At 340,000 miles, the time has now come to retire my sienna. I bought this well-maintained example just under a year ago to use for my courier business. In a little under a year I have put over a hundred ten thousand miles on the van. In that time all I've done is a couple of brake jobs, a set of tires, an alternator, and a battery. Not even a tune-up. It still gets 23 MPG or better and does everything I needed to do. The original engine now Burns about a quart of oil every twelve hundred miles or so, the power steering fluid is leaking badly from the rack and pinion, and it's going to need a catalytic converter to pass emissions. This is the reason for the retirement. As it is right now it still runs, shifts, turns, and stops very well. If you're looking for an inexpensive family hauler or something for Courier work, this is about the most reliable older van you can find.

We have 195K on ours that we bought used with 117K on it. Its a family hauler and has been on numerous trips on vacation and back and forth to school. I have owned Chevy, Mazda, Jeep, Chrysler and Honda and couldn't afford to keep them on the road. Toyota reliability is off the charts compared to the others. Now I have a 4Runner as well and it is as good as the Sienna. The van has a lot of amenities for the year. We are having the timing belt done on it now and plan on getting a lot of life out of it. Great vehicle. Low cost of operation.

I bought a 2000 Sienna and people should know that all the 1st generation Sienna's have what are known as "sludge engines". Toyota sent out 3.3 million letters to owners extending the warranty from 3 to 8 years because of this. The engines are defective so join a forum before you buy one and ask about the sludge problem. Also, from what I've read, Toyota has been really nasty and unless the car was ready to die next week they wouldn't honor the warranty extension. Very, very few people got any warranty work done. So it was a con job and because of this engine problem it would be wise to get a different vehicle.

its worth it to buy this van

I just bought the 2000 toyota sienna 3.0 ce, the car is well kept and mechanically maintained by the previous owner. It has 155k miles on it and the interior & exterior are still in good conditions. The price I got was cheap too about $3,500. I choose this van because of the big space inside & because of its brand. toyota van will just move on the road without any trouble. The spare part are cheap & easy to get & there are so many mechanic that can handle this car too. I would suggest to people to but this car. Don't really trust on the negative review about this vehicle, because if you realized, there are many Sienna out there still move strong on the road..

I bought my sienna in 2005 with 75K; 7 years later it now has 160K and is still running strong. In my opinion the sienna is rather homely when compared to other minivans, however it makes up for this with its excellent built quality and reliability. I have never had any problems with this van is the seven years that I owned it. It has excellent build quality both under the hood as well as in the body (very sturdy). It is not very fun to drive but I have yet to find a minivan that is. The sienna does have an excellent ride both on the highway as well as in the city. I am amazed at how well it has held up over the years.

We got this van new in the year 2000. Right now the cars has 213,000 miles on it, no problems, only oil change and timing belt. We've used this car in all kinds of conditions, in snow, dirt, and heavy rain. This van has never let us down. We are looking forward to buy a 2011 Toyota Sienna. Thank you Toyota for a reliable mini-van.

I've owned literally hundreds of vehicles. I've owned this the longest; purchased with 70k, now have 175k. This has proven to be one of the most comfortable and versatile vehicles I have ever owned and one of the most reliable. It has NEVER let me down. NEVER!!! I don't know if I'll ever be able to part with it because it does everything I ask of it whether hauling people or 25 bags of mulch, or towing a boat. Kids are now grown and my wife says I should sell. I can't bring myself to do so. It really is family...

I would have loved to have given it 10's across the board, but it is a minivan! I bought this van from the original owner just over six years ago with 65,000 miles. He was very meticulous with maintenance as am I, and it has really paid off. In my time of ownership I have just done my second timing belt, a new battery, starter, brakes, tires, struts, and wheel bearings. All a reasonable amount of work for 200k, and all preventative. Nothing has ever actually broke on it! The catalytic converter is starting to go finally, and will be $650 to replace when it does. I will happily pay this, as the van still runs as smooth as the day I bought it!

After 140K miles, this Toyota is still doing great. Have not had any major problems with this van at all. In fact this van gets better gas mileage than any vehicle we have ever driven and owned which includes a 4 cyl PT cruiser!! This vehicle has been in 3 wrecks and still was very affordable to replace the parts that needed replacing. It still looks good too! It drives very well even after the 3 wrecks. I'll keep this van and keep putting money in it to keep it going. It is worth it.

My wife and I bought this Sienna new and every 3,000 miles have it serviced. It has over 132,000 miles and for the exception of an alternator has never required any repairs other than the usual brake linings, tires, batteries, etc. It has a lot of "punch' when you step on the gas; almost like you're driving a race car! This was the first non-American vehicle I ever bought and for reliability beats all the American cars I've ever owned hands down! This is a great car for a family who doesn't want to shell out a lot for repairs.

