Great Toyota Reliability. Have owned for 12 years with no major mechanical problems. It has been the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned. At 203k miles now and think I should hit 300k. No rust on the body in a bad NorthEast climate. Not the most exciting vehicle to drive, but it is very economical with a solid 4WD system. You really can't beat Ravs for their overall value.

Full-time 4x4 gives you traction all the time and you get a combined mpg of 25, that is amazing. I actually am a car moder (that means I modify my cars so they aren't stock). I suggest that if you want to change anything about this car it would be; get Yokohama AT/S tires for the best all around traction no matter the surface and the tires will last you forever, get performance intakes and filters to help with higher rpm performance. Those are very basic, if you are looking for anything better I suggest you go to RAV4world.

Great.. until 2/2010

I have to say- other than oil changes and tire rotations- the usual stuff; I have never had any major expenses (5 years- second owner). BUT In Feb 2010 I did have to spend 1700 on a new 'brain' and O2 sensor and battery. Now, it is in the shop again- sounding and feeling like a helicopter. So I have to give my old girl credit for 5 years (got her 2005) she has been an angel. Now she is being a bit greedy-but it is long over due. IF I have to buy a new car- I would get a RAV 4 again or maybe a highlander- little bit bigger and those are now HYBRID.

I had this car for almost two years and I loved it. I drove back and forth from school and back about two or three times a month. It is the best on the highway with gas, dependability, barely any noise, smooth driving and so many more things to love about this car. This car was very reliable and saved so much money on gas. I went to the mechanics only for oil changes and that is it. This car is by far the best car I will ever have. It is pretty cute as well. SADLY, I had to give it up because we got into an accident but besides that it was the love of my life. If you're looking for a safe, good on gas, and dependable car this is the one for you.

We bought our RAV4 used after a lease turnin @ 36K miles. We've put 46K on it so far. At first we drove it 100+ mi. a day commuting. Now we're both retired and it get's a lot less use, but it is 1 of the best cars we have ever owned in so many ways. On the road we get 30-31 mpg on reg. I've towed 1,500#s of stuff from norCal to Canada effortlessly. I've heard lately some owners have had auto. tranny disasters. We have seen nothing of that so far. I wonder if it's how others use their RAV4. We don't do much stop & go. Finally had to replace the front brake pads at 73.6K mi. I've owned Toyotas both new & used since `75 and have never regretted it. We hope to keep this car forever

We bought in Dec. 2000 brand new to replace Tercel. Love compactness with great interior room. Fun to drive fits anywhere. Bulletproof reliability. Wife never wants to sell. Replaced timing chain at 60K and had O2 sensor done at 62K. I really wonder if dealership is the best place for repairs, very expensive. Live in New England and put on Bridgestone Blizzaks in Nov. runs thru foot of snow like AWD. Excellent value.

Been a great car, plenty of storage and seating. Easy to drive, and other than Headlight Bulbs, virtually trouble free at 97,000 miles! Gas mileage could be better, but I am not complaining at about 25 mpg overall. Some rattles but not bad, usually able to find and fix-usually a loose screw on interior plastic. Would sure like to know why we seem to go thru 2 sets of Headlight bulbs a year! Started slowly but seem to burn out one side or the other about every 6 to 8 months! Dealer and electrical shop say everything tests fine?

I just bought this car with 125,000 miles on it. I know, by reputation, that this is pretty much just broken in for a Toyota. The car handles beautifully. I have been using it for business, and I have no complaints. I have always wanted one, and now, I FINALLY HAVE IT!! Peppy, and FUN to drive! I'll drive it until the wheels fall off, which I am sure will be a long, long time!

Bought my RAV4L in Nov 2000. She has over 110,000 miles now and still going strong. I have only done regular maintenance. The only thing that has failed is the passenger power lock is not working (which could be related to the add-on car starter/door opener package I had put on). Called today to see about a "timing belt" change (since I've never done that and everyone said I should) -- only to find out that once again, Toyota has outdone themselves and the timing CHAIN never needs replacing. So she's getting a tuneup next week. I've had her detailed 2 times and both times she looks like a brand new car afterward. I hope to see 300,000 miles on this one! Gas mileage: 27 / 29.

