I bought this Explorer in 2008 with 88,000 miles on the 4.0 motor. I bought it from a friend so I know the service was regularly done. I had a full 90,000 mile service to include replacing the coolant, transfer boxes and transmission oil/filter, brake pads, etc. Cost over $1,200 but it was obviously well worth it. I now have 188,000 miles and other than oil changes/tire rotations I have replaced the battery and a fuel pump. That's it. The motor burns no oil, the AC works great, the 4WD and all the electronics still work great. The gas consumption leaves something to be desired but as this is my surf fishing and Lab riding vehicle I plan on keeping it a good while. I originally bought it because of the good price on it and to hold me over until I could afford a newer 4 Runner, of which I've had two. It has been such a good value I'm going to see just how far it will go. I'm personally very pleased with this vehicle.

Shockingly Good

I purchased this vehicle while hoping to find a good used 4Runner of the same vintage, but this one-owner SUV appeared with 166,000mi with a nearly new remanufactured engine (owner felt a new engine was better value than replacing both head gaskets, one of which was leaking) that looked exceptionally good, outside (not even a door ding) and with an interior that looked amazing, showing no real wear at all. A comparable 4Runner of the same mileage and year would have cost at least $2000 more than the $3300 I paid for this V8 AWD Limited that cost $41,000+ new (I have the window sticker). If I am careful I can get 18 city and 24 highway (Interstate) which I consider nothing short of outstanding for a V8 SUV. A former 6cyl Cherokee I once had only managed 16 city and 20 highway. The AWD with limited slip rear differential model does not have a 4WD Low transfer case, so I expected nothing off-road, but I easily followed a friend w/ a 4X4 4Runner through Arizona backcountry that looked impossible for an AWD, but the Explorer easily went up no drama and with zero wheel spin on any tire, whereas the 4Runner was skipping and intermittently slipping one tire or another. Even w/out a low range, it climbed with little throttle, and the temp gauge never moved. I don't plan going on expeditions with the vehicle, but I was amazed at how it did in conditions I thought it would fail at. Overall, given its high chassis mileage especially, it's tight and rattle-free and has been extremely reliable (I have the service records since new), and except for the head gasket problem, only the front shocks and upper ball joints were replaced (except for normal wear items like brake pads, wiper blades, etc.).

I bought this vehicle used and currently have 130,000 miles on it. It needs a little front end work right now, but nothing that isn't expected at the 130,000 mile mark. The Explorer handles great in winter weather and also does surprisingly well off road for an AWD vehicle. I am an offroad hobbyist and use this to tow both a Jeep and a camper at various times. There is plenty of room for me, my wife and our three kids. I am most impressed with the ride quality while towing. It tows my 3000 lb camper like there is nothing there. We do have a class III towing hitch which helps. The 5.0 motor is awesome! Love that engine. Overall I love this vehicle and have been very impressed with its durability and reliability. Take care of it and it will take care of you. Every vehicle requires maintenance with aging. Just do the maintenance and you will drive an Explorer for a long time.

We are original owners of this car being our 2nd Eddie Bauer Ford EXPLORER 4X4 . Wife uses it as a commuter vehicle, I get it when anything is wrong with it....lol. We have 326k miles on the car. She commutes 30 miles daily 4 miles city 26 miles highway daily with vehicle. We got 350k miles out of the previous generation car before someone hit it and totaled it. You can get good mileage out of these cars if you dutifully maintain them. Husband has Ford Explorer Sport Trac for work around the farm and grounds. We also own VOLVO sedan Maintain these vehicles and they will last as long as we have had them. find a good mechanic after you have finished your first 100k with dealer service. Update February 2017 Mileage now 343K and still going...

I recently purchased a 2000 Eddie Bauer Edition to replace a 1998 XLT AWD model that I gave to my parents in their mid 60's. First let me say that unless you buy the 5.0 version, all bets are off with the engine. The ford 4.0 was marginal at best. The 5.0 saw duty in the Mustang, Crown Vic, Thunderbird, and host of other cars. The engine will last well over 250,000 miles if you just change the oil every 3000 miles. I am the 3rd owner of this vehicle and it rides almost brand new. It has 125,000 miles and the paint and leather are a solid 8 out of 10. The back up alarm, heated seats, 6 disc cd, and all the steering wheel controls work flawlessly.

I bought my Eddie bauer in 2011 with 210 000kms on it for $2500, its mostly for my wife to haul around the kids BUT ive used it several times to haul my mustang on a double axle 18ft car trailer, i have even pulled a full sized jeep grand cherokee, and it pulled it very nicely. The fellow i bought it off of had clearly neglected a lot of maintenance for a while, but after i spent some weekends with it in the garage, it runs and drives amazing. Great on long trips, great for pulling with (i have pulled over 6000lbs of trailer weight), and great in the snow or a little off-road fun. very reliable, and great bang for the buck. average 18mpg mixed, have gotten up to 24mph on the highway at best.