We've had this van for nearly 10 years now, essentially problem-free. Yes, the brakes do squeak a bit, especially when the weather is hot but that's a minor annoyance. We drive a LOT, in all kinds of weather, and have been delighted with the incredible reliability. It handles great in heavy snow; it does have a wide turning circle but so do other vans I've driven. We've had no issues with oil sludge or any of the other complaints I've read about here. Our kids have grown so I don't think we'd buy another minivan, but if we did, I'd definitely go for another Sienna.

I bought this van in 1999, needing flexibility for hauling bicycles and music/PA equipment. Periodically I keep toying with the idea of buying a new one, but then again it has so few miles (62k) and has been so darn reliable, that I just can't convince myself to spend $30k for a new one. Other than problematic power window switches, the vehicle has been pretty much bulletproof. Engine sludge? Not sure what I think but I have changed the oil personally every 3k (of late so few miles ever 6 months with synthetic) and no evidence of sludge in oil filler area. Still starts without complaint first try and runs like a top after nearly 10 years.

Still going...

We had no problems until 65,000 miles. Since then, the transmission busted ($2,300 for a rebuilt trans.) and both sliding door handles have broken (around $330 to fix for both). All tires had to be changed at 15,000 miles and again at 40,000. Definitely some alignment issues. A good car, but quality control seems to be becoming an issue for some Toyotas. That said, I'm considering replacing this with another Toyota (RAV4), so I guess it goes to show I've not given up on Toyota's perceived reliability.

I have owned this Sienna from day one, and so far w/95000 miles it has lived up to the reputation of Toyota by being the most reliable van I have owned. Have there been problems, sure, but minor: rear brake squeal and sliding power door sensor. Other than routine service, it's been a pleasure. Hope to have it another 7 years w/200,000 miles!

We bought this as a certified used van in 2003 w/28k. It now has 103k and still going strong. This has been a great van. The interior space is a little smaller than our old Previa was, but it has been ok. Since we have owned it we have had very few repairs beyond normal service. The window guides had to be replaced at one point and we had an O2 sensor replaced. The leather is starting to show signs of wear, but generally still in good shape. Gas mileage has been about 18 in the city and 23-24 on the highway (I drive fast). I would buy this van again with no regrets.

It drives very good, like a car, and it's roomy, the seats are very comfortable. It seems very solid and well built. I don't worry about reliability at all- it's a Toyota!! Great gas mileage for something bigger. Very easy to get in and out of with kids ! Very smooth ride. You just cannot beat Toyotas for reliability!!

We purchased our Sienna right after our second child was born. A mini-van for a young family is a must! The ease of getting them in and out (especially when you have one in a carrier) is worth the money alone. This (for us) is the pure car pool / soccer practice / grocery-getter / long trip vehicle. Gas mileage (especially on trips) is outstanding. There's plenty of room for luggage and several kids. Ours is nearly paid off and we'll probably keep it - when we do decide to trade.

I have owned numerous cars in the past, new & old, & can honestly say this vehicle is one of the most practical & smooth riding vehicles I have ever had. All 3 rows of seats are like sitting in our most comfortable chair in our living room! It truly rides like a Cadillac, but has the room of a mini-van. My guess is that we'll soon trade in the 2000 Sienna for another one. Why not give them a try! You won't be disappointed!

She came in to the family at the same time as my twins... she has held up with the mistreatment of the baby years, the toddler years of abuse going on to the abuse of two little 6 year energizer bunnies that use the van as their alternate toy chest, sleeping bed, fighting ring, fast food table, after the beach resting area, camping house, immagenary treasure hunt cave, space ship and who knows what else... but she keep on running and keeping my two precious gems and my Queen safe and my pockets free of mechanics hand picking. She just askes for regular maintenance and thats it.. exception, a small Power Steering oil leak that I will attend to asap.. plan to have her for at 15 ys

For a five year old van with relatively low mileage, our Sienna has had some serious reliability issues. In the past 12 months, we've replaced a front axle, transmission, driver's & passenger seat belts, and driver's exterior door handle. Fortunately, our dealer has gone to bat for us and the only out of pocket cost has been the $200 door handle. We also recently found out that we need a new ABS control module ($1800) and the spare tire wench won't lower the spare tire ($160). They've declined to cover either of these items, so we've formally appealed to corp. grievance. The first three years we loved the van, the last two have been very disappointing to say the least.

