Bought this 2001 with 98,000 miles in January, 2009. Was a very clean, one-owner car. As of Aug 2016 we now have 230,000 miles on it, some rust showing, but it may give us another year. Only repair besides expected maintenance was the rack-and-pinion went out; replaced with inexpensive used part. This car has been reliable, very good on gas (usually 35-40 mpg; winter that dips), and easy to park in our small parking pad. Oh, both front springs have broken, but since it still steers and brakes and corners fine, I've not fixed them. It clunks on bumps, but tire wear remains normal. FYI, though, these 1.8L motors do begin to consume oil once miles add up. Oil return ports begin to sludge and restrict, causing blowby. I've just kept a close eye on oil levels and add as needed. I used Amsoil for a long time, but now use inexpensive conventional, and synthetic in MN winter.

I live in NYC, and find this vehicle to be the ideal city car. The combination of excellent reliability, compact-size and great maneuverability make this car a winner. Between the horrible pothole ridden roads, stop and go traffic, excessive idling, and near-constant sudden breaking and my aggressive driving -- this car takes a beating, However, in spite of the abuse, my Corolla starts up every time - and continues to run stronger than ever. I currently have 140k on the car, and even with the abuse it takes from city driving fully expect it to last another 100k. I average about 6k miles driver a year, so I anticipate driving this car for the next 10+ years.

Great Reliable Car!

We bought this car new in May 2001, we now have 135K miles on it and still love it! The only issues we have had to deal with was replacing the clutch at 95K (driver fault) and simple maintenance. The front brake pads lasted until 120K (I check them regularly). I still average about 31mpg when its all city driving and 36 when I commute on the highway. We could afford a new car, but I will drive this one until it's last mile, and would not hesitate to buy another. With that said it is not perfect and there are drawbacks like interior size, road noise, etc.. But I am a believer that those are little things while reliability and affordability are the things that are harder to come by. UPDATE 2/29/2016: Still love this car, but recently had some transmission issue (manual). Had to have it rebuilt and continue to have issue with a seal. Partly my fault because I neglected to change the trans fluid and maybe just a fluke. We are going to part ways with it because of my 500 mile/week commute otherwise I would keep it as my main driver.

I just recently purchased my '01 Corolla S automatic for way under blue book with 116K miles on it and couldn't be happier. The handling, turn radius and overall feel of the car is so much more luxurious than that of my 1986 Corolla that I traded in years ago with 281K miles on it. Weird thing though was as soon as I got into the vehicle, it felt like I was sitting back in my 1986 model. Toyota has pretty much kept all the dials and switches in the same place, except for the radio, so I didn't have to "learn" anything new. Love the sunroof, the engine is super quiet and even though the exterior is typical Toyota boring, the interior is very nice. I'm happy with it.

If it breaks down i will go buy the SAME CARE AGAIN SAME YR!

bought it from a used dealer, 137k in 2009. 4yrs later its at 230k. Good on gas, no break downs, just needs gas and oil change. Manage your fluids. Toronto (401 and VP) to niagra on probably 6-7 gas. Friends tell me its ugly, but i tell them there ugly!

I bought my 2001 Corolla used in 2003 with 40k miles. It now has 120k miles and is still my primary car. No engine problems that others have reported. My catalytic converter was replaced at 115k though. I've done by the book maintenance and have had no major problems. The only big repairs I've had were break issues that were my fault from overly aggressive city driving. I'm not sure about what others have said about burning oil...I haven't noticed it but I know little about cars. This car gets better gas mileage than the current Corolla models. I once drove from Pittsburgh to Indianapolis on one tank.

I purchased a used LE in 2001 with 17k miles. I now have 170k miles on the odometer. The cost of ownership for this vehicle has been good despite my car suffering from many of the woes documented by others. The major concern is the engine. Despite by the book maintenance my engine expired at 146k miles. Premature piston ring wear leads to piston slap and eventually a broken wrist pin. I also have the continuous CEL. A note to other owners, if your fuel economy deteriorates, change the mass air flow sensor. It is a cheap and easy fix. I also had the broken door handle and the sagging headliner. At the end of the day it is cheap tranportation.

