I purchased it used in 2005 for a decent price with relatively low mileage and all the bells and whistles. I drove it for 10 years with very little mechanical issues, including no issues with the coils that others have written about. I kept up the normal maintenance, used premium gasoline, and made sure to get regular oil changes. I really loved this car, I loved driving it, and was not looking forward to letting it go, but by 10/27/15 I was starting to think of getting a new vehicle as I was getting older and getting in and out of the car was getting more difficult, and putting 42 pound bags of cat litter in and out of the trunk was also becoming taxing. However, some moron in a Dodge Ram Truck took the name of his vehicle too literally, and t-boned my Maxi, totalling her out. Sad end to a very reliable and fun car that I was looking forward to passing on to someone who needed a car.

I loved and hated my maxima. Lots of power, roomy and comfortable, but tons of problems. Fuel gauge was off, ignition coils went bad, and it randomly died on me on the freeway- where people were doing 80 and I had no place to pull over. This was during the three day period I owned it. Car met its demise when I was taking a drive one night and there was a cow... in the middle of the road. Apparently somebody in Nevada thought it was a good idea to create "open range". The brakes on the car were bad and I didn't see it in time. Car was no longer drivable, but I walked away. Reliable? No. Safe in an accident? Very.

+PROS:Looks GREAT inside/out, FUN TO DRIVE, and i get on the highway and never have to slow down, i floor it and im already caught up to traffic. The FOLD-IN side-mirrors help avoid hit-and-run parking lot drivers. -CONS:The suspension is so/so, the ride is just as harsh as a school bus as far as suspension, and its hard to block the sunlight sometimes, My check Engine light would NOT go off no matter how well the car was running, even after i replace the parts the obd reader told me to because The COIL PACKS&O2sens must be original manufactured, meaning mainly dealer parts but some websites have them at wholesale prices from the factory. OTHERWISE the light wont go off even with no faults

After driving around my parents cars during my four initial driving years, I felt it was time for my own. After some extensive research, I decided on the Maxima. This car has been nothing but reliable and really fun. It has ample passing power and still turns heads at 11 years old. Can't get enough of it and would recommend it to anyone. Also --- At 6'2'' I do just barely fit....

I put 75k miles on my Max in the first 3 years, no probs other than ignition coils. 28k miles in the next SIX years, only prob has been an O2 sensor (front $$$). This Max has simply been EXTREMELY reliable and FUN (I won't say how fun). This was the last Max made in Japan, I can't speak for US made models.

Only one coil pack, an O2 sensor, muffler and a starter is all I have ever replaced in 10 years. It's been a great car. I have to get rid of it because I am driving 100+ per day and need ultimate reliability. I have the 5- speed and get 30.25 MPG doing 65 MPH highway driving. Small rust spot on right-side of truck and driver-side wheel well. Brakes lasted me 75K miles and I'm still on the original rotors.

I bought this car in 2001 because (1) the old Sentra died and (2)the test drive of Honda Accord and Toyota Camry at that time were not too good. This car has been so reliable, comfort, and it moves as expected. When stop at up- hill, it does not slid down even tiny bit. When speed up, it picks up right within half second. I have more children now and need a van to carry them but I can't find another good car to replace this dear one!

I bought this car a year ago because I heard Nissan are good cars sense then I had to replace spark plugs and compact because of vibration, alternator, now radiator is not keeping any water in it, it stalls out when I'm at a traffic light. I now have a bad taste in mouth concerning this car and on tire time at a $150.00 a piece

I drove a manual 1991 Maxima that got totaled after 219,000 miles, so I bought the manual 2000 right after. It's zippy, agile, smooth, and quiet. My commute is an hour a day, so I'm happy to have a comfortable and reliable car. I get about 300-330 miles per tank. I bought my car in 2007 from a guy who took very good care of it. But in the past three years, I've had to replace the front wheel axle boot, the clutch hydraulic line, and the clutch itself. After ten years, the last didn't surprise me. The O2 sensor gives false readings and has had to be re-set. A friend of mine says to expect to pay about $100 in repairs for each year the car is old, and so far, that's right on target

This car wouldn't go 50 mph. Just dogged out. I changed plugs hoping for a fouled plug. no such luck. frightened to death of going to Nissan dealer after being slammed for ignition coil packs. $2000.00 I proceeded to local Autozone and asked Manager Dave of any possible symptoms. I had a bottle of typical injector cleaner. He told me to put the other back and buy Lucas fuel injector cleaner so I did. I drove down the local I 90 thruway 50 miles. This stuff had this 230 horse Maxima screaming again. I could not believe it. Everybody, before to start replacing all kinds of hopeful parts, spend $5.99. You might have the same luck. Again Lucas Fuel Injector cleanr. This stuff works. Big savings!

I bought this car with 47000 miles and have had nothing but issues since. I first replaced the MAS, and have since replaced both front ball joints and axles, air conditioner clutch pulley, water pump, brakes, and still have many issues including water leaking in from mysterious places, sputtering upon cold start, and my cd player is also very sketchy. This was my dream car, but I now wish that I had never purchased it. I would have never dreamed that I'd have put over $2500 into repairs in two years while still being under 90000 miles.

This is an excellent vehicle. I bought new in March 2000 and have not been disappointed. First car I've owned for 10+ years and drives as good as the day I bought it. In all categories the Maxima has surpassed my expectations - power, acceleration, reliability, comfort, looks are all an A+. Can't think of a better car to turn over to my son next year when he starts driving. Only gripe is that it goes through brake pads pretty frequently.

The car runs much better than I expected, pover and delivery is exceptional. Is an se. Model so the suspension is a little stiffer but you know that going into it.

I purchased this car with the idea that I would be obtaining a fun to drive and reliable car. It delivered well on performance, the VQ30 engine is very responsive and extremely smooth and the gearing of the 4 spd. auto transmission is pretty well suited to my sometimes spirited driving style. The ride and handling of of the Max is great; it was smooth enough to drive long distances yet firm enough to take you through the corners, despite it being the GLE model designation. The style is simple yet it works - but thats where it stops because as of recently (The past year or so) I have not been able to catch a break when it came to mechanical issues which is the biggest downfall of the 00 Max.