I am sure that any positive review is from a Ford dealer or someone who has an interest in selling one. Because this car is probably the biggest pile of junk ever built. The biggest problem is that the dealer cant even fix them. I am on my third transmission. If you look online you will see that they all have the same known problem. I get a random check engine light that comes back as "bad shift solenoids". Dealer changer shift solenoids . and it was not the problem. Shifting problem misteriously went away for 1 yr and is now back. In true FORD fashion nerf bars rusted and literally fell off of the car, EGR rusted through and caused all kinds of problems, bad mass airflow sensor, etc

Overall this has been a great car. We've had our explorer for almost 10 years, and we bought it used. It's going on 230,000 Miles now, with the original engine still running strong. We've only had to get the transmission changed once, and other than that it has been nothing but your regular maintenance. This is a great car for Michigan winters when you're driving through a half foot of snow and ice in the mornings, and has an amazing a/c for the summer. The tinted windows are nice as well, and there's a lot of room in it compared to other cars the same size as it. This is definatley no the car for you if you are worried about your gas milage though, i average around 17-18 mpg

I purchased this vehicle used, after my Toyota Land Cruiser was totaled. I wanted another SUV/Truck that I could use as a work horse. I had no faith in the vehicle at all, none what so ever. I drove it hard and still do, I didn't wash it, wasn't thinking about its maintenance, and the thing continued to, if I must say, (EXPLORE). No issues with any type of upkeep or problems of service lights, strange noises, anything falling apart, which was my fore thought of Fords all my life. Needless to say it just hit 140k and purrs like a kitten. The engine is super strong, which is one reason my title of the review states shocking, and still going strong. I'm now a believer in Ford. A GT40 is next.

I bought this truck as the 2nd owner with 130K miles on it. The 5.0L V8 engine is a huge plus and the transmission shifts smoothly still. I still do notice the common problems in it like the radio display on the Mach stereo system going out and the rear wiper only working about 50% of the time, but they're only minor problems. The leather seats have really held out well over the years and is built to last! The premium Mach stereo system is definitely a plus with the nice bass it booms out :] Probably going to run this truck until it dies. This truck is definitely a great example of Ford's amazing quality and superiority. Would recommend this vehicle to anyone.

Bought mine in June of 2008 with 84,000 miles on it. I'm the second owner and take extremely good care of it. Maintenance is always done religiously on time. It now has 145,000 miles on it and the only thing it needed was the oxygen sensors replaced. NEVER has broke down on me. Only issue I have is the rear wiper motor is stripped out where the arm is inserted into it and the rear window hinges have stripped out at the screws. I have taken it off-road twice, once in sand, and once up and down some decently rocky short hills and it climbed like a champ...still no mechanical issues! I'll buy another one if gas economy is better. It's an XLT V8 AWD. Prefer to choose 2 WD or 4 WD

We purchased a used 2000 XLT in December of 2010 with 111,000 miles. It wasn't what we were "looking" for but it turned out to be a GREAT buy! Immediately after purchasing we had to replace engine gaskets at $500 through a Ford Dealership here in Phoenix and that was the only problem we had. at 124,xxx miles I had a rear tire blowout on the freeway at 65-70 mph. Hit both barricades on each side of the freeway. The truck was totaled but I literally walked out of the truck with only a broken arm and sprained foot after kicking the door open. This SUV is about as safe as they come and mechanical failures are minimal if you perform the scheduled preventative maintenance.

I drove my 2000 Explorer from 140,000 to 201,000 km. It was so reliable. Always started, never got stuck and never in the shop (except for routine maintenance--oil changes, brakes etc). Before I replaced it, it began leaking a bit of oil and the fuel sensor gauge began malfunctioning, but it still drove like a dream. It was an awesome car with lots of utility--it could carry whatever you needed, through whatever conditioned you faced (I live in Canada). This car provided me with excellent value and should be very reliable if you take care of it.

My dream car has always been a red Ford Explorer! I am so happy with my car! My car came from Boston, I live in Detroit. Drove it all the way back from the dealer last summer without a single problem! My Explorer is an V8 XLT 5.0L 4 Door with over 180, 000 miles and still going strong! I would recommend this car to everyone (minus the gas, but oh well)! I've only had to get the exhaust manifold done. I've never had any major problem with this truck! Very dependable, I never worry about breaking down. I drive from Kalamazoo to Detroit all the time when I get time from school and I feel very safe driving all that way constantly! Being at 181,127, I fully plan on taking it to 250,000 or more.

What a joke. 4x4 goes out. Trannys go out. Front end went. Rear end went out. Abs went out. Crank was going. They are built to fall apart and cost you a ton of money and why is everyone wanting shift on the fly four wheel drive? Put that on the floor. Maybe that's why Dodge can beat Ford with the durango.

Made me a believer in Fords. I really love this little truck. I have the 2 door model, and even after the surprise of a baby, the roominess has served me well. Great car for around town, could do with better gas mileage, but on the highway it does OK. Really the most reliable car I have ever owned. Would recommend to anyone.

I'm able to travel in snow well without any problems, maybe with ice but who doesn't?! The 4WD is AWESOME! I would love to get the newer Explorer, why wouldn't I love it? The only thing I hate is the minor problems with it...the rear window wiper blade doesn't wipe-it wipes maybe 3 inches of what it should, the gas of course, and just minor things, which have been worked out. It's built to be awesome and have that "I'm a bad ass" feel to it. I wouldn't trade it in for anything less- even though gas prices are tempting me :[

I bought my 2000 Explorer Limited just before the intro of the 2001. I average 18.4 in town and 20 highway and have 135,000 miles on it. I went thru the tire recall and a couple other minor recalls, but have throughly enjoyed this SUV. It's been garage kept and looks nearly as good today as the day a bought it. I really take care of my SUV as it is my second most expensive investment after my house. I'm not happy that the value has dropped so badly, but that's American for you. I'll drive this thing until either it or I dies. If I had my time to do over, I probably would have gotten the AWD.

