The ztec is a great little engine. my car has 162000 miles (260000km). originally paid 16280 ttl included. i've been through two sets of all weather tires and two sets of winter tires (pass driving is much easier with snow tires). I've replace the brakes twice, one set of struts, timing belt replaced (yes, it is a necessary maintenance item at about 100K. two sets of spark plugs, an EGR valve and an O2 sensor and tie rod ends thanks to the crappy seattle roads. Oil changes every 5000 miles and transmission oil changed every 30K miles. I just replace the batter for the second time in 15 years. It's been a super inexpensive car to own. and I rely on it for 350 mile trips on a regular basis. If you find a well maintained 2000-2004 SW with a ztec engine, it should be a fine car to own and drive.

Seriously has been the worse car I have ever owned. I bought this car as a salvage title (front end damage, but no engine damage). It had around 80,000 miles on it. At around 107,000 miles the timing belt snapped - it's a zero tolerance engine - so the whole engine was destroyed. Mechanic says a new engine is around $1000 plus - with 30,000 mile warranty - well I won't get another used car with that, and I figure I should be able to get a 100,000 miles out of new engine - wrong. I hit about 70,000 miles and same thing - catostrophic damage to engine with the timing belt snapped again and put a rod through the engine block. I will never buy Ford again if they can't produce an engine

Mine was good

My focus has been going strong for 184k miles, which probably isn't the norm. It idles rough from an unbalanced engine. The power locks and a/c don't work. The headlights are easily scratched and get really dim. The hatch doesn't hold open in the cold. I've had to replace the ignition ($300) struts ($400) ball joints ($500) and vacuum hose ($80) in the 60k miles I have owned it.

Very Reliable, Very Forgiving, and Very Good MPG

159k miles now. 37Mpg hwy . Replaced coil pack, brakes, and thermostat housing were the only normal maintenance items. The sporty look and functionality of the ZX3 Hatchback still makes me happy. After 10 years of owning the 1st year made Focus, our daughter ran off the road through a ditch and cut down a few small trees with this car. She was unhurt, the Focus was bent but not broken beyond repair. A motor mount, a tie rod, a tire, and some exhaust rebending put her back in good balance. Yes, and some body work on the rear quarter... but that was the only real big expense. Everything was repairable by the weekend warrior skills of good neighbors. Great car !

Honda hatch 1.8 vtec honda crx with a 1.8 gsr so my focus can take them. Over all car has been great no major issues with motor has passed all smogs with no problems iys still runs at 14.67 :1 afr i get 35-40 mpg high way even at 3000 rpm

Great commuter car.

I owned my focus for awhile now and I am well over 200k miles and it still runs like new and can drive anywhere while still getting great gas mileage. On average I get about 29-30 with mixed driving. The car is very reliable and has never let me down the only things I needed to replace on it was the 14 year old brake booster and a radiator hose that dry rotted. As long as you maintain the fluids and drive the car normally it should last you 200k miles+. Enough room to comfortably fit 3 adults and a 4th with a little effort. The car does great in the snow with the right tiers on the front. If your looking for a nice affordable car for daily driving look no further.

Got car in August 2011 with only 48,000 miles. 8 months and 10,000 miles later and I've had no issues. I have a pretty basic model with an automatic transmission. Gas mileage is good. Especially on the highway. I can fill the car up and the gauge doesn't even start to move for 78 miles. I've gotten a little over 370 miles to a tank with mixed city/highway driving. I've yet to drive it on a long trip but I'm sure it would easily go over 400 miles! My only concern with the car comes from what I read on the internet. I have the SOHC engine, aka SPI (split port injection) and according to the internet, they tend to drop valve seats. I'm hoping this doesn't happen to me. I love my Focus.

Very reliable vehicle!

Very reliable! I have had my Ford Focus for 12 years and have never had any major problems Awesome gas milage at 32 mpg. I am six foot and it is a very confortable for me. My kids who are 5 ft. 5in. and 5ft. 6in. sat in the back seat for three hours driving to detriot with no complants. Has 200,000 miles on it and it still runs good. For its age it is still very stylish. Takes my wife to work 30 miles a day and only have to fill up the gas tank once a week. I would strongly recommend this car. Just gave it away for a 2008 for a newer 2008 Focus

I bought the car in 2003 with 70000. I now has 282000 miles on it and still runs good. Original clutch and no major repairs of any kind. The only problems was front spring which was recall and some electrical harness issues due to salt spray. Other than this just wear and tear items normal with putting lots of miles on a car. I have looked at and rented the 2nd and 3rd Gen Focus and they just do not compare to how good the 1st Gen is.

My 2000 Ford Focus is the only vehicle that I've bought brand new ... on an angry whim when another Ford I owned broke down one too many times. Turns out, it was a great move. I've had it now for 12 years and it has 335,00 miles on it. I'm shooting for 400,000! More importantly, other than routine maintainance, the car has only had mechanical problems 3 times in all those years and miles (a broken fan belt, and two failed alternators). That's it! There are some minor things that have eventually failed, such as a CD player which, for some weird reason, only allows me to change CDs the first thing in the morning. I still drive it daily for work. I still drive it daily with no fears.

I bought my Focus as my first car in 2003 with 43,000. We've had one big issue - which was an electrical issue. I think it was a glitch for it being the first model year.. but once that was figured out this car was a dream. Fast forward 9 years to a week ago. I was driving at highway speed when someone came into my lane, I avoided them, but lost control of the car - I hit the center barrier of the highway, spun across the highway, hit the sound wall on the right shoulder and landed in the right shoulder. Car was totaled, obviously, but held up with no major damage to the cabin, and I walked away with only minor injuries. I love that car more now than I did 10 years ago.

Loved it

I just want to start by saying i love my Ford Focus. Ive had the car for about a week, bought it used. I only have replaced very minor things such as the sway bar links, needs tires. But really the car is great, fun and easy to drive. I have heard all the "ohh its Ford" comments but really its a great little car, and great gas mileage!

Fun little car, I must say.

I got the car about two years ago, from my aunt who is possibly the worst car owner on the planet. The car was broken down, barely running, dirty, everything was broken. I got my hands on it, and about 1300 dollars later, it was running good. The best part about this car is how fun it is to drive. I can take off faster than half of the cars my friends have. The car feels alive, you can feel it. I just wish it was a little bit better quality. The interior is nice, but cheap. You can tell. The outside is styled well, but it's also made with some cheap-looking parts. It also feels like it won't be running so good in a few years. Who knows, it might last me forever.

We parted ways on our 10 year anniversary :(

I loved this car. I bought it slightly used in 2001 for 8K. Had it paid off in 3 years. I learned to drive standard on it. It took me to Humboldt County in California for college. Later, Sacramento. San Francisco. Nevada. Texas! Other than routine maintenance, expenses were incredibly minimal. Gas mileage was a dream. Just this year things started falling apart @130K mi. (Computer needs total re-calibration; dies at idle; other problems.) I did hope to get more mileage out of it, but I can't complain-- this car hardly cost me anything for an entire decade! It saw me through my entire 20's, and it's near the end of its life. I'll shed a tear in a couple of days when I scrap it for parts.

Well balanced, handling and solid feel without the road noise !!! Overall a great designed and attractive hatchback. Ford Focus ZX3 got daughter home in her 1st blizzard at nite. Drove me to work for 8 years x 70miles each day. 5 very long trips over 1000 miles. I even slept in the back for 2 nites. Now at 112k miles, everything still works fine. I did change the following once: Battery, Brakes, Tires, Thermostat housing, Belts, hoses, filters, front tie rod links, and plugs. Nothing on this car is hard to work on either.

I had this car given to me by my dad and he said it was a good car. Well it might have been a good car when he had it but it seemed that from the time I took hold of the keys everything fell apart. First 100 miles struts break $600. 300 miles power steering pump $300. 500 miles wheel bearing $500. 1000 miles Transmission slips estimated $2000. luckily someone hit me and totaled it (no one was hurt) it always started rough. for your own sake don't buy it. if you do and keep it driving for a year you will put more repairs into it than it's worth. i bought a Grand Prix GT with the money much happier with it. more power + less repairs = happier customer

I miss my Focus, I was in an accident with a chevy silverado last summer and she was totaled. The interior was nice, the seats were comfortable and I had no problems with it driving 1200 miles one way to visit family back east. My problems with my Focus were the fuel pump going out at about 110,000k, the air conditioner going out at 130,000, power locks going out at 120,000. As far as reliability, maybe I didn't have power locks there at the end but she took me to work every day for 6 years. I'd buy another focus, same color and year if i could find one. I am now in a 2003 vw beetle and boy do I miss my ford!

A lot of people bash the focus for being an unreliable car. When I bought mine as a used car it had 87,000 miles on it, two and a half years later it had 188,000 miles on it, it was my first good car. It's fast, reliable, has a great suspension and a great stereo. I beat the wheels off of this car, I delivered pizza in it and did other things you should not do to a compact car in it, any other car would have not withstood the abuse I gave it. I sold it and it is being enjoyed by someone else today. Only complaint. no armrest! this older model is better than the new ones they have out!