After driving a 95 f150 for a while it was a pleasure to drive this car, the fuel mileage was way better, and the performance was outstanding. My only complaint is that it doesn't look the part. the "Bose" sound system is incredible. i wish we had bought the traction control for it cause i don't even go mid throttle sometimes and the wheels just spin away from all the low end torque. This car is an excellent daily driver after driving a 3 ton brute every where. But i would highly recommend this car for anyone who wants a thrill, with an above average fuel economy.

Now looking to replace the best car I ever owned! 103k and was still running as strong as the day I drove it off the lot. Normal wear and tear issues. Tires and brakes seemed to need replaced alot..could just be me. Fun to drive, loved everything about it.

Supremely comfortable and powerful car. Brilliant interior design features. Quiet on the road. Factory fault is loss of one cylinder intermittently on hot start - before buying one make sure you hot start it ten times and drive a short distance each time. The cylinder loss is shown by engine vibration especially up hills or on throttle. It can last up to 30 minutes and is the ONLY fault I have had in 120,000 miles.

My mom bought this car brand new in '99 and took gr8 care of it. I got it on my 16th birthday in '05. It had 48,000 miles on it and apart from normal wear and tear items, no repairs were necessary. I've loved this car even before I got it. The look of the car was what got me first. It had sleek lines and absolutely beautiful pearl white paint. Then inside, the leather is pristine and the controls are very accessible. All my friends loved the car too. The car currently has 108,000+ miles (college and back) and so far, I've only had to replace the radiator, o2 sensor, MAF sensor, alternator, front and rear struts, and a rebuilt transmission. I plan to keep this car till the wheels fall off!!!

Bought this car new in December, 1999, 5-spd manual. Changed oil every 3,000 miles, maintained according to dealer and Nissan requirements. Did slip on maintenance a few times; but car never had issues as described by other owners. Car driven as daily commuter and for long trips, driving was a dream; "drove it like I stole it"! My baby is now hitting close to 10 years old and now having some issues. Tiny oil leak, bottom of engine somewhere leave a couple of drops every time I park and transmission getting whiny. But still runs as strong as day driven off show room floor.

And again the engine light is telling me to be prepared to spend lots of money come inspection time. Well, the die has been cast and the Maxima will have a new home by then. It will NOT be replaced by another Nissan product.

Transmission had to be replaced and coils went out, thankfully during the warranty. Does fine today, except for a few things. The SES light is always lit for evap problems. I've had this Maxima for almost ten years and have replaced the MAF, an O2 sensor, front axle, and three out of six ignition coils. The coils are easy to replace on your own (especially coils 2, 4, and 6) Anything that's ever broken on it didn't leave me stranded on the road! Overall, this is the most reliable car I've ever owned. It's still quiet as a mouse and rides great. It still gets terrific gas mileage and I run it on 89 octane.

Just a heads up to some of you experiencing rough running when cold or TCS light coming on. Three different dealerships couldn't solve the problem. Finally a small private auto repair shop solved the problem. It was two coils AND the intake manifold had a severe vacuum leak throwing off the timing. The coils alone did not solve the problem. Got the coils from Autozone where they are backed for 4 months if they go bad. If you read these entries...coils are a common problem. I would love this car otherwise with 145,000 on it.

I was the original owner of this vehicle. With regular oil changes every 3,000 miles, this car has held up very well. I had to replace the fan assembly because the bearings went out on one of the fans. Nissan would not replace just the bad fan which cost me about $400 more than it should have. I lost a key, because as previously mentioned the plastic top part of the key broke. I have also had the throttle body cleaned 3 times which has made a huge difference in performance every time. I have 180,000 miles total on this car and would not hesitate to purchase another. The downside is, the base price for the Maxima has gone up $8000 since 2000.

I'm at 151k miles on this 2000 SE model and still love this car. Great speed, comfort, and looks. I just recently encountered the coils issue that will need repair but otherwise it's been a GREAT car. At 6'4" tall, I've had plenty of leg room and good back support on long rides. I don't recommend Z-rating tires on the car though as you can wear them out quickly and at $250 a tire to replace, regular tires will do the trick for this speed and handling.

My car has 191,000 miles and she's still purring. Most reliable car I've ever owned. I am astounded at the people on here who spent $600-$700 dollars on ignition coils. Yes, four of mine have been replaced, but it's as simple as a couple screws and a plug. I got mine for $50/ea. and installed them myself. I'm no mechanic. I'll drive this car till the engine dies, and honestly I don't see that happening for a long time. Great car, and if you're here you're thinking of buying one. My suggestion is absolutely do it... you'll never regret it.

I owned this car for 5 years and put about 100,000 miles on it. I absolutely loved this car. It has a cute exterior, and the performance is spectacular. The inside is roomy enough to fit 4 large adults comfortably, and the trunk had plenty of space for all of my camping gear. The 02 sensor was replaced and the tires cost a small fortune, but other than those expenses and regular maintenance (brake replacement, oil changes, etc.), this car was dependable. I commute a long way to work and owned this car for a long time and I never got tired of driving it.

Grown kids refer to it as the green goblin. It's a nice solid, if overpowered car. Expensive repairs over the long haul (e.g. MAF, coils, muffler, gas vent canister, ball joint, drive shaft boots). Bought this car from another Maxima enthusiast. Have some upgrades. Sway bars on the front and back. 2004 Maxima front brakes which gave it larger rotors. KN intake system. Love the 5 speed. Smokes both front tires for along as I want. Face it, I got a good one!! Cruises nicely at 100 mph and has plenty left. I replaced the front struts and tinted the windows. With proper maintenance this car will last. I did replace 2 coils and a starter but so what. No problem with anything else. I have seen some very expensive repair bills. I believe some of the people need to shop around because they are paying WAY TOO much.

