Can't say enough about this car. Purchased new. Until last year no problems whatsoever. Regular maintanance only; brakes, shocks, tires, belts, ect. This past year bearings, power steering pump. Will run it until it is no longer financially prudent. By far the best car I've ever owned. Q

I just turned 20 and I've had the car for about 2 years. I have torn the hell out of the car and drove it like a bat out of hell. It always started up no matter what. I've had two minor wrecks in the car. And had to drive it with several problems. But it just won't die. There is always plenty of room. My stepdad who is 6ft 3inches use to drive it all the time.

15 years and counting!

I never thought I would ever keep a car this long but my Avalon still checks almost every box. It continues to be the roomy, quiet and comfortable vehicle that I purchased new in 2000. Had a few (not major) maintenance issues in the eighth and tenth year. Since then reliability has been remarkable. And its exterior remains relatively bright and clean even though my old house has no garage or carport. I do wash it weekly and regularly change the oil. My two complaints are that the MPG has declined to 18 MPG in city driving. 24 MPG highway. And although the air conditioning has always worked great, it makes a short whistling sound every 15-20 minutes. Its annoying. This has gone on for over five years and Toyota cannot seem to figure out what to do to correct it.

One year update with my 2000 Toyota Avalon.

It's been exactly a year since I bought my 2000 Toyota Avalon XLS from a private sale. I purchased it with 124,000 miles and its been very reliable with not a single problem. It is really impressive that my 13 year old Avalon still provides a silky smooth drive and is very quiet even compared to never cars. This Avalon is a "poor man's" Lexus. I drove 26K miles in this year: 450 miles a week due to work, a 1750 road trip from GA to TX, and 7000 miles of small mountain trips. Even with both leaky valve cover gaskets, leaky cam seals, old timing belt and water pump and blown struts this Toyota has never left me stranded and drove excellent. Before I give this to my mom I will repair it.

I purchased my XLS used with 175,000 miles on it. I was looking for reliability, safety, and a low payment vehicle that could help me while I paid of credit cards. The car has been reliable, comfortable, and a pleasure to own. Everyone wants me to do the driving when a group is going somewhere and no-one thinks it has the mileage that it does (200K+ now). I keep getting the urge to look at other cars that might be more sporty or fun to drive but look at the reviews and issues with other cars and can't think of anything more fun than having had no problems at all with this terrific car. I would recommend it to anyone who needs to drive - any distance...

Love it or leave it.......can't decide

I've had this car for almost 13 years now and still am not tired of it. I'd like to get something else - different style vehicle but this car is paying me now. Gas mileage is better than any new car I've looked at and can still trust its reliability. There have been some problems, sensor issues most often but they've been manageable. We had some real wheel rust and had it taken care of. My car looks newer and better than a lot of newer cars out there.

They don't make them like this anymore.

Bought this car used with 126000 miles on it. Now a few miles from 200000, I hav'nt had to do anything but oil changes to it. These 2000-2004 model Avalons are the last of the great Toyotas. The newer Toyotas quality cannot compare. There's no better used sedan out there, bar none.. from the comfort and the gas mileage to the realiability.

I bought my Avalon with 92k miles on it. A friend had driven one from his father's car lot and remarked at what great gas mileage he got on a road trip. I drove it and bought it immediately. The road manners are what you would expect for a luxury sedan of this type; not sporty but "safe" feeling. I have driven it on 16-18 hour trips for years and was always comfortable (5'11" 180). Mileage had always been 28-29 hwy. and 20-22 city. We now have 236K on the car and have only done brakes once, timing belt, water pump and seals twice, replaced the sub-woofer and that's all! It has been the most reliable car I have owned and that includes Mercedes, Hondas, Lincoln and Ford. I plan to buy another!

I live in the NW and this is my girlfriends car. She has owned it since day 1 of its life and takes good care of it. Miles; 126K Pros; Dirves great, good gas milage, stars every time, dependable, and is comfortable for long hauls. Cons; In the last 2 years things have started to break/fail. She has replaced the key ignition twice for 2 different reasons. Some rattles have started to show up, it is 10 years old. The sub-woffer has a short, we found out it's in the stereo it self.

