Need to a add one quart of oil for 175 miles. Burns oil and clogs exhaust system. I was told that this is a problem with models from 2000 to 2003. I replaced the engine, hoping to "fix the problem", but the replacement engine was just the same. I threw away $2,000.00. Very disappointed. The car is great otherwise. Update: Great mechanic fixed the problem!! I'm happy with the car now.

Slightly disappointed

Perhaps I got a dud but I was disappointed. I kept up all maintanence. But at 194k miles the transmission went out, shocks went out, gasket blew and alternator died. 194k miles for a Toyota is to soon for transmission and engine problems. Especially since the early 90s models are going 250k+ miles with no problems. It did get great gas mileage and maintanence was cheap. I'd still take Toyota over Ford or Dodge any day.

My 2000 Corolla still kicking butt at 151,000 miles

I just bought this car recently from a Ford dealership of all places(haha!) for 4,300 and although that price may be high, I didn't leave the lot with the car until I comfortable that it was in great running condition. And it was, and still is. Stupid check engine light was on when I bought it, but ignored it. Had autozone check it,P0171 bank 1 fuel mixture too lean(rough idle is all I noticed). So I bought 2 new bosch o2 sensors(pre and post catalytic), a bosch fuel pump, 2 rear Monroe econo matic quik struts, new bosch spark plugs, stp air filter, oil change(bosch oil filter), didn't need anyone of these parts but I got them anyways. Runs perfect, not a single problem. MY FAVORITE CAR.

Now this is a Toyota

I got this car used from my cousin. It had been in two different accidents and was still going strong. This model of Toyota could not be killed. Everything worked, motor sang like a sewing machine and looked very neat and clean. The only thing I didn't like was the size of the inside.

I got my 2000 toyota corolla when i was 19 for my first car and i just now (4 years later) got rid of it because it was to small, i have a baby now and the backseat is not very big. Besides the lack of space my corolla was awesome, only thing i ever had to to do was routine maintenance! Awesome first car. If your not worried about space i definitely recommend a corolla cant beat toyota reliability!

We've used this car as a daily commuter and grocery getter for over seven years and it still hangs tough. The check engine light stays on for no reason that the mechanic can find, but it still runs well. One day we'll move up to something more modern, but for basic, economical transportation it will still be running around town when today's Dodge Calibers and Nissan Versas are toast. Those who survive the apocalypse will be driving Corollas.

I'm a college student with a very limited budget so I needed something reliable and at a good price. Since my summer job requires about 800 miles of driving a month in my own car and I drive the 200 miles to see my fiance as much as possible fuel economy was important. Therefore I went with the Corolla. It has been a GREAT decision. With about 28 mpg in the city I was making a decent amount on my gas check. Have had no mechanical problems and previous owner showed me his maintenance record with no abnormal maintenance. It only has a 4 cylinder engine but because of its small size it picks up great. Granted I was used to driving a 97 Chevy Astro and a 92 Pontiac transport but this is sweet!

I have the 2000 VE corolla with the 4sp automatic and I just wanted to day that it's been a wonderful tough car. Drove on deep Canadian snow, hot humid summer days and in heavy thunderstorms and it always got me there. It's been 10 years and 200,000 miles and people say the car specially the interior doesn't look ten years old and it doesn't have the stench that other old cars do. Planning to run it down another 60,000 miles before buying a new corolla. The tranny and engine combo on this car is great and I love the fact that u can disable overdrive, helps u accelerate quickly on highway and when your done turn it back on and u can cruise quietly at 60mph. This Cars ride is really soft too.

Our car started burning oil after just 4 years of owning it. We kept taking it back to the dealer with no luck on getting it fixed. We just kept putting oil into it every week. Then the motor went at 212,000. We were shocked. We will never buy another Toyota again after what we went through.

I purchased Corolla on the basis of staunch quality history. Unfortunately, I got nothing but issues. No Kidding! Here they are: Exhaust manifold flange gasket, all 4 power window motors, rear engine main seal, instrument cluster lights went out, inner tie rod, and huge vibration at 65mph. Yes, the car never got me stuck on the road, but I think I'll stick with other more reliable quality vehicles out there.

This car has 220,000 miles on it and consumes tons of oil. Weekly it will "use" 2 qts. of oil. It doesn't leak, it doesn't smoke... so where does it go? I just refill it and go. This car is stout and handles very well except in the snow. 220,000 miles and it is still strong. I just have to buy stock in an oil distribution company. Nothing beats Toyota!

