Handicap Assessable Van! 2001 Ford Windstar SE 3.8L v6 73,201 miles $6,800 This 2001 Ford Windstar is being sold on consignment. It is a 4 owner van with a clean title/clean Carfax stating it hasnt been wrecked. The van is overall in good shape, it does have some scuffs, dings, and some rust starting. Mechanically is very sound. Runs and drives great! Very hard to find one of these Handicap Assessable vans for under $10,000! The interior is in good shape with very little wear. The ramp works like intended, the electronic switches are in a very easy to reach spot for the driver or passenger of the vehicle. This Windstar will come with a Missouri safety inspection! We bought ours used with 171,000 miles. It seems to have been well taken care of. The recall had been out for a couple of years before we bought ours, so when I brought it in, the rush was over and replacement parts were plenty. They replaced the rear axle and reinforced the front subframe free of charge. The van now has 266,000 miles on it and other than routine maintenance, we really haven't had any issues. The only gripe we have is leg room for the rear seats. You either don't have any in the middle to make the rear seat passengers comfortable or you don't have any in the rear to make the middle seat passengers comfortable. I find it amusing that people complain about having to do routine maintenance. After 100,000 miles you would expect to do struts and wheel bearings. Nothing lasts forever.

Worst vehicle I have ever owned!

I purchased a 2001 Windstar, brand new in October of 2001. Since new, this car has been nothing but problems. Major safety issues including the rear axle and front subframe (which are all over the internet), make this vehicle unsafe to drive. I have to say that FORD motor Company SUCKS, since they chose to not fix/replace my rusted and subframe. The metal completely failed and the subframe is ready to collapse! Additional problems include the instrument panel cold soldering failing, the intake manifold gasket failing, the plenum (which is sometimes called the upper intake manifold) isolated bolt gaskets/grommets failed, two alternators, one fuel pump, camshaft position sensor, coil pack, the struts, and the transmission all failed This van is a piece of crap and in my opinion, FORD SUCKS! This is the last FORD I will ever buy.

Our ford van has done us great in the past 11 years. Yes it had all the recalls on it but ford fixed each one. The reason we got rid of the van is at 298,000 miles it thrown a rod through the block. It was unexpected with no warning. Only major repair I had to pay for was the intake gaskets leaking and manifold needed replaced. I fixed & maintained the rest except tires. No transmission issues even at 298,000. We feel lucky compared to some other reviewers. Thank you ford

We bought our windstar in 2002 with 14,000 miles 2nd owner. I love my minivan. It is comfortable and gets good gas mileage. works well weather I am hauling people or cargo. has 165,000 on it but in new transmission at 154,000. no other no big problems just small stuff. But now with the rear axle and the front sub frame rust problems just don't know. Ford says it is safe to drive. fix will be months. Husband who is machinist and brother mechanic says the motor mount on pass side is split. We had planned to keep this van for a couple of more years. But husband says it is gone. I have always had a ford and now it looks like I am getting a Chrysler. Yuck! Freestar is the same chasis.

Multiple safety issues outweigh the positives.

Bought it brand new. Various mechanical issues over the years - sliding door lock had to be replaced, fuel sensor fuse had to be replaced three times, power driver seat failed and its electronics had to be replaced. Luckily husband is an engineer and did all this work himself. Check engine and ABS lights go on and off at will for last 10K miles. On the plus side, mileage is great for such a roomy mini-van. At 132K miles now and still get 22+ highway, 18-20 in mixed use. Very comfortable ride, great for hauling kids, friends and equipment. Just started to rust in past 6 months, but still looks ok. Tranny just started to slip occasionally, but overall been a very solid vehicle.

i have had this car for 10 yrs and have put only 68,000 miles on it. Have had numerous issues since day 1. We've had 2 computer unit recall, 1 rear a/c recall, and recently the cruise controll recall. We had to spend close to $1,000 on new tires and struts and shocks after only 18,000 miles. Ford nor the dealership would repair those two problems because it was past the 3 yr warranty period, though it was under 36k miles. At around 40k miles, it started to get a p0174 lean code (check engine light). I took it to several ford specialty mechanics and they all say the same: intake manifold gasket was faulty because it was made of cheap plastic. It would cost around $600 to repair.

guess we got a good one!

