If you have other cars, time and/or money to tinker, and want a nice and occasionally practical enthusiast's vehicle, the Passat 2.8 5-speed might fit the bill. As reliable daily transportation, not so much. Had issues with the cam tensioners, and I can see online that this is a frequent VW/Audi problem. Other problems with body hardware (back door not opening, trunk not closing, cornering light falling out), electrical, brakes, suspension, etc. It's great when it's great, but that's rarely the case. Actually, it's a very nice ride on the open road, but a beast in heavy city traffic. Next time, I'd sooner get a Mazda 3/6, or even a BMW 3-series for a small to mid-size sedan with a little sportiness. I will say that there is an active community that supports these B5 Passats, with online chat groups, and there are specialty shops that understand these cars and don't charge dealer prices. Just got quoted $800 for a clutch locally, and I hear of dealers charging several thousand for the same repair. Just no reason for it. If you buy a Passat used from a dealer, get the best warranty you can afford. You will need it, and soon! When checking the classifieds, it seems all of these have had a good deal of work done, and still have some issues, never being 100%, but still lasting quite a few miles, sometimes upwards of 250K. They sell in a tight range, not much more for relatively good shape vs. a fixer with potential. I'd say get it checked out first, but the average local mechanic is afraid of these cars, and for good reason.

Not only Forbes rank VW 1.8 Turbo 2001.5 New Passat as one of the top 10 makes and models that can drive reliably above 250,000 miles, but my owner experience point in this directions. This year model is the only one in the VW Passat history that the power train was built entirely on the Audi platform. While the chassis was extended from A4 and is shorter than A6, Passat the engine and transmission are one of the best power train Audi built ahead of its time. Many experts, not the jealous German auto-haters in America, called 1.8L turbo engine with torque and acceleration that beats smaller V6 engines - engineering Marvel. For 127,000 miles driven understandably I needed to replace only wear and tear parts like twice the battery, front headlights, the alternator and of course - the belt, water pump and some other. This small turbo engine has remarkable performance and gas mileage and requires premium gasoline. The optimal economic speed is reaching 70 mpg and above when on cruise control achieved long trip average gas consumption of 34-35 mpg. On steep and long Altamon pass off Hwy 580 the driver need to only press a bit the accelerator engaging the turbo kick and this Passat/Audi engine takes you on the ride passing all vehicles in a short distance. This is how powerful is this engine marvel is. Drive handling is much better than competing Toyotas, Hondas, Mazdas and other mid-size sedans. 1.8Turbo Passat is much better performing car than the previous I own mid size cars from the most popular makes.

Love it

It drives, smell, looks like its Audi A4 cousin, and just as expensive to run and maintain. It is a great running car, with very good handling characteristics, it has an absolute classic style that I think will never get old. The interior although nice, is made of very poor quality. At the expensive of soft touch and expensive looking coverings, all of that starts to degrade, crack and rub off over time. There are rattles and squeaks happening that I notice does not happen on other cars of this year. The car has great gas mileage, but then its off set by the 1.8 T requires premium gas. It has great space for 5 and loads of head room. It's a great European car if it wasn't for the unreliability, cost of ownership, and expensive fill-ups. You could literally spend $1500 dollars on this car one month and in two months have another bill for 2K. I've had my VW experience so this will probably be the last VW product I purchase, and there is more to life than spending money on fixing a car..lol I rather bite the bullet and buy a Honda.

This car is a super fun and safe car. Lots of go, easy to manage, just all around a bad ass car. When it's not broken down. Mine had problem after problem. The transmission finally gave out at 172,000 and with that being 5,000 to replace plus $1000 for a catalytic converter and $1500 for a timing belt we sold it for scraps and got a reliable Honda. Fun to drive but hard on your wallet

Bought this car with 100K mile on it. car looked good. ran fine. the little 1.8 turbo engine really runs good. great handling at high speeds. now for the cons... after about two months the ignition coil packs started going out one by one. have replaced some twice. then its the crank position sensor. then the exhaust. next was the windshield. no dings in it but is just cracked for no ryme or reason. when i first saw the car it was love at first sight but that didnt last long... expensive repairs that never stop.

I love this car. It's such a gem of a car. If you simply take care of it, change the oil (full synthetic) every 3,000 miles (it does gum up fast in this car, unfortunately. Just don't go over 3,000 without changing it), put premium gas in it, and generally just take care of it and it will last you forever. I bought mine at 171,000 miles from an owner who took great care of it and it drives like it's brand new! Yes, repairing a VW is generally more expensive, but you get what you pay for and you fix it far less often. I'm confident I will take this car to 250,000 miles easily. It is so reliable. I wouldn't hesitate for one second to recommend this vehicle to anyone!

I have a 2001 Passat with over 211,000 miles on it and I will keep it for another 211,000. This is a great car, no problems German engineering is terrific. I take care of my cars. I have read some of the other reviews on this site and all I can say is this. When people write in all caps with exclamation points they are usually crazy drama queens and flying off the handle is common place for them. They are led around like puppies by their emotions or they are young kids that don't understand many things about life but believe they know it all. They haven't come to the age of understanding what real problems are and everything is a major inconvenience because they lack the patience to endure.

Car drives great! BUT.. Things keep breaking due to poor quality parts!!! For instance, I was forced to replace two window regulators that broke in half although one window was never used... the regulator just broke for no reason... And for that reason, I will never purchase another VW. Their parts are either cheap, badly made or don't fit. If the car was well built, it would be a gem.. Thanks to the **** parts, VWs are ****!!

I bought my passat in 2008 with 140,000 miles on it. It was at a used car lot and I liked everything about it. The exterior/interior were in great shape and after the test drive i was sold. I drive 106 round trip miles per day to work so I needed a car that was good on gas and the passat fit the bill. As of today I have over 250,000 miles on the passat and drives like the day I purchased it. I have had to put minor repairs as well as regular scheduled maint. (oil changes, battery, headlight, wiper relay) but you will have this with any car. Do yourself a favor-do not get repairs done at a dealership. With any car they will charge you 3x more then what a good local mechanic would.

I bought my Passat about a year ago and I honestly say it is one of the worst cars I have ever owned. I bought it to replace and aging Dodge Dakota I was driving...which was a much better vehicle. These cars are plagued with all sorts of electrical problems such as interior lights not working, connections breaking in the doors, etc. The side windows have scratch marks from rolling them down...I have to clean out the felt liners about once a month to prevent this. The heater is dismal and can only keep the vehicle warm above 30 degrees. Maintenance is expensive, timing belt cost about $1,000 dollars to replace, and my mechanic says I must use full synthetic oil. Will never another VW.