I bought this car new because I have always heard about Toyota dependability. Gas was never 30 mpg as advertised. I have had problems with the oil. Several times, the oil light would not be on but when I checked it or the oil was changed, nothing showed on the stick. I have had the engine checked several times but they did not detect any leak. Finally, someone determined the valve cover gasket was leaking. Now I have had the valve cover gasket changed several times to no avail--I put in oil almost every time I use it. Also inside handles on all 4 doors have broken off. I have owned some pretty old cars, but never had all the door handles break off. I would not buy it again.

I totaled my new '98 corolla my freshman year of college (I wasn't hurt a bit though). We replaced it with 2000 corolla. I loved both cars. My little white "curla" has lasted me more than I would imagine. I drove it all through college, back and forth to work, and now, 9 years later, I have a carseat for my little boy in there, and commute 150 miles/day. And it's still just right for me. I have over 200,000 miles on it, have rear ended someone, hit a deer, and it's still tickin. Plus, I'm not looking to get rid of it any time soon, and when I do, I just might look at another corolla.

I have the stripped down VE model. Few bells or whistles. The interior is carefully laid out and only wish there was an arm rest. I agree with others that the 3 speed automatic is not the best choice, especially if you do a lot of hwy miles. Still, for reliable and basic transportation it shines.

I have had this car for a little over 4 years. I bought it when it had just over 50k miles on it. Now, it has almost 120k miles. I plan on running it for another 100 or 200k. It's a good little car and will probably be around for my kids to drive when they are old enough in another 16 years. My only issues with it are it's not very roomy, I'm 6'8" and don't fit very well, but I fit in here as well as I do in most cars, even bigger cars. The driver's side handle has broken, the ceiling fabric has developed a rip in the rear by the rear window from the driver's side windows being open. The driver's inside handle is broken and the window doesn't roll up. I only get just over 30 mpg. It was 36.

Purchased car with 93K on it. Had owned five previous Toyotas and ran most of them past 200K. This one is an oil burner - uses 1 quart per 400 miles. Toyota does not recognize that it is a design defect although it seems to be very prevalent in these cars (98-2002 Corollas). If you are looking to purchase one - be sure to check the exhaust pipe for excessive black soot and look in the oil filler cap for oil sludge (check underside of cap for black crumbly deposits and look inside oil filler for brown coating - if it has these features I recommend to stay away from it). Also the engine light just came on - not sure yet what this problem is. Struts are worn out as well.

Not the flashiest of vehicles, but definately the most reliable car I have driven. I bough my car used with 23k miles on it in '03, and have put about 25k miles a year on it driving between WA and OR states. Not a single problem. Engine power isn't bad, and fuel economy is awesome. I get about 40 mpg on the hwy with my 5 sp manual.

This car is great. It goes forever on a tank of gas and has enough room for all of my hockey gear. I can pick 3 of my smaller friends and bring them with me anywhere. Sometimes I wish the engine was a little bit more sporty, but it has got enough juice to make a pass without a problem, but it won't win any races. It has lots of little pieces that rattle, like the door locks and window crank.

I used to have great faith on Toyota until I realized my 42 K mile 5 year old toyota has an engine problem that is truly a manufacture defect! I bought it when it was 17 K miles. In May 05, I noticed oil light on and checked there was NO oil left in my engine at all. Immediately I took it to a very good car repair place and changed oil and they did not detect any leak. The assumption then was the previous oil change was not done properly; then 6 weeks later (yesterday) the oil light came back on and same issue - NO OIL in the car. I am not very pleased with the engine problem but it seems to me Toyota won't do anything about it which is unacceptable.

This is a reasonable car to own if you don't want something too big but not too small, as passanger space is quite appropriate. The newer model is even better. Fuel mileage is an obvious advantage (30-40 mpg). The stereo system is more impressive than I thought it would be and the ergonomics are well thought out, although the cup holder is poorly designed. Two really annoying things are the locks and light. You can never turn the lights off unless the engine is off and the car automatically locks even if not in gear.

Not having a lot of money and needing a reliable and efficient car, I bought the most basic Corolla. I doubt I could have gotten more value for my money from another new car. The car has 57500 miles now, and the only problem I had was burnt-out check engine indicator (promptly fixed by the dealer under the manufacturer's warranty). The car handles very well, has very good angles (I can make a U-turn almost anywhere), and can fit into almost any parking spot. It has a decent acceleration (w/ manual transmission) and is comfortable at freeway speeds (passable even at 85-90 mph if needed). It gives me a great gas mileage -- upto 40mpg on the freeway and 27-33 in the city.