Bought it used with 18k miles on it. Now has 143,000 and runs just great. Had a transmission problem at about 55,000 miles but fixed at dealer andno further problem. Power doors don't always work, but the 3.8 burns no oil and no drips anywhere. Resale is terrible, so I'll drive it till it stops! Meanwhile, it remains a nice comfortable ride.

Pulled a boat back from a different province with my stepdads 01 sport. Liked it so much I bought the identical van. Other than the typical ford engineering that makes it hard to work on yourself its been a great family van. I pull trailers with it all the time and use it for road trips with the family. It gets great gas mileage, has lots of power and has no problem with the cruise set at 145km/h. I think a tranny cooler helps deal with trans problems.

Prior to this van we had another 2001 LX. We sold it with 165,000 miles. We have an SEL that has 168,200 miles Now. Sure we have had some problems, but these cars are VERY easy to repair and maintain. Forums are readily available to diagnose problems, and parts are very inexpensive. So far the car has never left us stranded. This car has a bad reputation but, it has been an overall comfortable and decent van.

I never owned a Ford before and I will probably never own one again. American cars are unreliable compared to Japanese brands. No big issues with the car so far, but the Engine light has gone on and supposedly it is a problem w/an oxygen sensor, spark plugs or vacuum leak. Trying to fix it yourself is impossible and Dealer wants $90 just for diagnostic! Guzzled gas before and now with sensor/leak problem it's consuming $10 a day just to drive around the corner! Not a lot of road noise, but the vehicle shakes terribly. It feels like it's going to break apart on the highway. Doors are quirky and won't unlock w/keyless when too cold. I'll buy a Japanese or Euro make at trade-in.

We purchased our van new and it has been an excellent vehicle. The electric doors were a great feature new but after a few years they began to not work all of the time. Last year at 160000 had trouble with the break light, engine light coming on and it has stayed on. I would still be driving today at 209000 miles if I hadn't encountered a deer.

Thats right I got almost 186,000 miles on my van.I won't bore you with details but I got maybe about $600 in mechanical maintenance in it.Also Needed the usual stuff (brakes ,oil changes, tires).I can tell you this much, the biggest secret that I learned from my brotherinlaw is change the transmission fluids early .These ford transmissions are delicate, needless to say I have changed the transmission fluid twice and thinking about doing it again(Yup Original Trans). It did need a small map sensor ($60) and a coil pack I think they are about $80.It has yet to get a wheel alignment still drives straight .I drive this car all over united states and I haul heavy car parts with it !

we had this van for 8 years , it got us around the east coast of the USA quite well until after 30000 miles, the tranny went, ecu and oxygen sensors multiple times. I'm never buying a FORD again, until they fix these problems i owned a Camry for 16 years and nothing besides the normal wear and tear. Going to stick with Japanese cars for awhile sorry Ford. Except for there mustangs, mostly problem free.

At 83000 miles, have replaced the intake manifold gasket, $1000, and ABS unit, $600. On second set of tires. Father-in-law is a car nut and says it rides like a limo, very comfortable for long trips between Houston/Denver. Styling is nice, no paint problems. Gas mileage has consistently attained the 18/24 rating. I drive conservatively and do all maintenance, so can't explain problems others have had.

When I first bought this car brand new and fully loaded it was priced $32,000. It was a waste of money because the is the worst car I've ever owned. It goes in the shop about 10 times a year. The a/c went out in the back two rows 1 1/2 years after me buying the car, the door locks dont work and doors wouldnt open($1500), the back windshield wiper feel off on freeway and it never worked, the tv vcr in the car doesnt work anymore, the speakers cut on and off in the back rows, the power seats are stuck in one position, and the check engine light never goes off! This car is horrible and I'm just going to sell it to a junk yard because its only worth $2000 now because it needs alot of repairs!