Traded in 1 01 Malibu, for an 01 Passat. I'm from the UK, and driven a new VW Polo..no problems, and loved the build quality. 64K at purchase, and no problems for a year. Then a CEL..which I ignored..found out to be a MAF sensor, then coil ignitor issues(recall), tie end rods, vacuum hoses, oil cooler went at 120K, and had to flush entire system. With premium fuel, expensive oil changes, brakes, annual coolant flushes, the constant worry of a blown head gasket or turbo failure was not far off. Excellent when new, but get sell after 5 years and don't look back. I was on first name terms with all the mechanics at the local garage. Do NOT buy a used Passat, simple advice.

Puchased 1/08 w/ 79k & it now has 140k. I bought it randomly at a car auction and loved it for the first 20k. From then on I have spent $2k on stuff breaking and $1k on routine maintenance like the timing belt. From 100k to 130k I have replaced a lot of sensors, tie rod ends, bearings etc.... I've gotten 10k trouble free miles since then, yeah! With this car you have to be vigilant about oil changes and don't skimp. It is a great highway cruiser and I average 30mpg. The drivers seat is still firm and most of the interior is holding up except for some paint peeling. All in all it's an ok car, the reliability is the deal breaker for me. I'll be buying a Japanese car next.

Bought this car in 2003, only a couple years old and already had 66k on the odometer. 7 years and 120k later, this car is starting to show its age, but it's still quick, agile, and very comfortable. even at over 180k, the engine feels great. like any german car, it requires a little more tlc. change the timing belt when you're supposed to, and don't freak out everytime the check engine light comes on. i may have just gotten a good one, but the only major repairs i've had have been in the last 30k miles or so. ABS controller, tie rods, shocks. like most cars at its age, it's becoming to expensive to maintain, so i'll be trading it in. i guarantee i will cry, this has been a great car.

We love this car. It is so comfortable, secure, tremendous dexterity, tight driving circle, and compares really well in performane and looks and comfort to our friends more expensive BMW's. Have had 9 years, bought new, mid-year, i.e. new model. It was perfect for about 50,000 miles and then things started happening. I just replaced the water pump; the really bad thing is there is no warning that it is going to fail soon... I could have fixed before starting big road trip. But, we may well buy another Passat; they just feel so good to drive and you feel safe. Thinking this time of a lease so as not to keep an older car that we need to worry about.

Now at 99K, been in the shop 7X this year. Airbag fault code, ball joints, brakes, trunk lock failure, intermittent power lock issues, A/C probs, oil leaks, etc, etc.. This car has been nothing but a major headache. I bought it brand new and within 3 weeks the alternator died and had to be replaced. It was still under warranty so I didn't think much about it. The last 4 years I have spent more on repairs then the car is worth and now the catalytic converters are about to go. Last time I went to my mechanic everyone else waiting for their car owned a 2001 passat and we all shared our horror stories. Recently the drains for the sunroof leaked into the car flooding the electronic brain. Another $2,000 repair. I will never own another VW.

WE had a 2002 Acura TL back in 02 and just got this 01 passat in 2010. and it has more options and features then most 2010 luxury vehicles been driving the crap out of it, hard driving, long distance everything not one light has came on (check engine) or anything. its the glx v6 with automatic a/c and have no complaints me and my wife love this car and woudn't trade it for anythimg else, only complaint gas mileage (around city) and cup holders, but eveything else works great even with 145,000 miles you would never guess it had that many it drives like its brand new. anyway all I can say is we love and plan on keeping it tell it dies

Got this 2001.5 model (2001 base with updated looks of 2002) = driving older car that looks like newer. Overall quality of the car was pretty good, no dingelingding during driving, doors closed with a good, Mercedes like smack. Engine was so-so: The turbo kicked in a bit late, which created interesting situations as 4 way Stops: You step on the gas, nothing happens, so you step more into it, and all of the sudden the care takes off (rubber donuts, squeeking wheels, the whole show). Once moving, car was fun to drive. The mirror-adjustment joystick's position is inadequate when you're 6"+ tall: your knee will rip that thing right off while getting in. Had quite a few electrical issues though.

this is a nice looking car and at almost 10 years old doesn't look old or have a dated style to it. But it definitely has its share of problems. Most are problems that vw is aware of and has not corrected...oil leaks that fill the cabin with smoke, bad coil packs, oil sludge, check engine malfunctions...and it ain't cheap to fix! I tried so hard to buy a Mustang or a Honda for my wife, but she insisted she wanted a Passat...she gets very quiet when we have to take it to the shop every month. You pay too much for that cool style with repair bills...

I chose the Passat wagon over the A6 wagon, because the Passat's ride is superior and it has more interior space. In an attempt to protect myself against the VW's poor reliability reputation, I bought a certified pre-owned Passat *and* an extended warranty. Looking back, that was a smart move. However, now that all the warranties have expired, the Passat is breaking down with a vengeance. Every visit to the mechanic costs an arm and a leg, with the most recent visit (alternator + battery) costing me $1500! And it is only March! I am sad the Passat and I have to part ways now, because it is truly a safe and comfortable car. But I love my wallet more.

Got this car at around 18,000 miles and had no problems until 50,000 - right after it was no longer under warranty. Since, I have had the back breaks replaced three times in four years while barely driving it, the front breaks replaced, the rotors replaced, four oil leaks in 6 months, couple coolant leaks, broken keys, seat belt doesn't retract, lights in dashboard starting to fade, two different belts replaced, the whole thing groans when I get into the car, wheels squeak... I am at the mechanics so often they give me a hug when they see me! I'm sure there were more repairs but I've lost track. Bought this car bc of great reputation but too many friends have since had VW lemons. Never again.

I bought this car as it looks cool inside and outdoor with super comfy seats. Overall, I have been pleased and I plan on driving it until it dies. Get the V6 engine! Much more reliable than V4. (I've also never used Premium gas. 87 octane works fine.) Interior and exterior has worn well. Seats are comfy. Ride is quite and comfortable. Paint looks great. But I've had electrical issues similar to others: Headlights burn out often, dashboard and panel lights go out. Repairs are expensive, and some maintenance can only be done at dealerships. If you are buying a used one, make sure you are aware of the VW timing belt/water pump replacement at 105,000 mile-- it's $1300.

Bought the car after wrecking my BMW. The electronic rumors are true about VW's. So many sensors breaking and problems with the car. Had to take out fuse for the horn because it would honk uncontrollably. O2 sensor went out soon after I bought it. Broke down on the highway only after 6 months of owning it because the electronic systems all failed. Plain interior but not a bad looking car. I have owned my used Passat for less than a year. I bought it with 70k miles, and it currently has 85k. In that time I spent $4000 maintaining this car. Engine leaks from everywhere, bad coils, and some preventative maintenance changing the timing belt and water pump. There are still issues with it I simply can't afford to fix. I really wanted to love this car. I really wanted a reliable car. This wasn't the right choice.

