'01 Durango with 4WD is my all-year get-around in MPLS. Bought with 145k, now at 154k. It's an older car and I don't know the service history, but it's running okay despite many small needs. 4WD works well, trans is still good, and it has to crank a bit to start but runs fine. Pretty reliable, only stranded me once when the alternator went. I did fix a few small things myself. At this age with some miles on her, she has a $400 problem about every six months. This is basically a rental fee for the car and I don't mind it too bad, the price was right. So far it's been tires (regular wear and tear), TPS (cheap fix you can DIY), Crank Position Sensor (replaced twice, don't know how it went bad in 6 months, also DIY but tricky), front brakes (not unusual for a heavy, heavy vehicle), alternator (plus wire fix on loom at the connector), and just last week a rear brake seal. Interior okay, it's aged pretty well. Couple rust spots (midwestern car, no big deal). Burns about a quart of oil every month. AC works okay, I don't really need it up here. Heat could be better, but is sufficient. Starts okay on MN winter mornings, let her warm up and she'll run fine.

An SUV only a mother could love.

I recently aquired my mother's 15 year old, 233,000 mile black Dodge Durango. She has driven this car since I was 5 years old, and now she has passed it onto me. It seems Dodge really struck gold with the 4.7l V8 and 4A because it has been through Florida summers and North Carolina winters and still starts up everyday without an issue and shifts like silk. The engine and transmission have not been rebuilt or replaced, which astonishes my entire family because we frequently hear about the horror stories people have with transmissions in Dodge RAMs and others. Corporate must have visited the factory the day my mother's vehicle was built, especially being a FCA automobile, because it runs like a top. The only issues that I have found seem to be small electrical problems, a blown fuse every once in awhile for a driver's side taillight and the drivers door lock does not work (which I suspect is result of some 'maintainance' from my mother and father. Other than that, all the windows still roll up and down, albeit slowly, the headlights and fog lights still work, and all the dials in the instrument cluster still work. Another downside is the appalling fuel economy, with only averaging 13mpg even at 70mph and 1750rpm on the freeway. But with the vehicle weighing almost 4700 lbs and having a 4.7l V8, it does make sense. All in all, I would recommend this vehicle to anyone that needs a work horse and still needs it to start everyday.

I bought the truck new in 2001 and raised two boys during our tenure with the truck. It has been to countless sporting events and too many road trips to number including weekend camping trips and Boy Scout Summer Camps (Don't ask/Don't tell). Never let me down on the road. My two boys both learned to drive in this truck and both used it as a first vehicle. Note: Don't let your kid deliver pizza in this truck unless you own a gas station. It drinks the gas, but so do all vehicles of this size and age. I have pulled boats, cars, U-Haul trailers, etc. The 4WD works great for those very occasional snow/ice days in Texas. I have had the transmission serviced every 30K miles, as I heard this was a weak link in the truck. I have replaced numerous items such as the front drive shaft, radiator, driver window motor (X3 I think), starter sensor and ECM. I probably should replace the rear leaf springs, but I have not. With 177K miles, it drinks a little oil and the A/C needs charged about once a season, but it has been the best vehicle I have owned. No major problems. I hesitate to get rid of it, but time to pass it to another family... I would not hesitate purchasing another Durango, but going smaller and sportier, 2008 Chevy Trailblazer SS.

I grew up riding in Dodge vehicles and they were always great. It's clear now that Dodge is more concerned with the bottom line than with producing a safe, dependable vehicle. Every Dodge vehicle that my family has owned in this millennium has had chronic problems and ultimately died because of cheap, shoddy workmanship. I've owned 3 and this is absolutely my last one. A shame, too, because I'd love a Charger but I don't trust these cars as far as I can throw them. I bought mine used with ~148K miles. The engine only had ~40. That tells you something right there, but I figured hey, new engine. A/C never worked, no matter how much money I poured into it (about a grand this year alone). No big deal though. I just live in north Texas. (Note: Sarcasm. It's 106 today w/ 67% humidity). The brakes are HORRIBLE! You'd better hope you never really need to slam on your brakes because you WILL find yourself in the trunk of the car ahead of you. ABS kicks in WAY earlier than is necessary. I don't ride my brakes and I don't brake hard, but the ABS would constantly kick in. I constantly took mine in to have the brakes checked, convinced that something was horribly wrong because there's no way they could be that bad and be "normal." They tested fine every single time. Not near enough power for how much gas they guzzle. If you want me to pay $80 every time to fill you up, you'd better get up and go when I ask you to. Chronic overheating problems that cost me over 3K. Replaced the radiator twice, water pump twice, fans, all of it. Ultimately, after meticulous maintenance and thousands of dollars, mine wound up with a cracked engine block and brown gaskets, destroyed engine despite being well maintained and full of fluids, and towed back from whence it came with a "sayonara" and a finger from me. Never another Dodge. Never, ever again.

