Rather than repeat everything that others have said about how awesome this car is, I'll only add what hasn't been said. HANDLING/STEERING: This is not a sports car. I am still pleasantly surprised at how well it can corner despite its weight, and how tight, but light, the steering response seems to be. I upsized my rims, and it has improved my handling. See Style section for more details. RELIABILITY: I'm a stickler for preventative maintenance, as in, I follow the book to the 'T'. It's my bible. This car has done one thing; destroyed my OCD around maintenance. I realize all of the maintenance on a car has significant safety factors built in, especially from Toyota; a super conservative company. But I felt like I had 80% of the life left in all components I've replaced to date. The biggest scheduled maintenance I've done is the timing belt. Along with it I went ahead and did the water pump, pulleys, tensioner, camshaft actuator, and the two seals. Well, when I asked for my old parts to take a look at wear, they looked new. NEW! Seriously, the old timing belt still had the white Toyota logo on it still. Well, at least now I know, even after 90k miles I could've probably gone to 150k easily, if not 200k. Well, I’m only at 94k, so I will likely never have to replace any of those components ever again for the life of this vehicle. My only worry is that I used Denso parts rather than exact originals (Aisin, etc.), but it’s supposed to be OEM spec. so hopefully no issues there. Been going full synthetic oil for the engine (runs better and sludge prevention), and regular schedule on transmission and coolant. Nothing exciting there, except that I probably could have easily gotten double the mileage between changes for all of these fluids. I don’t drive like a grandpa either, despite this car’s image, I’m a 27 year old male (see Style section for more on that). Don’t get me wrong, I’m not advocating for you to prolong the recommended service intervals, I’m simply stating what Toyota enthusiast have known for years: Toyota over specs. GREATLY. This behavior is awesome for us consumers. My only unscheduled maintenance was an O2 sensor back at 40-50k miles. STYLE/LOOKS/FIT/FINISH: This car has some nice thick high quality paint. Mine still looks mostly new, just a few chips and dings due to it being 16 years old, but probably far less of such things than a lower quality car’s paint. As a whole this car polishes up really nice still to a mirror finish, and from 5 ft away looks new. The leather is still in tip top shape, the only seat I refinished myself was the drivers, and now the whole car’s interior looks like new again. I try to clean and condition the leather a few times a year, but nothing indicates that without this it would be in any worse shape. Now, for the biggest update to the style in my opinion: NEW RIMS! I mentioned I was a 27 year old guy, well, after getting some nice 18” rims, the whole look of this vehicle is totally different. I personally disliked the bland appearance prior, but put my ego and image in the backseat. Little did I know that such a simple change would be such a drastic change! This thing actually looks….dare I say…sporty now. It definitely fits me much more, it now has the same likeness to the Lexus IS series from the same generation (which makes sense as it’s probably a very similar platform). It’s the look without the harsher, louder ride though; I haven’t noticed any difference in the comfort! TAKE A LOOK AT THE PICTURES, YOU’LL BE AMAZED: http://imgur.com/a/1RS2R

I purchased a 2001 Avalon new. I love this car but have one major problem. The paint on the hood is peeling. I contacted Toyota and they claim there have been no other complaints about this model having a paint issue. Anyone else out there have a 2001 with this issue? The other issue I have is with the sensors. I have replaced all or most of them and the check engine light remained on after the last replacement. This issue gets very expensive!

Bought our 2001 Avalon new. Replaced the timing belt at 100,000, replaced the alternator at 170,000 and the struts at 175,000. Otherwise, nothing but tires and brakes. Large comfortable four or five passenger car with plenty of zip. My other car is a Corvette when I feel the need to act like a kid.

I have brought my Avalon xls with 103,000 km. and just loss it in an accident at 243,954 km. This car runs like magic, all my friends, are so surprise how beautiful, comfortable and spacious it is on the inside. most of the people I give a ride, after being amazed by the silences and smooth ride, do not believe it is a 2001, they think its a newer model. I am going to miss this car. but now I am on edmunds researching a 2005 avalon used one. just hoping I will get a even greater one. I am now using a 2010 toyota camry for the rental, and I still would choose my 2001 avalon ahead of the camry, not for the looks from outside, but for the comfort, low noise and luxury of the ride.

I bought it new. I had emission problems with it. The computer failed. All these repairs were very expensive for the parts. By 35k, the soft suspension was shot. I had to drop the suspension and go through all the bushings, and upgrade the struts. Now it handles well. I have been "wrenching" for 30+ years. This auto is not well built, relative to toyotas of years ago. Several times I have had to buy expensive, special tools to work on it. It is very hard to work on. Our '94 Accord is a better car. We have a 4+ year old xterra thats much higher quality. I have owned some good fords (ranger), two nissans now, and one Honda. I will never buy another Toyota.