We're scrapping the car today. It made it to 90k miles. It has the following problems: * The motor (1ZZFE) was built with a design flaw, but Toyota kept using it. Hundreds of people on the internet have reported the same thing. It burns oil until it hits a point where every 100 miles it burns 1 quart of oil. The engine went bad and needed a replacement starting at 50k miles * The catalytic converter is dead. * The rotors are bad and braking feels choppy. * The driver door handle simply broke off when I tried to open the door. * The clutch went bad at 50k miles. * Some smaller issues like a leak somewhere that mechanics couldn't find, causing repeated engine lights and EVAP codes.

Bought used, now has 240,000km. Still has the original brakes, not a spot of rust anywhere (Canadian car) and in the winter it gets cold started twice a day every day as this is a commuter car. Haven't had a single problem with it. A little underpowered but hey its an economy car. Fuel consumption is 6l/100km in the summer and about 8l/100km in the winter.

I bought brand new summer 2000 (as a starving college student). My converter died early and I had terrible gas mileage. My interior has just collapsed. I mean it's a cheap car, but really, Toyota can't make an interior headliner that looks nice for at least 5 years?

My fiance noticed the low engine light on the car last week and had me check it. The car had less than a quart left when I changed the oil. She drove for a week before telling me so that is around 200-300 miles. Toyota quality is amazing. I cannot believe that the engine did not blow up! The rest of the car is boring but I like the car now for its toughness!

bought my corolla used in 2011. It had only 42k because a grandma used to own it. The gas mileage was amazing, and the acceleration was alright. The brakes didn't react well and locked up easily. I crashed because the car was too light, causing it loose control on a small swerve at about 55 mph. It hit a wall and flipped upside down. Both airbags deployed and the seat belt held on to me well. I had only scratches from glass and minor back trauma. It saved my life but it may have caused the accident as well.

Bought it with 77k on it, and now have 153k. Had to replace the struts... like many 2001 owners I have had a check engine light on for 3 years now... nuts, it turned itself off for 90 days and came back on, and they figure its either sensors or the catalytic converter. It's a pretty good car, but the gas mileage went from good to horrible with age. It's okay overall. The dash lights are gone now.. they don't work, and the engine idles really hard ... I hope it keeps going and going.. I aim to get 220,000 miles on it so if it does that I will be thrilled

This is my second Corolla and it is a great every day vehicle. The only 2 times this car did not start was dead battery and when dealership overfilled it with oil. From handling and power point of view this car performs fairly well - it is easily controllable and very predictable. I found the car to be very comfortable for long rides as well, even at higher speeds the engine noise is manageable and the mileage is great.

I love my car but I am very disappointed with what is happening to my interior. I have already replaced my exterior around two of my windows. This is truly a problem with the manufacture I think. This is causing me money to fix and stress because of the way the car is looking. This is my second Toyota and I can not believe what is going on. When I went to the dealership where I purchased the car they did not show interest in fixing the car but for me to purchase. I am trying to find out if this is a recall.

I bought this car used with 30,00 miles on it and have had regular maintenance performed. Have have had a few major problems that were costly to repair. Common Toyota problem, per my body shop guy: the door handle mechanism broke requiring $800 repair. My body shop guy says he sees about 15 Toyotas a year that have this problem; from Corollas to Avalons and Toyota hasn't done any recall. My roof paint is chipping and is rusted, so poor paint quality because no accidents to account for this. I fear this repair. My gas mileage is only about 24 city, 32 highway. I've always owned Toyotas and have enjoyed them, and this is my only mediocre one, but makes me want to go Honda next time around.

