This is a one-owner car with a manual transmission and regular and prompt servicing for its lifetime. A wonderful car. Great handling, power (and it's a 4-cylinder) engine. Driven regularly in the Rocky Mountains.

My first - and last - VW!

This car is junk! I purchased in 2009 with 65K for 8.5K. The car now has 95K - that's right , folks - only 95K - with original transmission/engine, by the way - and I've spent nearly 7K - in repairs and maintenance. A few weeks ago, I was told the right cat converters have to replaced (another 2K down the drain! The left ones were replaced - just six months ago so this car could pass emissions testing) but I've got car registered through 2017 so I'll put up with the annoying alarm reminder sound on the dashboard ("Emissions Workshop"/Check Engine Light), dragging my feet kicking and screaming before I actually get this repair done. I'll NEVER EVER BUY ANOTHER VW. Kudos to those owners who've got a great VW - but mine is a MONEY-SUCKING PIECE OF LEMON TURD!! Prevent your migraines...Save your 40(1)K...GET A HONDA, A NISSAN OR A TOYOTA!! I will state the car actually drives beautifully, like a Beamer or a Mercedes - but it has the maintenance and temperament of an angry, grumpy, arthritic Yugo!! Update 6/8/16: My car's alignment was bad due to broken control arms and bushings - which I paid 1.7K - last week. I just got a phone call from the alignment shop: After completion of the alignment (or rather, re-alignment), the technician took my car for a test drive - and the left turn signal tail light FELL OFF. Are you kidding me??!! I have plenty enough to do on a daily basis - now I have to find ASAP a junkyard to replace the broken tail light - so I don't get a ticket from the police - and - I have to buy four new tires (another 500-plus bucks down the drain!) because the alignment wore the tires down, which, of course, tire warranty isn't applicable to this situation. The shop also said in the next few months something about the belt needs to be placed. I'm a lady - I have no idea what this "belt" thing this is all about. As the shop guy was talking in my ear all I heard was the sound of the cash register opening and closing...opening and closing...opening closing...which is code for: I have to write - another blank check - for another repair. The reason why I purchased this car was to have a device installed the passenger side for transferring my wheelchair-bound mother into the passenger seat. This device is powered by the car battery. (Google "Milford Lift". The product is from Pride Mobility). At the time of my car's purchase, I didn't want to pay nearly 18K for a used Toyota or Honda wheelchair van to take my mother out just once or twice a week - however, with the amount of repairs I've spent to date, add in the cat converter repair I have to do next year before my car is eligible for registration tags - I SHOULD'VE PURCHASED the Toyota or Honda wheelchair van because I can easily resell it without losing a lot of my purchase price as these brand names are always in solid, high demand due to their historic top quality and reliability. I'm afraid my car's transmission will go out in the next six months! If this happens - my head will explode! And I will take a hammer to this car!! It's been my worst nightmare!! Every time I walk past the car in my garage, I swear - it chuckles and farts at me because it knows it's been causing me such a headache!! This car is the elephant in the room that will never ever go away on it's own! Stay. Away. From. VW. Period!!

I bought my 2000 Passat wagon used, in 2008, now in 2015, 166000 miles. I am still loving this car. It is fully loaded, heated seats, automatic mirror adjustments. Climatron system is great, also the monsoon sound system is amazing. Its a great 'soccer mom' car, love the hatchback, which makes it easy to open and throw in backpacks, sporting stuff as well as groceries, and back seats fold down easily, if transporting something long. I am a small woman, and the car is very comforable, back seats are like your living room sofa. I haven't had many problems with it and I drive it all the time.l The one issue is, the car is sort of low and you have to watch going over speed bumps and such. I have had to fix the mufflers a few times but other than that, it been fine, and I love the smooth driving nature of this car. I would get another one, but this one is still going strong, and also, it a great looking car, very classy looking and still looks great even for 15 years old.

It is a great car for everyday use. I have mine for 6 years and I drove around 55K miles and it runs like a champ. These V6 engines are strong and hard to kill. The only thing I changed besides suspension, is timing ( which is normal every car, so is the oil), gaskets, thermostat, and water pump. Yes these are expensive parts, if you buy original like you should. I am a mechanic so every part I buy, I change it myself. This car is great for hauling cargo inside. So if you're looking for a first car and know something about how change little things and have budget limit to 5K, I suggest you get this car. Now it depends on a person, if you're planning on modifying like boosting, get a 1.8T, if not and want to have the car as a daily drive, get a V6. Why a V6 for a daily drive, because turbos are very expensive to replace, and you never know what the car went through with previous owner. You may also ask how is the mpg, well it's not perfect. After I changed the fuel pump and the filter, I started getting 13-15 in city, and 25-30 on highway at steady 60-70 mph, on premium 93 (recommended)

I've had a lot of used cars and this one tops the replacements I have had to put in it. The sludge build up required motor and everything connected to the motor to be replaced (hoses, belts, etc). I also had cracked pipes. And, to top it off I now have the ABS module gone bad. I have a 99 Taurus that I've only spent 1000 on so far. This car, I've spent over 5000, and , I haven't replaced the module yet!