Solid feel, great seats, excellent dashboard lights, likes to run like a horse. Has an impressive look. The V6 is a better engine than the Turbo and gets the same gas mileage. Fun to drive. Unfortunately the car must be meticulously looked after. Control arms damage easily, electrical nuisances, check engine light goes on if gas cap is not tight, rotors are prone to warping. Poor cup holders, premium gas. Only 45000 miles.

i bought this car used with 125000 miles on it.The troubles started 2 days after i bought it. First the right cv axle and rigt after i replaced it, the left one went out. There is also a bad oil leak that i cant figure out where it is coming from. I also hear a whining noise when i turn my steering wheel to the left.. This car has just been a nightmare after just three weeks of owning it.

The car was brought brand new, driven with great care, never been in accident, oil changed every 4000-5000 miles. But it died twice and had to be towed in 3 years, same problem - the secondary air pump filled with water! The drive train was covered 100K / 10 years, but that pump was part of the "emission system" so I had to pay $750 each time to have that fixed. The second time it happened I traded it in for a new Toyota 2 days later and never will walk into a VW dealer again.

This is easily the best car I have had and continue to have. It is extremely reliable considering I do push the car hard and never service it more than once a year/ It now has over 285000 miles on the clock and still runs perfect. I also have a Audi A4 (2007) and daughter has a BMW 530 (2006), its definitely a better car than these and a bargain on fuel consumption, maintenance and insurance. The only problem I have is the velvour interior attracts dust and looks out of date now and the build design is boring. But if your not worried about its looks then this is probably the best car in the world. Note its popular with cabbies hence must be reliable and cheap to run.

I love everything aesthetically and performance-wise about this car. But I HATE the repair bills. Last year it cost me $4K in total repairs, and more this year. I've always been good about oil changes and general maintenance, but man o man it got expensive after 100K miles. Tie rods, ball joints, brakes, O2 sensors (and there are a lot of them), catalytic converter. Engine light NEVER goes off. Now it won't pass inspection without $1800 more in repairs and I'd rather spend money on a newer car than old, so I'm saying good bye (and sadly, good riddance) to the first car I ever truly loved. Must say I'm getting a decent trade in allowance from a VW dealer. No one else wants to touch it!

It let me down. I've maintained this car well. Babied it, in fact. Did all of the proper fluid changes, including brake and coolant flushes, rotated tires, etc. But it still began to require expensive repairs around 70,000 miles. Brake pads only lasted around 30K. The exterior and interior held up well. The leather seats are soft and durable without much care and conditioning. The car handles great, does good in the snow, but oil leaks and coolant problems ruined an otherwise great experience. I would've kept buying VW products if they could just hold together to 100,000 miles without expensive repairs. Sadly, they can't. Nice car, just don't keep it much past the warranty.

This was my first "new" car. Had been driving a 93 Buick LeSabre with 100k+ miles that never gave me a problem. Bought the wagon in May '07 for $10,900 w/ 62k miles and spent $4,815.04 in 2008 on repairs ($391 so far in '09). I've lost track of all the issues I've had. Every time I go to the mechanic I ask "what am I doing wrong" the answer is always "it's not you it's the car, it's a VW." To name a few: Catalytic converter, 3 recalls, front pipe leak, and after a day of heavy rain the electrical unit died.

Have to say I was pretty disappointed with this car. It caught my eye right away with its European design characteristics, but I have found that this is one of only a few highlights of driving this car. My Passat has been plagued with electrical problems, from a finicky headlight control switch to internal shorts in the heated seat switches that drain the battery, both which have high repair costs due to diagnostics and labor. Also have had 4 O2 sensors go out, with the replacement parts alone costing $160+. Have also had issues with coolant temp sensors and problems with front end alignment, not too mention a couple rounds of recalls. I really expected more from German engineering.

I have only owned the car for about 8 months, but I absolutely love it. I bought the car from a guy who was meticulous in his maintenance and it has been extremely reliable. The guy also upgraded the suspension with Kuni springs and Eibach struts (plus UHP tires), so it handles ridiculously well. It is more fun to drive than any car I have ever owned and it's a station wagon! We also have a 100 Lb lab/Great dane, and he fits well in the back due to the largest trunk in it's class. I couldn't be happier with the car and it is an absolute pleasure to drive.

Driving this car is exciting and fun. However, maintenance and reliability are a great disappointment. Replacing the transmission at approx. 75,000 miles was not cheap. Servicing is difficult, replacing a thermostat sits way in the back of the engine, requiring lots of dis-assembly. There is an oil leak that has been there for years, it will cost me several thousand $ in labor to fix. 2 power windows just fell into the doors at approx 150,000 miles. It cost me $450 to fix them outside of dealership- parts are expensive and you have to be a technician to get the door panel off. Typical German car, you need special tools to do anything, including removing tires.

We bought this car because it was a Consumer Reports best buy. We've had had so many repairs I can't remember them all (oxygen sensors, coils replaced, air flow meter, and more) and the check engine light stays on constantly. Right now the anti-lock braking system sensor is bad, but it will cost nearly $1,000 to replace, so I drive around with the dash lighting up and blinking like a Christmas tree. We spent over $3,000 in a space of 2 months last year. When parts fail they are *very* expensive to replace - even using a local garage instead of the dealership. Interior: the coating is peeling off the interior plastic surfaces, the armrest latch broke, and the cup holders are flimsy.

Bought new as a second car. In seven and a half years put on 42,000 miles. First thing went the batteries, little over two years old just after the warranty. Then the interior 'moving accessories', ashtray lid, broke twice, I don't smoke use it to keep change. Then the cup holder -terrible design every time I use it it feels that it will break. The wood trim and the shifter was next, new shifter over $180! Antenna and the rubber trim on it and around the base; need to remove the roof panel and the skylight to replace a $.50 gasket cost over 400 bucks! All the rubber trim is falling apart. Then the console mounting brackets broke, had that replaced for $370 Now a $3.5K bill for front end!

I have had this car for 6 years and did the oil change as required. I gave this car to my daughter for college in Maryland last month. She called one night and said that a light was on saying not to drive the car. At 11 PMt, I guess I was supposed to tell her to start walking along the side of the road. (I was thinking rape,or abduction.)I told her to to drive to the nearest gas station and get oil to see if the problem went away. It did not. We had the car towed to the VW dealership in Dover,Delaware. There was a warranty extension on the engine due to many oil sludge problems ruining the engine. Since she drove to the nearest gas station to be safe, they voided the warranty!!!