This is by far the best car I have ever owned. I frequently look at these reviews about cars and wonder if they are biased towards Japanese cars. Well let me tell you, I just bought my Avalon with 108k on it and it drives like it only has 4 miles on it. Everything works flawlessly and it starts right up every morning. The look of this car is second to none, distinguished and stylish. I love the leather interior and the spacious trunk. I feel like I float to work instead of drive to work. The engine purrs like a kitten with no hitch on acceleration. This car puts ALL American mid size sedans to rest HANDS DOWN. the quality in workmanship is impeccable

We bought this car used (5 yrs old, in 2005)when I was 6 months pregnant with our first child. We've had NO issues with it at all. We've replaced one battery and two sets of wiper blades in the 5 1/2 years we've owned it, and it now has 210K on it. It's incredible, really. It's no longer when parked beside any other typical sedan (my in-laws had an Acura 3.2TL) but my mind finds it hard to understand where all the space inside comes from! My 6' tall husband can sit in the back seat with the front seats all the way back and his knees don't touch the front seats-we love that the backseat isn't just for the kids. Definately room for everyone in here!

This car has been in my family since its original purchase in 2000. The car was passed onto me in 2008 with 150,000 miles on it. It still drives like the day it was purchased. The interior cabin is dead quiet and the ride is incredibly smooth. It is fantastic for road trips, it gets about 30 mpg on the highway using regular fuel. It accelerates well for a car of its size. It handles well in snow, as long as you drive accordingly. It is incredibly reliable, it starts up right away every morning (even when it is 5 degrees outside). Also, the sound system is fantastic.

Pros: Great fuel economy for the size. VERY comfortable interior. Interior cabin is huge. Tons of rear legroom ! Cons: Rides like a 1970 Lincoln Mark 5 but handles like one too. Getting ready to take it in for yet another Toyota recall. Sensors going bad left and right. 02 and air-fuel ratio sensors and now the air bag light started flashing. It is also starting to have electrical gremlins (lights flickering)I have owned several Toyotas in the past and the quality and reliability used to be 2nd to none. Man has that changed. Ever wonder why Ford is selling so many vehicles now ? Because they build a better vehicle...Wake up Toyota, you lost yet another customer.

Wife's car but I drive it often. Had one service visit in ten years - dirty MAF sensor. Doesn't get any better than that. Does everything you'd want it to do in silence and comfort. Remarkably large cabin for a mid-sized vehicle. Trunk holds a ton of stuff too. JBL sound system is great. Visibility is outstanding (except as noted below). Wife gets 22 MPG (reg gas) around town. I get almost 30 on highway. Paint still looks like new. Only one small and insignificant rattle in almost 90K miles. I call it a Japanese Buick but its much better than a GM car.

Great car.

Big car. Great when having friends or large family trips. 2000 Model looked good inside all controls convenient. Did not use sun roof but came with car. Skid control was not worth the extra I paid for it. Would not purchase that again even though I live in Northeast did not use it much. For 6 years most everything stayed intact and no problems. You have to love the interior room for everyone it is great! Also not that bad on gas. Had a very quiet ride. Into my 7th year things started falling apart. From 7th to 9th year replaced close to $1,300 in sensors over two years. Small parts started falling apart. Could not use mid grade had to stay with Premium or got poor performance. Leather not soft and plushy even started to wear a lot.

Ok first off this isn't my car, it's my fathers, I am in transition to a new car and drive this car to and from school (100 mile commute) This car is reliable and has a near smooth ride but that's all it has going for it. The thing rattles like no other car I've owned. This includes the dash, all 4 doors, seats make squeaky noise, center console rattles when stopped. The one thing I like about it is the stereo is decent but any louder than normal voice volume and the doors rattle insistently. This car rattles more than my old 89' Toyota pickup 4x4. The car (when purchased) had an oil jelling problem and luckily it was a recall and Toyota fixed it no charge. Thought Toyota lasted but not this car.

When my new 2000 Acura TL arrived, I couldn't get comfortable in the driver's seat (6'2", 220 lb) so I canceled the deal and bought the Avalon XLS instead. Back then, I thought it was ugly and definitely a compromise. Now, it looks "classic" and the lines seem much cleaner, and it has been 100% trouble free, but too much is sacrificed for ride comfort. I found *huge* improvements by upgrading the shocks (KYB), tires (Michelin Exalto 225/50x16), and brake pads (Red Stuff)... and the roomy front seat has spoiled me for some otherwise very good cars.

As a single, middle aged female, I admit to having taken above average care of this car. But after eight years and 86,000 miles, I've not been out a penny on it other than routine maint. I still get regular compliments on it and when I say it's 8 years old, people say, "I thought it was brand new." Planning to keep it, I just had some surface blemishes repaired and am more thrilled than if it really were brand new, since I don't have a $500/mo. Payment to deal with and it's a pleasure to drive still-not fun, but pleasant. I'll have my fun with those $500 on something else.