It was good overall. I kept up with all regular scheduled maintenance. First the Catalytic Converter went out at approximately 74,000 miles. Of course, the brakes had to be replaced more than other cars, and now at 92,000 miles I had to replace the transmission solenoid for $1,600. Next, might be the transmission, for $3,000 dollars more. Had both of them gone out it would have been a downpayment on a new car. So, that's all I have to say.

Still Crazy (about it) after 6 yrs.

Totally dependable, solid and always fun and economical to drive. 4-cyl. w/5-speed manual likes to rev high and zoom along. Zippier than you'd imagine, very stable manuvering and braking. I get an average of 27 mpg combined and up to 31 mpg on a long, slow trip. Original Toyo tires were unspectacular but a set of Michelins made a real improvement especially in the wet. The quartet of engine sensors were a bit troublesome, three already replaced before 70k miles. Now at 100k miles it still feels solid and fun to drive. I plan on keeping this one for the duration and I feel pretty optimistic about a good, long life for this one. I would buy another in a heartbeat.

I have driven this car 130,000 miles in 3 yrs, had 51k when I bought it. I do on site computer service work for major computer service company. This car has never failed me, not even once! The only thing Ive had to do is oil, plugs, brakes, tires. Catalytic converter failed at 78k was covered by warranty, O2 sensors went out at 120k, those are the only mechanical issues Ive had. I've beat this car to death and keeps going, it's been across a few creeks, miles and miles of muddy dirt roads, up and down mountains, through hail, wind sheers, you name it this car can handle it ! I'm sold on Toyota for life!

We've had our car since July 2001. Aside from the lousy gas mileage around the city 17 and 20-21 hwy, it's been a really fun ride. The AWD grips really well and give the car a nice ride. The acceleration is a bit sluggish at times, but it has a really nice ride once it's going. The rotors are cheap, constantly need shaving, so they'll be replaced. I had the infamous 420 & 440 (O2 codes), so I'm hoping that the reprogramming doesn't kill off my O2 sensors and catalytic converter.

I have the AWD L edition. I've had this car for 5 yrs already and have 52k mi. It's a nimble car, pretty good ride and pretty good looking. The only problems I find are the low 17 mpg avg in NYC, very noisy in fast traffic and the brakes. It has very good handling. Worked great in the snow, but then again we rarely get snow here. We've been using Amsoil synthetic in the engine and the gears. Overall it's a great car to have w/ the main exception of the poor mileage. I've already had the 02 check engine light and the charcoal canister engine light too. For now, I had the comp upgrade, still waiting on my 02/cata conver disaster known for 01's.

I recently purchased this vehicle with 67K miles on it. I love it. First, for a tall wagon it gets great mileage (I see 24 in reality, mostly city driving). It has cargo room enough to haul most practical loads. It is also very quick considering its a 4 cylinder suv. Brakes, steering, suspension all very responsive. Not great for stop and go traffic because it makes almost no power below 2500 rpm. Took me a while to not spin the tires on startup. Very practical vehicle with few compromises. The perfect cargo loading height means no rear bumper though.

Bought used with 19,000 miles, in top condition. Paid about $500 over average market but was great buy. Only repair (covered by warranty) in 3 years was to reset computer immediately after purchase due to no acceleration from stop. Drove 6,000 miles on summer vacation in '05, performed perfectly with average 29 mpg thru rocky mountains, pacific NW and level terrain, no overheating. Holds 75 mph easily on hwy, uses reg. fuel, holds 4 adults long distance in reasonable comfort, 3 adults in great comfort. Easy on tires, great stability, seats removable with no trouble. Only complaint is halogen headlights are too bright and unadjustable. Will still be a great car at 200,000 miles.