I liked these things the first time I saw one, and have enjoyed my 2001 Durango as it comes up on its 11th birthday at around 125000 miles. 4.7 V8, almost no problems at all to speak of for 10 years, then 11th year I have replaced Throttle Sensor (vehicle quit on the freeway) and a few o2 sensors and one power window. Other than that no issues for a decade, and a fantastic vehicle for my wife and two daughters. Still driving it and plan to get at least two more years out of it.

I paid $7200 for my '01 Durango 3 years ago with about 80K miles; it now has 146K and is getting me through another Vermont winter like a CHAMP. Sure, the mileage is atrocious -- I average 12.6 -- and it isn't the smoothest ride around, but the V8 has serious punch (still!) and with the 3rd row seat I can haul a mess of kids around. I've had to have some repairs -- the worst being $900 to get the heat working down on my feet (kind of essential up here) -- but this thing owes me nothing.

Overall after only owning the truck for 5 months it has been a good vehicle. At 117,000 miles the bearings in the drive shaft literally shot right through the drive shaft cause still unknown. Handles great on the road and off the road. Smooth quiet interstate drive. Overall design is great. Quality is okay but not amazing, after all said and done wish I would have kept my old suburban.

I had the 01 Dodge Durango R/T 5.9L V8 and LOVED it! It was so fun to drive, it was safe, and extremely comfortable & spacious. The only downfall to the big motor is the gas mileage is horrible, which is the only reason I sold mine. I had to get something with better gas mileage when we moved further from my job. Fun and reliable but be prepared to pay more for gas

4.7L SLT+ with Tow package, posi 3.92 gears. Mine was a leased vehicle with 23K on it and 1 yr old. Now has over 230,000 miles and has turned out to be one of the best vehicles I have ever owned and I believe one of the best ever made in respect to what it was designed for. A great family vehicle that is very comfortable on long trips and can still tow heavy loads. I've towed 7000. Mid size makes it easy to park along with very sharp turning radius. Handles great. The 4.7L powertrain has proven to be very reliable. I have not had any engine accessory problems or transmission problems at 230K! I had one sensor that had to be replaced that cost $25 and a radiator fan. 3rd row seat folds flat.

I bought my Durango over 4 years ago with 40,000 miles on it and now I have 120,000 miles on it. Even with all of that driving it is still running strong. I have had absolutely nothing wrong with the engine during that time. I live on a farm and have driven this vehicle through some harsh conditions and it has never failed me. It has been by far the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. My only gripe is the ABS. When they engage they don't feel that great but actually work fairly well. The Durango looks big but handles like a smaller vehicle. Can be parallel parked into fairly tight spaces. This is a very versatile vehicle!

I recently purchased a 2001 Dodge Durango. Engine blew due to some "mysterious oil loss". Dealership claims it's our fault (of course they would...it's still under warranty). The crappy engine is just part of the laundry of of problems. Electric windows that don't work (Hope I don't crash into a body of water). Multiple comfort options in the seats...don't work(anybody who drives has to be my height, no more no less). Brakes are junk. On the brighter side, it looks pretty and is very spacious...Yipeee!

I bought this truck new in 2001. Other than replacing the AC I have only had it in the shop for maintenance (brakes, tires, oil changes etc.) I have taken it on long trips multiple times and have used it to travel back and forth to work. Never had a break down. Lots of storage for long trips and plenty of room for 6 large guys for those trips to the ball game. I have also drove it on the beach every summer since I've had it. Great off road vehicle. Hope to have this truck for many years to come.

