We test drove a truck and the salesmen told us that it had a leak in the muffler, which most salesmen would not say something is wrong with a vehicle, and also after we test drover the truck we told him the check engine light was on so he drove us across the road to the mechanic and had it checked out, we bought the truck later that day! They don't hide anything, great company!

You should know that you have a reliable, safe, vehicle that will go anywhere, everyday. My x-terra owes me nothing.Over 200,000 miles.still perky and strong.I have a 5 speed man.trans.and I've had to replace clutch @ about 130,000 miles.after driving lessons with 2 kids and towing a boat out of the water every weekend.I've only had a few issues through the years.A/C compressor failed after 100,000 mi.quick fix= removed belt and rolled down windows.Broken leaf spring, due to rust sand/salt is a challenge here in MA.Dealer replacement springs were about $325.local mech repaired+new shocks.DIY tune up's are a challenge to get the #5 spark plug out.*tip= after tune-up check that ALL spark plugs were replaced.honest repair men are rare. The only "issue I had was getting the "4wd"to disengage back to 2w drive.their's a sequence.drive 35mph in 3rd gear and shift out of 4wd.some times it takes awhile for it to go back to normal drive.Thats it for issues..AWESOME truck for snow, rough roads, hills, and trails. The only reason I'm getting rid of my xterra is that I cant keep up with the RUST spots.Mine started on the back hatch ,little blisters, and every year it spreads all over.Good thing I am so handy with bondo and primer paint finishing.I LOVE MY TRUCK.

I purchased this truck from a small used car lot about a year and a half ago. Rescued is more like it and I knew it . It would seem that the previous owner did not care for it too much. It is a risk you take buying used from any where. It had 142,000 on it so I took that chance. I knew that it would be a project. I have replaced the valve gasket, radiator and hoses, thermostat, steering pump, rear window sprayer (missing when bought), spark plugs, distributor cap with rotor and wires, drive belts, brakes, ac compressor, refurbished the electronic control module, and replaced various lights. I still want to replace the shocks and touch up the paint. It is not difficult to work on with room to do so. Not typical of most vehicles now. The cost of repairs have been reasonable. It has always started and never left me stranded. It is a tough truck in which I see was designed to keep going. Surprisingly, it can hold and tow a lot. Never stuck off road yet. I can park it and not be too worried about finding it upon return. It lives up to its moniker; all that you need. Nothing big but more than it appears. I love the outdoors and play rugby. I love my truck and look forward to all the places we will go.

Well, I bought my 2000 Nissan Xterra in 2003, shortly after my baby girl was born and I needed 4 doors instead of my extend cab suicide doors on my Silverado. I am going on 12 years owning and 200,000 miles. The cons-bad gas mileage, avg 12-14mpg, cold air intake gave me +1mpg. Really underpowered. Only thing is @ 145k my timing belt broke, supposed to change @ 125k anyway. Distributor went out @ 195k. Other than that, just normal maint wear and tear. I cannot really complain on cost of repairs since there have been so few.

I bought this car almost two years ago and have put 15,000 miles on it. It is great in snow and ice in 4 wheel drive mode. Easy to shift from 2 to 4 wheel drive system. The 3.3 liter V6 is adequate, not fast, but you don't get an SUV for speed. Valve gaskets had to be replaced at 154K. Only complaints; no dashboard clock and dashboard instruments are very dark. On a sunny day if you're wearing sunglasses you can't read them unless dashboard lights are turned on. Vehicle is very rugged. I actually think this 1st generation Xterra looks nicer than the 2nd generation. 4 full doors and great visibility make it more practical than the FJ Cruiser. I would highly recommend this vehicle. Since last posting my review I had engine overheating repeatedly and thought the vehicle needed a new thermastat. Turned out there was a crack in the head gasket. I was given alternatives of a $2000 repair job or "we can put in some sealant and half the time that works." For thirty dollars I had them put in the sealant and ever since then, about six months ago, the car runs perfectly and no longer overheats.