I bought this car 2 months ago, and have had nothing but problems. The next morning after i bought it, somehow there was a hole in the exhaust and i needed a completely new one. Dealer replaced it after much arguing, and now my check engine and check suspension light are on, I believe i need a new mass air flow sensor and a ball joint. On top of this, my ABS sensor failed, and it doesn't work. Apparently this truck passed safety, but it definitely shouldn't have.

Purchased in 2005 as a second vehicle with 78,000 miles. Had several Thunderbirds in the past with no problems. This vehicle has done better than expected. Other than tires, brakes and a battery, I had no maintenance issues until I hit 128000. then I needed to replace the brake master cylinder and developed a leak in the radiator. V8 is responsive and I can get 20 on the highway if I keep it at 70 mph. Just sold it to my brother and I bought an 03 Explorer XLT with 60k miles. Hope it does as well. When reading other reviews, it seems people have no problems or the car is a nightmare.

I got this car in college and used it to drive back and forth to ski races around the northeast. It handled amazingly well on snow, plowed effortlessly through deep snow, and also performed well on the highway. My only gripe at all is the low gas mileage, but that's due to the V8 engine. My main feedback about this vehicle is related to safety. I recently totaled this vehicle in a crash. I skid out of control on a gravel road (went around a curve too fast), launched off an embankment and rolled 7 times. My friend and I walked away with little more than bruises. Anyone who has ever seen photos of the crash is amazed--this vehicle held up like a tank!

Ready for the list: Valve body in transmission, engine rods, oxygen sensors(2), transfer case, front differential seal, driver's side ball joints 3 times, tie-rods twice, passenger side ball joints once, center console collapsed, rear window leak! 5k in repairs! All this by 75,000 miles! Too bad I enjoyed it when it ran.

Started with 4 thousand miles with a noise like a dry speedometer cable that took multiple trips to resolve. During year 4 with around 65K miles I had Transmission issues, intake gasket sucking air, plastic arm rest, and the top problem was replacing front drive bearings, rear axle bearings, front drive all in a failed attempt to get rid of a noise so load even the transmission mechanic thought I should be more worried about it. So for the past 50 thousand miles I have be waiting to see wait is going to fail off so I can repair it.

I love it!

I've put almost 19,000 miles on this SUV in less than 8 months and I have had no problems whatsoever. I had a 1997 Isuzu Rodeo before this so it was nice to trade-up to a car without a rusty spare tire holder and bumper. The Explorer is probably a shade worse on fuel but the Rodeo had a manual tranny. The Explorer has a much more solid feel, doesn't lean on turns, has a normal cupholder and overall feels more comfortable.

Bought my '00 Explorer brand new and have had nothing but exceptional service from it. 23 mpg hwy and 18.5 in town. Tune up and trans. flush at 90K miles. A/C still cold. Radio LED's burned out at 110K and that's a pain but radio still plays great. Liked this car so much I ordered an '07 as my company vehcile for the next 3 yrs. If you need a good used SUV this model is a great choice!

I bought this Explorer new. Pulled small box trailers and boats all over the South and Southwest. Never have had any trouble. Only did regular maintenance. It has been hard on tire, but all of my other SUVs were also. It comes with the territory in these vehicles. The back wiper has never worked right, but not a big problem. Stills runs great. Uses no oil. The model has taken a lot of bad publicity, but mine has just been excellent. I would buy another.

Purchased used from leasing company. Rolled over 183K problem free with regular, normal maintenance (oil changes every 4K, transmission flush every 35K). Replace brake rotors / pads about every 60K, but only because I feel safer doing so. Engine, transmission very quiet, smooth. Changed spark plugs at 90K and 175K, spark plug wires at 175K. Not sure how much more anyone could ask for.

This was my family's 4th Explorer and we're going to continue buying Explorers because they are great SUVs. Everything was great about it, I never had any problems. When the car was totalled it had over 150,000 miles on it and it was running strong. I got into a pretty bad accident in it and it held up really well and no one was injured. I feel like this is a really safe car and I really liked it a lot.

I loved my Explorer! I had no major problems until I hit 100,000 miles and then it fell apart. Had problems with the rear wiper, driver door locks, transmission, spark plugs, radio light, knocking sound in the engine and all of it happened in about three months. It's now in the shop and hope to trade for a newer model when it gets fixed.

I have enjoyed the Explorer - it has only failed me twice; once my fault and once the SUV. The radio runs too hot and you lose the lcds on the radio. Not expensive. Transmission needs to be service every 30000 miles. The ERG needs to be replaced too frequently. Rides great. I have only been stuck in snow once (about three feet of snow). Good pulling power. I will buy another one, but with 3rd seat for use sometimes, not daily.