I baught this car a year ago with 202k i have put a VERY hard 11k on her i mean racing hard i have owend many cars and none of them could handle me till i got this V6 5s manual passat for 1750 the only issue it has is the ABS system but it doesnt effect what im after. this car seriously exceeds 140 with over 213k... on the track of course! And the only mods on it is a comp chip to over ride the govern, and muffler delete so it sounds like a racer! this car is a great comfortable family car on the road and an absolute beast on the track it is without a doubt the best 1750 i ever spent! Update, at 215k miles the ABS fault caused the front driver side wheel to lock up on the freeway when applying the brakes spinning the car into the freeway divider. This issue should have been a recall as comon as it was for these years. I was able to drive the car home but the frame was bent and it was no longer safe for family. I sold it for $500 and it is back on the road still racking up miles for the guy that baught it. I miss it but would not buy another without upgraded ABS system. overall my passat experience was good. Just be aware of ABS

Overall, this has been an excellent vehicle. To me the most impressive aspect of the car is how it drives so well in snow & rain. I did have a few issues with the front end suspension around the 135,000 mile mark, but they have not come back since. Fuel economy has been as advertised averaging around 23 highway & 17 city. The exterior fit & finish is relatively decent, and the interior is so well built, it still looks almost like new. I've never driven anything but VWs. (I also have an 04 Passat Sedan). Keep in mind, VW is not like Honda/Toyota, VWs require a little more work, but will easily surpass the 500,000 mile mark. As long as you take care of a VW, it will take care of you.

this vehicle ran great first 80k miles. But the window fell out & a bunch of interior things broke while still considered a newer car. I read all the reviews on car. I got the car from friend knowing she was about to run into trouble with it. It was in good to fair condition. I bought it with another friend at a good price knowing we would be dumping a lot of $$$$ into it over the next few years who I knew could tackle the problems ahead. What I wasn't prepared for was everything happening at once AND PROBLEMS WITH the rack and pinion. I hope I spelled that right. If you are looking to buy a Passat 2000-2004 do a Vin history on it. If you're looking for a smart buy, this ain't it!

Why I will never buy another VW. Replaced control arms twice in 80,000 miles. Bad ABS module, bad CCM, bad ECU, all oxygen sensors have been replaced, engine sludge problem, two bad window regulators, Emissions Workshop Errors all the time. Every two winters battery needs to be replaced. Took it to dealer for a check engine and was told I had 2 bad catalytic converters, $2,300. Had it scanned somewhere else and was told that it does have a catalytic error, but the dealer failed to mention several vacuum leak errors. I replaced $20 worth of vac hose, problem solved. Haven't had an error in 10,000 miles, this is a record!! Replacing the above parts with non OEM has helped a lot.

My vehicle currently has over 100,000 miles. Initial impressions during the first 25000 miles were very positive. The car handled decently, the ride was firm, the V6 engine had smooth power. Gas mileage has been constant at an OK 22 combined city/highway. Subsequent impressions were not as good due to overall reliability problems. I could cut and paste the problems mentioned in other reviews/forums, such as leaking cylinder head gaskets, leaking cam seals, tie rod replacement, new ABS module, control arm joints, and a host of various other problems. Repair bills over the years were exorbitant, much of which was due to the high cost of replacement parts.

An experience.

Liked the car for the ability to transport 2 German Shepherds and humans comfortably. Plenty of room and very comfortable with the heated leather seats and pretty good gas mileage. The steering was pleasantly weighted and got heavier the faster the vehicle moved, giving a feeling of solidity and feeling well planted and secure. Cruised well. Unfortunately after a mere 8000 miles of ownership, the engine compartment combusted today necessitating a 911 call to extinguish the flames.

Probably the worst car ever!! Will never ever buy a VW again. It had low miles but already had transmission, engine problems. oil and power steering fluid were leaking. car had smoke coming out of the engine. wobbled while driving on the highway and drank gas as if i was driving a 14 cylinder car. i must have read almost every review about this car and saw that almost every car has a least 89-100 thousand miles on it.i should have never bought this junk. I bought my Passat wagon used, with about 42K miles on it, as the second owner. It was fun to drive, handled well, and was a pleasure to own for nearly 8 years. For 3 years I drove it on a 140mi commute (RT). It also made several long-distance (1000+ miles RT) road trips every year with no problems. Overall, it was extremely reliable. They had to adjust the mass air sensor the first week I had it. Other than regularly scheduled maintenance, there weren't any issues for 5 years of moderate to very heavy driving. I had to have the head gaskets replaced on the engine at about 130K miles. The ABS braking chip needed replacing at about 150K miles.

I forget how many times this lemon of a car has gone into the shop. Bought used from some person who much be must happier now. "Emissions workshop" several times . Water pump dead at 35k. Heater doesn't work. New head gasket required at 70k. Coolant leak. Radio died. Rear seat cupholder broken. Thousands of dollars in repairs that simply should not be required in the first 5 years of a cards life. Great car to drive but wouldn't want to own one.

I bought my manual trans V6 Passat almost 10 years ago and have to say it's been a great car overall. There have been few unexpected repairs but the repairs I have had to make have been expensive. The car has a peppy V6 engine that gets great gas mileage (low 30's on the highway). My wife describes my Passat as "smooth in every aspect". I've been happy with the quality of the engine and body. The interior controls have a quality feel but many of the buttons, knobs and cupholders have failed or begun to become unreliable. Overall the positives of the vehicle far out way it's issues and I hope to drive my Passat for many more miles!

Don't get me wrong here... VW's are excellent cars when they are running 100%. The problem is 99% of the time they are not running properly. Case in point here is my 2000 Passat 1.8T. After 5 years of ownership, I drowned thousands of dollars into repairs. Blown turbo, oil cooler cracked, brakes went soft early on too. The list goes on and on. Sludge had built up in the engine and finally, after 83k miles, the heater core broke. I will NEVER buy a VW again. This is the worst car I've ever dealt with and I don't know why I kept it for so long.

Right off the bat I'm going to just say in spite of many of the positives in this car, I would avoid it just because of the ridiculous prices VW charges for parts. Found my passat used with 69k on it, now at 120k. I have honestly spent less money repairing this than the Civics I have owned in the past. It hasn't been as reliable as a honda because I have had issues with power steering lines and electrical problems which made the car undriveable. I also always was someone who worked on my own car and this Passat has been a nightmare in that regard (every bolt on the car is a different type and different size and needs a different tool. its insane how many tools you need just to remove one par

I don't know what happenned with the other people getting bad gas mileage because I get up to 54mpg on the highway which makes this car good for my long commute. I love my Passat, and I've never had to make any major repairs. This car is very quick and very durable. I pull away from Corvettes and Mustangs all the time. I've driven Volkswagens since 1985, and thanks to this car, I'll continue that trend(unless I buy an Audi, hehe)

I have driven this car for 6 months and have already replaced the alternator, driver's side axle, pedal sensor, o2 sensor, and now hopefully only a piece of flex pipe behind the catalytic converter and not the entire stretch of exhaust including the converter. The locks pop up and down when they please, the alarm doesn't work properly, the cup holders stink, and is like maneuvering a plastic toboggan when it's snows. I love the way it handles and accelerates, it's very comfortable, but it's much too costly to maintain. I should have kept my Camry. Oh, and premium fuel only. have fun w/ $40 plus fill ups. oh, and wait until your epc light comes on while you're on the highway! have fun!

