WORST CAR I've Owned and I've owned a YUGO.

The 2001 V70XC is absolutely the worst car I have ever owned or driven and I did once own a YUGO. So I think that sums it up. No one will touch this piece of junk and the most bizarre problems occur. Car has repeatedly been in the shop throughout my ownership, has almost gotten me into many, many accidents due to severe transmission problems, stalling and overheating. I think I have replaced every part on the car including the engine and transmission and most sensors and they fail again and again. Now the electrical system and information system is totally messed up. At this point I could have bought 3 brand new Chevrolets and I'm cutting my losses. This is also the worst driving car I have ever driven. It will give someone whiplash with the transmission jerking and lurching. Not even worth the recycling. I wouldn't want to curse the other items they might make out of the scrap. Never buy another Volvo period. When I see someone driving one, I can't help but pity them. AND, my model was made in Sweden. Every repair shop tells me VOLVO is JUNK and the worst nightmares to work on. No wonder only Doctors or Lawyers can own them. They're the only ones who can afford the upkeep. I do have to say that regardless of how bad it has performed and how costly it has been, in spite of all it's problems and stranding me, it always manages to get me home. But then again I never drive it more than 25 miles away from home. I really do think that my Angels have often pushed it safely home. No thanks to VOLVO. How did YUGO go bankrupt and Volvo get rich???

I bought it with 200,000 miles. I won't even tell you how much I got it for, but within a month I spent the same amount fixing an exhaust leak. I changed all the fluids, I mean ALL of them. Don't mess around when you buy used. Just change the oil, differential fluid, coolant etc.. I drove it around awhile to make sure it wasn't going to die and after 6 months I replaced the timing belt. Now you know with the AWD system if the tires aren't the same size it will cause premature wear. Buy 4 new tires at the same time. Your taking a chance if you don't. My advice, don't do it. I drive it with the wife and kids 2,000 miles and back stopping frequently to feed children and sleep in hotels. We made it no problem and its still my daily driver. For me its been an outstanding value and I love the looks and the interior.

Great car but maintenance is out of this world!

I bought this car in January for my first Big investment to keep my growing family safe. I was sold the car with several things wrong without prior knowledge. The vehicle had an oil leak (pretty significant) and the back wiper blade refused to function along with the back hatch having electrical issues. The passenger door just stopped working and the check engine light came on 2 days after buying it due to a "thermostat" code. The transmission seems weird at times, almost like it doesn't shift correctly. Mine has the "slap shift" option which may have something to do with it? but other than that it has been a really great car. This Volvo is a beast in the snow, rain, climbing mountains and handles great in all. This vehicle deserves 10 out of 5 stars for safety! I firmly beleive if I was in another vechicle our circumstances would have been much worse. We were re-ended in March, hit so hard that it knocked us into the car in front of us! Needless to say my Volvo took the hit like a champion and saved my husband, son, grandmother, and myself from serious injury. Sadly it was a total loss to damages, however I will buy another volvo (new year) to replace it!

This car looks amazing and is a very safe family car. The interior is beautiful and well set up. I did find that some plastic parts broke pretty easily though. I bought this car when it was about six years old. I put very few miles on it but spent a lot of money on repairs. Such a sad car to own especially after years of having great Volvos (1965 122s, 1978 240 wagon) The throttle body is a huge issue that costs about $2500 and caused it to intermittently stall. The heater core leaked due to being a mix of aluminum and plastic. $900 Front suspension was weak, had to replace both A arms The worst flaw was the transmission. Went out just over 100K and was almost $7000 to repair. At the cost of this I opted to send it to the scrap yard. Car looked great but the repair was more than it was worth. 2001 was known for transmission trouble, this was a lemon year.

We bought this car a few years ago used, and no less than 10 hours of driving time later the transmission started to get jerky. The car has limped along, with us babying it, but the transmission always gets jerky after 15 minutes of city driving or on hot days. It's been a constant source of stress for us. If you get this year, just get a manual and save yourself the trouble! Glad to finally be getting rid of it-- hopefully our next choice will be a wiser one.

I paid more for my 2001 V70 2.3 (manual trannie(but with just about every extra available) than I ever had for anything - 20K with 37K miles. It just turned 240,000 and has gotten me from NYC to Merida, L.A., Portland, New Orleans (yearly), Florida you name it - snow, ice, rain & wind, in great comfort, style and if I could figure out how to keep this car for the rest of my life I'd do it. It ain't cheap but you've gotta find great (not dealer) mechanics and sometimes buy your own parts online. I do understand the auto trannie in these first years sucked and have friends with those problems, but otherwise *****

I have V70 T5 model. It has 147K on it. I have to say that I really, really like the car. I just don't enjoy the difficulties that come along with it. It drives, mostly, great. I like the way it handles. It may be a station wagon, but it's still an interesting car. The leather interior is miles better than Volvo was using in the 90s. However, the transmission had to be rebuilt before I even got it off the used dealership lot. One year later, it struggles to go from 1st to 2nd gear in the morning. The driver's side control panel on the door works infrequently (so most of the time, my window won't go down and I can't lock the doors remotely). Mechanic can't find the issue.

I have driven this car in snow, rain, ice, and the deserts of AZ and nothing has slowed it down. I even drove it up a running river (not very deep) on a camping trip once. It holds my mtn bike if I fold the seats down, and I've slept in it a few times too. Yeah, it's a bit expensive to service and I think it's a little funny looking but I couldn't be much happier with a wagon! Just be sure to stay up on your maintenance because it's way cheaper than repairing something once it breaks.