Best vehicle I have ever owned. This is a $40,000 dollar truck out of the factory, and I picked it up for tiny fractions of that. My Explorer has more features than anyone could ever need, and the powertrain has been rock solid. Ford may not be on par with some of the imports, but I get twice the amenities for half the price. I recommend the 4.0 SOHC if you are not using the car for consistent towing. The 4.0 has 210 hp, and unfortunately the 5.0 only has 215, and you pay for it in poor mpg. At 70 mph, I consistently get 20+ mpg on the highway. Mach stereo is powerful and crystal clear. Never a single reliability issue.

Purchased mine new and it is still running with 165,000 miles on it. Drove it HARD everyday for nearly six years without doing much more than changing the oil (and didn't do that very often), i.e it has survived use and abuse. Only complaint is the fuel pump which started to give me trouble at about 125,000 miles and is the reason why I'm no longer driving it (but I am now driving a 2005 model if that gives any indication about the significance).

I bought mine used from a dealer. I got a great deal, and the vehicle has been solid, fun to drive, and it starts daily, and with better tires and new shocks, it handles pretty well . But it is an SUV not a sports car, so as with any high centered vehicle, driver responsibility is a must. Mine is a 5 speed, and easy to toss around, slide sideways, and fun in the mud and dirt. Keep the oil changed, rotate tires, and air filter every 3k miles, should be okay.

I sold my 1999 Miata (sigh) - needed more room, haul a trailer, etc. I purchased my Limited with 87,000 miles on the clock. After replacing the original shocks and doing a tune-up we loaded it up and headed on a 6,000 mile vacation. Once I got used to the very truckish handling (a shock after the "your thoughts are my command" demeanor of the Miata), I learned to love this vehicle. Now at 108,000 miles, I would rate this as (gasp!) one of the most trouble free and usable vehicles I've ever owned. It pulls down a very respectable 17 city/22 hwy fuel economy and handles any chore I throw at it. I also bought a 1998 with a V8. The SOHC V6 performed just as well with double the fuel economy.

My Explorer has had transmission work done on it 3 times in 3 years. It seems like as soon as the one year warranty runs out, so does the transmission. I also have to replace brakes at least twice a year and my check engine light won't go off even after I had the oxygen sensor worked on as instructed by the mechanic. This truck has given me nothing but problems from day one!

I bought this car as a demo with 2100 miles on it. It operated well for the first 4 years - recalls were handled promptly - but then the problems started. Normal wear (brakes, wipers, battery, etc.) to be expected (but not appreciated) but alternator failed, fuel pump went bad and other assorted "minor" problems (which aren't cheap to fix) before it hit 50,000 miles. Have always enjoyed driving the car - especially on long trips - very comfortable, easy to drive - wish gas mileage was a little better - but don't mind sacrificing that for the comfort. Not sure if I'll buy another one though.

I bought the Explorer over the Cherokee, even though the Cherokee had more options, at a lower price. My truck drives very well, and has incurred very few problems. The paint job of the vehicle is another issue. My black paint is cracking on the roof and hood of the car. I have always washed and waxed the car thoroughly, and wish this would not happen. The paint on the roof racks is also coming off.

Bought my Explorer with 32,000 miles. At 42,000 transmission blew. At 58,000 transmission blew again. At 72,000 needed ball joints upper and lower both sides, wheel bearing right side tie rods, rotors, brakes, shocks, and tires. I can go with the brakes, shocks and tires -- normal wear but the suspension, no way. At 86,000 head gasket blew and is in the garage again. When it comes out it will be traded, I will not buy another Ford. This vehicle sees all highway. no city. No off road. I really like the Escape but too scared to go through the expense again. 2 transmissions $3200, front end work $2000, now head gasket $1100, coupled with the price of the vehicle I could of bought a Lexus.

First complaint is the two doors and how you have to get out to let people in and out there's no way around it. Kinda stinks when it's raining you know? Then you gotta be a bit of a contortionist to get back there and out, and they don't give you much space for this. Crummy little windows in the back make you claustrophobic. Okay and THE GAS MILEAGE is horrendous. That car eats better than I do! The rusty side steps, it's just unacceptable and embarrassing. It's stuffy in there, no way around using the air vent and the A/C and heat are always either freezing or baking you alive. The roof rack paint is peeling. What else? The rusty drums that had to be replaced at 50k miles, the way it stalls in the cold.

I have taken this excuse of a SUV into the dealer 12 times under warranty (that's including 3 recalls)! Door ajar light has been "fixed" three times and still comes on to this day. All problems include transmission, rear window, rear window washer, tires, ball joint, knocking engine noise (dealer said this was normal!), starter, rusty step bar, etc. I will never buy another Ford, anything owned by Ford, or anything that looks like a Ford again! Please do yourself a favor and look at another company besides Ford.

We drive to several ski vacations every year and pulled a 21 foot boat for the first two years. Love the 4wd in the snow and getting the boat out of the water. Mechanical - two sets of brakes, a loose antenna wire and a stuck thermostat are it for maintenance.