Purchased new SE as a demo with 7k miles. There weren't many choices for a sporty 4 door with a manual tranny. The newly lengthened '00 was bigger than an A6 or 5xx BMW and cost much less. It has lots of legroom and the leather interior is still holding up even with two kids. After 8 years it is still fun to drive and comfy on road trips. With 100k miles I get 24/28 running 89 fuel. I drive more gently now. The exterior has held up pretty well even with occasional modifications in the parking lot. Because of the reliability, I won't consider a new Maxima to replace my '00 unless they include a FREE 100k bumper to bumper warranty.

Bought in 2005, with 70,000 miles, as a good compromise between power and economy. Overall, have been dissatisfied with the experience. I have replaced 2 sets of brakes, and they have begun to make noise again. Suspension has aged poorly, especially in rear, transmission slips (and is more to fix than the car is worth to me). I have put a lot of highway miles on the car (60,000), and it has not taken them well. Fortunately, I installed an expensive aftermarket stereo, which drowns out most of the road, wind, and mechanical noises the car makes. Requires premium fuel for not-so-snappy performance. I have also had to replace coils, radiator, and thermostat. Engineering is mediocre at best.

This is an update of an earlier review of my 2000 Maxima. I've owned it now for 3 1/2 years and I have to say that overall, it is the best car that I have ever owned. Objectively speaking, this is a quality car, with few problem issues. Yes, I have had to spend $700 to replace the ignition coils (as mentioned by many 2000 Maxima owners), plus another $250 or so to replace an O2 sensor. However, overall, it has been a very good value and near-luxury in execution. It now has 120,000 miles on it and the engine is as strong as ever. It needs minor bodywork, but I have decided that I will get that done, as I plan to drive this baby for another 3 years.

I got a great deal on this car and I guess I know why. Being a mechanic, I can tell you these cars have problems not worth fixing. On the 2000-2003 Maxima, the computers give faulty signals saying sensors aren't functioning properly. After manually checking each sensor to determine that the mass-airflow sensor needed to be replaced and not the O2 sensors, I replaced that. In addition, the O2 and cooling sensors will go and they're $200 each for parts and there are 12 total (6 cooling, 6 O2). And that won't fix it. I've now ran all electrical/computer test and the only way to fix it is to take parts off one that runs and put them on mine. Imagine the cost for a non mechanic.

As soon as I drove it, I knew it was the car for me. I had previously owned 4 Accords and did not care for the current Accord's looks. The Maxima was more plain but had distinctive looks also such as tail lights. Love the power and rides like a much larger car. Great gas mileage from a performance oriented V6. We get 25 mpg in town and have gotten 32 on the road. Lots of room and the trunk holds LOTS of luggage and vacation souvenirs. Leather has aged very well and the Bose sound system is awesome. Make sure you find one that has been maintained. We had to replace the sunroof (well over 1K) and recently the starter. No coil problems, yet, at 88K miles. My wife stole it from me!

Fun car to drive and own. Lots of power when you need it. A very comfortable cruiser. Quality is something to be desired. Maxima has 190 kms. Have had to replace maf, o2 sensors, struts, rotors, and tranny under warrantee. Tranny is now clunking again from 1st to 2nd. Why does nissan build rotors on a new car that are to the min thickness ? My toyota with 190 kms I've only had to replace a block heater and tires, thats it.

This car has been a high performer. The car is 7.5 years old and has 97000 miles on it. It feels like it still has a lot left. I can't imagine why people pay twice the price for european cars. However, the exhaust (not just the muffler and pipes) system is a little too complex to be as reliable as it should be. The Dealer told me to use premium gas, but could not convey the technical reasons. So maintenance costs are higher than a Camry or Accord, but this car performs a lot better.

But too many reliability problems beyond usual maintenance... replaced coils, MAF, starter, front springs, shifter solenoid, and rear calipers so far. I bought my Nissan Maxima GLE in 2006 it had 94k. Overall the car is great but it does have some problems. So far I had to replace my starter (which is to be expected), the O2 sensor, had trouble with throttle control motor relay and power windows control switch. The car does not perform as well during cold season. It takes a long time to warm up, engine throttle and transmision do not respond as fast, power windows are slow during cold weather. Rides pretty good but the trunk ratells while driving. Gas mileage could be better.

I bought my 2000 Maxima used @ 39000 miles. Fell in love with it right away because of the smoothness of the ride and power of the VQ engine that has 222 hp. Good choice in getting the factory extended warranty because the ignition coils and MAF sensor needed to be replaced after I used an 89 octane gas. The engine knocks if you use gas less than 91 octane. Handling is inspiring on winding roads. Bumpy for some but expected for a car with sports tuned suspension per factory description. I wasn't impressed with the Bose stereo so I replaced the system.

Hello all, I've had my Nissan Maxima for about 4 yrs now. Not a bad car, it had 24,000 mi on it when I bought it in 2003, now has 112,500 mi on it. Besides the normal wear and tear, oil changes, expensive tires, I had to replace the front and rear rotors, both rear calipers, they leaked brake fluid. Had 1 ignition coil replaced at about 105,000 mi, that cost me $600. That was just one, they told me that the years 2000 to 2001 the coils were junk, so if you have one of those years, and you have not replaced them yet, you're lucky. Had to have the CPU reprogrammed, engine light came on due to the increase in ethanol to 10% from 5%. Its a very fast car with lots of power, I'd buy another Nissan!

Have replaced MAF sensor, O2 sensor, both rear brake calipers, 1 rear brake rotor, and 1 power seat motor. So much more than what I had to do with a previous 96 Camry that didn't need anything until PS work at 107k. Also much more engine and road noise so it's not as quiet as I am used to but somewhat more fun to drive, and handles better. Exhaust system started to rattle (now fixed) and there is a rattle in the front passenger door (I think) that is driving me nuts, and can't seem to get fixed. These rattles make the car seem cheap. Leather seats have held up well.