Over the years the car has not done well, time to sell - the VSC is OFF, light on dash - will cost $600 to fix a $600 option, the gas gauge stops at 1/4 tank. 8 years of below average, constantly small items - trouble w/ stereo, woofer blew out, squeaks, had interoir parts replaced. In 2nd year of ownership, the leather peeled off steering wheel. That was replaced under warranty. Hopefully they got better, disappointed overall.

This car has been in my family for almost 8 years now and is still going strong. It rides and drives wonderfully, and the only problem we've had with it was with the automatic choke a couple years ago; we took it to our local Toyota dealer and had it fixed. The mileage is pretty good (about 23/city and 28/highway) for a car of its age. It has withstood rough roads and has over 170,000 miles on it (taken one trip to Disney World (16-ish hours total) and one trip to Savannah, GA (18-ish hours total) and was driven several miles to work and back most of the time with no problems). All in all, this car is a downright champion.

I have had this car for about 5 months now, absolutely love it! Fun to drive, reliable, I step on the gas and the pickup is great, comfortable leather seats, just a joy to drive! I thought I would like the heated seats better than I do, but I don't see what the big deal is really. I drive my car all over the state for my job and it performs flawlessly, unmatched Toyota quality. Mine had around 98k when I bought it but you could tell it had been taken care of. My speaker system is a bit flakey, the rear speaker is blown and two of the front speakers go in and out a lot, other than the speakers the car is great. Buy one and you won't regret it! Mpg is around 29-30 hwy and around 21 or so city.

Purchased brand new. Very roomy interior, especially in back seat. Very comfortable for local and distance driving. Excellent ACTUAL gas mileage: 24-26 mpg city & commuting; 26-32 mpg sustained hwy driving. Only problems in 7.5 yrs was a fuel pump that needed to be replaced after 4 yrs and the in-dash radio/CD player after 5 yrs. Have performed all scheduled maintenance at recommended intervals. Maintenance costs have been low: $725/yr over entire period owned; $900/yr during past 5 yrs, including replacement of timing belt at recommended 90K mileage. Best car I've ever owned. Will buy another this year.

I purchased my Avalon XL new from the dealership. I picked the silver color because it looks clean when it's dirty. The ride is very smooth. The interior is exceptionally quiet within the city, but the wind noise picks up on the highway and interstate. I purchased the 6yr/100,000 mile warranty with the vehicle. Toyota guaranteed if I never used the warranty I would receive a full refund at 100,000 miles. They refunded me a check for $1,187 2yrs ago. The paint still looks like new. The interior is excellent. The Avalon has enormous room. The dash forward design is genius. I've seen the latest model and they made it with more room. This is definitely the flagship of the Toyota brand vehicles.

Ok, we've officialy gone Toyota since GM dumped Oldsmobile (fools!). My Parents were considering Camry, but I wouldn't allow it as there are just too many. I found them an Avalon a few weeks ago & they instantly fell in love with it (had it home within 2 hours!). It doesn't handle like a big car at all & it's about the same size as the 92 Lincoln Continental that we had years ago. Mom loves the dash display that has the compass, date/time, and fuel economy info. I really like the JBL Sound System & the one-touch sunroof control. Dad's sold on Toyota; said his next car is going to be a Lexus as my younger sister will be well out of college by the time they get another car.

Since I purchased this vehicle back in Nov 99, I have never had a serious problem with the vehicle. I service it according to the manufacturers book, not the dealers. Vehicle runs smooth and quiet. Seat comfort is great. Have a small back problem and my previous vehicles always gave me a problem; however, the Avalon, no problem. On the exterior design I gave it a 7 because I do not like the exhaust system hanging low on the vehicle. I notice this on a lot of Toyotas. Other than that, I love the vehicle.

I have had this car for almost three months and have had problems with the suspension. So long as I am driving on smooth pavement, it is wonderful. On bumpy roads I feel like I'm rocking and rolling. The main complaint is that they say it is a five passenger car so long as the passengers don't weigh more than a pound. With Passengers in the back seat the car bottoms out, scraping the road when going over any bumps. Sadle enough,Toyota says this is "normal". I didn't know it was normal to drag the road in such an expensive car. Doing my research, I've come to realize that the Avalon has this problem and Toyota refuses to address it.They have compromised on the suspension.

This is a car I can imaginge driving 15 or 20 years from now and that never happened with the previous four.