The Rav4 is a comfortable little SUV. It is not the most powerfull, but it gets great MPG (When driven nicely). Seats are nice and supportive, and the silver/metal looking plastic looks upscale, even if your not sure what it exacly is. The AWD is nice and is needed in the rockies.

This SUV has class and quality I've never experienced. The four years plus of owning this vehicle, the only issue I've ever had with it is taking it in for its required maintenance. I don't think I can ever get a better quality and more affortable vehicle unless it's a Toyota. The only reason I am departing from it is that I need more room due to medical issues, which leads me to the new 2006 that has more room. I haven't checked it out yet but if the driver seat gives me more room, then Toyota has won me over again. I will never purchase another motor vehicle outside of Toyota. I hate having to give my SUV up, but I feel like I am getting a big promotion to what Toyota has to offer me next.

I've had my Rav 4 for almost 5 years. I'm about to go over the 100K mile mark and it's been doing great. The only downside is that the 2001 model has something wrong with the Oxygen sensor software. I had it fail on me around 65K miles and again at about 82K. It was covered under warranty both times and is around an $80 fix for the next time it comes down the line. Not really a big problem, but it makes the check engine light go off.

We bought our silver, 5-speed, L series beauty-of-a-car on Mother's Day of this year. So far we ABSOLUTLY love it! We got it with 70,311 miles and it drives like brand new! and it has 73,423 miles (as of 7/20/05) now. We haven't actually tried the AWD the way it was built yet, but some friends of ours that have one says that "it drives as if there weren't any snow" do I'm anxious to try it out! I've notice a hair-line crack where the plastic aluminum on the driver's door handle is. The sound is --okay. Over all I'd give the car... well let's just say that I'm gonna be buying another one someday! :) It's a BIG step up from 2000's model, it looks sexy!

This is a car/SUV that seems to do exactly what's intended for it. Design in and out are very sporty. I have the leather/sunroof package so it is essentially loaded with options. One option I did not get (and wouldn't) is AWD. There is simply not enough power from the engine to support the extra weight this option adds, and let's be realistic: how often is one really going to NEED AWD? I live in the Seattle area and travel to the mountains quite a bit - ground clearance is high enough to navigate pothole ridden forest service roads, and being from the midwest, I can manage driving in the snow without AWD. Gas milage for an SUV is pretty good as well - 22mpg city, and 30mpg highway.

This has been just a great little car - I still have fun driving it. Even on trips it has provided plenty of comfort, partly because there is so much leg and head room. I can't complain that it lacks power; what would one expect from a 4-cylinder SUV? Snow and up-hill driveway is an issue where we live, and with studded snow tires, this is a little army tank!

What a fun car to drive! I have always been a fan of the manual transmission, ever since learning to drive on the Rambler with 3 on the "tree". Guess manuals are a dying breed. I was so lucky to get the 5speed in the gold color I wanted. Yes, I have the dash rattle, but it is very infrequent. Besides I always have the radio on so it's not really a problem.

I've had many vehicles since I started driving in 1966 and the Rav4 has to rank in the top 5 of all of them. That's pretty good because all the rest of them were cars, no trucks or SUVs. I've taken it on several trips over 500 miles and it's as comfortable as my Acura 3.2TL S Type. The combination of ride and handling is unbelieveable for an SUV and with the 5 speed manual it has plenty of acceleration. Most people can't believe how much room there is in the back especially when the rear seats are removed. I'm surprised that Toyota doesn't advertise this vehicle more for as good as it is.

I have put many miles on the car, and some rugged off roading (quite a bit) I've never been stranded on the side of the road. Horsepower is lacking but the rewards are seen at the gas pump. The five speed manual gear box helps over come the power issue. At 255,000km. I am Getting the best fuel milage yet!! Lets hope for a hybrid! The limited slip differential is a little "week" but as long as the car is still moving it will pull though almost anything.

If you want a speed/handling, car-based SUV with very good fuel-economy and the very best driver's seat-comfort/support, the newer-model-year RAV4 is far ahead of the rest of 'em. Toyota has a penchant for the best and the brightest cars/SUVs and trucks. This one again makes its nearest competitors, Ford's Escape/Mazda's Tribute into also-rans.