This Max has been a legacy in my family. Started off with a 88 that was ahead of it's time. Now the 00 max was heading in the right direction until its design team hit a block. What were they thinking of, the back end is simply ugly. However, set aside the exterior design and you have a solid core, with the engine, durability, electronics, and very useful vast space of cargo and seating. The Bose is tops with more than adequate bass. The SE has the ability to handle the road due to it's sports suspension. Very practical for a family sedan with a slight tendency to sportiness. The mileage proved itself @ 24mpg on avg, not too shabby for a 222 hp quasi- racer. Not too much road/wind noise.

I put over 118,000 miles on this car over the years and did many modifications to make it even sportier. The car has a great engine, interior and exterior. With a few brake, spring and exhaust mods this car can be somewhat fast and handle really well. The Bose CD/tape deck sounds great and the power features are really good. I bought this car 2 1/2 years ago with 37,000 miles on it. Now it has 63,000 and running strong. I read some reviews and heard it was a pretty good car, so I thought I'd try it. So far it's been pretty good. I like the power and the exterior styling. The 222hp really gets it up and going for a bigger car. But it has some down sides too. I think the interior looks kind of cheap. The dash set up looks pretty plain but the seats are fairly comfortable. So far I've replaced/fixed the exhaust(55,000), 1st coil(57,000), 2nd coil(60,000), and an O2 sensor(61,000). Right now I think the passenger side window motor is going bad and a a/c is acting up. I've had some expensive repairs, such as replacing the mass air flow sensor and the auxiliary fans. Yet, I always have confidence in it. It doesn't hurt that it can still blow by most cars when needed. I'm planning on purchasing a new car in 2008. The Maxima is high on my list. OK an IS 350 looks pretty good too!

Build quality is OK, I had a problem with ignition coils and MAF sensor, yet it was not that costly since I replaced it by myself ($400 total cost). I have 60K now and after replace MAF sensor, it runs like new. Good mpg - 27 in mix driving. Sound system and controls are great. I like the dashbord and interior design. Exterior is not that great, yet the idea of the 222 hp gives it respect. This is my first foregn car and what is the difference, tight build quality compare with Fords I had before. Great car and does everything I need - small enough for city use (easy to park), comfortable and roomy enough for highways and vacations. Coils were replaced around 75k miles; other than that this car has been super dependable. Excellent acceleration and a fun car to drive. The exterior styling stands out in a sea of look-alike sedans. I love the curvaceous back end and the round taillights. Very large trunk for this size car, makes it easy to pack for vacations. I bought the trunk liner, useful to keep things clean. Note JD Powers survey; the 2000 Max is more reliable than newer models. I'm keeping mine.

I drive LA Basin freeways, people speed up to try to prevent you from making a lane change in front of them, but the Maxima is too fast for them. I accelerate too, and all they can do is watch my tail lights. Mine has 150,000 miles on it, and still going strong. I commute 90 freeway miles one way to work, and wouldn't drive anything else.

I purchased my Maxima December 22, 2000. This has been an extremely reliable vehicle. I have taken care of regular maintenance when it due to be done and have had only one problem with the vehicle this entire time. The starter needed replaced in mid summer of 2005. I currently have over 110,000 miles on the vehicle and have no reservations about driving it cross country. The ONLY reason I may get rid of this vehicle would be to purchase a new Maxima!

I always knew this car was a performer. I have only owned domestic vehicles my whole life because I knew how to work on them with ease. I decided to make a change and try out a foreign vehicle. The Maxima was my first choice. I have not regretted buying this car and have enjoyed everyday commuting in it. It is comfortable with leather seats, fun to drive with a 222 hp engine and sport suspension, and classy enough to drive into any yuppified area of town. This car is a vehicle of all traits and will prove it upon any dare presented. If you need a car that does it all with a budget in mind, this one is for you.

I have had this car for 5 years. It has 15k miles on it. I have been through 2 sets of tires, Set of 02 sensors at the regularly scheduled 80kmiles, 1 set of spark plugs and one bad Ignition coil. Minus the tires that is about $1,000 in repairs over 5 years. I'd say that I am well ahead of the game with this car. The engine is strong and it is very comfortable. It delivers between 26 and 27 MPH in spirited driving at about 100miles a day. I cannot find any good reason to get rid of this car. This is a great winter alternative to my restored 81 280ZX turbo!!!

I have loved having this car from day one. It is a blast to drive with lots of power and tracks well. It is great for mountain driving. The amenites are the best and I have had no mechanical problems of any kind...just standard maintenance. Even the Toyoz tires stood up so well that I replaced them with the same kind. Additionally, the silver paint still looks like new. There are no signs of oxidation which is rare for silver vehicles. The leather interior is still like new - no signs of wear. My next car will be another Maxima for sure.

This car is fast, fun, and sexy. Gets great mileage for 222 hp, great in the curves, quiet ride. They didn't build this as well as the maximas of old though. Had to replace clutch at 50K, paint chips and scratches easily, airflow meter ($500) went out at 60K, tranny should be more solid for this engine. A big downside lately is that the engine is designed to run on 91 octane, which bankrupts you at $3.40/gallon! Otherwise trouble-free car, does great in the snow, does 60- 100 faster than 0-60, goes 60-0 in under 4 seconds (Ive checked) great low end to power up hills, doesn't notice a full load. Worth buying but set aside money for drivetrain repairs later--I know that's coming up for me

My wife bought this car in 2000 before we were married and it has been great until it hit about 60,000 miles. Like the others the coils have went out and front end and rear end suspension needs replacing. Tires are outrageously overpriced for the 17". The car is also louder than my 2002 accord. The gas mileage has never been good. For the price that she paid and what I paid for the accord I think that I came out a lot better. With 77,000 on the maxima I think that the tranny is going out. It loses power at high(over 3700) rpms. any sugestion?