We really enjoy the car! Our best gas mileage on a long trip 41 mpg with an average off 38 mpg. We have 205/55/r16 tires. The work that had to be done on was all done at the dealership. We had to replace the motor at 200,000 with a broken valve seat. I will say nothing bad about the car.

This car was just totaled and that's the best thing that ever happened to us. We have spent so much money on it: engine, lock cylinder, window motors, etc, etc. There really is not much good that I can say about it. I looked it up on the Ford website and it was the second worst Ford ever made and the worst Focus ever made. It had over 100 recalls! Stay away from this car!

I got the Focus in 2000. Other then it not having as bomb a sound system as the commercial made out it ran well and was a perfect tight handling city car. Great gas mileage. It wasn't until the care was 6 years old that it needed attention. (right after the warranty ended haha) I replaced the spark plugs, break pads and starter solenoid in the decade I've owned her. Not bad eh? I will say that at nearing 11 years old with 190,000. miles. on it. She's nearing retirement. But this was my first new car. It was a good experience, those to trash it on here might of got a lemon and had no sense to return theirs but overall, Ford Focus is a good line. For its time, 00 Focus was futuristic and fun.

I have bought from my uncle three months ago. Since this I had repair the water pump, and big problems with the electrical system, I have replaced the coil, crankshaft, and other problems with the fuse box. Too many issues for a little time. Ah, otherwise the mechanics complain because the space in the engine is very small, then the repair cost could be more expensive. Apart of that the car have a excellent exterior design, is very comfortable, and have a good performance.

Purchased new, this car has proved to be economical, fun to drive, and very reliable. Original tires lasted 55K and replacements were good for 78K. The rear brakes were replaced at 125K even though they had 15% wear left. Am getting 50,000+ on front pads. City mpg 25+ and hwy 32. There were many recalls but all were completed to my satisfaction. Stranded twice when ignition lock seized, replaced the alternator, motor mounts, and timing belt (although it was in great shape at 133,000 miles, the spring tensioner was shot). A leaking valve cover gasket ruined the thermostat housing, but was able to perform these repairs myself. An excellent buy that I hope to drive for another 10 years.

I had this car 7 1/2 years, over 100K miles, and ran it into the ground. I think I performed major maintenance once, at 60,000 mi. I replaced the brakes twice, rotors once. It only had one problem ever, where oil was dripping on something and I could smell it through the vents. Easily fixed. I was in a collision and the car was minimally damaged with the exception of the airbags. I was really hard on the exterior: it sustained a lot of damage, but still always ran like a champ. I traded it for a Subaru AWD when I moved to NH because it slid a lot in the snow cause it was light. But if the Focus came in AWD and still in a hatchback, I would be driving one of those instead! Loved this car!

I was in my first car accident, not just a fender bender, I have a few contusions, 2nd degree burn, and two strains one in my back and the other in my neck. I could have came out a lot worse, the EMS on site told me the air bags and everything worked the way it should have. I'm still scared but thank goodness that this was all that I came out with. Its normal to get a burn from the air bag the ambulance said. I'm planning on buying another ford focus for my new car. They are fairly reliable.

I really want to love this car. It has not left me stranded yet. But since I purchased it with 90K 2 years ago, I have put in nearly $4000 in repairs. None to my negligence. So buyer beware. The first year of the Focus is the most problematic. I will say that it has plenty of power and features for a small car. The wagon has tons of space as well.

I think is a pretty decent car for the price I paid. I have read the reviews and I agree with some of the problems listed here. The brakes system vibrates and there is a light that comes on when I turn too sharply or hit a bump. I think this is a good car for someone without kids because the two door deal is uncomfortable at times for the ones seating in the back. I have seated in the back, nonetheless, and it is spatious, just kind of a pain to get in and out. Overall it is pretty handy, good design, the 5 speed may be better than the automatic transmition. I owned a Taurus for 2 years and the transmition broke down.

I bought the car in 2007 for my wife and before I went to the Coast Guard, the engine fell apart. Two rebuilds from valve seats dropping and I had enough. After 4,500 dollars rounded I had enough. Please think about this car before you buy. Ford did not recall the valve seats in the cylinder head. Get anything above 06 and that includes all I-4's in Tauris too. 99- 05 are all bad. Just I-4's though. Huntchbacks are fine...

Car has 155,000 miles. Up to 100,000 miles no problems. In the last 50,000 things started wearing out. Replaced everthing in the brakes (about time) replaced A/C, power steering pump, alternator, engine mounts, ignition key switch, plugs, plug wires, coil, belt and one power window mech-anism. Thats about it These things don't last forever. Now at 155,000 the engine blew so I am going to install a used engine. This little car has always run great, good mileage and reliable transportation. Its still like new so it deserves a new engine which I plan to install. Like any car there are some lemons out there but mine is not one of them so I'm keeping it for another 100,000.

I purchased this car as an inside deal. It has been towed 3 times. The fuel pump went out, the fuel line leaked, the ignition went out, the front coil springs broke, exhaust is load, replaced catolac convertor, the number three piston went out (needs new motor). I sold it to the junk yard to a sucker for 250.00. I will never buy another ford. Oh... Two of Focus friends also had the same problems. This is the worst car ever. When the fuel pump goes bad, you can't let the fuel level drop below half a tank. That makes long trips fun. Don't buy it so Ford will stop making it.

This car was a nightmare. It had constant electrical problems, and a piston shattered at 120K miles. The mechanic told us that commonly happens even after only 40K miles. And once the new engine was put in, it made it a whole week before it started leaking oil like crazy. I told the poor lady who bought it from me about all the problems I knew it had, and gave her all the paperwork from all the repairs I'd had to make, but she called me the next day to ask for her money back because it started in with a new electrical problem. Horrible car.

This is just a bad car. I bought brand new in 2000. The first two years I spent more time getting recalls done then driving. Then at about 100k miles the car fell apaprt. New clutch, front springs broke, battery, battery cables, battery itself, ac, heater, alternator, the list goes on. I've spent over 6k in the past two years trying to keep this car on the road. Please don't buy an early mondel focus. It will just be a money pit.

This is my first car, and so far, for the 1000 dollars I spent, (including purchase price, and the coil pack.)I am pretty happy. Car is quite and runs smooth. Good gas mileage, and very fun to drive.

Bought this car in 2005 with 48k miles, now has 90k. Got great gas mileage up until about a year ago (avg 32 mpg mixed), now gets 22-24. Auto trans may be dying; shifting is labored. Have had to replace ignition lock (50k miles), coil (55k), a drum brake (65k--some kind of part that held it together WENT MISSING and the shoe was scraping the drum), motor mount (85k). Have had to put way too much money into this car since I got it, $1000+ for things that shouldn't break. Very concerned about the poor gas mileage lately; mechanics can't figure it out. Have had fuel system flushed but no change. Back bumper also lost a screw and is sagging. Looking for a Civic or Corolla now.

Purchased this car new in 2000. In the first year, we suffered through a few recalls and had the fuel pump replaced a couple of times. However, it seems everything has been fixed, because there have been no problems with the car since the warranty expired. It has only been in the shop for oil changes and other regular maintenance. Its not new anymore, but I can't justify getting a newer car when the old one is still reliable and gets very good gas mileage for an 8-year old.

The car was bought used and was only two years old at the time of purchase. After only 5 months of owning the car I discovered a major problem with loss of vehicle power during turning at a normal speed, which later became a recall on this vehicle. (Almost had several collisions due to this problem) The first time I called the Ford Co. about the problem they said their had been no similar reports. Also I had taken the car to the dealership 3 times for repair of this problem, which was finally solved when Ford sent me a recall notice. This was the first of several other recalls I had to have fixed. Every year something major has gone wrong, costing usually around 1K. Please spare yourself!

My wife bought this car new, before we met. I would never have bought a Ford. We had to replace the tires, brakes and rotors and needed a four wheel alignment at 25,000, We replaced the fuel pump at 50,000 and the trunk leaked but warranty covered seal replacement. When I replaced the spark plugs, the wires were bad. Ford used cheap parts. I changed the oil (Syntec) every 3000 mi. The transmission is exotic for a Ford so I made sure to get it serviced every 30K mi. We now have 107,000 and this car is still running very strong. same power as when it had 15000. no major problems, just general wear after replacing cheap factory parts. Do the scheduled maintenance and car should last years.

A few problems here & there.

I bought my car from a used car dealership. It's been pretty good. I keep having trouble with it's engine though. Somehow the tps sensor, or something like that isn't reading anything from my engine. So my acceleration reallly really stinks right now. My horn also stopped working--not good, at all. I had a little problem a couple months ago with my abs--it ended up to be a loose wiring problem. Which has been happening a lot. Other than that, I love my Ford Focus. I think it is acting up just cause it has a lot of miles on it. It gets really good gas mileage. I drive it a lot. And I still only have to fill it up, on average every 1 and a half weeks.

