We bought the Honda 2000 Odyssey in 2004. The warranty was still valid. This can has been super-reliable and super-comfortable for our family of five and two dogs. After the warranty expired, an automatic door stopped working easily. Eventually we stopped using it. We had a mechanic do the 100K service of changing the water pump and timing belt; that cost about $950, which was much cheaper than the dealership. When the car reached 16 years of age it needed a new transmission. The repair cost is too much for the age of the car, so we are trading it in.

This van has been amazing. Still reliable, still 24mpg on the highways, about 18-20 in town. Always had seat covers, so they look new. It's hauled kids, bikes, camping stuff, dump loads, lumber... everything. Still only preventive maintenance except for normal items like headlights. The ONLY problem we've had is the door seals sticking for the two sliding doors. They've been replaced, treated with a variety of non-stick films. Get worse after a rain. Luckily we've had a drought in CA. No reason to get another, its the reliable box.

So sad!

The van has been one of the most reliable vehicles we have owned. We have traveled across the country with it a few times with no problems and it is a solid performer during the harsh winters in Chicago. We purchased the van used 5 years ago with 110,000 miles and it currently has 150,000 miles. During those 40,000 miles we have not had any transmission problems and aside from preventive maintenance and tires the only things we have had to replace were: battery, rear hub, oxygen sensor, oil pan gasket and sway bar links. I keep very detailed records of all the maintenance and our annual cost to maintain this van has averaged only $800/ year. Not bad for a car that is fully paid for! The interior is very roomy and we can haul a ton of stuff. The quality of the interior is top notch as it has held up very well to the abuse of our three kids, dog, and numerous trips to the hardware store. The technology is not the best since it is a 15 year old van now, but a Pioneer aftermarket stereo fixed all of that. Our van now has bluetooth audio for our iPhones and handsfree calling. The exterior is in great shape and the paint still holds a nice shine. Personally I think the 99-04 years is one of the nicest designs among all the Odyssey's. There are a couple of small rust spots along the rear wheel wells, but no complaints here given that we live in the rust belt. Overall, we have been extremely happy with our van and plan to drive it another 50,000 or 70,000 miles. After that we will purchase another Odyssey - perhaps an EX-L this time.

No tranny problems here.

I bought this vehicle new and sold it about a year ago. It was a great vehicle for the 11yrs we owned it. Only consistent problem was the passenger automatic sliding doors would get out of alignment every other year or so. It also developed a slight oil leak (very slight) as in one to five drops per week (estimate) never actually counted the droplets on a weekly basis. I only hope the new owners have as good of an experience with this vehicle as we did.

No longer a Honda fan. My 2000 odyssey is on it's 5th transmission. The first failed at about 55000. Honda put 3 rebuilt transmissions in, one only lasted about 15,000 miles. The fifth i put in at an independent dealer who rebuilt it. We bought new and had all work done at the dealership, took good care of it. Honda Corporate refused to pay for the last transmission. I feel that since they know there are problems with the transmissions they should take responsiblity for them. They advertise that 80% of their Honda's are on the road 20 years later, they should keep them running by replacing defective transmissions for 20 years. I expected to keep this for 20 years.

Purchased Odyssey new in April 2000. Had a '92 Chrysler minivan previously which was the most unreliable vehicle ever. Have 4 kids and needed something large. Now has 113,000 miles, extremely reliable (routine maintenance only) except for transmission. Replaced transmission last year at 105,000 miles. Honda split the cost based on extended warranty for transmission. Sliding doors stick in wet weather. 16-18 MPG city, 22-25 MPG highway at 70-75 MPH. Reasonable for a heavy vehicle. Still solid with no squeaks or rattles. Don't use to too often anymore but it runs great. Own three other Hondas and Odyssey has been just as reliable.

Decent minivan, has some squeaks and rattles, struts are shot and the second transmission just blew. The first transmission went at ~58k, less than 40k on the second. I have kept the transmission fluid clean by drain and fills, has Honda trans cooler. Other items replaced have been wear items. I would be quite happy with this vehicle if the transmissions had been better engineered and reliable. Honda has been poor in standing behind their product IMHO and won't get another purchase out of me. (multiple Honda car owner.)

We bought our 2000 Odyssey in 2004 with 93,000 miles. We just replaced the original transmission with a nicely rebuilt one. I love this van! Drives nicely, looks great, gets good mileage (avg. 21 mpg) for a van. For the wear and tear we have put on it, 3 kids, 6 dogs, numerous road trips, it has performed admirably.

I'd be very happy with this vehicle if it weren't for the automatic transmission. I nursed the original transmission along for years, but it finally became too flaky to consider safe. I just had it rebuilt at 160k miles at a private shop for almost $4,000 exactly. I had my car serviced by the dealer until 4 years ago; they kept telling me that they couldn't find anything wrong. Only when I took it to a private mechanic did I get the news that these transmissions are not up to par.