This the third Maxima I've owned. That should tell you something right off the bat. These are really great cars, reiable cars, that also give you pride in owning one. It's as well made as a Honda Accord but gives you three time more fun in driving. I'm not a dealer or a Nissan rep, just a guy who loves and believes in these cars enough to take the time write such a message for your benefit. I cannot imagine why people consider any other four door (sports) sedans when they can get one of these. Enough is enough. My new (used) Maxima SE is just as good, if not better than the other ones I've owned. Or you can get some slower, lamer, more expensive Lexus for more money.

After the untimely loss of my beloved Altima, I couldn't imagine life without another Nissan. Man this car has everything but the kitchen sink! and I'm sure that was an option too... Drives like brand new, everything original. More power than is ever needed, best factory audio in its class, excellent dash design, leather, & the moonroof is so quiet I forget its wide open! Great road car. So far at 115K, no coil/sensor problems (knock on the woodgrain) :) but even that is a small price to pay for super luxury everyday. Not to mention I bought this car at such a GREAT price I feel like the Dealership got suckered.. hehe.. nice turn of the tables for a change!!

I purchased this car from a well known car dealership with a solid reputation. It was great for 6 months. Then the check engine light came on; due to a faulty oxygen sensor. Then 3 additional sensors failed within 3 months. This car is only 5 years old with only 80k miles on it. It is not driven hard and is supplied with 91 octane fuel. I will never own a Nissan again, and I will be trading for a reliable Honda soon!!

A little back ground if you want. I bought the car new in 1999 because the Camary and the Accord were both dogs compared to the Maxima, both Toyota and Honda wanted a pretty penny for cars that were soon to be a year old and because I just really like the Maxima after test driving. I have always been a Honda car and a Toyota Truck person. I hated Datsun/Nissan products. I wanted to hated to Maxima, but as soon as I test drove it, I loved it and bought it. Even though Nissan has improved the Maxima over the years, I still think my Maxima has all the things I need(ed) in a car. Sporty, quick, lots of room and comfortable. I don't have any problem going as fast as I want (only problem)

The dealers have been great and the car has been flawless. I got 58K miles out of the factory tires and after having the dealer replace them with like tires, I've gotten 63K on the next set. Based on the other reviews, we must have gotten a lemon. All within 50,000 miles: lost starter, engine shift assembly, front seat motor shorted out, transmission problems, catalytic converter failure and others. Have owned Hondas and Toyota and have NEVER had the idiotic problems I have with this car. Overall, a money pit, almost $3500 worth. PLus, Nissan does not stand behind product. When starter went out at 37,000 miles, Nissan claimed "that is just normal wear and tear." My 11 year old Honda still has original starter. Will never buy Nissan again.

I have had this car 4 yrs. During the 1st week of Feb. '05 I spent $1450 on replacing the ignition coils, mass airflow sensor & throttle response sensor. Nissan should of extended the warranty on the coils. Nissan is well aware that the coils are junk! In addition to the above the dealer replaced the A/T under warranty at 58,500 miles. I have never had a transmission fail at such low mileage! The rebuilt unit is only warranteed for 12/12. I am a preventive maintenance junkie. I installed an external A/T cooler in series with the factory unit. The transmission was serviced twice in 58,500 miles. This should never of happened. I WILL NEVER AGAIN BUY ANOTHER NISSAN!!

Between 58,000 & 58,500 I had to replace all 6 ignition coils ($490), the Mass Airflow Sensor ($538), the Throttle Response Sensor ($393). The A/T also had to be replaced, under warranty. During the 58,500 miles the A/T was serviced twice and a external cooler installed in series with the factory cooler. I am a preventative maintenance junkie! The transmission failure should never of happened. Nissan is pure junk!! The A/T should of went al least 150,000 miles. The rebuilt replacement has only a 12/12 warranty. I will get rid of this junker before the current warranty runs out! I understand Nissan is now controlled by a French Co. That explains the poor reliability!

I have owned two Nissan Maximas, a 1990 and a 2000 SE. I purchased the 2000 SE in 10/2002. Unfortunately the 2000 model has been the problem child. First the coils went which cost $750 to fix. Then the altenator, I know these things happen wtih cars none are totally maintenance free, but after reading some of the reviews and seeing the coils mentioned over and over I wonder why they haven't been recalled yet. Incidentally the 1990 SE is still going strong with no major problems.

This has been an exceptional vehicle for my wife. She is very hard on her vehicles and this car has taken a beating for 72,000 miles and is still going strong. The only issues we have had with the car is the rear window switch broke and the oil pan screw stripped when it was screwed in incorrectly. All around this is a exceptional vehicle but it was a little pricey.

I bought this Maxima in 2002 and have put almost 40,000 miles on it. Its total miles are now 69,000. It is time for some break and rotor work, but I have had no major issues other then a faulty air intake temperature sensor and an airbag code which was $75 to reset. The airbag code was caused by me taking the seats out to install a new stereo. If you unbolt the front seats do not unhook the wiring harnesses.

I bought the 2000 Nissan Maxima after being a loyal BMW follower for several years. So far I have not had any major issues. The car rides well, is very roomy, and very comfortable. I wish it handled as well as the BMW in the twisties and had a smoother and more direct shifting manual transmission though. Given the price that I paid for the Maxima, these are minor complaints. More concerning is the turning radius - I think a school bus cuts corners better. Nonethless, this is a great car for commuting and road trips. I would buy another Nissan product in a heartbeat . If I had to replace the Maxima today, I would have an Infiniti G35 in the garage. It's faster, handles better, and turns like a car instead of a truck.

The only problem in owning a 2000 Nissan Maxima is that you will be spoiled horribly and unable to accept any sedan that doesn't have the combination of power and agility with the reliability of the Nissan name. One other area of concern - speeding tickets. The engine in this car loves to run, sort of like a young barely tame horse that wants to prove something every day! Make sure that you get a good radar detector to go with the automobile, or maybe a good attorney.