This car was the German engineering dream I wanted. It started off great but went downhill quickly. If you own any turbo passat, search "Engine Sludge", then walk, no run away from the car. Worse yet, when I could produce the oil change receipts from the life of the car (i bought it used) they would honor their "internal warranty" to replace the engine unless I got $2500 worth of different repairs. I was strong armed by the dealer. Stay away from this car and VW in general. I just got a Merc. Milan. read its reviews and got get one. They are way, WAY better than this hunk of junk. Wanted a VW Passat for a long time. I looked for over 2 months and finally found a car in great shape. I had the mechanics checked out and drove the car for about a day prior to making a decision. I have now paid to replace the head gasket, valve cover seals, viscous fan, electric fan, radiator, electric fan switch, front wire harness and more. I have spent an additional 2700 dollars in repars since early 2007. I run full synthetic oil as recommended by VW. I change it every 3000-4000 miles (5000 recommended). I change filters regularly and run premium fuel (for the turbo). NOBODY should work on VW but dealer or VERY experienced. Dealer will rape you for part AND labor. Buy new w/full warranty

Bought new fall 2000 first problems right away. Coil problems and only 3 months old! Multiple trips to dealer before it was fixed. Over the next 4 years only a few trips to dealer for electrical related problems. Most trips were in the $400.00 range each time. Spring of 06 500 miles from home motor burns up due to oil sludge problem. After being required to produce all receipts for oil changes VW replaces motor and turbo. It's a miracle a trip to dealer that I didn't have to pay for. Except for van rental, crying kids and hotel. All this with only 54K on odometer. 6 trips to dealer since, more electrical problems. We have owned three Volkswagens and loved all of them. The Passat wagon is fun to drive, great on long trips and comfortable for our family of four day to day, not to mention it looks great. It has been in the shop several for various things such as the brake sensors going out, replacing tie-rod ends and cracked oil pan. It developed the typical oil leaks around 80,000 miles and sometimes we still get a whif of oil smell well after it was repaired. It is great to drive and easy to maintain. Find a mechanic who knows Passats inside and out, they have helped us anticipate several things before they became costly. There have been some issues, but I would by another one tomorrow

I have had several repairs made to remedy problem and it still will not go away. Dealers just keep trying different things. The low oil pressure light came on and I had to make a $500.00 repair to get the intake valves replaced. I had the O2 sensors replaced. Camshaft sensor and adjuster replaced. The car drives extremely well. You are basically buying an Audi A6 Quattro, with less to fix. The car handles and stops amazingly well. Instrumentation is great, the cup holders stink and that is fixed in later models. Fit and finish is excellent. The V6 is much better than the 4cyl - less problems. Car runs and looks like new - now I have 160,000 miles! Oil leaks and the cost of parts is a bugger, but if you are religious with the maint enance schedule you shouldn't have any issues. Everything is ridiculous - you spend so much money just to own the car, then (starting at 20,000 miles) I was having problems with the vehicle. I rarely make it more than four years without getting the itch to replace a vehicle for some reason, but I still love getting in this car every day. I bought it used in '02 with 34,000 miles and aside from oil changes, brakes, and tires. The only work I've had to do was replace the belly pan under the engine. I'm meticulous about changing the oil and my mechanic has changed to synthetic oil, probably due to the "oil sludge" problem. It is basically an Audi A4. It is a great looking vehicle loaded with extras, very economical, and reliable at 115,000 miles. It is still a quick car that is FUN to drive. I get compliments on it all the time.

Love this Car!

I am as tough on cars -- I have 4 dogs -- and I am not diligent about maintenance. I have put 170,000 abusive miles on my Passat in six years and have driven it to death. Except for oil issues in last two years -- I have not had much trouble. I replaced the oil pump twice and the water pump once -- that's been it, besides brakes and tires. VW dealer prices are stiff, so I use a reliable local guy for repairs. The Passat's tyling and drivebility are great. All of its interior features continue to work perfectly. The trunk space is great and the back seat collapses for extra room. I think this is a great car and would buy another, even though oil issues prevail. I have learned that timely maintenance is key.

My Passat 4Motion is a "mystery wrapped in an enigma" when it comes to the panels and sensors. However, I've had the (used) car for three years now, and aside from a few electrical issues, it's been pretty reliable. And I love the combination of driving pleasure and practicality. The engine is still quite peppy, it handles very well and has a great turning radius. It was more comfortable than any other midsize wagon/small SUV I test-drove, and can carry everything from a 9 ft. long 2x4, to three kids in car seats, to a fully constructed hutch from Ikea. As a mother, investment property owner, and part-time teacher, I'm very happy with my all-purpose wagon.

I have no complaints about this car except for the chronic softness of the brakes. I would say that this is the best car ever. It's fun to drive and economical. It also has excellent handling and a cockpit-like feel for driver. It is superior feel to the BMW 3-Series. It was engineered by Audi, and this is the poor man's Audi. Actually, I like its looks better.

We bought our Passat new, have always taken care of it, and up until recently we enjoyed it. Taking it into the shop this last time we JUST now found that out there is an OIL SLUDGE issue (which they have KNOWN about but didn't tell consumers!!) - to the tune of $1,500 to "maybe" fix the problem?!! If that doesn't work than they're saying it needs a new ENGINE for $8,500! The car is STILL under warranty, but VW won't cover the repairs because we don't have all our receipts for oil changes! Talk about undermining on the edge of criminal. I will NEVER again buy a Volkswagen again! I guess folks are right : buy a Honda or Toyota and you won't get screwed!

I love my gold 2001 Passat. It is so beautiful and I always end up smiling while I'm driving it. It drives great, looks great, and holds its value. However, it seems to have problems with the drains. First, the air conditioning got moldy in it because there is no drain for it. Then, the sunroof started leaking. Now, the floor in the back gets a nice puddle in it if it rains and I drive. Other than these problems, it has been very dependable. For a first car I really couldn't ask for anything better. At least, after reading the reviews with sludge problems, I hope so...

What a great car! It is smooth, roomy, and has plenty of torque. It is well appointed. The interior craftsmanship is top notch. It is easy to get comfortable in any seat, which makes it great for long trips. It is 5 years old and its still as tight and rattle free as when it was brand new. The exterior is a cinch to care for. It handles well in all weather conditions, I've blown by other chain equipped cars on broken snow floor. This is absolutely the most reliable car I've ever owned.

Its reliability has been significantly better than the new GM vehicles I have purchased in the past. With more hp and the value of a VW (vs. BMW, Volvo, etc.), I would strongly consider buying another the next time I buy.

On July 10, 2006, I took my 2001 Volkswagon Passat wagon to the dealer for a safety recall replacement of of an item related to the right rear wheel. I had called one week earlier to make an appointment, however after showing up, they said that they did not have the part. Today (8/3/06), the same thing happened again! I had even called the day before to confirm that the part was in and that they could do the replacement! Other problems include: 1) a drive train axle broke 18 months after the purchase, 2) none of the cup holders work (they broke off or are stuck closed) and 3) I had to glue the glove compartment shut after months of trying to fix it.

This car was fine until at 36,000 miles I had to spend $1,000 on the front end. It now has 58,000 miles on it, and I have spent over $7,000 in repairs in the past 2 years. I am a safe and careful driver, and have done proper maintenance. The front end just keeps falling apart. The CV joints, CV boots, axles, tie rods, and control arms all had to be replaced on both sides. It has had oil leaks and brake problems too. I am extremely disappointed. I wanted to drive this car for 12 years, not five.