I am short of 100k on my 2000. The original transmission lasted until 60k. The replacement which was free under the extended warranty only lasted 30k. Honda discounted the 3rd transmission to $1600 for the 3rd transmission. I have no faith in these units with the bearing failure. If it weren't for the poor economy, I would trade the car in. I also experienced the other issues that that were covered by the extended warranty, like the EGR ports. Otherwise, the car has held up fairly well without other major problems. It's a shame that this handsome nice driving minivan has this transmission reliability issue.

Bought this van from my sister who bought it new but after a serious side- impact accident the van held up well. I got a deal. Engine seems underpowered and handling is ok. I've had constant issues with the van. Worn front tires, front brakes need replacing almost yearly. Replaced the tranny @ 90K but now at 115K it's gone bad again. Sliding door problems and EGR/cat converter issues also plague my van. I have an Acura TL and am just hoping it doesn't have the same issues. I'm selling for a different brand if I can get out from under these repair costs. I wouldn't buy it again and have definitely taken Honda off the top of my shopping list.

Bought new. Had most bang for buck when it came out. Handles well--more like car than van/truck. Had lots of innovative features. It's probably improved, but always had Toyotas before--going back too (this week). It's the family van (3 girls); we use it for everything everyday, even pulling a trailer. However, seats uncomfortable, stereo marginal, power doors stink. Has problems seen on forums: Transmission replaced (recall fix). Power doors constantly failing (3 times since warranty ran out at $200+ a pop, 7 times total). Dash light dimmer burned out (recall fix). Speedometer failed. Loud, whining rear wiper but still works (we just don't use it). Some other dash lights out.

So far so good but dreading future

Bought the van from first owners a few years ago after our first kid and before the 2nd. Didn't realize the van had problems. Check engine light went on after 2 days. Called the seller and they pretended they don't know about it. There was a recall on the problem but they never took it in. Long story short it is the cat converter thing. It has been 15,000 miles since we have been driving on that check engine light so far it is just a light. The transmission slips when I back it in on our uphill driveway but no major transmission problems yet. Awesome space I use it to haul stuff around all the time after the 3rd seat fall flat include 8 ft dry walls !! : )

Decided to buy the LX as everyone else was buying the EX model, leaving LX's on the lot. Didn't want the electric doors as I saw that as something that could go wrong. The van has never let us down, gets great mileage, and is comfortable enough. Honda replaced the EGR valve and transmission based on technicians recommendation during normal maintenance. Since the transmissions replacement mileage went up from 24 mpg to 27 mpg on the highway. Otherwise just routine maintenance. We've kept it simply because of what it can haul, sheets of plywood and more important my kids junk to and from college. Since buying this we've bought 3 more Honda's, but have kept the van for its utility.

Yeah, it's a minivan. But...if what you want is solid reliability and flexibility, then the Odyssey delivers. I have had mine since new in late 1999 and it has only been to the shop once over 130,000 miles for a timing belt. That's it. I have used Mobil 1 and been careful to keep up with the maintenance, which is very little other than fluids, battery, plugs and brake pads. I am going to buy another Odyssey if my 10 year old one ever decides to conk out.

I should have bought a Grand Caravan. I song and dance about reliability. Not true just a bunch of fiction from consumer reports and others. The most problematic vehicle I have owned except maybe my 68 GTO. Check engine light never stayed off, catalytic converter replaced 3x, EGR port, two transmissions after warranty was up. Sliding door repairs constantly, electrical problems and irritating road/wind noise. I am not sure what the deal is with the front brakes wearing out so often. Most of these problems were recall issues and the dealer failed to tell me. Called Honda and they refused to honor any help with repair bills. My wife and kids are stranded 5 hours away now. Tranny went out again.

I am so sorry I didn't find this forum before buying my 2000 Honda Odyssey with 45000 miles. Transmission is "toast" at 100000 miles, and from the horror stories I've read here and heard elsewhere, it is not worth fixing. I am going to donate this (if they'll take it) and buy only Toyota from now on. I was expecting to get 150K miles easily, as I did with my Toyota's, but this clunker fell about 2.5 years shy of that. I will never buy another Honda based on all the bad transmissions in this plus Accord and others. Goodbye Honda, Hello Toyota.

We bought our Odyssey back in 2005 with 60k miles on it. It now has over 130k miles on it with only minor problems: Check engine light on (oxygen sensor) and paint durability issues sliding rear door problems. It seems a lot of people have this problem. I found that it helped if you lube the movable parts on the door it helps keep it from sticking. As far as the transmission goes, you need to service and change fluid every 15k or 20k miles for reliability. Most people don't do this and they wonder why they have problems. We had the timing belt changed at 100k miles. This van has been on 2 1500 mile trips and 2 1200 mile trips with no issues. The van is a daily driver.