For a midsized car the 2000 Nissan Maxima does it all. It provides sufficient power at 225 Hp. It is not so great on the low-end torque but other features make up for the slack. The stock stereo system is great. The radio could have been a little more updated though (pause feature). Its handling is okay. So far it has proven to be very reliable. My fuel economy is okay considering that you have to put 91 octane or better in it or the engine will knock. I don't have any real complaints about this car yet.

I bought my 2000 Maxima GXE with 7,000 miles on it, and now have 98,500 miles, with very few problems. Mine is a manual transmission, and has been absolutely bullet proof, and still has the original clutch. This has been the most reliable car I have ever had, period! The only issues were a bad mass airflow sensor at 37K (graciously replaced by Nissan even though it was just out of warranty), warped brake disks which I had replaced with aftermarket units that have proven more reliable, and that's about it. Exterior styling is not my favorite, but dollar for dollar, it is hard to beat this combo of performance, utility, and reliability.

The Maxima is my first Nissan and I was impressed by the performance and list of standard features. Not unlike some of the others reviewers, however, I have also replaced two oxygen sensors, the coils which were disengaging the no slip drive and the brakes also chatter when slowing down from higher speeds and need the rotors turned. For a medium size car the turning circle is also poor and for larger people the back seat has insufficient headroom. On the positive side the car handling is good, the finish was excellent and the gas mileage for longer trips is exceptional. I would certainly consider another Maxima, but am leaning towards the Murano as it has the extra headroom.

My wife and I got this car used with 18K miles. For three years we loved the car. Great acceleration, comfortable, decent mileage, and WAS fairly reliable. At 70K miles we started having problems with the vehicle starting. After 5 (!) trips to the dealer the extended warranty we purchased is proving to be a life saver. In the past month they have replaced the starter, battery, fuel pump, MAF sensor (3x), and it still has cold start problems as well as engine stalling problems on accelleration. The most frustrating part is that the DEALER cannot figure it out. I have been in a Mazda for a week (the warranty covers a rental) and I'm about ready to dump the Maxima for a new Mazda6!!!

Now for the ugly part, after 28,000 mile the check engine light came on and had to replace one of the oxygen sensors, about the same time the car started vibrating whenbraking, had to resurface the rotors, at 47000 had to replace the oxygen sensors again. this time it cost me over $300 to get it fixed. I expected better when I purchased this car. Little things keep failing (coils, sensors), but you can expect at least a $300 bill each time. Customer Service is terrible, too. Interior is noisy and seats are uncomfortable for long drives. However, engine is powerful and the car moves when you want it to. It's too bad all the little nuisance problems spoil what should be a good car. Unless you find a really good deal, or don't mind a noisy interior with irritating squeaks, don't waste your money on this one.

They said I had to replace all the coils this time ! Over $600.00 !!!! Nissan would do nothing for me.I will never buy another Nissan again for this headache. But I still love my car.

This is my second GLE. I bought it used with 50k, it was a great value for all the perks that the GLE comes with. I love the Bose radio. I beleive that for the money, there isn't a better value out there if you are looking for a high-class car on a middle-income budget. I've had several clients get into my car and say "nice car!"

First time owning a Nissan. Size of the car is perfect, great for parking in the city, but handling is unremarkable and has been in the shop too many times. O2 sensors all replaced twice already and have had ECM module replaced twice. Ride too stiff and car severely jolts even at small potholes. Hitting larger ones feel like the car will shake loose. Too much road and air noise. Fuel economy does not meet expectations. Test drove 2004 and found the same stiff ride. Very disappointed, probably won't buy another one.

This car is great. It is fast, nimble and comfortable. I have several friends who are 6'5" and they enjoy riding with me in the comfort. Perhaps yes it could be faster, but where and when do you get to "open it up" ? I put about thirty thousand miles on this car in a year, and except for oil changes, and two new tires it has been a great ride. Paint still looks good, interior doesnt look worn. The plastic appointments are still sturdy in the vehicle. Its roomy and it turns heads. I dont like the fact that you can't turn on your fog lights without turning on your headlights. .

I bought this car new and have had virtually nothing go wrong. Under warranty, they replaced the front rotors and solved a rattling window problem; big deal. I have been astounded nothing else has gone wrong (knock on wood.Great ride in the city with the Bose cranked up; outstanding highway performance, including mountain driving.A lot of zip when passing (I do that a lot); grips the road and owns it. Heated seats and heater work well in Colorado weather.

I have fallen in love with this car. This is the first car i have owned that i can realistically see myself with 5-7 years down the road, and even longer. I am a tall guy, 6'5 and this car offers me TONS of leg room. Im not a big fan of the Bose, so i replaced that with a juicy 800 watt system, the paint is a little thin, but the engine, the beautiful SE gauge cluster and the Auto Up/down mirror makes this car awesome.

I never planed on buying a Maxima...Ive always had Grand Cherokees....but once i test drove a Maxima...I was hooked! Overall, my Maxima has been the most reliable car I've ever owned, and is also the most fun to drive! Superb acceleration, & braking, and decent gas mileage. I just miss that high driving position of an SUV....perhaps I should check out the Nissan Murano next year...

Even If I was rich, I would drive a Max.

Love the bose, auto temperature, Sunroof, 17' rims, everything! I bought my 5-speed 91' with 91k on it for 2 years. rarely did it give me any problems. Now I bought a 2000 with 43k and I am in heaven!!

My husband and I purchased this vehicle with high miles because we got a very good deal on it. My husband loves it. We are Nissan owners. All our past Nissans have performed exceptionally well and we hope this one will repeat the same performance. When I'm in the driver's seat..I'm comfortable, however, when in the passenger's seat, I'm not as comfortable although, the ride is a smooth one..I like a little more room to stretch. My son loves it. It's stylish and the blue color is just amazing. It's fast on the highway and the ride isn't bumpy at all. Big tires contributes to the smooth ride.