Our Sienna XLE developed an oil sludge problem despite oil changes every 3200 miles. The oil changes weren't made at the dealership, however, so Toyota initially denied warranty. Toyota also denied sludge problem with their engines. We spent thousands in repairs. Fortunately, an honest repairman at another dealership saw to it that we were comped a rebuilt engine. It also was a lemon, and the rebuilt one was replaced by the initial dealership. Nissan gave us $8700 on trade in, and we LOVE our Nissan. After 5 Toyotas and Lexus ... never again.

Well designed interior, but that doesn't make up for the sludge problem that Toyota hid from consumers for several years. We spent $6,000 in repairs on engine because local dealership would not back us up even with demonstrated oil changes per specifications. Finally, Toyota put in a new engine under the warranty -- but the $6,000 in expense, plus a horrible experience with Champion Toyota, has made us never want another Toyota. It's sad, because we've owned 6 Toyotas and 2 Lexus over the years. So much for customer loyalty.

The van has been great in many areas. GOOD = Easy use of controls for the driver, comfortable seats for long trips, easy to remove rear seats, dual sliding doors. BAD = replaced transmission after 5K miles. Replaced CD player after 10K. Seat belt light stays on even when seat belt is on. Rust on top of car and we garage the van everyday and night. Tires wore out after 20K replaced with better quality Michelin. Overall the van has been good, I would buy another one but get the 6yr warranty.

Several design issues and problems: huge turning radius, not designed for 2 child seat tethers in the second row, CD player quit, passenger window fell off track, rust starting on the hood. It's an ok van, but I don't know why it is usually rated so high. Toyota could have and should have done better.

The Sienna van was our first newly purchased vehicle since we got married in 1987 and it was money well spent. The accessability into the van made it a nice change from having to crawl in and out of the seats. Everything for the driver is at your finger tips and the adaptability to the controls was easy.My wife and I think the gas mileage could be better but for the size of the vehicle and motor it is comprable to other vans.

My Toyota has been great, I just recently moved, and I was very pleased to have a bigger vehicle to ease my moving problems. I really like this vehicle overall however there's very minor problem. Sometimes when get into the car and buckle up, the seatbelt unfastened light blinks, even though I have my seatbelt on. I double check and refasten myself but the light is still on, until I repeat the fastening about 5-7 times. I don't know what's up with that problem but I'll have to go to the dealer to see what's wrong. Other than that the car is great for the family, for the kids, and for those long trips.

Good Performer -- beautiful family car.

Bought it new. Thrilled by its looks at first sight -- Much preferred it to Honda Odyssey's appearance. Price difference was negligible between the Honda and the Sienna (Sienna was $200 more) -- the Sienna felt more car-like in handling and ride, was more comfortable for the driver and front passenger, and had better visibility. My biggest gripe about minivans -- make them with rear windows that open? I am claustrophobic, and I wish minivan designers would not make you feel so closed in. Would like a hybrid minivan soon, and if tax rebates are given for hybrids, that'll be what we trade up to.

I have not had one single problem with my minvan in the 4 years and 74,000 miles I have driven it. Drives great even up to 80-90mph. Dependability has been awesome. As a girls soccer coach, this van has been perfect for hauling around players to games and tournaments.

Having owned it for close to 4.5 years, I am satisfied regardless of high price. Have had repeated skipping with the CD player but Toyota replaced it no questions asked. I've also had to bring it in twice to correct a design flaw that led to a blown rear heater line leaking fluid. One problem is the captains seat in center row have seatbelts that lock WAY too easy. Gas mileage has been less than I had hoped for, but the ride is smooth as ever and I love the ability to remove each seat individually, as well as hand controls on wheel for radio. I would say that I'm not 100% thrilled but am blinded by the ever-slick tranny and solid construction.

I'd rather drive the Sienna.

The thing that really stands out about this van is the light and crisp feel of the steering. I have driven most makes of minivans and only the Chrysler vans have come close to the Toyota Sienna's pleasant driving experience. I also like the logical layout in the driver's area - this is a car that anyone can get into and drive without much of a learning curve.

This is an excellent family vehicle. The only real problems are the weak brakes, rattle in the rear (found in plastic panels and fixed with foam tape), and confusing accessory controls on steering wheel. Small price to pay for unequaled dependability and family safety.

Our Sienna has proven to be a very wise purchase and great asset to the family. We have 2 young children and the spaciousness of the cabin has proven to be everything we'd expected. The van is strikingly similar in overall size, power, and driver "feel" to my parent's Lexus RX300 SUV--it's got gobs of power. The black exterior is, as the conventional wisdom states, hard to keep clean.