Bought it w/ 127K 5 months ago, 159K now, paid $9K (well maintained) it is really a flawless car. Sure, I had to replace the timing belt and brakes, but that is what is expected at 100K miles. The ride on this car is smooth and it takes to hard corners like a bucket of water, but it is not a sports car and that should be understood. Ride / build is Lexus quality. Even with 159K miles on it is solid over bumps and shows no sign of its age. Interior space is outstanding and power seats make good comfort and lumbar support. This is my second Avalon and looking forward to breaking 300K on this one like I did my last one. Then I will buy another 8-9 year old Avalon and start all over again!

Outside of tires and batteries, this car has had no repair work, and has never been in the shop with 80,000 miles. I do my own maintenance. Original brakes with a lot of city driving. Hey, just use the transmission to slow down. Not a hot rod, not a sports car, but runs great and handles pretty darn well too. The ride is superb and the car is extremely comfortable on long trips. Cannot ask for more than this car has given. The best value anyplace!

I bought this 2001 used Avalon car and so far zero maintenance, except for one time computer broke down after the car hit at the parking area which is covered by the warranty that I purchased at the dealership. And the CD changer which is jumping and not working anymore which is not a big deal for me I just used the radio. but other than that, Car run smoothly, easy to manuever, easy to maintain and to clean, and I should say the most reliable Car.

Bought my Avalon new in Oct.2000, my first Toyota ever. It's loaded with everything. I have 170K on it now. It has had every service required, have changed the oil every 5K. Hwy miles are 30-32mph, city 24-26. I went new car shopping today at Toyota. I love my Avalon but the new ones are bigger. Am thinking about a loaded camery. I've had many new cars and my Avalon is by far the best. I have no complaints about comfort, drivability, and looks.

After years we still love our efficient, fast, luxurious, super comfortable silent, low maintenance Toyota Avalon 2001 XL. We're both demanding drivers, but it puts up with our abuse, even jumping a tree trunk in front of the car in a snow storm and still coming out of it without wrecking. After 134,00 miles we finally are replacing original struts and shocks. A minor thing is that the check engine light comes on and off off late with an error code that may point to something related to the oil valve. At this moment the light is off though. Probably the new age of sensors comes with that kind of electronic oversensitivity.

Save your money. Own an Avalon

I just recently sold a 1994 Toyota Camry with 364,000 miles on it. My wife has a 2004 Corolla with 143,000. I love Toyota's so much, that I wanted the top of the line Toyota with all the buttons without buying a new one. I found a 2001 Toyota Avalon XLS with 122,000 miles on it. I changed the oil and that's it so far. The car has excellent acceleration, braking, and the ride is luxury car smooth. The interior was well thought out with all the storage compartments. It has all the features of any luxury car like heated seats, mirrors, leather, power seats, climate control; front and rear 6 cd changer, power sunroof, etc.

The car has performed very well. Gas mileage is good, especially for this car's size. It is extremely smooth and quiet, running as well as it did when it was new. Brakes were changed at 72K miles. Other than that, have only done fluid changes, batteries, tires, filters and timing belt/water pump -- all recommended maintenance. It is extremely comfortable on long trips. Back seat has tremendous leg and head room.

We purchased Avalon new. Only repairs were front brake pads at 80,000 miles, rear brake pads at 87,000 miles. Battery at 7 years and tires at 40,000 and again at 80,000 miles. Rides better than a Cadillac DTS. Always starts in Iowa winter and great handling on snow and ice.

I've owned my 2001 for 8 years and I still love it. Never had a problem with it after 125,000 miles. Passengers get in it today and remark about how nice and comfortable it is. I liked it so much I purchased another new 2008 Avalon 6 months ago for my wife. I kept the 2001 and use it as my daily driver. The 2001 is still worth 1/3 of my purchase price, but I don't even intend to sell it. I'll probably end up giving it to my grand-daughter to drive when she turns 16 in a couple of years. This has been the best car I've ever owned, including "S class" Mercedes and 740IL BMW. The only difference is the V-8 performance and the cost was 1/3 the price.

I purchased this vehicle from a private owner with 19000 miles on it. The only problem I experienced in the 4 years I have had the vehicle was the windshield. I noticed a humming sound coming from the windshield especially when driving at highway speeds in a cross wind. I took it to the dealer and was told that was normal. I insisted there was something wrong and asked to talk to the service manager. After speaking to him he contacted the area service rep who took a drive with me. We drove on the freeway and experienced the humming. He said it was caused by an improperly installed windshield at the factory. They promptly authorized replacing the windshield which corrected the problem.

If you want a quality large sedan, this Avalon is your car! This one has a bench seat which gives you more front seat room; wish they were still made with bench seats. I will hang onto this one because is has one, instead of purchasing a new one. I have had no mechanical problems at all. The car drives very smooth and has great pick up. The love the back end look, the exterior front is kind of boring.