Since the car hit 60,000 miles it's been in and out of the shop constantly. With no warning, the clutch dropped out while I was driving 65 mph down the highway. Repair bill: $600. One of the parts they replaced broke again within two months. That was covered by a warranty, but it was still a pain and a safety issue. Then the fuel system went out, leaving me stranded. Thankfully, covered by a recall, but still a pain and a safety issue. Then the key wouldn't go into the ignition, again leaving me stranded. Repair: $300. Headlight wiring melted: $50/light. Air bags dysfunctional. Now the electrical is screwed up and the car dies unexpectedly at varying speeds while I'm driving it. What's next?

It should of been a red flag from day one. When I test drove the car. But I was in need of a car so I purchased the car. And since then it has been a nightmare. I have had this car for 10 months now. And I have put in over 1,000 in repairs. Timing belt went out 3 months after I got the car. 3 months later ignition lock had to be repaired. Right now it is actually in the shop. Shakes a lot. Engine light keeps coming back on. Has leaks. I still have a year to pay it off. I recommend never, ever buy a used ford. They are a nightmare and you will regret it. Bought the car because we needed a small wagon for commuting. At the time of purchase very little existed in the market for choice. Ford had brought the Focus design from Europe to the states and we liked its crisp lines and the fact that it was a wagon. We found my 6'4" frame fit comfortably in the cabin and the responsive road handling fun to drive. We had the recalls from Ford fixed and thru the years of ownership I have had only a few unexpected repairs. Overall I found preventive maintenance is the key to the 150000 miles of service this car has provided. I expect to own the car another 150000 miles before I aquire a new replacement. We are pleased with its performance and reliability.

I was the first owner of my Focus and the last. I loved the car and will miss it. Had a few recalls. The down part was had to replace motor at 90,000, always felt like was putting new tires on the car due to some alignment issues (mechanics could never figure it out) and had trouble with the exhaust. Up to recently was doing good and out of no where the motor went again only 70,000 miles later. I hated to give it up but hate to keep putting work into it. Had to give it up and look for a new one. Would I buy another Focus? Yes I would but not the new ones, think they are ugly.

It's been a great first car. Had a few recalls, but Ford fixed them all no charge. Other than that, just replace a sensor or two (I have 90k miles) wheel bearings, brakes. But those are all wear items, so its not really a problem. Never left me stranded. OK power with the Zetec DOHC engine, 0-60 in a 5-speed takes under 9 seconds, which is fine for freeway merging. Handles great for such a cheap car, very fun when the road gets twisty.

Handles like a good rally car. It can take corners at speed, but has a slightly higher ride height than other vehicles of the same size. I replaced the swaybar(stabilizer bar) bushings with stiffer polyurethane for a little less body roll. I have driven this vehicle for 7.5 years and have enjoyed it immensely. Sure, some things had to be fixed under recall, and some things broke that I had to pay for after the warranty ended, but overall I am happy. I have had worse experiences with cars I bought new. The bucket seats are built for average frames or smaller. Wide shouldered or heavier people (250+ lbs.) will notice marked problems after several years

I can flip down the back seat and fill up the cargo area, tow a small trailer, put stuff on the roof rack or put passengers in the back comfortably - all while zipping around (zippy engine) getting great gas milage & being able to park anywhere! The ride is smooth & quiet, handles great, has comfortable roomy interior, and the exterior looks alot more stylish & modern than most other station wagons. I've put on many miles, keep up on maintance, but have had no problems. It is very reliable. A very fun & versatile car, and consumer reports rates it tops. All & all, I love this car!

Many recalls, and even one 1000.00 repair that was taken care of from a TSB report (coil springs). This car was very reliable and fun and easy to drive, great gas mileage. Always started, never broke down. The only repairs we had were recalls and the master cylinder went almost 2 weeks after we purchased, but it was under warranty. 165,000 miles and it's only now starting to have problems. I was a victim of the frozen ignition thing - if it's giving sticky warning signs, heed them! The timing belt isn't due until some ridiculous mileage, mine went at 155,000. If you are planning to keep the car long term, change it before Ford advises. No leaks of any kind, so far. I am a painter and have loved how much stuff I could cram in the back and still be able to park it in San Francisco, and the gas mileage is great. If you are looking at this used, try and find one where you can research the service history, I guess. I'm going to try and take this one to 200,000 miles.

This car is an absolute piece of garbage. I got it as a commuter car for nothing but highway driving. I drive 60 miles a day at 65 in a straight line. Where do I begin to describe the problems? The interior is cheap and flimsy. The radio dial literally melts in high heat. The car feels like it will fall apart at 65. Awful road noise. The seats seem to consist of a cloth, cardboard, and styrofoam mixture. Reliability is terrible. I had it in the shop for routine mechanical and electrical problems every 6 months. It once shut off on a highway, literally turning off at 60 mph. Do not, under any circumstances, buy this car. Spend the extra money on a civic and save on repairs.

I bought this car brand new, and have owned it for almost eight years. It's been a blast to drive and way, way more reliable than my previous car (Toyota Corolla). Only major complaint was an ignition lock problem in year seven, which by then was out of warranty and cost $250 to replace. Being a 1st year model it had a few recalls but they were fixed quick, free, and easy. Fuel economy (23 city, 33 highway) was a little lower than expected. Handling was a MAJOR positive surprise. Braking fine, replaced once at 51K. Front and Rear headroom impressive - a friend who is 6'3" fits in the back seat with no complaints... and he even works for GM. 5-speed manual shifts fine, clutch is a breeze.

Test driving the ZX3 with manual transmission sold me on this car's fun to drive qualities. However, having owned many cars (including 3 Fords) I can honestly say this car was the biggest lemon I ever had the displeasure of owning. Over the course of 84k mile ownership I replaced the AC system, valve cover gasket, ignition mechanism, EGR valve. The car was fun to drive and got great gas mileage but left me stranded more times than every other car I have owned combined. Amazingly, mechanics and tow truck drivers could usually guess what my problem was because they had seen so many Focus with the same issues. It feels like the sun has shone brighter every day since I got rid of it!

I've been driving my little ZX3 for seven years now. It has been a wonderful little car. Yes, it's true that I it had some recalls, but that's all over with. I can haul almost anything that I want. The purchase price and the cost of gas still don't add up to the cost of a hybrid. It will carve Highway 55 with the best of them and I'll pass them at the pump, because I'm getting 35 mpg. It has spunk in the city and cruises easily on the highway. The stereo rocks. In seven years I've replaced the battery, window crank and the ignition switch. I'm very sad that Ford isn't bringing back the ZX3 in '08, so I'm selling and purchasing a new '07. Here's to another seven years!

I will never again purchas a Ford vehicle. At 19 years old, the Ford Focus was the first vehicle that was truly 100% mine. Within the first week I received a notice in the mail regarding a fuel hose being recalled. It has all been downhill since then. I keep up to date with routine maintenance but in the past two years alone, I have had to replace the ignition, fuses, vents, seat adjustment handles, radiator, various parts of the transmission..the list goes on and on. Every time I brought it into the shop I was urged to get rid of my Focus. Thousands of dollars later, I'm finally listening! As soon as I trade this puppy in, I'm washing my hands not only of the Focus but of Ford entirely.

I have driven my car since I bought it because I was a single parent and could get free labor to fix it and could not afford to buy a new car. This car is really bad. It is great because it still runs but it had to have 2 ignition switches, countless brakes, rotors and tires every 20,000 miles. We have lifetime brakes now and it is eating them too. It had to have a new motor at only 90,000 miles in 2005. It dropped a valve seat. New oxygen sensors twice. It now shakes and rattles the dash sounds horrible.

Was working fine (power, mileage) until motor started to stall (and die) in the middle of the freeway (not fun). Ford dealer has no clue. Had 4 recalls performed, including a fuel delivery module replacement, and none solved the problem. Had to rent a car for 1 week while Ford tried to find the problem. In the end I bought a Toyota. Ford Focus 2000 is NOT a reliable car.

My ZTS handles great. It corners like crazy. I drive very fast to and from work everyday, and am happy with its reliability considering this. I know there are a lot of complaints out there about reliability, but I wonder if my luck has anything to do with letting the engine warm up with 1-2 minutes of idling every time I cold start.

When looking for my first car I wanted something affordable, reliable, and good looking. I bought it used with about 55,000 miles. And over the course of the last 4 years with this car I have replaced the ignition 2 times, replaced my alternator, had to have the trunk fixed because it wouldn't open, had my brake shoes fall off while driving (probably not a defect with the car, but it was one more thing I had to pay for), my power door locks broke causing the driver door to not open, which meant crawling through the passenger door. And the back door open sensor is busted. I have a power steering fluid leak. And a valve in the engine blew, which was approx $350 to replace. Just be wary.