Over all, it’s OK. The ride is choppy and rough and it averages 18mpg even with the best riding tires I can find. I would not recommend this vehicle for long cross country drives. The spark plug wires have been replaced every 30,000 miles due to heat damage. The brakes lasted 50,000 miles, the A/C lasted to 100,000 (4 YEARS). The engine drive seal failed and now leaks oil on to the manifold, leaving a wonderful smoke trail. The radio lights fade on and off at will and the front driver’s side door lock won’t unlock with the remote. Most of my driving is dry smooth Arizona highways with no rattling problems and a never used AWD and tow package.

We are at the end of our lease. This truck has been as advertised, both good and bad. It's been reliable, its AWD has gotten me through a couple of snowstorms, and has ample space for our family of 4 plus dog. We're moving up to a minivan mainly for the extra passenger capacity. Although I can't complain about the Explorer in any specific area, if I could go back 5 years, I would NOT buy this vehicle again. Again, there's nothing really wrong with it, but there are many other vehicles that would have fit our lifestyle better at a much lower price. I think a car based SUV like the Escape would have been a better choice.

Has more of the redesigned 2001 features. It's basically a 2001 without the newer body style. The only thing it doesn't have is the SOHC 4.0l engine, it has the OHV 4.0l engine. The OHV is not bad for acceleration from a standstill, but at highway speeds you barely move. If you buy this year make sure it has a SOHC engine because some do and some don't, and most dealerships will sell both engines at the same price and that's a difference of 160 hp and 210 hp. No MAJOR problems but a lot of nuisances. The rear wiper works intermittently; you have to get the slip yokes lubed ($50) or else it feels like the tranny drops. Not a bad SUV though...at least mine.

This is a highway car not and off road one and both the front and rear end are bad, both front hub assembly, ball joints, transmission slipping between 1st and 2nd, the V6 engine is noisy, the O2 sensors had to be replaced as well as the intake gaskets for sucking air. Interior - The seats have no lower back support and the rear seat belt latches in the back seat keep anyone but a small child from seating in the center. Arm rest broke. Exterior - trim bad from factory and shows spots where it is snapped on.

The heated seat on the drivers side went out at 36,000 miles. 6 way CD player was replaced under warranty. Ball joints replaced at 29,000 miles, was just out of warranty 3 weeks; dealership replaced them free. You expect something like this at 100,000 miles, not 29,000. stabilizer control links were just replaced at 42,000 miles. This is the 2nd Explorer I have owned. I am delighted that so far I have been able to put appliances, etc that I need to haul in the back of my Explorer Sport without any difficulty. The suspension is a little bumpy though, even on decent roads. When the weather is cold the back door sticks and I can't get it open. Cold weather really affects the Explorer, and not for the good. My engine sometimes sounds like a vacuum cleaner. I would not recommend 2 doors for a family of more than 2- difficult to get out of te back.

I definately will consider the Explorer with 3 rows when it comes time to purchase again. They could improve slightly on the driver's seat having a little more room. Also the rear wiper seems to be in a spot where it can be bent easily.

being German and just moved to the U.S., I bought the Explorer in 2000 to get the 'American' feeling of a SUV. Exploring the vehicle's behavior in the first year was interrupted by a 6 week break the service shop needed to replace the broken transmission. Riding the SUV felt like a 'bounce mobil', it is too stiff, the fuel economy is not the best and spped only in straight lanes, curves seem to destabilize the drinving behavior.

I bought this car used with 40,000 miles on it. I have had a number of things go wrong (spark plugs, wires, oxygen sensor, IAC valve, transmission acting up). As long as you are willing and able to keep up with the "not-so-routine" maintenance it's not a bad vehicle. But when it developes a new noise just about every week that requires investigation, it gets a little tiring.

The eager 239HP V8 is WONDERFUL and is a bit upgrade from the 215HP V8 from 2000, but it could use a little more power, about 20-30 more horses. It has great breaks and accelleration is top notch. The standard AM/FM/Cassette/CD sterio is pretty good for a standard sterio. Rear visibility is good and the large windows make it a good view all around. He hit my rear corner and it folded, the roof began to buckle from the force and i was plowed into a guard rail, I loved my truck but safety is FIRST, and i walked away with 1 bruise and whiplash, not to mention because i was stopped i didn't have my seatbelt on. I bought the truck with 36000 miles and I've had my explorer for 16 months now and I've had a/c and transmission issues. I had the compressor changed and a new pressure control valve changed in the transmission. Since then I've had no issues with my truck. I'm looking for an expedition because we just had another baby and the back seat just isn't roomy with a big car seat. Other than that the Explorer is fine.

I purchased this vehicle brand new and paid around 25000 dollars for it and I has been a nightmare. Not only did the dealership try to screw me out of the rebate the transmission has been replaced 3 times in 55000 miles and the thermostat has been replaced 4 times in 70000 miles. Ford has been absolutly useless in helping me. I tried to trade it in and of course they didnt want it either. I will never buy another ford I will buy foreign first.

I purchased this Explorer new for my wife. Front bumper was out of alignment when we took delivery. Got hit with the fuel injector recall, after 3 trips to dealership for the "clunk" under the drivers feet they found nothing and we went to another dealership...missing transmission mounting bolt! Just paid it off and 6K miles out of warranty the transmission slips between 2nd and 3rd...$900 bills later! That new Sequoia is going to look good in my garage...bye bye Ford

All unscheduled maintenance was covered under warranty and was nothing major. Engine-transmission match perfectly with shift points that maximize torque. Mileage ranged from 19 to 23 on highway and from 17 to 19 in town. Quick steering and smooth easy braking. Stiff ride at low speeds and rough roads.