This car has been virtually trouble free. There appears to be a little too much wear and tear on tires which might be the driver as well as wear demand on brakes. Comfort is incredible with no back aches after hours of driving, realiability the best of any car I ever owned. Very roomy, quiet, and resists road and external noise. Danger of falling asleep at the wheel it is so smooth. VSC has not been an annoyance but a pleasant surprise. Sunroof adds much to enjoyment of drive. Speakers and sound very excellent and I am a very discriminant listener. Compares to Lexus model as same car but much less $.

For my retiree life, I have enjoyed the economy of my Avalon. Trunk is very roomy. Would like an American seat. Needs more room in front than back. Dials need to be in front of steering for time, mileage, etc. Toyota should not scrimp on good tires on a new model, as their brand had to be replaced in 15,000 miles, when the manufacturer warranted (with fine print) 30,000. I bought a different brand and paid full price for Michelin which I asked for when purchased but they would not give to me; therefore I had to take their tires if I wanted the car. I did not like that. I got no consideration unless I replaced the shabby tires that came on it from that company.

Fantastic Car, tight as the day I bought it. Great gas mileage, quiet, comfortable, reliable. I am looking into buying a new Avalon and giving this to my son. I have had no problems other than new tires, brakes and normal oil changes. Toyota quality at its best. I bought an 03 Highlander based on my experience with this Avalon. Can't think of a better car for the money. If you are looking for a reliable car with no worries I highly recommend an Avalon. My friends comment on how well it rides, how quiet and comfortable it is on long trips. I will have this car in the family for years.

OK, I know the Avalon is supposed to be a great car, but I've had a few expensive problems with brakes. Excessive rust near the rotors caused the brakes to fail after only 35,000 miles, and again at 55,000 miles. I've been told by two dealers that the brakes will be a chronic problem. Paint on the hood is chipping and peeling, and the CD player had to be replaced after two years. Every other Avalon owner I've met loves their car, so maybe mine is the exception.

Bought with 21,000 miles. Now at 113,000, same brakes. Only one problem with faulty sensor, 27 mph on highway, 23 combined city/hwy. I sold my 97 mercedes after many problems. I would consider a 2005 avalon, except it uses premium fuel. This is the best car for the money I have owned. I am 6'4 and have more room than the Mercedes. No loss of oil after 5,000 mi between changes, oil is still honey colored. All I do is rotate tires and change oil. How can you not love this car?

Toyota really shot down their reputation with this car. I've been a mechanic for eight years and never saw a Toyota with such poor quality and reliability. It was a great car until it hit 20k. The couple of sensors were going bad; burning way to rich, alternator, compressor and power steering pump. My 87 7MGE Supra had less problems then this car. This was my 6th Toyota and my last. Toyota isn't building the cars like they used to.

No problems with car at all. JBL stereo kicks butt. Smooth ride with plenty of power. Easily fit three adults (or car seats) in the back. Just a joy to own and drive.

Have had my Toyota almost two years. I disagree with the previous reviews. We own three vehicles. The other two are American made. I always jump into the Toyota. It is comfortable for four people and has better gas mileage than the other two. Love the heated seats. I am tall and would like a little more leg room. Performance is awesome. Never have I had a problem passing or maneuvering. No mechanical problems. Highly recommend AVALON XLS! Note this is the exact same motor as the LEXUS and it provides you with more room overall. YEAH!

The test drive felt like I was driving a Camry with bigger body. Very ugly and uncomfortable interior, exterior is not for everyone. Very poor corner handling, although engine is alright. Suspension is camry alike.

Poor tire quality; Steering Rack replaced at 15,000 mi (noise when turning left); Driver's seat track replaced at 16,000 (broken weld); Dealer indifferent to problems; factory floor mats of poor quality. Otherwise, very comfortable, reliable, good performance, handling.

Rides as good or better than wife's lexus. also has more head-room than the lexus. It is fun to drive and handles well. Have had no mechanical breakdowns in 73,000 miles. Didn't have to get breaks for over 60,000 miles. Most comfortable and fun car as well as most reliable that I have ever owned.

This car has been my best experience with a Toyota product. Started with a 4 Runner then to a Camry XLS and now have the Avalon XLS which there is no comparison. I was also quite surprised with the gas mileage when using the cruise control. Makes a huge difference when traveling to use the cruise control.

Only fault is cheap tires. Factory tires were General. Sorry, sorry tires. Hydroplaned awfully. Had it not been for ABS, would have wrecked at least twice in last two years. Bought Goodyear tires, all is well. Still, a car that sells for $28,000 should have Michelins. Very quiet! Very comfortable for 6'2", 300 lbs guy. Gas mileage only 21 in city (20 with AC), but close to 30 on highway. I would like power & handling more like Maxima. However, Maxima is no where near as comfortable for big men, no contest here. Fit and finish better than any other car I've owned in my 55 years, period.

