Daughter's First Time Buying Experience Without Dad

1.2
Bojangles on 03/25/2016

Customer Service: 1.0 Friendliness: 1.0 Pricing: 2.0 Overall Experience: 1.0

I recently was looking for a car for my daughter on line and found a KIA Sorento posted. Now my daughter is a single parent with poor credit but does have a decent job with limited income but has enough money for a considerable down payment more than half of the balance to purchase the car with a trade-in Hyundai Sante Fe, plus extra money from a recent tax return equaling a significant amount for cash down payment of which she showed and can make payments for the difference totaling couple thousand dollars. The salesperson humiliated my daughter saying she doesn't have enough income and would need a co-signer assuming less risk from the dealership by taking a chance on my daughter if not being able to pay a couple thousand dollars. She even provided pay stubs from Home Depot to show she can pay in good faith. The salesman was a jerk I am out-of-state but wanted her to test the waters in purchasing a car on her own and helping guide her to a dealer willing to work with her. I would not recommend this dealership to anyone with a poor credit situation they simply don't want to bother with you. I felt this should be shared. This is not the way to treat a customer, especially a first time buyer and send them away. His comment was to her "We sell 200 plus cars a month here!" Who gives a xxxx there is a difference to selling and selling with good customer service relations so they feel that they were treated properly in the transaction and process of buying a car. It is supposed to be a satisfying experience for the customer and the salesperson.

this is the worst car i have ever encountered. i bought mine used less than a year ago with 89K miles, now at 94K and i have put almost $3000 into this car. Tie Rods, axels, timing belt, windows, distributor, engine coils, & spark plugs have been replaced, power steering fluid leaks badly, engine heats up and needs new coolant all the time. car runs out of time often and it costs about $70-90 for a vw specialist to work on the car. this thing is a death trap, i wouldnt even take a free one. BUYER BEWARE. glove box and rear upholder breaks easily and front upholder only big enough for a soda can. Also now i need to use fully synthetic oil to keep the engine from misfiring/ coils going bad.

Buyer be mindfull it's 10 yrs old

I've had my car for 5 years just paid it off a year ago. Now the problems have started. Everything was wonderful, at first. 3 days before christmas the window fell down and i couldn't bring it back up.The cost to fix it was $500. My starter gets stuck sometimes i have not fixed it yet it will cost me $450. Now this week my air went out and it cost me $650. Then the back window came off the convertible and no one can just fix it, i need a new top and window which is going to cost me $1400. Very bad week. I love my car but its costing me a lot right now and i wonder what will break next?

Love this car!

I bought this car a year ago with 100,000 miles on it expecting that with mileage like that, it may need some maintenance and repairs. I have driven it about 17000 miles and all I have had to do is change the oil and give her a tune up. It really hasn't given me any major trouble and it is so much fun to drive. My advice would be to shop carefully and find one that appears to have been well taken care of. I looked at at least 10 of these before I chose this one. It seems to be one of those cars that young drivers beat the heck out of and can't or don't take care of them properly so there are a lot of used/abused cabbies out there. But when you find a good one, grab it. You won't regret it

This was my dream car now it's my nightmare. It's possessed. The Windows never want to do what you want them to do. The car sometimes turns on with out the ac working then you have to restart it. The horn honks itself when its too hot out and its just nickel and diming me. It's cute and I can put the top down and I don't owe anything on it so thats the only reason I'm still putting up with this car but as soon as I get my promotion its gone.

I got my 2001 VW Cabrio as a high school graduation gift two years ago. My dad was so proud that he could get it for me, but now we are very very upset! It's been one thing after another with this car! It may be cute, but the upkeep and all the money going into it is an awful lot of hassle. First both front window don't roll down or up. My AC doesn't work. Timing belt wore before it should have. My seat is broken, my shifter shaft is completely worn. I took it to the dealer two days ago and the price to fix the AC and the shifter shaft was 1900. You'd think because it was German designed you get what you paid for, no. You don't. Don't get this car. it is cute but you are naive if you do.