This vehicle has been a great family car, plenty of power, comfortable, and very fun to drive. My work car was a Durango which convinced us to buy one for the family. Have taken it on long trips and to the snow where the 4x4 came in handy. Have routinely serviced which I'm sure is why we have never had a break down or any serious mechanical problems.

The electrical system, brakes and engine are junk. This is my third Dodge and I have had problems with all of them. My 2005 Dodge Ram kept breaking down and every time we'd take it in they'd charge us $100 and say there's nothing wrong with it. Same with my Durango, even with the check engine light on they say there's nothing wrong yet my car just stopped on he road. It's still not fixed and I can't sell it the way it is. Now my husband has a 99 pickup and you can clearly tell the cylinders are missing. It jerks you back every time you drive it and he took it in today. They charge him another $100 for nothing. It shows up on my friends diagnostics machine. SCAM!

This Durango has gone 134,000 miles with very little repair (mostly wear and tear). Like most Dodge cars the interior is quality material and has lasted beautifully through two kids growing up. Unlike Fords and Chevys, it is comfortable to get in and out of and easy on the back going long distances. The 4WD is great and has gotten me out of some tough construction sites. I enjoy driving this vehicle as much as my husband. Just wish they put the extra handles on the newer models and it had better gas mileage (but that is what happens when you buy a V8)

I love my Durango. My wife and I have always liked the styling of the Durangos especially over the newer ones. I have had a chance to drive it on a long trip. I averaged 16 mpg at 80 and 17 mpg at 75 mph. I thought this was good considering I have the 5.9L V8. This is fun to drive especially since there is absolutely no need for an engine that size in this SUV. The power is excessive and what make it fun. I try to take it easy because in town it gets 12 mpg. Again not bad for an engine that size. The 3 rows of seats are perfect for a family. That is the reason i bought this as we have 3 children that need to be seperated. With the 3rd row there is still good room behind the last row for stuf

This is our seond Durango as our first was a 2000 with 120,000 miles on it before it protected our twin 2 yr olds, mother in law, and wife when a rav4 stopped dead in front of us. The rav 4 did not do as well. We have had none of the problems typically heard of and it has been very reliable. 4.7L MPG is not what it should be but 18MPG. 3rd seat, leather and rear air are really cool for this size truck. Can not beat it in snow!!

We've had this car for almost 3 years. It has been very reliable and functional. We cross-shopped it against full-size GM's, and have been reasonably happy with our choice, although we've regretted it at times as well. Not as smooth as a Tahoe, and not nearly as roomy (the Durango is very narrow for an SUV), but much cheaper and has all the capability of a full-size (can tow as much and haul as many people). While we haven't loved it, and at times have wished we spent extra on a full-size GM, our Durango has served its purpose very well.

This vehicle has performed outstanding service as a daily driver to/from work, a family hauler for me, wife and four children, and long distance road cruiser. We take use the Durango on three to five road trips per year of 500-900 miles one way. When pulling a 12 foot U-Haul trailer full of luggage, bikes, water sports gear over the Appalachians to Virginia the 5.9L V8 barely notices the load. The car is comfortable on highway even when loaded with 6 people. The safety and confidence associated with the full time 4WD with its full time four wheel torque split has proven itself in midwest thunder downpours, Appalachain rain/fog/sleet, and Wisconsin snow.

I bought this Durango with just under 100K on the clock. Had the tranny serviced when I did, and she's run fairly well since for a $10K car. I've had problems with the weak AC (tried everything, nothing seems to work), and poor cooling (had overheated twice, both times on hot summer days, on the highway). 4X4 is amazing, with low setting in the transfer case, able to extract itself from frame-rail deep mud. Mileage OK, 15 while commuting to work, 18 on the highway. Interior perfect for growing family and dogs. Seats 7, but can be parallel parked by anyone. Ride is somewhat trucklike, but expected from a body-on-frame design like this. A best fit for comfort, convenience + capability.

Engine is strong. That's the end of the good news. Brakes are horrible, expect warped rotors Aand drums every 15,000m. Add to that the fact that these brakes are under-designed and will not stop this vehicle safely and should be recalled. The BCM module is a joke and must be replaced by dealership whenever your lights/wipers/etc go haywire (and they will). You'll get raped for this stupid charge that is designed into Dodge's grand service scheme. Then there's the upper balljoint issues. Dodge will be out of business if they keep producing junk like this. Never another Dodge/Chrylser product for me...ever.