The 2001 corolla is about as boring of a car as you can get. Too bad the 2002 made major improvements. I have had this car since it was bought brand new and still drives fine with some minor mechanical problems. The check engine light has been on many many times. I think the interior is OK quality and there are not any bells and whistles at all. Also, I noticed that not just my car, but many Corollas like mine are missing hubcaps or have aftermarket ones. That tells me the interior quality isn't great either. The fuel economy definitely does not reach 41mpg on the highway. Overall, it is just a mediocre car in my mind.

I haven't had this car very long yet but bought it because of it's reputation as a solid reliable car. And that's exactly what it is. I'm very very happy with it, just recently took it on a 11 hour drive, and it performed great. Has enough power to pass on the highway no prob...just drop it into 3rd and it's gone. I suggest the manual though, I don't think it would be so great in an automatic, but that's just me. The gas mileage is awesome! It's fun to drive for a 4 door economy car, and looks good too. The A/C works great, but really robs the engine of power. But yeah, great choice if you're looking for a reliable cheap to own car. Can't go wrong with a Toyota.

I was spending $320/mo. in gas at the time I purchased this vehicle, so there were two things I looked for in my vehicle: reliability and gas mileage. This is the premium package for both. I drive my car all the time and living 30 minutes from work I only spend about $100/mo. in gas now. I recently took a small road trip in 530 miles, I used 15 gallons of gas! So I averaged at 35 mpg! I could improve this number by getting a tune up, an oil change, and inflating my tires. I also used my air conditioner most of the way and drove at about 75 mpg. Not bad.

This car is a very reliable economy car. That being said, the 'economy' part should speak for itself in terms of interior room, comfort, etc. Short on inside space and features, but fairly easy to customize or add to. Small but fairly peppy 1.8L engine gets me an average of 34 mpg, and as high as 41. Excellent turning radius, and very good at maneuvering in heavy traffic, as well as very good field of view. Perfect for a small commuter car. Excellent for students, as it's fairly inexpensive to repair in most cases (for a foreign vehicle). Only complaint is that it has a problem with oil consumption.

Awesome car!

I bought my Corolla when it was at 12000 miles. It is at 82000 now. Just recently I had to replace a head gasket (and the interior door handle broke). While the head gasket was an expensive repair, its the first problem that I've had with the car. The steering has loosened over time, but not to the point of concern. The gas mileage is very good (although I don't seem to get as good of mileage as the LE is rated to have - 32 city, 39 highway).

Overall, the Toyota Corolla is the basic transportation. No cruise, no ABS, and bland, boring styling. It's not bad looking, but not nearly as nice as the Civic from the same year. Outside, the car is fairly boring. The headlights are a neat shape, but that's about all I can say about the interior. This car is absolutely boring in tan. Inside, it's still boring. Tan, tan tan. The seats are fairly comfy, no complaints there. Rear legroom is a joke. Trunk space is good, enough for a long trip. Overall the car has been very reliable, mass air flow sensor is the only major thing replaced. Other normal things like timing belt, etc.

I bought this car little less than two weeks ago with only 32k miles on it, I already put on 600 miles and I am enjoying it. It has a nice looking exterior, and a plain and somewhat cramped interior. The car absorbs bumps better than some midsized and large cars I have driven before! I love the acceleration in the city and suburbs, gets a little scary on the highway though when getting up to speed, even with flooring it. The car has a very solid feel to it, and handles well, even without ABS. However, I was surprised to see that I only get mileage figures similar to what was advertised when on the highway, otherwise nowhere near which is frustrating. Minus a couple cons, however, it's great.

I own a 2001 Toyota Corolla S model with 60,000 miles on it, and the car runs like brand new. The only alteration I did was put a cold air intake, and a universal Injen Muffler on it, and the car is faster than it appears. 25% more horse power, and even better on fuel economy. Not to say it was bad before, but I needed more power from the 135 that I had before. Overall quality and reliability is what I get from this car. You never have to worry about it breaking down on the side of the road. If you ever get this car new the only negative thing is that the manufactures tires are not very good, make sure you spend some good money on some good tires, and this car will make you very happy!