Everything has systematically broken down, cracked, snapped off or ripped on this car. My mechanic even shakes his head at the ridiculously poor quality of this vehicle. I spent well over 10,000 on mechanical repairs in the last 6 years, always thinking that each trip to the mechanic would be the last.....Ha! In addition to that expense- the following have happened: glove compartment hinge broken, electrical door locks and windows don't always work, panel by drive shaft cracked, side view mirror adjuster broken off, most speakers are not working, locking system on back hatch doesn't always close, vent panel for defrost fell off, and more burnt out head and tail lights than imaginable.

AS EXPECTED AND BETTER!

First, after much review perhaps the XC models have far more problems than the 2.4T V70. I am at 124,000 and this car is the most comfortable, reliable and all around best car to drive. I also own a 2008 Audi A4, and although the Audi is the prize, I lean more toward driving the Volvo ALL THE TIME! The only issue I had was the radiator modulator going bad, which ran me about 575 dollars and only because my friend is a mechanic! Volvo would have easily been a 1000 plus job! But you know the parts are pricey, find a trusting local guy or do the regular maintenence yourself, it pays! That said I commute just shy of 90 miles a day and this car runs so smooth it is a pure joy. Also good on gas!

Volvo's are, like most European cars for people who like to drive. Despite being needlessly burdened with a 4wd system, riding 3" too high , and having 300lbs of extra weight, this car actually handles competently. I do my own work on the car so repair costs aren't really an issue but if you had to have it worked on it would be pretty expensive to maintain properly. It is certainly more expensive to run than a Kia Sorento which is because it is not a Kia Sorento. I like the fact that everything is heavy duty, even the leather on the seats is surprisingly thick.

I thought when I bought a Volvo I was getting a quality vehicle. While it does have the most comfortable seats , a decent enough stereo system, and other interior features that are very appealing it has become a glorified enclosed couch sitting in my driveway. How I wish I had read the reviews here before purchasing because I would have changed my mind. I went with it because of the reputation of the company that I knew of in the mid-80's. It lasted a total of 6 days from purchase from a private seller. I noticed that the heater wasn't putting out and checked fluid levels and topped off the radiator. It came home on a rollback: overheated+blown head gasket. Never, ever, again. What a waste!!!

Bought my V70 T5 Automatic 2 years ago not knowing the bad rep the car has. No wonder the price is pretty low. In 2 years, i put in 50K miles with total support from Volvo specialist for a routine maintenance and to tackle to 'usual' problem. It has been maintained with full synthetic at the specialist (NOT JIFFY LUBE) who knows this car in and out. Car has been served me well but it does cost a lot to maintain this car. But when you compare this wagon to a BMW / AUDI/ Mercedes wagon, then volvo still cheaper than those germans. Don't compare these cars with your HONDA or TOYOTA. Compare Euro to Euro not to the Japs. Your idea of cheap maintenance, get a honda/toyota. Problems below*

I'm thinking the only reason why this car comes up with 4-stars is for the comfort and interior and exterior design, which are excellent. Tell any Volvo mechanic that you own a 2001 Volvo V70 XC and after they stop laughing hysterically, they'll weep for you. The transmission is going to fail, if it hasn't already. Mine had an oil leak so bad, we named the car "The Valdez". Three weeks after being told that it would cost more to replace the transmission and fix the oil leaks than the car was worth, it blew up on a mountain pass. If you want a Volvo, find an older 740 (non -turbo).

This is a Volvo, right? It is actually my 4th. And my last. Too bad for what used to be a great Swedish product, but not anymore! Nice styling, great handling on the interstate and sips gas. All ok until about 120K miles. Then literally every electronic and fuel injection component, even the seatbelts started to malfunction. Thousands of dollars. Not the typical older car reliability failures and certainly Bosch doesn't make anything reasonably priced for replacement parts. My next car will be American or Japanese. Not as unreliable or expensive to fix.

Bought new in 2001 through Volvo's Diplomat Sales as special order with cloth interior (vice leather) and 5- Speed MANUAL transmission. Car has been very reliable and aside from usual wear items such as pads and rotors, have not spent more than $1K over last 10 years for repairs that included replacement of a pollution device plus new timing and serpentine belts. Perhaps having the manual transmission that's made the difference, but has been dependable and decent on gas. Would not buy another Volvo because Ford pretty much destroyed the company. Current Volvos are just too expensive for what one gets. Current models offer old technology.

Special ordered thru Diplomat Sales program with 5-Spd MANUAL transmission and cloth interior. Over the last 10 years, I've replaced only brake pads/rotors, timing belt and one emission component. Obviously having a manual transmission, spared me the universal problems associated with auto transmissions, but the car has been very dependable by any measure. Other than brakes and rotors that I replaced myself, total repairs by dealers and/or privite shops since 2001 total less than $1,000.

Front end is weak. Constantly requires repair and replacement of tie- rod-ends, ball joints, constant velocity boots, etc. You name it, it's been replaced, multiple times. Power window motors, go through them like candy. Transmission was replaced with 1 mile left in warranty. Transmission is going again but it lasted 150,000 miles. Rattles, boy does it ever. But, it hasn't rusted out and the engine is still strong after 188,000 miles. Again, I cannot tell you how much this thing has cost to maintain but it's got to be close to the purchase price. Most comfortable seats of any vehicle I have owned.