The Avalon is an extremely quiet, great riding & driving car. It's comfortable, has good accelleration, and handles nicely in traffic. The interior is clean with enough techie features to give it the upscale feel of its Lexus siblings. Plenty of headroom and foot room, even for tall people, and even though I've never sat in the back I'm told it's very roomy even behind the driver with the seat all the way back. It's at the top of my list for my next new car.

This car is so good that I bought a 2002 Avalon XL with the leather luxury package for my wife. She is very pleased with her car. The car is very comfortable with the electric seats and lumbar support on the drivers side. Its appeal seems to be to older drivers who upgrade from the Toyota Camry as we did. I am waiting for the new 2005 Avalon as I am interested in buying anouther one. I hope Toyota does not lessen its quality or change its platform as it did with the Camry when they changed the model.

This is the best car I ever owned. Very affordable luxury - same size as Mercedes 230 or BMW 5 series in 2000 model without pricetag. I have owned 4 Camrys and moved up to the Avalon. I stand by the Toyota name in spite of the fact that I have 3 relatives who work for a domestice auto company which allows me to purchase vehicles at below dealer invoice. The fact is that the quality I pay for in the Toyota line is more than worth the down time and repair bills I incurred from the domestic cars I bought.

I used Edmunds.com for pricing info and got a GREAT deal. I do a LOT of highway driving and this car is perfect. There is pick up when I need to pass or go up a mountain and I've never been in a smoother riding vehicle and I have owned Lincolns, Buicks and Caddys. Everyone who rides in it compliments the interior styling then they feel the ride and love it as much as I do. It still turns heads too. Finding a used one is next to impossible so I guess most of the owners just don't want to give them up. I have 77,000 miles on it and I have never had any problems. I take excellent care of it and it looks brand new.

I wanted a used car and, after much searching, liked the looks of the Toyota Avalon best. But I didn't know anything about it's performance. So I looked it up on Edmunds. All I saw was how everyone "loved their 2000 Avalons." That sold me. Now I've joined the group. It's been 3 months, and every day I tell my husband how much I love my Avalon. Even my 21- year-old car-nut of a son likes it. The problems that a few people complained about don't even exist with mine. I bought the extended warranty, and have no worries about anything going wrong. It's a dream to drive and anyone who rides with me comments on what a great car it is.

Bought my 2000 Avalon XLS as a Toyota Certified Used 16 months ago with an Extended 100K Warranty and have enjoyed a very troublefree car. The Avalon is solidly designed and built with proven but conservative technology. The engine and transmission are smooth, quiet and capable. The Avalon's interior roominess is almost minivan like. The Avalon has a high roofline and minimal "tumblehome" with the side windows being much closer to vertical than most other contemporary sedans. This is why the Avalon body styling looks a little funky head on, the straight side glass being reminiscient somewhat of classic Rolls Royce sedans.

My 2000 avalon is an american car,Toyota is no longer japanese. The performance of this car above average. It has good power and acceleration. It is very comfortable and spacious.I havent had the car very long. This car could really use some interior inhancements.Riding on textured roads the inside rattles so bad you can not take peacful ride with the stereo off.The rattles are terrible.I have it at the dealership twice, they cant seem to quite the rattles. The car handles well, quite at highway speeds.Had to get the rotors turned. The car has only 38000 mi.The car accelerates abrutly out of turns.

My 2000 Avalon XLS is a pleasure to drive and to own. The stability of the ride and the quietness of the cabin are outstanding. The car is exceedingly reliable. I would like, however, to get better mileage. 16 MPG in town and 25.1 on the road is the best that I can get. The passenger power seat is somewhat disappointing. There is no lumbar support as in the driver's seat, and there are fewer adjustments than the driver's seat. Overall, this is a fine car, and I will look first to Avalon when I consider a new one.

It's very comfortable ROOOOOOMY !!!and very depandable I have only one electrical problem: Side airbag sensor mulfunction, I guess it's because is not made in Japan but in USA and Quality Control in States is not as tight as it is in Tokyo The SRS light start and keep blinking and I let my Toyota Dealer work on that. Other than that car is really great it really is a pleasure drive handles great on the road, well maybe brakes and audio system (XL-ONLY) could be better... Highly recommend to everyone !!!

The only option...will be GPS navigation and this is available in current Avalon models. FYI...I must be the only owner with factory mud guards (color matched). I think they are worth the money. After reading the reviews, I had to comment on those who gave less than average, i.e. especially the 4.6 rating. Where did you buy this one? It must have been from a salvage yard because you couldn't have brought it from a reliable and well respected Toyota dealership. I shopped for weeks before deciding on this car. Regarding the the roominess, reliablity, and performance this car gives you more than you can imagine. When we have family and friends ride with us they are totally shocked by the performance, style, and ride of this vehicle.