I won the regional H stock championship for 2005 in this car. not a great amount of power in the motor but it handles well. much more power than the 99 civic I traded for it. under normal use, these cars just dont break. I do have the 5 spd manual and normally get 37-42 mpg combined city/hwy. runs like a champ.

Its really a great car. Almost every review is a big success. I have immensely enjoyed my 'yota. It had 67,000 mi. when I purchased it. I road- tripped out to Oregon from Michigan in April 2006 (6,200 mi. round trip) and it was a dream. Nothing went wrong with the car, we had only to change the oil once, and thats it. It never overheated, and it took on the Rockies with valiant spirit. One thing that DID go wrong though, as strange as it may sound, was that the cd player and volume knob broke. But we discovered later that SOMEHOW the volume was now fully controllable through the dashlight knob, and the headlight stick would turn the sound off and on...?? Weird. This car is perfect for those who want a reliable & fun car while not paying a huge sticker price. Gets great gas mileage and never gives me with a headache. The engine may be a little weak, but what do you expect from that small a car. While you don't smoke other drivers on the strip, you will definelty burn them at the pumps.

I bought this car (LE) as a commuter car (my other is a 454 crew cab) and the gas savings alone is paying for itself. I commute 150 miles one way to work and this car has never let me down in the 2 years of operation. I plan to utilize it one more year and trade up to a '06 model. The VVT-i gives me back the power to fly over Pacheco Pass (CA) seamlessly. Everything is within reach and ergonomically correct. Since I seldom have passengers the back seat is premium extra storage for me. This is a very reliable car that does what its designed to do for pennies on the dollar.

I'm satisfied!

Have had my 2001 LE with 4-speed automatic almost 4 years and I can honestly say I'm 100% satisfied with the car - the mileage is very good, checked it today and I got 31.3 mpg on my last tank - car handles well and the engine is quiet - I did have to replace the blower motor at 22,000 miles but luckily it was still under warranty - if I had to to it over I'd get the same car only a different color - dark colors show everything -

It is the best car we have ever owned I also have a tacoma Truck which I love. We are a TOYOTA family! Will never buy any car other than Toyota.

I just bought my Corolla S this week and even my parents approve of it for reliability and dependability. It's so much better than my nightmare Mazda 626. It's fun to drive with the stick shift and handles curves like a dream! I also like the way it looks, the last owner took off the red S and the Toyota decal on the off the back (so it only has the Toyota symbol and says Corolla) and I think I'll keep it that way. The paint is chipping and scratching pretty easily though so I'm going to have to get the chips retouched and another layer of clear coat put on the whole thing.

I have purchased the "S" due to Toyota's outstanding reliability, and quality I have come to appreciate over the years. So far these two vehicles have been the best purchase's ever. After having an 00' Accord EX-V6 (too many transmission and engine problems) and a 02' Volvo S60(electrical). I'm happy and now a Toyota owner for life. Now looking to purchase an 05' XRS for me and an 05'Prius for my mom.

A nice car, nothing outstanding, but still a very worthy buy. As the reviewers mentioned, the Corolla is very reliable car - though I have only owned it for 3 years / 36,000 miles. The car does seem to be put together well; no loose parts or rattling. Some problems: back seat way too small (no leg room), the engine performance isn't great (particularly with the a/c on), and for some reason my car has always had a problem with shifting into reverse. That being said, overall, this is a good car.

Great car will last a long time!

My parents bought me a brand new Corolla a few years ago to get me to school and work. They said I could use it while I was in college, and after graduation I could either turn it back over to them or keep it and pay them back, but I can't imagine ever parting with my Corolla! The reliability of this car is outstanding for a young, single woman who doesn't know anything about cars. As long as you maintain it well, your Corolla will never let you down. I get well over 300 miles per tank, and I have never had it in the shop. I would definitely recommend a Corolla to anyone looking for a mid-sized commuter car that gets great gas mileage.