The next day as I was driving to work the Ford nightmare had a fuel pump problem, and then the timing belt literally exploded and then oil leak and then fuel leak and then the AC broke down and then the water pump broke down and then the back power windows broke down and the car stereo broke down -- I had to hit it hard with my fist for it to function several times and then the Ford nightmare is a noise box and then and then and then. How many times did I say "and then" - I have lost count. Mayday Mayday Mayday DO NOT EVER BUY a FORD EVER Please...

I have had my Focus for 2 yrs now and I have actually driven it for 1.5 yrs because the rest of the time it was in the shop. The warranty company has put $5200 in repairs for the engine and suspension. The only thing that I like is the sound system, interior, and the exterior styling is ok. I have had alternator problems, starting problems (6 times for that one), cooling system, suspension, gaskets, and new steering column (1st week owned). The transmission is quirky and the vehicle has no power. THIS CAR WOULD RUN BETTER FLYING OFF A BRIDGE!!!

I love my Ford Focus. I really enjoy the way it drives--that was what convinced me to buy it in the first place. However, I wouldn't recommend it. Not this model at least. Later years seem to be a bit more reliable. My car was three years old when I bought it, and I have now owned it for three years. I have put thousands of dollars of repairs into it. It has needed brake work on two separate occasions, as well as a new starter. This is not an old car! As soon as I can afford it I will be looking for a new car.

Car is fun to drive, handles very well plenty of power (if you rev the heck out of it). The hatchback design is very useful. My son wrecked at 2 months and came very close to a total wreck, but it was fixed in the dealership body shop and we've put 135,000 miles on it since. No injuries, the car will take a heck of a whack. We've had a few problems, most attributable to damage from the wreck that wasn't caught (except for the drive train most of the front end, suspension included, was replaced) Fuel use is 28-32 mpg; average about 30. I realize some people have had a lot of trouble with these cars, but not us! One of the best we've owned.

I recently destroyed my 2000 Toyota Echo ... nothing ever went wrong with that car, I just was an idiot and crashed it. I had to buy a new car and immediately fell in love with my 2000 Kona Edition Ford Focus ZX3. I thought it was an upgrade from my Echo: power windows, power door locks, good sound, good pick up ... definitely a downgrade. Ignition doesn't release key all the time. Recall on fuel pump which before fixed caused engine to stall at 70mph on busy California freeway. Small plastic piece on window regulator broke window; taped up. Check engine light on & transmission problems. Grinding brakes all the time. Turn radio down and volume goes up ... list goes on and on.

It is beyond reliable. I've had it going on 2 years, put 13000 miles on it, drive it every single day, and it just gets better and better. I've only had to deal with a thermostat, 1 recall, one old dead battery and 1 old dead battery cable. Even with those problems though, it would get me where I needed to go, no matter what. I love it, and I haven't read any good reviews so here's one. Best Car Ever! And adorable to boot! Main points: uber reliable, and if something does go awry, VERY simple to fix.

The car is awful on gas, it currently leaks oil at 86000 KM's. It has its share of noises, but in the end it is reliable. Considering my 2000 Neon had bad spark plugs, broken springs, a rebuilt transmission, a new radiator and also leaked oil by the time it was 3 years old ... I can't complain. I love the little bubble design, which allows taller people to fit comfortably height-wise. The Zetec engine has enough power for its size, but mind you it's no racing machine. Finally, I can't stand how Ford has recalls that state "we will only pay if you know that this is the exact cause"... either you will replace a part that has been causing problems for Focuses or you won't.

Owned mine since new in 2000. Other than recalls that I think are positive, I've had a few minor repairs except for a transmission cylinder. Replaced front rotors at 50,000 miles of mostly city driving. Much less problems than 2 VWs I've owned but more than the Toyotas. But then again I only paid $13,500 new.

This was my first new car and it was a nightmare. Within the first three weeks it sound like my left rear wheel was about to fall off, my hazard lights kept blinking nonstop, my brakes kept sqeaking really loud all the time, the ignition cylinder broke, and I had to pay $100 for a pair of new keys because they have a stupid chip in them. My lumbar seat lever broke on both sides, my rear seat belts didn't work, my sun visor screws came out, my rear tail light cover melted because the light bulb over heated. These cars have really cheap parts. Same on Ford; you would think after all of these years of experience Ford has they would have made a better product.

I bought this new after having a great experience with a '93 Escort. There have been many recalls, transmission leak, ignition column broke, a hole in a PVC tube (at least this is what the dealer called it). Normally, I like to keep my vehicles for 100k miles, but it's broken down 3 times this year already. I will never buy a Ford again. The resale value is terrible too.

Back window motors needed to be replaced twice under warranty. After the warranty expired both back window motors broke AGAIN and the windows dropped into the back doors. They are now held up with tape. Get this ... it will cost $400 per door/window to replace. Ford doesn't care, it's out of warranty. Crazy. I can't leave anything of any value in the car since the car can't be locked. I refuse to pay $800 for this problem! It's their problem. Other than that I love the car.

I have owned this car for about 2 1/2 years, and I would have to say I have had my share of problems. A few months after I got it, I was left stranded because it just wouldn't start (only clicked). After replacing the solenoid at 30k miles the car did ok. The tires seem to wear down quicker then any other car I've had. About a year went by with no problems then I got a transmission leak at 55k miles. Can't forget about all the recalls including the fuel pump that died on me as well. Also about a month ago the ignition decided to lock up, leaving me stranded again. And just the other day my alternator went which cost $350. Besides that, the car isn't too bad. I would recommend a newer model.

I purchased my Focus in 2001 with 33,000 miles and had no problems for the first 6 months; from then on it's been down hill. Recall on the rear wheel bearings, recall on the battery cable that also blew my alternator and battery, all 4 power window mechanisms have broken ($500), the brake job cost $500 because you have to get new rotors EVERY TIME -- they can't be machined, the cooling system needed extensive repair ($2000-$3000), the electrical control for the air conditioner broke ($379), the CD player broke, haven't gotten that repaired yet, the ignition cylinder locked closed so I couldn't put the key in -- $1000 plus tow, and the trunk lock broke ($700). To make it short, over $7,000 in repairs thus far.

I'm a first-time buyer and I purchased this car used. Within the 1st month, water kept fogging up the headlights (dealer wanted to charge me $300). I've had to replace the brakes twice in 2 years, and the brake pedal squeaks (loudly), had two recalls, and it rattles, and it produces too much brake dust. The interior side panel broke already and the latch on the passenger seat broke so you can't adjust seating anymore. While some of these problems can be rather annoying, I still love the car. Leaking coolant after 33,000 miles; dealer replaced water pump twice. At 65,000 miles again leaking coolant; per dealer diagnosis thermostat housing froze and leaked. This ruined water pump. Dealer changed water pump, again twice. This suggested that quality of parts are bad. All total this car has had 5 water pumps for the first 65,000 miles. Car was taken to independent mechanic. After more tests to find cause of loosing coolant, it was determined that coolant was passing to cylinder and head repair has to be done. This problem is in addition to transmission electronic component failing, rear window not working, and the rough idling causing vibration.

I've had my Focus since I bought it new in 2000. Unless you really can't afford otherwise, I don't think that I would recommend it. Maybe I got a lemon, but every problem I've seen on this site, I've had, and it's only got 36,000 on it (after 5 years!). Lots of recalls, but major mechanical problems (heating core, trans, various bizarre coils and tubes and valves). You really don't save that much on the sticker after all of the repairs. Also, it was fast & fun to drive for the first two years, then consistently idled high, was sluggish and generally seems to be dying, despite going in for repairs once a month these days. Ford service (especially dealers) is abysmal. Sad part is that I'm attached to it.

Saucy car but breaks down after a year. It was awesome in high school, then i had to keep going for recalls to the dealership, and a noise from the rear wheel never went away - even after having the dealership fix it 3 times in a row! They probably just sit around and wish I would forget about the problem but it's difficult when you're driving with noise in the back of your car and you get embarrassed when people ask you waht the noises are. It's fun to drive but the road noise is killing me. I wouldn't be surprised if my hearing decreased due to this car. All my family buys is Fords but i am disappointed.

Its reliability has been 100% - I have never been left stranded. It rides and drives like a much more expensive car, and has plenty of leg and headroom for this tall, plus sized girl! Admittedly, I do favor Fords overall, but when I go to buy another car next year, it will most likely be another Focus.

Sad, but the Focus really soured me on all Fords. What hasn't gone wrong on this car? Despite the recalls just since I've had it, the $2400 transmission put in at 70K, the extra $1000 it will take for MORE O2 sensors, fuel gauge sensor, etc. and the additional $1,000 I've put in since I've had it (if you add it all up, it's about what the trade in is worth), I've had it with this car. Once one thing goes, everything goes.

