BMW claims "the ultimate driving machine". I would take this car any day of the week over a 3 series. Very fun to drive with little to no issues over the past 6+ years. Like all German car part and repairs are not cheap. That said I have had nothing major happen with my car but I do not allows little things go unchecked. If you do the maintenance and stay on top of the warnings you can get 200K or more miles out of these cars. A little word to anyone interested in buy a German car, run premium fuel. They like it better and will save you money in the long run!!!!

Take care of it and it will take care of you

I have owned this car for 8 years and 100k miles. I bought it from the first owner with 85,000 miles. It now has 185,000. In the eight years I have owned it, I have religiously changed the oil every 5k miles with Mobil 1 0w40 and Mahle oil filter. I have done all the work on this car myself (timing belt 2X... thank you Blauparts, all control arms, shocks, brakes and various sensors). Now that the car is getting older, there have been more aging items to replace (vacuum hoses, fuel pump, more sensors... this car has a ton). If you are not interested in maintaining the car, don't get it; it will be a major headache. If you can maintain the car, it will be one of the best cars you have every owned. Amazingly stable and confident driving in all road conditions. Comfortable and well laid out interior. I particularly love that it was one of the last generations before they started stocking them full of touch screen garbage and displays that distract. Also, one of the last generations to have the sport suspension and six speed manual with the 6 cylinder and "luxury" interior. If and when I decided to replace this car I don't know what I'll get because Audi doesn't make many cars this driver focused anymore... sad...

02 audi a4 1.8t quattro manual speed. I owned it for a very long time and now has 233765 miles on it with still original head gasket, starter, turbo, alternator. No engine leaks and performs fantastic. No issue on shifting or anything else. Just a regular maintenance. AMS oil every 4000 miles, and 93 octane and it goes. I love it. Always Audi owner.

Great car, super fun to drive. Plenty of torque at normal rpm range and lots of grip around the corners! Front seats are plush and comfy although rear seating is tight. Car is equipped with power everything; mirrors, sunfoof, windows, seats, etc... This car's grip, power, and planted feel blew my mind when I first test drove it. Before i had a 2001 passat 2.8, and this thing just runs circles around that. Great car that i would recommend.

I've owned the car since new with 220K miles. It has never been to the dealer or private mechanic except for the initial free maint and the few minor recalls. However, that is not to say it has not had its share of anomalies. Three timing belts, 3 water pumps, 3 batteries, One fuel pump, too many coil packs to count, one temp sensor, two valve cover gaskets and one thermostat. All this may sound horrible and it probably would be if I had no mechanical aptitude or desire to do my own repairs. The car is actually easy to work on. Very modular in the way things come apart. Information is readily available on the Net. I've kept this car because the 1.8T engine block is bullet proof. Update (4/22/16): I still own this car and it now has over 250K miles and still runs strong. The original turbo hasn't had any problems and the engine still has good compression on all 4 cylinders. Synthetic oil is a must for this engine. The clutch was recently replaced and that was a major project. Another fuel pump failed leaving me stranded at the office, again. It seems the "Check Engine" light is always about to illuminate as various high mileage sensors fail. New upgraded brake rotors on all four corners has improved braking. There are a lot of great resources on the web dedicated to these cars and I have been able to find detailed instructions for all issues I've experienced. Overall I'm pleased with this car as it is a well balanced performance sedan. However, if you are not mechanically inclined and don't enjoy the challenge of researching a given problem, order parts and installing the parts, then you're left with paying some mechanic big bucks to keep it road worthy. Update 10/22/16: My A4 now has more than 260k miles on the odo. Original engine and turbo still going strong. Getting close to needing its 4th timing belt service. The latest issues I'm dealing with: New radiator. FM reception is bad due to the small antenna amp near the back window. It's a common problem. Roof liner in the back is getting loose and sagging. Three window regulators have been replaced. The driver seat backing keeps popping out and falling off. Typical stuff for an old car. However, coworkers that ride with me can't believe how well it runs and looks. I often want to have a new car but can't justify it given the fact that this car just keeps going. One just has to stay on top of all the annoying little things that need attention.

stay away!

This car is a serious driving machine. It is not meant to be garaged or driven on Sunday's to church. Much worse driven leisurely. This car is a monster and I did nothing to the engine. The only thing I added was a K & N filter to replace the factory one which in effect added another 15 hp simply because of the additional air coming in. From the moment you turn the car on you can hear the engine which to me was like music to my ears. I drove this car to the limit and had more than enough fun doing it. If I had to put it in 6th gear I was over a 100MPH easily. The highway drive was phenomenal. Man what a car. I bought it with 30k and trade it at 102k. Perfect in every sense of the word.

Much like the other reviews, this car was fabulous from an interior fit and finish perspective, but something was always breaking and it was always costly; I had wiper linkage seize up which was over $300, H.I.D light (dipped headlight) which was $300, and many more. It seemed like everything that had an issue it was $300 or more. There were also odd electrical gremlins with the radio and sunroof (sunroof was blamed on a potentiometer, and the radio was blamed on lithium grease in the door connectors). I got great gas mileage on this car but overall it's a great car if you can afford the pricey repairs. - 1.8t six speed automatic, fwd model

The 2002 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro was fun to drive and great in the snow but the repairs killed the bank! They were so expensive and something was always going wrong with the car. I wouldn't suggest buying one or any Audi for that matter unless you are willing to put thousands into the car! Buyer beware!

Bought this car almost two years ago from an Audi dealership. Sadly, the engine has failed due to the infamous oil sludge build-up issue in the 1.8T engine. Car was always maintained at Audi dealer. The car is beautiful...but it will be moving on to greener pastures with someone who would like to put a new engine in it. Timing belt also had to be replaced, ignition coils, etc. Too many recalls for "Truth in Engineering", Audi.

I get up to 36 mpg on the Interstate at 70, average 27 total including around town, uses no oil between 5000 mile changes, BE SURE to use synthetic and change it as the turbo is hard on oil, change the CVT every 50K, everything works like brand new on this car, no wind leaks, no rattles, no rust, no squeaks. Change the timing belt every 100K, brakes last 50K plus, has original shocks and they are still good.

Bought that Audi 4 months ago, 3k miles and 3000 dollars I spend for keeping it running. Oil leak, pump(timing belt), catalytic, heater problems, ignition coils...and some more...14 - 15mpg in a city. It looks really great, but i'm afraid to drive it, anything could break anytime...

I purchased this car with 57k miles 2 years ago. Now I have 84k and I only had a few problems. Power steering fluid was leaking and engine speed sensor and also my moonroof won't stay open. I enjoy driving the car especially in the winter when there's snow on the ground! It's fun! I haven't had a major problem but I am scared coz someone I know has the same exact car and his timing belt broke at 85k. It is not a cheap car to fix nor maintain but I try my best.

I originally bought the 5sp. manual Audi A4 1.8t used with 95,000 miles on the odometer. 15 minutes after driving it away from the dealer, the car nearly broke down, so we drove it back and they replaced an engine coil and all was fine. I went about 10,000 miles with an oil change every 3k miles, and one day when I started it up the engine was acting funny and the check engine and oil light came on, indicating that there were signs of oil sludge buildup, which I read is quite common in the 1.8t, due to design flaw. Now, the radio acts up. However I love this car regardless. Such a fun, attractive, luxurious little car.