Considering she hit us really hard on the front side, and she had a SUV, I think the fact that we are not seriously injured shows how safe a car this is. I never had any problems with this car. Its very comfortable, fun car. I definatly recommend it! I just wish the new ones looked like this inside and I would get another one.

I now have driven this car for over 3 years, it has 57k miles and Ive only had to buy an airflow meter since my last review and I installed it myself to save money. The rest is usual upkeep, wheel alignment, air filter, fluid & oil changes, ect. No more hassles with repairs at dealerships for years now thankfully so the car has been problem free since its rough start. I have found that 93 octane gas eliminates the foul odor, the other octanes cause it to smell bad.

Wow, I was really surprised on the build quality and comfort, no rattles, excellent gas milage, and good power. Back seat is a little cramped, but if you want alot of space in the back seat by a Camry. This is my first Toyota, and certainly won't be my last. Great car for the money. We bought our car right after we got married in 2001. We have had no problems with it and find the car to be very economical. The Factory tires only lasted to 13000 miles, but I have heard that is the case with all factory tires. Recently inspected the brakes and the pads have 60% life after 45000 miles! (It is a stick) The car has enough pep and it is fun to drive beacuse it is a stick. The front seats were a little uncomfortable at first.

I was a little upset in the beginning, but love it now. It's a fun car to drive, and cute too. What really got me was the steering wheel, very sporty... Ha ha. This was my second Toyota. My first was a Tercel and lasted me twelve years. I've had this one for two months and I gave up and traded up to the 2003 model. The front was cramped and difficult to get into. I am only 5' 7 1/2" but I found that the seat would not go back far enough so that I could use the pedals without turning my feet in uncomfortable ways. In addition the suspension was very flimsy. It would bottom out on simple bumps. Otherwise it was a Toyota. It handled well and was well made.

I really like my 2001 Toyota Corolla S. I like it for it's great fuel economy and spunky little engine. The styling both inside and out can be a little more adventurous, but you don't become a best-seller on looks alone. THe quality is top notch and i haven't had any major problems with it at all (I am a heavy driver). Of course the interior is a little cramped, but it's a COMPACT people! The Corolla is the ultimate ride in it's class. It's 1.8L engine can get you where you need to be at a surprising rate. It may not a Corvette Z06, but it certainly is ready for ANY task you can give it. Bought this as my first car in January. It does a great job of getting me to an from work six days a week. I love the build quality and interior fit and finish. The engine is very rev happy and the three speed auto does just fine. Interior room is just fine for two average adults with the back seat used for storage. I don't mind the so-called "plain vanilla" of the 2001 Corolla, for the simple reason that cars with "personality" (i/e the 2001 Celica) are "very ugly" and "overpriced". The dealer (Toyota of Killeen) took forever and a day (Two months) to get me a new registartion sticker for this car, but that is not Toyota's fault.

It handles like a dream and gives a quiet ride - the gas mileage is great - I usually get 30 mpg in the city and 39 on the highway - no rattles, squeaks and NO RECALLS! I almost bought a Civic and I am so glad I got the Corolla instead - it has a better powertrain warranty than the Civic and was voted the #1 small car in inital quality by JD Powers & Assoc for 2001 - it's not hard to see why -

This my third Toyota. I am terribly disappointed with this particular car. I brought this car in for repair more than a half-dozen times. It left me stranded by stalling out, and something is herently wrong with the way it rides. The first was *finally taken care of when they figured out the computer was bad. I was actually looking at Lemon Law! The second problem we thought was the tires. After countless tire alignments and balance, the dealership replaced the tires and changed the bent rim. While these corrections helped initially, the problem ride persists and they have chalked it up to the 'road'. I'm trading this car in soon.