I have had the same experience with the O2 sensors mentioned by others, however I had it replaced once and have just ignored subsequent O2 communication and it goes away. The car is a joy to drive and the AWD was solid in the 2008 snowfall. I also have a private mechanic and have avoided VW dealers due to their nightmarish, weak customer relations I hear about constantly. Overall I have been very happy with my GLX. Excellent power, handling and ride. At the time I bought the VW I had also driven an Audi A6 Quattro and opted for the VW. I will go VW again....

I reviewed my Passat in Oct '04. I loved my car & was incredibly sad when I was finally forced to trade her @ 110K miles. I wanted to drive her to 250K! Smooth ride, quick acceleration, excellent braking, tight turning radius, style-a beautiful combination of performance & design. The exterior & interior still looked nearly new. Truly a well built car. So why did I trade such a wonderful car? Your can't license a vehicle in St. Louis with Check Engine Light codes. The dealer was unable to correct the emissions issue for 2 years. Additional repairs would START at $4000 (pre-cats, gas tank & lines). VW refused to help though some issues were under recall! VW lost a loyal customer!

I bought this in late 1999 and it was just right. I didn't mind the 91 octane as I got 35-36 mph all the time. Did a lot of long distance interstate driving and have over 130,000 miles on it now. Have always done dealer service and only one bad experience and never went back to that dealer on Provo Utah. Had to replace a control arm and tires as a result. But other than that, it is a dream. Wish I could still buy a 1.8 5 speed turbo in the future. Somewhere out there around 225,000 miles I suspect.

I bought this car over 2 years ago and have found nothing but problems! The heater core valve, the shifter broke, brakes, recalls, and many other problems. The knob for my mirror fell off, the power locks no longer work correctly. Every time I have needed to get something fixed, it has cost me over $1,000. Future VW buyers, BEWARE! Tried to start my car this a.m. and it won't even turn over now! This car (since I have owned it) has been well maintained, all oil changes, tune ups etc, and this car still won't run properly. After reading all of these reviews, I am EXTREMELY worried about what the current problem is. I can't wait to get rid of this money pit!

This was my first VW and will likely not be my last. Since buying my car new in 2000 and putting just about 135,000 miles on it, I have had no major issues with it at all. Yes, repairs are a bit costly, but with regular maintenance, my car has been pretty much problem-free. I intend to hold onto this car for a while simply because it's such a solid, well-built car.

I have had my VW GLX 4-motion for almost two years now. All I can say is this car has been there for me I have owned mostly trucks and SUV's but I'm very impressed with my VW purchase,I bought it with 80,000 miles on it and now has 111,000 miles and no problems. A good tip for those looking at VWs is to stay away from the 1.8 turbo they seem to be nothing but trouble. If you have a check engine light take it to auto zone first and get a free diagnostic test done this can save you a ton of money. You can also save money by buying parts online and taking it to a good independent mechanic they can do most hardware repairs but not so much computer repairs.

I love my car. Have no doubts about this car, this is an Audi A4 with VW badging. All repair parts are completely interchangeable with an A4 of the same year. Passats are built in Germany so you know they are built correctly, not like the Jetta's which are built in Mexico. You cannot go wrong with this car. Note for the consumer though, look for the 2.8L V6. The VW turbo's have been known to need replacement after 100k km.

I have only 81,000 miles so far and gone through both external and internal CV boots. The worse part about maintaining this vehicle is the recommended replacement of the timing belt at 90,000 miles which will cost over $1000.00. If I had know this before I purchased it I would be driving another car. Better engineering is sorely needed if just for this one part. Be careful when you need new brakes being sure you get the ones designed for VW hat has the wear sensor. Otherwise the "Replace pads" light will come on.

We purchased new in 2000. Interior quality and excellent handling were the two major selling points. Despite some concerns regarding VW quality, this car has been reliable and virtually problem-free. The one major mechanical issue was an oil seal failure back in 2005, which was covered by VW even though the car was out of warranty; it pays to keep all of your service records! Biggest beef has been the need to use premium fuel, but otherwise this has proven to be a great family car that offers European handling and performance at a reasonable price.

I've had my Passat for over 8 years, have nearly 100,000 miles on it, and have almost nothing but good things to say about it. No ball joint replacement (apparently a common problem), no clutch problems, no major problems of any kind really. Minor problems have included emissions and radiator leak. Nothing else but standard maintenance (oil, tires, brakes). My only complaint is the difficulty in getting to the oil filter to change the oil. It requires that the front facia be unbolted, and several screws have broken off in doing this. Otherwise, I'm very happy with my car, and will consider VW again in the future.

I loved this car when I bought it. But, when the repairs started, they never stopped. It spends most of the time these days in the shop. The repairs over the past year include $900 turbo, $500 timing belt, $650 coolant feed line (dealer), $600 struts and many other $200+ repairs. I can't even sell it because of other repairs that need to be made to it. It's a piece of junk. I wish it wasn't because I really liked this car. I will never buy another VW. Never.

Don't waste your money, the dealers charge to turn them off, and they will be back on in weeks. Don't replace your O2 sensors either. Thay are too expensive and the computer will default the sensor anyway. I have had wheel bearings, radiator, tie rods, cv joints, vacume lines, and the list goes on. Over $7500 in 6 years not including brakes timing belt and tune ups. VW you have lost my business. This car is a money pit.