Well it looks like I see a trend here. The 1.8T seem to have reliability issues while the 3.0 seem to run strong. I have owned mine for a year and love it. It's my second Audi, my first being an 80Q that I put 300k miles on. I will say that these cars require your attention. By that I mean don't skimp on maintenance. If there are issues, fix them IMMEDIATELY or it can get very expensive (i.e. ignore replacing a $25 coil pack and you could spend $1000 on a new cat). I will also say you need to keep the interior conditioned, it doesn't like being left to dry out on hot days.

I leased my A4 because I wasn't sure I would like driving a stick after a lot of years of automatics but this car changed all that. It has been a fantastic performer in all kinds of weather conditions and having a stick takes me back to when I was 16. I liked the A4 so much, I bought it outright and bought a 2 year warranty extension from the dealer. Had a couple of repairs made under the warranty but overall I have no complaints with the cars reliability up to this point with 58K miles on it. I got everything available except Bose audio and Xenon headlights. Heated seats are great in winter and very comfortable. This is the best car I ever owned.. and I've owned 11 different cars.

I've put a steady 12K a year on this car in a mix of city & freeway driving, up to the 75K I have now. After the 4- year lease was up, which coincided with the 50K-mile warranty, I bought the car outright and on a hunch bought a 70K- mile extended warranty. Great hunch! It paid for itself twice over, but now that it has expired I'm dreading the next major expense and wondering what it will be. Though I still love the vehicle, its looks & ride, it may be time to move on before the pit of mechanical-breakdown hell opens up. One amazing point: At 75K miles I have never needed new brakes thanks to careful driving and downshifting rather than braking at every opportunity (though I will soon)

This is my second Audi (prev 4000CS) and am pleased with the way the car has performed. I first bought the auto in Seattle and had shipped to Europe (wanted US specs) and had it up to 128 mph. It drove flawless on the Autostrata! I purchased with the Phatbox and so I can enjoy my MP3s. The leatherette seats hold up better than the real leather seats my friend purchased with his Audi A4. Only big issue is that you must change the extended oil religeously with the turbo motor as it will cook the oil in the return pipe and cause the warning light to come on. It's a costly fix so beware. Overall the car is joy to drive when I can get away from my wife. Economical yet has power. Love it!

My Audi A4 was recently totalled. Since its gone, I can fully appreciate what I had. Exterior design was so much so that I didn't want to trade it in for a newer model. The engine lagged a little at slower speeds, but remained smooth and controllable at higher speeds, including quick turns. Seating was good. Heated and light dimming mirrors were a bonus. Many, hard to find features were a bonus as well. This car was my Silver Bullet. I had normal wear issues, but they were expected. No electrical issues to report. The moonroof was quiet and the all around heated seats, power up and down windows made everyone comfortable. Looking to by another A4 or A6 soon.

My A4 was great under warranty, too bad that expired at 50,000 miles. Lately it's cost about $600 a month just to keep it running, and I've only got 90,000 miles on it. Oh and the dealership just told me I needed to replace the timing belt ($1,350) when I took it in to get checked out for the class action suit against Audi. So needless to say I will never buy another Audi agian or ever recommend anyone buy one.

I was hesitant to purchase another VW built car after the dismal experience I had with my 1999 VW Passat but I went ahead and purchsed a 2002 Audi Quattro A4. I am very happy with the car. I drive my cars hard and put at least 20k miles/year commuting to work and I have yet to experience any major problems. The car handles great on the highway and in third gear at 3000rpm, there isn't many cars she cannot pass. The secret to keeping these cars in great shape is to find a reputable mechanic who knows and works on Audi cars daily. Knowing that I drive my cars hard i take it in the shop about every two months for a checkup. I was also prudent and purchased the 100k extended warranty.

This is the first Audi that I've owned and have been nothing but satisfied with this car and Audi. The car looks great on the interior and exterior and is a great value for the money. Not to mention, it is fun to drive, gets decent gas mileage and is incredibly safe. I was in an accident in this car where someone hit me in the passenger door when running a red light. The car was damaged but I was able to get out completely unharmed. A friend was in a similar accident and her car was totaled and she had back injuries. This car is safe, fun, and all about luxury.

After 45K miles, my 2002 Audi A4 1.8T (now at 53K miles) began to require very expensive repairs that I never needed for other vehicles I owned with over 100k miles. I had to replace the phlange that connected the coolant system to the engine, the steering rack and pinion, the windshield/headlight washing fluid pump and motor, and the dealer says that I need to soon replace engine gaskets. I do not know much about the mechanics of cars, but from my experience, it is unusual that such major repairs would be required on a vehicle that still has relatively low mileage and is owned by someone who is very diligent with all of the routine maintenance. Wish I had purchased the extended warranty!

We bought this car thinking it was going to be reliable. After 2 years we had to replace the engine, now at 100,000 miles we need a new transmission. It has been one thing after the other and I will never buy an Audi ever again. Nobs all wear or fall off, interior tears, head lights burn out every 2 seconds. Not only have I spent tons of money having to repair the car I want to get rid of it and it isn't worth anything, horrible resale. Bad bad bad, that is all I have to say!

This is the third Audi for me. I bought my first one used w/60,000 miles- an Audi 90 and donated it with 173,000 on it. It was great. I bought an Audi 90 brand new and put 194,000 miles on it. Another great driving car. Now I have an Audi A4 3.0 Quattro 6sp. manual and I love it. It had 32,000 miles on it when I bought it and not a scratch on it. I love the summer package (wide wheels) but they ride rough. The winter tired were great for Ohio snow.

This car is cute and fun. But don't drive it too much. By 2007, with all the repairs we've already done and those still coming up, this car has depreciated like a rock and we're left holding the bag, wondering when our next $2,000 repair bill will come up. The overcomplicated German design leaves even the smallest repairs costing more than they should, and the benefit - our cute car - has been blackened by our repair bills.

We've owned this baby since its birth. The paint and fit and finish are still like new. The 1.8T quattro w 5spd manual has plenty of power and is great in snow. No real issues but we're on our 3rd set of ignition coils ($400 ea time). Our horn kept shorting out until they finally fixed the bracket (5 repairs later). The power steering fluid has a slow leak and ANY routine repair is pricey ($83 to replace 2 burnt out tail light bulbs!), but the ride and handling are still superb. We still love our A4 and it's just like new after 5+ years. Would highly recommend this car.

Loads of electrical gremlins. Spontaneously the alarm used to go off when I first got it. Radio problems, speakers cutting in and out, tweeter still busted. Dealers want $300 to replace a battery, recently paid $475 to diagnose and replace 3 feet of vacuum hose for a check engine light. Brakes were shot in 36,000 miles (my other car was good for 50,000 so it is not my driving) and tires the same. It was fun to drive when I bought it. Should have bought reliability. Maybe mine was just a lemon but I would not shop Audi/VW again.

The driver's experience is clearly what the engineers had in mind when designing this car. The engine delivery and transmission shifts are silky smooth. The turbo layout turns a usually puny 1.8 litre 4 banger into a fun and almost organic feeling torquey little animal! Audi has designed the drivetrain well. The interior and exterior both have the same concept in mind. Clean and sexy lookin. Some of my friends chuckle at me getting the wagon but I love it. It's just way to versitile to pass up. I play hockey and have a Big German Shepherd. I need the space. The other day I had three big dogs in the back and they all had room to lie down and relax on our trip.

The mechanic had to order the tranny from Germany as they are on back order in the US. The transmissions are about $7000 a piece. Thank God for extended warranties!! Buyer beware.

