Almost to 150,000 miles in 15 years. Best car I've ever owned. No bells or whistles, thus no expensive repairs. Cargo space is amazing. Have transported goats, chickens, and dogs with back seats removed. Have even slept in car during storm when camping. Car flies effortlessly up mountain roads, with full load. Overdrive feature provides just enough kick for steep climbs. This minivan has seen the western half of the US, and has always been reliable. The only major problem we've had is with the anti-lock braking system, which has been the only expensive repair (>$1K). Change the oil every 3,000-5,000 miles and the car is happy.

I bought this van used, it was mashed, someone backed over the front of it with a truck and crushed the front end, which i ended up having to replace with junk yard parts.. The van had 37K miles on it when i purchased it and i only paid 4k for it with a clean title. I ended up spending a little less than 2k in parts and put it back together. It never had a single dealership take care of it, which i look for in used toyota's, because the dealerships are terrible when it comes to repairs, i have never seen a single toyota dealership actually fix an issue. Once back together the van was painted with a rattle can one color, the paint was never it's high point, but it was a low mile van, got decent MPG at 20 average, and had enough space to fit people, and stuff in it to move around. It had a great quality feeling interior, something the new ones still don't have. It didn't have the power doors, which is better since they never broke, and everything always worked. I recently sold the van with 397K miles on it.. It suffered from rust in the front rack, and it needed to be replaced, and some welding done, i purchased a used rack and it went with the van, i would have fixed it myself but, at this point in mileage i couldn't justify the work time to fix the issue. But, it ran/runs great, the next owner bought it for 2k and will replace the rack in it.. Never dropped a drip of oil, never burned anything, and if not for the rack i would have made a coast to coast trip with it tomorrow, without any concern it would have broken down. Unfortunately though, toyota's new cars lack the same solid feel, and quality.. so the day's of me driving a newer toyota are over.. Oh well it was nice while it lasted..

Best Car ever!

Original Owners of this 2001 Toyota sienna got it way back in 2001 and just keeps on chugging along. Only one big big project was done on it and that was transmission replacement because the fluid was getting burnt. 99,741 I'm expecting to see 100,000 miles within the next 2 weeks!`

Drove it to 240,000 miles with no problems. Great quality reliable ride. But about as boring as can be and had a smaller interior then most other mini vans. Overall positive thoughts about the 01 Sienna.

We had high expectations but found that the vehicle was plagued with expensive maintenance issues. We have spent nearly $10,000 on mechanical repairs and maintenance over 9 years. Mountain trips with kids and their gear too much for brakes, several complete rebuilds. We finally had brakes retro-fitted with racing discs and pads. We've replaced 3 alternators, two O2 sensors, 2 overdrive solenoids. Service support has been poor. We live in a large city, but parts are never on the shelf. Each time we have required a repair we have lost use of the car for 2 or more days. Over nine years, not with standing routine service, we have probably lost use of the car for 20 to 30 days.

I am amazed by the reviews on here, some honestly just make me laugh, I run full synthetic, and run 3k mile oil change runs, never had an issue with sludge. My interior takes a beating (not by kids, but snowboards, mountain bikes, and drunken friends) I have replaced the brakes twice in the front, the rears i believe are original, pads in NYC cost me 35 bucks a wheel to replace. rotors are 50 bucks each. The seats are super comfortable, and the ride is better then my friends 99 deville. The seats could be uncomfortable if you are huge, but then just pull the back seats out and roll yourself in.

Very Happy with my 2001 Sienna.

Bought new.Now have over 300k km and it just keeps going and going. Never had a major repair. Firm believer in preventative maintenance. Did all recommended maintenance exactly as prescribed in manual and have not had any problems. Lost rear wheel bearings at 260K km but fronts still in good condition. It has survived two teenage drivers and is a favorite for group road trips. Always had part of a sports team on-board going somewhere. Very comfortable to drive. I have since purchased 2 used 2001 corollas in 2004 and 2008 for my kids attending university and they just keep going and going. My non Toyota mechanic can't believe the condition of all 3 cars. 2001 was a very good year for Toyotas.

I have owned many cars in the past & not one has ever made me this happy as an owner. I am also an amateur mechanic. My story is classic, because I am a smart-a$$ & it was fun. Last summer I was driving behind a cherry red mustang with the top down. Sweet. Anyhow, the driver was kind of a jerk, ignoring the admirers on the sidewalk calling to him, "What year?" Fed up with this man's "Holier than Thou" attitude, I patted the side of my gray minivan, smiled wide & said, "2001! Ain't she a beuat? Awesome mileage & drives like a dream!" The side of the street guys were in stitches as I waved and pulled away slowly and proud. I LOVE THIS VAN! My next one will just be a newer version!