I traded my 2000 Honda Civic in on this one in Dec of 2000 for the new rav4. I was highly impressed before I even bought it, especially with the way cool interior design. Afte buying, this car has blown me away with its reliability: I currently have 107,000 miles over 3 yrs, kept up with oil and maintenance, and the only problem I have had is replacing the brake pads twice total. Nothing else has gone wrong, and it has been unthinkably dependable. When you take out the back 2 seats, you've got more storage room than a Land Cruiser. Outstanding overall

Great Look, Fun to Drive

The RAV 4 is a really great car. While the road noise is a bit louder than it should be, everything else about the car makes it worth the purchase. It is very dependable, easy to control and fun to drive. Everywhere I go, people are commenting on what a sharp looking car it is. I bought this for my daughter, but would definitely purchase one for myself if I was looking for a SUV.

The mext-gen Toyota Rav4 follows suit with the mini-SUV craze. It does it's job, and does it well. It looks GREAT inside and out, with traditional Toyota reliability and build quality. The 2.0L I4 is pretty peppy, abeit it has to rev like mad to produce torque when climbing up hills and hard driving. It wasn't meant to race, so that really shouldn't matter. As long as you don't lead-foot it 24/7, it's quick to get up and go. With the L package, the car really shines.Gas milage is OK for a car of this size, but it's all in how you drive it. Usually gets around 22-24 MPG.

I love the way it looks outside...

I own two RAV4s and I have yet to have any problems with them. The "L" series is very fun to drive and it's handling is pretty good for a 4 cylinder. I have yet to get trapped in the 2+ feet of snow in the winter time. All the interior features are very easy to operate and are all in hands reach. This SUV gets two thimbs up!!

I love my Rav!!!!

I traded in a 2001 Dodge Ram Ext. Cab Half-ton for my Rav4. I wanted an automobile that was different, fun, and econioical! I hit the jackpot with my Rav4. I average 30 miles to the gallon. I save over $100 per month in gas, from what I was paying with my Dodge. The Rav4 fits my family of four very comfortable, and the cargo space is very well designed. It is so much fun to drive!

i have always liked the style of the rav 4. even more so when the 2001's came out. i too agree that they need a little more power and a little less outside noise inside. the only problem i have had was kind of unusual in so far as my headlights would go out for no apparent reason and then come back on. they fixed a switch the first time but it continued to happen and they never could find out why or duplicate the incident. eventually it stopped totally for whatever reason and has not happened since. explanation???? beats me!! overall i like my rav and to me you can't beat the exterior styling, very sporty.

I love this car, already put 45000 miles and runs excellent, feels very firm.No problems at all, i previously owned a ml320 mercedez 2000 and is nothing better than my toyota,I have a friend who owns a 1998 rav4 with 256000 miles and he is very very happy an ready to put more miles. Not bad for a 4 cylinders car don't you think?

We have 2 RAV 4's, a 1999 and a 2001. We enjoy both but the 2001 was significantly improved over the 99. The new body style was our favorite change.

I love this car. Truck. Cluck. It is a touch underpowered at 4 cylinders, but that would have been my choice anyway. Toyota should really offer a six. This is my first experience with AWD. I won't go back. It handles the snow here in the Northeast very well. I still, two years later, think this is a snazzy looking car. If you are on the fence, you won't do better than this one.

I have had this vehicle for two years, It's been in the shop on average every two to three months. They have looked at the brake system four times and replaced the back brake drum once. It still has problems. The interior rattles. It's been in the shop several times to fix those. In May of 02' the cadillic converter went out. Toyota had it for over a month (Could not get parts). This is my first Toyota and most-likely my last. These are the types of problems I would expect on a 5 year old American made car not Toyota!!!

I went to purchase a Honda, Accord...but the new RAV4 body style caugth my attention. This may be my first Toyota....but we have had Fun together......what a great ride'n auto. Just enough room for me and my bike...a few friends...love the road trips...May I point out the great gas milage! After several Honda, Accords all with 150,000 or 300,000 this is a JOY, hope to get the same for the Toyota!