... not so great to actually own. We've had this car close to two full years now, and although I did some homework going into it, I had no idea just how annoying this vehicle is with regards to repairs. I like working on cars, but it seemed like every weekend I was out in the garage replacing a bulb, fixing a leak, trouble shooting cryptic error messages. Ugh. Final straw was finding out the transmission is going to need replacing, and the engine can't maintain oil pressure. Least reliable car I've ever owned. I intentionally bought the Volvo to be safe and something our family could rely on, instead it's a crap shoot every time you get in the car.

This is my third Volvo. I loved it for the first 100K miles or so. After that, the thing starts to get really expensive to own. It seems like every electrical, fuel injection, and exhaust system has gone bad. New alternator, catalytic converter, several sensors, computer. Not the reliability of the first two cars. BTW, Bosch doesn't make anything that costs less than 200 dollars. If you plan to keep this car or buy a high mileage Volvo, make sure you have the money in the bank to fix it! Also, the leather they used in this thing looks like crap after about 75K of normal use.

This is a good car that gets a bad rap. The tranny has a $19 fix from IPD to fix the hard into and out of 3rd shifts, and missing 3rd all together. The ETM should be replaced with one from xemodex in Canada. They have a mod that turns them into a lifetime unit. Although it is $550. Those two things will cover 90% of the complaints.

Have owned this since new. I enjoy the comfort of the ride and the saftey features. The car has never broken down on me. I travel cross country alone and even camp in it. It's solid. I have had to replace the top motor mount, mass air flow, lots of headlight and tail light bulbs, the electronic throttle and the temp sensor for the heater. But the car has 150,000 miles on it. The motor doesn't use a drop of oil. I have used Mobile 1 in it since break in. The car is amazing on icy and snow packed roads. The cup holders are handy whilst waiting for the tow truck! Gearbox has new surprises every time you drive it. ETM is an affront to our collective dignity, electrics are poor, fuel system must have been designed at Lada by the accounts lady after a bit night on the Stolle! Maintenance costs are quite severe and plentiful. After 7 previous volvos all with outstanding reliability, function and longevity it saddens me that a company could transmogrify into producing such a failure of a vehicle. When not being repaired or diagnosed, it's fast and safe with ample room and functionality, but it now drains my wallet, energy and faith in what i considered to be the best manufactured vehicles ever.

Presently at 93,000 miles. Yes I have had the odd quirky issue, but the only major item was a radiator replacement. Transmission has been fine and 'baby' runs quite well. I use my wagon to transport mulch, stone, plants in the summer and she's always been a jewel. I love this wagon and plan on keeping for a very very long time.

Bought used in Sept 2008 with 27000 miles, now is 37000. I change the oil and maintain myself. Fairly easy to work on, best to have code reader, but have not needed yet. Light bulbs here and there needing replacement, pretty easy to do. Japanese Aisen Warner transmission requires special mobil synthetic oil and dipstick should be checked regularly, it is in an awkward location, way low on drivers side. Only use Full synthetic oils, including brake fluid. If you do I would expect 200000 miles of good value, as our 25 year old volvo 240s. We love this car. Have not added any as trans. fluid is pink. Very good highway car.

New to the Volvo world but my brother has owned three, including his current '02 V70. Just brought home our '01 T5 last month; it's a well-maintained 2-owner w. 95k mi. I've owned various BMWs, Jaguars, VWs, etc. & this Volvo compares very well. From the interior & exterior design to the performance & fun of driving, the car has an overall feel of real quality & thoughtful engineering. As preventative maintenance, I changed the timing belt (incl. tensioner & pulley) & water pump after the purchase; also put in a new cabin air filter. The '01 V70 sometimes gets a bad rap, but I suspect that's at least as much owner issues as the car itself. Thumbs up on a great car, especially the T5.

I've had 3 2001 xc 70's, now I'm down to 1 and I have a 2001 V70 T5. They all have had the same problem- TRANSMISSION....I think somebody should start a lawsuit against Volvo because anyone who has a 2001 Volvo has a transmission problem. I've tried everything to fix the problem...nothing works. The only thing that would help is buying a whole new transmission.

We have owned Volvo 240s since 1991 when I decided Honda Civics were not safe enough. My reasoning came from the junk yard. I would look at the cars there and ask did the occupants become seriously injured or possibly killed? When I looked at Volvo's, the answer was no. Along comes 2008, we decide to modernize, we buy a new Nissan Versa sedan, side airbags, front airbags, the works. My wife was rear ended while she was 15mph, the other driver 50mph, both the other drivers Nissan Sentra and my wifes's car totaled by the insurance companies. both parties injured moderately. Versa did ok but if she had been in the V70 I believe she would have been injured little, if at all. Volvo for life!

When I was looking for a car, I had four criteria: safety, reliability, longevity, and environmental impact. Volvo rated well in all categories. This car has been nothing but a disappointment and money pit. Just a short list of previous problems: throttle module, fan, fuel system. Now, the heating is out and the transmission needs to be replaced, to the tune of $5K. I can't tell you how disappointed I am. The car was great to drive for the first two years, and then it seemed to fall apart in spite of being well cared for. I resent Volvo. (Thanks, Ford.) By contrast, my 2002 VW has more miles on it and has required no repairs, just maintenance. It's VW for me from now on.

Besides family of five chores and vacations, we take this volvo antiquing and regularly treat it like a truck. On the highway we get 28-30mpg on regular grade fuel.