Had to Junk Our Sienna Due to Oil Sludge

Purchased a new 2001 Sienna XLE in 2000. 3 years later we had to replace the engine due to oil sludge. Toyota calls it "oil gel". Toyota fought us at first but then agreed to fix the car when we produced oil change receipts. 2 years after that the engine started leaking oil, and we had to replace all the oil seals. Again we had to fight Toyota for reimbursement. Also around this time we incurred over $1800 in costs to replace various fuel and exhaust sensors. And even after that, the check engine light kept coming on. Finally after another 2 years (we had the car 7 years and 80k miles at this point), and a major oil-related repair bill, the engine seized again from oil gel build-up. Avoid the Sienna. We junked the car after spending thousands on oil sludge related repairs and two engine seizures. A total nightmare.

Despite the glowing reviews, our 2001 Sienna XLE is one of the worst vehicles we have owned. Its build quality, interior and exterior, leaves much to be desired. The power doors have stopped working, the transmission is leaking, the front speakers went out, the radio head unit is failing, one of the visors is broken, and the fabric and interior overall are poor. I am so disappointed, and my wife hates this vehicle as she has lost confidence in it; we admit that our 2000 Dodge Caravan was a better vehicle, if you can believe that!

I have had a few expensive repairs beyond maintenance, maybe around $1500, but after 7 years and over 100,000 miles, to be expected. I love this van. Went from transporting youngsters and friends to loading in big Christmas trees, picking up loads of IKEA materials, loading screen doors, dry wall, moving kids to college and first apts., etc. Drives like a wonderful car. Very comfortable. Great stereo system. Good AC/defrost/heater, etc. If only it got a little better gas mileage. But it is a van, after all.

Decent, but disappointed

I bought this minivan in 2001. Our first choice was a Honda Odyssey, but in that year Hondas were so in demand we'd have to order one and wait. The Toyota Sienna has been a decent alternative. We have traveled across the country with it and it has never broken down. It has issues, however. Among them are the engine light and low tire inflation light constantly going on and annoying little repairs (struts, CV joints, shocks, and assorted other annoyances) such that I generally have to sink $2000 every two years into the thing to keep it going. Most recent repair bill in April '08 was just under $2000. Brakes seem to need to be replaced often.

Bought one new in 2000. Currently at 210,000 KM (130,000 miles) Have replaced brake pads once at 120,000 km. Other than that only regular maintenance. Driver side power window motor sounds like a bearing is worn. Kids are older, probably will sell it and get a smaller more fuel efficient vehicle. Paid 29,000 CAD in 2000, can sell easily now for about 8,000. No complaints here, obviously.

We bought our '01 Sienna new in June of '02. No problems with it at all. I tested several other minivans and was astonished at the power of the 3.0L V6 in this car and that's the principal reason I bought it. It also impressed as being quiet, comfortable and solid. After 62K miles, it's just as quiet as the day we bought it. We've gotten 26mpg on many long trips, which seems good for a van. Excellent features and sound system. The driver's side electric mirror has become a little balky and the power door needs a minor adjustment. NO other problems. Our experience with this has led us to buy two more Toyotas since, which are also great cars.

It has lived up to all expectations in terms of comfort, performance and reliability. We are on the highways a lot here - no complaints about acceleration. Excellent turning radius. After five years, still like the way it looks, inside and out.

Didn't intend to spend that much when we bought it 5 years ago but it's been worth it. This is my 7th Toyota and it has been just as reliable as all the others. And when I say reliable I don't mean how some people mean it. It now has over 64500 miles and I just changed the brakes, tires at 40000, and air filters every 30000, nothing else on it has ever been replaced. The only thing the 2 dodge grand caravans I've had over this vehicle is interior volume.

Good choice.

Never thought I would be writing accolades for a minivan, but here I am, doing just that. Absolutely the best family vehicle you could own for a family of four or more. Very peppy engine, handling is great, mileage is pretty good and the best thing is you can put everything plus the kitchen sink in this vehicle on trips to grandma's. We bought a small tv for the kids to use during trips, no fancy drop down dvd, and it works great with their earphones, for $200 or so.