This is my first car and I couldn't be happier with it. I learned how to drive stick-shift on it and the 5 speed is fun to drive. I have no problems with it breaking down, but it's not a winter car. My top leaks when it rains hard and if I go through too big of a puddle the car freaks out.

I love my car

I have had this car for 9 years and counting. Finding parking is easy due to its size and maneuverability. The only time I ever had any trouble with it was when I took it to a non-VW specialist for a simple oil change. They told me that I need to fix all sorts of things and 2 weeks later my car started leaking oil. I took it back to my VW specialist. It took him a few times to figure our what was wrong but he did not charge me additional when I had to take it back. He fixed it and I haven't had any problems since. Bottom line: if you don't take it to the dealer, take it to someone that specializes in VWs. If I need to get a new car, I will get a VW just so I can keep my mechanic.

Don't be fooled by it's look, its bad!

I love convertibles and thought that the Cabrio would be perfect for me. This is my second one and this one is still nothing but problems. I have owned this car for about 2.5 years, and have been stranded about 7 times. Everything in the car is going and I cannot handle it anymore. I have spent more fixing this car than what it's worth today (around $4,000) However, the car does does get about 35 MPG on the highway, and I love the options it comes with. DO NOT BUY IT!

Never again will I buy a VW

This is a horrible car! We've had nothing but problems. We fix one, then another quits working. We get water in the floorboard - we've replaced the seals and top - still wet. All the dashboard lights light up - don't light up. The manual lock on the driver's side quit working and, of course, so did the remote. That's another $500-$1000. Sometimes the key will start the engine, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it leaks, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I could go on and on - bottomline, stay away!

Ugh.

I am so frustrated w/his vehicle. I purchased this car used in 2006. It has been nothing but problems since day 1. I don't spend less then $1k every time it goes in the shop. Everything that could break, bust, freeze, etc. has. I've lost numerous hubcaps (strange I realize), one day while driving the interior light switch just fell off, another day the glove box handle popped off & landed in the floor board. The interior fabric is like velcro, it literally takes me an hour to vacuum. Of course everyone thinks it's 'cute'...I remember when I thought that too, now I'd love to drive it into a concrete wall.

I'll never buy a Volkswagen again. Door handles, glove box, knobs falling off/melting, even though handles have been replaced 3 times. Ditto for random indicator lights and windows that go up and down whenever. Worst though, are the tie rods. First replaced when car was 3ish. Four years later, we're sitting in a hotel 4 hours from home waiting o/n for new TRs to be delivered tomorrow b/c car is un-drivable - at a total cost of $1K for hotel, rental car and repair. And we'll have to drive back in a week to pick up the car once it's fixed. Car sits in garage 9 of 10 days and is used only for highway miles, so our driving not at fault. Our mechanics unanimously agree car is total crap.

Awesome!

This car is great! It gets great gas mileage, the CD player doesn't skip, the truck is pretty roomy for a small car, and easy to park/maneuver. I bought this car used, but it only had one owner who had all the routine maintenance preformed on time at a VW dealership, so I'm loving it!! There are no mechanical problems and it has almost 70k miles on it now. Great car for the money!! (And it's cute!)

I've had to replace the exhaust system, the ignition coil, the transmission, broken glove box, the mass air flow sensor is giving me issues now, and this summer the throttle sensor needed replacement. I think the air-flow and throttle are related problems. Basically my engine light never goes off. I had to replace the transmission-5 speed at 59,000 and VW would not honor the powertrain warranty of 100,000 said it was a wear and tear item. I know there is more that I'm leaving out. The car needs a journal just to keep track of repairs. My mechanics feel sorry for me. I have been stranded or broken down about 8 times with this car. Its a shame because it was my 1st new car. Bad experience..

So far I love my cabbie even though it is my first REAL day with it, I love the fact that it is a convertible, and the black interior is one of my favorites, it has more interior room than my old Integra in the back which is a plus for me, I hate the fact that EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING is manual! The windows, the top, I mean it's a 2001 not a 1974! It could have been made a little more up to date.