I had my Windstar for almost 2 years with really no troubles besides brakes and tires, when at 107,000 miles my real axle just breaks! I was driving down a highway thankfully only at 45 mph when i hear SNAP and see black smoke and hear a grinding noise and smell burning rubber. i thought it was just a tired but to my amazment when i looked under there van theres my rear axel lying on the ground. THANK GOD that i wasnt on a major highway going any faster than I was otherwise me and my 3 children might not be here today. If anyone already owns this van WATCH OUT!!! The axles are rusting from the INSIDE OUT and there is no way to tell!!!!!

Bought this van with ~ 70,000 miles in 2005. Did well until summer of 08 with 100,00 miles, leaving the Smokie Mts.. Torque Converter gasket blew spewing trany fluid on the poor guy behind me. Must say though that I am still running on same trany, just adding fluid every couple months. But at 85,000 brake sensor lights keep coming on for no apparent reason, the control for switching A.C. to Heat is not working, and oh when my Ford van found out that I was attempting to trade it in today, it decided to start spewing coolant.

Rear windows don't work, power locks do not work, rear defroster doesn't work. The list goes on. Never buy a Ford product again. Second vehicle an old Toyota no problems with it. They win my vote by by Ford. I learned a lot about my patience owning one of these. In dealership quite a lot.

We bought our Windstar new off the showroom floor. It did not have lots of bells & whistles but we bought it for the 5 star safety rating. We were just starting our family. It never left us stranded at the side of the road & it always started. We would have driven it til the wheels fell off but a deer had other ideas (it had 73,800 miles on it). I am very sad to see it go.

We bought it used with 71K miles. As we drove off the lot the engine light came on. The dealership we bought it from fixed it-twice. Little things such as sliding door sticking/not unlocking, passenger door lock sticking, & the rubber between the doors come off. Now we took a vacation 700 mies away & on the way back the tranny at 82k miles literally dropped when driving up major mountains in Southern OR. I've always been happy with Ford, but not too happy on this one. Will but will buy again

Bought this van used and have had it about a year. No mechanical problems yet, always starts and drives fine. 3.8L V6 has plenty of power, but no sports car. Fuel mileage averages 20 mpg. Easy to drive for its size, controls are easily reached and logically laid out. Seats are average or better for comfort and the rear seats are roomy enough. Its hard to get into the rear seat, no lever that lets seats slide/tilt forward easily. Biggest complaint is noise. The engine is always loud. Ride is smooth enough but terribly loud. Wind noise also a problem. Owned a Sienna before that was much more refine as is typical for Toyota. Overall a good buy if used but otherwise performance is only average

Do you notice some trends in these reviews. Mine is bad valve blowing oil and coolant everywhere. Expert Tire says it will take $680 to fix and flush refill fluids and clean it all up. Then they say the manifold and also tell me ford doesn't have parts. I will be checking this out. Why fix it? Look at all the review that follow up valve problems with blown transmissions! I have a hard time believing garage didn't see the manifold problem! Look at your price carefully! Consider these vans are great until about 90,000 and then a money pit. Expect tire and ford both rip you off! next time a Honda or Toyota it can't be any worse!

When we first purchased the car at 80,000 miles we were very happy with it. We've taken it on one long drive from Colo to Calif with me with pnemonia (sp?) and it was confortable anyway. Now that we've owned it for 2 years we've only had to replace the ABS module, and brakes. Something weird is happening with the fuel getting down past 1/4 tank. It won't start as if it's out of gas. We just watch the fuel gage and all seems well. Drives well and we feel really safe during snow storms. Been through a couple of blizzards and only got stuck once. Tire pressure gauge is great letting us know when to get new tires or fill up the tires with air.