This car has been fun, fast, and reliable. It is my second Corolla and not my last. I had a Camry for 8 years before that. Toyota is great! In this car, I did not like the smaller trunk size. I have never liked the drink holders right in front of the radio, which made it difficult to pull the glass/cup out quickly in traffic. Other than that, no complaints! I have now driven the 2003 Toyota Corolla for over a month as a rental and I prefer my 2001 overall.

Not only has my Toyota Corolla CE failed my expectations for reliability..it has failed my expectations for servicing.

Very pleased

I bought the CE in May 2001 have 18500 on odo. The car is fun to drive except with ac on which feels like dragging a ton behind. The worst part is the CE is 3 speed automatic which pulls the fun to drive, but once over 30 it is good. It have a good milage and pretty smooth engine. The steering is a bit scary on highway (above 60) ans can be a problem if u have a huge lorry besides u. The interior is cramped and good for 4 small size adults or 2 tall adults. Another part is CE does not come with Rear folding seat and u have to dig a small hole in u r wallet for that.

Fun to drive in a stick.. really zips around! Quick, reliable, good on gas .. Bumpy, noisy, small .. but you're not buying a Lexus. It's a little expensive for it's size, but your paying for the Toyota name (and assumed quality). It's scary to think that for not alot more money, a Camery isn't to far away. Brakes have gotten progressivly more spongey as I've driven it (28k as of now) .. Oh yeah .. I got rear ended twice (once pretty hard) .. zero damage except scrapes. If you change your own oil, the filter is hard to get at and messy to remove.

brakes lousy

This is a good car, but the brakes are hard. My wife brought back to dealer and they adjusted the rear brakes at a cost of $35. Same problem. I complained that they charged my wife for work that should not have been needed. They would not remove the charge and the brakes still suck. Last week I drove the car and the rear brakes are making clunking sounds now.

I love it...

I used to drive a Mitsubishi Eclipse (a disaster that cost me a fortune in repair costs and eventually ended up with a cracked engine block). So I am extremely happy with my reliable Corolla S. It has great gas mileage and is very well built. I would highly recommend this car to anyone!!

Toyota has lived up to my expectation. I did two month long research and compared with nissan, honda, and other manufacturers. I settled with toyota because I have been driving toyota since 1998. Tried GM and Ford buty had to take severe financial hardship due to repair costs. Only problem I had with this corolla is that the driver sit cannot be adjusted higher or lower. other than that this is a great car.

I had a Corolla 94 before which was a good car with more than a 120K miles. That's why I decided to go with the new corolla S on 2001. I think they have improved their suspension and with the new technology on the engine going anywhere makes any trip comfortable. Although I should say I regret I didn't wait until 2002 to get the new Corolla 2003

the S model is nice. the interior is nice also. TRD does need to make more parts for the car and so does the aftermaket companies. if toyota would target the teenagers more like honda, and their civic, maybe there would be more things in the works.

I should have got a Celica or Prelude

I hate my car. Aweful suspension; body leans in turns, bouncy ride. Interior is baren. No CD player. Everything is an option. This car may last but I'll be trading mine in real soon. Look at another model of toyota.

This is the fifth Corolla I've owned. Although it's the first non-sport model I've owned, it is still a well-performing car. Fun to drive, great gas mileage, perfect reliability, nice styling. Love this car and would recommend it to anybody else looking for a compact sedan. I would recommend this car over a 2003 Corolla.

Perfect for first time buyers and those who want a car that will get them from point A to point B. One flaw, hopelessly boring. If you like your car to have some sort of personality (I know I do) this is not the car to buy.

It's been almost 1 year since purchasing my '01 LE - what a wonderful little car - there have been no rattles, squeaks or any other unwanted noises, and no recalls! the gas mileage is great, I get between 31-33 MPG in the city with the 4 speed auto, the ride is smooth and quiet - everything works great - the car starts the first time every time and I have no regrets about chosing the Corolla over the Focus, Civic, Sentra, Beetle and Protege - which are the other cars I had looked at.