Well I purchased my 2000 Honda Odyssey brand new. I personally have never had problems with my car! No transmission problems, my cd and navigation work fine, and no repairs on the sliding doors! My wife drove this car around and never a problem, so I totally recommend this car! If you were to take a look at my Honda it still looks brand new! I liked the Honda Odyssey so much that I actually recently purchased the 08 Odyssey touring, more expensive than the 2000 but same quality. And quality doesn't come cheap!

I bought my Odyssey new, performed scheduled maintenance and haven't had any major problems. Did have EGR valve replaced under warranty. The transmission has a small leak that is annoying but has never failed. As a side note, I never used Honda Transmission Fluid, and I changed my transmission fluid every 40K miles or so - usually after towing a small utility trailer or u-haul. I now have 156k miles and given the history of cars I've owned before, if it broke down tomorrow I wouldn't be upset. What will bother me more about buying another Odyssey is that inflated price for a comparably equipped model but considering I had to pay sticker for this one, I guess it's to be expected.

I was first caught in the Canada vs. US fight, but finally resolved through Tokyo to correct first transmission failure at 78K mile. Second transmission has now failed after 70K miles and every dealer and transmission shop is familiar with the problem. Honda US will not help because of the 'gray market' status! What a joke. All 2000 Odysseys were built in Canada and I do not believe built in Canada with US use is why the transmissions fail. US Customer Service is useless. I'm going to try Tokyo again.

Bought used w/ 44K mi. EGR problems @ 70k (fixed free by dealer). This van eats batteries and front brakes. On my 4th battery, and 3rd set of brakes in past 65K miles. Also for past yr. have a recurring fuel vapor leak (EVAP system) fault. Tried new gas cap, but that did not fix. Does a good job pulling our pop-up camper (2500#) though. No engine or transm. issues.

Bought the van used with 20km. Certified so when the door motor died it was free. I now have 65km and no significant issues. Replaced timing belt and brakes and have intermittent issues with doors buzzing and check engine light coming on. Most are liveable issues with a 8-yr old car. It is tough to get transmission into D3 other than when I am parked, but I haven't really needed to do that all that often. Great car for long family vacations. I will probably keep the car for a few more years and get another Honda.

Bought Van from dealer used with 110,000 miles, bought used Japanese before with over 40000 in the past. Excellent mpg on hwy of 27 mpg. I'm big, fits me well, tons of room for passengers and stuff. CD went out, a/c went out, remote doors to not work all the time, sliding driver door will not lock automatically, transmission went out 170,000. 2 friends' Odyssey trans went out at 99,000. Rubber timing belts in Van changed at 115,000, had 2 Toyota vans, only changed oil, never any problems drove to 220,000 miles, this one at 215,000 no a/c toime to change timing belts, wonder if transmission will last still like handling, roominess, but can trust Honda, new vans seem worst.

Don't even need to write a review, they are all the same! On my third transmission. First one replaced by Honda at 95,000. Now at 152,000 the car will only move in reverse. Honda do a thing! Have had issues with the doors as well. Passenger side door needs new contacts. Won't close and when the door opens, it scratches up against the doors. The path the door travels is now paint free! What a nightmare. I will never own another Honda!

This car is a nice car we have taken it on lots of road trips and it has not broken down. The car is comfortable, roomy, and quite. I have not had to replace the transmission the only things we had to replace was the fuel line and the battery so far. The cons are that the engine does not provide enough power, leather seating is not available, and all-wheel drive is not an option but everything else is good for the time being we plan to keep it for another year because it is still reliable.

We bought the Odyssey new and have 197,000 on it 8 years later. I had hoped to keep the van for 4 more years (300,000 miles) but may not make it. I had ERG problems several times and was never able to get the dealer to fix it even though they identified the ERG as defective. It costs $300 each time for repairs. The sliding doors are a potential problem. Both open with a hard knock, but are still operational. I'm sure a fix will be needed in the near future. I also had a $3500 transmission rebuild in Dec. 2007. Now six months later the van is back in the shop because the transmission is slipping. A Prius may be in my immediate future!

Just purchased a 2005 Odyssey EX-L and thank God I checked here about the Touring edition first (didn't buy that one) We still have the 2000 EX and still love it, never a single complaint or problem...NEVER! We did the timing belt and water-pump replacement at the correct time and the tune-up too. All done at the Honda dealership. I can not say one bad thing about it other than I never thought I would drive a van, now I bought another one!