Purchased this Windstar new in 2001. It was our second, the first being a 2000 which we also still have. Now have 140,000 miles and have no issues with either. 23 mpg on the highway. Always starts. No repairs or tune ups have been needed, only 1 set of tires, one set of brake shoes and regular oil changes. I suspect that people who have had bad luck with Windstar have selected poor mechanics.

Comfortable, flexible van that serves us very well. We enjoy the mini van experience, but have been dissapointed with some major repair issues. Many brake problems and 2 failures, transmission was replaced at 144000 km, intake gaskets need to be replaced every 90000 km at about $700 per time. No other troubles aside from usual maintenance. The van is great for trips, you just never seem to run out of storage space. Towing my little utility trailer is a dream with the Windstar, you can hardly tell it is behind you.

Well, the good thing is we bought the car used, July of last year. Since the car has been around for a while the few problems we have had, we could find the solution easily over the internet. Anyways we got the car for $2,800 and it has paid for itself 10 times over since then. It has a very comfortable ride, and it's safe. This car has given us less problems than the 07 Camry we bought last year.

I bought my Ford new and take great care of it.Several recalls then at 65K miles my rear axel cracked clean in half-rusted from inside and 1K for the fix. 3 months later the transmission died. Radiator also replaced-total 3,800 Now it is at 67K miles and took in today because radio won't turn off killing battery. Needs additional 500K for new fuse box and to patch leak. Will pick it up on Monday and take it as a trade in on a Toyota. Should have learned my lesson as my last Ford had to be towed out of my driveway at 80K. Husband's Ford needed a new engine at 55K miles. Have yet to have a good experience with Ford. I've finally learned my lesson!!

We bought our 2001 Windstar in 2002 with 11,000 miles. We had to replace the transmission at 40,000 miles. We called Ford and they just pretty much told us too bad for you. They were trying out a new transmission and we were one of the unlucky ones. It gets horrible gas mileage and it seems to always be in the shop for the same problem. Next time it will be a Honda or Toyota for us! The Ford wind star is junk.

Had a transmission replaced FIVE TIMES IN TWO AND A HALF YEARS - ONLY TWO WERE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. Horrible customer service cost me $8K in legal costs just to get out of vehicle and Ford was horrible - owned four Ford vehicles before this and WILL NEVER OWN one again after - even sold my FORD stock before it hit junk price, congrats Bill Ford - you know how to ruin a family name.

We got this van because of the great safety rating and our growing family. However, it needed a new transmission at 36,000 miles...just after the warranty ran out. The Ford dealership and national Ford office were no help at all. This is the LAST Ford I will ever buy! Even though I'm very patriotic, I'm looking to the Japanese car companies now, as their quality and reliability are so much better. American Car companies need to get with the program and make some quality cars!

This has been a very good van. Hauls a goodly load, pulls the boat, and have had no maintenance issues at all. Bought it used for $7,500 in 2003 at a cheapo used car dealer and it has taken us on many a trip. Now has 139,000 miles. This has been one of the best car values I have ever owned. Reading some of the other reviews I see some real disappointments in this very auto. It seems Detroit's big problem is being consistently good, not hit-or-miss in quality. The engine has always been noisy in the cabin, and that would be my only complaint.

This is a good van to drive when it works. I've had my Windstar for 60K miles and have experienced all kinds of problems. Recurring problems with the air intake system. The transmission gave out at 60K miles. I was told there are serious design flaws in both the air intake system and transmission. Power rear doors and power locks stick. The power steering pump gave out. Never again!

I have always driven American cars except for my 97 Toyota Land Cruiser. I bought my Windstar in 2001 when I had two car seats for the kids. Today, five years on, the car runs fine and has served us well but it simply is not wearing well. We have had no problems mechanically -- everything works but things are aging badly. All door hinges -- especially rear gate -- take too much effort. Transmission is okay but not great. The point of mentioning my 97 Toyota (with 100K on it) is that it feels way more solid and drives better than the van. Granted, the Toy is also worth twice the Ford at this point but I'd rather drive a used Toy than a new Ford. So, I doubt that I will ever buy another.