The Passat's excellent driving dynamics and a premium cabin cannot make up for its horrible reliability and incredibly poor dealer service. Even with regular maintenance which is extremely expensive because of synthetic and proprietary fluid requirements and expensive parts, this car has still had numerous part failures in only 60,000 pampered miles of driving. I love European cars but they are too expensive to own.

I absolutely loved my 2001.5 Passat until last weekend when it essentially self-destructed at 76,000 miles. Although I've maintained it religiously, a water pump leak ultimately caused the timing belt to slip off while driving on the freeway, bending the heads and piercing the radiator. The repairs will costing about $5,000. My mechanic says it's a design flaw and could happen again.

Except for annoying problems with lights or dashboard lights, my 2001 Volkswagen Passat was largely OK until around 55,000 miles. At the 55,000 mile mark, the ball joints and tie rods rendered the car unsafe to drive without significant, costly repairs. I've heard this problem isn't uncommon among Passat owners. I've tried to have the front alignment done 2 times in 3 months and it still pulls to the right. The dealership can't seem to figure out what the problems is. The gas milage could be better. This car is defniitely not what I would call efficent. Not to mention that my gas milage has drastically decreased over the last 8 months...with no explanation from the dealership on this problem either. The overall quality of the interior leather is good, however, the driver seat is showing noticable signs of wear on the left side where one enters and exits the vehicle.

Let me start by saying I love my Passat, but my husband hates it (he's a loyal Toyota fan). I dig the performance drive. I can overlook little things, but the number of times I have taken this car to the shop is insane! Repairs range between $300 and $1,500 each, even the little things. I never use anything but synthetic for oil changes, which are $50. Last week the power door lock on the driver's door stopped working, its a $400 repair. I also need tie rods and an alignment. I am considering ditching this fun to drive wagon for a vanilla vehicle. Can VW say low maintenance?

I have put 15,000 miles on my 2001 Volkswagen Passat 1.8T with no major problems and I REALLY, REALLY enjoy driving it. My car has an Autotech rear sway bar and a GIAC chip (www.giacusa.com) which makes it quite fun to drive. it's sure footed, roomy, quiet, has a STRONG midrange and has responsive, well-weighted steering. The interior trim quality needs improving and yes, the headlights burn out quickly but these are not critical flaws. I just drove from Boston to LA and it was AWESOME. This is a great touring car and it really surprised me in the twists! It's no Honda Accord but I think that's a good thing - for a little more attention to maintenance, you can have a car with a lot more character. It is a nice sleeper.

This otherwise enjoyable and luxurious family sedan is proving unreliable in the long-term. My repairs in the past nice months include: new vacuum hoses; rear brake rotors; power steering rack; and inner/outer tie rods. To add insult to injury, VW dealers charge outrageous rates for routine service: $575 for 40,000 mile service; $60 for oil change; $140 for a brake fluid flush! Sadly, with the mounting repair and service costs, it's time to ditch this pariah for something much more reliable.

It is a shame that this car has rubbed me the wrong way because I really like the Passats, espeically the new 2006 model. I have had the engine cleaned 3 times because of oil sludge, I have changed it with sythetic oil religiously. The majority of the time, VW has waived any cost, but it is a hasele to take it in every week. Simply changing the battery or air filter requires a trip to the shop. I had both the daytime wiring harnesses replaced and the daytime light replaced twice in one year. I also had work done on the CV joint, brakes, and the check engine light came on twice. I love the car, but it would take some convincing to buy another.

This issue was finally resolved; however, now have fluid level evaporation for the oil, power stearing and coolant. There are no lights that indicate that the levels are below the minimum level. If i lose all my coolant, I am in trouble. My car is only 4 years old with 36,000 miles. It shouldn't have these problems. In addition there is a noise under the car they can't resolve. I just took my passat in for the oil pressure light coming on AGAIN, and found out that it will be $2000 to fix due to oil sludge. This is a VERY common problem occuring in the 2001 Passats. Please ask about this problem before you consider buying one...it is a very expensive problem to fix, and will continue to occur regardless of any repairs. I am trading my car in ASAP. I enjoyed driving this car for about the first 48000 miles. Then problems began to occur with an "oil sludge" problem. I am told this is a significant problem with the 2001 Passat. Most recently my Passat was at the dealership for about $1000.00 in parts and service and was driven only 7 miles before the same indicator light again appeared. I have already purchased another car due to the problems and unreliability of the Passat but at this point I am unable to even sell this one until this problem is taken care of.

I had to replace the stock tires at 18k mi. and replaced the front and rear brake rotors at around 21k miles. Now have 40k miles and rear rotors are warped again (I don't drive aggressively and use the car to commute 15 miles back and forth to work). Replaced 2 headlamps, 3 tail lamps, and the latch broke on glove box at 23k miles that dealer wouldn't cover under warranty. Great style, works fine in two years until last year when suddenly the oil light came on 4000 miles after last oil change, took to the dealership and they told me the engine is burning oil in 1 qt. per 1000 mile, which I suspect even higher, the warranty forfeited because I didn't keep all the oil change record. the maintenance is fairly expensive overall, I took the car to the same dealership recently for battery change and it cost $400. I do mostly city driving in my 2001 Volkswagen Passat New GLS 1.8T. There is a lack of power while in 1st gear. Getting into 2nd gear still has a lot of resistence. In the 29,000 miles that I have had this car, the tires went bald, the driver door latch stopped working and I had to hold the door closed while I drove it to the dealer, the driver's head light died, there have been rattles, the ride quality diminished (takes bumps harshly), the auto up driver window hasn't worked once since day one, and it is true what they say about VW service...short and rude. I pity those who have bought the $70,000 Phaeton and have to put up with VW's dealer attitudes. I'll go back to Lexus soon.

After researching many AWD vehicles, including SUVs, I bought a Volkswagen Passat AWD GLX because of the handling and many options that you get for the money. Well, you get what you pay for. As soon as I got my car, I brought it in three times for warped rotors and was told by VW each time that there was nothing wrong. Literally, as soon as the warranty was up, VW agreed that my rotors were warped and charged me $700 to fix them. When I called the main VW office, they didn’t want to hear about the unfair treatment that I received. Then one year and $1,200 later, my ignition coil needed to be replaced. Now another year later, I have another hefty bill to pay for the car's throttle body & catalytic converter to be replaced.

Only complaint is quality of the leather. Looks great everywhere except driver's seat, weathers too quickly, but gets used 90% more than others.

Great car to drive. Very comfortable and powerful on the highway. V6 is the way to go. The leather seats are the most comfortable I've ever had. Handling is better than several sports cars I've had. Monsoon sound system is a real blast -- best I've owned. Not too much bad things to say about this car.