Love my xterra

I recently bought a used 2000 xterra. It had about 118,000 miles on it, and is 12 years old, but still runs great. I love the way it looks, and drives. Gas mileage isn't the greatest but I don't do that much driving so it's ok. I did have to replace the distributor, which was about 350.00 but other than that it's been great, and I love it! I've had it for 6 months and still love it like I did when I bought it. They didn't have the option that mine is but it is a SE automatic 4x4

its a 4 speed automatic wasnt in selection but its great

i love my xterra she has a bumpy ride but its a truck frame so it is designed to be tough not smooth it runs like a beast but as with most v6 suvs it feels underpowered on acceleration up hills on freeway onramps but if you give it a good amount of gas pedal push it will downshift and get up there it looks great to me definitely distinctive the interior is a little bland but well built and comfy seats sit low in front so it feels like sittin in a sporty car thats lifted 10" because you can see above most things blind spots are minimal which is good it has alot of storage space and is well built and fun to drive especially off road where it loves to be great suv i would buy again

Its very reliable and great for your money. I highly recommend this vehicle for anyone that uses highway miles a lot and desires to put lots of mileage on a car. I have been driving mines forever and I love the car....Its has exceeded its expectations at 354,000 miles...Unbelievable!!! Im passing it down to my son now.

My wife bought her xterra brand new in 2000. have had some minor issues with it till it hit 250000 and had to have the tranny rebuilt. Must say that is awsume. having an overheating issue now and trying to track it down. usually when the Air is on it overheats but have not had any other issues to speak of. Love this Vehicle. Will buy another someday when this one goes to the car graveyard lol. it didn't give me an option for saying its an Automatic just manual.

I bought this truck 9 months ago with about 149,000 miles. It now has about 154,000 miles on it. Only had one problem besides a couple minor things. Even though it was never a real problem nor was it noticeable, the transmission had to be rebuilt. Also had to replace the clutch from normal wear. It was the first time it was replaced. Very reliable and has amazing offroad capabilities. Poor gas mileage though. I only get an average of 13-15mpg depending on how and where I drive. Other Xterras tend to do better I think. It is also a little sluggish. Also I am 6'5" and I fit just fine in the drivers seat.

We have owned our Xterra since 2000 when we bought it new. Now, just rolling over 180,000 miles, it has never been in the shop for more than a check-up. Routine oil changes and new plugs, wires, and fluids at 100,000 miles is all that has ever been done. Recently had the air go out, but after ten years and 180,000 miles I have no complaints with the build quality on this one! If you're looking at buying one used, I would not be intimidated by high miles. Certainly mine has been super-reliable so far, and I would not hesitate to take it on long trips. Super reliable!

We purchased it with 68,000 miles and now it has 135,000 miles and runs very well. We do have occasional issues that are costly (fuel pump, fuel pump wiring harness, brake work, shocks) but they are going to be problematic with any car with these miles. It feels a bit underpowered when we have our family of 4 in it but still maintains freeway speeds without problems. We have loved this car so far.

I bought this vehicle for it's looks a few weeks after its first introduction into US market in 1999 and I have to say that it has served my family extremely well. My wife primarily drives this truck. Other than normal maintenance, A/C compressor was the only major thing I had spent money on in it's fist seven years. Is being TEN YEARS now going ELEVEN that i've owned this truck. It has about 190000 miles and still running strong as ever. I will buy another one if Nissan ever decide to make it to accommodate a third row seat.

I loved my 2000 Nissan xterra in silver it had about 190,000 miles on it when I recently totaled it in a accident on Thursday. I also had the problem of the airbags not going off but overall it was a great truck I'm hoping to get another one with my insurance money and buy one with lower mileage. It was tons of fun I miss mine so much.

Bought new in 2000, before wife and kid. Most reliable ever, currently 180k miles. Need only routine maintenace. No fancy bells and whisles, just a simple SUV that can take on almost anything. However, with another kid on the way, I may finally have to part with it.