I love this car!! After owning it for 4 1/2 years, I still feel the same as when I purchased it new. It has the sports suspension which handles very well. This vehicle is the first automatic transmission I have owned, therefore, having the CVT transmission has been wonderful. There is no hesitation when going through the gears upon acceleration and is smooth as can be. The seat is comfortable and the ride is quiet. The stiffer sports suspension is exactly what one expects from BMW. This car has had NO electrical or engine problems and is very reliable. A new dealership which opened closer to my home (after owning my car for 2 years) is top notch; offering car washes, and prompt service.

I bought my Audi from Audi USA (used with 3k). I bought it over the internet and shipped to Europe (wanted US Spec Car). I drove the car up to 128 MPH and it ran flawlessly. Hugged the road and driving at 100 MPH felt like going 55. I did have a problem with the gas cap sensor that Audi corrected. Overall the car has been great and provides super gas mileage while providing umph when you need it. It has the normal turbo lag but overall very pleased. Back seat could be a touch larger. Very glad I got the 1.8T motor over the 3.0. I had 3 series BMW before this one and prior had the Audi 4000CS. Not knocking the BMW but find the Audi more of a joy to drive. Enjoy!!!

This is a very comfortable, stable and fun car. I am a small woman and the car fits me perfectly. It has all the bells and whistles and a great highway ride. There is some lack of power initially at low speeds but the engine quickly responds. My major complaint is that the computer system is overly sensitive there have been many instances of warning lights coming on. I say that the car is "over enginered". I have had the car into the dealer on many more occasions than I think is reasonable for warning lights. Sometimes there was something actually wrong but many times the computer just needed to be reset.

This car rocks! Handling, performance, utility, it has it all. 3.0 is much better than the 1.8 turbo with lag o'plenty. The A4 Avant is stylish and very well built, and Audi as a company does it right. Their maintenance program and professionals are top notch. Car is very high tech. They can program desired functionality within minutes at service, like auto door locking, windows pan-tilt when in reverse, etc. Love the memory seats and mirrors and dual climate control with heated seats.

Overall I'd own another Audi. Glad I didn't get the 3.0 as it has more pickup power at the start but about the same as the 1.8T once you get going.

I had to make a new car purchase quickly after my car got totaled. I was looking at Infinitis and Acuras, when I cam across the A4 by accident. In short, its a great car that is fun to drive, looks great, and does everything it needs to (transport people, stuff, whatever). The turbo hurts fuel efficiency, but not terribly. Otherwise, I don't think I could have found a better car for my needs and wants.

This car has been in the shop more than I have had it at my house. I am currently out of warranty and nobody wants to work on this car so I'm forced to pay through the nose at the dealer. Every headlamp, side marker, tail lamp has burned out twice sinced I've owned the vehicle. The vaccuum hoses have busted, the w/s wiper motor burned out, the cd player quit working, the computer went bad, it eats tires like crazy and the list goes on and on. Besides that it is a great vehicle? Prior to this vehicle I owned an Acura and traded it in at 90k miles and never had any issues except for replacing the tires. I will definitely go back to the Acura line and would not recommend Audi to anyone.

In my 30+ years of driving, I've owned Corvairs and AMC products that would be considered "problem cars", but nothing matches the unreliability of an Audi. I purchased both a 2001 and 2002 A4 and have become very familiar with the local wrecker companies. The 2002 is now having it's 4th engine installed (after only 50,000 miles). The stereo system has been replaced three times. We traded in the 2001 at a loss after being towed three times for coil issues. Stay away from Audi! This is the worst car I've ever owned, including the 1964 Corvair I paid $100 for in 1974!

Strengths: Stong 3.0 liter is a joy to drive, Tiptronic adapts to your driving mood and style. The interior is beautiful and funtional. This design still looks as fresh as it did 3 years ago. Weaknesses: Bose Stereo is not up to the level of the rest of this car, the passenger seat is not comfortable (so say my wife & son). The interior has not worn all that well. Reliability has been OK, the coils failed the same week that I received the recall notice. The bolt holding a pulley onto the engine fell out , an oil seal failed which left me stranded. Conclusions: I think that the A-4 is a better built car than my wifes M-B 240 AWD. I'm ordering a new A-6.

Loved my A4 2.8 sedan - but strollers & golf clubs just didn't go well together in the trunk. Found my car thru the great audit certified site and had it shipped. Audi certified program is one of the best out there. Love the service & all problems to date corrected without jumping thru hoops. As for the car - a blast to drive, looks great inside and out. as a coworker told me - "your car LOOKS fast" - and it is. Perfect alternative to those small suv's - all wheel drive piece of mind for our northeast winters, and room inside and ontop for your "toys".

The 1.8T has great torque. Could be more powerful, especially with Quattro drive, but gas mileage is great. I switched to synthetic oil and larger capacity filter and have been getting over 30 mpg highway. Car has tons of great features and electronics. Safety is excellent. To illustrate My best friend has a 01 Civic, over two years, he has paid $19-$29 for 14 oil changes. $690 in repairs and tune-up cost and $60 for tire rotation. I have paid $109 for two rotations after Three years! The service plan is flawless. Everything is free, oil, brakes, anything except gas. Free maintenance for 50K miles, how can you go wrong? That said, It does need attention but every car does there is no such thing as a maintenance free car..

Aside from having defective Spark Modules which required two separate service visits (one with only 63 miles on the car) and a failed Transmission Control Module, this car has been 100% reliable and an absolute joy to own and drive. I can't understand why there aren't more of them on the road, it's a great Anti-SUV! With my snow tires on in winter I run circles around any of them and get WAY better gas mileage, too. The car is also perfect for long trips, just eats up the miles in comfort and returns 25MPG at 75MPH! Again, no SUV can touch that.

My wife and I bought this car a month ago, and we love it already. You rarely see A4 Avants, unlike the ubiquitous BMW/Volvo/VW wagons. It's also a superb value, especially Certified. I laugh at SUV drivers who paid a lot more for terrible handling, fuel economy, and in some cases, less room. It will not overwhelm you with power, but it's got plenty of zip for a family car, and Quattro ensures excellent handling. It's not big, but it's very comfortable. The interior lighting is great- at night, EVERY control lights up so you don't have to fumble in the dark. It’s a really intelligently designed car with great attention to detail. Very highly recommended!

To the person who complained that the Sport Suspension wasn't a "luxury" ride... DUH! If you want a luxury ride you don't order a Sport Suspension. The Audi A4 Avant handles as well as my wife's BMW (maybe better) and is plenty fast (especially using the tiptronic... which I personally like better than a manual). This Audi is a nightmare. I had a 1999 2.8Q, it was a great car. I wish I had it back. This car has spent a cumlative 2.5 months at the dealer since Dec. 02.A brief list of mechanical issues, ignition coil, 3 Clutches, 2 windshield wiper motors,a incredibly squeaky drivers seat, trunk latch failing while vehicle was being driven, twice. malfunctioning factory cd changer. Audi customer service is non-existent and rude. The car broke down out of state and the local dealer refused to fix it, because they didnt sell the car. I just bought the car certified used for the wife and I'm actually considering getting an SUV for her so that I can have the Audi for myself. I love it that much. The Audi engineers put so much thought into what they design that I'm still being surprised by neat little features. My car came with the sport package and, like what was mentioned in an earlier review, the 1.8 is a bit underpowered for the extra handling. Love the A4 for its looks, both interior and exterior, and truly is a fun car to drive. It's comfortable yet sporty, with a tight ride. Just try to do doughnuts in the snow - this thing grips like a vice. The Bose system is awesome. Had an oil leak at 25K, the recall for the coils, door lock and horn stopped working and both needed to be replaced, and now there's a noticeably rough idle and strong gas/exhaust smell that appeared out of nowhere, but dealer says nothing found. Not a long term keeper in my opinion, but an excellent 3 year or 4 year car for the ride, handling and status.