Hard to find a van with such great features and an attractive look. We looked for months to catch a great deal and what a deal we got. Bought it 5 years used and still looked brand new. Lots of power and love the easy oil changes compared to my 2001 Ford ZX2 (oil filter almost impossible to remove) that I currently own as well. Have newborn twins and a 3 year old and it fits them all nicely and the strollers and groceries as well. Overall it has impressed this Ford Man!

Rear fan for A/C and heating goes out every year for $100 a pop. OUCH! After 100,000 miles transmission, shelled out. $2800. Now A/C compressor locked up. $750. Very high maintenance on this van. Also has trouble with dust on auto door locks. Suspect poor engineering and will now look into higher quality vehicles. Good-by Ford, hope you do well with one less customer.

In 4 years that we have had this car, we have in the past year put in over $3500. This includes $1200 for intake manifold problem where the oil leaked. Funny I saw the same problem noted also on this website review. Then a few months later we ended up replacing the engine at a cost of $2500 with Ford pitching in the other half. Now we are having to replace the ABS computer brain that controls the hydraulics for the brakes. That is $1200. The dealership has offered to work with us on this repair as well as offering us an option on purchasing another car with them like a Freestar. I am VERY DISAPPOINTED that this car would have had $5000 in repairs while under 85k miles.

Bought the van new in '02. From the very day we bought it, it had electrical problems. In 3 years it had 11 electrical repairs. The power seat quit a few times, the dome lights quit a few times, the rear window blew in on a cold morning when defroster turned on. The windshield was replaced because it wouldn't seat properly. Dealer couldn't figure out electrical problem, so they replaced the entire wiring harness inside. After warranty expired the relay and wiper motor blew during heavy downpour (dealer fixed under warranty anyway). Other than too many electrical problems, we loved the van. Couldn't trust it anymore, traded it for a Honda Pilot.

I bought this vehicle used. The 5 star safety rating was the big attraction. It has performed well and is very reliable. Had to put 2 new tires on at 40k miles. Previous owner had knocked wheels out of line and never had them realigned. My van doesn't have all the options that some of the Windstars have but that will be less to break in the future. I had one problem with a fuel metering valve that Ford replaced for free. It was covered under a technical service bulletin. I'd like better fuel economy but otherwise really like this vehicle.

Great utility and a little luxury go a long way - we have had no issues mechanically with the van. Only minor electrical problems (all under warranty) with the onboard VCR. We have 3 young kids - the remote sliding doors are a godsend. Easy to get in and out of - easy to load up and reasonable comfort and mileage. Great sound system and climate controls. Has stood up quite well for the abuse it has been given. Traction control works great on snowy days - very safe feeling dependable car. We leased it and elected to buy.

If this is Ford's idea of "quality is job one" then these should be built in China. Bought brand new, and on drive home from dealers lot fuel line came off gas tank. 1 week later both rear shocks go out (wasn't hauling anything). Had passenger sliding door seal replaced twice, as water was getting in cabin. At 37000 miles entire front rack had to be replaced (out of warranty). Have had approximately 8 sensors replaced (at $200 each). And at 70000 miles manifold gasket went out. All the while dealer and Ford say sorry but don't offer any reasonable compensation or replacement. Been driving Fords for 20 yrs... won't ever buy a Ford again!

After 2 weeks of grueling searches and comparison shopping..we found the Windstar to be the best value on the resale market. Let's face it, dealerships want a small fortune for someone's used high mile van! But here is semi-luxury combined with simple design. Parent friendly elements paired with style. Mostly it offers separation of our 3 children without feeling we are driving a city bus, yet there is still leg room for the 12 year old! The ride is quiet, the van handles a van.It seems only the husband feels it should handle like a sports car. I have previously owned Caravan and Aerostar (yikes!), I like the caravan for long life durability but am well pleased with my Windstar!