I have owned my Nissan Xterra since I bought it new in 2000. I have not had any problems at all mechanically. I have the oil changed every 3000 to 5000 miles. The only thing that has been replaced a couple of times has been the battery. Other than that it has been a great vehicle. I am even thinking about buying a 2008 or 2009 when I'm ready to buy another vehicle. I've been totally happy with my Xterra the past 8 years. I have read that some people have had problems with rust forming on the exterior. I noticed some rust that appeared to form in the paint but with occasional waxing it inhibited any corrosion. Overall the best vehicle I've owned.

You get exactly what you pay for with the Xterra. It's hardy, functional, cool looking and reliable. Servicing really started at 125,000 kms at which time most bits started to come apart. Keyless entry, shocks, clutch, muffler, power windows, a/c all needed either partial or full replacement. I did miss some of the luxuries of upscale models. Overall a great buy.

What a great little SUV.

My wife and I purchased this Xterra almost 7 years ago (when we had no kids) and it was worth the price. We finally paid it off and it has been a very reliable vehicle. It is very comfortable on long and short trips with the family. A family of 4 will fit comfortably. As I am now finding out, 3 in the back seat is a little too snug. Other than that I think 7 years ago we made a good decision that we still own today with over 81,000 miles on it. Other than one recall from the dealership, we have had no problems at all. In the future we probably would be better off with 3rd row seating. Other than that I would keep it.

I found this vehicle very fun to drive and quite capable both on road and off road. I used the car for everything from road trips, to LA commuting, to Rocky Mountain offroading and it did great. The gas mileage left a bit to be desired, but to be fair, mine was lifted with oversized tires. I was recently in a 20+ car pile up that unfortunately totaled my Nissan, but let me tell you, that car crashed incredibly well. My girlfriend and i were both able to walk away from the accident uninjured. The car took several high speed impacts from other vehicles and even a few walls quite softly. We both believe its safety features saved us. It really was an great car both in driving and in crashing...

I have taken my Xterra from where the waves crash on the shore to the top of snowy mountains. I have yet to get stuck and I have had no maintenance issues. It tows it hauls and is nice to just ride in. My favorite places is to take it out on the beach at the Outer Banks of NC and to the drive, drop down the back seats, lay out some blankets and enjoy a good show.

I am glad that Nissan no longer uses this V6 engine when they introduced the 2005 model. My engine problems began at 65 to 70k miles. I had to replace the Knock sensor that is located deep inside the block. The dealer wanted $1200 to replace; I used a non-dealer where the cost to repair in the book understates the labor hours. The timing belt won't last for 105K miles; they now recommend every 60k that costs another several hundred dollars. Thank god my exhaust manifolds have held up even though my dealer said they needed to be replaced for $1200 (other mechanics said they were ok.) Nissan uses a "plastic" bolt on the ac compressor sprocket. Mine eventually "popped" off.

I'm had the xterra for 5 years, 93K miles. So far so good. Nothing has ever broken down, and it still runs like new. I cant ask for anything more. Go anywhere capability, good wear on the brakes. Brakes are awsome. Changed the oil every 2500 miles, using castro syntec 5w50. I cant say enough about the build quality. A little bouncy on the but upgraded the suspension with a tokico kit and it rides well. GREAT CAR111

It has given me relativly little problems but the normal wear and tear fixes ( brakes, batteries and tires). I have taken long road trips and the gas milage, tho not ideal is not as bad as I would have thought. I can drive from LA to SJ on 1 tank of gas.