1st. The Audi Dealership is hands above all the others in this class i.e. I had a bad experience at a Subaru Dealership and a local VW Dealership. So far, we love the Audi. The 3.0 is fun to smooth, fun to drive and fast. All the little extras are nice. Both my wife and I love this car. We looked at alot of cars and for the price, this car rocks. The certified pre-owned warranty is great at 100G. I would recommend this car to anyone. Note, we are coming from a Subaru that started breaking down after 100G. Time will tell. Zoom Zoom

This car is fun to drive, espically with the CVT. Seating takes some getting used to. The climate control system IS A FAILURE. When cold outside it is hot inside. When the temperature setting is 64 deg.F the cabin stays at 74. This is the LOWEST temperature available. Audi service has tried to fix it at least 5 times and finally concluded that it is "Operating within specification" since ALL of the cars do the same thing. All of them are wrong according to the mechanic. Also experienced many other failures that have been fixed.

I work for an VW/Audi dealer so the maintenance "issues" are taken care of immediately, however I did not appreciate the coil going at 3000 miles. I was told the "vender" was having trouble with the new design. I see many more Audi's come in on flatbeds than VW's. One thing I can definitely say is it's the best car ever in snow which it why I bought the car and also for safety. I have seen many a customer who has literally walked away from accidents that in any other cars would not have. Quattro is a very good system and please do not let anyone tell you that the BMW is the same, it is not ask any mechanic they'll tell you the difference.

Although not as quick as the BMW 3 series, but just as refined as the Mercedes Benz C Class, my 2002 A4 3.0 Quattro is a perfect vehicle for my 40 mile reverse highway commute. Depending on your mood, leave it to the plush interior and sound system, or the "Quattro-supreme" road manners to keep you grinning from ear to ear. My only complaint is a lack of low end torque from the V6 engine. I've had this car for 6 months, and still get a kick out of driving to and from work. JF

Car has all options .Never again!!!For a car in this price range to have so many problems.Coil pack failure (stranded),brake failure(stranded)horn failure(needed for inspection, took 7 months to get)and many other problems.Dealer acts like I'm bothering him with my problems(they left fog light trim off and wouldn't return my calls)so Audi USA says to drive 60 miles to the next nearest dealer for future service.Like many others, I'm leary about taking this car on an extended trip.Glad I kept my old 1999 Olds Intrigue. It's my daily driver and has never let me down.

After 20 years of driving strictly American cars, finally decided to test drive an Audi, and fell in love immediately. BMWs are excellent, but I felt like I was spending $5000 for the brand name. The A4 impresses with its power, solidity, quiet, and smoothness. Even more impressive: the interior, quite simply the nicest car interior I've ever seen. Little technology flourishes abound but don't get in the way (example: twist the mirror knob to the right and put the car in reverse, and the right mirror tilts down to show you the curb you're parallel parking toward). Overall, superb!

so ive owned my A4 for about a year and a half, and now im on edmunds shopping for a decent used one. i consider myself a demanding driver and as a performance vehicle, it's a great ride. but in the shop 14 times over the past year is insane! clutch, suspension issues, ignition coils... the worst was being a center console (electronics) flake out that left me using a loner for a week. CONSIDERING aftermarket chip? risk screwing that powertrain warranty and you'll have the sweetest looking lawn ornament in town. i wanted this thing to work cause its sweet looking package. but ive learned much more about cars than i cared to through this headache.

Overall this car is great. The design of the interior and exterior is second to none. Minimalist with depth is the best way I can describe it. It is truly the car's best feature. The seats are tight and spartan (base vinyl package), which does not bother me but annoyed others. The CVT drive is smooth as silk at speed but off the line it can jump. I have learned to control the acceleration better though I suppose since it rarely happens now. The low end torque leaves something to be desired but once the turbo kicks in you are off to the races, i.e. 1 second after you hit the accelerator.

When I purchased this car for 39,000.00 I thought I was buying a reliable car. I quickly learned that this car is anything but reliable. Thus far the blinkers went out, the windshield wiper blades broke, the sterio died, the coolent hoses were leaking the starting coils went out and the entire dash board system failed so the car read 140 mph all the time. Now my check engine light came on last night and the car was in for service 1000 miles ago. I am now looking to trade my car in on a much more reliable car like a Honda Accord.

Bought car new, traded a '99 2.8Q, had it for a week and had to return for a clutch"adjustment",they actually replaced the clutch. First snow storm my windshield wipers failed completely @ 2000 miles. The driver side seat squeaks like crazy, the trunk never closes correctely, and now @ 11000 miles the sunroof sticks when it closes, very fun when it rains. Oh for potential and current owners avoid the front end bra. I had mine dealer installed, it flops like crazy over 80 miles an hour, it will destroy your paint job, dealer says it's just the way it is. It looks cool though it does'nt work, kind of like the car it was designed for.

Since the A4's introduction to the US I have wanted one and now I do. The new body style is aggressive and masculine which is indicative of its power. The 1.8T is phenominal in its pickup speed and at times I feel as if I am in the Daytona 500, well maybe not to that extent but you get my drift. I did test drive the 02 Passat and Jetta in order to make a wise choice that the A4 was for me. The Passat did not even have a chance. The sporty feel and tight steering were not there and the A4 had it all. The Jetta was a strong contender with the A4, however, the A4 won me over with its robust exterior and the luxurious interior.

I have owned many cars in my 39 years of life: 3 American, 6 Japanese, and 5 German. I can say w/o a doubt that the German made cars are the best. I've owned 3 BMW's, 1 Mercedes and my new 03 Audi A4. I can honestly say that no one builds a car like the Germans. Of the lot Mercedes ranks 3rd, BMW 2nd and Audi is #1 as being the Best Car I have Ever Owned. The Mercedes was a good car to drive but it was always in the shop for something. BMW ranks a close 2nd to the Audi, but it can't compare to the fine int. and attention to detail that Audi pays to its cars. In my book Audi is the Gold Standard that all other Car companies should be measured.

Power is smooth and even, brakes strong, fuel mileage very good. The difference between the A4 and the BMW 325 is night and day, with the Audi taking honors.

I've owned the car for less than a month, but right away some things are apparent. Biggest issue is lack of low- end power - get a manual and this thing will DIE starting on an uphill incline unless you're a master with the clutch. You can't go above 5mph in first gear; ridiculous. Silver lining though - increased fuel efficiency, and once you have momentum the turbo can really kick in. Also, Audis start to fall apart after 30,000 miles... particularly with all the extra gadgetry that it comes equipped with. No surprises here - just buy the extended warranty.

All in all, the car has lived up to its ratings by the automotive press. Acceleration from a standstill is not the greatest, until the turbocharger kicks in... then it feels a lot stronger and reacts. The sport suspension handles very well, but the agressive tires are fairly noisy, especially at highway speeds. The center console does restrict leg movement and can be a little uncomfortable for a taller driver. The seating is firm and may be considered stiff by some.

I looked at BMWs, Volvos, Saabs, etc., for style, safety, and performance. The A4 has it all. It's a toy and it's a statement. For safety, I don't think it can be beat. On my way home tonight, a Jeep Cherokee ran a red light. It was rainy, the roads were slick, I was at speed and yet the Audi prevaled. I braked and swerved; my A4 steered right around that Jeep like I was dancing with butterflies. I am fast becoming one of Audi's best salespersons.