I have to say that this van has been a joy to own. It has gone to Florida many times, plus served well as "Mom's School Bus". On July 9, 2003 we were in an accident with 4 other vehicles. We were hit from behind. The lady who hit us paniced and pushed us into 4 other vehicles. I have to say that the way this van was built saved our lives. The van had $10,300 in damage, but the passenger cabin was in very good condition after all was said and done. We did have to go to the hospital, and had some serious bumps and bruises, but I feel the body of this van, along with seatbelts, saved our lives.

Still love it at 60,000 miles!

We got our Sienna in 1999 when the new Honda van just came out. We couldn't even find one to test drive. We looked at the Sienna and the Villager and it was a no contest. This van is good to drive, allows flexible seating and storage, and is extremely durable. We just paid it off and are looking forward to driving it for another four years.

I ordered my Sienna sight-unseen over the internet. I was living in Ft Smith, AR. I had gone into the Toyota dealer there. They weren't interested in making a deal and didn't even have a Sienna on the showroom floor. I submitted a search using Autobuytel and the Tulsa, OK dealer contacted me. They offered me a great deal on a Sienna CE. I picked my new Sienna up on a rainy afternoon in late September and immediately fell in love with it on the 95 mile drive home to Ft Smith that day. It handles like a dream. Other feel top-heavy and don't manuver well at speed. You get none of that feel with the Sienna. It sticks to the road like a champ.

I absolutely love this car. I was hesitant when looking because I had never had a van before and when I did my first test drive I called it a bus. Now that we have owned it for a few years, I really really like it and all the features. A TV in the ceiling is helpful for traveling distances with kids. We don't use it runing around town and it isn't noticeable when not in use. The remote headphones allow you to listen to radio in front while TV is on in back.

Fit and finish of vehicle is good. In 2002, the right sliding door developed a small rattle (something inside door) more just a nuisance. In town gas mileage is bad (around 15 mpg). Highway driving has been excellent (~25- 27 mpg). fabric is holding up well. dunlop tires aren't very good for wear as I'll be needing new tire in the next 3K (currently at 45K miles). Changing oil and filter is very easy. Dual A/C works great even on the hottest days. Paint job on car is pretty average with a lot of orange peel in paint job (typical for japanese cars). I'm looking at trading it in for the 2004 sienna.

Visibility is excellent while driving the Sienna as should be expected. The comfort of the overall ride and the fit and finish of the interior is excellent. The controls are all user friendly with one exception. The radio control on the steering wheel is easily engaged accidently and changes your radio station on you or your song on CD or tape by the way you hold the steering wheel. You must be conscience of where you place your hand on the left side of the wheel. The stereo system in the LE is just acceptable, nothing supreme really. I have owned two Nissan Quests in years past. The Sienna is a full level of comfort and safety above the Quest in my opinion.

We have been loyal Toyota buyers, but no more! Our Sienna has been a real disappointment. The engine is holding up well, but the interior and exterior is falling apart. When a penny size toy hit the window while the kids were playing the window shattered to pieces. My five year old was able to rip the handle right off the door while trying to open the door. We researched all mini vans when we were ready to buy. As like most of you, it probably came down to the Sienna and the Odessey. We ruled out the Odessey in 2000 for the simple reason of not having leather seats. We would be bring how a newborn in our new car and the though of the first time she might get sick in the car with cloth seats was my decision only to get leather. (The Odessy wasn't very stylish either.) We just replace the brakes at 30K and have never had a problem at all with our car. We just saw pix of the 2004 coming in March and are thinking about the upgrade due to all of the new safety features.

I don't thrash my car, after all, it is a minivan, but on the other hand, I am probably not the most conscientious person about servicing the car. I bought the Sienna after two successive mediocreChrysler minivans. I wanted a reliable vehicle, and the Sienna has been a success in that area. Ergonomically, the Sienna is poor at best - not enough adjustment in the tilt wheel and power seat, radio in a poor location, controls on steering wheel in poor locations. The finish work on the leather armrest was poor, and the van continues to have many rattles unless full loaded. In fact, I think I've just talked myself out of buying it out at the end of the lease.

Our 2000 Toyota Sienna has been a great automobile. We have just over 60000 miles on it and all we have had to do to it is replace the battery and brake pads. It is dependable, it gets good gas mileage, rides smoothly, and has been great for our realestate business. I drove a 2000 the other day, and I currently have a previa. What's with the seats on this thing? They must have taken design cues from Chrysler, because they're spongy and flimsy at the same time. Why did they change?!! Also, they went backwards withthe armrests, which used to adjust and now have only one position. Americanized crap, if you ask me. I'm sure the reliability is high, but if you can't get comfortable, who cares?