After 2 small SUV's I bought the XC. With the interior capacity, roof rack with cross rails and roof storage container, I can carry more than when I had an SUV. The ride is much smoother and the power of the turbo helps getting on the highway. I get about 18mpg around town and 28mpg on the highway. I have kept up with maintenance and only had a problem with a leaky angle drive. I have to drive farther for work, so I am putting more highway mileage on it. Very comfortable to drive long distance.

This car has been babied - all services, all maintenance, all done at the dealership. We just cannot justify a new transmission at a cost of over $4k. I thought Volvos were better cars. You know, Sweden has harsh weather and terrain, so the vehicles produced there should be appropriately durable. maybe they have that public health care thing for cars also. yes, add me to the list of casualties. I bought my V70 XC last year and have had nothing but problems. Transmission was jerky so I took it to the dealer, only to have it reflashed with no improvement. While there, they discovered bad trans and engine mounts, leaking angle drive and several broken suspension components. This is in addition to the $2000 scheduled maintenance, adding up to almost what I paid for this vehicle. The service and repair history I requested was 34 pages!

I purchased this car for the turbo and carrying capacity. I've been pleased. I bought it at 75,000 mi and now it's at 100K. I've kept up with the maintenance, which has been a bit more expensive than my sedans, but I have not experienced the transmission issues nor electronic issues that are posted on this site. Get the extended warranty! Well I just received the call from the dealership that my Volvo needs a new transmission ($4,500). Since the car is worth between $5-$6K that’s it. The car was a great car to drive. The car just was not reliable. After about 50-60K miles, every trip to the dealer was another $1K bill. I’m not talking consumables here but things that have never broken on any car I have ever owned. (a radio that would change stations every time the car hit a bump or the driver window that fell out of its track twice -after being fixed). There is nothing like driving a $40K car with duct tape holding your window up. My wife hates this car.

My vehicle has the standard five cyl. non turbo engine. I purchased the car new. I really like this car. It is stylish, it's been reliable, and it gets good gas economy for its size. It runs very well on mid-grad gasoline, runs very smoothly on premium, and runs OK on regular (no pinging, but much less zip). The car is heavy, so acceleration is not the best but is adequate. Get the turbo if you want to take off in a hurry. My biggest complaint is the lack of Volvo dealers available to service the car. Also, there are some high tech features that become expensive to fix. Even small items are expensive as the parts sources are limited, making trim and accessories expensive.

Transmission problem temporarily fixed with some software upgrades. However, at 56k miles, the car jolts between gears and it needs an entire new transmission. I have read this is a problem with this model. Volvo NA claims no responsibility and that the car is simply past warranty. The company hung up on me! Purchased this wagon just before the arrival of our 3rd child. I wanted something safe and reliable. Every 6 months we're at the shop with an EXPENSIVE fix. The worst problem was the throttle body (it was eventually recalled and we were reimbursed). The car surged and stalled and you never knew when you pulled out into an intersection if the car would hesitate and threaten to stall. Each time I pay for an expensive fix, I decide to just keep the darn thing. Then, of course, another huge repair 6 months later. The most recent problem, a vibration in right front area, is apparently an axle. Last one for me - my husband's toyota costs a whopping $150/year for service/maintenance. Done with Volvo!

Not to forget that I'm not embarrassed to drive a wagon since it looks sporty and more upscale than most grocery getters. Reliability? Running great at 131K w/ some problems along the way. But c'mon, this is no Honda/Yota. My Benz that cost 2x as much has 2x the issues and my new BMW has been in the shop more than not, and like my V70, is a first year production model. We have already spent well over 5K replacing items that should never need replacing (the radiator, 4 or 5 control modules, etc.), and now we are facing a 5K transmission replacement at 94K miles. We bought this car because my husband has always had Volvos. Well he'd never had one like this! We've had major repairs that have cost big money. From the turbo clip, to the gas cover, to a transmission update ($1400!) which didn't fix the problem. We were just told the transmission is about to go so we have to get out from under this money pit. In a little over a year we have spent close to $3000. Please save yourself time, money and mental health and buy some other car. We've had two software updates covered by the recall (I say covered by the recall in that we did not have to pay for the software update, but no one reimbursed us for time, trouble, babysitters, etc). We've spent $1000 on the abs module and more in just the 2.5 years we've owned the car. We're going today to trade it in on something else. I currently have 120k miles on the car and running well. I was recently hit (drvrs frnt) by a teen boy who ran a red light but slowed to about 20mph. My wife and 3 kids were in the car. The damage to the car was literally unidentifiable except for a slight hood adj that was made in a few minutes. What more can I say.

My husband totaled our V70 last week. He hit an interstate wall at 70 mph after being clipped by a tractor trailer. He was rushed to the hospital but walked away five hours later with a bad seat belt bruise and a cut from his sunglasses. The car did not survive and I've already bought a new Volvo to replace it. We bought this car at 5 yo and 65000 miles. Got a great deal, local family had all the service records. Besides being in the lightbulb of the month club, there was one issue with the throttle module that was replaced under warranty and never acted up again. We had the car for 12000 miles and only had to change the oil changed and replace two light bulbs. Man, do I miss that car!

When my husband passed I needed a reliable car. I purchased a used XCV70Turbo in June 2004. I have driven Volvos for 30 years, 7 new and this one used. I felt confident I had a dependable vehicle. The car performed well until February 2007 when the engine began missing and stalling. My dealer said the engine has failed and is ruined. It is still under warranty but the warranty company refuses to honor it. The car has 75,000 miles on it. I now have no car and it will cost me several thousand to just get it off my hands - I still owe more than the dealer will give me even for a trade in. I will not be throwing this kind of money at Volvo ever again. Sad ending to a long friendship w Volvo.