I am the first owner of an 2001 Dodge Durango, which I drove off the lot with about 7-8 miles on it. This is an extremely powerful, comfy to drive, versatile and reliable car. Biggest repair was new computer, which I got aftermarket with lifetime warranty for about $350. Only other repair was the idle control valve. Would buy one again, but delayed, because the new version is ugly, chunky and way too big. So I decided to drive it until it doesn't drive anymore, junk it and find another car as good. Friends sold theirs with 250k miles on it! Amazing.

Purchased my '01 Dark Garnet SLT+ in August of '03 w/25k. I find that the 4.7 motor has plenty of power as well as "good musclecar sound" for the hot rodder in me. You get a good view of the road due to sitting up higher, but the A pillars are wide and provide a blind spot to be watched. Only two items I would change if I could are get the 4 wheel ABS (the 2wABS is useless). I would also get the full time 4wd xfer case. Mileage is about the same either way, and since you paid for 4x4 why not be able to use it all the time. Only service issues as of 56k are leaking steering rack, aux coolant pump ,and upper ball joints under recall. Mileage is 9-12 in town, and 16-18 hwy.

It hauls the 21 foot inboard better than my father's new Chevy truck. I knew gas mileage would stink, but what can you expect from an SUV? We owned a V6 Chevy Blazer which did just slightly better in gas mileage, but it was the worst vehicle I have ever owned, always in the shop. Family members with TrailBlazers and Envoy's love the Durango's looks and powers.

This was our second Durango. We enjoy fishing and in 96, finally bought a boat. Did a lot of research on SUV tow packages. It paid off. The 5.9 w/tow package is great. You have to remind yourself that a boat is in back of you! We're able to stay cool and tow without a worry. Looked forward to lousy back roads at remote fish camps. The 4WD is there when YOU WANT IT. Plus "the little things". Rear accessory plug. Use it for tailgate party or light up a boat ramp at night. Cup holders for American size drinks! Great tunes. Cool rims. Runs on reg gas. Seat warmers. Just the right size to give it a quick wash yourself. Just plain comfortable.

I purchased this Durango the week before 9-11-01. I put 24,000 miles the first 2 years. The vehicle did not have any issues the first 3 years. I did get 17-19 MPG on the highway. The cloth interior is better and longer lasting than the leather. The price of the Durango Sport was the best deal compared to the Ford Explorer Sport. I paid $21,000 for it new. Now, in Dec, 2005 The only issue I had was replacing the front wheel bearings. The clunking I heard was not the ball-joint issue I had received as a possible recall item. The Durango continues to have great overall reliability. I like the style better than the fatter Durango. Why get a hemi if it weighs 500 lbs more?

40,000 miles and lets see... The cruise control cuts off and on, the left side window has stuck closed a time or two, the rear wiper is inoperable, and the horn blows and lights flash when driving below 8 mph. I love going to Wal Mart in this one. I get lots of attention and gestures. Gotta trade it soon. I do like the looks and the performance. Gas mileage is terrible, but most SUV's are.

I've had nothing but good luck with my Durango. I get darn good mileage considing the size of the vehicle. Around 20 mpg average with the 4.7L V8. It's been extremely reliable as I have not had a problem in the 4 years and over 85,000 miles I have owned it. The only draw back is it likes to eat tires. I'm going through a set about every 25,.000 miles.

We wanted a V-8 SUV. Grand Cherokee was top on our list, but it wasn't any bigger inside than the Acura we were replacing. Suburban/Tahoe was too big for my wife, and too expensive for me! Then we found the Durango--fully loaded SLT 4.7L!!! It is the perfect blend of size--big enough for our small family, small enough that my wife is comfortable in it; plenty of power to tow the toys, and didn't break the bank (thanks in part to low resale value and bad press!). Drives pretty well (not as smooth or sturdy-feeling as a Sub/Tahoe, but not bad), great power (feels as fast as our '01 Acura TL), interior is as nice as Chevy's LT packages, and we even get near 20 freeway mpg (speed limit)

I have been driving full-size and midsize SUV's for more than 20 years and have owned Fords, Chevys and GMCs before buying a 2001 Durango. The Durango is the best engineered truck in its class. It offers excellent power, impressive acceleration and uch tighter handling and turning than the other SUV's I have owned. There is also a much finer level of detail to things like power outlets, electrical controls and heating/cooling than on the other trucks. I have spent a lot of time in this truck in all sorts of bad weather and it has never been anything less than stable and sure- footed, and does not feel like its ready to rollover in sharp curves. My only complaint is poor fuel economy.