I purchased this car new in 2000 and was looking for a roomy, dependable mini-van alternative. Recently reaching the 50K mark I can honestly say that the car has been very enjoyable to own and absolutely trouble free. It has only been to the dealer one time for its 25,000 mile check-up which was uneventful. On long fully loaded trips I have averaged 28 mpg and has impressive passing power at highway speeds. The interior has held up better than expected, leather seats still look brand new. Climate control works great at any temperature and the “Dual Mode” option does a good job regulating different temperatures between the passenger and drivers seats.

Ever since i can remember there has always been one toyota in our garage. The 2000 Avalon XlS is our second avalon (96 Xls the first) and it is an amazing car. A strong powerful engine that can make any driver want to take it to the red line. But at the same time a great comfortable interrior and asethically pleasing to the eye. One of the smoothest rides out that makes it a pleasure to take on even the longest trips. I think for the price and the quality it should be any car lovers dream. If you are out to buy a new or used car i highly recomend this car. You will not be disappointed.

If only the bumpers were less prone to get nicked and scratched this might be THE perfect car. In some 37,000 miles, NO waranty trips to the dealer, original brakes and tires still pass State inspection. Nicwe acceleration, smoooooth mechanicals. Up to 32mpg on a road trip, decentr mileage around town. So quiet inside you can hold conversation in normal tone of voice at 80 MPH.

Two tall adult 6' fit in the back seat comfortably and three adults can fit in the back seat with no problem. I had to have my brakes replaced several times. Overall if given the choice I would buy the avalon again. I have taken several trips and the smooth comfortable ride makes the avalon a good choice. Would I would buy another avalon in the next few years? Definitely if the brakes were better. If the brakes are not better I may make a different choice.

The 2000 Toyota Avalon XLS is good but not perfect. I like the slightly boxy design. The fit and finish was almost perfect with the exception of one flaw. One of the trims pieces on the roof seam was dented when I tool delivery. On a car of this caliber, I would have liked to seen a better paint job since I began noticing chips in the paint almost right away. The interior is room and the trunk is downright spacious. The car currently has 33,000 miles and was just diagnosed with a defective ignition cylinder. One doesn't feel real confident when the key won't turn in the ignition. I hope that this will be an isolated incidence no more suprises.

This is the best car we have owned. We recently had twins, plus a 2 1/2 year old, and all of the carseats fit comfortably in the back. The truck holds a double stroller with plenty of room to spare. The engine has great acceleration and is very comfortable. One notable problem, the engine had a defect and blew out after 3 months, but the dealership repaired it, gave us a loaner, and extended our warranty.

This is the best car that I have owned. I bought the model with the 60/40 Front seats. It sits very comfortably for tall people(6'3")Plenty of leg room in the front and back. I love this car!

I LIKE AVALON.

The Toyota Avalon is the best car I have ever owned. It handles and rides like a $50,000 luxury car, but cost $20,000 less. The engine and transmission are exceptional. The roominess is amazing, and reliability is second to none. I get 28-30 MPG on the highway on regular gas. Fit and finish is perfect. Safety is very good, as a matter of fact, I owned a 1996 Avalon and was hit head-on by a truck at highway speeds. The car was a total loss, but I had minimal injuries thanks to the engineering of the body, the airbag, and seatbelts, everything worked perfectly. After the accident, I immediately bought the 2000 Avalon which I am driving now.

I didn't like it's looks at first, but I wanted a safe car for my wife. I have been very surprised with the quality of this car and it rides and handles well. I've driven trucks and SUV's my whole life so this is a small car to me but it's very comfortable.

When I first set my eyes on the car. I thought this is the ugliest car I have ever set my eyes on. But I drove it and I was sold. I was initially looking at the Acura TL, Audi A4, the new I30. But a family member asked me to drive the Avalon, I did and the rest is history. 50,000 miles and not one problem.

Never had a problem since I bought the car in 2000. Very comfortable and quiet. Good acceleration and mediocre brakes. Less than satisfactory gas mileage in city driving. Car rattles unlike near luxury car when driving over uneven surface. Suspension could be a little stiffer. Sound system could be a little better.

Car's interior, handling, quietness, leather, computer dash make the car a pleasure to drive and be in. Very reliable. Trunk is huge. More interior room than my es300 had.