I bought this car with the intention of keeping it for a long time. With 64,000 mi. this car is the most unreliable (by far) vehicle I've ever owned! I spent nearly $2000 at 60,000 mi. for service and repairs and 3000 mi. later the service light is on again. I am on the third main computer module (thankfully under warranty), ABS module ($1000), the throttle module left me stranded hundreds of miles from home. I've replaced a wheel bearing, power steering problems and countless light bulbs repeatedly. Easily over $2000 in repairs alone, not including tires, brakes, regular maintenance, etc. Great when it works, but can no longer trust it! Will be replaced soon, not Volvo.

I have had my XC for 1 year now. I just took the car in for the 60k mile and was told I also needed to replace inner tie rods, along with some other expensive repair. I noticed one other reviewer also had to replace. I find this to be ridiculous. The worst thing, my car jolts, jumps, throttles off and I had the software replacement on the recall. Last night check engine light on when I just spent $1600 last month at the shop. This is scary. I am a loyal Volvo customer, this is my 2nd wagon (last one was 12 yrs old), but I don't think I will purchase another. The throttle problem is a dangerous one as you don't know when the car is not going to respond?

I do love the feel, looks, and power of this car. It is ergonomically the best car I've yet owned. I am, however, completely fed up with the many repairs (expensive ones at that) that I've needed for the last 3 years (since the warranty expired). I replaced emission sensors twice, replaced strut top caps, replaced the drive shaft. I have lost confidence in this car... intermittent "emissions system service required" & ABS service required" messages, one blinker bulb or another blowing out every 4 months or so. A month ago a hissing by the brake pedal. Diagnosis: time to replace the brake booster - $800. Tonight a new message: "transmission service required". Argh!

The car feels quality..inside/out..and when we got the Carfax report...and it says..the car was imported directly from Sweden..that sold us... I've owned 2 other Volvo wagons prior to this one. A 94' 850 T-5, 99' XC and my current 01' V70 T-5. I live in Anchorage, Alaska and decided on the 2 wheel drive model due to my previous XC was a nightmare with repairs. Drive handling with my 2001 V70 during winter has been pleasant on slippery roads with the normal all weather tires. The winter tires rubbed against the wheel wells while turning and elected to ditch them. The lower ground clearance helps with stability with little body roll in turns I've noticed. Transmission takes a little getting use to for effective use. I've found when accelerating from a stop it was best to ease on the gas which allowed gears to catch up.

At 5 years and 50,000 miles, our 2001 XC70 needed: a new ignition-key tumbler ($600), a new set of rear shocks ($750), which had destroyed a 6 month old set of tires and required their replacement ($650). Lastly, its solenoid transmission design failed while we were on the highway, cutting all power in a critical, dangerous situation. Solution? $3,400 for a new transmission. Together with some minor glitch fixes also not covered by warranty, our 'new car' has cost an avg of $1,250 per year in repairs alone. Proving, once again, you never actually own a Volvo...you just keep paying rent to your mechanic, local towers, and Volvo dealer service. Volvo Customer Care = total fraud.

It has been 2 years since my last update. Purchased my T5 out of my lease 2 years ago - car is now 5 years old with 62K miles. Thank god I purchased the VIP warranty. Took it in for the $700 60K service (!) and mentioned a knocking sound from the suspension and also a bad oil leak. They found knocking was result of broken sway bar connectors and a broken engine mount (over $700 in repairs), and the oil leak was from the engine block itself, and may require replacement of the whole engine!!! They have had car for over a week. This was after replacing a seal on the turbo return ($150 repair) on the previous service. VIP warranty good for 2 more years or 100K miles - will sell before then.

My family and I have driven Volvos for most of our lives, from the old 240's up to today's V70's. I have to say that (arguably) though looks have improved, quality control has not. Sure my V70 looks top notch, but I've had multiple issues with the car from the brakes to the ETM to the suspension. All of these problems are not cheap to fix, ranging from $700-1200 a visit. It seems that Volvo dropped the ball on their 2001 line of V70's, and they're not considering any recalls. You'll find many owners having the same problems: ETM gives out while driving at highway speeds, the clunk felt when starting up from a stopped position, the brake rotors needing replacement every 20K miles, etc.

I wanted a Volvo because of its safety. I picked the XC70 because it had all wheel drive. Since we've had this car, it's had nothing but problems. First, we had to replace all the bushings for the suspension system which cost me $1800. Next the EMT failed which cost another $1200. Now, they're telling me the torque mount, inner tie rod and rear lumbar rod needs replacing and it's going to cost me another $1500.

We now have 65K miles on our black V-70 T-5, and appreciate more and more each day. With the optional sport seats, we can drive for 5 hours pain free. The car drives like a luxury car on the freeway, but handles like a well-tuned sports sedan on the back roads. It has incredible mid-range passing capabilities. If driven under 80 mph on long road trips it will cover 525 miles per tank. The only down side of owning this car, is the tire life on the optional 17" wheels (20-25K), and they aren't cheap. It is a kick in the pants to drive, can hold 5 people and their luggage, or fold the seats down and it can swallow an antique side- board. It's a sleeper hot rod, family hauler & truck!