This is a great car, plain and simple. It's not really an SUV, having been built on a Camry- not a truck chassis. The center of gravity is low, the car is wider and shorter than a sedan, it's a cinch to park, has a great turning radius and, best of all, handles more like a sports car than a Jeep. It's a bit under-powered and gets minimally acceptable fuel mileage, but we live with it. A great vehicle all around, especially with the rear seats removed to yield a cavernous cargo area.

We love it review

The RAV4 is the first and best in its class. Others are overly large (Who needs a V6 in an SUV this small? If I need a V6, I'll probably want a bigger SUV) or too trucklike and rough around the edges (Blazer Sport, Sportage, Grand Vitara, Tracker, Rodeo Sport, Liberty, Wrangler). The overly- glorified CR-V can be best described as either a very short Volvo or a boxy minivan. The Element? What were they thinking???

My Rav4 rattled at the bottom of the windshield and the breaks started to squeak before I traded it. I repeatedly tried to have the rattle fixed but it always returned. If you want a quiet car, get something else that is what I did. The Rav4 is easy to park and drive on flat roads, but struggles to make it uphill.

Is RAV4 really made by Toyota?

Rattle, Squeak, Rattle, Creak... That pretty much sums up my experience with my RAV4...not to mention the "Check Engine Light" syndrome... I have only owned Hondas and this was my first Toyota...and I have to admit, this is the worst car I have ever owned. Don't buy this car.

Bought this car loaded in August of 2001 for $24,000, currently have 13,000 miles. Have had it in the shop three times. Rear brakes replaced twice, fuel gauge and sending unit replaced. Now have brake problem in front and have problems with the CD player going into error mode. I am not happy with this car at all. Car is now starting to develop rattles. Poor power, fair gas mileage and a bit noisy. I've owned Toyota's, Honda's and Mazada's, this car is the worst by far.

Overall a good "cute SUV". Haven't had any problems with it. Only getting 20mpg. Kind of weak accelerating, but it's not supposed to be a sports car. The rear seats remove easily for hauling medium size stuff (bikes, etc.). Body design is a major improvement over previous models.

I purchased this car in August 2001. It has been in the shop 5 times for repairs. This is not quite what I have been accostomed to in new car purchases. Toyota needs to take a good look at the design of this auto. Fun to drive but certainly not worth the aggravation of scheduling recurring problems.

I've had my Rav for a little over a year. While it's very easy to drive, it lacks power and handling. It's size is adequate, and it's easy to park in smaller spaces thanks to the short front end. I'm not too crazy about the exterior design. While it's an improvement over the original body style, it's a little too "cutesie" for me. It's almost like a station wagon on steroids. Anyway, overall, it's roomy enough to be comfortable on long trips, and for the price, it's a dependable little car.

Sadly disappointed in reliability department. Have had the brakes replaced numerous times and had to have to computer replaced at 10,000miles and reflashed again at 22,000 miles. Poor customer sat from toyota. I previously owned a 98 Camery and to date was the best vehicle that I owned. Sorry Toyota but after the service I received and the numerous problems with this vehicle I will GLADLY take my business elsewhere.

Great car to buzz around the city in. It's height gives you an advantage compared to a sedan, and the turning radius combined with a compact body makes tough parking a breeze. The AWD has a great impact on winter roads and you feel very safe/grounded.

I've had the vehicle for less than a year and I've had the brakes replaced (this was one of their technical service bullitens--a recall they didn't want me to know about until after the brakes failed and left me smashed at the bottom of a cliff somewhere), new pads put on, the stereo has had to be replaced--all this on top of it's horribly slow pick up (transmission won't shift until it warms up), and other odd noises that make me question the reliability almost daily! I've had enough--I'm trading in this piece of @#!* for a Hyundai! Toyota really blew it for me--I'm telling everyone I know and I'll probably never buy one again!!