I just traded my Volkswagen Passat in for a Honda Accord. After 3 years and thousands of dollars, I rather have a car that runs than one that looks good. I have had a wide range of problems, from expensive repairs such as having the entire engine rebuilt due to oil sludge issues, having my radiator disintegrate at 67000 miles, replacing the instrument panel which runs most of the electrical system, cv boots busted, vacuum hose replaced, and a number of blown sensors and small repairs such as glove box and window controls breaking. This car was towed in 3 times in 6 months. I feel bad for whoever buys it next.

My B5 2001 Passat now has 85,000 miles on it and still feels like new. We bought the car after finding the A4 to be too small and the A6 too big. This A4 based car is the perfect compromise. The interior is great looking and built to last. The leather has no creases or cracking, even after 85,000 miles of driving. There are no interior rattles at all. While the 4motion is fantastic for a wet and snowy climate, I'd pass on it if I lived somewhere I didn't absolutely need it as the fuel mileage hit is pretty big.

Look Out! VW is misleading customers by extending the internal engine warranty by 8 Years, Unlimited Mileage. They have notified customers of an oil sludge issue in August 2004. What do you know...my car is currently in the dealership with this exact issue at 63,000-miles and VW will not honor the warranty because my oil changes did not occur exactly at the 5,000-mile intervals. If you want a car that sits in the dealership a lot and will cost $$ in repairs (this repair is running $2500) then this is the car for you. VW is passing an engineering flaw in the 1.8t engine over to customers, by telling customers that it is normal for a vehicle's engine to fail.

I bought a silver '01 tiptronic with leather interior (the only way to go in my opinion) and it is like no other car I have driven...or seen for that matter. It looks like a much more expensive German car (I got my beauty for 16K) and it drives like no Japanese car you will drive. The looks are unmatched. Who wants to drive an Accord?! EVERYONE has one!!! Drive a VW. You won't regret it.

The original warranty was for 2 years or 24000 miles. The extended warranty was for 10 years or 100000 miles. I had engine trouble couvered by the extended warranty. The fuel injectors were changed per a service bulletin as was a gas cap grounding problem. I had to change the battery Dec 2003. In June of 2004 the battery again had to be changed. Though covered by the dealer it really wasted my time. Changing the original battery cost me 215.00 because the dealership said they had to reprogram certain electronic features.I later found out that my model does not need reprogramming when the battery is removed. Over all this car is fun to drive but it suffers from to many mechanical problems.

I love driving this car. After having Japanese cars for years, this is so much more fun to drive. However, reliability has become a problem. First there was the issue with the coils, then replacing the rear wheel well, now the oil pump. Although VW eventually came through with replacing the coils, they have weaseled their way out of paying for the oil pump. Also a few small, but annoying failures-driver's side visor snapped off, the turn signal switch failed, one of the vanity lights failed.

DRIVERS WANTED. Well they got one here and THIS IS MY BIGGEST COMPLAINT with my 2001.5 Passat. It has a more than occasional acceleration hesitation problem and may hesitate then lurch forward uncomfortably when moving from a stop or slow start. Especially noticeable when leaving intersections to merge in with traffic. Not sure if this is a design flaw in the transmission or what. VW Mechanics are clueless to the cause/fix. DRIVERS SHOULD HAVE THE ACCELERATION POWER AVAILABLE WHEN NEEDED vice BEING LEFT OUT THERE HANGING. I have also had problems with oil leaks on the cam seals approx. every 45000 miles, and electronic problems. Overall a solid car to own.

I bought itused and I have never had any problems with it. It only has 30k miles on it and it has just hit its stride. It is great car and it habdles excellently.. I traded Audi A4 for a Passat. Other than losing the name-plate and sportier handling (esp. stability at high speeds and on curvy roads) that Audi A4 offers, I'm very satisfied with my Vee-Dub. It’s reliable, and built like the upscale luxury sedans. Materials quality is great. I got rear- ended once but the bumper bounced back out leaving no scratch. But the panel and other stuff inside the trunk were slightly damaged. I replaced everything anyway (including the bumper) since insurance paid. When I decide to change, I’ll most probably go for another Passat with more HP. I haven’t tried 4Motion yet, may be I should.

I never had to go to a shop to fix anything other than the standard 5K oil changes and maintenance. Given 90% of my mileage is highway, I haven't replaced any part of the car till now except the front headlights at 42K miles. Well every time I go on trips and drive around in a lousy compact car, I realize how I value my car so much. I have driven this car at 100mph occasionally over brief periods although I would advice against doing it. A crash at this speed is a ticket to instant death. It is truely a autobahn car. Last time it was a little duel with a Audi TT roadster who finally decided to drive behind me for the next 30 miles.

I based this car based on a recommendation and the lack of competition. Within 40,000 miles I have had to ake this car back numerous times for electrical problems. I have gone through three sets of headlights and three electrical clusters (Not sure of technical term). This cluster controls all interior lights within the car. Fortunatley I bought the extended warranty or I would have been in trouble by now. Each time I have had this cluster replaced it has managed to go faulty again within a year. To date we have spent almost $4,000 in maintenance related issues on this car.

The wagon replaced an Audi A4, to better lug around 2 kids & their hockey gear. We gave up a scant amount of interior luxury, and an imperceptible amount of performance, for more room & lots of fun. The engine burned a bit of oil irregularly, for which we got the "measure it again" run-around, and the electrical system needed tweaking, but it was a minor nuisance overall. This car went to 65000 miles in 2.5 years, and we traded it in for the 2004 model.

A fantastic buy. Mine was one of the first 2001.5 "New" Passat delivered to the area. The 4 Motion has been a dream in the cold frozen tundra of NE Ohio during the winter months. No problems with the car and I have 62000 miles on it. I experienced minor damage to the car in a collision when a vehicle hit me at about 45 miles an hour... I came out without a scratch... I attribute the car with being able to take a huge hit and keep on ticking.

I bought this car, used, as a certified car from a VW dealership. It had 51k miles on it, but was very clean. The brakes were brand new (metallic pads). Now, 6,000 miles later, the rotors are starting to warp. We just got back from a trip into the mountains, and the upper rpm power is not very impressive. The 22.5 mpg average fuel consumption is a little lower than expected for an auto in mixed driving, especially with the price of premium. I live in Phoenix, and I bought the car in December. Now that it is getting warmer (low 90s), the AC pull-down time is longer than expected.

I purchased this car used as a VW Certified vehicle for my wife. Since, I own a new 2003 Mazda 6s, I was amazed at how well this car compares and excels vs. the Mazda. Once you get used to some of the quirky German engineering controls for wipers and onboard computer, all the controls become intuitive. This car is as fun to drive as any I have driven and when compared to my Mazda 6s, exceeds in just about every category. I especially like the cool blue glow of the instruments. The 4Motion is great in the snow and ice of New England winter's.