What a disappointment! Our volvo xc was my dream car but we've had nothing but problems with it and we're still experiencing problems. At first the problems were minor and under warranty, so it wasn't any big deal. But we have an extended warranty but it wouldn't cover the $1000 throttle that went out. Our volvo dealership indicates that it's common for the throttle to go out and this was at less than 60K miles. We won't buy another one and I'm hoping to get rid of this one before anything else goes wrong! These are too overpriced for all the maintenance that is required.

I used to love this car, despite the squishy transmission that my husband has complained about since day one. Then, last week, the o-ring failed causing the car to lose all power steering fluid. I had to have it towed the dealer for repair. Yesterday I had to replace all 4 rotors and brake pads at 48,000. The brake pads were originally replaced around 25,000. They assure me that this is typical?! I thought it was unbelievable. I've had many of the other problems reported by others, slipping transmission, service light appearing for no apparent reason, etc., but the brakes are my last straw. This is my 2nd and last Volvo!

Beautiful car, quality interior materials and exterior fit and finish. Outstanding fuel economy and extended range comfort and utility. Difficult radio set up, bulky A- pillars and out of place cheap plastic touches. The ride is detached for cars in this price range, light bulbs blow more often than you need fuel. The tranny went at 30K forcing an extended warranty purchase. Local Volvo dealer provides exceptional service at a price you would expect with this class of car. The car is far too noisey for this class. With 100k just around the corner a new Volvo is not out of the question although better cars in this price range exist.

I bought this volvo a year ago. The engine performance, styling, and comfort is like no other. However, I have had too many problems...suspension parts, rubber bushings, brake booster, light bulbs, turn signal relay switch have been replaced in a 12 month period. My previous Toyota 4runner I drove for 5 years and not one single problem. I had the opportunity to drive a Toyota while my Volvo was being repaired and I will say that even with the constant little troubles, the Volvo's ride, performance, and craftsmanship are way above the Japanese and American cars I have owned in the past. Conclusion....even with the little problems, I still love my Volvo.

Volvo has a class action lawsuit on models with Electronic Thottle Module (ETM) (V70, S80, S40, late model cars). This was filed in 2002 and is pending. The engine shuts down with no gas pedal response. This is very dangerous. ETM gets carbon deposit buildup. I tried to get Volvo North America customer care to replace this unit because it is a MAJOR design flaw, but they would not. I'm waiting on a decision. It would cost me over $1100 because it is out of warranty. Yet they never sent me any communication while I was under warranty and they knew about this problem. I would never buy Volvo again because their slogan, "Volvo for Life" is far from the truth.

We've owned the car since new,50k total miles. We've had about a dozen of the electrical problems like others describe, all taken care of under warranty. Some topics I haven't seen mentioned: Volvo has dropped the ball re several areas of active safety. There's poor visibility out the rear of the car, even worse at night due to the dim backup lights. The dash reflects badly in the windshield. The response of the electronic throttle is different in forward vs reverse, its disconcerting. The HID headlights (have used them on loaner cars)are terrible, standard ones are quite good. On the other hand, our dealer Mitchell in CT is excellent and actually fairly reasonable in price.

We had a 1998 S70 and loved it so much that we decided to 'upgrade' to a 2001 V70 T5. What a mistake. I hate driving this car. The adaptive transmission never reacts the way you want it to. When you come to a stop, the transmission shifts to neutral (fuel saving feature). But when you're ready to go, you have to wait for the car to get back in gear before you start moving. Dealership has reprogrammed the transmission 3 times with no improvement. Press the accelerator and nothing happens. Press it more, and the car lurches forward. Volvo customer service told me "we sell lots of cars so it must not be a problem." LAST VOLVO I'LL EVER OWN.

I bought the Volvo after driving guzzlers -- a Suburban and a Sequoia. What sold me, however, was the built in booster seats for my kiddos. (They can get in and out and buckle all by themselves now, and no more lugging around big booster seats!) It is very smooth, quick and super in the rain. We've been a Volvo family for several years, and when we saw the new body style, we knew we had to have one. It's a beautiful car, but the reliability of the newer Volvos leaves a lot to be desired. We've had transmission problems from almost day one. It's a certified car, so that was our only saving grace. We had to have several software upgrades for the transmission, and the last time it was in, I was told that if this didn't "fix" the problem, I would be the proud owner of a new transmission on a vehicle with 65,000 miles on it. My independent mechanic told me to avoid all Volvo's newer than 99 until they work out the bugs. I'll stick with my 240.

Wife traded a minivan for this and loves it. This car has 2 personalities >= 70mph on highway is awsome. Comfortable, good power + mileage (28-29) City driving is sluggish and poor mileage (17-19). For our style of driving, we'll go with the 2.5T next time. Reliability has been ok. Both headlight + various position/brake lights burned out once. The bulbs are cheap and very easy to replace. Front light lens assembly is a single unit (glass) and cost $300 for parts when chipped. Get ipd's plastic lens protector.

What a disappointment! After driving my 1989 240 wagon for nearly 300,000 mi, I decided to get the safety features of a new wagon. That's all I got. This wagon has less cargo space and is shorter in height (so I bump my head getting things out of the back). I've had trouble with the electronics in the passenger side door 3 times. The driver side inside handle is pulling away from the door and will be very expensive to fix. The cup holders in the rear seat are crummy and have broken on my car. Overall much more expensive to maintain. I do like the integrated child booster seats. Well, no more Volvos for me. I feel like I'm driving a Ford; oh right, I am!