Paid $21,000 new off the showroom floor in Alaska. Van has 117,000 miles and has had no major problems. Replaced timing belt at 100K but it did not need to be replaced, the old one looked like new. Tried to sell it a few years ago at fair market value but no takers.

I have to say this vehicle never left me on the side of the road somewhere. 118k without having transmission fail. Spent over 6k in scheduled recommended maintenance and wear. Including things I wouldn't expect to fail so soon..... Auto sliding door junction boxes, Motor mounts, and EGR. Did I mention EGR? Reason for that is I had it serviced under recall and it still need service for same issue yet I had to pay $700 for it. Ugh!!!

The first year we owned our van was great. Starting with the first summer our luck ran out and every summer for 3 years we'd have to replace the transmission. Honda helped us out once but after that we were on our own. During research my husband found out that the transmission used on this 2000 model had so many problems that Honda never used it again. Today we still own it but are hunting for another vehicle because our 3rd transmission has started to act up and before it dies we need to get out of this money pit of a car. we were a couple hundred from paying it off but instead are putting that money towards another vehicle. My husband swears we'll never own another Honda again.

Two big problems with the 2000 Odyssey. First, the transmission tends to break and has design issues. Second, the automatic sliding doors tend to break also. Both of them on my Odyssey have had issues, and are expensive to fix. Other than those, it is comfortable and handles well for a minivan.

The long-term history of this vehicle has been moments of love interspersed with tragic disappointment. Our first mistake was not realizing that buying a Canadian-registered Honda in the US would cut us off from all factory support. Honda USA wouldn't help us because the car was Canadian. Honda Canada wouldn't help us because it was purchased in the US. Recall work performed for free for my neighbors cost me money. This is especially galling since all 2000 Odysseys were built in a single factory in Ontario. I will never buy another Honda. Problems: short-lived brakes, doors, more doors, transmission at 78k, another tranny at 109k, squealing brakes, broken seat, radio, smog control.

This vehicle has been the primary people mover for our family of six. It has towed our 2000 lb tent trailer all over North America. We probably run over the 3500 lb recommended towing capacity. We bought it used with 60 km and it currently has 180 km. In that time we have only done routine maintenance and replaced consumables (tire, brake pads). This vehicle has been run right at the limits of what is recommended and hasn't given us a spot of trouble.

We bought this at 101K miles and drove it two years till 127K miles until I totaled it in an accident (nobody hurt; safety is great!). Biggest beef: EGR system clogged twice in two years ($200-$300 cost to fix each time). Catalytic converter gave out at 100K (fix $800). Water pump needed replacement at 119K ($800). We also found road noise pronounced and tiring (we suffer enough noise from our small children). If you're prepared to pay for repairs and maintenance, buying used may be a good idea. I figure that total cost of this van to us, in two years of ownership, was $2500 per year, counting purchase price (no financing, 6% sales tax, repairs, and maintenance (not counting gas or insurance

I have owned a 91 Honda Civic, a 92 Honda Civic and now a 2000 Odyssey. I was skeptical about our electric doors - pretty solid except in the winter - they will be a bit sticky if you keep it outside. Otherwise, this has been very solid and we have had no repairs and no problems starting or running. Took a 5000 mile cross country trip right after we bought it. Did great without a single snag.

Bought this van because of "Honda quality". Now at 138K miles. 3 transmissions, cat converter, sliding doors that don't always close, 3 wheel alignments in 4 years, and loose bolts in front suspension still looking for that quality. Read the reviews of this minivan notice how many have problems yet the reviewer still mentions "Honda quality". Be honest people if the car had an American name you'd be trashing it. I wish it was as reliable as my Mazda and, yes, my Dodge.

Our Honda Odyssey was purchased coming off of a lease. When we noticed that it had been used for towing we decided to purchase the extended warranty for peace of mind. So glad we did! The contacts on the sliding doors were replaced, also the transmission along with some minor things. Today the catalytic converter and the timing belt are being replaced at our cost out of warranty. This is our first major expense out of pocket. We've gotten great service and care! We own a 1997 Accord. It is very reliable, but we prefer driving and riding in our Honda Odyssey for the comfort and ease of getting in and out and the ride. We both have back problems. We would again purchase an Odyssey. We love it!!

Good in beginning. Always had Front brake over heating issues in long Highway drives (not city). Speedometer (70=66MPH) and Odometer were off by 5% (likely to make it appear to get better gas millage). Major tire issues with original tires. At 65,000 replaced EGR $300. Replaced brakes every 20,000 miles $240. At 86,000 Catilic Converter & Motor Mounts $1,700. At 92,000 miles $1,200 to replace sliding door motor. We had 93,000 miles. At 100,000 they wanted $1,700 for timing belt/waterpump replacement. I have not had major transmition issues yet, but they were comming also. Trans upshifts had changed. Can't afford $4,000 dollors trans. It became a vehicle we could not afford to keep any more.