We bought this vehicle new in 2002. Within three weeks, two taillights had gone out (bulbs). At 45,000mi the rear brake calipers had to be replaced as they were warped. Warranty did not cover it. On long trips, both my wife and I find the seats very uncomfortable, causing backache! Two speakers were blown with the Monsoon system. Great styling, no doubt. However, concerns about reliability haunt me. As this is my wife's car, I am used to the rock solid reliability of myToyotas. The Passat is a great road car though. Would I buy one again? Nope.

Great looking and equiped car for the money, basically an Audi but for thousands less. However, the build quality leaves a lot to be desired, squeeks and rattles abound and are very hard to fix. The turbo lag of the 1.8T is annoying and the engine is noisy. The MAF sensor went out at 32,000 miles ($500 to replace). The rear seats are a major hassle to fold down and the glove box and cup holders are a joke. The headlights are also dangerously underpowered on their low beam setting. Overall a good car, but disappointing build quality and reliabilty.

My failure to do so taught me an expensive lesson. At 39,000 miles my wagon's cam shaft siezed. VW voided the powertrain warranty because I was unable to provide documentation of 30K and 35K service. Factory rebuilt engines cost $6,100 installed. OUCH!

Owned since April 2001. The car is a delight to drive on the highway. It is smooth and relaxed. It looks beautiful, corners well, and feels solid. However, in traffic it is frustrating. Almost all of the power is obtained with the gas peddle only about half way down. Push down further and not much else happens. It makes the car feel real fast during a test drive but frustrating and very difficult to drive smoothly in a start and stop environment, such as through city streets. According to VW, this is all a "consequence of the design" and there is nothing they can do about it. All in all, I probably wouldn't buy this car again.

Ungaraged, the car looks fabulous. However, my problems started before the first scheduled maintenance, and went on and on. Had to miss work quite a lot. What option do you have when you have invested over 33K on a car. For details on what happenned please visit my posting on http://www.consumeraffairs.com/automotiv e/vw_smoke.html. This manufacturer is nothing but problems. Please review thoroughly before you make a decision to buy this car. The reviewers give high marks to this car. Overall, I've been absolutely thrilled with this car. I've driven 60K miles in just over two years, and the only problem was losing an oxygen sensor ~50K. Handling in adverse conditions has been confident and sure, and it drives just as comfortably at 25mph as it does at 95mph. I've been impressed with the cargo capacity with the back seats down. And the gas mileage has been great. I often get better than 30mpg on long freeway trips.

We have had this car for a year. This is the nicest car i have ever owned. This is out of ten. It reminds me of the first car I ever owned which was a 1972 mercedes 280sel 4.5. You know solid and fast. We have had no problems until recintly. Both headlights went poof. I have read in the message boards that this is a 60.00 replacement. We bought this as a certified used car so hopefully they are covered under warrenty. We have the 5 speed. The car is comfortable, stable, and fun to drive. When my wife lets me have it.

The main problem with the car is a lag on the transmission - when you step on the gas, you wait & then it engages. I have also taken it to the dealer 3 times to fix another transmission issue, when coming to a full stop, often I hear a 'clunk' which sounds as if the transmission is moving forwards. Dealer tells me that it's nothing.. hmmmm.

The moon roof is so loud when open that we could not enjoy the ride with it at all. So I went out to buy the wind deflector for it. It does a great job, but then, when the window is closed it generates a lot of extra noise. I still don't know if I liked with or without it better.

Fun, safe, quick and confortable. I have 80000 miles in less than 2 1/2 years. No problems. The car is fun to drive and I made it even more so by adding the AVGO ECU chip. Now it has approximately 217 hp and 200+ torque. At 80000 miles I would normally trade by now, but can't get the chip for the 2003 yet, and can't find anything as good at or near the same price. It handles better than the 2004 Maxima, 2003 Altima, 2003 Mazda 6 and 2003 Acura TL/Cl Type S's. All of which I test drove this week.

Overall, the car runs well. However, trying to perform basic maintainance (such as replacing a light blub) is impossible to do on your own. Had over 6 headlight bulbs blow out over a 2 year period, and VW does not seem to see a problem with the vehicle. They blame the manufacturer of the bulb. Had to take many trips to the dealer for this little inconvencience.

We bought the GLS V6 after weeks of research on family wagons. It all came down to this car and the Volvo V70. The Volvo V70 had very cheap interior, weaker engine, less performance, and very uncomfortable seats for $7K more!! The decesion was an easy one. We feel we got a lot more car for the money we spent. This car is bordering on luxury auto for $24K. It handles great. The engine is very responsive. It has tons of room if you fold the back seats down. The only problems we have had have been minor electrical issues. The fron headlight ($50!!! at the dealer), and the remote transmitter (warranty) had to be replaced.

A terrific value compared to my previous Saab 9-5 and Saab 9000. Very little, if anything "lost" by "stepping down" to the Passat. The 1.8T engine and manual transmission are both terrific. Great low end torque and plenty of power. Great highway mpg - - over 30 mpg when cruising all day 75- 80mph. Excellent fit and finish throughout. Monsoon radio system is very good. Precise and predictable handling. Comfortable seats with good leg room. Drivers and passengers immediately think this car costs much more than it does. While the Camry and the Accord may be a bit more reliable in the long run, they are transportation appliances. This is a true German sedan.

I love my VW Passat. When I was shopping for a vehicle, I originally thought that I wanted a Honda Accord. However, when I visited Edmunds.com and read the reviews for the Honda, it said to also check out the VW Passat. I'm glad I did! I read its review and then test drove it! I've never been happier. It rides smooth and I haven't had any problems. Also, it comes with a lot of standard safety features that are not standard on an Accord, like the side curtain airbags. I'm really impressed with this car! The only drawback is that it is a little more expensive for servicing than an Accord.

This car now has about 35000 miles on it, and there isn't a single squeek, rattle, or annoying vibration sound to be heard anywhere. A rock solid machine, in the finest German tradition. The 1.8T rocks and yet gives me like 29 MPG while doing freeway speeds of 70+ MPH. The clutch has a nice full "throw" to it, and the braking is excellent. Only design flaw I can find is that the drink holder is hard to move to the closed position after it's been opened. And more importantly, it covers the opened ashtray when deployed. This makes it difficult to plug in my cell phone recharger into the lighter receptacle. Big Ger...the Aerospace Guy

I own 2 Passats, one of them has for the most part (with the exception of 2 of the cheap Cooper tires they give you) blowing unexpectantly, been fine. The other, has had problems, including me having to fork over $2,500 to replace the clutch at 35k miles. I don't ride the clutch, I don't do any crazy teenager driving with it, so I was a bit surprised to find it go at such a low mileage. Of course, VW was quick to point out that this is a "wear and tear" part. I have also had problems like others have mentioned with oil leaks, electronic problems with CD player, etc. I will NEVER buy another VW again.

Not so thrilled anymore.