Until I hit 100K on the odometer I thought I owned the best SUV available for the price. Snapped a timing belt at 100,300. Nissan has given me no releif, owners manual calls for replacement of belt at 105K. Replaced engine with a 30k used engine. Both engines had cracks in exhaust manifold. A lemon of an engine. Some engine parts a clearly sub-standard

When i got tired of my loud, hard to deal with jeep wrangler I was looking at the grand cherokees but fell in love with the style of the nissan Xterra! I love my 2000 Xterra. Get one equipped with V6 and 4WD. Also be sure to get the power package, I noticed some have the manual roll up windows (like my wrangler did) I do not miss my wrangler like I thought I would. I love my Nissan Xterra (solar yellow with over sized tires and greay leather seats make it my dream vehicle!) Test drove a 2000 jeep grand cherokee which cost $4,500 more than the Xterra and had basic cloth seating. Very happy with my purchase so far!

I am or better yet "WAS" a die hard 4- runner fan. Now after the luxury craze took over our beloved suv's I had to look else where to replace my 1993 4- runner with the same ruggedness that an suv should have. The Xterra fit the mold perfectly. The Xterra has been everything my older 4-runner was and more.

live in Kalamazoo, MI; purchased from MA. It's been as far as (MA,) NV and FL; of course never a problem. Actually, when I bought Nissan Sentra in 1990; I'm now on my FOURTEENTH YEAR without any repairs thanks to Nissan. Enjoyable to drive, backseat riders like the comfort. Durable interior, running boards (pipes) that absorbed being T-boned, starts every winter, fast HOT heating system, decent gas mileage for SUV- just a great truck. I have stick-shift & 4WD; winter driving no problem. Tows like it's not towing.

I would not recommend buying a nissan xterra. The plastic bumper turns white, the buttons on the radio come loose, the paint on the buttons to the radio lasted 2 years, shift gear broken, driver seat uncomfortable, entire car not quality made. I can't wait to trade in to buy a toyota. This is my first nissan, I miss my toyota.

I've driven my XterraSEV64x4 from Atlanta, GA, to San Francisco, CA and back, TWICE. I've driven my X from San Francisco to Tahoe for skiing trips, up to Napa Valley numerous times, all over the Sunshine State from Pensacola on over to Jacksonville, Gainesville, Orlando and Miami and back numerous times. I've driven up in the north Georgia mountains in Helen, GA. Cruised throught the quaint germantowns, as well as the crazy rocky trails up to Amicalola Falls.

July 2004 will be my 5-year anniversary of owning my 2000 Xterra XE 4WD V6. I am on my 3rd set of front brakes and original rear brakes. I replaced the stock BF Goodrich Long Trails at about 65,000 miles with Goodyear Forteras. I replaced the battery around the same time and have just recently noticed the upper radiator hose has been leaking coolant under pressure. The body still looks good although the plastic has faded over the years. The interior still looks great. I'm averaging around 14- 15 MPG. Overall I’m very pleased but would not buy another Xterra just because I don’t use or need it’s off road capability.

I love this SUV! The look is GREAT and seeing other XTerra owners around town makes you feel part of click! We live in CO and go to the mtns frequently. The 4X4 capability is great over rocks and thru creek beds. Long distance travel is nice but a little cramped! My complaint, as is most peoples, NO POWER!! I was wise and found a 5spd and love it. It's great on the hwy going up the mtns. Maybe in a couple yrs I'll buy the supercharged version! I would recommend it to anyone!!

This truck provides an excellent view of the road. I have the four cylinder (my fault) and the rear wheel drive (also my fault) I disgusted myself when I discovered that for 20.00 more a month, I could have had the V6, 4wd, power everything truck of my dreams. Don't skimp, or don't buy. Believe me, power door locks, 4WD and extra power would be worth another 100.00 a month.

Good truck if you don't want to use it to tow anything. The design is nice and it is very capable in 4WD. At 140 horses, it just doesn't have enough power. The gas mileage (18-15MPG) should be better. No problems mechanically. Looks nice and design features (cargo netting, rear power point, roof rack, etc.) are useful if you are an out-doors type.