We bought our Odyssey with 61K on it and I am very happy with it. It gets great gas mileage, Honda stands behind their work and it's a great ride, especially on highway trips. Did have a problem with the EGR valve at 81K, had it fixed and am appealing to American Honda to reimburse me as they'd extended the EGR warranty to 80K! My goal is to keep it for years to come, I'm hoping to put another 125K on the vehicle. It's my vehicle of choice anytime I go out driving. Only minor glitch is sometimes the automatic sliding doors freeze up, but that's usually due to human error! Bought new tires, have replaced front headlight bulbs and other routine maintenance, that's it!

Bought brand new in Jan 2000, was very pleased with vehicle until first major service, had 30000k, that's when the problems began, (rear brakes) after this deglazing of the drums the problem began and stayed with them until 110000k loud vibration noises when braking from 110km, thats probable why 2001 got all 4 discs, sliding doors already replace motor and latching mechanism every two years, now noticing trans, clunking noise especially when backing out of driveway. Got to call Honda Canada to ask about transmission recall. Hopefully the 2005 and newer don't have to many bugs. Hope this helps

The driving dynamics and utility of this van are outstanding. Better cargo, passenger room than a large SUV with fuel economy of a car. We currently have 90K miles on the van with no costly problems. Small irritations have been numerous: Squeeking rear brakes under light braking. Sliding door sticking problems, check engine light on for bad EGR valve under warranty, if tires are cheap and/or cannot be balanced perfectly you will get vibration at freeway speeds. Overall I'm happy with our van and expect to keep it for 10 years and 200K. I'm a bit concerned with all the transmission failures, but even if I have to replace it once it will still be cheaper than buying new.

Bought from the original owners at 103,000 miles and we now have 116,000. The previous owners said the transmission was replaced at 86,000 miles (not normal for Honda, I have an '89 Integra with 197,000 miles on the original engine & trans). The driver's side sliding door doesn't latch itself all the way half the time so we have to push it closed all the way manually. Also there is alot of road noise. Otherwise, this is an amazingly nice, fun to drive minivan. I grew up with a VW Bus, minivans have sure come a long way. This van isn't perfect but it's by far the best for its time out there.

We finally purchased our first Honda. It's a 2000 Odyssey EX and we have quicky discovered how thoughtfully designed this upscale minivan is. We appreciate the automatic climate controls and excellent attention to detail. For example, our previous Ford Windstar could not handle a 4 x 8 sheet of plywood and the Odyssey can with the rear door shut. We certainly feel we made the right choice and look forward to many trouble free miles ahead.

The 2000 Honda Odyssey LX is a van that has good days and bad. Some days when it is not even cold out, the sliding doors will not open, and the person must use excessive force to open them. Honda just says "there is nothing we can do about it." The paint on the van is also very thin and scratches easily. The same can be said about the interior dashboard and door panels. They all scuff or scratch easily. The good things are the van is very well built frame wise. After being in two rear-end accidents the van still looks as it did before the accidents, minus a few scratches. The amount of cargo space is probably the best feature. Other than that the van is pretty good.

Problems from the getgo. Any ride is a noisy ride with all the exterior road noise. We bought it used at 42K, had the transmission replaced at 44K and now are having more transmission issues at 70K. Doors have had constant buzz for 10K miles. Dealer claimed no problems until and now and we have to replace both latches and sensors. Door flew open on city street-- luckily child secure in car seat. Any small interior light left on drains battery and there isn't a way to ensure all lights are off in a well lit garage-- our fix is to tape the light switch to the off position. Others love their Hondas so maybe we got a bad year but The Siennas do look great in 2005.

After 5 years and 71,000 miles I've few complaints. Other than the wheels, it looks, runs and handles like it did day one. No shakes, no rattles, no squeaks. Maybe people with problems just have bad karma. Only real complaint is with the finish on the alloy wheels, which has not held up. Moisture go in under clear coat and severe peeling on two wheels. Transmission has been solid, and other than rear brake squeal (when wet) that ended after I cleaned out the accumulated brake dust out of the drums, brakes were flawless. Front went 70K miles without service. Once I replaced the OEM Michelins with Bridgestone Turanzas, the road noise was significantly reduced.

After reviewing and comparing every minivan made, we chose the Honda and couldn't have been happier. Power is plentiful, storing the backseat is easy ( if you don't mind removing the headrests). Cup holders seem to be an afterthought. There are plenty, they just don't hold very well. Lots of room, can take six on a week long road trip with all the stuff and have room to spare. Missing AWD and occasional glitch with power doors are only drawbacks that would make us look at another brand next time around. All in all, very solid car and it fit us perfectly.