I shopped for two years before buying an '00 Passat GLX 5M. I seriously considered the Audi A4, Ford Bronco, Saab 9-3, Olds Alero, and BMW 3-Series among others. This car has some very nice features. I liked the way it drove, I feel safe in it, and I get many nice comments from passengers. However, non-warranty repairs have included MAF (2.5 yrs) for ~$500, control arm (3 yrs) ~$300, 3 rear brakes, rear window motor (5 yrs) ~$250, serpentine belt & powwr steering motor (5 yrs) ~$800, drill out license plate mount from trunk lid (6 yrs) ~$100, rear view mirror (6 yrs) ~$0 (but frustrating get done), belly pan (7 yrs) ~$250, & others that I can't think of right now. If the dealer/repair experience had been better, and if repair costs weren't so high, I'd probably stay with VW/Audi.

First off, emissions workshop showed up during our warranty, but Volkswagen jerked us around, and we have paid at least $2,500 in three separate attempts to unsuccessfully repair the emissions issues. Now it also has ABS brake problems and both of the front windows don't work. The cup holders are jammed/broken, the rubber handles are peeling, both front turn signal lights broke off, the side-mirror control broke off. I swear integral parts to this car are made of brittle plastic. You are forced to pay a premium for synthetic oil and premium gasoline. I thought VWs were great cars but I was thinking of the VWs in the 80s. It does drive pretty well, but I am worried about making inspection AGAIN.

Two weeks after we bought the car, we were smelling oil. It took the dealer two weeks to fix all the leaks, they had to redo the top half of the motor. We later found out it was the second time these repairs were made in 40,000 miles - luckily all under warranty. It needed a new air sensor, two new air pumps, new a/c hoses, and new rotors. Both the front blinker assemblies fell out while driving the car (within eight months of each other). The parts man at the VW dealer said this happens frequently. All of these problems in 50,000 miles. Now it needs over $1,000 in preventative maintenance. What do you think?

The check engine / emissions light came on within months of the purchase (new) and hasn't been off for more than two weeks since then...and I've owned the car for five years now. I have put about $7,000 into repairs for this car and still it leaks coolant and can't get the emissions light off. The plastic panel parts were cracked and ugly within months for no reason, the adhesive for the fabric around the windows melted in the AZ heat within two summers, and the plastic peels around the handles and looks really bad. This is with EXCELLENT care and maintenance / hand washing. I won't buy a VW again! And, I don't recommend VW to anyone else, either!

I bought my Passat as a VW Certified Pre-Owned Car. It's been a good purchase so far. If I had driven 12,000 rather than 15,000 miles each year the car would have held its value better, but I can still sell it for more than I owe. The fuel economy of this car'sV6 engine has been fairly good. I got 29 to 30 mpg on my last road trip from Seattle to Los Angeles. The best part is you can use 87 grade (regular gas) and it won't ping. I don't even notice the performance difference. The CD changer has been replaced once and is going through errors again. I would recommend an aftermarket CD player, except VW does diagnostics through the factory tape player so if you ever need maintance, you'd have to put the stock radio back in.

What can I say about a car that was built during the Octoberfest? This car is a MONEYPIT. I researched many hours to endup with something that I have rebuilt. It has a new water pump, three new sensors, new ball joints, and a new radiator. We also have replaced three oil pan covers due to their cheap plastic. It aloways needs new tires and alignment. Now it has a short in the ABS sensor that will cost $1,300 to replace and the clutch is slipping. Oops one of the electric mirror knobs broke off. How can you drive without adjusting the mirrors? What else can I say? It's time for another Japanese car. My patience is lost and no one gives a DARN. The dealers just take my money. I have had it! I am afraid of VWs. I've had my Passat for 2 months and 2,000 miles. I love the combination of performance, quiet, comfort, distinctive look, gas mileage (26 combined), Monsoon stereo, luxury and great fun factor (5 speed manual). This car is smallish on the outside but roomy inside - a perfect combination of bigness while not being big. This contributes to a true sport sedan look and feel. The 6 year old finish looks like new. The V6 is so quiet I often have to watch the tach to know when to shift. The interior is superb - real wood trim, comfortable seats, plenty of room for four adults plus spacious trunk. It has lots of nice touches, like hold the key in unlock position and the windows open! All my friends love it, and I can't get enough of my heated seats and sunroof. Before I knew this car, I didn't like VWs, since the Beetle had always annoyed me. Now I am a new VW fan and love my car! The only thing I need to get used to is the low gas mileage (my old car got about 38 mpg). This car is fun to drive and the 4WD makes me feel safe. This car is a still a head turner and gets parked in the front with BMWs and Mercedes at valet. The Tiptonic transmission makes this car take off like a rocket. The 2000 Volkswagen Passat has been a great car. I drive about 40,000 miles a year and this car has never failed me. I have owned my 2000 Volkswagen Passat since it was new and in general enjoy its speed and agility. The Monsoon system is unparalled for a factory system. I've now got 82,000 miles on it and its the biggest pile of garbage in existence. While the engine runs well, it mysteriously uses one quart of oil every 800 miles. VW thinks this is acceptable! The Volkswagen Passat is really fun to drive, however VW makes sure that to keep any of their cars on the road you have to spend a ton of money. In the last two years I've had four oxygen sensors replaced and had to pay for three of them. VW insists that this is not abnormal and would not pay for the expense (~$450 each time). I've found that VWs are either really good or really bad from car to car, good luck with this one...I miss my '89 Jetta.