Was hit in the front and back at low speed and held up great, can't say that about the Corolla that folded like a tent. Cramped front seat since I am 6 foot 2. I have 50,000 miles and the car hasnt had any major repairs but that is because I do routine maintenance and have a good mechanic. Wish car had more power and I wish everyday I upgraded to CD player instead of factory tape player. I thrash this car every day driving to LAX airport so it is my kick around car.

Lets see. At 15,000 miles i had to get new brakes and throttle body. At 45,000 miles I already replaced the oxygen sensor twice. I had to replace the shocks twice. The air conditioner broke, the heat sometimes worked, the wipers sometimes worked. At 73,000 I had to replace the transmission. At 74,000 my brakes failed. (They wouldn't work at all).

I am in the process of looking for a different car. I have had nothing but problems from this car from day one, and I bought it brand new. Tires, ignition, fuel pump, fuel lines, stereo, brakes, paint chipping, gas door, you name it, I have had it. Like other reviewers said, Ford does not care. I know it was the first year for this car, but they should fix what they have done wrong. It also has no power when air is on.

I bought my Focus the year it came out in 2000. I had about one good year until many recalls came out. I was stranded out of state when the fuel pump broke, and it wasn't until year later that I recieved a notice for recall for the fuel pump. I had the replace the head gasket and the water pump. Many valves leak and it has steadily lost fuel efficiency. I would not reccommed buying the Focus.

I have had the car for 3 months now, and I have to say; don't believe all these bad reviews. I am 6'2" and I fit into this car perfectly. I love the European styling and the ergonomical interior; everything is in its right place. Fit and finish is top notch. The car handles exceedingly well for its price class, which is what won it car of the year. Only issue I have had to deal with was a fussy ignition. Other than that, it starts on freezing cold mornings, gets me to and from work, feels very safe and sure footed in all weather conditions. If you get a 5 speed, it will make a tractor sound in low RPMs... this is normal and called gear rollover. Did I mention its a blast to DRIVE.

I bought this car new and ignition cylinder has had to be replaced 4 times. I put key in ignition and won't turn. As I'm sure it will happen again, I sell. Tired of getting stuck and towed to a dealer who tells me I don't know how to use a key! Also, brake problems and rear hatch lock goes twice. This car only has 41,000 miles. After owning a number of Ford products, won't buy one again. This car has been a terrible disappointment.

I have had four Fords before this car and I can easily say this is the only one I'm not satisfied with. I bouth it used with 20k on it. At 25k, a bad vibration started coming from the rear wheels. Now at 34k, the headlights turn on and off randomly and the automatic transmission slips out of gear when the lights shut off. Oddly this problem has no effect on the engine. My two Crown Victorias and my Escort were much better cars.

This is the most recalled vehicle in history. I get about a recall a month on this piece of junk. The rear wheel bearings have been replaced twice. The ingnition lock has siezed up twice. Each time, the key would not even go into the ingintion. I found 30 pages of people on the internet who have had the same problem, yet Ford refuses to issue yet another recall to fix it for free, and felt just great about charging me $500 to fix the ignition. Now the water pump has developed a leak. All of this in less than 4 years.

I drive this car 55 miles one way to work. For 85000 miles there have been no problems-just maintenance like filters, tires, and brakes. I have the leather seats, cd player, and whatever else comes on the ZTS. This is a huge step up from the Escort I was using for a work car, and in fact I actually declared when I bought it "This is way too nice for a work car". This is a great commuter car, and is much more stylish than the rest of this class. I plan on driving this car another couple hundred thousand miles, since my previous Escorts all surpassed 250000 miles without any major work. This is a great car!

Bought brand new, now at 118K, at the time there wasn't many options for a small wagon. Reliability has been AWFUL. O2 sensor is always malfunctioning ..check engine light can only be off for a week or so, learned to live with. Many expensive parts; ABS sensor, calipers, wiring, wheel bearings, front suspension. Now tranny starting to act weird, also many recalls have been tiresome (lost track, at least 10 of them). Perhaps Ford has worked out the problems, they now offer longer warantee, (we had 3 yr, 36k mile), but I don't appreciate paying to be a tester. Interior is cheap, stereo is cheap. Cup holders, WHO CARES? (they are bad though). Seats are like boards.

Bought new in September 2000 from award winning dealer. Brilliant design, exceptional ergonomics, fun to drive, versatile and large cargo capacity, but many recalls, brake problems, and air conditioner failed at only 29,000 miles and 6 months out of warranty ($1,500 to replace and only a 1-year warranty, so I won't do it). In Oct 2000 Consumer Reports rated the Focus second best of six wagons tested, and in April 2001 Consumer Reports rated the Focus the No. 1 small sedan. In both cases reliabity was not yet established.

This was my first car ever, and it will be my last Ford. Looks cute and is fun to drive, but quality is poor. Stuff keeps breaking: clutch master cylinder (at 20K), ignition switch (stranded at 40K; not fun), brakes (at 45K), cd player/radio cuts off for no reason (even after being sent for fixing), leaky radiator (66K), wiper speed is never right, makes weird crunching noise over speed bumps, brakes always squeaky! Plus, dealership service is not helpful. Takes forever to get recalls fixed, sometimes they don't even order the parts. I can't wait to get rid of this thing and would not recommend the Ford Focus to anyone.

This was really bad and almost left me stranded a few times, until the recall came to the rescue. Had to have radio fixed a few months after buying, and the radio piece still pops out randomly. I have only had one problem with my Focus, and luckily my Brother is a Ford technican, and advised me the fuel pump was being recalled. After reading some of these reviews I felt as if I needed to submit one to defend this car a bit! I'm not an avid supporter of any car make, rather a person who buys a car out of necessity! I drive alot! I've owned 7 new cars in the past and believe it or not,the Focus has been the best! Recalls don't bother me as long as the problems are corrected. This vehicle has 112,000 and still runs perfect. There may not be the same amount of zip when I first drove off the lot, but the Focus has been very good to me. There have been no major repair expenses other than brakes, tires, and a set of spark plugs and wires! So, don't believe all of the hype!

I have moved 3 times (all away from my purchasing dealer) since purchasing my ZX3. It has been through every recall and program (7 or 8 now, I think) and at each step I have had to bear the burden of ford dealers who treat each request for service as though it were MY faulty craftsmanship that created the service needs (1 exception, University Ford, Peoria, IL -great attitudes and service). But, I've moved again and I now take my vehicle to a local mechanic for EVERYTHING.

We like everything about it so far except for the gas milage, it's nothing close to whats advertised after a complete tuneup, oil change & filter, and air filter it's still only in the lower 20's. I owned this vehicle for just under four years and 85,000 miles. The recalls were annoying and I stopped getting them corrected, which actually led to one problem. The tires wear out quickly, as do the brakes. Ford did replace all the brakes free of charge after one year. I had the rear left wheel bearing break at about 70K miles. I think this was a recall issue. I had several problems with a bad battery cable causing the car not to start (or die in traffic). I think the car juiced batteries. I went through 3 in four years. Other than tires/brakes/wheel bearing, the only other problem was a broken air hose (about $125 repair).

When we bought this car, it seemed to have so many great features for an affordable price. However, not two months into it and with a brand new baby riding in it, the mechanical flaws rared their ugly heads. It seemed atleast once a month their was a recall on something mechanically vital or something would just not work, for example the key wouldn't come out of the ignition one day. Turns out the ignition was faulty and recalled. A year later, the key wouldn't go into the ignition. Turns out that ignition had been recalled too. It was fun at first, but after a couple of thousand miles, it just really starts to suck.

Most recent on fuel pump. Car can't be started to move just couple of feet in driveway or critical valve sticks and car won't restart. Dlr says drive around block to avoid problem. Prblm with wires in steering column caused exterior light failure on 2 diff. occasions. Brakes(rotors too) had to be replaced. Crz cntrl would not remain engaged; had to be repaired. Here's a partial list in order of importance: cruise control (3 times), Horn (twice), water pump exploding ($350), on-board computer system ($750), engine lights consistently staying on keeping me from passing emissions ($1000) and the worst of them all: the engine mounts breaking and my engine falling out! This ran me another $1,000. Also, I had two minor wrecks at less than 15 MPH. The damage due to those was amazing as the shoddy workmanship really showed. I couldn't have made a worse choice than the Focus.

There have been several recalls on this car including the rear wheel bearings. I wish I could get rid of this thing but the value has been dropping much faster than I can pay the car off. They have had to replace the complete breaking system after only about 25,000 miles and the wheel bearing went bad coming home on Christmas day with the kids in the car. I'm about ready to tell Ford Credit they can have their car back.

This car has been horrible!!! I have had it for just over a year and have have spent at least 500$ every other month on repairs. Ford seems to complicate their cars so that they are the only ones who can fix them half the time, and they are outragiously over priced!!! The anti-theft features are more of a hassle for the driver than the theft. Gas mileage is NOT as good as advertised. Looses value quickly!! I dug myself a hole with this one. Was very disappointed since the car had good reviews. Once again Ford has let me down... I'm going Honda. I'm upside down, but extra money now will be well worth the money I'll save in repairs.