After one year the car is back to the shop about once a month. Once it was in the shop for a minor fender bender and the shop still can't get it fixed after 4 trips and trust me it was a minor accident. I have been taking it to a dealer in Charleston, WV. The support and repair for the car sucks. The dealer even offered to trade the car and then offered me $14,000 less for the car than I payed for it after only one year. Don't contact Audi with complaints they don't have any power or desire to deal with their dealerships. On my way home from having a light bulb changed the whole taillight fell out and all Audi could say is they would document it.

The current A4, in my opinion, is one of the most beautiful cars on the road. It's a head turner, it is one of a few cars that really stands out from the rest. It is also a blast to drive, the V6 engine performs well and sounds great when driving it hard. The Quattro AWD system gives this car a tremendous amount of road holding grip, which is great for bad weather or having a bit if fun.

I have a fairly loaded 2002 A4 3.0 quattro with 5-speed Tiptronic: sport, luxury, Cold weather, xenons. All-in-all this has been a satisfactory car. Fit and finish was excellent. I have had a few niggling issues: horns had to be replaced at 20,000 mi (horns, whatever?!), power steering fluid mysteriously disappears (once, only). The Tiptronic could be a little smoother on the upshift, especially in low gears. Acceleration is a little weak, even for an automatic.

The ride is sweet and the engine sound is like impeccable. I luv it except for a few things: 1. i would rather the tiptronic controls on the steering wheel be for audio instead. I think we all would change the track, volume, or station more often than when we use the tip. 2. Pwrseats should be standard on an entry-lux car like this. 3. The garage-door openers should still work even withOUT the key in the ignition. 4. The windshield washer tank had a crack in it and the car is barely 8 months old. These are just small quips, cuz this car still turns heads everytime i'm driving it and i can still keep up with most of the ppl in the street.

I bought this car after looking at a new 325, a used M3, and a Lexus IS300. I've put 16,000 miles on this car and the only issues I've had came from the coil-pack problem that seemed to plague some of the 2002's. Both times, the dealer did whatever they could to get the car fixed. Besides that, this car has been a blast to drive! It looks and drives great! The 1.8T could use a little more low- end power, but I love the great gas mileage I get (avg. 29.5/mpg). By far, the best car I've owned. I would like a little more power, but I guess I'll have to save up and place an order for the new S4.

Bought this car for my wife, who LOVES it. I love the styling, superb interior quality, versatility of the wagon. Problems include the well-known coilpack failure which completely disabled the car requiring flatbed towing to the dealership after 7,000 miles. Not what I would expect in a car of this caliber. Now we are hesitant to take this practically brand new car on extended road trips because we are worried about breaking down. Because of short supply, the dealership will not replace all of the coilpacks under warranty, only if they fail (and leave you stranded!) Rims have been a headache (see Suggested Improvements, below)

I've had my 2002 A4 Quattro for one year. On the plus side, the car is fun to drive, comfortable and looks great. However the negatives quickly overwhelm any positive aspects of this car. In the first year the car was immobilized for 29 days at the dealer waiting for a new ignition coil. In addition I've had 2 radios replaced and many minor electrical problems. I've lost all confidence in reliability of the car and prefer our 5 year old, 88,000 mile Subaru Outback for longer trips.I hate to think what problems I'll have after the warranty expires. I doubt if I will ever buy another Audi.

Every time it snows(which is what I bought the car for)the windshield wipers freeze or the motor locks up and the wipers remain stuck right in the line of vision. I am also experiencing crazy electrical problems, I will turn off the esp and my turn signal will activate and my headlights will shut off. Now there is a re-call for the ignition coil. My A4 is a 2003 Model, Denim Blue. In this color, the car is truly one of a kind. I have yet to see another one on the crowded Long Island streets. And at $26,000 no other car came close in features (leather, 17" wheels, 6-CD in dash, auto climate etc), style, and handling. 30 more horses would be nice, but the 5-speed helps overcome this. I'm only 2000 miles in, so hopefully the reliability is as good as my 99 Passat, which was trouble free for 60,000 miles.

The A4 is the most underrated sport sedan out there. It's too introverted for its own good. After 10 months of ownership my fondness for the A4 continues to grow. Like the quiet child in the corner, only time and effort brings out the personality within. The A4 is loaded with solid engineering, rides like a vault on four wheels, and tackles twisty roads with amazing alacrity. If you think a certain motor works in Bavaria is the only place that knows sport sedans, do yourself a favor and give an A4 a test. Sometimes the quiet kid is the most interesting.

Overall I like the car, but 2 bad ignition coils have really spoiled the experience. Audi Customer "Care" refused to replace all 4 coils on the 2nd occurence. This is a major problem with the 2001-2002 models. From what I have read, very few 2003 have had the problem. Audi's Customer service is poor at best.

Have had a wonderful time with this car. Looks like a beauty (inside, out), is immensly fun to drive and is pretty well priced for its class - its tough to find a well engineered all-wheel-drive sporty sedan with great interiors for around $30,000 Have had the car for over a year now - with absolutely no mechanical problems so far. The only time I needed to take it to the dealer was for its 10,000 mile check-up - which incidentally was completely free and covered under the standard maintenance plan

I'm disappointed with the 02 A4. The exterior styling is great, but the interior is drab and monotone. I've had many problems in 6 months. Twice I had it towed to the dealership with igition coil problems. The cruise control and windshield washers also had to be fixed. The engine revs too high, even at low speeds and the car could use a 6th gear. The road noise, vibrations, rattle & squeaks are excessive and the overall build quality of the car doesn't compare to that of my '99 A4. The seats are also narrow and hard. On the plus side, the all-wheel drive is great. The handling is impressive when the car is driven hard on winding backroads.

I've had my A4 3.0 Quattro 6 speed for almost 2 months and I love the car. The only option I got is the sports package but the car comes loaded stock. I love the A4's handling, the Quattro shines when the roads are wet. The power is well suited to the car, not the fastest in it's class but it achieves a very good balance. My last car was a Miata, the A4 has much of the sports car feel but with the back seat and all of the comfort items you would expect from a German luxury model. And the A4 is gorgeous inside and out.

Problems included: The rear defogger didn't work and the rear window had to be replaced. When it rained, water would get trapped in the door wells and gush out onto our shoes when the doors were opened. The dealership couldn?t fix this. Audi customer service simply didn't care, and was often rude. An Audi service manager admitted to us that Audi was aware of this issue but had no solution. Audi's official position was that the car was "performing as engineered". We recently noticed knocks and rattles and an overall loss of performance. The dealership determined that the entire transmission had to be replaced. At 12,500 miles, we had had enough and traded it in on a Passat.

This ia very nice looking car, and apparently well finished. But I have taken my car three times to the garage during the first year and it is still there. If you need a part for your car, beg for it. It will take more than what you expect. If you open the moon roof, then a few noises will compete with your fine stereo system. If you drive at low revolutions, then be willing to deal with some annoying vibrations. And not to mention the weird shifts in the transmission.

In March of 02 I traded in my 99 Civic SI for a 02 Audi A4 Quattro, Dolphin Grey, sports package. My oh my, I'll never go back to the more economical Hondas (though they were great!). This car is fun to drive, and get lots of compliments. I've put it through some rigerous driving tests (my my nature, I'm a tough but good driver) and this car has performed very very well. The seats are very comfy and after a 5 hour drive, my back felt great! The AWD and ESP work well together in rain and sandy roads. The interior and exterior are both very stylish and well designed.