I have owned my Passat since it was new. It has always had regular service performed by the dealer. I have had a slew of problems since the car was three years old (it's a 2000). First, the driver's seat heater went out. The dealer wanted $1,400 to fix it. I needed an entirely new seat - apparently they can't take element out. At 86,000 miles, the check emissions light came on. I needed two new catalytic converters. What kind of car needs two, pray tell? That set me back close to $5,000 for the way overpriced parts. Then little things happened, the Tiptronic won't upshift, for example. The Tiptronic transmission alone cost $1,400 to fix. Then most recently, the passenger window came off its track - $400. I need a tranny flush - $485. In three years, I spent over $9,000 in repairs.

Passat is not overly reliable.

I decided to purchase the Passat after owning Toyotas and Hondas because it was a sexier car then the 2000 Camry. However, the reliability has been worse then I expected. The cup holders quickly broke, the driver side door latch mechanism totally fell apart, requiring $300 plus in repairs. The VW dealer mechanics continually screw up working on the car. The seat fabric is the most amazing lint brush you ever saw, tightly holding on to every bit of lint and dirt, and some of the interior door handle and dash pieces are covered with thin rubber that has been peeling off and looks terrible. I won't buy another VW.

I am writing because so many people have written about the emissions workshop light. This happened to me as well. The dealer said that there was a recall on it and simply reset the computer no charge. The dealer has been OK but they are out for every dime they can get. The interior door handles' plastic is flanking and the steering wheel is worn as well. As many have mentioned the cup holders leave something to be desired. On the highway this car is great. The Passat is fun to drive, powerful, and it looks good, but I have had so many problems with the car. I bought it as a certified used vehicle but still I am having a lot of problems in the first two months that I have owned the car. The certified program of VW is a scam. Don't believe it. Get it checked by another mechanic. Make sure you know all the 112 points of (so called) inspection when you go to buy this car and ask for every one of them. It is your right. And it will make sure the dealer you are talking to actually did the work to certify the car. Mine did not.

We have owned our 2000 Passat Wagon with the 1.8T since new. Over the 6 years we have owned it, we have been very pleased. We had a minor problem with the aux. air pump and the MAF sensor, but VW replaced them for no charge. Also, the water pump became noisy about 1,000 miles ago and they replaced it also for no charge. Other than these minor problems, the car has been fantastic. I have recommended it to friends and relatives, and they have also had great success. So, don't listen to all these negative reviews. This is a roomy, comfortable, fuel efficient, fun car. Buy one!

The brake & gas peddles are too small and too close. Lots of problems with these cars. Poor choice of materials. The interior scratches real easy. Lots of mechanical parts made out of cheap plastic (power widow braces) that are expensive to replace. Watch out for tie rods, control arms, mass air flow sensors, timing belts, and engine sludge. All very common problems. Expect at least $1,000/year in repairs.

I loved this car. Told everyone to get one. Some did. Now I feel bad because it is a NIGHTMARE to have repaired. I feel like I am playing chance. Maybe they will find the problem, maybe they won't. There is always a HUGE labor bill and a car returned to me that still smells and misfires. There is a FEAR about taking the car to a non dealer, yet I feel that the dealer service is equally befuddled by the prolific problems with this car. Have a Sienna with 125k mi that has never needed anything except routine service. So far Passat - O 2 sensor, valve cover gaskets, check engine problems, pervasive oil leaks, broken seat, lame bumper, door sensor broke which triggered fuel pump/spark plug prob

This has been a great car to own. Mine was made in Germany, had had no problems until this year (2005) when I ran into the EMISSIONS WORKSHOP problem others have. Dealer wants $3000 to 5000 to fix it. BUT WAIT - my excellent mechanic has assured me that this is a well known design flaw (O2 sensors too close to catalytic converters), and that by moving them around (a couple hundred bucks), the problem goes away. You can also ignore the engine light until it is time to pass smog tests. ALSO, the Volkswagen dealership is just about the least customer friendly place I have ever dealth with - their focus is entirely on revenue, and they could care less what you think about them.

I love driving this car. It handles well and is the perfect size for me. But...I it's been pretty high maintenance. So far the fuel injectors have been replaced while still under warranty (whew!). The front brakes have been replaced and the most recent and most expensive repair was for the driver's seat heater which burned out.

At 65k miles I still think the Passat is a great car. I bought it as a family car and what sold me was the solid quality feel, excellent crash ratings, well designed little luxury features (eg. one-touch up and down front windows, one-touch rotary dial sunroof control). Many Audi features at a VW price. Sufficient power to blast along at 80+ with full load, yet decent gas mileage (low 20s around the burbs, 30 cruising @ 65, 27 cruising @80 with a full load). Fairly reliable – problems have been: dead rear washer, dead rear speaker(s), faulty temp gauge sender, oil leak at valve timing chain cover (common prob); all were fixed under warranty although the rear speakers are now all dead.

VW uses very low quality materials. Interior peices wear very fast (especially door handle coatings). Check engine light is always on. Tie rods and control arms, oil system, sensors, vacuum hoses are major problems you will likely encounter with this car.

While a fun car to drive - when something goes wrong - watch out. The repair bills are extremely high. Normal charges for ordinary upkeep are also higher than lets say a Toyota Camary. Check recalls - we have had two. Change your oil!!! We did not change it every 5,000 miles and they voided our warranty on a repair that cost us $1,100 with 60,000 miles on the car. So far with 103,000 miles on this car, that my wife calls "the baby" we have spent over $4,000 on repairs never mind the normal stuff. An expensive kid indeed, never mind the premium fuel required.

I thought we had found the perfect car. The clean lines, nearly perfect ergonomics, elegant interior and great road manners made me forget that I was driving a station wagon. Unfortunately, the car was bedeviled by endless quality problems that had us endlessly returning to the shop over and over. On 3 different occasions, it blew major engine or transmission seals with catastropic results. The electrical system shorted repeatedly and countless other little things went wrong. Thank God we had an extended warranty.