If you don't want to buy one, don't test drive one - once you hear the guttural growl of the V-8 and feel this truck's ability to get you off the line, you're hooked. The retro, aggressive body style adds to the primal draw. But, this is definitely a truck. If you want the smooth and quiet ride of a land yacht, you'll be disappointed. Less aggressive tires can help to smooth the ride of this beast, but it's not domesticated. Nevertheless, if you want a go- anywhere, pull-anything workhorse with some family-friendly appointments, like a third row, leather interior and space to move around, this is it.

We purchased the Durango because of its size and 7 passenger seating. We have the SLT AWD with 4.7. over 60000 miles and the vehicle has only been to the dealer for repair once to replace the AC under warrenty. The truck still looks new, the interior held up great, and it still looks great today. Power from the 4.7 was good and the sound coming from the exhaust is sweet. Are only complaints surround the AC and Brakes. The AC does have trouble cooling in really high temperatures and the anti-lock brakes are not very comforting when engaging, but upgrades pads and rotors fixed some of the problem.

This is a real SUV, not a "High Wagon" or "car based" unibody pretender. It has a real metal truck frame, a 5.9 Liter 360 cubic inch V8 not a 4.x or 3.x Liter. (Those CIDs belong in V6s for you youngsters that don't know any better.) The Durango rides smoothly, but let's you know if you hit a bump. It sucks down the gas like it's goin out of style. A perfect American SUV to drive out in CA or NY just to tick off the tree huggers. The Infinity sound system needed no aftermarket upgrades, and the fit and finish of the vehicle (built in NJ) was comprable to the imports.

Excellent choice for a mid-size SUV. 3 Sets of seats extremely beneficial especially the fact that both sets of rear seats lay down flat when the space is needed and the seats are not. 4.7 litre V8 is extemely potent. I tow a 19' boat and it does a great job. I own the 2 WD version (I live in the south no need for the added weight, suspension, etc.) so the ride is really plush for an SUV. Additionally, I get over 20 MPG on the highway. 3rd SUV I've owned in 8 years (2 Jeeps and now the Durango) and it was one of my favorites. If you're considering it, I'd highly recommend it.

This truck is ideal if you just can't decide if you want a rough and ready off roader or a polite and refined comfort car. The Durango SLT Plus is extremely comfortable with many luxury features such as heated leather seats. Comfortably seats a family of seven. Off road it's strong, agile, and easy to drive. If you lift it a few inches and add larger wheels, it's a great rock climber. It's quiet, smooth, and easy on the freeway.

Looked forward to buying it since about July of 2002 and don't regret a thing. Truck has been nothing but good to me. Only problem was the rear speed sensor going at 76k but I knew what the problem was and diagnosed it myself with no problems. $35 dollar part, spent about an hour replacing it. Had zero problems over 27,000 miles in 15 months. Great in Minnesota winters. Towed 6000lb trailers with no problem in the relatively flat midwest. Got rear-ended hard by an F350 dually, skidded off road, and rolled. Not a single straight piece of metal left on the Durango, but driver walked away one bruise, and all doors and hatch still worked. Have owned 4WD trucks and SUV's since 1956 and this is my favorite stock one. The 2003 (last) New England Winter didn't slow it down, neither did my two-way trip across the US on I-90 in January. It's tough enough to handle medium intensity offroading, unaided. And it handles remarkably well on the highway, stable even at extreme speeds. It's a good ride.

Overall we have been pleased with our Durango. It gulps gas, but we knew that when we bought it. My only real gripe is that for $35,000 the quality of the interior materials leave a lot to be desired. My Durango is an SLT, but it has the 17" alloy wheels/tires, the optional 3rd seat in the rear,a power drivers seat, upgraded cloth interior and the 5.9 liter engine. I manage to get 15mpg on the highway which is better than most vehicles in its class. It handles terrific in the snow, ice, and severe thunderstorm/terrential rains in addition to good driving conditions. Its cargo capacity is awsome for a Christmas shopping spree at Birch Run or hauling 25 40lb bags of lava rock for landscaping (the suspension never flinched)!!! It holds 6 adults and one child comfortably as well as 2 dogs, 2 adults and luggage for a cross country trip.