My husband and I did alot of research on mini-vans before we chose the Sienna. We have not regretted our choice for a minute! We made our choice based mainly on the reliability and safety features of the Sienna, but since we spend alot of time in this vehicle the smoothness of the ride was the deciding factor. We have had no problems with our Sienna, except for a CD player that skipped. It was promptly replaced by the dealer without question. When we get our next van the question won't be which van to get, but what year model!

After much research, I narrowed it down to Odyssey or Sienna. I went with Toyota because it gets better fuel economy. The Sienna is a joy to drive, gets 25mph highway, 17 town. Except when I'm towing a boat, of course. :) Total tow weight is 1200 pounds- loaded with boat and camping gear it slows down on hills, but not uncomfortably. Great van, great dealership. Bought it in 2000, and haven't had any problems. Only thing worth mentioning is after shelling out almost 30k, Tires should be something that you wouldn't have to worry about for a while. Well, with 19k on it, had no choice but to remove those yuk Firestones with some Michelins. This also improved the somewhat harsh suspension. Overall, I think the van is great for 4 passengers, but any more where you will need to constantly use the 3rd row seats, forget it, it's too small, and the cargo space is ridiculously small. Also, ergonomically has some blind spots, it's tough to back up with it. It's a cute looking van, but too small.

I have owned a Toyota Sienna XLE for 2 years now. After 21000 miles we've had no mechanical problems at all. The leather interior still smells like new. The van is extremely comfortable and quiet; I would choose it any day over a standard luxury car. The trade off is performance; it's a minivan after all. The V-6 has ample power for accelerating to highway speeds, but you're not going to be going out of your way to drive twisty roads. It seats 7, though, and carries a ton with the seats removed.

After a horrible sales experience, the greatness of our Sienna quickly overpowered it. I think they are the best looking of the minivans out there, although I don't think minivans will ever make parents feel sexy driving them. Not a single problem and love all the cup holders and storage compartments in the back. I like the realibility of the Toyota name but the thing that sold me on it was the crash test ratings. Nothing feels better than knowing that your family is the safest it can be and knowing that you've made an informed decision by checking all your facts first.

The Toyota Sienna is the best, and most reliable vehicle we have ever encountered! We have never had any problems with it, exept for a broken seatbelt once. My sister had a Ford Aerostar, and it was a piece of JUNK! IT CAUGHT ON FIRE, AC WENT OUT, AND TRANSMISSION WAS SHOT JUST 10K AFTER SHE BOUGHT IT! Also it wasn't just her AEROSTAR THAT HAD PROBLEMS, FRIENDS DID TOO! If I were you I wouldn't buy an American car, because to be honest, they don't compare to Japanese or European cars! ALSO, I DON'T THINK THE ONE WHOS SAYING ALL THE NEGATIVE COMMENTS ABOUT THE SIENNA IS TELLING THE WHOLE TRUTH!!!!!!

Excellent vehicle for any size family

The Sienna LE is an outstanding vehicle for any size family. I love all the room, it handles very nicely and goes from slow to fast quickly. It is not sluggish, which you might expect from a minivan. This vehicle is considered a luxury vehicle to our family. Cons: The sloping front makes it difficult to determine where your front end is, I bumped into curbs a lot; still, that could just be me, I loved the Sienna.

Had to replace the transmission at 15k and less than two years old. The dealership took two weeks to get the part and then they botched the job so i ended up stranded.

We love it!

Our family of four plus pets have been very fond of this car. We have had no breakdown with it, no troubles except for the third row seat release, which doesn't always work as easily as it should to remove and replace the third row seats. Otherwise, the car has been quiet and comfortable to drive, mechanically reliable, and a joy on long trips. It's hard to understand how one reviewer in this column has gotten such a lemon.

I'd do it again

I purchased my 2000 Sienna CE new after buying a used Camry. The Toyota quality is fantastic. I rent mini-vans of all makes with my employment so I was familiar with competing products. I test drove the Sienna and bought it on the spot and took it home to my wife who is thrilled with the car. The ride is very smooth and quiet. We are comfortable and well rested after a long trip. I am currently pricing a new 2002 Sienna to replace this one

We've had no problems at all with the Sienna and it's been a comfortable vehicle for long trips and taxiing kids around town.

Our Sienna has been virtually trouble-free, and we've also experienced an accident. The Sienna did an admirable job of protecting everyone, and the ALR rear seatbelts held the kids' car seats tight during the wreck. Still, I dislike this van. I find the Sienna dreadfully uncomfortable. The front seats are mushy and offer virtually no support. The cargo space behind the third-row seat is not terribly good, and I wish the Toyota had the same disappearing third-row seat as the Honda does.