Do not buy one of these cars. I have had 4 oil leaks fixed, all under warranty. 2 air sensors replaced - one under warranty the other on me ($400) and a air injection pump ($650). All of that between 37k and 61k. I wear a size 14 shoe and my foot rubs the brake pedal when it is on the accelerator. A very poorly made engine, I have heard the V6 is better. Also the transmission has slipped twice on me in the mountains. The value has fallen so fast that I am upside down in my loan 1.5 years into it. Can't imagine selling it so someone, so I'm going to have to eat about 3k on a trade in.

We purchased our Passat wagon in May of '02 and when we hit about 50,000 miles we had nothing but trouble. The ABS module went ($1050 part) the oil pump went due to sludge from the turbo engine which also caused other problems...another huge expense. Neither the dealer nor VW of America would assist us in resolving the issues with this vehicle. They have the worst consumer service I have encountered. Since getting these repairs I have learned that these vehicles have many more problems and that there have been numerous complaints made and VW still will not put a recall out for these makes and correct the major electrical flaw. I will never purchase a VW again!

Do not buy this car. 1998-2002 VW Passats and Audis with the 1.8T engine are doomed for failure. There is a HUGE issue with oil sludging. My engine seized on the highway. They claimed a timing belt, but the cause was oil sludge. They would only replace the engine IF I had all oil change reciepts (I did the oil changes, but I didn't have reciepts.) I had all but 5, they wouldn't do anything. A great car to drive, but that can't compensate for a $4000 rebuild.

I have loved my 2000 Passat since I purchased it in the summer of 2002! Friends comment what a beautiful car, both inside and out, my Passat GLX 4 Motion Wagon is. The car loves to drive fast and even at high speeds the ride is smooth and quiet. I did buy the car used with 29K miles and purchased an extended warranty. I've used it to replace the tie rod ends ($500 repair) at appx 55K miles. The rear wiper works but the washer has never worked...oh, well. My youngest stepped on the rear cupholder and broke it...wasn't really functional anyway...besides I prefer the no eating/no drinking in the car!

Had this car 1year and have $7000 in repairs to date. Started having problems at 55,000 miles-engine ran poorly(stalled, chugged). As a result, I've had to replace the O2 sensor, mass air flow sensor, blower hose, and at 68000miles the timing belt went. I now need a whole new motor, even though VW does not recommend replacing timing belt until 105,000miles!!! Followed recommended maintenance schedule and still had all these problems. When I called VW to complain, their response was "out of warranty, sorry". I would not recommed this car to anybody, and will unload is as soon as I get my new engine!!! One more thing - NOBODY can seem to work

From day one we've loved this car, we still love it. BUT, the headgasket blew at 30,000 and the steering rack went at 36,000 - the latter, not under warranty. The dealer agreed to split the cost - $2000. For a car with so few miles on it, these are two MAJOR things to have go wrong. I want to love VWs, but we're going back to what we've always had good luck with: Hondas, Toyotas and Nissans.

My 2000 Passat is the most enjoyable car I've ever owned. Great handling combined with true comfort. The Audi V6 coupled with the Tiptronic transmission is a true performer. The car loves the highway, but economy suffers considerably with town driving. I've had a couple of maintenance problems, but not anything serious. I bought my car in Mexico, where I live, and my only real complaint is that agencies in the U.S. can not service it. Nor can they service Passats from Canada. This is a real black eye for Volkswagen as I am hesitant to drive in the U.S., which I occasionally like to do.

My wife really wanted this car, a luxury sports sedan. For the first 20K miles, all was well. Then it was old all of a sudden. The warranty ends @ 24K so bizzarre repairs I have never seen happen at these mileages are our responsibility. I note the other reviewers either love or hate these cars. I second what sounds like a weird theory - ours was built in October, and I think that may explain it. Another important note - the nice curvy sheet metal on these cars is paper thin, and it dents incredibly easily. A slow moving shopping cart can cause 2k worth of damage!

The Passat GLX is an excellent automobile and mine has given me great service. It is a pleasure to drive under all circumstances. Where I live, the roads are not the greatest, with cobblestone streets in my town. This has resulted in some wrattles in the car which I probably would not have otherwise. It was good to drive within the 2 year warranty. The trouble appeared immediately after the expiration of the warranty, firstly the engine check light without any warning, then is the secondary air pump started to make noise every time I start my cold. It became worse over the time. Recently the vaccum hose was broken and I have to tow the car to the dealership. Do not mention I have took vacation off. I purchased the car used and for the first week was very happy. During the second week of ownership the check engine light came on and the emissions workshop indicator. After repeated visits to the dealer, the problem was unidentifiable. They replaced the MAF sensor and did other work. Fortunately the car was under warranty. However, a week later the check engine light went on again. After driving the car for a couple hundred miles the light went off again. Ever since then the light comes on and goes off whenever it wants. The car is not worth it. At the first opportunity I plan on dumping the car after 6 months.

In comparison to my former car, (2001 Pontiac Grand Prix), it is a hands down favorite although i do miss the raw horsepower, when cruising at 80 mph i don't know the difference with the exception that i am getting a smoother and better handeling ride. I would advise everyone reading this to go out and test drive one today.

For 3 years, the Passat performed admirably, best car I'd had. Loved it 6 months ago, mechanical problems developed, valve and gaskets, replaced heater core,2 temperature sensors, clutch, rear brakes, coolant system, engine mount, tie rods, 4 tires,(3rd set of tires)hoses, and much more. My car has been in the garage for a month now, and it cannot be fixed by them or the 2 super expert techs who go to dealerships to deal with difficult problems. What to do?

We like our Passat, the only exceptions are maintenance costs inc. engine timing belt replacement is recomended at 65k at a cost of around $600.00 Yikes! Why should the owner have to pay such a big price for this shortlived engine item? If you don't get this done as maintenance it could cost you a fatal engine breakdown.

Excellent car, I'm now a VW owner for life. Only problem was a bad mass airflow sensor, which is pretty common on these cars, good thing i got a warantee. the new sensor is almost $400! Would reccomend this car to anyone, the ride is as good as any audi ive been in, exceptionally smooth and quiet.