I love this car. Mileage is about 27 miles /gal. highway. The ride is great and I love the spaciousness. I can drive long distances without tiring. The only things that I would change are some of the things that Toyota has done with the new ones - 2nd seat side windows should move, back seats should drop into the floor. I do wish that they would have put an outdoor thermometer on it.

Electrical system is a problem: passenger side window does not work. Started happening during warranty period, however, dealer, could not find problem existed. Now no longer works. Computer: Problem lights keeping coming on: low air for tire, engine problem, etc. We have had them checked at the dealer and they just reset for a cost. Also, Bayridge Toyota of Brooklyn NY stated that the engine problem was from over filling the gas tank and a repair of $800. Body: This car dents very easily.

Outstanding vehicle. In the market for a new one and not happy with the expensive option packages for '05. Spent all day yesterday test driving all the competition- conclusion: yes some are much cheaper but theres no comparison in looks, comfort, drive to the toyota. Back to the toyota dealership we went and made a deal. I'm getting another toyota sienna.

Decent space for family of 6. Nice interior, comfortable seats. Exc sound sys (prem.). So-so heat in MN winter. Good AC. Gets 26 mpg carrying a full load on hwy. The only problem is that the driver's mirror has become balky. NO other problems. Best reliability of anything we've owned. Nothing rattles or squeaks. I bought it primarily for the power. I was stunned at how quick the Sienna moved when I test drove it. More understeer than I like but that's FWD for you, replacement tires helped a lot. I'm buying more Toyotas!

The Sienna has been a dependable and great family vehicle. Only problem I have had continuously is with the brake system. It seems either the front or rear brakes are CONSTANTLY squealing and I need to have them adjusted almost immediately after JUST having them adjusted. It is very frustrating. And the only response I get from Toyota is that "yes" this is a common complaint with the Sienna and then a description of how the brakes are made and why this keeps happening. Not happy about this at all. But, overall, has been a good purchase and we think it is a good value. Would like to have a bit more storage, but see Toyota now has it with the 2004/2005 models. Good job!

Bought the van in '02 to replace a 91 Pathfinder. Has proven to be very comfortable on long trips with to small kids. Gas mileage is what you would expect for a 6 cyl. Have kept it serviced every 5000 miles at the dealer. Had initial problem with the power sliding doors not working. Right at 36000 and the rear seat will not pull out. Only taken it out 3-4 times. Dealership had to order part. Also, the passenger power window doesn't go down all the time. Overall, wished I could have afforded the Odessey, but this has been ok. Wife likes it for taking the kids around town. Don't get the optional center console; waste of space and no space.

Have had several minor problems, but nothing major. On hot summer days, the door locks stick, and you can't enter or exit through that door. Locks were replaced by dealer twice in 2002. Also had problems with seat belt jamming in retraction mechanism. I have heard about the engine sludge problem, so we have changed the oil on time every time without fail. Haven't had any problems with the engine yet (so far, so good). Overall, it has been an excellent vehicle. The ride is extremely comfortable, and there is enough room to be comfortable, even loaded with bags on vacation (although there are only 4 of us). Might be too small for a family of 5 or 6.

Our Sienna also developed 'engine oil gel'. Guess that's PC for Sludge. We call it the sludgemobile too. Dealer just rebuilt the engine < 28k miles. Didn't fight either. We have 2 friends that have had rebuilds too. One got back 4000$ on repairs. The brakes squeal, the AC broke < 12 miles, O2 sensor broke, seat back fell off, visor broke (used about 5 times).

The syling and engine performance has been good. However, I have had this van at the dealership 12 times for alignment and tire problems (The first trip was immediatly after purchase when the fvehicle was new - about 200 miles). I have never had similar issues with other vehicles, so I am convinced that the alignment and tire probles relate to a design issue with this van. I like the JBL system and captian chairs. The controls are easy to use.

My Sienna developed engine sludge at 80,000 miles and is now at the dealer getting repaired. Unfortunately, they aren't replacing the engine so who knows how soon the problem may return. Along with the squealing brakes when you come to a stop, now I have smoke bellowing from my exhaust when I start the engine cold. I'm very disappointed with the way Toyota has handled this - first misdiagnosing the problem then trying to blame me. Fortunately I have my receipts showing changes every 4500-5500 miles so they couldn't get away with that on me. But it didn't stop them from trying. It is enough to make me take my business to Honda or Nissan.