Having a vehicle that accommodates my table. I literally took my table with me in trying out each one. I love my Xterra! There is plenty of room for me in the front and passengers like the stadium seating in the back. The rear seats are versatile! But they rattle when you drive. My airbags didn't work in an accident. My seatbelt worked and left a red mark on my neck and chest. I have had a recurring problem with the seatbelt light coming on. I have tried to repair it several times. The roof rack would smack against the roof and was really annoying, after the rubber tabs blew off. Of course, the gas mileage is not the best with any SUV, but, since the gas prices have gone up, I feel like I spend most of my time at the pump.

I purchased the 2000 XE 4WD 6 new in July of 2000. I have had no major problems and have gotten excellent service at the Nissan Dealership when a small problem needed addressing. Overall I rate the ride and comfort to be slightly above average though a bit Noisy on the Highway. I was a little disappointed that no factory leather option was available at the time. This would have added more to the cheap looking interior. Sound System is SUBPAR. Overall it's a solid vehicle.

I bought mine new at first release of 2000 model year. Sole owner. Marathon road trips, city traffic, towing and commuting. Wonderful balance between interior space, utility, horsepower, gas mileage, etc. Family of four traveling regularly. I own the SE version because I don't believe in power everything. I've added power door locks/security system and a towing hitch. Basic maintenance is all I've had to do. Bang for buck, it's on top of the heap.

Has been great in the Iowa winters and provides a comfortable, secure ride. It has all of the creature comfort features you need without over doing it. I bought the 2000 XE V6 4WD and I am impressed with the reliablity and ride after +60K miles. Sure, Gas Mileage could be better, but what are you going to do. My X has capably handled several snowy winters in the last few years and annual trips out on the beach in North Carolina. It has "passable" comfort for long trips, but it certainly isn't a Benz...Then again, there are no SLK's pulling up to the surf on the beach! I've had a couple of little rattles and squeeks, but overall, I am pretty impressed.

Good buy for what you get. When they mean "no frills," this is exactly what you get. No luxury appointments, but I wasn't going for that. Needed something to haul two large dogs, but didn't cost a bunch. I won't buy another one of these, as the ride feels as if you are on a buckboard wagon - could have had a better suspension installed.

The Xterra is perfect for our one-baby, two-dog, surf-board, and kayak carrying lifestyle. Even towed out a stuck Cherokee once. (4WD, no less!) The paint job (white) was really bad. Warranty work was done to repair serious rust below the radiator. Also look for rust spots wherever there is s spot weld. Also, there is a mysterious rattle on the front passenger side that the dealer was unable to fix. Overall, we like the vehicle, however, I recommend hunkering down and taking a close look under the grill at the paint below the radiator and in other hidden areas for signs of rust.

I have really enjoyed my Xterra with a few exceptions. Am I the only one who leaves the lights on an repeatedly drains the battery. I would expect the lights to go off automatically to prevent this. The fact it doesn't happen is a huge design flaw in my opinion. I have been stuck on numerous occassions because I forgot to turn my lights off. And the battery loses its juice quickly--in 1-2 hours. My front tires are always dirty. I was told it is dust from the brakes. Who knows. I find the Xterra to be comfortable and don't understand other criticism on this point.

I live in the mountains and the XTerra's made my life so much easier. Mudslide? What mudslide? Snow? No problem. Could use a bit more power to climb the hills, but turning off the overdrive gives continued power and saves the brakes on the downhill. I also make 500-mile road trips to see family and we always choose to take the X. Smooth ride. Plenty of space for people and cargo. Mileage isn't bad on highway. Friends love it. I've owned my Xterra for 3 years now and what an all-around no nonsense performer. I live in the mountains of Colorado and have had it sideways at angles that make you think you're sitting in the passenger's lap. Been over snowy passes, muddy back-roads, even bumped a guard rail at a pretty good clip on a slick, icy road, and it just knocked it out of alignment a bit. I've had kayaks, canoes, skis, boards and other misc. on top of it and I've been nearly ocean to ocean in it. If you take care of it, it'll take care of you!