It appears the 2000 Explorer was built to last around 60,000 miles. Our 2000 Eddie Bauer is now falling apart with barely 65,000 miles. Most recently, we discovered Ford put a $50 transmission in a $36,000 vehicle. The transmission is going out. Shocking, considering 90% of this vehicle's miles were on the highway in overdrive and has NEVER towed anything! From the repair shops, I'm hearing Ford put far too flimsy a unit in the V6 Explorers. Many do not last as long as mine.

I bought this vehicle in September of 2003, and for the most part, I have enjoyed driving it. The only major problem I have had has been the transmission, which needed about $2000 worth of work (only part of which was covered by my so-called Used Car warranty). Tip: Don't take it to a Ford dealer for service. A reputable place in your area is probably just as good, if not better and smarter. Lesson learned: Read the fine print of your warranty. Mine would not pay for "genuine Ford parts (gags)," only after-market parts, which the dealer would not do.

This has been a really great vechle. I have been able to go thru 3 foot snow drifts and sometimes I get 21-22 mpg. There are onely a couple of things I would change I would give it stronger seat belt retractors. and I would like to be able to turn dash lights off entirely. I have had to put new front brake pads on at 70,000. Other wise new windshield blades and a transmission hose leak are about my only expenses. There have been three recalls, but the dealer was able to take care of them in about two hours. I do wish I would have bought heated mirrows, but I plan on buying another one in a couple of years. This one will given to a family member.

My Explorer had a radiator replacement, tire replacements, and a recall in the first 1000 miles. It had two additional recall items in August, 2003. It went out of warranty (3 yr/36,000 miles) in July, 2003. In October, 2003 (37500 miles) the engine blew, though it had been meticulously maintained, costing $5200. Ford would not accept any responsibility or cover any repairs. No more Fords for me though I have driven them in my business and personal fleet.

I really like the looks of my Exp.Sport, but it is the worst vehicle I ever drove. You feel every bump in the road..and if those bumps are in a curve, the rear will get "squirelly". If you drive in the rain...slow way, way down because you lose traction (rear) on wet roads. I tried other tires with no success in changing this problem.

If you're going to by an Explorer, you may want to opt for the 4-door instead of the 2-door sport model. It doesn't take corners well at all and the suspension leaves a lot to be desired. It drives like a pickup truck. We've had ours for 4 years. The engine has been fine, with only a sensor going bad. Also, the brakes had to be replaced at only 21,000 miles.

I'm very satisfied with my Explorer. I bought it used about 8 months ago. Other than a back wiper blade that had to be bent a little to make it work right I have had no problems with it. It has good performance (I have the larger V6.) It's just a fun car to drive. Gas mileage is about 21 mpg hiway and about 13 city. It has the usual truck ride which is bumpier than a car. I'm looking forward to upgrading to a 2002+ Explorer sometime in the future to get the wider wheel base and smoother ride.

We've had our 2000 Explorer for nearly two years, and we really love it. It's very comfortable on the highway, and very capable off-road; we use ours regularly to get to a Wyoming cabin at the end of a seriously rough, four mile 4-low climb. Even with four people and a big load, it's great. Drive it slowly and correctly in 4-low and it does awesome. Although power was somewhat disappointing orginally, a 2.5" Dynomax cat-back exhaust and K&N cold air intake cured that. Overall, we love ours and plan to keep it a long time!

The Explorer has excellent features and options and is very comfortable to ride, but there are major design problems with the 2000. Way too much lean around corners, a stutter skip when hitting bumps at what would be reasonable speeds in other vehicles, broken motor in the rear wiper, grinding noise in the front end that the dealer "does not hear" and an annoying rattle in the dash are among my experiences.

I got my 2000 Ford Explorer Sport earlier this month when I traded my 1998 Ford Mustang in for it. I needed much more room for my things, with being an art major in school, and a musician. I liked how the Explorer Sport looked rugged and tough-not weak and flimsy like other SUV's. This one works great for people with busy lifestyles, with things to do and stuff to carry. It's fun to pile all of your friends into the Explorer and head out to the beach, or mountains, with the windows down and radio up. It's very fun to drive- I get a lot of compliments on this vehicle.

I bought this vehicle new and it has only broken down once $70). I had a problem with an oil leak/transmission fluid one the 1st day. After dealing with the Regional Rep. it was repaired, the price of the Quality Care Program was refunded, the Quality Care services were honored, and the warranty of the repair was extended. Not a good way to start, but things have been fine since. At 68,000 miles the brakes have not been replaced, but will needed soon. I have been looking at new vehicles with great incentive rates-but I just can't let go of this vehicle. Nothing else has the same comfort/bells and whistles as this vehicle.