My Passat has occassional acceleration hesitation and may lurch forward uncomfortably when moving from a stop. Truth be told, I bought this car for my dog... My 98 VW GTI VR6 wasn't quite big enough for all of our stuff for all of our adventures. After much research and forethought, we upgraded. The car is essentially an Audi A6 Avant in street clothes. I had it all... it was sexy, practical, and drives like a sports car [not quite as zippy as the GTI VR6, but still quite zippy!]. It's been two years now, and after several road trips [even took to sleeping in it rather than hassle with the tent!], snowboarding trips, home depot shopping safaris, and the occassional [I wish] commute, I'm happy to report I would make the same choice all over again. It's a fabulous car all around.

Ok, it has been a good car but there have been some problems. First, in the last three months we have heard a rattling sound in the car....Over head cam tensioner needs replacing...., the running day lights have gone out twice...cheap bulbs burn out. The turning lights switch burnt out...needed replacing. Overall a good vehicle but beware it does not get mileage in stop and go. I live in NYC and my city mileage is like 170 miles on a full tank (12 gals). Better for surburban or rural open roads type atmosphere. Would probably have bought an SUV...

I L-O-V-E this car. High end torque- great for passing on the highway. Truly a great car to own. Have the five speed- provides a great amount of control. Great combination of feeling substantial and safe on the road, but still can actually FEEL the road. Absolutely ZERO complaints. Actually- I have one- my husband has "stolen" my car b/c he "says" his car is about to run out of miles on its lease. Can't wait till we get rid of that car and I get mine back. With only 14K miles this car has already had five (5) items that needed repair. Breather hose, vacuum hose, temperature sensor, ignition coil, entire dashboard gauge assembly. It seems to have been poorly assembled and the dealer can't get parts. 1 to 3 weeks wait. I worry every time I take the car out of town. It's like the old clunkers I had in school. I have parked side by side to a 323i BMW, and the Passat has better ergonomics, design, layout, and comfort. Everywhere I go people ask me about the car. They want to sit in the drivers seat and take off! This 1.8T 2001.5 Sedan has serious POWER! I raced my grandma's Lincoln sedan and beat the snot out of her in the quarter mile. This car simply blows away anything in it's class in terms of quality and drivability. It is an absoulte dream to own. Sure, it is a bit of a premium compared to other cars, but it is worth every penny. And as for "higher end cars" near it's class, still no comparison. The Passat is a classy car that is fun to drive. We (4 of us) drove this car from Dallas to Toronto and it performed flawlessly. Very smooth and comfortable. I drove 8 hours per day but did not feel tired at the end of the day. I was amazed at what we packed into the back of this wagon AND still could use the privacy screen.

While I enjoyed my vehicle in the beginning, the car has dissappointed me in terms of reliability. It was a fun car to drive, but a combination of nagging problems and an uncaring dealership in hayward has compounded the problem. My initial problems covered by my lousy 2 year 24K warranty were: busted trunk latch, 2 busted headlights. Now, after my warranty has expired, my radio is completely dead. Close to 300bucks. 50bucks for the dealer to tell me it was broke. I can feel my power steering going out, my brakes will make a funny sound when I turn and brake, and engine will make rattling sounds that I've never heard before. Wish me luck.

This is the best car all round. My friends wish I would let them drive it. Not only is it fast, but I raced my friend's Porsche boxster and won (not by much, but I won). The Safety is top- notch, I crashed my old passat and didnt even get a scratch. The control and handeling is awesome--very predictable.

The new 2002 Volkwagen Passat pushes up the benchmark for all mid-sized sedans. The interior of this car could be found in the 7 series BMW or some other upscale luxury car. Fit and Finish are above reproach. Materials are top notch and the design is very pleasing to the eyes. Especially the biege leather option. The only failings I can find are the rear windows don't roll all the way down and also do not have the auto-up and auto-down as the front windows have. Xxterior is flawless on mine. Downside is exterior design. A6 is prettier. Engine compartment of V6 models must be seen. Neatest underhood I've seen. A little pricey, but worth it.

I expected alot when I bought my Passat and it has exceeded my expectations. It has been a blast to drive with the 5 speed and I get 30+ mpg when driving on the highway. The ride is great as it provides a smooth ride (since it is a family sedan after all) yet when you want some handling, its pretty good.

We have had our Passat for 4 months now and have thoroughly enjoyed it. It drives wonderfully- brakes quickly when needed and provides a smooth, quiet ride. We are looking forward to our firs long road trip in this car!

I wish I could write great things about this car because it really is fun to drive. The seats provide great comfort for long drives and I love the styling. However, the car has spent 50 days in the shop in the last 6 months. It started with an oil leak that took tearing the engine down 3 times. I also have had a coolant leak and the transmission has leaked twice. The last transmission leak also featured a broken windshield when I went to pick it up. Then it was scratched installing the new windshield. Those aren't VW's fault. But I've been told that there are problems with both the 4 and 6 cylinder head design that causes leaks.

good for small family, icy roads

Unlike the typical 4wd/awd vehicle, this is one that always smoothly applies power to all 4 wheels. It doesn't rely on a slow-responding multi-plate clutch ("computer" systems) or viscous fluid. The even power split prevents slipping from starting, and recovery is easy. Getting a 4-wheel alignment makes a huge difference with this car. The back is roomy. Visibility is great but for the rear head rests sticking up.

The Passat is unbelievable value for the money. It's incredibly fun to drive- very comfortable, too. The longer I own it,the more I like it,and I loved it the day I bought it. The exterior design is very pleasing. The domed roof is just now being copied (Altima);it is the handsomest sedan on the road right now. There is just something very engaging about it.

The New Passat has been a dream to drive, it's really a great family car, and with the 5speed, gives you sportslike performance. We're buying a 2002 to join our 2001!

After driving my Passat for a year and a half and putting over 26k miles on it, I am still amazed by how the car does so many thing so well. Its wonderfully comfortable (I'm 6'4") and not tiring even on 500 mile trips to Maryland from New England. I use Michelin Pilot Alpin snow tires in the winter and am able to go through almost anything. No surprises in a hail storm with 2 inches of slippery hail on the roadways. I love this car. The engine sounds great and pulls from idle. In traffic I can put it in 1st, 2nd or 3rd gear and it will pull itself uphill without me pressing on the gas pedal.

Quiet, comfortable, luxurious, understated elegance. Drives like an audi a6, only livelier because its not contending with power draining four wheel drive. Fit and finish are excellent. Have had only to replace a tail light in 20 thousand miles. Only complaint: seat heaters are only effective at the top setting (5).

Bigger than the A4, roomy, great avg gas mileage (27mpg with auto). Turbo is responsive; feels like a V6, no lag.

7,000 miles. Tiptronic trans is great for heavy traffic and freeway ramps. All materials and assembly are 1st class. Test drive it at night: the lighting is "wow". It eats up the interstate-great chasis/ride/handling!