For the moms out there, I purchased the Durango, not only for looks, but for the all steel construction. I am very thankful I did. A few months ago, we were in a major accident in which the Durango spun around and flipped over twice down an embankment. No one was hurt, and my baby slept through the whole thing. All the seatbelts worked great, and we didn't have any trouble getting out of the car. When I looked at the Durango after we exited the car, there were no dents on the doors or anywhere passengers were sitting!!! The Durango held up VERY well, and we'll be getting another one when our lease is up.

30,000 miles and its like new. The interior is very comfortable and luxurous. The leather 8 way heated, adjustable seats are very nice, and for long drives - very comfy. It's attractive and well insulated from outside sounds. The sound system is excellent. On the downside - gas mileage is low (although the tank is good size). The back liftgate is too hard to bring down, and for as large as it is, a van would have more room for the family. The dealer experience sucked - worst I ever had.

Nothing on it has broken at all, and it continues to purr like a kitten. Gets 15-17 MPG in the city, and never lacks for power, something I might add the explorer does, even with the V-8. Might have tried a Tahoe, but the extra $10,000 for the options I got seemed a little steep.

Also last week the tilt wheel hand switch that you push down to tilt the steering wheel broke off in my hand while I was tilting the wheel. Another first. It was a cheesy plastic thing internally which should have ben made out of metal if you use your tilt wheel more than twice a day which I do. Taking it back under warranty tomorrow to fix, even though I shouldn't have to for these small things.

I'm very happy with my Durango. I have a 2001 SLT 4WD. LOADED! I love the power and the new interior design. I don't care for the 2WD body style that is why I chose to get the beefier front end on the 4WD. I've had no major problems. In fact the only problem that I do have is with the power door locks. While the engine is running the locks will occasionally begin rapidly locking and unlocking on their own.

Fun to drive if it holds up...

I have loved looking at and driving Dodge Durango since they came out. I purchased a 2001 model and have had it in the shop constantly for warranty work.

In 11 months I put 40,000 km on this vehicle. It has performed well however there have been and are certain issues I believe need to be aired. First after only 3 months of ownership the computer chip for the fuel pump died. There were no chips in Canada so I had to wait for a whole week. The light switch broke off after 10 months.( The one you pull to engage the fog lamps.) Now I'm trying to get Dodge to look at the breaks. When the breaks are applied with consistant and sudden pressure the brakes release after a fews seconds. This is especially noticable when you hit a bump and apply the breaks.

Be Careful

I bought the Durango in February 2001 and traded it in September 2001. I got a horrible vehicle that was in the shop from June until August 2001 with A/C problems and then was not fixed correctly still! I don't know if it was the dealership or the vehicle, but my advice for $30,000 sticker price go buy a Tahoe or an Explorer and you will get better gas mileage and the insurance will not be as high! Good luck if you have one!

You feel every bump in the road. This vehicle for some reason came with front disc brake, no rear brakes. Terrible if you drive in stop and go traffic. I feel I've been taking ripped off when I traded in my 97 Durango thinking I would get a more luxurious model with leather seats, Infinity surround speakers. But instead, I got this vehicle for 2 and a half more years.

I bought my Dodge Durange 11 months ago, and have been extremely happy with its performance. The ride is quite smooth, and it is has lots of power. The power and heated front seats are very comfortable, and the sound system is outstanding. We have pulled a boat and trailer with six people and had no problem towing. We have also found it to get better gas mileage than expected -- traveling down a highway at 65 mph it will get between 18 and 22 mph.

Great so far

I've had mine for just over a year now. 22k miles without any problems. Took it offroad in the snow and had a blast! Moved last year and loaded this thing down quite a bit, but it performed great. I love it and am looking forward to many more years of service from it.

We use this vehicle for everything and love it in every situation. It's my daily driver for commuting to/from work, we tow the boat with it, camp with it and use it for outings with family and friends.