I have had nothing but problems w/ my 2000 V6 Passat. After a year of driving I had on and off Emission problems for a year...numerous O2 sensors replaced and finally the coil wire and a recall put an end to those. In total about 6 trips to the dealer for the repairs over a years time. This fall w/ 36K miles my timing belt and water pump fail resulting in a complete engine rebuild which took my dealer Dorschel VW of Rochester, NY 5 weeks to repair. Now 3 months later I have a coolant leak requiring the engine to be taken apart again to be diagnosed.

I loved this car for about the first 15K, and then the car started falling apart. I have 60K on it now, and I have already replaced all 4 air sensors and the catalytic converter. The interior lights go out sometimes and then randomly come back on. This car has been to the dealer on 11 occasions for the check engine light, and then they tell me nothing appears to be wrong. The VW customer service people are worthless, the service centers are full of idiots, and the car is completely unreliable. I do not enjoy paying $30K for a car only to be treated like a complete pee on. This is my first and last VW.

This has been a great car for the most part of 50k miles. I have just had many little things fail that had to be resolved. As I was driving it home on the day I bought it, the check engine light came on. Took it back the next day for service, didn't see it for a week. New car smell was gone :( After that I had minor things like vanity mirror light go out, the rear door handle sticking, rear window not rolling down, and a starter. The lastest thing is my alarm system not beeping right, due to battery replacement by the dealer. I am proud to speak of German engineering despite its flaws.

I purchased my Passat with slightly less than 60000 miles. I have had it for a half a year with only one problem. The ignition coils needed to be replaced. It is a V6 and I thought only the 1.8T had problems with this. The only other problem I have had is keeping my girlfriend from borrowing it. This is a great car for someone who wants to step up from a boring Camry or Accord.

I had my Passat for 2 years and still love it! It handles well and has lots of room in the backseat and trunk area. I am a design student and have the need to carry a great deal of projects. Not a problem with the seats folded down! The only two issues that I have with the car is that I had to replace a tire on the car to the tune of $450.00. Just one tire! Also, if I had it to do over again, I would have spent the extra $2K and purchased the V6. The 4 cylinder is not responsive unless you're at higher speeds and the turbo kicks in.

I got this vehicle used, so part of the problem may be that the seller did'nt tell me anything. However, since I have had the vehicle, there have just been way too many repairs (tunk release, water leaks in the trunk, dead engine, unalighned frame, short circuited cd player). Anyway, I've had to pay for all of this because the car was out of warranty. While these arent the only problems, VW service is horrible. Ive come to them several times with problems, and they charge me but cant answer them, or fix something the wrong way, leading me to seak help from others.

This driver is over 6 feet tall and almost 300 lbs, and the Passat is the only smallish car I find comfortable. Interior dimensions are generous and headroom is still good with the power sunroof. I bought my passat a year and a half ago and since have had to buy three sets of tires, a new airconditioner, a new power mirror motor, the computer says there is an emmision problem when none exists(making it impossible to pass the car in inspection), and now at only 70000 miles the head has cracked forcing oil into the radiator(without overheating). This doesn't seem normal on a car that has been regularly maintained and garage kept. A friend of mine has a 98 passat and has had over $6500 in repairs in the last year. I would expect much more from a car so close to the Audi A4. Don't buy a Passat unless you want to drive a rental every couple months.

I love to drive this car. Unfortunately, I cannot relax in this car due to the problems that I have experienced. When I picked up the car, the sunroof did not work. The brake light on the spoiler shorted out in less than 1 year. With premium gas, still had a bad fuel injector at 22,000 miles. Went for my first post-service warranty oil change to find out that I was short over 2 quarts of oil in less than 5,000 miles and required an engine flush. Mechanic thought car had 100,000 miles, not 30,000. I have taken excellent care of this car - I now check my oil at nearly every gas fill - and I get the feeling that the engine could go at any time.

Not even a hiccup of a problem after $65k. The fuel economy has been terrific, averageing 30 MPG during my daily commute. The performance is solid and the fit and finish is industry leading, as expected in VW/Audi products. Cup holders are insufficient, but usable. It seems that if these great VW ideas actually worked....it would be worthwhile The collapsing side mirrors failed to work, the door handles have always been a problem (even since the 95 passat!), the coil pack has again been a longstanding issue with problems, and the worst issue so far is an intermittent starting problem. My wie and I have had this car for 3 years with no problems and a lot of fun. It is a great long distance traveller, very comfortable, plus it's very quick when you need it (merging in NJ ridiculous traffic, fighting your way through NYC). Car does not handle cold morning (anything below 0 degrees F) startups well -- you have to coax it a bit in the deep winter. It handles like a dream -- I can tell you, as a former Ferrari owner, well, no, it's not a Ferrari, but the 6 cyl GLS version is very agile for a sedan.

We've drive a family of 5 loaded to the hilt 550 miles and got out feeling like we had flown. Purchased the car 1 year used. For the first year I owned it, the car was a dream. Good acceleration, great handling, comfortable ride. In the second year (after the warranty expired), the wagon averaged 1 shop visit a month! Some things were minor recalls/repairs. Others were major malfunctions in my opinion. Decarboning valves, seatbelt issues, oil leaks around the cam seals, etc... This was the top of the line model, only 3 years old with 50k miles! So unreliable, I had to trade it in. Give serious thought to purchasing....try leasing if anything!

Within the short two year warranty, the car was in the shop for various issues: rear cup holder broke, rpm needle jumps while stopped at lights, loud noise from wheel well when making tight turns. So of course once the warranty ended, more problems arose: check engine light came on for "no apparent reason," rpm needle jumps worse than before, foul smell if the heater is on, defroster doesn't work. I babied this car with the best gas, regular service, and garaged it. I'm extremely disappointed and am counting the days to give the car back to VW.