Where do i start with the problems i have had? Ever been awakened at 6am on a sunday morning to a horn that won't stop honking? I have - 2 different times. Transmission started slipping the third week of ownership. Finally got the dealer to replace the transmission at 20,000 miles (after the car slipped out of gear and died on a busy street during rush hour). Door lock and alarm system has been replaced. Fuel tank door keeps falling off. Seems that I replace light bulbs way too often. Have contaced Volvo customer service, but they don't seem to care about my problems. They just keep telling me how safe and reliable their cars are. Needless to say,

I bought my T5 from a woman that ordered her car and picked it up in sweden. when she returned to the states she decided to sell her car. My volvo is a 5 speed manual trans. It is so fun to drive! No real mechanical problems, a turbo boost sensor went out, but replaced under warranty. Just returned from a 1200 mile road trip to Yosemite. I loved driving through the mountains. I can't wait to test drive a new AWD T5. The 2001 stereo is lacking, radio signal pick-up is moderate at best & I had to have the CD changer replaced twice (warranty). San Diego Volvo is very good to deal with.

Volvos have been produced by swedish engineers whose soul purpose was to make a vehicle that would ultimately save your life. That was over 2 decades ago, since then they have layered comfort, reliability, handling, practicality and power upon the one thing that singles out Volvo from the rest: your Safety. The Volvo xc-70 turbo brought volvo into a dimension of automobile ingenuity. Riding this car in about a foot of powder in Utah, I almost felt as if I were on a snowmobile. Stopping short in snow, I wouldn't slide for more than a foot (at speeds of 20-40 mph). Lets not forget about its 220hp that leaves most sports cars in the dust! Volvo rocks!

We replaced a GM minivan of dubious quality with this. The turbo makes it feel more like a performance sedan. Roomy back seat and lots of cargo space. The free 6 yr/100k mi Volvo Certified Used Car warranty is terrific. The dealer recently replaces some working lightbulbs with new ones, for free (apperently lightbulbs have been an issue.) We plan to drive this car 'til it wears out, then go back for another.

Take it for service to Volvo of Tacoma (WA) and their service dept. is outstanding. They go out of their way to make sure we are satisfied. My reliable 240 was ready to be replaced, and I knew I wanted to stick with the brand. The XC looked good, my wife and I had a child on the way, and we were never interested in the whole SUV thing. (Do I even need to mention the "M" word?) It wasn't until I spoke to a friend who had a photograph of the next generation Volvo wagons that I put my purchase on hold. Talk about a dream come true. The T5 has it all - amazing looks, horsepower to spare, incredible handling and control, and it is perhaps the most comfortable car I've ever had the pleasure of driving. Given the choice of a huge engine or XC, I went with the engine - and am very happy I did.

It drips oil on my garage floor also leaks transmission fluid. Driver's seat wouldn't move that was fun!!! Window on the passenger side would sometimes does not roll-up. We have replaced all the bulbs in the car at least once! Now a $34 turn signal on the side needs replacing. Now it has the brake light come on - dealer can't fix it. The V70 T5 has reasonable performance, but it did not live up to its potential. I understand from my friends in Sweden that Volvo actually provided reprogrammed chips to V70 T5 owners because the 2.4T outperformed the T5. From the very beginning, we have had a number of problems related to poor quality control. Interior trim on the A-post fell off the first month we had it. Over 10 bulbs have burned out. The dealer has replaced them without charge up until now, but it still means we have to take the car in frequently. The biggest problem was complete transmission failure at 60,000 miles. Totally unacceptable in a car in this price range.

OK, I had ONE bulb replaced (they're FREE so what?). NO other problems whatsoever and I drive fast, cruise at 80 mph get 25 mpg....These other people whining about tires lasting 20K (Z rated 17 inch, what do you want, they handle great), sidewall bubbles are caused by bashing into objects with too low air pressure (try 38 psi all around), maintenance costs are cheap, Mobil 1 oil change every 5K...love our car!

I've been driving this wagon for almost 3 years and still love it. It's fast, responsive looks great and hauls a bunch of stuff (or 7 people with the 3rd row). It's still a solid ride, never been in the shop for anything other than regular maintenance. Cup holder lost it's spring and original 17" tires (too loud) swapped for Michelin Pilots. It's only fair competition is the BMW and MB wagon (at least another $10K more). No mini-van or SUV comes close in terms of value, style, performance. In response to previous comment on '01 wagon being a "jerry-rigged Ford" ...Ford bought Volvo in '99 when the new model was already at the auto shows.

If you prefer the safety and handling of a station wagon to an SUV or a van, the V70 seems to be the ideal choice.But... Our V70 has been in the shop eight times in two years. Five bulbs have burned out, and not because of daytime running lights either, as turn signal and brake lights also burned out. The service department just states that this happens. Unfortunately, the most crashworthy car is not very safe when you are driving around out of town at night with one headlight. The remaining choices for a family are a much more expensive but well-made foreign wagon (not a jerry-rigged Ford) or a safe, boring, soggy-driving Toyota or Honda van.

Update of prior '01 T5 review after almost 2 years. Still love car, except for minor problems faced by others. "Upgraded" Pirelli tires SUCK - tire performance average and durability terrible - replaced three tires that developed "bulges", repaired many leaks and they are almost worn out after 27K miles. Mechanical dash cupholder broke. Finally, thanks to "daytime running lights" that leave all the lights on all the time, bulbs burn out often - replaced a headlight, turn signal and brake light. Still, these problems minor and tire issue will go away after Pirellis replaced once and for all. Positives of this excellent car completely outweigh negatives.