The breaks have been worked on every year and squeek loudly all the time. It is on it's third transmission. The passenger doors have been broke twice due to the seal. The dash shakes and rattles and is very annoying. Our friends drive Honda cars at our recommendation because of past experieces but we won't be recommending anymore. Much to Honda's credit, they 'fixed' them for free, but not the damage that the broken doors caused to the paint. We have a complaint in to Honda, our dealer Valencia Honda was non responsive. I want to sell it quick.

After owning a plymouth voyager, i was disappointed in the quality of the hondas interior features and equipment. The cupholders are flimsy causing frequent spills. The stereo system is second rate for a car of this caliber. Doors and body creak. Brakes and suspension are noisy. Gas mileage is poor. The folding rear seat is a nifty feature. The middle row captians chairs do not recline very far and this annoys my children.

Currently have 54K miles on our Odyssey. Originally purchased new. If you are looking for a dependable used van, I would highly recommend. The 2000's have problems with the automatic door closing mechanism and evidently, the transmission. Honda fixed the door closer by relacing the motors on both sides free of charge and post the warranty period. Transmission warranty was extended to 100K miles. Overall, 20-21 MPG.

We have had the 2000 EX for almost 4 years. It's been a great van but has had some trouble spots. First those electric doors, we had to reset them at least twice and replace the motor on one side which is NOT cheap, fortunately they covered it under warrenty even though we had just passed 35,000. Second is the brakes. My husband says it's the drums, they creak and make a lot of noise. Replacing the pads did not help. Sound system could be MUCH better and the front seats could be more comfortable. Other than that we have loved the van. It has enormous amounts of space and the seat flexibility is great.

We bought this van used (Honda Certified) in 10/02. It had half the mileage of all the other Odysseys on the lot making me suspicious, but it was Certified so I figured we were safe. So far so good. We got it for several thousand under TMV and have been very happy with it to date. No mechanical problems. Electrical problem is only that the interior lights sometimes don't come on when the driver's door is opened. Annoying, but not a major issue.

After 4 sets of breaks and 2 sets of drums the breaking system sound like the axle is going to fall off. The side doors woun't open when its cold. Neither of the problems could be solved by the dealership even after 2 1/2 years of trying. I bought a honda because they were suppose to be able to go over 100,000 miles, not this one.

Of all minivans we looked at, the Odyssey was by far the best value with outstanding engine performance in all driving terrains & conditions. The 3rd seat is great with its stowaway capability. If you remove the center seats you can fit a queen size air mattress completely under the 3rd seat with the air plug accessible from the rear hatch; the mattress will extend all the way up to the front seats covering the entire floor area. This is a great configuration for long distance travel. My wife & I are about 6'6" and can completely stretch out side-by-side to sleep comfortably.

Our tranny gave out at 71K. Lucky for the extended warrantee. The failure was very fast with little warning. I am not happy with the fit and finish of this van. Paint chips easily, dashboard has very thin color coating which scratches easily. rattles and shakes abound. Anti-theft key system failure left us stranded for two days early on.

This vehicle was a great choice for my family. It rides like a car, yet looks nothing like one. It fells rock solid while driving. It feels on a par with many SUV's on the road. Gas mileage is not great, but its not a pig either. The only problem I encountered was with the door seals on the sliding doors. The R/S door sometimes sticks so bad it feels like you may break the door handle both in/out if you force it. The dealer says silicone spray is the best way to fix the problem. I had a pollution control go bad after the 36,000 mile warranty...but it was covered by law. Due to the safety rating I will most likely buy another new next year.

Our van has been wonderfully reliable, never leaving us stranded, but it has a few rattles and noises that we're not used to seeing with our other Hondas. A rattling lock on one of the power doors, and a squeay, creaky front passenger seat that 5 dealer trips didnt fix. Other than that, it is more fun to drive than my smaller, seemingly sportier accord.

Excellent family vehicle. Not the two seater sports car I really wanted, but great roomy vehicle for family vacations. Great van. Handles well for a minivan. Comfortable, roomy, reliable (aka. Honda!). Engine is one of the smoothest and quietest made. Our one gripe is with the power sliding doors. Although they are a great feature, we have had more than our share of problems with them not working. We've had to have them repaired a half a dozen times or so (I've lost track!). Our van may be the exception. Otherwise, a great minivan.

To the dealer several times, new tires, "special balancing", alignments, and now finger pointing on who is at fault (Tire manufacturuer or Honda) I'm trading it in for an SUV! Never gain with Honda. P.S. The service checks are a joke! $375 to change the oil and "inspect" a bunch of parts including the brakes which had to be changed two weeks after the service check. Good luck!