I special ordered this vehicle and waited 4 months for it to arrive. I never had a chance to test drive and A4 Avant 3.0 6 speed manual with sport package. It is too small, very uncomfortable, rough ride, and the most difficult stick shift I have ever owned. Some of my most favorite features are not even offered on the car. I would love to get rid of it. I have extreame buyers remorse. I get sick every time I drive the car because of the rought ride and the amount I paid for the car.

This a great car and for the first eight months I absolutely loved the performance in this car. Then I bought my wife a Turbo S Beetle which has the same engine and I got to realize that this car's weight counts against having the 1.8T motor. The A4 has a lot of turbo lag under 3000 rpm which you don't feel in the Beetle with the same engine. I have a manual shift and quattro and it has the best roadholding in the world. Awesome motorcar. Next time, I'll go with the 3.0 or the S4, although at least this way I don't get the speeding fines I would with the 3.0

Thinking about getting a bimmer? Well, forget about it and instead test drive the Audi A4 - quattro. This is a great sports/luxury sedan all rolled up into one. Driving around town, you feel a sense of security and passion. The only other car that I enjoyed test driving was an Infiniti G35. However, it costs $4K to $6K more and did not offer an all wheel drive capability. Anyway, I am very happy with my choice and would recommend it to others that are seriously considering a Bimmer as your next vehicle (oh and one more thing. Did you know that Bimmer sells over 100,000 3-series a year - how exclusive is that?)

BMW inline 6 2. power seats w/ memory. no excuse for this not being available on the 1.8T. -AUDI WINS: 1.styling (this is close). 2.interior. we got a dolphin gray exterior and a "platinum" interior. Beautiful. 3. various features...in-dash 6-CD changer, standard. dual-zone climate control. 4. Price. (diff of $3000) 5. 4-yr free maintenance. however, BMW has matched this for their 2003 models

And since I had the "new car bug", I decided to get the amulet red 1.8T. No regrets though I was coming from a VW Passat V6 - the 1.8T on the A4 has enough pick up as far as I am concerned. Only 600 miles so far, but no problems at all (knock on wood).

I just ordered my 2003 A4 1.8T Quattro with the manual transmission. I said yes to just about all of the options, including: Bose stereo, sport package, premium package, xenons, etc. I previously owned a '99 A4 1.8T. The 20 more horsepower of the current model paired with the manual tranny makes for a much quicker car. You may want to consider getting the 17 in wheels with all season radials instead of the sport package. Still a little extra grip for performace but smoother, more competent ride in inclement weather. Highly reccomend to all.

Once I sat down in the A4, I was absolutely impressed with the striking interior. All the dials and displays are thoughtfully placed...sans the front cupholder. Nice aluminum trimming, goes well with a dark interior. The engine is smooth and silky, quite refined for a 4 cylinder. Acceleration is slightly anemic, but adequate for commuting. Oh, one caveat with the sound system. The less-honest dealerships might tweak the non-Bose system to get you to prefer the Bose system. Know that the standard sound system with 10 speakers w/ subwoofer and 150 watts hold's its own just nicely. I have heard complaints about electrical problems on previous models.

The handling in this car is unlike any other car I've driven. The BMW 3-Series 4 wheel drive doesn't compare. The car rides a little bit rough at lower speeds and its pick-up is good but not great, but where this car really excels is on the open road. Extremely tight handling at higher speeds, this car is extremely fun to drive. One major drawback for me has been that the Check Engine light will not go off despite repeated trips to the dealership.

I have a 3.0 Tiptronic Quattro. Ebony inside and out. Leather too. This is my second A4, and I must say that the 2002 model is 100% improved from the previous generation. I thought the previous generation was great, but the 2002 model feels soooo solid and well built. It is better in every regard. The fuel economy ratings are right on target; I consistently get 25 MPG on the highway and a little over 18 in the city. I'm not faulting the ratings, I just wish the fuel economy was a little better. I think the front seats are a little firm, but that is just my taste. Perhaps they'll soften up as time goes on.

The a4 and the 3 series seem to be in somewhat of a battle to be THE german car in the size. Having done a lot of reading on both cars before making any desision, i noticed that all the magazines comparing the two seemed to favor the audi but yet still chose the bimmer? accepting this at face value and driving both cars, you notice both have a lot to offer. 2 advantages to the audi, are, 1)its not the cookie cutter norm. and 2)the car has a personality about it that you instantly connect with. if given a fair chance i feel that audi should rank higher buck for buck, if it would only get the media recognition it deserved....

The car has awesome handling, looks great, and superb build quality. You get a lot more for your money with the A4 compared to the BMW 3 series. Before test driving I was actually leaning toward a 3 series, but all it took was a test drive and seeing the A4 next to the Bimmer to sway me toward the Audi. Actually after the test drive, I didn't even consider the BMW again.

Gotta get one

I've had the A4 1.8T 5M for two weeks and I'm very happy with it. My first car and my first Audi. It handles really well and is great to look at. I can't wait till the snow falls to really put the Quattro to good use. The standard safety features are plentiful and the trunk space is generous. My main disappointment is the alarm...it's just a beeping noise that sounds like a truck backing up. I'm not convinced that it will deter a thief. The red console lighting is rather bothersome. Blue would be better, like in VW's.

This car far exceeded my expectations and everything I'd read. I didn't think I'd go for one but when I drove the '02 Passat and then the '02 1.8T, I knew that the Audi was for me. Tighter, smaller, quicker, and, yeah, more money. Don't believe what everyone says that the Passat is a better value: drive both to see what suits your driving style, etc. best. Don't get me wrong: my '99 Passat was terrific but this is car is "Wow!" The quality of craftsmanship in this car is incredible.

I was basically down to the A4, IS300, or G35. Would've chosen a 3 Series, but didn't look like too good of a value in comparison. Been driving an IS300 regularly and it's awesome, but didn't want two IS300s. Finally chose the A4 because of quattro, looks, and warranty. So far the car has been great. Handling is good, but not quite as sharp as the 3 Series. Ride is excellent, turbo has surprisingly good torque, engine music readily heard. Tiptronic works great. Road and wind noise is low, and interior shouts quality. Lots of pleasant surprises (lights everywhere, little compartments). Car looks great, especially with 17-inch alloys. Lots fun to drive.

This is my first Audi and its an awsome car, beautiful exerior design, and high quality build. The car feels elegant and sporty. I love the handling and the power of the car and the overall feel of the drive, it feels solid on the highway. I test drove BMW 3 series, Infiniti G35 and this was definitly the winner. I live in San Francisco and you should see how this car handles those steep city hills and driving through the mountain roads of the Bay Area.

I looked at the A4 and the IS300, but went for the A4. I've run up about 1500 miles so far and it drives great. Handling is precise and firm, road feel is just right (with sport package), and power is ample for my driving (don't know about you, but not many chances for 0-60 driving). If design and looks were the only element, this car would be above all else. The only thing I'm not sure of at this point is the reliability. Heard its improving, but will wait to see. Overall, A4 is all I expected and more. The A4 exudes class and quality. Go out and drive one and you'll see what I mean.

I had been in the market for a reliable, safe car for my daughter and found an '01 A-4, 1.8 Turbo. She loves the car! I then decided to look at the '02 Quattro 6 cylinder for my wife. We've already put 12,000 miles on the car and would consider it by far the "funnest" vehicle we've ever owned! My wife does most of the driving of the Audi, and she enjoys the comfort and solid feel. (she washes the car weekly with a diaper!) I think she's pretty safe in the car, and thus far, it's been reliable. Only negative is we were promised "free" service for 48,000 miles. They neglect to tell you that this doesn't include synthetic oil ($33 per change.

