Purchased this vehicle used with 132k miles on it. Figured I was safe after reading all the great reviews on this site. Boy was I mistaken. Within one month the timing belt needed replaced and door latch needed repaired. The handle alone was over 100.00 for the part. Two weeks later the motor went. Was one repair bill after another. Found out later that the motor is a common problem with this year which is why the repairs are so costly.

Impressed me!

We've had our Tracker since Sept 99. No expensive issues not covered under warranty. On our third exhaust system from converter back. To be fair though, snapped off the first two (don't ask!) Really aggressive tires are a must if you plan to off road. Wind roar is bad, but thats after 4 deer in 5 years. Body panels don't allign quite as good as when new.Wind WILL shift lanes for you.

I have read the many posts on these however they are not as reliable as most think. LOOK VERY CLOSELY IF YOU ARE BUYING ONE FROM UP NORTH! The rust issues for these are pathetic. There is no underbody coating on these and even though the vehicle might look nice on the outside.. the underside of these are eaten up. I mean rusty leaky oil pans, brake lines, inner rocker panels. Also.. be sure to test the auto locking 4WD hubs. Most owners never service these and they will not engage in 4WD even though the light says it's on. The 4 cyl is a good engine but fuel economy is not very good. 21 MPG HWY is about as good as it gets.

A great little SUV

I have had a few of these and the 4 CYL engine is the way to go. The v-6 seems to have timing belt noise issues and does not hold up any near as long as the 4 cyl. These have no real towing ability and seem to eat front brakes. The body panels dent easily. The power steering rack and pinion also is known to leak. All in all it will go about anywhere and has ample heat and AC. I have seen the 4 cyl models with well over 180K miles on them with no issues. A safe bet for a used vehicle. It it hard to buy them at the market prices... these hold their value quite well.

My Tracker has been in my family coming up on 9 years now. Bought it new in Dec 2000. Mine is the rear wheel drive, soft top version. It has a manual transmission. I (the mom) drove it for 7 years with never a problem. Outside of routine maintenance, it has cost me no money. My son bought it from me 2 years when stationed in sunny southern CA. Again, no problems with it. Routine maintenance only. He recently drove it cross country, from CA to VA with no problem at all. Very soon, he will be purchasing a newer car and the Tracker will go to his younger sister who is in college. For basic transportation, with no bells and whistles, this is a great little car.

I've owned my Tracker since Dec of 99. I bought it while I was in the Navy for a fuel friendly and peppy car for the San Diego area. The engine is a little under powered, but with k&n filters, cherry bomb muffler, and megaphone style exhaust tip, mine seems to have picked up a little bounce in its step if you know what I mean. I owned it less than six months before I put it on a trail in San Diego. The Uniroyal tires that were stock on it did a good job holding onto the rocks, and its footing only wavered when a large rose quartz stone under the left front shattered and I slid about ten feet. But I'd say these are vastly underestimated litte 4x4s.

I purchased this vehicle new for a towed vehicle behind my motorhome. It was one of few light weight vehicles that could be towed 4 down. It has only 26000 miles as of this date, and I use it almost daily. I have had no problems with it and except for some wind noise, and low horsepower, I think it is a great vehicle and plan to keep it until the wheels fall off. Thanks

Purchased the tracker new in late 2000. Got the no frills, basic 5 speed model. At approximately 3,000 miles loud squeaks and squeals came from engine transmission area. I told dealer I thought it was trans but he supposedly changed water pump. Went back and forth changing parts finally trans 5th gear blew at 65,000 others are not far behind. Directional and electrical wires grounded out between firewall and trans. oil seals began leaking heavily at 70,000. Built by Suzuki but not as dependable as Samurai I have.

This is a fun car to drive. It has great response in 2 and 4 wheel drive. With a decent set of tires this suv will climb anything. Its small enough to go anywhere and will turn on a dime. I would like to see a little more power and the interior could use a little upgrade. Ofcourse with a price as low as it is those things are expected. This suv is a steal for the going prices.

No problems with vehicle as such. I just wish that the back door opened up or split up and down. It is sometimes difficult to get enough room in a parking lot to open the door. The automatic transmission works excellent and the cargo size is adequate practically with the back seat down.

I BOUGHT THE TRACKER OVER FOUR YEARS AGO AND I HAVEN'T EVEN HAD TO REPLACE A MUFFLER. LOT OF LEG ROOM UP FRONT AND HEAD ROOM GALORE. THE 4CYL. ISN'T QUITE ENOUGH, BUT THEY NOW COME WITH A SIX.IT'S THE EASIEST SUV TO PUT THE SEATS DOWN, PACK UP AND GO. I PLAN ON HANGING ONTO MY TRACKER FOR SEVERAL MORE YEARS.