Love It!

We bought two 2001 cabrios basically for convertible fun and best heat and traction in our 30 below winters. Cars are a lot of fun but tons of problems, would not recommend them even with extended warranty; only for summer fun, service from dealership is great but next cars will not be unreliable vw's. Will miss the small size convert.

I have had a hate-hate relationship w/this car. It was my dream car. Has given me problems since the day I bought it. If I hadn't bought it used it would probably classify for the Lemon Law. Catalytic converter, O2 sensor, engine light has been on, air bag light has been on. The latest is the coolant leak. I will never buy another VW EVER again. I probably wouldn't take one even if someone gave me one for free!! It has cost me thousands of dollars to keep it running and I only drive it 10000 miles a year. Can't wait to get rid of it.

I've had sooo many hours of fun in this zippy little convertible. Love the 5 speed transmission, lots of fun to drive. After 96000 miles, I can honestly say this car has been a dream in that it required only regular routine maintenance (oil changes, scheduled tuneups), & at about 60000 miles it needed a new muffler/pipe, & at 95000 miles two belts showed wear so I replaced them & (preventatively) the timing belt. Other than that, this car has just taken care of itself. :) The seats are a little small for someone with a bigger fanny, but otherwise comfy. The covering on the interior door handles peeled early on and i was not happy with how VW handled that. But that was the only glitch.

This car is a money pit. Get ready to pay. The door handles, the mass airflow sensor (a ten year part), the catalytic converter, handle from the glove box, 3 mufflers, heated mirrors and the entire exhaust system went and had to be replaced. The windows go up and down at will, the "dealer disabled" security system locks itself at will like when I am driving, which sets off the alarm, the check engine light comes on constantly and my mechanic shudders when he seems me coming.

Good deal!!!

Don't be folled by its cute appearance. There is a reason why VW no longer makes these. It is strange how all the problems started to occur on mine right after the 25,000 mile factory warranty was up. I have never had a car before that has needed a new exhaust system at 25,000 miles, not to mention new brakes immediately after that. In addition, be warned that you can only get engine coolant for this car at a VW or Audi dealer service departments, which can also lead to expensive repairs and a long wait to even get an appointment. For those of you who are winter drivers, the Cabrio for sure is not the car you want to deal with snow and slush in.

I made the mistake of not purchasing the extended warranty and it has cost me at least $6,000 to repair my car in the 6 years I have owned it. The mass airflow sensor has gone twice, I've had problems with the doors, windows, pistons in the convertible roof, and I have just had to pay $1,500 for a leak detection pump, serpentine belt and starter coil. Each time the dealer has to run a diagnostic, it costs another $94. Although I really like the car, if I had known how much it would cost to repair at the time I purchased it, I would not have made the same decision.

This is a fun car, an inexpensive convertible. I've owned it for almost 5 years and thank goodness I bought an extended warranty, but I'm getting worried because it expires in a few months. First the window fell out. Then the door locks went and the check engine light went on. One was covered, the other was not. They did cover the Mass Air Flow device last week for second problem. Also this week, had a bill for over $1,300 for the A/C evaporator! This should have lasted for the life of the car! The whole dash had to come out. Luckily the ext. warranty paid for $1,100 of it! My car has the same problems as some others do too... door handles, etc.

I love this car because the seats, pedals, dash are all the perfect size and adjustability in relation to each other in my opinion. There are many cars that don't adjust to comfortably accomadate shorter people. The headrests are actually usable. The dash and hood are in the perfect spots to maximize visibility. So is the gear shift. I have a bad back, but I could drive this car for hours. I also love how it looks! It's very reliable and runs quietly. Love it!

I read many reviews on this car before buying. Here's what I didn't know. CHEAP, cheap interior. Cloth seats really show dirt. Interior peeling. Power windows fixed 3 times. AXEL broke at 4 years 54K miles. Plastic parts break for no reason. One Check Engine problem to be fixed at 4 years. VW Wheel logo dealys FELL Off. Looks rediculous but to replace is $80 each! No decent cup holder for the driver. Console shows dirt and doesn't clean well.