In our Ody, if someone is reading with one of their individual seat lights, those lights do not go off, even if you turn off the engine, leave the car, and lock it with the keyless entry system. So, the light stays on until the battery is drained. This is a definite design flaw since this is a common problem. It's happened 3-4 times with me when one of the kids leaves the lights on, we park in the bright garage, get out, lock all doors, and don't realize it's on until the next day when eveything's dead.

It's a good van and serves family needs well. Some minor problems here. Auto sliding doors were stuck several times but all worked later magically. Gas mieage is very low (17/21). Fuel capacity seems at 15-16 gl but not the 20 gl spec. Anyone has this problem? Seats are too soft. Rest arms are not much useful (too small & low). Persistent nozzle spray type noise coming from engine compartment @ 50mph cruise is annoying. Service rep says it's not gear grinding but injection related with every '01 model year. Surprised! Other than these, it's a perfect van.

For the first 3 years, back to the dealer 3 times per year to fix power doors...got stuck at Disney World & on the highways (ignition switch problems)...replaced transmission @ 40K miles...trans stopped working again at 54K miles...looks like we will need a new trans again @ 61K. Understand that my previous van was a 95 Windstar, so it didn't take much for my next vehicle to impress me. Overall, I think the HO is a good van. I feel very safe transporting my four children in it. I am annoyed by the inconsistent power sliding doors. They stick too often. I haven't had the brake or transmission problems others have mentioned. I have, however, had problems with some of the interior features and I think it's extremely noisy on the road. I find the front seats to be uncomfortable on long trips. I have had trouble with the exterior dinging too easily as well.

Everything has been fine with our van save one thing. Those d*** automatic doors. They are forever having intermittent problems. Frequent trips to the dealership and still problematic. Usually they close, just the buzzer keeps going off. Sometimes they just don't close all the way. A fraction of an inch from shutting. Very frustrating and probably the 2nd reason I'm about to get rid of it. (1st is the fact that it's about that time) However everything else works great. Engine still quite as ever. We bought our Odyssey just after our first son was born. It's been fantastic. We decided on the LX because we were afraid of having power sliding doors with a toddler around the house. This hasn't been a big issue. Our favorite features are 1) roominess, 2) 3rd row folding seat and 3) good power. The biggest downside, fuel economy. We average <15 mpg around town. I love ths van especially the GPS. I thought the GPS would be just a neat toy but now both my wife and I agree we never want another car without one. I'm surprised Honda doesn't tout it more. The fold down rear seat is great. But I do have trouble with the rear window wiper - it keeps coming loose and I have to have the dealer tighten it. Ride is a little stiff compared to my Avalon but not bad for a van. The seats are a little short. I could use a little more leg support for long trips. Accelerates nicely. My kids love that they can control the AC in back. Have had zero trouble with the auto sliding doors unlike some other reviews I have seen here.

Little less than expected

Had a Civic. Ran for 250,000 carefree miles. Odyssey is comfortable and roomy. Problems: ~ Has constant knock. Dealer says Honda only wants us to use Chevron gas per internal memo. ~ Sliding door seals had to be replaced due to sticking. ~ Needed front brakes at 30,000 miles likely due to vehicle weight. Numerous brake sensor errors. ~ Various trim flaws requiring trips to dealer. ~ Pulls to the right but dealer swears it is due to the crown in the road. Uneven tire wear. ~ Rough shifting in certain situations. ~ Radio controls blocked by gear shift column.

I switched to the Honda so that I could feel safe that my wife and children were in a dependable car. Three transmisions (within the first 30,000 miles), cooling system fix, four door handles, and a variety of other annoyances later, and I would not recommend this to ANYONE! The van looks good and drives nice, but not worth the worry. My wife has no sense of security.

Have 47000 mi, original owner. No towing, only normal driving around Illinois (ie, no hills). Transmission started making slight grinding noise in 4th gear only at about 55mph. If in 3rd, no noise. If you let off gas, no noise. Dealer had it today and the carrier bearing in the transmission is going out and the whole transmission needs to be replaced. I have the extended warranty which will pay for it as well as a rental car. Listen carefully to yours when crusing around 55mph.

We have had the van for 2 years and have enjoyed owning it more than any other vehicle we have ever had. The van has plenty of get up and is very comfortable on long trips and just around town. Ample room for seven adults wich we have had on many occations.

I have had my van for about a year now. It's great! We have put many miles on our van because my husband's job was about 400 miles away from home. He would drive the van back and forth to come home on weekends. The van did great! We have absolutely no complaints! I plan on keeping this van for a long time and when I am ready for a new car I am planning on getting a new Odyssey!

I am quite surprised to hear so many have problems with their van. Our 2000 LX has performed without a glitch. I couldn’t be more pleased to drive this van. I’ve driven vans from Dodge, Ford, Mazda, and Chev. All don’t hold a candle to this van— especially the loose-goose Dodge.