The most surprising element about the Xterra is the smooth ride. Most SUV's can be bumpy but Nissan builds the Xterra with rubber mounts around the frame and what a difference that makes. The Xterra is high up, higher than the Grand Cherokee and the standard runner boards makes it feel and look more rugged.

This thing was trouble as soon as i got it. I had maybe 5K on it when the A/C compressor goes on me. Little things in the car were breaking rather easily, such as the handle to move the angle of the seat. The distributor cap craked on me at 13K and then the distributor then went 2k after that. I was left stranded on the highway twice because of this. The 4wd would not work properly all the time. The dealership was not very helpfull either. Over all i had a very bad experience with the truck, the dealership and Nissan all together....i will never buy Nissan again.

Rides like a truck, seats are uncomfortable. Poor fuel milage for such a weak engine. "ABS" & "BRAKE" light come on occasionally. Dealer insists that there is nothing they can do unless light is "on" when they check it. Try getting that light to come on during scheduled maintenence. Rugged good looks on the outside but lacks ride comfort inside and out.

Good overall, but I've been recently slapped with a big service bill, my left rear axel seal leaks oil on the brake shoes ($275) and the manifold leaks radiator fluid on the timing belt ($925). Disapointing for a newer car. The use of plastic on the interior moving parts is also a poor place to cut corners on manufacturing costs.

This SUV has been nothing but reliable for me over the past 2 years I have owned it. I haven't had to take it in but one time for warrenty work, my CD player stopped working, but they replaced it after they got one in stock. It rides nice (truck like) and has very good visibility (especially from the back seats). The engine is a little underpowered though and some of the switches are placed in hard to reach places (cruise control on/off and rear wiper switch). All in all a great SUV for the price and with the superchargers on the newer 2002 models the power problem will be fixed.

This is the first vechicle I have bought that after about 1 year I wasn't tired of it. I plan on keeping this one until it wears out, then I buy another.

Everything I need, nothing I don't.

Killer vehicle. A little light on the power, but still a blast to drive. Manual transmission makes all the difference. Gas mileage bites the butt a little, but highway driving to/from school on weekends will do that. Sweet looks (better than the 2002, I think) and no frills, no nonsense approach.

Who needs leather and wood grain dash?! It's a 4x4 dang it. Our Xterra is great. Plenty of room for our family and gear. We've been up to the mountains, the beach and around town. I like that it's very different looking than it's competition too.

I purchased my 2000 Xterra one month after they first hit the streets (July 1999). So I probably have one of the most driven Xterras out there (About 48,000 miles). It's been a great vehicle. No problems what so ever. I love it!

Should have known when I bought the cheapest sport ute that it wouldn't last long. It was great for the first year and a half, but now all the plastic bits & bobs are starting to break: the plastic rivets that hold the cloth to the back of the seat, the plastic panel on the hatch back, the arm rest/cd holder. Oh well, I bought it to take camping and its never let me down on our adventures in the wild.

This vehicle looks great BUT the 2000 model is severely lacking in interior design. I have had my XTerra in the local shop close to 30 times in the past year. It took about 7 visits just for them to do an alignment, 4 visits to replace the intake manifold, 3 visits to replace the window seals on both of the front windows. So on and so forth.

This car is not a sports car or fun around town grocery getter. This car is tough and "all business". I've yet to get it stuck and believe me I've tried. Acceleration on the road from a dead stop is my only complaint. It's perfect for the outdoor adventure guy and light work around the house. I've halled all material to build my fence in the back, all my bikes for triathlon and mountain biking, and it carries all the camping gear you need for a month! Go for it.

If you’re looking for a SUV that you can actually take off road then this is your vehicle. Mine has 45,000 miles and has had no major problems. The ride is a little stiff but makes up for it in off road capability. The interior leaves a little to be desired. Engine seems a little sluggish when trying to pass at highway speeds but more than capable for around town driving. Towing capability is pretty impressive for this class vehicle.