My wife loved the car for about a year and a half. Until all the problems. We ruined the rotors at about 15k miles. I guess that is my fault for not checking the brakes, but I have never had a car that ran through breaks before 30k. Since that we have had well over $2000 in the car in three years. It has left my wife stranded twice(which sealed the deal). Currently, it is still not running. It's not starting sometimes. We will see how much this one costs. I have a total of 60k mi. Mostly highway. Since replacing brakepads, they have lasted well over 40k mi. Many of the problems that I have had, are also happening on my father's Winstar.

Obviously, this car is fairly new. But here's a few problems that I'm currently having: the break lights are stuck on; it randomly decelerates when I'm driving; it at times decides it doesn't want to go fast and takes (and i'm being quite literal here) 2 minutes to accelerate 20 miles per hour; it stalls when I try to merge; it stalled 8 times in 40 minutes tonight; it doesn't start in the rain. The car's less than 4 years old. Don't buy this car.

I bought this car new. In the 3 years (27,500 mls) I've had it, it's been more trouble than my 10 yr old Honda (+200,000 mls). Things that should work for a certain amount of time don't. The latest is the rear power window. The mechanism failed and now needs to be replace. This is just 3 weeks AFTER the wrnty expired. I've also had to bring it back for recalls - wipers and backseat latch. The stereo was replace too. On the other hand it is fun to drive. I love all the cargo room with the back seat down. It's easy to manuever, and it has some zip to it. It's cute and good back seat leg room. Won't buy another, but remember you get what you pay for.

I bought my Ford Focus before arriving to Germany in July 2000. It has been a good car except the fact that the stereo lasted only 37 months. The bumper to bumper warranty at 36,000 is too short for cars being built today. The gas milage has only been about 27- 29 on highways with an automatic transmission. Still this car has been great in Germany and I would buy another one.

My friend who owns a 2001 Honda Civic, has gone thru a blown transmission and some bad shocks. The whole thing about Japanese cars being better than American cars has been thrown out the window thanks to the innovation of the Ford Focus. Anyone who is looking for an economical car with some real go, then look no further than the Ford Focus.

No matter what is said and believed about Ford cars, Focus is a very good car. Fun to drive. In the city or over long distances. Music system and handling are great. Performance is quite satisfactory (ours had a ZETEC engine). Trunk space is appreciable. We got hit by two recalls which were taken care of without much hassle. Other than that, we had a leak in the power steering system once. That's it. No reason to hesitate to own one (especially if extended warranty is available). Sad to lose ours in an accident.

After being forced into buying a car on rather short notice by a wreck, I decided that what I wanted was a vehicle which was able to haul me and all of my crap, be economical, and still be fun to drive. The Focus Zx3 has lived up to all of that, with the exceptions of interior quality and fuel economy. The fuel economy is partially my fault, as it has been so much fun to drive (fast), and in the summertime with the AC on, it can suck up a lot of fuel, even on the highway. I have experienced few mechanical problems (my ignition key stopped working once), and I have driven this car about as hard as I know how.

Since buying my Focus new off the dealer's lot, I've had to endure five recalls, a cracked windshield, both back windows breaking, a wiring problem which caused the windshield wipers not to work (the windshield broke again during their attempt to fix that), a defect in the engine, a crack in the A/C line, and a defective passenger- side speaker that still only works 40% of the time after numerous repair attempts. While the design is great, the building materials and workmanship are sub-par (my back windows broke because the bracket which holds the windows in place is made out of cheap plastic which breaks if you must go over speed bumps daily).

I have driven 60k miles in the past 3 years and have experienced no problems with my focus other than having the brake pads replaced at 50k miles. I have driven a great deal on every terrain imaginable from ice and snow to sand, mud, gravel and pavement in my quest for adventure, and the focus has been a real trooper. Actually, my last car was a Trooper, and had nothing over the focus except a penchant for gas and oil. The wagon bed is big enough for sleeping, too. My only complaint is that fuel economy is surprisingly low for such a small vehicle (avg. 26 mpg in the past 3 years, 50/50 hwy and city)

We bought the Kona edition pretty much when the Focus first came out in 2000. We've been very pleased with the performance and reliability of the Focus. Yes, there have been a lot of recalls, but they were minor items that were done quickly at no cost. The car is very quick and nimble and very fun to drive. We've averaged about 22 miles per gallon, which is a bit disappointing for 125 horsepower, but it's not too bad. The Focus is an excellent value for the money.

I have around 117,000 on my 2000 LX. I have been getting lately about 31 around town and 38 on the highway for tanks averaging around 35. It doesn't use any oil and the front end is still solid as granite. I haven't had any problems with the car except for replacing the fuel pump and the alternator. The AM radio gets a bit of noise from the ignition system, which Ford never could fix. I will eventually put a filter in the link to see if that works. Otherwise, the Focus seems to have been a good investment. Based on the experience I have had so far, I expect the Focus to last well over 200,000 miles.

For the amount of money you could spend on transportation of your choice, the Ford ZTS is just about everything you could want in a small family car. It is very economical (28-33 m.p.g.),very attractive in and out, well laid out interior and instruments. My only "beef" is that it is still under powered, especially with th A/C on. A great car with a few problems, most recalls fixed things that I had replaced already. Fantastic summer & rain handling but buy top grade snow tires for winter. Fuel pump needed to be replaced because of a design flaw that Ford fixed in replacement. Still have original brakes with no troubles. Be careful slamming back tailgate, you may dent the door like I did. Avg. 28 MPG with highspeed (79 MPH) driving and hauling more stuff than I should.

Ford built a fun little car. Only problem after 36,000 miles is the annoying transmission squeal driving at speeds between 63 and 69 miles per hour. Dealer says this is a design flaw and completely unfixable. Which leaves me driving either over or under the speed limit on my daily freeway commute to work. This squeal could be a contributing factor in road rage.

This is the worst car I've ever owned from a quality standpoint. 8 recalls. Had the a/c compressor replaced, three weeks later the evaporator coil had to be replaced. The transmission leaked and had to take it back 3 times to get it fixed by the world's sorriest excuse for a service department. Realized several months after the a/c evaporator was replaced the heat didn't blow out of the floor vents anymore- dealer didn't hook back up correctly and then didn't want to take responsibility. Front drive hubs replaced at 38,000 mi.

Engine is peppy when it is needed and the car reinforces that feeling with a good sound. It could use some more pep, but Ford fixed that with the 2003/4 PZEV engine. I am truely extatic with this car (purchased used last July for $10.5k). Go to a Ford dealership, test drive the car and take it on a hilly and curvy road and you too will understand why this car is so much fun to drive!

If you are in for the long-haul, dont waste your money. It is ridiculous how often Ive had to put my Focus in the shop. Ive had about 9 recalls so far, and a lot of other repairs including a transmission leak twice, faulty rear seat, and a blocked ignition, to name a few. I love the size of the car, and the functionality of the hatchback, but that is not enough to make a consumer happy. A car needs to be reliable. This one is not. I cant wait to get rid of it.

I purchased the car in 2000 april.I first was impressed by the inside room, me being a big guy. It was also quick and handled nicely. Even through the recalls and minor problems, I was very happy with this car, until I started having rotor and brake trouble. The first failure was at 18000 miles and again (now) at 26000 miles. I have to admit I have been looking for a little bigger auto, But not a ford.

I was very proud of my Focus when I first bought it! It was just an adorable car to me...until it started behaving in true Ford fashion! At 33,000 miles, my rear axle actually broke. My tire could've come off and I could've been killed! And now my A/C condenser and one of my window regulators are broken..not to mention my radio randomly just shuts off from time to time. Also, my key gets stuck in the ignition or just won't turn to crank up the car! The car needs to be trashed and I'm trading it in as soon as I can.

3 years and 5 (or is it 6) recalls later I can only say I wish I had gone with my first instinct and bought a Toyota or a Honda. I guess I just didn't believe that a "World Class Car" could really be so poorly executed by Ford Motor Company. My 36 month warranty ended in February of 2003 and I'm looking at new front brakes (under 12K miles), repair of an engine oil leak and window molding that is falling off. My neighbor laughs and says it is traditional Detroit engineering - good enough to last through the warranty but no more.

Except for a couple of recalls, I have not had any noticeable problems. I think this car is very underrated when compared to what it provides for the money.

When I buy a new car, I expect reliabilty and I haven't had that in the 3 years I had it. It's spent a significant portion of it's life in the shop for either Ford recalls or engine problems of it's own. At 20K miles, a new transmission was needed. I contacted a lemon law attorney, but never had the time to pursue my case. I will never buy American again.