Over $1200.00 in repairs to figure out that Ford changed the valve covers causing oil to be sucked into the intake manifold and ruin all the seals and gaskets. Lot's of electrical problems w/ lights that come on from short circuits. Very bad design flaws. Slider doors don't stay lined up. To many bad things to list... stuck with a worthless, badly designed lemon.

We purchased this vehicle in April 2001 for over $30,000. It was been recalled at least 5 times the first year we had it. There was a grinding noise that we asked our servicing dealer about at least 3 times and were told was normal. We were just stranded 200 miles from home returning from vacation because the transmission spewed out all it's fluid at a stop light. 3 months out of warranty but only 23k miles. A $30k vehicle that lasts less than 4 years. Roadside assistance was a joke as well, offering to give me the name of a tow company but having to charge me $70. Third generation ford family will not replace this vehicle with another Ford. Honda next time.

Much less money than competing imports. In 3 years and 36000 miles no problems other than a check engine light caused by a bad sensor (EGR flow P0401) and covered by warranty. Good acceleration for a van, lots of room especially with back bench folded down or pulled out. Feels safe and solid to go along with 5 star crash rating.

Check engine light came on, fixed sensor for $150 at Ford dealer. Came on again in a week, had to pay for another diagnosis, but pointed again to sensor which was just repaced...dealer perplexed as to what could be worng said "its fine those lights always come on". Next ABS light and the red brake light came on together which according to the usre manual sidnals a fault in the ABS system...deal diagnosed again but could not figure out why those lights came on. This is a vehical with what could be nice features but it is not built to last. WE still owe $3600 on this beast and was hoping to have a few years w/o paymnets...I learned my lesson next time a Toyota.

This was 2nd Windstar - traded 1st one because of electrical problems. Nothing's changed - dealer nor corporate engineers can fix. The way they get around the lemon law is to say it's always a different part. I have already got rid of my Ford Explorer and will do same with Windstar and will NEVER buy Ford again. Ford is also a customer of my manufacturing plant – they are the slowest payers and every year they dictate a lower price for products than they agreed to in writing. Lawsuit against Ford? They have more $ and put more manufacturers out of business than all other car companies. I don’t even care if I loose them as a customer.

Overall this Van performed pretty much as expected. There was a rating ding about the side pannel blocking sight which is my only safety complaint. For a van the vehicle did quite well. However, it took three years to fix the right rear sliding door. Even though the warranty was up the company honored the repair work (labor and parts) because they never were able to fix the thing until this month. (My lease is up next month) Traction control system went bad about thwo months ago and it took $600 dollars and a long time to fix.

This is the second Windstar we have been afflicted with. The first was a 1999 and we finally got rid of it because in the heat, the rear sliding doors would pop ajar. This new one has also had issues with the sliders ( the same issue). Now, I am finding plenty of little things going wrong. I am just tired of spending my time in the dealership. We have also discovered that the rear heating system is poorly designed. There is a vent aimed at the drivers' seat. So, when the kids are cold, but the driver is warm, too bad for the driver (or the kids)- the driver roasts while the kids still shiver.

So far, no problems. I have heard horror stories about this 3.8 engine blowing head gaskets, hopefully they have fixed that problem. Vehicle is everything I thought it was supposed to be, being a minivan and all. Dual auto- sliding doors make it useful with 2 little ones. Don't think there is one thing that has gone bad in this vehicle, other than the VCR for some reason won't pull out. Not that it matters since I'd rather it stay where it is. The rear reverse sensors do get annoying as it does beep alot even when nothing is behind the vehicle. I just hope that everything continues working as great as it has been.

My wife and I recently rolled up our sleeves and ventured into the uncharted territory of minivan ownership. We immediately fell in love with the smooth ride of the Windstar and both felt that we would gladly sacrifice cornering prowess for a smooth ride. In the end, we couldn't get the Windstar's ride or reputation of safety out of our minds and have no regrets about our decision. With lots of power, great visibility, a smooth ride and almost no road noise, we feel very comfortable bombing around town or heading out on a long trip.