The best looking, most comfortable, reliable, all-round drivable car I have owned in 35 years of driving. We were shopping for an Audi A4 when my wife spotted the Passat. One test drive sold us both. Our car has every creature comfort I could desire, including a back seat that really will accommodate 3 fully grown adults comfortably. It's an outstanding road car, as well, with plenty of power, precise handling, and solid feel at high speed. Highway gas mileage is good (26-29 mpg), but city is not (12-15 mpg). Aside from that, I would be happy never to own another car than our Passat.

Don't think about it just get one!

Leased this vehicle in a pinch- and wish I had taken more time. Dealer played many games on financing and I should have walked then! Want out of my lease and despite all the folks raving over Passats I am weary. Would help if I could like a 2003- as the dealer is playing more games to incent me to stick with it. Burned once.....

I FELT IT URGENT TO DO A REVIEW ON THIS CAR. CONSUMER REPORTS RATED THIS MODEL YEAR BEST FAMILY CAR. ILL TELL YOU WHY WE WERE DISAPOINTED. CUP HOLDERS IN TERRIBLE SPOT, FUNNY SMELL FROM ENGINE THAT CANT BE EXPLAINED BY ANYONE, YOU FEEL LIKE YOUR DRAGGING ON THE GROUND, BLACK FABRIC INTERIOR A NIGHTMARE TO KEEP CLEAN, SMALL PIECES OF RUBBER AND PLASTIC LININGS FOR CONSOLE AND REAR CUPHOLDERS COMES OFF WHEN VACUUMED, CANT OPEN UP CUPHOLDER COMPARTMENT IF YOU SPILL SOMETHING. THE STEREO SYSTEM SOUND IS MUFFLED AND THE FUEL ECONOMY RATING IS NOT TRUTHFUL.

This is a great road car. I look for excuses to drive it on long trips. Seems like the faster you go the better the feel. A strong performer that doesn't need to downshift to climb some fairly steep hills. A car that goes this well really should stop well -- and this one does. The brakes have a really good feel to them. The ride is taunt and doesn't smooth all the bumps, but get real - this is a sports sedan. What you lose in smooth ride is more than compensated for by the handling.

This platform of the Passat is based on the Audi A4 and utilizes the same Audi 1.8L T engine and 4-link suspension. The engine has great low end torque and top end speed. Matched to the 5-speed manual provides a great touring car. The fit-and-finish are typical German high-quality. Bought used w/ less than 16K miles in 2001 and have had zero problems (now at 34K miles). Great MPG for a high performance car (Note to Big 3: It can be done!). Comfortable front leather seats and interior. Monsoon Sound system is also a plus.

I bought this car brand new in 00 The reviews were consistant. This car is a winner. At 26k the cd changer failed ($500). At 39k I need a complete brake overhaul ($700). At 79k the emission light came on and the dealer reset it. At 87k the light came on again and the dealer told me because of cheap gas my converters went bad. I Use premium, get 24 mpg. Like I going to spend 3K on new cats. Federal law mandates that cat s be warranted for 80k (HUM). At 91k the water pump went. At 92k Right side valve cover leaking. 97k same problem at 102k the right side head gasket blew. Last week at 102k the oil leaked on the cats, the car went up in flames!

I bought this car as an alternative to a minivan b/c I was commuting. At the time I had one child and one on the way. It handles excellently and is very comfortable to sit in. You can fit a lot of stuff in the back and there's plenty of leg room in the back seat for the kids in their car seats. You can also comfortably fit 2 car seats and one adult in the back, or 3 car seats. Great acceleration even with the A/C on and low engine noise at any speed.

I bought my 2000 VW Passat Turbo 5spd. in July of that same year--Satin Silver wth custom red (yes, RED) leather interior and upgraded GLX wheels. My other car was a BMW Z3, and others have included other BMWs, Hondas, Toyotas, etc. After one year of ownership, I decided that I liked the car so much that I installed Koni fully adjustable sport suspension, and wider, Toyo sport Proxes S-1 tires. My car is now comfortable, yet very tight, and handles like a dream. So much so that I replaced the Z3 with a Jeep, since I prefer the sport car feel of the Passat. I am getting 40 mpg on the highway, and about 26 mpg combined.

We have thoroughly enjoyed our 2000 Passat GLX wagon from time we drove it off the lot. The satin silver exterior with black leather is stunning. With the exception of a ridiculous cupholder design, the vehicle is terrific in every detail. It features everything you love about high-end German cars but at a 30-something price: power, doors that close with a teutonic thunk, handling, fit/finish, etc. Will probably trade up to the W8 Passat AWD next......

The Passat GLX is a great all-around car. It has excellent handling with the 16" wheels, and very good acceleration with the 2.8L V6. The GLX trim has luxury car amenities such as automatic temperature control, power seats, power moonroof, and heated seats. The car is extremely fun to drive, especially with the 5-speed manual. The build quality is also much better than the VW's of the past with virtually no defects in the almost two-years I've had the car.

With 34,000 behind me, I'm suffering through a love/hate relationship with my first VW. The car has had numerous repairs - emmisions gear; airbag sensor; overhead lighting console. The ceiling was dismantled to fix a rattling sunroof assembly. Numerous rattles. The latest killer was replacing the coolant pipe and pump - a 2 DAY SERVICE JOB! Unaccepatble on a $27k car. But when it's running smooth it's a gem. Notice I said WHEN.

The cruise control is the most accurate I have ever used.

Nice sound system (monsoon) and paint job. Fit and finish is excellent I really like the heated seats. (*Get the V-6 if you can afford it. The gas mileage is about the same as the smaller turbo and has noticeably more torque when climbing hills under load.)

Likes: Comfortable seats, quiet & smooth highway ride, good legrroom in back seat, adjustability of seats and steering wheel, high quality cabin materials, great sound from Monsoon sound system, excellent manual shift, strong & smooth V6 engine Dislikes: Ride is softer than I like and roll during cornering is more than I'd like; a couple rattles have appeared in cabin; price of oil filter is outrageous ($18)