Want my Passat GLX back. Great looks. fun to drive. Lots of weird accoutrements in the cabin. Power is adequate. Seat motor was broken, took 3 weeks to repair the seat. Crowded Cockpit. Transmission very unique. Radio reception poor. Difficult for me to get comfortable the way the seat is configured. Not that it really matters but the cupholder is without a doubt the worst feature of the vehicle.

If you are worried about anything regardding this vehicle, don't be for it's a gem. About 1000 miles to date, firm solid quiet ride, great suspension. Quiet on the inside too, except when the Bose is cranked. I was a littleconcerned with the 4 cylinder engine, but will report that the 5 speed gear box lets this go from zero to 60 comfortably. The exterior styling alone is reason enough to buy an A4. I stepped up to the 16" 5-spoke wheels. Looks great! The sport suspension is simply too severe for Ohio roads. Once you get past 1st gear life is wonderful. I still haven't figured out if starting off slow or spilling my coffee is best. This is the most fun-to-drive vehicle I have owned. BMW was too much $$$ and there are too many of them on the road.

Only a week ago, a duck and her ducklings suddently apperared out of nowhere as I was doing 50 mph. I slammed on the brakes and found out what a well-designed, great braking saystem does for you. If I would have done the same on my previous Jeep I would have been all over the road. This baby slowed down fastly but very steady and on a straight line. Perfect.

I had a '99 passat, great car for the money. The '02 version is muched improved. But i wanted to upgrade to a serious sports sedan. Even though the A4 and the passat share the same engines, they are two totally different cars. I tested several sports sedans in this class, the is300, bmw 300 series, TL, and the c-class benz. The only car that came close to the A4 in terms handling/performance was the the bmw 320xi. A4 won over the 320xi due to Audi's superior tiptronic...so much more responsive and smooth vs. the steptronic. The interior is rich looking while the chrome trim and red ambiance lighing separates the A4 from any other car.

We just returned from an 800 mile roundtrip on 29.2 gallons of gas. That's over 28 MPG! The car rides like a bigger car, but handles like a sports car. The 1.8T has plenty of guts, and you know this engine is designed for the Autobahn, as she really purrs at 65, and would love to be unrestrained by the low speed limits on our (US) roads. Seats are very comfortable, and adjustable and our "black beauty" looks really rich.

Bought the car in December in Upstate NY, the next day it snowed..The traction control and ESP are awesome. I would have never made it out of the driveway with my old Volkswagen. I only have a couple complaints. The lack of horsepower (for those with new A4s the HP improves after about 3000 miles) We need the 4.2!!. Not enough leg room on the right side for a tall driver, significant brake fade under hard braking conditions, heavy and cumbersome in hard corners, but, I'm in love with it anyway!! Can't wait for the new S4.

So far this car has been a pleasure to drive. It is fast and lively, especially while in the manual shift mode. The multitronic transmission is sluggish in the automatic shift mode, so having the ability to shift manually saves the day. It is virtually impossible to turn the wheels on Quattro versions, which is good. The sport suspension is taut (perhaps harsh to some) and responsive. Cabin noise is muted. Controls are well placed and the red and white illumination is gorgeous. The leather is top-notch, as is the fit and finish of both the interior and exterior. Audi makes just about the finest interiors I've ever seen. This is one fine German machine!

But at delivery, and in the first few weeks, a number of quality control problems appeared, e.g. gritty paint, heated mirrors don't work, quirky climate control, sunroof rattle, defective key fob, faulty back seat latch, etc. Does not seem the car was properly checked before being shipped.

This car has been an excellent purchase for me. I was looking at Jettas and others of that ilk, but his car is obviously head and shoulders over those. After driving the BMW 325xi for some time, I have to say I like the A4 more! The manageability and infrequency of repairs and even scheduled maintenance make this car a no-brainer decision if you're looking at this price level or even moderately below (because the total cost to own is small).

My favorite car so far!

Why would anyone buy a BMW?

Looked at the BMW 3-series and BMW 5- series, and then ... with some skepticism ... visited the Audi dealer. WOW! The interior is so far superior to anything the BMW 3 offers both in terms of build quality and space, and to get a comparable BMW 5 would cost at least $10,000 more! The interior is plush, sleek, and oozes luxury. Loved the drive with the 6- speed right from the get-go - zippy and responsive. The extras and the bells and whistles on this car made me think of a Bond vehicle - more toys than you can imagine, and that's standard! I LOVE THIS CAR, it's everything I could have asked for in a European luxury sports sedan, and more ... don't forget the AWD!

So far so good

My expectation was average for this car as I had the past generation one. After 3000 miles, notice this car is a great improvement over last. This car is very well built. Transmission is a little notchy but will loosen up over time. Very sure footed on snow and on asphalt.

Before I bought this car, the hype was everywhere in magazines and other published car editorials. I took my 2000 Audi A4 for a service one day, and decided to walk around the showroom to see what the new A4, a Car and Driver 10Best car, is all about. Needless to say, I had the service department stop any work they were doing on my 2000 A4 as I decided to just purchase the 02 A4. I know there are other cars that are faster linearly, but the A4's V6 CVT was smooth. You have to get used to the gearless transmission, but this thing taps 60 mph in 6.8 seconds. You couldn't do better in a manual. On top of that, interior is top notch.

If this car had the reliability of Lexus (which by the way most German cars don't), then it would be that much better. At about 5k miles, I have had to bring the car in for minor electrical glitches, not uncommon for European cars. Other than that, this car is a dream, puts a smile on my face. The sport package gives a slightly harsh ride but handles potholes and bumps rather firmly if not well.

Value to feature content incredible like std in dash 6 disc cd, subwoofer, stability system, dual zone a/c, 6 airbags. Got sports pckg plus sunroof. Rides a bit harsh when road is rough, other than that, I get close to 500 miles on 17 gal tank, and an incredible smooth and quiet ride (3k rpm at 70mph). Can't believe this is only a 1.8 engine. My former BMW can't touch refinement and price/value ratio.

This is a great car. Handles well, looks great and is comfortable. It seems to be loosening up the more miles that gets put on it, so I am not complaining too much about performance anymore. The interior materials are, as always, excellent and the build quality is excellent. As I write this, there is about 3200 miles on the car and I have not had any problems. The sport wheels that come with the Avant are awesome looking!

This car is better than the predecessor. My friend had the old A4, it was an awesome car to begin with. But now its his turn to be jealous of mine. More power, classier and sportier interior, understated elegance all-around. Although a little bit more zip would be nice like the all-famous inline-6. But otherwise, this is really a perfect car for a perfect customer who doesn't want to splurge 50k on a C320 and still get build quality that is on par if not better.

Some cars feel like luxury while some don't regardless what each is advertised to be. I personally like to sit in one and figure it out for myself. Now sit in an A4 and you'll be surprised that you only need to pay below 30k for it. The door shuts with a heavy "chug", sometimes I would find myself closing it a few times just because the first time didn't shut it completely (my old car was a Lexus, light doors).

Before I made my purchase, I was deciding between the A4-3.0, BMW-330i, Acura TL-S, Mercedes Benz C320, and the Infiniti-G35. I must admit, for the price range, I could get the G35 and spank every other car on this comparison list. BUT, I went with the A4 because it was well rounded. Acceleration was under 7 seconds, has AWD Quattro, I love the interior, Dolphin Gray is a great color, double exhaust, and class. Something about spending 38k on an Infiniti just doesn't feel right.