Just had the Focus in for it's 5th or 6th recall. As usual, the mechanics found a lot broken and were almost too embarrassed to talk to me. The brakes are shot...again and the tires are worn out again too. The front end shimmy Ford "fixed" is back too. The new problems are leaking transmission coolant lines and the passenger floor gets submerged under at least an inch of water when it rains. All Ford has ever done is blow me off so now it's my turn. Ford can kiss my butt goodbye forever! I'm trading this junker in for a Mazda.

I bought a 2000 Focus Wagon SE in January 2001. Since then we've only done about 14k in it but it has been to the dealership about a dozen times. Things break and fall off, and we've had nasty vibration from the wheels, most noticeably during braking, ever since they rotated the tires, despite re-rerotating and re-balancing somewhere else at my own cost. Now I just got another recall notice. Very disappointed, won't be buying a ford again. Only reason I haven't got rid of it is the resale value is way less than what I owe.

Of all the cars I could lease for 233 a month and 1500 down, the Focus was the best. The standard lease offered 2,500 more miles a year than volkswagen. Also my insurance company informed me that Ford doesn't require the expensive lease coverage that other company's do. The car is very comfortable and roomier than cars that cost much more. I have had one quality issue and that was the fuel pump, however that gave me plenty of warning and was covered under the warranty, also Ford rented me another car while mine was being repaired. The only disappointment in the car is gas mileage. Which I feel should be at least 10 miles per gallon higher.

I never have been a big fan of any small car, but I was very impressed with the ride & handling of the Focus. My LX sedan was the hands down winner after I drove the Honda Civic, Dodge Neon & Toyota Corolla. My Focus is doing an excellent job doing what I 'hired' it to do. I recommend the Focus to anyone shopping for an economical car.

In 3 short yrs. we've put 76,000+ miles on it. Our round trip commute to Houston, TX is 70 miles. We've had no problems. We had one accident but the Ford Dealership and Our insurance (Allstate)handled everything, giving a lifetime warranty on all work done. We pick up the car and within 2 days the check engine light came on again. Then they told us the values on cylinder 2 need to be replaced. Brakes could not always depress the pedal 100% but this had no affect the stopping action -Driver's headrest would not stay in place but would constantly "ride up"

Damn, I hate to love this car. It has screwed me many times. I'm sure everyone is aware of the recalls. This car stranded me 1500 miles from home with a rear wheel that almost fell off (15K miles). Two days to fix and ford wouldn't pay for hotel. I can't imagine what would have happened it the wheel had fallen off at 75 MPH. Key became stuck in the ignition (25K miles). The driver said it was the 3rd focus he had towed that DAY! My drivers seat has broken and now pokes my rear unless I use a towel. Ford said this was not covered under warranty. Why do I still like this car? It was cheap and fun to drive. It looks much nicer than a $14K car.

This car has a lot of interior space for a compact car, and leg and head room are a feat of engineering genius. I have no complaints about the simple, ergonomic and functional accessories. Fantastic handling and manouverability, a tough little exterior, and great fuel economy. Problem is $500 rotors that can't be turned and need replacing every 10k miles. The brakes never make a sound so you can't tell when the pads are worn. Why build an economy car with BMW rotors? Remember when Ford used MacPherson Struts on the 1980 Ford Fairmont? The logic of this escapes me. Also if you have a chance, look at the FordFocusBrakeProblems.com site.

I bought this car with 13,000 miles on it. At first it seemed to be just what I was looking for. Then 6 months later, I had an accident going 25 miles an hour (I couldn't stop the car in time), the air bags deployed and destroyed the dash area of my car. It cost my insurance company $3000 to fix everything. Right after that, I had to have my brakes changed as they were completely gone. MMM..wonder if that's why I couldn't stop the car during the accident?? My ignition switch went out this year and now my starter also had to be replaced. I also found out about a recall on the rear bearings. What's next?? I just don't feel safe in this car anymore.

I got my car in June 2000 when it had only 11 miles. I’ve had good mileage since day one, and it has remained around 31 to 32 mpg. Besides about 5 recalls it got and a couple of fixes under warranty, it has been virtually maintenance free. Total operation cost in 2.5 years is $10620 with 43000 miles. Cost per mile is just less than 25 cents! If you want to know how I get those number, check out Town Hall under Ford Focus ZX3 #2367.

I bought this car after a deployment to Germany, where I got the chance to drive a Focus on the Autobahn. German model had a Turbo-diesel and four wheel disks, which aren't available here but made the highspeed rocket ride more controlable and economic-topped out at 220 km/Hr, approx 140 MPH. Great car! Mine makes noises when going over dips and bumps in the road. There is also a "clicking" noise that comes from the gear box while idling in neutral. Ford build quality leaves much to be desired, and even though I like the Focus I won't get another one. It's still a fun car, fair to good all around. Good stereo, but alas not the best of the Xplode line either.

I've put nearly 10K miles on it (total nearly 40K). I have all the previous records, and its only repair was a fuel pump (common issue I hear). Thats it! I cannot find any probems. It handles well, and has a very smooth quiet ride. The engine is powerful enough to make it fun to drive. I love having ABS and side airbags - it was hard finding a 5-spd ZX3 with those options, as well as all the power equipment.

I put about 40k miles per year on my cars, and this one has not held up. It has gone through brakes every 30k miles, the suspension eats through tires, the windows have stopped working on 2 occasions, the fuel gage has never been accurate despite 3 repairs, several interior panels are loose, the drivers side mirror is loose... I have already spent twice as much in repairs on this car than I have on my 96 civic hatchback, which has almost 200k miles now and has again become my daily driver due to the poor build quality of this car.

In and out of the dealer that's where my car has spent more time rather than on the road. For the past 2 years I have run into problem after problem. Breaks making noises, gas pedal getting stuck, you name it! My car has had repairs for it. I will never even think of purchasing a Ford again!

I think that this car is very nice. It looks nice and does drive very nice. They sound system included is premium for the cars price, especially for a Ford. The only problem I have had is that it sometimes stalls(in an automatic!!) I have taken it to the dealership multiple times, but they find no problem. Overall, besides the recalls, it is fun to drive and an all around good car.

I paid dirt for this car new over 2 years ago. I have had absolutely no problems with the car in 44,000 relatively hard miles beyond the recalls, which you kind of have to expect from a first year car. Easily one of the best investments I have ever made.

The CD player has been replaced twice and in fact is in the shop now. The air conditioning leaked into my car and caused it to mildew under the carpets. There was a strange smell coming from the air conditioner and for a while black soot like stuff came shooting out of the vents. For a while now it has not been accelerating properly. It feels like it's dragging. The brakes went bad at 35k and the fuel pump had to be replaced at 37k . After they replaced the fuel pump, I started having strange electrical problems. When I turn the air conditioning up or the lights on something else will turn off.

I have had nothing but trouble with the Focus and the various Ford dealerships I have encountered when getting repairs. From the tons of recalls to the car's susceptibility to be knocked out of alignment, this car is a pain. On the up side, it looks good and recently I was rear-ended and the bumper was not all smashed up. Other than that, this car is not worth the money, and I paid 15,000 for it. WELL over what it was ever worth!

I was called in for every possible recall except the most irritating one, brakes. At 20,000 the pads had to be replaced. At 41,000 the pads, calipers, and rotors went. The following day I bought a Honda Civic LS. I will not own a Ford again because they did not stand behind their product.

This has to be the biggest piece of JUNK ever! After owning it for 2 years (and only 15,000 miles) I will NEVER own a Ford again! And Ford DOES NOT care if you are unhappy with their products! To numerous recalls to mention, they had to replace the auto transmission at 10,000 miles (and after numerous trips to the dealer!). This care is NOT SAFE, the car got T- Boned on the passenger side doors and the side-impact air bags (which I paid extra for) DO NOT DEPLOY! After complaining to Ford Corp, they basically call me a liar and refused to honor a prior agreement of fixing the problem! STAY AWAY FROM ANY FORD PRODUCT!

leasing our 2000 ford focus since may of 2000 has 27000 miles on it and has been in the shop more than I can say. We live in the northeast and every time it rains I find 6" of water on passager side floor have had rug replaced 5 times. Not to mention the numerous recalls. WE decided to change the o in FOCUS to another u BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT FORD DID WHEN THEN MADE THIS PIECE OF CRAP.

I've had my ZX3 for 2 years now and have had no problems at all. I just replaced the Good Year tires at 25,000 miles with a set of Michelin GXT's and it drives better than it did new. The only noises I had were with the Good Year tires. Even tho this car doesn't have as much hp as the new Civic SI, it blows the Civic away with quality, style and a lot more comfortable!!

Wife loved the look and the comfort compared to other smaller sedans. Good sound system. However, it has been recalled 7 or 8 times now and we have found the gas mileage to be subpar. We had a problem with car vibration above 70 mph - turned out dealership put on an unbalanced tire during recall service. Had it replaced at local tire shop. Still is loud on highway.