WAY fun car to drive and it turns many heads. I opted for manual 5-speed transmission, and it performs very well. The only things I have not liked is (a) some peeling on the door handles & dealer didn't fix to my satisfaction; and (b) with a smaller wheel base, the car rides rough on bumpy roads -- but that's life in a smaller vehicle. You can park this puppy anywhere though, and you are guzzling precious fuel like those SUV owners! I love my Cabrio. It's been a great new car experience. Looking forward to spring so I can DROP THAT TOP! :)

My 2001 cabrio GLX is my first girly car, I have always had boy type cars, but I have always love the way the cabrio looked!! Now that I have had her for over 2 years, I love her even more. She is fun to drive, very reliable and everyone comments on her. My boyfreind also loves to drive her because even though she has a 4 cylinder, she has lots of giddy-up!! He is 6ft 5" and fits quite nicely in her. Thanks VW for making such a fun car to drive and yes I am a very satisfied DRIVER!!!

Good seats. Initial quality of VW is impressive but reliability has been disappointing. I recently sent VW a problem list 1)Engine revs high on start 2)Gas gauge only goes to 5/8 3) Door handle peels 4)Loud exhaust; 1 dlr suggested we replace all due to rust through 5) Window malfunctioned 6) Chk eng light comes on freq 7) Coolant light started to blink. Although just out of warranty (26K), VW fixed most except exhaust and handle. Other than reliability - fantastic car for the money.

My passenger side window keeps having issues, and the interior is falling apart (already had both interior door handles replaced) - always been a vw driver, only has 22,000 miles and it is back in the shop - with a 4 year lease what do I do except continue in this never ending love/hate relationship with this car.

Lots of leg room for 6'1" and 6'5" drivers. No room in back, though. Cup holders are awkward. Expensive to repair and scheduling service is a pain. Non VW stations can't service it because the malfunction codes are standardized (I believe there is a pending lawsuit about this.) Service Engine light goes on if you don't 'click' the gas cap. Get the manual shift if you want any power.

I cant decide if I love this car or hate it. Snow and tractor trailers are the enemy! Once the warranty expired, the problems started. MANY electrical problems and a coolant leak, so far. If Volkswagens are so reliable, why is the warranty so short? The back seat is roomy, but the front isnt. Try starting it without the wipers coming on! The interior panel material wear too quickly (door handles). With a 2.slOw, it barely gets out of its own way. Not the car to not someone off in! FAR too much wind noise on the highway. Easy parking and very easy to "transform". With the top down, it looks like an Easter basket!

I really do love this car. I can't help but smile when the top is down! I call it my putt-putt car because this is the kind of car you just want to cruise around in.

A few annoying things

This is a great car, with a few caveats: The steering wheel does not telescope, which is terrible if you're tall (which I am). The seat goes back so far I can't touch the pedals, but the steering wheel can't compensate, so it's useless. (Incidentally, it says in the manual that the steering wheel telescopes, but it does not.) Also, the front cupholders are useless. NOTHING fits in them except for a can of soda. Otherwise, it's a great car, but I'm trading mine in soon. I can't get comfortable in it.

I used to own a 12 year old VW convertible. I loved that car so much that I bought a new one. It is fun to drive with the top down. Love it. Love it. Love it.

After evaluating several convertibles, we chose the VW Cabrio because of its standard safety features (ABS, Front/Side Airbags, Roll Bar, & Seatbelt pretensioners) and real rear seat. The 2 year free maintenance in the 2001 model has been a plus - warranty repairs (replacement of a window seal, peeling door handle, and dash button) have all been easily covered. Ever passenger loves the dash at night, and the quality of the car is apparent every time you drive. On a sunny day with the top down it is a real antidepressant!

A lot of fun to drive

This is my second convertible and I am pleased with my purchase on the 2001 GL model. I totally recommend this vehicle.