Leased a 2000 XLS after our 6 week old mustang caught on fire. The truck was nice looking at the time & we wanted a truck so we went for it. Update- we just returned the truck 4 months early after numerous problems: 1. transmission shot after 15,000 miles 2. check engine light on after two service jobs 3. gages didnt work until truck was on for 15-20 mins 4. averaged 10-12 miles to the gallon with the small V6 (god only knows how the V-8 is) Funny thing is ford admitted that the quality of Explorer wasn't good until 2002 Model. Enough said- Got a Chrysler Minivan

First Ford truck disappointment after a loyal run. While the look is great, the thing is falling apart around me. I am a low/easy mileage driver and have had dealer returns for brakes, tires, front suspension and seat belts. Disloyalty on the manufacturers' part too...hassles on warranty work and the ESP is major paperwork runaround. Low resale value as used truck reflects the lousy truck that it is. Final Ford for me.

I purchased it 2 years old with about 56k on it - which is a lot for two years, but not much overall. Needless to say, due to mileage the warranty had expired, but I remember Fords as being fairly reliable - not the case with this 2000 Model. I have had the fuel system fail on my among other things. This is my second Limited Edition Ford Explorer. I kept the first one for ten years. I have never had to do more than change the oil. I traded in my 1990 Limited for the V8 in 2000. The V8 made the car more even fun to drive. I even test drove the BMW X5 and still chose my Explorer. I believe my car is, flat out, the best SUV on the market and no where near the most expensive. I have driven this car for fourteen years and it still puts a smile on my face too this day!

We purchased our Ford last year, so far we are not too impressed. Yes the car is attractive, comfortable and has great pick up. However, I find that this SUV is unsafe and handles terrible in bad weather and hauling heavy loads. We've already had to send back to the dealer to replace a $400 faulty part. Both my husband and I agree that this will be our last Ford Explorer.

I have had the car for a little over 2 years, with 22,000 miles on it. My local dealership recently had to replace the transmission, a very expensive propositon if it wasn't under warranty. Other problems: air conditioner rattles, problems with the fuel gauge, accelerator pedal, noises from loose fitting parts. Ford also said they would not cover a rental car while they fixed this problem, even though it is under warranty. Not a good idea to bring repeat business! Anything amazing to say? Yes, I got a good deal on it, but other than that, I would buy a Japanese vechile next time.

I am 6'3', 250 lbs., for me the seating is comfortable but snug. The headroom is there, that's #1. I pull an 18 ft. runabout boat with ease. We load up for our trips to Mexico and the roof rack is a must. The car drives well and my fuel milage is 17.5 in town, 21 on the road, 6 cyl SOHC. This SUV fits well in the garage and is easy to park. If I wanted more out of this vehicle, I would have bought an Expidition. I'm happy.

I bought this new and enjoyed it for 3yrs. I liked all the room I had for my junk. Great in snow in 4x4 and ABS was able to bring me to a stop quickly too. Had a few mechanical problems though. I had to have something fixed with the idle (kept stalling). Had to have the back wiper replaced and the running boards replaced due to pre- mature rust. All these were replaced while under warranty so no cost to me. Firestones were replaced too; those tires were much to big for this car and made the ride bouncy and at times and feel unstable, the Goodyears made ride somewhat better but I was still a bit concerned about rollovers.

oh, the ambivalence!

There is so much to laud about my 'Splorer. To wit: Firm, contoured and supportive seats with terrific leg support. Easy control placement especially with the controls conveniently placed on the steering wheel. Responsive auto temp control. Tons o'cargo room. Idiot-proof AWD system that chuckles at snow. The heated seats are fantastic. In the "humpf" category - A jarring, teeth- rattling ride on most surfaces. A voracious fuel appetite for its strong but unrefined V8. Shoddy rear wiper system. Overall - good value for the money but be prepared for a trucklike ride combined (assuming a V8) with the fuel economy of a 747.

We have a 2000 XLS. We have had to deal with the poor gas mileage which was expected. However, there were unexpected problems. We had several little complaints like it took a long time to warm up in the winter so the heat took a long time, wipers never worked great in the front or rear. The biggest complaint was that it needed a new transmission at 40,000 miles. There was no explanation given as to why a low mielage vehicle needed this work. Appraently it is a common thing with Explorers. We have sworn off Fords and bought a Dodge Caravan. The dealer was great to work with, which is good since we were there so often.

Overall this is a well build SUV with good pick up and comfort. However, I don't think this vehicle has very good handling. Especially in the rain, hauling a load and emergency situations. I wouldn't recommend the Ford Explorer Sport to new drivers, i.e. teenagers. I don't think this is a very safe car. This will be our first and our last ford explorer sport.

Very pleased overall. Had to give it back to the dealership last June because the lease was up. I had 2 problems with it. The first being that I had the timming chain rattle from the SOHC V6. When they took apart the engine to work on that they messed up a spark pulg wire that would make my Explorer miss and run badly. However those were my only two issues. It never squeeked ((even with living on a bumpy Michigan dirt road) Heck, even mainroads here will bring out a squeek on almost any vehicle :-) The 4WD worked flawlessly and I am going to get my wife a 2000 Limited to replace her aging 1996 Explorer (which has also been great only needing a fuel pump.

Very Satisfied with the Explorer. Very functional and an enjoyable drive. I drive 88 miles round trip to work daily, plus several road trips. All on- road. Very please with the reliability after the tire recall. Minor problems: AM Radio reception, antenna cable came loose. Radio display comes and goes. Understand that it is a common problem. $300 repair by Ford, But have found 3rd party mail in repair for $75.00. Will do that when the display fails altogether. Rear wiper will not work at times. Have not had that looked at yet. Currently have 65,000 miles and plan on keeping it.

