to knock. Almost every LS1 engine that GM put into the Camaro, Corvette, or Truck has this problem. GM has chosen to ignore this much the same as they have other problems in the past, some of which have cost people their lives. I still love the car but, I will not buy another car with the LS1 engine until this problem has been resolved.