Leased this car originally & it has been such a great car, I bought it a few months before lease was up. This is the only car I've ever wanted to buy after leasing it! Love the handling, comfort& power. I like a car that will jump out in traffic when necesary, & accelerate quickly when needed - this car does both very well. Even though GXE was the base model, it has many extras that I really appreciate. It feels like a luxury car, & is a great value for the price. It has been very reliable & we've had absolutley no problems,. Just replaced original tires at 39K miles, & have not needed to do anything else other than scheduled maintenance.

Overall, it is a fun car to drive with great power, but when the car got about 70,000 miles on it, little things would go wrong like shrtage in lights. In November 2003, I had the car serviced and they supposivly serviced everything! By the end of December the car was to the point where it did want to stay running. I found that it was the ingition coils and they said all 6 had to be replaced instead of the one bad one! $850 to replace them. The car has been in the shop four times from minor problems. PEOPLE, KEEP THE MANUAL YOU RECIEVE ON THE EXTENDED WARRANTY! IT IS YOUR PROOF OF COVERAGE! If I had the chance to repurchase I WOULD NOT!

The '00 Max SE is a great car 'til 42K miles. The SES light came on w/stuttering effect. Dealer diag($100)& suggest:replace not 1 but ALL 6 ignition coils. Why not just 1? Nissan Tech(Vince Peterson): we can't pinpoint the specific coil. So we had all 6 coils replaced. Once done, Nissan called to say that coil #1 was it.Folks, don't get ripped-off by Nissan service. They can diagnose the problem to the specific coil. Also the service mgr. mentioned that Nissan Co. recommends changing all 6 ignition coils for this problem for '00 Maximas.I think this only points to poor quality product(ignition coil) that Nissan isn't admitting and doing nothing about.

Traded a '96 Olds 88. Of course the Olds was slower and uglier, but more comfortable. The power is surprising and the car is fun to drive. It rides a little hard but handles well, especially braking. The seats could be more comfortable, but are much much better than the Mazda I tried. Nice profile, especially with optional rims. Original tires done at 37,000.

We've had this SE since new in 2000. Just change the oil and it needs nothing else. With under 40,000 miles so far we have not even made it to the first tune-up (100,000 miles). The only problem I've had is brake rotor warpage at 30,000 miles. Had the rotors turned (for $10 each) and the problem was gone. The original Bridgestone tires should be replaced with better all-season tires for winter driving (like the Michelins). Believe me, you want the best rubber to take advantage of the power. This car is fun to drive and easily out- accelerates Accords and Camrys.

The size is perfect for me at 5'2". There are no blind spots. I can take passsengers in the back seat without having to worry about their comfort. The best thing about this car, however, is its power. It's wonderful to pull on to the highway without worries - I used to drive a Cavalier. When my lease was up this month, I couldn't bring myself to turn it in - I bought it.

This was a great car for the first two years that I owned it. But as the miles have racked up it really hasn't help up like other Nissan's I've had. There are all sorts of nasty sounds that this car makes when accelerating and the transmission just doesn't like to be driven at anything over half throttle or it'll bang around or not shift at all. Lots of pinging. The stereo has broken. The A/C is noisy. Just stuff I wouldn't expect from a Nissan. Yes...I've had it in and out of the dealer and mechanics. They've replaced things...only for them to break again. Definite disappointment. Should have bought a '99.

Bought 2000SE off of EBAY w/60K miles for $11K and have driven it for about 3 months now. Excellent ride with suprising power from 40-90 MPH. Was thinking about Acura 3.2TL but went with the lower cost of Maxima. Also, the 3.2 have had extreme tranny issues. I put on some new Falkens and they are a very cost efficient complement to the performance and handling of the car. I hope this is geared for at least 150K miles, because I plan to enjoy the ride for a long time to come.

I had several cars in mind when I was shopping for a car. Camry and Accord looked too plain for me. Passat in the long run would be more expensive to maintain. This car has one of the best engines in it's class. The only problem I noticed with it is the pathetic down shifting on auto transmission. The answer to it is very simple, TURN THE OVER DRIVE OFF! Once that is done, the car leaves pretty much any V6 in the dust.

Replaced a 96 Buick Skylark. Performance doesn't beat the Buick by as much as I hoped (222 vs. 155hp) but otherwise a far better car in every way. Huge rear seat, reliable, joy to drive. I disagree about Maximas being ugly. I think the '02-'03 in silver with spoiler is the hottest looking car on the road! Now the '04, that's hideous. what were they thinking? Oh well, I'd probably buy it anyway.

My first Maxima had lots and lots of miles on it and started to make me a little nervous, so I got a 4 cyl 2 door Honda Accord for the gas mileage. This car is even better than the advertised "4 door body, 2 door soul" that Nissan previously advertised it as. So much fun to drive, it almost sucks to arrive at your destination. I have put nearly 80k miles on it, and it has only required tires (one set at 58k miles), brakes (pads at 59k miles and front rotors and all pads at 78k miles), and a serpantine belt change (along with regular oil changes, and oil and air filter changes). A very quick, agile GLE.

I have a 2000 SE Auto and with 43,000 miles after 42 months, car still strong, engine still sweet! This is truly a 4 door sports car. Performance is better than a lot of "sports cars" I've driven. There is nothing finer than to be cruising down the interstate at 80 MPH, punching the gas, and feeling the acceleration. The engine does run out of breath at about 95 MPH, but that is a small complaint. (I shouldn't be going that fast anyway!)

Just had the brakes checked. Mechanic told me I have another 20 - 30k left on the pads. Haven't done anything else other than routine maintenence. I still love driving this car. This is the most fun car I've ever owned. It still has original everything after 44,000 miles. It's only been to the body shop when someone smashed it in a parking lot. IT'S NEVER BEEN TO A MECHANIC. All I've done is regular oil changes. But I will get the 50,000 service done soon.