My wife and I are both tall and appreciate the fact we both fit nicely into this vehicle. The seats are comfortable and leg room ample. We have taken this car on several long trips, both winter and summer, and found the ride pleasant and comfortable. This is an affordable, comfortable rig. I have two trackers and enjoy both of them.

Love it. Problems with left front turn signal leads to repeated "burnout bulb" flashing that comes and goes without changing the bulb. Could be switch/socket. Had problems with the plastic fan for the A/C condenser shifting back into the condenser but R.K. Chevrolet did an excellent job of repairing it. They also performed the mod to the cruise control to prevent the shifting into a lower gear when on a road and engaged.

Nice body style, but looks roomier than it is. Front seats have tons of space, and excellent headroom for tall folks, but back seats are cramped for anyone over 5'7" (great for carseats, though). Surprisingly good fuel economy for a 4X4. 4 wheel drive is easy to use, trouble-free. Outstanding in deep snow! Periodic irritating rattle from sides of dashboard - it comes and goes, not sure of the cause. Interior materials are cheap (plastic scratches easily), and the body seems to dent easily - but what do you expect for a car under 15 grand? Absolutely no mechanical problems. Excellent vehicle for the money.

Well I did put a lot of miles on it and it hasn't given me any major problems. But exterior is falling apart. The top is tearing up at the seams after 3 years and rear bumper has lost all of it screws. The interior was decent except that the window regulator went bad and the A/C fan doesn't blow. If you decide to get one, inspect it very carefully.

Solid vehicle. We have 2WD LT 2.0. Have had no problems in 2.5 years other than squeaky belts. Dealer has replaced pulley, Catalytic Converter and dressed the belts. I have my own spray on those humid days. Other than that minor issue - this is a reliable, reasonably well-built, utilitarian vehicle. Handles well but the 2.0 takes some planning on the freeway. I prefer BMWs but this little ladder-framed truck is okay to flip around. Just underpowered. Not an issue on fire roads and worse. Eats it up. Well-designed in that respect. Front seat are a little skimpy. Overall, get one. They are very undervalued on the used market.

Gas mileage is superior to the Blazer that it replaced and the fuel injected engine is far more reliable than the old carberator. The Overdrive option is excellent and helps with the gas mileage and the ride is comfortable. Only concern is the back door that opens out and to the side so that it makes a difference which side of an object I stop on for loading and unloading or how close I stop.

I BOUGHT MY TRACKER 2 YEARS, AND I WISH I WOULD HAVE MADE A MORE INFORMED DECISION. I DON'T LIKE THE WAY IT DRIVES. I CALL IT MY SUPED UP GOLF CART. IT SOUNDS REALLY NOISY WHEN TRYING TO ACCELERATE. THE RESALE VALUE IS NILL. I OWE 2500 MORE ON IT THAN WHAT IT IS WORTH. THE COMFORT LEVEL INSIDE IS NON-EXISTENT ALSO. THE SEATS ARE UNCOMFORTABLE, AND YOU CAN REALLY FEEL EVERY BUMP. I STILL HAVE 3 MORE YEARS LEFT ON THE LOAN, I'M COUNTING THE DAYS UNTIL ITS PAID. A LONG AND EXPENSIVE LESSON....RESEARCH YOUR PURCHASE BEFORE YOU BUY. NEXT TIME GETTING AN ALTIMA.

I got what I expected: an inexpessive SUV with all the options for running around town with some limited off-road. It held up well in three years without any major problems. The idler belt needed replacement every 12 months or the squeeling drove you crazy.A lot of road noise at over 40 MPH. The interior plastic finish marks and scratches easily. The exterior sheet metal dents easily. The 4WD performed excellently. Braking was fair. Wind causes it to shift in lanes. 4WD shifter vibrates constantly. Rear headrests block viewing out rear view mirror (removed for last 3-years). Can not shut off headlights when car is running.

Bought the vehicle for the four wheel drive feature to get into cottage in poor weather. For this it is great. I even pulled out a tree stump with it! However, getting to the cottage on the highway is another matter. I have never felt safe in the thing, especially in windy conditions and on wet or snowy roads. I have also had a tick in the engine since day one- normal according to the dealer- and a belt pulley that is very noisy , even after having it replaced once. I'm happy that my three year lease term is up.