But after 12,000 miles, the car doesn't accelerate worth anything! The brakes needed to be replaced at 18,000 miles. The tires needed replacing at 20,000. The interior rattles like crazy. And there is a knocking sound whenever you make a left turn (which the dealership says is a "Normal Event.") The fuel pump is noisy! Buy a Toyota Sienna and you'll be much happier with it!

We purchased this car used. It had 6K miles on it, and had been used as a rental. We bought it at significant savings, and because it had been used for part of the year, we were able to get the "extended warranty" for certified used cars. We have never had to invoke any warranty repair. The car has performed beautifully. The mileage is impressive for such a large car. Plenty of pick up to be had without the Turbo. Having previously driven a compact car, I can tell you I had no trouble adjusting to this one. It is easy to maneuver.

We've had constant trouble with our V70 T5, including electrical problems, brake problems, transmission software issues, speakers, rattling glovebox, malfunctioning cup holder, and we've had to replace 10 tires on the car. At 15 - 18 average MPG, the 247 HP of this car comes at a pretty steep price. The depreciation on the car in terms of dollars per month or year is VERY HIGH too. Our family has been delighted with Volvo products, (740s, 240s before that) until now. As of this writing, my advise would be to consider an alternative car/ brand.

the v70 2.4T is to soccer moms what patty lupone is to WB network programming: howlingly inappropriate. this is a bonafide sports sedan with extra greenhouse space where a trunk would be. The turbocharged inline 5 that Volvo's been tweaking for years has reached its apex starting with the 2001 model year, and it is one of the smoothest, lag-free, and willing powerplants of its type I've driven. Volvo also chose to place the V70 on solid footing in the corners, so handling is crisp and without excessive body roll or sag, and the ride is just dynamite, even on the potholed streets of Chicago.

Having my XC for almost 18mos now, it has been remarkably reliable and (almost) trouble free. The dealership (Volvo of Pleasanton, CA) has a fantastic sales staff and a horrible service department. I have had to actually argue with the Service Manager on 2 different occasions. I would recommend buying your Volvo in Pleasanton but having it serviced elsewhere. A previous review complained of front suspension problems, I experienced some of the same. However, it was repaired and has been fine since. The traction abilities of this car are remarkable! It's almost as though it's on rails. My only complaint is it's mediocre acceleration.

Replaced a wonderful and trustworthy '91 745T Wagon, believing that Volvo wouldn't let me down, was I wrong. Volvo seems to have lost their touch with build quality. Front end noises (clunking) began at 5K, replaced ball joints, bushings, and control arms. Thermostat replaced at 10K, geartronic transmission has been problematic requiring various software patches, 8 light bulb replacements (including the rear license plate bulbs!), replaced two cargo covers that have shreaded under nominal use. The car is sluggish in hot humid weather, too much body roll in cornering for a "sport suspension", steering is ponderous and heavy.

I've had the car for 16 months and 25K miles. Absolutely NO mechanical problems at all. I had some flasher light and remote entry problems due to bad parts, both fixed. Wonderful to drive, dealer has been incredible.

Don't you dare call it a station wagon!

I'm a Gen-X'er and feel proud to drive what many may see as "your grandpa's wagon". I am here to tell you it is not! This is simply the most comfortable and safe feeling car you can buy. It looks like a muscular black panther ready to strike. Although a bit sluggish off the line, it performs well past 1st gear. This is the first car I can see never getting tired of.

Overall, this is an excellent car; probably the most comfortable of any car I've ever driven. It has a few reliability problems (since I bought it in July 2000, I've had to replace the alternator, right electric door lock, brake booster, both headlight bulbs, one tail light bulb, and some air conditioning work - can't remember exactly, but it wasn't blowing cold air). Visibility out of the rear side windows is hampered a little by the front seat headrests. Very peppy, wonderful ride, and fun to drive.

I would argue that no car is perfect... yet the new Volvo wagon is nearing the unattainable. I have been driving my T5 for twenty-one months, and simply adore it. My recommendations to anyone considering the V70 wagon would be as follows: 1) Get the turbo. I see people in my rear view mirror with their jaw in their lap as I pull away from a red light. This car is fast. 2) Get the 17" Pirelli tires. I'm not one for tricked out cars, but these make the car look HOT and keep you on the road. That's about it. I can't wait to upgrade to the new wagon, due out in a year or so with an even bigger engine. Someone at Volvo needs a nice pat on the back!!!

On Nov. 03 of 2001, my wife and I purchased or second Volvo. The first was a new 1988 740 Turbo (which still runs as well as the day we drove it home). As the '88 was approaching 14 years of age, we thought that a newer vehicle should transport both my wife and son. My wife spotted her soon-to- be-new car on the dealer's lot of Bozzani Volvo (Covina, CA) when, one day she dropped the '88 740 off for its usual servicing. As she was walking through the lot, she spotted the 2001 Cross Country (dark blue) and, in short, the rest is history. To those who report that the Volvo is the next best thing to a tank, we agree.

When I was shopping for a new vehicle I looked at the RX300, X5,MDX, ML320 and even the Yukon by GMC. But for some reason I liked the look and comfort of the XC, so thats what I purchase. Let me tell everyone out there after reading some horror stories on the net as well as good ones I was a bit nervous. But the car is solid and probably the most comfortable to sit in. No problems at all!

I really love this car. The seats are very comfortable. The car is so quiet, you can actually hear the car stereo, which is excellent. The car is very quick, it is like a Porsche wagon.