Have to admit I was impressed with the new Audi A4. At first I was skeptical because the older Audi A4, though very recognized all-around, didn't appeal to me. But the new one was really cool. It is a lot more spacious, same as 3 series and C-class. Car was quick on the road, handles bumps and corners like nothing I have seen. Interior is absolutely first rate. BMW should learn from Audi's interior. If you like to ride in luxury without sacrificing personality and having to settle with Rexus blandness and fake luxury, then Audi is the answer.

I was originally going to purchase the car in 2001, but held off for financial reasons. I recently purchased the car with audi of fairfield in CT. One of the most consumer friendly dealerships I have been to. The 3.0 was a little out of my price range but the 1.8t was perfect fully loaded with almost all the options of the 3.0 plus the quattro for 30K on the nose. New new styling is much better in the rear but still could use a tweak or two to make it more like the A6. Overall it looks great but the best part is the creature comforts audi gives you inside. Hands down the best interior out of any comprable car.

It came down to the Audi A4 1.8t, BMW 325i, and Mercedes C240, with the same order in price, cheapest to most expensive. 1.8t ran about 30k loaded, 325i 37k loaded, and C240 over 40k loaded. What made it easy was the fact that the A4 trumped the rest of the competition with its beautiful and classy interior! I'm sorry, but the C-Class is quite cheaply made interior wise, and the Bimmer was looking more and more dated. Very solid ride, typicaly Teutonic. Must see in person, very muscular and athletic looking, handles like its on rails.

I love the styling and the dual temperture control, and my husband loves the power and handling (he autocrosses regular in his 914). I originally went to an Audi dealer to drive a TT and decided that it was not enough of a step up in size and comfort from my '99 Miata to justify a switch. I drove the A4 and was hooked. Two days later I picked up my Amulet Red 1.8T, 5 Speed with Sport Package, Sunroof, Xenon Lights & Bose Stereo. I am totally infatuated with my car! It is as sporty and as much fun to drive as the TT. The 5 speed shifts with ease, and with the exception of a slight turbo lag, I couldn't ask for more power. The fit and finish on this car is nearly flawless. Handling and performance could not be better. I have never been this enthusiastic about a car. It is precision "German Engineering" at it's best!

C-Class felt cheap and Bimmer interior not on par though Bimmer has a slight edge in performance. Solid ride, tight turns, ambient red light environment is addictive at night. Everything sounds like an expensive engineering feat. Love this car!!!

I looked at lots of makes before buying this car. This included the Infinity I35 and the Volvo S60. I left early one Saturday morning with the intent to buy an Infinity. But before I committed,..I want to test drive that sporty A4 that I had looked at a few weeks earlier. That evening I drove home an A4. One test drive and the marriage was consumated. I love this car and everything about it. Three months later and I'm still having fun driving. I'll say it again. I love this car. But beware at 6'2" there is not much leg room in the back-seat when I'm driving. And the center console is a little intrusive for a long legged driver. But I do love my car.

I drove all other vehicles in this class and the Audi was the best overall. The exterior design of the BMW is very sporty, and has a slight edge over the Audi w/o the sport package, but I think with the 17" rims, lowered body, stiffer suspension of the sport model beats out the BMW. The cornering is best in its class with the AWD. The sound system is also best in class. The interior is ergonomically perfect. To top it all off is the 48 month warranty on ALL maintanence. Best buy in my opinion.

No body roll and the tires stick like glue. I got the dolphin grey with ebony leatherette and the aluminum trim--very sporty. Plenty of acceleration and could notice no turbo lag. The 1.8T is more nimble than the 3.0 as it is less weight overall and more even weight distribution. Road feel is awesome.

After close to one year of brain numbing research for the most well rounded car on the market, the A4 came up as the bearer of that title. From its sexy yet classy exterior lines to its elegant and ergonomic interior to its refined performance to its long list of standard/optional features to its industry leading safety to its value pricing-you can't go wrong when picking this car as your all around everyday car.

love audi

the car is very solid feeling.it also holds the road better than any car i've owned. The brakes are outstanding.there is excellent torque for a 4-cylinder,though there is still some turbo lag.I am still kinda disappointed that power seats are not available on the 1.8,but there are plenty of manual adjustments that help to make up for that.the tiptronic trans overrides your decisions sometimes and shifts a little soft for a sporting car.if you want sporty stick with the manual.

Better than a BMW?

The A4 is a great car. Looks great, drives great has probably the best interior of any car that starts under 30K and with options like Quattro you can understand why Audi has been so successful with this car. Probably the best feature of this car is the relative sparsity of them compared to the BMW 3 series. I see at least 10 black 3 series cars every day on my way to work. So if you're looking for something a little special, the A4 is a great choice.

Just to put it in perspective - -I bought a 2002 Subaru Outback VDC Wagon for about the same price as the Audi A4 1.8 Quattro Wagon with options. I was so blown away when I drove my freinds Audi shortly after I bought the Outback - that I traded it in, took the loss, and got my Audi - -For 30k, there simpy isnt another car that drives like an suid, with all of the safety, conformt and style to boot.

I have to say of all of the different entry level luxury cars... The A4's in/outside design surpasses many cars twice it's price ! Please, BMW is seen way too often... and more often you are paying through the teeth to own one... only later to find out what type of value you had passed by !!! Trust me, three friends ( BMW drivers ) have clued me in. If it is only for an around the block drive... This car is going to surprise you again and again !

A Great Package

This car is extremely capable. It looks good and feels great. Its handling is tight. Its power is good but, with a 2.7T, it could raise the driver's response from "fun" to "overwhelming." The seats are comfortable, and highly adjustable. The Bose radio upgrade is spectacular. At its price point, the 1.8T's appearance, comfort, handling, and finish make this car tough to beat.

A perfect blend

A perfect blend of luxury, sportiness and style. It has power to spare, the 6 speed manual is smooth as silk, the sport suspension and precise steering will make every ride exciting. The sound of the engine is musical and exciting, but not intrusive. The exterior and interior styling and detail is unmatched. In summary, an exciting car that will get your adrenaline going. Sorry Acura, Infinity, Lexus, Mercedes and all the other sedating cars.

I have owned many Audi's and the new 02' A4 is a work of art. I tested and looked at many cars in the category and came back to Audi in the end. Highly recommended.

i recently purchased a 2002 1.8 T A4 quattro and the car is over all solid! transmission is smooth as silk and has semi comperable steering to 3 series BMW (with sports package). the only thing this car lacks it pick up 0 - 60 in 7.2 is a little week but the car is much less then other cars that can pull better acceleration times.. im sure the 3.0 can hold it's own though. but ihaven't driven it yet.

The 2002 All-new Audi A4 design is spectacular. At first, it looks and feels larger than the older body styles (2001 and beyond.) The hp has been increased and I can definately tell the difference. I bought the 5 speed (cause of the sportiness) and it really performs! The 1.8T is all the power you need, unless you need more top end speed (130+.)

Super car!

it has been in the shop twice for check engine light issues. It will be going in for a third time for cruise control problems. The car interior makes "wear and tear" noises that should not be evident in a brand new car. I have an '89 Benz that has less squeaks. I'm guessing the sport suspension induced the squeaks, coupled with driving the car in San Francisco's terrible city streets. For a car that weighs as much as a Toyota 4Runner, I find the V6 lacking.

I just purchased a 2002 A4 3.0 cvt, sports, premium, preffered, bose, xenon. I have to say that it is what bmw 330i's should aspire to be. The handling on this car is superb ,the interiors are exuberant and the accelaration... well, simply exhilerating. I waited a year to get this car, , and finally after I made my decision, I still had to wait to get the color and options I wanted, but let me tell you my friends it was worth every effort and time and money I spent.... this is my dream car!