The rear brakes squeal so bad that the van announces its arrival each time you stop. Toyota has no fix. They've replaced the drums, pad and brake cylinders to no avail. The recessed windshield causes the wiper on the drivers side to compact snow and sleet on the the windshield up against the windshield frame instead of removing it. There is a small 17" wiper on the passenger side that wraps around the corner of the windshield is so small that it will not flatten out in the cold weather leaving the passenger side uncleaned and a blocked view. The seats are overly firm even for leather. Access to the third seat is difficult.

Thank God it's on a lease!

Have nothing but brake problems. Rear brakes hum when stopping - told this was "normal noise" for a Sienna. Very irritating. Had rotors sanded down after only 15,000 miles. 1 week later had metal crunching sound when stopping. Was told "nothing looks wrong". Was also told by dealer not to come back with rear brake noise that there's nothing they can do. Drivers side slider door rattles. Rattle in rear seats about drives me nuts Yes, it's been in to be fixed under warranty. Still rattles. Was planning to buy it at end of lease. I'm just glad i'm not stuck with it and can turn it in and be finished with this lemon when the lease is up.

This was my third Toyota and will be my last. I have had so many problems with the van that I can't imagine any other Sienna's being any better. It is to the point that I have to take it in every two weeks because the engine light comes on. When I first bought it I noticed that it was very noisy to drive. Then all of the problems started. The tire pressure light continues to come on, the sliding doors continue to get stuck open, and now the engine light comes on very often.

I bought this Toyota based on my ownership of a Camery prior(which was wonderful) and my awful experience with a Dodge Town and County Van. Overall I am pretty pleased with it, but currenly it is in the Toyota Service getting the engine rebuilt. There is only 44,000 miles and we did oil changes as they suggested. However, the entire engine has to be cleaned and rebuilt. According to a posted statement at Jiffy Lube, Toyota is having a problem with their V6 engines. Just in case you wondered, YES they are fixing under warranty, but I was told this we would a one time fix, we will see about that. Anyway, even good car makers can have major problems.

When I purchased this vehicle I had high expectations. Being rated number two and Toyota suposed to be the best screwed together car. Sorry to say the van has had lots of little problems. Doors that won't open. Removable seats that do not latch in securly. Poor paint quality. Lots of plastic pieces falling off or coming loose. High amount of maintenance required like tire rotation every 6000 miles. Plus service managers that treat you poorly. Took me 6 weeks to get a simple part.

Being hard to please, I find this vehicle worth owning. It is our first van and I'm glad we have it. We have two children and an 80lb dog that fit just perfectly. If my family were larger, I'd probably go with something larger. I'm still trying to figure out why people don't like the look of this vehicle.

Needed a vehicle that could carry multiple passengers plus camping gear and 2 large dogs. Our Sienna has been extremely reliable. We just carried 3 mountain bikes strapped down to the roof rack and brought along our two 80+ lb dogs and 3 kids plus all our camping gear. The van is a great long distance cruiser. The van scored better in safety than almost all other vans. No road noise.

The front passenger seat is very uncomfortable for someone with short legs. My wife is actually in pain if she sits there for only 45 min. to an hour. We've tried extra padding, putting things under her feet, etc. If the height of the seat, the tilt of the seat (front of seat tilted down slightly) it sure would be nice. The driver's seat is pretty good for her but that would be better if the tilt of the seat could be changed. 'd even appreciate that just to help change the position at times.

Love the mini van -- can not go wrong. May not have the excitment of others but so what. I want a family car that is reliable, safe to drive and is decent in every other area. I know the design of the Toyota is a little dated and it can not fit a 4x8 wood sheet in the back, but when was the last time you needed to haul whole plywood sheets around. It has plenty of use for 99% of the time. We tested the Chryler and it had a plusher ride but came up way short in many other area.

I bought this van after selling (in frustration) a fully loaded Pontiac Montana. After years of break-downs and failures of almost every major component, except the engine, I decided to go with proven quality. Simply said, I should have done this from day one.

One little thing I cannot stand is there is no driver control for interior lighting. There should be a way for the driver to control the lights from the cockpit. My kids love to press buttons and I usually dont find out they have turned on the interior lights in the back until we are all strapped in. You have to enter the cabin to turn off the back lights.

it has plenty of power and handles well. it drives very well during high wind situations, you don't feel like you are going to get blown off the road. the interior is wearing very well against our children. there are no interior rattles.