I'll be darned...

I wouldn't have considered the Avalon as an outright new car purchase but was pleasantly surprised at ride quality (on par with Volvo S-80) and feel I got a bargain at $17K. There's no way you are going to find one from a dealer for under twenty grand. Toyota reliability and savings to boot... seems trivial to gripe about the bland white color.

It is super luxurious and you won't ever like to drive a rental car, not even luxury class, after having driven this. Maintenance is minimal. The dealer is awful. Does not stick to appointed times for maintenance (had to wait 1 hour on drop off and 1 hour on pick up!). At 30,000 mile service dealer did not check everything (did not notice that trunk button does not open trunk anymore) and that tires were bald.

I have been very pleased with this car. All I've needed is my regular oil changes and just recently had to put on a new set of tires. The car looks like new (after a good wash which it gets about every other week). Mechanically, the car is in excellent condition. No problems at all.

I traded in my 1st Avalon ('85 XLS) for the new model last year after having testing the Acura, the S80, and others. The Avalon is the best car built for the money. One of the Avalon's greatest strengths. I recently learned, is its safety and handling ability. Last weekend, while driving on the highway at approx 80 mph next to a semi, I hit a large rock in the road which blew both of my right tires. I had no problem keeping control of the car, slowing down, and getting to the right. I credit the Avalon's handling with literally saving my life.

We love our Avalon!

Ever since we bought our Avalon, we have loved to drive in it. It is worth every penny of what we paid for it, though we regret now not buying the XLS. It rides like a dream, and the fuel mileage is an excellent 25 miles to the gallon.

Bought the XLS fully loaded - leather interior, JBL sound system, 16" wheels. This car runs terrific - great acceleration. Great gas mileage too - I get 24 arounf town and push 30 on the highway. Have had no problems. This is my second Toyota (my first was a 92 Camry - which is still going strong, pushing 200,000 miles). This car is best deal for money. Fit and finish are superb. Sound system is awesome. Very very quiet.

I brought a brand new 2001 avalon XL with bucket seats with power, JBL sound system, and 15inch rims. I had no problems with the brakes, tires, engine and etc. I really like this cars paint job. It is a great travel car. at the speeds of 80- 90mph there isn't much road or wind noise, which is amazing. there is one problem; after 8,000 miles the back doors open and close alot. Screws inside or something is loose, everytime i go on a bump i hear the squeeking or cracking noise on the doors. I don't know why some people compare this car with the Maxima GLE, i mean its a sports car, not a luxury family car.

I love it!!

Beginning at 15K, it began to perform like a vehicle with 4x the miles. Dealer glad to $ervice but blew off complaints with "they all do that". Sqeaking and klacking brakes, wind sway, rapid tire wear and general loose feel ... in spite of all the service. Traded at the end of year. Mediocre resale adding insult to injury. First and last Toyota for me!

2 mistakes one for thinking about buying it and the 2nd for doing it. several trips back to dealership (woodgrain-brakes-rotors-dash cracking) 2 front end accidents one with a deer and one with a vehicle at 65 Mph on the interstate and both occurences the air bags have not deployed the last time 09/04/02 the seat belt didn't even lock. Body damage was very severe to the avalon. 5th toyota vehicle we have owned this one has ruint the reputation we are finished with them all together. on a another review that it received a 3 star rating on crash test so this defies my answer to what i think--by the way the ford focus rated higher!

The Avalon is my third Toyota, and it is definitely the best. Before buying this car I looked at the Lincoln LS, Audi, Volvo, and several SUV options. The value of this car is undeniable. I chose this car based on my personal experience with the long term quality Toyota builds into their cars. It's quiet, quick, and has the best interior finish and volume of anything I looked at other than an SUV. In my opinion, Toyota builds the best car on the market today.

Car seems to want to hydroplane in heavy rain. Battery had to be replaced at 10,000 miles. Dealership had to order some parts for car and they took a long time to come in. Dealership said parts were out of stock at supplier. Smooth ride and no rattles. Excellent gas milage. Car does not have pick up like my 1989 Acura Legend when I accelerate to pass. Exterior paint job does not seem to be equal to Acura. Overall very pleased with car.

I traded a 2000 Camry for my Avalon XLS. I injured my back and found I couldn't ride in the Camry for more than 20 minutes without developing severe back pain. I was forced to do something. I shopped around for a month and looked at and drove many cars. The Volvo S60 2.4 was most like the Avalon and I would have purchased one but the dealer expected sticker which I will not pay. Toyota sold me the Avalon at invoice. I am not that pleased with the light steering feel but I am use to performance cars with big power. I'm 55 years old and grew up driving muscle cars. Overall the Avalon is exceptional in this age.