I got this 2000 XLS after my almost loaded '99 XLT turned out that is almost needed a bright yellow paint coat (hint, hint). To save me a few bucks on an assisted buyback, I got a 2000 XLS rather than XLT. The only things I miss from the XLT are the cushier seats, overhead console, and the power of the SOHC engine (certainly not the problems that come with it). This ride has been pretty OK. Tranny needed to be replaced at 21000 miles, replaced rear wiper motor (who hasn't?). Also with a rattle in the door for 4 months now, dealer can't hear it (go figure?). Definitely buying an ESP as the first 2 years of ownership and the '99 did not inspire confidence.

I put a lot of miles on my vehicles. So far the Explorer has done well. The quality and "feel" are very solid. I feel safe when driving it because it is an old fashioned, heavy truck chassis with front and side airbags.

I am currently driving my second Ford Explorer. I previously owned a 1996 with the same options on it and drove it for a couple of years. I finally decided that the mileage was the only factor keeping me from taking it to college this coming fall. Therefore, I sold it privately for about $8200 with 102,000 miles on it. I absolutely love my new vehicle and will probably always own an Explorer whenever I have a vehicle.

We leased this Explorer and have had really good success with it mechanically. gas milage sucks, avg is 15, but its an SUV. in 2002, the tranny slipped several times during the winter and service center did not seemed concerned. Wierd sound sometimes when using the turn signal. Ample room for family of four. Cut through snow pretty good.

Within two more years and 28,000 miles driving, my Explorer had sent back to repair 4 times, not include change Firestone tires. Radio panel has no display, rear whipper motor failed, paint lifting, thermalstate leak. Bouncing and Noising when I drove high speed at freeway. My wife refused to buy any American made car.

Only minor problems with the car such as rear windshield wiper motor and tail light replacement. But it was done quickly and was covered under warranty. I have gone on several long trips and been off roading several times and the explorer does great. Only at high speeds does the explorer rattle a little bit (85-95). All-in- all, this car has been great for everyday driving, trips, camping, off roading, towing and even sleeping in :)

I was very happy with the 4.0 liter engine, although it was a little taxed when hauling a heavy trailer. It seems perfectly matched with the smooth- shifting transmission. The 4wd performed well in winter and the AUTO mode kicked in when required.

An SUV is not a mercades benz. If you want comfort, buy a car not a truck. I love my Explorer and have had several in the past 5 years. No breakdowns, no problems and great maintenance plan. As for offroad, it handles perfectly fine and has plenty of clearance. If you want to bounce around like a kangaroo, buy a Monster Truck with poofy tires. I stand 6'2" and get claustraphoic in vehicles. The Ford Explorer has more room in the cab compared to the Chevy-Blazer and Jeep- Cherokee. As for carrying room. We have 2 large dogs and the truck area is plenty of space for travelling gear as well as dogs.

The 2000 Explorer is a comfortable, yet flawed vehicle. The ride is very good but there is just a bit too much wind and road noise. Build quality is only fair, as mine had two significant manufacturing defects. The B-Pillar was misaligned and the body welds were not correct. This necessitated 5 trips to the dealer to repair, with the 5th trip requiring the dealer to have the truck for 17 straight days. I was provided with a loaner free of charge. Aside from a horrendous rattle in the dash I have experienced no ther problems although it is gradually loosening up (creaks in the dash and door and other trim pieces). Performance is adequate, although there are times I wish for slightly more power. The truck will cruise easily on the interstate at 75-80. The seats are very comfortable. My truck, with the 4.0L OHV V6 averages 17-18 mpg in mixed driving. I have been doing my own oil changes with synthetic blend oil and have noticed improved and quieter engine performance. I would not hesitate to look at the 2002+ Explorer if I were considering a new SUV. However, I think I will go back to a mid or full-size sedan next time around. Disappointed with the high d

Like the car a lot. Had 2 problems so far. The rear window wiper had a bad motor and needed to be replaced and the Idler air control (IAC) valve was sticking and needed to be replaced or the car would sometimes die at standstill. I also see that some parts are not lifetime. (Example: fuel filter) A small cost but on Toyota its a lifetime part. Among other recommended services Maintaince Costs can add up on this vehicle because the dealer has to do certain things like a complete transmission flush and fill every 30000 miles. An above average SUV for Premium Price in its class.

Regardless of what the media says about the Ford Explorer, I stand by its design. Unfortunately I was in a multiple rollover accident in my first Ford Explorer (2000 model) and received nary a scratch! Felt like I was in an amusement park ride as we tumbled over and over. That's a good vehicle that can sustain the damage that we did with no injuries. My 5-month old infant son in the back thought it was fun. There's no question in my mind that the Explorer is an outstanding vehicle.

18,000 mile & needed a new transmission, and I got a re-Mfg. one put in, thats with the dealer does when they go. Also multiple recalls, including, tires, air bags and also seat belts. Then they changed electrical harness & and in the beginning the oil sending switch. Car has made me plenty unhappy. Yeah they might be better than the Blazer I once rented but that really don't say much if you know what I mean.