C'mon Nissan

Have had previous Nissans and have always had good experiences with Nissan, but am a bit disappointed in this Maxima. The service engine light has been on several times and car has barely 40K miles on it, also the springs in the drivers seat squeek and creak all the time while driving, and has been doing this since about 25K miles, it's extremely annoying. Dealers don't seem to help. Have a 2000 Quest and have had several mechanical problems as well. One of the main reasons I went with Nissan was for reliability, I've lost a lot of confidence.I do like the Nissan styling and engine performance, and want to love the Maxima, but can't.

This is my second GLE, and I've had nothing but great luck and top-end performance from both of them. I'm especially keen on the GLE's V-6 engine, which I tested against both the Camry V-6 and the Accord V-6 when I was first looking at the Nissan back in 1998. Honda and Toyota may have ugraded their engine performance in the intervening years, but I'd be surprised if either could match the GLE for either power or pickup. A great car, albeit a little pricey and not overly stylish.

I really want to like this car. However, I have had nothing but problems with this car over the past year. Three engine coils (yep, that's half of them) have gone bad over the past six months. In addition, my computer was replaced within the first year, had to be updated again recently and now my oxygen sensor is having problems. I've been into the service department more times with this car than I have with any car previously.

Overall, this car is sweet. I love the bose system and subwoofer. For a factory system it rocks. The interior layout is simply designed. I couldn't see myself driving a camry or accord. I am happy with my purchase, yet not happy with the reliabily and fit n finish. 40K miles so far. I still have my 87 max, which I still love (87, best max ever)

Great car! It may not be for everyone, however. I enjoy a vehicle that handles and performs when pushed a little harder than usual. This Maxima does exactly that! It may not be for everyone because the elements that make it a "driver's car" (upgraded suspension components) make fo a firm ride. Personally, I'll sacrifice ride quality for performance any day. Not that this car is uncomfortable. I'm 6 feet tall and, unlike many Japanese- badged cars, the seats are supportive for short or long trips. On the other hand, if you prefer the ride/handling of a Grand Marquis, this may not be the car for you.

I have been wanting one for a long time and after finally getting rid of my gas guzzling Durango, it is nice to have a sporty fuel efficient car. I cannot say enough about the styling and looks of this car. Oh, those cool tail lights! I just love 'em. I plan on driving this car until it won't go anymore!!

I love my Maxima. Great car for the money. Easily competes with the top of the line cars and has better styling than Honda. I bought it new with 52 miles on it and have driven it everywhere and have never been disappointed. It has all the options except the CD changer. Pearl white with Black Leather...not available in the new models (not sure why?). Very few problems.

With a 5 speed tranny and 222 horses working up front, this car is a blast to drive. A bit of body roll but easily fixed with some add-ons. Comfortable cabin, great design and fabulous engine. Its also nice to pull up to a light and take on a kid in a 4 banger who thinks hes ready to be on the fast and the furious.

This is a good car, but for the GXE they seem to have lost sight of the fact that this was once the 4DSC (4 door sports car). Mash the throttle and, yes, it takes off, but with no mean-sounding growl. The interior is roomy and comfortable, the trunk big and the ride smooth and quiet, but it doesn't seem like a sports sedan to me.

This car offers high performance (compared to the competition), and a low price with proven reliability and comfort. My only complaints are about the interior materials and the front wheel drive layout. My other car is an Audi A4, so I know what lengths some manufacturers will go to to surround the driver with lux materials and mechanics in the cockpit, but the Maxima's interior is functional. To be more sport oriented, this must switch over to rear or all wheel drive though along with a shorter throw shifter. This engine is definitely a keeper.

Although it's not quite as nice as my 93 Acura Legend LS, it is a great car for the money. The engine is strong, the car is built well, drives well and is extremely reliable. Confortable enough for 405 adults. You get what you pay for. This years Maxima will never compete with other higher end luxury/sport sedans, but comes very close. If you don't want to spend a lot of money on a BMW, Acura or Infinity, this is a great car.

I can't keep a car longer than 3 years, but my Maxima is a fabulous car and I want to keep driving it! I was impressed with the sporty handling. The trunk space is great, the legroom in the back fabulous and engine, once it's in the powerband, pulls nicely. I do wish it had more torque at the low end..... The tailights are ugly. Wish the doors would automatically lock, when the vehicle starts moving. I was hit and put into a spin at 60 MPH. All I could think, was 1) I'm going to die 2) Wow, this thing's even smooth in a spin 3) "Enjoy the ride!" Best car I've ever owned in 25 years of driving...

I wasn't in the market for a Nissan Maxima but a friend of mine had done a lot of car and SUV research and loved the new Maxima. She ended up buying an SUV but she said if should would have bought a car, it would have been the Maxima. So, I started doing my own reasearch on them and after a few test drives, I decided I wanted one. Mine is fully loaded and I have the bigger wheels (17"). Everyone always comments on how roomie my car is even when the front seat is slid back. The leather still looks great. Good sound system. Good size trunk. I am very happy with this car and would buy another one.

Having driven a Jeep Grand Cherokee before, I was looking for a car that tracks well, has the same grunt the 5.2 ltr V8 in the Jeep had, and offers me a manual. Not wanting to spend more than $24k, the list became pretty short quickly. I was not disappointed by the engine. How sweet it is! Lots of grunt, lots of revability. I think teh car looks a little weird from the outside, but I don't have to look at it while I am driving. Build quality and reliability have been excellent, and I am getting about 24 mpg in mixed, somewhat aggressive driving. The tires are almost shot after only 22,000 miles

I've done 70k miles in this car in under 2 years and I must say it's been very reliable, no problems other than wear and tear stuff (beakes, etc). However, I've noticed the engine has gotten a little noisier in the past few months, only to be told by nissan that it's normal for a car with this mileage. Surely a car isn't over the hill at 75k!! Also, the handling has always been a little clumsy. I find the throttle unsresponsive and use the brakes a lot. Drove a rental Max SE (2002?) this week - thru the mountains of Oregon - and it was a joy to drive. Perhaps they worked out the bugs on my model...