At 24 months and 12000 miles the transmission came apart inside, Ford kept it 3 weeks. Four months later, same thing, dealer kept it for 3 weeks. Interior trim has come loose, one seat belt would no longer latch, another seat belt could no longer be pulled out. Dealer repairs are iffy at best, replaced ALL the seatbelts with the WRONG COLOR (black belts, grey interior? BARF!) The recalls did not bother me, its a new design, but the multitude of other problems anger us both. With only 7 months left on the factory warantee, we are thinking of getting rid of this car.

Great performance, trend-setting styling for low price are the selling points on this one. It blows away the Civic, Corolla, Echo, Sentra, Protege, or anything else in its class. We've personally had no reliability problems for 45,000 miles other than some squeaky brakes that Ford replaced for free and a few recalls. Others have had mixed experiences, but I can't say there's anything about this car that has disappointed me.

The Ford Focus gets nothing but rave reviews through website articles. However, anyone that owns a 2000 Ford Focus will tell you otherwise. My car has been serviced for 47 different things. That's it 47. For example, my radio has been replaced twice in the past two years. Now it is malfunctioning again and Ford told me that they would no longer pay for service on the vehicle because I have 36,250 miles on it and the warranty is up at 36,000. I regret to have an automatic transmission on that car, it is much more fun and fast with a stick. Go with 16’’ wheels, it helps a lot the handling and maybe with 205/40/16 tires instead of 50's for a better stability when driving aggressively. I cannot wait that my Firestone Firehawk stock tires wear out, they are terrible.

I loved this car at first. THEN into the dealership it went. Again and again for repairs. First the break pads AND rotors had to be replaced at only 25k miles! All normal they said. Break dust on the wheels is horrible and now at 37k miles my breaks are squealing and grinding. Outside parts are loose, falling off. I have an oil leak. The ignition switch broke and had to be towed and was in the shop for a week. Seat belt in the back is jammed. Gas guage does not always work. Not to mention the recalls. The most recent problem was the fuel pump was replaced. The rear bearings/moldings/seat latch/front stabalizer bushings twice...Now from researching the Internet it seems as if the brakes are an issue. After typing this I am going out to take the wheels off! I am told in secret by a dealership source that the Focus is a major problem. It has 62,000 miles on it, and has never needed additional maintenance other than the recall items that were replaced. I'm am not certain how long this car will last, but remember that it's Ford's entry level vehicle, and if you get 150,000 out of it, it's done it's job. I've put 58,000 miles on my zx-3 in a year and half. These miles are combined freeway, mountain, and L.A stop & go. this thing has been perfect. Nothing to do but change the oil, I'm still on my original set of brake pads. As a long time Benz owner(5), I bought this as a disposable car, I had no expectations of a E55 or similar. Ford has done their homework on this one, this thing is a blast to drive, especially on empty curvy roads. I'm probably going to give this to my teen-age daughter and get me the SVT. Even with the dealer's gouging, I'm thousands ahead of the small Benz coupe, and it will be alot more fun to drive.

I have had this car for about a year now and I have no complaints. I bought it with about 39000 miles with the zetec engine. The only problem I've had is a couple of brake cleanings and regular maintenace. (Oil changes, Tune up) The engine is quite once warmed up. Exterior is nothing to brag about, but there are some aftermarket parts than can be purchased to make it look better. Also interior seems a little cheap. We have been really happy with our ford focus for the year and a half since we had it, and the the front brake went out. PADS & ROTORS! This car has ~30,000 miles on it, mostly highway driving. A quick check on the internet searching for the words "ford" "focus" "brakes" have revealed that front brake failure is COMMON on this vehicle. Many people have had to have their brakes and rotors replaced after only 8,000 miles! Ford is denying any responsiblity for the design, or that there is any problem. Well NO MORE FORDS FOR ME!!! Rear axle assembly has been done, both front stablizer links replaced, brake calipers froze, car shook at high speeds. Springs were not properly in control arms, caused clunk. Clutch spring done twice. Car stalls occasionally, still not fixed. Car RPM's fluctuate when stopped causing car to shake at stops. Two wheel covers replaced, wiper arms had to be tightened. This car is awesome. I bought it in 2000 and I have had my Focus ZTS since than and have no plans on getting a new car anytime soon. It is a great car... and is fun to drive. This car is worth every penny of the 17000 I paid for it. It is reliable and can't be beat.

The car is great... i love the way it looks drives and handles. The fold down rear seats provide oodles of storage space when you need it... However, i too have been to the ford dealership a little to often for my tastes. Everything has been covered by the warranty but i bought a new car so i wouldn't have to worry about the problems. However, i know my service guy really well now.

Worst car ever!

I bought this car believing the hype from both Consumer Reports and everywhere else. I have now owned my Focus for 2 years, and I have had it in the shop 12 times. Yup, 12 times. 6 recalls and 6 broken parts that were under warranty. I have never been more disappointed in any product in my entire life. Truly, Ford has continued along the tradition of the Pinto, where they calculate how much it will cost to replace broken stuff as being lower then how much it will cost to put in higher quality parts. It's a textbook cost-benefit analysis, and Ford wrote the textbook. Don't buy a Ford.

I have bought 16 cars and this is by far the most car for the money. It has never been to the shop, handles great and looks good. A little more low end torque and it would be perfect. That didn't stop my wife and I from buying her one too.

I bought my car thinking what a good deal. But quickly that turned upside down. The cluch had a recall, after they fixed that (ha) I put It back in the shop three more times. Now I'm told the sound is normal. Don't think so. I've had it in two times for a clunking noise in the back left side, they fixed it once but the noise came right back, I guess in stuck with that noise to. The back light went out, the gas light stuck on, they are fixed but for how long I don't know. I didn't buy the extended warranty, OH NO! I've read the other reviews and I'm scared. Now there is a noise in the front when I go over bumps!

This car is fun to drive, looks good, and has great interior room for a compact. Gas mileage is OK but not great (about 25 - 26 mpg on mixed hilly curvy roads and in-town driving). The quality of the workmanship leaves much to be desired. There have been numerous recalls. In addition, I've had a variety of things repaired under the warranty (door panel trim, headlights, gas gauge, squeaks, accelerator cable mounting, brakes, and loose trim).

I bought this car with 23k on it and now have 34k. In the 6 months I've owned it it has been in the shop 3 times for the following problems:1)Water leak in firewall under dash caused carpet to mold. 2)Transmission leak. 3)Broken rear window defrost.4)Stereo display/preset button lights went out.5)Fuel gauge died..twice! This car has great curb appeal but lousy reliability. Buyer Beware!

I purchased the 2000 Focus SE Wagon used Jan, 2002 with 4525 miles and had it 2 months. The car was in the shop more than I can enjoy it. Besides the recalls I had the headlamps replaced, Rear license plate bulb and gasket,Fuel gague didn't work: replaced the fuel pump and sending unit to get the gague to work, Power steering pump leaked, serptine belt made noise, transmission leaked, windshield washer fluid leaked out the top when driving around: (check Yours),the dealer replaced the reserviour and the cap. The dealer told me that it was overfilled. DUH! This will be my first and last Ford. Found On Road Dead, Fix Or Repair Daily, Driver Returns On Foot (Ford Reversed)

NOTHING BUT RECALLS AND ON SOME PARTS, THE SAME RECALL THREE TIMES. DEALERSHIP LEASE MANAGER TOTALLY UNREASONABLE. THE VEHICLE WAS LOOKED AT BY TWO INDEPENDANT MECHANICS THAT SAID THE CAR WAS UNSAFE.AND! THAT IT WAS A LEMON. I PAID TO GET OUT OF A LEASED VEHICLE THAT WAS A MISTAKE FROM ITS FIRST DAY ON THE CONVEYOR.SEVERAL THOUSAND DOLLARS LATER I LEARNED A HARD LESSON. :(

I am very happy with my purchase, Ive only had this one for a couple of days but I did rent one for a week in Atlanta last year and loved it. It has plenty of room for the kids and dogs at a very affordable price, very comfortable. So far everything seems to be just fine in it, Im sure time will tell but I did purchase a hefty warranty as always......

I bought the Focus for my daughter and drove it 850 miles to deliver it to her. Although I usually drive very large cars, it was very comfortable for a small car. Like all new models there were several recalls, but the car has done very well in the past 2 years. It's had none of the problems that I've read about in the other reviews, except for a brake problem that was fixed under warranty. It's been a very good car.

Overall a fun little car. I've had very few problems with it so far. My best friend has had one for over a year and she loves it. She's had NO problems with it. I find it very comfortable. The only time it was slightly uncomforatable was when we squeezed five people into it. Four fits just fine. Fuel economy is not very good at all. I was a little disappointed by that.

Well, my Focus ZTS is a very good car performance wise; it has great power and acceleration. Also on the ZTS model, the seats and steering wheel are adjustable so I can customize to my liking. My complaints with it are several: 1. All those darn recalls. 2. The cheapo organic brake pads installed with the front disk brakes. 3. My transmission leaked a little 4. Squeaky OEM windshield wipers