Can't get better than this!

I have had my car for approx. 2 years and have not once had to put it in the shop for major service. If you take care of this car (i.e. oil changes, tires) it will last you a long time. When I walked into the dealer I never expected to walk out with a Corolla however, it was the best decision. For the money I paid, I'm going to run this thing into the ground. Super car. Comfortable (have driven to Canada and New York with no complaints from my passengers). And you can't beat the resale value.

Well you can't expect everything from an economy car. No frills here, but as far as economy and reliability are concerned this is the car to have. I have found it easy to drive/maneuver and surprisingly zippy for the small engine. The ergonomics and placement of interior controls are right on. The stereo even sounds quite impressive.

I drive this car daily to and from work, which is a 130 mile round trip, and maintain speeds of 75 to 80 mph. The Corolla still gets me between 37 and 40 mpg. What a money savings this car has been especially with the rising gas prises.

I have owned this car for almost 4 years. It is very reliable, fuel economy has been excellent, auto transmission is smooth, but not much fun to drive. The car can use more horse power when fully loaded (1 driver + 3 passengers) or climbing uphills. Not very comfortable for long distance driving, wind and road noise is high comparing to mid-size cars. Engine is also loud when accelerating. Not stable on windy roads.

Had a 2000 Toyota Corolla 5 speed. I don't drive it any more as I got onto a 3-series BIMR. I like the 5 speed transmission. Can do burnouts easily though the front wheel dr. is little annoying. Not fancy, but reliable. I wouldn't had gone for a Corolla if it was not a 5-speed. Poor handling. Be careful when you drive it in corners. Not really safe.

With 39K on the odometer, this car is excellent and everything works. Drives like new and the 4-Speed Auto is smooth. The 1.8 VVT-i is peppy and I just by a hair beat a Sunfire GT (2.4?) from a stoplight. Cruise control and AUTO down driver's window are handy features. I do drive fast at times and still get 37MPG. The looks are also nice. I get compliments.

Bought this car in Sept. 2000 and it's been an absolute joy to drive. My only concern was winter driving and how well the all-season tires would do. The car quickly put my concerns to rest. The front-wheel drive and the O/D button on the automatic shift give the car solid traction and great control. Hills are never a problem and I only have to fill up ever three weeks for city driving. All around it's just a fantastic car.

This little car offered more than I ever expected. Although it was a CE it had many of the power features of the fancier priced models. A big, roomy package at a small price! It definitely moves out on the highway where I do most of my driving, but the milage was always 36-40 mpg. Overall, if not an A+, it still gets an A. I just bought my second one after nearly three satisfied years! GREAT car for the money!

Great car for the money.

I bought this car used from a Ford Dealer and it has given me no problems as of yet. The build quality and reliability are amazing, Being young I have rode in many other smaller cars and this car just feels like it has been put together well. The 1.8L VVT- i engine is on par with its competetors. It has far more torque than a civic, and the power comes on down low. Lets not be mistaken this car is no rocket, but if driven right it's no slouch. I have the 4 speed auto and it shifts smoothly. To sum up this car in one word it would be smooth. I recomend this car to anyone who needs a good reliable car at an extremely afordable price.

I brought this car over 2 years ago, and have had no problems with it whatsoever. I get regular oil changes, and some regular maintainance. It is very dependable.

I loved my little Corolla!

I had my little Corolla for almost 3 years. It was the first car I ever bought and I loved it. It was very reliable and got great mileage. There was a lot of space for such a small car. It handled pretty well and came with a lot of little conveniences which really helped. I drove that car everywhere and never worried about it. It wasn't fancy but it sure got the job done! I just traded it in last week for a Celica (which I am loving too!).

This car saved my life!

I had the stripper model. 3 speed transmission, 33mpg hwy. The performance is fairly good, but I would steer away from the 3 speed trans. This car handles very nicely. I'm a nutzoid driver who makes the passengers eat the side windows when I take the curves. The ride is fairly quiet and fairly smooth. Reliability is already spoken for and that is, get your basic service, and it will survive a nuclear blast. Not to mention I rolled this car a few times on the fwy going 60, and it held up VERY well. Definitely a safe car to drive. I came out without a SCRATCH.

Would like to see more features for the money. But it is fun to drive and is easy for my wife who has a disability to get in and out of