The Windstar is a very utilitarian vehicle. It has a great safety rating and seems to be a very solidly built vehicle. The motor is quite powerful with the 3.8 V-6, however the transmission/ shifting seems to be a little rough at times. I got the 0% financing for 60 months - that helped close the deal. I am also a Ford man. I don't like most GM vehicles and I don't trust Chrysler/ Dodge reliability. (Caravans used to have a reputation for early transmission failures.)

Nothing but trouble. Ford bought back my 1996 and traded me for a 2001. This Van is no better and Fords Customer Service is a joke. Dealers can fix problems and are no help in getting Ford to help. Escalating the problem higher in the ford coporation is just a waste of time. They will make will try to convince you that the failed to please only in your case. Make your life simple Stay away from Windstars!

I worked for a company that gave me a free company car every year (20 in all). In 2001 I was laid off and needed a car quickly so I purchsed my company car at 26M. Now at 45M the transmission shutters from 3-4th gear. Every Winstar I ever had (6 in total) had a shuttering transmission. I thought by now they would have fixed it. Other than that it's been reliable.

Solid Performance

I like the Windstar's interior and the van is great for our 3 kids. The only down side I have found so far is the van could use a bigger engine. Only has 190 hp.

Thank god we bought this van!

My wife and I traded my 2000 F-150 (std 2wd, 5 spd sport truck...bought 2 weeks before my wife became pregnant w/ our FIRST daughter...worthless for kids)and we traded our 96 Taurus LX w/ the 24v motor and duals, leather, etc. The dealer paid off our trades, and we paid 17,500 for a 2001 w/ 20k. Dealer was honest, fair, and easy to deal with. Van has great fit and finish inside, except passenger side sliding door rattles over bumps. Van feels solid and safe, and for once I got a Ford with a smooth shifting tranny.

I enjoy the features offered. The only thing that I do not like is the seatbelt configuration. If you remove the rear seat, you lose the use of the seatbelts for the center two seats.

I can't believe how my opinion of Ford products has changed. I currently own two Ford products. (A 2000 Lincoln LS Sport, 2001 Windstar SEL). This is the worst any vehicles have ever performed for me. The van has been recalled 5 times so far, and the check engine light is on now at only 11,000 miles and regular service. The van rides well, is not as noisy as some would say, but has proven very unreliable thus far. I never thought I would feel this way. Oh why in the name of Henry Ford has this happened?

Granted I just bought it and bought it used (low miles), and I LOVE it. I test drove most all of the vans out there and this one has the best pick-up by far. It has a nice big engine in it which I was really looking for, is a safe vehicle and I like the exterior design of not having to see those awful looking sliding door tracks in the middle of the back panel. It was by far the biggest van inside and I find the legroom fine in the back. I love driving this vehicle and can't wait to take my next trip in it!

With 2 boy kids we took the van plunge. A year later the SE is very satisfying. Sleeps outside and looks as good today as at delivery. Wheels are easy to clean. Oil changes are a breeze (though 5w-20 oil can be tricky to find) The van is spacious though kids will find a way to beat each other its more effort now. The van is almost too comfortable. At 6'1" #245 at least once I've wandered on a dark and quiet road. The back seat is great for waiting out kiddie parties. Downers: Unresolved whirring noise at lights (guess: power steering.) Dealer couldn't or wouldn't fix it. Needs more pickup power (but then all minivans get cut off) The lady differs but to me traction control is hype.

I've had nothing but problems with this vehicle and the dealership. Many recalls on this vehicle. Many small exterior problems, like the edging coming off, missing caps for rear wipers. I purchased two of these at the same time.

Took another chance

Had leased a 1999 Windstar - glad we did not buy - as we went through two transmissions - and were on our noisy third. Got an "Early Bird Termination" letter from Ford and got rid of the 1999 lemon after only 28 months of the 36 month lease and leased a new 2001 Leased another one - 2001 Windstar SE - for under $400 per month - fully loaded with leather, power sliding doors, and entertainment center.