Good van overall. We bought it new and have put about 40,00 miles on it. The doors stuck for the first summer we had the van. The transmission shift control is directly in front of the stereo on/off/volume control. The stereo sux! I can't believe for a vehicle in this price range that you have to unscrew the antenna to go through a car wash. Also, no way to secure rear wiper in a car wash. Middle floor mat frayed within the first year.

I had nothing but trouble with the automatic sliding doors. Had to have it declared a lemon to finally get them to replace the entire door mechanism. Drives like a car and is easy to drive and maneuver, but the finishes are cheap inside. Transmission shifts really hard. Would never buy another. Know at least 10 other owners that feel the same way - all had door troubles too. Would never recommend it.

Performance is very good for a minivan but wish it had the 240 hp motor and 5 spd. that has only now been installed in the '02. Interior usability and flexibilty is unrivaled among minivans or any other vehicle type. Love the fold-down rear seat. This is a great all day 90 mph cruising machine.

We bought this van to replace a 1995 Taurus wagon, which at the time I thought was the biggest piece of garbage on the road. This van is vying for the title. In the two years since we bought it, we have had to repair/replace the front brakes/rotors twice (the entire brake design is undersized for the car), replace the entire transmission (leaky sway bar), replace rear wheel bearing, fix leaky valve cover gaskets, and repair defective sliding doors. It is an adventure to try to predict what will fail next...

It's green, so it's a lime, not a lemon.

While this vehicle has great features, especially with its interior and its engine, the overall experience has been akin to owning a Yugo Minivan. My Honda, in 35k miles, has gone through 3 snapped door handles. The brakes failed in the middle of the Lincoln Tunnel (with the entire family on board). The horn shorted out, locking the wheel (at 4k miles!) The original tires lasted less than 25k miles. The body dents under pressure from small children and hard stares. Honda of North America has been very difficult to deal with. Look elsewhere.

What a disappointment!

Two years later, it's been back to the dealer 8 times for auto door problems, 3 times for a consistent pull to the right, and 3 times for shuddering brakes. It has all of 24,000 miles. They have replaced the brake pads, rotors, and drums and the entire electronic system in the doors. They sent a district engineer to look at it and kept it a week two separate times without really fixing all the problems. The brakes still have a shudder. Beware of Honda Care, they refused to buy it back! It misses the Texas Lemon Law by a technicality. I have a 15- year old Camry that has had fewer problems than this van. What a disappointment!

My wife has driven the EX w/Navi since new. The navigation system is extremely useful and user friendly. We've had only two irritants. 1. The rear AC knob has broken off twice. Poor design in my opinion. 2. A piece of the roof rack fell off. The dealer did fix both items under warranty. We are no longer under warranty.

This is the one vehicle I have owned (of many) that I feel was money well spent after years of ownership. No major drawbacks other than the lack of options like leather and a DVD when I bought it. A minor annoyance is the road noise on the expressway but maybe better tires would fix that problem.

We have had our van for exactly 2 years now. We had to replace the battery, had a clunking behind the right front wheel that needed to be fixed and the electric doors got stuck once. I agree that the stereo system is not so great, and the swooshing of the gas when the tank is full is a bit annoying. The controls for the front seat could be placed better, I'm forever pressing the button that moves the seats on my way out of the van. On the positive side, it's a great van and has a great ride. It's powerful and the fold-down 3rd seat is the best!! You never have to plan ahead when making a big purchase, just fold that seat down and your good to go.

Okay, power rear doors are a bit much but overall this is the greatest family minivan available. Safety second to none. Lots of power for hauling, and 3500 lb. towing capacity. Good stereo, comfortable/useful/adjustable seats, and that wonderful flat rear floor, 4' x 8' with the seats flat/out. Strong climate control-- the only thing I wish I could change is the fuel mileage. But it's still at the top of its category in that department as well.

This is truly a van dream come true. I have owned Hondas and have driven them for up to 275,000 miles! This is one reliable van. We have never had any problems with the engine (have 42,000 miles now), but I do have to complain about the doors sticking. The molding sticks to the door and the kids can't open it without my help-- especially worse in the summer. Gee, should've gotten those automatic doors, I guess! Other than that, it is awesome. LOVE LOVE LOVE the disappearing back seat-- tons of cargo room (far better than other vans). Would I buy another one? You betcha!

This is my first Honda. My expectations were very high based on what I have heard from other Honda owners. I have already had 4 problems, 2 of them minor. The non-powered sliding doors stick and I had to have the lower control arm re-torqued. On the more serious side, the paint under the front bumper is pealing and the battery failed. I am going to buy an extended warranty because it does not appear the re-designed Odyssey is of typical Honda quality.
